Solve : Little Endian Conversion? |
|
Answer» I'm trying to learn how to convert Little Endian single string floating point to decimal. Everything i have FOUND on the internet just points towards using programs, but i need to do it using maths with no calculator.
For example - To convert 10 B1 07 B4 to decimal To Big Endian = B4 07 B1 10 Into binary = 10110100000001111011000100010000 Into decimal = 3020402960 move decimal point = 3.020402960 x 10^9 Is it a simple as that?? Can anyone confirm this for me?? Feel free to ignore my above post, it's ABSOLUTELY rubbish and i'm talking utter twaddle!!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Endianness Quote Well-known processors that use the big-endian format include MotorolaIntel based systems use the little kind. The base address has the lower part of a number. But floating point has its own rules. You need to understand fully the loading point stuff. Which kind? Quote The term floating point refers to the fact that the radix point (decimal point, or, more commonly in computers, binary point) can "float"; that is, it can be placed anywhere relative to the significant digits of the number. This position is indicated separately in the INTERNAL representation, and floating-point representation can thus be thought of as a computer realization of scientific notation. Over the years, several different floating-point representations have been used in computers; however, for the last ten years the most commonly encountered representation is that defined by the IEEE 754 Standard.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Floating_point Feel free to ignore my above post, it's absolutely rubbish and i'm talking utter twaddle!! Thanks, but i dont really need to know the 'whys and where fors' for my forth coming test. I just want to know how to work it out, a formula, but i think i've cracked it. I just stupidly over looked the obvious. A few days ago a learnt how to convert decimal to Little Endian, all i had to do basically was the same in reverse. I think the answer to - To convert 10 B1 07 B4 to decimal is 1.263727e7 Just need practice. Update: Passed Test One - 85%Will you share the answers with us? (Just asking.) CANT remember the questions to be honest! There was some binary addition, twos compliment, logic gates and truth tables, hex addition, octal addition, converting binary to hex and to dec and VICE versa. It was easier than i thought. Just shows that you can't beat revision and preparation. |

Solve : Watch out for 'Microsoft Tech Support' scams? |
|
Answer» This is quite a long read and many of you may have heard about or read this ,but just in case there are some that haven't here goes. This is a direct copy and paste. overthehill Watch out for 'Microsoft Tech Support' scams By Woody LEONHARD "I'm from Microsoft and I'm here to help." At least, that's what reader MP thought he heard when he answered the phone. It wasn't. Con artists all over the world are bilking big bucks out of unsuspecting Microsoft customers — including savvy Windows users. In this new epidemic, the scammers are sophisticated, glib, and oh-so-convincing. Know the warning signs. You may be next. Inside one con that almost succeeded Here's how MP describes his experience: "I was having a problem with Windows XP and posted an inquiry on one of the [presumed to be] Microsoft support sites. My wife received a call from someone wanting to talk to me about my computer. She gave a time when I would be home. I was expecting a call from my ISP. The call came at the arranged time, but it was not the ISP. The caller said he was working on behalf of Microsoft and directed me to a very convincing website for confirmation of his company and his credentials. The caller knew my name and telephone number. "We talked about the problems I've been having with Windows XP. He said it sounded like a virus. He guided me into Windows XP's Event Viewer and showed me a number of red and yellow flags for applications and systems, which he said were indicative of a malware attack. "He offered to get a technician to sort the problem for free and directed me to a website, where I had to enter some contact information and my Windows activation code, from the sticker on my PC. He talked me through the process — we were on the phone for almost an hour at that point — and it all went smoothly until I had to enter some sort of warranty code that I didn't have. He told me to hang on while he checked with his boss. "A few minutes later, he was back and gave me the unfortunate news that my free support period had ended. He told me I would have to pay $99 for extended support and directed me to a place on the website to enter my credit card information. I'm not sure why, but I smelled a rat, so I hung up on him. "The caller knew what he was talking about, knew my name and phone number, knew that I was running Windows XP, and knew that I was having problems. I'm a professional electrical engineer and fully aware of phishing and other scams, but I was nearly taken in." MP sent me the address of the site the caller used for a reference. I won't repeat it here because, to this day, I'm not sure whether it's a legitimate consulting firm site or whether it exists only to provide a backstory for swindlers. The website certainly had an air of LEGITIMACY. It identified the caller's company as a "Microsoft Registered Partner" with an official Microsoft logo. "This company is a Technical Support Provider," the site says. "As computers have become more popular and sophisticated, the job of keeping them running has fallen to an ever-expanding group of specialists, collectively known as Solution Engineers." The site went on to say, "The first point of contact is generally the manufacturer's tech support. However, as manufacturers and others scale back on in-house technical support to control costs, innovative and entrepreneurial technical support companies are building a robust business of providing help and a sense of security to consumers." Then I noticed that the site's mailing address is in Kolkata and the domain is registered in Jharkhand, India — a long, long way from MP's stomping grounds. Robust? You could call it that. Be aware of tricks of the con artist's trade I wish MP's story were unique, but it isn't. How in the world did the con artist take him in? It's easier than you think. In MP's case, it's possible that somebody milked his name from a Microsoft tech-support site and looked him up in a phone book. But it's far more likely that the con artist simply called phone numbers randomly. Think about it. If you called 100 people and told them (with a ring of friendly authority in your voice) that you were from Microsoft and wanted to help them with the PC problem they reported, what percentage would take you up on the offer? I'd guess it's at least 10%. Tricking users such as MP (or his wife) into revealing names or PC problems is a con artist's stock in trade: if you aren't immediately suspicious, casual banter will often reveal a wealth of personal information. For example, it can take a scammer all of five seconds to find out whether you're using Windows XP or Win7: "Do you see the big circle in the lower-left corner? Oh, sorry, I meant do you see the word 'Start' in the lower-left corner?" Everybody's Event Viewer has red and yellow flags. Check yours right now and you'll see them: Windows XP: Click Start, Control Panel, Performance and Maintenance, Administrative Tools; then double-click Computer Management. Vista: Do the same, except for the final step. Double-click Event Viewer instead. Win7: Click Start, type Event, click Event Viewer. On the left of the Event Viewer window, expand the Windows Logs/System branch. See the ocean of colored flags? They're mostly harmless, although they look ALARMING — which is why Windows makes it difficult to find them. It's good fodder for a flim flam. The website used for establishing the caller's credentials may be completely legit — or maybe not — it's very, very hard to tell. Anybody can become a Microsoft Partner; it TAKES maybe two minutes, and all you need is a Hotmail account or other Windows Live ID. (Don't believe it? Go to the Microsoft Partner Network site and fill out the forms.) As for the "Technical Support Provider" claim on the website — the term has no official meaning, as far as I can tell. The site's owners may be guilty of puffery, but that's a widespread defect among consultancies. The fact that the site's based in India, and MP lives halfway around the world from there, isn't a definitive sign — but it certainly doesn't inspire confidence. Although Microsoft has tech support offices overseas, it's a stretch to think that an overseas Microsoft affiliate would be assigned to follow up on a tech support issue on the other side of the planet. Is the site legit? I don't know. The overwhelming con give-away — the big red flag — in all of this? Microsoft doesn't work that way. Think about it. Microsoft isn't going to call you to solve your problems unless you've received a very specific commitment from a very specific individual within Microsoft — a commitment that often comes only after repeated phone calls on your part, generally accompanied by complaint elevation to second- or third-level support engineers. Microsoft typically doesn't respond to random online requests for help by calling a customer and spending a lot of time with them. Sorry, it just doesn't happen. What to do if you think you're being scammed You think you're on the receiving end of a Microsoft Tech Support scam phone call? If you aren't sure whether you're being conned, ask the person on the other end of the line for your Microsoft Support Case tracking number — every MS tech support interaction has a tracking number or Support ID. Then ask for a phone number and offer to call your caller back. Con artists won't LEAVE trails. If you think a con is being run from overseas — much more common in these days of nearly-free VoIP cold-calling — your chances of nailing the perpetrator slide from extremely slim to none. It's prudent to be suspicious of any Microsoft expert who doesn't seem to be calling from your country. Whatever happens, don't give a stranger with unverifiable credentials full access to your computer. I see reports of people who were talked into setting up a Remote Desktop connection, allowing the ersatz expert unfettered permission to download and install any program that suited his criminal fancy. If that has happened to you, my best advice is to restore a complete backup of your PC made before the call or completely reinstall Windows. If you believe you're being conned, get all the information you possibly can. Then, immediately after you end the conversation, call the police. Be sure you keep records (or use your browser's Back button) to keep track of the websites you've visited, and offer that information to the authorities. If you've already been conned — you've given out personal information or a credit-card number — start by contacting your bank or the credit-card issuing company and follow the identity-theft reporting procedures. Now you know. Warn your friends. Thanks for posting that. It's something about which those of us who are aware should spread the word. Here's some good advice from Microsoft: Avoid scams that use the Microsoft name fraudulently I believe I heard about this somewhere. they are just your standard phishing scams; the fact that he was experiencing problems was pure coincidence; and the event viewer messages are informational and warning messages that always appear there. They just phone at random. There is no "search for information" as is implied there. It's still something to watch for. Personally if they phoned me I would mess with them. scammer: you have malware, I can help you remove it me: OH NO! I knew this would happen.... should I give the dog a flea bath? scammer: um... no, I just need you to go start->Run, and enter eventvwr and press enter me:OH GOD! Solve : PCTV HD Pro Stick? |

Answer» I've been trying to hook it up with my CABLE. I have verizon fios. I tried unhooking the coaxial cable from the tv and plugging it into the tuner. But with both windows media center and with pctvs program it says it can't find any channels. I have an extra composite video slot, but there is no where for the stereo audio output to plug into and I don't currently have an s-video cable so I don't know if that would work. Pctvs program seems stuck at saying "initializing tv hardware" no MATTER what settings are on. Am I doing something wrong. I've checked and as far as I can tell the drivers are up to date. So I am completely lost. I bought an S-video cable and hooked it to the cable box and I can now watch shows on my computer BUT, there is no sound. Any ideas?s-video is just video only, you will need separate audio cables for sound.okay i found in the manuel where it says to "3. Connect the stereo audio outputs of your set-top box with the stereo input (3.5mm headphone jack) of the adapter cable." Where would that be on the back of the cable box? I have 2 sets composite jacks, IR receiver input, one marked "RESERVED", digital audio, and optical audio. Solve : email - can you block owners?? |
|
Answer» Like many people, I block email addresses and domains to try to reduce the AMOUNT of spam delivered to my email account. I notice that many unwanted emails still get through because the senders regularly CHANGE the domain name. I decided to check one of these domain names and used the 'Whois' site to find 'Whistleresist.net', the latest used by a recurring spammer. It showed that 'customer service' owned 7174 domain names and that the domain had changed name servers 7 times over 2 YEARS. I suspect that this is a company providing easy access to SPAMMERS to different domain names to help them defeat email filtering and allow them to get through. Is there any record of the owner of a domain included in emails? If you could block the owner, you could block a NUMBER of unwanted emails in one go. |

Solve : Leagal? Free Product Keys? |

If you are looking Microsoft office 2010 Product keys then you are in the right place.Previously i posted on Microsoft office 2007 product key.You may use one of the following product keys to activate your Microsoft Office 2010 Beta products. Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2010, Microsoft Project Professional 2010, and Microsoft Visio Premium 2010 require separate activations. Some who ere gamers may reason that using a hack or crack to play a video game is OK, yet would not dare hack or crack a professional product, such as MS Office. Why is it different? If it is not legal, why was I able to find it? And even WOT did not mark it as bad. How would it POSSIBLY be legal? Moderator: Remove this post if you like. The question is about the legality. This is not a recommendation. That is why the link is not given. As long as you don't post a link to the SITE it's fine. And if you look hard enough you can find a "crack" or "key" or ILLEGAL download for almost anything (not to mention the likelihood of an infected file to go with it). Solve : Do I need a new hard-drive?? |
|
Answer» My daughter-in-law has a Dell Dimention E520 computer, she was saying it's beginning to run very very slow. Her hard drive saids it has 64.4 GB CAPACITY, she's using 48.4 GB with only 16.0 GB of free space, or 20% free space left, is she going to need a new hard-drive? Windows XP with 512MB RAM? Will run better with 1GB RAM. 2- 3 GB would be even better!!Ok, I'll check it with Advanced SystemCare and post the results.... As far as her hard drive only having 20% of free space left, would this make her pc run super slow, and what about having 86 programs running, is that about normal? Thanks...........I would say 86 programs is NOT normal. You need to go through the pc and uninstall a whole bunch of programs or reinstall the operating system altogether (better option). To uninstall unused programs, go to Control Panel and open "Add/Remove Programs". Go through the list and uninstall programs that you know you don't use. Be careful not to uninstall necessary programs, though. If in doubt, give us a shout. If you think you want to tackle reinstalling the operating system, let us know. It's a bit more involved. You could also check preference settings in some of those programs. If these are programs that automatically start when the computer is started, they may have a setting to not start when Windows starts. For example, I have Yahoo! Messenger installed but I have it set to not start when Windows starts. I don't often use it, so there's no reason to have it starting with Windows starts. I can just start it when needed. Quote from: mark227 on February 04, 2011, 05:20:20 AM As far as her hard drive only having 20% of free space left, would this make her pc run super slow, ...No, 20% should not make it run super slow. But, it's getting to the point where free space needs to be monitored. Getting down to 15% and lower can have a slowing EFFECT. A larger hard drive is not necessary if free space can be maintained at about the present level or greater.I'm hoping they mean 86 processes...not programs.86 processes seems excessive, especially with 512MB RAM. No wonder it's running so slowly.Go to Cruical and use their memory scan to tell you what you have now, and what upgrades are available. http://www.crucial.com They have good prices and service, but even if you don't buy from them it's a good starting point. I'm guessing you have two 256MB memory sticks. If you replace even just one of them with a 1GB memory stick, for a TOTAL of 1.2 GB, you will see a noticeable performance improvement. Back in the old days when hard drives were much smaller than today's, and space was tight, it was a standard routine to check your hard drive often for unused programs and get rid of them to free up space. It's something you need to do on a regular basis since you are getting low on free space. It's either that or get a bigger hard drive. I also should add that if your free space goes below 15% (it's not a hard fast number) you will have a problem defragging. We brought the computer to a repair shop and the the guy said we needed to expand the ram, he put in two GB of ram and tuned it up. He took off our CCleaner, Malwarebytes, and our anti virus software Microsoft Security Essentials. He said having these things on your computer could harm it so he installed a diffrent anti virus software and charged us $50 extra dollars. The last shop we had the computer in said there was nothing WRONG with having these programs on and it was good to run Microsoft Security Essentials at least once a week. Is Microsoft Essentials good to have for anti virus protection, and is it alright to run the CCleaner and Malwarebytes in case of a computer threat? Is this guy just try to make extra money off us or what, can anyone help us out? Thanks..... Quote Is this guy just try to make extra money off us...Sure looks that way to me. The previous shop was right and this guy was wrong. I used Microsoft Security Essentials for awhile on my Windows XP system which only has 512MB of RAM and noticed it sometimes used a lot of memory. Since the computer only has 512MB of RAM, I decided to remove Microsoft Security Essentials and install avast! Antivirus. With 2GB of RAM, I see no reason to have removed Microsoft Security Essentials. How is your computer running now? What antivirus program did the guy install? Answer» There is a site that has old radio shows, but they are .ram and require real player. I want to use winamp because it is most compatible with my ipod. I can't find any PROGRAM (free) that lets me convert the ram files to mp3 or something. Any help would be appreciated. I run xp with firefox. Thanks.http://www.tutorialsroom.com/tutorials/av/convert_ram_to_mp3.htmlThanks for the response. I downloaded Super which seems to be a great program. I put the ram in there and set it for mp3. It said the file was invalid. Thanks anyway. Quote from: ron2 on February 20, 2011, 04:35:37 AM Thanks for the response. I downloaded Super which seems to be a great program. I put the ram in there and set it for mp3. It said the file was invalid. Thanks anyway. Sometimes the links on that type of site don't LEAD directly to the ram file itself, but to some kind of script so that you can play it in a browser. If you right click the LINK you can do "save as" but what you get is not a .ram file. Maybe if you gave me a link? http://www.otr.net/ This is the link and maybe you can help.OK I did a bit of checking and I think I've got it clear. A ram file is not an Real Player audio file. (That's a .RA file) It is a text file. When a browser receives this file, it launches Real Player as a helper application. Then the web site "streams" the audio data to Real Player which decodes it and plays it through your computer sound card and speakers. So you can't get an mp3 because they have copyright. I was afraid it might be something like that. I guess the guy doesn't know if the shows are public domain so he doesn't want you to download them. I really appreciate your help. Quote from: ron2 on February 20, 2011, 05:10:52 AM I was afraid it might be something like that. I guess the guy doesn't know if the shows are public domain so he doesn't want you to download them. I really appreciate your help. You can use the free VLC media Player to convert ram audio to mp3. If it is public domain!!!!!!!!! I hope I made that quite clear. Because we would not want you breaching copyright. I did make that clear, didn't I? 1. Open the ram file in a text editor such as Notepad. 2. look for an embedded string starting rtsp:// and ending .rm example rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm - An interesting show.rm?title="Real Interesting"&author="Salmon Trout"©right="Fish Locomotive" Cut out the bit starting rtsp and ending .rm In this example rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm - An interesting show.rm Now replace EVERY space with %20 rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm%20-%20An%20interesting%20show.rm Copy this to your clipboard Now start VLC Media Player and select "Media" -> "Convert/Save" -> "Network" Where it says "Please insert a network URL", in that box paste in the string you copied At the bottom of the window choose "Convert/save" dropdown, choose "Convert" Now in "Profile" dropdown choose "mp3" Supply "Destination File" details and click "Start" & wait the same time as the length of the show. This is just an outline for you to fool around with. There are loads of resources on the web about capturing audio streams Thanks . I'll play around with your suggestion. One thing I just remembered. Awhile back I remember saving the file and using my media player to get it and there was an option to save target as, and it converted to mp3. Have since reformatted and now my media player doesn't give me that option. It doesn't recognize the file. Strange. |

Answer» Foxconn Installs Anti-Suicide Nets at Its Facilities http://www.dailytech.com/Foxconn+Installs+AntiSuicide+Nets+at+Its+Facilities/article18877.htmIt won't work...As to the specific Chinese company involved here i had addressed precisely this issue a long time ago in a CH forum THREAD. "Most U.S. manufacturers turn a blind eye to these kind of issues in China. However, after much criticism Apple has taken to conducting YEARLY working condition studies. Its latest one showed a variety of problems including overworked, underpaid employees, and the use of child labor. In the wake of these problems Apple and other U.S. firms have shown some signs that they're looking to adopt firmer stances with their suppliers to reduce these kinds of problems." I shall not make further comment as i believe the underlying issue is clearly EVIDENT. truenorthMeanwhile Apple's purchases were about the same or bigger since this pooh=pooh announcement....so NOTHING has changed.Exactly my point PATIO,truenorthThe old saying that actions speak louder than words has yet to surface here... |

Solve : no log out option in msn games? |
|
Answer» They are both part of the same thing, it's all msn. If you sign in with MESSENGER then thats how you sign out. If you sign out with messenger and when you re-open your browser, you're still signed out. Then i don't understand the problem!!picture above shows how i sign in, and does anyone else believe they are the same sign in and sign out?ok, click on the messenger button and sign out, click back and I'm still signed into msn gamesSo, let me get this RIGHT, you're signing out using messenger then you click on the 'return to the previous page' arrow and you're still signed in!! What do you expect to happen??from the START I sign into msn games from the msn games homepage. I want to sign out but there isn't any buttom, option, etc. to do that. Clicking on the messenger button was suggested. I do that. Then I click the backward arrow in my browser and I'm still connected to msn games. Hope that is clear. How to sign out?? Sign out and do not click on the 'backward arrow', that will return you to the 'previous' page where you were signed in Have you tried, signing out with messenger, CLOSE the browser, open it again, go to msn games, are you still signed in. I bet you aren't!I did not follow all the way thru. Signed out with the messenger option. Clicked back and saw I was still signed in BUT then I tried to surf and sure enough I was asked to sign in. THANK you very much. SOLVED |

Solve : Talk Show Host - Radio Head Instrumental? |

Answer» Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 21, 2011, 11:09:35 AM You really do think the world exists to supply your requirements, don't you? Wow, that was a pretty stupid thing to say. If people didn't require things why would things be made. Apart for the urge to just make money that is. And if you haven't got anything useful to post like this rubbish please don't bother posting at all. Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 21, 2011, 12:17:16 PM haha Ahh right. Quote from: Redcaa on February 22, 2011, 09:36:45 AM Please, you are really one annoying pest. Can't you just shut up and go away? Frankly no one cares about your opinion. So simply just stop posting. He knows what he's talking about. And truly, what he said was perfectly relevant and correct; even complimentary to you, since he assumed you knew what an instrumental really was (since you were talking about it); I however did not assume anything about what you knew or did not know and it appeared that there was some confusion of terms, which I brought forward. As I noted afterwards, and instrumental is a filtered track. It's a completely separate recording created by the same artists (usually the same artists; at any rate it's a completely separate studio recording). So, when you respond "Hopefully that might encourage someone to make it exist." when somebody notes that what you are looking for doesn't exist- in the context of what an instrumental is it is presumptuous; the fact that you are looking for an instrumental (or so you said, you really are just looking for a filtered audio track of the non-instrumental version) and think somebody should make it exist if it doesn't exist implies that you believe the original artists- or really anybody with studio equipment and the willingness to perform the piece- should make it simply because you want one, it is perfectly valid to reply with something like "You really do think the world exists to supply your requirements, don't you?". The only reason I didn't say something to that effect was that I guessed you had no idea what an instrumental really was and may in fact have meant a filtered, "karaokeized" version of the actual track, which takes far less effort (effort that still needs to be done, no less). It was only by chance that I really considered it. In fact, in many ways - and perhaps to his chagrin- Salmon Trout overestimated you, by assuming you knew what you were talking about (what an instrumental was); I on the other hand DOUBTED wether you really knew what it was you were after. With that in mind, the heckling you received ought to be received at least in small part as a compliment. Quote I've tried a few. Audacity didn't turn out too good neither did some of the plugins in it. Centre pan remover? How do I figure out the centre D:Thing is, filtering out the vocals will always remove other portions of the audio, resulting in it not turning out to good; and it hardly ever REMOVES all of the vocals. Actually, TBH a better approach might be to search for a MIDI file of the piece; that will, by definition, be purely instrumental.Or just get the 2nd Deep Purple album...and go from there... |

Solve : file extentions DT2 and ID2? |
Answer» WELL, those who wonder on how to open an unknown file must go to the location of this unknown file, double-click it, and choose Use the Web service to find the correct program option. You will then be guided to the right program. Then, type openwith.org in the ADDRESS bar and PRESS Enter. Click on the blank field beside Search and type in SQL or DOC following the PERIOD in your file name. Press Search and you will be provided with information regarding the programs you can use to open the file. Download and install the program and use it on the unknown file.
Quote...go to the location of this unknown file, double-click it... Seems like that could prove to be a dangerous way of handling unknown file types. I would think a better, safer approach would be to simply plug in the file extension at a dedicated file extension discovery service such as http://filext.com/ or http://www.file-extensions.org/ - you'll then be able to decide if you've got the proper program(s) on your machine to handle the file, or if you need to install said program(s).He's managed to bump a year-old Topic...Hi, PATIO. Solve : Why Non-line of sight WLAN.? |

Answer» Why Non-line of sight WLAN. Here we go again... My thought exactly. More nonsensical vitriol. You'd think he's never heard of Mobile Wireless adapters, which are practically exactly what he is describing. And the reason they haven't replaced Wifi is because they are slow and connections can be unstable. Come to think of it this seems similar to the "Bill O'Reilly" method of argument; imbue your "opposition" with so many fallacious and hole-riddled arguments that they most likely cannot be bothered to correct the flawed logic. And if anybody bothers, just re-word exactly what you just said as if it was a new argument. Repeat until your detractors can no longer be bothered and stop posting. Some people just never learn or give up. |

Solve : PowerPoint on a Flash Drive? |
|
Answer» I hope this question is in the right place. My TV plays JPG photos on a USB flash. The system is going to a menu in a cafeteria. The screen will run for approx 6 hours per day. Basically, the screen gets mounted on the wall and I use a PowerPoint Presentation to scroll through a variety of pictures of the food available. I'm going to be putting together 5 of these systems so I want to keep the cost down. What TV do you have? Would it play a PPP?This is to be a continuous presentation? No interaction? If there is no user interaction, you don't need a computer, just a media player. A media player can show either a digital video or a set of photos. The cost of Flash memory is very low. A flash drive that can hold three hours of HD video is just a few dollars now. The player is the more expensive part.Simple Media players are under $90 and play on any TV with component inputs. Take a look at this: Quote Micca MPlay Digital Media Player For USB Drives and SD/SDHC/MMC Flash Cards - Plays MPEG1/2/4, DivX, Xvid, RMVB, AVI, MOV, MP3, MP4 On All TV and HDTVHere is one manufacturer the low cost devices. http://www.miccastore.com/index.php You can also search amazon, com for 'digital media player' and find some. Or even eBay has them. An alternative is to just get a cheap DVD player and burn the PPP onto a DVD as a DVD movie. My TV is a Sanyo from Wall Mart. It only plays JPG, not digital video. Look at these: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Samsung-LN46C530/13908912?wmlspartner=hLUPakqa5g4&sourceid=38243670451575879238 They say new models play movies from USB flash. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 08, 2011, 11:46:02 AM This is to be a continuous presentation? No interaction? Thanks for the advice. I want to steer away from using a DVD as they have moving parts so are more prone to breakages. I've also been using the term "PowerPoint" and I think I should have said, "slide show" It is not imperative that the presentation be in PowerPoint. I think a Tv with a USB slot is going to be the best idea. I have made a quick mwv file and put it on a flash drive. I'm going to take it down to Walmart and plug it in and see what happens. If it will play it as I want then I will probably GO that way. One last thing....would it be better to get a Tv or a monitor? Is there a significant difference? I would go for a TV. Mass produced, lower cost, WARRANTY, good resale value. Some rival even the best monitors. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 08, 2011, 01:37:33 PM I would go for a TV. Mass produced, lower cost, warranty, good resale value. Some rival even the best monitors. I could reverse that and use it as a reason to purchase a monitor instead of a TV.How about it you grab one of these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883114089 Just strap it to the back of the tv or monitor and fire away. That way, you could manage the slideshow, movie, ppt, or whatever else from another computer or laptop over a network. When you say you are going to use five screens are they close enough that you could run cables to each and drive all of them off a single computer? That would SIMPLIFY updating them. Quote from: rthompson80819 on February 24, 2011, 01:48:32 PM When you say you are going to use five screens are they close enough that you could run cables to each and drive all of them off a single computer? That would simplify updating them. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102888 You could get one of these cards and put it in a cheap system and run hdmi or display port cables to each monitor (max length is about 50' without a booster). Then just keep the system in a closet or somewhere safe. |

Solve : What can't Netbooks Do ?? |
|
Answer» I really need a PC to surf the internet and use for storage of my photos from my digital camera. I really do nothing else. Would a netbook be OK? Can I print off a netbook? I read an article where Apple calls netbooks "pieces of junk". Is that true? Can it still download files off the internet? I'm not sure if it can play CDs or DVDs or make NEW ones. Am I better-off with a full-size laptop? What else can't a netbook do? The cost is not too much different than a notebook.Netbooks can do everything a laptop can do and ALMOST everything a desktop PC can do. I've gotten my HP Netbook up to 7 hours with its HDD. Harharharahh, OK, so it's even longer then laptops regardless of the HD. Quote ahh, OK, so it's even longer the laptops regardless of the HD. longer the laptops?? what? longer then laptops, I meant. As in, battery life. Quote longer then laptops I think you meant than.I'm currently typing this on a Samsung NC10 Netbook. It can do everything - Even basic video editing. It actually gets a higher benchmark score than my full desktop. (But have a look at my specs) The only problem is the lack of optical disc drive - You will need an external one or share one from another PC over a network. Hope this Helps, Cameron GrayI believe netbooks have a longer battery life because of their small LED screens and the N270 Intel Atom Processor which consumes much less power compared to processors found in laptops and notebooks. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 28, 2009, 09:25:25 AM Netbooks can do everything a laptop can do and almost everything a desktop PC can do. Most netbooks don't have optical drives. They do usually have the ability to attach an external optical drive through what is called a USB port.so is netbook simply a replacement for those ultraportable laptops?a netbook is a "ultraportable" laptop. the original NAME for which was the marketing agnostic "Subnotebook" or "sublaptop" which implied they were worse then laptops. The term 'Notebook' is replacing the term 'laptop' because laptops NOWADAYS get so hot, you can't put them on your laps. Netbook is originally a term for a small, portable computers designed for surfing the net (not for playing games, graphic editing, ect). |

It was the Win upgrade advisor that told me, I think it was to do with the shared mem(no video card)(( is it a conspiracy with computer manufactures lol) and yes I will be getting a P.S.U as soon as possible and a video card something on the lines of 600+ watt.and another hard drive It is the crap components P/B have used, if I knew then what I know now would never have got it. Solve : I'm Going To Buy A New Computer, I Have Questions And Need Help!? |
|
Answer» Alright I'm finally going to buy a new computer, and I need your help. My current computer is a Windows ME, Intel Pentium III, 1 GHZ, 100 FSB, 128 MB RAM, 512 MB, 100 MHz, 40GB. It's safe to say its run its course. Alas I'm not sure what to look for in a new computer. Dual-core, quad-core? AMD? Windows 7? I have no clue. Money wise I'm willing to shell out about 400 or less. But I don't really know what I'm LOOKING for. I'm not a gamer and would just use it for internet, CD burning, DVD burning. Hopefully their is something fast with a large hard drive and memory in my range. When I buy a new computer will my internet speed be faster, downloads faster? What else would be different? I already have a cable modem, but I think because of my old computer it's running a lot slower then it normally would. I hope someone actually read this and is willing to help, and if you are thank you.Are we talking computer only or computer and monitor? I'm not a gamer and would just use it for internet, CD burning, DVD burning. In my opinion you might consider getting a good used computer and save your money for some nice equipment you can enjoy. Microsoft has authorized many dealers to sell legitimate Windows XP PCs that have been reloaded for Windows XP SP3. And they sell them for a lot less that $400. They come one year warranty. You can upgrade the memory and hard drive yourself and have a great general purpose PC. And with the money your save, maybe buy a good video camera and put a video on your tube to show us how you what you got and how up improved it. Google 'refurbished XP desktop' and see what you find.YOU STILL USE WINDOWS ME? CRAZY but gets less because you are buying a new PC. Get the Free Windows 7 Upgrade, a Intel CELERON or Pentium Dual Core CPU or better, at least 2GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive or larger, a DVD burner or better, and a nVidia or ATI graphics card if you need it. Quote from: neelchauhan on October 01, 2009, 02:47:03 PM YOU STILL USE WINDOWS ME? CRAZY but gets less because you are buying a new PC. I am SICK and TIRED of seeing random RECCOMENDATIONS. this is NOT what the original poster needs, it's what neelchauhan "thinks" they need, and they obviously have NOT taken ANY of the requirements into account. Quote Get the Free Windows 7 Upgrade, Why? Quote a Intel Celeron or Pentium Dual Core CPU or better Why? Internet, CD Burning, and DVD burning can be done adequately with a K6-2, so I'm not sure how their requirements spawns this "recommendation" Quote at least 2GB of RAM Why do they need 2GB of RAM? Quote 500GB hard drive or larger a DVD burner or better In a rare twist this actually makes sense. but it's probably sheer luck. Even a stopped clock is right twice a day. Quote and a nVidia or ATI graphics card if you need it. nothing in their requirements requires this. notice the tag "I'm not a gamer". Not to mention that the 400$ price range completely precludes... well whatever you are suggesting (a new build? a new PC? for 400 dollars!? with THOSE specifications? Not freaking likely). I'd have to say that Geek-9pm's advice is excellent here- unlike the gamer kiddies that are oh-so-abundant and oh-so-loud with their "opinions" (which I might add are probably simply gleaned off "what's cool") we don't WANT what's cool. We want WHAT WORKS, and geek-9pm understands this better then any of the other helper posts, which in many cases merely regurgitate redundant information they saw on their alpha-bits boxes. (Also I might add that he has the perfect balance of "thrift" without passing the "miserly" mark. ) Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 01, 2009, 07:09:01 PM Why? Internet, CD Burning, and DVD burning can be done adequately with a K6-2, so I'm not sure how their requirements spawns this "recommendation"Well my main PC (I'm using it right now) has a K6-2 350 Mhz CPU but is a bit SLOW even with simple tasks like the internet. But I completely agree with Geek-9pm and BC_Programmer, you would be best off getting a used PC. The only other option I can think of for someone with your budget is a real cheap Dell (or other brand) PC but a good used PC will probably preform better anyway. Quote from: Cityscape on October 01, 2009, 09:46:33 PM Well my main PC (I'm using it right now) has a K6-2 350 Mhz CPU but is a bit slow even with simple tasks like the internet. Actually, I was speaking from experience too. First joined CH when I had a 350Mhz K6-2 as my fastest machine... it was quite agreeable speed-wise, since I had trimmed out excess services and background applications. (leaving me able to have 5 or 6 application opened and still hover around the 20-process mark). Had a DVD burner- although admittedly I couldn't really get it to burn at higher speeds.Going back to the original post, instead of continuing the off-topic talk, I would recommend getting a prebuilt Dell PC like the Inspiron 546 or the Inspiron 537s http://www.dell.com/us/en/home/desktops/inspndt/ct.aspx?refid=inspndt&s=dhs&cs=19&ref=dthp It would also be a good idea to upgrade the processor to a dual core processor instead of the default Celeron. You can also buy a monitor with it for a reasonable price, if you choose. Without a monitor, the 537s is $269, with a monitor, it is $429.We can still do Dual Core and come in way below $400 Look here: eMachines ET1641-02w Refurbished Desktop Computer This eMachine packs a Celeron Dual Core 2.0GHz processor with 2 cores. Add to that 2GB of DDR2-800 memory and a 320GB, 7200RPM SATA II hard drive and you can have a small library of music and data. It also has a DVD/CD burner you can use to burn your home videos, music, back up important data and play your favorite video games. Enjoy great visuals with the NVIDIA GeForce 7050 graphics. All these components run smoothly with Microsoft® Windows® Vista Home Premium SP1 http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp Guess the price! $239.97 (Select this line to reveal the price!) Add $40 for one year warranty. And no, I do not work for them. looks like a pretty good deal, except for the fact that it's E-Machines and it's refurbished. E-Machines consistently gets lower scores in reviews than other brands. Quote from: michaewlewis on October 05, 2009, 09:57:21 AM looks like a pretty good deal, except for the fact that it's E-Machines and it's refurbished. E-Machines consistently gets lower scores in reviews than other brands.Very true! Yet you can get a $40 one year warranty for it. A year from now the prices of everything will be much lower. Right now he wants a mediocre machine under $400. I mentioned earlier that he needs to spend money on other things, Like a really nice printer or camera. Trust me. You can not be happy with any $400 computer. Either you go for something that is new, cool and near $900 or settle for something basic for under $300 used with a warranty. Then spend the rest of the money on something your really want. And this is not just my opinion. It is a fact of life. However the best thing to do with an eMachine is buy a decent PSU and a stik of RAM and swap them in there and you can't beat the price/performance ratio without spending more cabbage... Solve : error occured: Unknown format or damaged? |

Answer» Hi, I've downloaded GTA IV there where 2 iso files and the second is the one with data3.cab and i can't extract it!! Don't bother trying to pirate software if you don't understand the basic concept of a disk image. Also, take a glance at the forum rules. To save you the trouble, I'll quote the relevant portion: Quote Downloading or using a program (e.g. torrent / P2P program) to download a copyrighted software program, game, movie, song, TV show, book, or any other content protected by copyright laws. I suggest a easy fix however- buy the game, if possible. Or don't play it. simple. I don't want to buy GTA 4 myself- I could run it easy. So I instead opt to play GTA3 and San andreas when the fancy strikes me (not often, after all the reformats I keep losing my progress ). If I may extend my current saying of "computing within your means" it also applies to games- "game within your means". Are you pirating for the sheer thrill of getting something free? Can you simply not afford the game? Some cases have been reported as having been dropped on their heads as children, thus reducing them to decrepit individuals with ambiguous moral alignments and a penchant for blue cheese. Whatever the case, and whatever the situation, pirating software, under any non-ambiguous accepted moral code, is not justifiable. Why do I say this? What if people cannot afford 200-300 dollar software? Well they can afford 200/300 dollar computers, can't they? often times people will spend thousands on a new PC build, only to pirate the OS and programs, claiming they cannot afford it. Well, perhaps they should have considered that in their pricing, rather then spending thousands on the hardware and making the questionable declaration that "they can't afford" software. Nonsense. They pirate because they can, because it's easy. It's also relatively easy to kill a person, few quick slashes, boom. dead. So why don't more people do that and take their wallets instead of downloading software? OH yes, because their moral code says that killing a person isn't "as bad". And I can sympathesize with the LOGIC. However, what I don't sympathesize with is the attempts at justification for pirating by referencing other crimes. People don't perform a burglarly and then claim, "well, it's not as bad as murder!"... why? because it's obvious that it is not. Relative comparisons can be made that seem to favour almost any argument. The common justification is that the person "won't buy the program anyway, so it doesn't affect their revenue". Alright. That makes sense, on the surface. however let us look at a best-selling game, Super MARIO Bros. 3. It sold.. .well, a LOT of copies.(might have been in the 30 million or so range). Now, beind a cartridge based game, and the limited PC technology of the time, it simply wasn't possible to "pirate" the game. (sure you could steal it, but that is conceptually different according to the ambiguous moral code that I am trying to bereft). Now, let's pretend that it was possible to somehow pirate the game. How many of the 30 million or so people who actually ended up buying the game would have pirated it and claimed that they NEVER INTENDED to buy it in the first place? the problem is claims can be made about what a person would have done in a separate situation but without actually being placed in theat situation any conjecture about their response to the situation is pure conjecture and often can be manipulated to suit whatever purpose the conjecture served. I additionally might add that trying to pirate software blindly- that is, without an idea exactly what your doing- is exactly how people get infected with the nasty viruses. Blind trust in an unknown entity that is giving you that 400kb Call of Duty ZIP file that is "super compressed" and blindly allowing UAC to continue when the enclosed EXE requires admin permissions. hmm, well that was an interesting rant.uhm yea *censored* must i do with this.. why are you so crying? it's fun to download games and maiby i can't afford a game now so shut your mouth about that and give me some advice to open a data3.cab file stpid ashle! Bye bye. Quote it's fun to download gamesDon't like the rules, create your own forum and get fined for software pirating.how dare you call me stpid! I am in no way a Self-Typed Process ID! you take that back! Nuff said... If you don't like the Rules go to warez.bin and good luck... Topic Closed.Off Topic... Bet he trys warez.bin... |

Quote from: CBMatt on October 05, 2009, 04:52:13 AM You could always change it to a porn forum. Maybe he'll start posting video game pictures.Very true. Try closing the forum for a bit, it might make him move to a new one to post his nasty’s.Yeah, punish all the innocent users - close the forum for a while. Good point Aegis...Or make it so all new users have to post a legitimate post in a "sandbox"/welcome section before they post in (or even see for that matter), the rest of the forum. Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be a lot easier to temporarily disable images? Instead of adding all of these features to complicate things for regular users and make them jump through hoops, just disable this feature until things calm down. And instead of deleting whatever new accounts this kid keeps making, just change the privileges of his account so that he can view the forum and make new posts, but nobody else will be able to see anything he says. Because his account stays active, he won't have to keep making new ones. And he can do whatever he wants (until he eventually gets BORED) and nobody else will have to see or deal with him. It's a fairly common method of phasing out those persistent trolls who keep coming back.A funny one. Redirect him to an empty forum. Solve : copying files in gui? |
|
Answer» Is there a limit to how large a file can be when using the Windows GUI to copy files from one drive to another? If files are too large, are you suppose to use the command prompt? If you are using a drive that uses the FAT file system there is a 4GB limit. Most flash drives and external hard drives use the FAT. ..not trying to accomplish anything other than obtaining info. Nope. It's a Filesystem limitation. Doesn't matter how you copy. I might add that the limit is actually 4GB minus 1 byte. With FAT32 the volume limit is 2TB, IIRC, and FAT is limited to 2GB, since the cluster size is limited to 32K and the 16-bit limit means that there can only be a certain number of clusters on a partition. (NT4 actually supported 64K clusters, which was definitely strange). Therefore a file larger then 4GB simply cannot exist at all on either FAT or FAT32. But back to the original query. There is no Artificial limit set by the File copy shell. However, there are issues with buffer size/copying ETC. with Vista RTM, I believe.Well thx for all the info.. I found more info. on this subject here.hey, I may not be thinking like you are, or being SPECIFIC, but if you check to see how large the files are --for instance bytes, kbytes, or mbytes it is easier to estimate whether there is room there. Also since the harddrive goes like from 2GB and up well there you go, you figure. |

But could you possibly post a screen shot of Disk Management? At the bottom - Disk 1 unknown & UNALLOCATED. That's your new drive. Right click on it and FORMAT it.Bingo ! !Oh boy, color me stupid. I kept looking at that, staring right at the indicated "drive 1" designation, knowing full well that my "C" drive was "drive 0" but the meaning of it all never dawned on me. All I could think of was that I certainly didn't want to chance messing up my "C" drive. |

Solve : put password before the welcome screen? |
|
Answer» Quote either way someone could hack into your computer just as easily umm... No. So If I leave a password of my account it's "just as easy" as if I leave one on?if a password screen pops up before logon why does it matter if the hacker knows the password he's going to get in I never heard of somebody being able to get into an account without a using a password program downloaded in the guest account if he has passwords on all of his accounts then that's bassicly all you can do for sucurityOh of course. I'm forgetting the whole "Let a hacker use your PC" event. All he's bassicly asking for is how he could be the only one to use the computer just go into control panel get rid of the guest account put in a good password and your done put a bios if you want for more sucurity but i think that will just make the person more determined to wanna try to get inA bios password can be put in the Flash memory.Once set, you have to destroy the BIOS chip to It can in such a way that you would have destroy the chip p to bypass it. Booth Intel and Apple are working on this. But it is not a new idea. You could do that twenty years ago. Or was i it forty years ago. Quote from: BC_Programmer on October 08, 2009, 11:24:57 AM Ahh yes, much in the same way burglars are so damned determined to get into the house with the moat full of evil plankton. you don't even know they have you, until it's too late, they rip huge chunks of flesh off your body, some the size of a pinhead. a tortuous death. No source needed. This is done in the industry, but it is not widely used so as to become a popular item. A t Flash memory can be kinds or even hybrid. One that is "fused" one time and the other that can be programmed again. We used to call this a PROM it it was one time only, or EPROM if you could do it again and EEPROM if it was very easy to do. and I used to do this stuff about 30 years ago. It is now called embedded programming. We used to call it just programming. I wrote some of my won loaders and BIOS stuff for the primitive systems we used years ago. Sorry about my bad spelling, At seventy years of age I can barely see the screen. http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=oR5&resnum=0&q=custom+EPROM+programming&um=1&ie=UTF-8&ei=aZzOSuDFGYvstAOg64DKBQ&sa=X&oi=video_result_group&ct=title&resnum=1# Edit :The term "Flash" is now only for a new type of EEPROM that has high speed write and erase cycles. Anyway, you can make a BUIS out of PROM, if you wantr to.hehehe What would be the point in doing that? If you were to manufacture a PROM with the password burned into the chip then the end user could not create a unique password that only he knows. It would defeat the whole purpose of using a password in the first place. Quote from: JJ 3000 on October 08, 2009, 08:31:13 PM What would be the point in doing that? If you were to manufacture a PROM with the password burned into the chip then the end user could not create a unique password that only he knows. It would defeat the whole purpose of using a password in the first place. yeah... it's not "flash" RAM in the current sense of the term. And Since ALL PC Bios's up to the mid 486-era were unchangable ROM chips you couldn't change anything on them. I guess the suggestion is that you mail order a special chip for your password? And like jj says here... the idea of a password is to be user-specific. if it's explained in the manual it's a waste of time. We're talking about passwords here, not the ROM BIOS, or the type of chip used to store it. passwords are stored in NVRAM along with the other configuration information, not on the ROM chip, so discussion of the ROM chip is irrelevant. "but that makes it easy to wipe, just remove the battery"! you say. Not really. it IS possible to get case locks or alarms that go off if the case is opened. The fact is denying physical access to something has been practiced FAR longer then for IT, and is a number of times better then simply putting on a password and forgetting about it. Heck if somebody was really that hard-up on security they may as well simply not connect to the internet and make sure the ENTIRE thing is disassembled when not being used, and locked into different lockers with different keys, and the locks are changed daily. This will protect people from real threats as well as the imagined ones. the latter being more prevalent and the former being more or less imagined.yeah your right.. its better to create one account and put password.. but still its not safe coz i know that there's still i way to hack a login password.. and i my self tried it.. the only thing left in my head is to use the bios password.. I don't know if there's a program that can remove a bios password, only two things i know to remove password in bios and that by removing the cmos battery and changing the jumper.. You know of a way to get into a password protected computer without using the guest account anywho try a hidden account so they need a name and password i don't think you can bypass the name Ok i'm confused know i want on youtube to look at some things anywho i ran into a problem look at this http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://kndritz.com/images/safe_mode.jpg&imgrefurl=http://kndritz.com/safemode.html&usg=__WOUvCD6hdWCaz9nFdWWl5MqLR9Q=&h=375&w=500&sz=23&hl=en&start=1&tbnid=JyESM8IADIX6lM:&tbnh=98&tbnw=130&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dwidows%2Bxp%2Bsafemode%26gbv%3D2%26hl%3Den ok you see the enable boot logging well i did that and there was a guest account but in safe mode and normal mode there wasn't i thought i deleted it why is it there when i use boot logging i would wish to get rid of my guest account and what is a net user in command promted is there anyway to disable it it sounds like that makes a guest account i'm surprised they make it sound hack proof without a password recovery disk here's a qoute ( If you do not have a reset disk or cannot log on as an administrator, unfortunately, you may have to reinstall Windows XP and all other programs that were INSTALLED on the computer before you can use the computer again.
