Solve : Downloading service manual for laptop?

Answer»

Hello,

Laptop Acer Aspire 5250 - BZ479

My laptop is completely dead. I have to disassemble it for trouble shooting. I need to down load a service manual for this model, or at least, information on disassemble procedure for this particular model. Could you please give me a link(s) to such a web PAGE.

Thank you.

Was it not listed here:

http://help9pm.com/pdf
But is not want he wants.Hello Geek-9pm,

Thank you for all your help, but I am not out of the woods. Let me explain. This is my first time with a Laptop. I have no problems with a Desktop.

The disassembly, as you know, is quite different from one laptop to another. Being a novice, I am just being careful here, not wanting to take out the wrong screws, push and pull and lever from the wrong places and get into trouble, by breaking something. I did manage to expose the hard disk and memory, but I get STUCK there. I have seen some other service guides, and they have much VALUABLE information too, including trouble shooting instructions that are different for each model. So, I am looking for a little more help.

I am quite CONFIDENT that I can do this, if I can lay my hands on the service manual, or even disassembly instructions, at least. My knowledge of electronics is quite adequate. I have been dabbling in them for 50 years. My speciality, in fact, is valve (tube) technology. I have a house full of tube equipment going back to the 1930 s'. One of the great things about them is, that you don't even have to disassemble them for trouble shooting. It takes only a minute to take out the cover of the most complex equipment and you are in business, because all the components are immediately exposed and accessible to the probes of your test gear!

Your attempt to help is greatly appreciated. I'll just 'hang around' the forum, to see if anyone else also can come up with something.

Best regards.

Solve : VPN security services?

Answer»

What is the feeling of CH members re these "VPN' security network programs? Having absolutely no EXPERIENCE with any of them my concern is that a tremendous amount of trust NEEDS to occur. These sites are as far as i can determine are  "pathways" through a server that promise a great deal of encrypted PROTECTION and anonymity to the user. However while there are ratings as to the degree of what the server may or may not retain of the data and/or personal information re the user (such as IP address) in my opinion this is where the "trust" element is involved. MANY people/organizations purport to adhere to many things as a demonstration of their commitment to aspects of their offerings (be they services or products) and the next one to be found to be not being truthful would be far from the first and certainly won't be the last. My interest in this process is not for nefarious activities. Quite the CONTRARY it is to potentially avoid such activities being inflicted on me. In other words to minimize  my vulnerability to would be invaders of my security and personal information. I don't think i am being paranoid. It is well established that people of ill intent do do bad things to others via the internet so i believes it behooves us to apply as much security of person as possible. Is this a credible process to enhance that?truenorth Using a VPN would not improve your security.  In order to create a VPN connection, you first would need to have a presence on the internet and that right there is your problem. Thanks for the comment Rob. But doesn't the user of a VPN become "cloaked"?truenorthPossibly (but not necessarily) in respect of traffic that goes through the tunnel.  The VPN does not "take over" the internet connection however.  That is still live.  So the user's computer (or gateway) is still "visible" on the internet.  VPN's can lead people into a false sense of security.  Provided the VPN provider and the hosts at both ends of the tunnel are trusted, the traffic going through that tunnel is pretty secure.  But any traffic that falls outside the tunnel is just as vulnerable as ever.Excellent clarification Rob...Thanks Pat!Rob,Excellent description--very easy to comprehend. My initial concern was the "tunnel" portion in regards to the provider and the trust aspect. However i now can see there is more to it than that. truenorthNo problem.

Email [email protected] and tell them about it.
They used to (maybe 3 years ago or so) offer a £50 reward for reporting piracy.
So I RUSHED to find it when I found someone selling pirated copies of about 20 programs, but they didn't offer a reward.

Solve : Converting language of .avi file?

Answer»

I was wandering, if there is a way to change the audio language on my .avi file.

See I downloaded a film, but the film was in Spanish which I don't understand. I wanted
the English version. I wandered if there is a way to change the language of it.

My FRIEND told me it cant be done, but I'm pretty sure it can. If you can download SUBTITLES for it there must be some way to download different language (audio), maybe you have to covert to a different file I don't know.

Please helpThis can't be done... The audio for the file is encoded ALONG with the video, so you'd have a pretty hard time in doing this.

The subtitles are just something that runs alongside the file, its not an essential part of it.

EDITThis can't easily be done

My mistake, I MEANT to write that ^^

I'm no expert on A/V but I'm guessing you would have to re-encode the file with the new Endligh audio... Which, I would ASSUME, would be very difficult to find.

But yeah, the word "downloaded" and "film" in the same sentence does sound dodgy.Actually it is possible, you need VirtualDubMod and an English version of the soundtrack. But I have no idea where you would get that. Actually I'm not entirely sure what you're doing is legal either... when you put downloaded and film in the same sentence you could easily get the idea that this was a pirated movie.

Solve : Cheap Energy Electricity?

Answer»

huh? I see that Steorn scam is coming unravelled... Perpetual motion machines are impossible. End of story.

Such as? I am not aware of ANY perpetual motion machines that have ever been made.
It's easy to Google, but here's an example anyway.
The "water screw" perpetual motion machine from a 1660 woodcut. Water falling from the tray at the top of the machine spins the water wheel (left), which powers, through a series of gears and drive rods, a screw pump that returns the water to the tray. Friction would have removed most of the ENERGY from this system very quickly, reducing the flow of water until the wheel stopped.

Not the best example, but an example nonetheless.Lol Steorn. "Technical difficulties"

Yes I know. I think we were at cross purposes before, I meant that there have never been any successful perpetual motion machines. That is, machines that remained in motion perpetually. (How would ANYONE prove it?) There have been, as you have noted, any number of wheels with hinged flaps, "magic magnet" devices, etc. NONE have ever remained in motion for more than a few hours.

well if you were to try to make a perpetual motion device, i think magnets and water are the way to go. for example, you could have  ramp shaped like  U but not with the vertical parts, have a metal ball rolling from the left side to the right side, in time with a magnet swinging from a wire on the right side which will attract the ball, and will make the magnet come towards the ball each time it swings, MEANING, if you get your timing right, you can have a magnet that swings and a ball that rolls.
if you get what i mean. that was just an example and i didn't really think about it, it also just used magnets, but ok.Air resistance would slow the swinging magnet.

Anyway there is this thing called the second law of thermodynamics.

let's just SAVE ourselves some trouble and make our own laws. Scientific laws are descriptive, not prescriptive like human laws. That is, they are derived from observations and experiments, not made up because someobody thinks they are cool.

Solve : Computer + Screen Malfunction?

Answer»

Right, had no idea where to post this nor what the title should be, so excuse me if it's the wrong forum and/or wrong title.

So, I better get started. Whenever I turn on my computer, the screen responds, having the on-button glowing green, but then immediatly goes orange, which is stand-by. Also, to turn of my computer I simply have to push the on-button once, without having to hold it for a few seconds.

Can anyone help me with this? I have no idea what the problem is or how to fix it. What I do know however is that a little while ago I had a problem with my graphic-card, and subsequently had to uninstall the driver in safe-mode. What I forgot when I finally got into Windows again, was reinstalling it. I doubt this should be the initial cause for the problem I have right now, but you never know.

Thanks in advance. And is this hardware or software related?I doubt this is the problem, because when you don't have graphics drivers installed, Windows loads generic drivers to USE until the correct ones are installed.

When you start the system up, are the fans etc staying on? or is the system resetting itself constantly?

Have you made any hardware changes after you had the graphics card problems?

COULD be a few things CAUSING this... but the things that spring to mind first are:

 • Graphics card has/about to die - Are you able to swap this with a known working card?
 • PSU - especially if the system is constantly resetting itself... again, you could try swapping this for a known working PSU of equal or higher wattage than your current one.

Could also be related to other hardware but I'll wait on a response before going furtherI have had no hardware changes since this happened.

The fans stay on, and the computer never restarts nor resets, it just KEEPS going untill I turn it off, and that just requires one little push on the on-button.

Could be hardware malfunctioning, as I doubt it's got anything to do with the screen. The problem is that it worked just fine a couple of days ago, and now it's IMPOSSIBLE even to get an error message.I would start off by swapping your graphics card with a known working one into your system, to see if you get anywhere.

Solve : Your opinion please?

What, in your opinion(s) is a GOOD, inexpensive (under $100 or there-abouts) laser printer? I have a client who is going to print mainly text and I've told her that a laser is a better option than an inkjet.

I prefer BROTHER printers but your opinion is appreciated

Alan <><  I have always had good luck with Epson printers...the only brand i wouldn't recommend is HP on account of their bloated/invasive software. The hardware side is FINE though.I'll probably get shot for saying this... but honestly I like Lexmark a lot. They're inexpensive (good while I was in college ) but I've never had any major issues with them even though I know they are not the greatest of namebrands. I STILL like them. But there's my 2 cents. Thanks guys.

Solve : Help on getting out of ms-dos?

Answer»

I loaded a GHOST program, ran it, it failed and now I am stuck in ms-dos.  I have windows XP and am not very comp literate.  Any thoughts?cand you reboot into safe MODE I cannot.  When I reboot (even using the f8 key) it takes me to a screen that says:

PC DOS 7.1 startup menu

1.  RUN Noron Ghost

2.  Return to windows w/o running norton ghost

Enter Choice:

I choose 2 and hit enter and get a blinking cursor? You say you ran a ghost program... Where exactly did the ghost program fail? Was it while you were doing a backup or RESTORE?during backup-

I am not sure that it ever started b/c I started it and walked away.  Hours later it still had the intial hourglass on it and the system was unresponsive.  So I rebooted.  It comes back to the same MS-Dos screen each TIME I try to reboot.

Solve : Halo 3 Warthog?

Answer»

I don't know if you've seen this very good Halo 3 trailer but the guys who created this VIDEO also made a real fully functional Warthog.
http://www.wetaworkshop.co.nz/projects/filmography/galleries/halo3

I have no idea if it is real or not but I really hope so. Awesome off-road vehicle!Pretty cool. Doesn't really look real THOUGH. Well, someone could actually make a Warthog (well, besides all the unlimited ammo and such...), because in Batman... something (the most recent one), the Batmobile was actually real.Yeah, the batmobile is so cool. With the warthog, you need 4 individual motors on 4 separate wheels with crazy suspension to bring the car to about 50 MPH. I bit complex, not to mention how heavy the car is with all that armour.

Just WONDERING if they will produce 'civilian hogs'  interestingduuude... how can you say it's not real?!?!
even if it isn't you should hope it is!!! fools!
i want one >.<
*hides in corner and CRIES*It looks awesome! Judging by the shadows and stuff it honestly looks real, but I GUESS you can do a lot with photoshop stuff. But whether it's real or not it's pretty sweet looking. I want one now! Well if you look at that trailer, most of the scenery is real and there are shots if warthogs under construction so anything is possible...

The thing is that, the artist and album title columns are now empty, and i don't know why, because they were filled before. The FILES are still tagged, but nothing shows up there. Without these, I can't organise my files and know who made a song or whatever...

Hope someone can help!

Good luckAs you can see, the details are all showed. It as nothing to do with view=>details What's not appearing is the tags of the file: the artist and the album name, but nothing changed in the tags from before, they're still there, they're just not showing anymore...The image does not load....You can view his image using this link.

Solve : Your opinion...again?

Answer»

OK, so the client has a change of heart.  Now I need your expert advice on a digital camera (which I know very little about) and a color printer that does photos well.

I personally prefer a color LASER.  They are relatively inexpensive and from the qualityy that my brochures and business cards look like, well worth the PRICE.  Inkjets suck the ink & money out of you

You thoughts are appreciated

Alan <><  What's the price range you want to stay in for the camera? Also are you still wanting to stay in the "under $100" price range for the printer?I'm not sure about the camera.  A friend gave me his old one so I've never had to price them.  A couple of hundred maybe?

I think the client will pay a decent amount for a color printer.  I suggest a laser as the prices are now within reason.  I have a Xerox 6120 that I use for my business cards and brochures and they come out fine.

Thanks beanhead07

Alan <><  Alan, I'll do some checking on the cameras for you, I don't know a whole lot about the printers but if you like the one you've got maybe one like that will work for your client? But I'll check on the cameras and post back the results. What does your client want to use this camera for exactly? (besides "taking PICTURES" lol) Like what kind of pictures are they going to be taking (just personal ones or doing more professional stuff) just to help me better know how to look. Hope this made sense.Alan, I did some research and found that the Canon PowerShot A630 seems to be a very popular camera and it has very good print quality according to all the reviews. But you can check it out it's around $200. But it seems to be a very nice camera. Hope this helps. Thanks for the research, beanhead07    It's not like I don't have a whole lot to do

Alan <><  no problem alan, i'll keep looking for ya. I know Amazon.com had that canon for $190 and Dell had it for $200. But I'll do some more research and see if i can't FIND anymore.I have the A430, and I can testify to the quality of the images and the camera itself.
The A630 is two up the line from mine, so should be even better. For reviews written by users, visit http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/ and click on a selected model.  I see the A630 is a whopping 8 Megapixels (MP).  The whole MP thing is just getting out of hand.  I can get decent 8x10 prints from 2MP camera, although, of course, I would want something with higher MP if I were frequently making 8x10 prints.  For many camera users, a 3.2 MP is quite adequate.  Oh well, maybe I shouldn't go into this MP discussion.  You go with the flow, I GUESS, and the flow is toward ever-growing MP capacity.

But, if your client would like to spend somewhat less than $200 and still get a camera that will take nice pictures, that's easy to do nowadays, with camera prices being what they are.

Concerning printing of pictures, is your client set on doing their own printing?  Keep in mind that printing your own is not necessarily the most cost effective option for everybody.  Using Wal-mart's photo center or any one of various other in-store options from other retailers, or using an online service such as shutterfly.com, is an easy way to go.  For me, I see such services as the more cost-effective way to get some prints developed than doing it at home.  I agree about the whole MP issue, my A430 is 4MP and that was never the primary concern when buying.
A4 prints look fine to me from that.
I think that the only reason cameras are being made with more MP is because it sounds good - average Joe camera-buyer doesn't read tons of reviews, he goes into a local store and is dazzled - 10x zoom!  8MP!  Wow!  He goes home happy with his amazing buy, only £300.
But . . . it's 2x optical zoom and no one bothers explaining that digital zoom is worth nothing, and that he doesn't need 8MP for a postcard print . . . and that he'd have been much better off with the £100 camera he ignored because it only had 4x zoom and 4MP.
Get what I'm saying?Hey folks,

Thanks for the great input

I think I'll go with the A630.  Good price and MP factor.  BTW, these folks haven't had a new computer in years so the one I build plus all the peripherals will be an "out-of-this-world " experience for them.

soybean...
Yes, they will be doing their own printing.  They want to stay away from the inkjets due to expensive (and frequent) replacing of ink cartridges.  We don't have a Wal-mart near us as we live in the foothills, so we have only the local-yocals.  They don't know ANYTHING about the Internet except that it's out there, so for now on-line stuff won't work.  Both are total noobies so I must be gentle with them

Solve : iPod without iTunes?

Answer»

I am looking for the ways of getting rid of iTunes and using the optimal way to SYNCHRONIZE my music with iPod. I know there are number of ways when you google it, but the way I need is the one with no or less installation (or tiniest one) and easy (minimum steps) to use. I have tried WMP11 with Plugin, Ephod (stalndalone program), Winamp with plugin (no result), Monkeyboard and etc. Only Ephod I can say is closer to what I want.

If anyone here knows from experience good program (the best one is with WMP 10, I don't want to INSTALL anything on my computer ) that would help me, please share.

Thanks. You could give Anapod a try.  There are a couple of other programs out there, but I can't think of their names at the moment. Thanks CBMatt. Anapod is a shareware and installs bunch of STUFF on your computer.
I am just wondering if everyone else is happy with using iTunes? I think I will go on with EphPod which is 6.5 mb (10 times smaller than iTunes) and very friendly to use with lots of functions.I've recommended this a few times before on the forums but these looks like something you need.

Solve : Link in personal message of MSN.?

Answer»

I tried Code: [Select]... , <a href="...">...</a>But those doesn't seem to work.
Is there any way how you can set a link in you're PERSONAL MESSAGE of MSN?
Thanks in advance

Jonas Can't you just have a link, without tags?
Like http://www.google.com - but I guess you want a link that is a word you choose, not just the URL.
I don't use MSN Messenger anyway, and haven't for a long time, so I wouldn't know.Well if you type http://www.google.com you can't click it.
And Yes I would like to change that to a word like just Google shows and if you click it you GET to google.com
like google

Jonas Oh I get what you mean!
I've never SEEN anyone do it though....
Do you know it's possible or are you just asking if it can be done?Asking and HOPING that it can be done.

Solve : Removed dll from system32..HELP.?

Answer»

hello, i copy some dll's (kernel32.dll and ntdll.dll and d3d9.dll) from system32 and then i pasted them in the WINDOWS folder so that this game could run properly. (since my system32 folder is hidden, when i try to run the game, error pops out showing all the missing dll's im missing, which all of them are in my system32...but since its hidden i guess it cant read it). oh well. so i copy and pasted it, and then when i rebooted my computer.. an eroor pops out saying..

STOP: c0000269 {Illegal System DLL RELOCATION} The system DLL Kernel32.dll was relocated in memory. The application will not run properly. The relocation occured because the DLL C:]WINDOWS\system32\ntdll.dll occupied an address range reserved for windwos system DLLs. The vendor suplying the DLL shou %s %s

soo.. right now i donno what to do to fix it and i hope u guys can help me on it. thanks. The system32 folder is only hidden from user view (and hidden for a very good REASON!) programs should have no problem reading the files in it.
Are you able to boot up in safe mode? If you can, delete the dlls from the windows folder again.
What game is this that requires these measures to run ? ?the game is called F.E.A.R.. and btw.. like i said, when i turn on the computer.. after a few seconds the error message pops out.. in blue background with white letteres.. the kind of THING that wud happen when ur computer crashes..so that means i cant even get to see my desktop or anything.. except that error message that fills up the screen

To Deerpark: do u mean that i was using a user account instead of the administrator? I don't know why FEAR didn't work for you, I own FEAR and can tell you that copying files from the system32 folder isn't going to solve anything. In fact you should never mess with anything in the windows folder, unless you're absolutely sure you know what you're doing.
I never said anything about accounts and at this point I think you have more serious issues than getting FEAR to work. You've never stated what version of Windows you're using, but if it's XP and you got an XP install disc you can try and use the recovery console to delete the dlls from the windows folder.injn, you seem to have skipped over the safe mode suggestion. Is this an " ahem" copy of FEAR ? ?no its not a copy of fear.. ok this game didnt work for me and gave me an error message incluidng all the DLL's i need to be able to play, which are all in my system32 folder which is apparetnly hidden for some reason, specially in this computer..so i copied some of the DLL files i needed.. about 2 or 3.. and pasted them in the WINDOWS folder, so that the game can read the DLL files, since my friend told me.. (which i misunderstood, he meant for me to DOWNLOAD the DLL's and put them in the WINDOWS folder instead of extracting/copying it from the system32 folder). so then, my computer froze and i rebooted it and then the error message that i said above in my previous post popped up, therefore making my computer USELESS since whenever i turn on my computer that message pops up. (im using my laptop to write this msg btw) So.. is there any hope of fixing the computer?oh right..did  i mention i cant get into windows? i guess i'll have to format my pc.Try doing a repair install of XP.
But please let me stress... DO NOT copy any version of those dlls to your main windows folder. These dlls belong in the system32 folder and shouldn't be anywhere else!
If your friend is telling you to do this, he is giving you very bad advice that will end you up in the same situation again.                        Repair Install of XP

I suggest reading it thru thoroughly paying special attention to the warnings.

Then print out a copy for reference.

Good Luck.nono.. that friend is RLY good with computers. he said the samething about nothing should leave or be removed from the system32 folder. he told me to donwload them and put them in WINDOWS FOLDER instead, which is completely harmless. anyways i wanna thank all of u for trying to help me with this problem and another friend of mine is gonna help me format the computer. thanks

Solve : Creative Zen Vision M stopped working?

Answer»

Before I start, let me say that this is not my problem, it's a friend's.
So I don't have the computer available now, nor do I have any more info unless I call and ask him.

He has a Creative Zen Vision M 30Gb music player, and a HP NX6125 laptop with XP Pro.
A few weeks ago, it suddenly stopped working, for no apparent reason.  He says he made no changes, he just plugged it in one day and it was fine, the next day this happened.
When he plugs it into a USB port, he gets the found NEW hardware wizard.  If he follows it through, he gets a message saying there was a problem installing the hardware.
If he cancels the wizard and uses the disk that came with the player, it says it INSTALLS fine, but does the same thing next TIME he plugs it in.
Whichever way he installs the player, it does not work - it charges the battery and the screen lights up, but it cannot be seen by My Computer, WMP10 or Creative MediaSource.
It used to say "docked" on the screen and show up fine.
The same player works fine on my laptop.
So far, apart from the above, he has tried uninstalling the player from device manager, with the same results.

Does anyone have any ideas why this would be happening or what to do about it?
He needs his player working ASAP.
Thanks in advance.

Solve : Job hunters hire experts to clean online image?

Answer»

Reuters
Updated: 9:08 a.m. ET Aug 6, 2007

NEW YORK - JOB hunters perfecting their resumes for that dream job are being urged to also polish their online profile -- and clean it up if need be, with a new breed of companies emerging to help mold Internet images.

Recruitment experts advise job hunters to Google themselves before stepping out into the competitive job market to see if a search pull ups that blog entry written about legalizing marijuana or drunken party photos with friends.

"The internet brings a new dimension to the application process. Sometimes it can work to your advantage, and sometimes to your disadvantage," employment Web site Careerbuilder.com spokeswoman Jennifer Sullivan told Reuters.

Various surveys have shown that employers are using online searches to check out potential candidates -- especially as some of the early Internet surfers become bosses themselves.

A study of 1,150 hiring managers by Careerbuilder.com found 26 percent of managers admitted to using search engines such as Google and 12 percent of managers said they used social networking sites LIKE Facebook.com in their hiring process.

Those numbers may be low, but not the repercussions.

Of the 12 percent who checked social networking sites, 63 percent declined to hire an applicant based on what they found, citing lying about QUALIFICATIONS and criminal behavior as two of the top disqualifiers.

But with hiring managers and job seekers using new and different ways to stay one step ahead of each other, new technology has emerged to help both sides of the game.

For $10 a month, ReputationDefender.com will search your name everywhere -- even "beyond Google" -- including password-protected sites, and give a report of their findings.

For about $30 a month, clients can have them do a clean-up, which involves ensuring all links to, for example, a college kegstand on Facebook.com or a disparaging blog entry from a former partner, will not appear during an online search.

"More than half of my clients use us just to search and don't even ask us to clean anything up," the company's chief executive and founder Michael Fertik, 28, told Reuters.

Fertik, a graduate from Harvard Law School, said it's important for everyone to know how they're perceived online.

"Often pictures that are intrinsically innocuous get taken out of context, and then can become punitive," said Fertik.

Pros and cons
While ReputationDefender.com caters to individuals not employers, DefendMyName.com services both camps.

The two-year-old Portland, Maine-based company, a division of QED Media Group LLC, will conduct an online clean-up for any size client, from individuals to large corporations. Some clients are companies seeking positive brand image online.

Using proprietary technology, company founder Rob Russo said DefendMyName creates links to promotional sites and BLOGS on clients in order to bury negative search engine results.

"Online searching has taken on an essential role in the corporate world when people are scouting new employees. It is becoming an actual part of the hiring process along with a criminal background check," Russo told Reuters.

But it is not always to job seekers disadvantage that potential employers can check them out online.

The Careerbuilder.com study found 64 percent of hiring mangers had their hiring decision confirmed by information found online and 40 percent of managers said their decision was solidified by seeing that a candidate was "well rounded" and showed a wide range of interests."

Beth Murphy, an advertising assistant in New York, whose boss admitted to searching her profile on Facebook.com, said being scoped out online helped her land the job.

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/20143819/I heard about this.
However, thankfully my online profile is relatively small - Googling my full name shows very little, and my NORMAL alias Calum just shows me on several forums, the rest is not related to me.haha i would like them to try mine.. its so many different profiles that aren't mine. and unlovedwarrior shows up on forums...

Solve : Misused computer jargon...?

Answer»

My CPU don't work. Here we are calling the WHOLE computer
a CPU.  That one bothers me the most.Wonder who the h**l
started that one? Quote from: street1 on August 06, 2007, 03:52:25 PM

"My CAD teacher was pretty bad, too, in places. He'd substitute the word "pick" for "click". That alone put me in conniption fits, but I couldn't argue with him; he's a former Marine."

Dilbert, I do admire people who have conniptions. I have 3-4 per
hour.What's your norm ?

Not very high. These days, I just have fun with people. Like one time in Albertsons (Food & Drug) I was cut off by these fat women. This was the third time they did so. I just kept running into them. Finally, I got out my cell phone and pretended to call my mother. It went like:

"Hey, Mom... I'm at Albertsons. Sorry I'm running LATE... ... oh, don't worry. I'll just start ramming people that don't get out of my way."

They moved. CPU as a whole computer is my peeve in computer Jargon that people mess up.

My parents dont even try, and my grandmother only uses Scrabble on her computer, and sometimes solitaire.

Ah, well, what can you do?
Direct them to the big DICTIONARY link at the top of the page. I've also heard the whole computer referred to as the hard drive.

Actually, regarding the OP's topic, I'm inclined to point out, if I decide to reply to a question with mis-used computer terminology, that they are using the terms incorrectly.  I think people need to be challenged to put forth some effort to get some basic terms clear in their minds so that they can do a better job of communicating.  I know the feeling, all.
Main problem I have is that my family have trouble DISTINGUISHING between Windows (the OS) , windows (of a program) and programs themselves.
And the computer is a "main bit" or "the tower thingy", whereas the monitor is the actual PC according to them.
Email can only be accessed on one computer, and the modem/router and monitor MUST be turned on 5 minutes before the PC is, apparently.
Not all related to jargon, but just examples of the mad world I live in. Quote from: WillyW on August 06, 2007, 05:37:52 PM
Next time you see your grandmother,  ask her what she would have said or thought if, when she was a teen,   if someone had said something like,  "Can you zap my coffee in the microwave for a minute?"  to her.

Some heavy assumptions about people's ages here... My grandmother died in 1975 aged 92. My grandson is aged 9 and his grandmother knew all about microwave ovens in 1980 when she was 19.

No, not heavy at all.   You just have to think about it.

Dilbert is 16, correct?
It would not be a "heavy assumption" if one were to guess that his grandmother is at least 40 years older than he.   Actually,  I'd be surprised if the average is not more.
So - 40 years ago his grandmother may have been a teen.
2007-40=1967.
Heck,  30 years ago a LOT of people had never seen a microwave - let alone 40.

I clearly remember a friend got one in 1980.    Can't say if that was the first one I saw or not,  but it was an early one.

Heck, you could just ask. She was born 1940. If butchered computer jargon gets to you a Computer Forum will certainly drive you batty...My Dads Microwave is from the 80's, its meant to be used in a restaurant... you have to manually turn whatever you got in there, its wind up turntable broke...

Havent MICROWAVES been around since the early 70's?

Solve : Lost file, please help!?

Answer»

I'm sorry if I've posted this in the wrong place, but at the moment I'm desperate for help.

I very stupidly deleted some files off my memory stick (I had to restore my computer, lost all my files, but saved them to my stick to return to the computer this evening) before I managed to get them back into my documents on my laptop.

I downloaded Smart Data Recovery and I have recovered the items that I lost (my UCAS STATEMENT, my CV and my sisters CV). I've restored the files to my documents and my UCAS statement and my sisters CV opened up fine, but my own CV wouldn't open in MS Word.

As soon as Word opens a window pops up titled "File Conversion- Leanne's CV"; select the encoding that makes your document readable: windows default, MS-DOS, other encoding. The preview below this shows a list of numbers and symbols- nothing really readable (the occasional "Sony Ericsson" in there [nothing to do with my CV]). And when I open the file there is 100+ pages of symbols.

A friend suggested opening the file in WordPad, but I had the same results as above. Is there any way I can convert this information back into my CV? Please, if you have any advice, COULD you help me? So far everybody I have asked for help has said "It's just a CV" but there is some very important information in there (for me, anyway).
It sounds like your document got corrupted. Recovery programs aren't always successful in recovering files, because deleted files easily can be overwritten. If that is the case there isn't MUCH hope of getting it back.
But you could try another recovery software (for a SECOND opinion) like Recuva. Thanks for the advice, my CV was corrupt, as were the REST of the files on my memory stick. I'll just have to get busy writing a new one!

Solve : Meet > The Gerbil PC ;-)?

various case modifications  ...............

Some people hate the boring cases that most PCs come in. And we mean hate. So they take matters into their own hands. Here are ten case mods that take the art form to a whole new level.

(there are 10 different- little articles and pics (cases)  * here's the first one...................

The Gerbil PC
The Gerbil PC was built by Florida-based modders Jason Dumbaugh and Mike Lynch. "We searched Salvation Army and Goodwill stores and came across a CritterTrail Gerbil Cage; for $6, we were on our way," Dumbaugh says. "Forty-some hours later (with spare parts from a birdcage we found at a dumpster and various junk from our garage) we INSTALLED all of our components into the gerbil cage."   ( kinda looks like an old small block V8 )

Solve : retreiving deleted pictures?

Answer»

I have a big problem.  My brother accidentally deleted some VERY important pictures off of his computer, and there is no trace of them.  Trash is EMPTY, and I can't find any backups.  Does anybody know of a way of searching deep within the computer for these pictures, or is that even possible?  Any help WOULD be greatly APPRECIATED.  Thanks in advance. What OS is this?

It is strongly advised that you don't write anything else to that disk for the time being.  Give Recuva a try and see if that helps.  You may also want to try PC Inspector.

If you have Windows XP, System Restore might have backups of the files, but I would try the recovery programs first.System restore does not change the documents and data of the user so I don't think that is a solution. But I will be wrong as I know you're much smarter than me Chris.

Jonas Well, System Restore sometimes keeps copies of files that have been deleted.  There have been plenty of TIMES when I restored to an old point and had long-gone files reappear.  It's a bit of a longshot, though.

From shipwrecks to crop circles, from ads big enough to be read from space to a giant pink bunny nearly the size of a football field, we've collected just a few of the odd and spectacular sights. You can SEE the same images in Google Maps by clicking the links we provide--but you'll get a better view by copying the coordinates in parentheses after each link and pasting them into Google Earth's 'Fly To' box. Jonas Well, the router mentioned by UNLOVEDWARRIOR is way more than what you need.  It's got 8 LAN ports on back; you simply don't need that many.  I'd grab this one while the rebate offer is in effect:  D-Link EBR-2310 10/100Mbps Ethernet Broadband Router 1 x 10/100Mbps WAN Ports 4 x 10/100Mbps LAN Ports - RetailI knew it could be much cheaper!
How did you find that??

Jonas first thing came to mind and it was just an exampleThank you to everybody.

I re-checked the job requirments just before I ran to CompUSA to buy a router.  Unfortunately, another requirement the employer WANTS is a non-VoIP phone -- so I'm out.

btw #1 -- CompUSA has a wireless router for $5 and a broadband rounter for $35.

btw #2 -- The potential employer I was pursuing is TeleTech.  They call these jobs [email protected]  A customer support type of position.  Some of you may be interested.

Thanx again.
Shvibziki bought mine at walmart and it was cheap and works great. Quote from: shvibzik on August 07, 2007, 03:34:36 PM

You really should have mentioned the rebates, which are temporary; not doing so is mis-leading.Please give a link when your talking about prices sow everyone can CHECK if it is possible to buy it in there countries and they can check the price.

Solve : Power use of a computer?

Answer»

How much power does a computer use when on? this includes monitor, hard DRIVE and speakersit depends on the processor, whether the monitor is on or off, and what the computer is doing. Are you just downloading something  ,More data is NEEDED for a more precise answer.....

Tony
Actually, details on your hardware are needed.  To give you an idea how the exact components in your system can affect power requirements, you might visit and use eXtreme Power Supply Calculator Lite v2.5

CRT monitors require more power than LCD monitors.

Do you use power saving features such as standby or hibernation, and monitor off after a certain time of inactivity?Homework ? ? I thought it was Summer... Quote from: patio on August 09, 2007, 12:10:47 PM

Solve : Big Oops -- Forum downtime?

Answer»

Oops, so apparently I deleted / changed some things I wasn't SUPPOSED to while working on changing the new chat  that resulted in the FORUM opening up as a blank page. Thankfully I caught the issue but the resolution resulted in me REINSTALLING the chat. Because of the time it took to upload the files and re-run the SETUP the forums were blank from 12:00am to about 12:15am MST.

Solve : Free Keyboard macro. Video?

Answer»

Free Keyboard macro. Video
This is not SPAM. It is free and no strings attached. (Just ignore the advertising)
MacroMaker 2.0.0.4
Windows XP/Vista/7
Quote

If you are having to perform repetitive tasks, this program will help you out serendipitously. The user can simulate a series of keystrokes, mouse events, play back previous recordings of keystrokes and mouse events...

Have you used this or a similar program?I haven't had to perform many repetitive tasks but I have recommended the equivalent open-source program AutoHotkey:
http://www.autohotkey.com

It even supports getting the RAM usage of a particular process! (may come in USEFUL if you're away from your computer and you're MAKING a build of some program and you want the build to go faster, and once the usage of, say, Firefox, increases past 100,000K because you have loaded up some clips of, idunno, NASCAR or WHATEVER you watch in YouTube, it will start bookmarking the tabs you have open and closing them.)
It supports performing a task only when LOCKED onto a particular process window so your keystrokes won't misfire   also, I do recall a particular function that would allow it to search for the process window. For example you're making a script that types a certain thing into an online game every few minutes or so, and then.. Windows Update pops up! the macro will halt, and keep alt-tabbing until it finds your game.

Solve : Where are the Ultra Books??

Answer» I cm not put this in News. It is Non-News. So it is here in Off Topic.

This item was on money.com about two weeks ago.
Where are all the ultrabooks? - Mar. 27, 2012

And just 5 days ago in Santa Clara new and better ones are on the way.
Intel says 75 new ultrabook designs are on the way

As you must know, the money shoveled into the latest, grayest Intel/Windows TOY was huge. So what happened? Is this as good as it gets? **
Quote
Feb 5, 2012 – In a report on the Ultrabook market, Merrill Lynch forecast that global SALES of Ultrabooks would total 15 million units in 2012 and 50 million ...
That was from a site named ultrabooksnews.com - Really!
http://ultrabooksnews.com/news/business/ultrabooks-forecast-to-make-up-20-of-notebook-sales-in-2013

Comments?

** Good for people in marketing.I don't think that the ultrabook is going to RAPIDLY expand. When it comes to power vs thin-ness, I would CHOOSE the power. That's just me. Maybe you will look at my comment five years down the line and call me an idiot. Example- "The iPhone will never SUCCEED." Quote
power vs thin-ness,
Logically, the next step is to make it so thin it is flexible and can be stuck to your body with an adhesive. That way the temp will never go much over  99 degrees.
It will be called the "Skin Book" and you wear it under a transparent T-Sheet. Passer byes will enjoy the wallpaper on display.Egads...
And the saga continues...

Solve : email to screenshot then to email again??

Answer»

Hi guys, I think this is possible ...

After receiving a email from a specific email address, how can you get a screenshot of your monitor and then it get sent to your phone?

If you would mind telling US, what are you trying to accomplish? If your phone is a smartphone, you could simply remote access your computer through LogmeIn or standard Microsoft RDP and... well be more productive.   Screenshotting an Email and then Emailing the Screenshot while you're not at your computer can only be done by using a macro program. Hi,

The indicator which I use for Metatrader platform gives an alert, then sends an email to me. So when I'm AWAY from the station I can get an idea of what's happening.

I've tried logmein but it's slow to login and/or connect plus it seems labor intense.

Getting a screenshot then getting sent a pic seems way BETTER .... I think

Can you suggest any macro program which is SIMPLE to use?Would it not be better simply for the email alert to describe the problem?  Adding in a screenshot seems redundant.OP can search around for some programs that take screenshots at set intervals and automatically email them...Or pay for a trading app that does it automatically...Unless i am missing something why not reroute the required message to the phone via text message. If the incidence of the computer is also required can you not provide more than one client address to the sender and have messages sent to both units?truenorth Quote from: Rob Pomeroy on April 26, 2012, 07:57:51 AM

Yes, there are but the signals I get are event sensitive so i would need to see the screenshot straight awayWhat about my option in post #6? It seems to me that normally you ALWAYS have the phone in HAND whereas not the computer.truenorth

Solve : What is the Best Converter Box to get for Feb. 2009 Digitial switch over?

Answer»

Which Converter Boxes or Box is the best for the Feb. 2009 Digitial SWITCH over. I just send out my Coupon Offer, my 2 Coupons should come by OCT. 31. I have 2 Converter Boxs in mind, if they are still availble.
1. RCA DTA800
2. Zenith DTT900

Is one of the those or both Good Converter Boxes?

I have the Zenith DTT900 on the patio TV which I've been using about 6 MONTHS. I have it connected to a roof top antenna and it gets a great picture. Very easy to use also.
