Solve : Multicore CPU question?

Answer»

Does anyone know if specific cores serve a different purpose than the others in a multicore CPU such as x2, x3, x4, x6?

I have a CPU gadget on my desktop with Win 7 and AMD Quadcore, and Core 1 and Core 4 seem more active than Core 2 and Core 3, while I would have expected the load to be balanced more evenly among cores unless an old program that doesnt support multi-core execution. Or if the cores are picked from whats next available in the core pool for multi-processing that it would be more random.

DaveLembke,
Really, that is a good question. I have just a plain old dual-core and  load balancing is very poor oist of the time. I use Windows XP. That is what the PC came with. It is not a 64 bit CPU, but has two cores.

Checking with the MS site, you don't find clear, concise answers to the question. AMD and Intel do not indicate the cores have assigned duties. The IMPLICATION is the OS and the applications have to be compiled to use more that one core.

Here is an easy to read article. From PCWorld.
Multicore: New chips mean new challenges for developers Quote from: DaveLembke on July 15, 2011, 10:38:47 PM

They don't serve specific purposes, no.

Take a fictitious scenario similar to what you describe. Core 1 and Core 4 sit idle, while Core 2 and Core 3 are being utilized at 20%.

One might think, "well golly shouldn't it be distributing the work so that all the cores are doing 10%".

Thing is, the entire point of Multiple cores is to speed up processing- one of the most expensive operation when it comes to threads/threading/cores is the context switch. Typically, if you have two cores at a given utilization, that is one thread running in each. In order to "distribute" that load to the other cores, The threads would need to be context switched to the other cores, which defeats the entire purpose of having the cores in the first place, which is to prevent context switches.

I think the "problem" stems from people feeling that using more CPU/core% is somehow "bad"; this is covered rather well here.

The same could be said for RAM usage as well...
If i paid for 6G and i see 5.2 being used ...i'm pleased...not freakin out as some do.I see where this is going.
The Fallacy of Scalability.
A number of authors talk about this, but they do not put that phrase on the cover of a book. Would never sell. Nobody wants to know that scalability is non-linear.

Q. If I have to CPU's will I get twice the performance?
A. Do you catch more fish  in a bigger lake?
You need to seriously stop overthinking things...
Just a heads up...I know this is not a scientific comparison, but I had a 3 GHz Pentium 4 which could encode certain flv videos to xvid with 32 bit single threaded ffmpeg at around 30 fps and now I have a 3 GHz quad core Phenom II 945 and it can do the same task with multithreaded 64 bit ffmpeg at 120 fps, so I feel I have a processor which is 4 times more "powerful".
Thinks outside the box-
Wait... isn't there an option to balance core load in BIOSes? something along the lines of Advanced clock calibration...

http://www.overclock.net/amd-motherboards/397179-amd-advanced-clock-calibration-guide.html
I know its meant for overclocking, but if one of the cores is underclocked, you could add voltage/increase the MHz a little to even it up...Why does it matter if some cores are doing more work than others at a particular point in time? I have seen an article (I can't find it just now) which said that the Intel i7 and upcoming AMD Bulldozer cpus allow for uneven core use because it is better for power consumption and cooling than forcibly equalising the loads. They even arrange to unload the idlest cores and shut them down.

We're not talking about either overclocked or underclocked CPU Cores.

Why does it matter if some cores are doing more work than others at a particular point in time?

It doesn't. A lot of folks seem to think they are smarter than the people who do this stuff (building CPU's and writing multi processor kernels) for a living, though. Thanks for everyones input on this. Was just thinking that maybe some cores were different than others vs exact clones of one another given my observation of Cores 1 and 4 being more active than 2 and 3. A bench mark run on the system pegs all 4 cores loading them all up with processes to crunch.

I guess I was thinking that certain cores may have been created with specific duties similar to way back when you had to add a 80287 math co-processor to your 286 in the socket available for the 80287 math co-processor addon for crunching. I had to add a 287 coprocessor to my one system about 20 years ago because the 286 wasnt enough to handle the calculations with some early 3D graphics stuff I was playing with.Maybe you should try about running -
Ten different CPU intensive programs all at the same time.

Then see how the load is.   lol ... nah I am satisfied with what BC stated. Probably just a fluke that cores 1 and 4 are more active in getting designation to handle threadsMy logic was that if manufacturers can take a quad-core CPU and DISABLE a core or two to meet production requests, they could underclock cores to meet power requirement standards.

This got me thinking about logical vs physical cores.

Cleaning registry can help improve computer performance
Well, we'll stay at disagreement here, but that's fine.

Let's put it another way.
If you're experienced computer user, feel free to play with your computer settings, INCLUDING registry.
If you're not, leave registry alone. Quote from: mcxeb52! on December 19, 2008, 06:08:28 PM
Registry to me, is like your roomand if it's constantly being cluttered with junk, it's not going to be pretty. But if you take away something from there that shouldn't be, then if you (or the PC) can't find it, there's a problem.

Cleaning registry can help improve computer performance, whether or not that performance is visible or not and so the short answer to registry cleaning is that your computer will run better if you OCCASIONALLY clean your Windows system registry. So doing registry cleaning with your monthly tuneups with the good programs you have should KEEP your PC tidy enough.

Start Here

Actually for once google did it's job as the top link is pretty good.
Keep in mind the writers PROBABLY know the OS better than all of us here
Again it's not an argument...just a different point of view.

I've never experienced a performance gain with cleaning the registry. And i TEST an awful lot of software Quote from: mcxeb52! on December 19, 2008, 06:08:28 PM

I like to think so as well. It's part of maintenance and if you never perform a registry clean, you will run into problems because of that and possibly slow down your computer.

Solve : How does one complain to AT&T??

Answer»

soybean: Thank you, that helps clarify. I LIKE visuals.

This e-mail thing has got me bugged. I have been using e-mail for years, and I've had different Internet service providers. The issue I have with AT&T DSL service is very annoying. They do allow me to use of their e-mail accounts. But each account can be verified with AT&T DSL service B4 I can use it for outgoing mail. That is the key issue that really gets to me.
To my surprise, some of a free e-mail companies also take that kind of position. They will not let you use their SMTP service unless you register and VERIFY which e-mail addresses are going to use. I just didn't realize.
Also, great majority of free e-mail services do not have any provision for you to use SMTP. They expect you to use only their webmail service. A webmail service is a form of  HTTP that lets you receive and send e-mail without the use of a POP server or an SMTP server. I have gone through reviews of about 50 different services, and just a few offer POP and SMTP service.

Sending mail in Outlook with AT&T DSL
I just killed a good part of my day trying to figure out how to get Outlook (2003) to send mail with AT&T DSL’s SMTP settings. Now, I don’t consider myself to be very savvy in terms of getting networks and internet connections and such to work, but I have configured Outlook several times in the past with various ISPs and didn’t have any problems as long as I had the proper setup instructions. We had SBC/AT&T DSL a couple years ago and email receiving and sending was fine. This time, however, I was stumped.

The handy booklet that comes with AT&T’s DSL modem has these instructions (which can also be found if you Google various phrases such as “Outlook AT&T DSL SMTP”
...
I’m still very disappointed with the AT&T live chat support that I interacted with. Is it really such a rare occurrence for someone to want to use a non-AT&T email address that they never run into this? Or was it a ploy to get me to pay for tech support? Seeing as how verifying email addresses through Yahoo was an integral part of the process and Outlook had NOTHING to do with it, my opinion of their customer support is currently very low.
This was, of course, a few years ago, Things may have improved. Hard to say. I have used AT&T for over two years, On and off.  It is still hard to get the right documentation. The quote above is from a search.

I have found some answers. I will post them when I get is sorted out, It is rather obvious, but AT&T does not tell you. You can BUY SMTP service, but I want it FREE.

Yes, there are FREE SMTP services that AT&T will not block.
They have to be SSL, which is not plain SMTP on port 26.

I will come back later with a list of FREE SMTP with SSL. I am slow, but I will do it.

They will not let you use their SMTP service unless you register and verify which e-mail addresses are going to use.
I believe I've more or less said before that this is non-sense.  And now, I say it again.

I just conducted a test to prove what I already knew but decided to do a new test anyway. My mother uses AT&T DSL.  I exported a POP3 account provided by my ISP (which is not AT&T), emailed it to mom, established a remove connection to her computer, imported the email address into Outlook Express on her computer, and then received and sent messages from that account on her computer.  This involved no contact whatsoever with AT&T.

Sometime last year, I did this with another AT&T user.  In that case, I setup a POP3-enabled gmail account in her email client.  No calls to AT&T to "register" or "verify" which account she was going to use.

Think about it.  Why would an ISP require some kind of registering and approval procedure to setup some non-ISP POP or IMAP account in an email client?  The only valid reason for such a requirement would be to prevent serious cases of email spamming, and they can probably detect that with account monitoring tools.  The ISP's role is to provide Internet access, which would include a full range of uses (http, ftp. pop, imap, etc.); their role is not to rigidly police how customers use their Internet access.

I agree with you on one point - AT&T support is usually awful. Biggest Red Herring of the Year Finalist...... And Then I said, "Oatmeal, are you crazy?"

I think that SUMMARIZES this thread. Are there bananas in the oatmeal ? ?

Cause that would be crazy...I am not through yet. And what does Oatmeal have to do with it?

As mentioned, it is not the POP that is at issue here. You can POP all you want with AT&T DSL. The issue is when you reply or send a mail in Outlook Express or Thunderbird using the SMTP instructions provided by AT&T.

If you ignore the AT&T documents construction and do your own thing, you can make it work.  I have done that, and I want to make a list of free services where you can do that without giving any money. I can do it with the SMTP I got from FASTMAIL.FM, but I had to pay for it and use their instructions, not the AT&T instructions. Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 15, 2011, 06:31:35 PM

You still don't get it.       Why would you seek SMTP instructions provided by AT&T to setup a non-AT&T email account?  That's absurd.  What you need to do in such cases is seek the outgoing server info from the email account provider, not AT&T.  When I performed the test described in my previous post, the account I imported into my mother's computer is one that uses smtp.embarqmail.com for the outgoing server.  I had no contact whatsoever with AT&T about this.  The outgoing server coding comes from the provider of the email account I was using, which happens to be one provided by my ISP (not AT&T).  Quote

You're being mis-lead.  AT&T tech support is lousy.  Again, do not call them for assistance with setting up an email (POP/IMAP/SMTP) account unless it's an AT&T account.  For any non-AT&T account, you need to get the account settings from the email provider, not AT&T. You said it, soybean. I will allow that I am sometimes not too bright. Now in my defense, let me say that AT&T and Yahoo have got a look of people fooled. Here is a direct quote from a support area in the Yahoo mail stuff.
Quote
http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/smallbusiness/bizmail/pop/pop-12.html
Yahoo! Small Business > Yahoo! Small Business Help > Business Email > Using POP Access
I use SBC Dial or DSL and cannot send email from my POP client. What happened?AT&T and its partners have implemented a program aimed at combating unsolicited commercial email (spam). AT&T now filters port 25, which means that many of its users are now required to send email through AT&T's own SMTP servers. If you use AT&T to gain access to the Internet (via a dial-up or DSL connection) and have purchased a Yahoo! Small Business plan that includes email, you will likely need to replace the Yahoo! SMTP server address in your POP settings with an SMTP server address specified by AT&T. See the list of settings.

You may also choose to opt out of AT&T's port 25 filtering program. If you opt out of this program, you will continue to use Yahoo!'s SMTP servers to manage your outgoing email. To opt out of the AT&T port 25 filtering program, simply make your request using AT&T's designated online form. Within 12 hours you will receive a notification from AT&T that you can once again use Yahoo!'s SMTP server to send email.

For more information about AT&T's SMTP requirements, please visit the AT&T help center or contact AT&T DSL support at 877-SBC-DSL5 (877-722-3755) or AT&T DIAL support at 866-SBC-DIAL (866-722-3425).
Is that true? Is it out of date? Can't they give customers the correct information? Why is it so hard to tell them to use another method that does not user port 25. Many mail services allow SSL over port 465. But don't expert AT&T to even hint that you can use another port and protocol.

Some most free email does nnot have SSL. The certificate costs money. So do not expect it from a free service. But there are some. I still searching.

Solve : Help Appreciated on MS Excel.?

Answer»

I need to create an EXCEL spreadsheet with a Sheet for every month of the year.
(I can do that!)
What I am struggling with is how to create a "sub-sheet" within each months work-sheet for every day of each month.

I hope to be able to have 12 work-sheets, each of them having upto 31 "sub-sheets", each of which can be individually edited with that days usage data.

Can anyone offer a solution to this?

Thank you.Well, a sheet is a sheet.  There's no such thing as a "sub-sheet", or sheet inside a sheet.

I suggest you consider other techniques.  One might be to name ranges in your sheets, creating a RANGE for each day of the month.  If you go through this range NAMING PROCESS for a whole month in one sheet, you can copy that to other sheets.

Solve : Video files gone?

Answer»

Just bought a generic 16gb flashdrive , so I moved some of my picture folder onto it with no problem , then I started moving couple of my video files which are priceless to me , because they contain video clips of my son from the day he was born , after all have been transfered (at least I thought so) I opened removable disk F (flash drive) , I see all picture folders in order but my video folders are empty ,the folder icons are there but they dont contain any video .Now I dont have those files on my computer neither on the flash drive .
Can  anyone  help me with this ,is there anyway I can recover those files ?
Please help!
Thank you kindly
Do not copy or remove anything from the flash drive otherwise data recovery will be impossible.

Go to http://www.pcinspector.de/default.htm?Language=1 and download PC inspector.
Install the program and run it.

Click on the red cross after the language selection and click on the top left button "Open drive"
Go to the "Physical drive" tab. Click on "Find LOGICAL drives" and put the lower slider all the way to the right.

Go back to "Logical drive" and select the memory stick. The green V should LIGHT up.

Press the green "V" and you'll see a list appear with "Deleted" and "recycle", etc. Here you can find and recover your files.

This program has a really bad interface but I know it does a pretty good job restoring files from flash drives. You might be able to reach your files without taking all of the above steps.. I haven't used the program in ages and you'll have to learn by trial and error. Once you GOT it down it's really simple and effective, THOUGH.

If your data is absolutely invaluable and you do not feel like experimenting, contact a data recovery service. Prices will be steep: How Much Does Data Recovery Cost? (Click)

anyone? trying to fix inhouse without having to send to shop or hp.

thanks in advanceThe best course would always be to use your warranty here if i'ts still covered. I was hoping you did not drop your laptop. Go to your BIOS settings and check if the Hard drive is still recognized and LOOK for default settings or make sure the HD is booted first. Save and Exit. Look for the key needed pressing on booting to BIOS when first powering up laptop, F1 or F2.This isn't a chat room. Bumping after 37 minutes is KIND of foolish. So is attempting to fix a busted laptop "in house" if it is under warranty.
it is not under warranty any more..few months passed warranty..that was the first thing i TRIED was calling HP and they want $$$ to help me any furthur or to help fix.

f1- system info and it goes to the info screen{no probs}
f2- startup check {memory test passed} {CPU test passed} {100% memory Ok}  {hard disk test passed}

f9- change boot device order_ wont let me change boot device order at all in the boot option menu.!

f10- bios setup options _changed boot order and still nothing goes back to "no bootable device found" no matter what i do it seems thats what it goes back to
Was it dropped ? ?
Remove and re-seat the HDD...

Do this with all power disconnected and battery removed.it was never dropped..it was working fine, i went out for an hour or so and left it on and when i got back it was a blank screen..so i
powered it back up and thats when i saw the "no bootable device found" message.

i tried the disconnect and reconnect of the hard drive and still get same error message on startup

any other clues?

P.S. Re this question "what can a repair shop do for me that i cant do myself." Depending on your personal expertise and knowledge perhaps a fair sized book would be needed to answer that question.
This too could be a long answer "should i replace hard drive..? maybe sumthing else?" Particularly the latter part of it. As to the 1st part of course you CAN do that if it doesn't bother you that that may NOT be the PROBLEM. Getting petulant won't help your cause. A MILLION nonworking laptops are born every day. How do you expect a bunch of strangers on the web to give you a completely accurate diagnosis? It clearly isn't finding a bootable drive. Whether that is the drive or the hard disk controller on the motherboard or some other thing like a cable, we cannot tell. A repair shop would be able to open it up and check the cable, swap a drive in and see if that fixed the trouble. if it didn't, they might suggest something else. You doing it at home are gonna have to buy a hard drive and if that does not fix it you'll still have a nonworking laptop and you'll be out the money you spent on the drive. See the difference?

Your concern touches me deeply.  I removed my third Myspace account, the only one to last longer than a few weeks, a good while ago, probably nearly a year.

I SEE Kyle around a few times a week at COLLEGE.  I think he's over you now.

I BET he still cries himself to sleep for failing the tests I put up for him. Well, not everyone can make it into the great halls of Raptorness. It is no shame. You should tell him this.

Actually, if you'd just HAND over his phone number I'll tell him myself. He will no doubt be most grateful for this!

I sent the files (cda) from a music disc to my burner but it won't play.

you need to either rip the tracks from the music disk and burn it to the other disk or do a disc to disc copy. the cda files are not actually files but rather placeholders that represent the CD tracks on the disc.

Solve : Must restart daily??

Answer» DEAR Forum,
How common is it to have to RESTART one's computer daily? Mine starts slowing down after a day of internet browsing and watching my stock trading platforms, and all I can do to get it going again is restart.
I have never understood this thing about restarting. What does it do, anyway?
Thanks!
Mike
You shouldn't need to restart daily. When you say it slows down, exactly WHAT slows down?Web pages load slower and slower, and email program works REAL slow.

Could I just have too many web pages open? How many is too many?
Here are my computer SPECS:

Q8200 2.33
4G RAM
XP SP3

Thanks!Mine gets about three RESTARTS per day.
So don't complain.   Mine stays on for at least a week at a time.  It's on 24/7.  I'm on win 7 now with 4 GB of ram but I did the same thing with xp and only 1.2GB of memory.  You have something else going on.  I think you need to go the the malware section. Quote
Could I just have too many web pages open? How many is too many?
There are many different browsers that you could try, however, could you tell us which browser are you using and how many are being used simultaneously? Also the internet speed you have will affect this.  So it sounds as though it's just the internet that is slow, not the computer - is that correct? Try increasing the cache size or even a different browser and let us know what happens.

Solve : My download start back to 0% after power cut?

i had an POWER cut and when i switch on my pc most of my download start back to 0%....why and how can i restore it?....i'm using utorrent and i still have all my download filesYou still have the files, but are they still in the same location?  Perhaps you can try removing the downloads in uTorrent (select them and click on the red X), re-downloading the .torrent files, and then starting the downloads again.  With any luck, uTorrent will hopefully start where you left off.

If it doesn't work and your downloads start at 0% again, then there's a pretty good chance that the ~uTorrentPartFile files are CORRUPT or missing. Quote from: mindye on December 15, 2008, 06:21:24 AM

Solve : mimic computer mic amp?

Answer»

Please help.
I am building a device.  I want to use a computer STYLE headset with a microphone.  My computer & the headset work great together.  The problem is that I cannot use a computer in my application.  Here's some more detail.
Part One I have a computer headset with mic & headphones. Works fine with Windows sound recorder. Can record & listen
Part Two I have an I-Pod shuffle. Can listen, just fine with headset or earphones.
Problem: WOULD like to be able to listen to music from I-Pod on earphones & headset & use mic in headset to comment on music. Comments are real time & do not need to be recorded.
Resources: Can make my own connectors & "Y" cables. ART "Tube MP" preamp.
Failed ATTEMPTS: Tried ART "Tube MP" preamp. Tube MP works fine with studio (XLR 48V phantom) mic.

Suggestions?
Ok so you do not want to record your voice comments. What do you want to do with them? Where will they be heard? If the headset portion is being used are you the only one able to hear it? Why can you not use a separate microphone with the other APPROPRIATE infrastructure?truenorthA song is playing on the I-pod.  The student is listening (earphones) & the teacher is listening to the same song on the headset.  When the right passage comes along the instructor can say "here is where the tempo changes" and the student can hear both the song and the instructors comment.  I want to use a computer style headset because they are cheap & there is a large selection.  The quality of the microphone is not critical because it is only for spoken voice, never singing.   Hey, Thanks for your interest.  TomAH Ha ! what you want is very clear now. Of course as you undoubtedly know this is very common technology used in classrooms with one teacher and many students all the time. Although i have never been in a position to use it as a teacher or as a student i do know of it's existence. If i understand the way it works the teacher can address all the students at one time or select individual positions (student) as needed. So you want to EMULATE that environment by building your own infrastructure because you do not have it as it would be available in such a classroom environment. It ought to be able to be done but i do not know if your emphasis (for the cost factor you are concerned with) will be practical given the other things you may also have to do as a result of trying to go the way you want. If you do not require the sophistication of being able to address a single student in a multi student environment Then you ought to be able to do so with a switch device that can interrupt the sound being heard on the music source briefly to present your own message. But what is the commonality of the devices as to their interconnection to all of you?truenorth

Edit: Well, after reading the article, I see some of the others also offer POP and/or IMAP capability.

hmm, I guess I was wrong on this one, sort of; it's a power supply/VRM issue, not necessarily a motherboard issue.

Furthering; bad voltages CAN result in an imminent CPU failure, so I apologize for my passages that claim the song says otherwise.

Hey I just saw the page a long time ago and it struck me as odd that there was actually a MS KB Article like that. I just never forgot about it lol.

You definitely know more on the subject then I do

Here's another KB that struck me as odd. The words "Friendster," "Klum," "Nazr," "Obama," and "Racicot" are not recognized when you check the spelling in Windows Vista and in Windows Server 2008

Thank you Pink! That is just what I needed to jog my memory! I am almost positive you have the right answer. I will pick up a new fan tomorrow.  Thanks again! And for those unfamiliar with this problem, it is indeed an actual song and not computer beeps. Solve : looking for freeware rip/convert/burn audio?

Answer»

Hi all.  New to the community.  Have searched all over for this, tried downloading a few programs but nothing is doing what I NEEDNERO, etc.  Not doing the job.  About a month ago my laptop took a nosedive.  Just before it did so I backed it up onto my external hd, but for some reason (perhaps related to the crash), it didn't all back up.  Anyway, the problem I now have is that I had this great software that I was using to burn cd's.  It was freeware.  It ripped, and burned my music.  In addition would convert anything (music, data, whatever) to whatever format I needed, mp3, wma, and back again.  Anyway, you get the gist.  It was a great little program.  But for the life of me I can't recall the name of it.  If anyone knows anything about it, or knows of another that's great, please let me KNOW.  It's pretty easy to use, you do have to sort of navigate back and forth from one screen to another to convert, rip or burn, but all in one program and freeware.  Really would appreciate anyone's help and thank you so much in advance.Seems like freerip fits the bill.

FreeRIP is an advanced CD to MP3 CONVERTER that comes packed with features. At its CORE, FreeRIP reads audio from your CDs and allows you to save them to your coumputer in a variety of digital formats including WMA, MP3, Ogg, Wav, or FLAC audio files (this process is known as CD ripping  or CD to MP3 conversion). Converting your CD audio collection...I'm guessing it was Audacity; http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Is it possible to disable the ‘Phishing Filter’ from known, safe sites?

Not really and yes.

Does not really MEAN that it doesn't slow down loading web pages and 'yes' MEANS that it can be disabled
Is the only way to disable the ‘Phishing Filter’, IE options/ Advanced/Security/Phishing Filter & disable it?

Why, may I ask
Some of my web site pages are taking a long while to load and I thought that it may be caused by the Phishing Filter

Some of my web site pages are taking a long while to load and I thought that it may be caused by the Phishing Filter
What kind of pages? (flash/html/videos ect...)
An example would be useful too.

Another thing you should know is that slow pages aren't usually the fault of the phishing filter, but your actual connection (if you're downloading anything or streaming videos, your internet can become very slow), the server's connection to the internet or the latency between you and the server. Thanks,
I will have a look at the MS site.
I have received a reply from the two sites that were painfully slow and they are both having technical difficulties.
I TRIED loading the sites after disabling the Phishing Filter but the difference was not noticable.

Solve : Wireless Router Channel Information?

Answer»

Hello People!

I'm here to tell you that if you do have a Wireless router and is slow during the day but faster at night. You CAN Fix this!

If you didn't know there are CHANNELS for your Router. There is a DEFAULT Channel in your Wireless Router Channels list. This channel is probably what is causing your slow speed during the day because of all of the traffic going through that channel.

So to change your channel, Go to the website Labeled on the back of your router and type in the USERNAME and password it gives you. You can change the settings on the Router settings tab on the right side of the screen. It should say "Channels" or something similar to that. Change it to a different one than the Default channel. Now, save the settings. Now you should be surfing faster (Depending on your provider in some locations)

I Use a program that analyses INFORMATION in my neighborhood. So what I do is SCAN through all of the channels, Then find the one with the lowest traffic and switch to that one. Its a pretty cool trick to get away from all of the traffic in the Default Channel.

If anyone WOULD like to add to this post below Here is some additional information:
Change the Wi-Fi Channel Number to Avoid Interference

Solve : Does yoour ISP block outgoing email??

Answer»

Many companies that provide DSL and broadband INTERNET service are blocking outgoing r-mail. No, not all outgoing. Just any outgoing that is not from the account they give you. This is a punishment of the innocent for the the crimes of unknown criminals.

In effect, your local ISO is telling you that if you have more that one of two e-mail account, you must be a spammer. Actually, spammers use hundreds of accounts. The is no reason a typical user should  not have at least ten different accounts with ten different , but legitimate companies.

Here is just one of many complaints about this gowning practice.
Quote

Port 25 Blocking ... e-mail sent via the Internet is routed through the port 25, the channel USED for communication between an e-mail client and an e-mail server. Even though port 25 blocking will probably become an industry standard...blocking allows ISPs to block SPAM sent out through their networks, but it tends to punish the innocent that have a need to send through e-mail servers other than those belonging to their ISP...
This list contains some of the major ISPs that block port 25 on their servers:
AT&T (can be unblocked at the request)
MindSpring
BellSouth
MSN
CableOne
NetZero
Charter
People PC
Comcast ATTBI
Sprynet
Cox
Sympatico.ca
EarthLink
Verio
Flashnet
Verizon
MediaOne

Solve : Acer Computers?

Answer» HELLO all,
Has anyone had any dealings with Acer ?
I have a Acer Aspire X3910. Since I bought the
computer at Office Max, I have had to get a new one
from Office Max. Had a new hard drive REPLACED on the second computer.
And just today dropped off my computer at a Acer authorized tech. With
what seems to be another busted hard drive.
I have had the computer for only six MONTHS. COULD anyone TELL at what point
would Acer cut its losses and give me another computer or my money back.
Or is this wishfull thinking.

RalphG.

If you've had a computer, from new, for only six months, then take it back to the shop where you bought it and get it replaced. Your Rights are with the shop you bought it from not Acer.

Solve : Stupid Virus or Whatever?

Answer»

lol. I know, horrible title. I thought I'd tell a little story and follow up with a question or so.

A couple days ago, my retarded step dad uninstalled my AVG. Sometime between then and an hour later when I got on we had some kind of virus or something. I'm assuming it's spyware/adware. whatever, I don't know the difference but it's so annoying. I get a pop up like every minute or two and my computer is like 5 times slower now.

Everytime an ad pops up, its directed through zedo. I was wondering if ANYONE knows any quick way to stop this. I looked it up and found an article about corrupted core.sys. I don't have core.sys so that can't be it. Anyway I want to format my hard drive but I want some stuff off it first and I really don't want to copy it if this is being so slow.

Another thing is I posted a question asking how to format my hard drive but i'm a little confused lol. JJ 3000 replied with a link but I don't know anything about it. Anyone give me just the nessecary steps to make my computer look like it just came out of the box? lol.

thanks for whatever replies I get to this.have you tried the malware forum?I started some of the steps before posting. But then I realized its probably not worth a day or so of scans and such. If theres a quick fix I'll take it if not I'll just get my neccesary files off and just format it.

The way I look at it its going to get formatted either way.

The problem is my mom SAVED a load of pictures too so its going to take forever to get her crap off here to.

I wish they wouldn't touch my computer. ugh.So it isn't worth a day or so of scans, but it's worth a week of effort installing the proper drivers & applications, changing settings back the way you like them, etc...

Adware/malware is not something you should just "WAIT for a good time" to fix- the longer you leave it, the more buddies they are likely to download and run, slowing your PC down even more.

I've never seen the point in formatting except when installing a different OS or setting up a new HD.

Really?
Theres nothing like a fresh start.
I'm of the opinion that every windows machine needs to be wiped out every 18 to 24 months.
I can tell a major diffrence in the computers that I format. They are faster than they were before.
A format will, also, take care of any viruses that are on the hard disk.

Its not as hard as you think it is.
Your computer might have a recovery partition. When you click on "My Computer", do you see a small partition other than the C drive?

If you need help wiping out your computer, post back and I will walk you through it.

If you dont have an external hard drive to back up to, you can use online storage. It is way easier than trying to back up to CDs.
http://mashable.com/2007/07/28/online-storage/Yeah, I have the recovery drive but I dont know how that works. A good walk throught would be APPRECIATED. I really meant more for my own computers; since I patch a lot of the DLL's to change limits and so forth (such as changing the connection limit in tcpip.sys).

Sure, it isn't too troublesome to repeat, but it is time-consuming just trying to remember what I have applied.

Anyway-

Gamerx365- in order to use the recovery partition, you need to boot from it. different systems have different methods of doing so, but the most common (I have found) is to press F12 immediately after the post, but before windows starts loading. A menu will be presented listing various boot-up options.

Speaking of out of the box- the first thing I do when I get a "out of the box" computer is format it gamerx365
As BC mentioned, the first step is determining which key accesses your recovery partiton. It will, most likely be, an Fkey. Try F9 through F12. Tap the key repeataedly as the computer is first booting up; before windows loads. Then you want to look for an option to restore to factory settings. When you start seeing messages about all of your data being lost, then you will know that you are on the right track.Thats it? sounds easy alright. thanks. I'll try it as soon as I copy all my data.Yeah, it worked out. It feels great just to clean everything off of here. lol.
Thank you very much.So is it working better now?
Most of the time those recovery partitions have a lot programs that just clog your system up.
I would go into "Add/Remove Programs" and delete all of that stupid HP software that you dont want.agreed. Honestly all that cruft they install is the major reason I usually go for a squeky-clean new install when I get a new comp; assuming I have the operating system disc available.yeah I deleted a bunch of crap already. including norton.

Solve : Sony Ericsson cellphone won't play mp4?

Answer»

Alright, so i have a Sony Ericsson Naite, and this has been bugging me for ages. When I first got the phone, the specifications said that it can play MPEG-4 and 3GP video (also stated at http://www.fonearena.com/sony-ericsson-naite_830.html).
If I format a video into .mp4, however, which to the BEST of my understanding is mpeg-4, the phone won't play it. It won't even try to play it, it just REJECTS it. Am I doing something wrong?

(It will play 3gp files)Have tried checking your Media GO installed software compatibility for any other file formats of mpeg-4/mp4 converted from avi? What converter are you using and have you tried other mediums to convert the file? One of my music players is a Sandisk FUSE and it will take most music as is, MP3, etc., but with video and .jpgs it requires a sandisk converter, free on sandisks site.  Maybe you need to look for a converter on Sony's site.

Solve : Computers a NEED in a classroom??

Answer»

of course it is. they have a hard drive and it can get defragmented. Not sure if the TOOL is included with Mac OS.

And as a side note, it hasn't always been included with windows Either. Windows 3.1, 3.11 and all the NT's up to 2000 didn't have a built in defrag. (ALTHOUGH I suppose a case COULD be made for windows 3.1 and 3.11 SINCE they ran over DOS which (usually) had it's own defragmenter.I wondered why they said Linux was not needing defragmentation?

I was told Linux always autosorted files naturally so you'd always be having a defragmented drive without needing defragmenter. But windows doesn't autosort,,,, HMMM

Solve : Double Desktop Layer?

Answer»

Sorry, new here and have an issue with my desktop(s).

Here is my issue, for some reason I have two desktops side-by-side but I'm only VIEWING one. In the past, a few months ago I do remember downloading a program that put 4 layers of desktops so you can be more organized. Though, I properly uninstalled the program in the control panel and removed the necessary folders.

The way I found out about this problem is because my CURSOR can DRAG very far off-screen, and this is the typcial image I get when I PrtSc + Delete button to snapshot background.
Does anyone have any suggestions/ideas on how I can remove this problem?Download and run Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel (http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml). Look for an entry that would be the program causing the problem and uncheck it, then reboot. I'm guessing you did not actually uninstall it.Actually, I thought this whole desktop layers were related to that old program that I ran but ended up properly uninstalling. The program you linked me helped rid me of Real Desktop which was unrelated at the moment but I did need to get rid of. On another forum I forgot to mention I used a program in the past that might have caused this so they told me I should check my monitor setup.

In my control panel, I looked at my monitor setup and for some reason I had two running at once (and on extended mode) which is why my MOUSE dragged off to the side so far. Anyways, thanks for the help.

Solve : Help Streaming Games From PC to TV?

Answer»

I am trying to stream games from my PC (Dell Inspiron 5150  6 YEARS old) to my TV (Samsung LN630).

I have it connected with a VGA cable.  I am able to DISPLAY the desktop background and itunes background from the PC to the TV completely.
However, today I wanted stream a hockey game from my PC to my TV.
I am able to, yet even though I have the game in full screen mode on my PC...it only takes up 30% or thereabouts on my TV.

I wanted to know if any of you have this PROBLEM, and what I can do so the streaming game takes up the full screen of my TV like it does on the PC.
I don't understand because when I close the game and go to the desktop background, or itunes, it shows up on the TV in full screen.
I have Windows XP. Quote
