Solve : Outlook Express Folders?

Answer»

Hi Group,

A few days ago all my Email folders before 28/8/05 dissappeared. I have DONE searches for the dbx folders but they will only show from that date.
I downloaded "easy outlook express REPAIR" and it found them allright but I will have to pay approx $40 to register to get more than 10.
Is this the only way ?
If they can find them why can't I ?
Is it my ISP's responsability ?
I am on a LAPTOP XP.

Best wishes

Solve : LAN Keeps Dying...?

Answer»

I'm using Windows XP SP2 and have Windows firewall ON. I have a small network set-up at my home. Three computers, each receiving my cable internet through my Belkin 4-port router.

It seems, at random, my connection will be lost. I have my network settings displayed in the taskbar, and it seems like dozens of times a DAY I'll get the error, "A network cable is unplugged." Almost instantaneously, it will find the connection again. This probably doesn't sound like a problem, but, although I'm imediately connected to the network again, it takes a while to start receiving my internet feed again. (Probably about a minute?) This is extremely frustrating when using a chat client like AIM and MSN, and having all of my conversations wiped out because of a lost connection.

One thing that I could think of that's causing the problem: I'm using the P2P client "Azuereus," and I have opened the port 6881 on both my router's firewall and Window's firewall. Opening this port increases download speeds exponentially, so I consider it a necessity.

While I said it usually takes a minute to start receiving my cable internet connection, there's something that makes this a little stranger: when my computer is idle, I'll lose the connection...and it won't get it again. If I'm download something overnight, it seems it'll go for maybe 15 minutes, then the LAN will be disconnected. When I wake up and turn my computer monitor back on (it auto-shuts down with power save), I usually am greeted with the "network cable unplugged" message. It's like it hangs at that part of the little "cycle." (By 'cycle' I'm referring to the disconnect, instantly re-connect, wait a minute for the internet...etc that's just been plauging my computer).

Any ideas? Maybe conflicting firewalls? I don't know. I'm just really frustrated right now. I've ran NortonAnti Virus, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Ad-Aware -- all with most recent updates -- and eliminated anything that I thought could possibly be doing this to me.

I would find it a necessity to find more secure P2P software. However, secure P2P is a contradiction.

Can you tell us how your LAN is set up?
Are you making use of a DHCP client?
What does the Router log tell you?
Does this problem occur on every machine connected?

You should not make use of the Windows XP firewall. Install another type of software firewall instead.

I have the same problem, but it is less persistent. You may be able to resolve this side effect by choosing the repair option whilst right clicking on your Network Interface Card.check all the nic cards are seated.and the cable distant is!SCAN for trojans etc. what does net log tell you. Quote
Can you tell us how your LAN is set up?

Sure. Cable modem to a 4-port Belkin router. Three computers are connected to the router...all of them are wired. Two are running XP, the other is running Windows 98.

Quote
Are you making use of a DHCP client?

I was...and then I thought that when the router disconnected, it MIGHT've taken that minute or so to re-assign IP addresses. I set it myself. EITHER way, though, this problem still persists.

Does this problem occur on every machine connected?

Yeah, it does. After posting this topic, I did discover that this is a problem that happens to every computer. Quote

I am not sure if your Router creates logs. You should consult the manual.

Quote
Yeah, it does. After posting this topic, I did discover that this is a problem that happens to every computer.

Are your cable modem and Router connected to a power strip or directly to the power grid? They're both on the same power -strip.-

It looked like when I lost my connection, the WAN LIGHT on the router (and the light of every computer is was connected to, for that matter) was blinking out of control. The ethernet, send and receive lights all seemed to be doing the same on the modem..Try connecting them to a different powerstrip or outlet if possible.

Have you reset both devices? If the Cable modem is also acting as a DHCP server, disable this feature. Refer to your modem manual in order to find out how.

Solve : Internet Access on Shortcuts?

Answer»

Hi everybody

This is my first post. I hope somebody has some ideas about this one.

The CONTEXT which may relate to the problem or might be irrelevant is that I have had a flurry of RECENT problems with spyware/adware (Aurora, etc.) that I have just managed to get rid of.
However I now have a problem in that I can't use my desktop shortcuts to access the internet(it just goes to white when I click)Also trying to access a website through Run doesn't work either.
I can use the address bar in Outlook to get on the net and I am still getting E-mail . I am running XP-pro, I have a firewall and run two a/v programs (AVG and very recently Panda) . Everything seems to be running much slower when it comes to the internet.
I would be very grateful for any SOLUTIONS or even being pointed in the right direction.
Thanks1. Start

6. Restore Defaults button.

You may need to do the following as well

1. Start
2. Settings
3. Control Panel
4. Internet Options
5. General tab
6. Remove cookies, temporary files and history

Kudos to Raptor.Just a quick thanks for solving my problem. It's now perfect and a weekend of headaches is now history.

Again thanks to you and this great group
Despite everything going brilliantly after I restored the defaults and cleared the temp files etc after I closed down the computer last night when I reopened this morning I had a recurrence of the problems. None of the desktop icons work, I get a blank white screen when I try to use RUN to access a the internet. Meanwhile I can still use E-mail and can access the internet throught the address bar in Outlook. I checked the defaults and they remain in place.

To further complicate things I got a message from Windows when I was trying all these things that I had low virtual memory and that Windows was doing something or other to address this.
So as it STANDS I am having great difficulty accessing the internet, the computer is very un-responsive and slow, and all this after a BRILLIANT return from the dead with the tweaks that were suggested.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

ThanksHMMM?

Solve : Startup problem...?

Answer»

Hi everybody.
I have reinstalled WinXP after formattiin C with NTFS. Everything is OK , except at startup I encounter with 2 choices as if I have 2 operation systems and wanted to choose one.
FIRST one is 1. Windows XP Professional
and             2. WIndows XP Professional Setup
I always have to choose  1st one to continue.
I want to remove second OPTION to continue startup automotically.
What should I do?
Thanks.
ps:second option checks disk as normal setup process and requires XP CD to continue.Control panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery Settings, Edit ... the boot.ini file so it looks like...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetectYou may have another installation of Windows XP on another partition.Thank you  MAc,
mine looks like;

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Setup"
and what should I do to remove second part. Is just deleting from this file will recover?

Quote

You may have another installation of Windows XP on another partition.

thank you Raptor,
yes I have $WIN_NT$.~BT file on C and this is the cause of problem. How should I remove this installation?Did you reformat before reinstalling Windows XP? If not, I suggest that you do so now.I would try this first of all. But keep a copy of the ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini files on a floppy first of all.

[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

It looks like you have NT and XP both on partition (1) which is DRIVE C: (?)

I have XP US English on partition (1) (drive C: ) and XP Pro French on partition (2) which is drive (partition) D:

I would have partitioned and installed XP on partition (2) ( drive D: )

So my boot.ini looks like this...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professionnel" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

... with the recovery console.

I have never used NT so I hope this is of help to you. Quote
Did you reformat before reinstalling Windows XP? If not, I suggest that you do so now.

I think reformatting will help to recover, but I want to remove second OS without touching Win XP which I use.

Mac, changing boot.ini didn't help.
Because
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT   still shows that there's second OS and it's chosen as default OS.

Please can you tell me how to remove one of the OSS when there are two on the same partition without harming another?

Thanks all.
I thought you had wanted to keep NT until I read the thread again.

Personally I would re-partition, re-format and re-install so that you get a clean install of XP and so that you can make a clean drive image, but you could always try this...

Edit the boot.ini to read...

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

In the drop down list next to the boot.ini Edit button make sure that it is XP which is set as the default OS.Thank you Mac,
that works.

thanks all.

Solve : Desktop background taskbar!??

Answer»

I am currently using windows XP and recently where my desktop would usually just have my folders etc a kind of taskbar is now there on the left of the screen. The taskbar shows folder tasks, other places and details. This does not seem to be able to be moved. This taskbar is very similar to the one seen when you open my documents (for example), to the left of the screen. I have had this problem for sometime and although it does not affect computer performance it is rather ANNOYING. Was wondering if anyone could help with this problem?
Cheers in adavance,

Solve : Files not visible - found.000?

Answer»

Funny thing HAPPEND to my USB drive.  All the files on it dissapeared.  When I do an analyze in defrag or a backup, a folder named found.000 is found with a bunch of chk files in it.  I have tried various ways but cannot see this folder anywhere else using DOS or Explore.  The drive propoerties show that 60% of the drive is used.

How do I access this folder and TRY to restore the files?Did you perform scandisk on your EXTERNAL HDD?Yup,

I think there is some sort of virus in it.My theory is that Scandisk has reported your files as damaged, REPAIRED them and then created a file where it stores the damaged data.

Not quite certain how you would undo this PROCESS. If possible at all.

Solve : How to format XP Home?

Answer»

Hello,

I have Windows XP Home Edition, and I'd like to format my hard drive. The problem I have is whenever I try to, it says something about windows still being open, yet I don't know how to go into DOS(other than going to run and typing in cmd, which still leaves windows open at the same time).

If anyone COULD help me, it WOULD be much appreciated.

-AdamThe best way to format your drive is to change your BIOS to boot from CD then place your Windows XP Home disk into the drive and restart when prompted press any key to boot from CD you are then on the way follow the prompts.Adam:

Ojas is right on.

Also, keep in MIND (and you may already know this) that reformatting your hard drive will delete any files you have saved to the hard drive (such as those saved in your My Documents folder).  So, burn any important files to a CD or DVD before you reformat and reinstall Windows XP.

Solve : Reinstalling WindowsXP?

I've lost all the data on my hard drive so I've been reinstalling windows USING the 6 bootable disks plus the CDROM WindowsXP, everthing goes well until setup starts the WindowsXP configuration, when it's time for the computer to restart and the install PROCESS it's supposed to continue the computer brings me back to the begining and setup starts inspecting the computer configuration once again. I don't know why windows it's unable to do the booting and to continue the install process.
Any sugestions that might help me with this MATTER???
Stolen from Flame.
http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MICROSOF/7509594/Installs/750959408.shtml
Do not read past step 32 because Flame says so.

Restarting setup seems to be what it does...
It's been years since I last installed an xp.The first thing would be to know how you lost all of your data. Are you certain that the drive is OK? Mine failed suddenly and I had to get a new one.

Have you run the drive manufacturer's drive diagnostic diskette on the drive?

Is the drive now partitioned and formatted and did you use the Windows XP CD exclusively for these two jobs?

When you see "Press any key to boot from CD..." you only do this ONCE!

If you see the same message a second time don't touch anything otherwise you'll go straight back to the start of the installation process. When Windows XP tells you it has to restart, and once again mentions you to press any key to enter setup, do not press any key but MERELY IGNORE the message.Well, it didn't even asked me to press any key to boot from CD, I think I've missed a step in the process, I don't have the diagnostic diskette and yes the hard drive it's partitioned and formated, I had to use Win98 and WinXP, at one point the computer says that no version of windows it's found so I have to use any other version and after that it asked again for the WinXP, the reason I decided to wipe the hard drive clean and reinstall was due to a virus (according to someone that knows way much about computers than me) I've done it before when I had a Win 98 based computer but XP it's different. I'm starting to think that maybe it's the WindowsXP CD ROM the one with errors.
Thansk for your posts. Is the Windows CD an upgrade version or the full version? Does it have SP2 already?

Did you make the partitions and do the formatting with the XP CD?

I also can't reset by depressing my power button. I had no choice but to unplug it.
Once replugged, I fired up the system. It goes to the windows xp boot screen then resets the boot. I have tried to boot up up in safe mode,  network safe mode, command prompt, last known config, and normal. It doesn't change anything. It KEEPS rebooting.

Solve : Driver does not recongize PC Card?

Answer»

Please help,
my driver does not make the sound from the driver that my PC card is in. My cingular manager does not recognize the device. Everthing ELSE is recognized except Sony ERICSON GC83 Quote

Sony Ericson GC83

Is this a mobile phone? What exactly are you trying to do?My PC Card for my laptop, which puts me on line without dsl or phone line.  Cingular told me this program that accesses you on the net via PC card will not except it when it is inserted into the laptop.  Cingular said that I must resolve the driver issue, which makes that ding sound when the card is placed in the side SLOT.  Right now it doesn't make that sound and they said without that sound, windows will not except that PC card(Sony Ericson GC83).  I need to know how to make the driver except that card.  It used to make that sound, but somehow it doesn't do it anymore.  Thanks for your quick response.load the software for the card ,then reboot laptop then plug the card in.I did that Merlin, but it is not on the Driver anywhere! But the program(Connection Manager) is downloaded to my computer. I don't understand, why my driver will not recognize my card.
(Using a Toshiba Satellite Model A75) Less than a year old.  Toshiba said it wasn't the computer but the software, cingular said it was the computer then the card, card was sent to be repaired, but did not fix the problem where window driver will not except the card as being inserted. You need to OBTAIN the correct drivers from the manufacturer. Once this is done, the device manager should let you know that all is correct.

After that, you need to configure the TCP/IP SETTINGS according to what your network requires. Thanks Raptor,
I will try that.

Solve : HELP!!!comp won't boot after i download SP2?

Answer»

Everything was working fine. no viruses. nothing. loaded all the automatic updates over the last couple of days. was still running smoothly. 17 possibly more updates. everything was fine.
UNTIL i loaded the actual SP2 download.
The download and install appeared to complete correctly. I was prompted with a "reboot for the install to become effective" type message, and a message from my online firewall software that microsoft was trying to contact theInternet.
I rebooted, figuring that i would get that prompt again, if it was something that the install need to do, Post-Install.

The Comp keeps trying to boot up. Gateway screen appears, then the load up screen for XP. But then, each TIME, it simply switches off and on again. I can hear the hard drive trying to boot up. But it can't:
Is this common?
Is there an EASY fix?
(NOTE: Some time ago, i was working to fix my machine with a Gateway engineer and he told me to try
chkdsk, fixmbr and fixboot
in some order or other?
Would it likely do any harm to try any or all of these, if i boot up from my gateway install disks???
Does SP2 tend to mess with the Master Boot record or Master Boot?
I'm a little worried because in previous installation/recovery attempts, i've gotten messages about the mbr becoming unstable or something. You are using an illegal version of Windows XP.Try - chkdsk /r - then - fixboot - from the recovery CONSOLE and see if that does it.

Have you got an XP CD with SP2?

Are you using Home or Pro?

hold down the f8 key on boot chose safe mode option and then go to the control panel/click add/remove icon and uninstall sp2..........it may have been a bad download........contact msoft for the sp2 disk.I would re-install. Some of the updates you have had will  probably have updated SP2 files.

So SP2 should have been applied first.

Slipstream your XP CD with SP2 so that you have a CD which you can use for SFC /SCANNOW

Rumour has it that SP3 is coming out soon.

Has it done so from start? If yes, you should reformat the entire HDD and reinstall Windows to see if the problem persists. If it does, chances are high that it is hardware related. Unless you do not take proper security MEASURES such as a firewall, virus scanner and spyware scanner before connecting to the Internet.

Solve : Odd Prgram Freezing?

Answer»

I'm on an almost new installation of WINDOWS XP Professional that, for the first week or two, has worked fine.  Now, however, certain programs are randomly not opening or going non-responsive.  If I CLICK on any link or try to accept a download in MSN messenger, it goes non-responsive.  If I try to save a picture from the web to the computer in Firefox, it goes non-responsive.  Often times opening the control panel or the add/remove programs box will cause a freeze as well.  I have all updates installed except for SP2, because anytime I try to install SP2 it goes fine until the last part (where it says finalizing install/running finalizing processes) where it stops and goes no further and I am forced to do a manual restart and re-install all my drivers for the computer.  The most infuriating part is that the Task Manager will no longer open either, pressing Ctrl-Alt-Delete results in the small box showing up in the systray implying that taskmanager opened, but it will not show up - usually forcing me to do a restart where it will tell me during the shut down sequence that taskmanager is non-responsive.  I even did a repair of Windows to see if that would fix the problem but to no avail.  Can anyone help with this? Any ideas as to what might have made it start doing this?

Solve : Can't back up files!?

Answer»

Man I am getting so f***ing frustrated with this crap!I just started school and I am trying to save my  assignments and so forth and my computer won't let me!
1.When I try putting a floppy in,it won't go.It's LIKE it's jammed or something.I know there's nothing in there because I took a floppy out then immediately tried to PUT another one in.
2.So...I try to transfer them to CD,but when I click on "copy files" then select the drive from the list,I get this error message: D:/ is not accessible-invalid function.

Please help!I didn't back up anything from my last computer, and I lost a lot of important things.1) Buy a new floppy drive.
2) Is your D drive a burner?
3) Email your assignment to a friend as an attachment & get them to save it to disk for you.1.Don't have the money for anything right now.Just paid for school.
2.Yes-I have no problems with burning music.
3.Most of my friends live (or lived) in New Orleans. The ONES that don't either live in other states or are computer illiterate or don't have one at all.Any which way,I really need to be able to do this here.It happens many times that floppy formatted with one os doesn't open on another machine with different OS.

You can try the viceversa.

Format the flopy in your machine and then go to him. Quote

2.Yes-I have no problems with burning music.

Copy the DATA onto an empty CD or use a copying program other than of Windows XP.Upload them to your ISP, they would probably be safer there than on your own computer.Have you moved this computer lately?

Have you looked for loose wiring inside the casing?

Does the floppy drive light come on when starting the computer?

New floppy drive about $9

Don't copy to the drive, try dragging and dropping. Then right-click on the drive and choose to burn files to CD.

DeepBurner does a free CD burner program in case you are stuck.

Are the file attributes and permissions set correctly?I had some bad floppies a while ago. The friction padding came loose on the inside and jammed the disc. Had to get them exchanged for another make.

Solve : slow pc after format! no more viruses tho?

Answer»

Hi all.

I have just reloaded windows xp after FORMATTING my C drive (with the windows CD) using the NTFS system. I had some problem viruses I could not remove, a worm that, once connected to the net it would send a lot of outgoing traffic, so I thought it was TIME for a format.

After the format and reloading Windows XP I have loaded up with the latest Norton AV and up to date definitions (from disc) plus a few credible spyware programs. All the problem nasties have now been eliminated from my PC HOWEVER... after my first visit to the WWW my PC is very sluggish and slow, fails to respond on things I click etc. I can try to open a window or file and it will take up to three or four minutes to open! My CTRL-ALT-DEL function does not work immediately, and I can't open the ISP details in the bottom RHS of screen when on the net.

I am at a total loss! I have formatted twice with exactly the same result. Norton, Spybot and Adaware don't find any nasties, so I'm guessing it's a program conflict of some sort? SHould I try to remove the programs one by one and see if the problem DISAPPEARS? Another format MAYBE? (NO!!!!!!)

Please, if you can help me I would appreciate it very much! I would class myself as intermediate in my PC knowledge, I also have access to the web at work should I need to access any progs or files.

Thanks, I very much look forward to a reply!!

Quote

...After the format and reloading Windows XP...

With SP2 and all the subsequent security updates?
when you reloaded winxp........was it connected to the net at time,if so you may have wasted your time. No, I can't use SP2 for some reason my disc is corrupt! It IS a borrowed copy!   Would a new copy of SP2 loaded on fix it? And no Merlin, I wasn't connected to the web when I reloaded XP. But thats a good point for other users!

I use dial-up to connect to the net, and I am not connected continually. When I reloaded windows I was not connected. I was careful to reload my antivirus prog, with new definitions, and anti spyware progs, then do scans, before getting on the net. The scans all came up clean.

I'm running XP 2002 version 5.1 and I have an intel celeron chip 1100mhz. I have no service packs, as the SP2 I 'sourced' could not be installed, something to do with the reg key! (oops) I usually cope allright with my 1100 and 192mb of ram. The problem is not immediate, but happens within an hour or less of internet connection. My Hijackthis log is below. Thanks again for your reply, and I look forward to hearing what you think could be the problem!

Solve : W2K Startup/Rstart Problem(s)?

Answer»

This is a rather complex problem so please bear with me with respect the length of this Message.

Background:

Running MS W2K/SP4 with all updates installed on a Dell Latitude, Cpt V466GT Laptop (Celeron 466 mgz Processor) circa 2000, with 512MB of Memory. and no (specific) problems prior to the onset of this problem:

Problem: After installing Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console, on Startup or Restart, the BootLoader WOULD freeze on the OS selection screen (Selection between Microsoft Windows 2000 Pro and Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console). Hitting the "Enter" Key at just the right time allowed me to get past the problem.

Regardless of the approach TAKEN (Windows 2000 CD, "Backup" Emergancy Repair Disk, etc.), the System would still "Hang", or hang with "Setup is checking your hardware configuration...".

I downloaded ntDetect.chk replacing ntdetect.com with same, re-booted the System and discovered (via Ntdetect) it was hanging on "Identifying Mouse Configuration", Re-installed two Mouse drivers, for a HID Compliant Mouse and a Logitech Optical (USB) Mouse.

Then as a matter of curiosity clicked on the reinstated ntdetect.com file and received the following Error Messages in rapid succession (by hitting the "Ignore" key:

"The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0548 IP:4d86 OP:f0 00 f0 00 01 CHOOSE 'Close' to terminate the application."

"The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0548 IP:4e18 OP:ff ff ff 43 02 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

"The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0548 IP:4e19 OP:ff ff 43 02 00 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

"The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0548 IP:4e4d OP:ff ff ff 24 00 Choose 'Close' to terminate the application."

If I repeated and restarted ntdetct a different set of error messages are displayed with different Addresses.

At this point the Re-installed Mouse Drivers are awaiting Restart, the ORIGINAL ntdetect.com file is in the C:/ ("SystemRoot") Directory, and the current boot.ini configuration for restart is:

[boot loader]
timeout=60
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect /SOS /Bootlog
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console" /cmdcons

(Edited with Notepad to include /SOS and /Bootlog switches)

At this point I am logged in, and reluctant to attempt a Restart, as I think the System will Hang when the Bootstrap Loader runs ntdetect.

Your advice and counsel on these problems would be MOST appreciated, in particular, the NTDetect.COM Error messages, and their importance, if any, what steps I can take to correct the problem prior to restart, and the best approach to take in restarting, and what steps to take if the Restart problem re-occurs.

Given the current length of time for a Technical Support response (20 days, not surprising) I have taken this to what I believe is the most appropriate Fourm, as well, for responses.

If you can provide ANY help, or direction, please do so.

Sincerely,

SEHRemove Win2k Recovery Console. No problem, but why do you think this is the problem?  And, could you be more explicit.  Remove the Recovery Console from where?  The Boot.ini File?  The Directory files?  Both?  It is not indicated as an MS App in A/R Software.
delete this>C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows 2000 Recovery Console" /cmdcons

i would have tried this myself>system file checker" From a cmd prompt, run "sfc /scannow"

but thats me.Merlin(_2):

Re: the deletion (from Boot.ini), no problem.  But, for myself and others who might read this Thread, what is your rational for this deletion?

Is the Problem in BootSect.Dat?

SEHMerlin(_2)

A PostScript to my last Reply.  Re: sfc.  I've done that. however, runing sfc /scannow restores all the original files in c:/WINNT/System32/dllcache, but wipes out a significant number of MS Updates and "Hotfixes" in the process, forcing a reinstall

SEHmost PEOPLE dont fiddle with the boot cfg.............this was in answer to your question...as i have posted ...or reboot pc hold down the f8 key and chose the last good config from the list on screen...........most folks are just happy their pc works..........and i would add that, if people just left them as they first bought them.....disable winupdates/disable system restore/disable remote access..........and a trouble free pc to boot........Merlin(_2)

Agree re: "fiddling with Boot.cfg".  However, the "Microsoft Windows 2000 Remote Console" entry was created by MS during the Remote Console install process.

Agree too, with "disable winupdates/disable system restore/disable remote access"   The problem(s) caused by Winupdates, alone, could fill a book.

Will let you know the results "IF" and/or when I am able to log back on.

As far as I am aware, your registry is not being used whilst booting..

Your Boot.ini, is though. The message is the last thing to appear on the desktop, is this still classed as boot up?
BobNot quite, I believe. When Windows is loading the PC has 'booted'..

Is there a program during start-up which is trying to access the FDD?

Solve : Wiping out drive/reinstalling Win ME?

I've read the section about it, but still have ?s.  I have the OS "REINSTALLATION" (is that the same as a recovery disk?), DRIVERS & utilities and the back-up for factory installed programs cds. Other than getting a start-up disk for my ISP, is there anything else I'll need? Can I use my old NORTON cd, or would it take too long to GET every new definition from that time on? Better to go to the Symantec site & download new NAV (if possible)? Any HELP or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Here's what I will do for you... This is a link from Gateway computers, but it will work on your system just as well, as these are standard commands... http://support.gateway.com/s/SOFTWARE/MICROSOF/7509594/Installs/750959408.shtml ... Now, Once you do all this, I want you to STOP following these directions at step 32. Do not read any further than step 32. Steps after that are extra, and you can NOT use them... Good luck!

the program is ment to find hidden--scrambled--email addresses in spam email.sorry but you paste  header information into program and it sorts hidden addressesThat sounds RATHER dodgy.

Have you tried pointing the program to its own executeable? Perhaps it is a faulty installation and it needs reinstalling.why waste cash let isp servers handle it.........if isp wish to bung up their servers will worthless junk so be it.just use another email addy.

Solve : Computer locks up randomly?

Answer»

Just recently my computer has started locking up for no apparent reason. Everything just freezes and i have to manually reboot. It happens whether i'm playing a processor intensive game or if the computer is at idle (sometimes i leave it running while i'm at work, come home and its frozen). not really sure what could even be causing this problem and its hard to tell cause nothing seems to directly cause it. It started just recently and so i though it might be RELATED to the UPS i just got recently, i uninstalled the software it came with, but still same problem. Any ideas? I have a 2.2 GHz process with a gig of ram. Tell me if you need any other info. Thanks. You have scanned for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware?

Windows saved user COMPENGINEER0\David registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

Any other ideas?sorry, there was one other warning in event viewer from source ati2mtag that said:

not sure what this means but my graphics card is an ati all-in-one-wonder 9600CompEngineer:

Perhaps your video card driver is CORRUPT?  Try checking the video card or CONTROLLER in the Device Manager for any information about the device not working properly.  Also, try downloading and installing the latest driver for your video card that is compatible with your operating system.

CompEngineer:

One way to test to see if it is the video driver is to boot the computer into Safe Mode (which does not use the video driver, but uses VGA mode, instead).  Press F8 during boot, and choose Safe Mode from the menu.

If your PC still locks up, then it is not the video card driver.  To rule out the video card, remove it (that is, if you have an onboard video controller).

Regards,
Docwell i did the msconfig and updated my drivers like you said, so now i'm just going to wait a little while and see if it happens again.Do not use default Windows drivers.I do, and I can't get any updates... Quote

I do, and I can't get any updates...

What?well, i let my computer run all day today in safe mode and it was not frozen when i got home.... i thought it might have been a temperature problem, like a bad fan or something, but safe mode should not have effected that...roll back the  video driver.or  use DR watson...who will log everything ..the problem seems to have gone away, i'm not really sure what could have been causing it... i left the case open (in case it was heat, though i dont' think it was) and uninstalled my new printer. now my computer has been running with no problems since yesterday afternoon. i'm not sure, but at least it's stopped freezing....

Solve : windows activation help?

Answer»

Ok- basically I had an old computer that had windows ME on it, and it wasnt working at all.  so i took my copy of windows XP that i had from my new computer and put it on the one that used to have ME.  Now the old one works, but it keeps telling me that I must activate XP.  what should I do?Hi, Sam.

Unlike Windows Me, Windows XP requires activation.  After 30 days you will only be able to use the operating system in Safe Mode until you activate it.  It's Bill Gates way of fighting pirates.

If your system is connected to the Internet, all you have to do is click the button to register over the Internet.  If it is not, call the phone number to register that way.  Have your Windows XP Product Code number ready when you call.

You should activate it.

Unless you have blocked the serial number by installing it on too many computers. If i activate it, will i be able to use it on my other comp STILL? Quote

You can install it, but not activate it.

I believe you can use the same serial number on two (2) computers. If you try to activate afterwards, Microsoft will block your serial number and you will have to explain them why.

However, I would play it safe and only install it on one computer as I do.

If you wish to learn more regarding this activation progress, read the quoted text in my upcoming message. This is only an excerpt of a rather large article. I lost the link, but saved the text:

What’s the idea of WPA?

The Microsoft License for use of Windows has always been limited to allowing installation on only a single machine (and that excludes having the same copy installed on a laptop as well as a desktop machine: only MS Office is licensed for the combination). Microsoft believes that this has been subject to much casual abuse. WPA is a MEANS of ensuring that a single copy is not installed on more than a single machine.

So, within the first 30 days after installing Windows XP, you must get the system ‘activated’ if you are to be able to go on using it. This involves the computer dialing in and giving some information about the hardware on which Windows is installed, receiving in return a release code which will be recorded on the system. More is said below about OEM copies provided preinstalled on a new computer

At subsequent boots, Windows checks to see that it is still running on hardware that it can recognise as being the same. If it does not match well enough, you will be unable to do more than backup files until you call Microsoft to explain — for example, that the old machine broke down and had to be rebuilt — and get a new release code.

What hardware gets checked?

The WPA system checks ten categories of hardware:

   1. Display Adapter
   2. SCSI Adapter
   3. IDE Adapter (effectively the motherboard)
   4. Network Adapter (NIC) and its MAC Address
   5. RAM Amount Range (i.e., 0-64mb, 64-128mb, etc.)
   6. Processor Type
   7. Processor Serial Number
   8. Hard Drive Device
   9. Hard Drive Volume Serial Number (VSN)
  10. CD-ROM / CD-RW / DVD-ROM

It then calculates and records a number based on the first device of each type that was found during setup, and stores this number on your hard drive. Initially, this is sent to Microsoft in an automatic dial-up, together with the Product ID number derived from the 25-character unique Product Key used in setting up Windows.

If Service Pack 1 has been installed, the entire Product Key is also transmitted: This can then be checked against a list of known pirated keys

The hardware is checked each time Windows boots, to ensure that it is still on the same machine. Also, if you subsequently perform a complete format and reinstall of Windows, Microsoft’s activation center will have to be contacted again because the information held on the machine itself (the number previously written to your hard drive) will have been wiped out by reformatting the hard drive. If your hardware is substantially the same, this will be done by an automated call without your needing to talk to anyone.

What does ‘substantially the same’ mean? WPA asks for ‘votes’ from each of these ten categories: ‘Is the same device still around, or has there NEVER been one?’ Seven Yes votes means all is well — and a NIC, present originally and not CHANGED, counts for three yes votes! Minor cards, like sound cards, don’t come into the mix at all. If you keep the motherboard, with the same amount of RAM and processor, and an always present cheap NIC (available for $10 or less), you can change everything else as much as you like.

If you change the device in any category, you have lost that Yes vote — but will not lose it any more thereafter if you make changes in that category again. So, for example, you can install a new video display card every month for as long as you like.

Note that it appears that if you boot with a device disabled (disabled — not removed), the device is not found in the enumeration — so if, say, you disable a network connection which uses the NIC and then reboot, you may be missing its three votes and find that a new activation is needed. If you are doing such things, take the HINT 3 in What about formatting a hard disk? below, and restore the files concerned once the NIC is back in service.

What if I make too many changes?

If, on Windows startup, there are not the required seven Yes votes, the system will, in the original version of Windows XP, only boot to Safe Mode. You will be required to reactivate by a phone call to Microsoft. You will have to write down a 50-digit number, call into the activation center on a toll-free number that will be given to you, read and check back the number you recorded — and explain the circumstances. In exchange, you will be given a 42-digit number to type in. This will reactivate your copy of Windows.

This is made easier if Windows XP Service Pack 1 has been installed: The system will continue to boot normally for three days, during which time you will be able to contact the activation center via the net. If the extra changes have been removed, or if 120 days have passed since the original activation, you will be able to use the automatic process once more

Solve : Beaming files via Bluetooth?

Answer»

Hey everybody,

On two WINDOWS CE devices, I'm TRYING to BEAM a file through Bluetooth from one handheld device to another.

I have both devices set to be discovered and connectable and have them both set to receive incoming beams. Does anybody have any idea how to do this?

[glb]Gizmo73[/glb]Have you tried CREATING a new connection?

So far, I have only seen two PDA's, but on both you had to specify the port, transfer rate and other relevant information before you could use the connections the device featured. No problem I got it figured out. I needed a third device that beams files through.

Thanks anyway

You will have to phsyically remove the Network Interface Card if it is an expansion card. If it is onboard, you will have to disable it in the BIOS.

Solve : deleting an inaccessible folder?

i was moving my files from several of my folders from one place to another a couple DAYS ago, and was deleting my old folders when i found one that was file protected.  i had no i dea why, and i've tried everything to delete it.  when i try, it says it's not accessible and when i double click it it says "access is denied".  i used to use the folder for .jpgs.  anyone got a solution?Google ---> KillBox.exeKillbox
-- Removes files that seem to be constantly in use.Close all open apps. Open a command prompt and navigate to the directory with the offending files. Then open the Task Manager and click on the Processes tab. select "Explorer.Exe" under Image Name. Click "End Process".

Now you will only have the command prompt and the task manager. In the Command Prompt, DEL the offending files (DEL *.mpg, DEL mus*.avi, DEL test.wmv, ETC.)

The files should now delete without a problem. Now go back to the task manager and click on the Applications tab. Click the "New Task..." button. in the DIALOG, type Explorer.Exe and click OK

Solve : Problems with video files?

My color output changes very weirdly when I play .avi, .wmv, .mpg, etc.. it doesn't matter what player I open the file with so I'm pretty sure it's not program-related. I am using win98 se w/ geforce fx5200 and latest drivers. can anyone help?TYPE dxdiag in the box and test for graphics, how much ram have you got?384 mb and the tests ran fine, but apparently there was a problem accessing directshowAwoodman:

When did this behavior begin? (Did it start just after you added a NEW video card?)

What do you mean by "color output changes very weirdly"?  (Do you mean the image is WAVY? or do you mean a primary color is missing?  or do you mean the image flickers?  Is the video action slow?)

PLS let us know,
Docthis began within the last few days and i have not recently added a new video card. the video doesn't run slow, but it could be the primary color is missing. it almost looks like a negative image. Quote

Solve : corrupt computer?

Success at LAST. or at LEAST I think so. I pulled the setup.exe file off another disk for another computer and it seems to be loading. Since this is a Windows ME file I should be able to use the 98 restore/RECOVERY disk to COPY over the ME.At least the RAM is sorted out. One module wasn't registering at all.

Still not sure what you are doing, but let's see if it loads.Apparently you can get HP recovery disks for that model from Ambry

Is there a way to check what programs are using how much memory?

There is a rather significant difference. How big is the drive and what PERCENTAGE does that 21 GB represent?

If you have a 200 Gb drive you would need 15% free-space to run defrag.

200 GB = 186.26 GB (Binary) and 15% = 27.94 GB

So if your drive is 200 GB you would be 6.94 GB short.

Solve : Print Spooler Delay?

Answer»

On my XP machine, it will TAKE TWO minutes for an item to print out on any one of three printers the computer accesses, through any application.  However, if I stop services to the print spooler and restart, the PRINTING will start in 5 seconds.  I have to reset the spooler for every print job to get the desired results.  What can I do to keep from having to stop and restart the spooler?Print Job Notification

By default Windows notifies a USER with a popup message that their print job has been completed on the printer. This setting controls that behavior. Open your registry (Start/Run/Regedit) and find the key below.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\Providers]

Value Name: NetPopup
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, named "NetPopup" and set it to equal "0" to DISABLE notification or "1" to enable it.   Restart the printer spooler service or restart Windows for the change to take effect.
