Solve : The cat strikes again - Plastic Bottle Cap Solution? |
Answer» Not sure if anyone has had this problem before, but it has happened over 3x to me. My one CAT will venture under my desk and step on stuff, and sometimes knock stuff over or turn switches off. I have an Irish Wolfhound...any good tips for him ? ? hmmmmm.... Thinking you will have to go with one of Tesla's ideas of wireless power transmission. Your home is basically surrounded in a primary transformer winding and everything internally is powered off of their own secondary windings cordlessly from the extreme EMF's Oh and anything important like computers, hard drives, etc should be surrounded in faraday cages including possibly a faraday outfit of copper woven clothing to avoid any ill health effects of prolonged EMF exposure. Just be sure to change before leaving the house in a BAD storm or you'd be a walking lightning rod in copper mesh woven clothing. Hee...nicely played. |

Solve : I have messed up my Outlook 365 viewing? |
Answer» I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite P875-S7102 with Windows 8. There are several difference of course that take getting used to but I have one thing that is DRIVING me crazy. I USE Outlook 365 for work and at some POINT I enlarged my view of Outlook. When I am in Outlook all of my tabs of other internet pages are normal as WELL as the main address bar. I still have all other web pages in a normal size as well as all other program on my laptop. I realize there is a zoom in function to the space bar with used with the Function KEY, however, that just makes it larger. The keyboard is very sensitive as well as the 'mousepad' and I did something by accident to enlarge the page. Is anyone aware of how to fix this? Thanks in advance! |

Solve : Transfer text to mp3 player?? |
Answer» Can I somehow transfer my own text to an MP3 player? I have a device with e-book capability and I wondered if I could make text notes using this. The only info I can find refer to music, e-book, or video files. When you plug your mp3 player into a computer using a USB lead you should see it showing up as a drive letter, probably with folders under that drive letter. Some of these probably hold music albums. Possibly the mp3 player already has folders created for music, SPEECH notes, e-books etc. Check this out. what comes up when I connect the device is "Removable disk (E:)" with the option "open folder to view files", and this just shows what's already loaded. Why don't you copy a text file from your computer into there? That's what I was suggesting before. I have tried a text file - MS Word "rich text format" - and sent that to the device folder, but that is just listed there as a text document. I can't figure out any way of getting it on to my mp3. It's not at all IMPORTANT - I was curious to find out if it could be done. I've tried the voice recorder and spoken the note I wanted and that has worked fine.Quote from: silkie on July 07, 2013, 02:03:23 AM I have tried a text file - MS Word "rich text format" - and sent that to the device folder, but that is just listed there as a text document. I can't figure out any way of getting it on to my mp3. If it is in the folder, then it is in the mp3 player's file storage. It won't get transformed into an mp3 so you can hear the words. Some mp3 PLAYERS have an e-book feature where you can view the words of a text file on the mp3 player's screen. I thought that was what you wanted to do. That was what I wanted to do - to see the printed text on my device. Even though the file is listed in the device folder on my pc and both are connected there is no file listed in the e-book function on my player. I'll have a careful look at my User's Manual, I must be doing something wrong.Quote from: silkie on July 07, 2013, 03:10:40 AM That was what I wanted to do - to see the printed text on my device. Even though the file is listed in the device folder on my pc and both are connected there is no file listed in the e-book function on my player. I'll have a careful look at my User's Manual, I must be doing something wrong. I have a "Coby" mp3 player, a fairly cheap Chinese model, and it will show (plain text) .txt files and maybe certain others I believe. It is possible that your player will not read rich text format files. Also like many others my player has a folder structure on the internal storage - there are top level folders with names like PHOTO, VIDEO, MUSIC, VOICE, TEXT etc and you have to put files directly (or in subfolders) under the right top folder, if not the player may not see them and offer them to you to view or play. So yes, study the manual and any folder structure on the device. Possibly you could tell us the brand and model of your player? My mp3 player is Kubik Evo 8GB - very neat little device I've had for a couple of weeks and not yet very familiar with. It must be similar to the model you have, with the functions you quoted. Looking at the manual I see that the e-book option supports .txt format text, as you intimated, so I'll try to do something with that.Another thing to think about is that mp3 players have (so to speak) a little brain inside that keeps track of what media files are stored. When I add files to my Coby it needs to update its library before I can view or play them, it does this when you power it on. It detects that files have been added or REMOVED and offers to update the library (you have to select 'Yes' or 'No') but my previous 2 mp3 players did it automatically without asking. Whichever way, each player needs to be disconnected from the computer and powered up from cold otherwise new files are not seen. [update - I saw your reply - your player and mine look very similar, I wouldn't be surprised if they work very much the same] From a review I found: Quote The player comes with folders for Music, eBooks, Photos and Videos http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/portable-mp3-player/kubik-evo-8gb/1536784/ The screen is only 160 pixels by 128 so you are not going to see a lot of words at a time, and I can imagine that reading a whole novel would be a pain in the *censored*, but you can have fun trying. There are lots (thousands) of free e-books in text format around, a good place to start is Project Gutenberg. I read the review you sent the link for, and agree with everything said there. The e-book function is ludicrous with such a small screen (I also had "The Complete Works of Shakespeare"!), but although it has it's faults, it does me very well as I use it exclusively for audiobooks and some radio. I'll keep plugging away until I master the unhelpful controls. Thanks again for your comments. |

Solve : 'Index of'? |
Answer» Hi there, However, I have not used XAMP, so I do not know what, if any, harm nit could do to Windows.None whatsoever that I've ever experienced. If you (or someone at another computer) don't TYPE your hostname or IP address (or 'localhost' if you're local) into the browser's URL bar to access your computer, XAMPP won't even act like it exists. Having everything redirect to localhost suggests a proxy issue, hosts file issue, or any other cause that could just as easily have nothing to do with XAMPP. @OP: I'd just ask your friend what he did. If he doesn't remember or won't tell you, check your proxy servers like DaveLembke suggested and also check to see if something's WEIRD in your hosts file. Any troubleshooting that has to do with all traffic being redirected to one website should apply equally here. Anything specific to localhost redirection would help too, but I highly doubt it's an XAMPP-specific problem.TechnoGeek, Thanks for the correction. Yes, he needs to find out what else his friend did. |

Solve : Standard 5.25 Mic to USB Adapter? |
Answer» Basically, I'm trying to make a USB Adapter for a standard 5.25 Mic. I don't really have funds to just get a USB Mic. However, I think that there are enough parts here that I can save an build an apater. I got a USB Cable, Jacks but, I probably can't just wire a jack too the USB Cable. Why do you want a USB mic? What about one that connects to a regular 3.5mm connector? I believe they generally cost much less than USB mics. 3.5mm mics can be very inexpensive. I am an electronics technician ... You wont be able to make a working USB MIC by just wiring a MIC to 4 USB wires, you need electronics with an amplifier with Analog to Digital Converter and ability to pass the audio digitally through the USB communications as well as a driver that will handle this. This is not something that is easily accomplished through a simple solder job and electrical tape! So is my dad thats why I indicated that I have the probabole parts needed. Cause, I need it for game playing not audio recording :/ I figured I may need an amplifier board. I may look into that but, I didnt want to have too buy like a whole bunch of stuff. Guitar Hero an Rock Band just don't like not haveing a mic :/ I am famiular with those brands and find them to be okay an more of newegg's lower ended stuff. Quote So is my dad thats why I indicated that I have the probabole parts needed. Cause, I need it for game playing not audio recording :/ I figured I may need an amplifier board. Cool that he is also an ET, but its far cheaper and far less time involved to buy one of these than it is to create your own. Even if you are able to get the parts needed and come in at less than $8 which I estimate that parts alone unless you can buy through a source that gets volume discount will go beyond $8. Plus you will have to hand solder all the many connections and hand soldering surface mount chips takes a lot of skill and precision not to stress the component with the heat running up the components legs and end up with a solder bridge when the flux primes the legs and the molten solder quickly flows and bridges them.. ( BEEN THERE myself and having to solder wick the bridge away without damaging the chip and the PCB ). After all of this is done. Many hours invested in making this device, you then need it to be supported by the system with a driver. I am not aware of any open source or generic drivers to pair up with USB Analog/Digital Audio communications to make it work for your project. If my child approached me as an ET, to make this device, I'd just buy the $8 adapter and be done with it. If my child approached me wanting to make something that doesn't already or affordably exist that is a must have, I'd take the project on if its one that wont cost too much time and money. Fortunately the only request I have had so far was my 8 yr old daughter wanting her own computer and wanted it to be HELLO Kitty theme,... I said thats easy, lets go shopping! So I took a old late 1990's beige steel case computer tower I already had and spray painted it hot pink with all the boards, drives etc removed, and bought her a bunch of Hello Kitty stickers to affix to it after I stuffed an old but still powerful enough Pentium 4 HT 2.8Ghz motherboard into it with 1GB RAM and a GeForce 6200 8x AGP video card for her gaming (Angry BIRDS and World of Warcraft Starter Edition FREE) and web SURFING ( mainly youtube music videos ) etc. Only problem now is that her friends saw it and they want one just like it... and I cant sell Hello Kitty Computer towers without fear of being sued. So I told the parents that if they want, give me a computer and I will spray paint it hot pink and they can add their own stickers etc that make it Hello Kitty Theme..LOL Doesn't matter what your Dad does or how many spare parts are lying around the radio station...fact is it's a waste of time to do it. Quote from: DaveLembke on April 12, 2013, 04:22:09 PM
Yeah, He has a degree in it too. Yeah, to make the converter probably be the longest too do. Yeah, I dont really have a good iron like I did have right now but, he has a fine tipped iron that I could use. You can get adapters for those? Thats pertty sweet. You could of done a BIT more too it depending on the OS. |

Solve : Phone Call Came Through Comp Speaker? |
Answer» My first question is what happened to my question? Why is it not in the list? I am henceforth asking it again because I want to KOW why my phone call was coming through my computer speaker. I don't have a phone mic or any comp accoutrement and my phone 'hands free' was off. IWasn't this already posted? A standard modem has a small speaker used to monitor the connection until synchronization is squired. During that time period it amplifies anything on the phone line. Did you have the phone handset off hook? Hi, and yes the topic was posted, however I never received notification of any replies. Today when I came in to post about something else I noticed the question wasn't in the forum queue so I reposted it. The answer to the question you asked is yes. I was on the phone talking through the handset for a few minutes then suddenly I heard my convo coming through the monitor or speaker. Anyway, it's NEER happened before and I just wanted to know why it happened now. My mom even heard the echoing sounds of my voice. But it lasted only a minute or two. So now, I wasn't being lojacked, it was simply a computer modem type thing? Thanks! Maybe you modem was set to answer on ring. You voice may have tripped the modem answer circuit and it initialed a connection. Or maybe nit is broke and COMES one randomly. On maybe somebody pulled a prank on you."...somebody pulled a prank on you" What does that mean? Rather how would they do that? Are you suggesting I've been hacked and my ID compromised? Let me ask you because I'm not a comp geek in the least. Can anyone place TRACKER on your comp esp someone hwho works in government communications, like a troubleshooter with phone calls and such? I really never got the gist of what he does. Except he works for G'ment.Your original thread is still there but has been moved down the list. Anyway, here's my original reply: --- It's been a long time since I used a dial-up modem but I do remember occasionally having this happen when trying to dial in when someone was on the phone. It's nothing to worry about - It's just like when you pick up the phone when the computer is connected and you hear the modem down the phone line, exactly the same but instead of hearing the computer through the phone you are hearing the phone through the computer. So it's not any sort of tracking/spying, all I can assume is that for some reason when you were on the phone your modem flipped on and tried to connect, possibly DUE to something running on the PC trying to connect to the internet.Okay camerongray... I don't know what it is with the phones in my home they all seem to work when the want. Maybe it has to do with being connected to the comp. I appreciate the help from both of you and would hate to think my friend is tracking me. About the OP I went down the list at least 2 weeks and didn't see it. Sorry for the double post. HAGO...When I said prank, I was thinking of someone in your house. If they could get into your computer they could schedule the modem to start at a later time. Like two minuets later, 'nuff time to go hide. CH does not endorse such pranks..... No, that's not the case! But thanks for allaying my concerns. |

Solve : Phone Call Amplified Via Comp Speaker? |

Answer» I use a modem as you all may recall... but why did I hear my phone call through my COMPUTER speaker today? No I don't have a comp mic.I' trying to recall if I had phone on speaker phone or not. I may have had but I PICKED up before an answer on the other end. My MOM hates speaker phone. Solve : smf? What does it take to run something like this?? |
Answer» Hello and thanks for visiting my thread. Hello and thanks for visiting my thread. You need a Web Server. Usually, a web server would be run by somebody else, and you either pay for shared or dedicated hosting. My website is on a server which I've never seen, and is a shared hosting account on that machine. I pay a monthly fee to "rent" that shared hosting, and the hosting service is responsible for it staying up. It that case, the hosting provider provides everything that was needed. SMF is written in PHP and therefore the system it runs on requires a PHP interpreter. Most systems are "LAMP" stack hosts, which means they typically run a Linux variant as the Operating System, Apache as the web server, MySQL for the database, and PHP as the main server scripting language. SMF uses MySQL and PHP and installing it on a lamp server is as simple as untarring/unzipping the provided SMF scripts onto the server, then running through the configuration by navigating to that site. Yes. Thanks patio, I did see that, perhaps even before today. (in fact most definitely ). Seeing something like that though doesnt always mean that I've "seen" it. (as in I had an understanding of what that actually means or does. ) I was going to post in the question that I have seen it on the bottom of each page, but never had the interest to persue the link. I suppose you might call it my AH-ha moment. BC_Programmer thank you too. Would someone like Go-Daddy be the provider, they "keep" it on their server & I access the program to edit things as I want them. So basically, I need to know a lot of stuff! PHP, then edit things in something like Filezilla, upload it to the server & test its FUNCTIONALITY. and I have to learn code of some sort to find errors? Hmmm... am I young enough to learn how to do all of this do you think? Is there a novice version of this? Hahahaha. I had been thinking of starting my own website to sell "stuff" (not Feebay), but I've only had a limited exposure to this sort of thing. GoDaddy.com is a popular domain name registrar. In other words, you can you them to register a web address that's you'd like to have for your website/forum. Of course, the web address, or domain name, must be available, meaning not already taken by someone else. In addition to domain name registration, you need an account with a web hosting service, as BC_Programmer mentioned. GoDaddy.com does provide hosting service, in addition to domain name registration, or you can choose among scores of independent hosting services. Here's one list: The Top 10 Web Hosting Companies of 2013, but there are many more if you care to search. Most hosting services make installation of a forum on a website easy, although it may not be an SMF forum. This can usually be done via a Control Panel, or cPanel, that can be accessed via web browser once you've created an account with them. No programming knowledge is required to do this. But, you will need to learn how the administrative panel of the forum WORKS so that you can create your major topic sections in the forum and perform numerous administrative tasks. |

Solve : HP Online Chat ... Is it me or does this guy seem like HP wont match Toshiba? |
Answer» Is it me or does the highlighted line in this HP chat seem not very competetive to get my business. I took this as that HP never offers free shipping through their online store and its ALWAYS going to come at a cost to me the customer. Toshiba is offering FREE shipping until 7/15/2013. Which to me this seems like HP may not match that without having to go through the extra effort to call experts. A Chat Agent will be right with you.In my experience it's worth giving them a call rather than going through the online chat. Each vendor is different, sometimes the online chat is better, but with them not being particularly helpful I would be inclined to call. We don't DEAL with HP directly, we use a distributor for our IT, not to mention we're in different countries, so I can't really tell you from experience whether they're likely to offer free shipping or not. Worth a phone call though remember you'll be calling a sales team, not tech support, so you're less likely to get put through to India/Pakistan/Timbuktu. A tip, just make it clear that if they're not competitive they will lose the sale to a competitor. It really will depend on their targets, figures, and a hundred other things, but you may well be able to negotiate a discount and/or free shipping. |

Solve : Any suggestions... Friend is looking for new laptop with a budget of $700? |
Answer» A friend of mine contacted me looking for a computer that he will get 5+ years out of with everyday computer use. He is not a gamer so he can get by on integrated video. He e-mailed me with these 2 models that he was looking at when I suggested Toshiba. He doesnt have to buy a Toshiba brand LAPTOP so any other good name brands/make/models that come to mind feel free to share. Specifications customized The core i3 tecra was configured here: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000045900 *There was a Core i3 that was 100Mhz faster for $50 more but that seemed like a waste of $50, and the Core i5 which I would have liked to get him as a CPU puts him over budget with a price tag of $789.99 with the +$150 to add this CPU instead of the default Core i3 Looking at the 2 laptops he sent me asking for suggestions, the AMD quadcore running 1.5Ghz I have this strong feeling that it will act like all other computers that operate below 2Ghz which lag, even though it has 4 cores as well as it will become too slow for multitasking use if not now, definately before 5 years expected use is met. With the Core i7 which looked like the perfect laptop for him at first, the drawback is that the battery is internal, and not user replaceable! This is the very first laptop I have ever come across in which the battery was not easily removable. Thinking back at the many times in which removing a PC battery and reconnecting the battery fixed a hung laptop, on this model that is not an option without splitting the case open which is a very stupid intended design feature! Before I try to sell him on the idea to go with the Core i3 Tecra, I figured I'd get input from others. Maybe there are better deals out there for a laptop with good reviews, low tech maintenance to hold up to heavy data entry and multitasking, and one that either comes brand new with Windows 7 64-bit or can be downgraded to Windows 7 64-bit and still be within budget? I already know that trying to tell him to go with the Core i3 over the Core i7 laptop is going to feel like reverse logic to him, but the way I see it, it looks like they are trying to use the Core i7 CPU to sell low quality guts that surround that better performing CPU.... I dont want to suggest a laptop that will be a lemon, so I am trying to get him the best performance and quality for his money hardware wise as well as Windows 7 downgrade option at the get go. I want this laptop to be one that gives him 5 years or more of good use and is not one that I will have to fix frequently due to poor quality, as for he insists on paying me to maintain his computers and while most people would love to have a high maintenance computer to tap into someones wallet, I can not tap into a friends wallet like that!I will have a look around tomorrow when I have a little more time, posting here to subscribe and remind myself. Off the top of my head, it might be worth looking into HP's Probook or Elitebook lines, they're well built machines but off the top of my head I have no idea how they compare in terms of specification, I don't keep a close eye on the laptop market and I don't closely follow US pricing either. I'll familiarise myself with them tomorrow though and hopefully post something a little more useful I agree with your direction though, build quality should be the first priority as it doesn't matter how fast the machine is, if it dies or falls to bits after say 2 years it's a false economy and a waste of money. I'd rather have something a little slower (and let's face it, most people will not notice the difference between a modern i3 and an i7 in normal usage) that will last longer. Sometimes, you really do get what you pay for, just not in the ways that you may expect.Alright, I'm just looking around at the minute, here's a few ideas. Dell Latitude E5430 - good build quality, a little expensive if you spec it up with the i5 (which I would recommend) a screen upgrade, better warranty, etc, but could be a good CONTENDER. Don't for the love of [insert deity] buy the RAM upgrade, Dell charges the earth for that, just do it yourself. 14", not the lightest but it's never going to be, because it's not made of paper like most lightweight laptops. The Toshiba R940 (14") and R950 (15") seem OK, but to me they are too pricy for what you get in terms of the CPU, and I wouldn't suggest replacing that yourself to save money on a brand new laptop whereas memory upgrades are USUALLY fine. HP Probook 4540s could be worth a look, that actually happens to be our standard laptop at work right now so I can testify as to their build quality. Comes in right around your budget, too. The 6475 could be worth a look, as could the 4545. I think as a minimum you should ideally look for a quad core, 4GB of RAM, a decent screen, and I was going to say an SSD but they don't even seem to offer that as an option on most laptops, which makes me sad inside. Planning for a laptop to keep for 5 years is a fairly difficult spec, think back to 5 years ago and even the high end systems then are massively outdated, bested by systems costing a fraction of that price. A business class laptop, as I said above, is really a must, for the better build quality, and I would be inclined to look for something with at least a 2 year NBD warranty, otherwise that just says to me they don't have faith in their product. I would certainly not want a laptop the manufacturer only WANTS to support and guarantee working for a single year. Thanks for all the info... And yes the costs for the adding memory to the custom build options are quite costly at the get go. I told my friend that 4GB is plenty for now and we can always upgrade the memory later when the price on memory is cheaper and you will get more memory for your money. I agree with quadcores generally being betterwhen comparing processors of like time period of release dates, but have seen online through benchmark results that its not necessarily how many cores you have, but how powerful the cores are when comparing processors. I seen for example that a Core i3 dual-core outperforms my Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz quadcore. While this is Apples and Oranges in comparison whereas the Athlon II x4 620 is already like 4 years old and the Core i3 is much newer as well as there are drastic differenced between the Core i3 and Athlon II x4 620 core design/features etc, I just wanted to specify this in case anyone else reads this and think that all quadcores are better than dual-core CPUs. Going to check out the Dell and HP you suggested. And as far as the Toshibas, I was hoping that the Tecra's would come with Core i5's for the same price tag of the Core i3 models they have, when other manufacturers are offering Core i5 and Core i7's for equal or less price tag to their slower end Core i3. Of course, I should have been clearer - I meant an equivalent quad core, not just any old quad core. I just feel that a quad will be more future proof, if there is such a thing, than a dual, especially as software is really starting to take advantage of more cores nowadays. Memory prices are likely to rise for the foreseeable future, they have already hit a low and are rising pretty quickly. I don't think they will drop substantially until DDR4 is released and that will only be a temporary drop. That's just my opinion though and I am lacking in the gift of foresight so don't take it as gospel! |

Solve : Windows 7 Imaging - Helpful info from my experience with it to share? |
Answer» Creating a Windows 7 Image is easy, however restoring from it can lead to all sorts of interesting problems! * What they dont tell you are these facts: So in future Windows 7 builds, I am going to use the smallest hard drive available, which I have a 80GB SATA hard drive that hasn't been used in years because its too small for my normal computing needs, but it actually can serve a purpose now to build systems clean using that 80GB hard drive. After Windows 7 has been installed, Drivers installed, Activated with Microsoft, All Security Updates, and All Programs that are part of Default Build .... Create a Windows 7 Image using the built in free image utility off of that 80GB drive to a group of DVD's or to an external hard drive if its greater than 25GB. Then Restore the image to the intended Hard Drive for installation, such as a 1TB hard drive. Then when this is complete, resize my C: partition so that instead of it remaining at 80GB of the 1TB partition with over 900GB of wasted unallocated space, C: partition now consumes all of the unallocated space. * And I will also know, never to try to use that 80GB SATA hard drive as 2nd hard drive or external hard drive in any of the builds that it was used in creating to avoid the UNIQUE ID Signature Collision with other Disks! Very nice report. Will bookmark it. This what I also learned: Quote So in future Windows 7 builds, I am going to use the smallest hard drive available, which I have a 80GB SATA hard drive that hasn't been used iThe advantage of DVD is cost and durability. 50 pack memorex 4.7GB 16X D... $13.99 Amazon, new 80GB DESKTOP INTERNAL SATA ...$12.29 eBay, used Well, the cost is almost the same... Keep a clean HDD and clean underwear in your brief case at all times. That's is why they call it a brief case. Like the hands of lady Macbeth, you can never clean underwear that somebody else wore sufficiently. "Out damned spot, out I say!"This is why I use Macrium Reflect, as it can restore to different sized partitions with no problems unlike some programs. I make image backups to my 2TB, duplicate them to my gf's 500GB, then I can restore them by booting from the rescue CD or by connecting the HDD to a machine with Reflect installed. I probably should've made that clearer but yes, you do need to make a rescue CD. I think the paid version of Reflect has an option to integrate Reflect into the boot options, but I don't know why you would bother as normally when I restore images it's due to upgrading or failing drives, so I wouldn't TRUST something stored on said drive. Booting from a rescue CD is always going to be the best way to restore an image - what I like about Reflect in this respect (ooh, rhyming) is that you have the option to create a minimal Linux based CD, a Windows PE based CD (a huge download), or as of the newest version a PE 4 (Windows 8, and much smaller download) based rescue CD. You can also modify the image to include other programs or drivers to support hardware not natively supported, which is pretty awesome. Also, Reflect prompts you when it starts to create a rescue CD if you haven't already, so it doesn't hide that fact until later like some programs.Requiring a boot disc to start the process is no problem. The best thing out of using Macrium instead of 7's built in imaging would be being able to not have to worry about having to resize partitions after the image is pushed to a larger drive, or having to go through the extra work to install first to a smaller drive or partition to then restore it to a larger drive and have to expand the partition. I like that Macrium seems to be more like Ghost 2003 which I used for years, but Ghost 2003 doesnt work with 7, but in which the image can be pushed to any capacity drive as long as the drive to receive the image can contain the whole contents of say a 12GB image. A long time ago I had to restore a system for a user in the accounting department for my employer and their system was so custom installed that installing fresh and installing and configuring all applications etc would have taken 2 days. I created monthly image backups of the accounting systems ( workstations ) and the one day the CPA's system died. The 80GB IDE hard drive was TOAST with the clunk of death. The image of this CPA's workstation was 26GB in size, and the only spare hard drive I had was a 40GB WD drive. I was able to have them back up and running within about an hour by a 5 minute HDD swap, booting their workstation off of a custom made CD that acted like the Ghost boot floppy that loaded NDIS2 NIC driver and set a static IP 192.168.77.2 for workstation, and I was able to use the system in my office as an image server at 192.168.77.1 to push this 26GB image over the network to their workstation during the lunch period of noon to 1pm to not kill all other users BANDWIDTH, and the image push to the workstation was flawless. No resizing required, just needed to reboot the computer after the Ghost image push and remove my custom CD and the user was back in business. The flexability of Macrium reflect being able to push an image to any size drive that is large enough to take the image is exactly what I like to use!!! As far as the accounting workstations, it was a blessing when we finally got the approval and funding to add a Citrix Client/Server and place the important software on the server side of a quadcore xeon vs a bunch of HP DC5000 SFF Pentium 4 workstations with maxed out RAM and stock CPU squirrel cage cooling fans that sounded like a jet was getting ready to take off when they were running intensive apps and multitasking, and this way any workstation on the domain with the Citrix client installed and user with the proper credentials could access the highly configured software from any location at the companies 7 locations as well as remotely from home. This meant that I no longer had to image those accounting systems on a monthly basis and could use my time more efficiently taking care of other problems and projects in the never ending cycle of projects completed and more thrown my way of user and owners requests for changes.Quote from: Calum on June 18, 2013, 03:55:10 AM This is why I use Macrium Reflect, as it can restore to different sized partitions with no problems unlike some programs.Great program, have abandoned Ghost. You can create 2 types of boot discs: Linux or WinPE You can create boot on various media: CD (DVD not needed) or USB drive. Primary backup drive is USB3.0 WD 1TB My Passport 2.5". Secondary backup drive is USB2.0 WD 320MB My Essentials 2.5" |

Solve : Monitor problems, is it the monitor or graphics driver?? |
Answer» I have been having trouble with my monitor, for a while it would go to sleep and when I'd wake it, it would go black and I'd have to turn it off and turn it back on, it would flash and go back off. I'd continue to turn it off and on until it seemed to "warm up" and then it would stay on. It hasn't done that in a while, but now what it does is when I wake it up from sleep, if I open my mail or a webpage right away, it will go black. If I turn it off and back on, it flashes. If I can get the mail or page to close by trying to place my mouse where the "x" would be to close the page and then turn it off and back on, it will stay on, as long as the page is open, it only flashes. If I wait a bit and don't open anything for a minute or so then I can open whatever and it doesn't go black, it happens only when I wake it from sleep and open something right away. Does this sound like my monitor is going out or is it possibly a graphics card issue? I run Windows 7 and my monitor is an LCD probably 6 to 8 years old.Probably the monitor. LCD and LED displays are cheap these days and have better refresh RATES if you game. I have an old Dell LCD 17" and it blurs when there is motion in games and its the display that is the cause. If you have a spare display or a friend who can LOAN you their display that is the best test. If none are available for testing, then I'd buy a new display. |

Solve : Maximize life of your SSD? |
Answer» http://lifehacker.com/5802838/how-to-maximize-the-life-of-your-ssd Sharing this link that I found helpful. I have 4 SSD's and in 3 of the 4 computers with SSD's I am going to make adjustments tonight when I get out of work. Corrections I need to make: - Move Swap Space pointer back to the HDD's on 2 of my systems. ( * I didnt think it would hurt the SSD's to use their speed for swap space, but the issue is as quoted here which adds "lots" of unnecessary wear. More wear than I realized when I first set them up for their speed advantage over regular HDD's. ) Quote The problem with an SSD is [that] data is written in blocks. A block may be 256KB: 256 * 1000 * 8 binary digits. To change even ONE of these digits, you must rewrite the ENTIRE block. That is to say, your OS sees 1 bit being written, but the SSD wear is equivalent to 256KB being written: a 2.048 MILLION fold difference. - Disable the Page File on my new Windows 7 64-bit system which has 8GB RAM vs having it active on my SSD. ( Just as this article states if you are using 2 or 3 GB of RAM, but not the full 8GB, it might as well be disabled. My new build with games never use over 4GB of RAM yet, so I might as well get rid of the virtual memory which is slower than system RAM and not necessary with this build. ) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On my netbook that is running Windows XP with a 60GB SSD on 1GB RAM with a 1.66Ghz Atom CPU, if I had more RAM, I could try to get by without the swap space, but it would likely pose a serious performance hit to this computer if removed without a memory upgrade. With just 1GB RAM, it runs with around 250mb free memory with page/swap enabled, but if I choke off the swap space to preserve the life of the SSD, it may run out of memory with just 1GB of DDR2. * Maybe the fix here is to install a 2GB memory stick which should be plenty of memory for a netbook running XP Home SP3, and then disable this page file. http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Toshiba-memory/NB+Series/NB205-upgrades.html I am going to check to see if these drives have TRIM and if its enabled as well. I am pretty sure the 2 larger drives have it, but the 2 smaller ones that I bought cheap as refurbs are questionable. SSD Drives are: 90GB OCZ Vertex 3 ( In Win 7 64 bit Gaming system as slave ) 60GB OCZ Agility 3 ( In Win XP Home Netbook, only drive ) 40GB Corsair ($35 refurb drive deal ) ( In Win 7 32 bit Gaming system as a slave ) 30GB OCZ ($30 refurb drive deal ) ( In Win 7 32 bit wife's system for gaming as slave ) They work sweet for fast load times of large games like World of Warcrafts 22GB of bloat. However I know that I am taking a chance on the refurbs I bought as for its like buying 2 used cars at a car dealer with no odometers to know how much wear they have on them. But the price was right for the name brand, so hopefully they will last! My thoughts buying these cheap were that they may have been purchased and returned without any issues mainly because the original customers realized they needed larger capacity than 30 or 40GB. And being recertified as good they would have to relabel and sell them as refurbs maybe... or at least that is my wishfull thinking on the wear on them. Swap space/page file is ideally suited to being on an SSD, moving it back to a mechanical drive is counterproductive. The write amplification you mention when referring to block writes is a worst case scenario, and not as much of a problem as most make out. Good SSDs are rated for a lot more write cycles than the average, or even power user, would use before replacing the drive anyway. If I remember rightly, the venerable Intel X25-M was rated for 10GB of writes per day for 10 years. There's a very INTERESTING thread on Xtremesystems where users have just written data constantly to a variety of SSDs to test their longevity, makes for interesting reading. Also, controller failures are much more likely than a flash failure - not that all SSD controllers are unreliable, some are fantastically reliable and others less so, but a controller failure can happen with no warning and will very rarely be caused by writing too much to the drive, so reducing the writes doesn't necessarily improve the lifespan or reliability of the drive. There's really no need to do any "tweaks" for systems running on SSDs in my opinion - modern drives have TRIM and decent garbage collection which works fine if TRIM doesn't work for some reason, they're rated to take more writes than you'd ever use in the real world, and there's far too much FUD spread around - disappointed to see Lifehacker running this. Their advice is basically - turn off the page file or move it (pointless as mentioned above) disable hibernation (because an SSD makes using it pointless, more than that hibernation will cause damage) move temporary files (also counterproductive) disable search indexing and superfetch (pointless on an SSD but again won't cause damage) and disable defrag (done by default if you run the WEI and the system detects an SSD, because defragging an SSD is pointless). All I do when I set up a system with an SSD is update the firmware of the drive, install the latest SATA drivers, and run the WEI afterwards.I'd have to agree with Calum, I've always just installed the OS on any SSDs and used them without making any other changes and I've never had an SSD go bad (I have them in almost all my MACHINES). I have also heard a lot of bad information about what damages an SSD spread around, my favorite being that running programs or storing files on your SSD is bad and the SSD should only ever store the OS! *facepalm* - Tell that to my SSD-only laptop! Quote I have also heard a lot of bad information about what damages an SSD spread around, my favorite being that running programs or storing files on your SSD is bad and the SSD should only ever store the OS! *facepalm* - Tell that to my SSD-only laptop! Thanks for input on this. I was sort of thinking the same thing about, what about systems that are strictly just running off of SSD's like my netbook that have no good solution to avoid swap space usage on them. Looking at more info online, while I have always found Lifehacker as a source of correct info unless a typo here or there, I am now noticing that the info may have been over-protective of unnecessary wear to SSD's with comments here as well as other google sources. I didn't get around to making any changes last night to any systems like I planned. And will leave them be with the swap space on the SSDs as I have already configured. I did find a piece of software though that was helpful in looking at Drive Stats, Health, and Features called CrystalDiskInfo and its free and works well. And it answered questions about the unknown usage odometer of my SSD's that I bought as refurbs. The info read off the drives controllers were loaded with info such as how many power cycles, hours of operation, temps, total data read/write for SSD's over their lifetime to date, features the drives have such as if the SSDs have TRIM etc, and fortunately all 4 of them have TRIM, as well as it brought to my attention that a health of my new gaming computer build 500GB SATA HDD ( that I carefully extracted out of an old Seagate External ) has 1 reallocated sector which it warned me about. While this is not a major issue since all drives have some space to use when sectors are flagged as bad, this stood out running this software and it warned me in orange vs everything else in green. Also I found out that the 500GB HDD that I installed in my new build only has 8MB Cache and 1700 hours of use, when my prior older gaming systems hard drive is a 500GB SATA with 16MB Cache and over 12,000 hours of use. My SSDs that I bought as refurbs unless they were cleared at the factory of their prior stats they all have less than 1000 hours on each of them, which I can see that many hours being on them of my use. The newest one the 40GB that I got 2 weeks ago only has 84 hours on it which 60 of those hours are probably before I received it as for my new system hasnt been on more than maybe 24 hrs combined with building it, updates, and some gaming. The SSD on my older gaming system with this software showed that this drive which is about 18 months old had already handled 10TB of Reads and 3TB of Writes. A statistic that I didnt think a drive would safe. http://crystalmark.info/software/index-e.html --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also found this info here from DELL concerning their SSD's, which should be about the same for others: http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/solid-state-drive-FAQ.pdf In which one thing that I found rather interesting was this statement in this PDF: Quote 5. Why I might notice a decrease in write performance when I compare a used drive to a new drive?SSD drives are intended for use in environments that perform a majority of reads vs. writes. In order for drives to live up to a specific warranty period, MLC drives will often have an endurance management mechanism built into the drives. If the drive projects that the useful life is going to fall short of its warranty, the drive will use a throttling mechanism to slow down the speed of the writes. And there are 2 things here that I picked up on... #1 Quote SSD drives are intended for use in environments that perform a majority of reads vs. writes. This might be why lifehacker was suggesting to avoid swap/virtual memory on SSD's, however HDD's are going to phase out as a thing of the past as soon as the price decreases and capacity increases to a certain capacity around 512GB - 1TB for the average computer user. #2 Funny and yet interesting that a drive that is driven hard for read/writes will slow down to fail outside of the Warranty Terms! * This kind of statement is one that I was tripped up in reading from DELL. Stating as a FACT that their SSD's under the right conditions of EXCESSIVE wear, a throttling feature enables in stretching the life of a product by slowing down its use ... in order to buy time .... To FAIL Outside of Warranty Terms? WOW!!!! Will be looking into the info on my drives for Wear Leveling. Their statement of 100GB usable in their SSD drive example and 28GB hidden to me seems very generous for replacement of dead cells. And I thought that SSD's shrink when the cells die or maybe this is after all the hidden capacity was used up and no spare cells to go around as in the below quote from the same DELL source. Quote 12. What steps do SSD drives take to limit the likelihood of damaging cells due to excessive writes?Dell uses following methods to avoid damaging flash cells and extend the life of the SSD drive:Crystaldiskinfo is a useful tool, yes, - CrystalDiskMark is also a handy benchmark. On Sandforce based drives (OCZ LE, Vertex 2, Vertex 3, Agility 2, Agility 3, most Corsair Force drives, Sandisk drives, Intel 520, Intel 330, and others) it won't give an accurate RESULT as by default it uses a mixture of compressible and incompressible data. Sandforce drives rely on being able to compress data to get their headline figures, so they recommend the ATTO benchmark instead. Of course, for a real-world comparison, CrystalDiskMark is fine, as not all data is compressible and thus Sandforce drives are not as fast as the numbers suggest. You're correct that Lifehacker is usually a reliable source of info, hence why I'm disappointed they have posted this article which contains some pretty useless information along with some common sense tweaks. The throttling you mention is a "feature" of Sandforce based drives. This doesn't appear on many, if any, drives based on other controllers, but Sandforce drives will slow down the write speed once a certain threshold is passed within a timeframe. 28GB overprovisioning on a 100GB drive is not always the case, it's just an example. Some drives have more than others. It's also possible to set aside a little extra by partitioning the drive and leaving an area entirely unpartitioned - this will then be used for further wear levelling. Not really useful with modern drives except under certain rare circumstances, but possible if you're really paranoid about writing to your drive. Not all SSDs have a buffer to help collect writes together, helping to eliminate write amplification. Some use other tricks for this. It's also possible to do this in software - there's a program called FancyCache I've used before which can use your system RAM as a read/write buffer. It's highly configurable and can also use a drive as a cache for another drive - effectively, a more advanced version of Intel's SRT. This can be handy when you have a drive that's not so great at random I/O (HDD or an old SSD) as it will hold the data in RAM and flush it periodically, turning a series of random 1KB writes into a 1MB sequential write. It's worth taking a look at it as once you get it set up properly it provides quite a speed boost. A full RAMdrive would be faster than FancyCache for, say, loading a game, but a RAMdrive is a more specific tool and thus is better at what it does, but it's not as much of an all rounder, if that makes sense. I used to play Battlefield out of a RAM drive with 5GB/sec read speeds - that destroys any SSD out there.Quote A full RAMdrive would be faster than FancyCache for, say, loading a game, but a RAMdrive is a more specific tool and thus is better at what it does, but it's not as much of an all rounder, if that makes sense. I used to play Battlefield out of a RAM drive with 5GB/sec read speeds - that destroys any SSD out there I have used RAMdrive's before, but my problem is that the games I want to speed up exceed the amount of system RAM as for I cant afford a system with 32GB RAM to use 25GB of it for large MMORPG games. I have used this RAMdisk before and it is REALLY FAST!!! I ran a benchmark on it and it was just insanely fast compared to a HDD as well as SSD having direct access of data from RAM. http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk I actually found this worked really well with a SQL Database that was being populated with data through an automation program I created, it was hammering my hard drive to where the hard drive LED was lit solid as every piece of info was being written to the tables of the database which was causing a write to the drive. I ended up placing this onto a RAMdrive and it KEPT the abuse of the read/writes off of the hard drive and allowed for a final write of the data to the drive in the end. Did this on a system with 3GB HDD and a 1GB RAMdisk.Exactly, there are tons of uses for RAMdisks. Redirect your temp files to it...run a database off it...load a game, or parts of a game, into it...a program named Steam Mover assists greatly by automating the process of moving the files and creating a junction link for them so that the OS and programs don't think the files have moved, this eliminates problems with not being able to find vital files. The largest game I ever played from a RAMdisk was Battlefield BC2, which was around 12GB in size if I remember rightly. When RAM was really cheap, I liked to go overboard on it - now, prices are back up, so I agree it's prohibitively expensive for most people.re: RAM I think it's a trade-off, especially with newr Operating Systems that have features like SuperFetch and the ureadahead daemon (Linux). I notice a huge difference when starting games if the OS "expects" me to start the game; for example, if I play SkyRim after not having played it for a few weeks, it will take noticably longer to load. If I play it frequently, Windows get's the idea and starts to precache parts of the game even when I'm doing something else; the result is that the game starts noticably faster, even if the System has been rebooted since, on account of Windows having that data as part of the stuff it precaches. The more available RAM, the more precaching SuperFetch can do so the more applications and data files are streamlined. I think SuperFetch and the OS caching for Files comes into play for an SSD, too; in particular caching could take place that would streamline multiple write operations into one, meaning that what would be any number of block writes would become one block write. This is/was designed of course for slower magnetic hard drives, but SSDs will gain the benefits as well.Again, SuperFetch, Prefetch, and similar things are halfway houses. FancyCache is like a more advanced, configurable version of SuperFetch, but a RAMdrive far outshines any of those for raw performance, sacrificing flexibility and ease of use. That's not to say they don't work well, they're great at what they're designed for, and certainly offer huge speed boosts over systems not running with SuperFetch or equivalent. I don't think SuperFetch streamlines writes to prevent write amplification, although I can't say for sure - you may well be correct on that.Quote from: Calum on June 15, 2013, 01:37:52 AM I don't think SuperFetch streamlines writes to prevent write amplification, although I can't say for sure - you may well be correct on that. It doesn't, The basic Disk I/O Drivers do that. Unless of course Write Caching is disabled. Thanks for all useful info. Never heard of Steam Mover, so going to look that up now to familiarize myself with that.Quote from: BC_Programmer on June 15, 2013, 11:15:39 AM It doesn't, The basic Disk I/O Drivers do that. Solve : DNS choice? |

Answer» So here's the story. 3 Days ago my wife called me at work to inform me that she cant get out to the internet and netflix is not working on our TV. Instantly I knew it was a DNS issue since we have Vonage VoIP which is set up with a static IP address and port forwarding etc that communicates directly via IP vs DNS resolution. Told my wife to flip a switch that I have my network hardware connected to, to bring it all down and back online again. Problem remained. Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is a method of automatically updating a name server in the Domain Name System (DNS), often in real time, with the active DNS configuration of its configured hostnames, addresses or other information.(see full article for detail.s) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dynamic_DNS If one company has a large Intranet they might want to make it part of a private DNS. Help this is of some help. EDIT: Sorry I can't do better. Please read the Wikipedia article, it was just updated a few days ago.Yes I am just using IPv4 right now, even though router and computers support IPv6. REPLACED my old Linksys router about 2 years ago when I thought IPv6 was going to be implemented sooner than later, but also because the router from 2004 was showing its age and the last flash for it was 2006 and when it comes to security hardware, I'd rather have newer than older. Looking at the links, it appears that the paid DNS are for companies and individuals with web servers by which they want customers to have fast reliable access to through paid DNS RESOLVER services. Is there any benefit to a paid DNS service for a home computer user with no web servers hosted out of ones home? The speed of OpenDNS is fast and free. Just trying to figure out of there is a benefit to a paid DNS for a home user with no web servers requiring Domain Name to IP translations and forwarding. |
