Solve : making threads with wide images fit to screen? |
|
Answer» Once this thread got to the 4TH post with the code image, it made it so that I have to horizontally shift my screen over in order to veiw the end of each line. How can I narrow the thread VIEW to make it fit my screen. I'm RUNNING XP SP2 and Firefox if that matters.only way is for manadude to edit his code tag contents. When i hit Topics that wide i just skip over them...I tend to skip over them also. It doesn't apply in case of the thread I linked since the OP is who posted the wide image, but If I'm the OP and someone else post a wide image in my thread I may tend to GET a tad ill. That only happens when the Code tags are USED. Images are automatically reduced to fit the forum. |

Solve : Does Everyone Get Mad At This Website?? |
|
Answer» When doing a web SEARCH attempting to help a person Let me rephrase: I am being asked for a credit card. The "I'm being asked for my credit card" is an idiosyncrasy of English; "I'm being asked to show my credit card. Too bad I don't have it." is an example.Ah But now we are entering into the world of English LANGUAGE, word psychology, and grammer, which is completely and uterly pointless in a computer forum. Solve : Locked thread test? |

Answer» Testing.Hey, Admin, I can't edit my POSTS. I thought you made that possible in a locked thread... ?TestHuh. Strange you should be able to, just tested with Techno, an alt account and had no issues posting in a locked thread with that account being a Forum mod.Ohh. After attempting to edit the above post I think I realize what your issue is.. you can't edit, you can reply.. though.. I'll see if it's possible to edit too.Hmm unfortunately after some searching and experimenting I have not come up with a method of modifying a locked post, I think it would be a great feature to have too, ESPECIALLY for the FAQ's. I'll attempt to create a post on YaBB's forum for any suggestions. But maybe it's time that we take the FAQ section to the next step and make it into a Wiki. I'll unlock this post so EVERYONE can PUT their own input into this idea.I think that's a great idea!so in order to modify a post, a moderator must unlock the thread, modify, then re-lock it? Quote so in order to modify a post, a moderator must unlock the thread, modify, then re-lock it?I'm afraid so, even full admin has to unlock and relock. |

Solve : GC Warning? |
|
Answer» I recently received a warning on my PC that read "GC Warning: Removing nonexistent thread 25272". The warning just appeared in notepad. Does anyone know what this is? Should I be concerned?I think this is an error being PRODUCED by a garbage collector (memory management system). Are you doing any programming? What were you doing just before this happened? My daughter was playing a game online. I just happened to be standing behind her when notepad suddenly opened up.May we ask what site she was visiting, and what game she was playing at the time?it was http://www.gogirlsgames.com (no porn lol) and she was playing some kind of horse game. Goodness this sounds really bad.No, not at all! The Internet is now almost incomprehesively large, and it's only a small PERCENTAGE of the 'net which gets publicity of any kind -- Twitter, Facebook, etc., and p-rn. It could possibly be internet predators or just plain hackers hacking your pc using java apps. So were the games in java? pure CONJECTURE and speculation. "hacking using java apps"... YEAH. they would probably have better luck trying to hack into somebody's machine using a Doom configuration file... Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 29, 2009, 10:30:13 AM I suggest you Google "java vulnerabilities". Back to the topic on hand, it would seem that this was an error generated by a failure of a program, almost certainly related to the game the OP's daughter was playing. Nothing to worry about. Quote Java is essentially a safe language with good security features. A review of the US-CERT vulnerability database found no vulnerabilities that were not the result of implementation bugs [US-CERT 05]. Java and Java Virtual Machine Security [LSOD 02] and Securing Java [McGraw 99] also describe some Java vulnerabilities that have resulted from implementation bugs. However, there are a number of Java features and facilities that an unwary user might not realize could compromise safety. It's basically not a question of wether vulnerabilities exist, but more a question of wether Java is ever the choice of a hacker, with all the sandboxes and tough security that is part of the specification. VB or another less strict language is often employed. Strangely even so it is not CONSIDERED an "exploit" on the Runtime... And, as Rob said this particular case seems more like one where the game was closed and a few threads were still running, and whilel trying to switch to another thread the thread was found to be nonexistent (it exited properly) and was thus deleted. |

Solve : Does Windo0ws XP get more Malware?? |
|
Answer» About a month ago: Malware More Likely To Affect Windows 7 And Vista Than Windows XPSource: http://www.techweekeurope.co.uk/news/windows-xp-malware-7-vista-145313 Author: STEVE McCaskill - On May 12, 2014 And on May 9, 2014 The same things was said by Graham Cluley, who claims t o be an expert on the subject. http://grahamcluley.com/2014/05/windows-7-xp-microsoft/ Quote The newly published Microsoft Security Intelligence Report (SIR) is a hefty 152 page read, which will probably keep many IT sysadmins occupied for a while. And he has a graph: The above is in conflict with a statement from MS a few months ago, saying XP was a grater risk. But look at the graph closely. It is clear that the last part of 2013 was very bad for all versions of Windows in the chart. It would seem that the new threats were not worse for XP. Of course, there are are so many variables that is is hard to be absolutely sure. Still, the graph is a surprise. sighIts probably just a turn in the evolution of malwares relation to OS version, Although XP and 7 are very SIMILAR on the graph and I have seen for years far greater systems with Vista infected than other systems, so Vista may be troubled by design. Might be because it asks are you sure you want to do something so many times that people dont read it anymore and then they allow the system to get infected when its a real threat vs just verification of a COMMON routine because they dont read the message they just click OK I had this same issue with people I tried to help with Spybot and the TeaTimer feature years ago. I gave them the info and tools they needed to stay clean and it got to a point that people told me that they were not reading the messages and just clicking OK and so that dirty website with a nasty script now got around TeaTimer because they didnt read the message and disallowed something that shouldnt run, because after so many OK's, they were stuck in a habit of saying OK ALLOW to everything! Those who are going to make malware are probably more than likely going to target a newer OS. Its like those running Windows 95, 98, or Me are less likely to be targeted by malware because how many people are still running these OS online.... not many, and so its a waste of coding time to target them, so your probably safer than ever before running one of these older OS's behind a hardware firewall since they lack a software firewall. So as time goes on without MS Update Support, there is the likelihood that some new flaw will be found to target for XP, but also that as time goes on more people will be moving on Windows 7 or 8.x, and so Windows XP down the line will eventually possibly have the same immunities by disinterest to be targeted for malware as fewer and fewer people run XP, however so many people are still running XP, including myself on a few systems, so it may be quite a while before XP gets the same level of disinterest by malware creators as 95,98, and Me. All the hulabaloo about XP becoming a huge security risk is just a bunch of nonsense... I'm tired of hearing about it myself...The statistics used here for the chart are used in a purposely biased manner. For one: the VERTICAL axis is "Computers cleaned per 1000 scanned" This raises questions: Scanned by what? What does it mean to "clean" the system? what was found? Does it include silly items like "tracking cookies"? Additionally, are the bars also indicative of the number of systems actually using an OS? For example in this chart do we see that Windows XP's 24 represents a case where of every 1000 systems, 24 had Windows XP And had malware? Because if so the data would be biased to show a higher count for more popular Operating Systems as well. This is nothing more than a case of statistics munging to make the data appear to support a hypothesis, IMO.I have to agree. I'm seeing less and less infections and XP seems to be experiencing less than the other OS's.I think its not with the OS but with the user. Careful using of our computers will lessen and prevent malware. Quote from: leolako21 on AUGUST 23, 2014, 08:46:15 AM I think its not with the OS but with the user. Careful using of our computers will lessen and prevent malware. Stop necromancing old Posts please... |

Solve : OP Symbol? |
|
Answer» I like that idea. Couldn't see Saviour's image, but, in keeping with the "keep it simple" theme - why not leave it the way it is. It's self-explanatory and doesn't raise the question of, "Why is XYZ after my name?"Anyone else having a problem seeing the image? Anyone else having a problem seeing the image? I can see it fine.I can see it just fine as well. And I understand where you're coming from, Steve, but like has been brought up, I think we'd end up GETTING a lot of users asking why there's a little icon next to their name. Even if it didn't happen a lot, it would probably still be annoying. Heh. Personally, I like the first image in evilfantasy's post (the blue fits in a lot better), but I think the text might look better white. Of course, I guess there isn't actually too much reason to use an image instead of text. But if we did use an image, that one would have my vote.for what my two penneth is worth i like it as text, KISS indeed. FB Quote from: CBMatt on August 25, 2008, 03:30:16 AM but I think the text might look better white. The text couldn't be white.... Every second post's background colour is white! Quote from: KPAC on August 25, 2008, 03:34:45 AM Quote from: CBMatt on August 25, 2008, 03:30:16 AMBut it's an image, so it would look the same for every post (white writing on dark blue). Quote from: evilfantasy on August 24, 2008, 11:27:57 AMbut I think the text might look better white. Thoughts? I like them, although I'd like to keep text if possible. I can modify the CSS to look similiar to the icons you used here and can adjust them on the fly to meet almost any need. What about this change everyone? Quote from: Saviour on August 24, 2008, 11:38:26 AM Why not keep it simple...and use the following image with an "alt" tag that reads "Topic STARTER". I believe just adding an image with an alt tag wouldn't get noticed that much since many users don't even know they can hover over images to get a description on some images. it looks nice but i prefer just the text. FBText only vote here.i would like to voice my opinion on the new "topic starter" notification, it is *censored* ugly, i liked the last one more. i find it rather bothersome because i find myself focusing on it while i am trying to read peoples posts. keeping it small and unobtrusive would be best in my opinion.I got on here and I was like "Woah, what did they do?" I prefer the other one. Right now, it's too noticeable.I agree with Carbon. I know it's not up to me, but I personally like the SIZE and look of this one (but with white text): |

Solve : 2 computers, different video speed? |
|
Answer» So I edit videos on a daily basis with a desktop I put together awhile back. Its running 3.6g proc,1g ram, and nvid6800. I recently purchased a laptop. its specs are: 4g ram, dual core 2g, and nvid dedicated and its 64bit. The laptop is obviously faster. The problem is I compressed a movie down to about 76megs and on the old computer it runs perfectly, like always. I then transferred, using a FLASH drive, the movie to my laptop. I saved the file to the desktop. When I play the video its pretty jumpy. about every 45 seconds and it jumps, AUDIO and video. Its consistant each time. iv tried deleting the file and putting it back on the laptop. and i have restarted the laptop. I don't understand why. I'm new to the whole 64 bit thing. If i made the movie on 32 bit comp and compressed it with a 32 bit program, would that somehow effect the file playing on a 64bit laptop? i mean i just don't understand what else it could be. both computers are running at peak performance, no background crap. If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it. thank you so much IMO 32 or 64 bit shouldn't matter. But am wondering what format you have used . compression to WMV, MPEG - or whatever? |

Solve : Shopping for a New Laptop? |

Answer» I live in Tokyo. I have a Panasonic Let’s Note CF-W5 laptop that’s about 3.5 years old. I bought it with a Japanese operating system but re-installed it with Windows XP ENGLISH version to change the OS. I also have an older Toshiba Tecra laptop (English OS) that is only used as a desktop because the screen doesn’t work and it has to be hooked up to a monitor. |

Solve : Laptop Recomendation? |
|
Answer» Hello everyone it has been a while. ...For people who just wants the summary:At least you didn't preface with: "Basically..." Any new laptop you choose will meet all the requirements listed. Maybe you should be more concerned with the Operating System compatibility with your current software. Most new laptops will be shipped with some version of Windows 7, although some offer the option of Windows XP.Well, hopefully your experience buying your new computer will be better! The new i3,5,7 are relatively new, so dont worry about another processor to come out and dominate the field. Also, you budget allows for a great computer, especially for college. I understand completely not wanting a Dell, after 5 computers with them, I am tried of their ways. That being said, HP, Lenovo, Sony, Samsung, and Toshiba make decent products. If you are a college student, you can get a MacBook in that price range, however, it seems like you are looking for a PC. Being a studnet, I would not recommend getting a screen any larger than 15''. I have a 17", and it is painful to LUG around campus. A smaller screen is much easier to carry in a backpack, and it tends to be lighter. As for memory, with a 32bit computer, 4GB is the MAX it will recognize (i believe it is more around 3.12GB?). With 64bit, the max is 128MB, however, that is simply unnecessary. 3-4GB of ram should suffice for all of your needs, including the future. Here is a list of some computers to look at. Sony 14", i3 2.13GHz, 6 Cell Battery, 4GB Ram, 500GB HD, nVidia 310M GPU --- 879.99: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Sony+-+VAIO+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174;+Core%26%23153;+i3+Processor+-+Black/9748868.p?id=1218166171641&skuId=9748868 Samsung 15.6", i5 2.26GHZ, 6 Cell Battery, 4GB Ram, 500 HD, nVidia 310M --- 829.99: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174;+Core%26%23153;+i5+Processor+-+Red/Black/9748386.p?id=1218166152252&skuId=9748386 HP 14.1", i3 2.13GHz, 12 Cell Battery, 4GB Ram, 500GB, On-board Video: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174;+Core%26%23153;+i3+Processor+-+Mocha/9705373.p?id=1218154380159&skuId=9705373 If I had to choose between those 3, I would probably by the samsung. The Sony will probably have a better quality screen, but you get a litte more bang for the buck. These are just a few examples. You can go to different site to look for laptops. Most websites will have a feature that will allow you to narrow down the selection by target price, brand, OS, etc... Hope this helps!! |

Solve : world's fastest computer ever is in china? |
|
Answer» World’s fastest supercomputer belongs to China how big is 2.507 petaflops in every day terms that the ordinary person would understand Quote from: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/tag/cpu/ The supercomputer uses 7,168 NVIDIA Tesla M2050 GPUs (graphics processing units) and 14,336 Intel Xeon CPUs and is CAPABLE of clocking 2.507 petaflops or 2,507 trillion floating point calculations per SECOND.Now that's a PC. Takes 12 mW of power to run it. What a waste. Quote how big is 2.507 petaflops in every day terms that the ordinary person would understand"how big" is a big disingenuous. petaflops don't measure a size, it measures a speed. asking how big 2.507 petaflops is is like asking how big 45 km/h is. Doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Ignoring that minor inconsistency, 2.507 petaflops= 2507000000000000 Floating Point Instructions per second (oversimplified: math problems per second) Quote from: harry 48 on November 12, 2010, 07:18:33 AM give the chinese credit for itCredit for what? It's not like they built/engineered it themselves. If anybody should get credit it should be the engineers at Nvidia, Intel, and whatever other technology firms were involved in the hardware; most of which aren't in China. Additionally as kpac touched on lightly there, Distributed Computing has a lot more power available to it; just the x86 clients for F&H amount to about 6.2PetaFLOPs. Solve : Today's word of the day - Graph - Really?? |
|
Answer» I didn't know what a graph was until today. err.... ok... Quote from: Linux711 on November 08, 2010, 12:04:10 PM I didn't know what a graph was until today. Don't they have schools on your planet? What did you call these things? A sudden thought... how old are you? Quote from: Salmon Trout on November 08, 2010, 02:25:05 PM What did you call these things? Charts ?Charts! Here is a Graph: Or did he mean this? Only one other person here appears to know the difference between a graph and a chart. Graph: a graph is an abstract representation of a set of objects where some pairs of the objects are connected by links. There is overlap between some kinds of charts and some kinds of graphs, but only in some domains. Any plotting of a quantity X to a value Y is a graph. This includes charts that depict views of data in a graph format. PROTIP: just because a certain type of graph shows up in Excel's "Chart Wizard" dialog doesn't mean it's a chart. Excel could be used to create a "chart" of X squared, but that would by all definitions be a graph of a dependent variable Y against the dependent variable X. Regardless, what Geek posted as a graph is the Computer Science definition of a graph, which is probably redundant and despite his implication is not the only definition of a graph and thereby it should be us that uses the on him and not the other way around. Quote from: Geek-9pm on November 08, 2010, 05:14:08 PM Or did he mean this? No. The only thing that is always a chart is a "pie chart", it's never referred to as a pie graph, even though it could represent the same data as a graph. Quote from: rthompson80819 on November 08, 2010, 06:09:32 PM The only thing that is always a chart is a "pie chart", it's never referred to as a pie graph, even though it could represent the same data as a graph. really? What about things like Bar Charts? They don't connect data plot points with lines; they essentially serve as a graphical depiction of data in a table. In any case, this "debate" between what is and is not a chart or graph is pretty dumb, and an exercise in pedanticism. It's like arguing about the difference between a cup and a mug.Let me TRY again to grasp the graph gaff grapple. Here is a bubble chart. Is it also a bubble graph? Quote In any case, this "debate" between what is and is not a chart or graph is pretty dumb, and an exercise in pedanticism. It's like arguing about the difference between a cup and a mug. Agreed, but that's not why I posted this. I was implying that the word of the day was pretty pointless because most educated people already understand the concept of a graph/chart (doesn't matter). I thought this word was out of the norm, so I decided to post. But now I realize that all the words of the days are like this. Don't you think that they should be something that people don't understand, so they will learn? Quote from: Linux711 on November 10, 2010, 12:35:47 PM I was implying that the word of the day was pretty pointless because most educated people already understand the concept of a graph/chart (doesn't matter). Maybe you should give your definition of "Educated". My son is 7 and in the first grade so for his age he is "educated" but I doubt he could tell you the difference in a graph or chart. Just because you know what a word means doesn't mean every one else does regardless if they are educated or not. Quote from: Linux711 on November 10, 2010, 12:35:47 PM Agreed, but that's not why I posted this. Several things: I don't recall a PREREQUISITE for visiting CH being that the visitor must be "educated". Additionally, not everybody will be keen on things such as Graphs and charts; Just as I cannot assume that people here Understand Big-O Notation or lambda expressions; anybody who takes a Computer Science course will know that, just as anybody who gets through Grade 10 Math (at least here that's where Polynomials/graphing were introduced) will understand graphs; Being a High school graduate is still "educated" but so is taking a Computer Science course; therefore I could just as easily say that "most educated people already understand the concept of lambda expressions" and I would be correct, but only for specific definitions of "educated". In anycase, my point is that not only is not everybody who visits this site not necessarily "educated" but that they may also not be educated "enough" to have covered such topics. And what about today's "Word" of the day? "Preview Pane" OUTRAGE! that's two words! In summary: you're paying too much attention to trivial "side shows" of the site. Actually I didn't even know CH had a word of the day until you posted this.Appreciate the feedback Linux711 and I agree that many of the Word of the Days I roll my eyes out, since many of them people are already going to know. The word of the day list is currently randomly generated at the beginning of the year and part of WEIGHTING used in the algorithm looks to see if term has a picture. Because graph has a picture in it, it gave it a high score and is a contributing FACTOR to why it was added into the word of the day. I spent this last week and a half updating the home page and making it more dynamic, allowing the page to pull all daily events into the home page so users didn't have to click on the actual word of the day link or today in computer history in order to see that information. This is going to definitely helps the feel of the site, however, as is obviously apparent words like "graph" and today's word "projector" are not going to be that helpful for the majority of users. I hope to go through and create an actual listing of words that have much more useful information that people are not likely going to know. But with my time being limited creating a script that generated the daily results seemed like the fastest solution at the time. Hope that explains everything and appreciate the feedback. I'm just happy to see that people are noticing the new feature, but now that it's functioning I'll have to refine it a lot more. Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 13, 2010, 10:00:38 AM And what about today's "Word" of the day? "Preview Pane" OUTRAGE! that's two words! |

Solve : How to use flashdrive? Sandisk? |
|
Answer» No instructions of course, I plug it in, it lights up, gives me 4 choices under f disk, then what? how do I download a program & transfer it to a laptop?Use the view files/folders option or go into "My Computer" and OPEN the drive if you already haven't. how do I download a program & transfer it to a laptop? Instead of just clicking a downloader you right click it and choose "Save as". Navigate to your flash drive and save it there. Or download it to the desktop and drag/drop it onto the flash drive. It gives me 3 choices: Sandisk SECURE Access Run Club SanDisk exe Bootstop Module Run SanDisk Secure Access Win they all come up blank with no options.Sounds like that flash drive has some Sandisk-specific software or feature on it. You might post in http://forums.sandisk.com/Have you followed evilfantasy's suggestion ?? His instructions are quite CORRECT. Leave the 3 choices alone. Sandisk often includes utilities on the disk - sometimes on a separate partition. The utilities are not needed and you have the CHOICE to use them, ignore them, or even to DELETE the partition on which they exist and / or reformat the drive. I usually take the second choice and ignore them, since they take up very little space and do no harm. One of my first things to do with a flash drive is to format it (just in case). Be sure to use the Fat 32 option. Pre-installed software on flash drives is usually either useless or trialware. Either way it can usually be replaced by something better or free at http://portableapps.com or http://www.pendriveapps.comHe has yet to return...all good solid suggestions though. |

Solve : European connections? |

Answer» I recently moved to Vienna austria. I want to connect my computer here but am concerned. My CPU has a 220 switch which I can DEAL with. However, the periferals don't. I was thinking about RUNNING them through my US power strip through a converter/transformer, but I heard that MIGHT not work due to frequency modulation. Any ideas. I do not want to fry my monitor.I think you you have been misinformed. If your PSU is switchable and accepts the 230V input, it is designed to work also at 50HZ. Incidentally, power does not have frequency modulation, it simply has frequency. US 115V/60hz and European 230V/50hz is pretty MUCH standard for switching PSU. Frequency modulation is radio and is what is used in the FM radio band and the sound portion of most over the air TV broadcasts. The monitor is a different story unless it is designed for the higher voltage. |

Solve : Windows cleanup ain't working? |
|
Answer» So just the cleanup works (altho it removes thumbnails but sometime later adds the same amount back idk what's up with that?) But the clean up of system files isn't working. I try to remove windows updates and it actually added like 500MB onto my C drive INSTEAD of removing like 3gb of updates and some MBs of other stuff. I could REALLY use that extra space I only have 744MB on C 7,28MB on D 1 gb on E. I DISABLED downloading of any further updates btw, What can I do? And an additional question: are there some other ways to cleanup at least a few bit of space without risks? some that aren't that known ofc Apparently you are stingy about having spare hard drives on hand. Here is my honest recommendation. Got get another hard drive. Clone yur old drive to thenew drive. Clone programs can adjust to larger HDD if need be. From CH archives: Clone Hard Drive or Computer Also SEE: Hard Drive Clone search The cost of a new hard drive is a fraction of the cost of fixing after a crash. There are companies that recover your data, put prices start at $100. Bit for $100 you can buy a new 1 TB drive with warranty. Yes, in your case reliability is not the issue. But for a small investment you can have both more space and redundant storage. Hint::...if your C:\ HDD is that low on space cleanup will not run proper... Is this copy of Win legit BTW ? ? Rule of thumb is any Win version likes approx 15% free space overhead to run proper...to do the math multiply your HDD size X .15...that'll tell you what free space you should have. |

Answer» Quote from: lestatar on January 06, 2010, 01:23:13 AM PS: you have any more thoughts/ideas/suggestions on my OP? Like I SAID, I have no actual PRACTICAL experience of this sort of thing, but I can imagine that a 'poor man's NAS' with 1 TB of storage attached, even if it is a little slow, would certainly be useful in some ways. There are plenty of uses, e.g. backups, longer term storage, where the speed doesn't really matter (and of course if you wanted speed, USB isn't the way to go, whether attached directly to a PC or not). I would be inclined to give it a try. You sound like the kind of person who likes to get their sleeves rolled up and have a tinker with things, so it'll be a bit of fun at the very least, and not a heavy expenditure. Or you could think of alternative uses for the USB drives, e.g. get a multimedia streamer, that is, a device with a USB socket and video and audio outputs that you plug into a TV and hi-fi, and PUT dozens and dozens of movies on the USB drive... How bout an E-SATA PCI card ? ? Quote from: patio on January 06, 2010, 08:54:17 AM How bout an E-SATA PCI card ? ? The OP wants to know how to share 2 x USB hard drives that he already owns, over a home network, without leaving a PC switched on all the time. Quote from: Salmon Trout on January 06, 2010, 01:42:47 AM Like I said, I have no actual practical experience of this sort of thing, but I can imagine that a 'poor man's NAS' with 1 TB of storage attached, even if it is a little slow, would certainly be useful in some ways. SalmonTrout: You hit the nail on the head. This is exactly my line of thinking. I am looking to extend the usability of my 2 very fine Seagates and not be forced to share them fully via a single PC. This is OK, but I'd like to take the next step. I think you [and the other nice folks here] have convinced me to give it a shot. Will broaden my investigation, but may pull the trigger on either your Newlink suggestion or the Hitachi SimpleNet[after I try and grab hold of their tech support]. For sure the drives will retain their usefulness in many ways as you mention. Perhaps what I am really after is a hybrid setup - repurpose 1 of the USB drives for streaming media to hifi and the other as part of my poor man's NAS. Too many choices in this respect I guess...Gotta make up my mind on what exactly I want the end result to be. And yes, you are indeed right - I do indeed enjoy ROLLING my sleeves up and giving STUFF a try. Everything I know about PCs and tech from almost 20 years have come from simply trying things out. I can't think of a better way to learn. Can't tell you how many times I botched things up by playing around too much with DoubleSpace though... ;-) cheers and thanks much again for your input. -lestatar Been a while - hope all are well here at CH Apologies for digging up one of my old threads, but a friend recently linked me to a Woot deal that seemed relevant to my OP. I missed out on the deal and have decided to wait and go with a full NAS solution at some point in the future anyway, but still was wondering if anyone had any experience with this particular device and/or to get people's thoughts on its efficacy as a possible interim solution for what I am trying to achieve, from a HW and included SW perspective. http://www.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=13237 Look forward to hearing some thoughts on this. cheers, -lestatar |

Solve : Registering on Instagram from PC? |
|
Answer» Hi guys! I am an computer noob and know very little about computers so your help would mean a lot to me. DescriptionThe above is for the App called 'MySMS' which is arguably the most popular of its kind. Looks impressive, but you decide if it is for you. SORRY, I can not help you with Instagram . Instagram sucks | Facebook I don't think you understood me Geek. (Or I don't understand what are you trying to say) I need to make Instagram account, but i have no Android phone. I want to make it using PC only. I don't want to "text between PC and android", just this. Is there a way or not?Yes, first let's agree on something. The editing features of Instagram are very poor. So, you have some nice photos on nave prepared and you want to distrubure them with Instagram. Right? OK, here is the problem. Instagram is a thing made for Androids. Do you have any Android? If so, you have no issue getting the app. Well, here is the short story. Use Dropbox. With Dropbox one can get a lot of pictures from any PC into Dropbox, a kind of cloud server. Next fire up the Android, move photos from Dropbox That is the short version. Do you want the long version? Their is a painful video on You Tube. How to Upload Photos on your PC to Instagram You can find it and see why I said what I said. (You will either find the video or something like it.) I'm guessing the above post doesn't help you at all. Try some of the things this Google search revealed and see if anything works: https://www.google.com/search?q=create+instagram+account+on+pc&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&channel=sb If, as you say, it requires a system with 2Gb ram, you can try it with your system anyway. Worst case, it won't run. And if it truly does not run, you'll have your answer - you need another gig of ram.Geek Thank you for your tips. However, it is not what I asked. I can't upload pictures to Instagram or anything with a Dropbox because I have no Instagram account, hence this thread. I have no Android and I need way to make account without it. Allan Thank you too Allan. I was actually SEARCHING for solution on Google and it turns out that BlueStacks is best option, at least what I could find. I tried to install it twice and it failed both times because of my RAM memory limitation. Yes, it would be nice to have another GB of RAM, but I don't have it at this moment. And that is why I opened this thread, hoping that some of you computer experts would know, since I am a bit of noob when it comes to it. Do you already have friends that use Instagram, or is there some reson you need to have a presence on Instagram? Really ? I mean, really? OK. I believe you. I will amuse you have a good reason. Let's move on... The issue is getting an Instagram account. Only an Android or Apple owner can get an account. A PC owner can not get an account unless he runs the emulator, which takes up more RAM. Android emulators take up more memory. So the first step for you is to find a friend, buddy or relative that will create a new account for you on their Android. If you can get to that point, you may have it made. I would just create the Instagram account from my PC then login to it with the phone... Maybe i'm over-simplifying things here but that's how i'd do it.Patio, you are right again! Simple is better. Instagram will run on windows. http://culturemob.com/free-instagram-pc-download-steps Quote Now, this popular photo sharing app is now available for download on personal computers. patio That is exactly what I am trying to do, just wondering how. Geek Thank you again. Link you provided helped me to get YouWawe, Android emulator which I can install with my RAM memory. After that, I immediately downloaded Instagram, and just when I thought that's it...this happened(attachment related), leaving me pretty frustrated. I guess it's just not meant to be. Considering your previous post, yes, I would ask friend to do this for me but I have limited circle of friends and none of them owns Android. If there is anyone who owns Android phone or tablet here, and would be kind enough to spend 3 minutes of their time and help me register on Instagram with an e-mail I would provide, please send me private message. I would be most thankful for that. If no, I will have to give up on this until I get Android phone or something comes up, because this is getting frustrating to me. Thank you all for your assistance and help, you have been very friendly and helpful forum. Cheers. [recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]Don't give up yet... In the past there has been more interest in Instagram for Windows. http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/10/3307889/instagram-windows-phone-app-nokia-video Quote ... that Instagram is not investing its own resources into the development of a potential Instagram app. This doesn't rule out the app entirely. Microsoft built its own Twitter and Facebook apps...So, it is still possible Microsoft could do something. Wait a few weeks, if you can.I hope you are right Geek, maybe Microsoft will do something. One can always hope. I'm not sure everyone here knows what Instagram is. Just think Twitter only you don't type anything out. You simply snap a picture and upload it to your Instagram feed. Social image sharing instead of social micro blogging. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 24, 2014, 06:55:35 PM Don't give up yet... I wouldn't get my hopes up either. Instagram isn't geared towards PC use. You can view Instagram profiles on a PC though. Quote from: Baners3 on March 24, 2014, 06:29:08 PM I immediately downloaded Instagram, and just when I thought that's it...this happened(attachment related), leaving me pretty frustrated. I guess it's just not meant to be. Baners3 - YouWave is running Android 2.3.4. Instagram says it requires Android 2.2 and up but that's not true because it's not compatible with my old Android 2.x device. I'm thinking it requires Android 3.x and up. You are going to need something like BlueStacks or maybe SnapPea but I think SnapPea requires having an Android device to sync with. Even if you could run BlueStacks you might not like it very much. It is a HUGE resource hog. I have RAM to spare except when it comes to BlueStacks. It's not only a CPU-RAM hog but will crash your video card as well. Quote from: evilfantasy on March 24, 2014, 08:24:48 PM You can view Instagram profiles on a PC though. Thank you evilfantasy. I guess YouWave can't run it. Actually, you were right, I just want to view Instagram profiles on PC. Sorry for not making it clear earlier. I am not interested in posting pictures but just have a few nice profiles that I found on the web and I would like to have profile to follow them easier. That is why I only need BlueStacks once and after registering on instagram I would delete it and further log in to Instagram with my PC. But it's not going to work since there's not enough RAM on my computer and I can't even install it for 5 minute use. I don't know if you can finish the sign up process but you can try a few of the Amazon Apps for Android : Test Drive : "Instagram" apps. Scroll down the page to see all of them.I did some more digging and found a Windows 8 app called InPic that is supposed to have the ability to create an Instagram account. I also found warnings about using 3rd party apps/software/emulators like BlueStacks, InPic, Gramblr etc. Apparently Instagram doesn't allow people using their software through emulators and hundreds of Instagram users have lost their accounts for using them. So beware... Quote from: evilfantasy on March 25, 2014, 10:37:03 AM I did some more digging and found a Windows 8 app called InPic that is supposed to have the ability to create an Instagram account. This InPic would be awesome if I were using Windows 8 instead of Windows 7. Its like everything is up against my registration on Instagram. I don't think loosing account would be an issue since I would only use Android emulator for creating an account, and if I am not mistaken, everything else is doable with PC only after I log in(like following, commenting etc). Thank you for your help. Did you see my >other reply<?Oh yes, sorry. It seems to me that those apps from Amazon are only to add certain features to your Instagram experience, nothing that would be of use to me... |

Answer» I just passed the 220-601 (Essentials) exam... Omg I hope you pass! I dont think that will help. Isnt the second part hands on? not to my knowledge.. as far as I know, it's an extended set of objectives relevant to the type of environment the Technician desires to work in......I'll be TAKING the 220-602 (90 questions) This exam is geared for Techs. who wish to work in large corporate environments, in a nut shell. and uh, I don't plan on taking the second exam while under the influence ....when I said "brake" I meant a brake for a few days, then back to drilling for the second exam. I'll take it in a couple of weeks, next pay day!ah hot dog! I hope ye all pass know youd hear. Have to wait to take mine but I get a discount when the time comes.thanks.... good luckI still have a while yet Quote when I said "brake" I meant a brake for a few days, That's kinda hard on the car, isn't it? Best of luck on part two! can cause friction and all that.heh, I meant the other "brake" Originally I had it spelled "break", but I didn't feel like looking it up in the dictionary let's see, maybe someone could literally brake for a few days if they were high up on a mountain, and the roads were somewhat icy , but that wouldn't cause too much friction, would it Quote from: AEGIS on May 06, 2009, 02:51:27 PM That's kinda hard on the car, isn't it? thanks, siroh yah, one of the things that I feared, happened while taking the test......about 50 questions into the exam, I had to take a sh** soooooo bad. it sucked.........had no choice but to persevere word to the wise....don't eat too much before going in to take an exam! THATS why I dont but its okay to have something small in the middledo you play Final Fantasy 8? just asking because of your name... one of the main characters in FF8 is Squall I'm into Final Fantasy 7 myself........when I get some extra cash I'm going to buy it and get a playstation just so I can play that particular game maybe...... There is a good place you can get it for cheap. www.hitgaming.comthanks for that link............say, how do you change your screen name around here. I don't see any icons or options to do it.. I want to change my name to Blockhead (for obvious reasons)I cant say, I just attempt to help when I can. I spend that much time on here, that site sells at reasonable prices. I'm happy to report I sat today for the 220-601 and 220-602 exams and passed them both. So, now I'm a certified Comptia A+ IT Technician. I really believe my participation in this forum assisted me greatly, and thanks very much for allowing me to be a part of it. The knowledge available in this forum is like having a teacher beside you every time you log on.......so I know I'll continue to learn each day.Congratulations, Karnac! I know it's not an easy test! (You didn't divine the answers by holding envelopes up to your head, did you?)Thanks Aegis, it was a well rounded exam, covered a lot of theory I'll never use. Sweet Karnac, I bet you feel quite a relief from reviewing and studying. I'm pretty sick of studying and reviewing myself, I'd like to get into some programming and other fun stuff, for a change. I'm currently reviewing for the 602 exam, which I'll take in a couple of weeks when I get paid...If I pass then I'll be caught up with youRelief is an understatement.... If you haven't already seen these I highly recommend them ..... http://www.professormesser.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=43 These videos helped immensely.........Good luck on your 602 Quote from: blockHEAD on May 06, 2009, 04:39:13 PM do you play Final Fantasy 8? just asking because of your name... one of the main characters in FF8 is Squall My friend, The Video Game Pianist, is playing a very good medley of final fantasy music in this video. I'm using them now to refine my knowledge. AS for the 602 exam, I'll be using CERTBlaster, for practice exams. I'm pretty confident that I'll make it through the 602 and I'm excited because I downloaded Microsoft Visual C++ and I'm aching to get to learning some programming and other stuff like writing batch files, hacking (my own system of course), gaming, all the fun stuff. IT's time to have some fun with Computers for a change. OFF the subject, I'm switching to firefox because IE8 is a pain! I'm about 1/3 of the way, also learn some linux and such. There is alot by just doing in self thruth.I can't write batch files, either. Did some UNIX shell scripting a long time ago. Absolutely nothing wrong with admitting what you don't know, and it's getting more and more difficult to know everything about anything, anymore. The A+ cert. will open some doors that even being the biggest autodidact won't budge. Solve : VR basically unplayable on capable laptop.? |
|
Answer» HEY guys! I am having difficulties running VR games through the Oculus link on my more than capable computer, it results in very stuttery gameplay with very low frame rates (basically UNUSABLE ). The laptop I'm running this off of is an MSI sword 15 that has the FOLLOWING specs, Intel i5 11th gen, 16GB of ram and an RTX 3060. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Here is a website showing a more in-depth list of my specs, my model number is Msi sword 15 a11ue-057au. https://au.msi.com/Laptop/Sword-GF15-A11UX/Specification Thanks, guys!!! What are the temps of laptop for CPU and GPU.... Thermal Throttling can cause issues like this. Other thing is are you running latest correct GPU driver or running with driver that Microsoft felt system needed.I know temperatures are not an issue since I have a cooling pad running full blast below the laptop and since the laptop is pretty much brand new the thermal PASTE and dust build-up shouldn't be BAD at all either. With the latest graphics card drivers, I've been using Geforce experience which has the latest driver of 497.09 released 7 days ago. I'm still not sure of the issue though.Try the original laptop drivers... |
