Solve : Erase your data in Windows Vista.?

Answer»

Warning: full format will erase your data in Windows Vista.
Have you seen that message? Is it really true? If so, then thou would have little need for DBAN and similar tools.
Quote

The warning "full format will erase your data in Windows Vista" came from the instructions in Microsoft site. Majority of users don't often bother to read the volumes of information and assume that they will be able to recover their data after do a full format under Vista as USED to do with the previous versions of Windows.

However, now, we have to remind you that the data will be erased if the full format has been performed in Windows Vista. Due to the enhanced security features of Windows Vista, when a full format is run, it writes 0's to every sector of the disk. It means that the original data any more if the original data is completely rewritten by the 0's by Vista. ...

If this is true, then Vista full format of a hard drive would also reset the built-in bad sector remapping built into all modem drives. And nit would explain why Windows XP does not really 'fix' a drive by doing a full format.
Any comments?

What?
Since when did a format not erase data? Are they talking about using special tools to recover data from a formatted drive?

a format has never erased data. Conventionally it's only deleted the file system structures so that Operating systems don't the data. utilities can still be used to rebuild the partition table and recover data, assuming too much of the data hasn't been overwritten.

Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 31, 2011, 08:49:20 PM
I had no idea. Why would they do this?

Several reasons.

First, in order to ask why they do it differently, it might be a good idea to ask why it was done the original way to begin with.

Disk I/O has always been slow. But with early file systems, if you could speed up any operation- you did. In the case of DOS, for example, deleting a file from the FAT system didn't delete the file- it renamed it. I'm serious. All it did was change the first character of the filename (this is why DOS undelete utilities require you to enter the first letter when they recover the file), and mark the clusters the file was using as free. Why? Because it was faster. A rename takes exponentially less time than actually removing the file information from disk.

Now, though, computers are a lot faster and so are their hard disks. In the case of a format, they also probably found that writing zeros to every part of the disk for conventional magnetic disks was more likely to expose defects in material and workmanship in the drives earlier, rather than later (later of course being after the drive has important data stored on it). This of course has always been true, but with a older hard drive the operation could take a entire day rather then the less than an hour it takes now. Okay.

With XP, a full format would run CHKDSK and then format the drive. Would this not expose defects? Is writing zeros to the drive better for exposing defects? Quote from: JJ 3000 on May 31, 2011, 09:29:39 PM

chkdsk doesn't read or write to every portion of the drive, which exposes defects that the hard drive will remap.

This isn't a huge issue  since when those sectors are written to for the first time the drive would do the remapping then, but it gives a better overall picture for S.M.A.R.T status after the format.

chkdsk, with the plausible exception of running it with /R or /B switches, pretty much only works at the File-System level. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 31, 2011, 08:37:48 PM

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941961
Let me get back to you. Somewhere I read that on doing  a write sector, not a read, would cause the drive firmware to fix a sector that had been marked bad from a prior troubled read operation. This is transparent to the OS. The drive just acts a little slow in formatting some areas. The write operation is given to a previous hidden sector renamed with the address of the current bad sector. This is not software control. It is firmware control. The exact algorithm is proprietary. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 31, 2011, 09:32:17 PM

I see. Thank you.

This article, which explains the difference between quick and full format in XP , says if you choose the quick option you can still scan the drive with chkdsk /r. I would assume that that implies the full format runs chkdsk with the /r switch, but who KNOWS with MS...

Solve : Google Contacts?

Answer»

Hi, I have a Gmail account with all my contacts in it. I WORK in an environment where I need these contacts but I have no internet. Is there any way (even 3rd party) to have these contacts available to me offline?

If there isn't, could someone recommend a contact manger that is just as good or better than Google Contacts? I would ALSO want it to work on a SMARTPHONE OS (like Blackberry or Android).
I think you can try and use Orkut or facebook account to have access to these accountsFacebook sharing of GMail contacts was shut down by Google yesterday some time....You could always try saving a copy of your page onto your computer, and UPDATING it when you have the chance to be online. I don't understand. If you have an Android PHONE it will automatically sync your gmail contacts.

It sounds LIKE a news feed tab, that you must have activated !

It will display all of the latest news headlines as they occur, can't you just close the tab ?? Thanks for the reply if you go on live mail under inbox at the bottem  you will see mail  -calendar -contacts -Feeds. not sure how i can get rid it.
is it not part of windows programme.just been on this morning there are 27 NEW ones. That a RSS News feed, it will show you all the most RECENT headlines.

You can manage your feeds if you click on Windows Live Mail (To the left of the Home tab) / Options / Feeds / Manage

OR even simpler, don't click on it. Its only doing its job.

Solve : I lost my files on my USB due to them losing their format somehow...?

Answer»

Hello all,

My DRIVING instructor recently tried to add some files onto my USB stick but it got corrupted somehow, I'm not sure how. I managed to recover the data but then WORD had an error message saying, " Word experienced an error trying to open this file. Try these suggestions . * Check the file permissions for the file or drive. * Make sure there is sufficient free memory and disk space. * Open the file with a text recovery converter". So I then downloaded a program called, 'Advanced Word Repair'. This program ALLOWED me to recover of the data from my Word documents but it was in a different font, font size, the pictures weren't there and had various other THINGS wrong with it. On most of the word documents it has a BUNCH of symbols amongst my work (††††). Can anyone please tell me if there is a better program I can download or whether it's possible at all for my work to have the same font, size, pictures and layout etc.

Thank you! Sam.

To repeat from my errors, I will do a nice PIECE on Uruguay on my blog. When I get around to it. We went to Argentina once, but not to Uruguay. We got lost.

Getting back to the thread. Copyright laws may vary from one sovereign state to another. This is not to say that such outright contradict each mother. They differ, but mean the same thing.  The International Copyright agreement, which was nursed to life in Uruguay, is one of the few times several nations could finally agree over a long standing disagreement.

In short, Copyright Law is international in scope. No nation can impose arbitrary limits on your right to own your intellectual material. At least you two got the important stuff posted correctly!    Quote

Anybody want a job in Russia? Not just Russia, my friend.  I've worked at two different places where signing contracts with them said they owned any developed intellectual property.  One even went so far as to STIPULATE that they owned anything developed by me, independently...even if it wasn't related.  Since the only thing I'm likely to develop is a headache, it was no problem for me to SIGN.  Corporations can be just the same.Actually, that's pretty common in the US , and probably most other countries.  If you work for a corporation, DEPENDING on your contract and legal obligations with the corporation, any copyrights and patents belong to the corporation, based on the fact that they are paying you to create stuff.  Some companies have incentives like profit sharing to encourage innovation, and some don't.

Solve : BSOD sound loop: why??

Answer»

It's not actually a problem, more like my curiosity at work...

In its three-year-life, my computer has faced a fair number of BSODs. The reasons have been various; from corrupted memory sticks to a falsely processed Direct-X command.
What has always puzzled me, however, is the rarity of an instant, microsecond-long shutdown. Usually, be it a mouse, internet or video driver, as well as memory problems, the OS failure is easy to tell from a strange, not too pleasant sound, which lasts for approximately 3 seconds and continues on after the BLUE screen appearance. Suppose, the computer needs time to create a minidump; yet it’s this sound loop that worries and intrigues me.
Whenever some sound is present, e.g. an audio file is playing, and a BSOD occurs (thankfully, quite rarely), the sound gets stuck in some kind of loop, like some type of noise at different frequencies. It’s really not nice to suddenly hear it on a high volume level. (The settings allow me to watch the blue screens however long I like, and all the time this sound loop is present).

So, I’ve been wondering: what exactly causes this to happen? Say, the OS stops RESPONDING, it shuts down, everything freezes - but why have all the programs including the drivers not shut down altogether? Like, why doesn’t the sound simply disappear, the BSOD doesn’t have anything to do with the sound card anyway?
Is it the latest audio-driver command still being processed after the OS-shutdown as no stop-command from the driver has been issued? Do those driver-instructions go to the processor via the OS?
This might seem a weird or silly question, but I’d really like to UNDERSTAND the workings of my hardware  This may not be how it actually works, but it's how I understand it.

The drivers do stop- everything does.

Naturally, though- the hardware doesn't.

A sound card, in simple terms, outputs digital audio. Of course, that audio data needs to come from somewhere, whether it is system memory, or on the card itself. Basically, the sound card has a tiny area of memory that it keeps outputting- a buffer, if you will.

The sound driver is responsible for filling this buffer with the appropriate sound data. when the machine encounters a STOP error, all the drivers are shut down, which MEANS that the sound driver is no longer updating that area of memory, or anything related to the sound output (it being shut down and all). the sound card however- as I noted, is a piece of hardware and can't be "stopped"; it will continue to do what it was told to do by the driver, which in this case is playing sound from the prescribed buffer.

-the buffer never changes, so you get a constant loop of whatever is in the buffer at the time
-the driver never tells the sound card to stop, so it keeps going indefinitely.

also Driver instructions don't deal with the CPU (they are run the system CPU, but that's LARGELY irrelevant); they go to the hardware to "drive" them- thus the name. That's very interesting, thank you!

Solve : third-party??

Answer»

what is third-party
I see the expression : third-party cookies - third-party sites ....
i use google , I saw a lot of information , not concentrated
any hlp
First party: Original Manufacturer/developer
Second party: not original, but affiliated with the first party
Third Party: unrelated to the first party

For example, in the CASE of Windows, First Party would be Microsoft. Second party would be a company that MS CONTRACTED out, or LICENSED SOFTWARE from; for example, in the context of XP and later Executive software can be considered second party because they wrote the disk defragmenter that Microsoft uses.

Third Party is pretty much everything else.

This applies to any number of other things; for example, if a game or program supports "mods" or "plugins" and the creator creates some plugins, their plugins would be "first-party" and so on.Thank you BC_Programmer
It is clear  BC_Programmer's explanation is very INFORMATIVE. I didn't know what is second party until I saw your explanation. Thanks for the reply.

............compared to.........what!

All DVD packaging has WARNINGS.....do not get wet, do not leave in the sun, do not exceed X degrees C etc etc.

My personal experience is that Cd's and DVDs are generally damaged from improper handling, and sometimes even from careful handling.  Being locked in a box shouldn't matter at all, and if ANYTHING it should help protect them.

Solve : Switching Mode Power Adapter - What is it??

Answer»

The power adapter for my Polaroid Picture Frame failed. I thought it was a simple AC-DC
120 to 5 volt adapter, but reading the data says it's a Switching Mode Power Adapter,
120 vac to 5 vdc, 2.5 AMPS. That's a lot of amps. Can I  substitute ANY 5 vdc adapter that will handel 2.5 A or is there something different about a switching mode adapter?

I realize it's not a computer question but it's close and you are the only people I know to ask. Thanks. DixieflashNo. The power adapter you need is used for digital electronic devices that require well filtered and very steady constant voltage.
Few 'linear' power adapters do that. And not at 2.5 amps.

You can buy cheap switching adapters that will come close. But you have to be careful. Here is one the I know is a real switching power supply. It do supply 5 VOLTS for a D-link router, which sucks amps.

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B002FA5WE2/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&seller=Thanks for your help. DixieflashBe sure to verify the polarity and voltage before you plug it i. Use a ten ohm resistor for a load. Or a 6 volt  light bulb. Voltage may not read OK with no load. Thanks, again, for that tip. Just what is the meaning of "Switching Mode" ?
Always trying to learn. DixieflashEarly PERSONAL computer designs use the PSU called a linear power supply. A hefty transformer would convert either to 120 or 240 AC power down to 5  and 12 colts. Actually, slightly higher voltages were produced when it was passed through a full-way rectifier and went into huge capacitors. But to get to the point, the power supply itself was not capable of supplying very stable power o the digital circuitry. So each circuit card in the computer had been at one or two linear regulators to produce the exact 5 V or 12 V  needed in the system. It was very wasteful and very bulky and read was an obstacle in the design of personal computers.
Apple Computer Co. broke the ice for the industry and they produced a small computer that had a switching power supply and the whole thing was very COMPACT and could easily fit on your desktop and not take up a lot of space. It was called the Apple II. Some sources say the Apple II was the first personal computer to use a switching power supply. That is why the computer was so compact and give off very little heat.
As to what the word 'switching' means , it basically means that the power supply does not run at the 50 or 60 Hz line frequency. Instead a switching circuit breaks it up with her pulses at a much higher rate something like 25,000 Hz. At the higher FREQUENCIES transformer cores can be made much smaller and much more efficient. A 75 watt high-frequency core can fit in the palm of your hand. For more information about how switching power supplies work, let me refer you to an article that is helpful.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Switched-mode_power_supply
Small linear power supplies are still used for applications that allow for POOR regulation and limited current. These typically are called wall warts, a reference to those of transformers that plug into a wall socket. They are suitable for such things as toys and boom boxes other gadgets that do not require high quality low voltage.
Wow - I really learned something there. Thanks, again, for playing teacher. DF

Solve : DESPERATELY NEED HELP ASAP!?

Answer»

Hi all...

I am new to the site and could not find a forum specific for troubleshooting so thought I would place it under the respective OS that the problem is occurring under. I don't think it is OS related so if any mods feel it more appropriate in a different one, by all means please move it for me!

This is actually for a customer for the company I work for (which we will end up refunding but still want to resolve - so there is no personal gain other than to hopefully get rid of this headache I am getting!)

....Started off with good intentions to get a system running a little nicer and have had some adverse effects that have stumped me so here I am!...I have searched this and many other forums so far with no success so crossing my fingers here!

I would say I will try and keep it short but there is a lot of info I want to put down to help save obvious questions being asked and answered. To start the system in question is a HP Pavillion desktop 6??? series, running Vista x64. Ask if you need anything else.
The main issue is that the system will no longer get on the internet by itself. What I mean by that is, if I uninstall and reinstall the network adapter from Device Manager, it lets me get online, but as soon as I restart the computer it loses that ability. It is connected through a switch and a wireless bridge to a other wireless router. It shows a local connection to the network, which was set to public, but have tried changing to private, just in case, no change. Anyway, all of these components have been power cycled to ensure they are not part of the issue even though all other computers hooked up to that set up are not having any connectivity issues.

To give some background:

I was basically cleaning the system out - Ran Norton System works which cleans out temp files, fixes registry issues, CHKDSK, defrag etc. etc. I also downloaded updates for some Logitech webcam software, Kodak easyshare, windows updates, including Vista SP2. I replaced Adobe reader with Firefox, disabled Norton 360's backup feature. I also ran MSCONFIG to remove any unnecessary startup programs. Just typical maintenance.
Everything in general went fine. When they stopped by to pick it up, they had brought their webcam with them as they had said that the people they were video conferencing could not hear them so assumed that the audio in Skype needed configuring and so went to load it and could not connect to the net and thats when the problem started.
Despite all the changes I made, everything was still working fine with it when I had finished working on it, this is what is so baffling.

Anyway, this is what I have tried so far:

Uninstalled the driver for the Realtek RTl8169/8111 network card that had been updated via windows update. restarted no difference (I restart after every change mentioned)...I then tried downloading the original driver from HP's website. Nothing. I even tried downloading the latest one directly from Realtek. Still no joy.

Safe mode with networking makes no difference, which pretty much ruled out 3rd party conflicts in my mind, but just to be safe, I tried disabling the Norton firewall/AV and even uninstalled it completely with the removal tool for good measure as I have seen that cause problems like this before but not the culprit this time.

I've tried resetting/defaulting/reinstalling TCP/IP protocols, WINSOCK, DHCP,DNS, etc and tried a bunch of different MS fix it tools for these typed of issues. Disabled NIC's power save mode, tried using google's DNS just in case, none of this made any difference.

I ran a malware check just in case with Malwarebytes and Hitman Pro, no trace of anything.

I ran a Windows File Protection (SFC) scan, which apparently detected some errors but was unable to fix them - didn't even prompt me for the OS disc...go figure!

One interesting thing was that even when I uninstall and reinstall to get temporary connectivity i can browse online just fine but I still cannot ping any sites. So seems like a low level issue of some sort??

I do not know all of the necessary windows services that are required for getting online, but checked some of the previously mentioned, DNS and DHCP to ensure they and their dependencies were started/auto starting on boot and they are/were. However ipconfig reports that DHCP is disabled...so that might be something right there.

When this sort of thing happens, I like to try and fix the issue but if it is can't be resolved with all the typical above approaches, then despite all the time spent on making all these changes, I would resort to System Restore to a day before I started. However, in this case, it seems to have lost everything it had (I know it was enabled and working as I checked before I started and actually made a restore point) - I know I didn't purge any folders like that, so wonder if I can find any of those whether that will save me some hassle.

I know ultimately, the common sense thing to do is to go back and uninstall each of the updates one at a time, even though the computer was working fine even after finishing them all, but I would hate to UNDO everything unless completely necessary, just as I am trying to avoid a factory recovery as there is a fair bit of data and programs on there.
The way I see it is there has to be a simple reason or setting that has caused this, I just don't have a freaking clue what to try next. I am desperate and need to try and get this resolved by tomorrow noon:(

If you read this post all the way through than I applaud you and not to sound demanding but you you are kind enough to reply, please, please only put something specific, such as a setting to change or what might be triggering the adapter to reset after reboot etc. etc. Vs you should just format!!, etc., etc.

Thank you all so much! Quote

It may possibly come from these... If you have a Norton antivirus Software Installer, Remove or Uninstall Norton and remnants and install a free antivirus(Avira, Avast). If you ran into much deeper problem and you are in for a deadline, I would start backing up files and do a complete reformat of the system and save the troubleshooting troubles. No registry back up as I made a system restore point before I started, but apparently that is not enough as they system restore points dissapeared. IPCONFIG from the cmd line shows a local ip address as it should but still cannot get out on to the net. It reports that DHCP is not enabled there but under the services console it is reported as running and on automatic startup, so some conflict there and not sure which is correct. I have verified all my SETTINGS are auto (dhcp, dns etc. for IP4 and IP6)

Any other ideas guys? Also yes I did revert back to normal startup in MSCONFIG and it didn't make any difference. Why shouldn't it be used to prevent unneccessary programs and services from starting up? I've used it for years with very good results. Yes you can do it from the main services console or adjust each individual programs startup settings but MSCONFIG is a lot more convenient. I only change what I know and if something doesn't work right then I change it back.

Also there were no issues like this on the system before I started cleaning up. Quote from: hrhrudi on January 09, 2011, 09:19:22 AM

I think you've found the problem.MSCONFIG can be used for troubleshooting of course, but it had CONFIG in the name because it is a system configuraton tool as well.

Cleaning the computer with the tools that I have used several hundred times on different computers with very little adverse effect was unlikely the cause of this issue considering the process I have to now go through to get it online. Also considering that everything was working perfectly fine after I had finished that aspect further confirms my doubt. If you still believe that was it, then please specify from all the actions I mentioned what you think caused the problem, how it caused it, etc. etc. Vs just a general remark without any type of suggestion on how to fix it. I do appreciate any responses, but legitimate, non- condescending/patronizing ones are prefered. I have been doing tech work for a little while now, so am really looking for more in-depth, experienced, specific solutions if possible. Thanks

Thanks Jason for the response...there was not anything specifically wrong with the computer as far as the system OS or normal functionality. The tune up is just something we recommend about every six months to clean up clutter, check for viruses etc. The customer had requested we change some software over and make a few program changes and as a standard thing I run missing updates to hopefully try and improve security and compatibility, that's all. Everything was fine, including net connectivity after the changes I made, the updates and the cleaning. It literally sat there for a few HOURS awaiting customer pick up and when I came back to it with the webcam when they were picking it up, the problem was just there out of the blue. I uninstalled the last few updates that were done before the last restart to see if that's what caused it but no joy. Not sure what you mean by have I tried logging in and out to confirm the problem?...do you mean logging in/out of windows? and what are you trying to verify with that?
I didn't check WZC as its a wired connection and the NIC itself shows itself fine in device manager on startup.

Any further thoughts?...Thanks again! Quote from: reddevilggg on January 10, 2011, 05:55:59 AM

I honestly feel that some people respond back to posts just to argue technicalities as if they know better about everything and just to tell the people posting that if they had done this that and the other than they wouldn't be in that situation rather than trying to actually help. I don't know if that is because they don't really know anything, or that they are bored or what, but you know what they say to do if you don't have anything good to say...

As far as your quote from Webopedia, if you are going to do that sort of thing, then you might want to include the next sentence from the paragraph which clearly confirms the other main and common use for MSCONFIG...

"MSCONFIG

Built into Windows 98, 98SE, ME, and XP, MSCONFIG or  the  Microsoft System Configuration Utility is a tool designed to help you troubleshoot problems with your computer. MSCONFIG  allows you to edit your start-up applications and provides access to the SYSTEM.INI, WIN.INI, amd BOOT.INI files. " - Webopedia

As far as the registry, again, I did not back it up because I create a restore point before servicing anything and if you are familiar with that process you know that it backs up the registry and even more of the system state. Just backing up the registry itself is not sufficient in going back to a previous day if your system fails to start after the changes made, whereas, a system restore would be no problem. So I wasn't and am never submissive about the possible consequence of changing attributes on a box. This is the first time ever that I have had system restore points just go missing altogether without having turned off system restore or purged the folder that they are kept in. Quote
Not sure what you mean by have I tried logging in and out to confirm the problem?...do you mean logging in/out of windows? and what are you trying to verify with that?
Logging in or out of Skype and reconnecting the call to make sure it was either just a bad connection. Or checking it let's say YM for the same call.

So I assume you have check Audio output for the machine is running fine and basically just the Skype call was the problem here and there was already an internet connection. And so you run to configure Skype and just lost connection? Have you check for other configurations going from wireless router to wireless bridge access point to the computer or any IP address conflict?

Solve : How can I know how much data I use a month on my ISP??

Answer»

I LIKE to know how I can tell how much data i send and RECEIVE a month on my ISP? My friend was told if he goes over xxx amount of data a month He is charged extra. So how can I tell EXACTLY or in the ballpark figure about how much data I USE a month I do have DSL. I view videos, play on-line games also. You really need to ASK your service provider.
IMHO if you pay more the $25 a month it should not have any limit.

Solve : Apple took away my iPhone!! Outrage >:(?

Answer»

Ah, Oh my god NOOOO!!!!

Apple took away my iPhone from any access during install of iTunes!

Luckily I had it plugged in to charge, otherwise I wouldn't notice it now and later I would've thought a package I installed disabled USB File Access, it seems when Installing what happened was, I went back into the 'Computer' menu after the iPhone whined, (It made the beep it was plugged in and charging, even though it was already plugged), and Guess what? my Apple iPhone was gone!!!

What kind of company re-routes your PC's registry so their own software is only accessible via their own software?

I've tried PhoneViewer Demo recently on my Mac machine, (crummy iTunes, still on there) and luckily it... worked!!!
I was able to browse the whole file system, too! :d

Only though now on my Windows PC it's going to be heck-in-a-basket to try to access my Photos, videos, etc from my iPhone... anyone know of a solution?  This is just sad... really it is...

I've ALSO (for the own heck of it, in desperate attempt to bypass crummy crApple); installed this new excellent tool called 'iPhone Explorer' for Windows, works like a charm, seemingly more access than before, though I know a friend who uses a PC also, and another advanced program, looked to me the same program he used for FTP'ing, so he must've FTP'd into his (also) jailbroken iPhone, meh, FTP isn't my kind of thing...

Anyways, it's sad to see a company could do such a thing like this, it almost seems like a delicious CONSPIRACY, anyone agree?

Also, alas upon opening iTunes, guess what? I seem to be very unlucky as my iPhone isn't showing... at all... Nothing from it.  -And I just downloaded the latest version of iTunes, and it's asking me to update-update what? Right...

sigh...  Please don't delete this thread, it isn't spam really I'm asking for HELP here....please? Please move this to software or somewhere else, just noticed this is the wrong section.

what? the only reason you need a certain program is because despite the clear fact that it could, the iPod/iPhone/iWhatever's don't act like a standard USB class driver-able device, like say, a sane MP3 player or phone might- nope, they are basically just a "device" that can only be communicated with using a proprietary protocol which has been reverse-engineered by a few applications (Winamp has plugins  that do so).

Solve : reporting spammers?

Answer»

is there any WAY or any where you can report and stop spammers when you have their ip addressDon't know your country of residence but Canada has just passed legislation to make spamming (under most conditions ) an illegal act subject to penalties. However it must be stated that they ALSO have a "do not call" act that has created a bureaucracy and a process for allegedly  preventing that activity to specified phone numbers. My understanding of that process has been largely infective and in many instances appears to have increased the amount of unwanted phone solicitations to those that subscribed to the list. Therefore don't hold your breath for an effective anti Spam program. As well the FACT that you believe you have the actual IP address may NOT be so as many spammers use methods to DISGUISE the point of origin of their missals and what you have may be the IP of an innocent address. truenorth ok thank you for your INFORMATION , i also found out that the spammers pay a company to GENERATE spam for them so if i could/did report them it might harm innocent ip address holders some how

Solve : iPod touch water damage?

Answer»

Hello to all. I have a bit of trouble.

I have an ipod touch, 2nd gen,  it had a few problems to begin with.
1 it had a crack in the upper richt corner of the scteen. It workes, so i was not concerned.
2. It had a sleep button with problems, that it would never turn off. It automatically went to sleep, but not off completely.

so water got spilled, at least 4 oz. and i couldent turn the thing of, but it was working for a good two hours after the spill so my concern was fading.

but after leaving it for a few hours, it dosent work.

currently sitting face down on a counter
Any suggestionsThe prognosis is not promising. But at this stage what have you got to lose right? Do not try to power it up again until you have really made a thorough effort to dry it out. Remove all covers that you can. Remove all components that you can IE battery/memory sticks and whatever else you can easily get out. Using a hair drier on low heat pass air over ever part of the computer you can. Stopping after every few minutes to ensure not overheating. Don't hold the hair drier too CLOSE. Repeat often for at least 1/2 an hour. Leave it in a dry place for a day or 2 . Then cross your fingers and ask a big favour from your preferred deity. Plug it in and try it. Also ensure you dried all the parts you removed. Good luck, truenorth One problem Truenorth; you cannot open up the iPod Touch.

Just let it be for a few days. My brother managed to put his iPhone in the washing machine one time. He left it in his drawer for a week thinking it was dead. Just before he went out to buy a new phone, he plugged it in and to his amazement, and my amazement, it was fully functional.I've heard that rice can help dry out electronics. Stick it in a bowl of uncooked rice for a day. Thanks CC for that info. As is evident i don't have one of those devices. I was really trying to emphasize the importance of taking the time to dry it out before trying to power it up. Yes rice can absorb moisture also silica gel. truenorthI had a similar problem. my device took water, worked for two hours and stopped. the problem was that I found out about the water too late. I dried it out for a few days but it never STARTED again. I hope your's is going to be OKIt already had so many problems, Mabey getting it replaced is not a very bad idea

But i loved that cracked screen

so yeah Quote from: JJ 3000 on DECEMBER 30, 2010, 10:21:57 PM

I've heard that rice can help dry out electronics. Stick it in a bowl of uncooked rice for a day.

I've actually done this before and it worked.  The thing I avoided was trying to turn it on initially for fear of short circuiting something.  After about a week in the rice, it worked fine and never even realized there was a problem.I hear that there is a sensor in the earphone jack, And i am thinking if i replace it, the sensor would then be replaced.
The sensor is set off by water and turns red.

Would i be right

BTW it is way PAST the point of waranty, and I have it tacken apart now. It's just a utility that tells Apple Personnel that the iPod was dunked in Water. It will not affect device performance.i just read about useing uncooked rice you can try that it will take a little time, just place in bowl and COVER in rice and let sit, the rice pulls the water out

Solve : manufacturers liability?

my friend purchased a toshiba laptop 13 months ago,it has now failed one MONTH outside its WARRANTY,she took it to pc world from where it was purchased they inspected it and determined that the motherboard was u/s and the cost of REPAIR would be over £200.my question is surely toshiba should take some responsibilty for the cost after all motherboardsshould last a lot longer than 13 months what do the readers think.

If they did take responsibility then warrantys would be 2yrs and not 1yr.

It is what it is.

Maybe your friend should of considered 'extended warrenty'  I see that corkball is using UK pounds as his or her local currency. In the European Union, (including Britain), even after the manufacturer's warranty has run out, you are still protected by EU statutory rights which can run for up to 6 years after purchase.  For example if a fault developed in the warranty period or was there from new but which only showed itself after the warranty expired. Best to go to your local Trading Standards dept and/or check out the government Consumer Direct site.

This is a good British magazine, especially for beginners. It has a consumer rights SECTION, which is the page i've pasted to.

http://www.computeractive.co.uk/consumer-rightsIn addition to possible options available beyond the manufacturer's warranty. There is often an "extended" warranty provided when the purchase was made via a credit card. You might want to look into that possibility--it usually doubles the mfg. warranty up to 3 years. For this reason i always make my substantial purchases using a credit card. I have exercised the option and never had a problem. Beats paying for an extended warranty.

Solve : Laptop specifications?

Answer»

Does anyone have an easy or good way of getting the technical information for laptops? A lot of people ask me to pick out a good laptop for them but 90% of the time I FIND incomplete information on website's descriptions and manufacturers generally only list their latest and greatest.

[Sorry if this is in the wrong place but I didn't think that this quite fitted under the hardware topic so I stuck it here]If you are trying to establish a criteria to fit a person's intended use and other factors ie: budget then you can seek "reviews" that  relate broadly to the defined criteria. Once that presents you with some (but certainly not all) the listed computers that fall into that category then you can REFINE your research to those models and through a combination of manufacturers , sellers and users you should be able to find all of the technical specifications you would want/need. If it turns out to be a recent model then the manufacturer should bend over backwards to provide you with any additional information (if any) on their product as it may lead to a sale (which would be uppermost in their motivation to assist you).If it is an older model then it would depend on whether they are still trying to market it or not. Actually your QUESTION is so broad in nature it is hard to imagine who you would be advising that would need more information than could normally be found via the methods i have already mentioned.truenorthY'know, whenever I POST something like this here I swear the internet corrects itself. Look at the taskbar in 7, is it me or is that an awful, awful step back?
It is a step back, but not as bad as you make it out to be. It was a small mistake that M$ made while trying to play keep-up with Apple. A link for those who want to start bashing Win 7: http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-7-Sins-Bad-Vista-6-1-120095.shtml

Personally, I think Windows 7 is okay. It'll never get me away from Ubuntu Linux, but it is a fine system (a lot better than Vista) for general use besides it's new inferior taskbar.I think anyone who hates/dislikes any OS is going to do so regardless of taste. common sense and/or functionality......Ubuntu is to Linux what a Plush bear is to a grizzly. An overtly optimistic rendition of something that should be dealt with carefully.

It is a step back, but not as bad as you make it out to be. It was a small mistake that M$ made while trying to play keep-up with Apple.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2008/11/20/happy-anniversary-windows-on-the-evolution-of-the-taskbar.aspx

First off, note a specific quote in that blog entry, it's the caption for an image of the new taskbar:

Quote
Fig 2. The Windows 7 taskbar: Default settings include large icons, no text and glass surface

Now, for those who don't like this new taskbar and think it's a step back, allow me to highlight some keywords:

Quote
Fig 2. The Windows 7 taskbar: Default settings include large icons, no text and glass surface

That's right. Default settings. It's not a forced change. Personally, I prefer both small icons and title bar captions, not to mention a little bit more vertical space. So I did the unthinkable.

I changed the default options.

I know. Who does this? Apparently not people who like to complain about the defaults, that's for sure. Because despite them saying they want windows to be more customizable and the fact that they can easily change or revert options to suite their needs using that customizability they instead prefer to complain about it.

And then of course the Linux zealots will jump at any chance to use their "cool" words like "M$" and "Microshaft" all the while having absolutely no idea what they are talking about and running a toy Linux OS that is clearly trying to emulate windows, despite Linux Zealots constant proclamations of "LOL MICROSHAFT IS JUS COPYIN APPEL!!ELEVENTY".

First off, I'd like to state my "view" here. Nobody is COPYING anybody. That statement is the biggest load of crap I ever heard. Microsoft is not "lifting" actual code from Apple, nor did apple lift Actual code from the SPARC (or did they? damned if I remember, I don't think so)

The funny part is that the people debating who copied who and what they copied have no idea how bloody ridiculous they sound. It would be like people who use top loading and front loading washing machines arguing about who created the first front loader and saying that Company B copied Company A's "idea" to have a top loading machine, all the while sticking by their personal favourite (neither of which has any clear superiorities) and defending it tooth and nail, and even having arguments amongst themselves over the best detergent to pair with top and front loaders and also threatening violence against their mothers if they don't agree on which agitator works best on port stains.

And of course, we can see the obvious. It's a god damned washing machine, right? a Tool for washing clothes. It doesn't matter. But the analogy does. That's exactly what is happening when people argue incessantly about Operating Systems, Programming languages, and even argue amongst their BLOODY SELVES over which specific implementation of a Graphical environment is the best (this is of course more constrained to Linux, where you get to choose between KDE or GNOME, both of which blow goats since XFCE is clearly superior*, people will even argue about memory allocation and bloody Language semantics. It's not because they truly believe that X is better then Y, but because they would benefit if X was better then Y.

As far as programming language debates are concerned, most people will argue that programming language A is better then B. what MAKES this interesting is that almost entirely the people arguing for Language A use it and the people arguing about Language B also use it. Therefore they aren't really arguing over which language is better, but they are locking horns to try to say who is smarter, since clearly if they can determine which language is "better" they will know which side was more intelligent in their choices. The same goes for Operating Systems. Windows users will defend windows because it's what they know, and Linux zealots saying "anybody who uses windows is a moron" don't exactly make them want to embrace Linux. That was in fact where I used this quote:

Quote
whenever you APPROACH a topic with the attitude that everyone you're addressing is a moron whose current opinion doesn't matter, you lose. It doesn't matter if everyone you're addressing *is* a moron. Very few people can keep an open mind about a topic after you've insulted them.

And it was this very specific type of bullcrap that this was listed against. Just because a person uses Windows doesn't make them a moron, for one thing, and second, calling them a moron is hardly a good way of converting them. Saying "your a moron unless you use X" just demonstrates that you have no better argument. I've also seen more then one conversation go something like this:
Quote
A:I want to use OS A, but will I be able to do Y and Z like I can do with OS B?
B:Yes, you will. in fact OS A does Y a lot better then OS B.
A:But what about Z? Can I still do Z?
B:Well, it's won't be as easy, but it also let's you do Q, Y and T a lot easier too.
A: But I don't care about Q Y and T. I've never even heard of Q and Y. I just want to do Y and Z.
B: Then stick with your O$ B, moron. Nobody should need Z. Anybody who does is stupid.

Now tell me, what the *censored* is this? A asks a few QUESTIONS about OS A and wants straight answers, B is acting like a god damned salesman here. He's not trying to SELL OS A, he should be giving factual information about the applicability of OS B in A's situation. If it can't do Z, then tell them. Calling them a moron because they need a feature of another OS and then saying that that feature is stupid and nobody needs it who isn't stupid either. Because, you know, calling people stupid is a sure way to get new recruits. "OH! thank you so much kind arrogant stranger for informing me of my deficiency in IQ, I shall now do your bidding" is hardly going to be the RESPONSE. A and B hardly need to be operating Systems. I've seen people argue (AFK) about wether coke or Pepsi is better. I mean... even the worst expletive can not represent my contempt for these people. It's SUGAR+WATER. WHO THE *censored* CARES. They do, and you know why? Human nature. subconciously (or maybe even conciously) they think, "oh, I use/Drink/eat product A, It's competition is Product B, because I am smart, I must be using the best one of the two, therefore product A is clearly better. And then sometimes they will take attacks on product A as a personal attack on their intelligence. Adding explicit statements about how far they were dropped on their head as a baby is hardly a good way to change their mind. It would be like going up to somebody, saying, "I want to be your friend. I will help you" and then stabbing them and yelling "your MOTHER WAS A *censored*!" and running away. Hardly a good way to make friends, trust me, I know from experience.  .

If you get this in your e-mail, delete it.
Your image isn't very clear; this is, the text part of it is not clear.  What does it say?  How is it scam?  I'm not doubting that it's scam, just wondering what is the nature of the scam.  Is it trying to lead the USER to a fraudulent site where they're asked to enter their Google username and password?Soybean, I just now made the pedicure larger . Also, when you click the link you get this:

No, it was via another account that does not haven filters in place. I use that account when unknown sites want my email address. I use the gmail account for people I know or for business work.

Frustration detection

Our patent-pending low level driver technology detects when you’re FRUSTRATED by your PC and tells you which application is causing it.

So, it can detect you're emotional STATE. Alrighty then.

then it jumps on the whole "cloud computing" bandwagon by claiming that everybody using the software is sharing information. Thing is, what use is the information? All they stated the program does is detect when you "are frustrated" and then tell you what application is hogging the CPU at that time. The first step is computationally intractable; the second is trivially simple. Neither is scalable to a cloud.

Basically, they have a vague goal, a vague design plan, and then they tossed a few buzzwords in as well. I'd stay AWAY. Quote

Solve : HP G5200uk-m Desktop PC to be connected to 2 monitors?

Hi!

First of all, I am a complete noob at tech and if this question has ever been asked/answered here my apologies then.
I have just purchased a HP G5200uk-m desktop pc,technical details:

http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/7497009/art/hp/pavilion-g5200uk-m-deskto.html

It came with a 20"Hp monitor which has been working fine but now I would like to connect another monitor,a 24"AOC 2436SWA widescreen TFT 1900x1080 to the PC and use them both at the same time.

How can I make that happen?Thank you indeed!

                                                                                                          Regards, Thomas
Here are some things mothers do with TWO monitors.

Classroom display. The original monitor is used by the teacher. A much larger monitor is viewed by STUDENTS. Everything on the teacher monitor is seen by the students. A simple adapter may be used.

Expanded desktop. Two monitors of the same size are side by side. A document or spread sheet goes across both monitors, thereby increasing the NUMBER of columns. A Dual-Head graphics card is required.

Two window workstation. The user has two programs open at the same time. He has two SEPARATE displays. The Operating system may PERMIT cut and paste  between the two.  Again, Dual-Head graphics.

The most piratical solution for three is a Dual Head graphics card. If you machine will not not allow another graphics card, there are some other options, but can be rather expensive.

Graphics card : NVIDIA® GeForce® 6150 SE is capable of two monitors. However, I do not know how it is implemented on you particular desktop. Are there two video ports on the back?

Solve : Anyone fancy a challenge?

Answer»

Wonder if anyone could clear something up for me.
I'm going through a tutorial sheet from University but it has no answers to check against.
One of the questions is 'Convert the following decimal into Little Endian single precision floating point format'

The decimal is -0.000123

The answer i get is

B9 00 F9 80

Thing is, i DOWNLOADED a calculator that claims to do Big and Little Endian, so i can check my answers

http://www.wfwsoftware.com/hexit.html

But this calc gives a different answer - B9 00 F9 90 - one digit difference
I checked my answers three times and i still get the same outcome, if the calculator is right then i cant see where i've GONE wrong.
Can any one confirm my answer.
ThanksI get:

90 F9 00 B9.

the second answer you got from the calc was in Big-endian format; your's, well, I don't know.

Mine uses IEEE 32-bit floating point.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_precision

Yeah, thats right, you got to reverse it for Little Endian.

This is what i've been taught, I have to work it out by hand for forthcoming tests. No calculators allowed.

I got 1 for the sign (obviously, because of the negative value)

0.00000000000010000000111110011000 is 0.000123 in binary

then to 1.0000000111110011000 X 2^-13

remove the first 1 and decimal point and 'pad out' to 23 bit by adding 0's the the end

So 00000001111100110000000

then -13 - -127 = -13+127 = 127-13 = 114

So, 144= 01110010 for the exponent

bring it all together

Sign 1  exponent 01110010 and mantissa 00000001111100110000000

which is 10111001000000001111100110000000

split into groups of 4 to convert to hex

1011 / 1001 / 0000 / 0000 / 1111 / 1001 / 1000 / 0000

Which makes B 9 0 0 F 9 8 0

Then group and reverse 80 F9 00 B9

Can you see anywhere that i've gone wrong, cuz i still cant see it.
Oh yeah, thanks for the reply.
I think IVE sussed it

0.000123 is 0.00000000000010000000111110011001

and not 0.00000000000010000000111110011000

Thats the difference, that last digit will turn the 8 to a 9

1.If you decide to uninstall the current Iobit software(program files). Look for appropriate uninstaller icons or software support for the said program for it may be corrupted.
2. If you find the existing installer, try installing and if you are notified that the software is already installed then follow the above quoted suggestion assuming that it is not yet corrupted. Go ahead and re-install the software, it won't damage anything.
