How do i GO about getting my data of the laptop and put it on to another one? probably very simply!

Solve : little horizontal flickering lines on screen?

Answer»

well, i just reinstalled Fallout TACTICS on my pc along with the first two as well. i also installed virtual villager. I have bigger, more graphically intensive games lile Eve: the second genises that i run with no adverse lag or any visual problems, its just these old games. And these 4 programs should have no problem on my system, yet there are many little horizontal lines that either stay on the screen till the picture changes( when new lines apear in new random locations) or they flicker continuously. they are usually white, but vary in color and are around a centimeter wide but only a pixel or 3 tall. but the length varies if i change the screen resolution.

OS: win XP
Graphics card: NVIDIA 8400 GS
Celeron CPU 2.66GHz
1.24 GB RAM

ya i know my computer is a few years old. but it is in great condition and runs great.
its not my monitor as i have 3 and all do the same thing with diferent resolutions and refresh rates.

so, any ideas on how to fix this?DO you know if your V-Sync is set up properly in these games?Ive had similar issues with my Nvidia card.

Basicaly all I have to do is switch the image setting on Nvidia from better or worse. By right clicking Nvidia ICON in the taskbar. Performance and Quality Settings -> Image Settings -> High Performance - High Quality

I'm not sure why but some of my older games needed Nvidia set to a lower/faster quality. Then it all works fine. fast to switch too.

Hope that helps ya.No idea what V-sync is... and its an old game... so it really shouldnt need anything special...

as for the Performance and Quality Settings ... well... i changed the video settings and ... nothing changed.. still little horizontal black lines... and only in those games...

any other ideas?

and please tell me how to do it step by step... i am not too good with this sort of thing... i dont want to mess it up any more than it already is lolany new fix i could try? this is bugging the *censored* out of me...Seems like a graphics problem. When did this start?started a week ago, when i reinstalled these 4 games (all on the same day) i have deleted and reinstalled everything a few times. i increased the screen resolution and refresh rate and now it looks like static.
i know i 'need' a new computer and everything, and i have one, i also have 2 others (a pentium 2 and a pentium 3) that are very slow but useful for what i have them for.

i did replace the graphics card about a year ago. and it has been that long since i have had thase games on this system. but i wouldnt think going from an ATI radion 9250 to my current 8400 would have this much impact  on such a SIMPLE game.

this is almost as bad to figure out as trying to get a DOS game to  run on XP lolIf it is a graphics problem (it is getting worse) does that mean i have to get a new graphics card again??
it wasnt that bad (about $80 to replace and make sure its running) but still... i dont have the $$ to spend on new hardware...

any fix i can do that will get rid of this problem without getting a new graphics card?I found this on Yahoo Answers.
http://in.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090316051949AAeMFiO
Quote from: Silverlight

The 8400GS is not a gaming graphics card and it wont even use the 512MB of RAM thats on it. Whereas a 8600GT or a 9600GT graphics card MIGHT use the full 512MB memory at high resolutions.

its all just a mrketing scheme to make people who do not know a lot about technology think that the 512MB version is better then the 256MB version because they will think that More has to be Better, but this is clearly not the case

As Mark N said, rather get a ATI HD4670 512MB card or a Nvidia 9600GT if you are looking for a gaming card. Else a 256MB 8400GS will be fine for normal usage.

Seems like this could be the problem. I dont know much about GFX cards. Your current card is probably fine but just not powerful enough to run those games. When I said its a graphics problem I simply ment it has something to do with the graphics card or setting.

Not sure if I asked, have you tried re-installing th most current drivers for you card?

Solve : SHUTDOWN FROM WITHIN BIOS?

Answer»

hi all ;

Every now and again I want to shut down  a computer from within the bios stage (ie pre os  - praps it won't load anything ) and I can't find a way  to do it other than the big nasty off switch - have googled for this info & searched site but maybe don't know the right terms to search for. Hopefully theres some  really simple thing i don't know about Anyway, have a good day (even if i don't!) Hit whatever key TAKES you into Setup...then use the appropiate shutdown command...I never recall seeing an actual "Shutdown" or "Turn off" option from within BIOS aka CMOS setup. Personally I've always just hit the power button.  If it's in CMOS setup it's perfectly safe to turn off the computer while it's on, since nothing is being done with the hard disk drive, which is why there is a shutdown option in the first place.F10 is "save changes and Exit"...
Hitting CTRL X key exits.
This is for most popular BIOS's out there Quote from: PATIO on July 23, 2009, 05:16:41 PM

This will suffice for a 'warm boot', if you require a 'cold boot' then the power switch MAY be your only alternative.

Solve : can read burned cd's but nothing else??

Answer»

I've run into a problem...My disc drive does not read anything but cd's I have burned on it. not games, other music or even programs?(Dell Application tools,..or even reinstallation dics) anyone have a CLUE?First suggestion is to clean the CD drive. Get a CLEANING kit that will remove dust and DEBRIS from the laser lens.load the disk and then......right click on the drive its in.....now chose open with........And, after a week, I reply:

I think you may have a misaligned drive (mechanical or electrical).  Reading only what you can write indicates this.

If so, you can repair it for about 5 times the cost of a BRAND spankin' new one.

DellIt looks like we have a hit-and-run.

You are correct about the laser alignment. Writable media has a track built in that the laser can zero in on and use for tracking. Stamped CD's do not have that track. Sometimes cleaning corrects the problem, sometimes you are just SOL.

Solve : system speed?

Answer»

What do you think would be faster?

133 MHz Front Side Bus with a single core 2 GHz processor

Or

100 Mhz Front Side Bus with a dual core 2 GHz processor

Generally speaking, would/could a dual core processor make up for a lacking Front side bus?do you MEAN this side bus

[attachment deleted by admin]Very helpful Harry...........

BlockHEAD, I believe the dual core processor would be a better choice.

Think of it, one instruction at a time or two instructions simultaneously.I'd agree dual core.Agreed -- which is easy to do -- but especially since the bus speeds, in this instance, are not that great a difference.

As long as the software is making use of the dual cores, that's a huge advantage. The dual core, but wouldnt a 2GHZ dual core have a higher FSB then that?  Like 800 or 1066? Quote from: computeruler on July 23, 2009, 11:45:49 AM

but wouldnt a 2ghz dual core have a higher fsb then that?  Like 800 or 1066?
Irrelevant. That's not the question. some old slot A motherboards had two CPU slots. it was labelled "for testing only" but you could install a second CPU in it. You needed NT to use multiple processors back then, though. Were discussing two entirely seperate things here...
Processer speed/cycles...
And FSB speeds.

The CPU being dual core will obviously do things faster...
But it will be limited by the bus speeds so it's hard to say without bench-testing both machines.I suppose in reality, the two systems you are comparing, like patio was saying, there is a lot more to figure in, than what was in my two pretend computers
ie. ram/cpu ratio, fsb speed, single core vs multi-core, and of COURSE what Aegis was TALKING about, whether your apps are written to take advantage of a multi-core processor......like hyper threading, apps must be written to take advantage of it

..more over, what the system is generally being used for....   A gamers system is obviously going to need more computing power than some secretary's OEM desktop.

but in my pretend example, I guess the dual core wins!

Maybe I should have made the argument more interesting and made the two puters like this:

200 MHz FSB, single core, 2 GHz processor

VS

100 MHz FSB, dual core, 2 GHz processor

I doubt there are many multi-core systems with an fsb of 100 MHz, although I have heard of them...

Solve : Am I missing something to run .exe files??

Answer»

I can't open some .exe FILES. I'm trying to install some drivers on a PC with xp, but for some reason when I click on the setup.exe file, nothing happens, it doesn't open or run anything. I thought that the driver was corrupted, but I tried to install that same driver on another pc with xp and it worked.  I tried to install something else, at first the little window showing all the files that are being STALLED shows for a second or 2, then it disapears, it doesn't complete the installation. I should get a message saying that the installation is complete, but I do not get the message and I don't get any error messages, it just does nothing. Someone suggested me to update the ms installer and to update net frameworks to the latest version, I did what was suggested, but I still get the same problem.  I'm sure i'ts not a virus or SPYWARE because I just made a fresh install of xp and I haven't gone online with that pc and I haven't downloaded anything from the net, even before making the fresh install, I didn't have any viruses or spyware.  It seems that for some reason I'm not able to install certain programs, because I can open  and run other .exe files with no problem.  Could I be missimg a dll or an ocx or something else that's preventing me from running or installing certain .exe files? Your help wll be greatly appreciated.  By the way, I have windows xp pro sp 2 on that pc. What driver is this that will not install ? ?

Solve : Missing DVD player & CD/DVD writer?

Answer»

Hello All, Can someone help me please, i,m using xp home, and have had a dvd player and a cd/dvd player on the SYSTEM for a while and had no probs with them, now they won't work?, they don't even show in "my computer", i looked in device manager and a ? mark is on them, so i checked the drivers and no probs i think, but the system can't find the hardware for them, please can you help me, it's really wierd    UKfriendsUK.......Well , I would try this .....shut down the pc .......open it up and unplug both the cd and dvd drives ......remove both the 4 PIN power cables and the IDE CABLE ....... now reboot the pc .......and be sure there is no referance to either still listed ...... Then shut down  ...... and plug back in whichever drive is set as the master .......connect the power supply as well as the IDE cable ......now start up and you should see the message ...new hardware detected....then you should see the message that the new hardware has been successfully installed and is ready for use ........then do the same thing with the second drive ( the slave )

let us know how you make out .

dl65  UKfriendsUK.....I read your PM ..........when you removed ( uninstalled) the drives in question and UNPLUGGED them .........was there any referance to them in the device manager ?
Next , when you reconnected them 1 at a time , and rebooted , did you GET the message that windows had detected new hardware ?
If they werent detected , its possible that the IDE cable may be loose at the MOBO end or the IDE cable itself may be faulty .......
Are the optical drives on the primary or secondary IDE cable ?

Solve : Need advice on buying an LCD monitor.?

Answer»

Hey folks, 2nd post on the forums here for me.  Impressed with the fast replies my first topic already got.  I was looking into buying a new gaming PC and I have (probably) settled on http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227146

Well, now my question is, how do I go about getting a monitor to compliment it?  I still have a boxy, 15" contraption taking up half my computer DESK at the moment, I need something to bring out the "goodness" in that new computer.  I know absolutely nothing about LCD monitors, and from what little I've read, it SEEMS the specs can be deceiving, or outright marketing gimmicks that might be true on paper but really don't hold up in actual performance.

Not looking to spend much on a monitor, I don't need a massive display, just something that performs well for games and movies.  I can deal with an inability to swivel every which WAY.  I just browsed CNET a BIT, watching their reviews and came up with

http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/gateway-hd1900/4505-3174_7-33192341.html
$129.99

http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/hp-2009m/4505-3174_7-33557215.html
$139.99

Any ADVICE would be much appreciated, no sense in buying a new computer if I can't enjoy some of its razzmatazz.Acer Monitors are well built and competively priced...
Make sure to include them in your search...

Solve : recommended OS for a new build?

I'm thinking of getting OEM Vista 64 bit with upgrade to W-7 for a brand new pc I built.  Any DOWNSIDES to going with OEM that anyone knows of?No drawbacks i can think of...
Read This First...That's enticing.  Do you know if that METHOD of installing is still valid?Yep...just did one.Hot off the press as it were.

Are upgrade vista versions available that include the W/7 upgrade when it comes out?
Where did you shop for your upgrade version? As far as i know 1 is not being BUNDLED with any Vista product...
Some RETAILERS are selling new machines that ship with Vista and qualify for a free Win7 upgrade when it's released...

If you can find a GOOD deal on Vista that's another option.

The Win7 Pre-Order pricing is very attractive...Thanks. I bought vista with a W-7 upgrade for $109.That's a steal ! !
Nicely Done...

Hope it wasn't eBay though...Nope, neweggExcellent !
Congrats and Welcome to CH !I recommend you just purchase Windows 7 and in the meanwhile, use the RC. I also recommend you use a Retail copy because if your PC breaks, Windows can be installed on another computer, instead of buying a new copy.An OEM liscense can still be valid with a MBoard/CPU replacement...no need for a full priced Retail liscense...

Solve : Need advice on buying a (pre-packaged) "Gaming" Computer.?

Answer»

Hi folks, first time for me to these forums.  Just found them while reading some computer reviews, hope I can get some help here before I take the financial plunge.

I've finally decided to turn in my old clunker , Dell Dimension 4550, Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHZ, 1 GB RAM, GeForce FX 5500 (VGA).  It was trustworthy and held together through some hard times and good games (though I probably would have been better off had it not been able to run World of Warcraft   ).  While I can say that I've cracked open a few computer cases in my time to "fiddle around" and plug in some "gizmos," I'd much rather get a package rather than buy it piecemeal.  Putting together my own PC isn't something I want to tackle.

I don't have my heart set on running any certain game at the moment (heck, I'm playing Baldur's Gate 1 from 1998), but I wouldn't mind trying Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Mass Effect, and Mirror's Edge to name a few.  I know just for laughs I tried Oblivion on my current "rig" and it ran like a power point slide show

I'd say $1500 is my price range, give or take a few hundred.  After spooking around a bit I found these two computers that, to my UNTRAINED eyes, look decent.  Was hoping to get some educated feedback on them.

Also, on a semi-related TOPIC, if/when I get a new computer, I'll also pick up a new monitor to replace the 15" screen housed in a giant box which is currently taking up half of my computer desk.  What should I look for in a monitor?  If my knowledge of computer hardware is limited, my knowledge of monitors is nonexistent.I like that second one.  Much better then the gateway. Quote from: computeruler on July 24, 2009, 04:45:04 PM

I like that second one.  Much better then the gateway.

Seconded  Really, I dont think your going to find a better computer for that price anywhere I guess http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883227146 is promising so far.  I've talked to a few people that have shopped at New Egg and were satisfied customers, so I'm not too wary of that.

The user reviews are pretty darn good, the only complaints being that the dvd drive power cord is unplugged upon arrival, causing some initial confusion (Thankfully my limited computer prowess should be sufficient in plugging in a cord)

And  overheating when overclocked is an issue (but room available for more fans).  I've never dabbled with overclocking, wouldn't even know where to begin or if it is worthwhile, so not an issue for me.  The customer reviews make it sound easy to do, and the addition of a back fan also simple, so maybe that could give me something to PLAY around with later on.Yes newegg is the bestestestest site for computer stuff.  Of course it will overheat when overclocked, because it has a stock fan.If you pick machine #2 i see no reason to overclock...

But to each his own.

Carry on...Overclocking is funnnn.  Im going to be doing it soon! Quote from: computeruler on July 25, 2009, 09:52:02 AM

Solve : CAN'T ACCESS WORLD CLIENT SERVER?

Answer»

Hi. I have the server's IP that I have been ACCESSING for many years now - but recently, after a computer crash - and then reboot - i have not been able to ACCESS it. I would previously type in http://XX.XX.XXX.XXX:XXXX and then a world CLIENT interface would come up where i could enter my log on details, etc, and access my emails. Now i GET a cannot display page on IE8 and Safari 4. I have enabled SSL and TLS protocols like suggested by IE but to no success. I have also tried disabling firewall and allowing exceptions to the server ^^. I have tried going on the World Client site and entering email address and password, but "log on details are incorrect" when I know they haven't been changed - can anybody help me!?!

Thanks. ChrisHave you tried the site from another machine ? ?And have you re-checked the IP Address of the computer?^^^^^ Yes, i can access my emails through outlook at work.

Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 26, 2009, 12:02:23 PM

And have you re-checked the IP Address of the computer?

umm no i haven't - can you elaborate on this please?

also - I am TRYING to access the world client server by using the same IP address that I have always used - and I am not aware that outlook accesses a different address at work. I think the problem maybe on my locally.

Thank you for your replies. Chris

Solve : Alternative to MS Virtual PC & VirtualBox?

Answer»

I'm looking for an alternative to Virtual PC and VirtualBox.

The main thing I want it to do is be able to run Classic Mac & and OSX operating systems as a guest.

Any suggestions?Classic Mac won't run on the same emulator as a OSX or x86 emulator. the architectures are different.Okay, If you could recommend a virtual machine app that could just run Mac Classic or just Mac OSX, that would also be okay.

I just want a virtualization program that can run any Mac system as a guest.I have no idea; I'd search for Mac emulators. Each Mac has a different ROM, and that ROM is integrally knit in with the OS itself; the ROM would be illegal to download (but possible) as would the OS floppies/discs.I found this which looks good (tell me what you think):
http://oreilly.com/windows/archive/PearPC.html

This programs emulates the PowerPC, and successfully ran:
Mac OS X 10.3
Mandrake Linux 9.1 for PPC
Darwin for PPC

I'm figuring that if emulates the PPC it may run Mac OS Classic.VMWare Workstation will allow you to install OS X: http://wiki.osx86project.org/wiki/index.php/Vmware_how_to, or Leopard: http://bush1do.deviantart.com/art/How-to-Leopard-on-VMWare-79611416hmm, I did not know that.

WHY did I switch to virtual PC again? Quote from: BC_Programmer on July 26, 2009, 09:25:00 AM

hmm, I did not know that.

WHY did I switch to virtual PC again?
Yeah, I no longer USE MS Virtual PC anymore because:
1. lack of USB support
2. does not work good with Linux (I never could get Ubuntu & Mandriva to run)
3. Unchangeable amount of Video RAM
4. Does not support any Host besides Windows 2000 SP4, XP or Vista

I SWITCHED to Sun Virtual Box because it fix these problems
1. Virtual Box has full USB support including booting from Pen Drvie
2. Full Linux, BSD and Solaris support for guest (including guest additions)
3. adjustable video RAM, Virtual PC does not give you this option. So with VB i can choose for my VM to have any amount of video ram I want
4. Can run on most Windows OS's as well as on Linux (which is handy because i'm switching to Ubuntu)

Haven't tried VMWare but I guess I will be now I have VMWare, very excellent. I think I switched to Virtual PC for some dumb REASON that MAKES no sense.I've been using VMWare on my desktop, and on my laptop for a while. Flawless...does VMWare work on Linux?yes. there is a VMWare for Linux.

That's good. What kind of file does it use for the HDD? A .vhd, .vdi or something else?

I figured out when switching from Virtual PC to VirtualBox, I could just change .vhd (virtual PC HDD file) to a .vdi (VB HDD file). It worked good on them all so far except the windows 2000 ONE has a display problem becuase it's using the wrong driver.vmware uses vmdk... I'm not sure if the format is the same as any of the others, though.

I'm not sure, but it might be able to use a vhd. Broni might know a bit more about this.Nope. I haven't tried to install Linux yet.
They have pretty nice forum at VMW. They'll surely tell you.

Solve : Computer History?

Answer»

A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.

The abacus does not qualify.Actually a computer is something that performs mathematical calculations.
The first computers were human:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer#History_of_computing

But still, the abacus probably doesn't qualify. But a human with an abacus would. Quote from: pragma on JULY 04, 2009, 02:35:09 PM

Yes Quote from: pragma on July 04, 2009, 03:23:47 PM
Yes

No there human. You don't seem to get that the term computer is older than the electronic machines we today call computers. Up to the early 20th century a computer was a human being. They were essentially made obsolete by the very thing that also took over their name, electronic computers.

But that doesn't change the fact that even today, a human doing calculations, be it with an abacus, pen and paper, or just with his brain, is computing and therefore is a computer.A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a set of instructions.

Although mechanical examples of computers have existed through much of recorded human history, the first electronic computers were developed in the mid-20th century (1940–1945). These were the size of a large room, consuming as much power as several hundred modern personal computers (PCs). Modern computers based on integrated CIRCUITS are millions to billions of times more capable than the early machines, and occupy a fraction of the space. Simple computers are small enough to fit into a wristwatch, and can be powered by a watch battery. Personal computers in their various forms are icons of the Information Age and are what most people think of as "computers". The embedded computers found in many devices from MP3 players to fighter aircraft and from toys to industrial robots are however the most numerous.

The ability to store and execute lists of instructions called programs makes computers extremely versatile, distinguishing them from calculators. The Church–Turing thesis is a mathematical statement of this versatility: any computer with a certain minimum capability is, in principle, capable of performing the same tasks that any other computer can perform. Therefore computers ranging from a mobile PHONE to a supercomputer are all able to perform the same computational tasks, given enough time and storage capacity.Try reading the next section of that wikipedia article.
"The first use of the word "computer" was recorded in 1613, referring to a person who carried out calculations, or computations, and the word continued to be used in that sense until the MIDDLE of the 20th century. From the end of the 19th century onwards though, the word began to take on its more familiar meaning, describing a machine that carries out computations." Compute:make a mathematical calculation

Computer can be taken to mean "a Person who calculates". The fact that the word has been sodomized into the technical vernacular of PC techs doesn't mean that the word takes on that jargonism in general usage.

So I take it people can't compute then? when I say 2+2=4, it's sheer luck that I end up with the same result as a computer; sicne people can't compute.

Give me a break. "Compute" basically means to "calculate" so I take it that all cold calculating killers use a computer for the "calculating" bit?

Also if the Abacus isn't a computer I'd like to KNOW why it get's a paragraph in my encyclopedia article for "computer".

Solve : How old is your Windows?

Answer»

Just wondering if 95 or 98 is still in use? In this poll I don't mean that computer that has sat in the basement for 5 years to count it has to be used ad least once a month. I be the first to spill i still run 95 on a laptop.  Staying with good ol', STABLE Win 2K!

Until Win 7 comes out, and see how it does.I do for the most part, I have programs that are OLD enough that I need it to be there.  I am tring to fix a few of the issues but I am using it on ME....Still running 98 on virtual partition..I have- a PC-DOS 7 laptop with windows 3.1 that I usually fire up at least once a month for one reason or another.

Seems to be having issues now, though.

My other laptop isn't fired up near as often- (although around a year and a half ago I used it almost all the time), it has windows 98SE, 144MB of RAM and a 133Mhz Pentium.

the LCD is the crappy passive matrix kind.  works for the most part, hasn't been able to read my burned CDS for the last while, but I believe it's an issue with the brands...

MAYBE the poll should use checkboxes?I had tried vista for a week or two, but it destroyed my new computer, but when I went back to xp, everything worked just fine again!I still have Toshiba desktop with 98 on it, and Compaq with Win2K. Both in working condition, but in the closet, since I find using virtual Windows much more handy to use, if I need some reference.

Mr. paudashlake
This is a bull....LOL...nothing wrong with Vista
BTW, we're talking about OLD OSes here...heheheheI agree, in fact with my laptop it's quite the opposite- neither XP install allows suspend mode to recover- and the 2Ghz Processors stay at 16mhz or some other ridiculously low value.

Works 100% fine in vista though."Still running 98 on virtual partition.."
I guess that counts.
I've got Windows 2000 on my crappy old Dell. I use it every few weeks.
Have got Win 98 on another computer.Yep Win 98 on a computer I just built for someone else.

I have a set of Original Install disks for Windows 98 on 3 1/2 floppy's ..... all 38 of them Hahahaha. I remember windows 95 came on 14 floppies, I think. I think you had to actually request floppies for windows 98, though. Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on April 06, 2009, 09:17:12 PM

Then I need to install Windows 3.0 if that works. Does that have a formatting UTILITY on it?You will first have to install DOS before you can load Win3.
DOS has a formatting utility. If the hard drive crashed (as in died), it is still dead. If it is still functional you could be  oK. Download a DOS BOOTDISK and see if you can FORMAT it (www.bootdisk.com) Without a FULL version of DOS you cannot proceed further, but you will know what you are up against.

You have, like the companies got it wrong, as you in time will see

I did pose several questions (ignoring the last part about otters wearing monocles and stuff) such as:

Quote
have you taken a survey? what were your results? REMEMBER, you can't say that the companies want you to become Nazi's, because that's CALLED tainting the sample! don't do it! If you didn't GO out and take a survey, then I'm afraid you are trying to project your own opinions as those of some fictitious set of people. Not cool.

because you said, quite certainly, that:

Quote
PPL ARE NOT GOING TO SIT IN THWIR OWN HOMES WITH THERE WIFE N KIDS(IN MY CASE) N WEAR THEM SILLY GLASSES, EVEN IF THEY LOOKED HALF RESPECTABLE, THEY WOULDN'T DO IT.

Now, I may not be an expert on statistics, but simply saying what people will or will not do does not make it accurate. it's still a handwavy assumption that you are using to try to drive some sort of argument that this is a bad idea. It's always best to present facts, not opinions. What you presented was a set of opinion's based entirely on what  you believe people will do, not what they actually would do.

Did the "big companies" "get it wrong"? nobody can say. What you are presenting is an opinion that they did, without any sort of facts to back it up, just generalizations "people won't do this" and "people won't do that" etc, without any sort of evidence that actually supports your claims about what people will or will not do. personally, I've never liked the whole red/blue steroscopic type thing. I've always thought they were dumb and have a pretty similar opinion on that to yours, but, that's where the similarities stop. At no point to I decide that everybody else regards these things the same way. it only takes a few seconds of real thinking to realize that these technologies have existed for quite some time and it's only by demand from people who actually want them that they remain and grow. And since I neither really much care about it and don't have the resources to actually ask people and find out what they think about it, I, and, you, also, are in no position to say wether the companies are making a "bad move".

These "big companies" on the contrary, have these people called analysts who actually talk to people to find out how they regard the technology and what they might do. and would like to see from it. (as opposed to sitting in their house making assumptions about what they think and do). If they didn't think it was lucrative, they would never have attempted it.

I'm not apologizing if you found either this or my previous post supercilious or bigoted, because I really don't care what you think. Either keep your opinions to yourself or actually have some facts to back them up if you're going to post it on a forum in some sort of attempt to convince others. And if you don't like the "conflict" that results when opinions clash then don't invite people to the party with a post about it. And then, when you find that there are people in the world that don't hold your exact same opinion and threaten to destroy the very basis of how you came to your original conclusion (everybody thinks like I do) all you have left is an argument to the tone of I am right and the entire industry is wrong.

Look at the link. you'll note some similarities between yourself and the gary fellow. Notably:

I suspect you used to be a professor, too.

There are a lot of what companies thought were lucrative opportunities scattered all over the place that didn't take of this, in my opinion, is one of them, calm down fella, its only an opinion. I'm sorry you don't take kindly to people on your web site who cant back up their thoughts without any proof, but were would that leave me if I wanted to talk about the after life, I have no proof to back that up, so does that mean Icant talk about it, surely I can give my opinion on it without been told to keep it to my self.where in my posts do I say I didn't like the conflict, if anything, i like the thought of getting you at it, so I must be doing summat right. Dito about your opinions LOTS OV LUV STEVE ( DARN STUCK AGAIN)At this point in time, there is only a limited amount of 3D content, so people with 3D TVs only need to wear the glasses only for limited periods of time, probably to watch movies like Avatar.  I don't think that will be a big problem for most people.

Today FILMING in 3D is a very complex and costly process (remember Avatar COST something like $500 million to make) so it will be a while before any regular TV shows, or even most movies, are done in 3D.Did you pass English class?

select one icon.
Ctrl+A to select all.
Ctrl+C to copy them.
browse to where you want to copy them to and Ctrl+P to paste them.
That will only copy the icons...if he needs them to be WORKABLE shortcuts thats a different story.a lot of people store data on the desktop (for some reason) so some icons may simply be shortcuts and some may actually be folders, or Word docs or who KNOWS...

Well, I was thinking about Star trek for a while, and I realized, you know how their always using they communicators, well, how come it never seems to happen that their on the can or something? I can see it.

Riker: Riker to Picard
Picard: Just a moment, Number one. I'm just finishing up a number 2 here

Also, I was thinking, It's kind of funny watching them USE their computers. It's interesting how reestablishing a containment field takes the same keystrokes as REPLICATING a cup of coffee. Guess they involve similar semantics. Or perhaps the fictional designers decided, hmm, it's the core of the ENTIRE ship... we better include a coffee maker.

Anyway, I was thinking, they should bring it back, and I'd write the episodes. They would be completely believable. I can see it, they'll all be reminiscing or something, and then data will be all,

"I'm quick. The only downside is I randomly betray you for reasons beyond my control. Remember that time I almost killed you all, my brother lohr was all, 'you dudes is food for the crystal entity' and I was all, shut off. Oh wait, I was shut off, so I guess it wasn't my fault after all. Well I feel much better then. SPOT! come here. Now replicator, create feline supplement 41."

"Hey! *censored*? this is coffee. I mean, how unusual. This is coffee."

spot: meow.

"*censored* YOU NOISY BEAST! *throws against wall*

pure genius. I'd remember to follow the whole formula set down previously, but I'd make them learn from previous experiences.

"We can take hundreds of hits from powerful weaponry, but stay away from that seemingly innocent asteroid. It's giving off some form or RADIATION or beam that we pretty much made up on the spot, that will have the added ability to shut down all our core systems, except somehow artificial gravity is fine.

Of course, what season would be complete without a twist turn. Data's LOYAL companion, spot, takes control of the ship, him and his feline friends pilot the good ship tunafish in search of... well, cat toys. Of course, they have their own share of troubles:

"Captain spot, our warp core is going all breechy. Also, we're out of coffee. And send some milk, I'm thirsty."

"oh NO! are you serious? we're out of coffee? NOOOOOO! if we run out of coffee, the dogs have won! don't you get it?"

"actually, no. None of this makes any sense."

*SLAP* "get ahold of yourself!"

and of course, there's nothing like cliffhangers...

Previously, on Star Trek: tunafish...

Oh no! if the brig forcefields fail, we'll have dogs running loose. We can keep them up by rerouting power from the replicator system, but that means we'll need to go without coffee!

...

"Spot... you know I love you... it's just"...

"There's another cat, isn't there, Doctor smokey?"

...

"Alright ensign kibbles, just cut the blue wire, and we'll all be able to make coffee."

"erm... there is no blue wire."

"Oh, sorry. I'm looking at the wrong diagram.. let's see here. ha, never can find stuff when you need it... Ahh, here it is."

"Ok, got it- you need to drag out some CDEVs from the computers main control panel. That's causing the conflict."

"ok. hey wait a second, I don't have opposable thumbs, I cannot grasp the mouse."

"well, I hope your proud of yourself kibbles. you killed us all. Also, I just noticed, that if I look at this diagram upside down, it looks mike a mousey."

Classics. Definitely memorable episode transcripts.

Solve : Want to recover my D-Drive?

Answer»

I downloaded Ubunti a while BACK.  Then I changed my mind on were I want to do it.  I then lost my D-drive in the computer.  It is gone.   The hard drive is in the computer, but it doesn't show up at all

Does anyone now what I can do to GET it back, without taking the computer to a technician  and paying to have this done.
Well, you may have made D drive to a Linux type. Windows does not mount Linux drives. If you go into the disk MANAGER you will SEE it as a unknown type. You can change it to a NTFS type. With a format that will erase all your DATA, that is.Is there a way I can get the data off the d-drive first.
I have an external hard drive that I can put all of the stuff.http://www.ubuntugeek.com/how-to-read-ext3ext4-linux-partition-from-windows-7.html
This may help.

Solve : opening internet links from email?

Answer»

I deleted some programs I don't use (or didn't think I used) AOL and Safari.  Now I can't open links from Outlook.  When i try it says opening the LINK is not allowed, see the administrator.  Well, I'm the administrator but I don't know what to do.  Help, pleaseJust to clarify do you MEAN "outlook" or "outlook express". What about in other e-mail clients such as hotmail or G-mail? truenorthI use Outlook, now express.  I had not tried gmail until just now and it works, i.e., I can click on a link in an email and go directly to that link on the internet. To clarify, (I can't TYPE).  I use Outlook, not Outlook Express and gmail links work. Are you using the latest version of outlook? If not update it that may fix the issue.truenorth
P.S. Take a look here to see if you have the most recent version.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_Outlook
Outlook is a component of Microsoft Office and is thus version specific. If i might inquire why do you chose outlook over outlook express?will try updating Outlook.  Have used Outlook for years, like the presentation better than express.  Thanks for your help. It's what we try to do. Please come back and TELL us if things improved if you are able to update your Outlook (look for updates that may have been part of a Microsoft Office update pertinent to Outlook) truenorth
