Hard to tell if you don't open the box...

That's a very good point, but bear in mind that the packaging nowadays almost seems as if it's designed to keep consumers from the PRODUCT. Sealed Plastic holds your treasured new purchase in a TRANSPARENT tomb of despair, while you struggle with your only tool on hand, a screwdriver, to release the device from it's vacuum sealed slumber.

At least you know it's fresh though. Ahhh, new hardware smell...it didnt seem to work, yet again I didnt know what I was doing.  I returned it cause I have no clue what I am doing since know one is getting me any were with it.To be honest, I got lost on POST 6....  I dont see how?He was thinking inside the box ...but since you didn't open it CDO got confused.

Solve : Certain websites wont load. Tried many things?

Answer»

Sorry this is my first forum/post so the info may be a bit confusing/not useful.

Anyways, we got this new internet (3 dial up with a usb connector and 6GB usage per month). This means only 1 computer in our house (we have 3) can use the internet at once. This isnt the problem, om just trying to give out max info.

Anyways, after getting and using this new internet, it works fine for MOST websites. However, for runescape.com and theninja-forum.com/vbulletin it won't load. For runescape it has never gone past 64% interfaces and for the ninja forum it refuses to load at all. Ive tried deleting cookies, removing my firewall, laoding from a different source, uninstalling and er-installing java, deleting all temporary internet files, refreshing the page etc. and nothing has WORKED.

I have run out of ideas and im wondering if anyone has any clue? They both work fine on my brothers computer so it seems the internet isnt the problem, its just my computer. I use windows vista, 500GB harddrive, 2 GB ram and high GHZ (cant remember sorry).

Again sorry for any inconveniences/walls of useless text but i really want to go on these sites.TRY Ccleaner

http://www.ccleaner.com/What browser?Sorry I have a new desrciption for you all. Yes i did say that they worked oin my brothers computer but i just checked and they dont... sorry for the misleading and i do apologise greatly. This obviously means either both mine and my brothers computers have a problem (unlikely) or our internet has something wrong with it. I asked my brother and he suggested that MAYBE the internet cant load certain types of webpages (too much info/cant?). Im asking if anyone knows anything about dial-up internet connections and whether they cant load certain webpages.

Also, in answer to the question what is a browser? =-). sorry im not very knowledgable in terms of computer tools/systems/equipment. Im only average in using sites and programs on the computer.

Again, sorry for the wall of text and sorry for what was already stated above. Quote from: diablo416 on January 04, 2009, 03:16:59 PM

Solve : Mp3 and Mp 4 Downloads?

Answer»

Lately I have clicked on links to mp3 and mp4 downloads only to find the PAGE not AVAILABLE.  At first I thought it was just that the link had expired or broken, but I have seen that it does this with almost all the links.  Even from previously downloaded links.  I need to DOWNLOAD some training videos urgently, but the page shows 'page not available'.  I think it may have something to do with my pc.  I have the latest version of Vlc player and I have tried using 4 different web browsers, but to no avail.  Could there be a problem with my pc, and what advice would you give me.

Thank you! What is the link that you are trying to access? Have you tried clearing your cookies and temporary internet files so that your computer is not reading a stored cache of the webpages in question?Hi there!

I download audio books and self-improvement mp3's.  Yes, I have recently cleared my history and cookies, and still seen no improvements.  I also recently purchased the Massive Passive Profits software, but was unable to download the training videos.

Thank you for the reply! http://massivepassiveprofits.com/
If this is the website, it looks like a scam... reputable companies would have a structured webpage, usually with a user support base for you to post your questions...

Try using a secure browsing SERVICE to access the webpage in question... if it fails, you know that there is something fishy going on.

Office2K will ASK for a previous version of Office ...at least mine does.

Mine doesn't. Yours must be an upgrade edition.same here, I get no prompt for previous versions either.I found that OpenOffice Impress was slightly more difficult to USE, and not as appealing to work with, but, the end result is very impressive.

It does support exporting in the Microsoft Power Point format, as WELL as importing.
The few templates that come with it, last TIME I checked, are very simple but nice looking and very professional.
Also, Impress works well with all the other programs. Ability to IMPORT Calc and Writer documents may be important.

Solve : problems with burned dvds?

Answer»

am having a problem with burned dvds skipping and freezing, just bought a new lite-on thinking that was the issue but am still having the problem can anyone help me to FIGURE out what the problem isThe major problem is the quality of the DVDs you use.
Another issue is the software you use. And the options you select.

You can search for Free DVD burner software.
On look at this:
http://gofree.com
Look for 'DVD Burning Software' and see what they have.
But if you don't LIKE it, try another place.

A lot of the time it's the DRIVE itself is the problem. From my experience, you can't beat Plextor for burning discs - hence they are slightly more expensive than other BRANDS. Quote from: kpac on August 18, 2011, 03:51:38 AM

Solve : Why make a server?

Answer»

My friend's son-in-law took away his tower and is going to turn it into a server, why and to what point would it help him.A server can be handy on a network as ANYONE who works in an office will tell you. Many homes these days have more than one PC and a wireless network so it can be a very logical step. Like in a work environment, the server can PROVIDE useful services such as file and/or PRINTER serving, media centre serving, web serving, web caching, account authentication and backup services. Because of the usually low number of computers on a typical home network, a home server need not be all that powerful. People often re-use older systems, and a spec as low as 1 GHz CPU and 256 MB of RAM can work OK. A large, preferably fast hard drive and a network interface card are usually all the hardware required. There are specialised Linux distros that can be used for this. Sounds like an interesting little project.
Very concise reply....nicely done Salmon Thank you Salmon Trout and as patio says a great reply. I understand about 90 % of what you say, but would it be any benefit to me who goe's around forums and i also do a lot of blogging. You asked in your first post of this THREAD,

to what point would it help him.

Solve : One Laptop Per Child.?

Answer»

Just to reiterate, I think the very concept upon which the idea is based is flawed.

Basically, the goal is to make it possible for the kids to learn. The problem is that the "Give them all a tablet" approach is a narrow-minded ATTEMPT to reach that goal. While school supplies- Pencils and paper, at the very least- are important, They are only a small part of the larger tapestry that needs to be woven for a working school system. It doesn't matter how fancy or technological student's supplies are if their teachers are ill-trained for the task of teaching, and even the best teacher isn't going to be able to teach very well if the curriculum is flawed. Not to mention, a tablet, laptop, or whatever is still an ill-fitting replacement for standard school supplies; it amounts to nothing more than an expensive magna-doodle.

The idea seems to be to replace expensive(in such areas) consumables like paper, pens, and pencils, with a- ideally sturdy- tablet or other device. This has SEVERAL problems, though.

How do students hand in their assignments? Clearly they cannot simply pass their super magna-doodles to the front of the class. This would require removable storage, such as flash drives, SD cards, etc. I am fairly certain that these are not something you can pick up at the local markets in those areas. And, they are still limited in how much they can store; so we're back to the fact that there are consumables involved. I have no doubt that supplies like paper and pencils are hard to come by in some areas, but I'm fairly certain that it's still easier to get a couple reams of paper than it is to get a 2GB storage device. Which brings me back to the fact that the entire thing is rather likely to be politically motivated. There are a lot of blogs and posts and articles about this, but for some reason I cannot seem to find a straight answer to it. Some of them SAY that it is silly to decry the project as a success or a failure at this juncture. Obviously, it's impossible to know what would have happened if instead of pushing some piece of technology as a snake oil solution to the problem of education in third world countries we actually gave them the same type of stuff first world countries are using- paper, pens, pencils, so forth. Since the only thing the super magna-doodle replaces is paper, pens, pencils, and possibly a calculator, I personally am not sure why the project is heralded by some as a cure-all panacea to the educational problems in the third world. If these devices were so damned useful, OUR schools would be using them too. The fact that schools are still using pens, pencils, paper, and actual physical books says a lot about the actual economic and logistic feasibility of the concept.

Thing is, in all my searching, I cannot find a single proponent of the idea that doesn't meander on about nonsense. One post/article I found says this:

Quote

We have a possible path to preventing global ecological, economic, and military destruction, by bringing a billion children and their families and friends into the search for solutions.
What does this even mean? It's utter nonsense. How is giving them a super magna-doodle going to make them "search for solutions" and solutions to what? How would them getting a few tablet PCs prevent ecological, economic, and military destruction? It doesn't. The fact that many of the proponents of the project can't go a single paragraph without spewing some FUD like that gives me pause, particularly paired with the fact that their reasoning behind sending these devices rather than paper/pencils etc is ill-thought out. Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 19, 2011, 03:01:01 PM
How do students hand in their assignments?

Exactly.

Exams are still on paper. Students don't WRITE on paper anymore - they don't have enough practice. One of the original concepts was to give wireless internet access to under developed areas.  But some where along the line people forgot that just giving a kid a netbook that had wireless access build in  doesn't mean that he (or she) can actually get on the internet, especially if they are out in the middle of nowhere.  That takes a lot of infrastructure that nobody seemed to plan for.  You need transmitters, receivers, and a lot of other stuff to make that happen even for a small area. You critical remarks are quite reasonable. It does seem like overkill to solve a fundamental issue.

As is often the case, the Wikipedia articles need some revision. Still, it is a starting point for those who want to look into this topic.

Solve : Internet satellite?

Answer»

We live in an AREA that does not offer high speed internet, and we have a lot of problems with dial-up.  We are thinking of purchasing that Hughsnet satellite - does anyone have that, and if so, how do you like it?I have Hughesnet and am extremely PLEASED with it after having dial up for many years.  The only problem I have encountered was when we had some heavy snow and the dish had a coating of snow or ice on it and the signal was temporarily interrupted.  But it didn't last long.  The fellow that installed my dish said that if you spray it with that kitchen spray (like Pam) that will sometimes HELP in icy weather.  I didn't try it. so I don't know if it works or not.  It definitely is a lot faster than dial-up.  It took lots of time to download pictures before and now they come up quickly. Thank you so much!  I don't know anyone that has that, and we have called Hughesnet for information.  We are trying to decide though as Hughesnet is kind of expensive.  But dial-up drives us up the wall!  Thanks again for responding.Also...Click Here  to MAKE sure it's not available in your area...many smaller providers don't advertise it but can provide service in rural areas...

Solve : Network cable labels?

I have to put labels on the network cables from my patch pannel to the switch. They want the port number on the cable. My problem is I used a label MAKER and labled them. After a while the glue on the labels dried up and started to FALL off.

Anyone have a good cheap way of labeling the cables?

Thanks
You can GET Stick 'n' Go cable labels in many countries. They are double sided.

Or Unitags

In the US and Canada BRADY products should be widely available. Zillions of products on the web. Or just use paper address labels folded over the cable and STUCK to themselves.

The memory booted up  and a 161 and 163 error message appeared.

I then inserted a DOS 6.0 boot DISK in and it loaded on the floppy- A drive
I tried to COPY over to the C drive but the drive was not recognized.

What do the ERRORS mean and how can I resolve the problem?

Is this a CMOS issue?

Any help would be greatly apprecaited.

ThanksThe drive may be shot...a
At the A: prompt type C: and hit Enter...what does it show ? ?

If C: then type dir /p and hit Enter...this will tell you the contents of the hard drive. There are two major possible things I can think of at this moment:

First thing, On the older computers, you had to set up hard drives manually in the CMOS. Though sometimes they had an automatic setup, this wasnt really that common.
Now, even if you set it, your going to loose it since your CMOS battery is probably dead. Dont unplug the laptop.

The second thing is that often older 2.5" hard drives would fail relatively quickly. Its just old technology, and the mechanical actions of the drive wore out.

reseat your video card.sry for my ignorance but how do you reset a video card?
video cards in laptops are all integrated on the motherboard, you can't "reseat" them...

This really sounds like a graphics ERROR, had PRIOR experience with a few laptops which fit this description PERFECTLY... power light on, fan running, no display, no windows boot sound, nothing. Previously, IMMEDIATE BSODs and shutdown when running graphics-intensive applications.

I solved my problem by unplugging the internal display connector and using the VGA connector for a display... This will definitely void your warranty and might cause damage if you are not careful, not to mention your laptop will never be portable ever again...

I would really take it to a service center-there is really nothing much the end user can do to fix a laptop motherboard because everything is integrated.

Solve : Information Technologies Careers?

Answer»

Hey,
I've always been interested in computers and networking, although I've had nothing but the experience from working with my own person computers. They have some programs at my high school that entails software experience that I'm enrolled in this year. I've always loved the challenge that computers and networking has presented me. What I'm asking is to talk to some folks that are either in the IT field as I would love to hear their opinions. I'm open to any information I can get my hands on, although I'm specifically interested in which colleges have the best IT programs as well as how the job market is.
 Thanks,
Natenate22, Your future aspirations and desire to learn skills is to be commended. You do not mention what country you are in and that could help for those that may feel they can make suggestions re the colleges. You should also INVOLVE the resources of your high school guidance councilors to help you. There may be listings from a Google search in your country for available IT colleges (hopefully also with available rating on them) which you could search for yourself. If some of the ones that appear interesting are nearby go and visit them and talk to them about your aspirations and see how they respond and treat you. If there are any businesses in your area that utilize the talents of the type of career that you would like to pursue visit them and tell them of your plans and seek all the information you can from them as to what schools produce the graduating students they would most like to employ. If they are a forward thinking company they will be impressed that you came personally to them with your questions and interest and you never can tell where that could lead. No, if you think you have done your research, you are the one speaking nonsense. Do have an idea of what the job market will be ten years from now?
Please share your research. What did you look for?
Hugest paid jobs?
Most in demand jobs?
Most secure hobs?
Most common jobs?
Jobs with low health risk?
Jobs with least mental stress?
Jobs with bet benefits?
Jobs that conserve your personal integrity?
Jobs with most satisfaction?
Most universal skill jobs?

Let me explain that last item. You can specialize in a narrow new field, only to find it was a dead-end or limited growth area. The skill set was not universal. So we need a category for a skill that is more universal. For example, Astronaut is a very narrow job skill; a Commercial Airplane pilot is much broader. And the later takes less training time.

One of the most universal job skills is being a janitor. There is a steady need for good janitors. This is not a joke.

The below is meant to be FUNNY. sort of.

When I was young, a long time ago, my elders told me to study TV repair, as it was them a going field. Boy, was that a waste of time!
I should have been a janitor.
Quote
Do have an idea of what the job market will be ten years from now?
No, but I know that the world will be more involved with technology, mainly in the medical/robotic field.

Quote
Hugest paid jobs?
Don't care about money, I love innovation and technology. Although good money happens to be a part of a career in IT, usually.

Quote
Most in demand jobs?
Yes, they are badly in demand and there are no people to fill the IT jobs - at least in Ireland.

Quote
Most secure hobs?
Yes, I think so, assuming you meant "jobs".

Quote
Most common jobs?
Not really. I can safely say I could only name about 4 people I know who are involved in IT.

Quote
Jobs with low health risk?
Not really.

Quote
Jobs with least mental stress?
That depends on how organised you are and how good you are at managing yourself and others.

Quote
Jobs with bet benefits?
Apart from the possibility of a major breakthrough in science, IT, or biomedical etc., I'm not sure there are any.

Quote
Jobs that conserve your personal integrity?
What has integrity got to do with it? I just want a secure job, doing something which I like doing and making enough money to get by. You're looking too deep.

Quote

Yes, I have researched this. The degree I mentioned above in BROAD. Possible careers, taken from the course booklet: Software Engineering, Mobile and Wireless Systems, Computer Systems and Networks, Game Systems, Security and Forensics, Telecommunication Systems, Sensors and Sensor Networks, Healthcare and Medical Systems, Semiconductor Integrated Circuit Technology, Biomedical ELECTRONICS, Bioinformatics, Automotive Electronics, Avionics, Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, AUTOMATION Control Systems, Energy Control and Automation, Energy Generation and Distribution Systems, Electrical Power Systems, Smart Energy Management etc etc.

This is not a recommendation. I have not bought the product. However, I have used a similar product they offer for free.

What is the WinPE?

Windows PE (Microsoft Windows Pre-installation Environment) is a minimal Windows system which provides limited services based on the Windows kernels. It also provides the minimal set of features required to run Windows Setup, ACCESS and install operating systems from the network, script basic repetitive tasks, and validate hardware.

Because WinPE does not require a hard drive to boot, and it can run solely from a CD drive using the memory for dynamic data, WinPE plays an IMPORTANT role for data recovery and system maintenance purposes.

The Windows PE helps the IT professionals in your organization be able to deploy and support Windows desktops and servers in the following ...

http://www.easeus.com/winpe-for-data-recovery.htm]
Run EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard from Bootable Disk

The have a Linux CD that can do basic backup of a Windows OS as an image file. But that is not the same a s real WinPE boot CD; a WinPE can do windows utilities such as chkdsk and more

The new product is $59. Too much for me to PAY..The idea is nice, but $59 is really too much to pay, considering that WinPE is included in the free Vista Developer SDK.Download the Windows SDK for Windows 7 and More
Or you might make your own PE CD using the Windows XP CD.

Solve : help I T and I are battling?

I am a town employee and am having a tiff with IT department. Have a town laptop that has both a verizon card and an INTERNAL one that came with dell laptop. Have recently asked to have the ability to go through dell system to pick up signal in court building. This is due to verizon card being to slow and getting dropped.

I T says no because than someone could get into mainframe system of town. Mind you when I am using a signal say from my router at home or signal available at courthouse. I am just going on to the internet to check something. I am not looking to hook up to towns mainframe or go through towns system.

I am not ever downloading anything back onto towns system only updating files from town so I have current info on laptop. This is done back at town not through internet

Didi I explain that enough?and... what exactly do you need help with? We can't help you circumvent any restrictions that IT placed on the laptop, even if they were justified.Do you know what IT would need to change in order for you to ACCESS the network via your built-in wireless adapter?  I would think nothing, that the change would have to be in your laptop, but I may be wrong.

The only time I can access into the town is when I am using going through the verizon card and use my password.
I ALSO am never uploading iany information from laptop into town main frame. I only copy from town mainframe and update files on my harddrive in laptop

No one else in our department has a laptop and we are the only one using the verizon. Now there may be other departments using verizon cards (thats due to town contract) but this is our department and we are charged for our indivdual department. The program that we use when we are tied into mainframe is only specific to our department and one can not go to another departments program by going through our program Quote from: mason55 on December 31, 2008, 11:46:06 AM

IT is covering their bases. a network is only as strong as the weakest link. If somebody REALLY wanted access, they could write a piece of malware, and look for a weak spot so it can go through the firewall IT has set up. they discover that somebody uses the neighboring, unsecure wireless connection to access the net at times.

Using this information, they could eventually infect your laptop with the piece of malware, which will simply wait until you have logged into the town, and send off your logon details to the malware writer. then they can log on and access the town.

basically; while the situation is highly improbable, LEAVING that attack vector open for hackers can be a huge security risk in the event of a disgruntled employee looking for revenge or a homeowner tired of PAYING property taxes...

This is still a question in my mind.  How would using the built-in wireless adapter, as opposed to the Verizon card, impact security?  If the Verizon connection is set for WPA encryption, why can't that be setup in a connection using the built-in wireless adapter?well, I believe they want to connect to a different access point  then that which is intended

at least, that is how I read it. If this is in fact simply a question of choosing the adapter to use in the same situation then IT needs to get their seams straight, or something, and actually learn about the technology that they are dealing with.It seems to me like the IT staff is very small, inexperienced, or very paranoid from the NT days. The City I work at has an IT staff of 10-12 people and since they have so many people, each being an expert in their position, they can handle securing the system and allowing remote access. If your IT staff only has a few positions, it may be a bigger security risk since they don't have the combined expertise or as many eyes watching the system. But, whatever their size, they know what the system can handle better than you do, and all you should do is ask the question if it can be done and if not, put in a request that they find a way to implement it.

Solve : LP Conversion to CD?

Answer»

To all of you that responded to this post (and most particularly to BC) i want to update you . Today being Sunday i proceeded (following BC's instructions) to try again to resolve my issue with the aforementioned LP album.
Audacity -recorded-exported-burned =success  .
I don't know if many of you are familiar with this audio/video format http://matroska.org/ . I just came across it today while researching some more re Audacity. The authors claim it to be their expectation that it will become the future of audio/video formatting. IMHO unless they can convince the "player" manufacturing world to adopt it as part of their product handling i don't see that happening. The only common player that seems to be able to handle it at the moment is VLC (which pretty well relegates it to computer use only). However it is a very interesting concept. truenorthHave you changed you idea about 'COPY protection'?
Was the LP, in fact, no different from any others? Was it only the issue of the length? Number of tracks?
At first is sounded like you made an amazing discovery, an LP that could not be COPIED digitally. Quote from: Geek-9pm on July 24, 2011, 11:56:45 AM

No LP Record can be copied "digitally", since the format is Analog.

Geek. To your questions:
1. No
2.a) It WAS in fact different as stated in the original post=for whatever unknown reason (still unknown) uniquely THAT LP could NOT be recorded via my normal program of preferred use.
b)There was NO issue of length. You misinterpreted the 400+ .aup files as tracks on the LP. It is aprox. 39 mins in length with
c) 11 tracks.
3. Though NOT amazing ;as stated befuddling.

What I meant was that the LP would have some means of stopping the analog to digital converter from working properly.

What did you mean? Is the expression "digitally copy LP record" a misnomer? Are we arguing about word overload?
How does my keyboard work? I press o N the keys with my analog fingers. How does it become digitizes units? On curse! my fingers are  digits? How could I not see that!

You cannot digitally copy something that isn't digital. You can digitize it, but to "digitally copy" means to copy something that is already digital.

Quote
How does my keyboard work? I press o n the keys with my analog fingers. How does it become digitizes units?
The interface itself is digital. You either have a key pressed, or not. And that directly corresponds to whether that circuit is closed or not. There is no need to convert the analog information of the key movement to digital, since it is inherent in the design. The only work that needs to be done is done digitally by the DAC to account for key ghosting and jumping.

http://phandroid.com/2011/02/01/pentel-airpen-pocket-digitizes-your-handwritten-notes-stores-them-on-your-android/
No. That digitizes it.

Digitize is to transform one type of information (typically analog) into digital information.

digital copy means to copy something that is digital. No LP is digital and therefore you cannot digitally copy it.truenorth,
If, indeed there is something about that vinyl that stops some programs, it is remarkable. From you own experience that did not happened before.
It calls to a mind a problem with trying to 'phone patch' with amateur radio equipment. The bandpass of the amateur receiver was about 3500 HZ. But, at that time, the phone company would drop the connection  if there was a burst of energy at about 2500 Hz. That was the 'in band' signal to hang up.

Do you suppose the LP had some secret signal that would stop some software that has DRM in place? It would only be if the LP was made very recently. DRM is a new thing. Maybe Audacity does not obey DRM?

It is very unlikely and LP would have such a INNOVATION that would block analog to digital conversion.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_rights_managementWhile your link was interesting to read i don't believe it is APPLICABLE to the situation as my post stated the issue (other than BC's input as to the vinyl/cassette --which of course is non digital in both media). As one that has an abundance of curiosity and a quest for knowledge i would be interested if it were possible to KNOW the reason why this LP created the issue it did. However now that the problem has been resolved i shall be motoring on with my life. The one positive  (there may even be more than one) is that i now can use Audacity (albeit to a limited degree--who knows i may even get to use it more). Another tool in my toolbox of life--always a good thing. truenorth

It shouldn't matter how often it is run, I've picked up computers that haven't been run in 5 years, working perfectly.the only way it would "rust" (corrode is the more precise name, as a computer doesn't contain any iron/steel (well, maybe the case)) is if it got wet. Solve : Laptop Charger Help??

Answer»

I have just put together a PA System and wanting to USE my laptop to provide the music with ITUNES.  Here is my problem, everything is fine until I hook up the charger/powersupply to the laptop.  When I hook it up, I get a lot of hissing noise.  I have tried using two different circuits in my house ( power supplied thru two different breakers) and it doesn't help.  I have also tried the system on my generater power with the same result.  All of the equiptment is new so I don' t think that it is the problem.  I will be running this system mostle off of generator power.  Any help WOULD be greatly appreciated.

TIAHave you tried using the regular plugin for the laptop? Or is it the regular one?

Can you identify exactly where the hissing is coming from?

For a setup like this, I wouldent recommend using the battery, simply since it WONT last long.
This is the regular plug in. I have no hissing noise when playing music when running of of battery power, but once I plug the computer into ac power then the hissing starts.  Here are the components of my system, Peavey PV8 Mixer Board, Peavey PV115 Speakers, Peavey PV 1500 amp, DBX DriveRack PA Control System, furman PM-Pro II Power Conditioner and a Dell Laptop.  All of the pieces are new.   The best that I can tell is that the hissing noise is caused by the ac power/charger for the laptop.  I am going to TRY a ground loop isolator to see if this will help.  I just bought one off of EBAY and will try it when it arrives.
Could you identify where the hissing noise is coming from?

With our family's first computer, in 1996, we got "Windows 95 for Dummies" and I think we may have received 98 for dummies with our second PC in '99, but I can't really remember.
Anyway, we now have neither of those, so the only computer related books in the house are hardware/software manuals, l;eaflets etc that came with products.I have a couple thousand computer related E-Books.  I'll be damned if I have to start writing them all up. =] Quote

Solve : USB sample rate?

Answer»

ive seen articles about increasing Vista's USB sample to rate to 1000Hz. i have no idea what the sample rate is!
before u ask, yes i did google it but they were all articles on how to increase it! they all assumed the READER already knew what it was.

could someone please tell me...?it increases the sample rate for USB mice; probably doesn't do much if anything for any other type of device.

Also, I imagine it would slow the computer down, polling the bus that often.by sample rate you mean the amount of times it takes a data reading?
im guessing this would increase the precision of computer mice? Quote from: boo on December 25, 2008, 11:25:27 AM

As far as I know, yes; but the MOUSE would need to support such a high reading. With mice that do support such a high reading, the included software uses a higher rate anyway.

Even so- it doesn't make a huge difference.

One way to compare the sample rates of two mice- at the same "mouse speed" setting in Control panel, the higher-rated mouse will move faster on-screen.The speed the mouse moves on the screen can also depend on its DPI.
Higher DPI, the greater the precision and smoothness. In general, the normal 125 Hz sample rate does not make mouse pointer movement look "jerky" for most users, but there is one kind of program which suffer from a low sample rate: 3d games. The fps rate of your graphics hardware may be quick enough that when you use the mouse, you get  jerky movement. This is why many 3d games offer a 'mouse filter'. this filter calculates the average of some mouse samples and will ASSIGN every rendered frame a caclulated mouse sample. this will smooth the movement very well but RESULTS in some lag, i.e. it takes a while for the game to react to your mouse movements. So there are mouse driver PATCHES out there to speed the sample rate to 1000 Hz. Trouble is, you have to defeat Vista's signed driver scheme to get them to work, and in many ways this is bad for security/stability. Better to make sure that any perceived lags are not due to other causes, since increasing the mouse sample rate is not a magic wand.

Solve : Difference between DVD-R and DVD+R ??

Answer»

I would like to know what the + and - means on the DVDs you use for recording movies. When I bought my computer, it had a DVD player/burner installed and I was given a pack of 4.7 GB DVD-Rs to use, but I've run out of them. I have a chance to buy some 4.7 GB DVD+Rs at a great price, but don't want to get the wrong ones. Any help please? The quote is from one of the links returned by Google here.

Quote

DVD+R are technically superior, tighter specs, results in better quality burning, etc.

If the drive supports bit setting (burning a DVD+R as a DVD-ROM) then compatibility (in theory) will be MANY times better than DVD-R.

Besides that, it seems that DVD+R are moving forward faster and generally have lower error rates than DVD-R.

Also, not so many crappy media manufacturers are on the DVD+R scene yet, so your chances of getting a good bunch of DVD+R is Very good.
All the dubious companies have established lines in DVD-R production, so chances of finding a good batch of DVD-R is just a little harder.

But pay a bit more for your DVD+R, as the cheap ones are usually always a false ECONOMY, especially when you find out a few months down the track that the discs are unreadable

Except for some very early DVD burner DRIVES about 9 years ago, all drives these days are perfectly happy with DVD - R and DVD + R disks. That text quoted must be quite old.

However, if you are burning DVDs to watch in a DVD player, some (older) burners may not be able to prepare +R disks suitably for (older) DVD players. (For the technically MINDED, the word is "booktype".) My old burner bought in 2001 used to burn +R disks fine for my 2002 DVD player with no problems.

Look here Rajesh Chandra http://www.andybrain.com/archive/convert-cassette-to-cd-digital.htm

I specifically mentioned Google because the OP actually ASKED for a list of "establishments" (companies) in Delhi, India, that will do the job for him. He did not actually ask how to do it.

Solve : Is it my computer or charger the problem??

Answer»

So, when I plug the charger into my computer, I have to hold it a certain way to get it to charge.  But I don't want to buy a new charger if maybe something is wrong with my computer.  Is there a way to CHECK to SEE if the charger is the problem(which I think that it is the charger)?  Also, my battery isn't holding much life lately.  I have had the same battery SINCE I got the computer two YEARS ago.  Should I buy a new battery too? Most likely the system board charger pin that has gotten loose and needs resoldering. Common problem with many laptops. What brand is it?

Batteries do not last forever, 2 years of usage is quite some time.

You'll have to get it repaired and order a new battery. That'll probably cost more than buying a new laptop, though. That sucks.
If I take it to a computer repair place, could they find out RIGHT away, like not taking it apart to figure out the problem?

Just be sure not to use the certificates to buy the frame, otherwise you'll find it quite difficult to explain to their management why you need to KEEP the certificate and also TAKE the frame. Solve : Beware of Malware Disguised as Holiday Greetings?

Picked this up at Corrines Security Garden: Beware of Malware Disguised as Holiday Greetings

The Microsoft Security Tips and Talk blog published this timely reminder to Beware of Malware Disguised as Holiday Greetings.  It BEARS repeating here:

The Microsoft Malware Protection Center (MMPC) recently noted the inevitable increase in holiday-themed viruses and worms.

There's not much new about this malware: You get an e-mail or instant message that promises a greeting, holiday image, or music.

If you click the message, your computer gets infected with the malware which can easily spread to all of your CONTACTS.

Remember, take these five steps to help prevent any kind of malware:

.
To read more about holiday malware, see Merry Malware - You’d better watch out, you’d better think twice and O Come All Ye Malware or check out the entry in our virus encyclopedia.

Think before you click!Yet another reason to dislike the holidays... The barrage of viruses RELEASED just to ruin your Christmas! Good thing no one REALLY gets into any sort of spirit like this around, oh say, thanks giving. I think I'd go nuts if there where thanks giving spam too...

Solve : How to create your own OEM logo for your PC. I thought it was pretty novel.?

Answer»
For Win Vista/7: Prepare your own OEM logo or image, cut / crop /SHRINK it to 120×120 pixels and save it as a Bitmap file.

Copy the BMP file to %windir%\system32 folder as OEMLogo.bmp.
1)Press Win+R to bring up the RUN box.
2)type in %windir%\system32 and press enter.
3)copy the BMP file to the system32 directory and rename it to OEMLogo.bmp.

Next, open up Registry Editor.
1)Press Win+R to bring up the Run box.
2)Type regedit and press enter.

Browse to this Registry path:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\OEMInformation

(If you can’t find the OEMInformation key, right-click the CurrentVersion key, select New followed by Key option and name the new Key OEMInformation)

While at the OEMInformation key, right-click on the right-pane, select New followed by String Value:

Create the following keys:

6) Name of Key: SupportPhone
Value of Key: ...
If I have not been clear enough, here's an example of what the EDIT key box should look like.(I'm on XP so I can't browse to the actual directory I listed above.)

The finished result will be visible in the System Properties section.

For WinXP: Create a BMP file, but with dimensions 120x180 pixels. 120 pixels HIGH, 180 pixels WIDE.

1)Press Win+R to bring up the Run box.
2)type in %windir%\system32 and press enter.
3)copy the BMP file to the system32 directory and rename it to OEMLogo.bmp.

All WinXP needs is a simple oeminfo.ini file to display the logo and customized info.
Go to notepad, then paste this in:
----------------------------------------------------------
[General]
Manufacturer=We'll go with Apple.
Model=Mac Pro.
[Support Information]
Line1="This computer is manufactured by Apple through its"
Line2="1 infinite loop system and this Mac Pro is therefore prone to many"
Line3="device driver infinite loop BSODs. All Rights Reserved, Apple Inc."
Line4="Contact Steve Jobs at Apple.com"

-------------------------------------------------------------

You can create as many lines as you want in the similar format.
If you don't know how to save in .ini format, look at the sample picture below.

Save as type: All Files, File name: oeminfo.ini

•IncrediMail          << Hard to believe!
•Mac OS X Mail

•Windows Live Mail
.. any many otters, Plus Mobile Devices and smart phones.

Basic GNAIL settings are:
•Gmail IMAP PORT: 993
•Gmail IMAP TLS/SSL required: yes
•Gmail SMTP port: 465
•Gmail SMTP TLS/SSL required: yes

For much more details, see the article in the link above.
And by the way, by using SSL and alternate ports, this works with any ISP that blocks email port 25.

This has helped me.

Yes, I already knew that.    BTW, the gmail account I used in the test with my mother's COMPUTER on an AT&T account (discussed in another of your forum discussion topics) was using SMTP port: 465.  My impression is that many POP/IMAP email providers have stopped using port 25.  If AT&T is, indeed, playing policeman with port 25, that should be an incentive to avoid using any non-AT&T account with them that uses port 25. Solve : Thanks to all who give up their time?

Answer»

Hello everyone,

Just wanted to say thank you.    I rarely GET in to trouble with viruses etc as I am very cautious but as I am sure you all know sometimes it cant be helped and we all fall prey.

It is very reassuring to know that there are people out there who give up their time for free to help out people like me who WOULD OTHERWISE have no IDEA and would be left with options of reformatting or paying a professional to sort out the matter, neither of which are appealing.

So thank you to all of you out there and know that you are all very well appreciated for this invaluable service.

Hope you all have a great CHRISTMAS

Cheers  Same to you as well...

And thanx for the kind words.Merry Christmas And a happy new year!Don't forget Festivus ! ! !

Solve : WinCE for Navigator. Whats That??

Answer»

I have a navigator that I purchased from Aldi, in Australia. (and to be honest) it would be the best investment I have ever made.

My PROBLEM though is, that I have had it for 4 years now and obviously the mapping data is out of date.

Now I really like this unit because it lasts for 7 hours on one charge, the directions are spot on, nice voice, it is pocket size and has a pouch made specifically for it.
So far I have bought three other NEW GPS systems and didnt like any of them., so I sold them on to someone else.

My GPS is a Tevion or Medion Brand PNA315. It must have the mapping data in the unit because the SD card is an external unit that has only my music files on it.

I have searched a lot of GPS sites to get map updates (and the official Medion Site) but have not been succesful in updating the maps to 2011.

During my search, I read about WinCE mapping or data compatable maps, but I have no understanding of what this all means.

Can someone please help me to update the maps on my old GPS system?

Thyank you ImnoGuru. Many people seem to be experiencing a similar problem with updating this brand of GPS device. It seems that Aldi kinda cornered the sales market on them . Here is a link to a solution (but looks like a DIFFERENT model) that may have a solution for you within it. good luck, truenorth
http://www.gpsaustralia.net/forums/showthread.php?t=7938Thanks truenorth for your link. I have scoured pages and pages of forums and the like for info on getting map updates. I dont even mind paying for them if they are really up to date.

I know it is a lot cheaper to just get another one, but this one is SENSATIONAL by comparison to all the new ones.

There's a lot of reading in there, so I'll TROLL through a few hundred or so more pages and see if it is possible.

Just reading briefly through the first page it identifies winCE 6 and my navigator is CE 5 which is (apparently) more compatible with XP, which is what I use mostly out of my desktops.

I wonder if I can take a BACK up of the original before I jump in boots and all with this?Been Here ? ?Wow thanks patio, that is exactly my model.

I would truly just buy a new one with todays maps if I could find this unit for sale with 2011 maps. I'll scour this site and see what bounty it brings.

Imho they are the best unit i have ever used and address all the requirements that suit me for navigating in Australia.( They do have some drawbacks though, such as the thickness of the unit, but I can live with that for now.)

Mind you of course, I dont have an Iphone or a HTC or similar either.

I am certain there are lots of better units, phones, call plans that provide a phone and all sorts of other ways to update.

It has cost me a small fortune buying one, not being happy with it and selling it on to someone else and committing to another for the same result.
I think I am up to my ninth purchase of new products, so I decided to STICK to this one.

Thanks for your assistance.

Baby steps for this budding techy.
