Solve : Viewing digital pictures on the computer?

Answer»

Right now my computer is using the Paint program to view my pictures I have downloaded from my camera.  When I click on the thumbnail of a picture, I can't view it in its entirety because the picture is so huge, it just zooms in on a small part of it.  I want to use another program to view my pictures but I don't know how or what to CHANGE it to.  HELP!Try Right-clicking on one of your pictures. Select Open With, and "Choose Program".

Look for "Windows Picture And Fax Viewer"

If it is there, select it. Then check off "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file". Your pictures should now open in the Picture viewer, which allows you zoom in/out.

if it doesn't appear in the list, though:

1. Start->Run. Type regsvr32 shimgvw.dll

you should get a message, DLLRegisterServer in "shimgvw.dll" suceeded.

Now see if it appears in the Open with list. (however, I might add that usually it ALSO re-associated itself with jpegs and gifs and so forth, so you might not need to perform the open with stuff I described above if you need to re-register the dll)Thank you so much!  I have spent so much time trying to figure that out and you just took care of it instantly.  I really appreciate it.Your welcome, we're NERDS, we learn about this stuff for no reason, with the hopes it will come in HANDY for ourselves or others one day

Any other problems come back and visit I resemble that comment....

Solve : Who's had the worst virus ever??

Answer»

I had a pretty bad one at one time it was a Trojan.Zlob called "Security Toolbar 7.1" It hyjacked my homepage, slowed down my internet, smothered me with pop ups wanting me to BUY rouge anti-spyware, it even made my antivirus not work. Eventually we had to call Symantec to remove it which cost us $100 .Here is a description of the virus: (Article website contained spyware threats, sorry. Just search for Security Toolbar 7.1 removal if you want to know more about it)

If you had a worse virus, post a description of it, and lets find out who had the worst virus ever!
This is a very broad question. Define "worst"?

Quote

And if you had come here, it wouldn't have cost anything.

Anyway, to answer your question, IMO, Virut or Sality is the worst virus you could get. I didn't get it, but have seen plenty of cases with it. To get a description of it, just type "virut" in the search bar on the forum. His is worst, so far, in terms of cost...There is a virus hidden inside every Windows machine.
It cannot be seen.
It cannot be detected.
It cannot be removed.
Ever wonder why your computer keeps screwing around? Now you know....I was reminded of this:

Quote
Is Windows a virus?
With the recent problems being encountered by Windows users all ACROSS the country, people are BEGIN to ask themselves if windows is a virus. In response to the high demand for an answer to that question a study was done and concluded the following.

1. Viruses replicate quickly.
Windows does this.

2. Viruses use up valuable system resources, slowing down the system as they do so.
Windows does this.

3. Viruses will, from time to time, trash your hard disk.
Windows does this.

4. Viruses are usually carried, unkown to the user, along with valuable programs and systems.
Windows does that too.

5. Viruses will occasionally make the user suspect their system is too SLOW (see 2) and the user will buy new hardware.
Same with Windows, yet again.

Maybe Windows really is a virus.

Nope! There is a difference!

Viruses are well supported by their authors, are frequently updated, and tend to become more sophisticated as they mature. So there! Windows is not a virus.
Who the heck wrote that?

I'd agree with about two of those. It's one of those old jokes floating around the Internet, that's all...it's been around since the days of Windows 3.1, at least...1. and 4. don't make sense. windows doesn't replicate itself, and programs can't carry windows to other machines.

the obvious difference being that viruses are intended for malice. Quote from: Aegis on July 12, 2009, 11:31:01 AM

Solve : Octo(8) core or 128 bit??

Answer»

So people, witch do you think will be FIRST that you will be able to buy? And I'm talking about physical cores.

I think that the 8 cores will come out and then the second generation of them will have 128 bit capability and then later an OS will be available.8 bit to 16 bit took about 2 YEARS... 16-bit to 32 bit took over 6... 32 bit to 64 took over a decade.

I think it's a good 20 years before we see a 128-Bit CPU in desktop machines.8 cores will be first, for sure.  64 bit isn't yet mainstream, I think 128 bit will take at least another 10 years, and probably more like 20 as BC says.
On the other HAND, 6 core SERVER CPUs are already out, 6 core desktop CPUs are being released soon.  I predict 8 core next year, maybe more.

And they may use this information to prove that you are a terrorist.

Its legal for the government to do this, without suspicion that you might blow up your base right now, but, not for anyone else.

I'm not sure there is any way you can really prove that your communications are being intercepted.

Solve : Making DVD from video capture?

Answer»

I would appreciate any help with this new (for me) adventure. To be brief, I have a satellite tv digital recorder with 60 hours of old movies that I would like to put on DVD, but not sure how. I would like do this before some glitch erases them. Basically, I need to record them onto my hard drive, edit them, then record to DVD. I guess the best thing to do is tell you what I have.

A computer with 20 free gigs of hard drive space
A new 500 gig EXT. hard drive
One Gig Ram
Toshiba DVD - R burner in the computer
Hauppauge USB video capture device
Sabrent TV Tuner/Video capture card (not yet installed)
Assorted software:-
Nero Suite 6, (Nero Express 2)
Windows Movie Maker,
Ulead DVD MovieFactory SE
Hauppauge WinTV
DVD Shrink

I have used Nero to edit short mpegs, but nothing as BIG as a full movie. I have used DVD Shrink successfully to copy actual DVDs, but don't know if it applies in this situation. I do know some of these movies are over 2 hours long and the DVDs only allow 120 minutes, so if I could edit out any commercials, they may fit the DVD and that would be great! I will appreciate any help on this, even pointing me in the right direction. THANK you.

Solve : How much longer will desktop computers be around??

Answer»

I've been studying for the A+ Certification for a while now and spend a lot of time on small computer projects, trying to learn everything I can, in a nut shell.  The question keeps crossing my mind, "How much of this is worth it"?

It seems like it could take years for someone to attain an intimate knowledge of desktop computers, and by the time they do, the technology that they are focused on, in some cases becomes obsolete.

So where is the happy medium?  Essentially, how do you know which technologies are worth spending the time to learn?  I hope they are around for a loooonngg time.  How else am I supposed to mod if there are no desktops? They better be around for a while.Desktop computers will be around until computers become obsolete. If you have 2 computers, 1 laptop and 1 desktop, both brand new and you paid the same amount for. If they both run the same OS, the desktop should always be faster (unless you download loads of junk! )It seems like what your focus is should depend on where you are in computers (i.e. career or hobby)  If you are employed then, most likely, your company will keep you up to date on what you should be focused on, and PROVIDE timely training. If you are a hobbiest then simply be careful what you purchase and/or begin to study.....in other words........do your homework first

With this perspective, is the only way I can justify spending hours learning this stuff.

If it comes down to deciding between a desktop and a laptop, it depends on the person. An average person would pick the laptop (if the desktop is the same price), because he/she can bring it around the house, but someone who prefers computer speed and total memory would probably want a desktop (and XP).Desktops have benefits over laptops and visa versa, as you imply.......However, when laptop capability exceeds that of desktops, perhaps that is when we'll see desktops begin to fade away.  Face it, why own a computer that is stationary, when you can be mobile?the japanese have invented a PC built into a table with no visable  parts and works

by touch , it was great to see it working , so if they keep going they will be making

them for the market in a few years Quote from: hot dog on April 10, 2009, 04:32:29 PM
However, when laptop capability exceeds that of desktops, perhaps that is when we'll see desktops begin to fade away.  Face it, why own a computer that is stationary, when you can be mobile?

I don't see laptop capability ever exceeding that of desktops because with a laptop you are restricted by size and that puts a major limit on what you can do with them compared to a desktop that you can make as big as you want and LOAD up with far more stuff then you could fit in a laptop frame. Quote
It seems like it could take years for someone to attain an intimate knowledge of desktop computers,

A person who says that is focussed too much on surface issues such as hardware implementations and not enough on deeper principles. It's a bit like saying that studying telecommunications in the 1950s was a waste of time because vacuum tubes got replaced by transistors. The TVs and radios changed, but electricity and radio waves didn't, and the tasks the equipment perfomed didn't change in nature. If you were bogged down at the level of this-wire-goes-here and that-wire-goes-there then I daresay things got a bit hectic as the technology changed...

Anyway, desktops and laptops, palmtops, netbooks, etc, all use the same "technology". It's just shrunk a bit for the smaller devices.

Quote
Face it, why own a computer that is stationary, when you can be mobile?

Because when you're at home you don't need to be mobile? A laptop and a desktop are designed for different patterns of use.

Because you don't like dicking around with a stupid little keyboard and a cockamamie TOUCHPAD and a nasty little hinged screen and a battery that runs down, all in a package that you have to lug around and worry about getting stolen or damaged? That costs a *censored* of a lot more than a desktop with the same features?

Technology will always advance the computer. Years ago a building was a computer houseing.
Faster and faster they will go.
Smaller and smaller, and the single most dominating factor of a LAP top will be the battery life to sustain the ever increasing demand of power to run these super fast machines.

Solve : Try Before You Buy Policy -- (torrenting)?

Answer»

I, once again, got bored, so I'm AUTHORING another post =D

First stating: This is not helping people find torrents, what your favorite torrent is, or anything of the such. It is simply over the matter where people "torrent" a program, decide whether they like it or not, then either delete it or buy the legal copy.

I, PERSONALLY, think that a "Trial" of a program does not give enough of the program out to decide whether it is WORTH it or not so --

Whats your stance on this?

P.S. Anyone played http://www.xgenstudios.com/game.php?keyword=assembler-3 yet? Been wasting a couple of hours on that and wondered if anyone has tried it -- LEVEL 36! Quote from: liambiscuit on April 12, 2009, 04:18:19 PM

Yes, I have a very good example of this.... I just bought Adobe CS4, and one of the programs I like so far is Illustrator. You can download a 30 day trial from the Adobe site, but I feel that is not enough. It will take me 6 months to even get the hang of this program, it is so complicated. Quote

This specific time. A person wrote a virus that attatched to the p2p sofware as an update. It was a smart trojan that uploaded files it thought to be useful from your computer. Many companies have secretive info like projects whatever. Since it was more or less an update and not a virus you only had to uninstall the p2p software to get rid of it. And ofcourse only people with the specific p2p software could be affected. Quote

Solve : Anyone Else Know of ESRI/ARC??

Answer»

Does anybody know about ESRI/ARC and GIS?

I am grad school right now and was told I needed to take classes in GIS to learn ESRI for my career interest...geography, planning, and demography.

I got to say that I find ESRI and GIS to be an absolutely TERRIBLE subject and system.
This is completely un-user friendly with poor directions, the labs take hours, the book makes all kinds of assumptions about what you should know and skips steps.

The WORST thing is that when you ask others they just say "well yea the system can be this way but you just have to play around," to me ESRI SEEMS to be something designed by people who are EASports rejects.

I was wondering if any of you are familiar with ESRI and GIS and if you have had similar experiences, what you recommend, and if for my field I really need this or this is something I can skip.Hello, here is a personal OPTION,
but one that is held by a growing minority.

Now is not the right time to invest you personal energy in a science that is both hard but lacking in practical use.

Go to a library, maybe not the one at you school, browse around and find out some things. Like maybe:
1.  Why do politicians ignore demographics except if it has something to do with voting?
2. Why do businessmen ignore the needs of people unless there is a profit motive?
3. Why does the planning commission make a new study of something that was obviously wrong years ago?

Where are you? In the a major English speaking country? Visit some other countries. That is an education in itself and one that will lead to doors that academia will never show you. To really understand Demographics you must understand the CULTURE and traditions of other peoples.

BTW. Have you looked at how the Dutch plan their GROWTH?

Solve : Slow running laptop...humming and chirping as well. No, I'm not even kidding.?

Answer»

I honestly didn't know where to put this question...I think there's numerous problems...so I put it here. If its in the wrong place- sorry, I'm new here.
So I've been abroad for several months now- I have a T60, IBM Thinkpad. I've had it about three YEARS now. I downloaded skype before studying abroad which made the computer a little slow but no worries. A few months ago it sounded like the computer was HUMMING. Like the fan was REALLY loud. It has been that way for a long time now. Today, (I know it sounds crazy, but I swear its true) I heard a FAINT chirping noise and thought it was a bird outside or something until I realized it was coming from the computer. I put it on sleep and started it later, but the noise only lasted a few minutes before it went away again. The humming fan is still going.
Even more recently, a little sign came up in the right hand corner saying: Low virtual memory. I spent most of last night getting rid of old pictures, and stuff and emptying the recycling bin.
Went to a computer help SHOP. They want to remove McAfee and other antivirus programs. They want to remove a bunch of other stuff from my laptop as well. I do not know what they have in mind. They never said. They also want me to look at a hard drive as a backup device. And lastly they want to check the fan on my computer.
Does this sound reasonable? Does anybody have any advice of what I can do to fix my own computer? Any advice on whats causing the humming or chirping?
Thank you!The chirping/humming and low virtual memory error messages tend to lead me to one culprit here...
The hard drive is probably getting ready to fail.

To determine this find out in your manual or at the laptop manuf. site what brand drive is in there...
Then travel to the HDD manuf. site and DLoad and run the FREE diagnostics on that hard drive.
This will tell you if in fact this is the issue. Run the long test. It takes awhile so do it at bedtime and let it run til it finishes.
The less you can use the machine in the meantime the better...there are methods where you can replace the drive (not too costly) and save all your data before failure OCCURS but let's find out first if this is the issue.

Report back with the results and again try to use it as little as possible til we know...Plus, it also sounds like you are running more than one anti-virus at once...this is a very bad idea as it causes performance issues, and also some certain type conflict with each other.

God is this site blimmin' good or what! COUPLE of NEW and old probs l've had get answered quickly so here's another one which is bugging me.
It seems that l can't ADD a program attachment (.exe) into an e-mail (my first attempt but it just won't let me do it).
I don't really want to upload it as a torrent (if that's the correct term) and when l look up free upload sites, they seem to want some money at one time or another or else they want to know everything about you, which gets me a bit wary.
Is there in fact a FREE site that anyone knows of where l can send a couple of files (up to 50mb) so that someone else can access and download them, or am l just talking a load of hogwash?
ThanksWell, try downloading 7-Zip. ZIP the exe file and then try sending.Well bu33er me!
See, I've got winrar and all that jazz and it never even crossed my mind!
Thanks kpac
Regards

Good luck.Have you tried yousendit dot com?  There's other services like that out there that offer free transfers for files under a certain size (USED to be under 100MB)

I once tried a direct ftp connection from my home computer to a friends and it was going extremely fast for about 20 seconds until my ISP suddenly throttled it.  Of course I can't complain unless I pay for a business account since residential accounts aren't supposed to run servers.  (including file sharing apps technically speaking)

Solve : Making an "Old School" Gaming Machine...?

Answer»

I have an old (8-10 yrs) system sitting AROUND that I got from my brother in law as a stopgap measure when my then current system was down.  It is a Micron Clientpro with Windows ME for O/S.  Since he doesn't want it back, and I have no use for it, it occurred to me I COULD clean the hard drive, and reload it with DOS, then use the system for playing all those wonderful games I haven't played in about twelve years. (I have had no luck at all with the EMULATORS, and darn it, I miss those old games I've got stacked up down in the basement.)  Anyway, I have a little bit of technical know-how (enough to know my biggest problem just getting this off the ground will be the drivers having to be reloaded - I don't have any discs for the devices in this system, and while I might be able to find some of the drivers on line, whether it would be as easy to install them to fresh DOS in a system that wasn't designed to work with DOS frightens me a little bit.  I have managed to get one or two DOS games to work on XP by opening the .exe files (Panzer General, for instance), but others don't COOPERATE the same way.  Furthermore, saving a game is impossible, apparently.  And, of course, there are issues that I have learned to work around, such as inability to adjust mouse sensitivity or video playback speed.  Another major obstacle with many of the DOS games is the soundcard setup procedures they put you through, which obviously weren't set up by Nostradamus, and don't provide options that feature today's cards, and can't auto-detect modern soundcards.
So, I guess I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on this twisted little idea of mine, or instructions on how to do it.  If you do, please keep your instructions as simple as possible, as when it comes to things like changing lines of text in BIOS, or similarly scary procedures, my brain just shuts down completely.
I'm mainly wondering about the driver issue, but if we can get me past that hitch, then I guess any advice somebody has about installing/setting up these old games re: the sound card issues or settings that will allow them to be played with less scrolling problems, etc, that would be great too!
If you're able to give me a step by step, please remember I'm starting out from having to clean the hard drive... Thanks! [/i]Well- first you'll need to get the system information from that PC. If it still boots into ME, you can download and Install Everest and Save a report and attach it to a reply here.

The next obstacle would be getting DOS install disks. Obviously Version 6.22 or 6.0 are the better versions to try to get. Note that MS offers a free upgrade from version 6.0 to 6.22, so if you have to settle for 6.0, go for it.

Ebay is a great source for older Operating systems.

Once you've got that set up, we can help you find the appropriate drivers for the system. Since it's about the right age to still have DOS drivers for it's components, you should be alright. Some games work WITHOUT any drivers installed at all- all they need is the BLASTER environment variable. Thankfully most sound card setups set this variable for you  Hoo-Ahh!  I have 3.5"s of 6.22 right here! So far so good.  Yes, it does still boot, but i'll have to set it up to get all the system specs before I do anything else.  It was primarily used for business apps, so I'm guessing there's not much of a video or sound package in it. (One of the reasons I figured it would lend itself more to this DOS project than anything else of the same approximate age...well that's good, no need to go hunting through listings.

As far as sound and video, it's probably state-of-the-art compared to what was available when DOS games were king. Or at least high-end.

The only thing might be how compatible it's video is to VGA standards, and how compatible it's sound is with a sound blaster.

only really an issue in maybe 2% of PCs that are this age. Really, it's the perfect age for a PC to convert to a DOS game machine.Looking under the hood didn't tell me anything much, but old article from PC world suggests this thing has got:  Celeron 433, 4.3 gb HD, 24x40 CD Rom, 128 mb SDRAM, 128kb cache, Intel 810 Integrated graphics, and ADI 1881 sound.  Only modem card and phone card in PCI slots, plus a little brown slot above the PCIs (AGP maybe?).You should be able to use some generic svga driver and generic 'sound blaster compatible' sound driver but with a system that old you're going to end up replacing the cmos battery soon - hopefully it's removable.. I had an old system where the battery was soldered to the motherboard, lol.

What emulators have you tried?  My suggestion is to download Dosbox on your best pc.  I wouldn't have recommended it a few years ago but it's come a long way and more recently I've been able to run some big games I couldn't before.

Solve : What to put in my new computer?

Answer»

I'm going to buy a new computer very soon, I have a 4yo LAPTOP and want something newer with more memory etc that doesn't die on me all the time. I have the option of putting it together pretty much from scratch (nice computer shop) so what should I go for? I'd LIKE some suggestions for good graphic cards and processors etc. Should I stick with XP or try Vista? What brand should I buy? Anything special I should add?Budget ?
What will the machine be used for mainly ?
Is this your 1st build ?

Help US to help you...Budget is 10-15.000 SEK, I'm guessing it's ~1.500$. Normal price, I think?

What will I use it for? Games, MUSIC, videos, programs... Nothing specific but something that can handle graphic-heavy games.

I'm not going to build the PC myself (I'm not that talented), only tell the people what I want and they'll put it together for me. I'd just like some advice on what to put in it. E.g. I'm used to XP, but would Vista be a better choice? Should I stick with Radeon or go with GeForce? Intel Pentium, Intel Core or something else?

Since your going to be doing some games and say that its graphically intense programs, then you should go with Intel Core, a dual or quad processor will be helpful.
check out newegg.com. they got deals now and then and also they have preconfigured computer selections so you can see what they do and then you can build yourself a similar pc with upgrades from what you see if budget allows... Quote from: x2543 on April 15, 2009, 07:33:03 PM

oh sorry, I didn't notice she lived elsewhere. But she can look at newegg offerings and build a good pc herself.  Thanks for everyone's advice. I've looked in a few sites online to see what kind of combos are available as well as talked to the guys in the shop. My new PC will be a "gamer", heavily geared towards handling games, since it seems the easiest setup. It'll have Intel Core 2 Quad, ASUS Geforce 9800GT, 500GB & Vista. If I need or want anything else it will be easy to add or change. It'll also be cheaper than I thought + they'll lower the price for a new screen. Make sure you get a good amount of RAM too.

With Vista and Games you probably might want atleast 2Gigs of RAM, my numbers may be wrong but couldn't hurt to have a few more Gigs to that. Quote from: karinms on April 16, 2009, 01:48:42 PM

How many MB of RAM is on that VIDEO card?

And yeah, you'll want atleast 2gigs of computer ram.If you have $1500 you can get a better computer than that.  What country are you in? Sweden.RAM is 4GB (and something called DDR2 RAM-memories), that's good enough right?

Sweden. I probably could but I think it's a good deal, I'll pay ~$500 less than I thought. The shop is small but owned by one of the best computer-guys in the country (he's Finnish, so probably two countries) and should know what a good computer needs. He's an expert in extracting files from dead harddrives, even those that others say are impossible to salvage. That is perfect amount of RAM

And don't worry about the salvaging, my old Dell Dimension's HD was failing and freezing right after boot up so once I got my new rig we transfered the files over to the new rig, they cleaned it out, ran diagnostics to check to see if it could be used as a Secondary drive and it was ready to go as one. just know that 32 bit editions of windows can't really read al 4gb of memory, but the dual channel I think would still be there. People have said 3.25 gb or osmething like that is what they see. But you really don't need so much memory though unless you're really using a lot of memory.

Solve : pc not sinding signal to monitor?

Hi
have a problem with my HP desktop PC, problems began three days ago and when I start the computer, it starts and everything is working correctly but the signal is not sent to the screen, the screen is ok I'm using right now, I thought that maybe it is wrong the video card and got the loan from another computer but did not SOLVE the problem, I need help and want to say thank you in advance, I will say that the video card on my pc built up on the board.

Does your monitor support DVI and VGA inputs? Perhaps it's looking in the wrong mode. Quote from: samim on October 28, 2009, 11:02:54 AM
the screen is ok I'm using right now
So, you switched monitors?  Does the monitor you're using work on another computer?yes the monitor is working with another pc and monitor is ok monitor support is VGASammin, it SOUNDS like either there is a problem with your video card, your computer is trying to display a screen resolution  or refresh rate that the monitor does not support. Do you have another monitor you can try? If  so, trying changing your screen resolution to 800x600 and select the lowest frequency refresh rate. There's also the possibility that the cable is BAD. Most CRT monitors have the VGA cable hard wired, but if it's flat panel, you can try a different cable.
hi and thank you that you had hours to help me but I will say that the monitor that I used with a PC is okay and I used the weather monitor with pc but when I turn off the computer and started again when the computer does not send signal to the monitor I have tried the pc with another monitor and changed the display card and take out all the wires and put back but it does not help, pc starts but does not send the signal to the monitor, I have changed ram but did not solve the problem. even if it is a flat screen monitor but the connector cable set firmly in the *censored* and can not be replaced but I am sure that there is not any problem with the cable and monitor. HOPE for an answer

Solve : Wishful Thinking??

Answer»

I wish that everything on my computer was just the way it was last week. I've heard a lot of talk about restoring to a certain date. Is this possible? If you have system restore enabled then yes (to a certain extent). System restore can return your system files and registry (and a couple of other files) to the STATE in which it was at the time the restore point was created. A much better solution is to either purchase or DOWNLOAD a Disk Imaging utility and use it on a regular basis. Programs of this sort take a "snapshot" of your drive and you can restore that image at any time.  I have been to System Restore but can't find a way to restore to a date. Is this available on Win98?
I don't believe Win 98 had a system restore feature. If I'm not mistaken it was introduced with Win ME and then Win XP. You can restore a backed up registry if you want. What specific problems are you having?  That's what I figured. Can you recommend a free Disk Imaging utility. It won't help now but could come in handy in the future.
Is it possible that I have this feature in one of the utilities I have now? Maybe Ccleaner or Avast?Since you haven't said what the problem is we can't offer much help other than to answer your questions directly.

1) No, you do not have a utility that can do what you want

2) If you want to restore the REGISTRY to an earlier date see this link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221512

3) Good FREE disk imaging utilities: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/backupandimage.shtml  Thanks for the LINKS! Good stuff!
For some reason my display has reverted to the 98 defaults and there is no record of my custom settings. I have tried changing fonts and colours and the likes but I can't remember exactly how it was I just know this isn't it. It's like living in someone else's house! I'm also seeing strange things like the occasional missing Icon for a file or a programs parts out of place. I have tried deleting them and downloading again but they still display oddly. First, when you create custom display settings you should save them with a specific name so you can always recall it. Second, if I were you I'd do a full system scan with my anti virus utility. I'd also suggest downloading and running a scan with MalwareBytes. Better safe than sorry.  They were saved but they aren't on the list anymore that's why I was trying to find a record of them.
I just ran Spybot, Sas, and Avast on Friday but I will give them another shot. I will run Malwarebytes as well. Thank you
OK, I ran Avast, SAS, Spybot and a thourough Scandisk and didn't find any problems. Interestingly though, when I opened DirectX diagnostic my desktop icons were fine but the background shrunk to a little square in the middle of the screen. A RESTART fixed it and when I opened DirectX again it didn't do it.
Some of my programs are still displaying oddly. Either the parts are out of place or completely out of view. Some things that use to max can't anymore. Even web pages are narrowed when I used to have a scrollbar at the bottom.
  Any thoughts?
Did you run a scan with MalwareBytes?  No. It doesn't work with 98se.  I have found that some files from an old AV have appeared in C:\ and program files and maybe other places. There are two entries for it in "Auto Exec. bat" in the System Configuration Utility which were unchecked but I never had time to find out how to remove them. I have heard that competing AV's can give the appearance of infections. Might this be the problem or am I way off base? Either way it would be nice to get rid of all the unnecessary files.
How do I find everything associated with the old AV and get rid of it? I tried running some words through "Find" and got very confusing results.

Solve : Computer sparingly wants to power on?

Answer»

Self-built computer, year old motherboard (Gigabyte - EP35-DS3R), 4 gigs DDR2 Ram, 8800 GT Graphics card.

WAS a 650 watt psu, replaced with 850

My computer recently stopped working out of the blue and I've had this happen before and I just simply replaced the PSU. This time, i've replaced the psu with an 850 watt which should be more than enough and pressing the power button, it sparingly wants to start running and the lights in the case turn off and on. I've tried plugging it STRAIGHT into the wall to see if it's just not the surge protector. ANOTHER odd THING is i'm not getting the little system light on indicating that it's getting power.

I'm somewhat new to building my own computers but i've never had such problems till now.

I guess i should note, i switched it out with a compatible motherboard and it did the same thing. What does "sparingly" mean ? ?

That being asked i've seen brand new PSU's out of the box DOA...well hitting the power button a few times, it finally turns on but obviously it's having trouble wanting to boot up and it either turns off on it's own after about 3 seconds or sits there with the internal lights flickering.

Solve : What is your favorite brand of computer??

Answer»

Today, there are MANY computer brands in the market, upgrading every now and then. The question is, out of the many brands available, what is your favorite? For me, Mac computers
I gotta go with Mac as well. The aluminum bodies back by an excellent customer service makes them an easy choice. I got burned badly with Dell not to long ago, and none of the other brands stand out to much to me...

I build my systems though, so the only computer brands I buy are on the laptop lineMight DEPEND on whether you're talking about desktops or laptops.  My laptop is a Compaq but I have no strong brand preference.  If I were buying a new computer, I'd have to search for some reviews, compare specs, prices, etc.I don't buy brands, and like soybean I have no real preference when it comes to laptops, although I tend to lean towards toshiba (still have a 440CDX going strong ). Desktops I try to build or swap out parts; brands become those of the components.I only buy Dell machines and custom builds, although if I had the money, I would think about buying a Mac for the hardware and putting Windows on it.For me it was Dell, but I finally after 5 years had to make a quick switch now its HP. Why? Becuase I love it because I own it and do not need another!I am shocked that the first two answers were Mac.

For the last week or so I have been bemoaning the fact that I didn't buy a MAC recently when the insurance company offered me a MAC replacement for one of my first computers that was lost in a fire. Instead i purchased an HP with VISTA 64 and a year later i'm still wondering if the "critical" updates will ever stop.

One morning not so long ago i was visiting a friend in NYC who got his MAC the same time i got my HP. We SIGNED on to our computers at the same time. He checked his email, paid a few bills, updated a work schedule and signed off before i was done clicking warning buttons. After three restarts for " these updates to complete " he was back from the bakery on the corner with coffee break goodies.

MAC

Mac or Dell. They are the only 2 brands I trust.i trust mac nd love toshiba laptops

Solve : Invisible (but not hidden) folder.?

Answer»

This is a really easy way to make an invisible (but not hidden) folder. This only works on your desktop.

Right click on desktop > New > Folder
Right click on the newly created folder > Rename
Press: ALT+1060 (or paste Code: [Select]  into it)
OPEN the folder.
Tools > Folder Options > View
Uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
OK
Press: F5
Open Desktop.ini
Replace the contents with:
Code: [Select][.ShellClassInfo]
IconFile=%SystemRoot%\system32\SHELL32.dll
IconIndex=51

Close the window, and it's invisible. If you know where you put it, you can hide stuff in it.FindFirstFile()/FindNextFile still see it...

although WIN32_FIND_DATA.cFileName will be " " which might confuse badly written programs. Quote from: BC_Programmer on April 19, 2009, 01:46:00 PM

We don't want to make you Mum cross.

But with your method, what if a user arranges icons by name and then by size? Will he not notice a gap in the list?if you REALLY want to hide the file, just write a background program that Hooks FindFirstFile() and FindNextFile() by patching the loaded copy of kernel32.dll. make sure they never return the file your hiding.

Don't hook CreateFile(), and you'll be able to, for example, open the "hidden" file in notepad.

of course loading/unloading and patching DLLs in memory that are used by other PROCESSES isn't exactly childs-play...

Solve : resolution changes?

Answer»

my desktop and offline resolution is 1024x768 but changes to 800x600 online.
restore back one day and it corrects for a few days.
can this be corrected 'on the fly'? and what is changing it?

TIA
gubba

Your hardware specs, especially your display adpater/video card?  How much video memory?  What driver version is installed for your video card?

Does this change happen when you're visiting a particular website?Sounds like some app is calling for a different resolution when it loads. And have you done a full scan with your av and MalwareBytes just to be safe?

Not TRYING to give you a hard time, but what difference does it make what his hardware is? And I don't see how a website could change the desktop resolution. Quote

Honestly, I don't either.  But, he said his resolution changes when he goes online.  I suspect, as you say, some app is calling for a different resolution when it loads.  So, I'm just trying to CLARIFY exactly when this happens.  Maybe it's not really related to going online, he just perceives it to be happening then.It would more LIKELY be related to the browser than where he's browsing to Ok, would like to ask what browser he's using then?   No - it doesn't matter  . The problem is almost certainly one of three things:

1) A piece of software is calling for a resolution change when it loads or
2) Malware or
3) Defective driver or video cardi will repeat.....

when it changes it effects ALL online sites.  i'm using ie8.

desktop, 'word', APPLICATIONS, games, explore, search, all stay in the higher resolution.

when i use 'restore' and go back one day all is ok again for about a week. Quote from: gubba on November 04, 2009, 10:19:07 PM

So, you're saying you have two resolutions when this happens, one for everything but IE and another resolution for IE.  And, to reverse the undesired change in IE, you use 'restore'.

First, let's get our terminology and concepts straight.  At any given time, your computer has ONE resolution setting, only ONE.  And the normal way to change resolution is to open Display Properties and set it there. Display Properties can be OPENED by right clicking on the desktop and selecting Properties. Here's a reference: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/setup/personalize/resolution.mspx

What I suspect is happening, which is what you're calling a different resolution, is that you're inadvertently changing font size or zooming in/out in IE. This can happen if you have a wheel mouse and move the wheel while the Ctrl key is pressed. Try it. You can also change text size in IE by clicking View on the menu bar and selecting Text Size. Zoom can be set from the View menu by selecting Zoom.I agree - now that you're explaining it better it sounds like nothing more than the font size needs to be adjusted.I also agree. And my vote counts twice because I have a parrot.

At least, it counts twice until somebody points out that parrots can't voteParrots can't vote.

Solve : Triple Boot?????

Answer» http://www.justlinux.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=143973

Check this out, 100 Os's spanning multiple hard drives and partitions. Crazy but I'm amazed  Quote
Four is the most amout of OPERATING systems on one drive
Are you sure?
I think we already did that on another thread .
On maybe it was how many Drives can you have!

I would guess the limit would be 19 bookable partitions on one normal drive using just the normal boot manager in Windows XP. But I am not sure about VISTA.

The problem is that they may not be 19 variations that are worth having on one drive. But I am really sure I could get 5 on one Drive. I think.

But the original post was about doing three, and the Microsoft site says it can be done. They INDICATE that it can be up to five.

But they forgot to say that for five OS on one drive you have to ORDER Pizza and Coke delivery because you might stave before you get done.
Squall, if you can afford it System Commander is a GREAT TOOL for partitioning and managing multiple OS's.

Check it out
http://eu.v-com.com/product/System_Commander_Home.htmlSystem Commander will run as many OS's as you want...i've had it for years.that is interesting

Solve : Can't access anything that requires a password?

First issue. NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER BUY ELECTRONICS FROM A FLEA MARKET. If you just bought it, use an xp cd and re-install it. That way, any viruses that are basically guarenteed to be on there will be gone, and the correct settings will be re-SET. You will lose all your files, but don't put in a flash drive, etc. or any infection may spread. I ran virus protection on it. There are no viruses. Just that one issue and I can't figure out how to fix it.If you are sure, then put an nessasary files on a flash drive and re-install xp. On  this FORUM there is policy of not helping with laptop passwords.

But from your comment, it seems that you can start the computer and get it to somehow run. Is that correct?

The prior owner may have put a password lock on some personal information. Or have LOCKED the administer account.

If you got the Install CD with the Laptop you can do a new installation and have a usable MACHINE.The install CD will destroy all information on the HDD and provide a fresh copy of the original Operating System.
(Forgot to motion. Some laptops have a built-in recovery system.)

If you are satisfied with the laptop and think it is worthwhile, you may want to contact the manufacture of the laptop. Expect them to respond by email if the laptop is still under their support. Otherwise you may be on your own.

Now in some cases, you can buy a replacement OEM install disk for a fraction of the retail price of Windows VISTA or XP. These disks only work on the original machine. They are sold at a discount for repair of older computers that had a proper OS and the owner lost the CD.

It starts and runs fine. It just won't let me go anywhere that requires a password. I have no recovery disk for it.
How do I know if it has built in recovery? Quote from: karleigh on November 07, 2009, 01:20:13 PM

That information is on the HP site.
Laptops are often set up different from Desktops. Some have recovery CDs, some have recovery partitions. But it depends on the model.  There might even be a special disk called 'recovery', but it is not really a XP install disk.

Solve : April Tip regarding MSCONFIG /numproc - true or false??

Answer»

"If you're running Windows XP or Vista with a computer that has a multiple core PROCESSOR such as the Intel Core 2 duo you can increase how fast your computer boots up by having it use multiple processors for its boot sequence. Following the below steps to have Windows do this for you.)"

Can anyone verify this? As far as I'd been aware Windows boots using all available cores, this setting only configures it to use less or a specific number for troubleshooting - I've googled and found differing opinions....I'm pretty SURE it's false. I remember seeing a high-profile TECH blogger writing it as FUD. might of been Mark Russinovich.Voodoo...

Where is this Tip from ? ?http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;833721

Quote

/numproc=number
This switch SETS the number of processors that Windows will run at startup. With this switch, you can force a multiprocessor system to use only the quantity of processors (number) that you specify. This switch can help you troubleshoot performance problems and defective CPUs.

There are no performance or any other gains by changing the default setting. There could be issues, however. Vista will use fully all available processors once it enters kernel mode at the end of startup, no matter what you set for the number of processors in MSCONFIG.
