Solve : Good buy??

Answer»

I'm torn on whether or not to purchase this system . . . I have an opportunity to buy, from Ebay, a dual socket 370 motherboard, with a matched pair of 1GHz P3 CPUs and 4x512Mb PC133 SDRAM. I would then need a new PSU, an SCSI disk drive, and an SCSI cable. This will set me back £61.85 in total. I can knock off about £17 by using an old, slow IDE drive I have lying around, but I'd RATHER use the SCSI one.
Do you think it's worth it? I had myself almost ready to buy yesterday, but then the auction ended. Now it's back, and £5 cheaper.
I'd appreciate any advice, I really can't decide whether to get it.
I do have the money, but I need driving lessons, driving tests and then insurance/fuel money . . .If you get the machine you will FIND new ways to save up for the other upcoming expenses as i know you have been looking forward to getting mobile....

I say go for it !

But i'm a true Capatilist...if i'm not living and spending one step beyond my means i start to feel guilty... do you NEED the COMPUTER? it sounds like you need to spend the money on more important things; insurance and gas are not cheap.Well, I went ahead and bought it last night.
Cash is starting to FLOW in a little more now so I think I will be ABLE to afford my car-related costs.
I don't NEED the computer, in the same way I don't NEED to get mobile . . . I'd just like it.
Thanks for the advice guys.

Does anyone no this information or where I could find it Thanks

Why not get a new screen for that specific laptop?

If it's still under warranty, you may be able to get it for free.

This is a V1000 model and is not worth a new screen That is why I am asking so I can hopefully find alternatives as cheap as possible Thanks AnywayWait, so are you looking for a new laptop or a new screen?I am looking for a 15" USED screen that will fit my laptop I was told that the Toshiba A60 will fit. I know there is a compatible list but I do not know where I can find it.Hmmm...I'm not SURE. If you have the SPARE monitor, I guess you could try it.
No promises though.

By 'broken screen', is there anything you can tell us about it that?It is a Laptop with a cracked LCD screen, it is not a separate monitor although I can use it on a free standing monitor ,but not very helpful when traveling.
I sure I don't no what else I can tell you its all been said.
If you have a CHUNGHWA CLAA150XH01 LCD screen in your home for about £30 then you can help if you haven't I don't think you can.
Cheers and thanks for your input.
All right.

Just to LET you know, not all monitors can work with all laptops. Some monitors are specifically designed for ONE specific laptop.Yes I know that. This is why I asked the question regarding compatibility.
I am a computer engineer and will normally fit new screens in clients machines as they are normally from insurance claims.

Solve : Need help asap lost presentation?

Answer»

I have been working on a power point presentation and saving as I go. I thought I was saving to my docs but it looks like it might be to f/ which is my usb for my printer. WOULD it not let me know that it couldn't save it there? It saved each time no problems. I think it is f since when I go into the powerpoint file it shows on the bottom of the file tab but says the path is incorrect and to check it. I have search my computer but can't find it and when I look into f/ it says to insert disk. I also had my portable stick plugged into the usb beside it and it is E/ but it now says that the disk in drive e is not formatted. I have to have this READY for Monday and don't know how to recover it. Is there a way?
Thanks

That doesn't make sense. Your printer is not assigned a drive letter.

Do a search of your entire computer on *.pptI have my printer plugged into the front of my tower. When I go into my computer and unplug the usb to the printer the f drops off my computer LIST. What I don't understand is how it can save it there when it is not a valid place to save.
I have search my computer by going into search-files and folders- *.ppt-and chosing my computer.
I do not see it there but every other one I have done.
Thanks for getting back to me so soon.
Do you ever connect a USB flash drive to your computer?I also had my portable stick plugged into the usb beside it and it is e/ but it now says that the disk in drive e is not formatted.

Yes
This is what was beside my usb f. The one beside it is e/ and is the one that I can't open now and asked to be formatted. I even tried on my laptop. If I format it will it delete EVERYTHING?
Thanks

Solve : New PC 1st time owner?

Answer»

Just bought my 1st real PC, WEBTV up to now. BB tells me I should have it "optimized" @ the store. Is it necessary & can it be done @ home? They SAID it clears up factory "clutter" and improves speed? Welcome to the forum...

DEPENDING on what brand you purchased, most PCs like HP, Dell, Gateway, etc., etc., will come with software installed you probably will never use.

If you're a first-time PC owner...it would probably be a good idea to have the PC "optimized", but I wouldn't pay for it...since you can do this yourself...or have someone a little more familiar with the process do it for you.

The process is relatively simple...just go through Add/Remove programs to remove those programs you wouldn't be using, clean up any leftover unnecessary files, and then run the defrag software.

However, I highly recommend you let someone with a little more experience do it for you...and try not to tackle it yourself...or you'll be kicking yourself in the head.

There's another way to look at it, too. The store may just want you to spend that little extra money...just so it makes the salesperson look good to the manager. The most likely reason why they are recommending the optimization.

A few things you'll want to know about PCs:

  • Maintain your operating system by making sure it's updated with the latest patches.
  • Make sure you have an antivirus program, spyware program and firewall program installed. Keep them updated. Run regular scans on your computer.
  • Perform weekly maintenance, removing any unwanted software, clearing internet cache/cookies/history...and performing a defrag.

If you follow the above and your computer does what you want it to...then there's no need to remove any vendor pre-installed software...unless you need the space.

I hope you found this useful... Saviour, thanks. Yes, that helped, however keep in mind that I`m clueless re. PC terms, ie. patches, firewall. I do know what firewall does. How do I get it installed? Also if I want to use "Firefox" same Q? As you may have surmised I`m ancient, so this is all new territory for me. Sort of exciing tho. Big sports fan so I also got a new Samsung HD LCD. Don`t spend my $$ on the ladies anymore so WTH. Thanks again. You're welcome...

Can you tell us what you bought...as far as the manufacturer of the PC?

Also, what operating system is installed on this PC? Is it Windows Vista? XP?

If you have the above, they have firewalls installed on them already. Just make sure they are enabled. You can do this through the Security Center of your Control Panel.

Also...Firefox is the way to go...and highly recommended here on this forum. You can DOWNLOAD it here: http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/

Don't worry about being ancient...I'm right there with ya...and I learn something new everyday.

As far as help goes...there's ALWAYS someone here waiting to help you with your questions. All we ask is that you give us a little time to respond to them.

Let us know if we can help you any further...

Solve : Dell? Not much of a fan any more.?

Answer»

I bought a Dell Dimension 5100C about 3 years ago. I have had nothing but trouble with it. It wold loose all sorts of stuff, modem ,pointer things like that. Support would have me put every thing back to where it was when I bought it and have me unplug cables and plug them back in then send out a teck to replace a part. I bet over the last 3 months I have spent more than 30 hours with support. They have replaced the motherboard three times, the modem five, the fan and the heatsink. The last time the teck was out here he replaced the modem and that didn't fix the problem and he got them to replace the computer. I guess he got tired of coming out here. It is a long way from the city. The new computer got here three DAYS ago. They didn't consult me about any thing. They sent a InSpiron 530S. It has Vista for the OS. It is much bigger than the old one so it looks like *censored* one the desk. Then it has much better cooling than the old one because of the size and the EXTRA fan. It don't get NEAR as hot as the old one did. It has a 500 gig hard drive and best of all it has a card modem and not that postage stamp looking modem. It has a card reader insted of a 3.5 floppy, the wife has a lot o f stuff on floppy. I guess that I will pick up a usb 3.5 floppy. When I bought the old one the CPU was top end, I paid extra for it, I got a 2200 duel core with this one. I know that it is much better than what I had but it is a long way from top end. This was the third time I was told that the computer would be replaced. I told the wife that I will believe it when it shows up. It is hear and I am not sure if I like it or should call them try to get it replaced with some thing else. I told the teck that I didn't wont any thing that wold be proprietary. I am told that the motherboard is. I know that the PSU is. I guess that I should be happy that they replaced it at last. In short I would have never have bought this computer. Then from now on I will never buy an off the shelf computer anyway. What would you do? What are my options? Oh the old computer had Windows XP Pro. I do like XP. May be I am just use to it. Vista seems to run smoother and faster than XP.Sorry that you're unhappy, but, it seems to me that Dell did a wonderful job.

Just my opinion, of course.Dell done what it could however I had ISSUES with them as well so I know how you feel.Seems to me that Dell have done a good job there.
You got a free computer upgrade, don't complain about it.
Dell motherboards and PSUs are almost always proprietary.
However I do agree about not buying an off the shelf computer, I'd never get one myself because I just don't trust the manufacturing after a few of the things I've seen lately, plus it's so expensive.Sometimes it just easier to build your own. Dell stuff is all sensitive any how. If the mb fails you have to get the exact, but if a differnt one fails then as long as it meets some of the specs you want you can get an even better one or faster cpu or something.Quote from: squall_01 on July 23, 2008, 01:53:25 PM

What does this mean ? ?saing that you can upgrade a custom pc but its hard to upgrade a dell.Upgrading a Dell is as easy as any other machine provided the right parts are purchased...
I think you meant to say that Dell uses a lot of propietary parts which means they need to be replaced with Dell products...Yeah thats what I was tring to get at. Like HP's, Compaq ......dell's are not good. Watch this video and you will see why......

dell's are not good. Watch this video and you will see why......

when something bad happens to somebody, obviously somebody must be at fault. If someone leaves their oven on and their house burns down, do they sue the company that manufactures the oven? No, because it is their own mistake. If somebody leaves their computer on all night to download torrents of recently released movies, completely ignoring the fact that speedfan is telling them to shut down or it will overheat, and it catches fire, god forbid it be the fault of that person who made the conscious decision at some point to leave the computer on.

I found the music made me think of africa and third world countries, not a middle-class person in a sue-happy country, looking to blame somebody but themselves for their own misfortune.

Computers generate heat, often lots. They require plenty of airspace in and around the case and especially fan holes, and they should be kept fairly far away from flammable materials, like oil-soaked rags or LIGHTER fluid. Much like the aforementioned oven. You won't find people carelessy placing paper on the elements of a stove, so why do I so often see people block their monitors/computers intake vents with paper and other materials? I've seen them covered with stickers for goodness sake, and they can't seem to figure out why their computer keeps overheating.

OK- I'm done now. The main point I'm trying to make here is A: how do they know the computer started it, and B:would they be suing their furnace company if a bunch of dust-bunnies in the registers caught fire? Probably not.Not exactly clear as to what was causal in that slide show - nice music, though.

Just found out last night that the processor (T7200 Core 2 Duo) in my wife's laptop can go to 100C! Holy Toledo! Even an American knows that's the boiling point of water! Computers are not toys.the processor in my computer (amd xp-m) can go to 102c THAT'S HOT!!

Solve : PC learning?

Answer»

Were there points you all felt overwhelmed, or are most of you just naturally geared to geekdom? Before, about all I ever did was email, but this last few months I'm trying to learn how to do EVERYTHING, and learn how to fix things (that I mostly mess up), and I really feel stupid! I realize I don't know the basics. People helping me are patient, but I know they must sometimes throw their hands up, and say, "You've got to be kidding!" so what are you trying to ask us?
Shes not trying to ask anything:

This forum is all about helping people in need, no matter how much knowledge they have with computers.

Even if you dont know the basics, you dont have to feel stupid. Everyone has to START somewhere!

Oh, and yes, probably most of us are geared towards geekdom!
Thank you. Guess not everyone can be a Geek. But maybe I'll learn enough not to feel totally hopeless. Appreciate it! I think I get your point...

I can't answer for all of those who frequent this forum...I, like yourself, am self-taught. I went to school, a long time ago, and learned COBOL, Fortran, Basic, RPG, etc., etc. Has it helped me in the computer world...absolutely not.

It's a Windows world...unfortunately.

I learned by getting my hands dirty...using the web..."the world is at your fingertips".

Also...I learned by frequenting sites, such as this one.

I volunteer my time, because I want to...and knowing I've helped someone gives me all the satisfaction I need.

There were times when I've helped people as much as I possibly could...only to end up at a stalemate...without being able to correct their issue. However, I'm only one person...there are thousands who frequent this forum...and there has to be at least one who has the answer...so it really doesn't make me feel that bad.

However, there are people out there, who demand help from you...and make you feel like a "shmuck" from the start. People like that don't understand that what we provide is free. Giving us a hard time, because we don't know something...doesn't mean we're stupid...we're just not privy to the information. Heck...I learn something new everyday, by VISITING this site.

I'll only answer questions, I feel I have a good grasp on...otherwise...I LEAVE it alone.

I also try not to step on others toes...if they are already in the process of helping someone...so I don't confuse the original poster.

I admire you for taking on the responsibility of teaching yourself. Remember, though...if you ever get stuck...CH will always be here for ya.

Thanks for the post...and all the best! Thank you for the encouragement. I have high regard for you folks, for all the time you put in to help, and for all the knowledge you share. I'm aware that this old computer is a mess, but it's a lot more usable because of all the help I get here. Thank you!yet some of the old thing you learned in the past, like BASIC and DOS are still around and are helpful, this one guy(David Cook, writer of Intermidiate Robot Building, see it at http://www.robotroom.com/) learned programing the Apple 2 and the Commedore 64 using the 6510 Asm Language which helps him program Microcontroller chips for his robots using the 68xx Asm Language which is relative to the 6510 Asm. even though i wasnt around during the time of DOS and the 386 Computers, i still use the technology principals for computers here and now.I didn't have any of that. I just began teaching myself when I bought a Compaq second hand (without a CD), sticking mostly to emailing, as I didn't have much time. It had XP Pro installed, and I was getting updates until MS suddenly told me I had counterfeit, and quit giving me updates. Took them a few years to decide that. Can't afford to do anything about that right now, so just trying to maintain and learn, keep it cleaned out. I'm going to be looking into Linux, for when I can get a new computer. Maybe by then I won't be such a danger to a computer. I can assure you of one thing. If you only want to learn, you'll. It won't happen next day, but eventually will.
Twenty some years ago, I knew computers from pictures only. Never went to any computer related school, but I was stubborn. I just hate not to know about something, anything, so I started spending few hours every day with computer....it paid off

Solve : A query about Word print preview?

Answer»

Hi - delighted to have found this forum and hope this is the right place to post! We have one computer at work and we are running M'soft Office 2000 Premium on Windows XP.

The boss's son was using the computer at the weekend to upload some photos etc. I don't know what he's done, but ever since when I press the print command - either on the toolbar or going in VIA file/print - a print preview pane comes up and I have no idea how to disable it. This particular print preview pane is not one I recognize as the USUAL one when previewing a Word document and wonder if somehow he's managed to link the preview pane he was using for his photos. We don't have Internet access at work (HARD to believe, eh? ) so it's not something he's downloaded.

Any ideas what's happened and how I MIGHT put things back to the way they were? It's annoying having the the preview pane come up and having to click on print again to get things moving.

I'd ask the LAD himself what he's done only he's gone off to Australia!

Thanks in advance! Can you give us a screenshot of the problem?Sorry - as mentioned we don't have Internet access in the office so I can't! I am using my own computer at home to find the answer to the problem!

Solve : TV/Monitor Help?

Answer»

My son wants to get a 38" +/- TV for his office. The TV will hook up to cable but he also wants to be able to hook up to his office computer as a second monitor, from time to time. (For presentations)

Assume that his current OS is XP Pro and video out is VGA.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. I know nothing about using a TV as a monitor. It depends on the model of TV, but most new TVs have DVI, VGA or HDMI inputs. Adapters can be found if the TV doesn't accept VGA inputs.
I know that's not too HELPFUL, but it's perhaps a start.
Remember that most TVs are LOW resolution too, so the display will likely look very blocky.Calum - Thanks.

Is it as simple as connecting the TV to the video card with the right adapter. Will a low end video card be able to 'power' a 38" display? It should be that simple, although the TV may NEED to be switched to the correct input using some button on the remote.
As for the card powering it, it's about the resolution, not the size. As the TV will probably be a lwoer resolution than a normal monitor, the card should have no trouble. Thanks You're welcome, glad to have helped.

Solve : Help me regarding Font usage, pls?

Answer»

Hello,

I want to know that how can I use any other-than English language font. For example, I have ALRIGHT installed a regional language font, in the font section, located at control pannel. But I am not aware, how to use it while writing; say on the search engine or in the email compostion.

Kindly help me.

Thanks for the helper. You can't enable a language by merely installing a font. You need to install the language. What version of Windows are you using?Windows XP. So, its mean I need a complete software for it. But then again, if I buy one would I be able to write that language straight in the email(Gmail, Yahoo) and how. The one who recieves the mail will see the mail as it is with out installing or doing any thing?

Thanks.Quote from: Qutabshahi on August 01, 2008, 11:27:52 AM

So, its mean I need a complete software for it.
No, no, that's not it, you go to Windows Control Panel and install one of the languages MICROSOFT has already made available. Here's a guide to Installing East Asian Language Support Under Windows XP . If you want to install some other language, other than an East Asian Language, the procedure is similar. Of course, not all languages in the world are available.

Using this method to install a language does not change Windows MENUS to that language but enables you to type in that language in word processing screens, email, etc., which is what I believe you want. So, you would be able to type your email MESSAGES in the installed language.

Solve : Weirdest thing ever done to your PC (software only)?

Answer»

Things like this are an easy way to describe (at least the foolish and experimental) part of your personality, so why not share the most painful moments for your PC with the REST of us!

To start off: I once managed to get not dual, but triple boot succesfull WinXP installations from a SINGLE partition. Next to that, I had Ubuntu LINUX on a second, and DOS 6.22 on an old drive. All of this stitched TOGETHER by GRUB and Boot.iniI don't know if you know JXY or not but he recently tried to triple boot WINDOWS Vista, XP and Mac on his Vista Laptop.....an failed.... Every time he booted into Mac, he had to use the Windows Discs to repair Windows before he could boot into it.
However, he managed to get Vista, XP and Ubuntu on it.

For me, Evilfantasy recently helped me with a Hijackthis log for one of my Experimental laptops. The other day, it stopped working. One time it would freeze on startup, then it would log onto windows but without a working keyboad, then it would freeze at the manufacture logo or say 'no operating system found' or 'no HD'.
I hit the computer several times (breaking the up arrow key) but it's working perfectly now.

Solve : Increase board thread count??

Answer»

"!~*:.Pink Floyd.:*~!" has suggested to have the amount of threads listed on each page to be INCREASED, currently 20 threads are displayed per page. Before doing this I'd like the communities feedback to make sure this is something we can all agree on. So please put your vote in and feel free to make any additional comments / suggestions.I'm not too bothered really.
I think 20 is a decent size, not too much to sift through but a decent amount of threads shown.
Then again, a slight increase might be useful - I'll say 25.To be perfectly honest, Nathan...I see no reason why it needs to be changed at all.I was about to ask that it be increased, actually. I really wish it was more when I'm trying to find something that I posted recently, and find out that it has been moved to page 2 or 3.
Is there an easy way to make the number customizable?I can easily change it in the settings. But as far as customizable to where each user can specify their own setting, that would likely be pretty difficult.I like the 25 per page, anymore and the subject is usually lost
anyhow.------------_Like Off-Topic......... yeah come to think about it would be nice just to increase it for a day to 25 or 30 to see how it feelsI agree with Saviour , its fine the way it is . Ok. Seems like 25 is the winner. So we'll try that out. Increased to 25.Yeah, I just voted 25. I don't see much point in it but it might be useful in the Computer Viruses and Spyware and Forum Games sections. While we're on the topic of increasing board thread COUNT, how about increasing thread reply count...... I don't even know what it's set at now, but sometimes I wish it were slightly more. What's it set at?Good point.Quote from: michaewlewis on June 26, 2008, 02:09:15 PM

Solve : What Antivirus software do you have??

AVG Anti-Spyware

No issues at all.Quote from: Bones92 on July 23, 2008, 03:23:44 AM

Avg 7.5 and Mamutu.

Nobody has heard of Mamutu, I swear...

i have now :
http://www.google.ca/search?q=mamutu&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-aI run avast, avg anti spy, spybot, cleaner an adaware on all my systems.i only have 1 pc, used norton 2005 (don't remember), avast, avg 7, then avira but back to avg 7 again.
avira doesn't detect a virus in my psp that time.
I though zone alarm just a firewall, am i mistake? Zone Alarm = Firewall, no mistake ZoneAlarm do offer other products too, an entire security suite. That explains why I had installed it CAUSE 2k dont have a firewall. I need to tighten my security. Dont have a pop blocker or firewalls or antivirus on a few/. I use Avira now on my vista machine.

I used to use avast at one time, then I tested AVG, but decided to test other antivirus programs that were free. I heard that Avira has highest detection rates, Avast is most AGGRESSIVE in scanning/protection, but AVG is best all around. That's what I heard, but who knows.

As long as all of them are free and all of them update or at least checks for updates at least once a day, I'd just pick the one that runs most smoothly on your computer (doesn't lag your computer) and has a GUI interface that you are comfortable with.Used to have AdAware on my comp but it was slow to open up.

Now i have
Online Armor(Firewall and PROGRAM monitoring)
MalwareBytes Anti-Malware
Spybot

I still have the 2001 version of Norton from my old Dell. but its pretty much useless.how would you rate online amor???macdad
You don't have any antivirus program installed?

I have Online Armor installed on XP. WORKS fine.i tried AVG, had an error when i tried to run it. but i'll get Avast soon.

It works pretty darn good. Firewall is excellent, Program monitoring asks you if you want to run a program or proccess. Learning mode is great, it tells you if you Start Menu, System Folder, or other stuff Needs attention, is Fine, or is Critical.

Well everytime i've done it i keep getting a copyright CLAIM while the video processes. I know other people have used the same footage because there are like a thousand re-creations of movies on youtube, using the movies footage.

My question is: how do you get around the copyright stuff on youtube and remove the "fingerprint" from the footage?? HMM... I've uploaded videos before, but have never COME across that PROBLEM. More info on the video would be niceyeah..its a tough one...

i've found out somethings that might help.
OKAY.

When i take the audio out of the clip and then try to upload it, it works. When i put the audio back in, it doesnt!! The audio is a popular song and i've tryed downloading several different ones...which is what i'm trying to do now. So thats where im at. I know its the song i just have no idea how to get it on the youtube!

How are you putting the song with the video? Can you give more information on this clip? What's the song you've put into it? Have you tried uploading it with a different song/audio (just as an experiment)? What is the exact message you receive when you try to upload?

Solve : notebook/tablet options??

Answer»

Hi all

I’m new to the forum and I’ve had a pretty good search through the posts on here but don’t find anything that covers this…. I’m hoping that someone else might have ALREADY done this research though and can help

I’m looking for SUGGESTIONS on a laptop (but I have quite specific requirements)

NEEDS to be convertible (notebook to tablet)
Needs HD screen with HDMI port to an HD TV and graphics card suitable for that purpose.
The screen needs to be touch sensitive – preferably with a stylus for accurate and precise digitizing.
I’m going to want to use the laptop outside as well as inside so the screen is actually pretty important when it comes to clarity in natural light.

I’ve looked through a few options, some of the HP Pavillion convertibles look good – but I don’t see a port suitable for an HDTV. There are a couple of Gateway options but its difficult to get really in depth details about the spec from the website. Lenovo also have a few options but I’m kinda getting swamped,

Anyway – if anyone has looked for the same thing as me it’d be great if you have any tips or suggestions,

Thanks, Bradders

It worked fine in New Orleans, but does not SINCE i moved to Dallas area.have you tried turning the VOLUME up on the Volume controls on your computer and on the Speaker it-self?I have turned up the volumn on both the computer and the speakers and yet the sound is very low. I also have the same problem on another computer that I have.

papajoe

Is it possible you can try another pair of speakers and/or EARPHONES to make sure it isn't the speakers that are broken.Have tried other speakers and still no improvement.
papajoeTwo possibilities:
1. They don't like loud music in Dallas
2. You need to reinstall sound driver.I guess that I will just to install new DRIVERS or sound cards

papajoeIf you don't know what sound card/sound chip you have:
Download, and install Everest: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

a little off topic, but what was this class called? im really curious as it is not up to the data guy to KEEP his server room cool, it is up to the architect and/or the HVAC consultant.Just to answer the questions asked:

The server room is not seperately AC cooled. The main rack is enclosed and fan blown from the bottom and the heat is sucked out from the top and we had are HVAC put an exhaust out of the room. These are the list of things all ready in the works.

A heat temp GAUGE that will email my cell on certain temperatures (from internally).
A web ping, 5min intervals, service to my cell, so if our website goes down, we know (Externally).
I installed a two hour fire/water prrof safe for intenal BACKUPS and data.

The class was called "Computer Technology"
No, it wouldent be about the fire safety or heating unit information, but, it would go over CONCERNS about the operating conditions of the servers themselves, as well as setting them up, configuring, and making sure they keep running. you might also check out APC's website. They have some products available for cooling in the corporate section.
http://www.apc.com/products/category.cfm?id=9&subid=47Also you will want a cleanguard fire extinguisher sorry forget the rating number for it but if you TALK to the fire extinguisher guy he will know exactlyl what you are asking about. The problem being that while a fire extinguisher may be rated for electrical fires they are generally not rated for server survival. The average electrically rated fire extinguisher will leave a powder residue over everything including the inside of your servers and drives and in short order you will lose them. Hope this helps.nice bump...

Solve : Strange USB Flash Dive problem: drive does not work in all slots?

Sorry I had to reread the post.I didn't know the U3 stuff could even be removed. I'd love to be able to get rid of the ones on my flash drives. I don't think I've ever hated software more then I hate U3. (I wouldn't mind if I could DISABLE it somewhere, but no-)Its possible but I never done it cause I found it useful, does take up a small percent of the drive. But when Patio comes back on he'll tell you if you ask him. He mentioned how to do this once but not sure where it is.Quote from: SanDisk FAQ

Can I remove U3 technology from my USB drive? Yes. To remove the U3 technology from the drive, simply go to the U3 Launchpad and, under Settings, select U3 Launchpad settings and click Uninstall. This will completely remove the U3 Launchpad from the drive.

You can also download an uninstaller from here.

I used the first method.

Thanks for all the posts on this topic. I have not resolved it yet, but then I have not been able to uninstall all six of the Microsoft Updates that were installed between the last successful use of these two Cruzers and the time they failed. I was able to retrieve the list of updates though Dell's "Help & Support" utility, but that is only a LISTING. Add/Remove does NOT have all 6 of the updates listed; it especially does not list the 4 WinXP updates. I uninstalled the other two, but the Cruzer STILL does not connect. If I get a chance this week, I am going to uninstall SP3 and see if that "fixes" the problem (these Cruzers worked after SP3 was installed). I will them do a manual update and add back those 4 updates one at a time to see which one is killing the Cruzer.

Just for clarification, I have an older, non-U3, 2 GB Sandisk Cruser that works FINE. I also have two 1 GB PNY drives that work fine.

Thanks again everyone. I will report back what HAPPENS. I've fallen behind because Comcast IS "provider??" was down here for a few days!!!

Any ideas as to how I can get access to C prompt so I can at least copy data files? I do not have XP Home disks as these are on the reinstall disk, the only option on which is to DELETE all data.

Is an upgrade from XP Home to XP Pro incompatible?Paul,

Unfortunately we were able to locate any additional information regarding your “installation had been stopped to prevent further damage to system” error message. Does the error message have any additional information or error codes that you could provide us with?

One quick suggestion you can try is to disconnect any hardware such as scanners, printers, USB devices, or any other devices that are not required and try running the install again.

It is LIKELY that software or settings in your system are causing conflictions with the Windows XP professional setup; unless you could provide us with any additional information about the error we are unable to provide you with any additional recommendations.

In regards to your question about restoring your computer back to starting point, doing this will most likely erase any data that is currently on the computer.

Finally, it should be possible to upgrade Windows XP home to XP professional.
I know, it says "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" right?I know, it says "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" right? You are right - it says UNMOUNTABLE BOOT VOLUME. How do I get past this? I have downloaded an XP Home and an XP professional boot disk from the web site as I am not sure which system I now have as the upgrade did not complete. When I boot up at the moment I get the XP Pro screen before the blue screen with the above message appears. Will these boot disks enable me to get to the C prompt and therefore get at the data files? Please try the SUGESTION in the below link:

http://www.techtips4u.com/kb/sw/SW00014.htm
XP pro says it is for upgrade only and not an upgrade for XP home. I never got it to install. Thanks Admin for posting this link http://www.techtips4u.com/kb/sw/SW00014.htm
After trying countless other sites this is the one that finally worked. Yay, I now have my computer up and running and my daughter will be soooo happy she doesn't have to 'share' hers with me any more.
Thanks again.
Lorri.

Solve : file saving strangeness?

Answer»

I hope the Gurus here can help me.
I run a live webcasting studio for a department in a Large company. We connect to various meetings around the country and re-broadcast the meeting to people that subscribe to our service. The audio and video programs are captured to either a HARD drive on various computers in my office or on a windows media server accessed through the desktop. we do up to 200 programs a month.
Issue: twice in the last week I have had archived programs that are incomplete, I have the first part of the program, but the last part is missing. when I look at the created and modified by date they show that the stream recording was started on time and ran long enough to capture the program, but the duration shows that it is not all there!
talking to the computer tech guys here they say that the only way to have that happen is if someone stops the archiving and STARTS it up again w/o renaming the file, so it overwrites; but they can't explain why I have the FIRST part of the file. if it was over written should'nt I have only the last part of the file?
Sorry for the long post, but I can't find anyone at work that can explain what is happening to prevent this from happening again.
Thoughts?>
what software are you using to do the archiving? What is it archived to? Tape, DVD, hard drive, NAS? What kind of file is it?In one case the file in question is archived in Windows media format on a windows media server. I don't know for sure what "software" is in the background. we log in and have access to the server; CALL up the channel and setup the archiving by naming the file with our own ID# and the date and month is automatically put on the file name. we then start the channel playing (which is also broadcasting) the archiving is done at the same time.
In the other case, the CONNECTION is a phone or Video connection thru a PolyCom system and the audio or video is sent to a PC that connects to our media server and the archived file is saved on the PC. In the case of the PC connection, if i start the encoder and then try to restart it, it will prompt me about overwriting the existing file.
Okay, now I'm even more lost.....
I would suggest that you keep in contact with your IT department and let them figure out what's going on with the files. They should know what their doing and know exactly where to get help. They're going to be ABLE to do a lot more good than any of us because that's their job. Just keep them informed on what is happening and be very descriptive.

Solve : Security in Email Login?

Answer»

Hi,

Since I'm not too bright when it comes to computer security/privacy, I'd like to know: what is the practical difference between a webmail service that offers a "secure login" only (like Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.) and one that offers a secure connection for the entire webmail session (Lavabit, Fastmail, etc.) ? What, if anything, is vulnerable in the former instance that isn't in the latter ? And how important is it to have one of the latter email services rather than the former ?

Thanks for any comments. Look at your URL and browser security status (the lock image on the status bar at bottom) during login and thereafter. In secure mode, your URL will start with https, not http.

I have Yahoo! account. Yes, the login is occurs in secure mode, i.e. URL begins with https. But, it reverts back to normal mode, i.e. http, after login. An email service that offers a secure connection for the entire webmail sessionwill remain in secure mode, i.e. https, during the entire session. Thus, it's more secure.

Hi, soybean

Thanks for the reply.

I guess I'm wondering exactly what is more secure when the entire session is https. When I'm securely logged in, but NOT in a secure session (as is the case with Yahoo), what is more vulnerable ? Can hackers get access to my drafts or sent messages or something ? Can they read the mails in my inbox ? And why would a service (like Yahoo) go to the trouble of offering secure login and not have a secure session ? Quote from: rememberwhen on July 01, 2008, 12:57:35 PM

Nothing. I don't BELIEVE I said anything that suggested there's something more secure than the entire session is https.

The secure mode (https) is the same mode that all banks and other financial websites use during any session where a user is logged onto an account. It's called SSL (Secure Socket Layer) and it uses encryption to achieve it's security objectives. So, wouldn't you agree Yahoo!'s using of secure mode for the login step, the phase of accessing your account where you enter your password, provides more security than not using secure mode at all (meaning login in would be done via http)? If password entry is secure, that surely reduces that chances of someone gaining unauthorized access to your email account. Granted, the ultimate security is achieved by keeping the entire session in secure mode, but putting the login phase in secure mode still provides a good measure of security.Quote from: soybean on July 01, 2008, 01:38:23 PM

Hi, soybean !

Thanks again for the informative reply.

I'm still a little confused (condition normal ). Chalk it up to my aging GRAY matter.

I understand that secure login in better than non-secure login. But you said in your earlier email:Quote

So, my main point of interest is what is the advantage in going with a provider that has the entire webmail session in a secure mode ? With Yahoo, I get secure login. With Lavabit + Fastmail I get secure login and a secure session. But what does a secure session have that merely a secure login doesn't ? IOW, is my Yahoo webmail session more vulnerable to attack because Yahoo only gave me the secure login and not a secure email session ? Are Lavabit and Fastmail better because they offer secure sessions, not just secure login ?

Thanks for any clarification.

Well, if you're a lawyer or a physician and you're using email to transmit highly confidential information, I'd say use an email service that conducts the entire session in secure mode. But, OTHERWISE, from a practical standpoint, I believe you have nothing to worry about with an email account such as Yahoo! or the popular Google's Gmail, NEITHER of which use secure mode during the entire session.

I think you probably should be more concerned about password security. Use a "strong" password and guard its secrecy and you should have no problem with unauthorized access to your email. See http://www.securitystats.com/tools/password.php for some points on password security.

I once heard a computer consultant talk about security issues. He said he could often guess peoples' passwords after chatting with them because they had used a password based on the name of a spouse, child, family pet, etc. Changing passwords every so often is also important. Thanks for the additional comments, soybean.

Btw, and fwiw, I have heard that one can force Gmail to remain secure through the whole session. I believe one of the ways is through an extension available for FF. I don't use Gmail so I can't confirm it.

Thanks again for all the input !

Solve : PNG images...?

Answer»

Does anyone know why .png images don't appear correctly using operating systems such as Windows 2000 or Windows XP Professional?

I'm at work...and the image in my website's forum header doesn't appear correctly using XP Pro.

However, XP Home EDITION shows the image just fine...

What's up with that?I'm using XP Home and it looks great.

You think it something to do with the BROWSER or maybe the resolution?Looks fine on my Win XP Pro system. Do you have more than one web browser installed? Does it appear the same way in both/all?It's IE6, it can't render transparent backgrounds on png images, it renders the background grey instead.
IE7, Firefox, and other browsers render the transparent background, well, transparently.
Hope this helps.Thanks guys...

It is IE6, come to think of it...it has to be the browser. Other browsers seem to display it properly. ...IE7, Firefox, Opera, SAFARI...

Makes you WONDER why the corporate arena doesn't update their systems. Guess it has to do with the software environment...since some corporate applications only work with IE6.

Thanks for the quick replies...much appreciated. You're welcome.
I've had to work round this before with websites, I'm just thankful that IE7 actually fixed this as I wasn't expecting much to be honest.
I guess the fact that they haven't updates IE6 yet is probably company policy, possibly laziness. Most places do seem to follow the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mantra.I'm actually a BIG fan of the mantra, "If it ain't broke, fix it til it is"

Solve : OK This should be last thread about moving 10 GB?

Answer»

Thanks for all your efforst so far.

Moving it over the internet was definately not going to work.

I have arranged to have someone take a 12GB thumb drive to my other COMPUTER and use a USB to download these files.

Because they have to wait there ..........how long should it take to move this much information onto the THUMBDRIVE?

It depends on how fast the writing speed of the USB is.

I recently got a new 2GB USB and it TOOK about 10 minutes to copy 1.2GB over.
Then again, it was 8000 files.

So copying 10GB to a Flash Drive could take anywhere from 5 to 40 minutes or more....

Solve : Windows XP Service Pack 3 download page?

Read through the "Brief Description" and tell me if anything sounds... out of place...

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=68c48dad-bc34-40be-8d85-6bb4f56f5110&displaylang=enMicrosoft is giving free downloads for Win XP?!?!?! That's just SP3.

Quote

Download Size:97 KB
That ain't right.

EDIT: if you scroll down, it appears there are just text documents up for download. The only thing I can find (of any question) within the paragraph titled "Brief Description" is the following comment:

Quote
This update also includes a small number of new functionalities, which do not significantly change customers’ experience with the OPERATING system.

Since this is just an overview...the text file downloads are just available for informational purposes only.

It also makes reference that SP3 also includes previously released UPDATES. My question is why include the previously released updates...if SP3 only adds additional functionalitites that the average end user won't need anyway?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I don't see anything else out of place...

Can you enlighten us a little?Quote

This download is only a document that tell you what SP3 includes.crap that would be awesome if microsoft was giving XP away free i was really wanting windows movie maker but i have win 2k so im stuck. Here is standalone download: http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/windows-xp-service-pack-3.htmlTo get it directly from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5b33b5a8-5e76-401f-be08-1e1555d4f3d4&DisplayLang=enThere is so musch confusion in this thread if this was offtopic I would drop the lolwut pear now.Maybe a recap will clear up the confusion.

quaxo's original post was incorrect. Basically, he did not study the Microsoft web page he posted carefully ENOUGH before starting this thread. If he had reviewed it more carefully, he would have realized the download files available from the web page are not the actual SP3 file, but info about SP3.

Then, Broni posted a link to a third-party, i.e. not Microsoft, web site from which SP3 can be downloaded. I'd rather get the file directly from Microsoft, so I posted a link for it.

That's the essence of this thread.I aint Downloadin This

What? SP3? The documentation about it? And, why not?No no no...

My comment was about that they called it a "white paper" in the summary... even though it's a file.

In my opinion, any files in the Windows, or System folders, should be LEFT alone.

How big are the files?
Why do you WANT to delete them?there are just a lot of them and i am trying to get more speed from my computer ... would like to get rid of UNNECESSARY logs, temp files, etc.To delete temp files, use CCleaner or another program that knows what it's doing. You may want to start here.Quote
