Solve : I hate YaBB right now...?

Answer»

Notice a little, itty bitty problem with the FAQ Solution Database. THERE'S ONLY ONE PAGE!!!

OK, I didn't cause this directly. But this happened right after the following:

I looked at my backup FAQ threads in that area. They were really pointless, since now all of them can be seen and these were duplicates. I removed them. Here is a screenshot showing I ONLY removed my extras:

http://img127.imageshack.us/img127/3843/ohshitdf1.png

Now, all of a sudden most of them can't be seen. The links STILL should work, I tried them. But they aren't visible... as usual.

Prepare to see some duplicates of this post in that forum. I'm thinking that if I bump it back to 2 PAGES we should be able to see it all. AGAIN, I STRESS THAT I ONLY REMOVED MY DUPLICATE THREADS.

Hopefully I didn't totally MESS this up. (I don't think I did, but with YaBB you never know...)

-Dilbert Done. With my quick fix in QA0052 all threads can be seen again.

This really pisses me off that I have to SPAM to keep it working. All I wanted to do was fix my previous mess. Dilbert , I look at your link and I can see a lot of Q/A that dont appear in the list in the Qand A section ........

Exactly what are you doing ?

dl65 Remember when I used my backup of FAQ threads to try to restore the FAQ Solution Database? Well, the way I saw it, since I discovered a temporary solution to the problem there, I no longer NEEDED those backup threads I posted. They were just duplicates of the ones already there. I removed them. (Like I said, these were only my posts. The originals can still be read.)

However, this caused the FAQ Solution Database to only display a small portion of said Database thanks to some YaBB glitch. So, I made "spam" threads to bump the size of the first page back to 2 pages, and this allowed me to use my quick fix to view all of the threads.

So basically, the cleanup I tried to accomplish WENT balls-up and made only part of the FAQ Solution Database visible again, only this time I couldn't use any "quick fix" to make it work. So I made a few empty threads to force the forum to display enough pages that I could implement my method and see all the threads again. So Dilbert you finished breaking it? LOL If you would like, I could give you the syntax for yabb.cgi
...
You can make so many things happen with this.

Solve : Great Forum!?

I'm not sure if I've said this before...maybe I should check my posts, but it really doesn't matter, since this cannot be said enough...

This site has got to be one of the best...if not...the best site I've come across for free computer help.

Right now, business is SLOW...so I browse a lot of forums...offering help where I can. To be honest...since I found this one...I've sort of made it my home.

I used to do Tech Support for a local ISP, but couldn't deal with some of the issues from the owner...that was 4 years ago...when I left...I started Saviour PC. It has since grown and I'm very proud of it.

Unless you're referring to the issue I was having with a Toshiba Hard Drive Utility I was looking for before on a previous post for a customer's HP notebook. Thanks for that info, by the way.

Solve : wireless network.?

Answer»

ok i just ordered my new dell laptop last night and now im looking into wireless networking of my grandma's house. i called the isp and they said they charge 50 bucks for installation and 15 a month for the service, but i think i can do it myself for less. but im not real big on the whole networking thing, i never setup one up ive just managed one. so can some one point me in the right direction. i have networking for dummies but would that help me? ALSO whats a good wireless router? and can i have my grandmas computer wire to the wireless router or not?

TIA

unlovedwarriorI haven't seen networking for dummies but I would think it would be helpful. I have a D-Link DI-524 wireless router. But, I don't want to get into recommendations because this is the only wireless router I've owned, so I don't have experience with other models for comparison. However, I will say I've had no problems with this router; I BOUGHT it about 5 months ago, as I recall.

Like many other routers, my D-Link DI-524 has ports on back for up to 4 computers via cable. This is in addition to the wireless part of it. So, yes, your grandma's computer could be connected to it via CAT5 cable. If her computer does not have an onboard LAN/ethernet connector, you can get ethernet car to install in a PCI slot. They are not very expensive.

What type of Internet service do you have? DSL, cable, dialup?

When you connect a router to your modem, you may need to change your modem's configuration to work with a router. At least, this is what I had to do with my DSL modem. Fortunately, I was able to get TELEPHONE support from my ISP on setting this up, at no additional charge. I believe some ISP's are fussy about this. You might call them and ask them whether settings in the modem would need to be CHANGED if you add a router. See how they respond.

at first i ask them how much the would charge for doing it and its 50 bucks and 15 a month.. would that be a good idea?? or would doing it my self be cheaper?Your goal, in my opinion, should be to set this up with no costs beyond the router and maybe a CAT5 cable, a crossover cable to connect the modem to the router, and a wireless receiver for your laptop if you don't already have that. In other words, no extra fees from your ISP. None. I pay the same monthly fee, when using a router and using multiple computers on the Internet, as I would if I only had one computer connected DIRECTLY to the modem.

dslreports.com is devoted to Internet and networking issues and has a forum. You can probably find some discussions over there on your specific ISP. thanks alot i found a cool little tutorial on networking

Solve : Can a hacker add searches to my search history??

Answer»

Thanks all for your help. I now know where the searches came from - not a hacker- as GX-Man suggested, but a person who had been in my home. I really appreciate the responses and support- you have bebn a real help. This ISSUE is now resolved.

Sincerely,

jewelerI thought GX1_Man said it wasn't a hacker? Well I'm glad you've found the culprit; I just hope it is the right person.Correct. I said it was NOT a hacker. Thanks for posting back, though, and good luck.srry im so late but couldnt they just update they HOST files with the sites so that the othere person could not look at them?Um, that's not really the problem, is it? Rob i think waht he was implying was that if the OP didint want the websites to be visited again, then thats wat they could do..Could be wrong tho.

ChrisIt was past behavior that was the issuei was suggesting to prevent it from happening again couldnt they just put the sites in the host files so the site would be blocked to protect the child. The child was not the one viewing those sites.i know.. but wouldnt that stop the other ADULT from viewing the sites? and cleaning up the history so the child cant accidently view the dirty site.

srry if i dont make sense
You'll understand when you're older.

The major issues here are trust and the safety of the child. The keywords/websites are SYMPTOMS, not the PROBLEM. ok. so its not what they did its that they didnt cmoe out the TELL the true? is that the main problem??The person's behavior was inappropriate and then he lied about it. Trust is essential in a relationship.

Here's some free advice for for you, unloved warrior. Take it to heart and don't forget it. NEVER lie to a woman, especially your woman. (Or you could be known as unhoused warrior )REGARDLESS of bum size?lol k.. now i understand thnx

Solve : Photo Center CD from Wal-Mart ??

Answer»

Has anyone used the Wal-Mart CD for digital photo center? I like the finished photos from there (that’s about all I like at Wal-Mart) but don’t know about using their CD for their photo center on my PC. I don’t want to ADD their program and then find I have trouble with getting it off the PC if it isn’t worth having or if it causes some troubles.

Any thoughts will be helpful and I thank you in advance. ;-)
U2can...... What is contained on the cd , a photo editing program ?
It is probably safe ....... what are your concerns about it ?

dl65 Maybe I'm not understanding your question. I've gone to Walmart to get photos developed; I simply took the xD memory card out of my camera, took it into the store, and put it their digital photo kiosk which allowed me to select which photos to develop, and the size and number of PRINTS for each photo. No CD involved whatsoever. They can make a CD with all of those photos to take with you. I am not aware of any software involved. They are just JPG files.I know some photo developers do put photo editing software on a photo CD. When my neice got married about 2 1/2 years ago and got wedding photos on a CD, the CD had Picasa photo software on it. But, installing it is entirely optional. And, it is a nice photo program.Quote

I may not have given enough info with my post. Sorry

Wal-Mart has a CD disc that they give away to those who would like to do their photo editing at “home” and then upload the files to the INTERNET and sent them to the specific store for printing; after the printing they can then go and pickup the prints, making it one trip to Wal-Mart.

The Wal-Mart photo center gives this cd away free hoping that you’ll use their service for printing. Not a bad deal overall. The cd has editing and ordering online programs via home pc to their stores. It also has an introductory guide to digital photography and a tutorial on using and caring for your digital camera, then they go on to say that the cd has “photo story 3 from Microsoft” and a “HP Yourbook 2005” (create a digital photo yearbook). I’m only interested in the editing and uploading of photos to their photo center for printing, but I know that there are times when you get “extras” that take up space and I’m not sure if I can remove these unwanted programs after they are setup on the pc?

So far it sounds like no one else has used this cd for home pc editing and online ordering via internet to Wal-Mart?

I’d like to know from those who have used it, if it is good or not and if they have had troubles with it? Are you absolutely sure you really need the CD in order to upload photos for developing? I just visited Wal-mart's WEBSITE and it looks to me like anyone can upload photos via Internet Explorer (and maybe other browsers). I did not follow through all the way but I did go to the screen where photos can be uploaded. Up to that point, there was no question about what store you want to pick up your photos, but I presume that question is dealt with before the end of the online procedure.

To start the upload procedure, go to http://www.walmart.com/, click on Photo Center, and proceed. Of course, you need to create a userid and password if you don't already have one.Looks like you have the answer! ;-) I didn’t complete the process however I will give this a try later. It looks like there is no need to use a cd to add software on my pc – unless they download some of it at the time I login and actually have photos to upload for printing?

Thanks soybean for the info.

Solve : File size (KB) variations.?

Answer»

I use Microsoft Works Word Processor to write records of my Family History and create a file in which to keep them. These pages of text are on average between 10 and 14 KB in size.

Sometimes I FIND it necessary to subsequently add or AMEND the information on these records - EITHER change a date or add a place name for example.
QUITE often when I "save" the changes made to the document I notice the 'file size' has jumped from about 11kb to say 69kb.
On other occasions I have added a sentence, or just half a dozen words, and the file size jumps to something daft like 228kb.

Can anyone tell me why? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in anticipation.
Jolyon. it DEPENDS on how to input the information.. if its bigger size different font bolded etc and how much you add..

each character is equal to one byte if it is not modified

Solve : Networking Printer?

Answer»

Hey guys, ive tried to network our Epson Stylus Rx425. The printer is CONNECTED to a PC using Windows XP, and the laptop is using Windows XP as WELL, both with wirleess connections. When i go onto Network PLACES and then click onto QTEC (which is the pc connected to the printer) i can see the printer on the network. But when i try to print something off on the laptop it fails, so i then installed the drivers and it installed WHATS required for network priners. It then says i need to configure it manualy. So i then went on to the 'Properties' of the printer asuming that this is how i get it going manualy, but i dont know which porst it meeds to be assigned to, on QTEC it is assigned via USB, and because its not on the USB on the laptop it wont find it. So how do i get it working?!
I think ive made it clear, if its too confusing ill try to rephrase it.
Anyhelp would be gratefully apprecaited.

ChrisIs this a network printer? If not, you need to set up file and printer sharing. Is that what you're trying to do?No i dont think it is a network printer, but i have enabled printer and file sharing. Am i going in the right direction?! THANKS for reply.

ChrisYes, that's right. Right-click on the printer, and choose sharing. Share the printer; you will then be able to connect to it from the other computer (add new printer-->network).

Solve : thumbnail shows but pic won't load?

Answer»

I have a picture on my computer that does exactly what the title SAYS. I click on it, and it displays the pic in the thumbnail window, but when I open it, it says "Drawing Failed." I know the data must still be there if the thumbnail can display. Can anyone help me?DOUBLE Post...how can it be a double post when the only 2 posts I have are the 2 in this thread? My APOLOGIES...i COULD swear i saw the same question in another thread.

Too much caffiene.

How was the thumbnail created originally ?I'm not sure what you mean by that. It's not a seperate file. in XP, when you click on a pic, it shows a thumbnail of the pic in the details boxCan you open that pic with Paint or some photo editing software?Don't quote me on this but i believe that when Windows thumbnails an image it actually creates it and saves it to the thumbnail cache file...so although you are able to see the thumbnail the original image file could still become corrupt and un-readable...

DLoad and install Irfanview one of the best free image programs out there and see if it can view it.paint won't work, and neither does irfanview. it just shows a very small fragment of the image at the top of the screen. and as for the thumbnail thing, I took this file off of another computer while it was doing this, and moved it on to mine. So unless the thumbnail image is embedded and came with it or something...i REALLY do not think there is anything u can do other than recover the original file....

Solve : transfering files from one computer to another?

Answer»

I am totally NEW at this!!!! I WANT to transfer information from one computer to another, USING my USB drive. I have no idea how to get the information from the computer to the USB drive, nor do I know how to get it off the USB drive into the new compter. I would appreciate help. Thanks ShariWith the USB drive plugged in go to Windows Explorer...(not Internet Explorer)
The USB drive will SHOW up as another drive. Simply drag any files into the USB folder by highlighting them with the left mouse button and DRAGGING them there.

There is also a neat Windows add on called Tweak UI that adds a "send to' command to the right clik menu but we don't yet know what version of Windows you have...Thank you for your advise. I will do that. Then to get them on the other computer I just do the opposite? I have windows Explorer Home Edition.Yes it would be the same procedure...you might have to double-clik on the USB drive for it to display the files you want to transfer.

Solve : Laptop wont load Windows?

Answer»

Specs:
90 MHz Processor
Windows 95
8192KB RAM
HD Approx. 3GB total (hard drive is partitioned)

Problem Description:
My Gateway 2000 (from 1994 or SOMETHING like that) will not start up.
The BIOS load fine, the memory count goes well.
What happens?
After the BIOS load, and the memory is checked and counted, it goes to the normal screen that loads right before Windows 95 comes up.
It says:
Code: [Select]90 Mhz Pentium CPU
External Cache: 256 EnabledWhich is what it normally says.
But the problem is it stops there, and freezes;
Toggling the CAPS lock does change the LCD display indicator.
Nothing happens after this.
I don't know whats causing it.
I don't have any DOS/MSDOS disks around right now, and my XP computer doesnt have a floppy drive.

What may have caused this:
My laptop has this thing called "Suspend" that doesnt seem to exist anymore, but anyways, I put my laptop into suspend mode, and then I removed the battery. (Don't ask why)

An explanation to Suspend Mode for those of you who don't know:
Suspend mode is the quickest way to get into a hibernate like state. It stops all activity, and stops the hard drive. The RAM is not saved to the disk, it is kept in the RAM. The battery gives the RAM power to KEEP the information that resides in it.
Removing the battery looses all information. Therefor, the hard drive cache, and all RAM contents is lost.

I think that I might have lost something important.

Anyone know what I can do as a fix? I will try to get my hands on a floppy disk with MSDOS and Scandisk, but I cant right now.

What should I do?

Thanks to all in advanced.
I have NO av protection, or spyware protection. I cant run them at all. Besides, it doesnt have INTERNET. And I have virus protection on all my other computers (to a certain point) so I cant think of a way that a virus could spread to it.It's not a virus so don't worry there. It is probably aged hardware or a suspecnd problem, as you suspected.

Take the external battery totally out and leave it overnight. Then in the MORNING plug it in without the battery and turn on. (If it will do this.If not, put the battery back in.)

What happens now?I knew you'd be the first one to respond, GX1!
Well, I will be leaving for the weekend.
I will notify you of the outcome ASAP.
Also consider removing the CMOS battery. Location of that varies...Sorry about the Non-ASAP response.
I couldn't find my post!
I thought it was in Computer Hardware or Microsoft Windows...

Anyways, no luck after removing the main battery for a weekend.

I cant really remove the CMOS battery... its a laptop from who-knows-when and I don't want to take it apart today.

I will get ahold of a DOS disk with ScanDisk and do a disk check.

I think my disk was damaged because of my improper shutdown.
At least this isn't Smelt Tech Support.Scandisk didn't fix anything.
I don't know what to do.

Solve : Need some help with a MSWord document?

Answer»

When entering, into the text fields everything goes as planed. However when it calculates the overall total at the bottom automatically, it calculates it *11 it seems. If someone could go over this for me and check it out let me know what I do not understand here that would be great.

Thanks
So you are trying to use Word like a spreadsheet for calculations? And what version is this? And do you have Excel also?
I looked at your Word file and I can't get it to calculate, perhaps because my Word sees it as a read-only file. Doing something like this in Word seems quite odd. I'd much rather use Excel. Microsoft Word 2000 (9.0.2720)

Yeah your right, I might try to import an excel spreadsheet. Just thought that I would be able to do it in word with the text fields, since they can calculate and assign variables. Would have been nice if I could have gotten this to work, to keep all my inner office forms consistent.

Thanks

Paulpls try this:
Remove the text field of Total.
Then go to Insert->Field, under Categories, choose Equations and Formulas, then in Field Properties, click Formula. Use Sum(Above) as default. Click Ok.
Whenever you add the price, go to Total, right click and choose UPDATE field. It will show the correct amount
good luckHey, ghostdog74, that works, but what about a formula for multiplying QUANTITY X Price?i guess you could do that too...by using PRODUCT(qa,qb) etc....Well, surely he would want that, too. Did you look at the file? It has columns for Quantity and Price. Then, the total column must contain Quantity x Price. And then, the sum of the Total column would APPEAR at bottom, based on the formula you gave earlier. However, I can not get a product formula to work. Once I enter a value into the Quantity and Price fields, their character seems to change and a formula in the Total column will not calculate the product. Can you make that work? yes i did look at the document. one thing to note is , i have to fill into the text box ( and not delete it). Also, when i enter value of Qty, i double clicked the text box and i entered "Default number" = some number

for eg on one row

Qty Price Total <-- Qty and Price column still are text field forms.
1.0 2.0 2

In the Total column, i changed to Formula PRODUCT(qa,pa) , instead of a text field FORM.
Then in the final Total, i updated the field by right click.

I don't know whether this is the correct way, but i do get the results finally.
As some posters mentioned, Excel is more suited for this type of work. Thanks for taking time to explain that. And, I got it to work the same as you. But, it still seems very cumbersome, compared to using Excel for such an application. And, that seems to be the consensus here.no problem
yes, i agree... excel is better at such things...IMHOThanks for all the responses I will try your suggestions when I get back to the office.

Solve : Network Connection Cycling Off-On?

Answer»

I have been having the strangest problem with my laptop's network connection. Whether I am hard lined or connecting through wifi, it constantly loses and then regains connection. The problem OCCURS at work by hard wire and wifi all the time and has happened at two hotels on the road through only wifi. Strangely, it will sometimes STOP doing it when I am at home connecting by wifi to my own home network. When that happens, the computer seems to STABILIZE while at home and then when I TAKE it to work, it will be fine from anywhere between an hour to several DAYS. It eventually starts happening again, though. My laptop is a Toshiba A45-S121. Its ethernet port is on-board. The wifi card is a netgear WG511. At home, my access point is a 2Wire Homeportal. At work the access point is a Linksys BEFW11S4. I am not sure what was at the hotels. ANY THOUGHTS?

Solve : Adobe Acrobat Reader?

Answer»

Are you using Adobe Acrobat reader to read your PDF documents?

Well, you might have noticed that going down through the pdf documents while moving to the next
page can be an irritating task, because the movement seems to HOLD on and just don't move as easily as it should.

What if the pdf document is large enough, says 50 pages? It gets more irritating.

Well here is an alternative to adobe acrobat reader, and it is Foxit Reader.

You can download the free version from here

and when you open any pdf document through foxit reader, it seems like you are going down in an ms word document -- very easy.

Much smoother. Thanks, I got some 100-page MANUALS on my Desktop. Thanks.

One thing I forgot to add here.

There is another benfit of using Foxit Reader.

When you open PDF multiple pdf documents with Adobe Acrobat, the next document overwrite the previous document.

But while you use foxit reader as your default pdf reader, every separate PDF documents will open in a new window,Fed has promoting Foxit for about a year. Where were you guys?Under Rock #22643735827. Is Fed a marketer? Then I should take some advice from him. Before Foxit I refused to click on links that were PDF.
Notice how much FASTER Foxit loads up?
Notice how Foxit doesn't try and take over your COMPUTER like a virus.
Notice how when you use Adobe then close it... it doesn't unload.
Adobe is my pet hate, along with Realplayer, Quicktime and Norton.Quote

Enough explosive hints already got here.

It will take some time to digest that.

Not true. It just OPENS in the same Adobe Reader (Reader, not Acrobat, right?) window; the first PDF opened is still open. Just click on Window on the Reader toolbar and you'll see all open PDF files. I've got Adobe Reader running now with 4 PDF documents open.

As for the main point of this discussion, the speed of Adobe Reader (Reader, not Acrobat, right?), anyone still using version 6.0 should upgrade to 7.01. It's much more responsive than 6.0. Version 7.0 is not compatible with Win 9x. Quote

Means what? Are Adobe reader and adobe acrobat reader different?

Ok. Some clarification.... It actually overwrites the previous pdf document.
The previous PDF document still stays opened.

If you have a no. of pdf documents opened in the same adobe reader window
you can always shift between the by pressing Ctrl + Tab.

What does that number signifY??

Adobe Acrobat is Adobe's PDF creation software and is not free. Adobe Reader is the free software that anyone download to view PDF documents. Although at one time the reader was called Adobe Acrobat Reader, the naming was changed, if I recall correctly, at least two versions prior to the most current version, which is version 7.0.8, I believe. So I was trying to clarify whether you have Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader. Again, they are not the same thing.

You are quite right about moving from one window to another with Ctrl + Tab.Quote

Solve : Gaming Computers?

Alright, I'm saving up monies for a new gaming computer, and i need some advice. I built one at newegg.com, and i built one at vigorgaming.com. at newegg, i set up an asus a8n32 sli deluxe socket 939 nforce spp 100 atx motherboard with an amd 64 fx-60 2.6ghz dual core processor, an xfx geforce 8800 gtx 768mb gddr3 video card, an asus cd drive and dvd drive, an 80 gig seagate sata hard drive, coolmax 850 watt atx power supply, 2 corsair 512mb pc3200 ram sticks, vigor monsoon 2 thermal electric cpu cooler, and 2 thermaltake 120 mm case fans. this adds up to about $2,460.

vigorgaming.com:

amd 64 x2 am2 5000+ @ 2.6ghz, vigor monsoon 2 cpu cooler, 600 watt power supply, asus m2n sli deluxe nforce 570 motherboard, 1gb of corsair memory, a 36 gig raptor hard drive and an 80 gig sata hard drive, dual geforce 8800 gtx video cards, and windows 64 bit pro. the rest of the options i left standard for the hornet l2 model (besides the paladin case w/ the lcd control center, which was also the case choice for the newegg setup). this adds up to about $2,824.

so which computer is best for the price as well as for gaming? and if anyone has any recommendations, please let me know.

Most of those arent that good.. Ill tell u what u should buy instead.

CPU - E6600 2.4Ghz for 300$
Motherboard - nVidia nForce 690i SLI for 300$
Graphics card(s) - 8800 GTS/GTX for 500-600$ and then another one at a later time.
PSU - 700-850w NAME brand PSU for around 100$
RAM - Kingston/Corsair PC2-5300 DDR2-667 2GB dual-channel (2x1GB) for 150$
HDD - Western Digital S.ATA 250GB 16MB cache for 75$
Optical Drives - 2x LG HL10 DVD Burner w/LightScribe for 80$
Coolers - 2x XXXmm fans (depending on case), VF900 for GPU, CNPS9700 for CPU.

Simple Explanation:
CPU: The Core 2 Duo series gives u far better gaming performance than the ATHLON 64-FX/64 X2, and are much less expensive. If u buy the E6300 for 150$ is already better than the Athlon FX-60 wich costs over 700$, and u can overclock even the E6300 to 3.0Ghz, making it as fast as the X6800, the most powerfull CPU on earth. The E6400 for 225$ can overclock to 3.2Ghz and the E6600 can overclock past 3.4Ghz and has 4MB of cache, while the E6400 and E6300 only have 2MB. This dosent make it a whole lot better, so if u want, just pick either of the lower Core 2 Duos. *With the Zalman CNPS9700 u can overclock the E6300 even to 3.0Ghz, wich is a 1140Mhz overclock! Not to mention every Mhz means more for the Core 2 Duo, because its a lot better.

Motherboard: If u want SLi, there is nothing better than the just released nForce 690 SLi, and if u can afford an 8800 GTX this should be perfect for u.

Graphics card: The 8800 GTS/GTX have near the same performance and are the best cards on earth. If u dont want something THAT expensive, u can also buy the 7900 GTO 512MB for 250$, wich is the best card on earth aside from the 8800s and for the lowest price EVER for a high-end card.

PSU: For 8800 GTX SLi u will need at least 650w, but u might aswell buy 700w+ to be on the safe side, and for future upgrades.

RAM: DDR2-667 will let u overclock ur CPU to the extent u wish. Not too little like the DDR2-533 or too much (leaving a problem) with the DDR2-800. If u want to know more abt this, say so because i can make this even more clear.

HDD: Western Digital are the Kingston of HDDs. They give u the BEST HDD for a lower cost because ur not paying for the brand name aswell as the actuall hardware. 250GB is the best value today - the price of every GB is the lowest there is. After 250GB the price of each GB actually gets higher, so if u want more than 250GB, just get 2 HDDs. Getting less than 160GB today isnt a good idea, because the price of every GB is very high and u save only 20$ on 90GB wich u will not be able to do without very soon.

Optical Drives: Today u should only buy DVD drives, because they can read/burn CDs aswell. DVD Burners have COME a very long way and they all have every FEATURE possible (dual layer etc.) and cost very little. LightScribe is a technology that lets u use the Burner's laser to print on the other side of the disk and is very cool and usefull and dosent cost extra. Buy 2 of these because its always good to have 2 Optical Drives, for Copying and such.

Cooler: ACCORDING to ur case, buy the most expensive case fans possible (most expensive is like 5$ and u need this, because u want it to be as quite as possible). For the CPU there are many cooler, but the Zalman CNPS9700 is currently the best AIR cooling possible, as it was just recently released. If u want better cooling, such as watercooling there arent many types but they are far most expensive for little extra gain. The Zalman (best company for coolers) VF900 is the best GPU cooler there is. It fits all current cards, and probably the 8800 series aswell.

Ive just recently helped someone build a PC similar to this. If u have any furthur questions, reply here or send me a messege on MSN Messenger.

Solve : Device manager - 2 many Monitors shown?

Answer»

I would appreciate help. I have a sony laptop and on the device manager under monitors, I have 3 of the same monitors listed: Is that okay or should I delete 2 of them?I have a similar situation. My desktop PC shows 4 monitors in Device Manager. I actually have two monitors attached to my computer. I've tried unstalling monitors via Device Manager and they simply reappear upon restarting my computer.

I think they are like generic drivers for different types of monitors, every Windows PC I've EVER used has at least 2, usually more
At the moment I have 5 - 3 default monitors, 1 generic TELEVISION, and 1 plug and play monitor, even though I only use ONE eternal monitor and my laptop screen
I don't think it's a problem thoughIf it wasn't a laptop i would suggest removing all of them and letting it just pick up the true one on re-boot....but remember you didn't hear it from me ...I also thought it might have something to do with the ATi Catalyst drivers, as they show SEVERAL different monitors with settings for each
I also uninstalled the monitors (might've been a stupid idea, but no ill effects so far) and it REINSTALLED them all on the next reboot, so I just leave them alone nowQuote

I also uninstalled the monitors (might've been a stupid idea, but no ill effects so far) and it reinstalled them all on the next reboot, so I just leave them alone now
Same here. There seems to be no negative effects from the extra monitors shown in Device Manager.

As you are meaning to say "posting to blog",
it can be done in 2 ways.

Either post CONTENT to your own blog.
or
Post comment to another blog.

And in both cases, you need to have a blog ( i.e. your own URL to a blog).

to post content in your blog...create a blog (by registering to the blog service), then login and post your content to the blog.

If you want to post comment to another blog, click on comment link on that blog,
and then it will ask you to login to your own blog member area so that it can
track from which blog you are posting that comment.

So you see, you need to have your own blog in both cases.

Below are the two links where you can crete your own free blogs:-

Solve : Xbox help??

Not sure if this is allowed but I'm taking my chances.

So my Xbox will turn on and all, but it won't load and the disc tray won't open. I press it and you hear it making a sound like it will open but it never does. And then it never loads on the screen, nothing happens, it just stays on but nothing loads. I tried on other tv's and wit other cables and still the same problem. No irregular flashing of the green light.

Anyone KNOW what happened?

Edit: Actually, the green light does flash continually.Anything is allowed in the "Other" forum - welcome...

I don't own an XBox but Google came up with this.

Good luckThanks..

Didn't really help much though, as it just tells me to go get it repaired by Microsoft, not the reason or how I can fix it myseld Well, I can FIND lotsa info on XBox error codes but most refer to patterns of a red and green flashing led or to red and orange or just red, haven't found a reason or cure for just a green flashing led.

You could try asking for help on one of the many XBox dedicated forums like this one.

Sorry, can't be more help to you.

Good luckQuote

not the reason or how I can fix it myseld

To me, it just sounds broken, plain and simple, and you need to take it back for repairs, plain and simple. Neil, I would like to know WHY and HOW it broke. Nothing happened to it out of the ordinary. I played it one night, turned it off as always, put it away, then tried to use it the next day and it's had the same error ever since. I want to know what the heck happened.

Quatroking - But even if it were stuck, why would that prevent the game from loading or the start-up screen to load? Nothing loads at all. Also, know where I can find instructions on how to open it? Can't find a way to do it.\

Dusty - Thanks, I'll ask there as well.sounds like the timing is off. have you ever forced the tray CLOSED?

also, what might have happened is that the cd that was inserted into the drive "popped up" on an angle and is now preventing you from opening the drive by acting like a wedge. this may also account for you not being able to read the the already inserted cd.

and also here are a couple questions...

1. do you mean xbox or xbox 360?
2. and how FAR does the xbox load? (does it get past the green gob loading screen?)

Homer - I meant the Xbox, the older one.

And as I said, NOTHING loads, not even the green screen. After several minutes of clicking both buttons randomly thousands of times finally it loads nad I can play the game inside, but after I turn it off again, same thing happens.hmmm something might be fryed then, try opening the xbox up and LOOKING around for burnt parts. and while your at it, you can disassemble the cd drive and see what wrong with it too.

Solve : Boots in safe mode only...?

Answer»

Hi; Just picked up an IBM thinkpad (760ED), with windows 98. It will only boot in safe mode. If I try normal start up it will go to a dos screen and freeze. I have proper windows 98SE ,and windows 98 upgrade discs, but the unit will not run them. Any ideas on what I need to get it up and running .?.

Thanks sam311Do you have a floppy and a CDROM drive? Is the machine set to boot fromCD ROM first? What happens when you INSTALL a "proper" disk? What is the history of this machine? Details are needed as to what we are working with.HI; As to the history, as far as I know it was used in a business, and was leased. There is a cd drive, but no floppy. ( I do have an external floppy drive.) When a disc is put in the drive the indicator light flashes and the drive starts, after a few seconds the drive stops. I've TRIED starting the unit with the disc in, but had no luck. When in safe mode I am able to open and run the programs that are on it, (a few games, word, ETC.) The clock and date are functioning properly. It is safe mode, as the words appear in the four corners. This machine is too old to support booting from an external floppy drive...as GX1_Man said set the machine to boot to CD_Rom, insert your Win98SE CD and it should start the setup process...

patio. 8-)F1 at boot should get you into the BIOS to make sure that CDROM is set to boot first. If you cannot get into the BIOS, then you have other MAJOR problems.

Here are the minimum system requirements for running the Windows® 2000 Professional operating system. (XP on steroids)

Minimum Requirements
Computer/Processor 133 MHz or higher Pentium-compatible CPU.

CPU Support Windows 2000 Professional supports single and dual CPU systems.

You will not be disappointed. *trust me* You should have a minimum of 128mb ram for better performance.I Agree...Win2K yes...XP marginal depending on all those other machine variables that were not listed.

Anyway, could that be your problem, too? Good luck! What type of monitor is it. CRT or LCD. Has this always happened, or just recently? How old is the monitor.

If it's CRT, try removing sources of mangetism, which can include speakers.Hook up the monitor to another known working machine...if the same symptoms occur your monitor is about to go South.
If another monitor on your machine does the same thing then your vid card is READY to go South...

patio. 8-)And CHECK your compass. You may be actually going south!

Solve : Server Not Found????

Answer»

We recently got SBC set up for our Internet. The Internet will be on for about ten minutes, then, it will declare that the SERVER cannot be found. If the computer is restarted, it will work for ten minutes and then shut off again. Messengers don't seem to be effected by this. We use Mozilla, but it will also do it in IE. Any ideas and/or solutions willbe appreciated.Have you contacted SBC? They deal with this kind of thing many times daily.SBC said that the modem should be FINE and that it is a problem with the computer...Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan

Problems with the Internet connection.

The error could be DUE to a download error or an installation error due to lack of hard disk space, PRIVILEGES etc.,..."

I tried restarting, but it gave me the same message.Quote

Solve : Sending a music e-mail attachment?

I have an 11 YEAR old Pentium (Windows 98SE, 128MB of memory) I keep as an extra computer. Even it benefited from the Tweaking steps recommended by dslreports. You're missing a key point in this discussion. Your processor speed has little to do with your Internet connection speed; the processor does not need to process DATA as it's being downloaded. The data is simply FLOWING through your Internet connection to your hard drive.

The tweaking I'm talking about does not involve making your computer's processor work faster. It involves changing a one or two settings that can affect your Internet connection speed. dslreports.com PROVIDES a free utility called DrTCP which can be downloaded and used to do the tweaking, if any, that they recommend. Based on my experience, slight gains were realized by running the Tweaks test, which did recommend certain tweaks, and making those changes, i.e. tweaks. Thanks for explaining. SOMETIMES my brain quits working. Especially lately as I haven't been feeling well. I'll have to give it a try tomorrow.Feel better and enjoy all you have learned.

Solve : Geocities Bandwidth Limit?

Answer» An important question:

Geocities site has a bandwidth limit of 4 mb/hour.

What does it mean?

If i have 2 accounts as :

[emailprotected]
and
[emailprotected]

Can I download 4mb from each account

or

Am I to download a total of 4 mb from both accounts?

ThanksUnless they specifically say that limit is per email account, I think it surely means for all activity by the user.

By the way, is this the free GeoCities account? Where is the 4mb/hour limit stated? I don't see it at http://geocities.yahoo.com/ps/learn2/WhatYouGet4_Free.htmlHi

Are you sure it is for all of my accounts?

I need to be specific of that because i have some files in several accounts
which i send to others.

Yea am talking of FREE accounts.

Here ARE the links:

1

2

3
In your original post, you mentioned two email accounts and said nothing about having a website. Yet, the links you provided in your last post all refer to bandwidth limitation in connection with a website. So, exactly what GeoCities services are you using? What is a bandwidth?
The total amount of data you can transfer in a designated amount of time.

Could I have two?
Yes. Sign up two accounts, and then make two different GeoCities sites. I think this MIGHT be against the rules, so be careful!

Other than that, get hosting from this place:

Hi

I have not indicating about any website.

I am indicating about files.

Say your site contains 5 pages each of 100 KB.

then total size of your site is 500 KB or 0.5 MB

Now you can also upload files (like zip files, pdf files, html files etc) to your geocities site.

(Note that HTML files are actually web pages)
those files will have certain size)

This is how I upload file to a geocities site:

I first login to my yahoo account from http://mail.yahoo.com

After entering my yahoo mail account, I type in address bar

http://geocities.yahoo.com/filemanager

Here i fill up the form ( you have to fill up the form when you are enterinf first time), then I submit the form.

After that, i again type in address bar

http://geocities.yahoo.com/filemanager

there i click "upload files"

Thus you can upload files (zip, pdf, html etc) from your computer.

Now when you download those files (or tell others to downoad them), you have to limit the download size to 4000 KB / Hour (for FREE account).

Means you can not download more than a total of 4000 KB from a geocities free account per hour.

So what i am asking if i have 2 accounts (yahoo mail accounts) can i
download 3500 KB from one account, and also 3500 KB from the other account
in the SAME hour ??

{Note that if you have 2 accounts as
[emailprotected] and [emailprotected]
and if you upload a jpg file named picture.jpg to both account
then download link for the file in
[emailprotected] would be

http://www.geocities.com/aa/picture.jpg

and in [emailprotected] it would be

http://www.geocities.com/bb/picture.jpg}

That link is not working.

That link works for me...shouvik, I suggest you visit Yahoo's website and search for detailed information about your benefits. My ISP is Earthlink. http://www.earthlink.net/membercenter/benefits/ tells me I can create up to 8 email accounts and that I have up to 10MB of free webspace for each email address. Note that my Earthlink account is not free.

If you can't find this kind of info on Yahoo's website, see whether they provide support via phone, email, or online chat. Since it's a free account, the only support MAY be what is published on the web. The key issue here, it SEEMS to me, is what CONSTITUTES an "account". Even if I created 8 email accounts with my Earthlink account, it's still part of my Earthlink account; I would not have 8 Earthlink accounts, just 8 email accounts within my Earthlink account.

So, again, does Yahoo recognize the two accounts you mentioned as part of one main account, or as two entirely separate user accounts? And, is the bandwidth limitation based on email accounts or, if the two accounts are part of the same main account, is it based on the main account?

I really can't answer these questions, since I'm not a Yahoo user.Geocities was a nice free host to start a long time ago. You may notice thoes annoying adverts and Yes, bandwidth limits that is not longer the todays standard BW trasfer where we use massive MB's for picture files alone. Consider getting a cheap hosting service or some other free host that's more usable in todays standard.

Solve : Too many things to consider when buying...?

Answer»

I'm planning to buy a new computer near the end of December and there are just so many things I have to consider when I buy, especially what brand and what model. My price cap is at about $800-900 and I'll need this computer to just do some basic word PROCESSING, listen to some music, and play a few medium to high-end games. (All I know is that I'll need something to play Medal of Honour: Allied Assault, Battlefield: 1942 meeting both the recommended system requirements and possibly something like The Eldar Scrolls 4: Oblivion in the future. I'll want to be able to play all of these games pretty smoothly.) So I'm gonna need some help here on picking something in each field and with a little bit of information:

CPU: Using mainly the games as a guide, I'll need something that matches a 3Ghz Pentium 4 (or maybe even slightly better). Dual-Core would definately be good SINCE that would let me run a few more programs and also increase XPs performance. Intel's HT also seems pretty attractive, but I know little about AMD's processors so I don't know what makes them so good. (Semprons, Athlons and all of those names with the numbers behind them [Ex. Sempron 3200 or something like that] confuse me.] If anyone could tell me about one that's pretty nice, that'd be great.

RAM: DDR, SD, Dual-Channel, oh my! I'm pretty lost right now as to what sort of things I should be looking for in RAM. 1-2GBs seems to be a good amount of RAM though.

Motherboard: This is one of the areas where I'm most unsure of. I really don't know what I should be looking for in a motherboard. All the blabber about compatibility for Intel and AMD CPUs I'm pretty sure I'll be able to figure out (like the sockets that I would need), but when it comes to actually looking for certain things that make a motherboard worth its money, I just haven't GOT a clue. A little guideline or checklist with the things I should be considering in a motherboard (along with what they all do) would be appreciated

Video Card: Most definately the area where I need the most help with, I'm having trouble deciding what card I want and need. I'm looking for basically the best valued card out there, and from what I've heard so far from friends, other forums, and from other places, the ATI Radeon x1600 or the nVidia 7600GT are pretty decent for the money they cost. Will need at least 128MB of on-board, preferrably 256.

Hard Drive: RPM and SATAII, what matters more? Just need maybe about 80Gb or the NEXT step up.

O/S: I'm almost completely bent on getting Windows XP Professional as I don't want Home and Vista will probably put a bigger hole in my wallet. But if anyone thinks otherwise, speak out.

DVD/CD Drive: What's a good write speed and is a DVD±R Burner also able to read DVDs and CDs and burn CDs? I'll want my new computer to be able to burn and read DVDs as well as burn and read CDs so any suggestions on what I need to get if greatly appreciated.

Sound Card: I'm not too concerned with sound cards, but if anyone KNOWS about one that a good price and produces clear sound, let me know.

Cooling System: Heatsink or Liquid Cooling? That is the question. What should I get while staying within my budget?

Yes, meeting all of my demands while staying within my budget might be a bit of a tall order, but if you can offer any sort of help or suggestion, I'd be very grateful. [smiley=grin.gif]
The world will all be different by December. Things you may want now will have been replaced by better, or at least more expensive, one. Processor prices will continue to change. Just wait until you are closer to purchase time. The components you have described seem quite good for a computer today. Whether you'll get it that cheaply is another matter.

Like the others say, prices change all the time, so it's no good planning the specifics now. 80gb is about the lowest you should get for a harddrive. It would seem a pity to spend so much on a good computer, but tiny harddrive.

Intel v AMD... a constantly raging warzone. Sometimes Intel are on top sometimes AMD are. Personally I prefere AMD but each person has his own preference. Both are good processors. The AMD number is approximately its equivilent speed in megahertz compared to a Pentium. For example a Pentium 3Ghz is about the same speed as an Athlon 3000.If all you are using is Microsoft Word, it really does not matter which one you decide to buy. Quote

If all you are using is Microsoft Word, it really does not matter which one you decide to buy.

Or how many gigahertz, or how big the video card, of if you have a wireless keyboard, or how many gigabytes of RAM, etc.

I've got a P3-500 that smokes with 256 RAM on Word documents. I tried a faster machine, but it didn't affect my typing speed at all. It just heated up the room and made a lot of noise.

Well I'll just repost this again in December when I learn a bit more about each part (thanks unlovedwarrior)

And like I said in my first post, I'll need it to play some pretty demanding games like Oblivion, and not just word processing. Also, I'm not going to use Microsoft Word unless it comes with my computer for free. OpenOffice.org and freeware all the way!

But thanks to everyone for the suggestions. They've given me a some ideas on what to do...

Plus, I'll work on getting that $1000 [smiley=thumbsup.gif]
