Answer» Very interesting read, still baffles me that this would only WORK with other devices plugged in. Although you appear to have it resolved I'd maybe also consider trying a different USB hub, even THOUGH I couldn't imagine why a powered USB hub would have this issue.I say this with no authority, but it's something wacky with the USB 1.0. (Yeah, I really "went out on a limb" on that ONE. If the original poster is comfortable, and there are open expansion SLOTS inside the computer, she, or a friend, or a shop professional can install a USB 2.0 CONTROLLER card for about $20 - $30 US (parts) which should do the trick.
