Solve : Rather strange problem?

Answer»

My computer has been experiencing a rather peculiar "problem" for a while now and no one can figure it out.

Every now and then, I get a message titled Server Busy "The selected action cannot be performed because the server is currently busy../ then it says something else which I don't remember. I have two options, one is retry, the other is switch to. It takes several clicks for it to go away, and when it does go away the result is an advertisement pop-up on IE.

As I said, strange thing, rather annoying. It makes my computer slow and then results in a pop-up.

Any help is appreciated.Armando:

The server is likely a Web server that a program on your computer is trying to contact so the pop up ads may be sent to you.

Try downloading, installing and running this program:

http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

It is one of the best adware REMOVAL programs available (i've been using it for years, now) and it is free for personal use.

Regards,
DocDoc,

I already have that program, I install all updates and all definitions on it every week or so. I have been running it for a long time now. Unfortunately, that hasn't done anything to help the problem.

I'm thinking (I'm not computer PERSON, so my thinking might lack logic) that the server busy thing shows up because the pop up trying to "pop up" cant because I have pop up stopper.

I don't know :SArmando:

Have you installed any browser helper objects (like search toolbars for Internet Explorer, or something that adds a feature to your Web browser)?

I use Mozilla FireFox but I do know on my IE I have AIM and MSN toolbars.

I have another thread in the IE section of the forums asking about deleting IE because I did think that could be one of the problems causing my to get these server busy thingsWhat operating system are you using?

[glb]Flame[/glb]OK, lets try this:

Click Start then Run.

In the Run dialog box, type MSCONFIG and click OK.

In the System Configuration Utility, click the Startup tab.

Write down every program (Startup Item) listed there and leave a reply here to let us know what they are. One of us will do some reasearch and let you know which one is likely responsible for the annoying popups.

I have that and I have already used it

I will delete AdAware and I'll run the other one and post the results ASAP.

Thank you FlameNo NEED to delete ad-aware; it's a helpful program. Did you mean CLOSE ad-aware?Oh, ok- I won't delete it then

I'll just use the other one as well. Quote

Oops! I didn't see Flames post. I haven't used Microsoft's antispyware utility, but i've heard good things about it.

BTW, how's it going Flame?

Armando:

Gotta go!

Don't forget to use MSCONFIG and tell Flame and i what you find for Startup Items.

I'll try to check in tomorrow.

Solve : BLACK PLAGUE in Add/Remove Programs?

Answer»

I go to add/remove programs in the Contol Panel and all looks fine. There is the list of all the programs on my computer. I begin to scroll down the list, when about halfway down a large solid black area appears. Keep scrolling and the black area breaks up into wide black lines. Scroll down farther and the second half of my programs appears looking normal. If I click on this black area, the white area around it turns blue. This black plague doesn't seem to effect anything on my system, but it SURE is annoying and shouldn't be there. Tried system restore to no avail. Tried changing user accounts to no avail. Tried sfc /scannow, again to no avail. ANYONE have any ideas as to this Black Plague? Could it be virus? try a trend online scan.........or a over heating problem?Why do you call it Black Plaque?

Have you scanned for Viruses, Trojan Horses and Spyware? If yes, what scanners are used?Raptor - could be a virus. I use Norton Antivirus 2005. Hear it doesn't always detect everything. Also have us of Microsoft Anti Spyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, Spyware Guard, WinPatrol, Ad-Aware. Been wanting to try AntiVir Personal EDITION 6.27 (maybe a good time to start). Have tried them. If you have any other suggestions outside a full recovery I will try those also. Thanks.Have you scanned for Spyware as well?

I don't think it's spyware. I run Microsoft Antispyware, Spybot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware, daily. Also have Spyware Guard, Hijackthis, and WinPatrol on duty. I'm also fairly adept at Registry editing (been forced to remove programs manually, amoungst other things). Always backup the registry before any editing. Run RegClean and ASO's Advanced Registry Optimizer about once a month. But merlin_2, this REGSVR32 APPWIZ.CPL is new to me. I typed this in run and it came back to me with "DllRegisterServer in APPWIZ.CPL succeeded". I have no idea what that means??

That DEPENDS on WHETHER your local area network is set up as a workgroup or a DOMAIN, and on what operating system your local computer has installed.

How Come?

In the LAN you can have various OS's.

Further there can be a mixture of domains & workgroups.Install a TOOL such as DU meter.I'll give it a go.

Aren't there any commands like netstat, tracert, etc. by which i can get idea.

Solve : PC loops during boot up?

Hi, I read about my problem in one of the topics but I am totally new to this and do not know how to post my question on that specific topic. My computer keeps looping during boot up (I have windows XP). Yesterday we had a blackout and my computer shut off, today the computer kept freezing all day long today, it wouldn't even restart, had to shut it off manually. However, i think i also have a virus in system 32 because AVG keeps detecting it but cannot heal it or delete it. I have installed ewido, has been a lot of help but not ENOUGH. Now I cannot get to my files. Please let me know if you can help me and what type of information you need (remember I am totally new and need plenty of help).
thanks  Nailia:

Are you able to start your computer in Safe Mode? Do you recall the exact name of the virus AVG DETECTED?

DocThanks for your response, no I cannot start windows at all, it just keeps looping back to the same page where it gives me a choice to start in safe mode, ETC....
the name of the virus is system32/rdrv I have not been able to get rid of it at all, it seems to copy itself and it keeps popping up. But the day before yesterday we had a blackout and my computer was shut off....yesterday I starting having too MANY problems and then I was not able to open up windows... If your system is compromised to a point where Windows will not load, it might be better to reformat and erase the virus plus your Hard Disk Drives contents entirely.

Once you are done reinstalling Windows, take the proper security measures.

You can also repair Windows XP.

Installing and Using Recovery Console

Perform a Repair Installation

Which is highly unrecommended since you will most likely be using your compromised system afterwards.

Solve : extract attachments, move them into directories?

Hi! Do you know how can I MAKE in order to separate all the attachments of mails and STORE them in another directory? May I use a batch file? What do you suggest?
thank's
gb Right clik the attachments; choose Save as and POINT them to the Directory of your choice.

patio.  GB:

What e-mail program are you using?

Hello! Thanks for replying!
I think I didn't explain the situation clearly. So I hope I'll be more understandable this time.

My problem:

I receive every day about 300 mails, everyone has an attachment (a file Excel '.xls'). These mails are stored in a specified folder. As "e-mail program" I use Lotus Notes. I would like to separate the attachments from the mails and store the Excel files in another directory automatically. This means that I don't want to open every single mail and extract the attachment because it will take too long! I thought that maybe it was possible to accomplish this action with a batch file when I open the "e-mail program" or I boot my computer.

I've found that the "e-mail program" Eudora allow you doing this operation. The problem here is that this program doesn't distinguish between the attachments and put also unwanted attached file in the directory.

looking forward to your answers.
have a nice day

Solve : save my files?

Answer»

ok something happened to my computer this week and it's slowing it down majorly. I've decided to do a clean install since it's been about a year since i last did one. the only thing is that i want to save all of my music FILES and my pictures. I am planning to use my ipods external hard drive function. the reason for this is that ive discovered my partitions are pretty much a mess and i just want to START fresh. is using the ipod for this a good idea?What's the capacity of your ipod?

Do you have a CD writer.Reformat one PARTITION now, store the files there, reformat other partitions, PLACE files back.it's a 40 gig with about 20 gigs free space. i have already done the copy and paste to the ipod and opened it up as an external hd everything looks to be in order so farok i just reinstalled xp i put all of my important stuff (pictures, music, movies, etc.) on a seperate partition, only now that partition is not showing up. I ran the seagate CD and it SAYS that HD is not set up for use with this computer and that i have to format it any way to get the files out without doing that?Was that partition created earlier to installation of XP.The partition that the files are on is on my slave drive and it's saying my slave drive is non existant. but when i put in the seagate cd it finds it saying that i need to format it, is there a way to get to the files without formatting?i heard that a data recovery program may work, does anyone know of any freeware data recovery programs?http://www.pcinspector.de/file_recovery/UK/welcome.htm

Solve : Loading Video driver dilemma?

Answer»

I checked the advice already posted, but can't find a solution...I have drivers for my computer video (graphic adapter) loaded on 2 different floppies, in case one was faulty. When I go to the advanced settings tab and point the download to the A drive, I get an error message...illegal operation. (I reloaded Windows 98 on IBM 300GLs-2 of them). How else can I get these installed? It won't update Internet EXPLORER until the video is UPDATED. (??)
Thanks in advance, for any help.Hi

what about your other floppy?

you can also load the driver from certain sites.for that you need to note the version of your driver.

Go to your DEVICE manager and click display adapter and after selecting your video driver there go to properties driver --> update driver .

then point the exact location of your driver.

if it is a: drive , you will also need to point the exact folder location also like a:/win2k or like that.

after that restart pc and then right click desktop--> settings --> adjust your color.Thanks for responding. I tried both floppies in both computers. Neither one of them will allow any selection past A:. When I open the floppy, the symbol for the driver is there. Perhaps I should not save directly to the floppy. (?) Save to the hard drive, then the floppy.you can save it anywhere it is better to save it in other H drive like d: or E: because floppies can be damaged anytime.

you need to now your video driver's name (look at the label on that folder and then search in sites about that driver. you can download it ( follow the system requirement)

you can not load going directly to the floppy ... you have to go to device manager( as described earlier)Thanks. I will certainly try your suggestions in the morning and let you know the outcome. The computers are at school. I got the driver from the IBM site, so I'm relatively sure it's the right one for the IBM 300GL;but I will check to be sure.I was able to load the drivers. The floppies I was using had the driver DOWNLOADED from a Windows XP machine, and I was loading them on the Windows 98. Well, I found a Windows 98 machine and downloaded the driver, saved to the floppy, took it from the floppy to the problem computers' desktop and was able to launch and, using Device Manager, install the drivers. What a relief!
Thanks for your helpful advice! Good advice, Shouvik, and welcome to the forum.

RP boy...... It sounds like a heat related problem

Heat problems usually cause the computer to shut down, not restart.Sounds like the RAM may need to be re-seated or the fans are not cooling the computer properly. A lot can depend on where you are living, especially in tropical areas.

How much RAM is fitted, and what is the Make and Model of the PC you are using?The Power Supply use is ATX - 300 P - P4, Motherboard is ECS Elitegroup, RAM is DDRAM 128, Processor is Intel Pentium 4 1.8 ghz. How to turn off Automatic Reboot on System Failure in Windows ME. ThanksI'm not sure if ME has it, there is no one left in the world who uses ME. LOL!
Try
Right click>My computer>Properties>Advanced>Start up & RecoveryNot so. If this system fails I could restore my ME installation from a drive image and be sure that it will work very well indeed, being both fast and responsive, even if it does not have the power of XP and doesn't like big drive VOLUMES too much. It works better in a fairly small partition. (4096-8192MB) (See: www.ntfs.com)

It did take four years to get it working well, but that it a different story.

As you can imagine, with using a drive image, there is no system restore and it is pretty much 'tweaked' to *censored*. Quote

Depending on what you can afford, I found that simply by adding more RAM, 512MB or more, I could easily install XP Professional, even though I had to get a new modem, as the old one was incompatible.

My first reaction to your problem would be to re-seat the existing RAM module and see if there is anything loose INSIDE the computer.

TAKE PROPER ANTI-STATIC PRECAUTIONS!

ME will take 512 MB of RAM without adding any vcache settings to system.ini as I remember.

If you install Everest (see link below and subsequent links) you can not only check the temperatures which your computer is running but you can also find out more about your computer's mainboard and see just how much RAM it can take. Up to 1024 MB of RAM is suitable for most uses with XP when multitasking. 512 MB is usually plenty for home use.

If you can post the details and model number of the ECS Elitegroup mainboard it would help.

As a general rule built in Video is not such a good idea if the RAM use is - inclusive - meaning that the Video RAM is shared with the system RAM.

A separate Video card with its own RAM is a better proposition, especially where performance is concerned.

If you right-click My Computer how much RAM does it say in the Properties box? (Just in case it doesn't say 128 MB)
You can eliminate hardware problems by reformatting and reinstalling Windows ME. Although I would do exactly as Mac suggests and install Windows XP, which is much more stable.

If the problem still occurs, then you know you have to look into finding the piece of hardware that causes it.

Installing and Using Recovery Console

Perform a Repair Installation

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XP

Quote
Are the Boot.INI files different from windows XP home then windows xp pro?

Are they the same? or different?

BASIC boot.ini files for XP Home and Professional.

Control panel, System, Advanced, Startup and Recovery Settings, Edit ... the boot.ini file so it looks like...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

OR...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

If the Recovery Console is installed on the hard drive there will also be this extra line.

C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
1. Create a Bart PE iso, nothing extra added, just use defaults.
2. Boot system from PE CD.
3. Download LoadHive from http://www.matcode.com/codes.htm and put it on a floppy.
4. Run it from the floppy in PE, load C:\WINDOWS\System32\Config\software ... it will mount the hive as SOFTWARE_00.
5. Run regedit, find the SOFTWARE_00 subkey and navigate to CurrentVersion, export that subkey to the floppy.

(HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion)

6. Move to a working XP machine, backup the DigitalProductId key. Edit the reg file from the floppy to only contain the DigitalProductId key.
7. Merge the DigitalProductId key from the floppy, run Keyfinder (Magic Jellybean Software) and it should find the key. Make a note of this key. It is the one from your machine.
8. Merge the backup you made and run keyfinder again, to ensure that the original key has been replaced on the good machine.

Solve : Cd rom Read problems?

Answer»

I'm running Windows XP I have a HP DVD burner. When I put in a new CD my PC doesn't recognize that there is a new Cd in the DRIVE. When I go to My Computer and refresh "my Computer" it still shows what Cd was originally in. It only recognizes it when I load the whole PC. When I try to install a game or something I can't use the second disk of my program.

hopefully some one can help?It only recognizes it when I load the whole PC?
Yes the whole PC. It doens't recognize it at ANYOTHER time I put a cd in the CDROMThat means after changing the CD you have to reboot the system.

Rightoyes that is correct. It makes it difficult to install a game/program. I even tried a new Cd rom and still the same problemOkay,

Reboot the system without any CD in your drive.

Now put a CD, does your drive recognize it.no I'm afraid it still doesn't recognize that there is a CD in the tray ! I PRESS the refresh key a billion times and it still doesn't regonize itCheck your cdrom in your device manager.That means there is something wrong with the lens of your CD.

Try the CD cleaning softwares.

Try opening the cabinet and pushing the wires.

Last try another CD drive, this will let you know whether there is a problem with your drive or not.

Solve : No sound from my computer anymore?

Answer»

(I APOLOGIZE if I put this in the wrong forum. I'm completely dumbfounded as to what the problem is)

I have recently pulled my computer out of a MOVING box and hooked it up again, and I have discovered that no sound whatsoever plays on my computer. Nothing from typical Windows beeps to music. My speakers were plugged in, I made sure the volume was set very high (on both the computer and speakers) as well as doublechecking to be certain that Mute wasn't enabled. I even grabbed a pair of HEADPHONES to make sure the problem wasn't from the speakers themselves. Still no sound.

I checked the sound drivers, and my computer claims they're all working perfectly. In the Control Panel area, nothing sound-related is disabled or reported to have a problem. This gives me absolutely nothing to go on for finding the source of the problem myself.
(It's not like I could get successful results in a search engine when I have no "symptoms" to look up for a problem)

My operating system is Windows XP, if that's necessary.

I'm SORRY that I have no real information to share about my problem, but on the slim chance that someone might have had a similar situation, I would appreciate any help that can be offered.Sarm:

Are you sure the speakers are connected to the correct jack of your sound card/motherboard? Also, is the power LED on one of the speakers lit?

Yeah. The power is lit and they're plugged into the correct hole in the back. I checked again just now to be certain.The soundcard may not be properly seated. Quote

The soundcard may not be properly seated.

Quite likely and what happened to me, especially if the computer was laid on the L/H side with the mainboard at the top.

Pull out the power and take proper anti-static PRECAUTIONS before handling any of the cards and don't use excessive pressure otherwise you can crack the mainboard.

Check that there are no other loose cables inside.
My level of stupidity is only rivaled by your helpfulness.

It turns out that the sound card WAS properly positioned, nor were there any loose cords. But after opening it up, I realized that the "sound holes" that I was plugging the speakers into never reached the card.

In my haste to unpack my computer, I forgot that I had two sets of those holes. What makes it worse is the fact that I put the sound card in myself several months before, so if anybody knew about the extra sound holes, it would have been me (since I put them there).

This mistake of mine would have ended up more costly and embarassing, as I was under the assumption that I would need to purchase another card to replace the one I thought was broken. If I were not seperated by a computer and the fear of harassment charges, I'd hug you guys. No problem, glad it's something simple.Nice reply. Pleased to hear that it was something easily remedied after all.

Just another bad case of 'holiness'. i have same problem as 1st post above - HELP!!

speakers all plugged in, recently re-formatted to rid a virus, but no sound at all.... have Windows 98 (plain), no sound icon in bottom right of bar (media players "appears" to play visually, but not audio-wise!!

ARRRGGG. Do have a "configuration error in LINE 10 that shows up" ever-so-BRIEFLY when I start up my computer but goes so fast I can't read it.....then windows starts up.

Tried device manager, etc, but have no device set up... what do I do to "Set it up? I mean...all's I did was re-format (which I've DONE before) but this time...NO SOUND ICON/NO SOUND !!! ARRRGGG

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help!!!Install soundcard drivers.u are talking to am idiot, here (w/respect to computers, anyway)...

"HOW" do I install a sound driver thingy? (I assume e-thing is just dandy, but when I reformatted, s-thing went awry...)

Shall i just try to re-format again?....that is a pain...last resort if u have no advice (been living w/o sound for a month now!!)

HELP!! ps. i do not want to open up my computer as i KNOW it's just a mouse-click-ing thing that all I have to do is ACTIVATE my sound device by doing a bunc of mouse-clicks .....

You need to know the following:

  • The name of your soundcard
  • The manufacturer of your soundcard
  • The manufacturer its website
  • The operating system you are using

If you need additional information, feel free to post. Or search the forum.

Solve : Canceling XP setup?

Answer»

I have a VAIO MACHINE, was running XP upgrade setup. Setup failed with a cyclic redundancy check. Rebooting starts the setup process. Starting in SAFEMODE generates the error: setup cannot run in safe mode, setup will now restart....... how can I stop the loop?Try inserting a bootable CD/diskette and repair the OS or reformat the HDD.

Be certain to set the first boot device to the appropiate medium first.I would love to repair the os.... how can I get to the recovery console?
can't. booting from the XP CD gives me the option to 1. continue setup. 2. Exit setup and install a freash OS.
3. Cancel setup (which LEAVES the machine in the setup loop at next boot) Install is looking for NT5.CAT which is not on the CD.
Any suggestions?Well,  ya see........
I used the XP pro upgrade to upgrade the Vaio from XP home.........
machine has been fine for a long time....
user lost some file associations installing an audio amplifier device......
Then tried to run the upgrade CD thinking it would reset the associations.......
The user has alot of specific software on machine and a rebuild for the Vaio from scratch will cost many many hours........ I was looking to stop the setup loop and repair the file associations. Quote

Installing and Using Recovery Console

Perform a Repair Installation

How to perform an in-place upgrade (reinstallation) of Windows XPOK, so you're stuck with XP Home on the drive and an XP Pro setup which keeps on trying to run.

Try booting into safe mode and open up the boot.ini file then edit it to remove any reference to the XP Pro setup.

E.G.

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect

If he has installed the Recovery Console on the hard drive there will be another line so it will look like this...

[boot loader]
timeout=10
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect
C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons

You MAY find a line such as...

C:\WINNT\BOOTSECT.DAT="Microsoft Windows XP setup" or some such.

That is the one you'll need to remove.

Now see if you can get back to the desktop. If you can then copy the ntldr, ntdetect.com and boot.ini files to a floppy for future use. (Write-protect the floppy.)

If he has SP2 on the hard drive and if you have an XP Home SP2 CD then you could run SFC /SCANNOW to replace any damaged system files.

(This is one of the main reasons for avoiding OEM installations IMO.)

Don't know if this will help at all...Startup problem

As you can see, safe mode was not an option. Thanks for all the input folks I have wiped the drive and I am having the user beaten.

1. Can you enter safe mode?
2. Have you recently added new hardware or installed new drivers?
3. Why do you suspect AVG Free?It will enter safe mode, but it still kicks out to the blue screen. I haven't installed anything new, but I have disconnected the computer's internet connection. That's why I suspect AVG. When the program attempts to UPDATE automatically, it kicks out to the blue screen.What if you remove the program via the DOS prompt?Now that sounds like a plan. Could you walk me through it?Sorry, I have no skills that cover MS-DOS.

This may be helpful: A complete brief overview of each of the MS-DOS commands..

You may be ABLE to access a DOS prompt by pressing F8 before Windows ME loads. If not, type cmd or command in the RUN box, if you are able to.It can't be AVG, it doesn't start in safe mode.Thanks for the info. I couldn't get the DOS to work, so I CTRL-ALT-DELETE'd during start-up and stopped the AVG PROGRAMS from running before they really had a chance to load. With some timing, I got the computer to come up and uninstalled AVG. All is working again.Do not forget to reinstall AVG Free. You do require a virus scanner.

You need to set the CD-ROM drive as the first boot device. But first, insert the Windows XP CD-ROM. You should be prompted to enter the setup by pressing any key.

If you are using a poorly copied version of Windows XP, this may not work.yeah ive done that and pressed any key to boot from disk when that comes up, i get passed the partition drive stuff so it has copied the files but when it goes to restart the computer that message keeps coming up Quote

Once it is done reformatting, you need to ignore the message and let Windows XP begin installing. It will do so after the prompt is gone.ok thanks maybe i need a little patience!!!! I'll try waiting to see if it works ???im going grey real fast hehe
this is what i have done so far.....
welcome to set up...format partition using ntfs.....setup is formatting....

NTLDR: couldnt open drive multi(0) disk(0) rdisk(0) partition(1) I have waited and nothing is happeninggggg
also if i push any key now the computer restarts and the same message comes up again soooo i took out the cd and tried restarting the computer again and all i get is a compac logo saying 348mb ok then a black screen comes up with a blinking cursor in top left hand corner,
i have double, TRIPLE checked all cables plugged in correctly.
if i unplug that hd and try other hd i have same problem but when i take cd out for that hd it says ntldr missing press any button to restart so i do that and still get ntldr missing.................?

Solve : New to SCSI/ cant install windows?

Answer»

First of all I must say Hello to everyone.

Here is the issue. First time SCSI user. IM installing XP professional and all is fine untill the computer reboots for the first time. After rebooting, my computer will not recognize the drive. This occurs after it has been formated from XP install.

If i leave the cd in, the process will begin again. (no kidding)

I feel this could be a DRIVER issue. Its odd that the drive can be seen once windows begins install.

My MOTHERBOARD is junk. Soyo SY-p4vte. My controller card is unkown. I had it given to me from a Compaq server. The drive is a Seagate Cheetah MODEL # tST173404LCV. Im using and 80 to 68 pin adapter.

any suggestions? I appreciated any help.Did you choose to install Windows XP making use of the SCSI/SATA driver function which you are prompted to enter when you boot from the Windows XP CD-ROM?

I believe you have to press either F3 or F6.'I looked into that. Its F6, and its for third party drivers. According to the segate website I dont need any for the drive. I also never recieved any with the drives purchace.

Windows will see the drive and install to it. Its just when the computer reboots, and looks for the drive, it cant see it.

It will however see my contoller.

Thanks, for your suggestion. But im still stumped.Knowledge REGARDING SCSI/SATA drives ends there.

You have tried setting your first boot device to SCSI after installing Windows XP?Are you pushing that 'any key' that you are not supposed to push? (Step 13)

Solve : Norton Antivirus deleted a Windows nls file...?

Answer»

Okay, we have Windows XP Home Edition, on a Dell Dimension 8200. When I did a full system scan yesterday with Norton Antivirus, it detected and deleted a 'suspicious' file. When I started my puter this morning, it said the following:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
\Windows\system32\c_1252.nls

You can attempt to REPAIR this file by starting Windows setup using the ORIGINAL Setup CD-ROM. Select r at the first screen to start repair.

Well, we don't have our set-up cd anymore, who knows what happened to them.

So now I'm stuck, and I hate Norton Antivirus...

Should I just take this thing to Future Shop or something? Is there any WAY to find and load that one file? (I'm now on my Dad's work laptop).youll never see the file again. unless you can access the program...wait, that wouldnt work. take your harddrive to a shop or somthing. they could probably find that file in the quarintined file from norton. but then youd have to get another box to put your hard drive in. oh wellGatika.......Well first of all , I don't think Nortons anti virus is the problem .........unless someone using the dimension 8200 visited some site which infected the PC . In that case the file you are looking for will be (or should be in the quarantine folder ) .

Are you able to boot it up in safe mode ?

Quote

Well, we don't have our set-up cd anymore, who knows what happened to them.

Without any backup restore disks ( which would have come with the PC ) your in big trouble ........you don't just lose that sort of thing .

let us know

dl65  Try the following:

1. Before Windows XP loads, press F8
2. Choose last known good configuration.Thanks for the responses!

Okay, I tried 'last known good config' and safe mode startup, but both of those lead me back to the same error message.

I'm certain it was Norton that deleted the file. When I did a full system scan yesterday, Norton found four 'suspicious' files, but the 'delete failed' for three and succeeded for one (I don't remember it asking me if I wanted them deleted, it just told me that it had). I checked out where the other three undeletable files were (before I turned off my computer yesterday) and they were in the same folder (system32) as the one which is now considered missing or corrupt. So I'm sure it was Norton.

I think we made the mistake of loaning those setup cds to someone several years AGO, and they were never returned. :-/

That's a mistake that'll never be repeated. If I can find someone else that has Windows XP Home Ed and borrow their stuff (and carefully return it), do you think we could recover the file that way? Are their several different versions of Windows XP Home, or just one?Is the drive formatted to NTFS or to FAT32? It could make a difference...C_1252.nls File Missing or CorruptI honestly don't know. How do I check/change how my drive is formatted? What is the difference? Quote
I honestly don't know. How do I check/change how my drive is formatted? What is the difference?

Try using a Windows 98 bootdiskette, if it can read the Hard Disk Drive/partitions it is FAT32. If it can not read them, it is NTFS.Unfortunately, I don't have a Windows 98 boot diskette. :-/

We're gonna see if we can borrow someone's installation cd for XP Home.

Thanks for the help (especially that c_1252 missing or corrupt link, that's rather useful )

This forum is pretty cool. It is now bookmarked. For future modify the setting of Norton.

Under configure section change the "delete file" to quarrantine.Good thinking!You can download a '98 bootdiskette image file from here...

BOOTDISK ARCHIVE

...to a good computer's hard drive, double-click on the image file and put a floppy in the A: drive to make yourself a '98 bootdisk.

Process File: csrss or csrss.exe
Process Name: Microsoft Client/Server Runtime Server Subsystem

Description:
csrss.exe is the main executable for the Microsoft Client/Server Runtime Server Subsystem. This process manages most graphical commands in Windows. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated.

Note: csrss.exe is also process which is registered as the [email protected] worm, the W32.Webus Trojan, Win32.Ladex.a and more. This virus is distributed via the Internet through e-mail and comes in the form of an e-mail message, in the hopes that you open it’s hostile attachment. The worm has it’s own SMTP engine which means it gathers E-mails from your local computer and re-distributes itself. In worst cases this worm can allow attackers to access your computer, stealing passwords and personal data. It is a registered security risk and should be removed immediately. Please see additional details regarding this process
.

You have scanned for Viruses and Trojan Horses? You are using Norton with the latest definitions? Has CRCSS.EXE requested Internet access in the past? Quote
Hi there,

I have a fairly new computer with Windows XP and up until yesterday it was running perfectly but then when I started it up I received the following error message:

"Windows cannot find C:\windows\system32\dnuadum\csrss.exe"

Can someone please give any advice on how to resolve this?

Thanks,

Lisa

I feel the best thing to do is to put your Operating CD and run a repair installation this will not effect your data, or you could put the error message into Google search this sometimes will give the answer. I think the best bet would be to run a repair installation.Yeah, I'm using Norton, and all latest updates of various trojan removal software. I only bought this computer in August and until now, had no problems with it. I had never even heard of CSRSS before then!

Solve : Help. Whats wrong?????

Answer»

I am trying to install a game. I have windows XP and i am inserting the game into the CD Drive and it auto runs then i press the install button on the game screen and a window pops up SAYING " C:\WINDOWS|SYSTEM32|AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and MICROSOFT Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application." It then gives a choice of Close or Ignore. Neither of which do anything to help. Please can someone tell me how to install it. P.S it is compatible for XP!! as it runs on our other XP computer.Right click on the installer and click on properties.

On the compatibility tab use the win 95 or 98 tab.I had the same problem with other programs too. After repairing my Win XP this problem recovered.
That's because of your WInXP you have not installed properly or done some harm after installation.
You need to retrieve a good copy of autoexec.nt from the repair directory and install it in the system32 directory.

From the command line:

copy c:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt c:\windows\system32

OR

You can use Windows Explorer and copy the file from one directory to the other.

OR

You can use the Microsoft METHOD (XP disc needed)

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=324767

Good LUCK. Thanks ever so much sidewinder. Ive managed to get it working by copying the file from the repair folder and pasting it in the system32 folder. Your help is much appriciated!!!!!

Solve : XP background?

While on the internet, a program was downloaded onto my computer that is now covering up my windows background. I have tried everything I can think of to get rid of it, but to no avail. When I right click and click on properties, it lists none. Is there a way to remove this off my computer so my real background shows up again?

Whenever I TRY to delete or check for properties, comes up with nothing. It is as though there is nothing to grab onto. Is there anything in Add-Remove programs which shouldn't be there, or in your msconfig startup?I do not see anything unusual in Add-Remove programs. Not sure what to look for in msconfig startup.You need to use more than ONE program.

Solve : movin operating system to other HD?

Answer»

Hi all,
I have TWO separate HARD drives and would like to MOVE
win 98 se to the other HD.
I can easily back up everything on D to C and format D then Rearange the connectors and change the jumper settings.
My question is once I have installed 98 on the "new C" i will have my other drive with all the files installed as D but 98 will be installed on it also.
How will this effect my COMPUTER?
After the drives are installed and working I plan to then format the "old C" (now D)
I'm just worried that I will get conflics because 98 will be installed on 2 drives (untill I can format the old one)
Any help would be apeciated.
Thanks, DarrylWhat you need to do is create an image using software such as Norton Ghost. You can then create a complete image of your system without the chance of damaging or loosing important files.

Simply copying all the folders will most likely result in a damaged operating system which could be beyond repair.

Why exactly do you want to do this? If you create an image, you only have to set the BIOS to boot from HDD 1 should the new HDD be the slave.I am having trouble and would like to switch hard drives.
My main question is.
If you have a computer with 1 HD with win 98 on it and instal a second HD also with 98 on it what will happen.
Will it boot from the first (master) drive and ignore the OS files on the second HD?
Thanks. DarrylIt should boot from the master and ignore the installation at the slave.It may allow you to choose from what installation you wish to boot. If it does not, it can be easily done by editing the boot.ini.

More INFORMATION regarding the boot.ini can be found here.THANK YOU BOTH VERY MUCHYou are welcome, come back anytime.

You don't need problems from the very start.You may need to enable the Support and help files service in

3. Services.msc

But I would reformat as well if I were you. Unless you allready activated.Have you used Easy CLEANER by any chance?

Solve : Hard Drive Reformatting won't work?

Answer»

After a few weeks of working perfectly, my computer SUDDENLY decided to break down yesterday. At the Windows loading screen (where the windows logo comes out and the little green loading bar comes up) it would just stop and stay at that screen.
After checking online, I finally decided to just reformat the entire thing, so I popped in the Windows CD, GOT NVidia Raid Drivers, deleted the old partition, and tried to reinstall. It said that it needed to reformat my hard drives, so I did.
But, during the formatting, it would go to 100% and then do nothing, even if LEFT on for a few hours. So I turned the computer off, and tried again. This time, the formatting WENT to 58% and would then do nothing. After trying this many times, and flashing the BIOS to the one the motherboard came with, it still wouldn't work.
My specs, if needed, are:
Athlon 64 4000+
Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe
1gig pc3200 RAM
2x 74.5 WD 10000rpm hard drives
Have you tried Western DIGITAL's drive diagnostic diskette on both drives to see if they are OK?

Look for loose wiring in the cabinet and re-seat your RAM modules, cards, etc. before trying again.

Click the link below for more info.I bought my Hard Drives OEM, so I didn't get a diskette. Could I call them and get one or something?You should be able to download one from the WD site.Western Digital Service and Supportoh cool, thanks

Solve : Transferring e-mail info?

Answer»

Hi folks. I recently bought a new Dell computer and would like to TRANSFER into OUTLOOK my e-mails and address book from my old Outlook in the old computer, which runs on Windows 98.

Is there a way to do this automatically without having to manually type everything in?

Thanks.

While I'm on the subject, I have other files I'd like to transfer from the old computer, and wondering if there's a quick and dirty way to do it without having to burn them onto a disc and uploading them into the new computer that way.

Thanks for any help.

Solve : what is index.dat??

Answer»

I've been cleaning up my hardrive and I've noticed files named index.dat are scattered around my computer. They look like their listing every internet site i've been to. Any idea what this is and why it's logging every place I go?Thats the whole point of index.dat. no matter how much you clean your temp folders, there still will be a record of what sites you been to.. If you really dont want anyone to know where you went i say use this TRIAL program called evidence eliminator. Btw I don't think you can delete index.dat. Evidence eliminator will just clean it up and erase itI've just got an idea, anybody know how to make a program run at shutdown (after everythings closed)?You cant run anything on shutdown, shutdown starts exiting everything... What were you THINKING of doin? You can run in DOS.. If thats what you meanWhen I tried to delete a index.dat file it said that another process was using it. Probable IExplorer or something along th elines of that. If you could make a batch file that, on SYSTEM shutdown, deleted the index.dat files, SINCE everythings already closed it should have no problem deleting itFrom what I know you cant erase index.dat yourself you need some special program. Of course they are only trial I do not know any full versions out yet free. Anyways you shouldn't be worry about it unless someone checks you computer everyday HTTP://www.ccleaner.com will delete it on the next reboot.Have a look here http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/windowstips/story/0,24330,3668551,00.html
command prompt

cd\ to get to c:\

then type: del index.dat /s use /s to get all the sub directorieskatdaddy - that won't work 'cos when Windows is running some of the Index.dat files are in use. They are hidden system files so cannot be deleted when Win is running.

I think you can delete it.

Just close all the programs and then via command prompt try it. Quote

Solve : Compressing (?) old files?

How do I prevent Windows disk defragmentation from compressing older files? I have seen Mac post a registry entry which you had to disable, but I can not remember where it was.Will I run into more than one key that way? Could you specificy the path? WDF reports that it is compressing old files. What other application could have done this? The more I run WDF, the more compressed files I find on my computer.I have removed the entry and the computer is still booting. I will see if this causes Windows to stop compressing files.That's strange, my defrag only defrags?
Are you sure you don't mean disk cleanup?
Maybe it's an XP THING, I'll check it out.My XP defrag doesn't compress files either?
Where/how did you find these compressed files?
It's all double dutch to me.Probably file compression on NTFS volumes. (?)WELL, it must have happened somehow. I never USED to defrag and I had no compressed files. Now I defrag my game computer each time data is added or removed and I end up with well over 400MB of compressed files. Which I find and remove by using Windows Disk Cleaner. I only play games on that computer, the only tools I use are WDD and WDC.

I checked on this computer, and it does not find any compressed files. I do not use WDD that often here.

sup? The other day my system stopped functioning properly. When I turned on the system everything would seem to function normally except that the monitor won't show anything. I tried some other monitors but they didn't work. I opened up the system and everything would seem like its functioning normally. I tried my sister's vcard but its the same *censored* thing. It wasn't until I removed the power connectors(molex and so FORTH) from the various devices that I realized the power connector which connects the power supply to the mobo was fried for the most part. Unfortunately it made some burns in the powerslot in the motherboard as well so I'm guessing its USELESS too.

The motherboard that got burned was a Gigabyte k7 Triton 400 GA-7VA. I do have another motherboard but I'm guessing its unfortunate that its not the same one as the one that got burned. The spare one I have is an ASUS A7N8X-X. The system I had was running windows xp pro at the time which brings me to my main concern, recovering the data that was on that 80gig hard drive. I HEARD stories that you can't just use xp on another motherboard. I don't have an xp pro cd, never got one with my system. I do have a windows 98 cd however and I also have a spare hard drive that's 40GB.

Here are more detailed specs on my sys that died the other day.
Mobo: Gigabyte k7 Triton 400 GA-7VA
Chipset: VIA KT400
CPU: Authentic AMD Athlon 1.92Ghz
RAM: 512MB
VidCard: Radeon 9600 Pro
HDD: 80GB
Partitons: About 3
OS: Win XP
Filesystem: NTFS

Spare parts that haven't really been used yet.
Mobo: ASUS A7N8X-X
CPU: AMD Athlon XP 1600+(came connected to the mobo)
HDD: Maxtor 40GB

I already know I need a PS but I need to know how to get my hard drive operational again or at least access the files that was on that hard drive with the other things I currently have. Any help would be appreciated.If the Power Supply Unit nor Motherboard did come with an additional +12V connector (4 pinned) you should consider buying one that does.

If you are into DIY, you may be able to repair the mainboard by replacing the main power connector. I would advise against this, though. Especially if you consider using the same Power Supply Unit. It's probably not all that safe.

Not sure what it looks like, is that the one with two pin slots in two rows and the TOP has a clip? Not too sure what it looks like on the mobo either. Any benefits to this?

No way, that's out of my scope and its sounds difficult. The damaged atx connector on the power supply is probably unsalvageable. It was a 350w powersupply but I plan on getting a 400+w.

Will things still work out if I mount that same xp hdd as a slave if I install Win 98 on that spare hdd(making that one the master) I was talking about earlier? Will I still be able to transfer the files I need in that case? Dusty also mentioned file system compatability which has me extremely worried.

Solve : How 2 FORCE Write Protection off Flash Drive?

Answer»

HI all, I have a U beaute MMC flash based mp3 PLAYER.

The last unit I had had defective earphone jacks, and so I removed the sandisk card, and sent the player back for replacement.

The replacement came back, and when I stuck the card into it, I tried to overwrite / delete the old tracks, and also to copy new tracks onto it.

However, the bloody thing spat back at me "Cannot delete / overwrite / format / etc. because the drive is now write protected.

I have searched through about 120 posts on the subject, and tried everything I can think of, etc., and there are lots of sites saying "remove the write protection" but none of them actually say how to do it....

There is NO clear "turn write protection off" anywhere in XP and there is as far as I can tell, no DOS commands etc., to force the disk to be overwritten / brought back into service.

It seems to be enough of a common problem with thumb drives, cameras and such like to produce many posts, but no clear, concise and working solutions.

Any one who actually knows how to crack the "write-protected" function for a flash drive?

I don't mess with pen drives but...... If the drive is present in MY Computer, right click and select properties. If the read only attribute is checked, uncheck it and "apply". From DOS you should be able to use the attrib command. attrib -r *.* after changing to the drive.EEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (said in a low scottish accented growl)

Ok .... XP, computer management, disk management, properties.

No "read only" attribute in PROPERTIES, only "Share this folder on Network" + "Allow network users to change my files" - both checked.

Jump into "Command Prompt" CD D: attrib -r, a pop up says: "THE DISK CANNOT BE WRITTEN TO BECAUSE IT IS WRITE PROTECTED. PLEASE REMOVE WRITE PROTECTION FROM THE VOLUME IN DRIVE D:." [cancel / try again / continue]

I hit any of the three commands and it comes back in dos:

D:\attrib -r

Unable to change attribute - D:\001 (file name).mp3
Unable to change attribute - D:\002 (file name).mp3
Unable to change attribute - D:\003 (file name).mp3

etc.

So I have tried all this and similar before... and I am honestly STUCK.

It won't format, delete, overwrite, respond to DOS commands.

There may be an issue with the card it's self, it may be a matter of having formatted the card as a FAT32 instead of a FAT filing system (we live and learn???) cause the former MP3 player was playing up and or a whole heap of causes...

But it's a 512M Kingston MMC card, reading as 483 Meg FAT32....

I might have a crack at throwing the card into a camera, or hooking the MP3 player up to a different computer.

No good - same thing in the laptop, might try a friends camera....

Dunno... I shall send the substance of this formum off to Kingston and the MP3 player dealer, and see what they have to say about it.
I think this might be it....

You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders
View products that this article applies to.

Last Review      :      June 2, 2005
Revision      :      5.2
This article was previously published under Q326549
For a Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 98, and Windows 95 version of this article, see 256614 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/256614/EN-US/).
SYMPTOMS
You may experience any of the following symptoms:
• You cannot view or change the Read-only or System attributes of a folder by using the Properties dialog box for the folder. For example, you may experience the following symptoms:
• When you view the General tab of a folder's Properties dialog box, the Read-only check box is not available, and there is no check box to change the System attribute.
• You click to clear or click to select the Read-only check box on the General tab of a folder's Properties dialog box. When you click OK or Apply, you receive the following message:
Confirm Attribute Changes
You have chosen to make the following attribute changes:
unset read-only
Do you want to apply this change to this folder only, or do you want to apply it to all subfolders and files as well?
If you click Apply changes to this folder only, the Read-only attribute is changed for all the files in the folder, but the Read-only attribute is not changed for the folder, its subfolders, or any files in its subfolders. If you click Apply changes to this folder, subfolders, and files, the Read-only attribute is changed for all files in the folder and all files in the subfolders, but the Read-only attribute is not changed for the folder or its subfolders.
• Some programs may display error messages when you try to save files to a folder with the Read-only or System attribute. As a result, these programs may not be able to save files to the folder.
CAUSE
Unlike the Read-only attribute for a file, the Read-only attribute for a folder is typically ignored by Windows, Windows components and accessories, and other programs. For example, you can delete, rename, and change a folder with the Read-only attribute by using Windows Explorer. The Read-only and System attributes is only used by Windows Explorer to determine whether the folder is a special folder, such as a system folder that has its view CUSTOMIZED by Windows (for example, My Documents, Favorites, Fonts, Downloaded Program Files), or a folder that you customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box. As a result, Windows Explorer does not allow you to view or change the Read-only or System attributes of folders. When a folder has the Read-Only attribute set it causes Explorer to request the Desktop.ini of that folder to see if any special folder settings need to be set. It has been seen where if a network share that has a large amount of folders set to Read-only, it can cause Explorer to take longer then what is expected to render the contents of that share while it waits on the retrieval of the Desktop.ini files. The slower the network connectivity to the share the longer this process can take to the point where Explorer may timeout waiting for the data and render nothing or appear to hang.

Note In some previous versions of Windows, you can change the Read-only attribute for folders by using the Properties dialog box for the folder, but no versions of Windows permit you to change the System attribute by using Windows Explorer.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, use the Attrib command at a command prompt (Cmd.exe) to view or remove the Read-only or System attributes of folders. Type attrib /? at the command prompt to view the syntax for the Attrib command.

Warning If you remove the Read-only or System attribute from a folder, it may appear as a ordinary folder and some customizations may be lost. For example, Windows customizes the Fonts folder and provides a special folder view that permits you to hide variations, such as bold and italic. It also permits you to change the folder's view settings in ways that are specific to fonts. If you remove the Read-only and System attributes of the Fonts folder, these customized view settings are not available. For folders that you have customized by using the Customize tab of the folder's Properties dialog box, the folder icon and other other customizations may be lost when you remove the Read-only attribute.

If a program cannot save files to a folder with the Read-only attribute, such as My Documents, change the Read-only attribute to System by using the Attrib command at a command prompt.

For example, to change the Read-only attribute to System for the C:\Test folder, use the following command:
attrib -r +s c:\test
Note that some programs may not operate correctly with folders that have the System attribute set. To remove both the Read-only and System attributes from the C:\Test folder, use the following command:
attrib -r -s c:\test
STATUS
This behavior is by design.
MORE INFORMATION
Windows stores file and folder attributes in the file system with the file and folder name, extension, date and time stamps, and other information. The Read-only check box for folders is not available because it does not apply to the folder. You can use this check box to set the Read-only attribute for files in the folder. However, you cannot use Windows Explorer to determine if a folder has the Read-only and System attributes set. To determine the attributes that are set on a folder, or to change these attributes, you must use the Attrib command from a command prompt.Umm no actually the previous split posting doesn't work cause the constipated flash drive neither accepts nor responds to the attrib command in DOS.... - this might work.

MS Article ID :256614 (read up on it yourself)

SYMPTOMS
You may be unable to remove the Read-Only attribute from a folder using Windows Explorer. In addition, some programs may display error messages when you try to save files to the folder.

NOTE: Some programs do not operate correctly with folders that have the System attribute configured.
1.      Start Registry Editor (Regedit.exe).
2.      Locate the following registry key:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Current Version\Explorer
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, click DWORD Value, and then type the following registry value name:UseSystemForSystemFolders
4. Right-click the new value, and then click Modify.
5. Type 1, and then click OK.
6.      Quit Registry Editor.
7. After you make this change to the registry, you must change the Read-Only attribute for all affected folders by using the attrib command at a command prompt (Command.com or Cmd.exe). Type attrib /? at the command prompt to view the syntax for the attrib command. For example, to change the Read-Only attribute to System for the C:\Test folder, use the following command: attrib -r +s c:\test

[size=10]I need a hug now[/size]Hmm the Microsoft work around - for XP does not address the issue, the work around for 2000 does address the issue - but it doesn't work.

I contacted the teck / support / inquiries people at Sandisk - and they have been suspiciously quiet - and after a couple of emails to them, they have NOT replied.

As generally unscrupulious as MS are in releasing bad (aquired) software, there is some really good stuff they have done and occasionally I have run across some really good support / tech services, to fix up the BUGS in their software, while avoiding getting ripped off in the process (which I usually had to fight for).

So I sent this email to assorted depts in Sandisk and MS:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hi, I have a U beaute MMC based mp3 player. I have a Sandisk 512MB MMC in it and yes the card is unlocked. One of my fathers sent it over from Canada - brand new, in the pack, about 2 months ago.
The last MP3 player I had, had defective earphone jacks, and so I removed the Sandisk card, put that on the shelves and sent the player back for replacement.
The replacement came back, and when I stuck the card into it,  I tried to overwrite / delete the old tracks, and also to copy new tracks onto it.
However, the bloody thing spat back at me "Cannot delete / overwrite / format / etc. because the drive is now write protected.
And I can't find anyone who actually knows how to crack the "write-protected" function for a flash drive? (online or elsewhere).
This is some of the stuff I have done to crack the "write protected" issue.
It won't format, delete, overwrite, cut, paste, or respond to any the XP GUI commands or DOS commands.
There may be an issue with the card it's self, it may be a matter of having formatted the card as a FAT32 instead of a FAT filing system (we live and learn???) cause the former MP3 player was playing up and or a whole heap of causes...
But it's a 512M Kingston MMC card, reading as 483 Meg FAT32....
And I have tried.... XP, computer management, disk management, properties.
No "read only" attribute in PROPERTIES, only "Share this folder on Network" + "Allow network users to change my files" - both checked.
Jump into "Command Prompt"  CD D: attrib -r, a pop up says: "THE DISK CANNOT BE WRITTEN TO BECAUSE IT IS WRITE PROTECTED. PLEASE REMOVE WRITE PROTECTION FROM THE VOLUME IN DRIVE D:." [cancel / try again / continue]
I hit any of the three commands and it comes back in dos:
D:\attrib -r
Unable to change attribute - D:\001 (file name).mp3
Unable to change attribute - D:\002 (file name).mp3
Unable to change attribute - D:\003 (file name).mp3
etc.
So I have tried all this and similar before... in the XP GIU and in XP DOS and I am honestly STUCK.
It player plays just fine tho.....
I had a crack at hooking the MP3 player into a different computer - same problem.
Any ideas on the subject?
Which is quite an interesting thing to say - "Response? what response?"
Slap that mans head for imbecielity...
So I told him so.
Better upload this.... stay Tuned for part 2.
Fell asleep due to boredom............yawn......... Hmmm so much for "stupid" service from Microsoft...
It just really *censored*'s me how "software" decideds to make it's own attributes as "Acrhived" and then set it's self as "READ ONLY" and "write protected".....
And hence "un-deletable", "un-erasable", "un-formatable (/u)" and "un-alterable" in any form......
The attributes can't be altered, no commands in the XP GUI or DOS work...
But there is something in this, that is both thrilling and engaging.
I am going to crack this..... no matter what.
I get the feeling that it's something to do with a) the FORMATTING to fat 32, b) registry settings on protected files and c) a combination of read only and write protected settings and) the way XP defines flash drives or recognises them as hard drives...
Something in that lot holds the key to cracking the "locked up" flash cards issue.
Perhaps I should tell the clowns in Microsoft, that I might go to open source software - Oh wait a minute, I have to just download another 210 security patches and software updates... and yeah the folks at Sandisk?, I might just ask thier competitors at Kingston or some other flash card maker, what crap service the Sandisk people are giving to their customers, in respect to a KNOWN FAULT with FLASH CARDS, and while asking for their help, resolve to only buy the most helpful companies flash cards in the future.
Yeah, be a winner, get rid of the losers.......
I shall ask around for some more expert help, and when it and or an illumination comes, or I have more time to reseach it, I shall post it here.
Mean, as a pussywhipped *censored* - while I have housework to do.....
