I recently had bought some video games for my computer without knowing about video cards or what kind of graphics my computer will display. I went to my local electronics store and looked for a SIMPLE video card for my computer because mine had a video driver that would not display the video games I bought properly. I had no idea what to look for and what was compatible with my computer. Can somebody help me because I'm clueless?there are 2 main graphics card compaines at the moment, ATI and Nvidia. They both do ranges of cards for £50 to about £300. The mid range card you would probably want would be a ATI 9600. There are 3 versions of this card the standard (9600), PRO (9600 PRO) and XT (9600 XT). The performace of the XT and PRO is better than the standard but they are more expensive (about £100 for std and £150 for pro/xt).
The Nvidia equivilent is the FX 5700 (2 versions standard and Ultra) is fairly similar in terms of performance and price so it doesnt really matter which one you choose. If you want a cheap basic card the ATI 9200 and FX 5200 are only about £40 - £50 and can play pretty much any game you want but at not such high quality settings as with the higher end cards and it will not be as 'future proof' (i.e. you will have to get a new card in a year or so to keep up).

Sorry, i just read the TITLE of your post again. As long as you have an AGP slot in your board it should be compatible with any modern graphics card.

ADDED AGAIN: Just rembered somthing else. If you PC is OLDER than 1998 - 99 then you may have the old syle of AGP, this runs at a higher voltage and can kill a new GFX card. Check the motherboard manual (if you have one) that its running at 1.5v not 3.3v.I have a Sony desktop I bought in about '01-'02, would a nvidia fx 5200 work with my computer? what is the system that connects the periphials to a computer possibly across the country.with a high speed connection, uses a small box connected to a static ip that CONNECT the MONITOR, KEYBOARD & mouse to a REMOTE computer? the desktop & programs comes from that location.

My computer is about 5 years OLD , recently the thing locked up in the middle of email , shut it down and it never came back . This clicking noise is almost definitely caused by something such as the read/write head within the hard disk drive and something that will not be fixed by replacing the interface board.

I GET this message when attempting map a DRIVE using the NET USE command. What's the resolution?

My computer locked up when I was installing a program. The program does not WORK. When I try to USE the add/delete it will not delete it because it isn't fully loaded. When I try to re-install, it says that the program already exists. How do I get rid of this partially loaded program?you could just go into 'c:/program files/name of company who makes the software/name of program' and delete the entire folder.
e.g. you might go to
C:\Program Files\Adobe
then inside abobe there would be a folder called acrobat READER, and you would delete this. (DONT delete acrobat, its just an example)

if it just started running slow, you probably would want a quick, easy RAM upgrade.

You seem to have used a good amount of your HD, so maybe try defragmenting it first.
Maybe you just have a FUN little file system that resembles my computer desk... very messsssy.

And if all else fails, just take some Nyquil.
It should get you through slow times...

Heres the deal , if you use the internet a fair amount your system, may be full of ( spyware and or adware )
automatic stuff that over time will clog up the works , get a free download online that REMOVES this junk,
( www.spybot.com) is a good one.. Then get a good firewall , like NORTON

You can try more RAM , too

And back up regularly, I just lost my HD

Good luckedoeler makes some good points....... I wouldn't bother defraghmenting the disk because the system does that by itself as you use it ever since Windows 95. If you're using Windows XP I'd recommend running MSCONFIG from the RUN on the Start menu and remove the startup programs. Try using Spybot and/or Ad-Aware to scan for adware/spyware and take that junk out, both are free programs to use non commecially.

I have an XP box with a local printer in LPT1. I want the parallel port to use the generic port driver but after every reboot XP changes the driver to ECP. I've tried different settings in the BIOS (EPP, PS2, OFF), have turned off System RESTORE and unchecked the Enable Legacy Plug and Play Detection checkbox in the ECP Printer Port Properties. Any ideas?<>
It seems the port IS remaining generic after all. So.. the system is not changing the port back to ECP after each boot but, I still have to update the driver from standard to standard before it will print properly. If I don't do this, the printer (a ZEBRA label printer) will print but random information will be missing on most LABELS.

When I LEAVE my cursor on a ICON just a SHORT TIME that icon will activate without my clicking the mouse. How do I stop this. Thanks

I RECENTLY UPGRADED from Windows ME to XP home edition. after the upgrade, one of the drives ( the one with all of my music on it) does not show up. It is no where to be found in XP however, when I turn on the computer, the option to start ME is there. If I GO to ME, the third drive shows up though NONE of the music is on it. any ideas about what happened and what can i do about it? I fairly new to this computer stuff so talk slowly.

Every so often this messegae pops up, ''the remote procedure call has terminated unexpectedly and the system MUST shutdown". Then it gives me a minute to save my work. Also in my task manager, the CPU usage is at 100% EVEN when I'm not running anything, what is going on?? Can someone help me? Are you USING XP? if so it sounds very much LIKE the blaster virus. Does it only happen when you are connected to the internet?
If it does then get the patch from the Microsoft website.
I am not sure about your CPU usage problem.

When I TRY to save a mail message as an "Outlook Template" (*.oft) the option is not available. How do I install this option in Outlook 2000 SR-1 or is it even available. I can't seem to find it in the Control Panel where you change the programs.Microsoft Outlook should detect the TEMPLATES are not installed and install them for you. If this is not occurring you can install Microsoft Office templates by following the below steps.

1. Place the Microsoft Office 2000 CD in the computer.
2. Open Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel.
3. In Add/Remove programs click the change button for "Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Standard"
4. Click the + next to Microsoft word for windows, and make SURE each of the WIZARD and Templates are installed.

When I push the button to start my PC, I hear a SOUND from the PC. Sounds like the cooling fan is hitting something. I then open the casing and checked but all the cooling fans are not touching anything. I also realise the sound seems to be coming from the hard disk. Then, the booting system said "PRIMARY HARD DISK FAILURE". What does this mean and will I be able to recover my data or to save my hard disk?? Please help!!!Sounds like your hard drive is dead (or to GIVE it its technical term, its fubar ). I would not think you would be able to recover any data from it, especially if it is making CLICKING noises because this probably MEANS the inside is doing somthing STUPID and probably making big scratches on the platters or somthing .
If the data was very important there are companies that can recover data from dead hard drives but its usually rather expensive.

I'm trying to run a .bat file that will open two programs (used frequently) and then CLOSE out the MS-DOS command window. I can't get both programs to run at once (the only WAY the file works is if I close out the first program, then the second program runs, and when the second program is run the command window closes). Any HELP would be great as I've not done that MUCH .bat work.

I have a PIII gateway. I was having TROUBLE and it told me to reinstall WindowsXP. So I did and now it will not leave safe mode and it will not install XP. I can not GET any further with anything on the computer except where it say can not install under safe mode. So I tried to just wipe the hard drive and start all over, it will not let me do anything now.. I can not delete from the hard drive in DOS mode, but when I do a DIR it shows everything is still on the hard drive. Wondering if I had a bad hard drive or mother BOARD or if I am way off and need to try something ELSE.. please help....Have you changed the bios to boot off the cd? Is your XP an upgrade or full version.First you will need to boot from the CD rom if your bios allows this. This will allow you to use the XP recovery options. You can do one of three things, have XP try to fix your problems or go in to the recovery console and try to fix your problems with a limited set of dos commands if you know exactly what the problem is. Lastly and probably what you want to do is the option to do a fresh install of XP.

So get that cd rom booted and life should be much better.

hello! we have a presario from 1999. lately we cannot defrag, it stops at 10% and it needs to turned on and rebooted or scan DISK stop 3.4 of the way in.

Help?Have you tried defrag in safe mode.Most programs and drivers are not LOADED so they dont write to disk and interfear with defrag.GIVE safemode a try.Thank you for the prompt reply. I have tried going through system tools as WELL as dos. No luck, darn thing just freezes.

When you say "safe mode", what is it?


CheeseboyWell in safe mode only the minimal amount of drivers are started so you have less chance of a program writing to your drive and interfearing with defrag or even scandisk.
The way to get to safemode is
press F8 while booting.Then you will get several boot options.Pick safemode.You'll be warned your entering safemode.yes is ok.Once in,scandisk and defrag.Most of the time the reason defrag and scandisk keeps restarting is some program is on and writing to disk.
Everytime the info on drive changes Defrag and scandisk restarts.You need to find out what is doing this.
Sometimes its spyware programs or even antivirus programs and utilities will do this.So doing the safemode method is only a temporary salution.You can shut some programs down by control/alt/delete until you find which program is writing to disk.I find that most of the time its spyware running secretly and adaware usually takes care of that.

I have TEN autoexec's and eight config's on C:
They are all different and have programs and drives I no longer have
installed.Like FONIX\ISPEAK or IOMEGA zip drive,Pioneer cdrom or
win95.Computer was win95 but upgraded using Win98se upgrade.This packard
bell has a hidden restore partition.I have neither master or restore
disks.Even so Everything seems to work well except I am trying to install
MATSHITA CD-ROM CR-581-J. dos drivers.
And need to put commands into autoexec and config for cdrom.Right now I have
unchecked both in msconfig. Computer freezes when I turn config and autoexec
on.I am lost on what to put in config.sys and autoexec.bat
for this system or cdrom.

Of course, a substantial number of them were installed as part of the original system configuration, such as VARIOUS HP programs (some of which I removed long ago but some STILL remain), Adobe Reader, JAVA, etc.

Desktop: I haven't checked yet.

I have a computer that has two USB ports and an IEEE port in the front of the case. My case is an ANTEC case. The motherboard is an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe Motherboard. When my brother's best friend built the computer for me, he mentioned that the front ports where not connected.

How can I connect them? Is the problem that the motherboard doesn't have the proper connections? Or do I NEED to get some cables that will connect them.

I have all the USB ports in the back full and would LIKE to connect my new digital camera to the front for EASE. There are 4 USB ports in the back.

coachodeepsYou need to connect the USB wires to the motherboard. If you look inside the case there should be wires leading from the ports.
Depending on where you got your computer from the mother board should have documentation. IN this documentation there should be a MAP of your board. On this map there should be a diagram showing you where to hook your USB port wires to the motherboard.

This may be a STUPID q, but is there a limit on how big of a hard DRIVE one can install? My packard bell is old, and will only support 256mb ram and only has a 4.3gb Fujitsu( I think) hard drive. Any help would be appreciated.Depending on how old you system is and what you want to do with it , there really isnt anything you have to worry about. You really shouldnt need anything BIGGER than an 80 gig HD(which you could install with no problem), unless you are downloading a ton of music or playing a lot of games. If thats what you want to do you are better off buying a NEW system, or a better system.

The /p should pause it and keep it from running off the screen

I hate to say that I do. I have used FF before and didnt like it, also my one friends sister slaped it on her machine and she had all sorts of issues.

Please suggest me what to do?Connections, connections,.....make sure all of your connections are secure.....is the inside of your case, fan and heat sink free of dust.....RESEAT you ram, then consider swapping the PS for a known good unit....to eliminate the PS as a source of problems..... Post any error messages......DC power fluctuations can make the shutdowns intermittant.

Does anyone know whether IRQ conflicts still happen with PCI devices? I know it was pretty common in the days of the ISA slots. A friend of mine has a MODEM and a sound card (both pci) that do not want to work together. When ONE or the other is installed it works fine, but when both are in the sound works but not the modem. He is running windows 98SE. Device manager shows both devices are working properly.From what I understand PCI slots share IRQS. On many motherboards there is one SLOT that is not shared. Check the manual for the motherboard, they will sometimes make recomendations as to what slot to use for different CARDS. If you don't have a manual just try moving the cards around and you may find a combination that will work.

They never PLANNED an upgrade path and anyone who is trying to hack it to death is doing an awful lot of work for nothing.

when using a new cd I recieved, I had an error message of corrupted disk or not formated to run on windows...Whats the deal has happeded before, others have had same problem....Is the CD burned by someone you know or is it store bought. When I BURN a cd on my XP box I have to finalize the session or some pcs (usually 98 BOXES) can't read it. CHECK the CD for dirt/scratches as well.

Whenever i want to use the scanner component on my HP PSC 1410 scanner I get a message to search for and install scan.msi from my original disc. Unfortunately the original DISK is bad. How do I get this file?Try uninstalling all the HP stuff connected to that printer, and DOWNLOAD the drivers from the site.

I did download and install this file earlier after uninstalling the hp driver. But it still did not work. I was EVEN ASKED during the installation to get the scan.msi file from an unknown destination.How do I get the standalone "scan.msi" file for HP PSC 1410 All-in-One printer?

having recently formatted my hard drive, i REINSTALLED all my software incl. windows 2000 pro. now the computer has a wireless network connection to the main computer in the house, as we share the broadband connection. Instead of setting ONE user to the computer, i must've put - administrator & me. However anytime i login either as me or the administrator, i cannot access the control panel, nor anything i download - the only message i get is "access is DENIED". pls help - i have no idea what is going on.Sounds to me LIKE you've restricted both users. Unless you can get to a user with admin rights you're cooked, SORRY. Might have to re-install again.

I'm so COMPUTER illeterate I don't even know under which topic my question should fall so I just piced this "other" topic area. Perhaps someone can tell me what area it should fall under. At any rate, the other day on my desktop computer, I use Windows XP, I noticed that my e-mail incoming, sent, etc. had lost its normal appearance. I no LONGER had the boxes on the left to check/select specific e-mails, the font size on the e-mail incoming, sent, etc. had reduced in size, no more ability to flag or star, and in the menu I no longer have a "Reload" or "Refresh" option. Also some of the other commands one would normally have have disappeared. Not only on my e-mail, but also on my individual account in Craigslist, for those of you familiar with Craigslist, you have certain colors ASSOCIATED with your ADS, one color showing ads you have currently, another color showing those you have closed, etc. Well, even on Craigslist, the colors have all gone away. I had a person look at this problem and he thought deinstalling and reinstalling Norton might fix the problem but it did not. I also should mention that my laptop, which I have in the same area, does not have any of these same problems----it is only my desktop that is manifesting these problems. Does anyone have any thoughts on what the problem might be? This may sound like dumb question but my brother has a cardfile file that he wants from his old windows 3.1 and I found a program (AZZ cardfile) that can open it in any environment. But what I'm concerned with is that am I going to be abale to open this file with XP or any other OS? had anybody ever tried this before? I will format the hard drive of the new COMPUTER with FAT32 format, but is there anything that I need to do to make sure that the old hard drive (windows 3.1 hard drive) is accessible after I INSTALL XP? is there any program that may help?

KianooshYou should be able to slave the old drive and READ the files fine.

When I delete my history in IE, it does not CLEAR everything, how come? And is there a way I can delete EVERYTHING?In internet explorer go to..
tools > Internet options
then CLICK 'delete FILES', 'clear history', and if you have been on some particularly dodgey sites you MAY want to delete you cookies as well, but if you do this all of your auto logins ect will be deleted also. In addition to what MetalMilitia mentioned could you post the names of some of the files that are not being deleted?I use popupstopper to force history to clean after each TIME IE is closed. okay we have an hp connected to my MOTHERS and I got around to installing some of the things she had on her pc orginally. Thing is that I can run the install and stuff but the printer icon doesnt show up in the controll panel in the printer dir. Windows 2k, Dell DIMENSION 4100. Never had an issue till know.It will after you install the Drivers for it

Hi everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I did change my computer motherboard and reinstall windows XP SP3 on a NEW HDD, it work almost well for a short period of time, but since a while it making me crazy again and I do not know why !!

At any time windows freeze for a while and work again whitout any intervention from me I only have to wait a bit (5 to 15 seconds), but now it is getting worst in this way It is the whole computer who freeze for a while and a loud BUZZING sound is produce by the computer and for a while too (3 to 10 seconds) after some time it work ok for a while and it do the same or some time it froze for good, I thank that it was Windows related so I reinstalled it and TRY to make it work under SP1 but it do it anyway.

Sometimes I can access the task MANAGER and stop any program running and work or play for a while but the problem stay there, sometimes I cannot stop any program from the task manager I cannot even stop processus from there.

I still think it is partly a Windows issue but...

I have a Toshiba Satellite, M115 model laptop. The screen minimizes itself intermittently and will also close itself and open another TAB on its own. Hello, I recently backed up my whole c: drive onto another partion on my hard drive and reinstalled XP home. After RUNNING the backup utility to restore my backup I am unable to access any files that belonged to my administrative user login. (i.e. my documents etc.)

All of the program files went to the right spots, and I can SEE "Owner" in Documents and Settings, but It says access is denied.

Any Help would Be Greatly Appreciated.

Yesh, hi. My monitor goes blank everytime, after about 5 mintues, when I play a game, single or multi-player. I have a brand new FLAT screen IBM thinkvision.Having not owned a TFT monitor i am not sure if this will do anything but... Have you tried PUTTING 'Vertical sync' on in the nvidia/ATI control panel? This will make it so the FPS does not exceed the monitors refresh rate and can fix similar problems with CRTs .Well, it already had a vertical snyc on it. Any ideas now? I purchased a refurbished computer for X-mas. Recently it had been freezing up about every 5 minutes, I have internal and external virus protection, spyware etc. My "other" tried doing disk defrag, virus scans, but they froze up. I tried to use a restore point, but all the restore points were gone even though we set them up.

Last attempt to run virus scan froze, so my "other" just shut down the computer (we use window vista). When I started it up it indicated recent software/hardward changes (he unplugged the external USB when the computer was off, thought that was the problem) so I started NORMALLY and the blue screen came up and said the computer was shut down to protect. I restarted again and I then got this message " disk boot error" please install disk and restart (we did not get disk with the computer, so not an OPTION). I restarted again and got the option to start normal or GO through repair/fix, I started under repair/fix to see if this would help, I then go the following message "Windows is having trouble communicating with a devise connected to your computer. This can sometimes occurr by unplugging a removable storage devise such as USB drive while in use or by faulty hardwar such as a dard drive or CD-ROM drive that is failing." The error code said: An unexpected I/O error has occurred. ***So bring us to the present, now when we turn the computer on it says "BootMngr is missing, press ctrl ALT delete".

We are dead in the water. My question is, could this be a bad hard drive or CD-ROM, it was a referb and we have a WARRENTY.. or is this a sign of a possible virus, it does not seem that way, but you never know? We plugged back in the USB external storage, but that did not work and now we just have a missing boot manager... help if any one know what direction to go: O, I can get into boot menu and set up, but it does not take f8 for safe mode and I can not get into recovery f11??Sounds like a failing hard drive to me.

My mother is using windows 98 and ie 6. Explorer will not open PICTURES at websites. After talking to a TECH, we discovered that if we set the encoding to western european (windows), it works fine. The problem is that it resets itself to western european (iso) when you open another page, and it will not open pictures at that setting. Very frustrating. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.If you go to Tools-> Internet Options-> ADVANCED then down in the Multimedia section you should have Show Images checked. I'm using (ISO) and have had no issues.

Wow, my computer SEEMS to be full of problems!

Well, now i can't shut down.
I can click shutdown, but the computer will just restart.
Also, i have my computer initiate shut down if i press the botton on the front of my computer, but that just does the whole restart thing.

I'll then GET a BIOS error message, and it'll take me to my BIOS screen and reset my processor to [AUTO] and i hate that because i have to readjust it each time because i overclock my processor.

Is there a way to fix my computer WITHOUT having to hold down the front button for 5 seconds to get it to turn off?

I'm on Win98 with an unknown MOTHERBOARD (sorry!) and Phoenix BIOS

when i put it on "cable slelect" then shut down, then put it back to SLAVE, it SHOWS, :D but once i reboot, :o My D drive is missing again... &GT;:( How do i fix this! ???Why cant you leave it on slave if it shows?Its all about the jumpers, man.
You've probably got the jumpers on the drive incorrect.
Go to the manufacturer's website (of the HD) and they should have the jumper settings u need.
