Solve : computer shut down by itself?

Answer»

weeks ago my computer started shutting down on its own. I am running windows 2000 Pro. I ATTEMPTED several times to virus scan  but it shutss down in the middle of the scan. I have looked at the event log and  don't really understand what I am seeing. Code #'s or fault #'s. 10006,10009,6005,6006,6009,7001,7026,10010,17. Can you help me figure out what is going on?Will it do the same in safe mode?

Is it shutting down due to the virus or because it is overheating? Are your fans operational?I checked the fans and removed the side panel and everything looks OK. Processor fan is running as well as cooling fan.I did start it in safe mode and it didn't shut down but sometimes it will work for hours and not shutdown. Quote

And in the time that it does stay on, what are you not doing that you would do when it shuts down immediatly?

What are your system specifications?

Have you scanned for Viruses, Trojan Horses and spyware when you have had the chance?

Virus scanners
AVG Free
-- Anti virus scanner
Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
Microsoft Antispyware
-- Anti spyware scanner. Windows XP Home and Professional only.
Spybot Search & Destroy
-- Anti spyware scanner
Adaware SE Personal

Firewalls
Use both a hardware and software firewall.
Be advised as dual software firewalls may cause problems

ZoneAlarm Free
-- Free firewall - more user friendly
Sygate Personal
-- Free firewall - more configuration options

The following files are not substitutes for the ones described above.
They are either diagnostic tools or removal tools for malware of a certain kind

You can, apparantly, look up what the error codes mean by going here.

The power supply is CompUSA 300 watt ATX. Interesting developement! I started the computer in safe mode. Attempted to defrag drive and it warned me I did not have ENOUGH memory to defrag. I DELETED a few files I could afford to loose and tried again. This time it started to defrag but somewhere before completion, it shut down again. This time yes, in the safe mode.I just received a warning that i was low on virtual memory. Quote

What are the rest of your specifications?I am not sure exactly what you want. This computer was built by the general manager here several years ago and he ordered all the parts separatey. Is it possible that a virus is infecting the virus-scanning software?
