Solve : Little Endian Conversion?

Answer»

I'm trying to learn how to convert Little Endian single string floating point to decimal. Everything i have FOUND on the internet just points towards using programs, but i need to do it using maths with no calculator.

Without any information to go on the only thing that i've found that seems to work is this -

  • Convert Little Endian to Big Endian
  • Convert the hex into binary
  • Convert binary to decimal
  • Move the decimal point

For example -

To convert 10 B1 07 B4 to decimal

To Big Endian = B4 07 B1 10

Into binary = 10110100000001111011000100010000

Into decimal = 3020402960

move decimal point = 3.020402960 x 10^9

Is it a simple as that??

Can anyone confirm this for me??

Well-known processors that use the big-endian format include Motorola
Intel based systems use the little kind. The base address has the lower part of a number. But floating point has its own rules.
You need to understand fully the loading point stuff. Which kind?
Quote
The term floating point refers to the fact that the radix point (decimal point, or, more commonly in computers, binary point) can "float"; that is, it can be placed anywhere relative to the significant digits of the number. This position is indicated separately in the INTERNAL representation, and floating-point representation can thus be thought of as a computer realization of scientific notation. Over the years, several different floating-point representations have been used in computers; however, for the last ten years the most commonly encountered representation is that defined by the IEEE 754 Standard.

Thanks, but i dont really need to know the 'whys and where fors' for my forth coming test.

I just want to know how to work it out, a formula, but i think i've cracked it. I just stupidly over looked the obvious. A few days ago a learnt how to convert decimal to Little Endian, all i had to do basically was the same in reverse.

I think the answer to - To convert 10 B1 07 B4 to decimal is 1.263727e7

Just need practice.

Update: Passed Test One - 85%Will you share the answers with us?
(Just asking.)
CANT remember the questions to be honest!

There was some binary addition, twos compliment, logic gates and truth tables, hex addition, octal addition, converting binary to hex and to dec and VICE versa.

It was easier than i thought. Just shows that you can't beat revision and preparation.

Solve : Watch out for 'Microsoft Tech Support' scams?

Watch out for 'Microsoft Tech Support' scams

 By Woody LEONHARD

"I'm from Microsoft and I'm here to help." At least, that's what reader MP thought he heard when he answered the phone. It wasn't.

Con artists all over the world are bilking big bucks out of unsuspecting Microsoft customers — including savvy Windows users.

In this new epidemic, the scammers are sophisticated, glib, and oh-so-convincing. Know the warning signs. You may be next.

Inside one con that almost succeeded

Here's how MP describes his experience:

"I was having a problem with Windows XP and posted an inquiry on one of the [presumed to be] Microsoft support sites. My wife received a call from someone wanting to talk to me about my computer. She gave a time when I would be home. I was expecting a call from my ISP. The call came at the arranged time, but it was not the ISP. The caller said he was working on behalf of Microsoft and directed me to a very convincing website for confirmation of his company and his credentials. The caller knew my name and telephone number.

"We talked about the problems I've been having with Windows XP. He said it sounded like a virus. He guided me into Windows XP's Event Viewer and showed me a number of red and yellow flags for applications and systems, which he said were indicative of a malware attack.

"He offered to get a technician to sort the problem for free and directed me to a website, where I had to enter some contact information and my Windows activation code, from the sticker on my PC. He talked me through the process — we were on the phone for almost an hour at that point — and it all went smoothly until I had to enter some sort of warranty code that I didn't have. He told me to hang on while he checked with his boss.

"A few minutes later, he was back and gave me the unfortunate news that my free support period had ended. He told me I would have to pay $99 for extended support and directed me to a place on the website to enter my credit card information. I'm not sure why, but I smelled a rat, so I hung up on him.

"The caller knew what he was talking about, knew my name and phone number, knew that I was running Windows XP, and knew that I was having problems. I'm a professional electrical engineer and fully aware of phishing and other scams, but I was nearly taken in."

MP sent me the address of the site the caller used for a reference. I won't repeat it here because, to this day, I'm not sure whether it's a legitimate consulting firm site or whether it exists only to provide a backstory for swindlers.

The website certainly had an air of LEGITIMACY. It identified the caller's company as a "Microsoft Registered Partner" with an official Microsoft logo. "This company is a Technical Support Provider," the site says. "As computers have become more popular and sophisticated, the job of keeping them running has fallen to an ever-expanding group of specialists, collectively known as Solution Engineers."

The site went on to say, "The first point of contact is generally the manufacturer's tech support. However, as manufacturers and others scale back on in-house technical support to control costs, innovative and entrepreneurial technical support companies are building a robust business of providing help and a sense of security to consumers."

Then I noticed that the site's mailing address is in Kolkata and the domain is registered in Jharkhand, India — a long, long way from MP's stomping grounds.

Robust? You could call it that.

Be aware of tricks of the con artist's trade

I wish MP's story were unique, but it isn't.

How in the world did the con artist take him in? It's easier than you think.

In MP's case, it's possible that somebody milked his name from a Microsoft tech-support site and looked him up in a phone book. But it's far more likely that the con artist simply called phone numbers randomly. Think about it. If you called 100 people and told them (with a ring of friendly authority in your voice) that you were from Microsoft and wanted to help them with the PC problem they reported, what percentage would take you up on the offer? I'd guess it's at least 10%.

Tricking users such as MP (or his wife) into revealing names or PC problems is a con artist's stock in trade: if you aren't immediately suspicious, casual banter will often reveal a wealth of personal information. For example, it can take a scammer all of five seconds to find out whether you're using Windows XP or Win7: "Do you see the big circle in the lower-left corner? Oh, sorry, I meant do you see the word 'Start' in the lower-left corner?"

Everybody's Event Viewer has red and yellow flags. Check yours right now and you'll see them:

Windows XP: Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools; then double-click Computer Management.

Vista: Do the same, except for the final step. Double-click Event Viewer instead.

Win7: Click Start, type Event, click Event Viewer.

On the left of the Event Viewer window, expand the Windows Logs/System branch. See the ocean of colored flags? They're mostly harmless, although they look ALARMING — which is why Windows makes it difficult to find them. It's good fodder for a flim flam.

The website used for establishing the caller's credentials may be completely legit — or maybe not — it's very, very hard to tell. Anybody can become a Microsoft Partner; it TAKES maybe two minutes, and all you need is a Hotmail account or other Windows Live ID. (Don't believe it? Go to the Microsoft Partner Network site and fill out the forms.)

As for the "Technical Support Provider" claim on the website — the term has no official meaning, as far as I can tell. The site's owners may be guilty of puffery, but that's a widespread defect among consultancies. The fact that the site's based in India, and MP lives halfway around the world from there, isn't a definitive sign — but it certainly doesn't inspire confidence. Although Microsoft has tech support offices overseas, it's a stretch to think that an overseas Microsoft affiliate would be assigned to follow up on a tech support issue on the other side of the planet. Is the site legit? I don't know.

The overwhelming con give-away — the big red flag — in all of this? Microsoft doesn't work that way. Think about it. Microsoft isn't going to call you to solve your problems unless you've received a very specific commitment from a very specific individual within Microsoft — a commitment that often comes only after repeated phone calls on your part, generally accompanied by complaint elevation to second- or third-level support engineers. Microsoft typically doesn't respond to random online requests for help by calling a customer and spending a lot of time with them. Sorry, it just doesn't happen.

What to do if you think you're being scammed

You think you're on the receiving end of a Microsoft Tech Support scam phone call?

If you aren't sure whether you're being conned, ask the person on the other end of the line for your Microsoft Support Case tracking number — every MS tech support interaction has a tracking number or Support ID. Then ask for a phone number and offer to call your caller back. Con artists won't LEAVE trails.

If you think a con is being run from overseas — much more common in these days of nearly-free VoIP cold-calling — your chances of nailing the perpetrator slide from extremely slim to none. It's prudent to be suspicious of any Microsoft expert who doesn't seem to be calling from your country.

Whatever happens, don't give a stranger with unverifiable credentials full access to your computer. I see reports of people who were talked into setting up a Remote Desktop connection, allowing the ersatz expert unfettered permission to download and install any program that suited his criminal fancy. If that has happened to you, my best advice is to restore a complete backup of your PC made before the call or completely reinstall Windows.

If you believe you're being conned, get all the information you possibly can. Then, immediately after you end the conversation, call the police. Be sure you keep records (or use your browser's Back button) to keep track of the websites you've visited, and offer that information to the authorities.

If you've already been conned — you've given out personal information or a credit-card number — start by contacting your bank or the credit-card issuing company and follow the identity-theft reporting procedures.

Now you know. Warn your friends.

Thanks for posting that.  It's something about which those of us who are aware should spread the word.

Here's some good advice from Microsoft: Avoid scams that use the Microsoft name fraudulently I believe I heard about this somewhere. they are just your standard phishing scams; the fact that he was experiencing problems was pure coincidence; and the event viewer messages are informational and warning messages that always appear there.

They just phone at random. There is no "search for information" as is implied there. It's still something to watch for. Personally if they phoned me I would mess with them.

scammer: you have malware, I can help you remove it
me: OH NO! I knew this would happen.... should I give the dog a flea bath?
scammer: um... no, I just need you to go start->Run, and enter eventvwr and press enter
me:OH GOD! I'm so scared now I can't type! where is start?

Solve : FF4 may use undocumented hacks...?

Answer»

...to force itself as a pinned application at setup: http://blog.mozilla.com/rstrong/2011/02/09/firefox-auto-pinned-to-the-win7-task-bar/

What appears to be a planned- or possibly even already implemented -  feature for Firefox 4: Automatically "pinning" themselves to the taskbar upon installation.

This in and of itself doesn't seem to notable, except that there is no programmatic way for any application to add itself as a Pinned application- the idea is that the user CONTROLS what is and is not pinned. This means that Firefox 4 is using an entirely undocumented method of pinning themselves. Probably something like this.

The "defense" is that Internet Explorer is pinned by default; that seems rather flimsy, since in the EU where there is that "browser ballot", if the user doesn't select IE, it isn't pinned... in fact even if they select IE it isn't pinned, it basically acts as a shortcut to start the browser ballot and is removed regardless of the selection. Everywhere else the "BUT MS DUZ IT!" excuse it flimsy at best, since IE is only added as the default upon first installation. If it's removed- it stays removed. They don't add themselves to quick launch when you update IE (as Firefox will do when it updates) or when  you install Word or Excel or any number of their applications; it's a default. Saying that it's "unfair" is pretty stupid. What is "unfair" is that that if they go through with this it will be Microsoft making sure their "feature" is still working in later windows versions, by adding even more appCompat shims to make sure Firefox can still perform the undesired behaviour using the undocumented method it does now, because if somebody updates to, say, Windows 8, and their copy of Firefox 4 suddenly crashes at startup, they aren't going to blame Firefox or Mozilla, they will think it's the new version of windows causing the problem- after all, that's all they had changed.

It's interesting because no microsoft application, and certainly no other browser, automatically "pins" itself, and I doubt very many of them explored the possibility. And yet they still feel that they have the "disadvantage", ONE could claim they do, since  IE is installed by default with most versions of Windows. But thing is, without the browser, they couldn't get another browser (excepting of course WGET and CURL, but for some reason I don't think everybody understands how to use those, and they aren't on a standard windows install either; and  suggesting that everybody understands the concepts required to download another browser with ftp (not to mention that they would have the URL memorized) is pretty silly.

Even sillier is the constant suggestion that Microsoft give people a choice. They already have a bloody choice. If you want to use another browser, you switch to another browser. They don't try to impede you in any way, In my case only a few applications launch IE when they need to use a browser, and those are all decidedly non-Microsoft applications; additionally, last time I checked Windows was a Microsoft product, it's pretty stupid to force them to actually have other, competing pieces of software on their disk. It basically means that Microsoft becomes a Pro Bono distributor for those other applications, and somehow that is construed as "fair".

Anyway, the  fact that any of the developers (of the setup application or otherwise) are delving into the territory of the undocumented concerns me. Are there other undocumented hacks that firefox USES? Do they know that this will break catastrophically on other language versions? I hope this "feature" doesn't make it to the released version. Using undocumented functions and structures LEADS one down a slippery slope of version compatibility issues, and for all they know it could be changed with the upcoming SP1 release for Windows 7. (No doubt they will claim malice on the part of MS for changing the wholly undocumented APIs).

It also makes me wonder if they use any other undocumented APIs.

Solve : How do I transfer a voice mail to my laptop??

Answer»

Hi,

I recently got a very FUNNY voice mail from a friend of mine on my Verizon Blackberry, and I would like to SAVE it on my laptop. How would I GO about either transferring or copying the voice mail to my laptop?

Thanks!

-cinque8Have you tried emailing it to yourself at your default email address? Then you could save it to your computer.I've never used a smartphone, so maybe they do things differently, but voicemail usually isn't saved as a file.  In such a case, you would have hook a microphone up to your laptop and use it to record the message.

Of course, if smartphones do indeed save voicemail messages to the device, then ignore what I just SAID (although it is still an option).TulsaRose,

I will look into your email suggestion, it sounds like it just might work. I did try something similar to what CBMatt suggested. I got a 3.5mm dual-male-connector audio cable and connected one end to the HEADSET jack of my Blackberry and the other end to the microphone jack on my laptop. I then downloaded the free version of Goldwave sofware, and I was able to copy the file to my hard drive.

Thanks

Solve : PCTV HD Pro Stick?

Answer»

I've been trying to hook it up with my CABLE. I have verizon fios. I tried unhooking the coaxial cable from the tv and plugging it into the tuner. But with both windows media center and with pctvs program it says it can't find any channels. I have an extra composite video slot, but there is no where for the stereo audio output to plug into and I don't currently have an s-video cable so I don't know if that would work. Pctvs program seems stuck at saying "initializing tv hardware" no MATTER what settings are on. Am I doing something wrong. I've checked and as far as I can tell the drivers are up to date. So I am completely lost. I bought an S-video cable and hooked it to the cable box and I can now watch shows on my computer BUT, there is no sound. Any ideas?s-video is just video only, you will need separate audio cables for sound.okay i found in the manuel where it says to "3. Connect the stereo audio outputs of your set-top box with the stereo input (3.5mm headphone jack) of the adapter cable." Where would that be on the back of the cable box? I have 2 sets composite jacks, IR receiver input, one marked "RESERVED", digital audio,  and optical audio. Here is an link to the manuel, its on page 4 http://cdn.pinnaclesys.com/SupportFiles/pmc/Poster_PCTV800e_SAP41006731.pdf
This is the back of my cable box

Two of the jacks on number 9 are left and right audio.  Since you have a s-video cable connected you don't need to connect the video RCA jack.I found a cable that has the component cables on one end and the headphone jack on the other, but when i plugged it in there was no sound, when only the yellow one was plugged in i got sound for a few seconds and then really loud static. I'm resetting up the entire thing to see if i can just use the component cable thing i found instead of the s-videoOkay i figured it out, I plugged the cable in backwards and it works(yellow is plugged into red, white is plugged into white, and red is plugged into yellow). What does it mean when it wants an ir receiver/remote, does best BUY sell this? if so could you send me a link, to the product at bestbuy.com? Thanks

Solve : What is best Portable DVD player with only AC POWER no Batteries?

Answer»

What is the best Portable DVD player out there that runs on AC Power cord (where you plug into outlet) and doesn't have any batteries. Most i see are with RECHARGEABLE battery that only last a few hours and you can't play the DVD movie in the Player unless the Battery is fully charged.
Is there any GOOD portable DVD players out there that ONLY runs off  AC Power cord and not rechargeable batteries? But then it wouldn't be "portable". What's the difference whether or not it has batteries? You'll always have the option to use AC power.I had a portable DVD player before and even with the AC Power cord I wouldn't play the dvd if the battery was low, the battery needed to be charged to FULL before I could play the dvd movie again. So what is the use of the rechargeable battery if you can't just plug in the dvd player and use it if you need to recharge the battery ever 3 hours. I don't want to wait til the battery is fully charged so I can WATCH a DVD movie. All you need to do is make sure whatever you PURCHASE says AC OR Battery.

Solve : email - can you block owners??

Answer»

Like many people, I block email addresses and domains to try to reduce the AMOUNT of spam delivered to my email account.  I notice that many unwanted emails still get through because the senders regularly CHANGE the domain name.  I decided to check one of these domain names and used the 'Whois' site to find 'Whistleresist.net', the latest used by a recurring spammer.  It showed that 'customer service' owned 7174 domain names and that the domain had changed name servers 7 times over 2 YEARS.  I suspect that this is a company providing easy access to SPAMMERS to different domain names to help them defeat email filtering and allow them to get through.  Is there any record of the owner of a domain included in emails?  If you could block the owner, you could block a NUMBER of unwanted emails in one go.

If it is not legal, why was I able to find it? And even WOT did not mark it as bad. How would it POSSIBLY be legal?

Agreed, it is the internet after all.Agreed.
It is hard to understand how blatant it is. You would think they would try to cover up what they are doing with some word tricks. For sure 'Watson'** would not take 3 milliseconds to say "ILEGAL! - block it!"

Solve : SD Card crashes my system?

Answer»

Hello,

I have an Acer Aspire One netbook with a multicard reader slot on the side which has always functioned fine with SD CARDS.

However now each time I put a card into the slot I get the windows box asking if I want to upload files etc but then a blue screen apppears with writing on. This is only momentary and I have no time to read any error messages before the system shuts down completely and then reboots.

Is there anything I can do to restore this function before buying a USB adaptor for my cards?

I have tried DIFFERENT cards and always the same.

Thanks Code: [Select]Is there anything I can do to restore this function before buying a USB adapter for my cards? No, anything that makes you PC CRASH is risky.
BTW, not is a good time to review your backup plan. Windows does a good job of recovery from a crash. But one of these days it will not recover from the crash you could avoid.

Of course, if the Acer Aspire One netbook is still under warranty, you should expect Acer to fix the problem.

IMHO anybody who BUYS a notebook PC should get a three year warranty. Once a low-end laptop/notebook croaks it becomes a doorstop. And not just Acer, but Dell,  HP and the rest who do the low ball disposable toy business.Try reinstalling the card reader's drive and then give it a try with an empty card, try to copy something on it!

Solve : Do I need a new hard-drive??

Answer»

My daughter-in-law has a Dell Dimention E520 computer, she was saying it's beginning to run very very slow. Her hard drive saids it has 64.4 GB CAPACITY, she's using 48.4 GB with only 16.0 GB of free space, or 20% free space left, is she going to need a new hard-drive?
I also found on her pc that she has 86 programs running, is this a LOT to be running? Could this make her pc run slow?
Her computer came with 512MB of Ram Memory, I'm trying to find out how much memory she is using or how much she has left, I'm not sure how to do this, can anyone help me out?  Thanks......Windows XP with 512MB RAM?  Will run better with 1GB RAM.OI bit Advanced Sytem Care has a 'Smart Ram' in its Utilities, this will tell you how much RAM you're using and also free a little of it up.

TIP: Make sure you disable the 'Start with Windows'

2- 3 GB would be even better!!Ok, I'll check it with Advanced SystemCare and post the results.... As far as her hard drive only having 20% of free space left, would this make her pc run super slow, and what about having 86 programs running, is that about normal?  Thanks...........I would say 86 programs is NOT normal. You need to go through the pc and uninstall a whole bunch of programs or reinstall the operating system altogether (better option).
To uninstall unused programs, go to Control Panel and open "Add/Remove Programs". Go through the list and uninstall programs that you know you don't use. Be careful not to uninstall necessary programs, though. If in doubt, give us a shout.
If you think you want to tackle reinstalling the operating system, let us know. It's a bit more involved. You could also check preference settings in some of those programs.  If these are programs that automatically start when the computer is started, they may have a setting to not start when Windows starts.  For example, I have Yahoo! Messenger installed but I have it set to not start when Windows starts.  I don't often use it, so there's no reason to have it starting with Windows starts. I can just start it when needed.

No, 20% should not make it run super slow.  But, it's getting to the point where free space needs to be monitored.  Getting down to 15% and lower can have a slowing EFFECT.  A larger hard drive is not necessary if free space can be maintained at about the present level or greater.I'm hoping they mean 86 processes...not programs.86 processes seems excessive, especially with 512MB RAM.  No wonder it's running so slowly.Go to Cruical and use their memory scan to tell you what you have now, and what upgrades are available.

http://www.crucial.com

They have good prices and service, but even if you don't buy from them it's a good starting point.  I'm guessing you have two 256MB memory sticks.  If you replace even just one of them with a 1GB memory stick, for a TOTAL of 1.2 GB, you will see a noticeable performance improvement.

Back in the old days when hard drives were much smaller than today's, and space was tight, it was a standard routine to check your hard drive often for unused programs and get rid of them to free up space.  It's something you need to do on a regular basis since you are getting low on free space.  It's either that or get a bigger hard drive.

I also should add that if your free space goes below 15% (it's not a hard fast number) you will have a problem defragging. We brought the computer to a repair shop and the the guy said we needed to expand the ram, he put in two GB of ram and tuned it up. He took off our CCleaner, Malwarebytes, and our anti virus software Microsoft Security Essentials. He said having these things on your computer could harm it so he installed a diffrent anti virus software and charged us $50 extra dollars. The last shop we had the computer in said there was nothing WRONG with having these programs on and it was good to run Microsoft Security Essentials at least once a week. Is Microsoft Essentials good to have for anti virus protection, and is it alright to run the CCleaner and Malwarebytes in case of a computer threat? Is this guy just try to make extra money off us or what, can anyone help us out?  Thanks..... Quote
Is this guy just try to make extra money off us...
Sure looks that way to me.  The previous shop was right and this guy was wrong.  I used Microsoft Security Essentials for awhile on my Windows XP system which only has 512MB of RAM and noticed it sometimes used a lot of memory.  Since the computer only has 512MB of RAM, I decided to remove Microsoft Security Essentials and install avast! Antivirus.

With 2GB of RAM, I see no reason to have removed Microsoft Security Essentials.  How is your computer running now?  What antivirus program did the guy install? Quote from: mark227 on February 11, 2011, 10:00:19 AM

Sometimes the links on that type of site don't LEAD directly to the ram file itself, but to some kind of script so that you can play it in a browser. If you right click the LINK you can do "save as" but what you get is not a .ram file. Maybe if you gave me a link?
http://www.otr.net/

This is the link and maybe you can help.OK I did a bit of checking and I think I've got it clear. A ram file is not an Real Player audio file. (That's a .RA file) It is a text file. When a browser receives this file, it launches Real Player as a helper application. Then the web site "streams" the audio data to Real Player which decodes it and plays it through your computer sound card and speakers. So you can't get an mp3 because they have copyright.
I was afraid it might be something like that. I guess the guy doesn't know if the shows are public domain so he doesn't want you to download them. I really appreciate your help. Quote from: ron2 on February 20, 2011, 05:10:52 AM

You can use the free VLC media Player to convert ram audio to mp3.

If it is public domain!!!!!!!!! I hope I made that quite clear. Because we would not want you breaching copyright. I did make that clear, didn't I?

1. Open the ram file in a text editor such as Notepad.
2. look for an embedded string starting rtsp:// and ending .rm

example rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm - An interesting show.rm?title="Real Interesting"&author="Salmon Trout"&copyright="Fish Locomotive"

Cut out the bit starting rtsp and ending .rm

In this example

rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm - An interesting show.rm

Now replace EVERY space with %20

rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm%20-%20An%20interesting%20show.rm

Copy this to your clipboard

Now start VLC Media Player and select "Media" -> "Convert/Save" -> "Network"

Where it says "Please insert a network URL", in that box paste in the string you copied

At the bottom of the window choose "Convert/save" dropdown, choose "Convert"

Now in "Profile" dropdown choose "mp3"

Supply "Destination File" details and click "Start" & wait the same time as the length of the show.

This is just an outline for you to fool around with. There are loads of resources on the web about capturing audio streams

Thanks . I'll play around with your suggestion. One thing I just remembered. Awhile back I remember saving the file and using my media player to get it and there was an option to save target as, and it converted to mp3. Have since reformatted and now my media player doesn't give me that option. It doesn't recognize the file. Strange.

Solve : Lil question about Android...compared to Touchwiz?

Answer»

Well, lets GET straight to the point.

I've used a Samsung phone which has TouchWiz (1.0) and i've noticed a nifty little feature.
When running an app, lets say a card game app, if the app wants to access an area, for this example your "My Pictures" or something ALIKE, the phone/os will prompt you with the choice of letting you say yes or no. Depending on what the app wants to the do the app will continue.

However, i've used an Android (2.2 methinks) phone a bit and i've seen that when you install an app, it prompts you then with what the app will want to go to, for instance, a WEATHER app, would request internet access. It will give you the option to say yes or no but the option of yes or no will depend on whether or not you install the app. Yes, you give it internet access and install it. No, won't give it internet access and won't install it at all.

So what im trying to get at is that, is there any option on Android (preferably before 2.3, definitely before 3.0) devices which do the same THING as TouchWiz does?

Thanks guys! You might want to post your question on HOWARD Forums or some similar site.Haha, I can't really be bothered to do that

But thanks for the link

Then i don't understand the problem!!picture above shows how i sign in, and does anyone else believe they are the same sign in and sign out?ok, click on the messenger button and sign out, click back and I'm still signed into msn gamesSo, let me get this RIGHT, you're signing out using messenger then you click on the 'return to the previous page' arrow and you're still signed in!!   What do you expect to happen??from the START
I sign into msn games from the msn games homepage.
I want to sign out but there isn't any buttom, option, etc. to do that.
Clicking on the messenger button was suggested.
I do that.
Then I click the backward arrow in my browser and I'm still connected to msn games.
Hope that is clear.
How to sign out??
Sign out and do not click on the 'backward arrow', that will return you to the 'previous' page where you were signed in

Have you tried, signing out with messenger, CLOSE the browser, open it again, go to msn games, are you still signed in. I bet you aren't!I did not follow all the way thru.  Signed out with the messenger option.  Clicked back and saw I was still signed in BUT then I tried to surf and sure enough I was asked to sign in.  THANK you very much.  SOLVED

Solve : New computer Harddrive wiped clean?

Answer»

If one had a new computer that had the hard drive wiped clean could one sit down using the keyboard to write the operating system to make it work  or would this be SOMETHING that just could not be done?

John What?Writing an OS may take some TIME....so i guess in theory the answer would be yes.

Check back in 5 or 6 years when it's close to completion...No you could not. Since in that condition your keyboard (or any PERIPHERAL) means nothing to your cpu. First you must build a boot loader in other machine, in assembly language of your processor. This boot loader is responsible in loading the basic of your operating system. Including keyboard, monitor drivers, and also memory and storage manager. Only after you get these done you can virtually do EVERYTHING from that said computer.

Not recommended, though RIGHT. You use another working machine to create tools you need.
Or, you buy some ready made tools from someone.

I think actually there might be some confusion. At least I hope there is.

an "instrumental" is, (sort of obviously) merely the performance of a piece without any vocals... or occasionally with an instrument accompaniment instead of vocals (If I understand correctly, anyway). This could be either done because the artist(s) haven't finished the lyrics, haven't quite finished the song; usually as a "teaser" track. (for example, the Seven Seas of Rhye Instrumental that can be found on Queen's first Album), or simply be recorded after the fact (often as a filler to fill up an album, much like "acoustic" recordings). There are also karaoke tracks that are simply the result of running the appropriate filters on the actual track to remove the vocals.

The latter is NOT an instrumental version. It is a "karaoke" version. Also, the filtering generally diminishes the song quality.

I say this because the only way you can get an proper instrumental is of the original artists decide to re-record the piece without any vocals. The next best thing is for somebody to cover that piece and not provide any vocals. Either way, it will require a lot of EFFORT. This is why I suspect you may actually be looking for something more like a karaoke version, because I am unwilling to jump to the conclusion that you truly think that creating a proper instrumental track to a given piece can be done by just anybody. The latter however can b E done by just about anybody. My three year old MP3 player has some silly karaoke setting that attempts to filter out vocals.

Ahh right. That makes things much clearer. In that case im asking for a Karaoke. However couldn't you call a cover also an instrumental?

He knows what he's talking about. And truly, what he said was perfectly relevant and correct; even complimentary to you, since he assumed you knew what an instrumental really was (since you were talking about it); I however did not assume anything about what you knew or did not know and it appeared that there was some confusion of terms, which I brought forward.

As I noted afterwards, and instrumental is a filtered track. It's a completely separate recording created by the same artists (usually the same artists; at any rate it's a completely separate studio recording). So, when you respond "Hopefully that might encourage someone to make it exist." when somebody notes that what you are looking for doesn't exist- in the context of what an instrumental is it is presumptuous; the fact that you are looking for an instrumental (or so you said, you really are just looking for a filtered audio track of the non-instrumental version) and think somebody should make it exist if it doesn't exist implies that you believe the original artists- or really anybody with studio equipment and the willingness to perform the piece- should make it simply because you want one, it is perfectly valid to reply with something like "You really do think the world exists to supply your requirements, don't you?".

The only reason I didn't say something to that effect was that I guessed you had no idea what an instrumental really was and may in fact have meant a filtered, "karaokeized" version of the actual track, which takes far less effort (effort that still needs to be done, no less). It was only by chance that I really considered it. In fact, in many ways - and perhaps to his chagrin- Salmon Trout overestimated you, by assuming you knew what you were talking about (what an instrumental was); I on the other hand DOUBTED wether you really knew what it was you were after. With that in mind, the heckling you received ought to be received at least in small part as a compliment.

Thing is, filtering out the vocals will always remove other portions of the audio, resulting in it not turning out to good; and it hardly ever REMOVES all of the vocals.

Actually, TBH a better approach might be to search for a MIDI file of the piece; that will, by definition, be purely instrumental.Or just get the 2nd Deep Purple album...and go from there...

Seems like that could prove to be a dangerous way of handling unknown file types.

I would think a better, safer approach would be to simply plug in the file extension at a dedicated file extension discovery service such as http://filext.com/  or http://www.file-extensions.org/ - you'll then be able to decide if you've got the proper program(s) on your machine to handle the file, or if you need to install said program(s).He's managed to bump a year-old Topic...Hi, PATIO.

Solve : Why Non-line of sight WLAN.?

Answer»

Why Non-line of sight WLAN.

Why would you care? Soon it will become more important as internet and WLAN use grows in metropolitan areas.

In another post a big deal about line of sight propagation caused some confusion. With reference to microwave propagation there is line of sight propagation in another form called non-line of sight propagation.Really. It is true.
First of all, the euro some common expressions used. Microwave usually refers to frequencies in the range of 300 MHz to 3000 MHz. Also, when we talk about a specific frequency, for example 900 MHz, it may not mean specifically the very exact frequency of 900 MHz. The phenomenon may occur also below or above the frequency, or even over a wide band of frequencies. Also expressions such as absorb, reflect, deflect and disturb are not absolute things in this context. Some material may absorb  microwave emission, but not entirely. Likewise some materials may reflect or even deflect a microwave emission, but  not entirely. I'll try to keep this simple.
In the traditional conventional line of sight method, microwave repeaters are located on  tower(s) high enough above the surface to avoid objects that absorb, reflect or deflect microwave radiation. That method allows the use of low power, small bandwidth and gives high performance.I t is the most desirable form of communication for a given POINT point task.
Having towers everywhere is not always feasible. There is the cost involved, and one end of the propagation path might be a mobile device. We are all familiar with the cell technology where towers are located throughout the metropolis and provide communication with mobile handhold devices almost anywhere in the city. Many times the communication is really not a visual point-to-point communication. This brings up the subject of non-line of sight propagation.
This also brings up the question of which frequencies to use. It is generally held that the lower frequencies have better penetration and are less subject to absorbtion from things such as tree leaves, wood buildings and snowfall. That is generally true. However, with the higher frequencies reflections and deflections become more and more common and become part of the propagation path. In some cases the loss of signal strength and signal quality of the higher frequencies is such that compensation can be made by using wider bandwidth. This concept is hard to explain to somebody. What it basically means is that if you have enough bandwidth you can overcome reflection and deflections and resulting Moiré patterns by finding specific frequencies that work well in a dynamic environment where there are multiple reflections and deflections of a signal path that is changing with movement of a mobile device. But this requires a very sophisticated digital signal processor at both ends of the path. Getting that much CPU poser in a mobile device is hard to do. Traditional analog methods are not good enough to overcome these problems. but with the use of very sophisticated Digital Signal Processing it now is possible to use UHF and Extremely High Frequencies for non-line of sight propagation quite successfully. With enough performance to be worthwhile.

Here's an article from Wikipedia.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-line-of-sight_propagation
Non-line-of-sight propagation -Wikipedia
(There is also non-line-of-sight with regard to weapons systems.)

Why does this matter to the AVERAGE person? Because the new technologies in Cell communication and Wif-Fi will use more of this technology in the future. Same companies already have desktop size super transceivers that can communicate several miles without the need of towers. One CLAIMS they did 20 miles on 900MHZ low power with useful data rate of 3Mbps.

If the above is eve n near true, the DSL people had better lower prices go out of business. Presently, DSL has to be withing one mile of a distribution station, a station with either optical fiber or other broadband service.

This also means that the present day 802.11 x devices may well  become oblolete or used by those who do not  live in large cities.

The FCC has recently opened up more spectrum space in UHF, SHF and EHF bands. Under certain rules not LICENSE is need. This allows for rapid deployment in a free market. Solve : PowerPoint on a Flash Drive?

Answer»

I hope this question is in the right place.

I'm trying to put a display system together but I'm having trouble getting good information.

What I'm thinking about is an LCD monitor or Tv (probably about 32") and a flash drive.

The flash drive will have a PowerPoint Presentation (PPP) on it and I want to play that on the monitor.  I want to
use a Flash Drive as the presentation will be updated/changed periodically.

I haven't been able to find a Tv which has this capability so I'm guessing I will need some sort of interface
box.

I've seen a bunch of interface boxes which seem to do what I want but I don't know for sure that they will
play PPP's.  I saw a box by Cirago which I thought might be suitable so I emailed them to ask their advice
but all they said was that none of their products support PPP's.

What formats will the interface box need to handle in order for it to play PPP's?

Or, does anyone know of a box that will do what I need?

Thanks in advance

a variety of pictures of the food available.

I'm going to be putting together  5 of these systems so I want to keep the cost down.

What TV do you have?  Would it play a PPP?This is to be a continuous presentation? No interaction?
If there is no user interaction, you don't need a computer, just a media player. A media player can show either a digital video or a set of photos. The cost of Flash memory is very low. A flash drive that can hold three hours of HD video is just a few dollars now. The player is the more expensive part.Simple Media players are under $90 and play on any TV with component inputs.

Take a look at this:

Here is one manufacturer the low cost devices.

You can also search amazon, com for 'digital media player' and find some. Or even eBay has them.

An alternative is to just get a cheap DVD player and burn the PPP onto a DVD as a DVD movie.

My TV is a Sanyo from Wall Mart. It only plays JPG, not digital video.

Thanks for the advice.

I want to steer away from using a DVD as they have moving parts so are more prone to breakages.

I've also been using the term "PowerPoint" and I think I should have said, "slide show"  It is not imperative
that the presentation be in PowerPoint.

I think a Tv with a USB slot is going to be the best idea.  I have made a quick mwv file and put it on a flash drive.
I'm going to take it down to Walmart and plug it in and see what happens.  If it will play it as I want then I will probably GO
that way.

One last thing....would it be better to get a Tv or a monitor?  Is there a significant difference?

I would go for a TV. Mass produced, lower cost, WARRANTY,  good resale value. Some rival even the best monitors. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 08, 2011, 01:37:33 PM

I could reverse that and use it as a reason to purchase a monitor instead of a TV.How about it you grab one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883114089
Just strap it to the back of the tv or monitor and fire away. That way, you could manage the slideshow, movie, ppt, or whatever else from another computer or laptop over a network. When you say you are going to use five screens are they close enough that you could run cables to each and drive all of them off a single computer?  That would SIMPLIFY updating them. You could get one of these cards and put it in a cheap system and run hdmi or display port cables to each monitor (max length is about 50' without a booster). Then just keep the system in a closet or somewhere safe.

Solve : What can't Netbooks Do ??

Answer»

I really need a PC to surf the internet and use for storage of my photos from my digital camera. I really do nothing else. Would a netbook be OK? Can I print off a netbook? I read an article where Apple calls netbooks "pieces of junk". Is that true? Can it still download files off the internet? I'm not sure if it can play CDs or DVDs or make NEW ones. Am I better-off with a full-size laptop? What else can't a netbook do? The cost is not too much different than a notebook.Netbooks can do everything a laptop can do and ALMOST everything a desktop PC can do.

A 'netbook' is just another word for a 'small laptop'/.Even I have often wondered what is it that a net book can't do besides having a small screen...In the coming days I was going to make a similar TOPIC, I can just read up this one now.well, they can't play games very well, but then again, neither can laptops.

For browsing, word processing, printing, etc, they work just fine; in fact ,those with a Solid State drive can often last six hours on a single charge

I think you meant than.I'm currently typing this on a Samsung NC10 Netbook. It can do everything - Even basic video editing.

It actually gets a higher benchmark score than my full desktop. (But have a look at my specs)

The only problem is the lack of optical disc drive - You will need an external one or share one from another PC over a network.

Hope this Helps,

Most netbooks don't have optical drives.  They do usually have the ability to attach an external optical drive through what is called a USB port.so is netbook simply a replacement for those ultraportable laptops?a netbook is a "ultraportable" laptop. the original NAME for which was the marketing agnostic "Subnotebook" or "sublaptop" which implied they were worse then laptops. The term 'Notebook' is replacing the term 'laptop' because laptops NOWADAYS get so hot, you can't put them on your laps.

Netbook is originally a term for a small, portable computers designed for surfing the net (not for playing games, graphic editing, ect).

Solve : Vista ,Win 7,Ubuntu?

Answer»

I have a two year old Packard Bell desktop that came with a paltry 512k ddr2 mem and a celeron d360 just enough to run vista basic ,within a year I upgraded the processor to a celeron e1200 and the mem to 2mb ddr2.
Now I have ubuntu also loaded through the wubi site so it is running as a separate op on this comp and not in a window .
But after downloading the win 7 advisor it says you may struggle with mem but I have been told on a few occasions that if your comp flies with 2 meg and vista it will run win 7 no problems.
should I get win 7 for this instead of vista or wait till I build one with a separate vid card as the video mem is shared so I only have 1.7.
The mother board only takes 2 meg max and as it is a crap 250w psu will not tuch a vid card yet
2Gg is more than enough for Win7...
It's hardware requirements are actually less than Vista so whoever told you you need more does not know what he's talking about.

You can still DLoad and install the RC VER. of 7 but i would only do so from a trusted site such as MS's TechNet...
You don't have to neccessarily have to pay the membership but if you register it's still available.

I think you'll be pleasantly suprised...

PS: Between you and me i'd start shopping for a reliable bigger PSU if you plan on any upgrades to this machine at all... Quote from: patio on OCTOBER 05, 2009, 03:48:56 PM

It was the Win upgrade advisor that told me, I think it was to do with the shared mem(no video card)(( is it a conspiracy with computer manufactures lol)  and yes I will be getting a P.S.U as soon as possible and a video card something on the lines of 600+ watt.and another hard drive
It is the crap components P/B have used, if I knew then what I know now would never have got it.
You should listen to Win Advisor about as often as you listen to your Congressman....

Solve : I'm Going To Buy A New Computer, I Have Questions And Need Help!?

Answer»

Alright I'm finally going to buy a new computer, and I need your help. My current computer is a Windows ME, Intel Pentium III, 1 GHZ, 100 FSB, 128 MB RAM, 512 MB, 100 MHz, 40GB. It's safe to say its run its course. Alas I'm not sure what to look for in a new computer. Dual-core, quad-core? AMD? Windows 7? I have no clue. Money wise I'm willing to shell out about 400 or less. But I don't really know what I'm LOOKING for. I'm not a gamer and would just use it for internet, CD burning, DVD burning. Hopefully their is something fast with a large hard drive and memory in my range. When I buy a new computer will my internet speed be faster, downloads faster? What else would be different? I already have a cable modem, but I think because of my old computer it's running a lot slower then it normally would. I hope someone actually read this and is willing to help, and if you are thank you.Are we talking computer only or computer and monitor?

You can find many computers now priced under $400, such as:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883109032

Another: http://www.staples.com/Acer-AM1202-U1850A-Desktop-PC/product_801627?cmArea=FEATURED:SC3:CG71:DP4119

Actually, you can come pretty close to finding a computer and monitor for $400, if you shop around.

The two computers cited above come with Windows Vista Home Premium. I believe you can find deals now where you GET a certificate or something allowing you to upgrade the computer to Windows 7 at no additional cost. Quote

I'm not a gamer and would just use it for internet, CD burning, DVD burning.
In my opinion you might consider getting a good used computer and save your money for some nice  equipment you can enjoy. Microsoft has authorized many dealers to sell legitimate Windows XP PCs that have been reloaded for Windows XP SP3. And they sell them for a lot less that $400. They come one year warranty.

You can upgrade the memory and hard drive yourself and have a great general purpose PC.

And with the money your save, maybe buy  a good video camera and put a video on your tube to show us how you what you got and how up improved it.

Google 'refurbished XP desktop' and see what you find.YOU STILL USE WINDOWS ME? CRAZY but gets less because you are buying a new PC. Get the Free Windows 7 Upgrade, a Intel CELERON or Pentium Dual Core CPU or better, at least 2GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive or larger, a DVD burner or better, and a nVidia or ATI graphics card if you need it. nothing in their requirements requires this. notice the tag "I'm not a gamer".

Not to mention that the 400$ price range completely precludes... well whatever you are suggesting (a new build? a new PC? for 400 dollars!? with THOSE specifications? Not freaking likely).

I'd have to say that Geek-9pm's advice is excellent here- unlike the gamer kiddies that are oh-so-abundant and oh-so-loud with their "opinions" (which I might add are probably simply gleaned off "what's cool") we don't WANT what's cool. We want WHAT WORKS, and geek-9pm understands this better then any of the other helper posts, which in many cases merely regurgitate redundant information they saw on their alpha-bits boxes. (Also I might add that he has the perfect balance of "thrift" without passing the "miserly" mark. )

Well my main PC (I'm using it right now) has a K6-2 350 Mhz CPU but is a bit SLOW even with simple tasks like the internet.

But I completely agree with Geek-9pm and  BC_Programmer, you would be best off getting a used PC. The only other option I can think of for someone with your budget is a real cheap Dell (or other brand) PC but a good used PC will probably preform better anyway. Actually, I was speaking from experience too.

First joined CH when I had a 350Mhz K6-2 as my fastest machine... it was quite agreeable speed-wise, since I had trimmed out excess services and background applications. (leaving me able to have 5 or 6 application opened and still hover around the 20-process mark). Had a DVD burner- although admittedly I couldn't really get it to burn at higher speeds.Going back to the original post, instead of continuing the off-topic talk, I would recommend getting a prebuilt Dell PC like the Inspiron 546 or the Inspiron 537s
http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspndt/ct.aspx?refid=inspndt&s=dhs&cs=19&ref=dthp
It would also be a good idea to upgrade the processor to a dual core processor instead of the default Celeron. You can also buy a monitor with it for a reasonable price, if you choose. Without a monitor, the 537s is $269, with a monitor, it is $429.We can still do Dual Core and come in way below $400

Very true! Yet you can get a $40 one year warranty for it. A year from now the prices of everything will be much lower. Right now he wants a mediocre machine under $400. I mentioned earlier that he needs to spend money on other things, Like a really nice printer or camera.

Trust me. You can not be happy with any $400 computer. Either you go for something that is new, cool and near $900 or settle for something basic for under $300 used with a warranty. Then spend the rest of the money on something your really want.

And this is not just my opinion.
It is a fact of life.

However the best thing to do with an eMachine is buy a decent PSU and a stik of RAM and swap them in there and you can't beat the price/performance ratio without spending more cabbage... Quote from: Geek-9pm on October 05, 2009, 12:14:41 PM

Don't bother trying to pirate software if you don't understand the basic concept of a disk image.

Also, take a glance at the forum rules.

To save you the trouble, I'll quote the relevant portion:

Quote
Downloading or using a program (e.g. torrent / P2P program) to download a copyrighted software program, game, movie, song, TV show, book, or any other content protected by copyright laws.

I suggest a easy fix however- buy the game, if possible. Or don't play it. simple.

I don't want to buy GTA 4 myself- I could run it easy. So I instead opt to play GTA3 and San andreas when the fancy strikes me (not often, after all the reformats I keep losing my progress ).

If I may extend my current saying of "computing within your means" it also applies to games- "game within your means". Are you pirating for the sheer thrill of getting something free? Can you simply not afford the game? Some cases have been reported as having been dropped on their heads as children, thus reducing them to decrepit individuals with ambiguous moral alignments and a penchant for blue cheese. Whatever the case, and whatever the situation, pirating software, under any non-ambiguous accepted moral code, is not justifiable.

Why do I say this? What if people cannot afford 200-300 dollar software?

Well they can afford 200/300 dollar computers, can't they? often times people will spend thousands on a new PC build, only to pirate the OS and programs, claiming they cannot afford it. Well, perhaps they should have considered that in their pricing, rather then spending thousands on the hardware and making the questionable declaration that "they can't afford" software. Nonsense.

They pirate because they can, because it's easy. It's also relatively easy to kill a person, few quick slashes, boom. dead. So why don't more people do that and take their wallets instead of downloading software? OH yes, because their moral code says that killing a person isn't "as bad".

And I can sympathesize with the LOGIC. However, what I don't sympathesize with is the attempts at justification for pirating by referencing other crimes. People don't perform a burglarly and then claim, "well, it's not as bad as murder!"... why? because it's obvious that it is not. Relative comparisons can be made that seem to favour almost any argument.

The common justification is that the person "won't buy the program anyway, so it doesn't affect their revenue". Alright. That makes sense, on the surface.

however let us look at a best-selling game, Super MARIO Bros. 3. It sold.. .well, a LOT of copies.(might have been in the 30 million or so range). Now, beind a cartridge based game, and the limited PC technology of the time, it simply wasn't possible to "pirate" the game. (sure you could steal it, but that is conceptually different according to the ambiguous moral code that I am trying to bereft). Now, let's pretend that it was possible to somehow pirate the game. How many of the 30 million or so people who actually ended up buying the game would have pirated it and claimed that they NEVER INTENDED to buy it in the first place? the problem is claims can be made about what a person would have done in a separate situation but without actually being placed in theat situation any conjecture about their response to the situation is pure conjecture and often can be manipulated to suit whatever purpose the conjecture served.

I additionally might add that trying to pirate software blindly- that is, without an idea exactly what your doing- is exactly how people get infected with the nasty viruses. Blind trust in an unknown entity that is giving you that 400kb Call of Duty ZIP file that is "super compressed" and blindly allowing UAC to continue when the enclosed EXE requires admin permissions.

hmm, well that was an interesting rant.uhm yea *censored* must i do with this..

why are you so crying? it's fun to download games and maiby i can't afford a game now so shut your mouth about that and give me some advice to open a data3.cab file stpid ashle! Bye bye.

Very true. Try closing the forum for a bit, it might make him move to a new one to post his nasty’s.Yeah, punish all the innocent users - close the forum for a while.   Good point Aegis...Or make it so all new users have to post a legitimate post in a "sandbox"/welcome section before they post in (or even see for that matter), the rest of the forum. Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be a lot easier to temporarily disable images?  Instead of adding all of these features to complicate things for regular users and make them jump through hoops, just disable this feature until things calm down.  And instead of deleting whatever new accounts this kid keeps making, just change the privileges of his account so that he can view the forum and make new posts, but nobody else will be able to see anything he says.  Because his account stays active, he won't have to keep making new ones.  And he can do whatever he wants (until he eventually gets BORED) and nobody else will have to see or deal with him.  It's a fairly common method of phasing out those persistent trolls who keep coming back.A funny one. Does the power supply have a light and if so does it light up? etc.had some kind of VIRUS or worm was getting ready to do a system restore.a message came on saying something like windows DEFENDER fouund PROBLIM with something,i CANT remember after it finished it said it must restart windows ,and it wont come back on the power light is on but screen is blank .

I really don't understand why some people are so reluctant to provide everything right up front. Well, then again maybe I do  thanks no need to b so rude some of usare dum!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!You're absolutely right - there is no reason to be rude. It does get old after a while though, and we were just having a little fun - unfortunately it was at your expense and I do apologize for that. And i apologise as well...
However we are going to need alot more info to solve this dilemna...thank you both but i think the hard drive must b fried it wont respond i tried a backup disk and when i put it in it spins and nothing happens i think this a job 4 geek squad! If you choose to spend money on the geek squad i can't tell you what to do...
I will however point out that even most of the part-time helpers on here know more than anyone from the geek squad no matter what books they don't study...

Why don't you read this first and pay particular attention to the following:

You cannot GIVE too much information. about the system. Withholding information seldom solves a problem quickly, if at all. Please don't expect us to drag information out of YOU to solve YOUR problem.

If you contract with the Geek Squad, expect to pay $200, just to tell you what's wrong.

Solve : Spare software needed?

Answer»

Hi, I am a SOFTWARE broker looking for any spare software anyone has lying round the office. MUST be 100% genuine (no fake VERSIONS), new and UK/European versions. My apologies if this message is a bit SPAMMY but I'm looking for stock to sell and I'm sure that some of you have a few bits and pieces lying around you could make a bit of cash out of.

[Email Address Removed]Sorry mate, but we don't do that here.Computer Power USERS [CPU] forums have a buy/sell forum. I think you have to be a subscriber to one of their mags - CPU, Smart Computing, and there are some others - to join the forums. They do have a cheaper online subscription that gives you access to all articles and forums without receiving the print magazine. I haven't read the rules for the buy/sell forum, but you could check it out.

It is a good idea to "recycle" software and hardware. I sure bought a lot of software I never used - outdated now. Software is just so tricky because of that ability to make copies.I've often found that spamming forums makes people look upon the advertised site with a frown rather then a smile. However, carry on with your pitiful ATTEMPTS.

Solve : copying files in gui?

Answer»

Is there a limit to how large a file can be when using the Windows GUI to copy files from one drive to another?  If files are too large, are you suppose to use the command prompt? If you are using a drive that uses the FAT file system there is a 4GB limit. Most flash drives and external hard drives use the FAT.

What are you trying to accomplish?   ..not trying to accomplish anything other than obtaining info.

Someone posted a problem a while ago and they were having a problem transferring files to and from a drive, and they thought it may be because the files were too large.  I don't REMEMBER the exact context of the thread but for some reason I just started thinking about it.

Can the 4 GB limit in FAT be circumvented by using a command prompt to transfer? Quote from: EEVIAC on OCTOBER 05, 2009, 11:00:28 PM

Nope. It's a Filesystem limitation. Doesn't matter how you copy.

I might add that the limit is actually 4GB minus 1 byte. With FAT32 the volume limit is 2TB, IIRC, and FAT is limited to 2GB, since the cluster size is limited to 32K and the 16-bit limit means that there can only be a certain number of clusters on a partition. (NT4 actually supported 64K clusters, which was definitely strange). Therefore a file larger then 4GB simply cannot exist at all on either FAT or FAT32.

But back to the original query.

There is no Artificial limit set by the File copy shell. However, there are issues with buffer size/copying ETC. with Vista RTM, I believe.Well thx for all the info..

I found more info. on this subject here.hey, I may not be thinking like you are, or being SPECIFIC, but if you check to see how large the files are --for instance bytes, kbytes, or mbytes it is easier to estimate whether there is room there. Also since the harddrive goes like from 2GB and up well there you go, you figure.

Solve : SATA Hard Drive Installation Problem?

Answer»

Allan.... Agreed BUT it's not there or anywhere else except in Device manager and CMOS.Joe - I BELIEVE you, don't get me wrong. But could you possibly post a screen shot of Disk Management? At the bottom - Disk 1 unknown & UNALLOCATED. That's your new drive. Right click on it and FORMAT it.Bingo ! !Oh boy, color me stupid. I kept looking at that, staring right at the indicated "drive 1" designation, knowing full well that my "C" drive was "drive 0" but the meaning of it all never dawned on me. All I could think of was that I certainly didn't want to chance messing up my "C" drive.

Just had a back operation and apparently the pain pills are affecting my thoughts, logic, whatever. Hard to believe that I looked right thru that. Well, you know what Red Forman calls his son Eric!(grin)

I truly appreciate you fellows sticking with me throughout this problem. It looks like all is well now as the SATA 80GB drive is showing up listed as my new "D" drive. Thanks again.
You're welcome.Good News INDEED Joe...
Best of luck with the medical condition and STOP by anytime !

Solve : Age is a problem for computers?

Answer»

While my laptop is being claimed under warranty i've had to temporarily use my old desktop... its not running very well... it must be said. Any ideas for fixing any of the following?
-The usb ports will not function while any keyboard is plugged into the computer. After you have used the usb ports and you have reconnected the keyboard, you may need to restart. This, I suspect, is to do with the PSU not supplying enough power.
-The power key will not function NORMALLY on the computer if it has been unplugged from power since the last use (ie if you PULLED the plug on it last time). It will only turn on if you hold the switch down for at least three minutes.
-On every start, the computer will declare it needs to check its disks. If you allow this, upon windows starting, the keyboard and mouse will not work. If you use the power key to shut it down, the computer will only go into standby and freeze, and may only be brought out of this by pulling the plug.
-The internet will work only three out of every four starts. On the other start it will declare the ethernet card has no driver. Fix this by restarting normally.
-On one out of every five starts it will declare windows corrupt. Fix this by pulling the plug and restarting.
-On one out of every ten starts it will pretend it has no video card. Fix this by pulling the plug, as the power key is also ignored.
-The master volume control does nothing. Control volume levels with the "wave" slider.
-Every now and then the computer will stop accepting keyboard/mouse input, and the power key is ignored. Fix this by pulling the plug.
Dang... that thing sounds screwed up...

1) Replace CMOS BATTERY
2) Assume HDD is dying
3) PSU going badWouldn't the computer have to run setup each time you STARTED it if the CMOS battery was DEAD? I had a computer with a defunct CMOS battery and I had to go through the setup each time i started it. This computer never forgets the hard drive, it just thinks its dead every now and then

Solve : virus warning , is it true?

Answer»

THIS IS NO JOKE - IT WAS REPORTED ON BRITISH TELEVISION LAST NIGHT WITH A WARNING, SO PLEASE TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.

IF A PERSON CALLED SIMON ASHTON ([email protected]  )  CONTACTS YOU THROUGH EMAIL, DON'T OPEN THE MESSAGE. DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY BECAUSE HE IS A HACKER!!

TELL EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST BECAUSE IF SOMEBODY ON YOUR LIST ADDS
HIM THEN YOU WILL GET HIM ON YOUR LIST. HE WILL FIGURE OUT YOUR ID AND
COMPUTER ADDRESS, SO COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE EVEN IF YOU DONT KNOW THEM THAT WELL - AND FAST BECAUSE IF HE HACKS THEIR EMAIL HE HACKS YOUR MAIL TOO!!!!!...

Anyone-using Internet mail such as YAHOO, Hotmail, AOL, Googlemail and so on is VULNERABLE. This information arrived this morning, direct from both Microsoft and Norton. Please send it to everybody you know who has access to the Internet. You may receive an apparently harmless e-mail titled 'Mail Server Report’. If you open either file, a message will appear on your screen saying: ‘It is too late now, your life is no longer beautiful.'

Subsequently, you will LOSE EVERYTHING IN YOUR PC, and the person who sent it to you will gain access to your name, e-mail and password.

This is a new VIRUS which started to circulate on Saturday afternoon. AOL has already confirmed the severity, and the anti-virus software's are not capable of destroying it.

The virus has been created by a hacker who calls himself  'life owner'.

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/simon25-hacker-hoax.shtmlso its a hoax  I didn't even have to read the whole thing to know its obviously fake. If you ever get an e-mail warning about a virus (especially if it's in all caps), there's a 99% chance that it's fake.

umm... No.

It was neither 20 or 40 years ago, because itr doesn't exist.

At least, not unless you can provide a source.

No  source needed. This is done in the industry, but it is not widely used so as to become a popular item. A t Flash memory can be kinds or even hybrid. One that is "fused" one time and the other that can be programmed again. We used to call this a PROM it it was one time only, or EPROM if you could do it again and EEPROM if it was very easy to do. and I used to do this stuff about 30 years ago. It is now called embedded programming. We used to call it just programming. I wrote some of my won loaders and BIOS stuff for the primitive systems we used years ago. Sorry about my bad spelling, At seventy years of age I can barely see the screen.

Edit :The term "Flash" is now only  for a new type of EEPROM that has high speed write and erase cycles.  Anyway, you can make a BUIS out of PROM, if you wantr to.hehehe What would be the point in doing that? If you were to manufacture a PROM with the password burned into the chip then the end user could not create a unique password that only he knows. It would defeat the whole purpose of using a password in the first place.

yeah... it's not "flash" RAM in the current sense of the term.

And Since ALL PC Bios's up to the mid 486-era were unchangable ROM chips you couldn't change anything on them.

I guess the suggestion is that you mail order a special chip for your password?

And like jj says here... the idea of a password is to be user-specific. if it's explained in the manual it's a waste of time. We're talking about passwords here, not the ROM BIOS, or the type of chip used to store it. passwords are stored in NVRAM along with the other configuration information, not on the ROM chip, so discussion of the ROM chip is irrelevant.

"but that makes it easy to wipe, just remove the battery"! you say.

Not really. it IS possible to get case locks or alarms that go off if the case is opened. The fact is denying physical access to something has been practiced FAR longer then for IT, and is a number of times better then simply putting on a password and forgetting about it.

Heck if somebody was really that hard-up on security they may as well simply not connect to the internet and make sure the ENTIRE thing is disassembled when not being used, and locked into different lockers with different keys, and the locks are changed daily. This will protect people from real threats as well as the imagined ones. the latter being more prevalent and the former being more or less imagined.yeah your right.. its better to create one account and put password.. but still its not safe coz i know that there's still i way to hack a login password.. and i my self tried it.. the only thing left in my head is to use the bios password.. I don't know if there's a program that can remove a bios password, only two things i know to remove password in bios and that by removing the cmos battery and changing the jumper.. You know of a way to get into a password protected computer without using the guest account anywho try a hidden account so they need a name and password i don't think you can bypass the name

Ok i'm confused know i want on youtube to look at some things anywho i ran into a problem

look at this

ok you see the enable boot logging well i did that and there was a guest account but  in safe mode and normal mode there wasn't i thought i deleted it why is it there when i use boot logging

i would wish to get rid of my guest account
and what is a net user in command promted is there anyway to disable it it sounds like that makes a guest account

Reset forgotten or expired password
If you forget your password or if your password expires, there are two methods that you can use to log on to create a new password. One method is to use a password reset disk, if you have created one. By using the password reset disk, you can recover your user account and your personalized computer settings. Another method is to log on using the administrator account to delete the forgotten password and then to create a new password.

If you have a password reset disk, go to method 1. If you do not have a reset disk, go to method 2. The instructions guide you through each step and help you verify that the problem is resolved.

NOTE If you are using Windows XP Home Edition, you may want to try the steps in the following article before you try the steps in this article:
894900  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/894900/ ) Forgotten your Windows XP Home Edition password? - PART 1: Introduction
Method 1: Use a password reset disk
To log on to the computer by using a password reset disk, follow these steps. If your computer is or was a member of a domain, go to the "Windows XP Professional in a domain" section and follow those steps.
Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional

   1. Restart the computer.
   2. On the Windows XP logon screen, click the user name that you want to use, and then press ENTER.

Note You receive the following error message:

   4. In the Password Reset Wizard dialog box, click Next.
   5. Insert the password reset disc into the CD drive, and then click Next.
   6. Type a new password in the Type a new password box, and then type the password again in the Type the password again to confirm box.
   7. In the Type a new password hint box, type a hint for the password, and then click Next.
   8. Click Finish, and then try to log on to Windows XP again.

If you were able to reset your password and are now able to log on successfully, you have resolved the issue, and you are finished. If you are still unable to log on, try method 2.

Solve : NOTEBOOK OR LAPTOP ??????????

Answer»

IM CURRENTLY IN A DILEMA WHETHER TO BUY A LAPTOP OR A NOTEBOOK FOR MY 7 YEAR OLD.SHE WILL PROBABLY ONLY USE IT FOR WATCHING MOVIES,LISTENING TO MUSIC AND PLAYING GAMES.CAN U HELP ME AS IM NOT THAT WELL INFORMED ABOUT WHATS WHAT & HOW THEY WORK.THANX,HEPYBOY Please turn your CAPS LOCK off.  Laptops and notebooks are basically the same, or at least some manufacturers do not make a clear distinction. My Compaq "notebook" really fits the definition of laptops given at http://whitecapcomputer.com/newsletter/articles/notebook_vs_laptop.htm.  Anyway, take a look at that link and see whether you really want to phrase your question as "NOTEBOOK OR LAPTOP ?", or maybe portable vs. desktop?

I think I'd be inclined to choose a desktop (this term is somewhat mis-leading; it really means a full size computer which is OFTEN sitting on the floor, not on the desktop) for a 7 year old.  I'd be afraid of them dropping a notebook or laptop and damaging the computer.

Of course, a desktop takes up more space.  Is that an issue?  i already have a desktopNevertheless, based on what I said, are you sure you want a portable for her?its what she wants,i just dont know what to expect from a note book,ie how many films ect is it capable of handlingWell, if you anticipate movies and/or music being stored on the hard drive, she'll need a fairly LARGE hard drive. Would help to know what your budget is for this.  But, fortunately, even some of the budget priced laptops and notebooks now have 250GB hard drives.  For example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834146581  By the way, that one is a very good deal now, with the $150 discount and free shipping.

EDIT: to add "and/or music" in first sentence.my budget is about £300Oh, you're in the UK? In that case, you won't be able to order from newegg.com.  I'm not familiar with your options for source of purchase in the UK.  But, since 300.00 GBP =
476.479 USD, I was in the right PRICE range.

Are you familiar with sellers in the UK?  Some of our members are in the UK, so someone may be able to suggest a seller.

Solve : external enclosures for notebook hard drives?

Answer»

hi i'm new to this site and computers so take it easy on me

my problem is i borrowed a friends compaq presario laptop a few months back. when i plugged it in it started smoking out the back and sparked. i disconnected it and a few days later tried again, there was nothing.

my friends not bothered about the actual computer as he was getting a new one from work, he did however want some of the info off of the hard drive. i got in touch with compaq and they said all i had to do was remove the hard drive and then connect it to an IDE? cable with a 2.5" adaptor and then i COULD connect it to a desktop pc.

i took a trip to pc world who informed me that adaptors are hard to come by and to use an external enclosure that PLUGS into a usb port. i took it home but now i keep getting the message that the device cannot start followed by code 10.

as i say im new to computers and thought that it must mean that the hard drive is dead, one of my colleagues however told me that the hard drive should be fine as any problem i had with the laptop would only affect the motherboard.

i have no idea what to do and pc world wont give me any information now and have told me not to bother taking the enclosure back to them because they know i have used it

is there anybody who can shed some light on whether the hard drive could be/ will be dead, and if not if there is anything i can do with either the enclosure or another device to get the info off of the hard drive for my mate

i hope you can help me out

gazIt certainly could be dead, especially if smoke was involved and we don't know where. If the drive cannot be accessed with an adapter I would not throw too much more money after it. Are you sure it was set up correctly in the enclosure?yes everything was setup right, i even took it apart and set it up again to make sure.

when the laptop was smoking it was coming out of the fan on the back. i told my friend that id killed his computer and when he looked at it he plugged it in but said the pin heats up whenever a charge GOES through it.

thats why he thought the motherboard would be dead. i keep being told that the hard drive should be ok though  but nothing definate. ive tried speaking to compaq, microsoft and pc world to FIND out what could be causing  a code 10 fault but with no luckBelow is what you need.It doesn't involve USB.

You should know to JUMPER the drive to Slave.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16812119020thats what i was originally looking for but was told that the adaptors are hard to come byIt depends where you look. Just because they did not have it does not mean it is difficult to get for you.

Solve : All Unread Topics?

Answer»

When you click on "UNREAD posts" and you ACTUALLY visited the board in the past, but you didn't check for unread posts, not all unread posts will be displayed. You need to click on "All Unread Topics" to refresh the listing.
Would it be POSSIBLE to move "All Unread Topics" to the top of the table, instead of it being at the bottom?
It'd save on SCROLLING down.

The other QUESTION neelchauhan should have asked is, "If you're not using multiple monitors now, have you ever used multiple monitors?  It would make responses such as those quoted above more meaningful on point #3. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on October 13, 2009, 11:20:00 AM
I attached a picture of my current setup at this very moment.

I usually have a dual desktop setup with the laptop on the right but the laptop on the left is currently connected to the external monitor.
Looks messy, but it totally isn't.
Your setup is very easy to get. I tried it with a laptop and a monitor. I want to do it on a desktop with a nVidia or ATI graphics card because of two outputs & better video editing. What was the question again ? ? Quote
Your setup is very easy to get.
That's why I have it.My card is dual-headed but my only other monitor is an old CRT that maxes out at 800x600... and I can't fit them on my desk anyway.

I have used multiple monitors but it was a TEMPORARY thing, just to see if I could... I think I did it with my Radeon 7000, which was Dual-headed.
