Solve : Need RDRAM?

Answer»

Anybody happen to have any RDRAM? Ancient I know but it's what I need.

I have inherited a restored Dell Optiplex GX2 and am now trying to get it to speed up a bit. Its running XP Pro but only has 128MB of ram (with a whopping 7gig HDD ) and on a wireless connection. It's PERFECT for surfing the web which is why I wanted it but I wouldn't mind speeding up the download speeds a bit and be able to do two things at the same time . I would like to get it up to at least 512MB.

From what I'm told I need:

PC700: 16-bit, single channel RIMM
Or
PC800: 16-bit, single channel RIMM

Here is a thread with more details if anyone is interested. http://www.computer-juice.com/forums/f43/new-ram-advice-please-20277/

I'm not crazy about buying used memory but I'm also not crazy about spending a fortune on something I really don't have to have so would like to find some at a decent price. And I'm not 100% sure exactly what I need.

Are you trying to say your above such technologies or that you have a really bad sense of time?

In any case- is that RamBus DRAM? because those are the most expensive kind of RAM. Partly due to Rambus's agressive marketing. I imagine they are much cheaper now, but getting them new could be troublesome....

still expensive- at least here:

If you aren't able to get more RAM for the machine, you could install an older OS- like 98SE. It runs great on 128MB of RAM, and it should fit the bill for SIMPLY BROWSING the web.I agree about it running 98 well. The thing is I'm trying to finally retire my old Win 98 or you could run Windows 2000 on it, as well- 128MB is a good amount- not the best for W2K, but it works better then XP with it, I assume.Buying that would probably be almost as much as a stick of 512 RDRAM.

I have exactly $0.00 in this right now so I figure spending $100-125 on it won't be such a bad deal. Just not ready to shell that out yet. Thought there might be a long shot someone would have some lying around for a better price then what I can find at the online shops.Sorry, I've not come across any in my usual shopping.
I also don't have any lying around, I've never encountered it for real.I think I have 8 sticks of 512mb and 4 of 256mb at work, but I can't sell them because they're not mine. Not sure if I could give them to you though. hmmph, I guess either way it would be considered unethical.

Edit: Just read the thread from the other forum. The blank circuit board next to the other ram is called a blank. It is necessary for rdram to have all of the available slots filled and the blank can be used if only one ram module is available. I thought that it was necessary to have modules installed in pairs, with the exact same speed and size, but apparently a blank can be substituted in that case as well. Thanks for the update on that odd looking stick!

I read somewhere that with this ram that you can mix and match so your explanation fits right in with the article I read.

I have found a few online but I'm just hesitant about buying used for the prices they want. I think I found a few brand new but it's just too much. The used is expensive enough.Try checking some of the local computer shops in your town. I'll bet that a few of them may have some. The local shop I buy stuff through at work has several just laying around.
