Answer» I found an old IBM L40 SX laptop at a tag sale and PURCHASED it. Fortunately it came with a power CORD and adaptor.
The memory booted up and a 161 and 163 error message appeared.
I then inserted a DOS 6.0 boot DISK in and it loaded on the floppy- A drive I tried to COPY over to the C drive but the drive was not recognized.
What do the ERRORS mean and how can I resolve the problem?
Is this a CMOS issue?
Any help would be greatly apprecaited.
ThanksThe drive may be shot...a At the A: prompt type C: and hit Enter...what does it show ? ?
If C: then type dir /p and hit Enter...this will tell you the contents of the hard drive. There are two major possible things I can think of at this moment:
First thing, On the older computers, you had to set up hard drives manually in the CMOS. Though sometimes they had an automatic setup, this wasnt really that common. Now, even if you set it, your going to loose it since your CMOS battery is probably dead. Dont unplug the laptop.
The second thing is that often older 2.5" hard drives would fail relatively quickly. Its just old technology, and the mechanical actions of the drive wore out.
