Answer»

my desktop icons and taskbar disappeared. I have to hit ctrl/alt/delete and start programs from the task manager now. everything else seems normal. I CANNOT right click on the desktop to get the icons back - I have only my background picture and a mouse pointer on the SCREEN. I tried system restore, but no luck. Solve : Additional Domain Controler Problem?

Answer»

Hi,

i have a problem in my ADDITIONAL domain controller. i formated and reinstalled Additional server because of the virus infection. now i cannot add my server as a Additional AD.
i have attached here with the my printed error screen. please give me some advic

[file cleanup - saving space - attachment deleted by admin]A LITTLE more info would be helpful. Was this COMPUTER part of the domain before you formatted? If so, did you change the computer name after the format? If this computer was part of the domain and the name has not been changed ACTIVE Directory will think you are attempting to add a duplicate computer name. If this is the CASE, changing the computer name is probably the simplest solution.

Solve : Start menu help!?

Answer»

Ok, I don't know what happend but my taskbar started acting funny like two days ago. First it displayed all of the "main folders" (my DOCUMENTS, my computer, etc.) as programs or files that were already open, and it took up all the room on my taskbar, so I MADE it not display the Quick Launch thing. That didn't work, so I restarted the computer, everything was fine until this morning, I got on and the START menu just dissappeared. So I turned the computer off thinking it might be OK when I got back on tonight, but I got back on tonight, the start menu was still gone, so I hit the windows logo on the keyboard so it would bring up the start menu, I right clicked and made the Quick Launch show up again, but now all the items in the Quick Launch BAR is showing up, not the three that I set. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it!

Solve : Indexing data?

Answer»

Greetings.
I am trying to do a huge inventory of all the data on our server at work. I need to create an index in EXCEL and would like to know if there is a way to copy the filenames of the files in a given folder in the file tree over to a particular column in Excel? Otherwise I will have to click through tens of thousances of files and and PASTE them into Excel. Is there a batch/copy method? Or is there a way to creat a file tree in DOS, copy it into a txt file and then use comma delimited or something to separate it in Excel? I will want the file name and extension in separate columns. THANKS for your help. This should create a csv file that can be imported into Excel. You can MASSAGE the data easier in Excel than in the cmd shell.

Code: [Select]@echo off
for /f "TOKENS=* delims=" %%x in ('dir /a:-d /s /b c:\') do (
echo %%~dx%%~px,%%~nx,%%~xx >> input.csv
)

Change c:\ to any directory.

Good luck.

Solve : "My Computer" very slow when opening up to see drives?

Answer»

Windows XP Media Center, version 2002, Service pack 2. 1.99 GB of Ram, Hard drive: 270 GB, with 250 GM free.

I try to open up "My Computer" and it takes a couple of minutes to view drives. Got any ideas what my PROBLEM could be? From Start/Programs/Accessories/System Tools RUN both diskcleanup and defrag...defrag MAY take awhile if it hasn't been run for awhile...Re-boot.
Open My Computer and under Tools/Options make sure thumbnail view is turned off.

Another reason for slow reaction times with My Computer is if one of the drives is having problems...check their STATUS in Disk Management to verify there are no issues,
How many drives are in this machine ? ?

Solve : Folder background image in XP?

Answer»

Hi all,

Is there a way of changing all folders background's in one GO - instead of editing the .ini files individually for each & every folder?

Here's a guide I found for changing a folders bg image:

I basically want the same image in the bg of every folder.

Oh... & I just noticed that this is my 100th post btw, so wish me happy birthday... book a stripper... that sort of thing Unfortunately, I don't believe there's a way to do what you want. Perhaps you could use a theme program of some sort; I don't know. There's a program that will change folder backgrounds for you, but I'm quite sure it only does one at a time and doesn't have a way to set a design as the default. Thanks for getting back to me anyway mate, appreciate it.Neljan, I booked a stripper for you. HOWEVER, I have no idea where to send her . . . . That is a problem...

Alright then you have her, but tell me what she was like eh?

When I called I said I wanted to get the most for my money. They sent me a 500 lb stripper; I nearly suffocated when she threw her bra on my head. When she TRIED to DANCE on the table it collapsed and she fell on my dog, who is now in traction. I guess you should be glad I didn't know where to send her. LMFAO!

Good job she didn't lap dance for you... you may have died!

(or got lost for while... a smelly while)

Solve : Multiple launch of software with single mouse click?

Answer»

My computer has recently developed a very STRANGE problem (it is a 3 year old HP). When it is first turned on, or activated from stand-by mode, a single CLICK on an icon (usually outlook or internet explorer) launches that piece of software 30, 40, or 50 times before I can stop it--usually by hitting escape or end. This has just started. I ran a virus scan and nothing showed up, and I am at a loss.
Any helpful ideas would be appreciated on how to fix this problem. What kind of mouse are you using (MAKE, model, USB, PS/2 or wireless)? Does it have a software suite associated with it? Have you tried a different mouse?

Solve : Computer is shuting off randomly?

I've tried restoring back to factory default but still have the same problem, this is the first time I have had this kind of problem. Do I have to re/format
My system is Windows xp service pack 2. When it shuts off it reboots automatically again and performs a scandisk and fixes them but it still shuts off RANDOMLY and does it again
can anyone help please. Need...more...info...gasp

Operating system / ANTIVIRUS & antispyware protection / service packs installed / when did it start HAPPENING / did it ever work right / installed any new software?

Alan <>< As I was typing a reply to you it shut down again. It started about a week ago I have up to date Norton antivirus running. When it shuts down and reboots itself
it always performs a scandisk and checks my fat32 file system. Seems like something
is attacking my system file I don't know? And your operating system is . . . .? We need to know what operating system you're running (windows XP/98/2000/etc). When scandisk runs does it find any errors and fix them? Could be you need to replace your drive, but with this amount of information we can only guess. Sorry every time I try to reply to your post it shuts down again My operating system is Windows xp HOME edition VER 5.1 service pack 2. Every time scandisk performs a check it makes a lot of correctionsIt seems that theres something wrong with your hard drive. Download and run the diagnostic software from your hard drive manufacturer's website.
ok thanks I'll give it a try

Solve : Trying to reload Win XP but format of hard drive fails?

Answer»

How can I run fdisk or another tool to see what's wrong with the hard drive? I only have a BOOTABLE Win XP CD.

Thanks.
More info please...
Why do you believe something is wrong with your hard drive?
What is the make and model of your hard drive?
Could you POST the specifications of your computer?
If your computer has a floppy drive go here...

http://bootdisk.com/

Download a boot disk and boot to it (it will have fdisk on it) then run that utility. USUALLY if the drive is going south you will GET 'bad allocation units', which indicates the drive has bad sectors on it.

Solve : Cannot delete invisible files from Recycle Bin in XP Pro?

What causes this? What should I do?First of all, how could you able to erase these files without PERMISSION?
Next question, do you know what these files are?

The fact that access is denied to these files indicate that they are something very important. They should not have been erased.

Are you right-clicking on the TRASH icon and selecting "empty recycle bin"?
Are you the admin?Yes, that is how I am doing it. It is my only work computer (I am a sole-proprietor and the admin). I have never had such files in my Recycle Bin before, so I am very interested to know what these are and why they are showing up now all of a sudden? Do you know what they are?All those are is text files showing repeated attempts to delete the Recycle Bin...
It's a System File and not meant to be deleted...

Solve : msword freeze?

Answer»

often, after i work for a while on a document on ms word, then try to "SAVE" or "save as" the computer freezes. the CPU is at 100% and the HOURGLASS stays on.
after i am able to close ms word, then open it again, i find that everything i have done since the last successful "save" is not saved.
my solution so far has been to "save" after every sentence. or every phrase, so that if something isn't saved, at least it won't be much.
why does it freeze when i try to save? how can i correct this?
thanks.
gorjDid this just start or has it always been this WAY?it happened just a few times a couple of months ago. becoming more frequent, especially on a couple of certain word documents that i work on regularly.
sometimes I copy then PASTE a sentence or paragraph from dictionary.com or another source, and the problem is more frequent after i do that.
i've been staying away from that process for the most part lately.
it's frustrating to work for a while, then have it freeze and erase the latest work.

Solve : How to Install XP on a HP Pavilion dv3525ef?

Answer»

Hello guys,

I am battling to install XP either sp2 or sp3 on a HP Pavilion dv3525ef, i tried going to BIOS to disable SATA mode, unfortunately it is not listed there. I goggled for this problem and most SUGGESTIONS is to use a USB floopy which i don't have, i am thinking of downgrading the BIOS for this Notebook but i don't get it on HP WEBSITE. If anyone managed to install XP on this kind of notebook please help.
I have been the all day struggling and the only THING i get is a BSD.

Please help.Do you have the sata drivers? If not, that's what you need. You can either integrate them into the OS using a program line nlite (slipstreaming) or burn them to cd and switch cds when the system asks if you have sata drivers.

You CANNOT downgrade a bios and can cause real problems if you try. Anyway, assuming the issue is INDEED the sata drivers, the bios has nothing to do with your problem. You didn't say what the blue screen error is, so this is partially conjecture on my part. Thanks for your quick reply

The BSD error is 0x0000007B (0xF78D2524, 0xC0000034)

I am planning to use the Intel SATA AHCI Controller Driver, SoftPaq SP32478.exe, which i Downloaded from hp.

Do i have to burn these files on the CD as Bootable or just normal Data files?

I already tried slipstreaming with nLite still no luck, so i will try burning it as per your suggestion.

Any more input is welcomed.
ThanksNormal data files
And I'm surprised about nlite -- I've slipstreamed sata drivers into sp3 a couple of times with no problem.Perhaps i am using the wrong SATA drivers for this Laptop while slipstreaming in nLite.

I copied the SATA drivers files to a CD, booted from xp cd pressed F6, pressed S and i got the following error.
Setup could not find a floopy drive on your disk.
* Press ESC to cancel loading OEM drivers
* F3 to quit setup

Like i said i dont have a a USB Floopy drive.

Any idea?I'm assuming when you pressed S the cd with the drivers was in the cd drive, yes? If so, we're back to nlite.Well if thats is the solution, then i guess we are back on nLite.

Solve : CPU won't connect to internet, Laptop/Xbox/Ps3 via Router is fine.?

Answer»

Hello, first time poster. Please direct me to the correct forum if this is not the place to put this, thanks. =P

So my computer all of a sudden will not connect to the internet. Everything was fine last week, I check everyday and it has not come back. My computer is CONNECTED to a router and the laptop downstairs works fine, and the video games played online through the Xbox and PS3 works fine. I have a phone picture of ipconfig /all if you want to see it. ip shows 0.0.0.0 even when hardwired directly to the modem. I've tried unplugging everything from the modem. I've tried resetting winsock, but nothing works.

Can anyone help?

thank uTry This...

Re-boot after running...Sorry about the delay, I had to get a flash drive. I ran the program and it ran successful, even had that scary beep in the end. Restarted and it's still the same. Can anyone else try to help me or have suggestions for me to try?

When I say wireless, I meant to say that the laptop in a different room works because of the router. The xbox and ps3 plays fine online through it's wireless. The computer is hooked up to the router directly and the computer is not wireless.

I'll check the control panel. thx for the help so farA brand new NIC card if it's a desktop will run you 10 to 15 Bucks...may be worth it for a test...Any NIC card will work? They're PRETTY much all the same...yes.How about a different ethernet cable?

Some people, mainly Americans I think, use "CPU" when they are referring to the system box of a desktop computer system. I have actually heard Brits calling this item the "hard drive".
Yes, I understand now that a cpu is not what I thought it was short for (computer lol). I will say tower or harddrive from now on. I'm learning a lot while trouble shooting this problem. My brother installed a cheap $30 NIC card/updated the driver/etc and it still does not connect. The OLD ethernet outlet is still there because it can not be removed. Under networks, it says that the new ethernet is acquiring network address but ipconfig /all now shows two unconnected devices and the new nic card.

Solve : defrag problem.?

Answer»

I was defragging my computer...checked it was on 36%..when i went back to see if it had finished an hour later the computer had turned itself off. When i turned it on again it goes to the windows screen as if about to start and the goes to a black screen with details of starting it up in safe mode and saying windows did not start up. I have a old windows xp disc which i have tried to boot from but it keeps asking to format the drives which i think would wipe all the data etc from my pc. Can anyone help please. Boot to the recovery console (boot to the xp cd and choose the first repair option) and run chkdsk /R
Then reboot. Tell us what happens. It gives me two options.. select H:\I386 or H:\MiniNT. I selected the first and put in what you said and it came up.... The command is not recognized.WHAT gives you two options?Hi Allan,
I tried chkdsk /r again and this time it came up with ....The volume serial number is 425f-f05a and then said CHKDSK is checking the volume.....CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery.
It then finished and said it found 7296192 many kbytes TOTAL disk space and 3421004 kbytes are available with 4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
It then said 1824048 total allocation units on disk and 855251 allocation units available on disk.
It then went to H:\I386.
Do you have two windows installations? And why are you booting to h: drive??Hi Allan,
I dont know why its gone to h drive. I just put the xp disk in the drive and thats where it took me.

As you can see im not very good with computers .Okay, your hd is apparently VERY corrupted. You can try slaving it to a drive on another system and try to retrieve the data. But I think in the end you are GOING to have to reformat it. Please feel free to WAIT for a SECOND opinion. Thanks for you help Allan.Wish I could be of more help. Sorry.

Solve : can't defrag. not enough space..?

Answer»

did defrag bout 2 months ago with 30% free. now only about 6 mb free. my swon was doing a game on line and mentioned a proplem after. how do i free up space?(have checked for new files etc and nothing new)BACKUP and delete anything that's important...1) Delete all temp files
2) EMPTY the recycle bin
3) Empty the temporary internet files folder
4) If you do not need system restore, disable it. This will immediately free up a GREAT deal of space. NOTE - all restore points will immediately be deleted.First thing I would do is delete that game. Makes me wonder if the game was the only thing downloaded. Could have also been a lot of junkware that piggybacked on top of the game.

Solve : catastropic failure?

Answer»

I'm having problems connecting to certan websites. Some tell me I need Active-X?!
Others times i get a message the says my security settings dont allow me to view this site. Other time i click on a link and a new internet explorer window opens and nothing loads and the screen stays white. Also everytime I try to save a website as a favorite i get a message the read something like:
Cant not save the file " Website name" Catastropic FAILURE.

Im sure all this has to to with my system crashing sometime ago but I restored it. I had to recover it by using the copy sytem32/ commads ( excuse me for not remebering the exact commands, but maybe like all my applications that i had to reload, do i now have to adjust my internet options as well ??Dazed and confused...

Thanks in advance. You gave have been great......Not knowing the exact problems you had or have, I'd suggest you do one of two things:

1) Do a repair install of the OS (boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair OPTION and allow XP to install on top of itself) or
2) Try a different browser (Firefox, for example)Just ta bring ya up to speed:

Originally my computer crashed and I was getting the message below:.

Stop: C0000218 ( Registry file failure )
The registry cannot load the hive ( file )
\systemroot\system32\config\software
or its log or alternate

I was instructed to do use the commands below to fix my pC and it worked.

ren c:\windows\system32\config\software software.old
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config

However internet usage has been strain, since. You u say I should perfrom an XP Repair.
Why dont you try using a different browser.

If still doesnt work and since you already had your registry hive corrupted, then i think it would be better to follow the suggestion from Alan.

Quote

Do a repair install of the OS (boot to the XP CD and choose the SECOND repair option and allow XP to install on top of itself)
Sounds good. I will give it a try ASAP. You PEOPLE have been great. Thanks again.

When you replaced the software hive with the original you essentially brought the pc back to the day the OS was installed and no software had been installed.I tried the XP CD repair process and everything appears back to normal ! Thanks you GUYS rock ! ! Glad you got it sorted out.

Solve : Open/Save dialog?

Answer»

Hi, I've been scanning my computer for spyware/viruses with a bunch of DIFFERENT freeware removal software, but for some reason my computer won't bring up the "Open"/"Save As" dialog. What gives?More information please. EXACTLY what is the problem, when does it occur, and what led up to it?It seems it just happens on random programs at different times. Solve : 'My Documents' Crashes everything.?

Answer»

I have been the last 6 hours trying to sort out my laptop.

I can START it up OK and get into and use the internet as you can see. However as soon as I attempt to access any of my progs from the Desktop, the whole lot freezes. Nothing will kick start it. Using the Ctrl/Alt/Del will not work. I can move the arrow with the mouse but neither L or R button works anything. I am running Windows XP; Home 3.
Recently had a big 'Update' from Microsoft! The only way I can get up and going again is by pulling the mains plug and removing the battery PACK. All starts upfine, can get into the web, but, try gaing access to any of my progs on the 'C' Drive, Crash!
Laptop, TOSHIBA, about 30 months old. Memory using about 60%. Tried to remove 'Win Defender' but it will not let me.What protection apps do you have ? ?

Never heard of it...
Neither had I... a quick search reveals that it has several design flaws, one of which is that it will not start UNLESS you have an active internet connection. That includes when you have a virus stopping your internet from working. Most of it's features, from what I read, are extremely basic, which it's firewall being extremely so- (do you want to allow explorer.exe? do you want to allow iexplore.exe?) and so on for every single process that tries to access the internet).

Also, it seems to be heavily involved in "affiliate" programs, whereby techs are paid to "recommend" it to their customers.

For some reason I find that last part disgusting. If you want to be recommended to techs customers, make a useful product, don't pay off unscrupulous techs.

Seems like a severely limited product, and free offerings like those from AVG, Avast, Avira, malwarebytes, and so forth all fare a lot better at finding malware and viruses.

So, the first step would be to try running another program. Or, more precisely, follow the guide hereHave tried the Mallwarbytes' Anti-Malware, both Quick and Full.
Both freezes after about 9 seconds with the clock stopping showing
[1524] C:\windows\system32\WLDAP32.dll

Will not 'Pause', 'Abort' nor 'Exit' using the buttons and clicking on the 'x' does nothing. No way of getting rid of it other than as I said in original message, Main/battery removal.
Cannot now even open 'Control Panel' from the Start Window.

PS. I even done a 'Restore' this morning to last Friday, but it masde no difference.PANIC OVER.

Suddenly, without warning, the 'System Care' Prog that I opened this morning and froze, suddenly came to life and appeared on screen, even though the laptop had been shut down about a dozen times since it was activated. It started a scan, quickly found 1 problem in 'System Optimization', cleaned it and, fingures crossed, every thing is now running OK.
HOWEVER, I should like to thank those of you who took the trouble to repond to my plea for HELP. Thanks again, Pete.
PS. The Anti-malware prog has also come back to life, restarting where it froze some while ago. Who invented the B... Computer...

Solve : XP Theme Changes to Another?

Answer» Running: Windows XP Professional
--------
When I turn on my laptop and log into my acct, the original Windows Theme is there. But then after about 45 mins, the theme changes into this Windows Classic-looking theme. It only stays like that for about half-a-minute, then it RETURNS to the normal Windows Theme.

OTHER INFO:
I had Norton WinDoctor Portable about a month ago. I checked a box that said something about the 'theme', and I was using the theme it had (which my PC changes to every 45 mins). WinDoctor soon became UNUSABLE so I deleted it.

Solve : Editing Registry?

Answer»

Win XP Home/Pro SP.3+

I'm trying to change how the date is displayed by editing the value data at HKCU/Control Panel/International/iDate, the value changes but the displayed date format does not even after a reboot. When I change the date format thru' the GUI the registry value data changes and so does the displayed date format.

Is it not possible to change the displayed date format by editing the registry?

Actually it can be done via Control Panel/ Date and Time...PATIO - would you elaborate please?

I can only find how to set the Date/Time/Time_Zone and Synchronization in Control Panel>Date and Time not how to alter the date format. I have been using CP>Regional and Language Options>Customize>Date to alter the date format.

ThanksQuote from: T.C. on June 10, 2010, 02:39:49 AM

I have been using CP>Regional and Language Options>Customize>Date to alter the date format.
And, that does not stick? It does for me, including after a restart. Exactly what change in format are you trying to make?he's not changing it through that control panel...

He noted clearly in his original post that it when he uses the control panel, but he needs to change it via the registry for whatever reason.

My best guess as to why would be some sort of multi-computer/user deployment of settings. I take it the Group Policy Editor was not up to this task and the next best thing is a regedit script?

Not sure if this will help, but:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/241671

Basically, I would suspect that while you are changing the specified value in the registry and that change is sticking, it is evidently not the only key that is being changed. by changing the .default profile setting, you can change the setting used with all new profiles (and, according to the article, all present users). I have no idea if this would work with a ROAMING profile though.Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 10, 2010, 08:25:55 AM

I hope he posts again and confirms what you said. I'd like to know why he needs/wants to do this via the registry instead of through Control Panel. Quote from: Soybean

Yes, changing thru' CP>Regional & Language POSES no problem and historically this is how it has been done.

On the button as usual BC_P. Thank you for the link to KB241671, I'll GIVE it a go but find that it applies to Win NT Server, NT Workstation, Win98 and Win95 only.

Patio hasn't yet had time to respond so looking forward to his input.

Thanks for your interest.

Finally solved. Despite having a document which states that iDate "Determines how dates are displayed" it doesn't, sShortDate does. When the date format is changed thru' Control Panel>Regional & Language Options one or both value data entries may be changed but the sShortDate value data entry can be changed using Regedit and the date retrieved/displayed in a different format WITHOUT the need to reboot.

Took a while but well worth the effort.

Solve : reinstalling windows xp?

I downloaded a driver update on my Dell computer. I got a blue screen and error messages. I then brought up windows xp in safe mode. I ran msconfig
to try and isolate the problem but could not isolate it.
I decided to reinstall windows xp after doing an erase *.* and a format c:
from the DOS prompt. I then started up the computer, booting it from drive e. Drive e: had the windows installation disk in it (original disk that came with the computer). The disk started to install but stopped at a message
that asked me to find a file called "c:ele5132.sys" No idea where or what
that is -- (I did a reinstall once before and all I had to do was swap discs in
and out to install DRIVERS, etc.) I am baffled. I can't bring up safe mode
anymore. I can boot up and hit f2 for system info or hit f12 to install again
but I don' get any further than that same message.Gently clean the XP CD with a soft lint-free cloth...
Don't rub in a circular motion but RATHER from the center outwards...Hi,
It seems the OS Disk is corrupted, so is not working.
You can try installing from a new disk and see if it works.
As you have mentioned you tried couple of times got the same message. As mentioned above you can try cleaning the disk and see if it works.With more than 50 reloads of XP under our BELTS here, we've come across missing file issues before, and in all LIKELYHOOD the disk is bad as suggested;

however it could also be either of the following;

1) a faulty optical drive (if you have another spare then try this one first)
2) a bad stick of memory causing the FILES to get corrupted when extracted from the .cab (cabinet files) on the disk.

Let us know how you get on

Please I am having problem trying to install my wireless broadband. I have tried all the troubleshooting tactics that I kow of but it still won't come up. I am working on Acer Extensa 4220.

"Wireless broadband" can mean one of a few things:

1) Wireless Internet service, often provided through rural areas, but in some suburban and urban areas as well (although the pricing is usually not competitive with the standard cable/DSL/fiber offerings).
2) Cellular modem on a laptop, usually a PCMCIA, an ExpressCard, or a USB cellular modem provided by a cell PHONE service provider, like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, etc. in the United States.
3) A wireless router or wireless access point connected to a standard broadband cable/DSL/fiber modem (in this case, the term "Wireless Broadband" might be a misnomer, but the jury's still out on that one). Of course the router could be connected to a cellular router (combining #2 and #3) or a wireless Internet provider's supplied modem (combining #1 and #3).

So which one of these do you mean?If you have already plugged in your router and been through the setup discs that you no doubt recieved try viewing this video to see if it canhelp you DIAGNOSE where the fault is (either between your wireless and the router, or the router and the internet)

Solve : 0x000000ED error on boot, Unmountable_boot_volume?

Answer»

Hello, recently my other computer, A Windows XP, has become unable to boot due to the error:
0x000000ED (Unmountable_boot_volume). To be honest, I think the computer can't boot because it was shut off with 0kb in it's C:\ drive, but I don't see how that would make the computer un-bootable. One thing to note was my computer oddly started getting slowdown, had 0kb memory in the C:\ drive when I had downloaded nothing (the night before, it had around 8gig) and an error on the bottom right claimed a windows update wasn't able to complete it's WRITING process....I never gave the computer permission to update. Well, I was told by my father to shut off the computer because it was running so slow (bad idea, and I knew it was....but I listened) and it was unable to re-boot.

To cut to the chase, I have tried multiple methods of REPAIR, and they have failed. I tried the recovery console and then tried to run chkdsk, chkdsk /p, and chkdsk /r. I was met with this error: The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems. I also tried deleting unimportant files (I had memorized their parameters, and they were just games ) but I was told that "access is denied" which is quite ODD. When I tried Safemode, it stopped at mup.sys.

I apologize for all the details, but I'm trying to see if there is a specific fix for my problem. Thanks!

Okay, I'll bite. What do you mean it was shut off with 9kb in c: drive?Quote from: Allan on June 10, 2010, 01:30:32 PM

Okay, I'll bite. What do you mean it was shut off with 9kb in c: drive?
I mean that it literally had no space left in the c:\ drive, so if I wanted to download a text document or install a program I couldn't, and it was weird because I had downloaded nothing that week

Another note: my XP is not a x86-based computer, so I cannot use FIXMBR or FIXBOOTSo you mean the c: drive was FULL - yes?

If so you probably have some form of malware. Start by running a boot time av scan.Errr...I'd have to look that up, I'm UNFAMILIAR with a boot time av scan. Thanks for being so helpful.

edit: It appears that I need to run it in safe mode(That's what an article says, it could be wrong) to start up the scan, how would I do that, since as soon as i boot in safe mode the boot stops at mup.sys. I can't boot up my computer, I can only run recovery console. Anything else (recent settings that worked, safe mode, normal mode) Just cause the computer to restart during boot-upQuote
I don't see how that would make the computer un-bootable
That's exactly one of the ways to make the computer un-bootable.

If you suspect, you may be dealing with some infection, I suggest, you post in malware forum. They can access your drive, using OTLPE CD.
If you don't think, any malware is involved, there are two reasons and options:

1. Unmountable_boot_volume error often means bad drive, so...
Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287 (or http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html)
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "Write image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, unfortunately, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

2. The drive is good, but it's not bootable, because of lack of a free space - slave the drive in another computer, or use USB hard drive enclosure to move some stuff out.If you do choose to run a boot time scan, select and download one from the link below, burn it to disc, and boot to it. It runs at boot from outside the OS, not in safe mode. You never have to boot past the cd:
http://www.google.com/search?hl=&q=boot+time+av+scanner&sourceid=navclient-ff&rlz=1B3GGGL_enUS369US309&ie=UTF-8We had recently changed form Mcafee virus scan to Norton, and when we did we then backed up the computer. Since that was about 30-50 days ago, I'm considering just slaving the drive, taking some recent important data off it (resumes, video files), putting it in the other, healthy drive, and then recovering usable settings with the Norton backup. Is this process possible? Sounds good on paper, but something could go wrongQuote
I'm considering just slaving the drive, taking some recent important data off it (resumes, video files), putting it in the other, healthy drive
The above, would be the best first step. Freeing some space and see, if that will make the drive bootable again. Most Windows computers have underlying registry problems which can cause poor performance and error messages. If your computer is running slowly or you are getting error messages, like the Stop 0x000000ED Error, you should perform a free registry scan now. This will help you speed up your computer and improve its performance. A free scan will also help solve error messages and make sure your machine is running properly. Ignore this advice. It is utter and complete nonsense.hello,

this is very easy. follow this steps -

1. insert your OS bootable cd in your cd rom.
2. go to bios setup select first boot device CD-Rom.
3. then your system start with CD . after that select RECOVERY CONSOLE option.
4. select OS drive
5. then type CHKDSK /P.

First, there is no such option as "Recovery Console Option". The option is to repair or recover the existing OS installation (press "R"). It does not say anything about the Recovery Console. Second, the command should be chkdsk /r not /p. Third, none of this will help an "unmountable boot volume" error.

These are normally sold with the COA and Windows XP.
The fact that you got it with no OS would indicate that it was sold AS IS and for parts only. If the vendor did not clearly indicate this, go to eBay customer support and file a complaint. If you have a KEYBOARD PLUGGED into the PS/2 connection and it's not seeing it, then your mobo is more likely the culprit than the keyboard, but I agree with the other poster. Well, all I did was add two new user accounts (my kids) to this old laptop. Somehow, my computer decided to uninstall Windows 2003, and install XP.
That is absolutely, positively 100% impossible. How did you try system restore if Windows is uninstalled?

When you start the computer, exactly what happens? For example:

1. Press the power button.
2. Boot screen appears with manufacturer logo
3. Windows loading screen
4. Choose account and enter password
5. Desktop loads.
I know it's a little late for your son's essay, but we could still be helpful in case something like this happens in the future. In order to be helpful, we need more info:

1) How did you add the user accounts? Did you
a) Add them through Server 2003's LOCAL Users and Groups snap-in?
b) Have Active Directory installed and you added them through Active Directory Users and Computers? Or did you...gasp...
c) install Windows XP on top of Server 2003 and add the user accounts through XP?

2) How were you able to use System Restore? Windows Server 2003 doesn't have System Restore out of the box. Did you add/mod/hack it in?

3) Is this a dual-boot setup--meaning you had Server 2003 on one partition and XP on the other?

4) Are you sure this is running Server 2003? It's not uncommon for those with beginner experience with PCs to confuse Windows operating system versions. Sometimes people confuse versions of Windows with versions of Office (or its components, like WORD, Excel, Outlook)! Which leads to...

5) Was OFFICE 2003 uninstalled, rather than WINDOWS 2003? I noticed you didn't call it Windows SERVER 2003, which is what the operating system with "Windows" and "2003" is called.

or...even more farfetched...

6) Same as #5...it's not WINDOWS that's uninstalled. It's OFFICE, except in this scenario, Office was not uninstalled. Instead, when creating a new profile (user account), and logging in as that new user, Office 2003 likes to do the "Please wait while installing Microsoft Office 2003..." ROUTINE. This could have been mistaken for an "uninstall."

Or...just when you all thought i was done with these off-the-wall conclusions, hehe:

7) Same as #6, except the .doc file (Space Age Rookie's son's essay) is in the old user profile...probably on the Desktop or in the "My Documents" folder, and Space Age Rookie can't find the file, since it's "no longer in the same location." Log in as the original user and see if the file is there.

...and since I really, REALLY think that #5, #6, AND #7 are likely, there are some morals to this whole story:

1) Windows is NOT Office!
2) Office is NOT Windows!
3) Every user in Windows (from NT all the way to Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2) has their own Desktop and (My) Documents folder (among other things). If you log in as a different user, you will not...I repeat, N O T see the same files as you would see as if you logged in with the original user name (and password if it had one). Again, log out as the new user and log in as the original user, and see if the files are there.
4) Keep a copy of your installation discs handy. You never know when you'll need them.
5) If in doubt, OpenOffice can save the day if it's too late for #4 to apply here. Go to http://www.openoffice.org and download it from there. one other thing, check the amount of space you got left on your computer, that may be an indication that files are still on your computer, just somewhere and you just need to fish it out.

Solve : Trying to recover from a crash.?

Answer»

I am trying to recover from a crash.

Here is my story. I have just moved. I have two computers. One computer has an XP operating system. By means of one of those MONITOR, mouse and keyboars switcher, I used the same monitor and mouse and keyboard for each computer. In my new place where I just moved to, I decided to have the two computers seperate and so I went out and bought a new keyboard and mouse for the XP.

After I set everything up, I noticed a problem. When I booted up the computer, I saw it did some error checking or scanning of the hard drive. It showed that I now have 4 bad sectors on the hard drive. Then the boot up proces stopped.

So now I have lots of questions.

  • Am I correct in assuming that I can revive my computer by re-installing the Windows XP OS and the installation program will be able to do an evaluation of the hard drive and modifiy the OS accordingly?
  • For some reason I cannot access my BIOS when I reboot. Is this because I am using a new keyboard and the new keyboard has a USB connection instead of the old style connection that the original keyboard had?

No.

I had a look at
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314058

My computer came with three CD's None of the three are called the "Windows XP installation disc". Instead I have one called the "System recovery" disc. This must be the one that I can use. I will see if I can make use of this.

In the mean TIME, I have some more information and questions.

I switched to my original keyboard and I found that I could press f8 at start up and get into safe mode. Then I was able to launch safe mode at a dos prompt. But then when I typed "chkdsk r" it said it could not put a lock on the hard drive because another process was running.

I might have difficulty booting the computer so that it recognizes the CD drive as the boot drive. I might need to go into the BIOS and make some adjustments to make this happen. How do I do this? I thought I could get there by pressing F8. What is the magic key I need to press during start up to go into the BIOS setting setup?1) Please just follow instructions
2) Download the recovery console .iso and burn it to a cd using an .iso burning utility (http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=150212)
3) Go into the bios and make sure your cd drive is at the TOP of the boot order. To get into the bios, watch the screen as soon as your system boots. You should see a MESSAGE that says "press for setup (or bios)". As soon as you see that message, start tapping that key. After making the change in bios (AND ONLY THAT ONE CHANGE) make sure you save the change on exit
4) Boot to the Recovery Console and run chkdsk /r

If you still have problems getting into bios, post the manufacturer and model of your system.

Solve : Animated Avatars?

Answer»

Friends send me "animated avatars" but when I "Save as Is" the SAVED AVATAR is not animated anymore upon usage to another WEBSITE or e-mail. Is there a problem regarding gif. and jpg.? Well, for starters, JPG images aren't animated.

Where are these friends sending you these pictures? In email? Some messenger service?

What method are you using to save them?Hi,

@Quaxo;
There are animated JPG images. Go to the below link:

Emory, you may be saving it in different way.
Open the Image in browser then right click on it.
Click on Save Image As then save it on your computer then see if you are able to save it with animation.

FAIL. That's an optical illusion, not an "animated JPG".

Thanks for the laugh though. They are sent to me via e-mail, which means I have no idea what extension they have. Also try to Save from websites.
I agree: that was allusion.
What email are you using, i.e. Yahoo, Gmail, Hotmail, OUTLOOK?The Jpeg link is an optical illusion as stated, but it is a good one

The files you should be saving are .gif format, which basically contain several static images that rotate round in ORDER to produce an animation.

Depending on your browser it may not allow you to right click and save the image in it's original format.

Saving the image to a .jpeg or any other format will cause it just to save the 1st or current image.

Solve : Help write a .bat file?

Answer» HELLO,
This is my first post.
I am LEGALLY blind and only have use of one hand (NOT my
right hand, of course). I found a program that will speak the time for me but it needs to 'see' a control+alt+s to do it.
Would somebody write a .bat file that would 'press' that key combination for me?
I have a Remote Wonder 2 that I can program to run a batch file, but I have no idea how to 'simulate' key presses.

Thanks in advance very much for your help!
Eric T.
If you need to simulate key presses then i would suggest you take a LOOK at a very resourceful free program called autohotkey

It's very easy to useA script in autohotkey to do this action would simply be

---------------------
Send, {CTRLDOWN}{ALTDOWN}s{ALTUP}{CTRLUP}
----------------------

It can also be compiled into an executable so that it can be run nice an easily.

Hope that's what you're after and I'm not barking down the wrong tree.THANK YOU GUYS SOOO MUCH!!!!
I downloaded Autohoikey, pasted your script into the 'recorder' and converted it into an exe file.

Now I can get the time while watching TV in fullscreen, listening to FM radio (my All-In-Wonder card has a radio tuner too), watching DVD movies etc.
I truly appreciate the help!

Thanks again!

Eric T.
Glad i could be of help, and if it worked fine for you just click the Thanks option in the post thread to let people know.

VBScript:
Code: [Select]Option Explicit
Dim objShell, WshShell
set objShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
objShell.SendKeys "^%s"
WScript.Quit

save as dot VBS. double-click to run.

Solve : Slow laptop?

Yeah yeah the first time I ran the windows boot time chkdsk. Recovery console said it found errors... Anyway what should I do now?Quote from: Allan on June 14, 2010, 05:39:56 PM

Sorry BC, but when run from the recovery console chkdsk /r ALWAYS reports that it found and repaired one or more errors
Code: [Select]C:\WINDOWS>Chkdsk C: /r
Volume created 06/14/10 05:05p
The volume Serial Number is 0cdb-edec
CHKDSK is checking the volume...
CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery...
CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery...
CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery...
CHKDSK has finished checking the volume.
4184900 kilobytes total disk space.
3089956 kilobytes are available.

4096 bytes in each allocation unit.
1046225 total allocation units on disk.
772489 allocation units available on disk.

C:\WINDOWS>

one could say that "CHKDSK is performing additional checking or recovery..." means there is an error, but it doesn't. in fact, you will always see at least three of them with chkdsk /r as it checks file records, security descriptors, and finally does the surface scan. (that is- additional checking).

If CHKDSK finds an error it will state "CHKDSK found and fixed one or more errors on the volume." instead of the "CHKDSK has finished checking the volume." text in the above code block.

That was actually a huge PITA to get, too. had to reinstall a new XP VM because VMWare has this unbridled love for SCSI.Quote from: asdf45df on June 14, 2010, 06:16:50 PM

Anyway, since I had no idea what this thread was about (heh) I decided to reread it from start to finish.

And let me get this straight people-

his youtube videos are running slow and consuming 100% CPU, and somehow suggestion has involved the hardware? why is that?

Nobody pursued the fact that Only sites using flash consume 100% of the CPU (edit- ok, it seems Soybean sort of touched on this). for some reason, like the original poster, I can see absolutely zero relationship to the problem and hardware.

CPU usage is normal with the browser closed and with the browser viewing sites without flash.

Quote
I have the latest version of flash installed.

Actually- somehow people missed this- but this may be the problem. the latest version of flash is slower then older versions, period. my 1.6Ghz P4 had similar issues when I installed the Flash 10 plugin into FF (FF consuming 100% CPU and requiring a end process to fix on any site using flash if I leave the window open too long, random crashes, etc).

Now, I never tried any other browser, but I think the POINT should be that the latest version of flash simply doesn't work well with older hardware.

Can you try an older version of flash? for FF the one that works best in my experience is the flash 8 plugin. (ALTHOUGH it has the disadvantage of not allowing you to view youtube video's in HD).

Also, here is something you can try to absolutely without a doubt confirm if (or if not) flash is the culprit:

download Process Explorer

Now, we want to make sure Firefox doesn't gobble up all the CPU time and make it hard to use Process explorer to diagnose, so my first suggestion would be to right click on firefox in the top pane of process explorer and set it's priority to "below normal".

Now, use firefox until you encounter the same 100% issue. This is where the "fun starts".

Optionally at this point, you could choose the "suspend" the firefox task via process explorer. Just remember to set focus to anything in firefox, or things will get really wonky. This way, you can inspect the state of Firefox during this period of intense activity and determine what is causing it. It's not neceessary, but it can make some steps a lot easier (some stuff changes really quickly in the various dialogs as the process runs, suspending it stops it from running, therefore making it easier to copy that stuff down)

right click on firefox in process explorer's upper pane, and select "properties". Now choose the "threads". This is where you can isolate which thread is monopolizing the CPU. sort by the CPU tab, and see which DLL's are consuming the most process time. my personal suspicion would be a Flash DLL. for me, the flash DLL is "NPSWF32.dll", but the newer plugins might have a different name. If you are feeling bold, you could even try killing or suspending some of the threads, but this might make firefox very unstable (but hey, the worst that can happen is it crashes and you can just restart it). In either case, I'd say to LIST off some of the higher CPU using threads of firefox. NOTE that the "Start Address" is usually in the form

executable!functionname!offset

Whatever the case, "executable" is what will be most useful (if the highest CPU using thread has a function name and offset, that could be useful too). COPYING this down into notepad or onto a piece of paper is made a lot easier if you suspend the firefox process entirely.

Finally someone's on the same page as me

I installed flash 8 and the videos run smooth now - the quality of the videos is much worse however, it looks worse than the 360p quality with flash 10. CPU usage is around 70% now. Seems like the CPU usage is lower because of the lower quality, seems like sweeping the problem under the rug but hey, I'll take it if it's the best I can get.

Should I try flash 9 or is it just as bloated as flash 10?Ahhh, so an issue with Flash the whole time. Always the simple stuff.

Have you tried the recent 10.1 upgrade?

I would say stay on Flash 8 for now if 10.1 doesn't work, but that could mean exposing yourself to potential security issues that may have never been addressed in Flash 8.

Solve : Looking for a program that can associate icon with file type.?

Answer»

Hi,

I am LOOKING for a tweak or utility program that will permit me to easily associate icons with particular file types. (I have no trouble associating programs with files types). The problem arises especially with media players that want to associate themselves with every type of media file.

Specifically, I use a program called '1by1' to play both .mp3 and .wav files. I want to use the 1by1 programs older version icon for .mp3 files and the newer version icon for .wav files. I have extracted both icons from 1by1.exe and managed to associate .mp3 with the old icon, but for some reason can't seem to associate the new icon with .wav files.

It is a pain to have to delve into windows Folder Options and try to get things to work as desired. It's certainly not an INTUITIVE process. Does anyone know of a program that will do this easily?
- - - - - - - - -
...A few minutes later...Okay, went back and tried again to do it manually and succeeded. Yeh! But still, it would be a lot easier with a program that could easily do it for me.
Found:

Just in case anyone is interested, I found a nice LITTLE freeware program that does the job fairly easily also. Program is called " Default Programs Editor ". I found it at softpedia.

Also TuneUp Utilities has the feature. Thanks for the info. Default Programs Editor looks like a useful utility. http://www.snapfiles.com/get/defprogedit.htmlThis is something I've laways thought about looking into for so MANY apps to make it nice and CLEAR when browsing folders for files, but never bothered looking at.

The program seems to do the job very well.

Thanks

Solve : change manual scaling permanently?

Answer»

OK.... a couple of weeks ago my computer starting printing out documents at 200%-- I don't know what WRONG button got pushed and my roommate swears she didn't touch the computer.

Now, every time I print I have to go to print properties and turn manual scaling off...... it seems to work for every document in a particular session (i.e., I don't have to keep turning it off) but if I go away and come back I have to sit down and check again. I've searched for help on this and probably am not using the right keywords...... any help here??

THANKS!!What program are you using?

Oops... I guess knowing the program would help!!! Am using Microsoft Word 2000 on Windows XP..... this is so bizarre!Have you tried to go to View and then zoom at the top of the word document and select 100%?

By the WAY, I have seen this before without anyone touching the machine. Most of the time it comes from a document that is "zoomed".

Let me know if this helps you.

I just tried your SUGGESTION..... when i go to view it shows the zoom at 100%. But when I then go to print properties, it is STILL showing 200%.

Thanks for your input.....
