Solve : Which Anti-virus do you use ?? |
Answer» Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 15, 2009, 02:01:41 AM I would have to agree that Norton 2009 is indeed a very good Antivirus, one of the top AV products out there. Norton wasn't a bad product when you're talking about the product doing its job of protecting the pc from VIRUSES. It's just that Norton was using up way too much memory and thus causing havoc, but seems like Symantec's been addressing people's complaints. It's like AVG isn't really a bad product for virus protection, but it's the fact that it comes with all the other stuff that MAKES it not as desired for many people. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on May 15, 2009, 02:01:41 AM I would have to agree that Norton 2009 is indeed a very good Antivirus, one of the top AV products out there. is indeed Norton GETTING better? Norton was hijackware last i was informed. It hijacked the resources so it's a resource gobbler. But it does it's job of antiviral protection though ....the main thing Norton draws from is peoples wallets. Quote from: BC_Programmer on May 27, 2009, 10:43:35 PM the main thing Norton draws from is peoples wallets.too true I’ve tested nod32 and it caught everything, and so did AVIRA antivir. But I kind of like avira’s look and feel better. So I would go for avira. Quote from: cat-bomb on May 28, 2009, 03:59:32 PM I’ve tested nod32 and it caught everything, and so did avira antivir. But I kind of like avira’s look and feel better. So I would go for avira. it's all up to you. The best antivirus is your own brain. If you have an antivirus, no matter how good it is at this point, if you still let the crapware get through, you're computer is still toast.Yeah i'd stick with Avira AntiVir for sure.I actually used to use: Woolworths Internet Security It cost me £5 a year and was constantly updated , it had a game mode and it wasnt at all gutsy in the processor department! BUT YOU CAN'T GET IT FROM WOOLIES FOR £5 NOW so... I am sad lol anyway , you might still be able to get it from its producers though maybe not for £5 lol The software was made by panda http://www.pandasoftware.co.uk I'm sure there is a global / us site too! |

Answer» I was useing the hub as the MJ DEVICE took up too much room on the back of the computer and over-lapped the other PORTS that I use for the printer and camera. However, now that I reloaded the USB controllers, I can now use the other ports on the front of the tower that were previously inoperable. I was useing the hub as the MJ device took up too much room on the back of the computer and over-lapped the other ports that I use for the printer and camera.A USB2.0 Extension CABLE could come in very handy; it could be a way of AVOIDING use of the hub for your MJ. Solve : help burning cds? |
Answer» i am trying to burn a cd. i out the cd in with no problem. then it tells me my playlist that im burning is too long to fit onto one cd and i have to split it on to mulitiple ONES, i hit ok. then when it says "please insert a new blank cd" the cd drive wont open so i have to shut down my computer and restart it to get the cd out. when i go to play that cd...it is all messed up!...KNOW whats WRONG?Not sure if we are allowed to but here goes, you NEED to use DVD and not CD. Quote from: ari1 on July 01, 2009, 12:06:02 PM i am trying to burn a cd. i out the cd in with no problem. then it tells me my playlist that im burning is too long to fit onto one cd and i have to split it on to mulitiple ones, i hit ok. then when it says "please insert a new blank cd" the cd drive wont open so i have to shut down my computer and restart it to get the cd out. when i go to play that cd...it is all messed up!...know whats wrong? Try making the playlist shorter by deselecting some of the songs that are in it. Or like irish says, use a DVD, they hold a lot more music.and also I am wondering, ari1, what software are you using to burn the CD? Also might as well keep a CD-RW handy so that you can test that your burning works fine and then all you'd need to do is to copy the cd-rw to the cd-r (which would definitely help reduce the number of coasters / wasted CD-R's that you burn) But I think that although you can use the DVD to store more files / burn a longer playlist, be sure that your car, stero player or whatever cd player you want to play it in will be able to playback the dvd stuff if you go that route.... |

Solve : HDD Opinions / suggestions? |
Answer» Quote from: Quantos on July 01, 2009, 11:13:14 PM
Maybe its late or I'm tried or just slow lol But WHAT? Here's whats in my head. I want to down load my DVD collection to the HD and be able to play them from my HD to a TV when I want to watch them. It saves me mucho space. And what I was asking on the question above is why the price differences on what all seem to be the same, except color, 500g HD. Sorry, I didn't explain that very well. You have higher transfer rates on the built in HDD. Copy the movie that you want to watch to your laptop from the external, watch it, then delete it from your laptop. That leaves the master file on the external, which saves space on your laptop, but the external drive isn't running 100% of the time, and you don't suffer any of the buffer lag.Now its my turn Sorry I didn't explain myself and what I am hoping to accomplish very well either. Remember the old juke boxes or the way you can view records in Itunes.... Thats what I'm trying to accomplish with this external HD. I want the entire collection in on eplace and avail at the touch of a button. I would have to connect the Exteral HDD to my laptop and the laptop to my TV, I know, but from that point on just a scroll throiught the titles then a click of a button and..........................MOVIE STARTS PLAYING.The buffering can be a PITA if you have to much extranious stuff running, but if you like it LEAN and mean then it should be fine.Cool we're on the same page now. I use my computer to pay bills, scan important documents, hang on some music forums and here and play full tilt poker. Other then that......... Just recently got into the music Ipod thingy and figured I'd venture into the video storage primarily to save the footprint in my room. lol Other then that its a paper weight. lol Thanks for all the help, MP.What are the major differences with these besides color and the wide gap in pricing? What am I missing here. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148385 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148404 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148354 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148345 AND "IF" i'm understanding correctly the faster the RPM the better it is? Then why are the more expensive ones only 5400 and the cheaper ones 7200? Yes, the higher the rpm's the better. The 5400rpm drives you're looking are 2.5" drives, they are smaller and COST more. Save some money and get a 3.5" 7200rpm drive. |

The winner get's Broni's gift certificate I think Broni won't mindSure thing. If I finally will get them from compruler I will run 10k just to see that. Bad knee or not.I'll buy a shirt to help support the cause...We need to design it first.Hospital appointment on Tue. It took long enough! Going to the Withington COMMUNITY centre hospital to get the knee sorted and now it is my back as well. Check it out on GOOGLE earth Nell Lane, Manchester M20 2LG. Seeing the Orthopaedic clinic. Make's me sound lame.Wow... sounds exciting! You never know what you might see there! Well, I mean, I suppose you can be fairly certain that there's an orthopedist... but really, everything else is a mystery! Will there be a baby who cries in the waiting room and makes you grind your teeth? Will all the magazines have 24 page articles about Michael Jackson? It's an ADVENTURE! they could make a game out of it: "Mulreay goes to the orthopedist" hmm, interesting. I mispelled the name as "Micheal". This might not be too surprising, until you know it's MY first name as well.Plus, when you're done, you can ask the doctor a variation of the very old, but venerable, violin joke..."...but Doc, will, I be able to play the violin?" "Yes." "GOOD -- I've always wanted to..." (Doctor finishes examination) "Doctor, will I be able to do the 'Thriller' dance?" "Yes." Oh, never mind... heh, good one. Yeah that as well. |

Solve : April monthly poll? |
Answer» Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 16, 2009, 09:04:50 AM As an aside, I'm not sure about later versions, but Windows 2K simply can't use hubs daisy chained after a 5th one. (or maybe it was the FIFTH one that didn't work?). Let alone too many wall outlets if you managed to get them all plugged in that too. I know when I start filling up my surge protector, at some point I think- Is this really necessary? do I really need my shaver plugged in all the time, let alone next to my computer? Ok, well, not a shaver, but right now I have my router, monitor, speakers, external HD,USB hub, printer, laptop and cable modem in one. I've been thinking of getting a UPS as well, since our power seems to be unreliable. heh, one time the power flickered off long enough for my PC to stay off, and I spent a good 5 minutes trying to figure out what was wrong with my monitor. Until I saw the clock flashing. DUH! Your powers unreliable too? So is mine! And they wanna rasie the price too!i have 8 usb ports on my home made comp.but only one on my thinkpad, my prenter, camera, headphones, keybord, mouse, and flashdreves, are all usb, there not all hooked up at the sane time but they could be .but i need a 4in1 hub for my thankpad to use more thing 1 thing at a timeI have my external hard drive plugged in. It used to be on firewire but for some reason my computer wouldn't always recognize it then, ESPECIALLY with short periods between turning on and off. The other one of my 5 USB ports is permanently occupied by either a digicam, mp3player or flash drive. Does your flash drive look like the one in your avatar?I think that if you want that you can get them real customized like that. Kind of makes me hungryThe Burger King, or Ronald would like to have that style for their computer needs Hello, I have 2 computers that I have 2 USB devices plugged into all the time, plus my 2 flash drives, depending on which computer I am working on. On computer 1 I have a USB printer and Mouse hooked up. On computer 2 I have a USB mouse and KEYBOARD hooked up. I also had 8 USB ports on this computer until my brother decided I didn't need my front USB ports and broke them for me. You mean for it to look like the fries holder, that would make me crave fries really bad.Umm... Talkin' o' USB... Solve : Need your BI on my BIOS? |
Answer» My computer has been misbehaving so I ran an Everest report and it said that my BIOS may need updating. I then went to Phoenix Tech. Home>Downloads which took me straight to esupport and I had no options but to run BIOS Agent. It said that I needed a BIOS update and ten drivers. When I hit download on one of the lesser drivers I was asked to register before I could go on. Duh on me! Should have thought of safe mode! Will do that but it will have to wait until tomorrow cause Granny is too tired now. Processor, harddrive, memory, etc. Now I am pretty sure that you don't want me to LOOK up all that stuff and type it out. You must know a quick and easy way for me to relay this info. Care to enlighten an old fool?Unless your wanting something new connected to it. I think that its safe that you wont have to flash the BIOS. Complications can arise if your not used to doing it. DO NOT FLASH YOUR BIOS Flashing your BIOS would be a last resort in any case. In Everest: Open it, click Computer, then Summary. In upper menu, go Report>Quick Report-Summary Save it in text file, and paste it in your next post. Don't include anything under LINE Debug - PCI You can relax guys, Granny's not going to flash anything! Ha ha! Shucks, I never get to have any fun! I certainly can't call the last couple of days fun! Let's see if I can make a long story short. I went to safe mode and ran SAS and found a couple of Adware tracking cookies and removed them. Next, I ran Spybot until it was 99% done and my computer became unstable and shut down. More than two hours of scanning for nothing but it had found RXToolbar early on so after the computer had rested for an hour I ran it again hoping to stop it as soon as it found RX and deal with it but the stop button didn't work. ("Thread error: The parameter is incorrect (87)" if that means anything to you.) So then I ran Avast and it found ezStub.exe, I dealt with it and continued until I got an Exception OE in VxD- - - and it shut down. With rest periods between I tried each of the scans again but nothing would run to completion so I gave up. That's when I found out I was stuck in safe mode. I tried every option in Msconfig and F8 at startup but couldn't get back to normal. It was driving me crazy! ( I have been told that it's not so much a long drive but more of a short putt.) After much pondering I remembered seeing a Boot Safe on SAS. It had "Normal" checked but I checked each of the others and then back to normal and restarted. Lo and behold, I was free at last! Then I uninstalled Spybot and spent over six hours downloading and installing a new copy and the stop button still didn't work! ERRRRRRRR! I have a thousand questions but I suppose I should start with 1- Is it normal for these scans to take two hours to run with nothing else running and so little to scan? 2- How can I get them to run and get rid of RXToolbar? My thank "button?" still doesn't work so...... Carbon Dudeoxide; Thank you for the very clear and concise instructions and may I add for the other newbies who may read this, you might want to remove the username. Here are my specs. Solve : hackintosh setup: making the wifi work ( bcm43xx_enabler.sh )? |
Answer» My friend is converting her Dell Inspiron 1525 into a hackbook pro, starting with this tutorial and trouble shooting or going to other sites when something isn't clear or isn't working. Our latest roadblock is (unfortunately) establishing an internet connection. Since her other computer has tragically died, she doesn't have the internet connection to try and look up a solution -- so it is left to me to try and find the solution to try and walk her through over the phone. We're currently trying to do step 7 from the tutorial. The tutorial lists it as follows: Quote Dell Inspiron 1525 Drivers Another site (located here ) has a different link to drivers to download (though I'm assuming that they are functionally identical, if not the exact same set of files; they are available to download here, if you're curious and you want to compare.) The instructions are similar: Quote Unzip the archive from the previous step and open Terminal in Leopard on the Dell mini. Type in sudo and drag the bcm43xx_enabler.sh icon to the Terminal window. Press the Enter key, type in your admin password on the keyboard and follow the instructions. (For those who don’t like to read - basically press Enter four times and restart). The problem? She USES the drag-and-drop method for the bcm43xx_enabler.sh, placing it into terminal. However, upon pressing enter (and I'm assuming she typed the whole code out first -- IE, sudo blahblahblabitty blah bcm43xx_enabler.sh enter enter enter and so on) she says that it comes up with a message in terminal ESSENTIALLY saying 'yeah, this is a directory'. Which isn't really the same as running it. (Sorry if this makes very little sense; I'm doing my best, and this is a second hand accounting of events). Anyone have some very, very specific directions as to how to execute this step? Clearly we're terminal n00bs who are doing something wrong, but we can't figure out what exactly we're doing. If anyone understands what the guide is asking, and could possibly hand-feed us every little possible baby inbetween step that would be obvious to anyone who knew what on EARTH they were dealing with...? Screencaps aren't even necessary -- just exact instructions on what to do, since clearly we're missing something and trying to run the program incorrectly in Terminal. ....help? Sorry if this is rather longwinded. I hope this isn't too late. I just saw it. Assuming the installer is the correct version there might be just one little slip-up here - you must hit the space bar after you type "sudo" (no quotes) before you drag the bcm43xx_enabler.sh into the Terminal. The instructions came from another source, also without the space indication: Open Applications > Utilities > Terminal. Type in sudo and drag the bcm43xx_enabler.sh icon to the Terminal window. Press the Enter key, type in your admin password on the keyboard and follow the instructions. (If you don’t like to read - press Enter four times and restart). Good luck! |

Solve : What should I upgrade to?? |
Answer» Is this a good computer? Athlon LE 1640 (L) 2.7 GHz (45W), GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 Chipset, 2GB DDR2 RAM, 250 GB SATA 7200 rpm, DVD+/-R/RW 16X 12X +/-DL LS 12X RAM SuperMulti SATA drive , Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit), Upgraded my Video card to a Geforce 9500 GT 1GB. I can upgrade my OS but will that make it any better? If it is a gaming computer, you may want to consider getting another distribution of Windows Vista. Home Basic is the lowest of the lowest in terms of Windows Vista. http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/compare-editions/default.aspx I can tell you now that Windows XP would run like the wind on that computer It depends what you want from the machine and what your budget is. A better processor would be a good start. More RAM is unlikely to make MUCH difference in most tasks, however RAM is very cheap. I don't see any advantages of any other editions of Vista vs. Basic for gaming ... could you fill me in please Carbon? I'm not familiar with Vista so it's probably a stupid question. Quote from: Calum on April 25, 2009, 08:01:13 AM I don't see any advantages of any other editions of Vista vs. Basic for gaming ... could you fill me in please Carbon? I'm not familiar with Vista so it's probably a stupid question.Me neither, but a friend told me that there was some sort of video performance or DirectX update for the other Vista versions. I haven't been able to confirm it. Darn my ignorance towards Vista.....Vista Basic and Vista Home Premium is like Windows XP Home and Windows XP MCE. That's basically it. Well I only what to spend around $150 Maybe $200 I only have 2 slots for the RAM but it can hold 4GB (2GB x 2GB) I bought this computer at BJs for only $350 it is a good computer though... I guess a new processor... but i dont know nothing about them can you show me someone that is compatible with my Motherborde? I would like to buy from Tiger Direct if you can look for me. Thanks, BotsBestFriend Quote from: x2543 on April 26, 2009, 12:15:24 AM Vista Basic and Vista Home Premium is like Windows XP Home and Windows XP MCE. That's basically it. Not true. So should I keep Windows Vista home (32 Bit)? Can you help me find a good processor for $150 to $210 Quote from: patio on April 26, 2009, 09:09:44 AM Not true.Well, in windows basic, you don't have any media center, in windows home premium you do along with the premium microsoft games and the aero interface. But else I'm thinking microsoft hasn't changed anything else past that. There are 8 flavors of Vista and they are all diffferent to some degree...Yes, there's those differences but you really just don't care too much on it as long as life goes on and everything's HAPPY. Ok thanks I will keep This vista but what about the processor I asked for some help on that remember. $150 to $210 I can go over just have to work harder! just wondering, what psu do you have? Wattage, how much amps on 12V Rail? Umm Cant really get on it right now but its a AMD, 2.7 GHz processor that about all i know of unless you tell me were i can see the volts or what not... Thanks for your help guys and girls, BotsBestFriend |
