Solve : Help with problem?

Answer»

There is a site that has old radio shows, but they are .ram and require real player. I want to use winamp because it is most compatible with my ipod. I can't find any PROGRAM (free) that lets me convert the ram files to mp3 or something. Any help would be appreciated. I run xp with firefox. Thanks.http://www.tutorialsroom.com/tutorials/av/convert_ram_to_mp3.htmlThanks for the response. I downloaded Super which seems to be a great program. I put the ram in there and set it for mp3. It said the file was invalid. Thanks anyway. Quote from: ron2 on February 20, 2011, 04:35:37 AM

Sometimes the links on that type of site don't LEAD directly to the ram file itself, but to some kind of script so that you can play it in a browser. If you right click the LINK you can do "save as" but what you get is not a .ram file. Maybe if you gave me a link?

This is the link and maybe you can help.OK I did a bit of checking and I think I've got it clear. A ram file is not an Real Player audio file. (That's a .RA file) It is a text file. When a browser receives this file, it launches Real Player as a helper application. Then the web site "streams" the audio data to Real Player which decodes it and plays it through your computer sound card and speakers. So you can't get an mp3 because they have copyright.
I was afraid it might be something like that. I guess the guy doesn't know if the shows are public domain so he doesn't want you to download them. I really appreciate your help. Quote from: ron2 on February 20, 2011, 05:10:52 AM

You can use the free VLC media Player to convert ram audio to mp3.

If it is public domain!!!!!!!!! I hope I made that quite clear. Because we would not want you breaching copyright. I did make that clear, didn't I?

1. Open the ram file in a text editor such as Notepad.
2. look for an embedded string starting rtsp:// and ending .rm

example rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm - An interesting show.rm?title="Real Interesting"&author="Salmon Trout"&copyright="Fish Locomotive"

Cut out the bit starting rtsp and ending .rm

In this example

rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm - An interesting show.rm

Now replace EVERY space with %20

rtsp://www.blablah.net/28.8/aopm%20-%20An%20interesting%20show.rm

Copy this to your clipboard

Now start VLC Media Player and select "Media" -> "Convert/Save" -> "Network"

Where it says "Please insert a network URL", in that box paste in the string you copied

At the bottom of the window choose "Convert/save" dropdown, choose "Convert"

Now in "Profile" dropdown choose "mp3"

Supply "Destination File" details and click "Start" & wait the same time as the length of the show.

This is just an outline for you to fool around with. There are loads of resources on the web about capturing audio streams

Thanks . I'll play around with your suggestion. One thing I just remembered. Awhile back I remember saving the file and using my media player to get it and there was an option to save target as, and it converted to mp3. Have since reformatted and now my media player doesn't give me that option. It doesn't recognize the file. Strange.
