Can anyone tell me if and how I can recover an .xls file that I accidentally over wrote. Its not the end of the free world but it sure would make my life a whole lot easier.

May be of some help. Free to try.If you want to know, in layman's terms, there are 3 types of space on a hard drive (HDD).

Free Space 1 (these are just names to represent it)
Free Space 2
Used Space

Free space 1 is space on your hard drive that has NEVER been used. It contains no data whatsoever.
Free space 2 is space on your hard drive that has been used, but has then become usable. It contains data but the data can be overwritten. Your computer uses the oldest free space 2 as possible, if it must. The data can be recovered, unless you use a super magnet...

Hi there.  I think this is a monitor problem vs. computer problem, but I COULD be wrong.  I have a Mac computer and use a Samsung  SyncMaster 570V LCD monitor.  The monitor is pretty old (8 years or so).  Just recently the screen CHANGED so for example, when on a website, the normal white background is black, and normally the print that was black, is white.  It is almost "reversed" in color.  So photos are impossible to recognize, because peoples' faces are "white out".  Hopefully this makes SENSE.  I can't figure it out by PLAYING around on the computer because I am not good with computers    Any help would be greatly appreciated.  THANKS in advance!!

In computer FORUMS in general, or these forums for instance, how do you QUOTE single lines of text or sentences, if you are quoting someone?  Anytime I highlight something and click "quote" it quotes the whole post instead of only what I highlighted...

I know there is probably SOMEWHERE AROUND here that explains it , but I was just wondering if someone could just throw out a few hints.delete the parts of the quote you don't want.

So my cousin gave me his old laptop because it BROKE and he bought a much better one.

he told me that a month or TWO before it fully "broke", it wouldn't turn on without the charger.

im 60% its the battery problem
30% its a motherboard problem
10% the charger broke and the battery is dead.

but im open for all HELP and ideas

They may be already as RAW indicates the card was unplugged prematurely while it was reading/writing data to itself...or without using "Safely Remove Hardware" in Windows...
RAW is always a bad sign.
There is one flash recovery app i've had some success with called RECUVA...
DLoad and install it and give it a try.plz say me how to format its?

I wanted to point out, formatting the drive may not work if the partition isnt CREATED.. it sounds like the partition was erased if you cant format it, I deleted the partition on my creative zen mp3 player, since i used NT fdisk.exe wasnt available and the other freeware i tryed didnt work either, but you might try partition magic anyways i FOUND success by keeping the device turned on and plugged into a usb port during bootup, i loaded the windows installation from the cd again, during installation the zen player showed up in the partition screen, so i created the partition on the mp3 player.. MAKING SURE TO LEAVE THE WINDOWS PARTITION ALONE AND INTACT, then RESTARTED to windows and then tryed formatting it to FAT, and it worked.. so you could try that.

How do I copy files without changing the metadata?  For instance, if I have a hard drive that I want to copy the files from... and copy them to my desktop without changing any of the Date Created/ Date Modified/ Author, etc info - how can I do this?Try making a simple test.
Do a backup of a small group of files.
Restore the backup to a new location,
a new folder on the TARGET hard drive.
See if the meta data is as it was.
I believe only the archive bit is changed.
Not sure of that. Just trying to be helpful.

In Vista there is a better way to do this.

I teach- and my computer has the check NAMES FEATURE turned on. I've got students e-mails showing up from 2 years ago ( the students are long GONE).

When I go to the global address list, I can't FIND the contact,

I have a Gateway FX6800-01e

To start, I turned off the comp before I went to bed. Everything was working just fine not one issue at all. The next day when I went to turn it on it stops at the gateway promp screen for a few, then goes to a black screen and says,

CD-ROM Boot Priority ..No Medium
Reboot and Select PROPER Boot device
or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device and press a key_

I went into bios to see if there was anything wrong and I can not find my hard drive in any of the ports. All it finds is my cd/dvd driver and usb when I look at all the ports.
I checked to see if the hd is RUNNING and it is. I also took the cable from the hb and put the cable in another comp and the cable is working just fine.

I APPRECIATE any help and thank you very much as well.

Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.Is there a CD in the drive?Ok I DL the information you gave and i thank you for it Broni. I did the scan and it found no hard drives or anything. I tried it 4 times checking cables and what not with no luck. I DL the seatools for dos v2.13b which I hope was the correct one. The hd is running and there is power to it. Also for JJ 3000 there is or was no cds in the computer.Ok I found out from my g/f the night I turned it off and went to bed, she told me when she logged off her comp that it updated windows. Now if mine did I do not know I just turn off windows and went to bed before it finished turning off. So it could of updated windows I dont know I was late and had to get up early the next day so I didnt stay with my comp till it was compleaty off.  I dont know if this helps at all but no matter what I have tired it just keeps saying theres no HD. Had a buddy install WINDOWS xp media center EDITION 2005 for me and i did all the updates. After the updates i installed all my old FILES back on the comp and using wmp 9 and now it wont play my wma files, it takes me to a webpage to download media rights but it wont let me b/c file has been downloaded 10 times and now i'm wondering if it was the updates that did this? is there anyway around this? i downloaded the drmwizard and still no luck. My installation of windows xp media center 2005 is validated.

The computer I have, the BATTERY died plus the one fan but the battery is glued on to the motherboard for some reason, and these things that poke out POPPED out or something and don't work I forget what they are called. Pretty much my computer doesn't work anymore. So for $300-$500 dollars would it be cheaper to build or buy a computer? All I want a computer for is to be able to go on the internet, listen to music and play the SIMS 2. so My problem is:
I have a HP550 labtop....with windows vista..and it was all working just fine untill one day when I was working all good and it turned off suddenly....I opened it again and it didn't work then...I removed the battery and turned it on only by the charger direclty...it worked okaaay untill last night when I was working all good then it turned off suddenly as well I tried to open it again but here is what happenes:
I press the turn on boutton I hear a loud strange sound for the fan comparing for the sound I used to hear for the fans..and only lasts for two seconds I guess then it turnes off again before even anything appears on the screen........I tried to open it by battery only,I changed the charger and nothing new same problem repeats....
I've been told that may be the problem is from virus or something even that I don't agree...I feel it is power problem issue,,,,
I can't contact the center u buy product from because I got this labtop as a gift from Italy so I really need your help..............I will appreciate any help..........

I have a Dell laptop E1505 and was using this Logitech mouse which quit WORKING.  Purchased a NEW one.  Get error message  that there was a fatal error during installation.  Went into their help site and performed all with no success.  Called their Tech Service,  SAID it was not the mouse but the COMPUTER problem.  Computer is out of warranty so this is not a option...Can you help?  bgdon

All you can try is pressing CTRL + F5 to force the browser to FORGET the cache when loading the page. Other than that, just clear your cache completely and try again.
If it doesn't work, it's the Website's problem.

I think I need a CD burner if I want to place my photos on a CD..Why not simply get a Desktop PC? They're MUCH cheaper. I strongly suggest it seeing as you're not going to be doing much with it.

I used to regularly listen to radio through my PC but for some reason I'm not able to do so now.  I've UNBLOCKED pop-ups and disabled firewalls just in case, but with no luck.

I seldom leave a screensaver active either because it interferes with games, moves, etc, and most of the time I just hibernate my laptop.

I do not build PCs for people EITHER, I just recommend Dell. Can't be bothered with the risk attached to building your own system for someone else.OK I am sorry

thank you !UNLESS you can get the parts at a very low price, I wouldn't bother. If just one part breaks or is DOA and the company you ordered it from refuses DMA, then you've lost any profit you would have gained from selling it.

And you can't EASILY INCREASE the price of your machine without going above those of Dell.

hey everyone i had the same  problem but i found the solution!!! i backed up my computer i delete aim and any software that i dont use..then i took my external hard drive or even a cd to save some pictures or music that u want to keep...then u create a new account ( by the way im using vista) then you go to your new account...then delete the one u first had.. reset computer download aim and thats it...ur computer is fresh again any qustions feel free to ask!

I'd like to know how anonymous forumers are on internet forums and/or how EASILY (by a few mouse clics? or only by legal action?) their identity can be traced by the admin via ip-number or online provider...

I'm a regular on a german forum on foreign language learning and some time ago I opened a 2nd account on that forum, simply because SOMEONE, another regular, was sort of rude and i wanted to call him over it...and it was fun arguing with this guy as a newby, without risking my "reputation". It was still civil though - after all I'm no forum hooligan  .

I've been wondering if the admin of that forum can trace the identity of my 2nd account that, of course, i'd opened using another email of mine.

Is there an easy answer to this question or are forums much too different from each other by way of technical structure and admin capacities?

I only know that my ip changes everytime I access the internet, but I've heard that there are other ips such as network ips.

The admin of almost any forum (and in some cases, Moderators) can see the IP that any post was made from, as well as what IP you registered from. If the admin was suspicious of your "newbie" persona they could easily search through their database for other users posting from that IP and would have come up with your ORIGINAL account. Quote

CHECK to make sure EVERYTHING is plugged in properly at the back of your case - keyboard, monitor, etc. Check your videocard and memory inside the case, and any other cards you may have, and ensure everything is properly seated.

Failing that, click here for a LIST of the different beep codes and what they mean (hopefully you know your BIOS manufacturer) and then get back to us.It would also be very helpful to include some more info on your machine. This usually speeds up results in the fine ART of troubleshooting...

so I'm GOING to start a new job next MONDAY (and I'm happy to - unemployment in GER is huge, the official figure of 4 mio is a joke) and this will include doing phone support for people who work with industiral calculators in chemical laboratories .

Of course i will get training, yet i think it can't do much harm if I preinformed myself.

Has one of you gained first HAND experience with these calculators? They're from Hewlett Packard.

I'd have thought that calculators were a thing of the past but apparently this is not entirely the case.

Not familiar with that calculator but often many of the HP calculators will have EMULATIONS that can be RUN on the computer that will allow you to learn more about the calculator without actually having one.

I was told that my computer had a virus so I put my recovery disk in and now it seems to be just fine but I can't get the sound to work now.  this is the most common source of the sound not working, ESPECIALLY after a reinstallation of recovery of windows... not having the drivers for sound card installed.

If that doesn't work, RIGHT click on any open area of your desktop. At the bottom of the menu that POPS up, click on Properties. Click on the Settings tab, and see if there's SOMETHING you can adjust there to make everything happy again.

My parent’s computer, which had a fully installed, and working properly windows xp STARTED giving random blue screen errors.  I figured they did something to the computer so I began to reload Windows XP.  Now I am getting the same blue screen errors or STOP messages while installing Windows XP.  I now think I have a hardware problem but I don't have a clue what the symptoms are telling me.  Can anyone HELP me?Questions:

1. Have you formatted the Hard Disk Drive before reinstalling Windows XP?

I was having the same problems, a lot of FREEZES and system crashes. I had recently installed a additional drive in my notebook SATA, and I thought that was the conflict so I removed it. I had also bought OEM software and thought that may be the problem so I got a Full Retail OS and still the same thing. I kept getting messages to check newly installed hardware etc., IRQL Not Equal and to run Scandisk..... I tried everything to no avail, and then it hit me.....BAM!
 I upgraded my machine from 1024 memory to 2048
memory, but the upgrade was with -----> GENERIC MEMORY", so i removed it and replaced it with the original memory and VOILA! no more Blue Screen Errors', it is that simple. So those of you who are experiencing Blue Screen Errors I am hoping you kept the original memory sticks from the manufacturer. If i do a future upgrade of memory it must and will be with a purchase from the company that manufactures
the memory that came with my machine. My machine rebooted with no errors and works flawlessly even with the OEM version software, and I had to find out the solution when i spent 100.00 more on full retail.
Get that Generic Memory the *censored* out of there. Not all Generic Memory causes this problem, but if you have Bluescreen errors, you have purchased the kind that does. Hi, today i lost the password for my xp admin account, and i have tried heaps of those GAY programs that claim to GET it for you. I am now trying to RUN safe mode so i can EITHER do a system restore or get the SAM file. Otherwise, if someone knows a program that actually does work.

on the back of the palm pilot. Sort of like a tiny electronic MOTORCYCLE would sound?... ever since I dropped it. Everything still works, but when the sound happens, it drains the battery fast. I was planning to buy a new battery, so I will need to open it up anyway.. I was just wondering if maybe it is a short circuit or something. If this thing's going to croak, I don't want to buy a new battery for it.

I hope not.I can't imaging anything clicking unless it is the sound of something shorting out, which could explain the battery drain. How expensive are batteries for those? Would you be able to look inside (like with a battery cover off) to see if anything looks unusual, or to identify where it is coming from?

Very interesting read, still baffles me that this would only WORK with other devices plugged in. Although you appear to have it resolved I'd maybe also consider trying a different USB hub, even THOUGH I couldn't imagine why a powered USB hub would have this issue.I say this with no authority, but it's something wacky with the USB 1.0.  (Yeah, I really "went out on a limb" on that ONE. 

If the original poster is comfortable, and there are open expansion SLOTS inside the computer, she, or a friend, or a shop professional can install a USB 2.0 CONTROLLER card for about $20 - $30 US (parts) which should do the trick.

I have comcast broaband cable internet, and I have 3 computers hooked up to a router.  I recently began experiencing very brief disconnects from the internet on my personal computer.  I'm talking like just an instant, no longer.  My AOL Instant messanger will disconnect and then be able to reconnect right away.  This happens about once every hour or so.  It is also only happening on this computer, not the other two.  I've scanned for SPYWARE and viruses, and found nothing.Which operating system are you using? When did this start? Have you made any changes to your system recently? Do you have virus and Spyware protection?
