Solve : Where is Documents folder??

Answer»

So I finally got upgraded to a Windows 7 workstation from the dinosour computer we use to have running XP Pro.

On break here I was going to assist someone with a batch file and test it at my end and then I discovered SOMETHING very strange. Hopefully someone here can point out what is going on...

The file I used to find the PATH to my data is TEST1

I can find test1 and open the pdf with no problems. The problem is that the path that it shows to exist at C:\users\qx0t00\Documents does not seem to SHOW up in both windows explorer as well as in command shell. Thinking it may be a hidden folder I then selected to show hidden files/folders... Still not showing up

I attached 2 screenshots to show what I am seeing. I was hoping to navigate to C:\users\qx0t00\Documents\ in order to test a batch file from command shell vs navigating to it through Libraries -> Documents and find it very strange that the file shows up as being pathed to C:\users\qx0t00\Documents and it doesnt show it as existing as a path. So I am scratching my head on this one... This is something I have never seen before so posting it here for someone to clarify where it is hidden?

Attachment #1 shows navigation to the test1.pdf file, and Attachment #2 shows the path in properties of test1.pdf, yet the My Documents / Documents folder is missing from both navigation on C: as well as command shell navigation???

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]All users will see C:\Users\Documents as their Documents Library, and paths pointing to "My Documents" are also changed by desktop.ini to "appear" as the "Documents" folder in Properties. "My Documents" itself is a junction point that redirects to your (Selected) Documents folder. The Actual "My Documents" folder has an ACL that prevents you from actually looking inside it from that hard link.

Solve : The cat strikes again - Plastic Bottle Cap Solution?

Answer»

Not sure if anyone has had this problem before, but it has happened over 3x to me. My one CAT will venture under my desk and step on stuff, and sometimes knock stuff over or turn switches off.

Wife woke me up today to the fact that her computer was not working. But her printer was on. Traced power to computer back to UPS that was not lit with green led. Pushed power button on UPS on and battery backup turned on and computer then turned on. On the dust on the top of the UPS I saw cat foot prints.

Solution was to tape a "dry" water bottle cap over the power button on the APC UPS so if the cat goes back there again, she doesnt shut it off again. I have had to do the same thing with power strips in which I placed a dry soda bottle cap with tape around the rocker switch on the 2 power strips that I have to power lower load devices like desk lamp and computer LCD displays.

So if anyone has pets that like to step on switches and power buttons, a plastic bottle cap and tape works well and is a safe solution.

* Also to mention, when my daughter was like 2 or 3 years old she was attracted like a bug to a light to the glowing power button on my two computer towers. Lost lots of work when I'd walk off to get a water bottle while in deep THOUGHT and C++ programming and I'd COME back to a computer that is powered off. I ended up taping a bottle cap across the face of the computer for a short while until she no longer found the power button tempting to push.

I could have just gone in and changed the properties of what the computer does when the power button is pushed, but there is no way to disable the power off of the main board if the button is HELD in for like 5 seconds. The clear bottle cap glowed and she no longer felt the urge to push the button after a few weeks and finding the TV, DVD, and VCR more fun to push buttons on to explore.I have an Irish Wolfhound...any good tips for him ? ?..... hmmmmm.... Thinking you will have to go with one of Tesla's ideas of wireless power transmission. Your home is basically surrounded in a primary transformer winding and everything internally is powered off of their own secondary windings cordlessly from the extreme EMF's Oh and anything important like computers, hard drives, etc should be surrounded in faraday cages including possibly a faraday outfit of copper woven clothing to avoid any ill health effects of prolonged EMF exposure. Just be sure to change before leaving the house in a BAD storm or you'd be a walking lightning rod in copper mesh woven clothing. Hee...nicely played.

Solve : What do I need for my "smartphone" to listen to my favorite Internet radio??

Answer»

I love "Radio Stotka", it's a radio station that was once "on air", but unfortunately now can be heard only through the means of Internet streaming...

It's URL is: http://82.117.194.13:9040/listen.pls

But, when I OPEN the web browser on my mobile device, and enter this url as http://82.117.194.13:9040/listen.pls, my phone browser offers me only the option to save it as a PLS file. And if I do that, then the browser says that it can't find any available (valid) application in order to start playing it!?

Also, if I open this url as the following address: http://82.117.194.13:9040/ (that is without the "listen.pls" SUFFIX at the end) then I see the "SHOUTcast Admin page" on the Internet in my phone browser. There I have the "Listen" button, and if I click on it -> just the same happens (it offers me the download of the PLS file, not the option to LISTEN to it)

I've even tried to create a "TinyUrl" of the page (that is: http://tinyurl.com/mgcrcof ) but the same happens with it too!

And all of these links DO WORK on my PC computer!

So, what do I need to have on my "smartphone" in order to listen to this Internet stream???

Can someone give me any suggestion for what do I need to "google" for?

Thanks in ADVANCE! Instead of numbers for the URL, try this site:
http://www.streamingthe.net/
Thee a re a numbers of stat use that service.
I believe I found what you want as:
http://www.streamingthe.net/RTV-Radio-Stotka-Novi-Sad/p/12098&player=1#.UcBBGNj3Nrw

That is a lot to type on a smart phone. You might have to BORROW a keyboard.
I will test it soon and let you know if it works, thanks again very much for your swift reply! The original link works on my iPhone, so maybe your "smartphone" needs an app that plays PLS streams for it to be smart enough. No, I am sorry but the streamingthenet link does not work on most phones I have been testing it with.

I have - on the other hand - found the following site: www.yourmuze.fm

This one should work on most phones with WiFi enabled..
So I am testing it now, and I'll let you know about the results soon - I hope.

Thanks for all your support. Yes - www.yourmuze.fm does works, so I THINK I found my answer there

Solve : I have messed up my Outlook 365 viewing?

Answer»

I just purchased a Toshiba Satellite P875-S7102 with Windows 8. There are several difference of course that take getting used to but I have one thing that is DRIVING me crazy. I USE Outlook 365 for work and at some POINT I enlarged my view of Outlook. When I am in Outlook all of my tabs of other internet pages are normal as WELL as the main address bar. I still have all other web pages in a normal size as well as all other program on my laptop. I realize there is a zoom in function to the space bar with used with the Function KEY, however, that just makes it larger. The keyboard is very sensitive as well as the 'mousepad' and I did something by accident to enlarge the page. Is anyone aware of how to fix this? Thanks in advance!

Solve : ASUS TF101- Black screen problem!!!!?

Answer»

Hii

I've had my asus tf101 for about 15 months, and never had a problem with it. Yesterday i realised it wouldn't turn on i thought it had stopped completely but i could vaguely see my background if i shone a LIGHT on the SCREEN. I can see that my touch screen is working, i can hear all the noises and iv tried pulling it apart and reconnecting the cable ( YOUTUBE video steps) and also tried holding the power and low volume key down. But still nothing!!!

Is there anything else i should try? please help

Thanks
AvaaYour backlight or inverter has bitten the dust. I'm not familiar with the internals of the TF101, so I'm unsure if these can be replaced separately or WHETHER the screen as a whole must be replaced. Is it still under warranty?

Solve : Transfer text to mp3 player??

Answer»

Can I somehow transfer my own text to an MP3 player? I have a device with e-book capability and I wondered if I could make text notes using this. The only info I can find refer to music, e-book, or video files. When you plug your mp3 player into a computer using a USB lead you should see it showing up as a drive letter, probably with folders under that drive letter. Some of these probably hold music albums. Possibly the mp3 player already has folders created for music, SPEECH notes, e-books etc. Check this out.

Thanks for interest and reply, ST - what comes up when I connect the device is "Removable disk (E:)" with the option "open folder to view files", and this just shows what's already loaded. I suppose that an e-book download is transmitted, if that's the word, in mp3 format, and I thought that maybe there is some way to convert a typed text computer document in the same way to send to device. Anyway, I think I'll give up on that and try voice recording (another option on my mp3) - that might be the easiest way. Thanks again.Quote from: silkie on July 06, 2013, 12:00:00 PM

Why don't you copy a text file from your computer into there? That's what I was suggesting before.

I have tried a text file - MS Word "rich text format" - and sent that to the device folder, but that is just listed there as a text document. I can't figure out any way of getting it on to my mp3. It's not at all IMPORTANT - I was curious to find out if it could be done. I've tried the voice recorder and spoken the note I wanted and that has worked fine.Quote from: silkie on July 07, 2013, 02:03:23 AM

If it is in the folder, then it is in the mp3 player's file storage. It won't get transformed into an mp3 so you can hear the words. Some mp3 PLAYERS have an e-book feature where you can view the words of a text file on the mp3 player's screen. I thought that was what you wanted to do.
That was what I wanted to do - to see the printed text on my device. Even though the file is listed in the device folder on my pc and both are connected there is no file listed in the e-book function on my player. I'll have a careful look at my User's Manual, I must be doing something wrong.Quote from: silkie on July 07, 2013, 03:10:40 AM

I have a "Coby" mp3 player, a fairly cheap Chinese model, and it will show (plain text) .txt files and maybe certain others I believe. It is possible that your player will not read rich text format files. Also like many others my player has a folder structure on the internal storage - there are top level folders with names like PHOTO, VIDEO, MUSIC, VOICE, TEXT etc and you have to put files directly (or in subfolders) under the right top folder, if not the player may not see them and offer them to you to view or play. So yes, study the manual and any folder structure on the device. Possibly you could tell us the brand and model of your player?
My mp3 player is Kubik Evo 8GB - very neat little device I've had for a couple of weeks and not yet very familiar with. It must be similar to the model you have, with the functions you quoted. Looking at the manual I see that the e-book option supports .txt format text, as you intimated, so I'll try to do something with that.Another thing to think about is that mp3 players have (so to speak) a little brain inside that keeps track of what media files are stored. When I add files to my Coby it needs to update its library before I can view or play them, it does this when you power it on. It detects that files have been added or REMOVED and offers to update the library (you have to select 'Yes' or 'No') but my previous 2 mp3 players did it automatically without asking. Whichever way, each player needs to be disconnected from the computer and powered up from cold otherwise new files are not seen.

[update - I saw your reply - your player and mine look very similar, I wouldn't be surprised if they work very much the same]

From a review I found:

Quote
The player comes with folders for Music, eBooks, Photos and Videos

http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/portable-mp3-player/kubik-evo-8gb/1536784/

The screen is only 160 pixels by 128 so you are not going to see a lot of words at a time, and I can imagine that reading a whole novel would be a pain in the *censored*, but you can have fun trying. There are lots (thousands) of free e-books in text format around, a good place to start is Project Gutenberg.

I read the review you sent the link for, and agree with everything said there. The e-book function is ludicrous with such a small screen (I also had "The Complete Works of Shakespeare"!), but although it has it's faults, it does me very well as I use it exclusively for audiobooks and some radio. I'll keep plugging away until I master the unhelpful controls. Thanks again for your comments.

When is the last time you did regular maintenance on this PC such as diskclean defrag and Malware scans ? ?You opened Task Manager and saw 100% CPU usage, right? So, exactly what process(es) was using CPU resources? Task Manager shows the % for each process. @Patio
I Did a disk clean about a week ago.
This problem happen out of no where and I haven't defraged my PC since like a month ago but there was a setting where you set the time and DAY you wanted to defrag and its set on everyday at 4:00 pm
Malware I haven't scan for yet@soybean
It was a process called WmiPrvSE.exe and the description said WMI Provider host

I read online that this is important and of you try to delete this it will just reappear
But in didnt know that so I deleted it and my CPU usage started going down and it reappeared back where all the processes are.
And quick question for @soybean & @Patio. When the High CPU problem happened I had MALWAREBYTES and it said it was outdated so I NEEDED to update it and when I did A blue screen appeared and it said something about a device driver attempting to corrupt has been caught.
A faulty driver currently on te kernel stack must be replaced with a working

@s375
Ill see if this helps
Thanks (:Ok I read online how to fix the problem I think.
I went to start
Search run on start search
Put msconfig ( something like that)
And when to startup and click disabled all
Then I restarted my PC and the WmiPrvSE.exe processes dosent use alot of CPU Usage anymore but whenever i start my PC the CPU Usage starts at 100% then lowers back to below 50% CPU Usage
But even since its slow my PC still goes slow.
Also whenever I run Disk Cleanup it never used to use so my CPU usage and now it does.

Solve : Computer knowledge?

Answer»

I have a few questions that I could not find any answers for anywhere else(google) Hope you guys can help since I have an assignment Im already done with, but trying to add a little more to it.

*1*What advantage do Field-buses gain by using Ethernet
Ive read about it in a book but its a school book and therefore it doesn't really answer anything important... as usual

*2* I need to set up 3 computers(1 laptop, 2PC/tower) and connect a printer to them and keep it as wireless as possible. I've "bought" 1 Router and 2 USB Adapters(WLAN) to connect to the tower computers. Ive set up all computers with the router and the printer, but I'm trying to understand how the signaling is working out. I believe the computers and the printer send signals to the router and the router returns those signals back to them and if somebody prints something then the router sends a signal from the computer thats printing "something" to the printer and "something" is printer out.
I need to draw a schematic drawing of how it'll all work out, (Attachment), and Im trying to get those extra POINTS so need to know if my thinking of how the signaling is sent and received is wrong or right .

You wouldn't be doing my homework for me, its already done just trying to get some extra points and understanding/knowledge while I'm at it

Thanks in advance

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fieldbus
Quote

Fieldbus is the name of a family of industrial computer network protocols used for real-time distributed CONTROL, standardized as IEC 61158.

A complex automated industrial system — such as manufacturing assembly line — usually needs an organized hierarchy of controller systems to function. In this hierarchy there is usually a Human Machine Interface (HMI) at the top, where an operator can monitor or operate the system. This is typically linked to a MIDDLE layer of programmable logic CONTROLLERS (PLC) via a non-time-critical communications system (e.g. Ethernet). At the bottom of the control chain is the fieldbus that links the PLCs to the components that actually do the work, such as sensors, actuators, electric motors, console lights, switches, valves and contactors.
The above article compares different networks.

Second question. All devices can communicate with the router using just wireless. The first time the printer is set up, a hard wire USB connection may be needed to give the printer permission to join the wireless. Alright
Thanks for your quick answer

Solve : Software Suggestions ... to improve skills with electric guitar?

Answer»

I bought a Black Ibanez GRG150 as seen here from a local dealer: http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/GRG150BKN?utm_source=Google&utm_medium=PPC&utm_campaign=none&device=c&network=g&matchtype=&gclid=CKrVvebvxbYCFQtyQgod0xUAcQ

And a Roland Cube 40XL Amp as seen here: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Roland-CUBE-40XL-40W-1x10-Guitar-Combo-Amp-106501562-i1660086.gc?source=4WWRWXGP&kpid=106501562

As well as a nice HIGH quality headset that is comfortable for hours of jamming and perfecting my skills as well as cable so I can line-in from my amp to my netbook to record and edit recordings using a Unlicensed Trial Version of Wavepad Sound Editor Masters Edition which is free to use for home use from http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/index.html

Looking for any low cost or free software that can help me brush up on my skills that may be able to sample what I am playing against what i should be playing and tell me if I get the sound just right or not. Sort of like a guitar hero, but playing a REAL GUITAR VS just mashing buttons as the video game has you do.

I have seen tuner apps that for example tell you if the strings are tensioned/tuned correctly and was thinking there has to be a software out there that can run you through a process like the game simon, but instead of 4 colors to match it starts off with say 1 note, then 2 notes, and if you get it correct it moves on to 3 notes etc, and if not correct you have to REPEAT it, and based on how many attempts were made to try to perfect the notes the software will either move on to the next more complicated or have you play it once again to make sure you nailed it and are ready to move on.

Also Looking for any other software suggestions that people have for sound recording, editing, as well as tutorials.

Pretty much use to jam with my friends electric guitar like 20 years ago, and I have had the urge to get one for a few years and recent tax return made it possible to spend $600 ( guitar, amp, guitar BAG, and all accessories including a tuner which I later found out that the amp has a built in tuner function). Hooked it all up and even with the 20 year gap in playing its like riding a bicycle you never forget once learned, BUT! I know that I need to really work at it if I want to play anything good vs the slow easy stuff with lots of repetition and slow string/finger manipulations.

I brought it home and set it up in another part of the house and started jamming with it and my wife ran to the noise and said, " Are you having a midlife crisis!!!? " I was like NO!...LOL ... I always wanted this but never had the money to get it all until now, so even though I am 37 going on 38. Its not a midlife crisis, I just want to jam on my own and have fun with it..LOL She thinks I am going to grow my hair long again like it use to be 8 years ago and play in a band... I laughed and said I doubt that will be happening to me, as for my intentions are mainly for the fun of it, not to make any money playing it. You're in denial...
It is a mid-life crisis....
Go buy a Harley before she gives up and moves out.... LOLLLLLL

Solve : 'Index of'?

Answer»

Hi there,
I hope you will be able to help me! A friend was using my computer now it won't connect to the Internet! I have been making a web page using joomla with xampp! So today I logon to the Internet to bring up my search ENGINE and hotmail and both pages show 'my index' and list the web page that I have been working on almost like I've typed in admin to get into the back!
I have turned my xampp off but now it just says Internet can't connect when I run a diagnoses it says 'the remote device or resource won't accept the connection' if I turn my xampp back on any page and try to go into ie google the tab says 'index of' and shows the website list! Im really not sure what my friend has done but any help would be greatly appreciated - I am a novice.
MANY thanks
ClaireUnless they configured your browser to connect through the xampp as if it was a proxy etc, you should be able to connect to say www.google.com and get there.

To help you further, what OS are you using and Version and what browser and browser version if you know that as well?Reference:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XAMPP

XAMP is a server with SQL and PHP and some other stuff.

Let's assume the OP is talking about the Windows version.

XAMP is an item for web developers and/or network administrators. The average user would have little need for this heavy duty developer tool.

IMHO, most users would be better off using a dual-boot Windows and Linux. The Linux can be a server and there would be little need for XAMP. That would preserve the Windows system. One would boot into Linux only when a server is needed for a project.

However, I have not used XAMP, so I do not know what, if any, harm nit could do to Windows. Quote

However, I have not used XAMP, so I do not know what, if any, harm nit could do to Windows.
None whatsoever that I've ever experienced. If you (or someone at another computer) don't TYPE your hostname or IP address (or 'localhost' if you're local) into the browser's URL bar to access your computer, XAMPP won't even act like it exists. Having everything redirect to localhost suggests a proxy issue, hosts file issue, or any other cause that could just as easily have nothing to do with XAMPP.

@OP: I'd just ask your friend what he did. If he doesn't remember or won't tell you, check your proxy servers like DaveLembke suggested and also check to see if something's WEIRD in your hosts file. Any troubleshooting that has to do with all traffic being redirected to one website should apply equally here. Anything specific to localhost redirection would help too, but I highly doubt it's an XAMPP-specific problem.TechnoGeek, Thanks for the correction.
Yes, he needs to find out what else his friend did.

Solve : Standard 5.25 Mic to USB Adapter?

Answer»

Basically, I'm trying to make a USB Adapter for a standard 5.25 Mic. I don't really have funds to just get a USB Mic. However, I think that there are enough parts here that I can save an build an apater. I got a USB Cable, Jacks but, I probably can't just wire a jack too the USB Cable. Why do you want a USB mic? What about one that connects to a regular 3.5mm connector? I believe they generally cost much less than USB mics. 3.5mm mics can be very inexpensive. I am an electronics technician ... You wont be able to make a working USB MIC by just wiring a MIC to 4 USB wires, you need electronics with an amplifier with Analog to Digital Converter and ability to pass the audio digitally through the USB communications as well as a driver that will handle this. This is not something that is easily accomplished through a simple solder job and electrical tape!

If a 3.5mm MIC jack is not available and you really want to connect via USB, my suggestion would be to buy a USB Audio Adapter for around $8 to $20 (USD) that acts like a USB Sound Card, and plug MIC into that adapters 3.5mm jack. Here is an example of one model that I bought INEXPENSIVELY: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812186035

I have bought a few of these of Startech and Syba brand and they work well, however I haven't used them for studio recording quality, I have only used them for voice communications with ventrillo and online games to communicate by voice with other gaming group members. If you want highest quality, I assume you have a high quality MIC and would probably want to invest into a higher end audio card that installs internally to the computer.Quote from: DaveLembke on April 11, 2013, 02:58:59 PM

If you want highest quality, I assume you have a high quality MIC and would probably want to invest into a higher end audio card that installs internally to the computer.

So is my dad thats why I indicated that I have the probabole parts needed. Cause, I need it for game playing not audio recording :/ I figured I may need an amplifier board.

I may look into that but, I didnt want to have too buy like a whole bunch of stuff. Guitar Hero an Rock Band just don't like not haveing a mic :/

I am famiular with those brands and find them to be okay an more of newegg's lower ended stuff. Quote

Cool that he is also an ET, but its far cheaper and far less time involved to buy one of these than it is to create your own. Even if you are able to get the parts needed and come in at less than $8 which I estimate that parts alone unless you can buy through a source that gets volume discount will go beyond $8. Plus you will have to hand solder all the many connections and hand soldering surface mount chips takes a lot of skill and precision not to stress the component with the heat running up the components legs and end up with a solder bridge when the flux primes the legs and the molten solder quickly flows and bridges them.. ( BEEN THERE myself and having to solder wick the bridge away without damaging the chip and the PCB ).

After all of this is done. Many hours invested in making this device, you then need it to be supported by the system with a driver. I am not aware of any open source or generic drivers to pair up with USB Analog/Digital Audio communications to make it work for your project.

If my child approached me as an ET, to make this device, I'd just buy the $8 adapter and be done with it. If my child approached me wanting to make something that doesn't already or affordably exist that is a must have, I'd take the project on if its one that wont cost too much time and money.

Fortunately the only request I have had so far was my 8 yr old daughter wanting her own computer and wanted it to be HELLO Kitty theme,... I said thats easy, lets go shopping! So I took a old late 1990's beige steel case computer tower I already had and spray painted it hot pink with all the boards, drives etc removed, and bought her a bunch of Hello Kitty stickers to affix to it after I stuffed an old but still powerful enough Pentium 4 HT 2.8Ghz motherboard into it with 1GB RAM and a GeForce 6200 8x AGP video card for her gaming (Angry BIRDS and World of Warcraft Starter Edition FREE) and web SURFING ( mainly youtube music videos ) etc. Only problem now is that her friends saw it and they want one just like it... and I cant sell Hello Kitty Computer towers without fear of being sued. So I told the parents that if they want, give me a computer and I will spray paint it hot pink and they can add their own stickers etc that make it Hello Kitty Theme..LOL Doesn't matter what your Dad does or how many spare parts are lying around the radio station...fact is it's a waste of time to do it.

Yeah, He has a degree in it too. Yeah, to make the converter probably be the longest too do. Yeah, I dont really have a good iron like I did have right now but, he has a fine tipped iron that I could use. You can get adapters for those?

Thats pertty sweet. You could of done a BIT more too it depending on the OS.

It's unclear what you are asking for.its chapter HOME work but, Im not getting the outlook todays stuff when I click on my email address etherSince you're working on a chapter exercise in the text book, the answer to your question can very likely be found somewhere in the chapter. Sometimes, finding a SOLUTION in a textbook takes more digging than at other times.

Does the textbook come with a CD? Is this an online class? If so, is a discussion board provided for students to interact with each other, and perhaps with the instructor?Yeah, the chapter dont say anything about it THOUGH an it just mentions about it on two little pages. Nope. Online. Yes, however, its near the end of the term we dont use a dissicussion board much if at all and I have till Monday MoringQuote from: Ryuk on April 18, 2013, 07:52:33 AM

Solve : Phone Call Came Through Comp Speaker?

Answer» My first question is what happened to my question? Why is it not in the list? I am henceforth asking it again because I want to KOW why my phone call was coming through my computer speaker.

I don't have a phone mic or any comp accoutrement and my phone 'hands free' was off.

I
Wasn't this already posted?
A standard modem has a small speaker used to monitor the connection until synchronization is squired. During that time period it amplifies anything on the phone line. Did you have the phone handset off hook?

Hi, and yes the topic was posted, however I never received notification of any replies. Today when I came in to post about something else I noticed the question wasn't in the forum queue so I reposted it.

The answer to the question you asked is yes. I was on the phone talking through the handset for a few minutes then suddenly I heard my convo coming through the monitor or speaker. Anyway, it's NEER happened before and I just wanted to know why it happened now. My mom even heard the echoing sounds of my voice. But it lasted only a minute or two.

So now, I wasn't being lojacked, it was simply a computer modem type thing?

Thanks!
Maybe you modem was set to answer on ring. You voice may have tripped the modem answer circuit and it initialed a connection. Or maybe nit is broke and COMES one randomly. On maybe somebody pulled a prank on you."...somebody pulled a prank on you"

What does that mean? Rather how would they do that? Are you suggesting I've been hacked and my ID compromised?

Let me ask you because I'm not a comp geek in the least. Can anyone place TRACKER on your comp esp someone hwho works in government communications, like a troubleshooter with phone calls and such? I really never got the gist of what he does. Except he works for G'ment.
Your original thread is still there but has been moved down the list.

Anyway, here's my original reply:
---
It's been a long time since I used a dial-up modem but I do remember occasionally having this happen when trying to dial in when someone was on the phone.

It's nothing to worry about - It's just like when you pick up the phone when the computer is connected and you hear the modem down the phone line, exactly the same but instead of hearing the computer through the phone you are hearing the phone through the computer.

So it's not any sort of tracking/spying, all I can assume is that for some reason when you were on the phone your modem flipped on and tried to connect, possibly DUE to something running on the PC trying to connect to the internet.Okay camerongray... I don't know what it is with the phones in my home they all seem to work when the want. Maybe it has to do with being connected to the comp. I appreciate the help from both of you and would hate to think my friend is tracking me.

About the OP I went down the list at least 2 weeks and didn't see it. Sorry for the double post. HAGO...
When I said prank, I was thinking of someone in your house.
If they could get into your computer they could schedule the modem to start at a later time. Like two minuets later, 'nuff time to go hide.

CH does not endorse such pranks..... No, that's not the case! But thanks for allaying my concerns.

Obama defends NSA surveillance: 'Nobody is listening to your phonecalls'
By Charlie Osborne for Zero Day | June 10, 2013 ZDNet
On Friday, the U.S. president told reporters at Silicon Valley that the program, supervised by federal judges and authorized by Congress, is not about "listening to your telephone calls." Although the NSA can keep tabs on Americans' phone and Internet records, Obama said the correct "balance" has been kept between Big Brother-like spying and maintaining national security.

I got dis info while i was getting info about android and i chk it from http://catchupdates.com/android-is-the-most-vulnerable-to-malware/

Please do replyThe question about which thing gets more virus has been talked abut a lot. Basically, it comes down to the popularity of something and the efforts the user makes to defend himself. More popular devices and APPS get more virus because they are big targets.
Google is working on making Android even better, including new security features. But then so are Apple and Microsoft.thnnxxxxx

Solve : smf? What does it take to run something like this??

Answer»

Hello and thanks for visiting my thread.

What do you need to run a FORUM.?
Internet? The SMF download and ? ( other than a lot of spare time to spend on it like Nathan ).

I read a post TODAY and in the post was a link to smf. ( I just cant find the post now. ) Most likely from BC_Programmer, Quaxo, Calum, Geek-9pm, or it might have been Allan maybe Nathan.

Anyway I went to smf for a look as a result of the link and got to thinking (as above).

Do you need to be a programmer or have heaps of bandwidth or a large internet account or can I just run one from my tiny 50 Gb account from the loungeroom?

Just curious. ImnoGuru. There's a link to SMF at the bottom of every page...Quote from: ImnoGuru on June 29, 2013, 07:26:38 AM

Just curious. ImnoGuru.

You need a Web Server.

Usually, a web server would be run by somebody else, and you either pay for shared or dedicated hosting. My website is on a server which I've never seen, and is a shared hosting account on that machine. I pay a monthly fee to "rent" that shared hosting, and the hosting service is responsible for it staying up.

It that case, the hosting provider provides everything that was needed. SMF is written in PHP and therefore the system it runs on requires a PHP interpreter. Most systems are "LAMP" stack hosts, which means they typically run a Linux variant as the Operating System, Apache as the web server, MySQL for the database, and PHP as the main server scripting language. SMF uses MySQL and PHP and installing it on a lamp server is as simple as untarring/unzipping the provided SMF scripts onto the server, then running through the configuration by navigating to that site.

Yes. Thanks patio, I did see that, perhaps even before today. (in fact most definitely ).

Seeing something like that though doesnt always mean that I've "seen" it. (as in I had an understanding of what that actually means or does. )

I was going to post in the question that I have seen it on the bottom of each page, but never had the interest to persue the link.
I suppose you might call it my AH-ha moment.

BC_Programmer thank you too. Would someone like Go-Daddy be the provider, they "keep" it on their server & I access the program to edit things as I want them.

So basically, I need to know a lot of stuff!

PHP, then edit things in something like Filezilla, upload it to the server & test its FUNCTIONALITY.

and I have to learn code of some sort to find errors? Hmmm... am I young enough to learn how to do all of this do you think?

Is there a novice version of this? Hahahaha.

I had been thinking of starting my own website to sell "stuff" (not Feebay), but I've only had a limited exposure to this sort of thing.

GoDaddy.com is a popular domain name registrar. In other words, you can you them to register a web address that's you'd like to have for your website/forum. Of course, the web address, or domain name, must be available, meaning not already taken by someone else.

In addition to domain name registration, you need an account with a web hosting service, as BC_Programmer mentioned. GoDaddy.com does provide hosting service, in addition to domain name registration, or you can choose among scores of independent hosting services. Here's one list: The Top 10 Web Hosting Companies of 2013, but there are many more if you care to search.

Most hosting services make installation of a forum on a website easy, although it may not be an SMF forum. This can usually be done via a Control Panel, or cPanel, that can be accessed via web browser once you've created an account with them. No programming knowledge is required to do this. But, you will need to learn how the administrative panel of the forum WORKS so that you can create your major topic sections in the forum and perform numerous administrative tasks.

Solve : computer terminology, please help?

Answer»

I am doing some work for my computer CLASS, and I'm stuck on some questions and can't seem to get past them. If ANYONE could help me out with, I'm sure some good karma would come your way.

Don't worry about the numbers, they are here to help me.
9. A type of DEVICE that a computer uses to receive information from.
12. The peripherals plug into this unit.
14. The type of computer that fits on or under an individual desktop and that stores its own information.

These have me stumped, if someone, anyone can help. I would be very much appreciative.9) Input Device

12) Motherboard.

14) Is nebulous but i would say Desktop/personal PC.

Let us know what our Final grade is.I won't know the grade for another week, but I will hand out the grade for yah, hahah!Did your teacher give you a textbook?
Some grades are about using the textbook for answers.
12. could have bean "External Port"As smart as we all are we can only get 3 out of a possible 14 according to these numbers.

Wouldn't another possibility for 9 be a hard drive or maybe a wifi?

Solve : Messed my keyboard up?

Answer»

Hey, everybody. I accidentally knocked my laptop off my ottoman and now the "enter" key doesn't work. That's why I'm typing this as one long paragraph. Everytime I hit "enter" a little popup screen COMES up that says hardware and sound>power OPTIONS>edit plan settings. Is there a way to change the enter button back to enter? Thanks.Thinking you will have to replace the keyboard which is damaged. Never heard of a computer getting a macro mapping to launching that via enter key.

One test I would perform to make sure its the keyboard and not a strange macro mapping created during the fall is to attach a USB keyboard to this laptop and see if the Enter key behaves on the computer or if it also triggers this ISSUE. USB keyboards can be picked up pretty CHEAP at say Walmart for like $12.88 etc.

If it behaves with a USB attached keyboard then you are looking at replacing the laptop keyboard or running the laptop with this desktop computer keyboard instead.OK. The plug in keyboard didn't work, either. I guess I'll call Staples tomorrow. Thanks.OK. I'm officially confused. All of a sudden, it's working again.

Glad its working again... Maybe the computer was scared of Staples and decided to cooperate with you. It was upset for being knocked off and decided to give you attitude until the threat of going back to Staples was mentioned..LOL

I'd test all your keys with notepad or a new word document open and VERIFY that they all behave and none stick etc.

Solve : HP Online Chat ... Is it me or does this guy seem like HP wont match Toshiba?

Answer»

Is it me or does the highlighted line in this HP chat seem not very competetive to get my business. I took this as that HP never offers free shipping through their online store and its ALWAYS going to come at a cost to me the customer. Toshiba is offering FREE shipping until 7/15/2013. Which to me this seems like HP may not match that without having to go through the extra effort to call experts.

My jaw kind of dropped when I got this response in this chat and I kind of laughed...never had an online chat go this path where it seemed like such a tall request to match Toshiba and kind of rude to the matter of HP will NEVER over free shipping on online orders is how I took it.

Quote

A Chat Agent will be right with you.

You are connected with HP's Chat SERVICE. My name is Harry. How may I help you today?

Harry: Welcome to HP Chat, please tell me the nature of your visit to chat today? (ie: technical support, pre-sales question, purchase, or quote)

you: Looking at the HP Probook 4540s for a client... is the Downgrade to Windows 7 free or additional fee? Some laptop manufacturers are charging for laptops downgraded to 7 64-bit

Harry: Hi!

Harry: No, it is not going to cost.

Harry: Windows 7 Professional 64 (available through downgrade rights from Windows 8 Pro)”. This means that you'll get Windows 7 pre-installed from the factory, and it will include the disc and license for Windows 8 Pro in the box that you can use to upgrade to Windows 8 Pro

you: ok great... last question is if my client who is in the USA is to buy a laptop off the website is free ground shipping available similar to what Toshiba is offering. He was also looking at the Toshiba Tecra SERIES which offers free shipping

Harry: If he needs free shiipping then he needs to contact our experts directly.

Harry: Because online purchase is always going to cost you shipping fees.

you: oh ok... is there a contact number available for experts?

Harry: Our SMB Inbound sales team can be reached at 866-625-0242 Option #2.

you: ok THANK you for your help... have a great day
In my experience it's worth giving them a call rather than going through the online chat. Each vendor is different, sometimes the online chat is better, but with them not being particularly helpful I would be inclined to call.
We don't DEAL with HP directly, we use a distributor for our IT, not to mention we're in different countries, so I can't really tell you from experience whether they're likely to offer free shipping or not. Worth a phone call though remember you'll be calling a sales team, not tech support, so you're less likely to get put through to India/Pakistan/Timbuktu.
A tip, just make it clear that if they're not competitive they will lose the sale to a competitor. It really will depend on their targets, figures, and a hundred other things, but you may well be able to negotiate a discount and/or free shipping.

Solve : Any suggestions... Friend is looking for new laptop with a budget of $700?

Answer»

A friend of mine contacted me looking for a computer that he will get 5+ years out of with everyday computer use. He is not a gamer so he can get by on integrated video. He e-mailed me with these 2 models that he was looking at when I suggested Toshiba. He doesnt have to buy a Toshiba brand LAPTOP so any other good name brands/make/models that come to mind feel free to share.

His only requirements are that the computer has at least 4GB RAM and is running Windows 7 64-bit or can be easily downgraded to Windows 7 64-bit since he doesnt like Windows 8 from the models he tried out in the stores.

These 2 models below he e-mailed me that he liked and was wondering if they could easily be downgraded to Windows 7 64-bit and stay within budget of $700 or less.

The core i3 tecra was configured here: http://www.toshibadirect.com/td/b2c/cdetland.to?poid=2000045900

*There was a Core i3 that was 100Mhz faster for $50 more but that seemed like a waste of $50, and the Core i5 which I would have liked to get him as a CPU puts him over budget with a price tag of $789.99 with the +$150 to add this CPU instead of the default Core i3

Looking at the 2 laptops he sent me asking for suggestions, the AMD quadcore running 1.5Ghz I have this strong feeling that it will act like all other computers that operate below 2Ghz which lag, even though it has 4 cores as well as it will become too slow for multitasking use if not now, definately before 5 years expected use is met.

With the Core i7 which looked like the perfect laptop for him at first, the drawback is that the battery is internal, and not user replaceable! This is the very first laptop I have ever come across in which the battery was not easily removable. Thinking back at the many times in which removing a PC battery and reconnecting the battery fixed a hung laptop, on this model that is not an option without splitting the case open which is a very stupid intended design feature!

Before I try to sell him on the idea to go with the Core i3 Tecra, I figured I'd get input from others. Maybe there are better deals out there for a laptop with good reviews, low tech maintenance to hold up to heavy data entry and multitasking, and one that either comes brand new with Windows 7 64-bit or can be downgraded to Windows 7 64-bit and still be within budget?

I already know that trying to tell him to go with the Core i3 over the Core i7 laptop is going to feel like reverse logic to him, but the way I see it, it looks like they are trying to use the Core i7 CPU to sell low quality guts that surround that better performing CPU....

I dont want to suggest a laptop that will be a lemon, so I am trying to get him the best performance and quality for his money hardware wise as well as Windows 7 downgrade option at the get go. I want this laptop to be one that gives him 5 years or more of good use and is not one that I will have to fix frequently due to poor quality, as for he insists on paying me to maintain his computers and while most people would love to have a high maintenance computer to tap into someones wallet, I can not tap into a friends wallet like that!I will have a look around tomorrow when I have a little more time, posting here to subscribe and remind myself.
Off the top of my head, it might be worth looking into HP's Probook or Elitebook lines, they're well built machines but off the top of my head I have no idea how they compare in terms of specification, I don't keep a close eye on the laptop market and I don't closely follow US pricing either. I'll familiarise myself with them tomorrow though and hopefully post something a little more useful
I agree with your direction though, build quality should be the first priority as it doesn't matter how fast the machine is, if it dies or falls to bits after say 2 years it's a false economy and a waste of money. I'd rather have something a little slower (and let's face it, most people will not notice the difference between a modern i3 and an i7 in normal usage) that will last longer. Sometimes, you really do get what you pay for, just not in the ways that you may expect.Alright, I'm just looking around at the minute, here's a few ideas.
Dell Latitude E5430 - good build quality, a little expensive if you spec it up with the i5 (which I would recommend) a screen upgrade, better warranty, etc, but could be a good CONTENDER. Don't for the love of [insert deity] buy the RAM upgrade, Dell charges the earth for that, just do it yourself. 14", not the lightest but it's never going to be, because it's not made of paper like most lightweight laptops.
The Toshiba R940 (14") and R950 (15") seem OK, but to me they are too pricy for what you get in terms of the CPU, and I wouldn't suggest replacing that yourself to save money on a brand new laptop whereas memory upgrades are USUALLY fine.
HP Probook 4540s could be worth a look, that actually happens to be our standard laptop at work right now so I can testify as to their build quality. Comes in right around your budget, too. The 6475 could be worth a look, as could the 4545.

I think as a minimum you should ideally look for a quad core, 4GB of RAM, a decent screen, and I was going to say an SSD but they don't even seem to offer that as an option on most laptops, which makes me sad inside. Planning for a laptop to keep for 5 years is a fairly difficult spec, think back to 5 years ago and even the high end systems then are massively outdated, bested by systems costing a fraction of that price. A business class laptop, as I said above, is really a must, for the better build quality, and I would be inclined to look for something with at least a 2 year NBD warranty, otherwise that just says to me they don't have faith in their product. I would certainly not want a laptop the manufacturer only WANTS to support and guarantee working for a single year. Thanks for all the info...

And yes the costs for the adding memory to the custom build options are quite costly at the get go. I told my friend that 4GB is plenty for now and we can always upgrade the memory later when the price on memory is cheaper and you will get more memory for your money.

I agree with quadcores generally being betterwhen comparing processors of like time period of release dates, but have seen online through benchmark results that its not necessarily how many cores you have, but how powerful the cores are when comparing processors. I seen for example that a Core i3 dual-core outperforms my Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz quadcore. While this is Apples and Oranges in comparison whereas the Athlon II x4 620 is already like 4 years old and the Core i3 is much newer as well as there are drastic differenced between the Core i3 and Athlon II x4 620 core design/features etc, I just wanted to specify this in case anyone else reads this and think that all quadcores are better than dual-core CPUs.

Going to check out the Dell and HP you suggested. And as far as the Toshibas, I was hoping that the Tecra's would come with Core i5's for the same price tag of the Core i3 models they have, when other manufacturers are offering Core i5 and Core i7's for equal or less price tag to their slower end Core i3.

Of course, I should have been clearer - I meant an equivalent quad core, not just any old quad core. I just feel that a quad will be more future proof, if there is such a thing, than a dual, especially as software is really starting to take advantage of more cores nowadays.
Memory prices are likely to rise for the foreseeable future, they have already hit a low and are rising pretty quickly. I don't think they will drop substantially until DDR4 is released and that will only be a temporary drop. That's just my opinion though and I am lacking in the gift of foresight so don't take it as gospel!

??It's called sliderdock...and as with any addon 3rd party app that customises Windows it's garbage...
Your best move would be to un-install it completely.I wanted it for my .hack theme but, it seems like other programs do this too. It seems like it will run then you get the close non responce window is what I mentIf you are messing with the Win GUI...whether it's your own experiment or a 3rd party app then your on your own...
Through all the years i have seen these apps come and go with every Win version and they ALL cause issues with the PC running properly...
So it's up to you.Yes, I am aware of that but, I don't know why even if its not that but, another application that happensI'll bet you a cold Pint that if you un-install it properly the other app crashes will cease...cold pint of what? I'm useing the windows program uninstaller to uninstall itGuinness is my personal preference...the world record book? Whats that have to do with this?No...that would be the Pint...

Solve : Wifi radiation ???

Answer»

i had some one telling me about how there router emmits dangerous levels of radiation,
im a bit sceptical about this, i know that wireless routers usaly run from 2.4ghz radio waves,
i have LOOKED a little bit in to this and its not radiowave its microwave on a simallar wave length as a microwave oven
so the reason for my post is how dangerous is this level of "radiation" and if it was dangerous wouldent it have a RADIOACTIVE warnign on them ?

Tin foil hat should do the trick...

"Microwaves" are "radio waves".
This is gotta be really SERIOUS problems..I agree that its quite a lot right now that this "radiation" issues are everywhere especially from the things that we are using from kitchen, phones, gadgets and even household equipments. I heard that in Singapore there is a high percentage of radiation becuase of they are highly expose to this technology stuff, that will certainly cost a lot of major HEALTH problems.

Solve : FTP access via MAC Address??

Answer»

Hope some one can help me out, I have a digital signage unit that use simple file networking. This lets the unit fetch new content from an FTP server I believe, but the catch is it has to be setup with an anonymous login with out password... not very SAFE. So what I would like to find out, is it a possibility to set up an FTP server with an anonymous login along with a MAC address control, kinda like you can do with an open wireless NETWORK?

Look forward your help,

ChandlerThe problem would be that the mac address is non transferrable and the MAC address sensed would only be devices that connect locally to the router, and it is sensed on the switch side of the router and not the service port to the modem. If you were able to sense on the internet service port that the modem connects to, you will only be able to sense the mac address of that of the modem and no further.

If you had a computer CONNECTED to the digital signage unit that gets updated from another system, thats your best bet.

I set up a similar, dedicated computer setup to be able to edit a very old phone system that required a modem / serial connection to edit parameters. Some people USED Serial to Ethernet Adapters to remote access the old phone system according to the contractor who serviced the unit, which are not the most secure! I chose to put an old Pentium II 266Mhz computer at the site with a Null Cable between the phone system and Com1 of the computer running Windows XP Pro and would RDP into this system to edit the phone system that was old but cost too much to replace.

*The most secure method would be to have a dedicated computer to authenticate with across the web using RDP, GotomyPC, or another service, and then have the insecure connection to the digital signage unit to a 2nd network adapter with a cross over cable. So you would be able to remote to this computer, and send the file across to update the digital signage unit.Cheers for the quick reply! I have already done the trick with have a computer sitting with the unit, I just wanted to avoid have to take both the unit and a computer, as it is a rental unit, which does a lot of travelling. Oh well for now it seems like that is what I'll have to do! The annoying THING is, the unit is bt bright sign, and along with the simple file networking, they have their own remote network, which is password protected. So the unit is able to, but they have written the firmware to only make their paid for network safe

Solve : New Sony Vaio Battery VGP-BPS22 not charging?

Answer»

Hello All,

I bought a new VGP-BPS22 sony battery 3500 mah/39 wh and it doesnt seem to be charging. I had exactly same battery before I replaced with the new one.

Funny thing is when i put the new battery first time it charged till 100% in 1-2 hours of time and then second day onwards it got stuck to max 30% charging and now its not charging at all(Stuck to 0%). Another thing which i noted if I uninstall and install 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant control method battery' from device manager battery seem to charge for 10 seconds and then stop again. Same thing happens at the time of system booting..it charges only for 10 seconds and then it stop.

I have reset BIOS and taken out battery/booting/rebooting system couple of times and it doesnt seem to solve my problem.

I am using window 7 ultimate.

Any help would be great! Is the replacement battery a genuine sony part ( that is, original part# and battery that sony used in these laptops ) - or - a generic battery for the sony that matches your model, but is not original?

*Reason why I ask is because I have seen generic battery replacements cause the internal battery monitoring system to show false information. As well as a battery will show as fully charged and as soon as you unplug the power cord, the battery life shows as only 53% and the run time is lesser than that of an original battery that would charge to 100% and last the full duration of 100% battery charge life.

If this battery is genuine for the sony, I'd send it back for replacement as defective and power the laptop off of wall power and older battery until the next battery arrives. Lithium Cells rarely die on brand new batteries, but it could have happened here, and with 1 cell dead or weak, the other cells are compensating and it will not charge to 100%.I was its original though but i am not buying from sony so cant be sure!

Why did it charge first day and then second day stopped completely? is there anything else i can do to make it work like change some settings.. Where did you buy this battery from ? ?china! I'd return the battery if you can for a refund. I have run into interesting batteries from China before, but not with computer batteries yet.

I found a really good deal on 6volt lantern batteries and bought a BUNCH from China that were shipped to the USA from Hong Kong. Immediately I knew something was wrong because 6volt lantern batteries normally have some weight to them, and this 6 pack for $10 weighed far less than normal lantern batteries. Well we went camping and I used these batteries. Each one lasted about 30 minutes and then was completely dead. Fortunately I had 6 of these and so I was able to burn through them at 30 minutes each to do some night fishing. The following day I busted one of them open to see why they are so light. Just as I suspected there were 4 AAA batteries inside hot glued to the inside compartment with solder and wire making them 1.5v x4 in series for the 6 volts. The problem though was that AAA batteries are lacking in mA/h. I never bought any more batteries through this ebay identity ever again and I left neutral feedback since the batteries worked, but left a note that they only lasted 30 min each.

BUT I did save some MONEY buying replacement battery packs for my Uniden phone system at home that has 3 CORDLESS handsets. The replacement batteries for the cordless phones were $22 each at Bestbuy, $18 each at Wal-mart, and Radio Shack didnt have it in stock but could special order them for $15 each. I ended up finding these batteries from a generic no-name brand on Amazon that were 3.6v and the seller had very good feedback, so I took the chance/risk and bought these for $6 each, so for $18 I had 3 batteries to replace all the batteries that no longer held a charge. $18 for 3 batteries was exactly what I was willing to pay, as for 3 batteries at a total cost of $45 to $66 for a phone system setup that cost $70 new was just stupid! I bought these batteries 2 years ago and they are still working and holding a strong charge when charged. These no-name batteries I could swear last longer than the original Uniden batteries.

Buying generic batteries are hit and miss, sometimes you save a good amount of money and end up with a good deal, and other times you get burned by batteries that are junk. The batteries through the Amazon merchant also came from China and were shipped through Hong Kong.

*The only small very minor issue I had with the cordless phone batteries was that they were just slightly larger/wider in the white plastic shrinkwrap that makes the battery pack than the original batteries, so I had to press firmly with the slide/locking battery COVER to get it to close, but once closed the battery cover has not popped open yet on any of the 3 phones so no problem really!!!Return it then...

Solve : What is Strongvault??

Answer»

Hello -
I am running WINDOWS 7 and IE 9.
While running Super Antispyware a PAGE came up that had "Strongvault" on it. As I read the add it appears to be a free back up. Presently I back up my computer using a disk. I know there are sites you can back up your computer but they cost money. My use of my computer is very simple so I don't need a complicated program. Will "strongvault" do what they CLAIM or is it a site to avoid? Any recommendation will be appreciated. BobIt appears to be a Norton component...however if you got an AD for it it most likely is Malware...
From all i read as well it is a real pain to get rid of once installed.
My personal recommendation would be to stay away...
Others here may have more feedback.patio -
Thanks for your reply. I did not have any trouble deleting "Strongvault" but they said some would have a problem and they gave advice on how to do it. Bob

I need to BUY something on PayPal anonymously, but my account does not have any funds. If I just buy something and let it auto-withdraw from my bank account, it will SHOW the item on my statement (or so I was told). I am doing this as a gift for my mom and I think she reads my bank statements (not sure), but I want to be safe and not have it show up. So I am asking if I can send someone on here a PAYMENT, and then have them send that same amount back to me, so that it will be in my paypal balance, but won't have the item listed on my bank statement.I have Paypal auto-withdraw from my bank as well.

My bank statement (Wells Fargo) is as follows:

Date | PAYPAL INST XFER (Account identification) (Transaction number) NAME | $Amount

I Googled the transaction number, and couldn't find anything.

There isn't any identifying information, other than the fact that it was through Paypal.Quote

Date | PAYPAL INST XFER (Account identification) (Transaction number) NAME | $Amount

NAME doesn't say the name of the item? The account identification might MATTER. I'll have to check.Well, turns out it wouldn't be good to show the account name either, so can you do it?The NAME is the name TIED to the PayPal account. You sure that won't work for your situation? Yes I'm sure.Resolved. Thanks CdO.Glad to help

Solve : Should Iuse a Publifc DNS??

Answer»

I have fixed feelings. I have tried it both ways and still not sure if it even matters.

Some say a service like Open DNS or Google Public DNS can improve lockup speed and HELP PREVENT attacks for hostile web sites.
Here is a short bit:

Before you change your DNS settings to use Google Public DNS, be sure to write down the current server addresses or settings on a piece of paper
...
The Google Public DNS IP addresses (IPv4) are as follows:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

https://developers.google.com/speed/public-dns/docs/using

But why WOULD I want to do this?
I used to think it had some advantage. Is there really?
There is meant to be some performance improvement although I never really intentionally change the settings myself as my ISP's DNS servers work well.

I do have a few machines that use them for the simple reason that they have static IPs and it's easier to remember "8.8.8.8" and "8.8.4.4" instead of my ISP's IPs!

OpenDNS is a bit different as it gives a lot of control - I've implemented them in the past to create a simple content filter on a network used by a Youth CLUB, it's not the most SECURE since changing the DNS settings would bypass it but the machines are locked down so tightly that regular users can't change the DNS settings.

Solve : Removing Johnny Castaway Screensaver?

Answer»

A while back I installed Windows 98SE to Virtual PC under Windows XP Pro. I decided to add Johnny Castaway Screensaver to this virtual machine which I had on an old floppy disk and sure enough Johnny Castaway screensaver ran in the virtual environment as well as sound worked too.

Trouble was that Johnny Castaway was ok when not using the virtual environment and fun to watch him frustrated on the island etc and cooking boots to eat and mumbling, but I decided I had enough with him and wanted him shut off. Went into Windows 98 SE desktop properties and shut off screensavers. But he was still part of a timer that would enable him. HUNTED all over for this timer and couldnt find it. Went to uninstall him and he is still there after unsuccessful uninstall of him from virtual windows 98 system.

Was thinking that I was going to have to delete this Windows 98 SE virtual machine and start fresh to remove him, but FOUND this rather interesting that he has been known I guess to not want to be deleted..LOL http://www.how-to-uninstall-program.com/uninstaller/uninstall-johnny-castaway-screensaver-3-31-johnny-castaway-screensaver-3-31-removal-johnny-castaway-screensaver-3-31-windows-uninstaller.html

I am going to just create a new virtual Windows 98 SE environment which is clean and will probably just delete him by deleting the virtual hard drive that he is on, since even using a tool SUGGESTED at this site, the registry is likely swiss cheese afterwards.

I ENJOYED having him on my 386SX 40Mhz around 1994 back in the day with Windows 3.11 and 4MB RAM on the monster 5.25" 40MB Hard Drive that sounded like a rock tumbler when fetching data and booting. But I haven't used screen savers ever since upgrading away from CRT's around 2005 which needed them to avoid burning the screens.

Figured I'd post this here in case anyone remembers this screen saver and tries to install it on Windows 98 or newer for a screen saver flashback and has uninstall issues like I did.

Solve : Drives to turn on/off for Sytem Restore?

Answer»

First, I hope this is an appropriate area to post this. I really had no idea what other category it would fit into.

History and Information:
I haven't used Windows in a couple of years, but purchased a new computer.

My less than one month old Acer V5-571PG touchscreen laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed was initially sent for repair because it did not show any USB options in Bios. It was RETURNED to me from their repair office, but when I turned the computer on, it went directly to the Windows Activation screen and I couldn't get into other areas. Long story short, after calling them again I reinstalled the system to factory defaults and have since reinstalled programs and the like.

The system itself is now running OK. I have also created backups of my files and a Recovery disk. I included the above information so you know it was sent to a repair shop, did not open properly, and I was told by customer support to reset it to factory defaults, which I did. I also called them regarding my current issue. They're reply was: 1) the "Acer(C:)(Missing)" did not exist since they couldn't see it under the Windows Disk Manager, and 2) return it again so they can restore it to factory defaults... I'm HOPING that someone here may be able to help solve my current issue, since otherwise the computer is now running OK.

To help you visualize what I'm currently SEEING and in need of assistance with, I've attached a screenshot of the System Properties (Restore) and one of the disk management programs (Disk).

My current issue:
Now that I have it working OK and set up, I wanted to create a Restore Point. Under Restore Points, I have both "Acer(C:)(System)" and "Acer(C:)(Missing)" listed as options to turn Protection on or off for, as well as "Push Button Reset". The "Acer(C:)(Missing)" had Protection turned on when I first went into System Restore and had "Acer(C:)(System) and "Push Button Reset" turned off. The "Acer(C:)(Missing)" does not show in Disk Management, but does show on third party software -including AOMEI, which is what I chose to stick with.

Under AOMEI, there is a partition with no label, file system listed as 'other', 128MB size but is empty, flagged as GPT, MSR, and it's status is 'none'. Because of this information, I'm thinking it's a 'leftover' or something from the previous bad install.

Questions:
But I need to know for SURE if I can turn off the Protection for it, which in effect will remove it if I use System Restore in the future and am not sure if my Recovery disk will have it, since I've not used it before. I believe this because I hit "turn off" and it gave a warning that all restore points for it would be deleted and would no longer be able to be accessed - so I canceled turning it off.

I would also appreciate knowing if I should turn "Push Button Reset" on or keep it off as well, but this is a secondary question.

Thank you for any help and insight you may have on this issue.

[recovering disk space, attachment deleted by admin]After searching and asking this without even a remote hint of what this is, I decided to just make a system backup, turn off the Protection for the "missing" drive, and go from there...

I'll consider this CLOSED.

Solve : Windows 7 Imaging - Helpful info from my experience with it to share?

Answer»

Creating a Windows 7 Image is easy, however restoring from it can lead to all sorts of interesting problems!

I created a Windows 7 Image of my Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit of a 500GB Hard Drive that contained less than 14.1GB of data contained on 3 x DVD-R Discs.

After creating this image, I went to test the image by restoring the image to a spare 250GB hard drive that I had laying around. I simply with computer off, plugged the 250GB drive into the SATA power and com cables and attempted to boot the computer off of DVD 1 of the 3 DVD set of the image. DVD 1 of the set as I found out is NON-Bootable! ( Coming from using Ghost for years, I at first thought that maybe it was a bad image burn, but google search specified otherwise )

You have to use the Windows 7 Emergency Repair Disc to boot the system, and then follow instructions as linked at this website to restore from image. http://www.petri.co.il/restore-windows-7-from-backup-image.htm

Quote

* What they dont tell you are these facts:

--> The drive to take the image restore has to be equal to or greater storage capacity than the original hard drive. ( even if only 13GB of the 500GB hard drive contains data, it will fail trying to restore to a 250GB hard drive the 13GB of contents from a 500GB hard drive! , because it wants to create a C: partition that is of same size of that of the original hard drive )

--> If you plan on using this image on drives smaller than the original hard drive its best to use the built in Windows 7 Partition Shrink feature to make the C: drive for the images partition dimensions as small as possible! ( I had to use this feature to shrink the 500GB drives C: partition to around 250GB, and then create a whole new DVD image set. In order to squeeze this system image to a 250GB hard drive. * I could only shrink this hard drives C: partition using the built in Shrink feature to Windows 7 down by a maximum of 50% of that of the entire drives capacity. I wanted to shrink it further, but it would not allow it with the built in Windows 7 Shrink utility! )

--> If you restore this image in my case a image created then for the 250GB hard drive and restore it with no problems to a larger hard drive, the partition for C: on the hard drive stays at the size of that of the original hard drive. ( So in my case I also had a spare 300GB Maxtor drive and installed that in place of the 250GB and restored the image to the 300GB hard drive. While it was successful, when looking at Disk Management afterfinding the C: drive size not to be 300GB but 250GB, I found 50GB of unallocated space. So If you had a system with a 250GB hard drive fail and you replace the drive with a 2TB drive, you will find yourself looking at a C: partition of 250GB and the rest of it would be unallocated wasted space! )

--> When restoring from DVD set most would think that you place DVD or Disc #1 into the drive when going through the motion of restoring from image backup. If you do this and do not read what the prompt says you will get frustrated when the Image Restore Utility can not find the Image... The box where you can normally select the image to restore from will be blank. If you finally read the prompt in the GUI as I finally did you will find out that its requesting THE LAST Disc in my case the DVD #3 of the 3 DVD image set to be placed into the drive first. Placing the last DVD from the set into the drive you then can select the Image from the list in the utility under the GUI that was created from the Windows 7 Emergency Recovery Disc. After this image is selected, it will then request the Disc #1 of the set and then the remaining Disc's as it restores the image to the drive

--> One FINAL SURPRISE for those like myself, who have spare hard drives and like to test utilities like the Windows 7 Image utility to know how they work and to make sure the images are known to be good vs waiting for when the system dies to then realize you have a useless broken image!.... Windows 7 Image Utility when restoring the hard drive contents to another hard drive will overwrite the UNIQUE ID of the other drive with that of the SAME UNIQUE ID of the original hard drive that the image was created from. This is not a problem for anyone planning on using this replacement drive as a replacement drive, but after the drive is wiped clean and used once again as an external hard drive with the same system that it was used in testing the image on, this drive will cause the Windows 7 Disk Manager to unmount this drive. And when you go into Windows 7 Disk Management you will see the error message associated with why it can not be mounted and used as an external hard drive... The message of " OFFLINE ( The disk is offline because it has a signature collision with another disk that is online ) ". This is because the Windows 7 Image utility overwrote the UNIQUE ID of the replacement hard drive with that of the original hard drive that the image was created from. And on Windows 7, drives that are mounted have to have Unique ID's.

I can see this being a problem for someone who uses this utility to upgrade to a larger hard drive and use the old prior still healthy hard drive as either a slave for extra storage or making it into an external hard drive for use on the same system it came out of!

Fortunately the fix for this UNIQUE ID conflict is easy. Both drives had the same Unique ID which was a Hex ID of 63C14ADE. I was able to attach this external hard drive which shared the same UNIQUE ID, to another different Windows 7 computer I had so that it would mount as an external hard drive, and run DISKPART as administrator. This then gave me the DISK PART Prompt. From here I was able to list my drives via the LIST DISK command to find the mount location of the 300GB hard drive which was Disk 2. When the other drives of this system were 500GB was DISK 0 and 90GB was DISK 1, so I was then able to change the UNIQUE ID of this external hard drive at the mount location of DISK 2 by giving the command at Disk Part Prompt of:

SELECT DISK 2 UNIQUEID DISK ID=63C14ADC ( followed by ENTER Key )

I could have changed its Unique ID to any hex value not in use, but chose to just change the last value from E to C on this drive. I then was able to properly dismount this USB attached external 300GB SATA drive and connect it back to the original computer that it originally had conflicts with and it mounted FINE so that I could perform a faster 24GB transfer / install of a large mmorpg game from my old computer to my new computer without having to redownload the game Aion from NCSoft all over again.

So in future Windows 7 builds, I am going to use the smallest hard drive available, which I have a 80GB SATA hard drive that hasn't been used in years because its too small for my normal computing needs, but it actually can serve a purpose now to build systems clean using that 80GB hard drive. After Windows 7 has been installed, Drivers installed, Activated with Microsoft, All Security Updates, and All Programs that are part of Default Build .... Create a Windows 7 Image using the built in free image utility off of that 80GB drive to a group of DVD's or to an external hard drive if its greater than 25GB.

Then Restore the image to the intended Hard Drive for installation, such as a 1TB hard drive. Then when this is complete, resize my C: partition so that instead of it remaining at 80GB of the 1TB partition with over 900GB of wasted unallocated space, C: partition now consumes all of the unallocated space.

* And I will also know, never to try to use that 80GB SATA hard drive as 2nd hard drive or external hard drive in any of the builds that it was used in creating to avoid the UNIQUE ID Signature Collision with other Disks!

Very nice report. Will bookmark it.

Like the hands of lady Macbeth, you can never clean underwear that somebody else wore sufficiently. "Out damned spot, out I say!"This is why I use Macrium Reflect, as it can restore to different sized partitions with no problems unlike some programs.

I probably should've made that clearer but yes, you do need to make a rescue CD. I think the paid version of Reflect has an option to integrate Reflect into the boot options, but I don't know why you would bother as normally when I restore images it's due to upgrading or failing drives, so I wouldn't TRUST something stored on said drive. Booting from a rescue CD is always going to be the best way to restore an image - what I like about Reflect in this respect (ooh, rhyming) is that you have the option to create a minimal Linux based CD, a Windows PE based CD (a huge download), or as of the newest version a PE 4 (Windows 8, and much smaller download) based rescue CD. You can also modify the image to include other programs or drivers to support hardware not natively supported, which is pretty awesome. Also, Reflect prompts you when it starts to create a rescue CD if you haven't already, so it doesn't hide that fact until later like some programs.Requiring a boot disc to start the process is no problem. The best thing out of using Macrium instead of 7's built in imaging would be being able to not have to worry about having to resize partitions after the image is pushed to a larger drive, or having to go through the extra work to install first to a smaller drive or partition to then restore it to a larger drive and have to expand the partition. I like that Macrium seems to be more like Ghost 2003 which I used for years, but Ghost 2003 doesnt work with 7, but in which the image can be pushed to any capacity drive as long as the drive to receive the image can contain the whole contents of say a 12GB image.

A long time ago I had to restore a system for a user in the accounting department for my employer and their system was so custom installed that installing fresh and installing and configuring all applications etc would have taken 2 days. I created monthly image backups of the accounting systems ( workstations ) and the one day the CPA's system died. The 80GB IDE hard drive was TOAST with the clunk of death. The image of this CPA's workstation was 26GB in size, and the only spare hard drive I had was a 40GB WD drive. I was able to have them back up and running within about an hour by a 5 minute HDD swap, booting their workstation off of a custom made CD that acted like the Ghost boot floppy that loaded NDIS2 NIC driver and set a static IP 192.168.77.2 for workstation, and I was able to use the system in my office as an image server at 192.168.77.1 to push this 26GB image over the network to their workstation during the lunch period of noon to 1pm to not kill all other users BANDWIDTH, and the image push to the workstation was flawless. No resizing required, just needed to reboot the computer after the Ghost image push and remove my custom CD and the user was back in business.

The flexability of Macrium reflect being able to push an image to any size drive that is large enough to take the image is exactly what I like to use!!!

As far as the accounting workstations, it was a blessing when we finally got the approval and funding to add a Citrix Client/Server and place the important software on the server side of a quadcore xeon vs a bunch of HP DC5000 SFF Pentium 4 workstations with maxed out RAM and stock CPU squirrel cage cooling fans that sounded like a jet was getting ready to take off when they were running intensive apps and multitasking, and this way any workstation on the domain with the Citrix client installed and user with the proper credentials could access the highly configured software from any location at the companies 7 locations as well as remotely from home.

This meant that I no longer had to image those accounting systems on a monthly basis and could use my time more efficiently taking care of other problems and projects in the never ending cycle of projects completed and more thrown my way of user and owners requests for changes.Quote from: Calum on June 18, 2013, 03:55:10 AM

Solve : Monitor problems, is it the monitor or graphics driver??

Answer»

I have been having trouble with my monitor, for a while it would go to sleep and when I'd wake it, it would go black and I'd have to turn it off and turn it back on, it would flash and go back off. I'd continue to turn it off and on until it seemed to "warm up" and then it would stay on. It hasn't done that in a while, but now what it does is when I wake it up from sleep, if I open my mail or a webpage right away, it will go black. If I turn it off and back on, it flashes. If I can get the mail or page to close by trying to place my mouse where the "x" would be to close the page and then turn it off and back on, it will stay on, as long as the page is open, it only flashes. If I wait a bit and don't open anything for a minute or so then I can open whatever and it doesn't go black, it happens only when I wake it from sleep and open something right away. Does this sound like my monitor is going out or is it possibly a graphics card issue? I run Windows 7 and my monitor is an LCD probably 6 to 8 years old.Probably the monitor. LCD and LED displays are cheap these days and have better refresh RATES if you game. I have an old Dell LCD 17" and it blurs when there is motion in games and its the display that is the cause. If you have a spare display or a friend who can LOAN you their display that is the best test. If none are available for testing, then I'd buy a new display.

When GPUs fail they cause other SYMPTOMS that are not correctable by turning monitor on and off.okay thanks! Tried the monitor on my sons COMPUTER, did the same thing. There you have it...

I do miss the old Classic View, but didnt see a way to revert back. What I really hate is how they hid the select all to delete the junk. I did find it, but its not out in the open like the Classic interface use to be for "Check All" and delete.

Solve : Maximize life of your SSD?

Answer» http://lifehacker.com/5802838/how-to-maximize-the-life-of-your-ssd

Sharing this link that I found helpful. I have 4 SSD's and in 3 of the 4 computers with SSD's I am going to make adjustments tonight when I get out of work.

Corrections I need to make:

- Move Swap Space pointer back to the HDD's on 2 of my systems. ( * I didnt think it would hurt the SSD's to use their speed for swap space, but the issue is as quoted here which adds "lots" of unnecessary wear. More wear than I realized when I first set them up for their speed advantage over regular HDD's. )
Quote
The problem with an SSD is [that] data is written in blocks. A block may be 256KB: 256 * 1000 * 8 binary digits. To change even ONE of these digits, you must rewrite the ENTIRE block. That is to say, your OS sees 1 bit being written, but the SSD wear is equivalent to 256KB being written: a 2.048 MILLION fold difference.

- Disable the Page File on my new Windows 7 64-bit system which has 8GB RAM vs having it active on my SSD. ( Just as this article states if you are using 2 or 3 GB of RAM, but not the full 8GB, it might as well be disabled. My new build with games never use over 4GB of RAM yet, so I might as well get rid of the virtual memory which is slower than system RAM and not necessary with this build. )

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On my netbook that is running Windows XP with a 60GB SSD on 1GB RAM with a 1.66Ghz Atom CPU, if I had more RAM, I could try to get by without the swap space, but it would likely pose a serious performance hit to this computer if removed without a memory upgrade. With just 1GB RAM, it runs with around 250mb free memory with page/swap enabled, but if I choke off the swap space to preserve the life of the SSD, it may run out of memory with just 1GB of DDR2. * Maybe the fix here is to install a 2GB memory stick which should be plenty of memory for a netbook running XP Home SP3, and then disable this page file. http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/Toshiba-memory/NB+Series/NB205-upgrades.html

I am going to check to see if these drives have TRIM and if its enabled as well. I am pretty sure the 2 larger drives have it, but the 2 smaller ones that I bought cheap as refurbs are questionable.

SSD Drives are:

90GB OCZ Vertex 3 ( In Win 7 64 bit Gaming system as slave )
60GB OCZ Agility 3 ( In Win XP Home Netbook, only drive )
40GB Corsair ($35 refurb drive deal ) ( In Win 7 32 bit Gaming system as a slave )
30GB OCZ ($30 refurb drive deal ) ( In Win 7 32 bit wife's system for gaming as slave )

They work sweet for fast load times of large games like World of Warcrafts 22GB of bloat. However I know that I am taking a chance on the refurbs I bought as for its like buying 2 used cars at a car dealer with no odometers to know how much wear they have on them. But the price was right for the name brand, so hopefully they will last! My thoughts buying these cheap were that they may have been purchased and returned without any issues mainly because the original customers realized they needed larger capacity than 30 or 40GB. And being recertified as good they would have to relabel and sell them as refurbs maybe... or at least that is my wishfull thinking on the wear on them.
Swap space/page file is ideally suited to being on an SSD, moving it back to a mechanical drive is counterproductive. The write amplification you mention when referring to block writes is a worst case scenario, and not as much of a problem as most make out. Good SSDs are rated for a lot more write cycles than the average, or even power user, would use before replacing the drive anyway. If I remember rightly, the venerable Intel X25-M was rated for 10GB of writes per day for 10 years. There's a very INTERESTING thread on Xtremesystems where users have just written data constantly to a variety of SSDs to test their longevity, makes for interesting reading. Also, controller failures are much more likely than a flash failure - not that all SSD controllers are unreliable, some are fantastically reliable and others less so, but a controller failure can happen with no warning and will very rarely be caused by writing too much to the drive, so reducing the writes doesn't necessarily improve the lifespan or reliability of the drive.

There's really no need to do any "tweaks" for systems running on SSDs in my opinion - modern drives have TRIM and decent garbage collection which works fine if TRIM doesn't work for some reason, they're rated to take more writes than you'd ever use in the real world, and there's far too much FUD spread around - disappointed to see Lifehacker running this. Their advice is basically - turn off the page file or move it (pointless as mentioned above) disable hibernation (because an SSD makes using it pointless, more than that hibernation will cause damage) move temporary files (also counterproductive) disable search indexing and superfetch (pointless on an SSD but again won't cause damage) and disable defrag (done by default if you run the WEI and the system detects an SSD, because defragging an SSD is pointless).

All I do when I set up a system with an SSD is update the firmware of the drive, install the latest SATA drivers, and run the WEI afterwards.I'd have to agree with Calum, I've always just installed the OS on any SSDs and used them without making any other changes and I've never had an SSD go bad (I have them in almost all my MACHINES).

I have also heard a lot of bad information about what damages an SSD spread around, my favorite being that running programs or storing files on your SSD is bad and the SSD should only ever store the OS! *facepalm* - Tell that to my SSD-only laptop! Quote
I have also heard a lot of bad information about what damages an SSD spread around, my favorite being that running programs or storing files on your SSD is bad and the SSD should only ever store the OS! *facepalm* - Tell that to my SSD-only laptop!

Thanks for input on this. I was sort of thinking the same thing about, what about systems that are strictly just running off of SSD's like my netbook that have no good solution to avoid swap space usage on them.

Looking at more info online, while I have always found Lifehacker as a source of correct info unless a typo here or there, I am now noticing that the info may have been over-protective of unnecessary wear to SSD's with comments here as well as other google sources.

I didn't get around to making any changes last night to any systems like I planned. And will leave them be with the swap space on the SSDs as I have already configured.

I did find a piece of software though that was helpful in looking at Drive Stats, Health, and Features called CrystalDiskInfo and its free and works well. And it answered questions about the unknown usage odometer of my SSD's that I bought as refurbs.

The info read off the drives controllers were loaded with info such as how many power cycles, hours of operation, temps, total data read/write for SSD's over their lifetime to date, features the drives have such as if the SSDs have TRIM etc, and fortunately all 4 of them have TRIM, as well as it brought to my attention that a health of my new gaming computer build 500GB SATA HDD ( that I carefully extracted out of an old Seagate External ) has 1 reallocated sector which it warned me about. While this is not a major issue since all drives have some space to use when sectors are flagged as bad, this stood out running this software and it warned me in orange vs everything else in green.

Also I found out that the 500GB HDD that I installed in my new build only has 8MB Cache and 1700 hours of use, when my prior older gaming systems hard drive is a 500GB SATA with 16MB Cache and over 12,000 hours of use.

My SSDs that I bought as refurbs unless they were cleared at the factory of their prior stats they all have less than 1000 hours on each of them, which I can see that many hours being on them of my use. The newest one the 40GB that I got 2 weeks ago only has 84 hours on it which 60 of those hours are probably before I received it as for my new system hasnt been on more than maybe 24 hrs combined with building it, updates, and some gaming.

The SSD on my older gaming system with this software showed that this drive which is about 18 months old had already handled 10TB of Reads and 3TB of Writes. A statistic that I didnt think a drive would safe.

Also found this info here from DELL concerning their SSD's, which should be about the same for others:

http://www.dell.com/downloads/global/products/pvaul/en/solid-state-drive-FAQ.pdf

In which one thing that I found rather interesting was this statement in this PDF:

Quote
5. Why I might notice a decrease in write performance when I compare a used drive to a new drive?SSD drives are intended for use in environments that perform a majority of reads vs. writes. In order for drives to live up to a specific warranty period, MLC drives will often have an endurance management mechanism built into the drives. If the drive projects that the useful life is going to fall short of its warranty, the drive will use a throttling mechanism to slow down the speed of the writes.

And there are 2 things here that I picked up on...

#1 Quote
SSD drives are intended for use in environments that perform a majority of reads vs. writes.
This might be why lifehacker was suggesting to avoid swap/virtual memory on SSD's, however HDD's are going to phase out as a thing of the past as soon as the price decreases and capacity increases to a certain capacity around 512GB - 1TB for the average computer user.

#2 Funny and yet interesting that a drive that is driven hard for read/writes will slow down to fail outside of the Warranty Terms! * This kind of statement is one that I was tripped up in reading from DELL. Stating as a FACT that their SSD's under the right conditions of EXCESSIVE wear, a throttling feature enables in stretching the life of a product by slowing down its use ... in order to buy time .... To FAIL Outside of Warranty Terms? WOW!!!!

Will be looking into the info on my drives for Wear Leveling. Their statement of 100GB usable in their SSD drive example and 28GB hidden to me seems very generous for replacement of dead cells. And I thought that SSD's shrink when the cells die or maybe this is after all the hidden capacity was used up and no spare cells to go around as in the below quote from the same DELL source.
Quote
12. What steps do SSD drives take to limit the likelihood of damaging cells due to excessive writes?Dell uses following methods to avoid damaging flash cells and extend the life of the SSD drive:
- Overprovisioning: The process of increasing the spare area on a solid-state drive. It increases the available “ready to be written” resource pool which decreases write amplification. Since there is less background data movement required, performance and endurance increases. As an example, a drive with 100 GB usable capacity would have an extra 28 GB hidden capacity. The remaining capacity would be used for wear leveling.
- Wear leveling: Dell SSD drives uses both static & dynamic wear leveling techniques. Wear leveling allows for data to be mapped to different locations on the drive to avoid writing too often to the same cell.
- Garbage Collection: Dell SSD drives are equipped with sophisticated advanced level garbage collection technique. The "Garbage Collection Process" eliminates the need to perform erasure of the whole block prior to every write. It accumulates data marked for erase as "Garbage" and performs whole block erase as space reclamation in order to reuse the block, often doing this as a background process when the drive is not busy with I/O.
- Data Buffering & caching: Dell SSD drives use DRAM for data buffer, caching to minimize write amplification ensuring the likelihood of damaging cells due to excessive writes.
Crystaldiskinfo is a useful tool, yes, - CrystalDiskMark is also a handy benchmark. On Sandforce based drives (OCZ LE, Vertex 2, Vertex 3, Agility 2, Agility 3, most Corsair Force drives, Sandisk drives, Intel 520, Intel 330, and others) it won't give an accurate RESULT as by default it uses a mixture of compressible and incompressible data. Sandforce drives rely on being able to compress data to get their headline figures, so they recommend the ATTO benchmark instead. Of course, for a real-world comparison, CrystalDiskMark is fine, as not all data is compressible and thus Sandforce drives are not as fast as the numbers suggest.

You're correct that Lifehacker is usually a reliable source of info, hence why I'm disappointed they have posted this article which contains some pretty useless information along with some common sense tweaks.

The throttling you mention is a "feature" of Sandforce based drives. This doesn't appear on many, if any, drives based on other controllers, but Sandforce drives will slow down the write speed once a certain threshold is passed within a timeframe.

28GB overprovisioning on a 100GB drive is not always the case, it's just an example. Some drives have more than others. It's also possible to set aside a little extra by partitioning the drive and leaving an area entirely unpartitioned - this will then be used for further wear levelling. Not really useful with modern drives except under certain rare circumstances, but possible if you're really paranoid about writing to your drive.

Not all SSDs have a buffer to help collect writes together, helping to eliminate write amplification. Some use other tricks for this. It's also possible to do this in software - there's a program called FancyCache I've used before which can use your system RAM as a read/write buffer. It's highly configurable and can also use a drive as a cache for another drive - effectively, a more advanced version of Intel's SRT. This can be handy when you have a drive that's not so great at random I/O (HDD or an old SSD) as it will hold the data in RAM and flush it periodically, turning a series of random 1KB writes into a 1MB sequential write. It's worth taking a look at it as once you get it set up properly it provides quite a speed boost. A full RAMdrive would be faster than FancyCache for, say, loading a game, but a RAMdrive is a more specific tool and thus is better at what it does, but it's not as much of an all rounder, if that makes sense. I used to play Battlefield out of a RAM drive with 5GB/sec read speeds - that destroys any SSD out there.Quote

I have used RAMdrive's before, but my problem is that the games I want to speed up exceed the amount of system RAM as for I cant afford a system with 32GB RAM to use 25GB of it for large MMORPG games.

I have used this RAMdisk before and it is REALLY FAST!!! I ran a benchmark on it and it was just insanely fast compared to a HDD as well as SSD having direct access of data from RAM. http://memory.dataram.com/products-and-services/software/ramdisk

I actually found this worked really well with a SQL Database that was being populated with data through an automation program I created, it was hammering my hard drive to where the hard drive LED was lit solid as every piece of info was being written to the tables of the database which was causing a write to the drive. I ended up placing this onto a RAMdrive and it KEPT the abuse of the read/writes off of the hard drive and allowed for a final write of the data to the drive in the end. Did this on a system with 3GB HDD and a 1GB RAMdisk.Exactly, there are tons of uses for RAMdisks. Redirect your temp files to it...run a database off it...load a game, or parts of a game, into it...a program named Steam Mover assists greatly by automating the process of moving the files and creating a junction link for them so that the OS and programs don't think the files have moved, this eliminates problems with not being able to find vital files.
The largest game I ever played from a RAMdisk was Battlefield BC2, which was around 12GB in size if I remember rightly. When RAM was really cheap, I liked to go overboard on it - now, prices are back up, so I agree it's prohibitively expensive for most people.re: RAM I think it's a trade-off, especially with newr Operating Systems that have features like SuperFetch and the ureadahead daemon (Linux). I notice a huge difference when starting games if the OS "expects" me to start the game; for example, if I play SkyRim after not having played it for a few weeks, it will take noticably longer to load. If I play it frequently, Windows get's the idea and starts to precache parts of the game even when I'm doing something else; the result is that the game starts noticably faster, even if the System has been rebooted since, on account of Windows having that data as part of the stuff it precaches. The more available RAM, the more precaching SuperFetch can do so the more applications and data files are streamlined. I think SuperFetch and the OS caching for Files comes into play for an SSD, too; in particular caching could take place that would streamline multiple write operations into one, meaning that what would be any number of block writes would become one block write. This is/was designed of course for slower magnetic hard drives, but SSDs will gain the benefits as well.Again, SuperFetch, Prefetch, and similar things are halfway houses. FancyCache is like a more advanced, configurable version of SuperFetch, but a RAMdrive far outshines any of those for raw performance, sacrificing flexibility and ease of use. That's not to say they don't work well, they're great at what they're designed for, and certainly offer huge speed boosts over systems not running with SuperFetch or equivalent.
I don't think SuperFetch streamlines writes to prevent write amplification, although I can't say for sure - you may well be correct on that.Quote from: Calum on June 15, 2013, 01:37:52 AM

Hi guys,

Just came across this Website and it looks very informative for various computer problems. Was just browsing trying to find any Websites that could help me if problems arise in the future.

Anyway just thought I would introduce myself to the Forum and look to join in any discussions in the future.

Solve : DNS choice?

Answer»

So here's the story. 3 Days ago my wife called me at work to inform me that she cant get out to the internet and netflix is not working on our TV. Instantly I knew it was a DNS issue since we have Vonage VoIP which is set up with a static IP address and port forwarding etc that communicates directly via IP vs DNS resolution. Told my wife to flip a switch that I have my network hardware connected to, to bring it all down and back online again. Problem remained.

A few years ago I set up my primary router with custom DNS SETTING to use MIT's free DNS service and set up the primary and secondary DNS IP's vs getting them dynamically through Comcast. Comcast's DNS a few years ago had issues, and going with MIT at the time made for trouble free surfing and communications. Prior to using the free DNS through MIT, I registered with OpenDNS and they gave me 2 IP addresses to use their service. I wrote these down in my tech notebook that has all sorts of important info.

With my wife now disconnected and having to call back since killing the network hardware via power switch for all on a power strip disconnected the Vonage VoIP. She still had the same issues with no internet access. Told her to flip open my book on my desk and find the page for OpenDNS, and walked her through setting this up custom static DNS for her computer. Whalla, she was now connected to the internet and able to surf without issues. She was then asking for me to fix the netflix on the TV over the phone. I told her that I will have to edit the Router when I get home from work as for it has an entry to MIT's DNS and their DNS must be down for the first time in 3 years using it. Told her to watch movies and TV shows on her desktop computer instead.

Phone call 15 minutes later because my daughter wanted to watch something on Netflix and cant. Walked my wife through adding these DNS IP's which are for OpenDNS service manually to the Wireless Network Adapter settings for her computer.

Family satisfied with band aid of OpenDNS static entries to be able to use the internet and I get home at 3:30am to fix the routers DNS settings to now point to OpenDNS instead of the old IP's that are based off of MIT's free DNS service that still is not working. With OpenDNS IP's set and config saved, router reboots and all is well. I am now able to remove the static DNS entries and set them back to dynamic which uses the router to resolve through OpenDNS.

So my questions are....

How many others here use a DNS that is different than the DNS that is provided by their ISP, and what DNS service are you using if other than the ISP's DNS service.?

Also if you have used a couple different DNS services, please list them and pros and cons to their use which lead for you to DECIDED to use the DNS of choice you are using now vs the others?

*I haven't tested Comcasts DNS in about 3 years, but back then it was a poor DNS setup. My biggest complaint with Comcasts DNS service was that during peak customer use times, their DNS was unable to keep up with all the requests. I'd get pages that take forever to resolve, and thats if they would actually resolve etc. Switching to OpenDNS for about a week and testing them out and then finding MIT's service just a hair faster in page load times etc, I switched and never turned back to Comcasts DNS when I found the issue to be their crappy DNS service.Let me assume that you only work with IPv4. When IPv6 becomes universal, the rules will change around. I donno.

You can always pay somebody for a DNS.
Or use Dynamic DNS And pay for it.

Some others are:
Open DNS
Google DNS
Tine Warner DNS
Rackspace DNS

My personal recommendation is the later, Zone Edit.

Fair pricing, easy to use, does most of what you want. Nut not as fancy as a full dynamic DNS, but check it anyway.

This article needs some work, but t can help one to understand what it is and why you may want to use it. (Here in the USA IPv4 is still widely used.)

Quote

Dynamic DNS (DDNS) is a method of automatically updating a name server in the Domain Name System (DNS), often in real time, with the active DNS configuration of its configured hostnames, addresses or other information.

The term is used to describe two different concepts. At the administration levels of the Internet, "dynamic DNS updating" refers to systems that are used to update traditional DNS records without manual editing. These mechanisms are explained in RFC 2136, and use the TSIG mechanism to provide security.

If one company has a large Intranet they might want to make it part of a private DNS.
Help this is of some help.
EDIT: Sorry I can't do better. Please read the Wikipedia article, it was just updated a few days ago.Yes I am just using IPv4 right now, even though router and computers support IPv6. REPLACED my old Linksys router about 2 years ago when I thought IPv6 was going to be implemented sooner than later, but also because the router from 2004 was showing its age and the last flash for it was 2006 and when it comes to security hardware, I'd rather have newer than older.

Looking at the links, it appears that the paid DNS are for companies and individuals with web servers by which they want customers to have fast reliable access to through paid DNS RESOLVER services.

Is there any benefit to a paid DNS service for a home computer user with no web servers hosted out of ones home? The speed of OpenDNS is fast and free. Just trying to figure out of there is a benefit to a paid DNS for a home user with no web servers requiring Domain Name to IP translations and forwarding.
