Just thought I'd take a moment to ask the users, moderators and admin of this board if there are any "pet peeves" you have about posting...not just on this board, but others as well.

One of mine is...you find a post with no replies...so you take the time to answer it...and the original poster never gets back to you and the thread ends up dead.

Another would be...to answer a post with no replies...and you start helping the person, by answering the post and then someone else jumps in and supplies the same information, or posts something that has absolutely nothing to do with the TOPIC, or takes over your thread before you get a chance to help the user. I guess we're all guilty of it.

Just wanted to hear your thoughts about this.It bugs me when someone gives ADVICE and then another person replies with something like "Yeah, do what [user] said" or something equally pointless like correcting spelling/grammar. Many of our users aren't from America and probably don't speak English as their first language, so just leave the poor guys alone.

On the other HAND, it also bugs me when people ask "What to do?" My math instructor (from Vietnam) does the same thing and I don't like it.

That is a major pet peeve for me and for most forum users, I'm sure. I've actually thought about posting an initial reply, when replying to a post with no replies and where the original post is a rather new member, which read would something like this:

[highlight]I can offer a suggestion to help resolve your problem but, first, I want to know if you will promise to respond, whether you find my suggestion helpful or not. It's very annoying to reply to someone's question and never get a response and this is something I see happen all too often in the forum. I play a lot of music. A LOT. At least 100 songs a day. My speakers recently started failing me, though. Whenever a bass or low note comes out, the sound is not clear. AT ALL. It makes me flinch every time... I just hate the NOISE it sounds like my PC is dying or it just can't get the noise out. I don't WANT to say crackling, but its something of the essence. Plz help, how do I fix it? Is there some setting I can chage?Chances are you've probably damaged your speakers from using them at loud volumes for a prolonged amount of time... it might be time to get some external speakers or headphones.

-JohnAny authorized repair center capable of repairing your laptop will be able to replace your internal laptop speakers. However, you'll be paying for both the parts and labor, as mentioned above it will likely be cheaper to PURCHASE external speakers or a headset. However, this isn't the most difficult repair and isn't the most expensive part. So really up to you.Well, I would really like to be as portable as possible. I will look into some new speaker installations, then, but I might have to go with the headsets.

Thanks all! Laptop speakers are notoriously poor quality. It's not surprising - by definition they have to be quite small, and small speakers are always going to struggle with (or be destroyed by) low frequencies. Replacing the speakers would probably just result in the same thing happening again a little way down the line. Plus finding speakers exactly the right size will either be tricky or expensive.

Nevertheless, it can be done. Just at a prohibitive cost and with short-term results (if you continue to make heavy DEMANDS on the replacement speakers). Better to get something fit for purpose.

wait, what exactly is this?

I have a friend who brings his laptop to school every few days. At school, he sets his laptop on Stand By and stuffs it in his bag. I keep telling him leaving it on Stand by all day, concealed in his bag is bad for the laptop and may DAMAGE it. Is that right?Is it going into standby or into hibernate? Either way I don't think it would be bad on the laptop, although I would suggest him going into hibernation as apposed to standby.

I've worked on and know several others who have worked on laptops and have simply closed the laptop screen to have it go into hibernation and have used the laptops for years with no abnormal affects. That may just be an isolated issue though.
And I have heard that hibernation can damage some files on your hard drive, although I'm not sure how much truth there is in that so don't take that as fact.Indeed, hibernation uses no power, i.e. no more power than when in full shutdown mode. If you care to test this, put your computer into Hibernation and then pull the plug. Plug it back in and turn it on; it will come out of Hibernation, same as if you had not pulled the plug.Some laptops have a standby feature that is more like the Suspend feature.
Everything is shut down, except for the fans and the RAM and CMOS.
Once it cools, the fans turn off
but the RAM and CMOS continue to recive power, for an almost instant recovery.

It is reccomended that you use Hibernate over Standby for two reasons:
Hibernate doesen ware your battery, and if its the old type of Standby, it will not overheat.

Hibernate takes all the contents of the RAM, and saves it to the disk. There are only two downsides:
You dont get an instant restart from your computer
You need a hard drive with as much free space as the amount of RAM you have.
(eg: You have 4GB ram in a laptop, you need at least 4GB free on your disk, but you probably have well over that if your laptop has 4GB of RAM in the FIRST place ) Unless the laptop is FAULTY be design (IE: loose parts) it shouldn't damage it. But leaving it running probably isn't a good thing considering the heat build-up and the HDD that be in use.

At the time I was trying to install Foxfire I was frustrated about the trash floder on my email. I am sure there is no Foxfire installation, just me.

I am in need of some direction. I have a bat file that queries and returns all disk space and software installed on SPECIFIC PC into a txt file. The problem is that when I run the bat against a network it puts all info into ONE txt file. I need the ability to create a DIFFERENT txt file for each PC with the naming convention like computerXXXX, computerXXX2 and so on. PLZ HELP.

What commands are you using in your batch file? Is the batch file calling for an external program (I dont remember batch being able to make text files)

You might also try using the Network Places icon on your desktop/start menu to view computers and their files by browsing your networkI USE pstools --> psinfo

X:\pstools\psinfo -s -d @X:\hostfile.txt -U username -p password > X:\results.txt

I need to create a "results.txt" file for each PC.

Of course, I don't know if it would be a good idea to have this type of feature viewable to all...guests included...

Yeah i agree Saviour, problem solved but what do you mean by 'if it were only viewable to registered users'. If what was only viewable to registered users?

if it were only viewable to registered users, this would cut down on some of the abuse (Since guests will not be able to see it)...also, if a registered user clicks it, his/her Username/IP address could be logged and the appropriate action taken if abused.

I think it's a good idea, it works well on other forums built on VBulletin.
It's just the question of whether it is possible on YaBB, and how to incorporate it if it is.
the idea of having people reach a certain rank before being allowed to report it is a good idea in theory, [highlight]but is still open to abuse, say by people spamming to get lots of posts and then using it.[/highlight]
Or, someone might see a post they wish to report and be unable to because they are new.

At the top of the forum pages is a Search button...

In the Search for: box, I entered the word computer.

In the By User: box, I entered Jp.

I checked all the boards including Subject and Message.

I can check for as little as a week ago, or for all posts.

I can also choose how many posts I want to view.

Then I click the Search button at the bottom...that's all there is to it.

Why do I not see that?
All I see is a little box which I can enter words to search for, no extra options like that.
Has this always been there?
And why can't I see it?

Why have I never noticed that before?

Cheers...Depends on what you mean by good. PERSONALLY if you're just looking to memorize questions and answers I guess it could be good. But the only person you'll be fooling is yourself. Simply memorizing questions and answer doesn't really TEACH you anything and when (or if) you get a job RELATED to what you use the braindumps for it's likely you'll have no clue of what's going on.

Most companies that require certification will ALSO likely quiz you on the job interview(s) so if you're looking for a good company I suggest actually learning the subject you're going to be testing on (books, classes, internet) and just ignore the braindumps.Thank you for your advise, good information.

It's actually the paper that makes the difference. If you want to print photos that resist water and smudges, try using HP's Advanced Photo Paper.

K got another question for you geniueses. My father has a BlackBerry Pearl 8100 and would like to put mp3's on his phone via the 2 gb mem stick that he bought for it. I plugged in the usb to phone and computer. Computer see the removable drive. Tryed the drag and drop method and I doesn't work. File wont even transfer to the BB. From what i hear it is an ongoing problem with BB pearl users. I would really like to be able to help him out cuz he does so much for me so if you have any answers for my question i would and always do greatly appriciate the help that is offered
Honestly don't have much experience with the BlackBerry but did some search on their site and found some potentially useful information.

Using BlackBerry Desktop Manager

Note: BlackBerry Desktop Manager 4.2 must be installed on the computer.

1. In BlackBerry Desktop Manager, open BlackBerry Media Manager.
2. Use BlackBerry Media Manager to transfer the audio or video file to the BlackBerry smartphone via a Universal Serial Bus (USB) connection.
3. Copy the FILES to the appropriate folder (either \blackberry\Music or \blackberry\Video) on the media card, or directly to the internal BlackBerry smartphone memory.

Note: Files larger than 3 MB cannot be transferred to internal BlackBerry smartphone memory.

Using the BlackBerry smartphone as a USB mass storage device

1. On the BlackBerry smartphone, go to Options > Advanced Options > Media Card.
2. Make sure that Mass Storage Mode Support is set to Enabled.
3. Connect the BlackBerry smartphone to the computer and follow the prompts on the BlackBerry smartphone.
4. Open the My Computer folder on the computer. The media card should appear there as a Removable Disk.
5. Copy the files to the appropriate folder (either \blackberry\Music or \blackberry\Video) on the media card.

1. Make sure that the media card reader is connected to the computer.
2. Insert a media card into the media card reader.
3. Open the My Computer folder on the computer. The media card should appear there as a Removable Disk.
4. Copy the files to the appropriate folder (either \blackberry\Music or \blackberry\Video) on the media card.
5. Insert the media card into the BlackBerry smartphone.
Thanks for the response computer admin. My father has the BB media manager and desktop tool. When you open the manager it doesn't pick up on the fact that there is a mem card in it. I just recognizes the internal mem. Hmm that's strange, if the card is not being seen by the program it's likely that is the cause of the issue. May want to see if there is an update to the media manager tool and see if the BB is even reading the card, maybe it's bad.

Otherwise the only other SUGGESTION would be to try the flash card in a media reader.Thanx again. But to my EMBARRASSMENT I found the problem all I had to to was format the mem through the BB

So if you are having PROBLEMS trying to access memory stick with your BB 8100 then you can try formating the stick with the black Berry

I **assumed** because it was working on the admin account, just appeared differently that it was working, I was definitely wrong. During the conversion it unchecked the "count post" option on any previous board that existed and most of my testing was DONE in a board that I created after the conversion that did not have the issue.

A few months ago, a tenant in her rental property gave her a newer eMachines, one with Win XP Home and a 1.2 or 1.3 GHz CPU. At first, my mother was going to give this one to a church but I explained to her that it was a substantially better computer than her 466id. So, she DECIDED to keep the newer one.

So, I now have the 466id. A local supermarket has a bulletin board on which anyone can post For Sale signs. I posted a sign for the 466id and haven't recieved a single call on it. If it's appears to be worthless on the MARKET, I haven't decided what I'll do with it; I'll probably either keep it AROUND for awhile or take it to local computer recylcing drive in May or a later collection drive in the fall.

I believe the 466id had only 4MB shared video memory. I had an old PCI video card with 8MB that I installed in it. It originally had 64MB of RAM; was later increased to 128MB. I have the original Win98SE restore CD.my desktop is a 566i2... it didn't have the "never obsolete" sticker on it though... my parents bought it in July of 2000 (it had WinME on it). It originally only had 32MB RAM but when we bought it we got a free upgrade to 64MB :O
Then in '04 when they bought a T2824 (2.53GHz) i inherited it. Note that it's the faster of my two computers !
I put Windows 2000 Professional on it and upgraded the RAM to the maximum of 256MB.

as a note, my first computer was a 50mhz Pentium, 16mbs of SIMM memory, w95, 512k onboard dedicated graphics memory, 1gb hard drive. was an old office pc at one time.. it had doom I and doom II on it when i got it, ran fine. i pwnt doom I and doom II in a matter of months on every difficulty on that machine. then it strangely stopped working.. just all the sudden, i try to turn it on to beat doom yet another time, and, presto.. its dead..

Was just wondering if there's something similar to this but is free. Or EVEN if there's somewhere that lets me MAKE an account, and upload FILES that can only be accessed by my account. So nothing like Putfile. The iDisk facility. In the .mac thing i have my account and like 1GB of SPACE and can upload THINGS to my iDisk , and then when i log in i can navigate to the file and download it.

Can someone help me? I'm not computer savvy and have a problem. I am trying to login to a member login page on a website which I am a member of. I have, in the past, accessed this page via the usual login and not had a problem. I can still access it from my work computer but for some reason not a home anymore. When I type in my login info and enter, the page just seems to stall out. The progress ICON at the bottom of page register 2 or 3 bars and then "times out". Any ideas would be appreciated. I just did a QUICK search of net to find someone who might be able to help and stumbled across this site.

Hi, I'm brand new to the forum. I have a canon s530d printer. I bought a new printhead,but it did not solve the problem. I have tried four different cartridges(I have been refilling this printer for several years with no problem). Is it possible that the contacts going to the printer need to be cleaned? Or is possible that the memory in the printer is faulty? I also installed the latest driver from Canon. unlovedwarriorHi Unloved warrior, The printer is about 4 years old, the cartridges(4) have been REFILLED a number of times and they are not new. The printhead is new.....I got two other responses,one from Canon to go thru the usual printhead alignment and cleaning(been there done that) the other from inkaccessories and they had another idea, they said to remove the CAP from the purge unit and soak in warm water for 10 minutes. I will try that and let you(everybody) know if it works. Thanks for the interest. There is a possibility that all the cartridges are no good, but I doubt it because the other colors and the black are of the same vintage and they work well.......Do you think there is a possibility that the printer chip or electronics is faulty? Canon's cartridges are simply ink resevoirs, not like some other where the printhead is on the CARTRIDGE......Anyhow, I'll keep you posted, Cheers, Baruskait might be just that one is broke but try soaking it and SEEING what that does for you
