Solve : searching for files?

Answer»

Sometimes when I try to open a file, I get a a flashlight that appears to be SEARCHING for the file. It usually takes 20 or 30 seconds for the file to open. What's up with that? You PROBABLY NEED to run defrag on that drive and/or free up some space...
How big is the drive and how much free space do you have ? ?Total size 145 GB, Free space 111 Gb. Also I defrag regularly.

Solve : about window media player?

Answer»

On window media player, every time i try playing SONGS,it always asks to download LICENSE first,

Example: A license is required to play this file

The file you are trying to play was ripped (copied) from an audio CD.

During the ripping process, the file was "protected." This limits the number of computers on which the file can be played.

To play the file on this computer, you must download a license (a process known as "license migration"). A license acts an electronic key that allows you to "unlock" a protected file and play it.

and says: Error: your Netscape browser does not have "Microsoft® Windows Media Services" plug-ins installed.

To download a license for this file, click Download License.

i had tried to downloading these license but says it is already installed. the songs i have are from mp3, MWA, wma etc.....

Q: What can i do to open these songs? thanksSounds like in the settings of your ripping it is set to rip with protection. You need to set this to not protect the files. If you need help with that just ask. Have you tried to download the licence with another browser like firefox?I need INSTRUCTION on how to do this step by step? On how to go and unset those files that are protected to not protected?

I'm just learning here,

Thanks in advance!Do you buy Original OS from Window? Because if you bought original OS, you will not find download license.
And you can update to high version from WMP.
Have you ever tried to download license? and what is the result? What amp do you have? It will be mostly the same for every version
wmp 11
right click on the bar where now playing is
go to tools>options
go to the rip music tab
untick the COPY protect music

It should be the same like for wmp9 just go to the tools>options menu this is all it says every time i fnish downloading it : Error: your Netscape browser does not have "Microsoft® Windows Media Services" plug-ins installed.Have you tried firefoxthat's what i use firefox and windows internet explorer, can't seem to get it.Have you tried installing this?
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/forpros/drm/pluwiz.aspxthe DRM for windows Media Player just came out as an Update if you have it .
Another Helpful Hint;
. Open media player, click on RIP, Go Down to More Options, Click to open and under your Rip Settings, Unclick the Copy Protect Music box thanks again to everyone. you guys have been helpful.

Solve : eeprom xbox?

Answer»

hi i have a moded xbox but when i try to switch the settings like video settings audio settings network settings etc. it says will not write to eeprom when HDD is locked. what dose that mean how do I disable that.

thanx for the help!your pushing down to the ASM of your XBox and you just voided the warranty on it.

it means that your mod has screwed up the Xbox down to the electronic lvl...the EEPROM is a memory module on the motherboard of the Xbox for HOLDING data probably for the BIOS of the Xbox and you can't disable this.EPROM's cannot be edited.

What XBOX is this anyways? 360 or first gen?Carbon,

EPROM can be edited, its just very hard to do so: http://computer.howstuffworks.com/rom4.htm

and it was an EEPROM, which doesn't need a UV Eraser, its Electronically Eraseable Program Read Only Memory

but still its basically impossible to do this for a hobbyist and is probably BUILT onto the board.Ooh, missed the second 'e'.i just relished the moment of Leet!

but Carbon, was that sarcastic, if so then sorry if i was correcting you... No lol. I was just saying I accidentally forgot the second 'e'. A likely story...pull out the POLYGRAPH!

but in the end, SMF, your Xbox is screwed...

Solve : laptop internet connection?

Answer»

my laptop will not stay connected through my router, it keeps trying to connect through an unsecure one that is apparently close by. Yes...I basically know nothing...So do you want connected to internet? or do you want keep your laptop from hacker or virus when you connected to internet? Can you specific what is your problem with your laptop? ThanksWill the laptop remain connected via your router for a short time before it loses the connection? Have you been able to see the signal strength when connected via your router? Have you ever enabled settings (WEP or WPA) for wireless security in your router and your laptop? Yes, connected for a short time and I may be fine for a bit and them am "kicked out" and it SAYS that I am connected to the other one, with little to no connectivity and have to wait a while before mine "shows up" in the bubble again saying I am connected to mine. If I try and "repair" I get told there's a cable unplugged -which I have checked. I want to stay connected to mine without being kicked out for whatever reason it is doing it by this other guy whoever it is. If anything (WEP, WPA) has been enabled it would have been by the person that set it up for me and is long gone. And no, I don't really know what that is, sorry. Oh, and how do I check signal strength? Thanks so much for taking the time.Do you see a communication icon in the LOWER RIGHT corner of your screen? It should look like to monitors, one overlapping the other. Hover your mouse over it. A screen tip box should appear showing the signal strength, represented by a tiny 5-bar graph.

What version of Windows are you using?
I have XP. The double monitor icon has a red X on it. When I hover over it there is no bar graph and the tip box says: a network cable is unplugged. Checked them - all OK. When I hover over the single monitor icon, it says: signal strength excellent - status connected. NOTE: last night I downloaded a new McAfee security/virus scan and PERFORMED a scan to find/fix anything. Ever since then my connection problem has not occurred and I have been on line trying to get it to happen and it hasn't. Coincidence? Good Karma? Or is maybe whatever is or was interfering not currently on?

Solve : back me up.?

Answer»

Hi friends, I just bought a seagate 320GB EXTERNAL hardrive. I want to BACKUP my files from my computer onto It. My QUESTION Is how can I do that with out losing the files on my computer permanently.I use Acronis True Image for my BACKUPS...
You should however after creating an image and verifying it as good then burn it to CD's/DVD's...all drives fail...even externals.
I backup every Sunday night.
Then once a Month i burn the latest image to DVD and delete the other 3.
This way worst case scenario i'm 3 weeks away if the entire system GOES down.

The nice thing is completely restoring your HDD takes about 15 minutes as opposed to installing Windows then all your apps ETC...which can take a day or so...Thanks for the reply, I found another way to do It. its as simple as going to my computer... Copy the file or files you want saved from your Internal hardrive than click on the my computer again and find the external hardrive location (in my case drive E) .... and PASTE it. That's all well and good...
However if you ever lose a system drive completely you'll be amazed at all the little things you forgot to back up.ok I see your point, I will try Acronis true image. Thanks.

Solve : how to make changes to boot up with multiple OS?

Answer»

I have both XP pro and Vista Home Premium on my tower. The hard drive with Vista was not working properly and I found some bad SECTORS. I replaced the hard drive with a new one. I did a CLEAN install with Vista Home Premium. Now when booting up I am seeing the following choices: earlier version of windows, Vista listed twice. How do I remove one of the Vista listings?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
FredH
Vista doesn't use boot.ini file anymore to MANAGE boot options. It uses Boot Configuration Data (BCD).
You can EDIT boot options, using bcedit command: http://www.pronetworks.org/forums/how-to-edit-the-windows-vista-boot-menu-options-t79102.html
But the easier option is to use free EasyBCD program: http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1
At the above page, you can click on screenshots LINK, and see how that tool is easy to use.

Solve : Trying to Find Info on Pascal Language.?

Answer»

I've been trying to FIND out when the Pascal Language was first used on a computer and unsuccessfully found out anything. Would anyone know
1) When it was first used on a computer
2)What Company/Computer it was

Thanks for your helpClick Here...Say... this sounds like Homework...

This somehow reminds me of some goof that was trying to say Visual Basic was just a cheap copy of Delphi, without realizing that the first implementation of a language literally called "Delphi" (not counting Object pascal) was in 1994- and Visual Basic 1.0 was released in 1991, a full three years after before Delphi- which begs the question as to how it is a "cheap copy" of something that didn't exist yet! They, uh, went forward in, uh, time! Yeah! They copied it, and brought it back!
Microsoft steals everything! Also check out this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niklaus_Wirth
This will help you have a broader understanding of the subject. In doing your research, it is not just about getting answers to specific questions, but about getting a view of the landscape. When you understand who this man was, you will understand more about the programming language that he named not after himself, but someone before him.
The language was meant to be an ideal teaching tool, not a production tool.

Solve : Why all that excitement about Windows 7??

Answer»

Maybe someone will explain it to me, because no matter what I try, I'm not getting it.

I've been testing 7 for over 2 months, and I really don't see much difference from Vista.
What is so much better?
On a top of it, I can see, the most excited people, are often those, who never used Vista, used it for couple of days, and already hated it. Now, they're falling in love with Windows 7.
I've been using Vista for 1 1/2 years, and I simply like it a lot.
It's as stable as XP, and as for the GUI, frankly speaking, I prefer Vista.

So, now, let me know.Maybe Windows 7 will be a free update if
you paid retail for Vista

Would that excite you? That's not my question.Quote

Maybe Windows 7 will be a free update if

I highly doubt there will be free upgrades.

What also gets me is they are treating the (mostly cracked) beta's like they are the full version. Why won't this and that work... Because it's BETA and you are supposed to give FEEDBACK to MS on what doesn't work! HellOOOOOO

I agree with Broni *shocking I know You need to get a grip here people. Also, most of those installations are pristine.
Just OS. No extra programs, no extra startups, no extra services, and those excited are: WOW! Man, it's fast!Quote
That's not my question.

Well, if Vista is stable, and if Windows 7 is like it, maybe if I ever shell out again for a MS OS I will go for the Windows 7 and be at least up where others are. I have a long history.. ah I already told you that. You know. NT, then 2000, then XP. I just could not read the books fast enough. And tjey were expensive.

So now here I am on XP because this last box I bought has a legal load of XP on it. Lat Time I bought a real factory PC it came with Windows ME!

So, yeah, I am own of those poor soul that can not afford Vista and I just now got a decent box with XP. So, if Windows 7 is for real, and it works, and if it will be around for awhile, just maybe I just might fork up the money and my family will eat rice and beans for two months.
I'll be sticking to XP probably until support for it ends. I won't pirate an OS and can't justify $250 for bells and whistles when XP does everything I need it to. By then 7 should be down to a reasonable price.Win2k, in my opinion, is the most stable and reliable operating system, that Microsoft has ever released.

I could care less about 7.BINGO !

Quote

You inadvertantly answered your own question....

However
here is a list of the new and updated features...some of which may or may not exist in the BETA release...

To be honest about it pre-releasing the BETA was ONE of the best marketing schemes this decade as individuals are doing all their advertising for them while the release is still 10 months away....priceless.This is a nice list, however most of those items are like.....WOW! Unbelievable! Just for this one feature, Win 7 is definitely the best OS ever!
For instance:
Quote
Calculator. The Windows Calculator utility inexplicably receives a major upgrade in Windows 7 with calculation history, unit conversion, calculation templates, data calculations, and other new features.
WOW!Quote from: Broni on February 07, 2009, 09:50:49 AM

WOW!

The funny part is it comes from people who never even used the calculator from previous versions- and won't be using this version either. Besides- if they really need something like that in a previous version- there IS this thing called freeware. I'm sure the old graphing program I wrote using VB2 is still floating around there somewhere...

Why not longer! That's what I'm doing with Visual Studio 6! support officially ended september last year.

Does anybody know if MSVBVM60.dll is included with Windows 7? MS promised it would be in Vista... but of course no such promise was made for 7.

As far as people who say vista is slow are concerned- I had the same initial view when I first booted up my laptop with home premium. I knew after the 20 minutes it took to start and boot to the desktop that I would need to clean format...

I was presented with a Norton 360 dialog...

I blame the manufacturers for bastardizing clean installs with anything more then drivers and REAL software applications. None of this, "face recognition" program BS. USEFUL programs. If I wanted "face recognition" to log on, I would freakin' download the program myself. I guarantee that although sales for Windows 7 will be much higher then Vista- the Vista-haters will be just as disappointed.

As patio said- it's really more a clever marketing scheme to allow free download of the beta- and, given that Vista has garnered more negative publicity about "issues" (which existed any more then in previous OS releases) that they release this public beta. It's important to note that Microsoft, IIRC, has NEVER released an OS completely free of charge to the public (usually just MSDN subscribers). The final slap in the face would be Microsoft spokespeople saying that it is likely what will be released as the final version- IE: only showstopping bugs. Oddly- this matching up more for a Release candidate then a Beta.

Not entirely true. You can use the calculator as a web browser to bypass a schools web filters. The calculator is a huge hit.Exactly! It's so sad- one of my co-workers is so acedemically challenged...

something costs 1.68 over 60% of the people who come in buy it. And yet everytime they give her a toonie, (2 dollars for the uninformed on canadian currency), she has to ring it into the till to find out... OMG! the difference is STILL 32 CENTS!...

Some of the customers like to screw with her head... give her a toonie, wait until she does that, and THEN say, "oh, I have 68 cents here...".

I mean... it's simple subtraction for god's sake...

And I don't think she's the only one... sometimes when the tills aren't working proper or something, I'll find LITTLE scraps of paper with text like this:

Code: [Select] 2.00
- 1.68

Even worse they will have the actual "borrowing" marks (cross out 2, give the tens spot ten, etc...)... it's so sad it makes me weep a little without shedding actual tears.

Which is why I screw with their head. Some of them think they are "really good" at math, so I'll ask them, "alright smarty, what's 2 to the power of 31" and they'll say, I dunno, bet you can't fig..."

"16,777,216"

LOL. so much fun to memorize powers of 2...

Solve : Am I Insane??

Answer»

I have an Emachines. I want to get new (Intel) drivers, but emachines won't let me.

I bought it used, so the warranty is invalid and they won't give me support. I have new drivers, but this pc simply will not let me install them.

I don't get it. It's like if you buy a Ford that has a few Toyota parts, but neither will let you replace those parts.

What is going on? How does the industry get away with this?

Or am I just missing something?

?

What driver are you trying to install? Chipset?
Driver download link, please.
eMachine model, please.Hello Broni.

82945G chipset. Model t3604. I believe the driver is for the GMA 950. 1583 it says on the file, version 2.11.15.0

I can't remember where I d/l it from. Gateway's site this time I think. I am not sure but I think I read this driver was to support Transform and Lighting in some capacity. What XP version? If it's an eMachine and the driver is from Gateway no wonder it won't let you install it...Quote from: patio on February 09, 2009, 08:25:03 AM

If it's an eMachine and the driver is from Gateway no wonder it won't let you install it...

Yes, I believe it's a Gateway driver NOW.

It was ORIGINALLY on either Intel's or Emachines site, probably both, but they have long since taken it down, since before I had this machine.

The link to the Gateway driver was given to me BY Emachines Support.

So far as I can tell, if I had any other box than Emachines, I could update the hardware inside it.

Did Gateway buy them or something?

Is it a fact that used-bought pc's can't update their drivers???

OH and it says XP on my profile but I'm on Vista Home Basic. I must have made a mistake.

Quote
Is it a fact that used-bought pc's can't update their drivers???

No, but you need to be cafe full about what you buy and who from.
Microsoft has a program called MAR. Now I am not MS booster, but the MAR program puts some order into the used PC market.

See here:
http://oem.microsoft.com/public/seo/mar.htm

On eBay there are refurbished PCs with COA WINDOWS XP.
Most listings are for Dell, followed by HP and Gateway. A few IBM. Not many e-Machines.
If you buy a PC w/o a OS, How will you know the things REALLY works?
And If the PC does not have the drivers with it likewise you don't know if the chip set is good.
It is real nice if a used PC starts up right out of the box with no hassle.Geek-9pm: Thanks for the info.

This driver, I mouseover and it says it's Intel. Everything about it says Intel. It's for the chipset I have. When I install, a window informs my that eMachines won't allow it. That's when I reach for my revolver, as the fella said.

Drivers are here

Found 'em on the eMachines site in no time at all. Hope this works out for you, it doesn't seem like that bad of a box, THOUGH, be fearful of the POWER supply. eMachines, HP, and several other companies like them use cheap power supplies that can't take any strain at all without popping a cap.Yo Dead Reckon. Yeah I've read about the psu. Yeah this model isn't all that bad, and it was an emergency purchase at the right price. At first I thought whoah, what a powerful model! And then I actually started reading about the industry. Consequently, I've become more shrewd about computers in general, barring confusing premises such as this.

And yes, lol, I've been to that link many times. The drivers there are the originals. I'm confused about the one I have and want to install, which were specified for my chipset and GMA and released a year after the ones in the link.

Do you need to be on warranty to get new drivers???

I'm throwing my hands up in the air now. There they go--no WORRIES!

Solve : Saving .srt and .avi files onto a DVD and compressing video file?

Answer»

Hey
I wasn't sure where to post this so I just chose 'OTHER'.
Anyways, I was wanting to save my .srt and .avi files onto a DVD so I can play them on my DVD player.
I ALSO wanted to fit more than one video FILE onto the DVD (and hopefully not lose too much of the video QUALITY). I know that would mean I have to compress the files but I wasn't too sure how considering .srt files are involved. Do I compress the video files first or do the other first? I also know that I will NEED some kind of software to do all this. Is there a good software someone could recommend? Is there one that I could just download for free? I hope it's not too much to ask for but simple easy to understand INSTRUCTIONS would be great
Thanks in advance

Solve : transfer data from old LT to new??

Answer»

what is the easiest most cost effective way to transfer my pertinent data from my old pc laptop to new pc laptop.Burn the data in the old laptop to CD/DVD.

Remove the old laptop HDD and get an external USB enclosure for it and hook it up to the new one.

Upload the data you need to a file storage site and then DLoad it to the new laptop.

Setup a Home Network that includes both machines and transfer the data you need.

Get a laptop to IDE converter and hook up the old drive and burn to CD/DVD and then transfer the files to the new machine.

As you can see there are a few options here...more inf on what data it is you need will help narrow things down a bit...music library WMP & I tunes, pictures, favorites, e-mail contacts, maybe a word perfect programA program cannot be copied and expected to run...
That being said i'd say options #1 and #3 are your easiest...Can anyone describe their first-hand experience with using Windows Easy Transfer program to set up a new computer? I have looked through the instruction once, but never needed to actually try it.

Microsoft has a couple of Help and Support articles about it. For XP there is Article ID: 293118
“How to use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" in Windows XP” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293118

Here is a quote from the article:
You can use the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard" in Windows XP to transfer settings for Microsoft Internet Explorer and for Microsoft Outlook Express. You can also use this wizard to transfer desktop settings, display settings, dial-up connections, and other types of settings.

For Vista there is Article ID: 928634: “How to use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate files and settings from one Windows-based computer to another Windows Vista-based computer” http://support.microsoft.com/kb/928634
There may be other articles.

It sounds like it WOULD help transferring some of the tricky HIDDEN settings you don’t want to have to RECREATE by hand.
cannot be of any help but I am curious if this program came with your PC or was it a separate purchase?Quote from: PATIO on February 10, 2009, 06:23:25 PM

Solve : Computer won't recognize CD ROM drives?

Answer»

Ok Here's the deal. I have an ancient computer running Win 98 with an Intel motherboard and a Pentium ll processer. When booted it doesnt recognize either of the 2 CD drives installed on it anymore. It does recognize the card reader on the Lexmark printer. I don't know when exactly this came about but I know that at one time it did list all of the installed drives A THRU G. I just got a new computer and would like to INSTALL an external hard drive to transfer files from the OLD 'puter but can't install the driver for it without using the CD drive. Downloading from the internet is difficult because I am limited by a dial up connection. Any help appreciated. Those CD drives will need drivers to run properly...Win98 is the last version this was neccessary.

If the manuf. does not have them do a search for Oak Rom drivers...they're Universal.

Solve : Yahoo not loading?

Answer»

???IE is not loading yahoo. When I disconnect the power to the modem and then reconnect the modem, yahoo will load. Do you think it's the modem? Now that you've rebooted, let us know how long you go before you can't reach yahoo.
Are you using a router, or just the modem? After disconnect and then reconnect the modem, yahoo loads great. But still sometimes while switching screens, it slows down to a crawl. I did have a router connected, but when the trouble started I disconnected it.OK -- that's good troubleshooting.
So, right now, you're going right from the computer to the modem.

Cable, DSL, dialup?
DSL from AT&T. I even had them to come out and take a look at my lines. they tested the lines, and said that there was a problem in the line, but it's fixed....no it's not!! I think that they were just trying to appease me. The problem is not fixed. What about other websites? Is the problem only with Yahoo?Do you have DSL filters on ALL phone lines in the house ? ?
Even lines not in use should have one...I have two phone lines at my house. I only have filters that connect to the phone in that room. I was told by AT&T that I did not need filters on the other lines because they were different phone numbers. If it's a different line they may be correct unless it is a line-sharing setup which they OFFER...
You have nothing to LOSE by throwing a filter on it.
Is this a SpeedStream modem ? ?
If so demand a new one if it continues like this...Patio is, as usual, correct.
IF they are physically separate phone lines, you shouldn't need filters; however, SINCE the phone lines are in close proximity once they enter your Network Interface BOX, it wouldn't hurt to filter every phone jack in the house. How is the voice quality on the phone line where the DSL is installed?SORRY, I do not know what type of filter it is. I am less than a novice when it comes to computers or anything else techical. But I will put a filter on all the other phones. The phone quality is very good on all of the phones.

And for those that currently use the Webmail extensions with Thunderbird to
access their Hotmail accounts, this is a good place to read along:
http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/browse_thread/thread/e7d8b78499fc9025

Cool!

Now, heres a question:
Where are they getting their advert money from?
And when will they support IMAP...Update:

Yesterday, Hotmail access with Thunderbird, using the Webmail extenstions ceased to function. I'm in the U.S.

You can read some others comments about it here:
http://groups.google.com/group/thunderbird-webmail-extension/topics

and here:

Found details on how to change settings here:
http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=39&t=1086595
and tried them.

Seems to work fine now!
Tried SENDING and recieving a couple emails. Both worked.

Summary: It appears the Microsoft has now allowed free pop and smtp access to Hotmail, but has not advertised it.
Webmail extensions and add ons for Thunderbird are no longer necessary to be able to use TBird with your Hotmail accounts! Set up TBird, and it works.

Solve : Does DMA affect video quality??

Answer»

Hey
Today I was burning a video file onto a DVD.
I have Sonic (dvd burning software) on my computer and in the past its worked really great but today was a bit different.
When I went to open it a message popped up saying 'MyDVD has DETECTED that DMA is turned off for one or more of the recording DEVICES attched to the system. In order to successfully write to the device, DMA should be turned on...'
This has never popped up before till today and I've already tried changing the settings by GOING onto system properties in my computer and changing it to 'DMA if available'.
I don't think much can be done to fix it but if anyone has another WAY to enable DMA I'm willing to give it a go.
My main question however is how would not turning DMA on affect the whole burning process and more important how would it affect my video file that I'm saving? I'm pretty sure it took longer to burn (well, longer than usual). Is that one of the effects of not enabling DMA.
I've tried searching on the net but I not really good with all the 'techno-vocab' so from what I've read by enabling DMA, 'the CPU works less harder' (in simple terms). the same thing happened to me and i just went ahead and burnt a DVD ANYWAY it still works fine, try it

I want to download IE6 so that I can make sure that my designs are COMPATIBLE. I already have IE7, and I need a way so that I can use both.

Thanks. To save you DOWNLOADING, visit http://www.browsershots.org/. I strongly don't recommend doing this.

If it works in IE7, it almost certainly works in IE6.

Can you not use another MACHINE to test it?

If you really must have both versions, look here:

Solve : ummmm...?

Answer»

ok so a friend of mine received something in the mail yesterday and we think it's something her ex hubby had ordered before he moved out and we have no idea what to do with this stuff since we can't GET a hold of him so we might as well make some use out of it...the question is though....
what are we supposed to do with an external storage device, a 160 gig hard drive and 2 fans?!?!Sell em or use em.well that's just it. if we were to use them, what can we do with them? doesn't look like we can actually make any use of the items. sorry we're just 2 women who pretty much only know how to turn on a computer and not much else Well then sell them.An external hard drive is a device for storage of files.

Its like the hard drive inside of your computer.

You need to put the 160GB hard drive into the external hard drive enclosure.
Directions should be included.

These are great for backing up data, such as music or photos, in case your computer crashes or you need to reformat.

As for the fans:
Not really a whole lot you can do unless you have a computer that NEEDS new fans, or more fans.

Personally, I would keep all of it, in case I needed a new FAN, and so I could back up and store my files on the external hard drive...

Still, either can be sold on a site such as:
www.Craigslist.com

If you have a neighbor THATS better with computers, you could always give it away as well.

But, once again, its an important thing to back up your data, it might be worth keeping the external drive. How much do you want for them ? ?WHATEVER patio offers I'll match, and I'll also give you this piece string I just found. An irresistable deal!

(wait, there's more, go through now and you also recieve this old dried up leaf, absolutely free!

Solve : Get read CD drive?

My CD/DVD drive has stopped working. Any application requiring a CD/DVD drive does not WORK. Some applications say that there is no CD in the drive when there is. In windows explorer, my E drive is not even listed. I use the drive a lot so I replaced the drive with a NEW ONE, but the problem remains so I do not think it is the hardware. What can I do? Find it in Device Manager...right click it and SELECT uninstall.
It will be re-installed on the next re-boot.

If it STILL does not work you can swap it into another machine to determine if the drive has failed or not...

Solve : Strange problem?

Answer»

Last night I got some updates for my Ubuntu computer.

After the updates, I open up Firefox. The home page is google.com. But when it opened up it went to http://www.google.es/ the spanish google.
I thouhgt it was strange, but this old LINUX box is a bit buggy.

I checked to make sure that my homepage was still set to google.com
It was!

I didn't think much of it.

Today I hooked up another computer I have, with XP Pro and opened Internet Explorer. The home page on this completely different computer is also google.

I was surprised when http://www.google.es/
opened up again on this computer.

I then tried to get to google on Opera and the same thing happened. I thought it was very strange so I decided to check out google on another computer I have in a different room (on the same network).

That computer did the same thing with four different browsers.

So I'm thinking this might be problem on google's end.

Do any of you have this same problem?

Mr. Google, whats you take on this?google's going to google.ca for me, just as it should.

.COM is really a REDIRECTOR to the proper national VERSION- you could try to force it to google.us, or even try google.ca, see if one of those works.

Why it's REDIRECTING I haven't a clue- if it was one computer, I'd suspect browser/region settings, but with multiple it gets more confusing. They are on the same network though, so chances are the router might be doing it for some reason...

Okay, I just powered off all of the computers and unplugged the router.

After about five minutes, I plugged the router BACK in and started a couple of the computers back up; one computer with Xp and the other with 98se.

I then tried to go to google.com on both of the computers.
I still get redirected to http://www.google.es/

Any other search engine I go to, is fine (in English).

The common denominators with all of these computers are the router and modem.

It really isn't that big of a deal.
It just annoys me.

Could it be my ISP?
It's - http://www.suddenlink.com/

I like the title....
Basic C64 issue....I think he means because it's the c64 BASIC... but he got them backwards... it should say "C64 BASIC issue".Quote from: squall_01 on February 08, 2009, 03:41:43 PM

seeing the board traces were the data gores an such.

So that's where it goes. I always wondered about that.no no, it gores there, so it explodes into a little pile of electronic giblets. I've always wanted to see data gore itself.Quote from: BC_Programmer on February 09, 2009, 09:52:00 AM
I've always wanted to see data gore itself.
Gore, or Core? They're two different things. One of them I don't particularly recommend you watching....Well, I'll have to get a C64 I guess, since as Squall says that's where the data gores...no i ment what I posted this was probably a problem that they all had at one point or another. The thing is that it saved the data I issued it to do that command an seen it happen.still strange i formatted the disk and even saved a small part of code that I had done. I just told it to print"" an save what it spat out an everything but it wouldnt load or anything.and where are you saving this to? are you sure the disk drive/ cassette works properly? They were famous for being unreliable in the 1980s, so God knows what one would be like now, especially if has not moved in years.
might explain the "goring"... ah I see, i'm attempting to save it to a disk. wish I had the tape drive mite work better??Quote from: Dead Reckon on February 08, 2009, 05:09:45 PM
Oh, and there's a stereo that was bought in 1969 downstairs in the dining room. Old Delmonico stereo, grandma bought it new in '69 before moving to Florida, she gave it to her mother before moving, then got it back after her trip to ALASKA shortly after they moved back here to Virginia. Anyway, the stereo is mint, turntable don't work, but the AM/FM tuner works, sounds pretty good. Its uh, 60W I think, don't think its ever been serviced.

I use a Sansui AU-505 amplifier from 1973 every day. I bought it in 1990 for 15 UK POUNDS from a guy who had bid for it at an auction as part of a mixed lot. He didn't know what it was, thought it was junk. I use it with a modern CD player and Eltax floor standing speakers and it sounds great.
The Commodore 64 disk drive was the target of an early virus, one of the few that could actually cause hardware damage. The virus worked by repeatedly causing a disk SEEK beyond the last TRACK, banging the head arm against its stop over and over again, eventually bending it microscopically but enough to put it out of alignment so the drive became useless.

so you think i should try another drive? i have like five or so.

Solve : Used Dell computer will not Start?

Answer»

Hello I am pretty new at computers,I just purchased a used dell computer, with 2.2 gig CPU ,512 ram,40gig hard drive, winxp home, When I went to see the computer the man had it hooked to a flat screen LCD,and it worked good, when I got home with it ,it would not start,I am using the older type monitor. The machine trys to start and then goes blank with a CLICKING noise coming from the tower. Does anyone have a idea what is wrong? And I forgot to MENTION the man was moving out of state. Thanks kenNice sell...unfortunately.
If clicking sound comes from the HD, then you're gonna need a new one. Fortunately, they're cheap.I had a similar problem: This desktop had a NEW Motherboard put in it as the old one was "fried". Bought it as 'non-working' for cheap. I OPENED it up, and took out the memory sticks and video card to re-install them after cleaning. (Dust can REALLY wreak havoc) Upon re-connection, I noted that it made more sense to plug the monitor into the video card than the other place that it was hooked it when I got it. I think that may be for an external monitor - the PIC is there ... Anyhow, it all worked!!! I was ecstatic!!! (The previous owner wasn't too happy, though!!! )

My symptoms: Tower powered up and worked through the initial phase (red light to NO red light). Meanwhile, the monitor STARTED with the familiar green light and them it seemed to go to sleep ... the light turned to ORANGE as the tower made a CLICK

Maybe that's the same thing ... maybe not ... Hope it helps, though
