Solve : Don't Let Them Spy on Your Loved Ones?

Answer»

So I wish to start with the loved ones, even though there are other new groups that are going to be using the Net for activities they may not be used to.  But here the loved ones.  The mothers and fathers; the aunts and uncles; and others.

I also want to state that there are older folks that are very good at security, but it might be not too much of a stretch to state that there may be many new older folks using the Net that don't have a lot of experience at basics.  Especially if they are shopping online for the first time.  Or having stuff delivered after doing the shopping.  Other things.

Somebody please help with ideas under "other things".  We have a lot of new folks using the Net because of the medical troubles around the planet.

So what I am wondering is if anyone can help with putting together a list of ways to give instructions to the many new people using the Net as to how to be careful against those bad people spreading computer VIRUS stuff and spyware and all other manner of bad stuff.

This is going to be bad people delight time and so getting out information to stop the bad people has taken on a whole new urgency.

Who knows of material that can help accomplish security for your loved ones that are new to all this?  "Accomplish" means teaching your loved ones the ins-and-outs in a very easy to understand way.  Maybe videos.  Material that uses images can be helpful.  What ideas do you folks have?

Security at its most basic level.  Ideas, folks!  Ideas!!
And to the admin and mods; I placed this here instead of in "Other" because this is about as basic as one can get at protecting people from virus and spyware programs and when people come here to enquire about this topic they will automatically come here first and not in that "other" place.

This is not about "other topics".  This is about protection.Short reply.
1. Do not let people have physical access to your devices.
2. Use secure methods for passwords and money transfer.
Absolutely outstanding!

I had not even considered that most basic of your Number One.

Be careful of that person who looks to be in some sort of smart uniform and seems so genuine that is stating that there is some sort of trouble with a line or connection and they need to check something and so on.

In fact, a theme used in many movies.

That is excellent.  That one never entered my mind. Quote from: MichaelNyby on March 24, 2020, 06:11:38 PM

This is not about "other topics".  This is about protection.

And I moved this to "other" because the Malware forums on this site are used exclusively for people asking for a malware specialist to assist them in ridding their systems of malware. It would seem there is some controversy related to a communications tool that has a commercial name of Zoom?  Do I have that right?  I am afraid I do not use that tool for communications.  Nor have I in the past.

Have any of you used that tool?

Do any of you have concerns related to the use of the tool?

I will also confess that I am not sure if any link to a BBC article on that topic will be allowed here?  I mean something related to the CEO of that company, if I am remembering correctly what I read some hours ago and have a little extra time to place a thought or two here.  Well, those were questions I put here.

Anyway, what's up with the Zoom thing? The ZOOM problem is under control.

But if you are afraid to use it on your PC , just go buy a economy smart phone with a large screen and use it for ZOOM video chat.

Also, you can buy a low-cost Windows 10 notebook from Amazon for about $1140 with a ten inch screen. That is just right for a ZOOM video chat. I am going to use an RCA model for my ZOOM meetings. I got it from Amazon with a warranty.

An no, I did not buy ZOOM stock nor did anybody pay me for this post.

EDIT..
For more info about ZOOM just Google the  word ZOOM and get lots of links. I'm still FOCUSING on tutorials that anyone might know about that could be in a video format, but also text would be fine.

Yes, the idea of not allowing access to a device or records about a device is very good, but there is much more to security than that, isn't there?

And apologies for the lengthy time away, but the medical situation has been not so great and what time I've had for the Net has had to be on other matters.I have managed to get my parents to never take any email or text message at face value, any email starting with dear customer, or as a valued member. Is not to be taken seriously, they regularly get emails saying there Paypal account has been compromise and should login to update their password. Having never had a Paypal account, this is easy for them to spot, but when an email arrives with the name of a company they do use (BY PURE CHANCE) they take it at face value and trust it just because they have seen the company logo and the email looks correct. There are plenty of helpful security guides and tools try this https://www.fasterbroadband.co.uk/tools/data-breach-search this site also has a good list of resources and explains about online scams.  https://www.ageuk.org.uk/information-advice/work-learning/technology-internet/internet-security/. I have recently had my elderly neighbour (80s) conned when they gave access to there PC to a call centre pretending to be from Microsoft. They sent him to a screen sharing website and then took control and changed the password of the PC then asked for £1000 to let him back in. I could not believe that someone could fall for this type of con but it's made me realise that it's not obvious to all. How does the posting of the "Faster Broadband" link aid us in basic security awareness .for the average Internet Citizen?

Although, it does aid me in highlighting a feature of so many sites that make claims of one advantage or another in providing information --- they want your email address.

I view the easily offering up of one's email address to entities on the Internet as more than a MINOR problem when we are thinking about security.  But let us return to that aspect of Internet security at a later date.

I want to go into that above at a later date because I do find the "ageUK" site to be very much worth the effort to look it over.  And I thank you, Pratchett, for sharing that link with us.

While it seems the focus is on us aged types, although we are very young if we compare our age to the age of humans since they showed up on this planet, --- anyway, the "ageUK" site has information that is useful to all AGES, not just us that are a tad older than some of you might be.

Again, thank you Pratchett for that link.

By the way, if anyone wants to do the folks that run "ageUK" a favor, you might ask them to correct their grammar, even though it is a common error.

Down at the bottom of their 'About Us' page you'll see this with the phone number they provide:

Quote
We're open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Technically, that means Monday thru (through) Thursday.  This is a very common error and all sorts of even quite smart folks make the mistake.  I would bet they mean Monday thru Friday.  One doesn't always have to donate cash to help an organization.  By the way, the 9am to 5pm highlights my point exactly --- at 5:01 they probably don't answer any more calls.

One more point, please; I don't want to just focus on us that are a tad older than some of you --- I am thinking about security on the Net for all Net Citizens.  In fact, it might very well be that it is the youngest members of this new Net World that are most at risk.  I don't think there is a law on the books of any nation about a minimum age to use the Net, is there?  It might very well be the very young are at risk more than us older humans. And with the thought of the human youngsters on the Net I went looking and found the following from also in the UK:

Safety Net KidsWhen explaining the security pit falls to parents they couldn't grasp why they are receiving targeted mail when they don't give anyone their email address. That opened up the explanation of data breaches. It was initially found and used as a demonstration, but found the results quite a stark reminder to myself about changing passwords. Admittedly this website could be gathering the data but the results did show websites that I have used. But that opened up another rabbit warren of do's and don'ts. No names but I do know people who use one password for every account and device, and they are to stubborn to change it, they also write PIN then 4 numbers on the inside of a phone case which is in the same handbag as the purse.  LOLI appreciate the explanation, Pratchett.

And you highlight something that should be at the top of the list of security concerns --- the way you handle a password.

And on this one I have big problems!

Firstly, letting any software remember your password on any site or through any commercial software you might buy or rent or whatever that arrangement might be, is way beyond my view as a good idea.  I think only you should know your password and maybe a spouse of more than about 5 or so years and maybe your child of about 15 or so years.  And definitely no cyborgs or machines or software!

And writing down your passwords is also a bad - bad - bad - idea --- in my view.

Passwords should stay in your head, except for a few exceptions noted above and with limitations on years of association. (And that one about restrictions related to years you've known the spouse will certainly get me in trouble with some of you, yes? The restriction on the children seems safe enough, no?  I mean, before about 15ish or a bit less do the children REALLY understand security and keeping some information away from their "best friend"?)

Okay, so how does one go about creating a password that can be remembered?

Yes, do not use addresses or phone numbers or such like that without some modification --- but clever modification.

My idea:

Take a simple word you are going to remember --- like 'rock' --- and turn it backwards to - kcor - now I think you can remember that rather easily, yes?

Now we have the middle.  Next add some number you know very well and turn that around, too.

Here is where you can use your phone number to help you, except them fancy new iPhone thingies from Star Trek have fancy long and weird numbers folks so old like me can't deal with so easily, so we use that normal style here.

Maybe the last 4 digits of a 'normal' phone is 9656.

So we take 'kcor' and tag the following to that - 65kcor69 - Then we throw in * and we have for a rather neat password *65kcor69* and that will be viewed by that fancy software that is checking as close to "strong" and it is a password that if you remember the simple word "rock" and your phone number and remember that all that is backwards and that you added that funny star thing --- well, I think you have a password that is safe and you can remember.  You can toss in an upper case 'K' and 'R' as bookends to the letters and that fancy 'How-Good-Is-Your-Password' software will give you an additional 'strong' to what it was programmed to view as safe --- maybe you get 'stronger' or even 'strongest'.  Or whatever the heck those programs label the password strength as.

And 'site association' can be used to make a basic password built like I explained above special for a certain site.

Okey-dokey, folks; let me know what is wrong or right with that idea up there I am offering up as solution one to problem one of Net Security --- passwords.  Remember, I'm just an old fart trying to help and could have things all way wrong, so fire away, please.

Thank you.

Solve : Zip files/download questions???

Answer»

If I download a zip file such as regseeker.zip and I am not sure that I opened it properly = do I delete it and start again?  Or is it uninstall?  And how do I know I got it all deleted?  Or can I just download it again?  EXTRACT or unzip mean the same thing right? and when I unzip it does that mean that it is now running?  I am so confused.

I have tons of questions and DONT understand all that I read.

Next questions coming below.
KittyI have Ad-Aware.  I tried to update it from the "Update" link, but it does not look like the update took.  Can I just go to the site and download it again?  Will it add another or will it update the one I already have?  I already have Sygate = Can I ad Zone Alarm or another FIREWALL for more protection?  Or will this just add to the memory problem that I had previously on my pc (whole other problem not in this forum.) This might help:

When you D/L a compressed or ZIPPED file .....It's a good idea to D/L it to a separate folder ...( just so you always know where it is )  then once its D/L ...right click on it and select unzip here or extract here .......then it will be unzipped and there will be a install icon ....so double click it and it will install .  If its a program, it will appear in your list of programs .

ok ...if you open Ad-Aware ....then click on check for updates now.......a new window will open and click on connect....you will see the message either new definitions available or no new updates available.
What is your definitions update ......the latest one I have is SE1 R70 12.10.2005      INSTALLED core application  1.06r1 professsional
You can click on the update as often as you wish and it will only update if it is out of date ...so there's no worries there .

More isnt better ......I would stick with one or the other ....just make sure you have it properly configured.

Solve : online note saver?

Answer»

Good Afternoon Everybody.

Is there any NOTE SAVING utility online?? i.e., where i can save important notes of mine, which me only can view and edit (if POSSIBLE, by giving username- password), and no one else can.

One such utility is YAHOO mail notepad, which i can save by logging into
yahoo email address.

Any other??

Thanx.

Schools and universities OFTEN have online learning-resource sites that can have some note-storing ability. I'm not SURE if such things are available for personal, single-person use. Saving it in an email account seems the best option Perhaps one of the Google services would be useful to you, such as Calendar or Docs & Spreadsheets.  See http://www.google.com/intl/en/options/ for info. At this point I think it IP ALIASING but I'm not sure. It only shows up in the incoming log, never in the outgoing. If it's not in the outgoing chances are it is aliasing...Well, the IP address without a zero may also be just the random IP of a Comcast CUSTOMER as well. Sounds like some idiot cracker software got into your ISP server and set up a gimcrack pseudo-web filter. Use your ISP's regular VOICE phone line to get HELP in straightening this out, or use a different ISP.

Solve : putting WMP 7.1 on Win95a???

Answer»

Good morning,

I am using an aging Packard Bell 4610 Legend, Pentium, Mhz 120/72RAM, running Win95a with IE 5.01, SP#2.

Someone told me I MIGHT be able to download and use WMP 7.1 on my system EVEN though it wasn't supported by Microsoft.

I went to this site:

http://www.pppr.sk/rainbow/wmp71w95.html

and followed the directions but couldn't pull it off.  When I went to execute the batch file after unpacking the zip  files I got a message saying I was trying to install something that was not supported on my systam.

Just curious if anyone else has had any success in putting 7.1 on Win95.

Solve : Re: read-writable file?

You cannot CHANGE the FILE attributes on cd-r media. It is a backup to restore the files to the state they were in at the time you WROTE the cd. If your drive and backup software supports rewritable media that is what you should use. You should ALSO note that if you restore files from the cd-r media to the HD, they will be RESTORED as read only and the attribute will have to be reset.

Solve : Odd Issue Android Phones?

Answer»

My LG16C phone has had where I would be in the middle of doing something and it would bail out to the main screen.

Certain games will crash at the same point in them while FB Messenger will crash out randomly. Uninstalling apps and reinstalling give same result.

Pretty sure no virus's running on phones because I have an antivirus running.

So I THOUGHT well I have had this phone for a while I will get one of my spare phones that I never used, and download the apps and performed all updates and this phone is acting the same way. So now I know its not my phone.

The phones are Dual-Core ARM Cortex-A7 1.2Ghz processors and have 512MB of RAM and 2GB Internal storage with a 8GB MicroSD Card added so that I can play MP3s thru it etc.

Was wondering if anyone knows if Google verifies that devices meet the system requirements before allowing installation of apps from their store? To me its acting like maybe the 512MB of RAM may be the issue as for still plenty of free space. Not sure if there is a logging app out there that can RECORD free memory AMOUNT during the operation of the apps to see if I in fact the phone is crashing because the apps are memory starved or if its something else.

In the back of my mind is the possibility that planned obsolescence is at play where apps that ran fine in older versions don't play well with older phones and so that puts pressure on people to buy NEW phones when the older ones don't play well with the newest version of an app. But its unfortunate that I haven't found a way to get older versions of some games that played correctly with my phone and shut off the updating of these games to keep them from breaking.

Last night I even performed a factory reset on my phone to just wipe it completely clean and start fresh and still end up with the same results after all updates and only additional apps added were 2 games and FB messenger.

Might be forced to get a new phone but it just bothers me that this phone works fine with exception to new apps crashing on it. The other oddity is that my camera app in my phone use to have the ability to record video and that FEATURE was removed so it can only take pictures now. Changes like that is to me pressure tactics in the code that if you have a phone of a certain age or older disable the video recording feature so people are forced to buy new.

I looked online to see if there are any system requirement details for apps and nothing found other than what version of Android your running which I am running Android 4.4.2 with kernel version 3.4.0+ and the apps are compatible with that OS version.Well, with 512MB of RAM and 2GB Internal storage, you clearly have a phone with very limited space to install apps and the RAM and processor, in my opinion, also make it quite limited in what it can run.   You store you MP3s on the microSD card but can't install apps on it, so you're limited to the 2GB internal storage for apps, right?

I have an LG Tribute 2 (LS665) that is about 3 years old.  It has a quad-core processor and 4GB of internal storage.  And, about 1 year ago, I bought an LG Stylo 3 (LS777). It has an octa-core processor with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage.

I believe FB Messenger is a burdensome app.  I a bit surprised you can even run it on your phone.

Bottom line: I think you probably need to buy a new phone to do what you want to do. Hello Soybean ...Did you have any issues with your prior phone and apps lagging or not working right that pushed you into a newer phone or just wanted newer or newer features that the other didnt have?

I was poking around online and see no work around to running older editions of apps. The apps seem to be tightly controlled to running the latest version and no ability to version lock them other than to I suppose download them in their earlier form and then keep that device offline forever to block updates that way.

I bought a bunch of these dual-core phones for like $5 each on clearance about 18 months ago thinking I would be all set for years to come since I dont need the latest and greatest technology, and if a phone gets destroyed or lost just open up a package with another one and associate it with my account/phone number etc.

I think I broke even in doing that because my daughter dropped one of her phones into winter salty slush getting off the school bus and my wife accelerated and her phone fell back out of the cubby in the dash and landed into her strawberry coolata which I am not quite sure why the top was missing from that drink which would have prevented this drink bath to the phone. So the $50 spent to have these 10 phones at $5 a piece marked down on closeout from their normal prices of $50 each at the time was a wash since 2 phones were replaced with others due to taking a bath while powered on.

Looked online and saw a bunch of quadcore arm processor phones in the $40 range and will upgrade to one of those, and if I like certain games as much as some games I played on my older phone, I might buy an extra and download the games to it and then shut it off and keep it offline to version lock app/games that I like that dont need to be online to operate.  As wellas if my phone gets lost or damaged I will have a spare ready to roll.

At the low price you paid for those phones, I can understand why you bought them.

My first LG phone (mentioned above), which was actually my first smartphone, was effectively free since Boost Mobile provided a coupon for an amount which covered the cost of the phone.  As I recall, one reason I bought the newer model after two years was to get a better camera.  Another reason was to get a phone with longer battery life.  I may have had other reasons, but I don't recall them at the moment.  I guess, to be honest, the purchase of the 2nd phone seems a bit frivolous as I look back on it. Since I was contemplating cancellation of my landline at that time - and I did cancel it - I might have also have been thinking I would have a backup smartphone if the primary one got lost or damaged.   Cool. Responding here so you know I read your response.   There are crashlogs recorded but accessing them is rather difficult for a non-developer- you need to enable USB debugging on the phone, and using the Android Platform Tools.

However from what I can find, even an OutOfMemoryException should be indicating that the App Crashed rather simply returning to the home screen.

I wonder if the apps in question are intentionally exiting when they find certain features unavailable? Quote from: DaveLembke on September 11, 2018, 10:21:16 AM

The apps seem to be tightly controlled to running the latest version and no ability to version lock them other than to I suppose download them in their earlier form and then keep that device offline forever to block updates that way.
With my two phones, I can prevent apps from updating.   The technique is different for the two different versions of Android.   With the more recent version, on my newer phone, the method is described at https://www.maketecheasier.com/prevent-specific-android-apps-auto-updating/Thanks for sharing that. I found in Google Play the ability to shut off auto update. I was looking in the phone settings itself and nothing was there. But following the instructions from that link for Google Play untick auto update looks to be the solution.

Some EXPERTS answered me: robots. It does not seems LOGICAL. Robots should make random statistics, but in my blog, 90% of the views are from 2 countries, and in 10 YEARS the amount of views per day/week/mount, is almost the same. In another blog, no views at all. The robots love 1 blog better than the other?

Solve : How to make customer support Worse. Or Better?

Answer» How to make customer support worse.

If you want to make your technical support center even worse than it already is here is a simple formula. Stop hiring people that know what they're doing and higher a few smart Alec's were telling you he can be all done with computers. Have them prepare a whole list of hard to understand forms and menus and put that up on a website and tell the people this is their new improved support plan.

Of course, it is sure to fail. The only way you will know that it is failing is when people stop buying your product because they've been receiving negative reviews on social media. Stop and think about it. People RESPOND the people more than may do computers. Although this seems to be a group of people who think that computers are better than people for solving problems that people have. Don't listen to them. They will destroy your business.

I've had some difficult times with my local bank and with a software company whose product I really enjoy. In fact, I am using their product right now to dictate this complaint. Fortunately, the program will allow me to more uses until it shuts down completely because I cannot fill out their insane act vacation requirements. Actually, I have activated the program and I am still the same person and this is still my computer.

The problem is my computer has some hardware issues and also it sometimes PICKS up malware. This means that from time to time I have to install my operating system on a clean hard drive and reinstall my favorite programs, including this one.

Unfortunately, there is no easy way to let the activation center know that I am the same person and that I am not making an extra copy of the program to sell to somebody else. I'm just reinstalling it on my computer.

And yes, I do have a login to get into the support, but I have lost the password. That's what happens when you have to wipe your hard drive and start over again. Most of my data is backed up, but some of the password lists are not complete.

How to make it Better.

Those COMPANIES out there that are considering improving their help center should follow the example of MICROSOFT. Microsoft makes it fairly easy to activate a program or an operating system purchased from Microsoft. Once the program has been activated, it is not necessary to go through a lot of trouble to reinstall it on the same computer. Somehow Microsoft has a way of knowing that you're using the same computer and that you have not copied their program or operating system on to somebody else's computer. Other companies need to follow that example and do It the Way, Microsoft does.

But in the event that something does go wrong, Microsoft does have a phone number that users can call in and talk to a real person. In some cases that is the only way to solve a problem person has. This is especially true for individuals that have some additional problems, such as other people interfering with what they're trying to do and hardware that doesn't work right. In that case you can call Microsoft directly and talk a real person and to explain to them your real problem that is not listed on a form or FAQ.

By the way, the product I am using is called Dragon naturally speaking. When the activation fails it directs me to the website and proceeds to forget what program I am using. How can it possibly forget what program I am using?
I would contact Nuance directly, and I used to be able to do that, but I can no longer find a support more number where I could call somebody directly at some convenient time and talk to real person. APPARENTLY someone has decided to keep that information secret.
End of rant.

What about you?
Have you ever had this kind of non-support incident?
What good examples can you name?

Solve : Help Needed on which program I can use?

Answer»

Hi
I'm not sure if this is where I should be posting for this sort of help....I am a bit of a novice regarding programs.
I have recently become secretary of my local bowling club and would like to advise our members on upcoming events on the TV in the lobby.
I would like to be ABLE to put the info on a USB stick which I can update weekly and then plug it into the TV.
I would be obliged if anyone could tell me if there is a program I could use to do this or please tell me if I shouldn't be asking for this kind of help here
Thank You
ASRWell if your TV has a option to display pictures for a SET period of time and then move on through the folder of pictures as a slideshow that is one way to do this.

If the TV requires you to manually select each image to view then you would want to have a computer such as one with a HDMI port to cast the output of the computer to the tv set through its HMDI input. One of my favorite slide SHOW programs to use is Power Point to which you can create really good informative slides and have them set to a timer for each slide to show for a set period of time and then move to the next, as well as you can have neat animations happening that draws the eye to the screen to see whats there vs a static picture with no movement or text showing up creatively to the screen. If you have Microsoft Office you would have access to power point. If you don't have Microsoft Office and willing to use an open source free program to do this then your choices are Open Office or Libre Office to which Impress can be used. https://www.libreoffice.org/discover/impress/

Lastly if your TV has a VGA port to connect a computer to it, you can use this to display the slideshow from a laptop or desktop computer; however, VGA can not display the higher resolutions as HDMI can and so HDMI should be used instead of VGA if you want sharp picture quality and are casting the slideshow to the TV from a PC.Thanks for your reply
I do have Powerpoint (2003) and I never thought of using it because I was looking for something to run independent
of a computer. Anyway you have given me a couple of ideas and I will see if I can work out something.
Thanks again

As soon as this program enters computer, it starts displaying CONTINUOUS alerts that report about different kinds of errors. Please, be very careful with Mr PC Cleaner because it may be just another potentially unwanted program, which seeks to earn the money for its creators. Besides, be very careful with the registration on this site because it may be used to collect PERSONALLY identifiable information, such as names, telephone numbers, email addresses and similar. ...

There may be other variants of it that go by others names. I am not sure of that. It seems that there is some deliberate confusion as to just what that program is and does.

If you have visited cleanpc365.com, you may have NOTICED that the layout of this page is almost identical to mrpccleaner.com. This is because both of the sources promote the same application. You certainly should delete Mr PC Cleaner related programs which you have no desire of running on the operating system. Do you know how to remove software which is categorized as PUP (potentially unwanted program)?
From the above you see  Mr PC Cleaner becomes installed with the name CleanPC365 and leads to user confusion.

Solve : mySQL and Bad RAM?

Answer»

Just sharing how I thought mySQL would be pretty solid given that its a transactional database on a laptop i have that I was building data with parsing info online that is public domain and dropping the data into my database to run an analysis on. I knew using this laptop that it has a RAM stick that failed MEMTEST86 but otherwise it never CRASHED and acted fine. The reason to run MEMTEST86 on it was because I run it on all systems I get just as a QUICK test of system health. The RAM in this system didnt fail every test loop, but like 2 out of 6 would show a pattern mismatch.

So I used it mainly because it otherwise never crashes on me and never shows any signs of illness and it was the closest laptop to grab and load up to run this project that I have.

Well after 9 hours of running all was going good. I went to end my program that I had to automate and gather info and thats when the BSOD hit. Upon reboot of the laptop, I went to start mySQL which I have set to manual start for the service and mySQL shows many error messages but the mySQL database is up and running.

Before messing around in the database I performed a backup of it performing the alldatabases dump and it completed that way to quickly. The dump of all databases usually takes about a minute and it completed in about 8 seconds. So I looked at the alldatabases SQL dump file to see how far it got before it bailed out to see what table etc it was dumping when it hits the alldatabase dump to sql backup fail condition. Wrote that down and looked at the log file and saw the error messages.

So then went to perform a database repair in which I thought mySQL had like a shadow copy feature where it kept a previous good state which the repair could be run from, to rebuild the database but I was wrong. It seems as the only way to maybe protect myself from a total trashing of the mySQL database is to have multiple machines running that database with a master-master mode or a cluster with a team of systems to handle this. However... if you have one server that has BAD RAM, I am curious if it would poison the other healthy systems database mirrors since rules are thrown out the door when RAM goes BAD. It might just crash that one server system that had the bad memory and the others that are healthy keep the database up, but it could also allow for corrupt information from a bad memory stick to write to all other systems databases and one bad apple spoils the bunch.

Curious if anyone knows the answer to this, if bad memory on one system can poison the other systems databases through replication to where having redundancy isnt even a cure for a problem like this? Is there any fail safe to a system turning rogue when it loses its mind due to memory error(s) to protect the other systems such as a check into the systems health before replication of data between systems? If something like this doesnt exist to test health of systems it could make for someone a neat little fail safe project program to work with mySQL or MARIADB etc to test another systems event logs for signs of trouble before a replication interval maybe, however a RAM faulire could happen during the replication process in which its not detected.

The good thing is that I didnt lose all my data to have to start from scratch. I perform a dump after each time running this so i have a restore point to continue to build from. But 9 hours of processing was lost because I was to trusting in a system that otherwise behaved even though memtest86 warned me to steer clear of using this system for anything important.

Just replaced the BAD Samsung ( 2 x 1GB DDR2 533Mhz ) RAM sticks with another set of Known Good Kingston ( 2 x 1GB DDR2 533Mhz ) KTD-INSP6000A/1G RAM sticks out of a parts donor but otherwise healthy but extremely to weak in processing power single-core Celeron M to install into this for more processing powerful Core 2 Duo laptop and running a MEMTEST86 on system now to verify that the RAM issue is fixed and not memory controller related. There is no realistic fault-tolerance for any database system if memory errors cannot be detected, except to have say daily backups from the database itself, and hope to be able to go back to before said corruption.

"Real" database servers will have ECC Memory. (They also don't usually run on old, second-hand/third hand laptops and desktops... ) Memory errors will cause hardware failure before they propagate to the database. In most such servers those sorts of errors fall under the same as too many Fans failing, in that the system shuts down. So as soon as memory starts to have issues, suddenly the system starts to die and you know immediately that service is needed. Basically as soon as it becomes unsuitable as a database server it would die.

While the system is running it replicates to a second server. That second server acts as a fail-over if the first one dies for any reason. Because the first one won't replicate memory errors to the second memory errors cause instant SHUTDOWN, the fail-over can be considered reliable.

And that second one can have a third fail-over and so forth depending on how much reliability or how many failures can be expected. Thanks for that info BC ... Now I realize the importance of a server grade system vs a standard off the shelf computer for database servers. ECC Memory has its advantages for Error Correction that standard computers dont have.

I have a Dual DualCore-CPU server with 16GB  ECC RAM that I could use I suppose, but its power hungry, so I think I will take my chances with this system with the new good used RAM in it that passed 10 of 10 full tests. The server has a 1000 watt power supply in it and consumes about 365 watts when idle. The Core 2 Duo laptop uses about 52 watts of power, so in 9 hours of runtime the consumption of server is 3.285kW and laptop is .468kW. If the project was mission critical then sure I'd pay the power company more money to run this, but its worth the risk of another crash with this laptop for now, and I doubt it will crash again as for MEMTEST86 shows this pair of memory sticks installed today as being healthy whereas the other pair of RAM that came with the Gateway laptop failed 2 out of 6 full tests with a pattern mismatch at the same memory address in the 632MB block. Its not for a business or anything like that, its just information gathered and then reports are created after that show statistical info.

Cost comparison based on 15 cents per kWh shows the server using 49.3 Cents of power in what the laptop can do for 7 cents.

If it was a business project where its mission critical, I'd pay the EXTRA to be safe I suppose.

When I go there I get a pop-up on the right with a different price.
What is the CATCH?

EDIT: The link I gave is a seller. It was not obvious at first.  They are likely NFR keys stolen from a manufacturer or places like MSDN.Yeah, they aren't going to be keys that are allowed to be sold.  They will more than likely work but the keys will have been acquired from something like MSDN or OEM keys ripped off of scrapped machines.  By buying these, you aren't funding Microsoft, you're just giving money to the seller.  The copy of Windows will most likely activate and work but it's no better than running a pirated copy.

The key thing to remember is that for Windows licences, Microsoft sets the pricing.  If someone is selling them for huge discounts then the seller is either being very generous and selling them at a huge loss or are selling dodgy keys.  You can also often spot in the fine print of the listings nonsense along the lines of "This is a genuine key recovered from a scap PC.  As per eBay's terms and conditions, you may collect the scrap PC at your expense" - Even with that nonsense disclaimer talking about a PC that almost certainly doesn't exist, the key is still not permitted to install on any other machine. You said:

The version of Windows 10 Pro was a pre-NOVEMBER 15 version. Original installation was OK, but it HUNG up when it got to the November 15th upgrade, which was equivalent to a complete reinstall. It took me 2 months of working with MS, trying stuff suggested by the internet, etc. I finally downloaded the Nov. 15 upgrade to thumb drive and installed it from the USB. Since then, everything works great. I think that Win 10 Pro is far superior to Win 7. I suggest if you buy a Win 10 DVD, get one made after Nov 15 2015. Any download from MS (if you just purchase the key code) now should be OK.

Solve : A growing need for Cobol programmers ??

Answer»
I was listening to IT Conversations with Jeff Papows (ex-CEO of Lotus) was discussing his new book Glitch. He discussed how computer issues can cost a company millions and reviewed reasons for these problems including a lack of well-trained programmers.

He states that all the COBOL programmers are starting to retire and COBOL is not a sexy enough to draw in new programmers.

I'm a new student and wondered if this would be a good language to learn a little about. QUOTE
I'm a new student and wondered if this would be a good language to learn a little about.

Not much use in learning a little about any programming language, whole HOG or nothing.  As for learning Cobol, only if you are expecting another Win 2k debacle.  The only retro language I'd RECOMMEND is Assembler.

Good luck.
ASM is not a "retro" language. It's still used extensively, on it's own as well as linked in with object modules from other languages, as well as MODERN programming languages even providing a way to insert ASM directly into their source files.

COBOL,FORTRAN, APL, etc and other older high-level languages are, for all intents and purposes, dead. (not sure what a win2k debacle is). Visual Basic Classic (1 through 6) surpassed COBOL as the language with the most estimated lines of code written, and over three quarters of the installed COBOL systems had been replaced with VB5 or 6 business objects.

Now, Visual Basic 6 is dead as well, and those components are being replaced with .NET components. Although some die-hard advocates have created things like COBOL.NET that works with the .NET run-time, it's still held back by it's relatively ancient roots in mainframe programming.

It's always good to learn about the history of programming languages. As well as what they brought to the table. But there will not be a need for COBOL programmers. The fact that the COBOL standard is continuing to be revised and there are development cases where COBOL is chosen is not a precursor to some world-wide COBOL craze. COBOL is still playing catch-up with modern languages, in many ways.

As far as history is concerned, As I noted, it's important to know what they brought to the table; Haskell, for example, was one of the first languages to support functional programming. COBOL was the first high-level language to support self-modifying code. Perl essentially single-handedly put regular expressions on the map in terms of programming; before that it was usually just used in shell-scripts. It's good to at least read a few paragraphs about a vast number of programming languages, to see features they all have in common as well as where they differ; it's important to recognize the strengths that each language has, and how such strengths have essentially been nullified since that languages inception.

I'm always amazed to find how much FORTRAN and COBAL are still in use.  These are mostly older systems that companies are trying to get one more year out of.  I thought they were totally dead years ago, but some how they keep on grinding away.  But at some time in the near future they will be gone.

In the short term, there will be a need for programmers who understand COBAL, and are able to put band aids on older programs, but the long term outlook is bleak.  But then I also heard that same comment 20 years ago so I really don't know.COBOL, not COBAL

DOS is still used extensively in some places, too. because it works. Quote from: BC_P

Answer»

I have an old HP printer & an old e-mac, but, apart from the slowness, no problems.    Printer:  Hewlett Packard 5740 printer.   I have 2 HP cartridges in place - a #97 lge. size color cartridge & #97 BLACK cartridge.  I have been printing, the cartridges are not low on ink. - Now suddenly I am getting a blinking light on my printer & a printer message on computer saying that the black ink cartridge is not compatible with my printer.  I have taken it out, reinstalled it - still the same message.  I have been printing with it right along - now this message & there is seemingly no way to over ride it.  the cartridge is fine, it the right model # 97 - I've been printing with it!  Any help appreciated - short of giving up & buying a new printer, I don't know what to do.  This is crazy! There are a great number of options for you to try and overcome this issue. I accept that ALL the equipment involved is unchanged and has worked properly in the past. The easiest attempt would be to replace the black ink cartridge and see the result. The next would be to take the black cartridge to an ink refilling station and have them reset the microchip (if it has one). You can also TOTALLY uninstall the printer hardware/software and reinstall it. This method should ONLY be tried if you have the manual and the original software installation DISK. Or if you can find both as available online. Because as if you say the printer is old finding the appropriate drivers for it  online now may not be possible. Without going into DETAILS (because for some reason most ink jet printer users are intimidated by the process) you can also purchase the materials to replace the cartridge/chip and bulk ink/hardware to do all this yourself. You need to be aware that any costs to try and resolve this issue with the same printer should be weighed against the purchase of a replacement. Printers by in large are almost FREE in order to sell the cartridges. If you do go for a replacement be careful to ensure that it will be compatible with your Apple computer model.truenorth

Solve : How can I print out a Kindle download?

Answer»

Hello,

how can I print out a book that I downloaded on Kindle?

ThanksFrost, consult thew documentation. (Are you allowed top print copyright MATERIAL?)
NEXT, consider what KIND of printer do you have.
If it is an HP, you can look in the Amazon store and find a Wi-Fi printer App for most HP printers that have wireless.

Of course, you will have to set the HP printer to use Wi-Fi instead of the USB cable.

Here is how you can search for the App using Windows:
Google  print from kindle FIRE to network printer

One link is this: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03933792

You can ALSO find similar Apps for Epson and Cannon wireless printers. Thanks for the info Geek.Your are welcome.

Solve : PC Shuts down playing games?

Answer»

So ,i started having this problem since the past year ,but it's getting even worse. When i start playing any game ,after some minutes my notebook freezes for 1-2 seconds and then shuts down completely without showing any bluescreen or error. I have this notebook since 2012 and never had this problem before ,just started a year ago like i said. Here some games that i tested that shuts down: Aura Kingdom (Aeria Games) ,Age of Empires 3 ,Pokémon Revolution Online ,and League of Legends (only at the end when the victory or defeat SCREEN shows up ,if i ALT + F4 before it shows up ,the pc doesn't shuts down).
No ,it isn't HEAT problems ,because i tested with CoreTemp64 and i got like 65~70º.
My drivers are up-to-date and i already done ALMOST everything i found on the internet ,my specs are on this .txt thou.
I need help x(

[attachment deleted by admin to conserve space]Remove the laptop battery and then run it directly from the power supply. Does the problem remain?

Have you run memtest86 to make sure RAM is healthy?

65 to 70 C is actually quite warm. Temps will plunge quickly when getting out of a game and can spike quickly above 70C when in game. If you use speedfan there is a graphing ability to graph the temp(s). And if you can run a game without crashing and check on the graph by minimizing the game or ending the game after a few minutes, you can see where the temp capped out at. The problem though is that if it crashes and shuts down your temperature data is lost and you have to try again to capture your temperature cap.

Make sure all cooling vents are free from dust ETC so its not a thermal condition shutdown which will happen fast when too hot.
I've runned memtest86 and it shut down at 20~30% ,i oppened my pc and my fan was with a bit of dust ,but nothing big :/Does it run without battery and powered off of the wall through power supply? (*asking about this because a weak power supply can cause this with combination of a battery that isnt able to keep up. ) The situation being the laptop in use and the draw greater than that of the power supply, and the battery compensates, but when the battery runs out, the system drops like a stone and shuts off. Yes it doesIf MemTest shut off by itself you have faulty stik(s) of RAM...Everything is pointing back to thermal protection type of shutdown. It never shuts down on its own when idle, only in games or heavy CPU use such as Memtest86 did. Never seen a faulty stick cause a shut down, but i would test what Patio stated by removing 1 of 2 sticks if it has 2 sticks in it and see if you can pin point 1 of 2 sticks that has an issue. If you only have a single stick of RAM it will be hard to test this.I didn't removed any RAM stick thou :s
We never stated you did...it's for testing purposes...What do i do then? Remove a ram stick? o.oI tested removing a stick and leaving another ,in the first one ,after 5 second ingame ,the screen WENT back but the music continued with the pc on. I turned off ,then i tested the second stick ,wich after 10 minutes ingame the computer shut down.
I saw a bit of the error that appears before shutting down (i'm trying to get a pic of it) but i saw something like "reg/reg/noname"Hello ,anyone?Sorry this went quiet... I was away for a few days...

A corruption like error before a shutdown is very odd especially since memtest86 also shutdown and it doesnt even run from the hard drive.

Your hardware seems ill with anything that loads down the CPU. If its not heat related and RAM related or battery or power supply related then it points to a bad main board that for some reason when under a heavy load falls flat on its face.

At this point the last resort other than a new main board or getting a replacement computer would be to make sure the thermal bond is good between heatsink/heatpads and the GPU and CPU as well as if there are any cooling fans that are not quite spinning up to full speed to replace the cooling fans.

I have yet to see a system shutdown for a fan speed error with a fan that is spinning, BUT there is nothing to say that the system is happy idle and  its not until temps rise and the fan is triggered to run and doesnt that that is when it drops out. However it seems to run for a bit before shutting down and well if it was a fan that never spins, it should shut down much faster than that unless the fan is spinning and then stops spinning due to some dust bunny etc or bad bearing in fan and then the system panics when there is no fan tach detected and it shuts down to protect itself.  So the solution is to buy a new PC ?  Quote

So the solution is to buy a new PC ?

It might be unfortunately as for if you have gone through all the trouble spots and verified they arent the cause, it leads to main board issue as being the only component not swapped out to resolve the issue.

Highest Probability as cause to lesser probability cause trouble locations:

Thermal Issue - You confirmed its not overheating
Fan Issue - Fan is stopping or not up to speed and system shuts down, you confirmed this isnt the case.
Battery or Laptop Power supply issue - Greater power demand of system and systems battery and/or power supply unable to keep up, you troubleshot this and it didnt point out trouble spot.
RAM - Hard Fault causing shutdown as Patio suggested, and it shutdown in the middle of memtest, you tried 1 stick and then the other with same results.
Corrupt Installation/Hard Drive - *The i saw something like "reg/reg/noname" looks like a drive file corruption, BUT this is probably the result of another issue as for memtest86 never runs from hard drive and the system shuts down, so the crash /shutdown is not the direct result of a corrupt windows build. Memtest86 stresses the RAM and runs the CPU at 100% which causes for heat creation, so it makes the issue point to thermal, but thermal was ok, so then it must be a hardware failure on the main board is what it points to.
Cooked GPU that only acts up when stressed - Usually you get signs of this being the case in which lines or artifacts are displayed before crash or shutdown as a hardware fault.

In this case, if there is a computer shop nearby that arent crooks you could have them diagnose it, Bestbuy can diagnose if you dont have a regular computer shop. I kind of cringe at Bestbuy selection but its BETTER than nothing. Not sure what Bestbuy charges, but local computer shops out my way charge $90 USD to test and give the customer a diagnosis. Very few offer it for free. At $90 it might be spending 25% the cost of a new computer to diagnose and then still have to buy a new computer in the end.

Sorry I dont have better news on this one.

Solve : Having trouble with video files on Vizio tablet?

Answer»

I'm not sure if this is the right place to ask, but I picked up a Vizio 8 inch tablet for my daughter for Christmas.  So far she's been loving it, but I am not having any luck with transferring movie files to it.  First I tried uploading one of those 'digital copies' that come with dvds and blurays these days, and I got the message that it could not be played.  I then downloaded a program called 'Handbrake' and tried converting that file to an mp4, but it seems like it can't or won't finish the conversion.  I am in the process right now of trying to convert an avi of another movie I have to see if that will work.  I THINK my main question is why do those digital copies not play on the tablet?  In the file properties they are listed as wmv files which is a format that the Vizio tablet supports, so why doesn't it work?  What am I missing here? When converting with HandBrake are you using the standard FFMPEG medium-quality .mp4 preset or are you using the H.264 .mp4 preset? There have been REPORTS of the mid-quality preset failing to work on various versions of HandBrake.

http://vizio.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/204/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvdGltZS8xMzI1NDE3MzI3L3NpZC9zMVVzNDJOaw%3D%3D
WMA, WMV, AVI, MP3, MP4, JPG, JPEG, AAC, ASF, 3GP, H.263, H.264.
It supports AVI natively too...

As for the WMV files not PLAYING... perhaps there may be a sort of DRM protection preventing you from copying the files to an external device? You said they come with the DVDs...
http://www.buzzle.com/articles/how-to-remove-drm-from-wmv-files.html

Yeah try converting the movies you have again and post results.

Happy New Year!Don't know if this is relevant to your tablet however recently i was attempting this on an Mp 4 player (transferring video) and noted that not only is the file format LIMITATIONS a factor but also the resolution size was also limited to specific criteria. Is that a factor here? truenorth

Have you created a bootable ghost CD and tried that ? ?
Is the image a valid Ghost file ? ?Ghost Version: 8 for 32 bit
the image was built on the same version coz i tried to ACCESS it minutes after backing up with the same ghost software.
yes it is, and i used BART PE for the ghost back up, i havent tried the bootable ghost disk. Quote from: charezTech on March 09, 2011, 07:49:48 AM

Ghost image is corrupted, create image again.I've used Ghost since 1995.

You MUST do a CRC check on EVERY image you make whether to

HDD or to CD/DVD.

If it fails, re-image and check IT.

Ghost will NOT allow a bad image to be restored, so it's USELESS.

i dont download videos' so my question is can i use my G video the same as my E drive and pu my documents etc in it .
You probably can, but generally most people just save programs, apps and personal data to the C:/ drive.

To avoid confusion, can you  -

List all the drives and there size ?Actually, most experienced USERS separate data from programs, keeping the OS and certain programs on c: and all data on other drives or partitions. That makes backing up data easier and protects against losing that data in the EVENT you need to reformat the system drive / partition.thanks to both of you i will go with what you have said.

Solve : Talking computer in Spanish?

Is there a program either from microsoft or other that will do the same thing as microsoft sam the computer default voice where you type in the words and it speaks them back in English  except I would like Spanish instead?

JohnOn the following LINK go down to "TECHNICAL DETAILS" and you will see some options for what you seek. However it may be that you will need to have your operating system (in your EXAMPLE Spanish) as your computers language before it can provide the service. As is the case in Microsoft SAM--if you want to use the Chinese SAM you MUST be using Windows O/S in Chinese.

Solve : Need Laptop Advice-Please help?

Answer»

I recently ordered a Toshiba L755-S5308 with an i5 processor, 320 gb and 4kb of memory from Best Buy.  I was informed last night that they are now out of stock and they would like to replace it for the same price with a Gateway NV57H57u.  It has the same processor, better graphics package and more memory.   Although they are giving me 6 gb of memory when the 4 probably would be sufficient.   My dilemna is that I am not familiar with the Gateway laptop and have been unable to find a review of this particular one.  I really wanted a Toshiba but this is the only option Best Buy would give me for the same price.  Any insight you can give me or knowledge would be greatly appreciate, I am running out of time before Christmas.  Thank you for any help or guidance you can give me.
I will be using this laptop mainly in the HOME for the internet, email and some gaming, mostly games through Facebook. I won't be doing anything real tech savvy. Just looking for a reliable computer that will get me where I need to go in a timely fashion.  Thank you. If you have your heart set on the Toshiba then i would suggest you wait for it.Apparently  Best Buy claims they will be having them available again in 1-2 weeks. Also while they seem to be sold out online have you asked a local Best Buy retail outlet to see if any store in their network has one? Generally speaking Toshiba comes out with better reviews than Gateway. Give yourself or the recipient a card with a promise to fulfill when the product is available. You could also try calling Toshiba and tell them your wishes and problem who knows given the Christmas spirit they may come through for you. I own a Toshiba laptop and my limited involvement with them has been positive. Good luck.truenorth http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+-+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+Processor+/+15.6%26%2334%3B+Display+/+6GB+Memory+-+Blue/3792507.p?id=1218432158809&skuId=3792507

It has exactly the same Intel HD 3000 graphics as does the Toshiba, so I would go with the more reputable manufacturer, in this case Toshiba.

Gateway is a rather obscure computer manuf. where I live, and the few models I have seen in stores are usually budget netbooks/entry level 14'' laptops.
I have not been able to find any reviews on the Gateway-nv57h57u online, just like you...The Gateway is built by ACER as are many others brands. Who makes ACER? Your guess is as good as mine. lol Through my perusing the net, I have learned there are only a handfull of companies who make laptops for all manufacturers. Like you however, I have always had very good luck with Toshiba products in general, but I must say that ASUS is another company you should consider. I build my own home machines, and always buy ASUS boards, but also while perusing the net, I learned that ASUS was one of the top, trusted names in laptops. I don't own one, yet, so can't comment on reliability, customer SERVICE etc. I just bought my HP dv6-6117dx for $429 from Best Buy nov 27th, and was able to get it at the store which was nice, imediate gratification. lol This thing has Beats Audio which is great over headphones, the speakers are so/so, but over full on headphones, it's awsome as Beats puts out 2 clean watts unlike most that only put out 1 watt. Some think Beats Audio to be a gimick, but it is not, and you won't really be able to tell by listening to the laptop speakers, you must use phones. This one has the AMD 3500m CPU w/6620G graphics which is the best you can get graphics-wise from a laptop in this category; The under $700 or so, and unheard of in a $429 laptop, it will play all newer games where some games won't even load with Intel based HD3000 graphics which is Intel's current best. Anyway, I have had some problems with the HP, and am probably going to return it for an ASUS i5 model - U56E-BBL6 - for $549 it looks to be a great deal If I can get my hands on one. (  http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Asus+-+Laptop+/+Intel&%23174%3B+Core&%23153%3B+i5+Processor+/+15.6&%2334%3B+Display+/+6GB+Memory+-+Aluminum+Lake+Blue+Hairline/3411128.p?id=1218399206867&skuId=3411128&slref=10&slloc=01 ) Best Buy site says they still have them. I really hate to give up this HP though, their service is top notch! I couldn't be more pleased, and that is saying something. However, The Hp Laptop, brand new, and out of the box, had some cosmetic flaws I decided I could live with, but it then started having some screen problems, flickering line at the top of screen which a change in power scheme settings proved effective in clearing up, but just a work around, not a solution. HP, while in chat about this last night, had me install new drivers, but havn't had a chance to test them out to see if the settings still cause the lines. It's related to the "never turn monitor off" setting which for some, especially when on battery, is a must have. It will sleep fine, but if set to turn off, the lines appear? lol Who knows, and again, something I was willing to live with, and again, support has been great! However, I noticed yesterday the laptop sags in the middle which disallows the lid/screen from sitting flush against the base. It's only about a 16th of an inch bowed, but the base is warped, and I know this will only get worse, and will require a complete new frame/casing from HP. If Best Buy wants to knock off another $75-$100, I might decide to keep it, and send it in, but that ASUS I refer to above, from what I have read, is an actual Aluminum casing, frame. I read it has the aluminum on the keyboard/pad part of the base, not sure where else it may have the aluminum, but even having it just on the part of the laptop which gets the most use is a real plus. I am into sound, reason for going with HP, and their Beats Audio, it really is excellent, and HP has a real good reputation as well so keep them in mind when looking. Bring some good ear buds, or phones along with a mem card with some music on it, and test it for yourself, if you also care about sound. I am going to do this with the ASUS, but I don't expect the same quality, but one can always hope. lol Anyhoo, at the price, that ASUS looks good if you havn't bought a computer yet, and it's very stylish if your into this aspect, it has that I'm an expensive laptop look! lol But, as we know, it's very reasonable for what you get. Hope this helps, and sorry for being so wordy, I get going, and it's difficult to stop, love to write. Hope you find what you are looking for, and if You already bought, and like any of the above or the HP I list below, Best Buy has returns until mid Jan. Mine is defective so I hope they don't try to hang a restock fee on me as these were sold out long ago, or I would simply exchange for another as I am real happy with it. They do have another model of this, but it's $629, $200 more. ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+/+AMD+A-Series+Processor+/+15.6&%2334%3B+Display+/+8GB+Memory+-+Dark+Umber/4038134.p?id=1218450209175&skuId=4038134&IcsCsid=2-39-2064-25-5-122287-169037-25-2064-20-25-2064-3497-0-1 ) I have  $485 on my return, and am willing to go another $100, but that's it. I simply can't afford to go higher, the reason for buying the HP dv6-6117dx in the first place was it's value at $429, one of those buys you rarely come across. LOL, ok, I'm done, hope this helps, hope you got, or get, what you want. Take care all.
P.S. I can't leave without stating another aspect. Customer service is unbelievable at HP, meaning extremely good. Had trouble building recover discs with top of the line media from Verbatim which has always worked fine for me, very few coasters, and HP sent me backup/recovery discs without charging me. Have had 3 chats with them online for various problems, and all went well, and fast. Hp has great support. So, that is another aspect to look into when buying your laptop, look for the reviews of what kind of service to expect from any given company. or instance, My experiences with Samsung have been nothing short of horrendous, and it was a simple MATTER, but they held firm until I spent hours writing, and on the phone. I love Samsung products, but am now very hesitant to buy that name again. I also had trouble with another S.Korea company so wonder if it's just the nature of South Korean companies to hold out to the end because I was at the point of suing before they gave me what I had deserved all along, a simple key to unlock software that came with my Samsung SSD DRIVE, which is a great drive by the way, but customer service? Non existant in Samsung's case. I am going to look around after this for reviews regarding ASUS, and will most likely call them, try to get them in a chat, etc. This is a good way to test service before buying from anyone! Take care. Also, if you want to investigate the AMD Offering, as I did, there is a very good review of the Llano based AMD 3500m CPU & included Radeon graphics here. http://hothardware.com/Reviews/AMD-Fusion-A83500M-ASeries-Llano-APU-Review/?page=1

Solve : Copy multiple files?

Answer»

Hi

I have a list of many filenames , I need the code in DOS to COPY them all to another FOLDER

Any help will be greatly appreciated !

HowardChange to the directory FIRST where the files are that you want to copy.

Then:

copy *.* X:\destination directory

Replace X with whatever drive the destination directory is on.

If you only want to copy files with certain file extensions then use: *.doc
for example.

There are different ways of doing it depending on your needs.

I'd recommend googling how to use the copy command to suit your needs. Quote from: Amram Chayim Eirinberg on December 26, 2011, 07:29:04 PM

I have a list of many filenames , I need the code in DOS to copy them all to another folder

I am assuming the list of filenames contains the complete drive letter and path of each file like this example:

Code: [Select]S:\App-install\wizapp15\license.txt
S:\App-install\wizapp15\versions.txt
S:\App-install\wselect\out$$.txt
S:\App-install\wselect\screen.txt
S:\App-install\wselect\test$$.txt
S:\App-install\wselect\Wselect.txt
S:\App-install\X-Setup-9.2.100\readme-EN.txt
S:\App-install\X-Setup-9.2.100\ReadMe.txt
S:\Backup\basic\FreeBASIC\changelog.txt
S:\Backup\basic\FreeBASIC\docs\GoRC.txt
S:\Backup\basic\FreeBASIC\docs\gpl.txt
D:\eula.1028.txt
D:\eula.1031.txt
D:\eula.1033.txt
D:\eula.1036.txt
D:\eula.1040.txt
D:\eula.1041.txt
D:\eula.1042.txt
D:\eula.2052.txt
D:\eula.3082.txt
D:\fraglist.txt
D:\Alacarta\TVE-Alacarta-Hoy\Bin\Progtitle.txt
D:\Alacarta\TVE-Alacarta-Hoy\Bin\thisfilename.txt
D:\Alacarta\TVE-Alacarta-Hoy\Bin\Ngrep-byline-dump\dump1.txt
D:\Alacarta\TVE-Alacarta-Hoy\Bin\Ngrep-byline-dump\dump2.txt
D:\OS-Install\cd110511\README.TXT
D:\Virtual Machines\Suse114-1\Readme.txt

You can use a batch script to read the file line-by-line and copy each file to the chosen destination directory.

Assumptions:

The file CONTAINING the list is C:\test\File List.txt
The files are copied to D:\Destination\Folder

Try this

Code: [Select]echo off
set listfile=C:\test\File List.txt
set CopyToFolder=D:\Destination\Folder
for /f "delims=" %%A in ( ' type "%listfile%" ' ) do copy "%%A" "%CopyToFolder%"

Solve : Posting a problem in Caps.... My 2cents worth?

Answer»

I don't get what the big deal is with people putting some or part of their posts in all caps. So what if the posts show they are frustrated and seem to be yelling.  Why do certain people take it so personally.  At times I have put things in caps to get a point across.  Guess I don't see what the big deal is. I do get tired of reading posts wasting time and space that says "don't yell or "why are you posting things in all caps".  It is better than the person's post expressing it in  bad language all over the place. Wouldn't it be better GETTING  down to the business of trying to help solve the problem  and not always bring attention to what has been posted in caps. It is harmless in my book. I am a moderator on another computer forum.  I came here in the hopes of learning more about what I don't know which I openly admit could fill volumes. I agree some people go over the top a little with it. If it's a first time poster I simply assume they don't know better and somewhere in my response I mention it's the online equivalent of shouting. What bothers me a bit is people who "correct" the poster but don't try to help.
It's all down to etiquette and social protocols. For those of us who spend a lot of time hanging out in cyberspace, messages written in all capital letters are reminiscent of trying to hold a conversation in which one person is shouting every word while others are speaking at a normal volume.
Also, a message written in all capitals is harder to read. In blocks of text rendered in all capitals, words lose their "shape" because they are all the same height. Each word becomes a uniform rectangle. Most people read and quickly recognize words by looking at their overall shape. We do not read by visualizing words one letter at a time. Capital letters are best left for their intended usage and, sparingly, to emphasize a particular word or phrase.
If you are new to the ways of the Internet, this restriction on the use of capital letters might seem silly and you might dismiss it as unimportant. However, using all capitals in your messages will adversely affect how people perceive you online.
Some good points here... I hope I am not one of the people ALLAN refers to that correct but do not help... Many people, particularly older ones, still read books, and it is a typographical convention that (for example) dialogue ("dialog") written ALL IN CAPITALS represents words spoken in a raised voice or shouted. Also in written material such as notes, instructions, etc, material that is meant to be particularly noticed and attended to is written in all caps. Make sure the switch is in the OFF position before opening the cover. In SHORT, we are talking about emphasis. Grabbing attention. It isn't just the shapes the words make, although reddevilggg makes a good point, it is also the perceived attitude and intention of the writer which influences peoples reactions. In forums, attempts to jump the queue and grab attention often get a negative reaction. It's human nature. Answers in forums such as this one are written by unpaid volunteers who answer the questions that they feel like answering. People who choose to make subject lines like URGENT NEED HELP ASAP!!!!!!!!! can torpedo their chances before they have even started. Many people won't even read such threads. I might as well add a personal pet hate of mine: multiple QUESTION and exclamation marks. Is my motherboard broken?? OMG my computer crashed!!!!! They just add an overheated, hysterical air that can be very offputting, but I am grimly resigned to the fact that the text message generation is set to inherit the world.

One thought that has crossed my mind is that some posters don't live in a country where the Western (Roman) alphabet is the standard one, and it is possible that some are not completely aware of the difference between upper and lower case. I remember a poster on here who Insisted On Capitalising The First Letter Of Each Word. Like This. I could never tell (I tried asking!) whether he was being annoying on purpose or whether he thought that it was obligatory. Personally, I am happy with complete sentences and words spelled correctly( or at least close to their spelling) not text shortcuts that I have to wade through or  whole words completely missing.  I am guilty of whole words missing sometimes so I know how it can happen.  If it is peeves that we are addressing here (certainly NOT earth shaking) but what annoys me are the posters that subject their posts with something the equivalent of  i am freaking out--or i desperately need help and that's it. Those of us that try to help others should be governed by our knowledge of the issue and limit our comments to those subjects we feel we have something of value to contribute. When i see a subject that often determines whether i read it or not (just as there are parts of the CH forums i rarely if ever go to because i feel i lack the knowledge to be of any help). If you have a specific problem state it specifically in the subject. This is not addressed at anyone in particular it is only given as an example of how postings can be improved.truenorthI don't respond to Posts in caps...

But that's just me.If I had the benefit of the computer knowledge of what most of you have,  I would attempt to answer as many as I could. Right now I look at them all and answer as best I can.  Even at the risk of looking and sounding stupid.  Posts with misspellings and incomplete answers make it harder for me to understand. Which is  why they are not my preference. But I would make the effort. Some posts I just have to decline because I don't have the experience as yet.  I was an IT beginner starting in a forum once. I guess I empathize with those who don't get it most of the time and feel overwhelmed and frazzled.  Most days I still feel like a beginner.  My first intro to a computer forum I had never even looked inside a computer now I take them apart, put them back together and have built my own. For me, if a post, or even any significant portion of the post (or the title) is in all caps, I will simply not open the thread, or promptly click the back button. If the entire post is in caps I will make a post suggesting they NOT use caps, though. As if they don't know it's a problem they can't rightly CURE it. On to why I skip such posts. Several reasons. The main one being that the posts are a pain to read. words formed with only CAPITAL LETTERS quite literally take more effort to read. Thing is, it takes more effort to produce them, so the way I see it the person posting in all-caps is purposely making the task of understanding them difficult. I personally see no reason to help such people as there are plenty of others who are willing to write using proper punctuation and lettering. Another point to be made is punctuation. Posts often lack it. I skip those, always.

A lot of posts lack a lot of technical information and instead opt to tell us their life story. I tend to skip posts like "Oh no my computer crashed, I got it 2 years ago from my cousin Bob, he traded it for a six-pack LOL but now when it starts it says like ANLR is missing press a key to restart! I need this computer for my work OMG HELP!" Because in my experience it often takes more time to just get the proper information about the question than it does to help a half dozen other people who could be bothered to provide relevant information.

Wouldn't it be better getting  down to the business of trying to help solve the problem  and not always bring attention to what has been posted in caps.
Yes, let's let them continue to post in capital letters and attempt to jump the thread queue because they used the magic term "ASAP" and put their thread title in capitals. OR, optionally, half the people who might be able to help them will simply skip their topic altogether. OR- somebody can post to tell them that it was probably a bad idea to post in all caps because a large number of helpers will simply skip their post. I figure the last one is probably the most helpful.

I don't get what the big deal is with people putting some or part of their posts in all caps. So what if the posts show they are frustrated and seem to be yelling.  Why do certain people take it so personally.
I believe posts with all caps typically come from persons unfamiliar with "netiquette".  Still, I don't ignore it because, as others have said, it's harder to read.

Obviously, new members are easily recognized by a low post count. So, I'd rather not see more experienced forum members make remarks such as "Stop shotting" because the person probably does not know this rule of netiquette.  And therefore, I normally just make an explanatory statement regarding using all caps.  The fact that this almost always results in the person refraining from using all caps in subsequent posts seems to confirm that they simply were not aware of the rule of netiquette.  So, other members should refrain from comments that imply personal offense when, most likely, no offense was intended.

I think that's OK as long as it's done sparingly.  Of course, emphasis can also be expressed with techniques such as bold font or highlighting by using the Glow feature in the forum.

Solve : Skype for Acer Iconia A500.?

Answer»

I would like to purchase one but the make it or break it for me is how well Skype works for Video calls on it with the Webcam.

I use a low end Acer and Skype Daily and I'd MUCH rather have a Tablet to use for eBooks, web browsing and portability but it all depends if the Skype holds up, at least as good as the Acer. Could anyone PLEASE give me a personal review on it if they have used this model Acer? Thank you anyone. Or even if u would like to trade Skype Screen names and show me how it works live. That would be so wonderful!  I do not have that tablet, but ACCORDING to this thread:
http://community.skype.com/t5/Android/Skype-Video-for-Acer-Iconia-Tab-A500/td-p/62444/page/5
There are mixed RESULTS with Skype on that tablet, especially with video calling-some users only see a solid green where the video call is supposed to be. HOWEVER, one user at the end managed to fix all his/her problems by installing a newer version of Skype not on the Android Marketplace.
There are various reviews of the tablet you may want to check out here:

For the first TIME today, I visited a website that uses COMODO's Corner of TRUST.  The website was http://www.lcounty.com/auditor/.   In the lower right corner of the page, I noticed the COMODO "Trustmark".  By hovering the mouse over it, a small box is displayed with some additional security-related information about the company behind the website.   More INFO at Comodo's Corner of Trust

Just THOUGHT you might like to know.http://www.truste.com/
Provides a similar service.
I noticed that Comodo's Corner of Trust is free to set up, though. Great for people just starting to set up a small online store.

1. How will they keep improving hardware when die shrinks approach 10nm? Quantum tunneling starts becoming an issue, and the reductions get smaller too, compared to the days when it went from 65nm to 45nm.

2. For how long do shopping sites eBay keep logs of user activities?

3. DDR3 1333 with 9 CAS latency vs DDR3 1066 with 7 CAS. Pretty much CAS vs ram speeds.

4. What's the limit to amount and oldness of stuff from one Ip-adress one can track down?

5. Is Windows 8 likely to be released by the end of the first half of 2012? If it is not so, then when?

6. Is 50W TDP much for a mobile GPU? What about 35W?

7. Will W9 likely be released around 2015?

8. Is a simple anti-virus scan enough to remove doubts about emails, USBs, HDDs etc having malware?

9. Are 1680x1050 res and up a must for graphic design and other graphics intesive activities?

10. What exactly are jobs and activites which may make use of such reses? e.g. would making a game (indie, not pro level) be such an activity? What about digitally made pictures such as those seen on deviantart?

11. Is 4 GBs of ram enough for activities as those mentioned above?

12. Is 6 GBs worth it for gaming?

13. By 2015 will 8, or at least 6 GB be recommended for gamers? Mainstreamers?

14. If I understand dual/tripple/quad channel correctly then it needs ram sticks in pair of 2/3/4 to work.

15. For if those aren't examples of such activites, then I'll rather focus on two what monitor size with what res is good for the eyes health-wise, especially for those with myopia. I've heard large monitor and low res are best.

16. Is at least 15.6 inch monitor size recommended for 3-D animation?

17. How long do NA email providers keep logs of deleted accounts' emails?

18. Will HDDs be pawned out of the market by SSDs in the next 3 years? Any other competing techs to watch out for?

19. Will LCDs be replaced by OLED or similar in the next 3 years?

20. Are portable routers gimped security-wise compared to stationaries?

21. LCD screensavers are pointless as black TAKES more energy if anything and blocks sleep mode? I use the completely empty, black screen saver myself but will ditch if it improves things.

22. Should also completely black wallpaper be avoided due to the increased power consumption? Likewise, would white actually be the best color to use?

23. The same questions only regarding OLEDs.

24. For how long can Canadian, US, UK websites store Ip-adress of visitors GOING by the law in those countries?

25. For making indie games and 3-D animation, is OSX by far the better than W and Linux?

26. Does Linux and OSX have poor workability when it comes to gaming in general? Will it remain the same for the next 3 years or so? Reason I ask it seems W is quite the resource hog, especially compared to Linux.

27. Trustable web proxies? Can they be used for anything, including logging onto forum, email, etc accounts?

28. Is email service client just like having a server which receives and stores mail on your computer?

29. Looking at %age of Steam users, should I avoid certain res based on that due to lesser support for those res, e.g. 0.94% UXGA?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_resolution

30. Is email client better than service provider for security? I read how POP3 is not secure and used on providers so password can be intercepted...

31. During Intel Core 2 era, AMD considered themselves to have the first quad core due to monolithic multi-core design. Are now every last Bulldozer, Nehalem, Sandy Bridge future architectures (from both companies) monolithic so AMD has lost this advantage?

32. Does AMD GPUs historically have some kinda advantage over Nvidia? I remember reading such a thing a few years bacK; believe it was about AMD being less RECKLESS with noise and power issues.

33. By 2015/16, will quad core be required for new games?

34. Will a slow (compared to quads) like the upcoming 3667U not be able to take full advantage of 4 GBs of ram or more?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ivy_Bridge_(computer_processor)

35. Can authorities and other more easily track online gamers?

36. EMF strength and frequency are measured in units of Gauss. By picking a ULV CPU, mid-range GPU, SSD > HDD, a relatively dim screen and as much sufficient passive cooling as possible, will the Gauss number lowered?

37. Can a laptop be covered in EMF-blocking casing/coating/film or possibly have some solid material fastened to it? (laptop shield) Should this be done to one's cellphone to?

38. Do cell and smartphones, computers and other tech emit less EMFs as technology advances?

39. Another solution is to have the box containg the laptop's workings (CPU, GPU, etc) be connected to the monitor and keyboard (probably one of the flexible roll ones) by wire and place the box quite a distance away. Good, workable idea?

40. Are there clothes (for humans) and accessories (like special glasses, lenses) which blocks EMFs?

41. I've read theres certain types of food which leads to better bodily EMF resistance.

42. And that rolling around in grass and holding one's hand under water reduces EMFs or something.

43. I've also read electronics shouldn't not just be turned off but also unplugged when one isn't going to be using them for a while yet be around them. True?

44. Also that the bed should be positioned at least 6 inches or more away from the wall as it contains electrical wirings. True?

45. avast! has blocked 3 network connections total, the last was roughly a mounth ago. I'm worried that someone has successfully hacked it at this point and made avast inefficient. This is more tangential, but no other shield has had to block anything. There are more PCs on the network, so the hacker may have gotten to them as well. I don't know where to begin to find out if there even is a mess to clean up here.
I think putting all those questions in one post is absurd.  Anyway, I'll answer one.

I just watched presentation on Windows 8 on Dec. 9.   My understanding is no date has been announced yet but it's not likely to be until the second half of 2012, perhaps in the fall.  The public beta version is projected to be available in Feb. 2012.

No. There is no 1 product that can do it all.

24) Don't know...look it up.
25) Again it would be the Authors preference.
26) Gaming will go where it's authors lead it...market share more than platforms decide this more than anything.
27) Yes.
28) It's stored on your PC...that doesn't make it a server though.
29) Not qualified to reply to this one at all.
30) Anything can be hacked...taking proper security measures obviously make this more difficult.
31) AMD and iNtel switch lead places every 18 months or so...check history...
32) Never heard that...no comment.
33) Probably.
34) That is usually determined by the OS itself.
35) Sure.
36) Don't know...but i would venture to say that is all dependent on the monitor itself...and how resistant it is to EMF.
37) See above.
38) Yes.
39) Unpractical...i'd say no. OTHERS may have a differing opinion.
40) Probably...are you concerned about it ?
41) BullCarp.
42) See Reply 41.

In other ways. The current technology isn't the only one; Von nuemann is only one possible "type" of computer, and surely the various strengths of other computer types can be leverages in a frankesteined type of machine.

oldness of stuff? It depends on the activity of that IP address. Surely any non-trivial amount of web browsing will leave data on any number of web servers. It is however impossible to really know how long those types of logs will be around. Some companies archive them for who knows why.

9. Are 1680x1050 res and up a must for graphic design and other graphics intesive activities?
Since my monitor is 1440x900 and I've done quite a bit of work in Photoshop, 3ds max, and similar applications I think it's safe to say no. I would say having multiple monitors is loads better than having a larger one, though.
Quote
10. What exactly are jobs and activites which may make use of such reses? e.g. would making a game (indie, not pro level) be such an activity?
those you described. Photoshop, 3ds max, illustrator, flash, etc. pretty much any application can benefit from higher resolutions since it either translates into more screen real-estate or it means that everything is at a higher DPI. making a game would not really count. Typically, a full screen game that utilizes OpenGL or Direct3d would not be debugged on the same machine it is being run on, but would generally be done using remote debugging. of course higher resolutions are a huge benefit for programming since you can have more code on screen or more tool windows open and the like.

Quote
What about digitally made pictures such as those seen on deviantart?
Same as above. as for my dA wallpapers, they are exactly double my own screen resolution  (2880x1800 being their size). Zoom in and Zoom out typically make what resolution you are using yourself more an issue of screen real-estate.

No. SSD's will be more expensive than Magnetic drives for the foreseeable future.
Quote
19. Will LCDs be replaced by OLED or similar in the next 3 years?
No. I don't think so. It's a different technology and it has some limitations and kinks that need to be worked out before it is price-comparable to LCD technology on a level that will promote widespread acceptance.

Quote
Are portable routers gimped security-wise compared to stationaries?
Probably not. I can't think of a reason why they would be. Most of the security type stuff is handled in their software and software doesn't take up physical space.

Quote
21. LCD screensavers are pointless as black takes more energy if anything and blocks sleep mode? I use the completely empty, black screen saver myself but will ditch if it improves things.
the LCD itself takes so little power that wether all the cells are on or off, the fact is the inverter is going to be using about 90% of the power. And even that uses less that a CRT would in "sleep" mode, so basically with a LCD you are using less power when it's on than you would use with a CRT that is displaying nothing. If you want to save power, you should be shutting the screen off entirely, or putting it into sleep mode (many LCD screens will dim or shut off the screen inverter in sleep mode).

Also, Screensavers have been "pointless" for their original purpose for years. They were original basically designed to keep your monitor from burning in because of repeated stationary images. This was particularly bad with older MDA monitors. I've seen a few examples of monitors where you could tell they had been used with Lotus 1-2-3 quite a lot, since the Lotus 1-2-3 menus were permanently emblazoned in their location at the top of the screen. Colour CRTs supposedly "fixed" this problem, but that hasn't stopped me personally from seeing screens that clearly state "it is now safe to turn off your computer" on their screens as a result of burn-in.

LCDs don't burn in at all, since they use a completely different technology. over and under-utilization of the various cells can cause them to go dead or encounter aberrant behaviour, but showing the same image won't burn into the screen. Screensavers however quickly went from somewhat necessary equipment preserving software to fun novelty. It hasn't been about power saving for years, it's been about protecting your information from prying co-worker eyes and being entertained by flying toasters.

Quote
22. Should also completely black wallpaper be avoided due to the increased power consumption? Likewise, would white actually be the best color to use?
The difference in power consumption is so small that if it mattered you would be typing in the dark.

Quote
24. For how long can Canadian, US, UK websites store Ip-adress of visitors going by the law in those countries?

indefinitely. Your machine is offering up the information, no strings attached. There is no legal statute, as far as I'm aware, that says what you can and cannot do with such freely given information. That is why more important information (that actually matters) such as SIN numbers and the like are generally covered by a Site Privacy Policy. Without a privacy policy, the default is basically that the site can do whatever they please with whatever you provide to them, regardless of what you think they can do with it. The Privacy Policy is a good thing because it says what they will and will not do in a legally binding document.

No. Over all Linux comes out below the other two simply by virtue of development being a gigantic pain in the *censored*.

Actually, No, come to think of it, it's actually a lot more annoying with OSX, since you're basically forced to use that abortion of a Programming environment known as XCode.

Quote
26. Does Linux and OSX have poor workability when it comes to gaming in general?

Yes. Linux isn't designed for games. Plain and simple, and, perhaps equally relevant, games aren't designed for Linux. You've got to worry about libraries, lib files, do you have the right version of that png library it uses. And the problem that nobody inside the community can really decide what particular product to use for a given feature; should a distro use OSS or ALSA? should it include PulseAudio? what desktop environment will it use? etc. All of these have considerations and nuances that need to be taken into account.

I hear this a lot, particularly the "especially compared to linux" but I've yet to see anything to back up such claims. "resource hog" is a bit of a vague statement, since it's usually crappy programs that people are running that take up resources.

Perhaps someone here can tell Kaspersky (like they've told me) that it isn't "Free anti-virus software" ...?

Interesting. Quote from: computercorner on December 20, 2011, 01:54:10 PM

It's Anti-Virus software, but only in the same capacity as Malware Bytes or ClamAV. People's point is that it's not a Anti-virus solution because it doesn't have on-demand scanning which important for some reason, and most importantly. it's not nearly as effective at what it is designed to do as their paid product (no surprise there, really).

I was just reading over the following title on the Kaspersky Lab Technical Support page:

Interesting.

Now you're just beating a dead horse.

You can't take one line from a page and expect to win an argument with it. You have to look at all the facts, which have been shown to you here yet you refuse to listen.

Perhaps you should read this page again:
http://support.kaspersky.com/avptool2010/main?qid=208281975

Then take the time to learn what you're talking about. Its funny how quickly you assume that I am trying to win an argument or
don't know what I am talking about after I merely quote the words of Kaspersky
and call it interesting.

I marked this solved and gave proper thanks to everyone including you regardless
of your openly unpleasant tone towards my posts.

Nothing to beat, just thought it was interesting in a funny way. Next time I'll put a
smily face or something.

Solve : IP address question??

Answer»

Hi,

When I log in to sites where I have an account, it is usually not necessary for me to log in, they already know it is me. At first I thought that they are reading my IP address, but I use Verizon wireless for my Internet connection, and my IP address changes each time that I turn my computer off. Then I thought maybe they are reading my cookies, so I started using a cookie cleaner before I logged in and same results. I don't have any reason to hide, but am CURIOUS how they are able to do that. Does anyone know the answer?

Thanks!

That is the way it works. The browser does the log in for you. The browser has your user name and PASSWORD stored in a special place. If you do not like that feature, turn it off.i have a ip question ,i presume i have a ip address.but idont know it how do i find it. Quote from: ivanoe on December 18, 2011, 04:41:19 AM

Hi ivanoe,
Go to command prompt>>Click start button>>Go to run and type CMD>> When that opens type IPconfig>>Look for IPv4>>There will be a SET of four numbers it may look like: 192.168.x.x(the X's are the last two numbers, they are different for every computer.)
Hope this helps,
Spock96

PS: I'm not sure how it works on this forum but, if you are going to ask a question please start a new thread. Don't "hijack" someone ELSE's. thanks for replying spocks96.i tried your sugestion but nothing happens.typed in cmd. next page top of page cmd.exe, clicked that got black screen with white writing.
typed in Ipconfig, then thats it it just sits there i cant'do anything else.no matter what i click or press nothing happens.and nothing changes on the screen.Ivanoe, it is rude to hijack a thread.  Start your own thread and provide as much information as possible.thanks for pointing that out i didn;t realise i had hijacked  one.Sorry.
