Solve : laptop internet connection?

Answer»

my laptop will not stay connected through my router, it keeps trying to connect through an unsecure one that is apparently close by. Yes...I basically know nothing...So do you want connected to internet? or do you want keep your laptop from hacker or virus when you connected to internet? Can you specific what is your problem with your laptop? ThanksWill the laptop remain connected via your router for a short time before it loses the connection? Have you been able to see the signal strength when connected via your router? Have you ever enabled settings (WEP or WPA) for wireless security in your router and your laptop? Yes, connected for a short time and I may be fine for a bit and them am "kicked out" and it SAYS that I am connected to the other one, with little to no connectivity and have to wait a while before mine "shows up" in the bubble again saying I am connected to mine. If I try and "repair" I get told there's a cable unplugged -which I have checked. I want to stay connected to mine without being kicked out for whatever reason it is doing it by this other guy whoever it is. If anything (WEP, WPA) has been enabled it would have been by the person that set it up for me and is long gone. And no, I don't really know what that is, sorry. Oh, and how do I check signal strength? Thanks so much for taking the time.Do you see a communication icon in the LOWER RIGHT corner of your screen? It should look like to monitors, one overlapping the other. Hover your mouse over it. A screen tip box should appear showing the signal strength, represented by a tiny 5-bar graph.

What version of Windows are you using?
I have XP. The double monitor icon has a red X on it. When I hover over it there is no bar graph and the tip box says: a network cable is unplugged. Checked them - all OK. When I hover over the single monitor icon, it says: signal strength excellent - status connected. NOTE: last night I downloaded a new McAfee security/virus scan and PERFORMED a scan to find/fix anything. Ever since then my connection problem has not occurred and I have been on line trying to get it to happen and it hasn't. Coincidence? Good Karma? Or is maybe whatever is or was interfering not currently on?
