I am using IDM as my download manager.Earlier when i watch streaming videos,a button named"Download with IDM" appeared at the top right of the video.Then i reinstalled IDM because of a software error.Now it is not appearing on the video.Anybody pls help me to reappear it again.

Well my dear friend, here the way to go, I just installed the IDM today and through my little bit of knowledge I know there's an easy way out...



Well first you DON't UNINSTALL IT...
U RUN IT... then at the bottom right of the screen you will see the green arrow pointing to the right. Hooray! You GOT eyes, you can see.. For your info that is the icon for IDM!

Then you left-click the arrow, WOw! you HAve fingers!! great job!

Then the IDM window opens, yes the "BOX" thing..

Next you see at the top panel their are icons! COOL!!

Next you count number 7 from the left... Wow u can count? good going! if your doubtful, its 6th icon from the RIGHT, well that icon is called the "Option" icon.. cool right..

Next you click it, what else?!

Next you will see another window box opens... Yes, you've guessed it rite... its the Options window.

Then automatically, its the "General" tab... wow, the computer can read your mind, cause that is what you are looking for!!!

Next scan your eyes down to the last line!
Let me spell it out for you!
It says this: IDM Download panel for web-players in browsers.

Beside it there is an "edit" button.

Not sure what the cable is called, Just ask the person working at radio shack they will know what you need. Thats If you have a radio shack? are you from the USA or maybe UK. I lived In the UK for 5 yrs.

You may need RCA plugs for the back of your stereo, and "pin" plugs to plug into the sound card.

I know that there is hardware to make a fan quite in a tower.  But I have a laptop an need to silence my cpu in it, there isnt anything wrong with it just fairly LOUD.  Wondered if say like speedfan couldnt do that or anything?Speedfan can do it and is the best app I've tried to control fans.
Bear in mind a few things - it can't control all fans, you can cause heat issues by lowering fan speeds, and it does sometimes require a FAIR bit of work to GET Speedfan working right.

To quiet a fan, you can clean it.  If it's dusty, it will be noisier and less effective.  If the bearing is going, you can lubricate it, but it's best to replace it.
If neither of those apply, the only way to get a quieter fan is to replace it.  You can't replace a laptop's fan with a quieter model though, so I think you'll just have to live with it.

I absolutely love the fact that the wireless mouse was invented.  The whole wireless THING is good. I would be ok using it but I hate it when the thing disconnects randomly, thus I do not want to use it.My BLUETOOTH mouse works perfectly. No disconnections. I got a wireless mouse as a free gift when I purchased a new computer monitor.

To use it, I must plug the receiver into the right USB port. That's how strong the signal is.....

Regarding user profiles on my home computer, my teenager accidentally deleted my wife's profile which RESULTED in the deletion of some important documents in her MyDocs for that profile. i have a compaq Presario desk top that i am trying to do a complete reinstall of windows xp. i am using the Recovery Tools CD. it goes so far then it says it does not reconize the windows EULA. what can i so to fix this?  and then i tried ANOTHER way. i started the comp then when into setup screen but i can do anything cuz it asked for a password, for the life of me i do not remember it. so what can i do?  i SURE do appreciate anyones help this is driving me insane. thanks so MUCH in advance..

~*TND*~I've never used a recovery cd so forgive me for asking, but can you boot to that cd and if so is that how your are trying to do the installation? Or are you trying to do it from within Windows?Also does the CD say what version and service packs are on it...compare this to what is currently installed...
This may explain the EULA not being recognised and will require a workaround..

Here's what you need to make it work
A Windows XP Home or Professional with SP2 Setup CD. It's possible that an original XP Setup CD or an XP with SP1 Setup CD will work, but I've only tested XP with SP2, both retail and volume license versions of the CD. (You may have luck with OEM CDs from PC makers as well, depending how much the company changed the disc layout.) Full or Upgrade CDs work just fine. Previously splipstreamed discs are fine as well. But I've only tested this with versions of XP that include just a single Setup CD: Media Center and Tablet PC users are out of luck.

ok now the only disk i have is the Recovery Tools CD, is that the same thing? i dont have the original.Tell you what. Use nlite - and there's an easy to follow guide there. You can borrow an original xp cd from someone to create the slipstream if your recovery tools cd does not include a copy of xp - not sure what is on your recovery tools cd.

Once this thread got to the 4TH post with the code image, it made it so that I have to horizontally shift my screen over in order to veiw the end of each line. How can I narrow the thread VIEW to make it fit my screen. I'm RUNNING XP SP2 and Firefox if that matters.only way is for manadude to edit his code tag contents.

When I turn on computer there is no activity (blinking lights) on keyboard or mouse, but the monitor starts to fire-up and then says power save, and shuts down, all the lights on the tower seem to indicate it is functioning OK, but hard to tell with no visual, tried other monitors, no help, had this problem a few months ago, went in and checked connections and wires and still did the same THING,unplugged computer and started looking at upgrade prices, 3 weeks later I plugged it back in for another try and everything came on as normal and worked great for 3 months, until I bought a new system, I gave the old one to a friend's little 10 year old Daughter, it was working just before I unplugged everything to take it to the friend's home but when I hooked everything up there and turned it on, now it's doing the same thing. what -up?

First off, I know, I deleted my account, why I deleted it isn't important. The reason I am back is, and the reason I am back isn't to associate with anyone here, its simply to post, if that be to help, or if that be random things like this.

Anyway, SEEING as my sleeping patterns have been erratic lately, I decided to take a 2. something gig samsung IDE hard drive, yank the logic BOARD, and supply POWER from my 35W sharp stereo to it in the form of music, here's the result SUMMED in a video:

Audio quality from the coil is alright considering it is in now way built to function as a speaker. Its just that recording it through my laptops integrated microphone then photobucket condensing it killed the already low quality.

The audio is piped out of my laptop, to my stereo, out of one of the speaker channels, and to the voice coil in the motor. Very SIMPLE, I just wish I had a camera that could keep up. Though, my webcam has faired better than I imagined it would. And yes, the music is coming from the coil that operates the arm.That is really neat, although there is only so much high pitched squealing one can take  Cool! But it did hurt my ears. Hows the bass?Bass? What bass? There IS no bass! And for the record, if you hold the arm still, or remove the platters, it doesn't screech. I think I'll post a video on how I remove drive platters when the weather warms up.

So I edit videos on a daily basis with a desktop I put together awhile back. Its running 3.6g proc,1g ram, and nvid6800. I recently purchased a laptop. its specs are: 4g ram, dual core 2g, and nvid dedicated and its 64bit. The laptop is obviously faster. The problem is I compressed a movie down to about 76megs and on the old computer it runs perfectly, like always. I then transferred, using a FLASH drive, the movie to my laptop. I saved the file to the desktop. When I play the video its pretty jumpy. about every 45 seconds and it jumps, AUDIO and video. Its consistant each time. iv tried deleting the file and putting it back on the laptop. and i have restarted the laptop. I don't understand why. I'm new to the whole 64 bit thing. If i made the movie on 32 bit comp and compressed it with a 32 bit program, would that somehow effect the file playing on a 64bit laptop? i mean i just don't understand what else it could be. both computers are running at peak performance, no background crap. If you have any ideas, I would greatly appreciate it. thank you so much IMO 32 or 64 bit shouldn't matter.  But am wondering what format you have used . compression to WMV, MPEG - or whatever?

I am more inclined to THINK of available codecs on each machine - such that you may not have CODEC parity perhaps.wmv. thanks for the help bud ya Its gotta be codec. Its just been so long since Iv delt with codecs. so I wouldnt know where to begin. im lookin up what I have though. For the ''SLOW'' machine (in vid play terms) - go search for codec paks - there are a few and make sure you have all the latest.  WMV is usually pretty easy but I have found some more recent ones want newer codecs.

A freebie - "AlShow" is quite a nice player and - if it is unhappy with what you load will go look for codecs.  I think too Win Media Player Classic can be found with a very handy codec bundle.alright. I live in Tokyo.  I have a Panasonic Let’s Note CF-W5 laptop that’s about 3.5 years old.  I bought it with a Japanese operating system but re-installed it with Windows XP ENGLISH version to change the OS.  I also have an older Toshiba Tecra laptop (English OS) that is only used as a desktop because the screen doesn’t work and it has to be hooked up to a monitor.

I feel like both LAPTOPS on there last legs and could break down permanently anytime!  As a result, I am considering buying a new laptop.  The reason I am posting is to seek advice about what I should consider buying.  I will explain what my needs are and hopefully I can get some good advice / feedback about what I should get.

1. Size / Weight: Most importantly, it needs to be fairly light because I take it with me everywhere everyday.  It doesn’t have to be that small, but weight is the most important thing. 

2. Speed / HD size: I use a wireless internet connection that plugs into a USB port when away from home.  I often run several applications at the same time, so memory is really important.  I currently have 60GB HDs on my laptops and really need a lot more space. 

3. Usage:  I use it mainly for high-speed surfing, skype, e-mail, TV/movies/videos, WORD documents, and stuff like that.  Like I said, I like to run several applications at the same time.

4. Power Supply: It would be really nice to have a machine with a long battery life.  It would come in extremely handy in some situations. 

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask.  I look forward to some suggestions.
Well, you'll get a much larger hard drive with just about any new one.  As far as I've seen, the smallest HD you'll see in new laptops is 250GB.  From there, it generally ranges up to 500GB.  320GB seems to be the most common on new laptops.

I just LOOKED at a Toshiba on newegg.com that looks like it might be a very good choice for you.  It has 320 GB HD, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium, and, weighs 3.88 lbs, which I believe is quite a good, light weight for a laptop.  And, apparently, the battery life is exceptionally good; perhaps this is due to a slower processor than some other models.  I don't believe newegg.com ships to Japan but the laptop can be seen here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834114730 Thanks very much for the responses and great info.

Budget-wise... Well, I'm hesitant about spending the kind of $$$ I've spent on laptops before. This is because it seems that I'm only going to get 3-4 years max. with just about any laptop before needing to replace it anyway. As long as performance is really good, I'm not sure spending big $$ is anything more than buying a name. Or is it? My Toshiba Tecra (originally purchased in 2002 but replaced by Toshiba over 2 yrs. later due to so many problems) was upwards of 300,000 yen (over $3,000). My Panasonic Let's Note was just under 200,000 yen (or about $2,000).

What are you thoughts on that? I know that I always have to have at least 2 working laptops at all times, otherwise I run the risk of being laptopless if one breaks down.

I guess the most important things for me are weight, durability, speed, and battery life. Well, if you visited the link I provided, you would have realized that prices have dropped drastically since you bought your laptops.  The laptop in the linked page is currently selling for $600 plus shipping in the U.S.  I was in the local Staples store here recently saw at least two laptops selling for $400; I believe one of them involved a mail-in rebate to get that price.  And, even at those prices, the computers had 3GB of RAM and, as I recall, 250GB hard drives.  And, just about any new laptop on the market now will be sufficient for doing the things you mentioned.

Of course, I do not know whether prices in Japan are similar to here in the U.S., or higher.

The reason I am retiring it: Needs repairs and upgrades:

Keyboard is broken been using a USB external keyboard,
 512MB memory is not enough so I would need to buy 2GB of memory.
Battery is original which will hold a 30 min charge out of hibernate, will hold only 25 min if booting up the computer when it is off.

The hard drive is super slow and its driving me crazy so I would need to upgrade/replace it also.

Computer has shutdown/hibernation/turning off issues. The computer would go into a standby mode with an orange flashing light. Pushing power button and holding it does nothing, you have to take out the battery and unplug the machine to get the computer to actually turn off without discharging the battery. If you turn on your laptop and hit the power button to turn off again you get that orange standby light. Also reflashed BIOS did not help.

The total cost of repairing with full upgrade is about $320 without shipping the laptop to Toshiba to find out what is wrong with the turning off issue. which is the price of some of the very low end laptops today. So I might as well invest in a few dollars to get a new one instead.


I have decided to spend a few hundred dollars on a new laptop with a bit more power that will last me more then 5 years (hopefully, everything but battery 3 years hoping )

The kind of laptop I am looking for
1)Intel Processor - Because I am more use to using intel then AMD might get a AMD desktop
2) Battery life - I plan to carry around campus and some places might not have an outlet

3) The outlet/charger has to have ground! I am so tired of plugging in my 2 head charger only to keep hearing pop's at the end and to see like burnt marks near the end.

4) Speed/Power - More speed then power. The computer will be used mainly for 2 of my studies Computer Science and Accounting. I need to be able to compile code with it as well as run number CRUNCHING software. Does not need to be the fastest but it has to be at an acceptable limit.

5) Video - Don't really need a powerful video as I plan not to run games on it, The games will be left to my desktops as I find that games on a laptop tend to be more distracting then desktop.

6) Manuf preferences - any manufacture but dell, I have had some bad experience with dell laptops. ( early 2000ish and I have not dare go near one ever since. I'm sure they got better in terms of quality, but its just a preference though)

Where to start?

What CPU should I get?
The first hard choice is picking a CPU the people I have talked with in class and with some friends recommends the new i3, i5, i7 cpu's if you can afford them. I do have the budget for the i3, and i5's the( i7 seems out of my budget), but they do seem very excessive for my needs especially since they are new and the price on them is still a bit high.

My friends have said go with a Core2duo, do not get a Pentium, Celeron or any low end CPU. Also do not get a Dual Core CPU as Core2Duo provides better performance then the Pentium dual core CPU. There are so many models and version numbers and looking at intel charts all day is giving me a headache 

My next question is:How much memory should I have?
Most comes with 3 GB of memory which seems small, so that means I would need to invest money into getting into 4 GB? Anyone know how long before 4 GB of memory will become obsolete? 

Should I invest with a laptop that has DDR3 memory instead of DDR2?

Im not concern with hard drive space as I don't plan to really need anything that requires heavy storage, files will be backed up to my home server.

Video card- not to crazy about it, looking at CPU specs is tiring enough but to look at video card specs after the CPU, I think my head will explode.


Normally I wouldn't mind doing research before buying a PC, but with all these different models, makes and kinds I am at a complete information overload


The reason I am asking besides complete information overload is because of another reason. I have the worst luck in terms of timing when buying a new PC. When my first PC was brought 64 MB was the standard and I went with a Celeron 500mhz, 2 months later 128MB became the standard and they had the Pentium III out!

The second time I got a laptop The one above retiring. 256 MB was the standard, a few months later 512MB was the standard and some models were cheaper and better then the one I brought. I am tired of always having things brought at a bad time with stuff getting outdated and new stuff  are out so qucikly because of timing when buying things. Even with hardware. I buy it one week next week they have a sale on the item  This has happen when I got memory/Hard drives. All 4 times it happened. Buy it at a decent price, next week they have a sale on the item!

I don't want to be the one who gets something high end only to find out just 2 months from whenever I buy it somethings come out with new balls and whistles , So I am trying to plan my purchase in a specific time.. I will wait if I have to anyting to get past the <2 months outdated already trend. Ex, if I were to buy a better laptop today will the laptop be much cheaper then it was 2 months ago? I understand things get cheaper the older they get but nothing that is major cheap over that short amount of time.

Some other Questions I have:
a) Should I wait until laptops have USB 3.0 out? I seen some on desktop so I am concern if I buy something with USB 2.0 then new laptops(cost EFFICIENT ones) will come out with USB 3.0

b) Should I just invest in the upper end laptop and hope for the best?

c)When is it a good time to buy? (When sales occur/ when are they least likely to release something new allready)

d)What should I look out for (avoid, besides EXTENDED warranty, certain CPU, computer manufacturer. )

e)Should I wait a bit longer to see what comes out and hope certain laptops get cheaper?

f) Should I also invest in an extra battery? (if so how much will that cost)

Peripherals - You can never have to many USB's I always seem to use alot of USB devices and VGA slot so I can hook up my laptop to a projector for presentations

I originally budgeted $600 for my laptop, but I decided I will spend some extra up to $900 with taxes included only because I want something to be able to keep up decently with something 5 years from now.

Right now it seems like a bad time to buy because laptops seem very expensive, maybe wait around until Christmas or back to school events? Anyone know the time of season when they are on sale or a good time to grab one?


P.S. Sorry for the long read, my post always ends up long as I always feel that I have to explain everything. If anyone have any recommendation on system specifications or where to start I would appreciate it!

Hey all,
So I recently rebooted cold Windows XP Home Edition on my (I know its a little old) Gateway M325X notebook using the system disk. Most everything seems to have gone well. The few drivers that were missing I was able to find on Gateway's website or through Gateway's website rather as they've contracted out service for their older models. Unfortunately two of the key drivers didn't install the ones for sound and ethernet. Since the wireless driver works I'm not really worrying myself about ethernet at least I can access the internet.
The irksome problem is this sound driver. The hardware I'm working with is a Conetexant Cx20468 Intel 8280 the description keeps GOING on but generally its an AC'97 Audio device (help me out if I haven't described it sufficiently, I used Everest, Sys Info to get to that point)
The sound driver that Gateway suggests is Conexant AC-Link Audio Driver version: 6.14.10.0575. This seems to install but then comes up with a failure message. Looking in the device manager the missing component is a "media control player". (I made sure I FOUND digitally signed drivers for all the other drivers just in case they were causing a problem). Error messages that follow from windows media player and the windows sound control confirmed this. I have been able to DOWNLOAD a number of media control players that would seem to work, INCLUDING an older version of Contexant's driver, some Intel versions and VIA Audio Deck. RealTek did not work as an error message popped up that it "couldn't start" and in the driver manager it was labeled with a yellow exclamation point. Needless to say with all of those drivers that appear to work in the Driver Manager still don't produce sound.
Other information that might be of interest:
BIOS will still beep at me if I hit a wrong key, indicating that I have speakers but its more of a tease as there are no other system sounds that seem to work. (I'm running PheonixBIOS which is frustrating because I cannot tell where one would enable or disable sound)
I have installed Windows updates 1,2 and 3.
Anything else I should add.

2. You need to download and install the chipset driver, then install the other drivers.yes rebooting cold means that I formatted and reinstalled windows from scratch. And to the BEST of my knowledge I have not updated chip set. Looking at Intel's website there seems to be one basic chipset download, do I have to go through an identification process before using it? ie how specific are they?ALL drivers for your laptop should be obtained from the Gateway website.So there were two "chipset" drivers on the website specific to my computer, I went through and installed each. (One was Intel(r) Express Chipset Family Video Driver Version and the other being Intel Software Installation Utilty) Even after installing these and restarting after each the Gateway recommended driver installation fails. Using other avenues I can find the same driver just an earlier version but this doesn't work in that it appears to be compatible but no sound comes from my speakers. Should I (re)branch out from the gateway website at this point since there is exactly one option that is a dead end?
   I should add that the ethernet has finally worked, so things are improving

I recently moved to Vienna austria.  I want to connect my computer here but am concerned.  My CPU has a 220 switch which I can DEAL with.  However,  the periferals don't.  I was thinking about RUNNING them through my US power strip through a converter/transformer, but I heard that MIGHT not work due to frequency modulation.  Any ideas.  I do not want to fry my monitor.I think you you have been misinformed. If your PSU is switchable  and accepts the 230V input, it is designed to work also at 50HZ. Incidentally, power does not have frequency modulation, it simply has frequency. US 115V/60hz and European 230V/50hz is pretty MUCH standard for switching PSU. Frequency modulation is radio and is what is used in the FM radio band and the sound portion of most over the air TV broadcasts. The monitor is a different story unless it is designed for the higher voltage.

Okay, newbie here, so sorry if lengthy post.  

I helped a friend SET up a computer (Pentium 2, 256k,  I know old and slow), that was given to her for free.  We upgraded some memory into it and all was well...she even had her dsl set up and working.  The only thing we had problems with was printer not being recognized and speakers working really low.

We got the printer recognized and thought all was good until we remembered the speakers.  Her speakers are new but plug into the middle (a black coloured hole) hole on the back, between the red and green similarily sized holes (all three holes are on the same 'line').  She could listen to CDs fine, although volume (even when cranked) was only medium...we have tested speakers out elsewhere and all was really loud at max, as they should be.  The only whole that would allow her to hear the cds though was the black hole in the center, although that was mislabeled.  

Well, in an attempt to change this (and being stupid), she removed speaker wire and put in similarily sized hole on the CARD plug-in she had previously used for dial-up.  (System is a P2 and is poorly labeled.)  She tested the speakers again, and still nothing from this hole, so powered down again, took out and put back into the black hole (which is above the monitor plug, but below the printer and power cable plugs).

When we started back up, the computer will come on but monitor now will NOT display anything (except once, when blue lines scrolled across like old UHF fuzziness).  The original monitor goes immediately from green to yellow lit, and while computer warms up well (and ethernet connection from dsl even lights up, which takes 1-2 minutes) the computer then switches itself off almost immediately afterward.  Except for the one exception already mentioned, the monitor now shows complete blackness, even though cords and connections have been checked.  When we switched out monitors, the 'new' monitor powers up (as does the computer and the ethernet modem again), but again only green light (this replacement monitor does not have a yellow light to go to), but NOTHING on the screen,  Again, the computer powers up and you can hear 'clicking' when you press keys on the keyboard, but after a minute or two, computer shuts off again.  HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  

Don't know about the beeps as problem indicator because computer new to us and well we can't really say what is 'normal' and what is not.

Anybody got any advice for the idiot newbie?  And, did we fry the video card somehow?  Suggestions for fixing?  And does anybody have any hints on what to do about the speakers situation if we can get this thing fixed?

Next, try clearing your CMOS/BIOS by disconnecting the power, and removing the batttery for at least five minutes. The battery is likely a nickle size, button style.Okay thanks...

Will try the BIOS thing.  As far as sounds go, there is one long beep at the beginning and then two shorter ones.  It does the complete warm-up, but does not work on other monitors at all now...tried on 3 DIFFERENT ones now...but then still shuts off after 2-3 minutes.  Well the BIOS thing help that as well?

ZoeThe beep code that you are reciveing is your computers mainboard trying to tell you the problem.  You will need to obtain the original mother board manual or look it up online from the manufacturer website.  If you dont know it try doing a search with the model number located SOMEWHERE on the board.

It could be a variety of problems.  I would try carefully removing the video card from the SLOT and re inserting it(possibly got mis aligned).  
Secondly you could try removing the sound card and try running it with out.  
Thirdly It could be one of the RAM/memory chips, if it has more than one you could try booting the system first with one than the other****(also a good idea to obtain mother board so you know which slot/bank the memory needs to be in if using only one)****

A relative stopped by today. He brought his computer a Dell inspiration 6000 Notebook. I cant get this thing to do anything on the internet.

He had it set up on a dial up connection from his home but cant get it to connect to any wireless connections. I have TRIED to get it to connect with little avail.

Under Wireless network connection STATUS it states:

It is connected to my set up.


When I click on the internet exployer I get the STANDARD " Page cannot be displayed" white page with black lettering.

Sound Recorder to record without an echo,not the sample recording.If this is the case I apologise,but still need help.Thanks Ron MillerTry clicking on REVERSE, under Effects, in Sound Recorder.  I believe that cancels the Echo EFFECT.I thought that made it play backwards.I experimented with it before my previous post and, as far as I can tell, Reverse just cancels Add Echo.  I would agree the terminology seems odd but, when I TESTED it, I clearly heard the echo effect after clicking on Add Echo.   And then, clicking on Reverse stopped the echo effect.  Besides, there must be some way to cancel the echo effect and Reverse seems to be the way it's done.Hunh. Odd. I cannot account for the odd behaviour that is being reported above, but this is what is supposed to happen:

ECHO - adds an echo to an uncompressed sound file.  You may then save the file, which now includes the echo effect.
REVERSE - reverses an uncompressed sound file (which you may then save).

Neither effect is PERMANENTLY applied to every sound file then loaded into sound recorder.  I suspect that if the original poster is still hearing an echo, it is being added by other software - possible he has a 3D sound card with an echo effect, and that is switched on.

I would not use sound recorder for this anyway - it is far too simplistic.  Audacity (free - see the software FAQ) is much better.

Looking for like a motion sensor security cam that I can view from my phone, receive alerts so I know if someone is in there. There are online services that come at a cost. Google has tons of them. Your IP Cameras connect to a service and then you logon to that from phone to check as well as they have alerts.

Just the other day I saw that they have a miniature accelerometer for guns connected to the gun that can alert an owner by their smart phone to the fact that someone was moving their guns in their home. So if picture isnt needed but you want to know something is moved or tampered with there are accelerometers out there that can report this too.

23 years ago I lived in a mobile home and was robbed by a person who was local to mobile home park who would sneak in and avoid disrupting stuff but they would steal money from me. Some people suggested hanging a trapping trap with OPEN jaws on inside of back door and when the person reaches in for the knob they will lose their hand but I took a lesser physical liability approach and instead wired up a limit switch with a 9 volt battery and a piezo speaker from radio shack with a red LED light so it looked like an ALARM system went off and that put an end to it when they would sneak in when I was at work. They didnt know that it was just a noise maker with a red light to them they didnt know if it was part of a actual security system. The good thing is that they only ran off with about $80. They were foolish and left wet foot prints from my back door to my DRESSER and thats how I realized my money was disappearing.

Later I had a peeping tom issue and fixed that by a mcguyver tripline. My shed had a flood light on it and I strung fishing line through my yard towards the shed. I took a wooden clothes pin and DRILLED a hole in it to attach two small screws with NUTS to the open jaws of spring loaded clothes pin and wired the jaws in series with an extension cord. I took a plastic gift card and poked a hole in that and attached fishing line and placed that plastic card between the two opposing screw heads that were part of the circuit. I tested it and the card slipped out of the jaws and screw heads came together and the light came on, so I unplugged it to set it safely without getting shocked and plugged it back in to be live and at 1am light went on and there was two guys running their asses off in a panic. That put an end to that problem. I set the trip line up for a few months and no more problems so I took it down.Best Buy has a wide selection of security camera systems.  Just fyi, the OP is the current incarnation of Squall. What does it take to invent something brilliant like Windows OS? I mean do those smart people usually have to be drop-out of schools cuz they are too smart and they find everything too easy? I'm not sure I'd call Windows "Brilliant" in the sense that it is markedly more technically proficient in construction than it's competitors; OS X, LINUX, Unix, and Windows are all complicated because of their construction over time and they all INCLUDE intelligent programming, but perhaps some of the "Brilliance" attributed is largely a result of not understanding it. Like the old saying that any sufficiently advanced technology can be effectively magic, any sufficiently complicated software system can look brilliant.

I think a better angle to consider whether a piece of software is "brilliant" is that it breaks new ground and really pushes limits to provide unexpected FEATURES. I don't think Windows necessarily qualifies here.

One thing I think does qualify is 4K Altair BASIC. A Full BASIC Interpreter that included a line editor, custom input/output handling, not to mention a FULL software emulation for floating point math- all fitting within 4K of RAM.
This WEB page is several times larger, just in text, than that entire program. Not to mention that when going to demo the product, it was suddenly realized that they did not have a Boot loader- and they wrote it on the plane on their way there- no IDE or development tools or even hardware access at all. THAT is brilliant.

I regularly have to MAKE a PowerPoint presentation for my study. Then I have a few dozen PPT pages, where I place texts and accompanying photos.

My question: Is there a way to import urls or computer location (C: / Desktop .. etc) with photos and texts? The photos in the EXCEL file are then url locations or computer locations and the texts are in the corresponding cells.

So, roughly visualized, the Excel file looks like this:

In the PPT presentation, the images with accompanying titles, texts, etc. If it can be cheered up with certain COLORS / designs etc, that would be even better.

So for example row 1 has Title X, Image X and Description X, so the title X, image X and description X have to be visible each in their own Powerpoint page/slide. If there are for example 10 Excel-rows, they have to be visible in 10 individual slides, all with their own title, image and description. I hope you understand what im trying to say

ThanksThere is no existing solution for this. If there are plugins that do this, those are your best bet. If you insist on not using those for MONETARY reasons, then you will have to either write the VBA in either Excel or Powerpoint which creates the slides from an excel document.Hi BC programmer,

Like I said, I have no actual practical experience of this sort of thing, but I can imagine that a 'poor man's NAS' with 1 TB of storage attached, even if it is a little slow, would certainly be useful in some ways. There are plenty of uses, e.g. backups, longer term storage, where the speed doesn't really matter (and of course if you wanted speed, USB isn't the way to go, whether attached directly to a PC or not). I would be inclined to give it a try. You sound like the kind of person who likes to get their sleeves rolled up and have a tinker with things, so it'll be a bit of fun at the very least, and not a heavy expenditure.

Or you could think of alternative uses for the USB drives, e.g. get a multimedia streamer, that is, a device with a USB socket and video and audio outputs that you plug into a TV and hi-fi, and put dozens and dozens of movies on the USB drive...

In the past there has been more interest in Instagram for Windows.

I immediately downloaded Instagram, and just when I thought that's it...this happened(attachment related), leaving me pretty frustrated. I guess it's just not meant to be.

You can view Instagram profiles on a PC though.

Even if you could run BlueStacks you might not like it very much. It is a HUGE resource hog. I have RAM to spare except when it comes to BlueStacks. It's not only a CPU-RAM hog but will crash your video card as well.

I did some more digging and found a Windows 8 app called InPic that is supposed to have the ability to create an Instagram account.

I also found warnings about using 3rd party apps/software/emulators like BlueStacks, InPic, Gramblr etc. Apparently Instagram doesn't allow people using their software through emulators and hundreds of Instagram users have lost their accounts for using them. So beware...

I really believe my participation in this forum assisted me greatly, and thanks very much for allowing me to be a part of it.
