Hi....on one of my computers I am losing hard drive space rapdily.  The C: drive is part of a PARTITION and although its formatted size is around 9 GB ....when viewing the drive in explorer and using Properties function for all hidden and viewable files it only comes in at  around 5.5 GB.  I have no idea where the other 4 GB APRROX. is gone?  I assume it's a virus and have used Hijjack This, McAfee and several adware/spyware programs to fully scan drive in safe mode but I can't find anything abnormal to attribute to the 4+BG of spave gone.

Any help would be appreciated.  THanx JasonPrograms might be creating temporary files and placing them on the C: partition.If it's SHOWING 5.5 Gbs, why do you think it's using 9 Gbs?Check your page file, or do a search for large files and see what it might be. If you see that you have a 4GB history file then you know what happened."Run Disk Cleanup and remove all but the last restore POINT. See if your System Restore cache and Recycle Bin size is set at a reasonable level (Say 1024Mb) on each drive, and reduce the IE Temporary Internet Files cache and History cache to the minimum. Install CCLeaner and clean out all of the junk files. Unhide all files and folders and remove the hotfix uninstallers ( $NTUninstaller$ ) from the hidden C:\Windows folder and remove their entries from Add-Remove programs.
(Note: Some Security updates should NOT be removed so check in add-remove programs - before - doing this TASK.)
Then remove the contents of:

The C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Installations folder
The C: WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Download folder
The C:\WINDOWS\Temp folder
The C:\Windows\pchealth\helpctr\Datacoll folder, and...
The C:\Windows\Prefetch folder

(You can add these folders to EmpTemp if you have this program installed.) Then run chkdsk and defrag."

Sorry, I can't help you.I would take out the entire Hard DISK Drive and store it somewhere safe.Make a drive image on CDRs for forensic analysis. Copy Outlook Mail folder to a CDR.Mark, you have to make sure you're dealing with 'Outlook', not 'Outlook Express'.   Once your sure which program you're dealing with, do a search for the folder.   Copy the folder (found in search) under the User name, not the one from 'Program Files' to a floppy or cd.   Then get a friend or lawyer to import them into their program to be examined.   She won't know you've done this (at least, not easily).Great information - THANK you for your suggestionsI just hope that everything GOES well for you.

Hi, I RECENTLY just bought a new 80 gig Hard drive and need some help. I installed the drivers and such for the HD and then tryed to boot up the computers from the Windows XP disk I have. Made sure that is was BOOTING from the disk. Now I get to this NTLDR thing and asks if I want to restart. NTLDR is missing is basically your computer saying I don't know where to boot. USUALLY this is associated with a hard drive that isn't partitioned or formatted. It could be that something didn't install correctly on the boot sector as well. Also your ram or motherboard, but it's unlikely.

My advice is to check the disk, TRY to boot it from another computer. If it doesn't work you need to fix your boot sector, which usually means a format, but there could be another way. . .

My son and a computer-savvy pal switched a COMPAQ PRESARIO 8000 to a Scorpio case. But in powering up, the only thing that happens is the fans running for a few SECONDS, then shutting down. A test with the old power supply yields the same thing, so it doesn't appear to be the supply itself. Any THOUGHTS?Have your son check all CABLE connections and make certain hardware is properly seated.

Since successfully installing my USB wireless adaptor, I cannot seem to fiddle with the settings to stop it prompting me to enter a PASSWORD before loading windows me. It SAYS "Enter Network Password". I can get rid of it by PRESSING enter - but how to stop it coming up, since I haven't set a password?

Also, every time I switch on my computer it says "SSDP Services for Windows Millenium is trying to access the internet" - it's a zone alarm message. It doesn't seem to matter if I say allow or deny - can I stop it? - do I NEED it?

please help me, I have a laptop with Windows XP, and it was working fine a few DAYS ago ut now it will not shut down. When I click on the shut down button, it beeps at me and does nothing. I have searched this problem high and low, and the SOLUTION I come up with is either my Norton Antivirus program or a button I need to click under my power settings. Problem is, I DONT have Norton and because my comp is a laptop, the option under power settings is not there. I tried running shutdown.exe in my scheduled tasks, nothing happened. Now this is one of those embarrassing mistakes I tend to get myself into and can't get out of, but here goes:   The other day I  clicked on the time and date icon on the right hand bottom of the page.  I wanted to look at a calendar to find out exactly what date it would be, eight weeks from now.  The date and time properties came up, I LOOKED at the calendar, found the date I wanted, and must have done SOMETHING to reset my computer to that date!  Now, all my letters and files that I save are dated October 10.  Here's my question: If I change the date from October 10, back to August WHATEVER, will I lose the files I saved in the two days since this has happened?  I mean, since I will "go back in time" will I "virtually" wipe out whatever took place in those couple of days.  LIke, if we're back to August, how can my computer "remember" what I did in October?  What can I do, Please, to fix the date and not lose any files, thanks.Hey Dr. October,

No, your files will not be wiped. The date is just an file attribute and generally is not USED except for utilities like XCOPY. There are actually programs (TOUCH is one of them) that allow you to change file dates and times at will.

I have two accounts on an XP Prof. system. One ACCOUNT has no sound notification for Outlook, hotmail, or MSN messages. This only happens for the notifications with these programs. However, sounds play fine as .wav files or audio through the sound card. Similarly the other account plays e-mail notifications properly. It appears to be with only the first mentioned account? However, I don't want to delete the account because it is an administrative account to the PC?Try doing the following:

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Sounds and audio devices
5. Sounds tab
6. SELECT a sound CONFIGURATION that suits you.Unfortunately, I have already tried that still with no sound. The only other thing I can think of is to delete the id and start over with a new id. However, I will then lose all of my DESKTOP configuration and shortcuts.

So this problem has been BUGGING me like crazy!  In my Microsoft Outlook, my hotmail account automatically DELETES mail that appears with a certain heading type.  This mail is only DELETED from my hotmail inbox, therefore, it is all my non-junkmail.  The mail that is deleted appears with a heading carrying the icon of a piece of paper with the top right CORNER folded down.  It is located in the column under "Header Status."  The button MARKING this column looks like an envelope with an arrow by its bottom right corner pointing down.  It seems like outlook automatically deletes this mail once it is in my inbox.  When I take it out of my deleted folder and put it back into the inbox, it deletes it again!  I could really use some advice.

I' had to zip files to SEND to college, I had then to rename them zap files to get through their firewalls. That was all find until about a month AGO when I had to open the zapped files and am unable to do this.  The file PROPERTIES show the file type as 'software installation settings'??? Hi, when I play a game on my computer, I kill any process that I don't need in order to get as MUCH power as I can from my computer. I was wondering if, instead of having to kill them one by one in the windows task manager, I COULD make some kind of application, like a batch file or something (not really familiar with this) to kill the ONES I WANT by just clicking an icon on my desktop. My winlogon.exe file got corrupt (I have XP Pro w/ SP2) and after TRYING to copy the file from the CD and rewrite over the corrupt one, I finally just deleted the winlogon.exe from the hard drive.  When I try to copy anything from the WINDOWS XP Pro CD, I get the "Access DENIED" error in the Repair mood of the windows installation.  Any IDEAS?Did sp2 do this?? was it ok before......

I am trying to resolve a client his PC problem. When the mouse is moved, the computer restarts.

However, if you keep the PC busy by running a virus or spyware scanner or work inside a program and keep it running it will not reset. It will reset when the mouse is left alone for APPROXIMATELY 5 minutes and is then moved. The AMOUNT of time varies.

I have done the following (And will retry them again now that I can work at my office)

Hello all, I downloaded a program "Disk Investigator" to see about undeleting PREVIOUS deleted files. Needless to say, the program was a bit beyond my computer comprehension so I therefore decided to delete the program. I then WENT to control panel...add/delete....and deleted it there. I also went to c\program files and tried to delete the file there but an error message read.....Cannot delete di.exe...Access is denied...The source file may be in use.....I went to Task Manager to see if it was running there and it wasn't. I also checked processes and found di.exe and considered, end process, but a warning message read.....can cause UNDESIRED results including loss of data and system instability. The process will not be given the chance to save its state or data before it is terminated......my question is....How can I delete this di.exe and was the warning in task manager a "DO NOT ATTEMPT" ENDEAVOR? WINDOW MEDIA PLAYER CANNOT PLAY THE FILE.

or on a football website where i have paid an anuall subscription to axcess their video data baseps,am running  mp10 or so my son tells meUpdate video/audio codecs./macromedia/flash player........or use APPLE quicktime.......Contact the administrator of the website and ask him if you require any codecs to view his material.

Also make certain that your firewall is NOT blocking Windows Media Player in any way!

I purchased a BYTECC external enclosure for my old hard drive.  I configured it as a slave drive, hooked it up and attempted to ACCESS the data on it.  However, my computer keeps asking me to format the drive, which I think will delete everything on it.  Does anyone have ideas on how I can access my old drive without losing data on it?What OS are you using - what FILE system?  Is the file system on your old hdd the same as you are currently using.

We NEED to rule out as many possible causes of your problem as we are able to rule out.  One way to accomplish this is to check to see if the hard drive will work outside the USB hard drive enclosure by installing it back in the computer as it was before.  

Remove the hard drive from the enclosure.

Turn off your computer and open the case.

Disconnect the new hard drive.

Install the hard drive you removed as master (make sure the jumpers are set correctly and connect it to the primary IDE (IDE 0) male CONNECTOR on the motherboard).

Power up the computer to see if it recognizes the drive as it did before you removed it.  If it does, we may rule out the hard drive, its boot sector, its MBR, and its file system as the cause of the problem.

We may then begin to troubleshoot the USB port, the SOFTWARE drivers and the USB case as the possible causes.

Here is my problem.  I can not do things like open WORD documents, uninstall programs, install programs...

Hello all, thru your help I recently SOLVED a capacity problem but might have inadvertently created another.....I keep getting an automatic update from MS and download it......a minute later the same update appears again.....I've gone to MS website and checked my past downloads and have sucessfully downloaded this particular update 17 times......cannot get out of this update loop......cannot find a solution on MS's FAQ....what's happening? My OS is 2000 pro.control panel ...click the automatic updates.........chose manual downloads.........and go to the run box type  msconfig in it ......click the  services tab and untick the  automatic updates boxI went to control panel and chose manual.....went to run box and typed in msconfig.... an error message appeared: cannot find the file msconfig (or one of its components) make sure the path and filename are correct and that all REQUIRED libraries are available.....I deleted a number of program files several days ago trying to SOLVE another problem of capacity; could I have deleted something inadvertently that I shouldn't; that might CONTRIBUTE to this problem and if so, is there any way I can review what I deleted and reinstall any essential program?No "msconfig" in Win2k.Unless its downloaded?>.try this instead>Start, Settings, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, then Services And  disabled windows updates.......Merlin_2 and Computer_Commando, Problem solved....Was able to get a free audience with MS.....Apparently there was a glitch in downloading IE 6 SP 1...Had to reinstall it and all subsequent updates.....Working fine.....Thanks for your help! This might seem a little odd but SINCE formatting my hard drive and re-installing everything, when I play certain videos, either off the net or ones I have, some of them play very SLOWLY with media palyer 10. If I rollback to mp8 they all play perfectly but when I download 10 they go so slow, not all of them but just the odd one. It is not the play speed settings in media player and before I FORMATTED everything was fine with version 10. This is not REALLY a drastic ploblem, just thought it wa a bit odd.

Now,  if you don't think of yourself as an expert, but think you may add something to the conversation PLEASE DO!  Even if you just ask a question, it may lead someone else to the answer.

I'm no expert, and SEVERAL forum regulars are able to think circles around me on many topics, but i USUALLY find i have some suggestion that helps in some way for some topics.  It's like i'm holding one piece of a HUGE collection of puzzles, and someone else has another piece, and someone else has another, and so on.  Absolutely *none* of us has all the pieces to every puzzle (anyone who says she does is not being honest!) so don't be afraid to add to any conversation here.

I do agree that we each need to give some input as they will make the picture more clear, solving puzzles has never been a competition only relaxation. Or frustration.  The annoying thing when trying to solve a problem is when u think u have it all figured out a new piece of the puzzle is given to you changing the picture all together and makes u have to start again

It is always great to have a problem to solve .......HOWEVER .......it is extremely frustrating to read and reread a posters issue .... to be sure that the advice offered applies to their issue ......only to find out 4 or 5 posts later .........that ...OH YES .......would it matter that my anti whatever thingy ........found a thingy .......but I couldn't  get rid of it ........

Don't ask the good folks here how to find serial numbers for  programs that require a product code.....LOL ........you know what I mean......... That isn't what this forum is all about ......

I am WORKING with Windows Media Player 7.1 (operating in Windows 98) and my Media player isn't ACKNOWLEDGING my recently installed cd burner...I am receiving the message "No CD RECORDING devices detected" each time I click the "copy to cd" selection in the file menu.  Does anyone know how to get this program to recognize the burner?You may need to install better drivers. See if you can obtain these from the CD-RW drive's manufacturer web page.WMP 7.1 does not have burning software embeded in it? wmp 9 does..Let me add new problem here:)
All music files PLAYS with double speed on my computer.
I tried WMP and winamp also but they both plays any file very fast aprx. 2or 3 times faster.

im quite good with computers, well i thought i was until recently when my pc started going sloowwwww.

for some reason my computer has gone really slow, playing games on minimum graphics details on a loowww 512 resolution isnt really an option nomore because its tooo choppy, and opening programmes.., min and maxin windows is slow too. it takes roughly 5/6 seconds to open explorer!


my cpu runs on 101Ghz and i have 256 DDR pc 2100

i have windows xp pro with sp2, would taking off service pack 2 make things faster???

the antivirus i use is antivir and that doesnt see any virus's, i also use adaware to get rid of spyware, iv tried defragging and that hasnt done nothin!

i cant really think of anything else. HEELLPP

Ok I turn on my PC, it goes to a selection screen.

Start in safe mode (normal)

Use arrows too select (it won't let me do this and the keyboard is fine)

so the timer goes down and XP starts to load...After it is done it justs shuts off and restarts, this keeps repeating, how can I fix this? Quote

Have you downloaded files or programs and installed or used these before turning off the computer?

Can you enter the BIOS? Will the keyboard work there?

The keyboard only works when I can hit DEL and it goes into some blue and red screen.

That would be the BIOS. So we have eliminated mechnical faults.

Try rapidly pressing F8 before Windows XP loads and choose last known good configuration if it lets you.

If not, you may need to perform a repair installation with your Windows XP CD-ROM.

Hi everybody,

I have a serious problem with my laptop running xp.
a week ago i started noticing a little red cirkle with a white exclamationmark in the lower right corner, and the message that my computer was infected. Anyway i looked this up and it seemed to be some bogus SPYWARE remover program called psguard. I downloaded webroots spy sweeper to try and get RID of it, but it didn't seem to work. I tried to keep my comp off of the internet as much as possible and am now using an uninfected computer to look for some answers. Anyway, i did find some possible solutions to my problem, but when i started trying to fix my infected computer, things got worse very rapidly. I cannot seem to open anymore programs, i keep getting the message "This file doesn not have a program associated with it for performing its actions. Create an association in the Folder Options control panel" I get this for nearly every program i have on the comp except for IE. which doesnt run like it should either. I can only go to say two or three pages and that's it.

I am wondering if anybody could help me get my computer healthy again, without having to complete format and reinstall windows. Any help would be greatly APPRECIATED, since i would hate loosing all of my programs and FILES i have created over the last year or two.

its a cable internet network . the restriction is tht cant download or play any media & also cant dl anything more than 10 mb.
