Solve : Re Emails ... is this even possible??

Answer»

I'm working with Windows 98 SE and using Netscape V7.2 ...  plus connected to the internet via Telus ADSL - and I feel a bit foolish even asking this question.

If one, using a home computer and with no association with any business whatever, is positive they've sent an email to a certain person, how is it possible for someone else not even on one's email list - nor known to the original person the email was sent to - nor with any access to my computer - suddenly have full knowledge of what was said in the email?

Is this even possible? Surely once the email is sent, no one can access emails sent or received?

Thanks so much,
MaraMara, you mention that this mysterious third party isn't in your address book and is unknown to the recipient. But.... is the third party known to you?Yes, this person is known to me - so I'm truly baffled how any of this is possible.

MaraI'm getting the impression there are personal issues at work here, that you probably are not comfortable going into.

Is there a printed version of this e-mail in circulation? Is there anyone else in your home who may possibly may have COMMUNICATED with this individual? Also, while it's not the case now, has this individual EVER had access to your computer that you're aware of?

Unless the party you speak of has advanced hacking expertise, someone associated with you or the recipient is responsible for this message being relayed. The first thing you should do is change your email password. Then talk to the recipient to make sure it was not passed on or made public from that end.

My 2½¢

Have you scanned for a key LOGGER?

Are you using a wireless setup?

Mara...... First of all what Email program are you using ?
Have you looked in your sent box to confirm that the Email in question was actually sent to the intended recipient.  I also use Telus as our service provider and have never heard of anything like this . I sense that there is something else going on .....reading between the lines in your post .......It's possible that a keylogger may be installed on your pc ........and is sending out a logfile of all your keystrokes ......and the text of a Email would be in the log as well .
If you require additional info ....please let us know. What part of the COUNTRY are you in ?  East or West ?

dl65  This is known as Spoofing and hijacking.

Anybody skilled in it, can take it up from the network while it is being sent.Thank you so much to all who are helping me with this - truly!

Yes, the person who  has knowledge of the email that was not sent to him, did at one time have complete access to my computer.

I've checked my 'sent' files and comfirmed the email was sent only once and only to the intended recipient and no one else.  The person I sent it to lives on the opposite end of the continent and has never met - or for that matter, likely knows of - this other person who suddenly has all this information.  (I live in the Vancouver area).

I didn't mean to sound secretive - it's just this person who suddenly has the information is actually related to me ... which makes all this so difficult.

I don't have a 'wireless setup', simply use Telus ADSL - plus I run AVG Antivirus and all updates each day in addition to  Ad-Aware ... but I'm afraid I haven't the faintest idea on how to scan for a 'keylogger'.

Would that mean the emails I've sent are stored somewhere within the email system and can be retrieved later somehow?  Or equally as horrible, would that mean that a 'keylogger' actually can read/know everything I do on my personal computer?

Thank you again for all the help - this truly means a great deal to me.
With kindest thoughts,
MaraMara....... Check your Email .....I just sent you some info that might help you .

dl65  Mara...... A keylogger records every key stroke you make ......as well as every location you visit on the net and any files you may access on your pc .......... Then the log can be sent to another pc and you'd never know .

I can think of another method which wouldn't require keyloggers. He simply might have called up your ISP and fraudulently obtained the user name and password information for your email account.

Raptor, I went to each link you sent and read them thoroughly - and shall download and use 'CW Shredder' 'just in case.'  And I'll no longer ever just assume that emails remain private simply by running anti-virus and Ad-aware programs each day.  If nothing else, this experience has been a true learning experience about email security - thank you!

RayG, when I read your words "He simply might have called up your ISP and fraudulently obtained the user name and password information for your email account" ...I realized that this person had both my user name and password information (which will be changed immediately!) ... but I'm wondering --- if I contact my ISP, would they have a record of of this?

dl65, thanks for explaining that a 'keylogger' is a very frightening thing!! So far I haven't received your mentioned email, but really look forward to reading it - thank you!

Oddly enough, this entire situation would somehow be 'easier' to cope with if the person in question wasn't a relative.  Sad sigh.  Funny how I wouldn't have dreamed of sharing my computer password and email access with even a friend, but a relative seemed  different somehow.  This whole thing is so so sad but a lesson I won't forget.

Thanks again for your kindess and help,
Mara

Solve : 100% CPU when online?

Answer»

I am using MS Wind XP Home.  When I connect to my network at home (wireless) to go ONLINE, my processes go to 100%.  When I disconnect, it drops to normal.  This happened once before and there was a problem with my wireless card driver and the printer driver.  This time, I took the printer driver off and all mention of a printer off.  The problem is still there.

I have RUN AVG, Trend Micro Housecall, Spybot, MS antispyware and adaware but nothing helps.  The only things I have connected to the computer is my keyboard (PS2), wired trackball (USB), monitor and speakers.

Any help would be great.Do the scanners find anything?Spybot and Adaware did show some spyware and deleted them but it did not change anything.  MS antispyware, AVG and Trendmicro did not show anything.  I have also CHECKED msconfig to see if there is anything starting that should not be but it LOOKS fine.Install a firewall and see if any programs are trying to contact the INTERNET that have no business doing so from your PC.

Solve : Hard Drive Space Gone??

Answer»

You guys MAY or may not remember me, but i had an issue with windows a week or two AGO. i believe my NEW issue may be related...

the First thing I tried when i got windows re-installed was try a recovery program. Easy Recovery Pro. not only did it not work, it diddn't even seem to try. once it tried to scan the hard drive, it would just close itself. i used Avast! antivirus to scan to make sure there wasnt any viruses on my system, and my system was clean.

So after a hard decision, i gave up trying to recover my files. after i installed a game (Unreal II: The Awakening), it emediately said that my disk space on drive C: was running low. It's an 80 GB Hard Drive! how could i be low on space so soon?
i looked in my C: drive and hovered over the folders to see how big they were (Windows, Program Files, Documents and Settings, etc)

all of them put together dosent even cross 10 GB of space. What could this mean other than there are alot of things on the hard drive that windows did not erase? i believe there may still be hope for my things. if not, then how do i remove that used space? are there any recovery programs you can recommend?

thanks again guys... Quote

(Unreal II: The Awakening)

You'll love the ending. The ending is better than the entire Unreal I single player experience.Avast covers all of the above links, because i've tried half of them already, and they came up with nothing. i'm at a loss now.
this might be because i chose to install windows XP on the old broken/existing one without reformatting, hoping i could later get those dang files back...

and i'm just getting started with Unreal,
i never even had time to finnish the first level. Quote

Probably is.  Look at Administrative Tools--Computer Management--Disk Management.  The "missing space" will be there.  ASSIGN it a drive letter and you should be able to access your files.
I looked in Disk Management, and i did not come across any "missing space"...

i recently found something else. one of the recovery programs i used a few days back appearently recovered a ton of really REALLY OLD files into my Documents and Settings Folder. files that were already backed up for a long LONG time. so i deleted them, that cleared half of my hard drive's free space O_o.

i guess that solves the problem? lol
sorry guys, false alarm i guess

thanks guys Quote

Now that you have all of that junk off the drive you could use Eraser to clean up the free-space.

Just run through the clean-up procedure below to see if you can make some more space on your drive.

Solve : Drilling down? Simple question?

Answer»

I'm trying to install a router on our systems (I have two roomates). Got everything working on my sister's computer, but I'm having trouble with mine. I think I just need a dos command, but I can't remember any of them. Anyways, as I'm RUNNING CMD, it SAYS:

C:\Documents and Settings\owner\>

and I need it to say:

C:\>

But I can't remember how to do it, and my searches have turned up nothing. I'm probably not wording it correctly, but I really can't remember any dos commands, and my brushes with TECH support on all three sides have left me beyond frustrated. Anyone know what I'm supposed to do? Any help at all WOULD be appreciated.

The commands you need to use should all work from the -  C:\Program files\Support Tools - prompt if you install the Support Tools from your XP CD.

When you get the Support tools installed type - help - at this prompt and, when you see the command(s) you need to use, type name of the command and add /? to see a full list of the useable parametres.

Solve : Crash to Desktop from Game?

Answer»

I have a 3 or 4 year old emachines COMPUTER running windows ME.  My problem is that when I play games, the computer crashes to the desktop.  The WEIRD thing is, this changes the screen resolution to the lowest setting.  The only way I can get to the start menu is to change the res back to normal otherwise the bottom of the screen is cut off.  Also CTRL + ALT + Delete does nothing when this happens.

I am also having problems properly shutting the computer down.  I'm not sure if this is realated in any way but when I select shutdown, the screen goes blank and the pc is frozen.

THANK in advance for the help.

AdamEardleya:

Does this happen when you play certain games, or when you play any game?  For example, are you able to play the Windows Me pinball game without this problem arising?  Does it only happen when you play games via the Internet?  Does it happen only when you play 3-D games?

You need to reinstall the video drivers on your system.

Check the device manager (right click on my computer) and look under DISPLAY ADAPTOR. Check the PROPERTIES to see if there are any problems or if the correct card is shown.

It's not as difficult as it sounds.

Solve : user 32.dll question ????

I have a problem with games that I recently have INSTALLED. When I try to start it, I get a message that says: "The procedure entry point GetRawInputDeviceList could not be located in the dynamic link library USER 32.dll" this goes for several programs that I have installed, particularly when it comes to games. I Have installed an open source PROGRAM cald Wings 3d, wich also get me this message, in the upstart, but it works fluidly without any kind of problem. Right click on it & check it's properties, make sure you have execute permission for it.Your computer is in a network?
Make some cd-s with drivers, antispyware, microsoft updates (eventually), some of the things Raptor told (I recommend you Avast! as antivirus) and repeat the windows installation without connection to network (unplug the network cable from your computer!).
So... install Windows with drivers and applications, install antivirus, install firewall and after that you may try to plug in your network cable.
I don't know what to say else. It could be a faulty Windows installation, it could be a virus. If you don't have important data (or much data) on your harddisk, better recreate the partitions (delete partition, recreate partition). What did you do during the reinstallation of OS.

Well for a start ...never attempt to do updates of any type WHILST you are running virus scans.......
My advice to you would be format your hard drive .........
Do a clean install .....
Then install your anti virus program .
Now go on line  .
Get any Anti virus updates.
Then get your M/S updates
Then install your other programs

Solve : My poor computer.?

Answer»

Blagh. I went through the system32 file (yes, I know, not smart for somebody who isn't a computer expert) in a desperate attempt to delete the spyware/worms that were taking over.. well, I got rid of some.. but I accidentally deleted one of the necessary files my computer needed to run.

So, I burned windows xp home onto a CD and booted that onto my computer, used system restore and what not. I thought it would all go back to normal, but EVERYTHING got deleted.

I'm in the process of getting my data/media back, but some things just don't work. For example, when I restart the computer, all my settings are changed back to default.. also, I can't do any appearance customization, when I go to desktop or taskbar properties.. well, basically nothing works. I can't even look at pictures, .jpeg is supposedly an invalid format, etc...

What did I do wrong?!Your question should be "What did I do Right?"

You should use malware removal tools such as AdAware, Spybot S&D or specific removal tools instead of doing things manually!!

If you burned a corrupt XP system then re-installed from that CD then you have just re-installed the corrupt system.

Do you have an original full XP cd or and older full version with an XP upgrade disk?System restore & last known good config do tend to send your computer back in time.
To a time when it had virtually no brain at all.
I have never recommended anyone to use it.1. You didn't make a drive image shortly after installing everything when the system was running well. If you had you could restore ... easily.

2. You didn't keep a running up-to-date drive image so you could restore ... easily. (Yes I am. Everyone else says so too. I just think that they hate Engineers.)

3. You relied on system restore which can make a real mess of things and which is a misnomer too. (Microsoft hates me as well.) (Misrepresentation.)

4. You used an XP Home CD when your system is XP Professional. (Probably not, but when you're doing things wrong you might as well make a mess of this as well.)

5. You tried using scanreg /restore and couldn't understand why it wouldn't work when you should have been using sfc /scannow. (Typical mistake made by most people who upgraded from '98/ME)

6. You didn't make your own Windows CD by using base cunning and AutoStreamer 1·0

7. You didn't attempt a Repair install which might have saved your bacon. But then your 'religion' irrationally forbids you to eat bacon which is why you didn't think of it and have other problems with irrational things happening all the time.

8. You use a computer for just about anything except computing and have no idea why that should be so and how the world was run before anyone ever invented these Big Brother machines. (Blame Orson Welles whose descendants probably have shares in MS)

9. You didn't realise that you could do just about everything without paying if you used open source programming and, by this simple measure alone, allow Ms French to SEE a great deal more of her husband instead of being a Windows Widow forever staring out of the Windows of their home waiting for Bill to come home.

10. You didn't write to the government and the monopolies commision asking "Why is it that if we can have open source for free that Windows isn't for free as well?"

Don't worry! I am doing all of these things wrong too!

Just don't tell anyone!

11. You have never realised that you are just a number in a numbers game where the rich and private enterprise  corporations get richer by selling things that people don't really need to those whom they regard as suckers instead of enlisting and putting an end to private enterprise business, wheeler dealers crooks, hoodlums and drugs bosses in defence of the womenfolk of the country in which you live.

Instead you, along with just about everybody else allow women to appear in pornographic editions and to sell their 'charms' in bordello windows like so much meat hung up for sale.

Apparently this sort of behaviour has something to do with a litany, whatever that is and apparently has something to do with 'holiness' whatever that is.

Solve : missing gb from every partition?

Answer»

i have three partitions, and on every one, the size of all the files is smaller than the used space on the disk, up to 3 or 4 gb, including hidden folders. what could be wrong? Some space will be taken by boot blocks, etc.i'm using win xp sp2.
c is 19.5 gb missing 2.6, d is 29.2 missing about 400 mb and e is 62.9 missing 4 gb.
and what are boot blocks? Quote

what are boot blocks?

Information required to boot the OS. There is also space used by the file system to store the file location on the the disk. Then there is the matter of overhead. If your disk is formatted with 8k sector size, a 1k file will use 8k of space since that is the smallest segment that can be used. Check out the calculations that Mac posted above and you will see that there is no missing space. Quote

Just to check.  Is the drive formatted to FAT32 or NTFS?

If you type - cmd - in the Run window and then type - CHKDSK - with no /f switch, do you see 4096 bytes in each allocation unit and is there any mention of bad sectors?

E.G.

sorry for the late response
it's ntfs
i have 0 kb in bad sectors
yes, there are 4 kb in each alocation unit. what are they? and why 4 kb?4KB or 4k is the standard NTFS format.

Is it the System Restore information which is taking up space?

Do you save a LOT of files which are smaller than 4KB?

If you have a 6KB file then it will take up two 4KB allocation units.

But if you have a 2KB file it will take up just half of one 4KB allocation unit.

If an entire partition is GIVEN over to 2KB files you'll lose 50% of the space.i get your point. i save a lot of website links in new NOTEPAD documents, though i don't think there are any more than 50. and they're all on one partition. plus, for 2 gb of space, there have to be a heck of a lot of them. so i doubt it's this.
isn't the system restore on the main partition? and how do i check how much space it takes, i can't FIND any files that hint to this.
could it be anything else causing this, like system files that grow in space over time? You can get to the System Restore settings via Control PANEL, System, System Restore, and then click on the Settings button.

As you can see I have the XP installation on drive C: only monitoring drive C:

What you can't see is that I have the XP installation on drive D: only monitoring drive D:

Solve : Desktop display problem?

Answer»

My Mother has asked me to sort a problem out on her computer, the problem is that on her windows desktop purple dots and lines appear all over the place sometimes obscuring text and pictures etc. When A GUI is opened it leaves tracks surrounding them which only go away when other GUI's are opened on top (replacing them with there on dashed line tracks). I have updated drivers for Hardware and software and tried changing resolution refresh rates etc to no avail. The tech info for her computer are as follows :

Toshiba Satelite P30
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 (driver ver 5.1.2001.0)

Did your scan for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware?

Does the same happen when you enter the BIOS?Thanks for your reply Raptor, I knew I forgot something... I scanned a while ago for viruses and found a Bagel (??) virus at some point but got rid of it, there was also a win32 virus which I also got rid of,after that I changed the antivirus program  (was previously using antivir - now EZ)  updated and OK. Would one of these viruses have cause this and if so can I reverse the effects without having to re-write her hard drive?

The temp of the laptop is 29 degrees, the dots seem random but are focussed around icons, over text etc the lines appear whenever a GUI is oppened, if the GUI is MOVED more appear around the new position and some of the other lines from the first position dissapear. Multiple virus scans/malware/spyware scans completed and computer is clean (scanned using 6 different pieces of software - all fully updated). No sound problems which could also be caused by overheating and the problem was there before Real Player was installed on the machine.  I only installed drivers from the makers websites i.e Toshiba/ATI. I think thats all the questions asked, I will make sure the fan is not COVERED (but I'm pretty sure it's not)

MacAnd you have completely uninstalled the current videocard drivers?

Use Driver Cleaner to be certain. Follow the instructions to the letter.Swap monitors.  It's a new Laptop surely there is a resolution to this problem that doesn't involve getting a new MONITOR? I will try the drive cleaner thing then maybe I'll just re-write the hard disk if that doesn't work?
MacDoes it have a Video outlet for a monitor on the back? Hook it up to a free-standing monitor and see if it is working OK.

Do you know if the laptop has been dropped at all?

Otherwise I would look immediately to the warranty.Just try this. Right-Click the desktop and open the Properties. Click Settings, and see if the colour is set to 32-bit (Highest).

Solve : Partition Without Formatting?

Answer»

Does anyone out there know a way that i can partition my hard drive without formatting it?

please SOMEONE helpIf it is already formatted you could use TeraByte BootIT NG's partition resizer. Don't install BootIT NG, just CANCEL all install SCREENS and go straight to the Partiton Work button.

If you have data on the drive I would advise you to back it up first, disconnect from the Internet and remove the anti-virus program to prevent it from interfering with the resizing.

You can use Image for Windows and Image for DOS to make and restore drive images easily.

All four programs cost as little as US$60

There is also Partition Magic.

If you want a freeware partiton resizer then there is - qtparted - an open source program. What is the drive size, how much free-space is there and how do you want to partition it?

Remember to leave enogh free-space for additional programs, updates & the paging file plus you need to leave 15% free for defrag to run.Ok
I have two hard DISCS:

Disc 1 - Master Drive C  - 20GB NTFS

Disc 2   Slave Partitioned   Drive D  -   2GB FAT
                                         Drive E  -  38GB NTFS

-----------------------------------------------------------------
what i want :

Disc 1 - Master Drive C  -  18GB NTFS
                        Drive F  -   2GB FAT

Disc 2 - Slave Drive  D  -  2 GB FAT
                     Drive  E  -  38GB NTFS
-------------------------------------------------------------------
Win xp is installed on drive C

Drive D: and E: are completly clean

i want a partition (E) so that i can install dos (7.1) and play an old game (QUAKE)Delete D: & E:

I think that it would be better to shrink C: down to 8192 MB if you can so that it makes the drive easier to image.

(You can then move the My Documents and Email to a partition for ease of backing up.)

Anyway 20 GB = 19073.49 MB

18 GB = 17166.14 MB

That leaves 1907.35 MB for drive D: on disk 1 as the first Logical in the Extended partition.

2048-1907=141 so you might want to make the C: drive 17025 MB so that D: comes out at 2048 MB (approx)

Re-make the Extended and Logicals on disk 2

PUT in your first 2048 MB (2 GB) drive E: on disk 2 and then the rest as drive F:

Re-assign the drive letters where necessary making any CD-ROM drives G: & H:

You'll need to format D: , E: & F: but not C:

Don't know anything about games, Virtual drives, or DOS emulation, so don't ask!If you decide to go with a partitioning program, don't buy Partition Commander from VCOM. It's worse than worthless.

It's killed my computer. Quote

when i am looking at my windows screen, my task bar is at the top.  Not sure how it got there, but i want it back in the BASEMENT.  I cannot drag it there.  any options??

Ford2:

RIGHT-click on the taskbar and make sure Lock the Taskbar is unchecked.  Click and hold down your left mouse button on the taskbar and drag it to the bottom of your display.  Release the mouse button.  Right-click on the taskbar once again and check Lock the Taskbar.

That should do it,
DOCI put mine at the top because there are far less occasions when you go to the top edge of the screen with the mouse than when you go to the bottom.

If you have auto-hide on to get more space on the screen it can get annoying if you take the mouse cursor too far down and the task-bar pops up in the way of the button you wanted to click on.

I would leave it at the top.

Dismantled and CLEANED my five year old mouse yesterday. Now have a SuperMouse which is better than new. (Beware springs! Take GOOD note of where they go!)

My sister took hers to the Vet and he gave her a new one. But then her husband is a Vet anyway.

Just make sure that you see the right sort of vet.

David, I did this very thing 3 times today, on different machines.  Your email would have been on your old account desktop but not your new desktop.  SET up your account again on your new desktop.  Then import your email messages and address book from your old account (or are they all deleted?)
With Outlook open, go to file, import/export. (You may have to go to C: Program FILES -folder options, view hidden folders before you can find the information. )  Follow the prompts and look for the name where your old account was, local settings, identities, #####, microsoft, microsoft outlook. (That was the path for Outlook Express)  I hope that helps!  GOOD luck.
You can also transfer all your mails on to a personal folder.

Now SIMPLY add this .pst file in your new mail account.

Solve : Problem starting Windows?

Answer»

Hi Computer  Hope

Yesterday, I started my computer just as always; however, a black screen popped up saying that windows was not properly shut down last night - though I always do.  It gives me options of starting into safe MOD, using last known good configuration, and starting windows normally.  The thing is, a second after my choice, no matter what I choose, takes me to an error screen.
The screen suggests a possible software/hardware PROBLEM, but I haven't installed any hardware for months, and I check for spyware and viruses nightly.

I USE a HP RUNNING Windows XP, and if it helps, I've copied down the error here:

check the bios setup.........to see what it reports......

unless you have changed hard drives.......from a 2gig......to a 30gig...........have you!?Hi,
Sorry it's taken so long to check in.....Still trying to fix things.
No I didn't down grade my hard drive,I formatted my computer with  a Boot disk called Drive Scrubber  by Iolo.I have down loaded a tool from Dell and when iI checked my hard drive with it it says 30 gb but it doesn't tell me how to get them back. Also when i check the computers properties  under hard disk it doesn't name the hard drive it just says generic type.I have a western digital is this supposed to show up in properties??Boot to your ME bootdisk and at the A:\> prompt type fdisk, and then PRESS ENTER. If your hard disk is larger than 512 MB, you RECEIVE the following message:

"Your computer has a disk larger than 512 MB. This version of Windows includes improved support for large disks, resulting in more efficient use of disk space on large drives, and allowing disks over 2 GB to be formatted as a single drive."

Do you wish to enable large disk support? Y/N

Answer Y for Yes.

Delete the partitions you see and make new ones, setting the Primary DOS partition to A for Active.

Press the Esc key until you are asked to re-boot and when the computer has re-booted format the drives you have made.

Then you can install properly.Hi,
Thanks for the reply..I'm about to attempt this again..just working up the courage.I already down loaded and burned off the drivers I needed so here goes nothing.
thanks for your help
Good luck. Let us know how you get on, if you will.

Solve : Strange problems with my computer?

Answer»

Hi, new to the forums and was wondering if anyone had a clue on what's going on with my computer.

Everything is ok with my computer but there are some strange problems I'm having. Windows MEDIA Player will not play and this message pops up:

Quote

Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The file is either corrupt or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play.

WMP is fine and I have made the steps to try and fix the problem but no luck and the files I've tried to play are certainly ok. I don't understand what's wrong with it. :-/

Also, the 'Recent File' menu in a program such as WordPad is always blank. Why is this? I get these two errors ASWELL sometimes when I already have a document open and then I try and open up another one:

Quote
WORDPAD caused an invalid page fault in
module MSWRD832.CNV at 0167:0140f6d5.

Quote
WORDPAD caused an invalid page fault in
module MFC42.DLL at 0167:5f401351.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks What type of files are you trying to play.

What's the ext.WMV and MP3's.Do these files play somewhere else.

How can you say that those are not corrupted.Data corruption is often caused by faulty RAM or simply that the RAM modules are not PROPERLY seated.

Click on the link below and download the .pdf file which will show you how to re-seat the RAM.

Check the security of all wiring and cables whilst you're in there.

Then try running MemTest86 - overnight - to see if any errors are reported.

Also RUN the drive MANUFACTURER's diagnostic diskette over the drive.

Solve : upgrading pc from window me to xp?

Answer»

hi
when I try to upgrade my WINDOWS me to xp I go up to 50% but when starting computer to continue the rest of SETUP I get the massege"' setup had determined that drive c: is couurpted and cannot be repaired setup can not continue.to quit setup press f3.I don't have any problem when I am using windows me.Is it related to format and parition I made to hard disk before or I have to update the bios.my cpu is pentium3 864 and my mother BOARD is asus cusl2-c.I will appriciate your help in advance.Did you delete and format the partitions before installing. Are you trying to "upgrade" to XP? ie not reformatting and laying a new OS?

Cause if so, XP dont like ME and will not upgrade.  If you put in the disk and run the check system compatability option it should tell you as much.

Correct me if I am wrong please, but all the ME computers I have changed to XP COULD not be upgraded only done as a new installI would do a clean install SAM, you'll be sure of a much better result. It is also much better to re-partition and FULL format the drive using the XP CD.

Does your XP CD have SP2?

Solve : blue screen crash?

Answer»

I am having trouble with a computer running windowa xp home. Every time I try to unplug a memory stick from a usb port it causes a blue screen crash with the words " No more IRP stack locations" . The computer also seems to list more usb ports in DEVICE manager than the computer has. Any ideas pleaseDo you unplug them the safe way?

Does this occur to only one memory stick?Derrick:

Like Raptor said, point at the icon in the notification area (next to the clock on the Windows XP taskbar) and double-click the one that says Safely REMOVE Hardware.

In the Safely Remove Hardware dialog box, click Close and then click Close again.  You may remove the Flash Drive, Thumb Drive, or whatever you have when Windows lets you know it is safe to do so.

Regards,
DocThanks for replying. Yes have tried what you suggested but even that causes a crash. It does it with anyone of the memory sticks we have, and also my card reader for my camera. It has`nt always been like this it was once working FINE. It seems as if the computer dos`nt like the usb storage type devices.is the stick possibly corrupt, guys? The stick works fine in two other computers. The blue screen has the following message. No more IRP stack locations. Not sure what this means or how to free them up Quote

When has this problem first occured? And how?

Try reinstalling your USB drivers.I agree with Raptor.
Go into Control Panel/ System/Hardware/Device Manager...
Right click all USB listings and select Remove. Do this for all USB listings.
When you re-boot WinXP will detect all your USB ports and re-install the drivers for them.

patio. Derrick:

Looks to me like it may be a software driver problem:

Check the WEB site of the storage device maker to see if they have a NEWER Windows XP driver that corrects the problem for you to download and install.

Solve : Bluescreen when installing windows XP?

Answer»

Hi

I'm trying to install Windows XP Pro SP2 on another computer in the house.

I first had a problem with the file driver.cab that wouldn't be copied and it was needed for the install.
I removed all unnessesary hardware such as CD drive, network card, soundcard, mouse, USB-card and I only left one memory stick left (256 MB). The file could now be copied and the installation started.

After the installation is almost COMPLETED, I get this bluescreen KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR.

I took a photo of it so you can read the whole thing
http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/8649/pict00052px.jpg

I don't know if the first error has anything to do with the second one. I tried the solutions the error message is giving me, what should I do?

Is this any good...

Troubleshooting "Stop 0x00000077" or "KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR"

...?How are you trying to install Windows XP and what are your system temperatures? When you prepared the hard-drive did you delete the old partitions and re-partition followed by FULL FORMATTING?

If the XP CD has any dirt, film or scratches on it these would produce a copy error.

Have you run the drive manufacturer's diagnostic diskette over the drive to see if it is OK and how about running a test on the RAM modules? Quote

That link isn't very much of a help since I can't get inside Windows :/ Nor safemode.

If I boot my computer I get past the Windows Logo and then the Win XP SETUP starts, which later leads to the bluescreen.

I have tried to do full formatting many TIMES and I deleted the old partitions everytime.

Do you need to be inside Windows to check the "System Log in Event Viewer"? If not, how do I do?

CPU temperature is 51 C and system is 32 C which should be normal yes?

I can also add that I have tried three different Windows CD's.

Does the error reoccur each TIME? That may indicate a problem with your hardware.

Try writing zeroes to the Hard Disk Drive instead of only defragmenting.

Solve : Windows XP Updates?

Answer»

I installed Windows XP on my computer with a CD my mom used. I recently got a little thing that says there are X Windows Updates ready to be installed, but everytime I click on it, it says there was an error in the installation of the updates because the CD key is wrong or something along those lines.

How can I get the updates to be installed correctly?Armando:

You must activate Windows XP before you may install any updates.  Also, after 30 days you will not be able to use XP in any mode but Safe Mode till you do activate it.

Regards,
DocI don't think I got what you meant.

I have been using Windows XP for a long time now, I can use Safe Mode, I just can't install the Widows Updates. SOmething like Service Pack 2 that I can't install.Armando:

OK, lets try this:

Connect to the Internet through your ISP.

Once connected, click Start then select Windows Updates.

When you get the error message, write down EVERY word.

Leave a reply with every word here so we may figure out the cause.

Ok, I will do that tomorrow as I can't do it now.

Thank you.No problemo!

I'll be online about this time tomorrow (God willing) and will look for your response.

Take it easy,

Windows XP Service Pack 2 cannot install.

The product key used to install Microsoft Windows may not be valid. For more information about why you received this error message, and steps you can take to resolve this issue visit www.howtotell.com.

Well, I guess I answered my own question, unless you know what the problem is and how to solve it other than by going to the website.

Armando:

www.howtotell.com is not a legitimate Microsoft Web site.

Click on this link and see if you get to the Windows Update site:

I have another harddrive with xp home of course with the codes but without the cd. I also have a copy of xp on cd without the codes. I want to completely reload xp pro onto all three drives. Can this be done without the cd?Armando ......Actually that is a legit M/S website .....
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/howtotell/en/default.mspx

The problem you are having is that the Windows software verification APP SEES  the hardware configuration being differant to that on you Moms computer.........
When you entered the serial code ....was it accepted ok and did the activation go ok ?

dl65  If the copy of XP which you are using is still installed on your Mother's computer then it would illegal to try to use it.

I recently wanted to install Office XP on my current XP computer. Office XP had been used on an ME computer and I could not get it to register so I had t make a 'phone call. The Assistant was - very - helpful and also - very -courteous and I was able to register Office XP in the space of about 15 minutes.

Now why didn't I think of that before?

Probably because I haven't got Windows Holy Edition!

*CENSORED*! Did I say that? Must be having a bad DAY.

Where do I get an angry smiley from?Have you tried using AutoStreamer 1.0 to make a slipstreamed XP SP2 CD?

If there is anything wrong with the CD it will probably tell you.

If not then you have an XP SP2 CD with which to do a clean install and which you can also use to run - sfc /scannow - if you ever need to.

Solve : Help-locked out of new installation?

Answer»

Hello members

I just shut myself out of the new installation on a new HDD. I have installed W2Kcomplete with all updates and started installing the network and work progs.
My mouse is a optical intellimouse explorer3.0 and has 4 or 5 buttons. I had set one for delete and one for enter as I have on this HDD(which I need for the design prog). Now for some reson the delete wasn't working which I had also happen before so I had a look at the drivers and installed the "right" intellimouse explorer3.0 driver. I did a restart and that is it.
I can't work with the key board either as that seems to be out aswell.
I tried through safety mode, no chance either because through my network I have to enter a logon password and keyboard and mouse are not working.
Has anyone an IDEA how I can get around this??
Any help is very much appreciated

Thanks

Luregn Have you tried using a PS/2 hard-wired mouse and keyboard temporarily?Luregn.....At what point did both the keyboard and mouse cease to function ?
Are you sure you have the appropriate drivers installed ?

dl65  Hello

I have tried with placing the mouse at one usb port-no change.
Hi dl65
I had the system up and running smoothly, just that not all the buttons on the mouse where working properly(that means; I had set one of the buttons for delete and one for enter and that was not going satisfactory) As said before it (the mouse problem, not the keyboard as well)happen on this system and managed to solve,as much as I can remember by downloading the right driver for W2K.
Obviously I can't get in there???
LuregnLuregn.....  Are you able to physically disconnect from your network ?........and then try booting up in safe mode ........then go into your DEVICE manager and look at both the keyboard and mouse and see if they require any additional drivers.

dl65  Thanks dl65
I will try that later in the day and get back.
Could it be that by disconnecting physicaly from the network that I would not have to logon? Say if I then get in safe mode it will still be difficult if both(mouse and kb) are not working.
Unfortunatly I started work and can't access right now as I have to place the new HDD in the compy box.
So I will get back after trying later in the day.

Thanks

Luregn
If this concerns a wireless mouse, try reconnecting it according to the manual's instructions.it is an optical but not wireless.
Does that sound IMPOSSIBLE?

Is the optical light on or off?

If it is off, try moving it to a different port or use an USB to PS/2 converter.

Be CERTAIN that you connected the mouse to the proper port (Green, not PURPLE)

If it did, it would be called a Spyware scanner. Always TAKE in doubt what these companies tell you.

Using AVG Free instead to see if it can detect any ADDITIONAL problems is a good idea as well.

Virus scanners
AVG Free

Trend Micro Housecall
-- Online anti virus scanner.

Anti spy/malware
