Solve : How many hours LED burn?

Answer»

How many hours will a 20ma led burn on a AA battery RATED at 700?

JohnIs this homework?

The battery is not rated for constant drain. The book says that it normally is used only a few hours each DAY.

Read you assignment carefully. The 700 bis 700 milliamp hours.
That can mean either 700 milliamps for one HOUR, or one milliamp for 700 hours. It is a product.

Milliamp Hours.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ampere-hour
From the above link you can deduce that Milli Amp hour is the product of milliamps multiplied by the number of hours the battery can last in intermittent service.

Solve : System thinks CTRL key is pressed when it isn't?

Answer»

Just bought a new Lenovo G770 5 DAYS ago.  Running Win7 64bit.  The system REPEATEDLY thinks the CTRL key is being pressed when it isn't.  In the middle of typing a sentence, suddenly every letter I type performs the associated ctrl key action.  The only remedy is a COMPLETE reboot (and loss of data in the process).  I have googled this problem and it seems pretty COMMON, but all I've found are a lot of suggestions (some of them too technical) and no clear solutions.  Some of the non-useful suggestions I've gotten already:

"Wedge the CTRL key up" ~ it is not physically stuck; I have not even touched the key when this happens.  If the key were simply physically stuck, a reboot would not solve the problem.

"Clean your keyboard" ~ the keyboard is not dirty; it's 5 days old.

"Press some combination of keys, e.g. ctrl-alt-alt-ctrl-shift" ~ even if this were to work, I'm unwilling to have to do this every 15 minutes for the entire life of my laptop.

"Download new drivers from your vendor" ~ the Lenovo website is so confusing, I cannot tell what, if any, drivers I should download.

"It's a USB/mouse issue" ~ I am using an external mouse rather than the touchpad, but this has only happened while I was in the middle of typing, not using the mouse.  One thing that did ring bells with this suggestion:  Several times when this ctrl key thing happened, a few moments before, the screen had suddenly jumped down to the bottom of the page, leading me to believe I had touched the touchpad with my palm.  Soon after, the ctrl key seemed stuck.

Also, I do not have sticky keys enabled.

I have been struggling with this for 2 days now, and it RENDERS the laptop virtually unusable for my purposes.  I'm hoping someone here can solve this problem for me, because I really don't want to have to return this computer.
I had a similar issue with a Toshiba a few years ago and it was a keyboard malfunction even though the key wasn't physically pressed down and felt fine when pressing down etc. I was able to work out a deal since I had corporate relations with them with the business I worked for with MIS that I was able to get them to send me a 2nd laptop by having them charge our account, and then credit our account after the 1st trouble computer was sent back defective under warranty. The key that was acting up on this laptop was one of the shift keys, so the user would be typing and everything would go caps, and then they could cancel this out by pressing caps lock on to uncaps..lol... quite the mess.. but worked until the replacement arrived in 3 days.In googling this problem I've found tons of people with the same problem and most report that trying a different keyboard does not help the problem.  Most reports seem to indicate that it is a software issue rather than a hardware one.  I'm shocked at how many people have had this problem ~ I have found pleas for help on forum posts dating back to 2006 ~ and there does not seem to be one single solution given.  As many people have had this problem, I would think that someone would have solved it by now.  I would return the machine under warranty...I've had that problem too, with the CTRL and the ALT keys. One solution that tends to work for me is to push the RIGHT control/alt (depending on the problem) button a few times. Quote from: patio on November 03, 2011, 08:23:47 AM

This. You bought it five days ago. Clearly it isn't working properly.

Solve : HP laptops and batteries, Known problems ??

Answer»

I was wondering if anyone  knows if HP laptops and the BATTERIES are a known problem ?

I'll explain further, about a year ago my Pavilions battery started going south. Constantly powering off after minutes if not plugged in. As usual I came here did several things suggested to try and remedy the problem to no avail. I bought a new battery. The new battery lasted about 3 months and the same thing started to happen. Since, for me, it's not a big deal having to be plugged in I said forget it I can live with it.  My Daughter who is in college also has a Pavilion and now the same thing is happening to her ? UNFORTUNATELY she needs her laptop to be mobile. Mine is approx 4 years old and hers is approx 3, about the same TIME my initial problems stated.

Any theory's ? or known problems.

As usual thanks much.
MP.I am not aware of any issues with HP SPECIFIC batteries. The BIGGEST battery killer are users who constantly keep their laptops plugged in, and only unplug when they go mobile. These batteries to last have to be cycled drained and charged or they build whats known as memory and go south quickly.

What are the model numbers of these laptops so we can google it and see if there are any hits for issues.I only know mine because my daughter is in class I have a dv6 .

Solve : Need info about computer cooling technology?

Answer»

I am working on a project, and I am doing the history part of computer cooling, and I am having trouble finding any large amount of information, I find little things, but nothing big.  Those anyone on here know of any good sources about the history of computer cooling.  I found some info about how they cooled the first functioning computer.  Any help would be MUCH appreciated.   The first functioning (electronic) computer http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ENIAC used tubes, diodes, and RELAYS and took up the size of a building. The first computer was actually mechanical and not electronic to create excess heat. We can only assume that they had ventilation in the building to exhaust the heat, but my search turned up nothing to help

*Actually on the ENIAC page there is a picture showing the ventilation, but no info stating what they used for a system. This system ran on 150kW of power, so you can perform a calculation to come up with a good estimate as to how much heat was produced consuming 150kW. I think APC had a TOOL for calculating heat based on power consumption, since they have server racks and they sell cooling solutions I believe too in ADDITION to mounted fans in 42U cages.

Ended up finding a useful calculator here: http://www.mhi-inc.com/Converter/watt_calculator.htm attached pic below of results for 150kW.

Here is the father of the first computer:

Solve : Event Viewer: How many errors and warnings are too many??

Answer»

While MESSING around trying to solve my problem in the post immediately below, I went into my Event Viewer and discovered 256 ERRORS and warnings. I've had this computer 5 days. Is that an usually high number for 5 days of usage? Some of the errors are dated 3 months before I got the computer. Does this mean there were errors in the initial installations? This is a great place to look for problems. But your system is probably FINE unless you are here looking because you feel there is a problem. Warnings usually repeat a lot, while the CRITICAL ones in RED should have immediate attention to figure out why. Clicking on each one you can find out more information. Do you have any critical ones and if so what are they alerting you to?

Once I saw a Hard Drive was getting ready to fail in a series of warning messages that repeat about malfunction. I backed up my data on that drive and a few days later the500GB Maxtor drive crashed. No, there aren't any in read.  A great number of them appear to be abut a failed extract of third-party root list from Windows update.  The reason I was even looking in there was because of the ctrl key problem I posted below.  Unless there is a specific need to look in Event Viewer, you are best off staying out of it and not worrying about what is there. What protection apps are on that PC ? ?

Solve : Intel late with new CPU??

Answer» QUOTE
Potential Mac Pro customers have been long awaiting updated models from Apple, with the last update to the line having come in July 2010.

Anticipation regarding an updated Mac Pro was heightened back in June as several claims of an imminent launch surfaced. Part numbers claimed to be for new Mac Pro models surfaced a few weeks later, but they instead ultimately turned out to be for new Mac mini models and the Apple THUNDERBOLT Display.    ...

An in depth look into why Apple chose Intel over AMD.
All of Apple's computers, excluding the Mac Pro and the newer iMacs, use mobile versions of desktop processors. AMD did not (and still does not) have many mobile processors that will match Intel's mid-high range, and because Apple is so design-oriented, always striving to cram so much into so little, Intel was the better choice-you don't want your $2000 PC overheating, do you? Or you could put 2 cores in each corner...

It was only until late-2009 that they started to produce iMacs with desktop versions of the C2D.
Apple still uses mobile and all-in-one PC versions of graphics processors for all of its PCs except the Mac Pro. Quote from: austinpce on November 01, 2011, 08:44:29 PM

Solve : Internet TV?

Answer»

Can anyone recommend any sites with free tv with no high risk for viruses .. I got rid of my cable Before we get into sources that offer on-line TV you may not be aware that depending on your home country most networks (broadcast net works) offer their programming on-lne. It may be streaming (live) or in some cases it may be delayed somewhat. I would check that out 1st. OFTEN foreign broadcast sources offer their content streaming (particularly news channels). A Google SEARCH for OTHERS will undoubtedly produce 10's of thousands of supposed "free tv' sites. truenorthHello Redbird,

There are a few to check out. As Truenorth said, you can TRY visiting the network of the shows you want to watch directly (eg: www.fox.com, click "watch full episodes" for Fox programmes, or http://abc.go.com/ and click "watch episodes" for ABC programmes.)

The others are:
www.hulu.com - Free, does have a subscriber VERSION if that is desired, supported by ads.
www.crackle.com - About the same as above.

Or, you could just go the illegal route, of which I cannot (nor anyone else on this forum) provide you directions on how to do so, but an internet search would reveal a great deal of information on this red-area subject.

Solve : Looking for a multimedia desktop, suggestions??

Answer»

Hey guys...

I am looking for a Desktop for my parents. They want to use it mainly for video and photo editing as well as other multimedia tasks.

I am looking at a few options. Their price range varies depending on what they get but I think $900 is cut off. They are even looking at a Mac. What are pros and cons for a Mac here?

I am looking at the following 3 computers, what do you think is BEST?

Are any of these options significantly worse then the others?
A little input here would be wonderful, thanks y'all.  I'm just curious why it needs to be a desktop system.  There are quite a few good SOLID large screen laptops that you can get for that price range.I'm a Dell fan. You get a quality system with quality parts and they have all sorts of deals running during the course of a month. Take a LOOK at their site.Without knowing the ages of your parents/their current computer proficiency/what is likely to be their future development in computer skills/ and a more defined explanation of what this constitutes "They want to use it mainly for video and photo editing as well as other multimedia tasks." my initial impression is that is a very high upper limit as to what they seem to be prepared to pay for what given your displayed choices will offer to them in terms of the technology they contain. They seem to be more in the realm of what "gamers" would want. Very excellent computers are available for far less than that (both desktops and laptops). truenorth Quote

I am looking for a Desktop for my parents. They want to use it mainly for video and photo editing as well as other multimedia tasks.
Do your parents have some experience using a computer for those tasks or are they new to such doing such tasks on a computer?  Are they thinking about some business or PROFESSIONAL use of a computer or would this be for personal enjoyment?

Do you know what software they may want to use?  And, what are the system requirements for that software?

I'm thinking many computers on the market, some well below $900, would be adequate but, again, answers to above questions would SHED more light on this.

The most common question we get around here is simple: "What laptop should I BUY?"
Being a generally difficult person by nature, I usually respond with my own series of questions: "What size screen do you want? How much do you want to spend?" and so on. But sometimes people just want a simple suggestion, based on what I actually like. So, here is a jargon-free list of the current crop of laptops that I'm digging, either because they give you good BANG for your buck, they excel in their specific category, or because they just plain rock...

I'd love to find a laptop with excellent battery life.

Netbooks (at least from what I hear) have really good battery life.

Of course they sacrifice quite a bit in other areas, so I  guess it would depend on what one wants to do with the machine. As long as the keys fit my large fingers. It's such a pain working with an Acer netbook one of my friends brought over one time. I have a Compaq laptop that I bought in July 2007, so I say do not rule out Compaq.  If you really want to keep the cost low, take a look at COMPAQ Presario CQ62-209WM Refurbished Notebook AMD Athlon II Dual-Core P320(2.10GHz) 15.6" 3GB Memory 250GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Radeon HD 4250

BTW, I wouldn't put much stock in http://reviews.cnet.com/best-laptops/.  That "review" doesn't amount to much, in my opinion.  It's much too limited in coverage of what's on the market. Quote from: DragonMaster Jay on October 28, 2011, 07:21:36 AM
I'd love to find a laptop with excellent battery life.
HP Pavilion dv6 - i5, 6 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, 1 GB ATI GRAPHICS, BeatsAudio etc. etc.

Got mine just over 2 MONTHS ago. It takes ~2 hours to charge fully and, depending on what I'm doing, lasts up to 5 hours. Generally I'm just using Word, Outlook, web browsing, coding etc. I still get over 3 hours if I'm using Photoshop or other heavy apps. That's nice!

Solve : Selling broken laptops for cheap?

Answer»

Hello,

I'm trying to find out where some computer repair companies buy their laptops and computers (Broken, and the latest generations) to FIX them, and sell them with profit.

I found many websites, but they all sell REALLY old broken laptops (Runs with Win98, 2000... etc)

Anyone has an idea where I should look?
to find some pretty recent laptops.

Thanks
The best place to look for pretty recent broken laptops WOULD PROBABLY be a local school or library. Most of the time, the schools have broken comps that they will just give away for free because they are so novice and have no CLUE what to do even when simple problems occur.I didn't think of it. But I will check, there is a lot of schools and libraries in our area.
Thank's for the advise !

Solve : External Hard disk?

Answer»

I would like to purchase an external hard disk (budget Rs. 3000/-) and if available with an external-booting facility. What model / type / make should I go in for? Whether the external booting system is available? Can I simply purcahse it across the counter and format it at home myself (I format HDD in my PC).

Any other advice  also is welcome and will be treated as valuable.

[p.s. the above item is for my gifting to a college student who is a relative of mine].

Regards

RKRI won't advise you on which one you should choose, but I will tell you what I have.
I have a Western Digital My Passport Essential 070a, holds 300GB and supports USB 3.0, it's durable and overall, I just have not ever met one better. That's not to say that I have used every external hard drive on the planet, so I would advise that you do some research.Western Digital external hdds are good and they are PRETTY much the standard. If you go to the store, that's probably what you are going to find. I have one 500GB and one 1TB, both I have been using for about a year. I have not tried to boot from them, but I am pretty sure you would have no problem. If you install an OS on it, then you have to make sure that it is an OS that will work with different comps unless you just want to use it on one comp (in which case the purpose of an external hdd would be pointless). When looking to purchase an external HDD a primary factor should be what you intend to use it for. That determination will GUIDE you in assessing the volume size you should obtain. Drives are available now up to at least 3 tb. I have externals that were created from internals that i no longer was using (means putting them in an enclosure). I have drives that were created as externals. My most recent purchase (about a week ago) was a WD My Passport USB 2.0 250 GB. My primary reason for buying that particular one was due to it's extremely small size. I intend to use it primarily with a laptop so it is more advantageous to carry around as it is so much smaller than the other 2 types i also use (not a great deal LARGER than a flash drive plus with 250gb it was cheaper than a 32 gb flash drive). When you do make up your mind as to what you want do some on-line searching for the best price as depending on where you live there can be lots of variance in the cost. truenorth
P.S. Almost forgot the other part of your questions. I formated and partitioned the WD to my liking. Was NOT necessary just wanted my own choices rather than WD's.Just a heads up if you select the My Book or My Passport WD HDD...do NOT install the software for it...
Run it as a native HDD.Thank you friends for your kind advice. It is really helpful.

Solve : 32bit - 64bit?

Would it be possible to convert a 32bit pc to a 64bit pc?? I am wishing to install windows 8 developer preview, and start to create apps, but the only one that comes with DEVELOPING tools is the 64bit OSYou replace the motherboard.
There is no practical way to put a 64 bit CPU into a board made for the older CPUs.
Intel or AMD?
The AMD CPU and motherboard will be a lower-cost investment for about the same PERFORMANCE.
At NewEgg and other on-line vendors you can find 64bit motherboards as low as $60. But expect to pay more for better quality and features.

BTW, You can find great Desktop Barebones under $400 .

No. Unsurprisingly though Windows 7 doesn't come with windows 8 developer tools.

OTOH you could just install the SDK which would WORK on 32-bit as well.

Solve : 56k versus any other high speed?

Answer»

Quote from: John1397 on October 11, 2011, 09:46:24 AM

I am wondering why it could not be as FAST?

A 56k dial up modem transforms digital data into audio tones. You can hear them if you leave the modem speaker switched on. The audio signals usually travel along ordinary copper phone wires to another modem where they are transformed back into digital data. 50k meanns 56,000 bits per second which is the theoretical maximum speed you can move data using audio tones. If you are using 56k dial up over a digital fibre optic phone system then you are still restricted by this.
I can use both 56k and high speed. My question is not what is available it is more of that  with fiber optic cable from a server to my house speed could be increased beyond what is now called 56k on what is just a basic telephone LINE now. When lines were copper it could only handle 56k but with fiber optic speed should be able to be increased still using a basic telephone line.

JohnJohn, even if you have fiber to the side of your house, but you are just paying for basic phone service, all you will get is 56k service.  To get high speed service you will need special equipment from your phone company and you will need to pay extra for it.  Depending on which vendor they are using will DETERMINE what you need for an internet receiver.

ISPs base their prices on what speeds you are paying for, not on whether you have fiber to your door.Salmon Trout answered my question.

JohnBottom line is the speed you get is mostly what you pay for...
Any connection can be throttled down by any ISP...Further to what patio has stated above. If the determination is made to go to DSL for instance. The choice of provider can determine your cost for the varying options given providers will offer at what price. For example in my area a specific telephone company owns ALL the infrastructure but is obliged under Federal regulation to allow competitors to use it and offer their services. Be they long distance or DSL services. Now you can purchase a variety of monthly levels of broadband usage for different prices from the infrastructure owner. The more you want (or use) the higher the cost. However a smaller DSL ISP using their stuff only offers one price for one level of service. It so happens that one option is at the highest usage allowance offered by the other bigger company but at a price that is lower than even the lowest level package of the big guy. I am the only DSL user on this road (very rural) that is using the smaller provider all the others are with the big guy. We all come through the same DSL switch and the same copper wire. As if that weren't enough the big company is very arrogant and hard to get assistance from and the small one has excellent support and doesn't give you the impression that you are bothering them if you call re an issue. So investigate before committing to ensure your best deal.truenorth

Had occasion to discover this radio station yesterday while driving near the geographic location of it. It is available on the web. It is produced by the Queens UNIVERSITY in Kingston ONTARIO. Very diversified programming. From their home page you can go to either live streaming/archives/program info. If you find anything that interests you in their archives you can access and listen to it (other STATIONS i use don't offer that feature). To whet your appetite go to Sunday Oct. 16th 2011 at 1600 HOURS and GIVE her a listen.

Yes, they WOULD see it if you forward it to them.  But, why would you "forward" an email to the person who originally sent it to you?  They have obviously already SEEN it.  If want to reply to the person from whom you received an email, Reply would be the best option, not Forward.

Note: you can remove the fwd but then, to be consistent, you should also remove the line(s) in the body of the message that INDICATE a forwarded message, such as "----- Forwarded Message -----" and the lines just below it that show From, To, Sent, and Subject.
Or if you don't want forward to show SIMPLY Copy/Paste the original into a new message...

Solve : Started with a small problem now it's huge!?

Answer»

I started having a PROBLEM with the computer saying it was low on memory when in FACT it was not.  I checked the resource manager and found the computer had a lot of modified memory in use so I looked this problem up online.  One of the solutions was to go into the bios and enable memory remapping.  Mine was already enabled so I thought if I disabled it then enabled it that it might work but when I hit save and exit the screen shut off.  The computer stayed on and if I turn it off and turn it back on the computer and the fan come on but the monitor doesn't.  I know that's not the problem because the computer is hooked to the tv and it is working fine.  Did I cause this or was it already going out?  Please help I have everything on this computer.  Thank you.Try resetting your CMOS first to get your PC up and running:

How much memory do you have installed? What is the SIZE of your page file?I think its somewhere around 6000 mb for the memory not sure about the page file size thoughThanks for the link now at least its turning on!!Ok, the computer has 391gb free of 686gb (6144mb) and the page size is 5887mb.Are you looking at RAM...or hard drive space ? ?
I think you may have them confused here...Sorry there is a total of 6144 mb ram.  It says between available and cached is 5887mb but it keeps going up and down.  Also I don't have the modified memory problem in safe mode and when I reboot in regular mode it starts out normally and then the modified memory starts to increase until there is no remaining memory and the computer freezes. There are a plethora of options for a HTPC remote system.

You could get an external TV tuner:

or you can simply watch TV through the internet.

Solve : Mystery Power Bricks?

Answer»

I have quite a few mystery AC power BRICKS and transformer cords - meaning I have no idea what items they are suppose to power.   I've searched online by information printed on the labels (company, serial number, etc), but generally come up blank.  Any suggestions?  Much thanks! You could take post the company details and other information from the labels and also post PHOTOS of bricks, their labels and power connectors and post them for people to look at...

You could get a digital or analog multimeter and measure output voltages.

Many labels show rated output voltage and current e.g. 12v 2500 mA

You could do what I do, which is throw them in the trash. Unless you are an electronic HOBBYIST, in which case you will already know how to identify the output voltage and take a guess at the current (amps) rating, there is unlikely to be much USE for them. New equipment which needs a power brick will come with one, and the chances of you ever having a piece of equipment which could be USED with such a brick are very low.

Solve : Two things: CTRL+C plain text, and hotkey to insert text??

Answer»

I've TRIED dozens of programs. I've websearched for hours. I now come to you on bended knees.

First problem: I want to be able to SET a hotkey, that inserts a pre-defined line of text into any text editor. I want to do a bunch of different ones.  Say, ALT+SHIFT+D = [email protected], and ALT+SHIFT+C = I love you too, honey.  I want to be able to do this so I don't have to get carpal tunnel typing in the exact same same word or phrase hundreds of times a week.  I couldn't find a program that worked like this, or I couldn't figure out how to make it work (like AutoHotKey... I read the first page of their tutorial three times and each time I needed an aspirin afterwards), because I am not a propeller head and thus incapable of wrapping my MIND around any language that isn't the king's English.

Second problem: I want to be able to copy plain text and paste as plain text, but I do not want to CTRL+ALT+SHIFT+C or WINDOWS+V. Big no. I just want to CTRL+C, CTRL+V like I've done my entire life. Like I've said, I tried a bunch of them, and the few that let you choose the hotkey, for some unfathomable reason pout and stick their noses in the air when you ask them politely to set it to CTRL+C or CTRL+V.

Thank you and have a great week! For the first problem, I think this might work.

For the second problem, I honestly can't find a solution. Quote from: Transfusion on October 05, 2011, 09:22:03 AM

http://lifehacker.com/5611210/how-to-use-text-expansion-to-save-yourself-hours-of-typing-every-day
This solved the first problem for me -- thank you!I believe that because it's a function of the OS it won't accept it as a hotkey command...
I've been wrong before...many times.I just downloaded AutoHotKey, installed it, and working from the tutorial, created a script to type [email protected] when ALT+SHIFT+D is pressed. It took me approximately 3 minutes*. The AutoHotKey tutorial is written in admirably clear and concise language. I think you should maybe persevere with it. There certainly is a mild learning curve, but once surmounted, the benefits are considerable. A couple of points: HELP sites like this tend to be heavily populated with people who do not have comprehension difficulties around mildly technical stuff; we do not take kindly to being stigmatised as "propeller heads", and such an attitude (even accompanied by smiley faces) may antagonise. Finally, since the current English monarch is a lady, it is at the moment correct to call standard English "The Queen's English".

*proof: [email protected] (I pressed ALT+SHIFT+D to insert that)

Also, I think you are being a bit awkward if you insist on using CTRL+V for pasting plain text only. You are going to have to override the default Windows paste behaviour, which is to paste according to the CONTENTS of the clipboard. What happens when you want to paste a file in Explorer or an image into from Paint?

Quote
for some unfathomable reason pout and stick their noses in the air

A perfectly fathomable reason.

Anyhow, I easily found how to make AutoHotKey paste in the standard fashion with the left CTRL key + V and paste plain text with the right CTRL key + V.

As far as I can see AutoHotKey is extremely easy to use, as is evidenced by the very large number of users and the huge amount of online help and blog and forum material about it.

Solve : cumputer i.d. confusion?

Answer»

we (daughter & self ) have a hp Compaq CQ62. (not a bad little machine for the money) it came with 2 GB memory and we want to increase this. the THING is, the hardware says CQ62-219WM & the software says CQ62-217ca. the software tells us we are running windows 7 (64-bit), but also says we have 32-bit color running on the screen. this is a little confusing for a newbie. the product number is WQ778UA#ABA. 2.2 GHz Intel celeron 900 CPU, systemboard 1484  77.38, system bios F.26, mobile Intel 4 series express chipset family, Intel GRAPHICS media accelerator 4500m video memory, if this is DDR22 memory, (very expensive for us) can we USE DDR23 (less costly). any help would be greatly appreciated.
Travel to Crucial.com and run the online scanner...it will tell you exactly what type and how much RAM that PC will take...
I don't believe you can use the 2nd type you mentioned.

As it is a Celeron CPU i wouldn't spend too much on the upgrade.thanks for the info. is the cpu upgradable?
Depends on what MBoard it is...what is the problem with the intel celeron 900 2.19 ghz. CPU ? & isn't the motherboard the " system board - 1484 77.38 " ?  & just what is the 77.38 part of this number ? This is a laptop, I believe.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/148910/replace_your_laptops_cpu.html
This is only if you can ensure that your laptop CPU's socket is identical to the one you are planning to replace it with. For example, the Core 2 Duo Mobile (Penryn) series require a Socket P Micro-FCPGA (mPGA479) laptop motherboard to function properly. I have a friend who UPGRADED his Toshiba Satellite Pro U500-EZ1321?(forgot the exact model) with the Core 2 Duo T6570 to a T9400. However, the T9400 already costs over $300-if your laptop is already decrepit, I would really go buy a new one.

Laptop motherboards cannot be replaced (with mobos from other laptops) because they won't physically fit in.not interested in swapping motherboards/ I've come across a couple of not so excellent reviews of the intell celeron cpu's. is it a bad design or a reliability issue. was intending to put a 4 GB mem. (1x4) in this laptop. it now has 2x1 1GB mem. Celerons were a budget CPU made by iNtel...if you already have 2G of RAM the performance increase of 4G won't be that much as the CPU is the weak link...
Better to put that cash towards a new PC.thank you, wanted a 17'' desktop replacement anyway.

If you're going to get a desktop computer and MONITOR, why not go with a 19" or larger monitor?  I think you'll find practically no price difference and the larger size just gives you more on-screen real estate.

Solve : music files - more than just tags possible??

Answer»

Is the following possible, or is there a music player that has a feature like this:

I want to ADD comments to a file, as if there was a text file attached to it.
So not just give it a tag like "jazz", but put a comment like "key of Dmajor, whereas most versions are in Eb - guitarsolo TODO: transcribe - check especially the double voices in the bridge" (you get the idea).

Important would be, that if ever I move the file to another location, the text file would go along automatically.
Am I talking about something that would have to be programmed from scratch, or is it out there already somewhere?

OS Crunchbang Statler (Debian Linux)I'm not sure if this is any help, but for mp3 files the id3v2 tag format allows for QUITE long comments. Your comment is 127 characters long; this can easily be handled, in fact I just made a comment 4 times that length using the free editor mp3tag.

Your example comment makes me think that you might be a bit more serious about music than many mp3 users so you may like to know that the lossless FLAC format supports Vorbis tags which also allow for quite big comment fields. There are plenty of tag editors around, mostly free.

You may need to zoom the picture below to see the DETAILS clearly.

Thanks; I didn't know that
For Linux I found tagtool http://pwp.netcabo.pt/paol/tagtool/ and it also has comment possibilities.
I didn't find yet why it doesn't seem to want to touch FLAC, which I indeed use mostly but I can search around a bit more for similar tools.
Thanks again! Quote from: straffetoebak on September 10, 2011, 03:16:18 PM

Solve : Server down time?

Answer»

Thanks Alan and Steve for LETTING me know about the server down time. Server went offline about 3 hours AGO and remained offline for over an hour. I'm not EXACTLY sure of the cause yet, ALTHOUGH based off how it went down I'm suspecting it was another forum database corruption issue that caused the server to get into a loop and max out the CPU / Memory.

Sorry for any INCONVENIENCES.

Solve : Great Photos of old computers?

Answer»

If i remember correctly EEniac was a whole floor as well...but the building was an entire urban city block...

They hired women to SWEEP the moths out from all the vacuum tubes...hence the name bugs was born for computer issues.Moths? Bugs?  A bit off topic? No, early  computers had 'bugs' for sure.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grace_Hopper
Quote

Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906 – January 1, 1992) was an American computer scientist and United States Navy officer. A pioneer in the field, she was one of the first programmers of the Harvard Mark I computer, and developed the first compiler for a computer programming language.[1][2][3][4][5] She conceptualized the idea of machine-independent programming languages, which led to the development of COBOL, one of the first modern programming languages. She is credited with POPULARIZING the term "debugging" for fixing computer glitches (motivated by an actual moth removed from the computer). Because of the BREADTH of her accomplishments and her naval rank, she is sometimes referred to as "Amazing Grace". The U.S. Navy destroyer USS Hopper (DDG-70) was named for her.
How was it off Topic ? ?

PS many of your sources lately are innaccurate at best.I had always thought the original "bug" was a dead moth trapped between the moving and fixed contacts of a relay. Geek's meaning and intentions are often impenetrable to ordinary mortals.

And you would be correct...the moths were attracted by the huge amount of lit vacuum tubes...some ended up in relay switches.

Solve : New Live Rescue CDs?

List of live CDs, modified  August 17, 2011
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote

This is a list of live CDs. A live CD or live DVD is a CD or DVD containing a bootable computer operating system. Live CDs are unique in that they have the ability to run a complete, MODERN operating system on a computer LACKING mutable secondary storage, such as a hard disk drive.

The list was modified  August 17, 2011. Some entries are new.
Scroll down and find:
RESCUE and repair live CDs
You will see not all are Linux-based. Many, or even all, can be used to troubleshot or rescue a Windows based system. There are even variants of BertPE that claim to be legal when used as directed. Some are new.
Overall, and impressive list of Boot able CDs and DVDs . Every user should have at least one in is rescue kit.

Solve : Stuck at "IBM" screen after reboot?

Answer»

I am puzzled about this problem and wasn't quite sure where to place this ? so here it is; Almost everytime I turn off or reboot my IBM thinkpad, it gets stuck on the 1st  screen: IBM Welcome.
I have to unplug it, pull the battery and restart it. Sometimes this TRICK works and sometimes I have to do it several times. Seems like if I turn it off at night, it will fire right up in the morning.
I am using XP and Avast. Malwarebytes is also intstalled.
I TOOK it to get cleaned when this started (It was allot worse!)and my tech. said the hard drive was shot and that it will most likely die the next time, but that has been a MONTH ago. Before cleaning whenever it went in to sleep mood I couldn't wake it up. But now other than the problem mentioned, it is working as a good as the day I got it.
I downloaded Lenova's PC tools and it says everything is FINE. So, does anyonehave any suggestions on what the problem is?  Thanks.Sounds like the hard drive is shot. Thanks!
I changed my hard drive ; Loaded the CD and restart and it is still at the IBM screen and won't go past it, just like with the old hard drive. Could it be something other than the drive? Maybe something else is not recognizing the hardrive?
ThanksAnother note; My CD is turning at start-up and other than that, I think I will just take it to someone that knows what they are doing since I obviously don't! Thanks again for the helpI've seen a COMPUTER with the exact same symptoms and it turned out to be overheating. Blow out the heatsink/fan with compressed air. You should also hold the fan with something so that the compressed air doesn't make it spin faster than it was designed to which could damage it. (toothpicks work great).
