Have you restarted?yes thats a screen shot showing my computer and yes I have restarted many many times since this happened OPEN Windows Explorer.
Go ToolsFolder Options>File Types>SELECT 'Drive'>Advanced button>Change Icon
It should be pointing to c:\windows\system32\shell32.dll. Once I get to folder options I have a choice of General, View and Search thats it no file types , no advanced button no change icon Oh, I'm sorry, you're with Vista.

Ive RECENTLY changed my o/s to ntfs from fat32, for many diffrent reasons.
but now since i have done this iam unable to format my computer,

my usual meathod of formating is with win98.
i use the win98, and boot from start up,

then usually away i go, format my comp then STICK xp in,
Ive never had a prob doing it this way since i changed my o/s.
now everytime Ive tried to format my computer, it comes up with an error report
saying invalid disk drive or somet, i have tried everything i can, then some, and i cant find
a way round this, and as you can imagine it is beginning too do my head in...

any help you guys can offer me to sort this little problem out would be greatly appreciated..

You can use the XP CD to format your hard drive.in the blue screen (press delete on boots-up)
on time SETTING there , i think is press "F3" for -- detect all device

check if it detect ur hard disk ....
eventhough i'm not sure it can help u or notwhat?Use the 'formatter' in the windows XP setup/boot disk.

After inspecting and loading drivers, just continue through until you see your partitions there, and delete the appropriate one, and install on the new, blank partition

And by the way, WIN 98 cannot "see" the existing NTFS partiton(s), so as far as it knows, there is nothing there.

Anyone having problems with mcafee site adviser icons disappearing? I uninstalled and reinstalled, it works fine for a day or two than the search icons (green check, red x) disappears. I have a few questions. 1) Can i buy any hard drive on the market or does my hard drive and graphics card have to link up in one of these (512MB, GDDR3, 256-Bit, 2200MHZ, 675 MHZ coreclock, PCI Express 2.0 x 16, Direct x 10, Shader 4.0)? 2)Same at first but for my motherboard?
3)is my graphics card my GPU or is that totally different and if totally different what is it?

Thank you so much for your help and your time 1) You have to buy a hard drive that is compatible with your motherboard. Most newer motherbords support SATA and PATA drives. The interface of the hard drive is important as you cant use a SATA drive with a PATA controller and vice versa.

If you are going to buy a new board I would suggest getting a SATA Hard drive. Sata is new faster technology. You may see PATA referred to as IDE or EIDE.

2) Your video card will only fit in a motherboard that has a PCI express slot. Most newer boards have that slot but some do not. Your card will not work with a motherboard that has an AGP video slot.

3)Your Graphics card is your GPU.hey m8. if ur only gonna use the comp for gaming, and you are an amature when it comes to comps, ( no offense lol ) id just go out and buy one m8, trying to build one your self, from scratch, will be evil, most shops u go to can custom build to your perferd specs,

recomened minimum spec for a gaming pc, i would go for,

processor - 2.4gig duel. ( id prob choose intel )
graphsics - nvidia 512mb pci, dnt use agp, there almost obsolete,
memory - 2gig, ddr
harddrive - at least 160gig
soundcard, dnt really matter, for most games, the INBUILT one will do fine
motherboard - again dnt really matter, just make sure it compatible with a pci graphics.

thats pretty much all you need for a gaming pc m8.. u should be ABLE to pick it up for around 3/350
if ur willing to spread out more, recomend upgrading the top 3, there the main hardware for smooth gaming..

the spec above will pretty much run anygame available, hope this helpted.IsuckATcomputers,

I would disregard the info given by Scooby. I applaud the fact that you are wanting to build your own comp and you have picked a great site to ask for help.

The motherboard does matter because if you get the wrong one you will be limited to what you can do.

What I would suggest you do is let the people here know how much you are willing to spend and what you already have.

Ram - This should be at minimum DDR2 PC6400/800mhz
You already have a video card
Hard Drive a 1 TeraByte drive is quite cheap these days.
CD/DVD drive - You will want a CD and DVD writer combo drive
Mouse
Keyboard
Operating system - XP still provides a faster gaming platform, however with your specs, Vista will perform just fine.

the FOUR possible answers are.
(A) - Modern pc's don't need resources to be assigned.
(B) - ACPI assigns resources automatically.
(C) - PCI buses automatically CONFIGURE DMA.
(D) - Resource assignment is password protected at Administrator level.

My computer is self destructing, I did not renew my subscription to RegCure and everything has been going south since. I am no longer even able to log in. I know I am loaded with viruses. I was in the middle of a VirusScan re-install with McAfee when I lost internet access. Now it's to the point that I can no longer log on. When I TRY to do an OS repair/ restore using manufacture's disk I get error messages that CERTAIN files do not pass the windows logo test, i say to copy anyway but then install does not finalize. I don't know where to start, I don't necessarily want to reformat the whole drive. Can anyone guide me in what steps to take using dos commands?
I am running XP home.

I have inherited a restored Dell Optiplex GX2 and am now trying to get it to speed up a bit. Its running XP Pro but only has 128MB of ram (with a whopping 7gig HDD ) and on a wireless connection. It's PERFECT for surfing the web which is why I wanted it but I wouldn't mind speeding up the download speeds a bit and be able to do two things at the same time . I would like to get it up to at least 512MB.

From what I'm told I need:

PC700: 16-bit, single channel RIMM
Or
PC800: 16-bit, single channel RIMM

Some time back my WIFES computer when it was down loading some up dates from Microsoft things went bad. It would not finish up DATING them. I wold get the Configuring updates stage 1 of 3 0 % complete. This kept up for about SIX hours. I tried starting in safe mode and that only made things worse. No matter what I did it looked like I was in safe mode but it didn't say safe mode. Since I coldn't get any thing to work I reinstalled Vista and all the other stuff that she had on her computer. All was fine till Friday. It was down loading up dates then shut down the computer and the same thing happened. I tried to shut down the computer and it went back to the Configuring updates mode again. Oh, Windows Live One Care shut down and wold not work. I reinstalled Vista and put all the stuff back on her computer. This time I changed virus protection to Avast. When I was down loading some of her pictures I got a worning that I had malware and it confined it to the chest. Was this problem caused by the up dates from Microsoft or was there a bug and One care didn't pick it up?

I have 37 3GPP movie files on my computer, which iv saved to an external HARDDRIVE. Iv tried to open the on both the laptop and harddrive and i just get an error message saying

Error 2010 the movie contains some invalid data. Vid 35 3gp

Is there anyway i can play these movies, to SEE whats on them. We recenlty lost a lot of pictures and movies from another laptop and i cant bear to loose more, ESPECIALLY of our daughter and my late grandad.

i really need help.. i have kodak easy share camera and dock and i have about 3000 pics on it on my computer :' and something HAPPENED to my computer it restored its self and then did some kind of recovery thing not really sure what happened i dont know much about it. but anyways i can see all of my pictures in the kodak program but when i CLICK on them to edit or print etc... a message comes up and SAY that the file may have been moved or renamed in the windows file system and some say the file exsits but may be damaged i have tried these programs but no luck with them.. pc tools fix it, avanguest fix it 8, pc inspecter smart recovery, and disk internals recovery 2.1, i really need help i dont know what else to do... this pictures are very important to me my wedding, the birth of my daughter...etc.... please help!!!!!!!!!

hmm....computers dont generally decide to restore themselves, nethier do they do recovery themselves.

I could do with knowing EXACTLY what you did so that i can help.we were trying to restore the computer to a earlier time and when it was finished it said that it was corrupted and then it just started doing a recovery thing not sure exactly what. it took my computer back to when we got it but there are some things still on there that we added after we had it.. i hope that helps

whenever i switch on my pc it directly does not entering into the DESKTOP,it asks for a (boot from CD...a disk read error occured) and i have to spend nearly half an hour to rectify this problem.. what could be the problem? :(please give me a clear solution What OPERATING SYSTEM?

I tired to connect to a local connection an it sees it but when it TEST the connection it COMES up. error CODE 52230 unable to connect to server an it doesnt see any other connections expect the one I thought I COULD use. Also, there is no wireless in the house just the area.went to the site tring to troubleshoot it, mite try an GET a tv at my grandmother house in my room or something then, not sure the distance it can pick the singals up at.

More than once, for a few days in a row the phone will ring but when I pick up no ONE is there. Could it be that some telemarketers have a tool that does this as revenge for hanging up on them? which I sometimes do. Does anyone know any good web sites devoted to this? And-recently after saying "not interested have a nice day" and hanging up I got several calls where the voice said "you have a land line MESSAGE from-( I forget what number ) press 1 to listen." When I did a voice said "who is this" and after a few of these I said "who the *censored* is this!" and I immediatly got a call with no one there. Sounds like someone is toying with you.

When you pick up the phone, be as silent as you can and see if the person on the other line hangs up.I've got a few calls like this as well there are some automated systems out there that seem to have a few issues. There really isn't too much (I believe) that can be done about it, but know an issue exists out there because I've googled the number coming through on the caller ID and found several posts about that number. Automated systems amaze me. Predictive DIALING may be causing the system to call you more than once.
Some people play the call tone that tells the dialer that the number no longer exists.

If you have caller ID, and if you have the number, consider blocking it. That, or dial a certain number (I CANT remember, I think its *69, another forum member may verify this, it will tell you the last caller) to FIND out what the number is. i always try to sell them a subscription to "The Province" newspaper.I get calls like this too once and a while.

I have an eMachines factory restore disk (Windows XP) that I'm trying to rebuild into a slipstream/customized version using nlite... But the example I saw when someone was using nlite used a retail copy of Windows XP so I"m a little confused....

Has anyone EVER successfully slipstreamed an OEM disk using nlite....I don't wan't to spend hours on a wild goose chase if this will by no means work.

Or better yet, has anyone ever slipstreamed an OEM disk, PERIOD?

I have been having with the Ebay website for SEVERAL days now. I look SOMETHING up and I can't get past the first page. I click the link to advance to page number two and it comes back to page one. I have no problem with the other sites, just this one.Did this feature work before?

I haven't made any changes to the settings.. I contacted Ebay about this thinking that it might be on their website. They (Ebay) said to clear the cache. I'll try that and if it doesn't work I'll get back to you.

Hopefully a quick and easy question. I just got a new computer and in unpacking it there was just one protective sticker that I couldn't get off (see pic (which i got to transfer from my cellphone with the new BLUETOOTH on my new laptop ). It's on the HP SYMBOL on the top of the laptop and I just want to make sure it's actually a protective film.
It seems like a film where there's an obvious edge where more of the light escapes. As well as there's something of a scratch mark under the h (that was there before) that you see when you start leaving the protective film on for too long.

I'm just asking because I seem completely unable to take it off. Also as writing this I realized that normally those kinds of films are normally BIGGER than what they cover, not less, so that it actually protects it. I haven't used ANYTHING too rigid that WOULD scratch the laptop because, well, I don't want to scratch it. All of my attempts just seem ineffectual.

So any opinions? Anyone else buy a HP laptop with the same kind of light on the top?

Put cost aside.
I run a small at home business and will need to be ABLE to produce nice invoices, business cards, keep my books, run a couple of websites, quality pics for the website, networking and of course a little gaming (though if the new Diablo ever comes out, WELL.......)
Also, some time in the future I hope for a brick and mortar store and the computer would have to go with me.
Right now I'm using a Toshiba Satellite. I like it okay but it's my husband's, so I am not at liberty to configure things my way.
I'm kind of LEANING toward a Mac, (I'm not really sure why. Maybe it has something to do with my first computer experience on an Apple IIE, I don't know. Anyway..... I thought if you could send TEXT MESSAGES you should be able to send a fax?That would only work if your connect card can access a phone line.You may need Fax software depending on the OS...
