Solve : Netbook or Notebook, need help......?

Answer»

I going on vacation and I'm looking for a small laptop to use on the plane and keep in touch with my family. I don't need to download a lot of pictures or a lot of program files, just need it to get online to FACEBOOK and keep in touch with family while I'm gone, nothing big or expensive. Looking at 7" netbooks, they have less RAM and more HD space, the 10" notebooks have more RAM and less HD space. I'm not sure what I need more of, RAM or HD space, only need the internet to access Facebook and leave messages. Any help would be great, thanks........If you are only going to do basic internet tasks and as you said, not download large files or do resource-intensive tasks you would be well-served with a netbook. File storage REQUIRES HDD space, and multitasking requires RAM. Microsoft recommends at least 2 GB of RAM if you are going to run Windows 7 Home Premium(I strongly suggest upgrading to at least Home Premium because the Starter edition which ships with many notebooks only allows up to 3 concurrent applications and does not allow changing the DESKTOP background), so keep that in mind.
I have not been able to find many 7'' netbooks on the market, though, the majority are 11.6'' or 12.1''.

This looks like a good deal-dual core Atom N570 1.66 GHz with Hyperthreading and 1 MB L2 cache, 2 GB DDR3 1066MHz memory, 320 GB HDD, Wireless N, Bluetooth 3.0, up to 11 hours battery life, 10.1'' screen, and Windows 7 Home Premium OEM, for $379.99Given your desire for such limited uses (essentially messaging as far as i can see) and i suspect given the environment you mainly intend to make use of it in.Where i believe your emphasis is on size (smaller the better). Then i am wondering if you have given any thought to a PDA device. Certainly  they are generally far less costly than either net-books or notebooks. There are a lot of them out there to compare. truenorth Quote from: Transfusion on January 21, 2012, 11:31:23 PM

You're right about the desktop background but not about concurrent applications.  I have an HP Mini 210 netbook with Windows 7 Starter and I have it on now with 5 applications open (Word, Excel, Opera, Paint, and Foxit Reader).  The number of applications that can be open depends, like other versions of Windows, on available memory.  The HP Mini 210 came with 1GB but I upgraded it to 2GB.  It starts in about 1 MINUTE and is ready to rock and roll; so, the Starter edition may have some advantage in speed due to it's being a slim version of Windows.   For a thorough comparison of versions of Windows 7, see Windows 7 Starter- what are the limitations?

I believe the most common screen size is 10.1".

We are also going to ENABLE Windows 7 Starter customers the ability to run as many applications simultaneously as they would like, instead of being constricted to the 3 application limit that the previous Starter editions included,” explained Brandon LeBlanc, Windows communications manager on the Windows Client Communications Team.
I'm not up to date about 10.1'' screen size being the most common either...   Thank you for correcting me.

Personally I would opt for a slightly larger size as the keyboard wouldn't be so cramped and eyestrain would be reduced. It would also be helpful for watching movies on those long flights and car trips...As i was calling around on notebooks I told the salesman I just needed something small just to get on the internet to keep in touch with my family. He told instead of a note or netbook why not try a internet tablet. Would an internet tablet or android tablet do the same thing as a notebook? like I said, I only need something to access the internet and leave messages on facebook only. Would this be a better idea? http://tablets-review.toptenreviews.com/tablets-vs-laptops-the-pros-and-cons.html
