Solve : Need help getting music off of old computer,PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

Answer»

I have a 1998 HP Pavilion that I recently quit USING and bought a 2008 Dell Inspiron. On the old HP I have about 10 thousand songs on it, and before I give it to Good Will I want to get these songs off of it. I just don't KNOW how to do it. So my question is : how do I get these music files off of this old computer? I don't know if I COULD use a memory stick, and also the burner in the old computer does not work, so thats also out of the question. I am not very good with computers, so please when responding please don't confuse me with computer talk that I won't understand. Thanks for your help and time.-ScottedoggDoes the old computer still work?

Do you have a ROUTER?the old computer still runs,i do not have a router, any other ways? What operating system is the old computer running? Windows 98?

yes,the old one is windows 98,my new computer is vistaAre these laptops or desktops?both desktopsWell, the best way to get the stuff off of that old computer, would be to take the hard drive out, and place it into your new computer. Then you can just get all the files and move them onto your new hard drive.

How familiar are you with the components of a personal computer?

Have a look at this
http://www.dtidata.com/resourcecenter/2007/04/23/how-to-slave-hard-drive/thanksWait!
I'm sorry I think I may have just given you some bad advice

If you new computer is still under warranty, opening the case will probably void the warranty.

The best way to get your music to your new computer, would be to share the files over a network.

Do you know anyone that has a router?I've used a memory stick without problems....or transfer them to an external HD and then transfer them to the new machine...you'll always find a use for the external HD. Quote from: Karnac on April 27, 2009, 11:22:12 AM

I am learning, thanks Macdad.Anytime, but back on topic.

scot,

First do the following on your Win98 machine.

1.Right Click on My Computer and hit "Properties", a dialog box should appear
2.Under where it says "Microsoft Windows 98" look for either "First" or "Second Edition"

Solve : CD-R space usage?

Answer»

I have a CD-R which shows significantly more space USED than I can find in files & directories. This is an Imation 12x 80Min CD-R (700 MB/ 80 MIN).

From Ubuntu Linux desktop, properties show:
    645 items totaling 211.7 MB
    283.6 MB used
    isofs

From the Linux commandline:
df shows 290,418k blocks available and used
du shows 212M; adding up the subdirectory sizes gets 217

From Win Vista desktop, the CD properties show:
    302 MB used
    347 MB free
    649 MB capacity

The CD contains a single DIRECTORY/folder with one later of sub-directories/-folders. Win Vista Properties on that top directory shows:
    622 files 22 folders
    211 MB size
    212 MB size on disk

The CD was "burned" on a PC and drive I no longer have.

I wrote "04/1999 - 01/2001" on the disk, but the contents are only from mid-2000 on. Unfortunately, the missing piece is pictures from just before my daughter's birth thru her first birthday. My wife recently was putting together electronic albums from all of the CDs and discovered this "gap".

The amount of "missing" data (~60 MB BASED on the Linux results; ~80 if you believe Windows instead) LEADS me to wonder if I've lost a session. Assuming the 20M initial session overhead is already accounted for in the 700 MB, the 13 MB for a second session could still result in >40 MB of potential pictures.

I have had no luck identifying any means of digging into the disk and am hoping that someone will be able to point me to more information, if not a solution.

Thanks!USE ISOBuster and extract all the data to a HDD directory and see if the missing files are there...it could be an unfinished session...
There is a FREE version but you have to hunt for it.,

Solve : Sun, Java, Microsoft, Back to the Future.?

Answer»

Sun, Java, Microsoft.  Back to the Future?

This post is here, because the is no other place came to mind.

Can you answer these questions:.
Now the Sun is down, with Java live?
Will Microsoft kill it again?
Once it was SAID Java as to be The Future.
Could that be still true, if it ever was?
So, will computer APPLICATIONS go back to the Future?
What happened to Borland? Delphi?

Please provide your insights.
Much as I dont familiarize myself with programming as much as I should:
If I was assigned a task to make a program that needed to be able to run on all the major platforms (Windows, MACOS 10, Linux/Unix, BSD, whatever) but that needed to be compiled all in one (so, no SEPARATE compilations for each platform), I would go with Java.

Much as most of us cringe when we see "Java Required" (SINCE, it is a pain to get running sometimes), its great cross-platform programming.
I love how you can make a program in Java, and it can be run in so many ways... on any OS that has Java, in the browser, off the desktop, with or without the operating systems GUI API...

Of course, at the moment, Java is evil. I hope "they" improve upon it and make it better. Specifically a faster, smaller installer, and less resource intensive.

Solve : Youtube Channel?

Answer»

I created my own channel on youtube and had a question:

I see that on a lot of other people's pages, the  toolbar that has these buttons are only on the top - "Home  Subscriptions  Videos  Shows  Channels"
I'm not really sure how to explain it - but i want to know how to get rid of it.

For example my pages looks like CBS's - http://www.youtube.com/user/CBS but i want it to look like fox's page http://www.youtube.com/user/foxbroadcasting?blend=1&ob=4

Can anyone help me?

Thanks!

(If its unclear what im asking - please say so)
It's not unclear, I understand what you mean.

Do you own a multi-million dollar business, by any chance?no, let me guess  - only if you do, then you can make it like that?Yup.

Well, maybe not multi-million, but you'll need to be somewhat a VIP. I'm sure you could email Google about getting it removed, but I'd say you'll have to pay for it. FOX aren't getting that page for nothing.

It you used CSS or a script to remove it you'd more than likely be banned from the site.but ive seen a lot like these, even like this one you'd have to pay?

http://www.youtube.com/user/futurestartsnowNo, maybe not. Now that I think of it, some users (who registered before YouTube changed the site completely a few years ago) have the option to change the layout of their pages, as well as being able to add a background image.I'm able to add a background picture, do you think I can do the other thing as well?
you can add background image

GO to www.youtube.com, log into your own account, then CLICK on the account link on right top corner of page.

Then in the overview page, you click on edit channel , then channel DESIGNS and then you can edit your page like you want it, and that includes uploading an image so it will become your new channel wallpaper/background)

and maybe you can make your page look like Fox's page or whatever from that control panel.no luck but thanks for all your help!I think I FOUND out how....

Go to your YouTube profile, and click the "Revert! I want my old channel back" button. There, the menu will be gone.Yes! Thanks! but I cant figure out how to make it that it doesnt show: "Last Sign In:" and "Videos Watched:"i think those are default, as in non removable. ok and the font size is also default?

Solve : Time to change my ISP?

Answer»

So..

after reading this..

http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/mar2009/tc20090331_726397.htm

I have decided its time to change my ISP. I live in Rochester NY and was wondering if anyone knows of any affordable isp's that have speeds comparable to time warner...my ISP does something similar... all the ISP's here do it... its really quite annoying.

Find out one thing before you switch: Will the price change? Do you use enough of the bandwidth that it will cost you more?

Still, I personally would retaliate and move away from their company... theres little to no reason to monitor bandwidth.

My ISP only allows 25GB a month... I sometimes go over that. I dont do illegal torrents, but, I download a lot of PROGRAMS and Linux updates, not to mention, my SERVER that currently makes me absolutely no MONEY.
(I am going to stick ads on it soon though... might as well try)
Travel to DSL Reports website...they list them by area code including those that MAY not advertise in your area but provide service...
Good Luck. The greed of these companies.... I Don't what the speed is
but I can download the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in less than 2 min's

Solve : What is a bluetooth stack?

Answer»

OK , I will try and keep this simple guys

I installed a bluetooth adapter plus the software, which is "WIDCOMM BLUETOOTH SOFTWARE"  now is this refered to as a bluetooth sack.

With the software installed,  i can view everything whats on the DEVICE (ie) mobile phone in a "operations and settings" window

Now i have uninstalled the software, and i am just using the adapter driver , so am i using any kind of "bluetooth stack.

This is on windows vista

This has been confusing me for daysDon't know.
Have you ALREADY read this:

Does anyone think that will change?

I've already seen them and still don't get it  "in laymans terms" please , you try reading them, if you are new to this subject it hard to figure out what your actually reading
I thought someone might explain it "in an understandable way"Ok imagine you have some protocols or 'rules' or to be clear, a set of calling rules which is used by computers to communicate with each other across a network. Hence bluetooth.
A stack is when you have multiple protocols and they are 'stacked' together.
This 'stack' enables and controls the network. Not sure exactly what it is you want to know but I'm willing to help if you can be more specific. Quote from: Mulreay on November 15, 2009, 07:35:45 AM

OK Mulreay

I 've got a better idea now  "protocols"  (ie)  "FTP"  "OBEX"   etc

So my software " WIDCOMM BLUETOOTH SOFTWARE"   is the bluetooth stack

So if i uninstall this software, which i might because i don't use all these "protocols" or features and just use the adapter driver.
I take it this will be with limited protocols and features..

Am i getting there slowleyBut if the 'adapter' is a bluetooth adapter, then it will no longer be a bluetooth adapter as it will have no CONNECTION protocols.
What is the end result you are searching for as I'm lost. If you remove the network protocols from a bluetooth device it is no longer a device able to connect to anything so it will be a nothing.

I protocol networks there for I am! Just a twist on the old 'I think therefore I am'. Quote from: Mulreay on November 15, 2009, 08:10:25 AM

Sorry not searching for anything in particular, just a bit of information on how it works
I have just uninstalled the software, so i do not have a "bluetooth operations and settings" window, which was what i got using the software..

I am just using the bluetooth adapter, to transfer some music files and pictures to the computer the  (device) is a Mobile phone
And from the computer to the phone.

What i have in device manager is the bluetooth enumerator thats all, everything is working fine....
What i don't understand is, am i using some sort of bluetooth stack, to transfer files to and from the phone, or is it the bluetooth adapter doing this or windows
As the only thing installed is the adapter not the software

Sorry if this sounds confusing

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth_stackI'm not sure how many different ways I can explain this?? Let me have one more punt.
The 'STACK' is just the protocols to allow you to network. The 'ADAPTER' is the hardware which has the 'PROTOCOLS' included. WINDOWS has nothing to do with it.
It's probably me just explaining it wrong...1. In computing, a protocol is a set of calling rules which is used by computers to communicate with each other across a network.

2. A protocol "suite" is the set of protocols which enable a particular type of communication. For example there is a "TCP/IP" suite to enable communication over LANs, the Internet etc.

3. A protocol "stack" (sometimes communications stack) is a particular software implementation of a computer networking protocol suite. The terms are often used interchangeably. Strictly speaking, the suite is the definition of the protocols, and the stack is the software implementation of them.

4. The word "stack" is used because of the organisation of the suite, which can be thought of as having "layers" like a stack of pancakes. At the top is the "application" layer which gives and takes data to & from applications. Next there are various layers which lead to the bottom most layer where packets are dealt with via software driver to the hardware.

5. An operating system may have a stack installed already or it may need to be added.

So my software " WIDCOMM BLUETOOTH SOFTWARE"   is the bluetooth stack

Thanks salmon trout, thats a pritty good explanation of it all, before you posted i have been going over what Mulreay posted, but your post finally brought it all togeather
And i am beginning to make sence of it all..

So just plugging the adapter in, and not using the software, will just provide me with some basic services.
And the software provides a particular software implementation of a computer networking protocol suite

I have used the software , and i know what it entails, its pritty good and you can do alot of things with this.
But at the moment, for what i use it for i have uninstalled the software and i am just using the adapter with the basic services..(ie) sending music, photos to and from the computer.

I will CARRY on learning a bit about bluetooth, as i did not know you can do all these things with the software or stack...

Thankyou again for explaining it to me salmon trout...........

For some reason it GIVES the option of jumping from 2.4ghz up to 3.12ghz? which i thought was pushing it....
but its in the green SECTION?

Here take a look at this SCREENSHOT...

Now *censored*? thats a little much dont you think? and its green?
It gives you the option to manually change it... now what should i look at changing to get around 2.8GHZ

ThanksDon't use Easytune or any other software tools to overclock.
Do it in the BIOS, after you know what every setting is and how to recover from any issues you encounter.

Solve : Sort Function Help Please?

SOME TIME AGO A MICROSOFT SUPPORT TEAM MEMBER ADDRESSED SEVERAL PROBLEMS THAT I HAD AND ONE OF THEM HE TOLD ME HOW TO CORRECT.  HOWEVER, IT DID NOT WORK AND I AM WONDERING IF MAYBE SOMEONE NOW HAS A SOLUTION TO THIS PROBLEM.

I WORK A GREAT DEAL WITH EMBROIDERY PATTERNS AND I AM AWARE THAT THE “SORT” DEFAULT IS   “NAME” DATE  ETC.   I AM SURE MANY PEOPLE ARE HAPPY WITH THAT HOWEVER WITH THE EMBROIDER DESIGNS  I REALLY WOULD LIKE THE DEFAULT TO BE    NAME    DATE       TYPE.    TYPE BEING THE MOST IMPORTANT ONE. I WISH THE SORTING OF MY DESIGNS DEFAULT WOULD ALWAYS BE THAT.  IF I DESIRED SOMETHING ELSE I COULD ALWAYS CHANGE IT ON A TEMPORARY BASIS.  CAN YOU HELP ME DO THAT.
I WAS TOLD THE FOLLOWING:
OPEN FOLDER
CLICK VIEW TAB
SELECT TYPE
ARRANGE SORT LIST
CLICK ORGANIZE
SLECT FOLDER AND SEAARCH
CLICK VIEW
CLICK APPLY
CLICK YES
CLICK OK
THIS DOES WORK FOR ONE OR TWO TIMES BUT THEN REVERTS TO THE STANDARD DEFAULT.
CAN YOU HELP ME PLEASE.  THANK YOU jjjoan

Welcome to the CH forums.

Please turn OFF your capslock.

1.   Open the folder.
2.   Click View>Details.
3.   Right click Type.
4.   Click More.
5.   Set your preferences by hightlighting what you want then use the Move Up or Move Down feature to set them in the sequence you want.
6.   Click OK.

The colums/headers should now be in your desired sequence and should remain like that.Sorry about the Cap Lock.  I didn't even REALIZE that it was on.  I did try what you suggested but sorry to say it also only works the first few times. If I leave the folder and open another program the next time I go into the embroidery folder and try to sort it by type - type is not there it has reverted to the original default list.  Any other suggestions.  Also, thank you for trying I really appreciate it.  Well I dunno, I've tested this on Windows 2k, XP Home and XP Pro and cannot get the settings to change even after reboots.  Which Operating System are you using?

I've attached some pics for you to have a look at.

Pic-1 shows the folder open and View clicked on.  Details is bulleted as is Type in Arrange icons by.  FILES are shown arranged by Type with Type in Col-1, Name in Col-2 and Date Created in Col-3.

Pic-2 shows the screen after R.Click on any column header.  The drop-down shows which columns will be displayed.  More is at the bottom of the drop-down.

Pic-3 shows the screen after clicking More.  The checked boxes show the sequence of columns L to R.

Pic-4 shows the screen after R.Click on any column header and changing the column sequence to show the Name in the LH column.  Note: files are still sorted by Type.

Can you post some IMAGES to show what results you get?

Solve : Troubles on forums (log-ins and -outs, posting)?

Answer»

Hello folks  ,

greetings from Germany.

"Forumming" takes up a substantial amount of my online time.

For a few months now i'm having minor but yet IRRITATING troubles on different FORUMS:

can't log in, can't log out, can't post, although i'm listed as logged-in, or i cannot see my posts, only after a certain time...

I've deleted cookies, i've also checked in "internet options", and the session cookie BOX is checked as it's supposed to be...could it have something to do with the firewall settings?

I do know that after 2 years on this COMPUTER, i should reinstall everything but i shy away from that right now, as this is still above me, but i will do this eventually, but only with the help of a friend or a technician.

So, any suggestions, what my forum troubles could come from?

Edit:
Here everything worked like clockwork, registering, posting...
Clear your cache?wow, fast reply thanks

ÄÄÄhhhhh, I've heard of cache, it's a sort of MEMORY  ,
how do i go about clearing it?In FireFox it's Tools/Options/Security/Network/Clear cache now...
I don't touch IE...

Solve : blurry print?

Answer»

i got a new high resolution Samsung monitor & installed it with proper driver on my dell 4550.  print was not sharp.  support staff said it was because my 7 yr-old computer couldn't handle the new technology.  i reinstalled my older, smaller samsung 205bw (which had worked fine before) with proper driver & am STILL having the same PROBLEM.  have tried different resolutions & different fonts, but problem remains.  Samsung says problem is in my computer, but i've done nothing but change the monitors.  any suggestions?Have you tried enabling ClearType text?

There is a good FAQ on it here.thank you. yes, tried clear type- doesn't seem to make a difference.  also tried to restore point several dates before i got the new monitor & it won't restore.Hello,
Ffrom reading your post, it APPEARS that you have a new problem was an old computer. You indicate that both the new monitor and the old monitor do not show a clear letters on the screen. But at some earlier time the old monitor works fine. This would lead to the conclusion that something has happened to your video card. Does this computer has a built-in video? Or does it have uploaded in video graphics card?
Also, this occurs with an old cable that has become damaged or does not make good CONNECTION to the monitor. However, I THINK the new monitor has its own cable. Is that true?

Mgs, I just realized something.  Are you running the display in it's NATIVE resolution?  Many LCD displays are a bit fuzzy unless they are displaying at the resolution they are meant to.  Unfortunately your older video card may not support that resolution, that would mean finding a video card that supports that resolution.

LATE enough to not tell anyone...... Thanks!I have some domains that are going to expire. You can have one free.
ike free. But you can not have your pick. It does not work that way. I already paid for it, COULD not get around to doing anything with it, could not make it money with it, have too many other things I do. So I am just going to let some go back into the dark SEEP depth of cyberspace..
I can't give you the names here, I think that might not bee a good idea. But if you want to send me a PM I will give you a list of domains I have that will soon expire. Why didn't you ask me last year? I have over a hundred I let expire!
But did you Google for free domains? I recall that at one time Belgium, I think, was giving free domains.Okay.........

The fact of the matter is that you're not actually going to get a free domain, anywhere. What's more is that you'll then have to go and register the domain, which definitely is not free.kpac is right, you're going to have to dig into your piggy bank and use some of those pennies you've been saving since you were three years old.

How about .info domain instead of .com?  Domain registrar godaddy.com has a sale on .info domains now.  You can get one for one year of $0.99.  That offer is shown here: https://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/tlds/info.asp?tld=info&ci=13085

Their price on .com domains is currently about $10/yr.  And, I think you're going to have use a credit card, regardless of the amount. If you don't have one, ask your parents if you can use one of their accounts for this.

Or, talk to Geek-9pm about his offer, but you may not be satisfied with being limited to a previously choosen domain name.

Solve : Getting my computer to recpgnize this DVD.?

Answer»

I have this DVD with ALL my downloaded games on it.
Suddenly one day my computer would not recognize it.
I tried it on all 3 of my computers (2 x XP, 1 x Vista) and a friends computer (Vista).
I go to "My Computer" and double click the DVD drive that the disc is in. A window opens but it is blank SHOWING no files. This is the same on all computers.

However I do have 1 Toshiba DVD player with a file browser feature. And this DVD player will display all my folders and games. So the data isn't ERASED, but just won't show up on my computer(s).

What can i do to recover my games?
Any help? DLoad and install the Free trial of ISOBuster...
Use it to extract the data BACK to the HDD...
Check the datas integrity.
If all is good re-burn it to DVD,No, ISO buster says Blank DVD. However i KNOW it is not blank.

Any other suggestions? ISOBuster finds data on DVD's that have not been finalised...
If ISOBuster finds no files i would venture to guess there are indeed no files.Have you tried it in another computer or DVD drive?

Could be your DVD drive is faulty.I've tried 4 computers (2Vista, 2XP), and 6 DVD drives.

But the one DVD player did read the files. There are two programs that I know of that might help you.

One is Roadkil's Unstoppable Copy which will read off your DVD and try to recover data, you can read about and download it here: http://majorgeeks.com/Unstoppable_Copier_d2623.html

The other is Recuva, which can be found here: http://majorgeeks.com/Recuva_d5514.html

Both have worked for me before so I hope it works for you.http://www.tech-pro.net/cd-dvd-recovery.html

This is a paid software, but there is the try before you buy so another test to see if your disk actually has good data on it that has any remote possibility of being recovered.

Solve : What is "Burn a CD"??

Answer»

I am planning to purchase a laptop. I understand that not all laptops can "Burn CDs". What exactly does this mean? Does it mean there is no CD/DVD slot on the side in which to place CDs/DVDs? What exactly gets "BURNED onto the CDs"?  When I download photos from my camera into the laptop, are they stored in the HD or onto the CD? It is confusing.  Also, if I desire to add memory to a laptop, is there a way to connect an external HD at a later date?First, let's get a few terms straight here, to avoid further confusion

a PC/laptop has, (basically) two kinds of "memory", first is the RAM. For example, my MACHINE has 1GB of RAM installed. the other is Disk space, which allows you to save things, and load them later. For example, you save word documents to disk- windows is installed on the disk, etc.

With Optical Drives (CD/DVD drives) there are drives that can read, but not write, to the disks, (DVD-ROM and CD-ROM) and there are drives that can read/write, but not "overwrite" (that is, erase the data already there) drives, these are called DVD-R and CD-R drives, and there are disks called CD-R and DVD+R and -R that cannot be rewritten.

However, most Optical drives today are CD-RW DVD-RW drives, which can read CD-ROM and DVD-ROM discs, write to CD-R and DVD-R/+R discs, and read, write, and erase the contents of CD-RW and DVD-RW media. CD-R and DVD-R mean "recordable" and the RW means "rewritable".

When you copy photos from your camera, they are stored on your hard disk. If you want them on a Disc, you will need to "burn" a CD/DVD containing them. (it's called burning because the drive laser LITERALLY "burns" markings into the disc, by heating the surface up to around 250°–300°C). Then you can give the discs to your FRIENDS or relatives, or store them in a safe place for backup.

Adding memory to a laptop is relatively straightforward; however be sure to find out how much RAM it has compared to how much it can have. As a example, my laptop which I bought relatively recently came equipped with 4GB of RAM. However, this is the maximum amount it SUPPORTS, so I cannot upgrade past this amount. Other laptops can hold more, and/or come with less RAM, and you can often add memory later on.

In most recent laptops you can add memory pretty easily, it's usually detailed in the instruction manual. In general it means unscrewing one or two screws on the bottom of the laptop and opening a "door" too the RAM slots. Then you plop in the new memory and close it up.

You can also upgrade the disk capacity from what is included; most laptops use fairly standard HDs and you can replace them with higher capacity drives. You can also, as you said, get an external Hard disk and store your data that way. Quote from: Myron on July 28, 2009, 08:45:48 AM

I am planning to purchase a laptop. I understand that not all laptops can "Burn CDs".
I'm curious about where you've seen a new laptop that does not have a CD or DVD burner.  Practically all new laptops, even at the  low-end of the price spectrum, have a CD/DVD drive with burning, i.e. recording, capability.

Quote from: Myron on July 28, 2009, 08:45:48 AM

You choose what gets burned onto CDs, via whatever software you use for this purpose.  When you initially download photos to your computer, they get saved to your hard drive.  If you want to burn, i.e. record, them to a CD or DVD, you need to do that as a seperate procedure. If it can burn CDs - You can make your own CDs in it. Some will also let you make DVDs.

I don't see why some laptops you are looking at can't - Almost all modern laptops can.

Cameron GrayI have yet to find a NEW laptop that will not allow for the writing of information to either CD or DVD formats.

If you post the make and model in question we can help you find the information to answer your questions.

Solve : Basic Command For C64 Disk?

Answer» WORKS with other floppies fine.I dont know could I do a verify?  That would just prove what ever is on there wont it?  if I knew the name of what it was.Probably, Do you have JiffyDOS? You could try that.As mention before know, I have basic or pet basic as what I think it ended up as and geos to which I can boot tooo....I think i found how to boot to GEOS:http://cbmfiles.com/geos/index.html   I know how....  its load"*",8,1 then it loads.  I want to see the names of PROGRAMS that it cant open, not the code.Ok, i read that the C64 has no sort of Directory command, the closest thing to it was LOAD "$",8,1

But it says on Wikipedia that that command just shows random garbage.

So basically in C64 Basic, you can't see the entire directory of the drive, unless you use another OS like GEOS or JiffyDos.

Articlei dont want to see the directory, i want to know the name of the program.  I'm well aware of what load"$",8 does.  It just loads it shouldnt display anything.  When you save a program you have the chance to name the DISK know way around it that I know.  The question is what it is.  E.x. I have a game called mumpets ADVENTURE or something and I have to do a load"ma",8,1 ; notice the "" its indicating the program and saing to run that as expected.RUNThat didnt work ether.

Pirrilo lost his edge awhile ago... Quote from: CrewRite on November 10, 2009, 05:45:37 PM

Which ever Distro becomes king, I think the only way for any one of them to become a real boom in the market is to create a universal system that understands how to *automatically* install things and put it in a controlled environment.  Controlled meaning that you can build on the OS, but don't make folks and at the same time make sure software (such as OpenOffice) is auto-install compatible, without the need of Sudo.  Although I guess Auto-Sudo would be a good idea.

Windows is a extreme case of software environment control, since they don't really listen to experts LIKE Chris Pirillo.

Just take the complications out a OS and you got something.  Don't care if Micro has been around for years, their getting terrible.
Agreed, Installing programs on Ubuntu (it's what I use) can be tricky business. Last time I ended up with at least several BROKEN dependencies. And yes M$ is getting worse all time. Many people are now TURNING to Apple.

Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 10, 2009, 05:27:33 PM
However, I don't think apple will make a "dent" of any sort if they continue with their higher prices, and not allowing the OS to run on any other system but a apple branded one.

I don't think this will make too much of a difference for Apple. Some experts say it will actually help them beat M$. People love Mac computers, and Macs are the "in-style" just like ipods. Macs today are basically the same as PCs in hardware. Because of this the Mac OS X will work perfectly on a PC as long as you select compatible hardware before you build your rig. Many people rave how much Linux, BSD and Unix are much more stable than Windows. What most people don't know though is that the Mac OS X is a Unix variant (BSD actually). I actually talked to a lady recently who is a Mac user and has been involved in computers since the early 80's and she didn't even know this. Because the OSX is unix-based it has many of the advantages of Unix.

Apple hasn't been doing this good selling their computers since the very early 90's. I think Apple stands a good chance for beating Microsoft, especially if Microsoft doesn't start winning the war again (and Im not talking about those Linux attack ads). MS has been playing catch-up with Apple the past few years, if they want to hold their place they're gonna have to start getting back into the game.If Steve Jobs (Apple) would learn to Love PC's, we would all benefit.

First get RID of Apple Hardware and become a Software Giant, but that will HAPPEN when pigs fly.   Apple hasn't always been Unix, however. I think it was 10-15 years ago.... when steve jobs took over, that they dumped their own kernel for unix. Quote from: michaewlewis on November 12, 2009, 11:02:32 AM

They started Using the Unix kernel in 2001 when they released the OSX. All versions of the Mac OSX are Unix-based. The classic Mac OS (version 9.x and lower) had no connection to Unix.Yeah, that's what they said on Wiki.  They started with MacOS and than for whatever reason moved to Unix hence the 'X' in OSx. so if you know of a site like this then plz tell me before i waste my time and everyones time tooDo you mean something like this?
http://www.processlibrary.com/
It lists the description of a great number of processes (like exe and dll files). As for individual files, it would take a much more massive library that would need a lot of USER input, like a wiki.

http://filext.com/
This site lists file extensions, but not individual files for the most part.
For listing individual files and a brief explanation i don't believe such a site exists because of the sheer volume of files.......so go for it if you like.

cuz i was thinking about including all files PROGRAM system and all
i just thinking it would be a good idea because the sites listed are for different types of files and i want to put them all together.

so wiki style might be a good option instead of a database

Well, a wiki works on a database.....

That doesn't really matter, to be honest. If your site gets big enough, you're talking about profit, not just "covering yourself". i doubt it will get that big but never knowok guys don't laugh but i got a site up a forum and a blog here FileQuest

oh and now i just need to figure out how im going to do the data.. like layout wise.

Solve : Top Computer Issues?

Answer»

Hey All! I'm just back because I have a question -- don't try to get me to stick around forever

For a project I need to accomplish, I am COMPILING a BOOK of BASIC troubleshooting.
Being as I work in education, and plan on continuing to to so, this book is for teachers at my school (rephrase: this book is for people who don't know a thing about computers).

I need to know, what are the top issues that all of you computer experts come up with, that can be solved without opening the computer, or being an administrator?

Eg: Screen Resolution problems, turning on my projector makes my screen go blank, Microsoft WORD keeps displaying an error message...

For those of you who know me, and want to hear about how I am doing:

School got out last month, as most other schools, and my summer has actually been fairly boring. I am going on a missions trip to Thailand and India July 20th through August 7th. I am planning out college, and that has been going smoothly (for the most PART). I plan to attend Wenatchee Valley College (www.wvc.edu) taking their Network Administration program (two-year) leaving me with a degree in Network Administration.
Most of my electives will be music based.
Hopefully, after my college day (6:30AM to 12PM, including Bus Transportation) I may be working for the school district as part-time tech guy (which, is what I did last year anyways... they know my skill and ability to work with the teachers and other staff in the school, which gives me a great advantage)

Life has been going like a well-maintained record -- occasionally, the needle weight isnt set right, and suddenly a huge skip occurs and you have to go back to the beginning again... but its all worthwhile.

I'd say the "top" computer problem is hackers and virus'!!!
Cyberdefender's easy to use program and preventing virus by blocking them before corrupting answered one of those problems for me now hackers are next to be stopped I support a couple of workgroups with some computers and a majority of ThinClients.

On the hardware side. we get a lot of mice and keyboard that stop working.  Once we unplug them and replug them into their USB ports, they are fine.

Sometimes, power cords work loose from the backs of CRT monitors.

Laptops will "die" and replacements will have to be reimaged.  We've had to do that with a few desktops, too.

We had a bout of some trojan virus that went around, and we had to erase profiles.

I didn't do top computer problems for my school, but solutions to common problems and suggestions to improve performance.
Such as changing themes, resolutions, graphic'display settings, power options, user accounts, ect.

I'll have the webpage up in a few weeks.

Solve : Page Cannot Be Displayed-Only In My Home?

Answer»

I pray someone can help me figure out what is going on with my computer. For the last week when I go to my favorite website it gives me "page cannot be displayed". ALL other sites work just fine. So after several days of trying to fix it myself I took it to my computer fix it guy. He hooked it up and bam it worked just fine. So he still took off some bad gliches I had just to be safe. I get home with my computer all excited that it is finally fixed, plug up only my moniter, keyboard, dsl, and mouse-connect,go to the page and there it is AGAIN! After just seeing it work fine on my very machine at the repair shop. So I get in my head it has to be something going on with one of the things I have plugged up. I TAKE my machine over to my Dads, hook it up and just like at the repair shop the SITE popped up just fine. I am livid at this point as you can imagine. So I call dsl support because I am guessing maybe something is going on in my house that is making it connect everywhere but here. He swears that the dsl has nothing to do with it. I have no other machine I use or a wireless router,so those are out. So does anyone have ANY suggestions what on earth is going on that I can go to this site on my own machine everywhere but in my own darn house?!What is the website?livejournal.com it works fine for everyone and even me just so it isn't CONNECTED where I am right now.Have you tried using a different web BROWSER?Yes it won't work on firefox either. I don't think it has anything to with my machine since it worked fine at 2 different places. Only thing that makes sense to me is something that is hooked up to it.

one possibility is you are banned from using livejournal.com

And if you are banned it isnt your username its more likely its your entire network and an i.p range, expecially if you didnt deserve a ban yourself.

I dont have dsl or know how it works, but i think its likely it if isnt a banned i.p range its a misconfiguration in your router settings.I'm not banned I can log in fine when I plug up my system up else where. ALSO a dsl guy came to my home today and even his laptop wouldn't display the page while hooked up to the new dsl box he brought. So we are thinking and hoping it is a problem with the main dsl line in my area.Have contacted your ISP about this?  Do you use a router?  Do you connect to the Internet in your home via cable or wirelessly (a wireless router)? My dsl provider sent a guy over today like I said and even his computer wouldn't even connect in my area to just this one page so they are gonna have to research it tongiht. I just hope they can fix it.Hmm, that's weird.  Please let us know how this turns out after they investigate it.It's VERY weird But they kept wanting to blame it on my computer even though I knew that wasn't it. So when the dsl guys own laptop wouldn't even work here that sealed it. I just hope it is fixable.

Solve : Computer shutting down once a week.. wthell?

Answer»

Well uh, it's not really MY computer but I'm trying to fix my friend's Dell.

It's a laptop, brand is Dell and model is vostro 1320

The problem:

Well as she described it to me, the computer shuts down about once a week and it starts to FLASH at the top of her screen (right CORNER I believe) and they already tried FORMATTING the computer however this did not resolve the issue!

Please, comment with anything you might believe to be the error.1) WHAT starts to flash?
2) Why doesn't she post here? It's easier to work with the first party.1. The screen is in that screen when it's all black, and only a white _ is flashing in the top left.. I can't remember what it's called..
2. She doesn't know about me posting here, I'm just trying to figure out the problem and / or solutionNo offense friend, but if you don't know what a cursor is called then she's better off posting here herself so we can ASK her questions and get answers quickly, and so we can tell her what to do and get responses directly from her when she does it. I understand you want to impress her, but you're only going to END up wasting our time. Again - not trying to be rude to you - just trying to suggest the best and most efficient method of trying to solve her problem.

Solve : Switching from Vista to 98SE?

Have you considered Linux?
Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 14, 2009, 07:04:12 PM
a MUCH better alternative would be a linux distribution
I would recommend you switch to UBUNTU Linux 9.04. It's extremely fast and should work on your laptop. 98 almost for sure wouldn't work on your laptop unless it's over a few years old.

Listen to BC and killerb255, I would say the same thing but I'm too lazy to write it all out. Simpily put Vista is a decent OS, just MOST manufactures fill it to the top with crap. I have a computer with 3 Ghz CPU, 2 GB RAM etc. and it run slow from day 1 due to crap Acer added in.that was the REASON I reformatted my laptop with a clean Vista install. The difference is amazing. Quote from: ThomasTheXPUser on July 15, 2009, 02:22:57 PM
Windows 98SE?!? I know vista is bad, VERY BAD, but you are aware Microsoft stopped any support for 98 3 years and 4 days ago (July 11, 2006) I think you can get a LEGAL copy (of XP) cheaper on the net now it is been replaced by Vista.

No you don't know that.  I run it and for the most part I don't mind it.  I am used to navigating in XP but there are no drivers for my laptop for XP x64.

What you do know is that you don't like it and possibly a few of your friends don't like it either.

DON'T STATE OPINIONS AS FACTS.  Read my sig, carefully, repeat as needed. Quote from: ThomasTheXPUser on July 15, 2009, 02:22:57 PM

That's actually not correct. With MS prices are normally cheapest when the OS first comes out, not later on. XP Pro (home is no longer sold) cost about $100 right now.
Windows 2000 still costs about $85-90 (only 10 bucks cheaper than XP). Quote from: Cityscape on July 26, 2009, 01:20:54 PM

I believe, with many laptops, the recovery partition, or disk created from the recovery partition, will restore all the original software that was on the computer when it was new. So, in all such cases, the reinstall is not going to yield a nice clean system without all the extraneous software that was on the computer when it was new.  So then, it's really up to the user to get rid of, i.e. uninstall, unneeded software.  Still, the time and effort spent doing this can yield noticeably improved performance. when I said "clean vista install" I meant "clean vista install". I deleted ALL partitions, including the recovery partition and reinstalled Vista Ultimate from my DVD.

In my opinion recovery discs and recovery partitions are cruel jokes. the machine should include the ACTUAL windows Disc, and another disc with the drivers & applications... obviously allowing people to opt out of, for example, installing a "FREE NORTON 360 trial!" instead of presenting a modal dialog that won't go away until you either set it up or FORCE it's task to close with task manager. Yes, I had already bought it for this machine I use now, but it wasn't quite fast enough to take Vista, so I went back to XP.

so I used it for the laptop.

I think manufacturers should have to include a "real" windows Disc, rather then "recovery" discs that have preloaded cruft. They used to, ages ago. Oh well.

Answer» HI,
Whenever my user print out email from MS outlook2003 from his XP notebook, the email will show slightly-cropped on the left. This printout problem HAPPEN on every COPIER or PC he printed. This printout problem 'eats up' a little on the letter close to the left side of the printout page. His email printout is also COVERS nearly the whole A4 page. How can I solve this two problems? I have put another printer and directly connected to the notebook to do email printout - The result is the same. MS outlook2003 was also uninstalled and reinstalled but problem remains. The preference paper size is changed from Letter to A4 but is the same.

Any great soul got here please help.

ThanksI believe is the MS outlook2003 setting that have been changed. When I print out the email forwarded by him from my notebook, the email printout is normal. any kind soul in here can advice a solution?

Thanks More than likely it's a driver problem.  I've had similar problems over the years and it's always been a driver problem.

Make sure the driver is up to date.  And if it is, CALL tech support for the printer and tell them the problem.

Even a company like HP has released bad drivers but they can tell you which driver to use.

Solve : Real Player Version 11 Not Opening At All?

Answer»

Dear friends,

Suddenly my Real player stopped WORKING, so I uninstalled it and reinstalled and it installed properly but when i DOUBLE click on the icon, the program does not run at all. I uninstalled again and installed in a different directory, still no use. After uninstalling, I went to the respective folders and manually deleted them too. Even after RUNNING combofix, the problem has not resolved.

I did not install any program during this problem or before this problem.

I tried to install Real player 10.5 too, but to no avail.

My OS is Win XP pro. Antivirus is McAfee V 13.11.

Can anybody help me as I need Real player very badly.

Solve : Mouse freezing up question?

Answer»

I've tried several different mice, different usb ports on both the front and back of the Dell Dimesion E510, and the mouse freezes up nonstop lately.  If you unplug it and plug it back in, it will work for a while (as in several minutes) before it does it again.

Does anyone have suggestions?  My only idea is a SLEDGEHAMMER followed by a trip to the store to get a new computer.  We REPLACED the power supply just last month.  Thanks for any ideas you might have-I appreciate your help to keep me sane!

Eta:  I've noticed it doing it while using Mozilla Firefox but also during other applications if that matters.  new battery USB mice don't use batteries, unless they're wireless.

Solve : where do I start??

Answer»

Hi guys,

This isn't a problem but I am looking for some advice. I have been "messing" around with computers for a while now and they absolutely fascinate me. I have just completed a build your own computer course and loved it. I am PARTICULARLY interested in getting into the technical side - PC maintenance, trouble shooting how everything WORKS... but I haven't a clue where to start or what courses to apply for. I know I have to start from complete scratch but who cares! When I phone round colleges and computer centres for help on this particular subject I'm usually fobbed off with application forms on ECDL courses and MCAS courses that I'm not looking for.

If anyone out there has any suggestions at all and can name a place to make a start I would really appreciate it - always find this site very helpful.

Thanks Hi Lorraine,

CHECK out this link ... http://www.computer-schools.us/Computer-Technician-Schools.htm

I'm assuming you want to become a computer repairman or a Computer technician of sorts (whether you want to get a job in that field is totally up to you though  )Hi Lorraine,

I highly recommend PROFESSOR Messers' free A+ training video series.....It's a great aid for anyone wishing to learn about PC repair and what is needed to get certified.....Enjoy.

I just wanted to thank you for your help i've checked out the sites and they are exactly what I was looking for to get a start.

Solve : animated desktop icon?

Answer»

I'm wondering if anyone knows if it's possible to animate a single desktop icon.  I downloaded and installed Spyware Blaster unpaid version) onto a friend's pc (Win XP Home ED) and would like to find a way to REMIND her to manually update the definitions for it.

I THOUGHT if I could animate the icon for S'ware Blaster, say every 4-5 hrs. or so, she might take the hint to check for new DEFINITION updates at least once a wk.

I didn't know if this is possible to do, or if someone out there has a more obvious way to remind her to ck. for new defs. occasionally.

Not afraid to dabble in RegEdit if that's what it takes.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.Have a look here: http://www.iconarchive.com/ for an icon that you think suits. If you can't find an animated one, then just do a quick Google for it. Download it.

Then, go to the Desktop, right click Spyware Blaster and choose Properties. Choose the Shortcut tab, then Change Icon. You can then BROWSE to the icon you downloaded. When finished click Okay.
