Solve : HP products and Malware? |
|
Answer» >:(Somemore China threat talk from the retired CIA computer security tech and posted from my HP computer. Quote Hi all, (Homeland Security site, then US- CERT and look for "HP Printer Vulnerabilty") I've constantly mentioned HP products and printers as showing evidence of being modified so they are used for Malware proliferation. (Without the user/owners apparent knowledge). Finally, a study by Columbia University "discovers" the problem inherent with HP Products (currently made in China) No one in the US Government wants to admit the problem with these products for fear of the impact on HP. It's a real problem that needs to be understood by all users of HP multifunction printers (and any other product from HP). I've attached this article in Adobe .pdf format. If you use a printer manufactured in China it "Will have Malware" installed in firmware on the printer that will make your computer a target for additional future problems on the Internet. Internet use with extra care, without an HP product, (my motto, you choose your method if you think you know better) Your information is not true. A computer virus can be transmitted in a variety of ways. Putting a virus into a retail product is difficult, but not impossible. However, it is so much easier to invade a computer over the Internet that there is no resown a virus criminal would put his malicious creation inside a retail product of a large company . But whit an obvious twist. It may be with the intent to damage the reputation of a competitor. If that is the CASE, it must be an evil machination of a wicked competitor of HP. If only HP printers have the virus, then HP is a victim, not the criminal. Continue to buy HP products. Boycott everybody that does not have a virus, because they are the ones doing it. Who are you working for?I got it from a former co-worker in CIA communications. He was a computer security technician and follows the subject closely. He got it from the U.S. Cert article below; he strongly feels that many computer products made in China are made with a bug in them that can be activated by them when they want. I had a canon all in one that kept kicking out my canon driver and inserting a Xerox proscanner work centre driver that I could not get rid of and had to reinstall my canon driver often and then again in a few days or WEEKS. Never had a xerox product. Was it installed at factory or did I get a bug from a chinese web site, I don't know. http://www.us-cert.gov/reading_room/HPPrinterVulnerability2012.pdfThank you. The document is helpful. Here is a partial quote: Quote The underlying capability that enables firmware updating through print jobs is HP’s Printer JobFrom the above HP has identified the problem. The article does NOT indicate that Malicious Software is shipped inside retail products. rather it shows that a document can invoke the script language of then printer to do a firmware update. Which is a 'feature', not a 'bug'. Moral: Do not print documents for untrusted sources. Or turn of the job control language scripting of the printers in question. I once met this guy and he hypnotised me. I don't know what the keyword is but when someone says it, I'll go into president-assasination mode and nothing wil be able to stop me. I think the word might be German in origin so I have to stay away from German restaurants. Luckily, those are very few in between. However, the onset of cheap German products has caused additional concern for my "condition". Last Christmas a German friend sent me a musical card and I managed to set it on fire just before it got to the second part of O Tannenbaum. Disaster was averted this time! I also think I may have a piece of metal lodged between my buttocks that is of alien origin. Would anyone LIKE to see pictures of the bump of flesh down there that I suspect of being a Marsian communication array that uses my spine as an antenna? The keyphrase is "run the kill" in Latin... Thats why you couldn't spot it...Talk about moving the goalposts. Previously it was about HP printers that already had software installed to essentially allow for remote tampering, which presumably means that they can do evil THINGS like remotely cause your paper to jam or have it stop printing in yellow. The key quote here is from the title of the "news item" in the PDF file. "susceptible to malicious firmware update." susceptible. So what happened to the previous claims that they already arrived with tampered ROMs and Flash BIOS code? What happened to that? Surely those claims weren't fabricated, were they? This has absolutely nothing to do with Chinese cyberterrorism and everything to do with the inevitable fact that software is going to have bugs and issues and that they are going to be exploited. To assume that just because the devices were fabricated in China that there is some sort of connection is nothing short of an expression of ones own pugilistic stance towards foreign powers. Nowhere in the advisories is there any evidence towards you, or rather your totally not fictitious CIA "contact"'s, claims previously that HP Printers came pre-loaded with malware out of the factory. No evidence was ever presented for that claim and if this is the evidence for that claim it proves nothing other than the fact that the entire thing was, as I said, blown entirely out of proportion. I still am unclear how a remote exploit that could be used to cause a printer to overheat and possibly catch fire was morphed into "the chinese canz steal our dataz". It's been nearly a year since your initial post. Why has china done nothing with their clearly aggressive attempt to establish a beachhead of printers? Why do you and your friend continue to claim that this has anything to do with China without actually backing it up with anything concrete? Why do you continue to waste your time and the time of others entertaining your own paranoid delusions? Why do I suspect your CIA friend is in fact entirely fictituous? The title is a bit misleading as if i go back to your Posts from 2 / 3 years ago you also had this happen with a Canon and an Epson.Next year it will be Tablet computers from Korea have built-in cell phone tamers. Or maybe model airplanes from Malaysia have hidden air anti-aircraft missiles. |

Answer» A friend called last night to complain that his Yahoo Mail inbox was being stuffed with hundreds of emails a day. Apparently these are legitimate. Most are ads from well known sources (Costco, JC Penney, AT&T ETC). Aside from the one to enlarge his *CENSORED*, there are none from dubious pharmaceutical companies and no porn. Quote from: Sidewinder on February 03, 2009, 06:36:41 AM The problem is these emails are not classified as spam, look legitimate and end up in his inbox. This just doesn't make sense. For ten years all he got was the usual assortment of spam, porn and some legitimate email. Now there is a sudden flood of emails coming from legitimate sources. After talking to him today, I found out that he can delete only one email at a time and the select all checkbox on the Yahoo Mail page does not work. I still think it is a Yahoo problem, but I thought I'd run it by the members here. He doesn't have his email listed anywhere or given it out, has he? What about subscribing to websites? |

Solve : Cannot remember password mask? |
|
Answer» I feel really dumb for asking for help on this one but am totally dumbfounded. A while back I was reading through a Web site on how to create strong passwords. I used one of the sample passwords to try it on an APPLICATION I was using with the intent of later changing it. One distraction led to another and I never reset the password. And now all I can RECALL is that it was a sample of changing the phrase "moose" something. I thought maybe it was mooselip (or mooselips). I've tried many combinations substituting letters for numbers and special characters and mixing case but nothing has taken. I am really puzzled because this seems like it should be so simple to figure out. I recall that the site I was reading was either a Microsoft forum or something very similar and wonder if ANYONE might be familiar with it. I have tried all kinds of searches with no luck. It may be help us help you if we knew what app was password protected in the first place... |

Solve : HELP! Pages keep printing all black? |

Answer» I'm an office assistant in a small architectural firm (when I say small-I mean there are only 4 employees INCLUDING myself). We have a Xerox 510 wide format plotter. We received some PDF files/drawings to print but when I try printing them there is nothing but a black page. I would NORMALLY think something was wrong with the plotter but it was just serviced yesterday, and other drawings print just fine. This has happened to one of our clients to whom I sent pdf drawings. When he tried to print them at his FACILITY he had the same problem. I have no idea what the problem is and it's been left up to me to figure it out-PLEASE HELP! |

I PRESUME this is NOT a recently arrived at conundrum but that he is only revealing it at this juncture of his life on the occasion of this particular anniversary of his birth. For most of us of the male gender it is my personal observation that this dilemma has always existed (at least as long as there have been BLACK holes in space). Solve : old pc? |
|
Answer» DESKTOP 5.downgrading versions of installed apps such asThee is no basis for doing the above. The current Firefox is 9 and is works very well on older computers. But it you want a more spartan browser, try Opera or Sea Monkey. The one single thing you can do to improve the performance would be to up grade to 256 MB of ram. You presently have only 128 MB. You will notice the difference. If you back step to Windows 98 SE you will find some nice programs will not run on Windows 98 SE. Some new programs require the C++ run time library, which does not work on OS earlier Windows XP sp3. Quote Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 editions, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3From MS support for current C++n run time. Keep XP SP3 and add some RAM. There's no way Windows XP SP 3 is going to run with only 128MB of RAM. You need at least 512MB RAM or it'll swap all day long. There's also no POINT in any Windows OS that's out-phased by Microsoft if you want to go on-line, you'll just be an easy target for viruses. Why don't you use Linux? |

You can find them here- http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&Description=ibuypower&x=0&y=0 i think im getting that one thats like the best i could get right thereLaptops arent meant for gaming. Yes, there are gaming laptops, but, the problem you will ultimately run into that you will regret: In a year, its going to be outdated. You can upgrade the video card about once, and then they change the card interface again. With a desktop PC, you can almost always continue to upgrade. Not to mention, PC's will always have more hard drive and memory support than laptops. I paid $1024 (including Tax) for my laptop... 1.73GHz processor, 120GB HDD, Vista Home Premium, 1GB RAM (now 2GB), and a 128MB nVidia GeForce GO 7300 video card... point is, its now highly outdated, and worth only about $500-600. The PC version of this would probably have been around $700, and at the very least, I could upgrade the hard drive to 500GB for a relatively cheap price, the RAM up to 4GB, and a new video card... and I could keep UPGRADING every two years or so for about $100 for at least four years before it would be pointless to continue where I might as well buy a new PC due to un-upgradable parts such as the front side bus. Look into what you are investing in. I got a laptop for visual studio 2008 and vista... but what do ya know it runs games faster then my other PC. probably on account of being a dualcore that's almost twice the speed in each core and quadruple the RAM.but then again who cares if a computer is oudated if you an do what you want to do on it and be happy? My computer is probably outdated, it's got a single core AthloAMD athlon64 3500+ processor, 2.75gb memory, a 9500GT 512mb graphics card and and a 200 gb hard drive. Well as long as you're not breaking the BANK to play Crysis, then that's good |

If you ask me, developer time is better spent adding new features than trying to add some futile protection scheme. the idea being that one could justify ignoring piracy on the basis that the new feature could very well have attracted new customers and made the revenue stream stronger than it would have been if "piracy protection" was the feature that was added, since that has no consumer value whatsoever, and may in fact drive off potential customers. And there is the additional cost of more support as your piracy protection scheme fires off for legitimate customers. Thanks BC_programmer. Excellent concept. Developers, TAKE heed! Many companies have spent millions (Disney, News Corp, the NFL, Time Warner, SONY, Viacom, etc.) and gotten nowhere. Quote Millions spent on copyright hasn't cut piracy Echo what BC_Programmer said. Solve : Post Upgrade Checklist? |
|
Answer» I have recently UPGRADED my computer and replaced everything except the case and eventually replaced it with a Coolermaster because the NEW system ran hotter than my old system. I am having an audio-video SYNC problem with every program I use to run video (Nero7, Vegas Movie Studio 8, Windows Media Player). The video runs smoothly but is just out of sync. I know the basic things to do like updating drivers but could someone give me a checklist or send me a link of everything that should be done after upgrading so I can rule out the basic things that may cause this problem? Thanks for the quick reply. I am using a hard drive that I had previously used with another system. Are you saying I shouldn't use it at all or are you saying I should erase it before I use it?I'm saying you should erase (or reformat) or reinstall Windows before you use that drive. I would get the drivers from the website, since they will be more updated. |

Solve : Formating my MP3 player....? |
|
Answer» have you tried a high powered magnet?? that always seems to to work. lol jkYou know, I actually do have 2 rare earth magnets lying around somewhere.... Dear Braden, Heh..... they never told me that... I'll try looking through their site and see if I can find something. I'll get you posted. It's not looking good... Well, when I tried to email them (using the email address supplied in my mp3 MANUAL), it returned my mail... so much for that... But still, SupportPlus China Ltd. is open..... and Yay! It's not in CHINESE! Um... This section of our website will be online soon. Thank you for your patience. So I've reached a dead end (again.). Or so it seems. Any last-ditch errors anyone is willing to offer? A last resort? A computer shop.A computer shop? I think I'll pass...When you contact Support, if they go all: "Man, you just messed it right then and there, unplugging it before it was properly ejected" I recommend that if the first ATTEMPT goes bad, try again, without telling them that it was unplugged incorrectly. |

Solve : Computer Freezing.. Frustrating.? |
|
Answer» Hey, for the past few months I have been having problems with my computer freezing. Not too long before I put some new RAM in and not too long after I put a new video card in, Im thinking the problem would probably be the RAM but the problem with testing it is that it doesnt freeze up in any particular pattern, it MIGHT run fine for 2 months, and then start freezing up again all the time and then go back to running normally.. any suggestions? It is getting pretty frustrating and would really like to have it fixed soon. Go to http://www.memtest.org/ |

Solve : I need a new desktop media player, stat!? |
|
Answer» Hey all, I USED to use Music Match for my DESKTOP music player and I really liked how it was set up. It listed all of my MP3s (all legally downloaded, of COURSE ) and I could pick and choose what I wanted to play very easily. Well, Music Match is apparently gone for good now, taken over and renamed Yahoo Music, and I hate it, it just isn't as easy to use. I tried Windows Media Player also, and will use it if I can't find anything else, but I don't really CARE for it either. Does anyone have any suggestions for FREE media players that are really easy to use?TRY this out: |

Solve : I really don't know what should i do......? |
|
Answer» Last week i came back home and turn on my PC (never open it for a long time coz i'm leaving with my friends). First, the PC is OK for a few minutes and suddenly a blue screen APPEARS. I forgot what it says coz it's is too long, but i remember one of the cause stated on the screen is about installing a new hardware that cause the problem which i did nothing before the blue screen message come out...what hardware? I didn't do anything....i ask my friend and they told me it's probably the RAM. I changed the slot and then restart the PC again. Then, only the fan of the CPU is working....every other things just shut off. I restart again, then a buzzing sound came out.Buzz.....Buzz.....Buzz....Then i turn it of. When i restart again, same as the first time. Only the CPU fan is working. What should i do.......? (never open it for a long time coz i'm leaving with my friends)Huh? What exactly did you do, and can you get the PC to do anything at all? Does it get to the BIOS screen? What did you do to the RAM?If it set unused for a long time you MUST clean and reseat your heatsink and CPU sometimes.I have 2 PCs...one at home and one with me which i told you i'm staying with my friends(I'm at college, rent house). I didn't used the one at home till now...i really want to clean it up but not enough tools and materials such as thermal paste for the processor...for the RAm part...i just TAKE it out and put in in a new slot...it didn't work...and put it back in the first slot...and nothing happen also...Bios?....how am i able to reach the BIOS?....i told you guys...when i switch on...only the fan of the CPU is running...nothing happen...yesterday i switch on...and a sound came out..... beeepp.....beeeppp.....beeeppp....my friend told me the sound is because the RAM...is it true...by the way...thanks guys...for helping and your opinion...does anyone have experienced this problem or this is the first time that you heard of it...and it makes me the first one...haiyaaa....If you get continuous beeps when booting then most likely it is the RAM. To make sure, reseat all your expansion cards (if any) like video, sound, NIC, RAM, power to the motherboard. Clean out the case with compressed air. Now try it. Still got the problem, get some other RAM. Alan <>< Thanks ale52 for the advice...i'll try... |
