Solve : Interesting Wardriving Find - Without Network Intrusion? |
Answer» So we own a GPS, but my wife didnt want to use my GPS, she wanted to go on a 160 mile round trip to know how to get to a place that a concert is happening at next month, and I had to RIDE shotgun and tell her which roads to take. Took my netbook with me with only 50% battery life left in it, but 50% left = about 4 or 5 hrs left of LIGHT use. |

Solve : Java developer wrote office suite in 30 days? |
Answer» A freelance Java developer CLAIMS it took him only 30 days to build and launch a basic open source office suite that runs on multiple OSes. Called Joeffice, it works on WINDOWS, Mac OS X and Linux as well as in browsers, according to the developer. It would not be very hard to set a rather low goal for what constitutes an "office suite," bash the basis of that out, and then call it an alpha. I can't try it, since I do not care to install Java on my system, but looking at the screen shots, it looks like he did precisely that. According to the source repo, initial commits started February 24th; latest commits were May 23rd. My calculations seem to indicate 3 months, not one. Taking what they have now, and them saying "this only took 30 days" is a straight-up lie, because it CLEARLY didn't. |

Solve : Purchasing ram from Crucial com in the USA? |
Answer» Don't know anyones' views on the subject about customs duty, but it would be nice if someone could answer if not by the board then by pm. it's basically fraud Yes. Why should you get help breaking French law? "l suppose it's basically fraud" --not necessarily so. For instance my experience (quite extensive) in purchasing on line from U.S. sources is the following. 1.If the article purchased has a certain value (i don't know what the upper limit is) it does not attract customs fees of any kind. Nor does it require being shipped through a "broker" (which again would RESULT in high fees --as they usually have a minimum flat fee to handle merchandise). This has also been the case with items purchased from the far east (IE Hong Kong). 2. When i am purchasing items that are of high value i have them shipped to a U.S. courier LOCATION (privately operated commercial entity that accepts shipments on your behalf). They email me when it arrives and i go and get it and declare it at the Canada customs and pay any fees that are required (usually only the HST).This eliminates the "broker" involvement. Usually there is no State of FEDERAL U.S. taxes applied if it originates outside the State where it is delivered -unless they operate a "bricks and mortar" retail store in that State. Therefore the HST becomes the sole tax on the purchase. 3. It may be that France has a situation that exists in Canada. If you are in the "other purchasing country" you can send yourself "gifts" up to a certain value -can't remember what that is as i have never done it. Or some one else can also send you "gifts" up to a certain value and not attract fees. Bottom line i do not know what your Customs laws are in your country or if your geographic proximity to an international border is an option to lessen your fee impact. I give you these observations in the hope that more investigation of your applicable laws will allow you to perhaps INVOLVE other options.truenorthWouldn't it be easier to use Crucial's scan to figure out what kind of memory you need, then just buy it locally? Is memory that much more expensive in France?Quote from: truenorth on November 22, 2010, 09:54:38 AM lessen your fee impact ... avoid paying the lawfully due taxes and import duties laid down by your government and thereby avoid taking your fair share of contributing to the costs of running your country? |

Solve : Worst New Computer Purchase Ever ( back in 2002 ) shows up today!? |
Answer» Found it kind of funny that the evil wimpy beast of a system ( HP Pavilion 742C) http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=bph07569&lang=en&cc=us&contentType=SupportFAQ&prodSeriesId=71006 would show its head once again, 11 years later! The mother was a little upset to hear the news. She was like I just spent $150 on games and your telling me this computer cant run them when the Gamestop clerk told me that these games would run on this computer. In addition to this her son already opened 2 of the titles which makes them non refundable.I've never understood this. Do they think if you lie it will somehow change reality? If you say "yep, it will definitely run them" will their belief that it will work magically make it work? Seriously this infuriates me. The true story might not always be the best story but at least it's relevant to reality! The clerk at GameStop probably just wasn't very knowledgable, or was more concerned with selling the games. my PC is a lot better than that one and I doubt I'd be able to get Crysis2 working amicably. On a side note: I actually tried to apply at a Game Store. (EB Games I think it was) a year or so ago, because it would have been better than the Job I had at the time. It was funny because I'm not much of a gamer and I assume that everybody that tries to work there is all up in the games with Call of Duty. If I had started there and somebody asked about "Call of Duty" I would have probably directed them to the bathroom... Quote I said I am sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I got bit by this same model computer in 2002 spending $519 on an open box purchase at Staples for a normally $699 computer thinking that I got a good deal until getting home and going to install my AGP videocard and there was no AGP Slot to install the videocard into. I told her that I ended up having to take a $220 loss to get rid of it by selling it to a co-worker and stating that it is lacking an AGP SLOT!As I noted above, in that situation, I would probably say "look, that's the truth. I can tell you something else. It might make you feel better, but it will not be consistent with reality. Do you want information consistent with reality, or information that makes you feel good temporarily until reality smashes it into a fine powder of disappointment?" Quote She then left with the computer not very impressed, but she knows that I am a specialist and so she finally got over the $150 rant about the games that the sales clerk at gamestop assisted her with and came back to the reality of the situation that the computer isnt powerful enough and was never really designed to be a gaming computer even when it was sold new in 2002.Love the "Shoot the messenger" approach. You never said it would work, and you telling them it wouldn't didn't magically change it so it couldn't, because it never could to begin with. Even somebody not knowledgable about hardware has the capacity to understand at least the basics, if they make the effort. Quote I am sure there are lots of techs like us out there who have to be the bearer of bad news. Sometimes you feel like the doctor who comes out to the waiting room to tell the computer owner that their computer has passed on unless it gets a brain transplant that costs more than teh computer is worth. Just figured I'd share this since I found it kind of funny that that HP Computer would show up 11 years later and I havent seen another of this same model in the last 11 years. I'll say it again: I find it infuriating. Your telling them what REALITY is, and they are acting like that answer has somehow changed it, as if their false belief that Crysis 2 would ever run on such an underpowered machine was EVER the case. Then, in this case, they act like spending money on something somehow makes it true. Maybe if you did a little more research before spending money on these things you might have discovered how stupid your beliefs about it are, and that believing salespeople that often work on commission is sort of like believing a person that uses child labour about how they actually run a daycare and the kids making shoes for 12 hours a day is arts and crafts.Quote It was funny because I'm not much of a gamer and I assume that everybody that tries to work there is all up in the games with Call of Duty. If I had started there and somebody asked about "Call of Duty" I would have probably directed them to the bathroom...[/quote]Yes, I'm sure if I depended on it for my livelihood I would be equally abhorrent to be so brash. Thankfully, since it's usually done as a "favour" I don't have to worry about it. If they get offended and never consult me again, mission accomplished. And if they learn something and defer to me in the future- still mission accomplished. Quote from: DaveLembke on May 18, 2013, 04:47:14 PM The mother was a little upset to hear the news. She was like I just spent $150 on games and your telling me this computer cant run them when the Gamestop clerk told me that these games would run on this computer. In addition to this her son already opened 2 of the titles which makes them non refundable.I would have taken ALL those games back to store and gotten my money back, and yes they'd give me every penny back. It's as simple as going in upset and talking to the manager "Manager, your clerk lied to me..." (and yes, strong words like "lied" work very well) I think it was bad for the clerk telling her that the games would run. But if she went in and complained to the manager and the store made it right to her then it wouldn't be so bad. It's like that electronics store that sold me a monitor a few months ago... they told me it had HDMI when it didn't (it was just a mistake on their part), but they made it right... a full refund and a discount/deal on next purchase. It drives me mad with what is often sold as a "gaming" PC nowadays. I see them all the time "Gaming PC, 16gb RAM, 6 core CPU" and they throw in a low end graphics card like a GeForce 610. Like do they expect people to buy them, find their games run really badly and just put up with it? I even remember passing by a PC in a store, some sort of HP Pavilion Machine with an AMD APU, HP had fitted an NVIDIA video card that was actually worse performing than the APU! I bet the only reason they did that was so they could put a little sticker on the FRONT saying that it had "NVIDIA Graphics".Quote I even remember passing by a PC in a store, some sort of HP Pavilion Machine with an AMD APU, HP had fitted an NVIDIA video card that was actually worse performing than the APU! I bet the only reason they did that was so they could put a little sticker on the front saying that it had "NVIDIA Graphics". LOL thats too funny. But yes I have seen before brands use the nVidia name in large print on computers before such as in which motherboards with the integrated nVidia 6150SE/LE for desktop computers were advertised with the intent that they were designed for gaming. And the 6150 SE/LE is an extremely weak integrated GPU as part of the nForce 430 chipset. Back in 2009 when I bought my current motherboard it had the nVidia integrated chipset and I figured I'd give it a try with World of Warcraft, since I had a system with the GeForce 6200 8x AGP video card and that ran WoW with no problems on normal settings at the time. The 6150 was completely crippled compared to the 6200, I could swear that a GeForce FX5200 probably was a better GPU, and that this 6150 was the equivilent to that of maybe a GeForce 4 MX 440 in comparison and a GeForce 4 MX 440 was no match for games released in 2008 when this motherboard was manufactured as well as WoW would only run on the 6150 integrated GPU on the lowest settings even when allocating more shared memory to it with a frame rate of 8 to 14 frames per second, which pointed to the GPU as just being extremely weak. Quote from: camerongray on May 22, 2013, 08:31:02 AM It drives me mad with what is often sold as a "gaming" PC nowadays. Like do they expect people to buy them, find their games run really badly and just put up with it? Totally agree with this. My build is from 2009, which is now 4 years old. I've seen people on forums that bought completely new PCs having performance issues with games that I can run no problem. The companies either install some super-fast processor and crappy GPU, or vice-versa. I recall a salesman trying to tell me 2GB DDR3 is 'equivalent' to 4GB of DDR2. |

Solve : will apple buy intel? |
Answer» Not all of the items are far-fetched. Really, there is some basis for some. A new rumor has surfaced reporting that Apple has TEAMED up with Intel to create the iWatch for a 2013 release. While the idea of an iOS-based watch makes total sense for the fruity company, teaming up with Intel does not given that Apple has yet to rely on the x86 chip giant in its mobile product lineup. The team-up seems even more less likely given that the watch will reportedly CONNECT to an ARM-based iPhone and iPad via a Bluetooth connection.http://www.tomshardware.com/news/iWatch-iPod-Nano-6th-Generation-Intel-ARM,20029.htmlThere's also a rumor N.Korea is set to invade Taiwan...Quote from: patio on May 22, 2013, 04:04:41 PM There's also a rumor N.Korea is set to invade Taiwan...If they do that... Solve : Stick with Windows 7 32-bit or upgrade to Win 7 64-bit?? |
Answer» So here is the situation: My system maxes out on 4GB of RAM and has 4GB RAM installed. I have been running Windows 7 32-bit for about 3 years now on this system only using 3GB of the 4GB. Hardware is: Biostar MCP6PB M2+ Motherboard Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz running overclocked at just under 2.8Ghz CPU with FSB at 215Mhz vs 200 and 13x multiplier Corsair XMS2 DDR2 800Mhz ( 2 x 2GB = 4GB ) RAM *Maximum supported by motherboard. ASUS ATI Radeon HD5450 Video Card with 1GB DDR3 500GB SATA II HDD 90GB OCZ Vertex 3 SSD DVD-RW Optical drive My wifes old system a Pentium E5400 was running Windows 7 64-bit and the motherboard died, and the current system Core 2 Duo E6600 I gave her as a replacement is running one of the Windows 7 32-bit licenses off a Windows 7 32-bit 3-pack that I bought. So her Win7 64-bit license is no longer in use and I was thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 64-bit on my system. But here are my questions: While I know that Windows 7 64-bit is the way to go for future computing and 32-bit will be a thing of the past, I am wondering if its at all worth it to get an extra 1GB of memory out of this current build? ( I am thinking it will be a wash on the gain going from 32 to 64-bit ) Also I read something about 16-bit applications not supported under Windows 7 64-bit and I have some old games and software that I occasionally run on my Windows 7 32-bit build, would I need to now run these 16-bit applications within a dosbox type environment etc or would they still run in Windows 7 64-bit with xp compatability selected etc? I also read that while I would get the full 4GB of RAM, since the data is 64-bits wide, it would consume more memory with each clock cycle, so would Windows 7 64-bit on 4GB of RAM run worse than Windows 7 32-bit on 3GB RAM? ( To me it seems that if the data width in memory is 2x the 32-bits for 64-bits that the consumption may be double, and so while right now my system runs idle at 2GB free with 1GB at idle in use with Windows 7 32-bit, it should mean that 2GB is in use at idle and I would still REMAIN at 2GB free at 4GB addressable, so there is no extra memory gain with Windows 7 64-bit? ) My thoughts and do you agree or should I upgrade to 64-bit on current build: Thinking that maybe I should save this Windows 7 64-bit license for a system that runs on more than 4GB of RAM which would benefit far greater than current build, but I also dont have any intentions on upgrading hardware yet since what I have currently is plenty of processing power hardware wise for games etc, although the thought remains that I am not using my system to its full abilities running hardware that is capable of 64-bit at 32-bit and running at the 3GB memory limitation. Was also thinking of installing another hard drive into my system for 32-bit HDD and 64-bit HDD for option at boot, but problem is that I only have 2 SATA ports and both are already in use, so if I did this, i would have to physically move SATA cables between drives -or- install a removable HDD bay and have 1 drive with 32-bit and the other with 64-bit.... but if there is no real advantage, i am thinking why waste the time messing with this. Also feel free to share any other advantages or disadvantages of each 32-bit and 64-bit Windows 7 if there are any that I havent stated here that I may not be aware of.It's also probably using closer to 3.4 - 3.6 Gig...depends on RAM demand. However if you plan on adding more RAM down the line for vid EDITING or any intensive RAM apps by all means go for it... Any current 32 Bit apps will run fine on it and you'll see an approx 12 -15% more quickness using true 64 bit apps... Other than that stand pat with it as is. As far as 16 Bit apps...some don't even run in compatibility mode but most do. I just keep all those on my Win2K rig anyways so i haven't come close to testing which work...and which won't.Quote from: DaveLembke on May 24, 2013, 03:53:50 PM While I know that Windows 7 64-bit is the way to go for future computing and 32-bit will be a thing of the past, I am wondering if its at all worth it to get an extra 1GB of memory out of this current build? ( I am thinking it will be a wash on the gain going from 32 to 64-bit )The computer has a 64-bit processor. What this means is that it has an entire operation mode and set of instructions optimized and designed for 64-bit usage. if you run a 32-bit OS, you can NEVER use those features from within it. They are unavailable. The processor acts like a conventional 32-bit x86 processor and you get none of the added benefits of 64-bit. (being able to access more memory is not 32/64-bit specific insomuch as a license restriction MS has purposely put in 32-bit versions of consumer Windows versions (Windows 2003 Enterprise, for example, is 32-bit but can use up to 64GB of memory). Quote Also I read something about 16-bit applications not supported under Windows 7 64-bit and I have some old games and software that I occasionally run on my Windows 7 32-bit build, would I need to now run these 16-bit applications within a dosbox type environment etc or would they still run in Windows 7 64-bit with xp compatability selected etc?Yes. Absolutely no pure DOS or 16-bit Windows Applications will run directly on a 64-bit Windows OS no matter what you do. (thus requiring DOSBox or another virtualization system). DOSBox gives them a better environment anyway, IMO. Quote I also read that while I would get the full 4GB of RAM, since the data is 64-bits wide, it would consume more memory with each clock cycle, so would Windows 7 64-bit on 4GB of RAM run worse than Windows 7 32-bit on 3GB RAM? ( To me it seems that if the data width in memory is 2x the 32-bits for 64-bits that the consumption may be double, and so while right now my system runs idle at 2GB free with 1GB at idle in use with Windows 7 32-bit, it should mean that 2GB is in use at idle and I would still remain at 2GB free at 4GB addressable, so there is no extra memory gain with Windows 7 64-bit? )Whoever told you this doesn't know what they are talking about. the Width of the data bus is how much can be transferred at once. Using the standard analogy of highway lanes, a 32-bit processor has 32 lanes, and a 64-bit processor has 64 lanes. a 64-bit processor run in 32-bit mode only uses 32 of those lanes. The rest SIT idle. "data" doesn't have width. Only the bus. The idea that bus width directly correlates to memory consumption makes absolutely no sense. Some people say that Pointers become 64-bit, but the FACT is that the impact that has is so negligible, it's hardly worth mention. Quote Thinking that maybe I should save this Windows 7 64-bit license for a system that runs on more than 4GB of RAM which would benefit far greater than current build, but I also dont have any intentions on upgrading hardware yet since what I have currently is plenty of processing power hardware wise for games etc, although the thought remains that I am not using my system to its full abilities running hardware that is capable of 64-bit at 32-bit and running at the 3GB memory limitation.Running a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit system is like running a 16-bit OS on a 32-bit system. There is an entire operating Mode and set of instructions that the processor is pretty much optimized for that sit's completely unused. Personally I don't see what reason you would ever have to run a dual-boot with a 32-bit system- or reasons to run a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit system at all. Quote Personally I don't see what reason you would ever have to run a dual-boot with a 32-bit system- or reasons to run a 32-bit OS on a 64-bit system at all.Personally, I don' see any reason not to have a dual-boot system. I only have Windows 7 Home Premium of both 32 and 64 bit packages. Would be realy cool if it works and I can essentially have 4 licenses activated as 64-bit if needed with the 3 licenses of the 32-bit package and 1 license of the 64-bit package. I have a spare 1TB HDD from my old WHS build, which I brought my NEW WHS build down to 160GB storage because 1TB was way too much wasted space and would be nice to have more free HDD in my system since on my 500GB I only have about 60GB free with all the games installed etc. Thanks for info everyone and clarifying detailsWin7 keys are the same for 32 or 64Bit...as long as the version matches as Calum stated and your not running it on more than 1 PC atthe time you should be fine...VERY COOL!!!! Thanks for everyone's input on this Going to hold off on the 64-bit upgrade until my new motherboard and 8GB of RAM shows up that I bought today. Will be migrating my Athlon II x4 620 CPU and Video Card to this new motherboard and hopefully buy the AMD FX 8350 for this new motherboard maxing it out in September as a birthday gift to self. So tempted to buy the 8-core CPU now for $201, but my wife works for school system and doesn't earn any money when school is out, so I must wait until Sept. Maybe it will go on sale for $150 or less before Sept. Gonna tuck away $40 a paycheck I think So cant wait to have this 8-core 4Ghz Monster CPU as well as pair up the 8GB with another 8GB for 16GB RAM running Windows 7 64-bit http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284&Tpk=amd%20fx%208350%208%20core%20processor&IsVirtualParent=1 |

Solve : Default Font & Size in Google Sheets? |

Answer» I have created a multi-tab Google Sheets document. I would like to maintain a certain FONT and font size each and every TIME I edit the document or those who have access edit it. For some reason I am having great difficulty as it seems to revert back to Arial 10 often. How can I create a DEFAULT that will stay put? I am sure that by highlighting all existing data, I can switch it to the default of my choice. it is the new entry material that doesn't seem to want to stick to a default I have chosen. Any support would be great, thanks!Google says: Every cell in a new SPREADSHEET uses the same default formatting. As you begin to build a spreadsheet, you can customize the formatting to make your information easier to view and understand. In our example, we will be using a spreadsheet to plan and organize a GARDEN plot. Source: https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/googlespreadsheets/formatting-cells/1/ Check the video on that site. |

Solve : Unsuccessful installation? |
Answer» I purchased a Hewlett-Packard 600 All-in-one through Ebay. I connected the appropriate parallel cable. I downloaded the necessary installation software from the HP website. Prior to installing, I followed installation instructions regarding ECP port settings in the Device Manager and the Bios. During the process of installing when the computer has been connected to the computer and powered on, the computer is supposed to recognize new hardware, but it doesn't. Restarting does not help. Installation does not proceed to the point of installing drivers so that I get an error message concerning no communication between the computer and printer. I have tried to install it manually, but the process does not allow me to select the drivers in the driver cache folder. I have uninstalled and REINSTALLED the software a number of times. HP's TECH support said that they have done everything they can to help me and that it must be a system problem. Is there anyone out there who can suggest something? I have tried so many things at this point that I am about to pull my hair out!!! Marylpf, |

I tried swapping the power connections from the power supply and also tried swapping out the hard drive with no success. I pulled the CMOS BAT and memory to TRY and clear any possible faults but alas it still freezes on start up. After about a HALF hour of starting and turning it off i can get to the desk top but then it will freeze yet again. Am I looking at a bad mother board or bad processor? Any cheep hints I dont want to dump a lot of cash into it, I already have a new comp, just wanted to make it a kids comp. Thanks, Shawn. It sounds like the fan in the psu may be bad ( the buzz you're hearing). PSU's are pretty cheap but you get what you pay for.. check www.pricewatch.com for prices. You'll find that you can get a power supply for under 20 bucks. |

Solve : Re: keyboard--the ENTER not working properly? |
Answer» Our first RECOMMENDATION WOULD be to attempt to clean the keyboard. Unfortunately laptop KEYBOARDS can be difficult to clean. What you could try is buying a can of compressed air and blow air under the keyboard key to see if it dislodges any dirt or HAIR that may be causing your issue. |

Solve : My mouse keeps freezing!? |
Answer» I origionally had a Microsoft optical mouse but my son needed a mouse for his new computer so I bought myself a cordless and gave him the optical. Well the cordless worked fine for a few days and then kept freezing. I had to keep clicking the connect button on the bottom and then it would only work for a few seconds before freezing again. I figured it was a hardware conflict so I went back to my optical mouse. |

Solve : Re: Swapping HDD with Win98 already installed.? |
Answer» Check the time in the Bios if it is corrent then your battery is fine. I think you need to aquire a new CD (preferbly XP) and do a format/fresh install. How do I check the time? I know it's basic but!when it posts (black screen with writing ect) press 'del' REPEATEDLY then you will go into the blue bios screen. once there go into the first OPTION called bios settings/features/options it should be in there. I dont think it is a flat battery tho.THANKS, I'll have a look. I don't think its "seeing" the new drive even though its set to master and the CD to slave (same ribbon).in the bios you can set your HDD to manual or auto (not sure what section). set it to auto.OK. See you later, thanks for your help. Need to DISMANTLE this one again!Sorted. Put a new ribbon straight from the board to the drive, with a separate one for the CD. Thanks again. |

Solve : what to do? what to do? I can't format...? |
Answer» what to do? what to do? I have accepted the fact that I will have to format my hard disk after chkdsk /r and chkdsk /p and fixmbr all failed to complete. However, on formating through the recovery console I get: a blue error screen saying ... the problem seems to be caused by the following file: partmgr.sys It also says: STOP: 0x000000CE (0xF7933667,0x00000000,0xF7933667,0x00000000) partmgr.sys Please help. Can I somehow reformat my hard disk and at least try recovering some of my important files? Or will I have to BUY another hard disk - I have a lap top and this will be pricey...I found this, but i dont know if it will help you, becasue if you cant get into WINDOWS it will be hard in get/install the SP. SYMPTOMS When Partition Manager (Partmgr.sys) RECEIVES the Plug and Play IRP_MN_QUERY_DEVICE_RELATIONS| RemovalRelation command, Partition Manager forwards the call to lower level drivers. However, the results are not sustained, so the device does not include remove relations, and must be removed individually. This behavior may cause a memory leak. CAUSE This problem may occur if Partition Manager does not combine the results that are reported by the lower level driver, but instead overwrote a memory pointer. Solve : Interesting Internet Problem? |
Answer» Okay, here's my problem. I can get on the internet using Internet Explorer and AOL Instand Messenger, but Netscape, Mozilla, FTP Clients, and any other programs that require internet access can't connect. I know a lot about COMPUTERS and stuff, and I tried everything I know including restarting my DSL MODEM and my Netgear ROUTER, but nothing happened. Please someone help me. You will be my hero forever and ever.Make sure your network setup doesn't require any type of special network settings / proxy settings to get connected onto the Internet. The easiest way to check this would be to open Internet Explorer, click Tools and Internet OPTIONS, open the Connections tab, and click the "LAN settings" button. If any additional settings are listed in this section it is likely that these settings will also need to be in your other browsers for them to successfully connect to the Internet. |

Hello I've have remove all other hardware, no luck i have aslo had no errors on the hard drive, and have used the disk to install on another pc Please could you EXPLAIN how to use CMOS setup to make sure the computer hardware does not have a virus protection enabled. Thanks Again MattQuote Hello matt, Did you enter bios to make sure the virus protection was not enabled? Did you save your new config data in bios after removing all? hardware Is it an ASUS board and r u sure of the numbers? If it is an asus and the K#V sounds like ASUS I bet the # is K7V-T and it does not support the xp 24oo there is also a patch the for AGP video. I also had a similar event with XP and It turned out to be a bad ram stick. Pull them out one at a time and make sure u dupkicate the event. If you you still have a prob then try the other ram stick and see what it does but chk compatability of ALL individual components to INSURE they will work together - and check the model # of motherboard and go to the manufacturers website. I will bet u aren't the only one who has experienced that particular problem. GOOD LUCK. and remeber: that which doesn't kill us or get us thrown in the same cell with Bubba makes us stronger. Rick If it works get back and let us know? :-/ http://www.asus.com.tw/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspxCheers Rick i tried to disable the virus protection, but i could not find the option in my BIOS. After reading around i understand that some BIOS do not have such a feature? I have used a BIOS agent to find the following BIOS Date: 12/10/02 BIOS Type: American Megatrends BIOS ID: 62-P120-001368-00101111-040201-VIA_K7-K7VT2120 OEM Sign-On: K7VT2 BIOS P1.20 Chipset: VIA 82C3099 rev 0 Superio: Winbond 697HF rev 2 found at port 2Eh OS: Microsoft Windows 98 SE CPU Type: AMD Athlon(tm) XP 2400+ CPU Speed: 2000 Mhz CPU Max: 3000 Mhz BIOS ROM In Socket: Yes BIOS ROM Size: 256K Memory Installed: 512 MB Memory Maximum: 4096 MB Memory Slot 01: 0 MB Memory Slot 02: 0 MB Memory Slot 03: 256 MB Memory Slot 04: 256 MB Any advise would be of great help!! Thanks MATT Dear I have faced this problem. u must repalced your HDD and try again Good Luck Dear I have installed Win 98 on the HDD so why not Win 2000?. The hard drive is brand new. I have mailed maxtor and ASrock for advise, still awaiting for a response. Does anyone think that upgrading the BIOS will solve the problem? Thanks Matt Depending on the age of the computer a BIOS update may help with your upgrade. If you are able to install Windows 98 with no problems it is definately not a hard drive related issue however.!!Problem solved!! I flashed my bios to the newest version via Asrock, but a little later on in the setup froze at scanning C drive. Than I removed one of my memory sticks, Bingo!! For some unknown reason it worked after updating the BIOS and remove one RAM stick, leaving only one. (as "e POX" posted) Many thanks to all who posted. With a bit of luck I will not post again, unless to help some other frustrated :-/ pc user! Thanks for the follow up. We always enjoy finding out what the end solution was to a users problem. |
