Solve : little horizontal flickering lines on screen? |
Answer» well, i just reinstalled Fallout TACTICS on my pc along with the first two as well. i also installed virtual villager. I have bigger, more graphically intensive games lile Eve: the second genises that i run with no adverse lag or any visual problems, its just these old games. And these 4 programs should have no problem on my system, yet there are many little horizontal lines that either stay on the screen till the picture changes( when new lines apear in new random locations) or they flicker continuously. they are usually white, but vary in color and are around a centimeter wide but only a pixel or 3 tall. but the length varies if i change the screen resolution. The 8400GS is not a gaming graphics card and it wont even use the 512MB of RAM thats on it. Whereas a 8600GT or a 9600GT graphics card MIGHT use the full 512MB memory at high resolutions. Seems like this could be the problem. I dont know much about GFX cards. Your current card is probably fine but just not powerful enough to run those games. When I said its a graphics problem I simply ment it has something to do with the graphics card or setting. Not sure if I asked, have you tried re-installing th most current drivers for you card? |

Solve : system speed? |
Answer» What do you think would be faster? but wouldnt a 2ghz dual core have a higher fsb then that? Like 800 or 1066?Irrelevant. That's not the question. some old slot A motherboards had two CPU slots. it was labelled "for testing only" but you could install a second CPU in it. You needed NT to use multiple processors back then, though. Were discussing two entirely seperate things here... Processer speed/cycles... And FSB speeds. The CPU being dual core will obviously do things faster... But it will be limited by the bus speeds so it's hard to say without bench-testing both machines.I suppose in reality, the two systems you are comparing, like patio was saying, there is a lot more to figure in, than what was in my two pretend computers ie. ram/cpu ratio, fsb speed, single core vs multi-core, and of COURSE what Aegis was TALKING about, whether your apps are written to take advantage of a multi-core processor......like hyper threading, apps must be written to take advantage of it ..more over, what the system is generally being used for.... A gamers system is obviously going to need more computing power than some secretary's OEM desktop. but in my pretend example, I guess the dual core wins! Maybe I should have made the argument more interesting and made the two puters like this: 200 MHz FSB, single core, 2 GHz processor VS 100 MHz FSB, dual core, 2 GHz processor I doubt there are many multi-core systems with an fsb of 100 MHz, although I have heard of them... |

Solve : Am I missing something to run .exe files?? |
Answer» I can't open some .exe FILES. I'm trying to install some drivers on a PC with xp, but for some reason when I click on the setup.exe file, nothing happens, it doesn't open or run anything. I thought that the driver was corrupted, but I tried to install that same driver on another pc with xp and it worked. I tried to install something else, at first the little window showing all the files that are being STALLED shows for a second or 2, then it disapears, it doesn't complete the installation. I should get a message saying that the installation is complete, but I do not get the message and I don't get any error messages, it just does nothing. Someone suggested me to update the ms installer and to update net frameworks to the latest version, I did what was suggested, but I still get the same problem. I'm sure i'ts not a virus or SPYWARE because I just made a fresh install of xp and I haven't gone online with that pc and I haven't downloaded anything from the net, even before making the fresh install, I didn't have any viruses or spyware. It seems that for some reason I'm not able to install certain programs, because I can open and run other .exe files with no problem. Could I be missimg a dll or an ocx or something else that's preventing me from running or installing certain .exe files? Your help wll be greatly appreciated. By the way, I have windows xp pro sp 2 on that pc. What driver is this that will not install ? ? |

Solve : Need advice on buying a (pre-packaged) "Gaming" Computer.? |
Answer» Hi folks, first time for me to these forums. Just found them while reading some computer reviews, hope I can get some help here before I take the financial plunge. I like that second one. Much better then the gateway. Seconded Really, I dont think your going to find a better computer for that price anywhere I guess http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227146 is promising so far. I've talked to a few people that have shopped at New Egg and were satisfied customers, so I'm not too wary of that. The user reviews are pretty darn good, the only complaints being that the dvd drive power cord is unplugged upon arrival, causing some initial confusion (Thankfully my limited computer prowess should be sufficient in plugging in a cord) And overheating when overclocked is an issue (but room available for more fans). I've never dabbled with overclocking, wouldn't even know where to begin or if it is worthwhile, so not an issue for me. The customer reviews make it sound easy to do, and the addition of a back fan also simple, so maybe that could give me something to PLAY around with later on.Yes newegg is the bestestestest site for computer stuff. Of course it will overheat when overclocked, because it has a stock fan.If you pick machine #2 i see no reason to overclock... But to each his own. Carry on...Overclocking is funnnn. Im going to be doing it soon! Quote from: computeruler on July 25, 2009, 09:52:02 AM Overclocking is funnnn. Im going to be doing it soon! Overclocking is pointless. you get extra heat for reduced stability. Wow, that's a fair trade. |

Solve : CAN'T ACCESS WORLD CLIENT SERVER? |
Answer» Hi. I have the server's IP that I have been ACCESSING for many years now - but recently, after a computer crash - and then reboot - i have not been able to ACCESS it. I would previously type in http://XX.XX.XXX.XXX:XXXX and then a world CLIENT interface would come up where i could enter my log on details, etc, and access my emails. Now i GET a cannot display page on IE8 and Safari 4. I have enabled SSL and TLS protocols like suggested by IE but to no success. I have also tried disabling firewall and allowing exceptions to the server ^^. I have tried going on the World Client site and entering email address and password, but "log on details are incorrect" when I know they haven't been changed - can anybody help me!?! And have you re-checked the IP Address of the computer? umm no i haven't - can you elaborate on this please? also - I am TRYING to access the world client server by using the same IP address that I have always used - and I am not aware that outlook accesses a different address at work. I think the problem maybe on my locally. Thank you for your replies. Chris |

Solve : Alternative to MS Virtual PC & VirtualBox? |
Answer» I'm looking for an alternative to Virtual PC and VirtualBox. hmm, I did not know that.Yeah, I no longer USE MS Virtual PC anymore because: 1. lack of USB support 2. does not work good with Linux (I never could get Ubuntu & Mandriva to run) 3. Unchangeable amount of Video RAM 4. Does not support any Host besides Windows 2000 SP4, XP or Vista I SWITCHED to Sun Virtual Box because it fix these problems 1. Virtual Box has full USB support including booting from Pen Drvie 2. Full Linux, BSD and Solaris support for guest (including guest additions) 3. adjustable video RAM, Virtual PC does not give you this option. So with VB i can choose for my VM to have any amount of video ram I want 4. Can run on most Windows OS's as well as on Linux (which is handy because i'm switching to Ubuntu) Haven't tried VMWare but I guess I will be now I have VMWare, very excellent. I think I switched to Virtual PC for some dumb REASON that MAKES no sense.I've been using VMWare on my desktop, and on my laptop for a while. Flawless...does VMWare work on Linux?yes. there is a VMWare for Linux. That's good. What kind of file does it use for the HDD? A .vhd, .vdi or something else? I figured out when switching from Virtual PC to VirtualBox, I could just change .vhd (virtual PC HDD file) to a .vdi (VB HDD file). It worked good on them all so far except the windows 2000 ONE has a display problem becuase it's using the wrong driver.vmware uses vmdk... I'm not sure if the format is the same as any of the others, though. I'm not sure, but it might be able to use a vhd. Broni might know a bit more about this.Nope. I haven't tried to install Linux yet. They have pretty nice forum at VMW. They'll surely tell you. |

Solve : Computer History? |
Answer» A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions. But a human with an abacus would. That's like saying a person with a pen and a piece of paper is a computer. Quote from: Mulreay on July 04, 2009, 03:21:17 PM That's like saying a person with a pen and a piece of paper is a computer.Yes Quote from: pragma on July 04, 2009, 03:23:47 PM Yes No there human. You don't seem to get that the term computer is older than the electronic machines we today call computers. Up to the early 20th century a computer was a human being. They were essentially made obsolete by the very thing that also took over their name, electronic computers. But that doesn't change the fact that even today, a human doing calculations, be it with an abacus, pen and paper, or just with his brain, is computing and therefore is a computer.A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions. Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated CIRCUITS are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous. The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a mobile PHONE to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.Try reading the next section of that wikipedia article. "The first use of the word "computer" was recorded in 1613, referring to a person who carried out calculations, or computations, and the word continued to be used in that sense until the MIDDLE of the 20th century. From the end of the 19th century onwards though, the word began to take on its more familiar meaning, describing a machine that carries out computations." Quote from: pragma on July 04, 2009, 03:42:55 PM Try reading the next section of that wikipedia article. If I agree will you stop posting? No of course not, but I'll stop hassling you on this subject. Quote from: pragma on July 04, 2009, 04:05:45 PM No of course not, but I'll stop hassling you on this subject.lol good for you! Teach: to help others learn Teacher: a person who teaches. Compute:make a mathematical calculation Computer can be taken to mean "a Person who calculates". The fact that the word has been sodomized into the technical vernacular of PC techs doesn't mean that the word takes on that jargonism in general usage. So I take it people can't compute then? when I say 2+2=4, it's sheer luck that I end up with the same result as a computer; sicne people can't compute. Give me a break. "Compute" basically means to "calculate" so I take it that all cold calculating killers use a computer for the "calculating" bit? Also if the Abacus isn't a computer I'd like to KNOW why it get's a paragraph in my encyclopedia article for "computer". Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 04, 2009, 10:23:06 PM Teach: to help others learn ok I stand corrected. Sorry BC and Pragma you were right.A PC and an Abacus if both left sitting alone with no Human intervention are not calculators or computers... Pass the pipe. Quote from: patio on July 05, 2009, 07:25:57 AM A PC and an Abacus if both left sitting alone with no Human intervention are not calculators or computers... I agreed to seem more accessible. |

REMEMBER, you can't say that the companies want you to become Nazi's, because that's CALLED tainting the sample! don't do it! If you didn't GO out and take a survey, then I'm afraid you are trying to project your own opinions as those of some fictitious set of people. Not cool. because you said, quite certainly, that: Quote PPL ARE NOT GOING TO SIT IN THWIR OWN HOMES WITH THERE WIFE N KIDS(IN MY CASE) N WEAR THEM SILLY GLASSES, EVEN IF THEY LOOKED HALF RESPECTABLE, THEY WOULDN'T DO IT. Now, I may not be an expert on statistics, but simply saying what people will or will not do does not make it accurate. it's still a handwavy assumption that you are using to try to drive some sort of argument that this is a bad idea. It's always best to present facts, not opinions. What you presented was a set of opinion's based entirely on what you believe people will do, not what they actually would do. Did the "big companies" "get it wrong"? nobody can say. What you are presenting is an opinion that they did, without any sort of facts to back it up, just generalizations "people won't do this" and "people won't do that" etc, without any sort of evidence that actually supports your claims about what people will or will not do. personally, I've never liked the whole red/blue steroscopic type thing. I've always thought they were dumb and have a pretty similar opinion on that to yours, but, that's where the similarities stop. At no point to I decide that everybody else regards these things the same way. it only takes a few seconds of real thinking to realize that these technologies have existed for quite some time and it's only by demand from people who actually want them that they remain and grow. And since I neither really much care about it and don't have the resources to actually ask people and find out what they think about it, I, and, you, also, are in no position to say wether the companies are making a "bad move". These "big companies" on the contrary, have these people called analysts who actually talk to people to find out how they regard the technology and what they might do. and would like to see from it. (as opposed to sitting in their house making assumptions about what they think and do). If they didn't think it was lucrative, they would never have attempted it. I'm not apologizing if you found either this or my previous post supercilious or bigoted, because I really don't care what you think. Either keep your opinions to yourself or actually have some facts to back them up if you're going to post it on a forum in some sort of attempt to convince others. And if you don't like the "conflict" that results when opinions clash then don't invite people to the party with a post about it. And then, when you find that there are people in the world that don't hold your exact same opinion and threaten to destroy the very basis of how you came to your original conclusion (everybody thinks like I do) all you have left is an argument to the tone of I am right and the entire industry is wrong. Look at the link. you'll note some similarities between yourself and the gary fellow. Notably: Quote from: stevieboy on June 30, 2010, 03:47:11 AM You have, like the companies got it wrong, as you in time will seeQuote from: gary You will find this out, on this frame issue, as time ensues I suspect you used to be a professor, too. There are a lot of what companies thought were lucrative opportunities scattered all over the place that didn't take of this, in my opinion, is one of them, calm down fella, its only an opinion. I'm sorry you don't take kindly to people on your web site who cant back up their thoughts without any proof, but were would that leave me if I wanted to talk about the after life, I have no proof to back that up, so does that mean Icant talk about it, surely I can give my opinion on it without been told to keep it to my self.where in my posts do I say I didn't like the conflict, if anything, i like the thought of getting you at it, so I must be doing summat right. Dito about your opinions LOTS OV LUV STEVE ( DARN STUCK AGAIN)At this point in time, there is only a limited amount of 3D content, so people with 3D TVs only need to wear the glasses only for limited periods of time, probably to watch movies like Avatar. I don't think that will be a big problem for most people. Today FILMING in 3D is a very complex and costly process (remember Avatar COST something like $500 million to make) so it will be a while before any regular TV shows, or even most movies, are done in 3D.Did you pass English class? I am going to be completely honest: I did not understand a word of what you wrote. If you take a little more time thinking about your ideas, and write them properly, then perhaps people will listen and take you seriously. Quote If you take a little more time thinking about your ideas, and write them properly, then perhaps people will listen and take you seriously. No, probably not. |
