Solve : Site going down for 10-15 min Saturday?

Answer»

This shouldn't affect too many visitors but I thought I'd at least mention it. I'm going to be adding an additional 2GB of memory to the server (after upgrade will have 4GB) to help resolve any POTENTIAL system slow downs during peek times. The upgrade will be happening around 3AM Saturday MORNING. Because of the time and day I'd imagine this will go mostly un-noticed.3AM for you is around 5PM for me. Darn.

GOOD luck.Site was down between 2:00AM and 2:27AM MST and is back up and should be working normally. The time is off now.
I dont know if it's just me, but the times on the POSTS are wrong now.Hmm nope it's server.. Saying your post was at 10PMOk. Should be fixed. Nice CATCH. Posts made between server up and now are going to have off time stamps.Hmmm..... There are only 3 users online....

EDIT: 3....31 Guests, 3 Users (1 Buddy)

It's likely because of the time and day. Really early Saturday morning isn't going to have that many people on. Could also be due to inactive users between server time change and now not being shown because of the time difference.Yea, just seems somewhat unusual for only 3 users to be online....

Solve : Lets talk about SSL certificates!?

Answer»

My regards to all, all of us in the e-commerce business use certain securities so that our site is a safe place for people and they feel secure when making a purchase. One of the best methods we use is secure communication with the use of SSL certificates and also the use of https for security. I would like to know about the SSL certificate authorities that you people trust for your sites and the companies with the best deals from whom you prefer to purchase.I don't know a lot about this.  I've had a little experience with one SSL provider which I'll mention.  It's http://www.thawte.com/  I haven't compared them to other providers.  I do know Thawte has been around a long time, so I believe they one of the main players in this arena.Well, Thawte seems to work fine for Google, so I'd say they'd do you too!

Yahoo uses Equifax, so they must be pretty good as well.kpac, how can you determine who they use for SSL certificates? Quote from: soybean on December 04, 2008, 01:17:31 PM

kpac, how can you determine who they use for SSL certificates?

What browser?Using Firefox 3 most of the time. With Google, I logged into my AdSense account, and it redirected me (through an SSL address) to my account. If you have the right timing, press ESC when you are being redirected.

Then click the icon on the left of the address bar to see who owns the certificate, who signed it, and who verified it.

Yahoo was the same, but with EMAIL account INSTEAD of AdSense. I have been up and running my site for the past 3 years and from the past 8 months I have a SSL certificate as I have also introduced online shopping for my customers. Receiving customer’s personal details is a responsibility to handle and using high security standards assures the customers of the reliability of the site. I personally use my SSL certificate from SSL Star as they partner with the best quality of SSL certificates providers to deliver the best in all terms. This is spam.

Solve : Missing windows feature??

Answer»

Ok,  I this is something random I thought of while feeling lazy, that I think windows does not have and that it maybe was worth posting about...  This however could be useful for disabled people too :
So the WAY my computer is positioned is out of reach to me..  I often SWITCH between using headphones and speakers while using my computer and I thought it WOULD be nice if I could leave my headphones in it's socket and be able to switch between which I want to use, at a click of the MOUSE (instead of pulling the jack out or in to switch between).

I use XP, but I'm not sure if it's already possible with XP? or any windows versions.   But like I say, I just thought it would be something to ask about here and maybe it's something very basic that could be there, that doesn't seem to be there? In Master volume for example.I have never had the need to do what you seek. However it appears that your operating system is XP. If that is so it seems that by PLUGGING in your speakers to either front or back and then plugging in your headset to the alternative remaining you will obtain sound from both. If you then desired to limit to only one or the other from volume control you can mute that which you desire to cancel. Here is a source that seems to confirm that.

Solve : seeing all results when using Google?

Answer»

Hi, when you do a google searching it shows a certain amount of results. But it will not continue to show these all results as you scroll page after page. You will just see the same ones over and over again after reading them.
How can I continue to scroll and see all these results? Is there a certain comand you can enter that will allow you to do this?Use the advance search or check goggle's search settings.I looked at these and cannot figure it out. Any more hints please?Open a search page...upper rite hand corner there's a little gear icon...that's preferences...
Scroll down to how many pages are displayed....100 is the limit...which i think will keep you busy enough...
It does not go higher than that so the SHORT answer to your question is No...That changes "results per page" not the total number that you can view as you go from page to page. They usually list a very high number of results gotten - like 2,500.000 but if you keep viewing each page (a standard page is about 20) after about 55 pages thats it. If you just hit the same searchyou will just see the exact ones you already saw. So you get to see about 550 out of the very high number they claim to have found.I tried changing to not instant and then to 100 per page and it did NOTHING. I still got about 20 perpage and about 55 pages.  Thanks for the help.I don't think you get how google works...did you choose "save preferences" after changing the settings ? ?Personally, I'll seldom read more than two pages and if I don't see what I am looking for I'll reword the search and try again.  Most searches that come up dry are because the original query wasn't worded quite right. On Google search for
Basic search help
And find their search help page.He doesn't need it...i already told him the same things he will see there. When I do a search it shows a massive amount of results anyware from 65,000 to 2 million. So I start to look these over but after doing a complete viewing of about 55 pages it asks you "do you want omitted results shown" and if you click on this you will get another 55 pages to view.
Now that is only 110 times 20 on a page what 2200. There is alot more to see. Thanks for the help.I have clicked on the icon on the upper right. You can only increase number per page if you DONT use Google instant. So I turn that off and check for 100 per page and save preferences.

The amount per page is what it always is about 20. Nothing changes. Help! What can be further said? The behavior is by design.

Suppose the item thou want is the last in a long list of 50,000 items. What you you do to get to it.? If there are 10 items per screen view, there would be 5000 screen views. So you would hit the page down key 5000times. Is that what you would want? So would it help to have 20 items per screen view? !00 items? How fine is the  resolution on your display? Do you have micro vision?
Now if you have micro vision, you MUST be superman. Superman has no problem going through 50,000 items in a Google search. He can hit the page down key so fast it melts. Quote from: ricky2me on June 18, 2011, 01:22:22 PM

Solve : Easy way to tell what software is stoping computer from shutting down??

Answer»

Hi All

I've been using computers for years at work but as far as fixing PROBLEMS I'm hopeless.

I reloaded windows about 12 months ago. I used dban because I'd managed to get some sort of bug. Because it was an upgrade version of windows 7 I had to load Vista first. I couldn't be bothered loading all my music recording programs in to Vista so I waited until windows 7 was loaded. A few of these programs were xp or vista but with the W7 compatability thing I was able to get them all working upgrading to the latest drivers etc. After doing all this I noticed on shut down only the monitor swtches off but the computer keeps going so I always have to hold down the on/off button for a few seconds. Which MEANS when I switch in on i get the windows didn't shut dow properly and then it always wants to do a scan which I have done on a few occassions but MAKES no difference.

Is there an easy way of telling what software or driver is stopping the MACHINE from turning off other that uninstall and reinstall every program one by one. Sorry if this has already been asked before. Can I disable one by one in lieu UNINSTALLING, Just a beginner's thought.
Thanks for listening
Dallas

windows 7
intel dual core
4 gb ram1) To isolate the problem program do a selective startup. Open msconfig and on the General tab choose "selective startup" (uncheck all three items) and reboot and then shutdown. Does the problem still occur? If not, start adding items back to msconfig one or two at a time, rebooting after each change, until the problem reappears and you'll have identified the offending process. This is clearly a time consuming procedure, but it is the best way to determine if some process loading with the system is the cause of your problem.

After you've isolated the cause, do not use msconfig to permanently disable the process. Instead, if it is a service go to START - RUN and type: services.msc (then press enter) and disable the service OR, if it a program, you can download & run a simple app such as Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml) to enable, disable, or otherwise manage startup programs.

2) After you're all set you need to run checkdisk /r (To run checkdisk, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type:chkdsk /r  (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot.)Hi Allan
Thanks for your help but no it didn't seem to make any difference. As I said I'm a beginner so I first had find out how to open msconfig. I just used help and got to the screen you're talking about. I went to General tab and chose 'selective setup' unchecking all 3 ticks. When I pressed 'apply' the first 2 boxes turned all blue. I then pressed ok and and restart. I realised restart only turns off the monitor as well. So I had to use the on/off button again to switch the computer off. When I switched it back on it started really fast, I suppose because there were no programs to switch on at startup. I then tried to just 'shut down' but still the computer didn't turn off only the monitor. I switched it back on and went to the msconfig page again noticing the 'selective startup' button was still selected but the 3 boxes all had ticks but unhighlighted so I couldn't change them. I went to the startup page from that screen and noticed only a few of the programs turn on at startup. I had to change everything back to the way it was because  i seemed to have no connection to the internet so now it's just the same as how it was. Does this mean that it's not one of the startup programs causing the problem?
This all may seem like a stupid question to other more experienced computer people but it's annoying having to switch off by holding the botton every time
I'll try the chkdsk /r option you mentioned and let you know.
Thanks
Dallas

Solve : Programmer or Software Engineer - Winch??

Answer»

Wanna be a Programmer or Software Engineer - Winch?
Many visitors to this forum seem to have an interest in writing batch files or a few lines of something else. Often with little evidence of design and use of algorithms.
Nothing wrong with that. But if you want to pursue a future in IT, more is needed.
Look at this recent article:
Quote

Software Engineer Review
A software engineer has one of the most in-demand, lucrative careers in the world. The number of individuals presently employed in this profession, 909,600, is almost double that of any of the other computer careers we reviewed. About 57 percent of software engineers design computer applications, and the remaining 43 percent design systems software.
The above is from an article on http://toptenreviews.com and below is the link to the page.

No. Read the report.
A real Software Engineer has to have a degree. At least BS.
Anybody can call himself a developer.
IT includes wide spectrum of commercial activities that are not tie directly to the dot com thing. Or even a physical network.  IT includes the EE who would designs a new cell phone.
And yes, Steve Jobs dropped out and became very good at what he does. But he is one of the few exceptions. The rest of us have to study.

oooh enterprisey.

I still disagree. Definition according to the dictionary:

Quote
A software engineer is a person who applies the principles of software engineering to the design, development, testing, and evaluation of the software and systems that make computers or anything containing software, such as chips, work.

Quote
IT includes wide spectrum of commercial activities that are not tie directly to the dot com thing. Or even a physical network.
Of course it does. but you're talking about software engineering, not IT jobs at large.

Quote

That hasn't really changed much. Look at ads in 1998 for Java programmers with 5 years of corporate experience, and now they want people with 5 years of experience working with WPF. Not much different in that their requirements are impossible to satisfy.

Also, from what I can tell, having a degree means absolutely nothing, in truth, or at least, it doesn't mean what people who are looking for people with said degrees would like it to mean. the courses hardly ever touch on databases, ignore TEST-driven development and almost always stick with a single language throughout- usually Java, Scheme, or smalltalk. Whereas corporations want people who can write robust database driven 3 tier applications using a handful of different languages and technologies (usually they want XML without knowing what it's for, or why... XML in many ways is the new Java); only the actual developers usually care if they use a well modelled object heirarchy. Management (and thus the people often responsible for hiring, although most companies actually use peer review) just wants people who have lots of sparkly acronyms on their resume.

I recall reading on TDWTF about a person who had three computer science degrees (legit) that couldn't program worth a lick. I assume they are the exception rather then the rule, but if somebody like that can get these degrees, do they mean anything? not really.

Of course in all fairness you never said that they did; you merely stated a fact and that fact was that companies are looking for people with said degrees. They aren't requiring them any more then they used to. In fact, (again, from what I can tell) some of them have actually realized that they are meaningless and basically ignore wether or wether or not that person has degrees, and instead opt for interview questions that will determine if they know what they should know to have the job better then that expensive piece of paper would.I'm using DragonPad.

Hello again, BC programmer.
Your logic is well-founded and based on reality. My intent was to provide to the readers of this forum some information that would broaden their outlook of what computer technology is. In the industrial circus era many who say or believe that software engineering is a form of electrical engineering, and the people who organize electrical engineering conferences try to include software engineers in their fold.

I am going to include in a non-British QUOTATION from somebody who claims to be some kind of expert about the future of top jobs in the United States. He claims the information is based on US government purports. Of course, reports are always three years or so behind the times. Still, here it is for what it's worth.

The top jobs for 2011 and beyond: 5 careers for the new year
By Jessica Hanley

Top jobs for 2011 and beyond
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the technology, health care, and education sectors should add the most new jobs from 2008 to 2018. It's a great time to join the ranks of one of the following in-demand professions.
1. Network systems and data communications analyst

The BLS expects computer and mathematical science jobs to grow more than twice as fast as average from 2008 to 2018, and network systems and data communications analysts are leading the way with a predicted 53 percent employment growth. These analysts plan, design, and test companies' communication and data systems, including Internet, intranet, and local area networks. In 2008, network systems and data communications analysts earned a median salary of $71,100.....

2. Computer software engineer

Computer software engineering is one of today's fastest-growing occupations, with 35 percent employment growth expected from 2008 to 2018. From computer hard drives to video games, software engineers design the programs that businesses and individuals use on a daily basis. In addition to great job opportunities, computer software engineers enjoy generous salaries--in 2008, applications engineers earned a median salary of $85,430.

A bachelor's degree in software engineering, computer science, or a related field is generally required to become a computer software engineer. Software engineers should also have a broad understanding of computer systems and technology. Many computer science and software engineering degree programs are available online, so you can continue your education regardless of your current job or location.
3. Registered nurse

The BLS expects nursing to generate more new jobs than any other occupation from 2008 to 2018, with an estimated 581,500 new registered nurses needed. Nurses work with doctors in hospitals, care clinics, and private offices to diagnose and treat patients. In 2008, the median salary for registered nurses was $62,450.   ....

4. Dental hygienist

The BLS expects rapid growth throughout the entire health care INDUSTRY, including dental professions. Dental hygienists are among this fast-growing group, with 36 percent employment growth expected ...

5. Elementary school teacher

After health care and professional services, education is expected to be one of the biggest employers from 2008 to 2018, with nearly 1.7 million new jobs created. Demand for elementary school teachers, in particular, should account for 244,000 of these new jobs...

A career with potential

While you can't fully predict the future economy, the careers above are expected to have excellent employment prospects through 2018. Online education has made earning a degree more convenient than ever
...
http://www.worldwidelearn.com/education-articles/top-jobs-2011.html

Of course, this report completely ignores is the fact that in 2009 and 2010 United States economy went completely stagnant. And in Europe everything is going down the tube. Maybe the only ones who are employed might be the Eskimos. But I'm not sure about that.

Also, I should probably point out that it's quite literally illegal for a software developer- or programmer- regardless of whether they have a "Software engineering" degree or not, to call themselves an "engineer" in At the very least, Texas and Canada.

What I find interesting about the link in the original post is that what they describe is not an engineer; there is a rather large divide, much as a Electrician is not really an electrical engineer nor is a Assembly line factory worker necessarily a mechanical engineer. Technically, many of the things they are doing would in fact count, in the definition of the word, as Engineering, but "Engineering" has a broader legal implication in that while they leverage the same techniques as their "non-engineer" comrades, they often apply them in situations that are more likely to cause loss of life if done incorrectly.

A prime example- bridge construction. You need engineers. Wiring up that supercomputer or hydraulic dynamo? you need electrical engineers, not weekend electricians.

However, at the current time, while there are different degrees for Computer Science and Computer Engineering, the latter is a rather small subset of the former; and the former is often not a prerequisite for the latter, either. The problem is that while they learn the purely engineering topics they learn nothing about how to do so well nor about the very thing that they apply to perform that engineering- namely Computer Science. This results in such collosal disasters of over-engineered and under-designed products such as the Therac-25 where mistakes made by software engineers cause rather serious implications and death.

This is also where a notable divide can be seen. While your standard "engineer" (in the traditional sense, such as bridges, advanced electrical applications, etc) will in fact be held personally accountable for their own professionalism, in the case of "software engineering" (I use that term in quotes because it's both ill-defined and badly conducted where it is claimed to exist), the companies are held responsible; But not the actual people who did the work. While the companies themselves are not completely blameless, this differs completely from traditional mechanical engineering. Licensed Professional Engineers know that their professional livelihood rests on their projects not hurting the public.  Many Professional Engineers have had their licenses suspended or revoked for screwing up, even if the screw up was not directly their fault.  I have never heard of a "Software Engineer" being held to a higher standard than anyone else who interacts with the public. It's basically just a fancy label for a enterprise developer.

The thing is, while the other engineering disciplines have developed over hundreds, if not thousands of years, by applying the principles of their "sciences"; Computer Science is not only a very young field but it's not even required to become a card-carrying "Software Engineer". Basically, It's akin to CALLING a person who constructs a wheel an "engineer" while by the definition of the word they did in fact "engineer" it, it doesn't bring with it the same professionalism as the more aged engineering disciplines. At the moment, Software Engineering degrees, unlike, say, Mechanical Engineering degrees, are absolutely meaningless. Yes, yes, look you paid a lot of money and got a certification and now you get to put this neat framed piece of paper on the wall. That doesn't mean everybody who follows a different path is incompetent, or doing anything unsafe, or (even) that the Software Engineering profession is doing the right thing- in comparison to "standard" software development. Professional Engineers are held responsible for every decision they make, regardless of any employee-employer relationship. This is not the case for Software Engineers.

Now, I'm not saying that They don't have any qualifications whatsoever; my point is that they aren't actually getting the training to apply Computer Science principles for Engineering any more then you're standard software developer; They don't have "engineering ethics" courses they have to take like real engineering degrees. As it stands now it's a giant sick joke.

That was a good post, BC.
It makes this thread more valuable as a reference.
For those who want to learn more software development, group  responsibility and the engineering profession, here is a good  set  of book reviews.

Solve : Game Boy Advance/color game help?

Answer»

I LOVED this old game for my gameboy color... problem is I can't find it, nor do i know if it was my gameboy color OR ADVANCE... can anyone provide me with a site with all the old gameboy color/advance games releaced (If the site has game screenshots, double thanks =D)

Not expecting MUCH feedback from this, but I have been searching for a while and it would be nice.

Thanks in advance, Artimisbe nice to have details about it.Um...  RPG-style. Kind of fantasy-like. Storyline goes along the LINES of: You are droped into a fantasy-world by a MAGIC DRESSER! OMG OMG (I am not kidding. Magic dresser. Hehe)

Your sister was "Kidnapped" by the "boss" of the game. The King of the fantasy world (Who is MAGICAL or whatever) said that if you won the "Tournaments" in his village, he would grant you one wish, which would be your sister back. It is kind of an early final-fantasy/POKeMON mixed ripoff. I still loved every minute playing it =D.

There was a battle system, where three of your "team members" which would be the ENEMIES you caught in previous battles, would fight UP TO three enemies. Every two or three levels or so you would face a boss.I have a question that is completely off-topic for this thread. How come as SOON as I post a thread, I find the Wikipedia page for it? And, five minutes later, find the game?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Warrior_Monsters

Quite fun. Going to buy it from one of those classic game collectors to PUNCH in my DS later today.

Thanks for, even though it really wasn't used, help =D

Just one more pointless thread.

Solve : System registry?

Answer»

I found the resident guru's suggesting it best not to purchase and run a registry cleaner.   How then do we know what items should  -  could  -  or even  -   MIGHT  be something we should get rid of without doing irreparable damage?
This unit is running VERY slow lately, and when I ran one of the systems, the list indicated 1200 items.  Then of COURSE they wanted me to purchase a PROGRAM......Spyboy S&D should do the job. Quote from: kpac on December 04, 2008, 01:13:27 PM

Spyboy S&D should do the job.

Spybot is not a registry cleaner and he probably doesn't need one.
However you could DLoad and run CCleaner which is fairly safe.
Cleaning the registry for a system speedup is nothing but a myth.

Quote
Then of course they wanted me to purchase a program......

Here is a clue... Usaually run Spybot, and Adware about once every 10 days or so,  but that doesn't seem to make much difference.  That's why I thought about clearing the registry.Do the regular system maintenence...
Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools ...run disk cleanup.
Re-boot and from the same location run defrag.
Check your FREE space on that drive...how much is left ?

Remove a side panel and see if the insides need housekeeping...if so get a can of conpressed air. DO NOT use a vacuum.
As always when working inside the case take anti-static precautions and remove all power sources.
Check to see all fans operate properly after cleaning.

Any better ?Nealf,

Learn something from me.
I have only been employed as a programmer for 43 years, took care of major critical systems and seen many crashes due to someones "improvement", and I am not gun shy.

If you post yourself as a "Rookie" and you are looking at 1200 suspicious items, if I were you, I would not touch them with a ten foot pole.
I have run so called "registry cleaner" a few times and seen a load of weird looking things, but would not purge them, because I would not know what the outcome is. If it does not hurt, leave it alone. Don't search for imaginary problems!

A few years ago, a so called "Registry Cleaner" would check my system "free". So tested this on a PC I hardly use. Then 3/4 on the way the "Cleaner" stopped and asked if I wanted to subscribe. My answer was "No". Then this "Cleaner" let me bail out.
My reward was a screwed Registry, and a System Restore.
The Motto is: "If it ain't broken, don't fix it", AND don't believe those "Cleaners".

To fix a slow PC, is to
-delete those  "Temporary Internet Files" IMMEDIATELY, especially after visiting "Dubious" Sites, and after those Quazillions dumb "Downloads".
- de-fragment your C -drive "OFTEN".
-run a "DISK CHECK" ("Error Check") on your C-drive "OFTEN".

Not doing this really scatters the Disk contents around, with a horrendence "chaining" effect and slows the system down.

Hope this helps.

One thing I would mention - if you decide for whatever reason to risk some registry ''housework'' - at very least utilize ERUNT - and thus have a repair option if things go south!

I made some small changes to my networking some weeks ago and could not find where my erroneous info was sitting - so I went back a day THRU ERNDT and got out of trouble.  A screwed registry is a potential nightmare and can on occasion be disasterous.patio said it all:

Solve : Router recommendations?

There are many Router brands available.  What are your recommendationsThey're all about the same.  All do the job.  I'm partial to Linksys (now part of Cisco), but I also have an old D-Link wireless only used as wired.  If you are primarily interested in wireless, range may be more of an issue to you.Good morning, your question is very broad.
The commander has a very good answer. Just go get yourself one of the D-Link or similar entry-level routers.
This issue or question has been discussed on an on on so many different websites that giving a general answer is just too easy. So may I assume that you want a different kind of answer?
Okay, here it comes from now is not the time to make a major investment in any kind of network equipment unless you absolutely have to. In the next two years there's going to be stuff coming out that will blow you away.
And no, I'm not talking about wireless iN routers. The wireless N standard is going to die a quick death. Just wait for the next new thing.
Meanwhile, any major brand has been around for more than a couple of years will work for you.
Yes, that is a very OPINIONATED answer. But isn't that what you expected here?Linksys Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 22, 2010, 10:56:44 AM

No! Obviously this means that there is DEFINITELY going to be a mustard that uses Wireless-N technology.. or perhaps a mustard dispenser that leverages 802.11n in an attempt to bind synergy. Clearly google wouldn't provide results that simply have those words on the page with no regard for the particular context! it's not as if that's what a search engine is for... oh wait a second...

Also, the original search would find pages about Wireless N not failing that had ads from back to the future or something.

Notably, searching for "no future for wireless N" (with quotes) gives no results, while "wireless N is the future" gives 34,000 results.

of course the number of results for a search phrase, which geek seems to provide as evidence of something, is COMPLETELY redundant anyways. Going by the logic presented we could also say that over 3,730,000 circus bears have learned to type, since we get that many hits for the query circus bear learns to type. of those 3.7 million, a RATHER disproportionate 289,000 are mustard lovers (mustard loving circus bear learns to type) Obviously, we can draw some sort of conclusion from this, despite the results being predominantly advertisements for restaurant mustard pumps, with very little circus bear. And of course we didn't properly define what kind of circus bear- a brown bear? black bear? Nope, we assume google knows.

Well... I need to clarify
If you would just look through those 6.5090,000 post, you will see
90,000 are not relevant.

Does the educational instituter you attend have a recommendation?
Pentium is an INTEL product.
But now you can BUY Apple computers with Intel inside.

Besides, the op said he wants to purchase a pc for study purpose. It's not clear whether he means he wants to study the pc itself, or use the pc for studying school subjects.

Also, why is a macbook the best choice? That makes no sense to me. Quote from: JJ 3000 on December 22, 2010, 08:53:17 PM

thanks geek...your fervent response is hereby appreciated.   The very 1st important item you need to asses is what are your needs from the computer? More than likely depending on your course curriculum the software component may become more important than the computer itself. Also if you desire (need) portability to use it both at home and at school that may make a laptop your best purchase. Before you purchase anything define your needs. Only you can do that. truenorth Quote from: truenorth on December 23, 2010, 08:29:08 AM

Yes, that's most important.  For example, if your main purpose is to write papers for school, an older system such as a Pentium 4 will do the job quite well.  So, you could save money by buying a used computer.

getpcs, you got negative comments because you SHOUTED at us, and also (to a certain extent) because your question is obviously about a homework or school project, therefore having an educational purpose. That is, to get the student to practise and develop skills and so the teacher can see what the student has (and has not!) absorbed from the classes and also any course materials such as textbooks. You need to be saying to your teacher "I don't understand what check boxes are for and how to program with them."

Solve : Uploading pictures from camera?

Answer»

Hello all- I have a question. Before I throw my computer across the room because I have wasted so much time trying to figure this out- maybe someone can assist?

When I plug my USB driver into my laptop to upload pictres from my CAMERA- which I often do- a box used to appear on the screen asking me which program I want to use to open- FINEPIX, Shutterfly, HP Photo Smart, etc.  but now nothing happens. A box appears when I plug it in and there are not any options and it won't even read off my memory CARD. FinePix is what I usually use and it was auto- but now it opens and won't save any or view them. It works fine when I do it on the regular computer but not my HP laptop all of a sudden. I have rebooted, uploaded new drivers for FinePix, troubleshot through Fuji website- nothing ADDRESSES this

Thoughts? Not sure at all - but wondering if other USB items still perform properly.  Any yellow "!" showing in USB section of device manager at all - worth checking.

You mention no read of mem card but - is this via a card reader or trying still from the connection to camera?

All I can think of right now is to uninstall RELATED software and reinstall.

Sorry, not much help otherwise. Quote from: kas0912 on November 30, 2008, 04:47:05 PM

Drivers are software, so you can't plug them in...explain? Are you plugging in your camera? Or a memory card reader? Does anything show up in my computer when you plug it in? Any question or exclamation marks in device manager? (You can open device manager by going to start>control panel>system>hardware>device manager).

It may be funny, but it is certainly not "inexplicable". And Microsoft can explain it. As I can.

It is in fact perfectly true that you cannot create a folder named "CON", nor can you rename an existing folder to "CON". However, there is no mystery surrounding this RESTRICTION whatsoever. The "team" at Microsoft, and a great many others besides, know perfectly well why you cannot name a folder "CON". "CON" and a number of other character strings are in fact reserved names that go back to the days of DOS and cannot be used to name folders or files.

Noticed the weird bug? No one can explain!

I can.

Bush hid the facts (sometimes also This app can break) is the common name for a bug present in the charset detection of all versions of Microsoft Notepad in Windows 2000 and Windows XP, which causes a file of text encoded in Windows-1252 or similar encoding to be interpreted as if it was UTF-16, resulting in mojibake.

While "Bush hid the facts" is the sentence that is most commonly presented on the Internet, it does not exclusively occur with that phrase. The bug can be triggered by many sentences, including those that follow a particular structure: first word with an even number of letters (2 or more) and all other words with odd number of letters (3 or more).

The bug occurs when such a string is entered into Notepad (with no other characters) and then saved as a text file. Upon reloading the file into Notepad, the text will be replaced with nine Chinese characters, or squares if the language PACK has not been installed. To retrieve the original text, bring up the "Open a file" DIALOG box, select the file, select "ANSI" in the "Encoding" list box, and click Open.

The rand function

The Microsoft Knowledge Base article How to Insert Sample Text into a Document in Word [212251] explains the use and syntax of the function:

Microsoft Word allows you to quickly insert sample text into a document. To do this, type =rand() in the document where you want the text to appear, and then press ENTER.

The inserted text is that hardy perennial: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog,” which contains every letter in the English alphabet.

By default, the sample text contains three paragraphs, each containing five sentences. You can control how many paragraphs and sentences appear by adding numbers inside the parentheses, for instance:

=rand(3,4)

The first number is the number of paragraphs, and the second the number of sentences per paragraph. If you omit the second number, you get five sentences in each paragraph. So, for example:

=rand(3,4)

inserts three, four-sentence paragraphs, while:

=rand(10)

inserts ten, five-sentence paragraphs.

The maximum number for either parameter is 200 and may be lower depending on the number of paragraphs and sentences specified. For instance, if you specify 200 paragraphs, then the maximum number of sentences per paragraph you can specify is 99:

=rand(200, 99)

If you specify 200 sentences per paragraph, then the maximum number of paragraphs you can specify is 99.
I use =rand (numbero series here)
all the time. Its great when you are designing webpages that may have extensive content, and you feel you might be going over the "Edge" of the page in the FUTURE, like testing to see how much it can hold.

As for Number 2, yup, I've heard that before, same as Number 1Oh do you guys really think that i'm spamming i know that it's old but some beginners don't know about this so therefore i post Quote from: kasrawis on November 30, 2008, 02:45:42 AM

It's a bit off topic for a Windows Problems forum, isn't it?
I'm from way back in the DOS days

CON means console

you used to be able to create a text file right from the command prompt by using

copy con > "whatever filename you want"

as soon as you hit enter you typed whatever text you wanted
and then ended it with a ^Z

this provided a quick sort of scratch pad so to speak
a programmer could BANG of a few lines of code into a file and compile it
without needing some kind of word processor in between.

cheers

Solve : File copied images into JPG files?

Answer»

I have Windows Vista and I would like to copy an old photo from my wife's myspace to post in a profile . i Photobucket says " a valid extension is jif , jpg , jpeg , png , bmp "  ( I'm lost )
I have the pictures saved , but the only files I can find are a " text only file "
I do understand the copy right laws and plan to uphold them . Do you know the file type, the file extension, on the file?  Can you open this "photo" in Microsoft Paint or some photo editing software, or in your web browser?

Did you save the photo from a myspace page?  How, by right clicking on it and selecting Save Picture As?  I am trying to copy images so I can put it in any file that would WORK . I tried " rich text file off of word pad . I can copy the photo on to word pad and view , but all the file choices are fore text only . Photo bucket won't recognise the files . If you upload off of a memory card , it loads in the right files .
How can I copy any image and get it to upload to photobucket to be able to post ? Quote from: scot120 on November 29, 2008, 05:24:03 PM

I tried " rich text file off of word pad . I can copy the photo on to word pad and view , but all the file choices are fore text only . Photo bucket won't recognise the files .
Well, that should TELL you something.  Don't use WordPad.  You have Paint; it's on all Windows systems.  Also, several good freeware photo editing programs are available, if needed.  So, there's no need to use any word processor when working with PHOTOS.

Have you tried viewing jpg files with Paint? No , I didn't know where to find it . I'll let you know how it works .You don't know where to find Paint?  Go to your Programs menu and then select the Accessories sub-menu; that's where you'll find Paint.I knew where paint was , I just didn't know I can get to JPG files in paint .
 It worked , Thanks
Now I have to figure out how to edit and post from photobucket . I went to photobucket because a friend suggested it . I'll have to get back in touch .
Once again , Thank You .I, and other members, are familiar with photobucket.  Let us know if you have trouble figuring it out.

I've had a photobucket account for several years and have often used it to post images in a forum. They made several major changes to their site during the time I've used it.  I'm not SURE I like the most recent change but I STILL think it's a great site to use for sharing photos.

Plug one end into the Droid X. Plug the other end into a TV with HDMI INPUT. The FUNCTIONALITY is a bit limited on the Droid X, THOUGH. You can only output images from the gallery. Anything else INVOLVES hacking/unlocking and we don't do that here.

Does the TV have a little socket like this, around the back?

Stick the other end of the cable in there. if your TV does not have one, I guess you're out of luck.

I'm actually getting this info for someone. Does he have to turn the television to a certain setting? Does he have to go a certain setting on his Droid? We do not have your friend's TV in front of us, nor do we have its remote control in our hand, and we especially do not have the TV's user guide. Therefore it would be difficult to give other than very vague advice. You should be posting in a Droid X forum. Better still, get your friend to.

Solve : GUID or MBR. What's on your Hard Drive??

GUID or MBR. What's on your Hard Drive? You may never need to know. Or maybe not knowing COULD hurt your PC experience.

The new GUID is the future.
The old MBR is dead.

But the change is not well-liked.

The purpose of this post is to help any user understand the problems of mixing Windows XP with Vista on the same disk drive. But if you install XP first, then Vista, it works just fine. It is when yhou want to repair or install XP again, there may be issues. A better choice is to put XP on its own hard drive.

The woes of a GUID Partition Table

GPT, an acronym for GUID Partition Table, is likely something you've never heard of before. Perhaps that's a good thing. Throughout my usage of GPT, I've come to see that it's a total and complete waste of time.

What is GPT, anyway? Wikipedia defines it as a partition layout STANDARD for a hard disk. They go own to say that "it is a part of the Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) standard proposed by Intel as a replacement for the outdated PC BIOS, one of the few remaining relics of the original IBM PC."....

(more...) http://www.daniweb.com/software-development/computer-science/threads/218597

He got a lot of flack for saying that. CLICK on the link and read the whole story and the responses from others.Windows Vista and 7 do not use GPT by default and they must be specifically chosen while partitioning a drive or during setup. Additionally, they are only supported by the 64-bit editions. Not sure why this is earth-shattering news...

Solve : cant access google only?

Hi everyone,

I can't access google on my notebook.  Google is the only website that doesnt work.  Everything else is fine.  I ran spybot search and destroy and it found nothing.  I run windows live one care and it found nothing.  I was able to get google by typing in the ip address, but it still would not work from that point on.  I tried the following commands that Sykes in chat gave me:

netsh int ip reset c:\reset log.txt

netsh winsock reset

ipconfig /flushdns

ipconfig /flushdns

But they didnt seem to do anything

Can anyone help me?Can you post a copy of the HOSTS file?

You can find it in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc.
Open HOSTS with Notepad and post the contents.after drivers where do i go to find the hosts file?
# Copyright (c) 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first COLUMN followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
#      102.54.94.97     rhino.acme.com          # source server

127.0.0.1       localhost

Hmmmm.....I'm not sure what '::1             localhost' is but I would try this.

Make a copy of the HOSTS file (to back it up) and then delete the last line and save it.

Then see what happens. Thanks, I will try this later tonight.i tried to change the host file but my computer DENIED me access.  I am the owner of the computer and logged in as the administrator but it is not letting me make the change. What is blocking access? Antivirus?

Solution:

Please perform the following steps:

1. Please download and install Cumulative Patch MS03-040 for Internet Explorer (828750) from the following weblink:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/critical/828750/default.asp

2. Find your Hosts file. Right-click on it and select Properties; uncheck the box that says "Read Only"; click OK. The Hosts file might be located in any of the following location with respect to the operating system:

On Windows XP it's likely to be at      : C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts.
On  NT or 2000 it's likely to be at     : C:\Winnt\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts.
On 98 or ME it's likely to be at                : C:\Windows\hosts.

3. Then open Hosts with Notepad, and delete every line which contains a reference to Google, or any other search engine which your are using, or includes the IP number 64.191.95.139, then Save (MAKING sure that Notepad saves it as just Hosts and not Hosts.txt).

4. Restart the system.
5. Now try to use the search engines which will function normally. hi Sykes,

I tried to download and run the patch, but i got the message that the download was not compatible for the version of windows i am running, which is Vista.have you tried the HOST file steps, sometime it may work!

Solve : Excel crashes when i save a shared speadsheet(contains macro)?

    ActiveWindow.ScrollColumn = 1
    ActiveCell.Rows("1:1").EntireRow.Select
    Selection.Delete Shift:=xlUp
    ActiveCell.Select

Then I made it 'shared'. After that every time I run this macro when i TRY to save it crashes.

It contains some other macros and conditional formating.
It is saved fine if it's not shared or if it's shared and I don't use this macro.
Any ideas?
It was crashing because this macro copy-paste an 'gestep' command.
don't know why but I REPLACE the command and it's saving it fine now.

Solve : Run-once only file?

I'm building PCs for a few people locally and I want to be able to have a kind of "guide" open up when they turn on the PC for the first time. I will already have configured the PC for them, I just want it to RUN once the next time it's turned on.

The "guide" is essentially information on internet habits, anti-virus PROGRAMS, backups etc... what would be the best way to create this file, e.g. WordPad (rtf) or the like?

Thanks.

EDIT:: re:way of creating file - I think preinstalling Foxit and using that to open a PDF would be the best idea. What about the idea of creating it on a removable media and then they could continue to access the information indefinitely. If the new
OWNERS of your computers have limited knowledge of computers they will find it a GREAT advantage to be able to refer to your "guide" more than just once. You could include certain info on the media that would point out some things they could try in the event of certain malfunctions. They could then access that info from another computer. truenorthWhy not use a batch file?

Why not use a batch file?

Code: [Select]echo off
start /wait YOURGUIDEHERE
del YOURGUIDEHERE
del %0

But then again, the guide will only be deleted if they don't close the command prompt...
Yes, but then how do I get that to run on startup? Quote from: kpac on December 31, 2010, 06:30:08 PM
Yes, but then how do I get that to run on startup?

put it in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\RunOnce

I'd go with something else, though, like the PDF; then have the foxit command line in RunOnce. Then if you wanted to keep the information available even after that you could make a shortcut to the PDF somewhere as well. Quote from: BC_Programmer on December 31, 2010, 06:34:00 PM

Ah yes. I think that's the way to do it. What's the hook to open a file in Foxit?I'm pretty sure you can just PASS the foxit executable the path to the PDF file, and it will open it.

RunOnce entries have a "description" for the name, which doesn't really matter, and the value is the command line; in this case something like

"C:\Program Files \Foxit Software\Foxit Reader\Foxit Reader.exe" "path\to\pdf\file.pdf"

There are other switches you could use to more fully customize the entire thing, like opening to specific pages:

http://www.robvanderwoude.com/commandlineswitches.php#FoxitThanks, that's exactly what I want. I never actually thought of just doing a simple HTML file and getting Firefox to open it. Silly me.

Happy new year.

Solve : Looking for Gigabyte Forum?

Answer»

Hi All,

Does anyone KNOW of a forum specifically for Gigabyte?

HarryThey don't have an official one, but you can submit a support ticket here: http://gigabyte.com/support-downloads/support-downloads.aspxHi Kpac,

Before I purchased the Gigabyte MOTHERBOARD, I tried to ask a question using the page you pointed to. Somehow it lead me to a page wanting me to sign-up on Twitter in order to ask a question. Now that I own a Gigabyte, I guess I could ask a question where you pointed me.

Before I made this post, I did find 'Gigabyte Community Forums' from the .uk. I registered there but no one has been able to answer my question. Same thing on this forum, so far. It's a hardware specific question. Will this CPU cooler fit on this motherboard. I also found a Tweaktown forum.

I'll go back to Gigabyte. I suppose there is a chance they might know if that particular cooler will fit on their board.

Thanks,
Harry You could try posting in the Hardware Forum here, you'd never know. I have posted here, but it is such a specific question, this particular motherboard and this particular cooler, that no one has been able to answer it.

I did find the same question on another forum, posted in March 2010, but it never CAME to a conclusion. But, the motherboard was FAIRLY new then. I'm hoping that by now someone MAY have some knowledge.

I found that the Tweaktown Forum - Gigabyte, has a representative from Gigabyte. That's three forums I have to post my question on. That should be enough.

Thanks folks,
Harry

Solve : avast av?

Answer»

i use avast free , and i was on the web going to a cinema site to see what was on and within about 2 seconds avast stopped the site saying it had a trojan , how is it possible for it to know in such a short time periodWell, it simply can.  Why ask that question?  Just be glad that it identifies websites with trojans.

The speed is probably attributable to the fact that avast! sees the data COMING from the website before the web PAGE is actually displayed by your browser.  That's a good thing.  If the detection was delayed until after the page had been displayed, that would PRESENT a more hazardous situation.  So, fast detection is a good thing. "Definitions"

and Avast is just that good Quote from: soybean on January 02, 2011, 12:46:28 PM

thanks soybean , it's just the speed of it that took me aback and as you say avast can see the trojan before it's even on SCREEN , so all or most av's act with the same speed

Solve : Deleting pictures from the internet?

Answer»

I found a picture of myself on someones website that I would like to delete. I know that must not be easy, but it's an inappropriate picture of me and I found that it's rather easy to get to online and I don't want my son to find it. Please, if you know of a way for me to delete this picture from his website, I would be open to any ideas. Not easy to do.

1. You would have to file a suite against the website..
- OR -
2. The alternative is to persuade the website owner to take down the picture as a GESTURE of goodwill.

Before you do either of the above, consult with you local district attorney office  and see if thy have a recommendation. Another possibility is to ask someone at the school where you son attends. This issue may have come up before. If so, the school knows how to deal with it. Very effectively

If you wish to remove the photo without co operation of the website owner. you would have to get the password to the specific account associated the  user who posted the photo. This is outside the rule of law, but you might be able to justify such actions in some PLACES. At the present time., the penalty for getting into somebody's website without permission is not very bad. They may force you to say you are sorry.

But on the forum it is against the rules to explain how easy it is to get into somebody's web account and remove files.
Reputation Defender has been doing a lot of advertising on the radio.  I don't have any experience with them and don't know if they even work, but you may want to look into them (and other companies)?  Good luck!At least at HOME, You should be able to put a block on the site TROUGH your brouser SETTINGS. And if the school is half-way reasonable, they should have a website/file block to keep the kids out of gaming, streaming media, and such. You could always do what Geek-9pm suggested, to contact the website owner and bring it up with the district office. Other than that, it would have questionable legality.

Would you GUYS be interested if I wrote a step-by-step Slow PC diagnosis report?

I'd teach you the top reasons why Windows slows down over time and how to do to FIX it and prevent it.

I think it would really benefit a ton of people on here.

Let me know your thoughts :-)

KrisReally? Thousands? In 3 years? How many thousands? Is this some kind of THING we have to pay for? If so, you may want to review the rules of this forum. That you agreed to when you joined.

Update... What I thought... Kris, I stand to be corrected, but I think you may as well go pound some sand, ol' buddy.

I just cleaned the DISK....when I WENT to defrag, therefore, I did not need to defrag.

What can I do to get this thing to cooperate with me again?
