Solve : Video Display SVideo Back to Primary?

Answer»

I was going to watch a MOVIE or something last night. Thing is that know I cant get the display back to my monitor after I transfered i
to my tv. Im useing the S-Video portion of the card to a RCA spilt. Its a NVIDIA GEFORCE FX5500. Do I have to remove the connection
or something?Operating system?truenorthWin XP Pro SP 2? SP 3 ?The purpose of my question was that in win 7 there is a keyboard method that allows a user doing what you were doing to chose from a variety of manners of video display ie; both computer screen and tv screen or tv or monitor only options. Therefore i was thinking that perhaps you had selected to view only on the tv and had not selected both before going back to the computer only. When you were viewing on the tv was the same video being displayed on the monitor of the computer? Are we on a desktop or a laptop with this issue? If you have not REMOVED the cable connection from your computer i certainly would try that -but i really don't see that being the problem. If it is a desk top do you have another monitor you can try? Are you sure that the cable to the monitor is properly connected--does the monitor activity light come on? truenorthI got it back There is a side tab that comes up on the card configuration. My television is only like 12 inches at best. I remoted in as
well but, I still wasnt able too find it RIGHT off. Sorry, for the hastle.

Solve : HP products and Malware?

Answer»

>:(Somemore China threat talk from the retired CIA computer security tech and posted from my HP computer.
Quote

Hi all,

(Homeland Security site, then US- CERT and look for "HP Printer Vulnerabilty")

I've constantly mentioned HP products and printers
as showing evidence of being modified so they are used for Malware
proliferation. (Without the user/owners apparent knowledge).

Finally, a study by Columbia University "discovers" the problem inherent
with HP Products (currently made in China)
No one in the US Government wants to admit the problem with these
products for fear of the impact on HP.

It's a real problem that needs to be understood by all users of HP
multifunction printers (and any other product from HP).

I've attached this article in Adobe .pdf format. If you use a printer
manufactured in China it "Will have Malware" installed
in firmware on the printer that will make your computer a target for
additional future problems on the Internet.

Internet use with extra care, without an HP product, (my motto, you
choose your method if you think you know better)

Your information is not true.
A computer virus can be transmitted in a variety of ways. Putting a virus into a retail product is difficult, but not impossible.

However, it is so much easier to invade a computer over the Internet that there is no resown a virus criminal would put his malicious creation inside a retail product of a large company .

But whit an obvious twist. It may be with the intent to damage the reputation of a competitor. If that is the CASE, it must be an evil machination of a wicked competitor of HP.

If only HP printers have the virus, then HP is a victim, not the criminal. Continue to buy HP products. Boycott everybody that does not have a virus, because they are the ones doing it.

Who are you working for?I got it from a former co-worker in CIA communications. He was a computer security technician and follows the subject closely.

He got it from the U.S. Cert article below; he strongly feels that many computer products made in China are made with a bug in them that can be activated by them when they want. I had a canon all in one that kept kicking out my canon driver and inserting a Xerox proscanner work centre driver that I could not get rid of and had to reinstall my canon driver often and then again in a few days or WEEKS. Never had a xerox product. Was it installed at factory or did I get a bug from a chinese web site, I don't know.

http://www.us-cert.gov/reading_room/HPPrinterVulnerability2012.pdfThank you. The document is helpful. Here is a partial quote:
Quote
The underlying capability that enables firmware updating through print jobs is HP’s Printer Job
Language (PJL). PJL is an extension of Printer Command Language (PCL), which allows control
at the print job level. 3

Threat

Printing a virus-laden document would be enough for an attacker to take over control of the
vulnerable printer and remain hidden to anti-virus products since current anti-virus products are
unable to scan the software on embedded chips in the printer.

Once an attacker has control of the printer, the printer can connect to a C&C server to download
further instructions, steal data from print or scan jobs, or be used as a launching point for
attacking other systems on the network, which is further facilitated by the fact that usually
printers are trusted by computers on the network and organizations are not usually prepared for
attacks from their own printers.

According to the HP press release of November 29, 2011,4 “While HP has identified a potential

security vulnerability with some HP LaserJet printers, no customer has reported unauthorized
access. The specific vulnerability exists for some HP LaserJet devices if placed on a public
internet without a firewall.”

Mitigation

Identification of Vulnerable Printers

     • Identify the number of vulnerable LaserJet print devices deployed in your organization.
                                                                                  2
HP Document ID: c03102449 identifies 42 vulnerable models . These models have been
identified as vulnerable and must be mitigated.

     • Conduct further research to determine other devices that may also be vulnerable to
remote firmware updates. This includes identifying devices with PJL capability and,
FURTHERMORE, those with RFU functionality included (PJL capability by itself does not
necessarily indicate that the printer is vulnerable).

Protecting Vulnerable Print Devices

     • Disable the Remote Firmware Update (RFU) capability for all affected print devices in
your organization. The RFU feature for HP print devices is enabled by default. Enable it

                                                                                                                  2

From the above HP has identified the problem. The article does NOT indicate that Malicious Software is shipped inside retail products. rather it shows that a document can invoke the script language of then printer to do a firmware update. Which is a 'feature', not a 'bug'.

Moral: Do not print documents for untrusted sources. Or turn of the job control language scripting of the printers in question.

I once met this guy and he hypnotised me. I don't know what the keyword is but when someone says it, I'll go into president-assasination mode and nothing wil be able to stop me. I think the word might be German in origin so I have to stay away from German restaurants. Luckily, those are very few in between. However, the onset of cheap German products has caused additional concern for my "condition". Last Christmas a German friend sent me a musical card and I managed to set it on fire just before it got to the second part of O Tannenbaum. Disaster was averted this time!

I also think I may have a piece of metal lodged between my buttocks that is of alien origin.

Would anyone LIKE to see pictures of the bump of flesh down there that I suspect of being a Marsian communication array that uses my spine as an antenna?
The keyphrase is "run the kill" in Latin...

Thats why you couldn't spot it...Talk about moving the goalposts. Previously it was about HP printers that already had software installed to essentially allow for remote tampering, which presumably means that they can do evil THINGS like remotely cause your paper to jam or have it stop printing in yellow.

The key quote here is from the title of the "news item" in the PDF file.

"susceptible to malicious firmware update."

susceptible. So what happened to the previous claims that they already arrived with tampered ROMs and Flash BIOS code? What happened to that? Surely those claims weren't fabricated, were they?

This has absolutely nothing to do with Chinese cyberterrorism and everything to do with the inevitable fact that software is going to have bugs and issues and that they are going to be exploited. To assume that just because the devices were fabricated in China that there is some sort of connection is nothing short of an expression of ones own pugilistic stance towards foreign powers.

Nowhere in the advisories is there any evidence towards you, or rather your totally not fictitious CIA "contact"'s, claims previously that HP Printers came pre-loaded with malware out of the factory. No evidence was ever presented for that claim and if this is the evidence for that claim it proves nothing other than the fact that the entire thing was, as I said, blown entirely out of proportion. I still am unclear how a remote exploit that could be used to cause a printer to overheat and possibly catch fire was morphed into "the chinese canz steal our dataz".

It's been nearly a year since your initial post. Why has china done nothing with their clearly aggressive attempt to establish a beachhead of printers? Why do you and your friend continue to claim that this has anything to do with China without actually backing it up with anything concrete?

Why do you continue to waste your time and the time of others entertaining your own paranoid delusions? Why do I suspect your CIA friend is in fact entirely fictituous? The title is a bit misleading as if i go back to your Posts from 2 / 3 years ago you also had this happen with a Canon and an Epson.Next year it will be Tablet computers from Korea have built-in cell phone tamers.
Or maybe model airplanes from Malaysia have hidden air anti-aircraft missiles.

Solve : My password not accepted anymore.?

Hello,
This is very STRANGE. My desktop computer will not accept the same and only password I've ever used to start up and log on. Keeps saying it is incorrect. I've shut down the computer and restarted, but the same thing happened. I've never had this happen before. I'm hoping it's not a virus or something BAD. I'm now using my LAPTOP. Any ideas? Lost or forgotten Windows password.Do you mean Windows lost or forgot it? After many, many tries and waiting a while, it finally accepted it. Then I decided to change my password...hope it doesn't happen again. Quote from: stasam on January 22, 2012, 04:03:48 PM

Solve : Broken File Associations?

Answer»

My computer won't let me open anything (Exept for Internet, it's like "What program do you want to RUN this with" and at the bottom is says "Browse the web" and I can click on that and it works. But Microsoft Outlook, Calculator, Microsoft word, nohing. As far as I know, nothing led up to this. But this computer does have several accounts, so maybe one of my family members did something, although it is highly unlikely. My comuter's firewall is up, ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.2 is on, Spyware and unwanted software protection is up.Please provide some information on your system, including the OS and what led up to the PROBLEM (ie, new hw, sw, virus, etc).

Also, this is a support forum - almost everyone who posts here is looking for help. It would be helpful if in the FUTURE you use a subject that is related to your question or problem. Thank you. There, I updated it. That's pretty much all I know. Please do not edit posts to ANSWER questions, just post your reply BELOW the question.

And again, what OS?

And did you run a full system scan with your AV? If not, please do so.

And I renamed the thread to something relevant (instead of "My computer is being weird")OKAY, first of all, you could be alot nicer. Second, oh, I'm so sorry. Third, what the heck is an OS? And fourth, does it really matter?

Do the other user accounts have the same problem? Is there only one account being weird?Sounds like you need to fix the .exe assocation. I found a handy program a while back that did it for me, but I can't find it any more.

Solve : Best TV for viewing pleasure??

Answer»

Just stating a few guidelines I want to be NEAR or ON SPOT with the TV ( * = MANDATORY):

* Flat Panel
       Plasma optional

* under 500$ (Including mount, cheapest mount i found was 25-ish)

* Wall-Mount-able

Decent for viewing 10-20 FT. away

Several inputs, including HDMI, Composite, and Computer

Reliability

[End of Guidelines]

I figured since, technically, tv's are capable of computing, are indirectly computers...

So, as the Subject suggests, What is the best TYPE of TV for viewing pleasure? For the viewing distance your after, you will need something larger than 32 inch screen. A 40 or 42 would be good. Although at 20 ft. away you would want one EVEN larger. I doubt you'll find a true 1080p HD LCD, let alone a plasma TV for $500.00. Just bought a Sharp 42 inch myself. It is the 120 Hz newer type. It was on sale for about $1,300.00.As long as it has good RECEPTIONS, any model, sizes or brand of any model of TV will be highly appreciated.

Solve : Email Overload?

Answer»

A friend called last night to complain that his Yahoo Mail inbox was being stuffed with hundreds of emails a day. Apparently these are legitimate. Most are ads from well known sources (Costco, JC Penney, AT&T ETC). Aside from the one to enlarge his *CENSORED*, there are none from dubious pharmaceutical companies and no porn.

I mentioned that the emails are not physically present on his PC and would not impact his computer. I suggested he call Yahoo and/or keep deleting them as they arrived.

Has ANYONE encountered something similar? Anyone have a solution?

My primary Gmail account suffers from about 20 spam messages a day.
Some are ads, some are company ads, and some are naughty ads.

I changed a setting in Gmail to send the spam DIRECTLY to the trash. Thanks for the reply.

The problem is these emails are not classified as spam, look legitimate and end up in his inbox.

I should also mention that his account is 10 YEARS old and that this just started on Sunday.

Of course it doesn't make sense. That's why I posted the problem. For ten years all he got was the usual assortment of spam, porn and some legitimate email. Now there is a sudden flood of emails coming from legitimate sources.

After talking to him today, I found out that he can delete only one email at a time and the select all checkbox on the Yahoo Mail page does not work.

I still think it is a Yahoo problem, but I thought I'd run it by the members here.

He doesn't have his email listed anywhere or given it out, has he? What about subscribing to websites?

Solve : I need help with my Notebook!!!?

Answer»

Please I need help with my new Notebook HP c6910p. I left it in a car trunk under a very cold weather for about 10 hours. The Cold has damaged the LAPTOP because it has refuse to come on for about three days now and the batter light does not come on anymore when plugged. Please how can I repair it? Thanks
Leave it on the charger overnite with lid closed and try it in the morning...What's very cold? Battery's don't like extremes, try turning it on without it.I tried turning it on but the orange light keeps blinking. I don't know what that meansHow soon, after bringing the laptop inside, did you try to turn it on? Not allowing it time to gradually warm to room temperature before turning it on may have resulted in some condensation of moisture inside the computer. The presence of moisture when you turned on the computer could have caused electrical damage to components. That may be the issue cuz i turned it on few minutes after getting out of the coldRemove the battery from the PC...
Let everything sit in a warm dry place overnite.
In the morning try again with only the AC adapter hooked up...if it WORKS let it warm up for an hour...then power down...reinstall the battery and give it a full 6 hour charge before trying again.it should WORK without the battery, though.

If it does, your battery is shot and you should replace it. Lithium becomes very VOLATILE when exposed to water so you don't want to take any risks with that.

If it doesn't, then charging the battery won't really help resolve the issue I think.

I used one of the sample passwords to try it on an APPLICATION I was using with the intent of later changing it. One distraction led to another and I never reset the password. And now all I can RECALL is that it was a sample of changing the phrase "moose" something. I thought maybe it was mooselip (or mooselips). I've tried many combinations substituting letters for numbers and special characters and mixing case but nothing has taken. I am really puzzled because this seems like it should be so simple to figure out. I recall that the site I was reading was either a Microsoft forum or something very similar and wonder if ANYONE might be familiar with it. I have tried all kinds of searches with no luck.

I use a password keeper program and usually very good about logging & securing but I messed up on this one and there is no reset option.

Thanks. So what is your issue exactly ? Is it now that you have some aspect of access that you cannot access because it is password protected by a password you created and now cannot remember. Is that the issue? Often the protected program or whatever has a process for those that have forgotten a password (not to retrieve it) but to change it. Is that option available in this case. truenorthHello Truenorth,

Yes, that is correct. I need to access this app and it has no password recovery means. It is freeware and it did come with the explicit warning about this. I use a password vault and usually very good about adding records to it but messed up on this one.

As mentioned in my post I am about 99% certain that the password used was a sample one from the site where I was reading about (IRONICALLY) creating passwords that are secure but easy to recall.

FAIRLY certain that it was a substitution for "moose" something and thought it came from a Microsoft site. Was hoping that possibly someone else had read the article and might recall where they saw it.
It may be help us help you if we knew what app was password protected in the first place...The Microsoft site in question may be in your browsing History...I clear my browsing history quite often. This was a little too long ago but thanks for the suggestion. Solve : HELP! Pages keep printing all black?

Answer»

I'm an office assistant in a small architectural firm (when I say small-I mean there are only 4 employees INCLUDING myself). We have a Xerox 510 wide format plotter. We received some PDF files/drawings to print but when I try printing them there is nothing but a black page. I would NORMALLY think something was wrong with the plotter but it was just serviced yesterday, and other drawings print just fine. This has happened to one of our clients to whom I sent pdf drawings. When he tried to print them at his FACILITY he had the same problem. I have no idea what the problem is and it's been left up to me to figure it out-PLEASE HELP!

I usually use the Enter key or the space bar.

DEFINITION: Any key: From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A button would be something you click with the mouse like a URL.I mostly use enter, but if it says it somewhere not in a batch file (like in linux or somewhere weird) I SOMETIMES press a random letter just to test it lol I usually hit the space bar.

There are REPORTS that some users have searched for such a key labelled "any", and called technical support when they have been unable to find it.[2] The computer company Compaq[3] even edited their FAQ to explain that the "any" key does not exist,[4][5] and at one point considered replacing the command "Press any key" with "Press return key".[6]
I find that just as depressing...I have actually had one of these calls at the helpdesk, the person was looking for the "any" key. After trying to explain for about 2 minutes I just told them to press the space bar.
They then wanted to know why the SYSTEM told them to press "the any key" and not the space bar....

Solve : Buttons on Monitor?

Answer»

For some REASON the buttons on the front of my Dell monitor quit working, is there another WAY to adjust the monitor? what do you want to do? change the contrast or something? Or are you just wanting to TURN monitor on and off, which you can do with a powerstrip easily. The on/off button still works...it's the adjustment buttons that don't. I don't understand why they quit..it's only 4 yrs old & I hardly use the buttons.
So, is there a way to adjust color, contrast, size,ETC without using the buttons?

Thankyou

I must ask, was that a joke?I FOUND one of his comments (Hawkings') to further exemplify the depth of the great man's intellect when he pronounced that an ongoing enigma to him was his total lack of comprehension of how the female mind works (or words to that effect). I PRESUME this is NOT a recently arrived at conundrum but that he is only revealing it at this juncture of his life on the occasion of this particular anniversary of his birth. For most of us of the male gender it is my personal observation that this dilemma has always existed (at least as long as there have been BLACK holes in space). Thee is no basis for doing the above. The current Firefox is 9 and is works very well on older computers. But it you want a more spartan browser, try Opera or Sea Monkey.

The one single thing you can do to improve the performance would be to up grade to 256 MB of ram. You presently have only 128 MB. You will notice the difference.

If you back step to Windows 98 SE you will find some nice programs will not run on Windows 98 SE. Some new programs require the C++ run time library, which does not work on OS earlier Windows XP sp3.

Quote
Supported Operating Systems: Windows 7, Windows Server 2003 R2 x64 editions, Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2008 R2, Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2, Windows Vista Service Pack 2, Windows XP Service Pack 3
From MS support for current C++n run time.

Keep XP SP3 and add some RAM. There's no way Windows XP SP 3 is going to run with only 128MB of RAM. You need at least 512MB RAM or it'll swap all day long.
There's also no POINT in any Windows OS that's out-phased by Microsoft if you want to go on-line, you'll just be an easy target for viruses.

Why don't you use Linux?

i think im getting that one thats like the best i could get right thereLaptops arent meant for gaming.

Yes, there are gaming laptops, but, the problem you will ultimately run into that you will regret:
In a year, its going to be outdated. You can upgrade the video card about once, and then they change the card interface again.

With a desktop PC, you can almost always continue to upgrade. Not to mention, PC's will always have more hard drive and memory support than laptops.

I paid $1024 (including Tax) for my laptop... 1.73GHz processor, 120GB HDD, Vista Home Premium, 1GB RAM (now 2GB), and a 128MB nVidia GeForce GO 7300 video card... point is, its now highly outdated, and worth only about $500-600.

The PC version of this would probably have been around $700, and at the very least, I could upgrade the hard drive to 500GB for a relatively cheap price, the RAM up to 4GB, and a new video card... and I could keep UPGRADING every two years or so for about $100 for at least four years before it would be pointless to continue where I might as well buy a new PC due to un-upgradable parts such as the front side bus.

Look into what you are investing in. I got a laptop for visual studio 2008 and vista... but what do ya know it runs games faster then my other PC. probably on account of being a dualcore that's almost twice the speed in each core and quadruple the RAM.but then again who cares if a computer is oudated if you an do what you want to do on it and be happy?

My computer is probably outdated, it's got a single core AthloAMD athlon64 3500+ processor, 2.75gb memory, a 9500GT 512mb graphics card and and a 200 gb hard drive.

Well as long as you're not breaking the BANK to play Crysis, then that's good

None. If you ask me, developer time is better spent adding new features than trying to add some futile protection scheme.

the idea being that one could justify ignoring piracy on the basis that the new feature could very well have attracted new customers and made the revenue stream stronger than it would have been if "piracy protection" was the feature that was added, since that has no consumer value whatsoever, and may in fact drive off potential customers. And there is the additional cost of more support as your piracy protection scheme fires off for legitimate customers. Thanks BC_programmer. Excellent concept. Developers, TAKE heed! Many companies have spent millions (Disney, News Corp, the NFL, Time Warner, SONY, Viacom, etc.) and gotten nowhere.

Solve : Post Upgrade Checklist?

Answer»

I have recently UPGRADED my computer and replaced everything except the case and eventually replaced it with a Coolermaster because the NEW system ran hotter than my old system. I am having an audio-video SYNC problem with every program I use to run video (Nero7, Vegas Movie Studio 8, Windows Media Player). The video runs smoothly but is just out of sync. I know the basic things to do like updating drivers but could someone give me a checklist or send me a link of everything that should be done after upgrading so I can rule out the basic things that may cause this problem?

These are my system specs

OS - XP Home Edition 2002 Version SP3
Processor - AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 5600+ 2.91 GHz
RAM - 3.5 GB
MB - ASUS M2N-E
HD - WD 250 GB SATA
VC - NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512First, are you using the same hard drive as before? and if so, did you just stick it into the new computer?
If you did, thats the most of the problem.

Have you tried uninstalling all of the video and sound drivers, then restarting the computers?
And did you search for the individual drivers on the manufacturer WEBSITE? Or use the ones that came on a CD or the ones provided by Windows?

Thanks for the quick reply. I am using a hard drive that I had PREVIOUSLY used with another system. Are you saying I shouldn't use it at all or are you saying I should erase it before I use it?
About the drivers, should I use the ones that came on disk or get them from the manufacturers website? Quote from: Zorgon on January 29, 2009, 07:08:50 PM

What is the make and model of your computer? What Operating System are you using?
Does the issue occur in all browsers or in just one?

If you want to stress-test your system to check for errors you might want to use the following PROGRAMS:
IntelBurnTest for your CPU: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/IntelBurnTest.shtml Run it on Standard, 1024MB, for 10 passes. If your system GETS unstable in the process it will tell you.
Furmark for your Graphics card: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/FurMark.shtml Run the 720p benchmark. If your system gets unstable there will be artifacting on the screen or the picture will freeze.
MemTest86+ for your RAM: http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Benchmarks/Memtest86-plus.shtml Run it for 10 passes. It will indicate if there is a read/write error if your RAM is faulty.

Solve : General Question about SQL Server?

Answer»

Hey guys. I'm currently looking for jobs and it seems that there is a real need for people with SQL Server experience. How should I go about LEARNING SQL and related DATABASE systems? Do I need to go back to schoo? Is a free online tutorial enough? Thanks in advance for your comments.

-FlipDatabases, SQL, MySQL, etc. are definitely not on the top of the easy list when it COMES to setting up and maintaining. Depending on what the jobs entail may determine what kind of experience you may need.

If you're simply maintaining and/or submitting information into the SQL database learning about it online and/or through books *may* be enough.

However, I'd imagine that most jobs that are looking for those familiar with databases / SQL are going to want either some form of education or personal experience. I'm personally a fan of personal experience and one of the best ways of doing that (if you've got the means) would be to setup your own SQL database practice with maintaining it, creating entries, deleting entries, interfacing it with other scripts, programs, and other databases.

If you've got your own website, setup a forum, NEWSLETTER, shopping cart, etc. that relies on database to handle users and entries.

So creating/maintaining a database in my website would be the best bet? Even over going to school?

Either way, that sounds like really good advice. Anything is better than forking out thousands to go back to school. I appreciate your help.Well depends on your learning style and what you can get your hands on. Personally I learn better hands on then reading a book and many times even over school.

If you're able to setup your own SQL database and use it on your wesbsite I think it would be a great form of learning, you could even top it off with reading a book SQL book at the same time.

Maintaining a database may not also be your forte, so experimenting and reading about it first could also save you a lot of money if you come to find out it's something you don't like doing.

the file of directory C:\Documents and Settings\RAC\Local Settings\Application Data\AOL\UserProfiles\1153017290\rac\metrics is corrupt and unreadable. PLEASE run the Chddsk utility.
Based on your RESPONSE...you may want to go into Add/Remove programs and look for any AOL software installed on your computer.

If you do not intend to use any of the AOL software installed, including, but not limited to AOL, AOL Instant Messenger, etc., etc...you may want to remove these from your computer.

Running chkdsk may not be necessary since removing these programs may fix the problem. If the uninstall process prompts you to save any USER files, uncheck the files so that they will not be saved.

Please post back with any results...that seemed to work....the message is gone. i deleated everything aol and then rebooted. chkdsk ran before my computer came back up. thank u soo much! You're welcome...

So far since I took the newer stick of Memory out my computer has been running fine, the only thing is that when it freezes up is completely random so I dont really know how long to test it for, but lately its been freezing up more and more.. I'm going to leave it out for a week or so and then order some more if it does turn out to be the problem. Its frozen twice with the new stick out now, so I stuck the new one in and took out the old one.. it froze up even faster.. also with the new stick out when I played Call of Duty 2 it froze for the first time.. 2nd I was browsing the internet, any more suggestions?Maybe found the problem, sometimes when I restart my computer the monitor doesnt get a signal back, everything is plugged in good.. and I know its not the video card or monitor, because on my old video card and monitor it did the same thing.. someone SAID it sounds like the motherboard isnt booting when it does that, so could the motherboard be causing that and the freezing?

The volume on my computer is not working. I have checked my volume contro settings, virtual volume is on, my sound is at full blast and I don't hear anything on my computer. Any advice WOULD really help.I know it sounds OBVIOUS, but is it plugged in correctly? (the power and the sound plugs both should be checked)
They should be plugged into a green socket

Did you try headphones where you would normally plug in the speakers? If headphones dont work, then its not a problem with the speakers you have.

After ruling out that its not your speakers or connection issues:

Find the My Computer icon (either on the DESKTOP, or in the start menu)
Right click it, and click "Properties"
Navigate yourself to the Hardware tab, and click "Device Manager"
Find your sound driver, and double click it, and click the "Driver" tab, and then click "Reinstall"
If you have multiple drivers listed in your sound, and cannot FIGURE out which is the right one, it wont hurt to reinstall all the drivers.

Still wont work?
Tell us what operating system you have. (eg. WINDOWS XP, Vista, ME, 2000, 98, 95, NT, 3.11, 3.1, 3.0)

Topic moved from Off Topic to Others I have a toshiba laptop computer with windows xp, in case that helps. Your other tips haven't helped but thanks for trying.

Solve : I need a new desktop media player, stat!?

Answer»

Hey all, I USED to use Music Match for my DESKTOP music player and I really liked how it was set up. It listed all of my MP3s (all legally downloaded, of COURSE ) and I could pick and choose what I wanted to play very easily. Well, Music Match is apparently gone for good now, taken over and renamed Yahoo Music, and I hate it, it just isn't as easy to use. I tried Windows Media Player also, and will use it if I can't find anything else, but I don't really CARE for it either. Does anyone have any suggestions for FREE media players that are really easy to use?TRY this out:
http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=mmatch
It has MusicMatch on it

Other players? Some people like Winamp, but personally, I like Windows Media Player 11 (WMP11)
If its not detecting your music, open WMP11 and press F3VLC...or GOM.

Both free.

Solve : Flashing Screen (animated objects)?

Answer»

I'm having a problem with my computer and I don't really know too much about it. A couple of days ago my computer stopped working and my fiance rebooted the system and know when I'm viewing a web SITE that has MOVING objects the scren flashes a few times then a box flashes around the moving objects. I tried to download a free scan and fix utility, but it didn't work out so WELL. Can someone please help? I'm going nutz ThanxWhat free scan and fix utility did you use?

Also, when you get to a flashing object, click on it once.

Is this happening on all websites, or just once? If its only on one, could you give us a link?

Are these flash animations?

What operating system are you using? (When you start your computer, does it say something like "Windows XP"?)
What internet BROWSER are you using? Internet Explorer?
Edit:
Glarysoft is verified source, free, and apparently does not contain adware/viruses....Glary utilities was the scan and fix utility

I have tried to click on the Icons but unless it links me to another page, it does NOTHING. It happens on all web sites. even the little smilies above the message box in the reply section are flashing.

I'm not sure if they are flash animations to be honest

I'm running Windows Millenium and Internet explorer 6I recommend running Windows Updates to see if there is a newer version of Internet Explorer.
To run Windows Updates: Open Internet Explorer, click Tools> "Windows Update"

Solve : IBM i Series 1452 laptop?

Answer»

Hey all I just got a laptop and I was wondering what OS I should put on it. I TRIED putting Ubuntu on it and Puppy Linux but it didn't want to boot the disk and I tried installing Xp but that wouldn't work either. So I was wondering if anyone has a DIFFERENT operating system I should try on it?Why dont you tell us what you have in the way of RAM, CPU Power, and hard disk space?

I have found Open SuSe interesting, Download here ) I also have a few friends who recommend Red Hat Linux (google it...)

I hear that Red Hat has great driver support, and so does Ubuntu. Just try a few, and see what you like

What happened when you tried Ubuntu?
Odly enough Ubuntu just booted for me , ERR well still in the process of booting but farthest its ever made it. So I might go ahead and just install that. The hard drive is only around 3 gigs, 128mbs ram, and not sure how much Cpu power yet.Ubuntu requires (minimum) at least 200MB of RAM, to just start the installer. 200 is the (i think) unrecommended amount for ACTUALLY running the OS. You will need to find an alternative installer if the installer wont work. Well that explains why it wouldn't instal LOL! IM trying puppy linux on it right now, im probably gonna get another stick of ram for it eventually. If worse comes to worse, you can always put win98 on it. It can run in as little as 16 megs and was probably the original FODDER for the beast. Im going to try Windows 2000 on it, and if that fails i'll put 98se on lol. By the way the laptop has 366mhz of pure processing power.I have an old IBM 390E with about the same processing speed and 256M ram. It has 2K pro on it. It is a tad slow but runs very well, and surfing/email and mundane tasks are fast enough on my DSL and router.

Solve : I really don't know what should i do......?

Answer»

Last week i came back home and turn on my PC (never open it for a long time coz i'm leaving with my friends). First, the PC is OK for a few minutes and suddenly a blue screen APPEARS. I forgot what it says coz it's is too long, but i remember one of the cause stated on the screen is about installing a new hardware that cause the problem which i did nothing before the blue screen message come out...what hardware? I didn't do anything....i ask my friend and they told me it's probably the RAM. I changed the slot and then restart the PC again. Then, only the fan of the CPU is working....every other things just shut off. I restart again, then a buzzing sound came out.Buzz.....Buzz.....Buzz....Then i turn it of. When i restart again, same as the first time. Only the CPU fan is working. What should i do.......?

By the way....is this the place where i should POST this question?...or there is other suitable section or place?

Thank You fro all your help. Topic moved from Off Topic section.

Huh?
What exactly did you do, and can you get the PC to do anything at all?
Does it get to the BIOS screen?
What did you do to the RAM?If it set unused for a long time you MUST clean and
reseat your heatsink and CPU sometimes.I have 2 PCs...one at home and one with me which i told you i'm staying with my friends(I'm at college, rent house). I didn't used the one at home till now...i really want to clean it up but not enough tools and materials such as thermal paste for the processor...for the RAm part...i just TAKE it out and put in in a new slot...it didn't work...and put it back in the first slot...and nothing happen also...Bios?....how am i able to reach the BIOS?....i told you guys...when i switch on...only the fan of the CPU is running...nothing happen...yesterday i switch on...and a sound came out.....
beeepp.....beeeppp.....beeeppp....my friend told me the sound is because the RAM...is it true...by the way...thanks guys...for helping and your opinion...does anyone have experienced this problem or this is the first time that you heard of it...and it makes me the first one...haiyaaa....If you get continuous beeps when booting then most likely it is the RAM. To make sure, reseat all your expansion cards (if any) like video, sound, NIC, RAM, power to the motherboard. Clean out the case with compressed air. Now try it. Still got the problem, get some other RAM.

Alan <>< Thanks ale52 for the advice...i'll try...

Solve : music downloader will not connect...?

Answer»

Hello again everyone
I have another problem lol I have this thing called Morpheus MP3, it's where you can download music and all.. And when you get online you start the program an all and it connects and then you can download music. Ok well lately it will not CONNECT and I can't figure out why... I'm not sure if there is a firewall or something blocking the program from accessing the internet or what but I have even downloaded other file-SHARING programs and none can connect. So if anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. and this is a Dell desktop, dimension 2400 running windows xp home edition with service pack 2. ThanksDo you have a firewall installed on your computer? If so, can you please tell us what is installed...

Be cautious when it comes to P2P (Peer-to-Peer) programs like Morpheus...

When you ALLOW file sharing, you're leaving your computer open for potential threats. Also, when you download a file from another person's computer, are you absolutely sure you know what you're downloading and/or sharing?

All I can say is...stay away from these types of programs...you're just asking for trouble.Yes I think the firewall is BSafe Online... We also have AVG Virus protection, the free version. It might also have a firewall, i'm not sureCheck to see if BSafe is blocking the Morpheus connection.

Also make sure you're only using one firewall prgram. Windows XP has its own built in firewall. It should be turned off if you are using another third-party firewall program.

You should be able to open BSafe to see what programs are being allowed and which are being blocked. If Morpheus is being blocked, or a certain part of the Morpheus program is being blocked, this may be causing the issue.

If Morpheus is connecting, but won't download the file, there may be the possibility the file being downloaded is INFECTED and your AVG antivirus program is blocking the download as well.Alright I'll try that... Thanks

Solve : Help figuring out what's wrong with my computer?

Answer»

I have a computer that just stopped working one day. I mean I couldn't upload my Windows XP, and I couldn't use my DVD.
The POST and BIOS looks fine, and EVERYTHING seems to be working properly by the sound of the thing.
The computer was only a few months old.
I have taken the PC Repair PROGRAM, so I have lots of info to work with if anyone can help me. Thanks so much. AudreyFrom your post it's rather HARD to say what the EXACT problem is.
You need to explain little bit better what exactly happens.

Solve : How to crack latop BIOS Password??

Answer»

I have a laptop IBM T30, when you enter the bios they will tell you to type the CMOS=(BIOS) Password. How? We cannot help with this kind of problem here, cracking/hacking is not approved by this forum. It's against this board policy to help with illegal activities. In order to enter the password, depress each KEY consisting of the password characters in sequence. Note that it is IMPORTANT that you FULLY release each key before proceeding to the next.

If you need practice, try starting notepad and practicing pushing, and then fully releasing keys in ssequence. Then MOVE on to words, and finally to useful phrases, such as "Read the forum rules".Topic Closed.

Is that for XP, Nathan?

Yeah that's what I've only had the chance to test it in so far.Not bad. I got a bunch of updates listed as well.

I think it listed maybe half my programs. I wonder what the PROGRAM 'Copy' is...... hehI don't think it will list programs that are installed but never "registered" an uninstaller... Not a lot do this, though.

Also- I appear to have a few programs whose "UNINSTALL" ENTRIES are under HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKLM.i mean proper programmes that you donwloaded form the WEB , not add on's or extra's only proper programmes84 in programs and features

Solve : Understanding Mediabase MSG?

Answer»

Hi Guys, it's me again. This time I need someone to try and help me with what someting MIGHT mean. Okay, it's about Mediabase again. As you may recall, I use Mediabase to request MUSIC of radio stations. However mediabase was hacked and so they placed measures to try and stopped hackers I guess.

So now the message below comes up if you try and post more than once per hour. And I get this message even though, I don't post twice per hour . So then they must be using the 2ND part of the message to prohibit me. This is what I don't get. What does the last sentence mean. What ORGANIZATION are they talking about?

============= MSG from Mediabase=============

It appears that a request for this station has already been made from your ip address within the last hour. Please allow at lease one hour from your last submission and try again (NOTE: if you are sure that you did not make any requests for this station within the last hour and you are behind a FIREWALL then it is possible that the request has been submitted by someone else in your organization).

===================

More info:

I am the only person who uses my computer. I do have a firewall. I do use dial-up (I know, I know). While there are two desk tops in the home they are on separate lines and at any rate, I am the only person using MB in the house.

Thanks all
