Solve : PM Issues? |
|
Answer» Yeah, i did qoute Salmons post, i think you had just deleted the one i was replying to as i was replying and i didn't CHECK properly until i'd already posted. My reply was to ginger96 who is still watching the thread, as it happens. Hey ho.Ryuk you are right on Facebook I did say that I couldn't see wrong with the account. However, it's obviously been a PROBLEM, so I really dove into the security settings. Sure enough there was a very hidden security setting that I obviously overlooked. The setting AFFECTED all users in the "Intermediate" member group. I had the rights for that intermediate group linked to the regular member group, making it hidden in the permissions list, causing me to miss the fact that there were missing permissions for that group. The missing permissions included the innabililty to send and receive PM's. The issue should now be resolved and thanks for having the PATIENCE in sticking with me while I tried LOCATING the cause of the problem.umm.......... Your welcome |

Solve : Forum time is wrong for non-US users? |
|
Answer» I see that the displayed time of my posts is 1 hour ahead of my local time. I know that many parts of the US and possessions (not Arizona, Puerto Rico, Hawaii, U.S. Virgin Islands and American Samoa) WENT over to Daylight Time this weekend. However, in most of Europe we won't do so until 01:00 UTC on March 25th. Belarus, Iceland and Russia don't change clocks. So I have to adjust my forum time setting twice this month. |

Solve : Hexadecimal to ASCII? |
|
Answer» Could you look up the Belkin manual and see what the default username and password is? Use that to gain entry to the router. Now the only issue is it now says What says it is disconnected? Quote Could not log on so I converted the password from ASCII toDon't we have a contradiction here? If converting "the password from ASCII to Hexadecimal" worked, then why can't you connect? How can say it worked when you still can't connect? Can you post the computer model and operating system next time? Did it worked before or not?I'd still like to know what Hexadecimal and ASCII have to do with this. Can anyone explain? I BELIEVE it nothing to do with setting passwords in a router or computer for a wireless connection. If I'm right, then the OP simply has some invalid notion about this in her mind. The OP did not say, but some wireless setup software ASKS if you want to do ASCII or hexadecimal. Which is enough to even trow a curve to experienced users. Here is a reference about the current and prior sates of wireless security and why users are fining is hard to understand. Myself included. Why didn't hey get it right to first time? Second time? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wireless_securityIf you have problems understanding wireless security, you should have an expert set it up for you, Geek. |

"OK, good eye robin, but let's look a little closer, gas isn't cheap." "Good news! the burglar is coming this way!" "On foot, Robin! Let's go!" *they chase after him, he goes into a theme park* "Excuse me, you need to pay admission" "But.... that guy holding the purse didn't pay admission!" Solve : HP NETSERVER LH II Client?? |
|
Answer» I have a HP NETSERVER LH II, the thing will boot too Netware 4.11. Thing is that I got this from a radio station an the music was backed up too it. I need to see if there is anything worth keeping. Supposeably netware PARTITONS cant be really read in windows. I was probably going to put a copy of Windows Server 03 on the one DRIVE an store the orginal boot drive then. I figured setting up a netware client should ALLOW me too see what is on the drives. I just want to make sure before I formated the drives. Also, would the INSTALL take up the first two drives? You have already started 2 Topics on this used PC... |

Solve : I moved my computer and now it won't work!? |
|
Answer» I just moved my computer from the basement to the kitchen and when I plugged everything back in its doesnt work. Ive triple checked to make sure everything so plugged into the right place but all I get is the TOWER fan running on HIGH and a really fast beep. Monitor says its in analog SLEEP mode. Help?!?Probably knocked something loose, reseat the RAM and expansion cards. The monitor is not getting a signal, so the messages beind displayed (analog sleep mode) shouldn't be anything to worry about. If you did move it, as long as you didn't bang at against anything too hard or drop it, you should be able to get it working again. I agree something probably did come LOSE. If you are comfortable doing so, I would open up the SIDE, and make sure everything is pressed firmly into position (cables, memory, anything that is in a slot.) You may also want to check for any excess dust, and see if you can blow it out as sometimes that can cause issues. |

Solve : Better Android Phone in 2012?? |
|
Answer» Will the Android Phone market aha something great inf 2012? HTC One X SpecsThat outperforms Desktops and Laptops I have five years ago. Except for the display. But I expect more. Maybe I will wait for a bigger screen. Wait. Thar's more: Quote Samsung Galaxy S3 SpecsThe support different carriers caught my eye. That is a consideration. Do the link above for more. Moderator, if you don't like me putting stuff like this in 'other' just scram and holler out load. My question: I want a new phone. But should I wait until NEXT year? http://hothardware.com/Reviews/Asus-Eee-Pad-Transformer-Prime-Preview/?page=7 The Tegra 3 has a Texture fillrate of 0.4 GPixels/sec. That's equal to the integrated graphics of the nForce 630a(GeForce 7025) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tegra Some sources even claim that the Tegra 3 is faster than a Core 2 Duo T7200....Wow. If you're a multimedia junkie it might be worth the wait to a more powerful GPU that can output to an external screen at resolutions higher than the phone's HD screen-the GeForce 7025 slightly struggles at 1280x720 (from my own experience) with really lightweight games such as Cube 2: Sauerbraten and occasionally do videos stutter if there is a lot of motion. My comparison may not be entirely valid though, do note that the 7025 is old tech-released in June 2005; the Tegra 3 may support various new features that accelerate performance-I looked at a Samsung Galaxy Note (powered by a http://www.arm.com/products/multimedia/mali-graphics-hardware/mali-400-mp.php 0.3-1.1 GPixels) the other day at a store and played a Gameloft FPS shooter and man were the graphics stunning on the 720p screen. Absolutely no lag whatsoever. The screen was so crisp and lickable, too. Let's hold on for a while and see what the mobile department has to offer, though, note that even the old PowerVR SGX545 with a fillrate of 1 GPixels/sec should in theory outrun the Tegra 3. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5163/asus-eee-pad-transformer-prime-nvidia-tegra-3-review/3 Oh actually the SGX543 does. So I would say don't buy the Tegra 3 for entertainment purposes. For business purposes, like viewing documents, doing some quick photo annotating and the like, perhaps. http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2011/2/21/why-nvidiae28099s-tegra-3-is-faster-than-a-core-2-duo-t7200.aspx The benchmark results are skewed-The Tegra 3 runs GCC 4.4 with optimizations whereas the T7200 runs GCC 3.3 without optimizations. http://blog.laptopmag.com/nvidia-tegra-3-benchmarks-beat-apples-a5-chip-hands-down One of the comments: Quote You're forgetting one big factor: floating-point performance.Transfusion, thinks or the reply. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 04, 2012, 04:52:05 AM Intel or ARM? Hard to say. It is not about MPS. If the battery will not last six hours, you can't use it.Yeah I agree. When the battery is dead it doesn't matter if you have the latest quad-core. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 04, 2012, 04:52:05 AM There is more news coming. Word is the new phones will all be "ice cream sandwich" Aneroid 4.0 right out of the box. Quad cores. 1 GB RAM. And there are other players besides ARM. Android and Linux are packages the migrate well to other CPUs.Don't forget Windows 8, which has ARM support; here's a video of a beta build of it running on a Tegra 3 tablet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWOOefm_rwo Competitors to ARM and Intel's Medfield? Well the only thing I can think of is MIPS, which does decently in the low-end tablet market: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2398778,00.asp It has the same compatibility rate for normal Android apps as does Medfield. Yeah Ice Cream Sandwich will soon fuse the gap between phone and tablet-I still see tablet versions of apps floating around the Android Market, in the future this may save developers time. Now they are saying a quad core does better of performance power thing. Here is a new PR story: http://www.tomshardware.com/news/qualcomm-arm-chips-s4-lte,14842.html When I first heard of quad core on a hand held device, I though it was a joke. No a joke. MFLOPS is not a meaningful measure of performance of a consumer device. A lot of stuff does not require floating point. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FLOPS Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 04, 2012, 10:03:41 AM A lot of stuff does not require floating point.http://blogs.arm.com/multimedia/547-at-home-on-the-range-why-floating-point-formats-matter-in-graphics/ From what I understand, floating point numbers allow the system to do arithmetic computations with greater accuracy through the use of exponents to place a decimal point; fixed point operations usually return inaccurate data when fractions are involved. There are FPUs, also known as "coprocessors," in all our consumer CPUs right now. Clearly with game graphics getting more advanced I wouldn't want any pixels out of place. I don't want my Crysis 2 experience ending up like Duck Hunt. Also: http://howtomakeelectronicmusic.com/mixing-tip-use-32-bit-floating-point-format-to-avoid-clipping I would also assume that floating-point operations are employed in music making so as to reproduce what the artist originally wanted the audience to hear. There is a lot of distortion when I disable 32-bit float wave in FL Studio. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 04, 2012, 10:03:41 AM When I first heard of quad core on a hand held device, I though it was a joke. No a joke.Yeah its pretty amazing when you think of the old clumsy tech of the past; the (all lousy) 3dfx Voodoo3, the Voodoo 5 with dual graphics which couldn't beat its equivalent competitors, the nVidia GeForce FX5200, the ATi Rage Fury MAXX, the Trident cards... then we have the CPUs, the simply awful Cyrix chips that were the result of reverse-engineering Intel's chips...OK about the Floating point thing. I may have spoke out of turn. For scientific applications, precision and accuracy are put before overall performance. All things that have to do with human perception do not require great precision in many cases. Notice how in a movie the will use low light levels and fast nation to confuse the eye. The same scent in slow motion with full light of day would show the flaws. Using 32 bit fixed point computations is so much faster that loading point. If you know the upper and lower boundaries ahead of time, the long integer data type can be used in applications where there is already some historical data that lies inside boundaries. Inn other words, not so big and not so small. So if you send a probe to the dark side of a planet that you have never studied before, your want that probe to be able to handle a very wide range of real numbers. So you will not use your smartphone for that. Quote ...Long variables can range from -2,147,483,648 to 2,147,483,647.Your best display device does not have hat order of pixel products. I think. A triad of RBG dots could have a range of 24 bits, three bytes. That is beyond the ability of the human eye to identify levels in a lighted room. In a custom built system just for consumer electronics, an engineer might do a design the uses 40 bits as a long integer. Then there would be not point in using float. BTW; in RISC design there is such a thing as a ten bit 'byte' so that 40 bits would be just 4 'bytes'. What I am saying is the chip makers do not need to design stuff for the academic community. They will aim at the consumers . Do you know how many Android phones have been sold? A lot, but does not require a floating point number. Quote from: Geek-9pm on March 04, 2012, 11:33:40 AM OK about the Floating point thing. I may have spoke out of turn.Ah, I see. If you already know the limits you probably won't assign arbitrary numbers. Now with HD screens coming into play I definitely won't be able to see the difference between any singe pixel. I was under the impression that entire sprites would be distorted if we didn't employ enough precision. Quote I was under the impression that entire sprites would be distorted if we didn't employ enough precision.Correct. the float gives you range. Very small number can be represented with no lose of accuracy. But if you know how small is small, you can work around the limitation. Example: You have a digital multimeter, or even an old analog, with just one scale, 0 to 100 volts. The precision of the meter is given as better than or equal to 1% full scale. But that means plus or minus one volt. at 95 volts it is a very good voltmeter. But when you go to measure 5 volts you have a problem. There is no decimal point. It says 5 volts. But that really means over 4 volts but less that 6 volts. That is withing the given spec for the meter. That is why voltmeters should have a rang range selector. And there are alternative forms of floating pint. You can do a 24 bit floating point with less range but still very accurate within then range. If need be, engineers and break away from standards and create a math library aimed at the end product. This sort of thing is what attracts DESIGNERS to the ARM structure. Intel can do designs base of ARM if they want to. The have the legal stuff required to do that. Or even their own RISC . But that is another story. Reference: http://communities.intel.com/docs/DOC-3264 Intel vs. RISC -- "The Complete Story" Quote from: Transfusion on March 04, 2012, 10:39:34 AM fixed point operations usually return inaccurate data when fractions are involved. Fixed point operations are 100% accurate when dealing with rational numbers. floating point is not. 0.1 cannot be represented perfectly by floating point, but it can be represented easily using a scaled integer. Floating point is accurate, but it's rarely precise. that's why you need to compare floating point values with a tolerance rather than directly. for example, the following C# snippet prints out false: Code: [Select]using System; public class testing { public static void Main(String[] args) { float thirdf = 1/3; double thirdd = 1/3; Console.WriteLine(thirdf==thirdd); } } However, using the Decimal type, which is a 128-bit value representing 96-bit integer numbers scaled by a power of ten. The smallest possible non-zero value is 0.0000000000000000000000000001. Arithmetic using Fixed-point arithmetic is always precise, but not always accurate. Additionally, using fixed-point arithmetic to rival the abilities of floating point types has a performance overhead. floating point is done by the FPU built into any modern desktop, but the integer arithmetic has to be scaled using a number of operations on the CPU itself. Earlier computers that only had fixed point arithmetic (without coprocessors, anyway) could do scaled integer math many times (OFTEN ten-fold) faster than floating point. Cellphones and other mobile devices should be going for things like battery life first; therefore they should look for solutions that reduce power consumption; adding cores, memory, floating point support, etc. will either mean the device uses more power and therefore becomes useless after a few hours for it's intended purpose, or it means the battery is larger, making the device clumsier. There is of course room for improvements with battery technology too, but it would make more sense to improve the battery for longer life rather than use up the extra juice on a bunch of redundant circuitry that could easily be done without. Also, regarding RISC: the pentium and later chips are RISC chips, with a CISC translation layer, if I understand correctly. Quote Also, regarding RISC: the pentium and later chips are RISC chips, with a CISC translation layer, if I understand correctly.Right! Intel wants to sell legacy. All the chips have the same visible CISC to the programmers. But that is another layer of redundant stuff that is not needed. Intel is trying to sell history. A program that did differential calculus twenty years ago does not result in more eye-pleasing graphics Twenty years ago handheld graphics were almost nothing. Remember Pac-Man? |

Answer» How to use the usb flash drive in free dos as WELL as my system motherboard doesn't have usb boot option DOS-on-USBOf course, the BIOS must have boot from USB support. Or, if you really really need to boot from USB, you can use a tool such as PLoP to boot from USB via. a boot MANAGER on a CD or Floppy (a disc or a disk...) You can read how to do this here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/16822/boot-from-a-usb-drive-even-if-your-bios-wont-let-you/ Or go directly to PLoP: http://www.plop.at/en/bootmanagers.html Though, if you just need basic bootdisk capabilities, a floppy boot disk might offer you more ease of use. The ability to boot from USB is not something that can be ADDED to the BIOS, this is the closest you will get. |

Solve : WS_FTP and programmers? |

Answer» Why do they do it? WS_FTP was a beautiful, fully intuitive little program. But the new computer was 64bit so I had to go look up a new FTP. Great. It does a bunch of new things I have no need for. All I WANT to do is pass files back and forth between a single directory at the server and a single directory on my hard drive. Just venting, sorry, but why do they have to add CRAP until a beautiful program becomes a top-heavy dog? Been looking at FILEZILLA. ANYONE have any opinions on that program? I don't have an opinion on filezilla. I've never used it. I always use iFTP http://www.memecode.com/iftp.phpI, currently, use FileZilla and have absolutely NO issues with it.Core FTP LE is another one you might try. I think you'll find it looks quite similar to your older version of WS_FTP. FileZilla works fine for me. Been using it for years (switched from WS_FTP)Thanks for all the comments, guys. I'll be checking out the one Soybean suggested first. |

Solve : Do I still need to pay tax when it is not collected by an online retailer?? |
|
Answer» I am getting an iPod from Amazon and apparently they don't charge any tax. You just pay the price of the item. If I bought on apple's website, I'd have to pay about $17 in tax. BusinessAs you can see, that is an old story from last year. Here is some more of that story... Quote Retailers with stores located in California support the new law, of course, with California Retailers Association president Bill Dombrowski telling the L.A. Times, “You can’t give one segment of retail a 10% discount EVERY day. It’s just not FAIR.”IMHO just don't pay until the legality has been verified and is put into effect. My thought is he burden of proof is on the state of California. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 19, 2012, 08:23:39 PM You are apparently referring to sales tax in the state of California, USA.As you can see, that is an old story from last year. ...IMHO just don't pay until the legality has been verified and is put into effect. My thought is he burden of proof is on the state of California. Well that quote that I gave was posted by some guy on the apple forums in 2007, and it seemed like he was saying in GENERAL for the USA regardless of the state you live in. I live in MN. So since I don't live in California, that whole thing doesn't apply to me? And I won't have to pay the $17 tax on the ipod? You should not have to pay the tax. Some states, like California, look for ways ti crease their revenue with little regard of the hasle it is for the merchants. The general rule, at the present time, is that a transaction inside a sate is subject to the sales tax of that state. A on-line sale over the state line is not subject to tax to EITHER sate. Otherwise, if the states can impose tax on any pretext, you can imagine the awful disintegration of the retail market. In Europe that have a VAR tax. Which is the absoluteness of efficiency. For a up to date story about California... http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-calif-taxes-20120219,0,7614714.column (The link above is not about the Internet , but about how California is ready to tax almost anything.) |

Answer» Hey guys ! 5.1 or 7.1 headsetsHuh? Somebody explain this to me? Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 17, 2012, 12:37:55 PM Huh? Somebody explain this to me? Sound systems are often described using X.Y notation. You have X full range audio channels plus (possibly) one "low frequency effects" (LFE) channel. Ordinary stereo is thus described as "2.0", that is, two full range channels carrying the directional (left & right) audio channels, and (of course) no LFE channel. Other possible schemes include 5.1 - five full range directional channels (front left, front right, front centre, left surround, right surround) and one LFE channel. Various 7.1 schemes exist, the most common one adds 2 more channels to 5.1, back left and back right. Headsets (headphones) for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound have multiple drivers in the "cans" that go over your ears. Quote from: Geek-9pm on February 17, 2012, 12:37:55 PM Huh? Somebody explain this to me? 5 speakers, 1 subwoofer.1. A subwoofer is a speaker too. 2. The .1 is not the "subwoofer channel" Quote from: Salmon Trout on February 17, 2012, 02:21:09 PM 1. A subwoofer is a speaker too. If you buy a 2.1 speaker set, you get 2 speakers and 1 subwoofer. If you buy a 5.1 speaker set, you get 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer. If you buy a 7.1 speaker set, you get 7 speakers and 1 subwoofer. IT'S THE TRUTH AND THE GOVERNMENT WANTS TO HIDE IT FROM YOU!The LFE causes confusion sometimes. It was originally developed to carry very sub-bass cinematic sound effects down to maybe 30 Hz, e.g. thunder, explosions, impacts etc on their own channel. Thus film theatres could control the volume of these effects to suit the particular cinema's ACOUSTIC environment and sound reproduction system. In the original cinema theatre* implementation, the LFE was a separate channel fed to one or more subwoofers. Home replay systems may not have a separate subwoofer. Modern home surround decoders often include bass management to allow bass on any channel (main or LFE) to be fed only to the loudspeakers that can handle low-frequency signals. The point is that the LFE channel is not the "subwoofer channel"; there may be no subwoofer and, if there is, it may be handling a good deal more than effects. *That's how we spell it here. Nobodies mentioned noise CANCELLING headphones. I've got a simple stereo set of headphones with noise canceling and I can definitely tell the difference when the noise cancelling is turned on. If you have other people or TVs in the room it makes a big difference. I am pretty sure Geek knows what 5.1 and 7.1 means, I think he is wondering how you put something like that in headphones. I kind of wonder about that myself. I'm sure it can be done but does it really make a difference. Quote from: rthompson80819 on February 17, 2012, 04:40:02 PM Exactly! The original intent of the 5.1, as has been mentioned, was to enhance the acoustic experience is a large theater. Here is a general definition. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/5.1_surround_sound Quote ("five point one") is the common name for six channel surround sound multichannel audio systems. 5.1 is now the most commonly used layout in both commercial cinemas and home theaters. It uses five full bandwidth channels and one low-frequency effects channel (the "point one").[1]Headphones? Now I have learned somersetting new. Quote from: rthompson80819 on February 17, 2012, 04:40:02 PM I think he is wondering how you put something like that in headphones. I kind of wonder about that myself. Yesterday: Quote Headsets (headphones) for 5.1 and 7.1 surround sound have multiple drivers in the "cans" that go over your ears. To everyone confused here let me explain I am an on the go gamer..who visit LAN parties frequently..So i prefer the design BTW Bose is way too expensive Has anyone used audio-technica AD700 ? Have you un-ticked ALL the things in the 'What types of updates ?' section of the subscribed tab? Have you tried changing the 'How many updates?' to 'Only Important' in the subscribed tab ??reddevilggg; I did that, now i'll see if it has affect in the future. THANK you. Solve : Daylight Saving Time (DST) issue? |

Answer» While using Macrium Reflect, I got a update notice. Daylight Saving Time (DST) issue with incremental and differential file and folder backupsHuh that was not a error but a notification . every thing should be running smoothlyThe computer is running OK. THANK you.the original issue was a bug in the Microsoft C++ run-time with the given function. Here's some ref: http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedback/details/553156/get-daylight-does-not-work-correctly-unless-there-is-a-preceding-call-to-mktime Something is very confusing about that message, though. Filetimes are STORED on NTFS volumes as UTC, and translated for UI display, so the message doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Whether DST is in effect won't affect the file times being stored or read from disk. I think the real lesson is that dealing with DATES and times is enough of a Pain in the *censored* without having to worry about daylight savings time. |

Solve : WiFi internet tablets, need help.....? |
|
Answer» Going on a out of the country trip and need to keep in touch with my family through e-mail and facebook. I was looking for and laptop net or note book but now leaning towards an internet tablet. I don't need an expensive one, this will only be used one time and just lay around the house afterwards. I found 3 around $200, a Cruz, Coby Kyros, and a Archos, all 8". They all have about the same specs but the wifi is different, some have 802.11 b/g and the other one is 802.11 b/g/n. What would be the difference between b/g and b/g/n, does one have a better connection?Any reason for a new Topic on this ? ?My question was answered on notebooks in last posting, I needed information on WiFi tablets. WI-Fri overseas? WI-Fri overseas? I have been to 24 different countries in the last 7 years with both a WiFi capable laptop and my iPhone after I purchased it and never had any issues USING the WiFi unless I was in a location that didn't have it or I wasn't allowed access to it. If the OP faces any one of those two situations then it won't matter what kind of device he has. You can always go for something like a Kindle Fire as it can be used for reading and other THINGS once you return. If you don't plan on using it after you return and have taken GOOD care of it then you will more then likely be able to sale it for close to what you paid for it.mroilfield, Thanks for sharing. Indeed thou have visited more countries than I have. But is not the POINT. With no disrespect, your conclusion is premature. There is a group that represents, they say, over 40 European countries. They propose putting the brakes on WI-Fi usage. Quote 2011.05.19Source: http://www.i-policy.org/2011/05/council-of-europe-calls-for-limit-of-mobile-phone-wifi-use-in-schools.html I do not agree with what the claim. That is not the point, rather my points that some European bureaucrats ENTERTAIN the idea of limiting what you could do with your laptop. There is no indication they would make reasonable exceptions for anybody. Don't be fooled by their concern for the welfare of children. Nor for any technical claims they make. The motivation is much more sinister that one would think. They want to limit your freedom. Unless you pay for it. |

Solve : Random Password Generator? |
|
Answer» There are sites that will generate RANDOM strings to be USED for making passwords. Chop these into smaller blocks and put they together to make NEW strings the are non-repeating and non-predictable and qualify as pseudo-random sequences. http://random.org Or, try tis one: Quote https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm For a general overview or random strings: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Random_password_generator It is much, much more difficult to crack random strings that dictionary words. Most of the English words you know are less than 50,000 * words. Random strings have beyond millions of m millions of combinations. (* One source says there are half a million words in English. If you could recall one word EVERY ten seconds, how long would it take to do half a million. Never mind!)Random passwords aren't as good as a strong passphrase. While dictionary crackers might take a word or two, and maybe stick a few numbers on the end, it's unlikely that a dictionary cracker is GOING to try to build a passphrase. For example "Bear Drinking Coca-Cola" could be considered relatively strong because the dictionary in question would need brand names like "Coca-Cola" in it, as well as having N^3 different permutations to go through (where N is the size of the dictionary). Of course a random password is just as strong against attack. The difference is that "Bear Drinking Coca-Cola" is a *censored* of a lot easier to remember than WLiWxhuD2DAB. You can build a mnemonic for it, why not just use that longer mnemonic as the password in the first place?I just write down all my passwords. I really can't bothered remembering all 35 of them. I also group passwords, though. I use incorrect... That way every OS and app i use reminds me what my password is in case i forget...The problem with random passwords is that nobody can remember them, so you end up with a monitor covered with sticky notes with your passwords written on them. Quote from: Raptor on February 07, 2012, 11:28:53 AM I just write down all my passwords. I really can't bothered remembering all 35 of them. I also group passwords, though.Another twist... Solve : Netbook or Notebook, need help......? |
|
Answer» I going on vacation and I'm looking for a small laptop to use on the plane and keep in touch with my family. I don't need to download a lot of pictures or a lot of program files, just need it to get online to FACEBOOK and keep in touch with family while I'm gone, nothing big or expensive. Looking at 7" netbooks, they have less RAM and more HD space, the 10" notebooks have more RAM and less HD space. I'm not sure what I need more of, RAM or HD space, only need the internet to access Facebook and leave messages. Any help would be great, thanks........If you are only going to do basic internet tasks and as you said, not download large files or do resource-intensive tasks you would be well-served with a netbook. File storage REQUIRES HDD space, and multitasking requires RAM. Microsoft recommends at least 2 GB of RAM if you are going to run Windows 7 Home Premium(I strongly suggest upgrading to at least Home Premium because the Starter edition which ships with many notebooks only allows up to 3 concurrent applications and does not allow changing the DESKTOP background), so keep that in mind. the Starter edition which ships with many notebooks only allows up to 3 concurrent applications and does not allow changing the desktop background),You're right about the desktop background but not about concurrent applications. I have an HP Mini 210 netbook with Windows 7 Starter and I have it on now with 5 applications open (Word, Excel, Opera, Paint, and Foxit Reader). The number of applications that can be open depends, like other versions of Windows, on available memory. The HP Mini 210 came with 1GB but I upgraded it to 2GB. It starts in about 1 MINUTE and is ready to rock and roll; so, the Starter edition may have some advantage in speed due to it's being a slim version of Windows. For a thorough comparison of versions of Windows 7, see Windows 7 Starter- what are the limitations?. Quote from: Transfusion on January 21, 2012, 11:31:23 PM I have not been able to find many 7'' netbooks on the market, though, the majority are 11.6'' or 12.1''.I believe the most common screen size is 10.1". My bad- http://news.softpedia.com/news/Windows-7-Starter-Shakes-Off-Handicaps-112963.shtml Quote We are also going to ENABLE Windows 7 Starter customers the ability to run as many applications simultaneously as they would like, instead of being constricted to the 3 application limit that the previous Starter editions included,” explained Brandon LeBlanc, Windows communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team.I'm not up to date about 10.1'' screen size being the most common either... Thank you for correcting me. Personally I would opt for a slightly larger size as the keyboard wouldn't be so cramped and eyestrain would be reduced. It would also be helpful for watching movies on those long flights and car trips...As i was calling around on notebooks I told the salesman I just needed something small just to get on the internet to keep in touch with my family. He told instead of a note or netbook why not try a internet tablet. Would an internet tablet or android tablet do the same thing as a notebook? like I said, I only need something to access the internet and leave messages on facebook only. Would this be a better idea? http://tablets-review.toptenreviews.com/tablets-vs-laptops-the-pros-and-cons.html http://blog.laptopmag.com/tablets-vs-laptops-whats-best-for-you http://www.pcworld.com/article/243132/tablets_vs_laptops_vs_smartphones.html This may help. |

It sounds more like a virus if it happens on all browsers and even after rolling back. Try Microsoft Security Essentials. Disable other spyware and virus scanners. By the way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Criticism_of_Facebook Never said I trusted Google either. In fact, I do nothing of consequence through Google. I don't use any SOCIAL media other than this forum and metacritic. Which couldn't really be considered social media as neither of them want to violate my privacy like an overly eager American airport security guard. Quote from: Raptor on January 20, 2012, 05:05:43 AM Good chance to quit Facebook and regain your privacy. You are not EVER going to regain your privacy. The CIA and "Homeland Security," the actual operators behind Facebook already has stored everything posted to every account and deleting it does not remove the records (check their TOS). How do you think Homeland Security gets facial recognition on people with no criminal record?? I hope they try to recognize me with my three accounts, managed through a VPN and with nothing but fictitious information and BORROWED photos of celebs (and nobody's), birds and animals in the profile. Good luck with that.... I use them for the same purpose as "law enforcement" - research, tracing deadbeat dads, loan skips and other nefarious entities. How naive people are to think that all that personal information isn't being collected and stored and USED. I've helped trace over 100 fugitives and put them where they belong with Facebook & MySpace! G+ is rapidly becoming my third source. All this, and I do this only as a fun hobby sideline to my "day job!" It all started with tracking down my deadbeat ex., which took all of 45 minutes to have an address, phone number, employer and GPS location!! FYI - A fool and their privacy are soon parted!! Quote from: Raptor on January 20, 2012, 05:05:43 AM Good chance to quit Facebook and regain your privacy. I don't see what the big deal is concerning social media and everyone's privacy. I do have a face book account but I guarantee everything on it is there because I put it there and I could care less if any one knows it. All my "Private" stuff doesn't go on any social media but if I was to put it in there it would be my fault and not the sites fault for displaying it. It is like that time a lot of people were outraged that face book would show their HOME phone number when they were the ones that put it on the site and then had it to where any one can access their information. |

Answer» Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 29, 2012, 06:09:14 PM CCleaner ?Hello friend!! It fixes nothing. It cleans clutter and temps from your PC ect. As I have clearly stated in other posts. I'm a long way from being a garu. I read a lot of malware fighters posts, just to see if I can learn any thing new. SEVERAL of those posts state that malware and other INFECTIONS choose these kinds of places to hide and do their dirty work. Can I prove that? No sir I can't. I like to keep my PC clutter free as possible and so I'm a big fan of CCleaner and I always recommend it to all my friends, young and old. Thanks for your comment. PS I have never been infected that I know of, so I think I will continue doing the same things I have always done, until some one can convince me to do other wise. I only use 29.5 Gigs(Windows7 and a few APPS. that I use nearly every day) on a 600 Gig HD. I keep my PC as clean as I know how. I have back up images of my OS on two different external HD's where I also keep other things I don't wish to lose. garybear! Answer» This idea has been around for years. If anybody can make it work, it will give the Hard Disk Drive enough power to go into orbit. (METAPHORICALLY) Ten years ago, it hadn't even been discovered. But now, after intense and dedicated research and development, "giant magnetoresistance" -- or GMR for short -- makes its mass-market debut in IBM's record-breaking 16.8-gigabyte hard disk drive for desktop computers using a special GMR structure developed at IBM called a spin valve.Yeah, old stuff. But the use of really wild ideas made it happen. Notice the GMR is still a work in progress. Comments? Quote from: Geek-9pm on January 29, 2012, 12:40:30 PM Comments? What's a "GBR"? Quote from: Salmon Trout on January 29, 2012, 12:43:02 PM What's a "GBR"?Thank you. Fixed it. Spell checker could not save me. Okay, here's a comment. You opened the thread by saying that "If anybody can make it work, it will" etc and then reveal that somebody has made it work, back in the days when 16 gigabyte hard drives were "record breaking". What NEXT... Mr Bell's speaking TELEGRAPH machine? Maybe one day people will be able to VIEW coloured images of ladies in bathing costumes from more than a mile away, using wires! There's only one big giant head I recognize! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Giant_Head |

Answer» Hello everybody, i have an msi 7392 motherboard, with 2 gb ddr2 ram, 500 gb hard disk, pentium dual core 2.8 with a 512 mb pci express graphic card.. 1 Continuous Beep Doesn't seem to be an "official" error code.yes, i have just trry another power supply, still the same, yes, am also thinking like you but if i change the motherboard? will it be 100% sure that the problem will be solved? If the mainboard beeps, I wouldn't consider it dead just yet. How old is all this equipment? And what have you done before the beeping started?the last time i have use the pc, i played need for SPEED on it, then i turn it off normally, but teh day after when turning on, i got this problem, what would you sugest me?and yes, abt the equipment, its been 18 month since i bought it except the hard disk, i had change the hard disk 12 month ago..So you haven't made any hardware CHANGES the last time you used it? Have you tried resetting the BIOS by removing the battery? |

Solve : Convert Old Audio? |
|
Answer» I was asked to do this from another tech down at where I partially worked at. Thing is that they had backed up there music up to these SCSI Disks BASICALLY a flopped CD thats 3.5 I have the reader an everything cause, his seemed to have trouble. Any rate it was used with something called like the Wizard Audimation that was down there. Thing is there AC2 format which doesnt exsist anymore, I do have the sound card but, it uses IRQ's. Is there an app that will let me convert it out to like a wav or something? If you can play audible sound why not rerecord the sound with a modern device which you can then record to the computer's HDD? truenorththe codex is on the sound card. I am looking for potentially a player to record them in real timeLet me come at it another way because i suspect we have a different language issue here (you and I). If i read your issue correctly you currently have some old storage media of music. You also have the ability to "play" (and listen) to that music because you have the necessary hardware that will play it. However you want to take that music and be able to put it on your computer then transcribe it to a a recorder (such as a modern CD burner ) that will produce a disc that can be played and listened to on current "players". But because the current audio format is not recognized by any modern day devices you cannot do that. Is this correct so far?If not correct where is it not correct? So believing that you do have the ability to play the current stored audio tracks that at least at the moment allows you to "listen"(hear) to them in their current file format. Then again i say play them /listen to them/and at the same time using a modern day audio recorder record them and then transcribe them to the computer HDD. From which you can then burn them to a CD after which you can play/listen to them on modern day cd players readily available.Have i defined your issue correctly and your objective? truenorth Quote from: truenorth on January 08, 2012, 12:46:04 PM Let me come at it another way because i suspect we have a different language issue here (you and I). I didnt say that I could listen too it. I only have the sound card an disks that there on. Quote Thing is there AC2 format which doesnt exsist anymore AC2 is one of the old Dolby Digital formats. It came before AC3. You may need a special board to do the conversion. Best to consult an experienced (older!) broadcast or studio audio engineer. This may not be the place to find them. AH HA! So then your dilemma is to find something that WILL allow you to be able to play/listen/hear/record them. I have absolutely NO knowledge that would allow me to say that the solution is contained in the linked web site below. It is all gibberish to me but it does appear to deal with your issue . Whether there is an element of guidance for you i don't know. Maybe reading it will point you in a direction of possible ability to do what you desire. http://linux.about.com/od/commands/l/blcmdl8_MAKEDEV.htm good luck, truenorthI have the sound card, this is the thrid time I mentioned that I had. I just need to play them or have them converted via an app. Thats all dealing with some fourm of linux commands. The issue is I dont not what I need to do in order to get it to work with the sound card then if nothing else. From your post before your last one i DO understand what you have. My impression was that from the link if a linux O/S was available there was a possibility from within it to be able to "program" the linux O/S to recognize your SCSC card and access them. I cannot be sure that is what is being stated because as i said i am NOT knowledgeable regarding some of the technologies you are trying to USE. Unless you can find some old useable hardware capable of using your recorded media i don't see how you can accomplish what you want. truenorthSo something like knoppix or something should be able too load the card rightThere are several radio automation programs that used Dolby AC2 encoding in the early to mid '90s and have since gone to PCM WAV or MP3 format. One such software is supplied by ENCO, which offers a direct software conversion from Dolby AC2 to either newer format. See here: http://www.enco.com/forum/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=3572&DisplayType=nested&setCookie=1 We have about 5600 of these "legacy" Dolby AC2 files in our station's library, which would take about a year for one person to "re-record" all of them, so that is not a viable solution. Problem is, the conversion software seems to be "closely held" and only made available to those who purchase the company's software. Our AS16xxxx sound cards can still read and decode the files to play them, but we cannot edit the "Cart" information files to modify the intro and fade trip points for the station. The files also will not manually "fade" in our poorly conceived Pristine software. We are seriously considering dumping Pristine for a BETTER solution (likely ENCO DAD or Presenter), so we may eventually have the conversion software to achieve what you are trying to do. Pristine stubbornly refuses to offer any conversion path, along with their other poor support habits. We ordered and paid for a custom genre library from Pristine over 18 months ago and haven't received it yet !! If we elect to go with ENCO, I will post here. I sent one of our Dolby AC2 encoded files to the sales rep at ENCO and they returned me an excellent quality PCM WAV file conversion. -- Spike out.... I'll look at it once, I get the chance Im stuck on dial up at the moment. This should still be a big help. Alot of the stuff that is gone that had most of the backups on it. We still have probably around a few hundred left. I also, want to use the SCSI Optical Drive for my old stuff. We still have all the cards that they used as well but, I dont know how to set it up on a machine. Let alone it has too be a very old copy of windows. Wait, so this isnt software that can convert these? Rather a company that would? |
