Solve : wiped drive?

Answer»

I know this is going to sound easy but I have tried and exhausted all advice. I have 2 computers on my desk at home one is mine and is empty except for the basic DOS and that is all it will do nothing at all the best I can get it to do is say "that APPLICATION (or program ) cannot be read in dos mode" when I put in a floppy. I am trying to get a version of Linux on it I have the CD for Fedora core 1 but I cannot get it onto the COMPUTER. It will not recognize my cd drive. I realize I probably need a driver but have YET to find a floppy version that the computer will open. * The other computer seems to have a boot problem it boots into a loop I can boot it into DOS with the same DOS boot disk as the other computer but I can't seem to figure out what it needs unfortunatly since the second is not mine it is not a priority since I am a non-traditional Computer student trying to finnish classwork. my classmates all have different ideas about the problem, unfortunatly, none are correct, yet. I am getting desparate. I know there is probably some basic clue I am missing. Or I am not as bright as I thought. If anyone can help or at least POINT me in the right direction I would be eternally grateful. :-/
If the computer is not recognizing the CD drive when you're booting from the floppy it's most likely that the floppy does not contain the necessary files to load the CD-ROM drive. May want to use a different boot disk, or create a boot diskette with the appropriate drivers. You could also use the boot disks from http://www.bootdisk.com

Also often many of the Linux distributions on CD are bootable. May want to try booting from the CD and see if that works. If you cannot boot from the CD make sure that your boot options are properly setup in CMOS.If your BIOS is so old that booting from a CD is not possible, you need the Smart Boot Manager. Have a look for it in the software FAQ (see the LINK in my signature).

Solve : My record collection?

Answer»

I do not remember if I posted about this or not. I've got a big record collection, and I do mean big. Most of my records are 45s, as well as a few 78s. (Both are by Elvis Presley.) I also have a list of LPs, but it's not updated. Anyways, here's the list. If you're going to post a reply, make sure you look through the entire list first. There are 32 pages. There's two types of records I have: Singles and albums. The singles are listed here. If anybody wants to see what albums I have, I'll have to put up a list. That might take me a little while.

http://members.aol.com/rdm6190/Single_record_collection.doc

You might notice that I'm lacking when it comes to The Miracles... I intend to get more records by them.

Boo, no Ink Spots! But kudos on The Coasters, Donovan, The Troggs, and The Turtles. It's a nice collection, but it seems a bit unorganized. Either that, or I'm not catching on to how you're ordering everything. You're not catching on to the order of the records. The artists are in the correct order, as are the records. I have the records organized first under the artists, and then by the release. The older records come first by each artist. The Beatles are the largest entry in my record collection.Yes,I have a good Califone portable record player.

You know, I just typed up this big spiel about how your artists aren't in alphabetical order and they seem to just jump around, and as I was giving a really good example, I realized what the problem was... When an artist includes an actual person's name, you categorize it by last name. I totally didn't catch that until now. Sorry for attempting to call you out on it. Ha. Because of an abundance of psuedonyms (and how things are AUTOMATICALLY alphabetized on the computer), I always just go by first NAMES, so I didn't know what was going on.

Anyway, it's a nice collection you have. I'm tempted to catalog my own collection (I swear, I'm obsessed with making lists). It's not nearly as big as yours, but I've got some albums I'm fairly proud of. You should look into seeing if there's a program for cataloging records. I mean, there's one for DVD's and one for books...I'm sure there must be something out there for records.Does any one have any Wolfe Tones records?Quote

Solve : Amazing disappearing files!?

Answer»

Quote

If this is any help, when I ran the check disk function it came up with various lines, as per the following:

File record segment 20824.29 34067.55
Deleting index entries
Recovering lost files
Verifying security descriptors
Verifying the data
Windows replaced bad cluster

All my music is back now and windows media player can find it all.

Peace out
Timmo
As Patio said, it was a disk error. (Back up all your important data in case it happens again!)
Ok, for each line of text, I have a responce

File record segment 20824.29 34067.55
Deleting index entries
>>INDEXES of your files, probably, but not the Windows Search index
Recovering lost files
>>This is when it looked for the bits and PIECES of lost information and got them back together again (kind of complicated)
Verifying security descriptors

Verifying the data
>>It checked the restored data
Windows replaced bad cluster
>>Windows looked at your disk, and marked all the bad clusters as bad. Only a program MADE to directly modify the disk (like a reformat tool) WOULD BYPASS this note. It would be certain data dammage if a file was placed here again

Solve : Where is the copy right on the keyboard?

Answer»

Hi all,
This is probably silly, but is there a COPY right (a C inside a circle ) symbol on the keyboard and how do I get to it , if not can anyone tell me of some software that will do the job

Thanks
nedSome applications will SUPPORT the command:
CTRL+ALT+C for the copyright symbol.

Or ALT+0169
(thats holding alt and then typing 0169)Thanks,
But I TRIED both in photoshop with no luck,

I just verified the above in my version of Adobe Photoshop and had no issues. Try the following:

1. In Photoshop click the horizontal text tool to insert text.
2. In the Type Tool press and hold Alt and while holding alt type 0169 on the key pad.Word, Excel, WordPad, or even Notepad will work. I MEAN the Alt/0169 technique works with them. Ctrl/Alt/C also works with Word.

ned1, what key on your keyboard has the copyright symbol? What character types when you hit that key?If all else fails, you could GO to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Character Map. Find the the © symbol, click on it, click on Select, and click on Copy. You can then paste it wherever needed. It's not the most efficient method, though.

Solve : Why NOT to use Auto-Reply?

Answer»

Some Email programs or ISPs allow you to have an Auto-Reply feature for your email account. Don't do it. Here's a transcript of a chat I just got done with with a friend of mine. (Note: He's not normally this grammatically inept, just on chat):

Hey, Dan! Where'ya been?
cleaning out my email
?
i went over my gig limit
...
How?
you know my auto email?
Yeah. I tell my OE to just trash it.
i emailed some guy about his site, and he had an auto reply
Uh-Oh...
yeah
Long story short, we auto replyd about ten thousand TIMES till i was over the limit
!!
yeah i had to call my isp and make them dlelte it
*delete

Doesn't that sound like fun? Heh. Yeah that does sound like fun.

I seem RECALL a while back virus scanners (believe McAfee was the primary culprit but don't quote me) SENDING out e-mail notifications about an e-mail being infected after a WORM went out and infected auto-replies being sent back and getting into a big loop and causing several mail servers to be shut down because of the auto-replies being sent back to the original sender often a spoofed e-mail.

I too don't like the idea of auto-replies and out-of-office replies. But apparently some people need to use them so don't think it will be DISAPPEARING any time soon. Always fun sending out thousands of e-mails for newsletter subscribers and getting hundreds of auto-replies and out-of-office replies back. Thank goodness for filters. ROFL

Our (as in the site I get to design) has a webserver from www.hostgator.com that somehow bypasses this problem

I tried to see if this would happen or not, but it didnt

But wow... no we know how to take down Microsoft Windows Live replacement server

Solve : Getting files off disc?

Answer»

I used to have an HP that ran Windows 98 (not SE). I was getting rid of it, so I put all of my files on a cd, including many hidden files. After I wrote the cd, I double-checked it on the HP to MAKE sure all of the files were there. The HP was then reformatted and given to a non-profit. So here is the problem now. All of hidden files that were written to the disc will not show up. There are 78 files that do show up, totaling 12.5MB. There is visibly more than 12.5MB written to the disc. I've tried showing hidden files under folder options, etc. (Which I did, too, before I wrote the disc, in order to add them to the queue for burning.) I've tried to access them on 4 different computers, including my Mac. I am devastated if these files are not accessible; it's EVERYTHING I have done for the past 10 years. (I even titled the disc "My Entire Life.") It's stupid, I KNOW I should have "un-hidden" them before burning, but it didn't even really cross my mind at the time.

Solve : Is it a profile problem??

Answer»

hey guys,

it's 5:55a.m. and I can't do this anymore. i'm having email issues with my website. i wasn't sure where to post so here i am.

i have a website that i created using a wysiwyg (i'm sure the purist are cringing right now) everything uploaded fine. my paypal account seems to be working etc etc.

my first problem, my customer information is being forwarded but through my husbands email, redirected to my email. we do share this computer but my husband is the administator and the profile settings are his. so is this the reason for the redirect? also, would this be a possible reason why i'm not getting any emails from my "contact us" links? i've checked all the email addresses all the links are highlighted on my site, i'm just not getting the mail.

how about this too. i set up an email account (hoping to have a strictly business email) on lunarpages no luck receiving email there either. i did receive ONE when i asked my son to test for me he was using firefox and email WORKED both receiving and sending.

i'm using a TOSHIBA satelite, intel core 2 cpu,[emailprotected] w.99gb of ram, java version 6, adobe flashplayer 9.124.0. lunarpages is my hosting site. toweb by lauyan is the webddesign software.

any suggestions? and please, oh please make them simple. my brain is so fried.I have never heard of that program and WYSIWYG is certainly cringe-worthy and [in my opinion] UNRELIABLE. Could you perhaps post a link to your web site so we can take a look at it? If you would FEEL more comfortable, you can send it to me in a Personal Message.

Solve : IS IT CHEAPER TO UPGRADE OR PURCHASE A NEW COMPUTER?

Answer»

I currently have a Compaq Presario Intel 4 processor, 2.6GHZ, 512MB with Windows XP Home Edition. The computer is 4 1/2-yrs. old and the monitor is a 17" NEC CRT model (older than the computer). A week ago, I turned on my computer and the screen and colors were off. A NEC technician indicated that I might need a new video card. Considering the age of my computer and monitor, is it cheaper to purchase a new one in the form of a bundle package (computer/monitor) or should I upgrade my current computer and purchase a new monitor? I have read bad press about Windows Vista and I am currently pleased with my Windows XP which is one reason I am fearful of purchasing a new computer. First, I would want to confirm whether the monitor is the cause of the problem, not the video card. Can you connect your monitor to another computer to test it? Or, borrow another monitor to connect your computer to verify the NEC tech's assertion that the video card is the problem.

If the video card is the problem, I'd replace the card rather than buy a new computer unless you think you need a new system for specific reasons.

Are you familiar with the different types of expansion slots? You need to know whether your computer has an AGP slot or only PCI. I'm assuming it does not have the newer PCI Express slots. If you have AGP, get an AGP video card, not a PCI card. Thanks so much for responding.

Fortunately, I did have an older model computer waiting to be donated. After connecting the monitor to that computer, the monitor worked well. I re-connected the monitor back to my current computer (one described here) and the colors changed to the colors when I first purchased my computer. This happen after connecting the monitor to the computer and not doing anything else. I thought that was so odd. So, far I am not having any PROBLEMS. Can you explain what could have happen and why is it working ok without my making any changes? Does it mean the video card may be on its way out?

I know very little about computers but I happed to save a printed version of my computer specs from 2004 and I see is says the following: TOTAL EXPANSION SLOTS: 3 PCI, 1 AGP /AVAILABLE EXPANSION SLOTS: 2 PCI, 1 AGP
So, I guess that means I have the AGP slot. Just some general thoughts ...... IMO upgrading machines of several years age is not always going to be all that easy - in order to ensure compatibility between all the hardware if some old and some new. All depends of course on the depth of an upgrade.

You certainly could tweak the old machine usefully by adding more RAM and a good vid card.

The NEC monitor should work on any machine with a reasonable card - and just the regular VGA cable connection. Before I went LCD I was using NEC 21" Accusync units and they worked on anything. Did find tho that a better quality card did yield better definition.

The problem with upgrading is deciding how much to do and invest - as beyond a certain point a new machine could well be worth considering - as long as the spec' is adequate - you need to look in depth at bundled packages to make sure you spot the corners that so often get cut!

One useful approach is to set a budget - and see then what you can do comparing new with an upgrade. techoforless and newegg have LOTS of hardware available - just look carefully at spec's to either get the right PCI type or - with AGP be sure to get a card that your mobo can handle. On that subject - you may want to CHECK you have Directx 9 on board. You monitor cable may simply not have been securely connected to your computer when you were having the problem. The end on the cable has two screws you need to turn in to secure it to the connector on the computer, right? Make sure you get the cable end properly seated and the screws snuggly tightened when connecting it.

If your AGP slot is truly available, that indicates it's not being used, which also means your system has onboard, or integrated, video. In other words, the video adapter is built-in to the motherboard and that's what you're using. If so, you could upgrade your system by disabling onboard video and installing and AGP card. But, since the problem seems to have been solved, this is entirely an optional matter; it's just a possible upgrade option to improve performance.

Video cards installed in expansion slots usually out-perform onboard/integrated video, often yielding very noticeable improvement in performance. But, of course, the benefit to be recognized will also depend on what you normally do with your computer. Today's Best Buy sale paper has a Dell Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9300, 6GB DDR2 memory/750GB hard drive computer with a 19" LCD monitor and Canon All-In-One Printer for $999.97. It is also OFFERING no interest for 2-yrs. on all purchases totaling $999. All reviews about this computer/monitor/printer were great. Everyone said the Windows Vista worked great and no one expressed having problems with installing other software with Vista on this computer. I am thinking if I purchase this one, I should be able to have it for quite some time considering the memory and hard drive and my current computer would be a great backup. What is someone's else' opinion? Quote

6GB DDR2 memory
It looks like 64-bit Vista.
Be aware, that some applications won't be compatible.BRONI,

Please explain when you say, "it looks like a 64-bit Vista." Is that a good and/or bad thing? What type of applications do you feel will not be compatible? The only programs I will probably install will be Microsoft Office and a Norton antivirus. In simple terms, the basic difference between 32- and 64-bit systems is the way, they handle RAM.
32-bit system supports up to 4GB of RAM (in real life only little bit over 3GB is used).
64-bit system can handle up to 16GB of RAM.
Since the computer in question has 6GB of RAM installed, I assume it's 64-bit.

Solve : Custom PC running warm Mite be why??

Answer»

I had recently put in a large heatsink to disapate the heat away from the cpu since this is a gaming machine. However, I thought it had solved the problem but three hours or so latter the alert went off that my cpu was too warm. I have a rear fan a front fan an a side one with a ram cooling fan. It usally runs like 93 degrees an after a while it gets up to about 129 which is the yellow area. Program called intel active monitor reads in ferinhite. My dad recemmoned a larger heat sink since it had heating problems before. Got a large copper heatsink from Thermalright inc, sorry I cant say more but time limited. Its a Intel SE7210TP1-E socket 478 not sure if you will find it if you want the specs cause it mite bring up a tawian board so its ether a O or 0, Pent 4 with at least 2.8 ghz, DDR Ram, RADEON x1300 VIDEO card, HDA X-plosion 7.1 auido card, nic, two sata drives one 320 the other 160, floppy an dvd bunner. Anything else? Also the side panel an ram fan an the front panel burn blue leds not sure if this would change the temp a whole lot. Its not bad when I have the AC running but some days it goes on an off. The monitoring software says that when it starts its about 88 to 90 degrees. The BIOS says its about 100 degrees? when it cold boots. The numbers are posted in Fahrenheit.

So I talked with a tech my dad works with. He said that the cpu mite be overclocked. How do I tell. Never messed with it. Not saing that it isnt set high.Quote from: squall_01 on August 08, 2008, 06:42:01 PM

... I have a rear fan a front fan an a side one with a ram cooling fan. It usally runs like 93 degrees an after a while it gets up to about 129 which is the yellow area. ...

I've never seen a system with a front fan. Which direction are all those fans blowing? In or out?

If by chance you have front and back both blowing from outside to in, then they are working against each other. Just a thought.Good point, thought that it would take in cool air an realse the hot from inside it.It should be blowing at the HARDWARE. Even you should know that. yeah, but I cant figure out which way there going. Sorry it just a me thing.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 09, 2008, 08:19:52 PM
It should be blowing at the hardware. Even you should know that.

One of them should be blowing at the hardware and the other should be blowing away to remove the hot air. Or maybe that side fan is so big it can suck out the air blown in by both of the other fans, unless it's blowing in also.

The point is, you want maximum air flow. If both or all three fans are blowing IN and none is blowing OUT, you may be getting less than the maximum across the cooling fins. The fact that it's getting hot suggests there might be an airflow problem.

On most systems I've had, there is one fan blowing into the power supply, and sometimes a second fan below it blowing in toward the CPU, with no exhaust fan. Vents on the front of the case allows the air to escape (rushing over the hard drive as it goes to keep it cool too).I have one in the front so that it keeps the hd cool an blows in the cool air. These are all 80 mm fans except the fan cooling the RAM. I tried to get it so that it blow cool air in on the part so that the CPU remains cooled. Yes there is GREASE applied. Maybe I should have it so it goes out the back?

Solve : Moved Topics?

Answer»

Currently when a post has been moved, it is noted that the post was moved on the board listings:

ex: MOVED: Fn keys in CMD.EXE

However you have to open the thread to find the link to the new location. How difficult would it be to make the notification itself the redirected link?

This never seemed to be a ISSUE, but lately posts are being relocated with increasing frequency.

So instead of clicking the topic title and then the link inside, just click the topic title?sounds good maybe a button next to it called

Redirect to moved thread?

What if an admin has to get BACK to that thread?Actually...just moving the thread...without leaving a redirect, would be the simplest solution...IMHO.

If someone is looking for a thread they started...and it was moved...it should still be listed within their Profile Summary Stats. The actual thread is not deleted...just moved.

Of course, someone who bookmarks their original thread may be shocked when it is no longer there, but still...it can be FOUND...all they have to do is look for their most recent posts within their own profile(s).If you link to a thread that has been moved, you will be redirected to the moved topic.Well then...there ya go!Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 09, 2008, 05:32:55 AM

So instead of clicking the topic title and then the link inside, just click the topic title?

Precisely. Don't really need a button, the topic title can act as the redirect.

Seems counterproductive. How many people CHECK their Profile Summary Stats? How many even know where to find their Profile Summary Stats?

It seemed that if the program can add Moved: to the topic title, it could easily recreate the new title as a link to the new location instead of embedding it in the thread.

Solve : Dual layer burners?

Answer»

Can someone please tell me if my DVD burner, an Atapi DVD A DH16A1L can burn dual layer DVD'S
glenaftonLook at its front panel. If it can, it should have DL letters printed.Broni,
UNFORTUNATELY for me my burner does not have the DL on the front. Many thanks for your help.
glenaftonSorry, Broni, but that's inaccurate. Not all DL burners have DL on the front. Most burners made after about 2003 are DL capable. My LG GSA 4160B is DL capable and it doesn't have those letters. The Philips-Lite-On DVD A DH16A1L is definitely dual layer capable. Often seen rebadged as HP.

Many dual layer burners are fussy about brands of DL discs. My LG is one such. I only got reliable results with Verbatim discs which are more expensive. This may be why the question arose.

Wow, I did a search on that drive you specified. Nada.

Are you sure that's the model of the drive?

Logic lesson: your lack of SEARCHING success is not indicative of my being mistaken.

A tip: cut out IRRELEVANT detail from the search TERM, in this case the unique drive ID is "DH16A1L".

A further tip: Do not challenge my Google searching skills, as I am the king of searchers.

DVD burner model numbers tend to be unique, and this is how we can unravel mysteries caused by rebadging. The "ATAPI DVD A DH16A1L" is a pretty well known Philips Lite-On model, often rebadged (e.g. by HP) for inclusion in branded PCs.

Model as quoted by OP

(I think he or she may imagine that "Atapi" is the manufacturer, whereas in simple terms it is just another way of saying "IDE", and is usually written ATAPI.)

Solve : I.T. JOBS ??

Hello everyone I'm just now getting into the Pro aspect of PC meaning I have some know how but don't know everything. Iv recently began on-line training at Penn Foster and was wondering what comes next after that. I know i cant walk into IBM or Apple and drop a resume and say I'm your guy. So i guess what I'm ASKING is where do i START after this, its going very fast and I'm sure ILL need more training as well. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what i should do for maybe a very small job at the bottom of the I.T. Job food chain. I'm actually doing the same THING you are
so an answer would be nice for me as well Penn foster as well?I'm on the VERGE of getting my first degree and hopefully a couple of certificates, so I'm pretty much in the same boat. What I'm currently doing is applying for every computer-related job I can find. Data entry, repairs, troubleshooting...if I'm even remotely qualified for it, I apply for it. Check out all of computer shops in your area and see if you can get your foot in the door of somewhere like Geek Squad or Firedog. And post your résumé on all of the job sites like Monster, HotJobs, etc. Heck, you may even want to post on Craigslist. You basically have to flood the computer market with yourself. Of course, I still don't have a job, so maybe you'll want to try the complete opposite. Ha.any luck at all finding a jobNope, I pretty much have the worst luck when it comes to finding a job. I've been looking for about a year now and I can't even get hired at McDonald's.Hahahahahah. I heard that im a truck driver and i can even find a job doing that unless i want to not be homeYeah, that's the one thing I've been offered a position for, but it requires being gone for six weeks at a time!

Solve : Might be a stupid question but I really need an answer?

Answer»

My friend has been working online for a mortgage company. She has received all kinds of detailed information about the location of the company, the Manager, and the Supervisor. However, she was supposed to be paid on July 22nd, and still hasn't received her salary yet.

I looked into some of the emails she has gotten from them and found out by looking up the IP addresses that they are coming from Ghana and Nigeria and not from the location they are claiming to be from. I am trying to prove to her that the company and manager she is receiving emails from is from Nigeria and Ghana.

She then told the manager about the information and he stated that the reason it was showing up as coming from different places is because they are on a rotationary server. They are supposed to be from Seattle, Washington. I tried looking up rotationary server on Google to see if it exist and I can't seem to find any information anywhere.

If anyone can please tell me if this is true or not I'd really appreciate it. The manager is supposed to be a computer technician so she needs some kind of information to back herself up when she tells him it doesn't exist. (that's if it doesn't exist anyway)

Thanks to anyone who helps. The next request should be for your friend to send her bank account details, including any online PASSWORDS, to Ghana/Nigeria so that her salary can be paid into her account, if she hasn't already parted with the details.

It's a variation of the great Nigerian scam and if she has already parted with her account details she better advise her bank pronto or she could be cleaned out big time!!!

Try finding the company name in a Seattle business directory.

Quote

the reason it was showing up as coming from different places is because they are on a rotationary server.
The only rotation will be your friend going round in ever decreasing circles.

See here....

Another current scam is overseas companies wishing to channel invoice payments thru' individual's accounts for which each individual would be paid large sums. This is money laundering, generally from illegal sources (drug sales etc), and is soon picked up by banking/federal SECURITY authorities. The laundering is in itself illegal and the penalities can be severe.

Good luckIt definitely sounds like a scam, but just out of curiosity, what's the name of this company? And what exactly does your friend do for them?i doubt they would have a server that they route to in africa, from western america. it would be a mess of a lag. i'd say that its a scam. the rule i live by is never expect to get paid for stuff over the internet. i would never give some one my personal information like that. i'd say your friend should report to an authority and see where they say to go with it. the last thing that you want is your friend getting in trouble for something she/he had no idea they were a part of. It is almost certainly a scam. You "work from home"; they send you some kind of fake work, (or the promise of it) some kind of typing work USUALLY, but they want your bank details! That's the objective. They prey on the, er, gullible.

Confidence tricksters ("SCAMMERS") trap people who are greedy or desperate. Believing you can make money via the web marks you as gullible. You end up on a scammers list of potential victims.

Solve : Song at startup????

Answer»

Is there a way that you can add your own song to the startup of windows xp? If you could, wouldn't that be soooooo cool!!!!?

thx

Yes, there is, but, I should warn you, LONG songs can make your computer take a little while longer.

If it still seems worth while, find that song that you want, and then go to:
Start> Control Panel> and find "Sound" or "Hardware and Sound" (whichever it is in Windows XP)
Find "Windows Startup" (or "Startup") click it, and browse for your song.

Its pretty self explanatory once you have the sound control panel opened. I've got it to play a Remix of the Windows Startup Sound I made. How long with the player play after the Welcome screen? I cannot play a full length track, it cuts off after about 45 secs.

Ta.Quote from: Dusty on August 01, 2008, 09:31:33 PM

Ta.
Thats right, and it should cut off. It would be a bit ridiculous to load an entire song into memory just to play at startup, SINCE it can slow down your computer. (ESPECIALLY shut down NOISES, which the computer pauses the shutdown process all-together to play)
If you really want an entire song to play at startup, you can:
Create a Scheduled Task at Startup to open the desired music file. It should open the file without opening Windows Media Player, though it might open Media Player in an older OS. Wait I dont remember this thread how does pauda keep coming back?

Solve : Want to talk PC to International Mobile, can this be done??

Answer»

I was STATIONED in the Philippines and met some real great friends. I can't keep in touch much because it costs way to much to call from the US to the Philippines. Does anyone know of any way, or any web sites, where I can call free from my PC to their mobile phones? Anything would be helpful, don't know where to start looking. Thanks.......Free? No, unfortunately, you cant do that anymore.
What you are talking about is VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol)

There are 4 services I would recommend:

SKYPE - http://skype.com/

Vonage - http://www.vonage.com/index.php?ic=1
Vonage is typically CONNECTED to your home phone, but, they have recuperate SOFTWARE-only versions that just use a mic in a computer

Yahoo - http://voice.yahoo.com/
MSN has a similar service, but, I couldn't find the information about it on the internet.

I would really try out Skype, which does have a trial. Skype tends to have better pricing options, and their software is not likely to crash on you. I have used Skype quite a bit for PC to PC calls, and PC to phone calls. (Skype had a thing where they allowed PC users to call phones for free, mainly to GET more users faster. It was quite popular.)

For any of these, you will need an analog or USB microphone and a headset. To avoid getting a very annoying echo, do not use your regular computer speakers, they will pick up over the mic.

Solve : Red Line?

Answer»

*censored*, this continual rain in florida, the other day i was taking my laptop out the car in the flippin rain and trying to hold the umbrella, and my sony vaio slipped out my hands onto the road into the water, i am devasted, anyhow its kind of messed on the TOP, but as i put it on it showed a SLIGHT water mark in the right hand corner, and just lines, so i put it on its SIDE as to let the water run out, and left it that way, the next day i switched it on, and its what i am using now, the cam works, and all appears ok, the only thing is the thin red LINE down the middle, i did call sony as i wanted to send it in, and they gave me 3 options at 3 different rates, from Indionesia, the first just a NORMAL service, $99, then another as an overall of $699, then the last being $899 because she said the the red means the LCD is damged and with continual use its gonna get worse, now is this all true, and i want to fix it all but i am not sure what to fix, can anyone advise Bad luck - but perhaps not as bad as it might have been.

The Sony diagnosis is probably correct but heck - they want some money to work on it huh!!! Major cost.

I really think I'd soldier on using it and even if it does worsen over time - start saving and put money aside for an eventual new machine. If possible get - if you haven't already got - an external drive and back up all important data on an external drive... or at very least keep your stuff on a large USB stick.

Bottom line - no fix you can do I fear.I agree. If you can't get hold of another LCD screen for the laptop, you will have to send it in.

Is it not under Warranty? There's a place out here that would fix it for $50, but you'd be without your laptop for a few weeks. Heh. I don't know what the market is like where you live, but you should call around and see what kinds of prices you can find.

Solve : USING SOLAR CHARGER TO CHARGE A LAPTOP? ????

Answer»

today i just brought a solar charger witch has a plug to fit my laptop, i plug it in and the computer doesn't say its charging and doesent CHARGE, the solar charger charges other things but not my laptop.

i know the solar charger doesent PUT out enough power to fully charge the laptop (only 2.2w) and a laptop needs around 13w, but why cant it slowly put a small amount of power in to keep add some extra life to the battery when away form any mains power?

(is this a question about solar CHARGERS or computers? i decided to do it here)

any help would be great

harry...Not an expert here but, if the laptop needs 13w and the charger is only giving 2w, it's not going to charge the laptop. It might make it last longer though.

Then again, I'm not sure.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on August 01, 2008, 10:05:41 AM

Then again, I'm not sure.

thats what i want to do just make it last longer but i need to get it to do that Again, I'm not really sure here but I think it is too small for the computer to recognize.

Don't worry, someone will be along shortly.
In the MEAN time, try timing it like leave the computer idle and time it how long the battery charge goes down 5% with and without the charger plugged in.
That may prove useful.Taking a typical lap batt as 14.8 @ 4000mA ..... the main thing with charging, as with any battery, is that the input (charging) voltage needs to be greater than the battery base voltage.

Example - a 12V car battery will often receive a charging voltage of something approaching 14v and finish up fully charged at someting close to 13v.

The wattage rating of your solar deal is academic - what matters is that it has enough output voltage to ''push'' current in for charge. The lower wattage only means that the current output is on low side - meaning that if the voltage was enough, the charge rate would be a slow ''trickle''.

My question for now is - what is the output voltage of this charger - check with a meter. If designed for this purpose then I'd hope it has enough panels within itself to achieve a high enough voltage - and then act as a trickle charger . It'd take a large panel set indeed (series/parallel config) to power a laptop on its own so we are LOOKING for a degree of ''top-up'' - the battery buffering the charge and hopefully slowing its discharge rate when laptop in use.according to the box it came in and a switch on the solar charger it can output 6v - 12v or 7.v, so i need a voltage the same or higher than the battery's voltage to push the current through? the wattage is low (2.2w) but I'm not too bothered as long it at least slowly trickle charges. i think the battery can charge on 12v as my in car laptop charger is 12v and it charges. Check the label on your laptop batt' ........ useful to know that. Charging from a car batt' can work I have heard but wonder what a unit actually delivers ..... often a charger will quote an output voltage under load - whereas with no load it will often be higher - thus giving the ''push'' to enable a charge. I haven't explored the charger units that run off a car's 12v system.

Think of the water analogy - treating a head of water as voltage (pressure) - the trend is for higher pressure to go toward lower, and to get volume flow (amps) the gradient needs to be in favor of the supply (charger volts) exceeding the recipient (battery) volts. Hope that makes some sense!Just so you know, UBB code doesn't work in titles. I edited it to make it a bit easier to read.

Seems like most say to burn a VCD or SVCD.

Good luck!Yeah, you will need to look for an .avi to DVD converter.

I have this on one of my computers:
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/?ap=avangate&aid=1891

It works pretty well. It is pretty expensive though, about $160 USD.
It was a gift to my grandfather though.you will need a program like the one Carbon Dudeoxide recommended, or you will need to purchase a DivX compatible DVD player. if you plan on burning alot of movies, i strongly suggest PURCHASING a DivX compatible DVD player. reason being, converted AVI files take up alot more room then straight AVI files. for example, a SHOW i like to watch has all its episodes in AVI format. if i convert the AVI files i can only burn 10 episodes to a 4.7gb blank DVD, whereas if i dont convert the AVI files, i can fit up to 23 episodes onto one 4.7gb blank DVD.

an added note, PowerIso is a good, free, utility for burning AVI files straight to DVD's.This thread ought to win the "Least informative title" prize for JULY. Quote from: Dias de verano on July 26, 2008, 03:33:07 AM

ROXIO is INSTALLED and formerly worked fine, until I installed Itunes. Any suggestions? Tnx. DixieflashTry CDBurnerXP one more time.

Solve : MS Word - Picture toolbar cropping tool?

Answer»

I have a problem with importing EMF FILES into a Word document because I cannot access the cropping tool on the picture toolbar.

EMF files are imported as WHOLE pages. You then right click on the imported page to bring up the 'show picture toolbar' ,and then click on this to bring up the toolbar. The idea is you use the cropping tool to cut the page down to size and leave only the image you want without distorting the image in any way. Unfortunately, the cropping tool stays grey and I can't access it.

The strange thing is that I used to be able to do this, and then all of a sudden I found I couldn't.

Any suggestions gratefully received.

Topic title adjustedI'm not familiar with the EMF format. Perhaps you could edit the image using photo editing software and then import it into Word. If Microsoft Paint will recognize EMF files, it might do the job. Otherwise, there may be some freeware alternative that would serve your purpose.

I know this is not an answer to your question of why Word's resizing handle is not available. If you can post a website where I can download an EMF file, I'll try importing into Word and resizing. What version of Word are you using?Thank you for this very HELPFUL suggestion. The original files are in a specialised music writing package (Sibelius). I find I can save them as Bitmap files and CROP them using Adobe Photoshop, and this does the job. It STILL doesn't look quite as good as it did when I was able to save them as EMF files. I will see if I have Microsoft Paint and try again.

I use Word XP. Unfortunately I do not know how to post a website with examples. Your suggestion does however mean I can get the job done.

Many thanks once again. Dermot

Solve : ditch your screensaver??

Answer»

I just saw this article on yahoo. The author says that screensavers are a thing of the past and they actually do more harm than good because they take up more power to run the screensaver than not. He also says that LCDs don't get burn in.
This guy obviously has never tried running any tests to verify his rant. If you leave an image on your screen for a couple weeks, the lcd will start to get burn in. It happens where I work quite often, which is why I have started scheduling screensavers to run overnight and on the weekends. The effects of burn in are not as permanent as they are on crt monitors, however. With an LCD, you can unplug it for a day or so and it will fix itself. I would have been okay with the article if he would have mentioned that, but he's just another uninformed writer that is spreading his made up exaggerations to more clueless READERS, which results in mass hysteria.
Sigh.
I always turn my screen off if I'm not using it, and my PC also runs a blank screensaver and turns off the video if left for 5 minutes.
Screensavers aren't as important as they used to be, but they're certainly not a thing of the past.I keep mine blank BTW CALUM did you get your avator problem fixedYes I did thanks.

Don't forget also that screensavers are sometimes used as an indicator to some programs that the machine is idle, and they will then start work.
For example, Windows automatically defragments certain files, mainly the boot files, when the screensaver is active. With no screensaver, this won't happen. That's why I keep a blank screensaver, even though my video card will switch off when it becomes active anyway.Quote from: Calum on June 24, 2008, 01:20:22 PM

Are you sure? I don't have a screensaver installed but after quite some idle time the HD light is going crazy...Well, I'll rephrase then - for me, nothing happened without a screensaver set.
If I didn't set one, the automatic defrag didn't happen.I have Microsoft's Blue Screen Of Death Screensaver.Quote from: Calum on June 24, 2008, 01:20:22 PM

How can you tell the automatic defragmentation is running?Hard drive activity, and files being less fragmented than before.
If I leave my computer running with no screensaver activated, my HDD doesn't show any extra activity as it would if a defrag was running.isn't this a separate setting? "OPTIMIZE hard disk when idle" I think...

System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\
OptimalLayout]
Value Name: EnableAutoLayout
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

I could swear there is a UI checkbox somewhere for this, but I can't find it...

maybe this setting is disabled at the same time as a screensaver? strangely I had this option disabled, which makes the HD activity suspicious. Especially since it isn't even fragmented at all(to the point of being worth it). But I'm fairly sure it isn't MALWARE (I just surgically removed several persistent items, and can't find a single foreign DLL with Process Explorer... I'll have to run filemon, figure out what it is. I hope it's something useful. Might not be defragmentation at all...

There is a checkbox for it in "TweakUI". It is titled "Optimize hard disk when idle" and is in the "General" section.

Solve : Lost downloads?

Answer»

I need a crapload of help. Everytime I try to download anything on my computer, it gets lost somewhere. I'm not even sure if it really downloads or not. I tried to download an anti-virus (McAfee--my subscription had expired a few months ago), but then THAT download got lost. Now I'm PISSED because (a) I can't download anything and (b) I just a bunch of MONEY to download software I can't access now. Any suggestions on what's going on? I would run a virus scan but I can't install one in the first place. Please help!Quote from: ljrosen on July 29, 2008, 12:00:18 AM

Welcome to the CH forums.

You're gonna have to tell US one heck of a lot more - what Operating System, which Browser, laptop/desktop/notebook, are you using a download manager.

What do you mean about the downloads getting 'lost', do you mean that you simply do not know where the download is on your hard drive? Have you run a Search for any downloaded file?

Forget McAfee, go with one of the FREE versions, AVG, Avast etc...Quote
Forget McAfee, go with one of the free versions, AVG, Avast etc...
Avira. I'm sure Broni would agree with me when I say AVG 8 isn't a good idea now.I've got Windows Vista on a Compaq Presario desktop and I use Internet Explorer. What happens is, whenever I try to download anything- software, a document, a game, whatever- the window pops up asking if I want to run it or save it, which is normal. Whichever I pick, it looks like it's downloading- the little bar tells me it's 100% downloaded, then nothing happens. It doesn't open the program, and it's not saved ANYWHERE- I've run a dozen searches everywhere on the hard drive, and it simply didn't go anywhere. I'm not entirely sure if it really downloads or not, or it would be somewhere on the computer, wouldn't it?

Also, at this point it doesn't matter if it's McAfee or Avira or AVG- I can't download any of them.

Does any of this help?Do you have a flash drive, or can you borrow one from someone?
To rule out a virus, the ultimate solution would be to scan, and you could download a free portable scanner such as ClamWin (link below), and put it on a flash drive, and put that flash drive in your computer, and run it from the flash drive.

This could also work with a burnable CD, by putting the software on the CD with a CD burner.

This version of ClamWin can run on a CD or Flashdrive without need to be installed (though, if you copy it to the computer, it will be much faster)
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable

Be sure to update it when you run it.
What options have you set in IE as to the location to save downloads ? ?
I'd check user name My Documents...

Solve : coffee on my laptop HELP!!!?

Answer»

spilt coffee on my laptop all over the keyboard and it crashed immediately. Now there's nothing. I can't start it up again. Is that it? Is there any way of rescuing it? It was a beautiful Vaio. I am so sad. Unplug the power and take out the battery!!!

Do not attempt to turn the computer on.

I you can, take out the Hard Drive, RAM, ect... DO IT.

Place the laptop on a clean and DRY surface and have a fan blow at it for as long as you can.

What is the exact laptop model?
Set up the laptop in a triangle shape (Open the lid partially, make it stand up on its own, so its an upside-down letter "V" shape)

Doing this, as well as KEEPING a fan BLOWING on it as Carbon Dudeoxide said, will allow the laptop to dry out as fast as it can.

its a sony vaio VGN-S1HP - have TAKEN out the battery - is that the hard drive under the flap on the BOTTOM? the screws are hellish stiff and i cant unscrew them.
Am giving my laptop a blowdry.
When it dries out will it start up again? At the moment its DEAD.
If it were my laptop, I would blow it until morning. *rest in peace, camera*

If the screws aren't + and - screws, then lets hope you didn't short-out your computer.
Otherwise, the Hard Drive should be salvageable if your computer is really dead.

The thing is I know that they work cause they charged once know its like that they dont want to charge? But there the right kind an I did use them so they work but I tried differnt bays but still nothing. Tried with AA an nothing, at a LOSS here.So they wont charge?YES when we got it we got it with the aa so when we went to get the aaa it wasnt to hard to FIND the ONES we needed. I dont think they REALLY would have charged if they wherent, but its my dad who got them so he knew what to get.Radio Shack tends to buy Chinese NiCad batteries in bulk with their name on them so quality suffers...
Stick with the Name Brands and you will save money in the long run...Anything I can try?

Solve : PM limit!!?

Hi peckerwood!!!

Long time no see!!!

Hi peckerwood!!!

Long time no see!!!

now lets wait for someone to actually tell me about the pm limit!!

Okay. Let's wait.... Sorry to shatter it, at first I thought it was from ivy. PeckerWood has more PMs than I do! I only have 5. If I didn't delete them all right away, I might have up to 6 or 7.... Dont feel bad I only have sixha! I win! I don't have any! ha ha. Well, for now, anyway.

EDIT: well then. GOOD thing for my last sentence above.Nathan is very generous. It's usually a 50 to 100 limit for normal members from what I've seen.

It's also normally proper "nettiquite" to empty out your PM's regularly. It takes up space and costs the owner money. If you have that many and they are IMPORTANT then why not exchange emails? Nathan could decide to do some house cleaning one day and poof they're gone with no warning. As far as I know there is no limit to how many PMs you can store. The only PM limits are:

10 Maximum number of recipients allowed in a personal message
1 Post count under which users must enter code when sending personal messages.
10 Number of personal messages a user may send in an hour.

So you shouldn't have to worry about them being deleted. HOWEVER, it's always a potential that the SMF crew (those who develop the forum system) could change or add a feature in future releases that would cause there to be a limit. Although they don't take up MUCH space as Evil Fantasy recommended if you don't plan on reading them again in the future I'd prefer that they be deleted. If you run Firefox (I don't know about IE), you can Right Click and Save Page As so you can save the page with all its formatting and PICTURES. This might help if you want to save messages.Ya in IE you go to file/page options, and press save as.

Solve : Ghost Email in Yahoo..?

Answer»

This is driving me NUTS!!! Four days ago, my Yahoo email inbox told me I had four messages. There were only three there. When I deleted the three after reading them, one still remained as UNOPENED. Every time I log in since then, it's still shows an unopened email though it is nowhere to be found. Any ideas?

Please feel free to contact me directly...I'd love to solve this..

Hello, I have removed your email address to prevent email harvesters from sending you SPAM.

Have you tried clearing out your Browser Cache?

In Internet Explorer:
Press the ALT key once to display the program menues (This only needs to be done in IE 7 and
CLICK Tools> Internet Options> and under "Browsing History" click "Delete", and click "Delete All".

In FireFox, click Tools> "Clear Private Data"

This might not be a problem with your computer, and it could be a problem with Yahoo. In that event, you will need to contact Yahoo Mail technical support. I get this once in a while with Yahoo mail and Hotmail both. I haven't seen it persist more than 24 hours though.

Are there any mails in the inbox now? If so, try marking all of the emails as unread, clear your cache, then mark them all as READ again.
