Solve : Computer help forums...Pet peeves? |
|
Answer» Just thought I'd take a moment to ask the users, moderators and admin of this board if there are any "pet peeves" you have about posting...not just on this board, but others as well. Many of our users aren't from AmericaThat's quite true. I'm not. sadly im from america and my english skills are pretty weak but oh wellQuote One of mine is...you find a post with no replies...so you take the time to answer it...and the original poster never gets back to you and the thread ends up dead. That is a major pet peeve for me and for most forum users, I'm sure. I've actually thought about posting an initial reply, when replying to a post with no replies and where the original post is a rather new member, which read would something like this: I can offer a suggestion to help resolve your problem but, first, I want to know if you will promise to respond, whether you find my suggestion helpful or not. It's very annoying to reply to someone's question and never get a response and this is something I see happen all too often in the forum. So, I'm going to wait until you reply to this before posting an actual suggestion to resolve your problem. Quote QuoteOne of mine is...you find a post with no replies...so you take the time to answer it...and the original poster never gets back to you and the thread ends up dead. That is a major pet peeve for me and for most forum users, I'm sure. I've actually thought about posting an initial reply, when replying to a post with no replies and where the original post is a rather new member, which read would something like this: thats not a bad idea Quote QuoteMe either. Many of our users aren't from AmericaThat's quite true. I'm not. Nice idea soybean, but the downside is that it would put some people off and make it a little more complicated. Maybe the positives outweigh the negatives though, it's certainly something to think about. Quote Nothing is worse, however, than impatient unappreciative people who get upset with the helpful members of our forum who are taking time out of their lives to provide a FREE service. This is something I totally agree with. Matter of fact, I was on the chat and I was helping someone, when I had to go. I apologised profusely and said I was very sorry etc, and I checked the log later on. They finished with a lot of irate messages and saying that this was very disappointing. To that person, and others like them: this is free. I do not get paid for this. I reserve the right to leave (directing you to other sources of information) if I cannot think of an answer or if I am unfortunately called away by something more urgent. I do have a life outside this forum and sometimes other matters intervene. Don't pick FAULT with me, I am giving up my time to help you out. Take it or leave it, it doesn't matter to me. It's your problem, not mine, and I don't see you giving up your time to help me. Fair point? I know it seems a little harsh and I'm not playing the martyr or anything, it just annoys me when people complain when I'm doing for free what their local computer shop would charge them for. Get what I'm saying?Amen...Calum. Well said. Update... By the way...for those of you interested...and for those who do have a problem getting their point ACROSS due to language barriers...there are other alternatives... A free website translator posted somewhere on this site couldn't "hoit" (hurt). Just a thought...it would make it easier for those having a problem understanding American or the Queen's english. Could be a futile attempt at communication, but hey, ya never know. Wether or not the current content would be translated correctly is something else to look into, but just the thought of having it available may be useful. Again...something to consider.... |

Solve : I really put in my 500% around here? |
|
Answer» See how hardworking I am? I put in my 520.9%! Hehe nice work [Applaud], maybe with the new FAQ changes more people will contribute. I still need to go over the FAQ's sometime and change the no-longer-existent TAGS to a SMF equivalent, like [ glow=red,2,300 ][ /glow ], so they look less ugly. Dilbert, I don't get it. Where did you get those numbers?Click 'profile' at the top of the page. Then scroll down to the bottom and under where it says 'additional options' click 'Show general statistics for this member.' Then you can see a whole load of information about your/other accounts. It is a very USEFUL feature in these new forums. OK, I see where the numbers come from now, but it doesn't make sense. How are the numbers calculated? How can anyone have 100% in a particular forum? To me, that would mean they are the only person participating in that forum. It would. Those numbers are calculated like this: In any given forum, what percent of those posts are yours? In the two top one's cases, I am at 100% because all of the posts there are MINE. (The Programming and Web Design things, which are at 100%, are not the ones on the main board. They are in the FAQ Wiki.)QUOTE from: Dilbert on March 30, 2007, 09:52:25 AM It would. And, most or all of the OTHERS, too. Now it makes sense.Right. I only hold about 1% of the posts in the main board equivalents (a feat in itself!). |

Solve : Question about a laptop in bag? |
|
Answer» I have a friend who brings his laptop to school every few days. At school, he sets his laptop on Stand By and stuffs it in his bag. I keep telling him leaving it on Stand by all day, concealed in his bag is bad for the laptop and may DAMAGE it. Is that right? Is it going into standby or into hibernate? Either way I don't think it would be bad on the laptop, although I would suggest him going into hibernation as apposed to standby. |

Solve : unwanted pictures? |
|
Answer» When I look in Display properties of the control panel, I find all sorts of pictures which I do not want in the "Wallpaper", How can I remove the ones I don't want? What VERSION of Windows ? ? I have a gut instinct these aren't your standard images... Quote The wallpapers that come with Windows XP are in C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper.I believe this is correct. It's consistent with my system. And, I found it stated in another forum @ http://www.winmatrix.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=5604I looked in windows/web and the only ones in there are original windows XP pictures.......................The ones that I am talking about, are in my personal photograph files which are in My documents, these for some unknown reason have shown up in the wallpaper section of the display properties. Back them up & delete them or rename them or relocate them. When you check in properties they should be gone then you can put them back how they were.Quote I have a gut instinct these aren't your standard images... as do i >.>I removed them to a disc from My documents, and they have gone from the display properties...........Now, how can I stop them transferring to the wall papers when I down load from my CAMERA. I guess the real question is............."How do I stop pictures being transferred into the display properties when downloading from my camera", instead of just going into my documents / my pictures. I am using Kodak easyshare.hahaha change the directory to where they are saved by your software. lol |

Solve : Notify option.? |
|
Answer» Lately, I've been noticing a lot of SPAM showing up on the board. Is there any way we could implement some kind of Notify/Report option that will let the admin/mods know about this stuff? Or should we just stick to PM's, for fear of the option being abused?CBMatt, But sometimes that button can be misused as someone might randomly keep reporting posts. The Admin or Moderator would have a long, useless list of posts... True...however, if it were only viewable to REGISTERED users, this would cut down on some of the abuse (Since guests will not be able to see it)...also, if a registered user clicks it, his/her Username/IP address could be logged and the appropriate action taken if abused. Yeah i agree Saviour, problem solved but what do you mean by 'if it were only viewable to registered users'. If what was only viewable to registered users?Quote Yeah i agree Saviour, problem solved but what do you mean by 'if it were only viewable to registered users'. If what was only viewable to registered users? Sorry... I was referring to the link or button that could be used to report a spam post...I agree, it should only be viewable to registered users. Furthermore, I think you should have to reach a certain title (Beginner, Hopeful, Expert, etc.) to be able to use it. It would help assure that someone is a more trusted user. And IP logging is a great idea, by the way. Perhaps a brief pop-up disclaimer could be incorporated somehow, if even possible on a YaBB.I think it's a good idea, it WORKS well on other forums built on VBulletin. It's just the question of whether it is possible on YaBB, and how to incorporate it if it is. the idea of having people reach a certain rank before being allowed to report it is a good idea in theory, but is still open to abuse, say by people spamming to get lots of posts and then using it. Or, someone might see a post they wish to report and be unable to because they are new. Quote if it were only viewable to registered users, this would cut down on some of the abuse (Since guests will not be able to see it)...also, if a registered user clicks it, his/her Username/IP address could be logged and the appropriate action taken if abused. This is a good idea, as is the pop-up disclaimer. Overall, I think that PM'ing a Moderator/the Admin does work, but it only goes to one person, unless you send it to all of them, but either way it could annoy them with lots of PMs suddenly arriving about the same post. Reporting the post with a button would be useful, but could lead to abuse and may not be possible.Actually it seems just the regulars have been good at handling it...we usually just shame them into never coming back with our advanced wit... Quote I think it's a good idea, it works well on other forums built on VBulletin.Yeah, but then we'd report that person with our handy new Notify feature and they'd get banned. Ha.Quote Actually it seems just the regulars have been good at handling it...we usually just shame them into never coming back with our advanced wit...Yeah, I guess . . . anyone seen Newbie01 lately? But this would provide a quicker way to remove posts that are directly threatening, abusive etc. Quote Yeah, but then we'd report that person with our handy new Notify feature and they'd get banned. Ha.Good point. LOL.Quote Lately, I've been noticing a lot of spam showing up on the board. Is there any way we could implement some kind of Notify/Report option that will let the admin/mods know about this stuff? Or should we just stick to PM's, for fear of the option being abused?I don't mind PM's about this type of abuse and if it is SPAM I'll ban the user, IP, and delete the post. The forums policy does not allow for SPAM or any type of advertising. Forums are meant for help and computer related discussions. I also try to watch the forums trash bin from MESSAGES the mods delete and handle SPAM sent there as well but sure I miss a lot there. Apart from sending a PM message the YaBB boards do not have any additional features about reporting SPAM that I'm aware of. |

Answer» Circuit City: You're fired, but reapply for less pay Electronics giant targets 3,400 higher-paid employees in layoffs Associated Press NEW YORK -- Circuit City ANNOUNCED layoffs aimed squarely at better-paid workers, implying that wages are as subject to discounts as flat-screen TVs. The electronics retailer said Wednesday it will lay off about 3,400 store workers immediately and replace them with lower-paid new hires as soon as possible. The laid-off workers, about 8 percent of the company's total work force, will get a severance package and a chance to reapply for their former jobs, at lower pay, after a 10-week delay, the company said. Analysts and economists said the MOVE is an UNCERTAIN experiment that could backfire for the chain. The risks: Morale could sink and CUSTOMERS could avoid the stores. Also, knowledgeable customer service is one of the few ways Circuit City can tackle competitors that include Wal-Mart, they say. "This strategy strikes me as being quite cold," said Bernard Baumohl, executive director of The Economic Outlook Group. "I don't think it's in the best interest of Circuit City as a whole." While other companies, such as Caterpillar, have introduced two-tiered wage systems, where newer workers make less, firing workers and offering to rehire them at a lower wage is rare. Circuit City, the nation's No. 2 consumer electronics retailer behind Best Buy, SAYS the workers being laid off were earning "well above the market-based salary range for their role." ** And you wonder what fuels the Illegal immigrant issue? ** http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20070329/BUSINESS/703290413/1003/BUSINESSI used to work for CC as a bench tech. If they are, is there any kind of a "fixative" to protect the photo? Thanks for the help. All HP printer inks are water soluable. All HP printer inks are water soluable. Not so. HP's Vivera inks are pigment based, moisture-safe when fully dry and fade resistant. Not true, as well... Read further...they use dyes...not pigments...anyway pigments are just a synonym for colors. http://h71036.www7.hp.com/hho/cache/328624-0-0-225-121.html "HP uses dyes for color vibrancy because they dissolve completely in water, unlike pigments." http://h71036.www7.hp.com/hho/cache/331414-0-0-225-121.html "The use of dyes, RATHER than pigments, also enables HP Vivera Inks to provide an exceptionally smooth, uniformly high-gloss finish on glossy photo papers." Solve : Xerox inkless printer? |
|
Answer» PRETTY amazing and good article about it (pretty long READ though). Xerox is developing a new printing technology which does not require ink of any kind. The new technology includes reusable paper which can be printed and erased dozens of times and has the potential to revolutionize printing. Although the technology is still in the early stages of development, it has the potential to CUT printing COSTS and reduce office paper usage dramatically. New details on this upcoming technology are revealed here for the first time. http://www.tfot.info/content/view/115/That's big news. Nice FIND. |

Solve : Old Mouse? |
|
Answer» Hey everyone, i've got an old Logitech Optical mouse with a broken right-click button so i replaced it with another mouse for my computer. I like making bracelets with the parts. That's kinda camp. Lol, how do you make bracelets with the parts?Fill it with catnip and leave it out for the cat...Well, if the optical LIGHT still works, and you get another mouse with an optical light that goes out, you have a replacement. (Or you could just make a cool red light using the optical light and battery) Or mutalate it.... mutalating is always funI always liked this idea after seeing it on a TV SHOW, how about making a computer mouse robot. http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/01/how_to_make_a_robot_from_an_ol.html Update the link appears broken and/or hidden in a pay only site. However, did find the PDF file through the G4TV zip file, which can be found through this zip file: http://downloads.oreilly.com/make/g4pdf.ziphmm...i think i'll just make a simple red (useless) light I could keep the USB cable for SOMETHING else....dunno......Rob, I'm just happy to have something to entertain me for a couple of hours when the power goes out. Heh. Quote Lol, how do you make bracelets with the parts?I get this thin plastic sheeting (real cheap stuff; can't remember exactly what it's called) and cut it to whatever measurements I want. Then I just figure out how I want everything to be displayed and I glue it in place. You, of course, have to make sure the plastic will bend once the parts are on it. To close it, you can melt the ends together (for a slip-on) or try to cut a makeshift clasp into it, which is a bit more difficult. I WISH I had some pictures 'cause it's actually pretty neat. I got the idea from all of the wacky fashions in Fruits. If you use the PS/2 or USB cable, you can also make a necklace!I tried making this really weird thing with the mouse...I was cutting sharp bits off the top of the soldered places and then i accidentally short circuited it. Solve : British Airways "a different mile high-club? |
|
Answer» Updated: 2:52 a.m. ET March 19, 2007 LONDON - A passenger in first class woke up to a shock when he found himself sitting NEAR a CORPSE on a British Airways flight, British newspapers reported on Monday. Paul Trinder, 54, said cabin crew moved the body of the elderly woman from the economy section where she had died after take-off, the MIRROR and Sun tabloids said. "The corpse was strapped into the seat but because of turbulence it kept slipping down on to the floor," Trinder, a businessman, was quoted as saying. "It was horrific. The body had to be wedged in place with lots of pillows." The woman's daughter was also upgraded and spent the rest of the nine-hour flight from Delhi to London grieving next to her dead mother, the Sun reported. The Guardian newspaper said the incident happened last week. British Airways has apologized for any distress suffered, according to the reports. The Mirror quoted BA as saying: "We apologize, but our crew were working in difficult circumstances and chose the option they thought would cause least disruption." ** I wonder what he had for lunch ! ** http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17683917/Sheesh, a nine-hour flight with your dead mother has got to be stressful. That's . . . disgusting. We don't have that annoying "Enter the extremely hard to read code in the box" thing. maybe we shouldIt does GET very annoying though.but it will stop the bots for nowTrue, but it can be a deterrent for humans, too. Who'd register after being rebuffed three times for not having good enough deductive skills to know that a certain squiggle is a c rather than an o? Though there was a forum I was one once, can't remember the name, that allowed the PC to read the code aloud. Which was cool.SMF has this capability it's in use on their forums. Solve : A computer that never becomes obsolete? |

Answer» I've been LOOKING for one of these for a long time. Apparently this E-machine will never become obsolete. I put Windows 2000 Professional on it and upgraded the RAM to the maximum of 256MB. This is probably a fine running machine i would guess...Quote QuoteI put Windows 2000 Professional on it and upgraded the RAM to the maximum of 256MB. rofl.. here is something to confuse everyone: specs of it are.. 700mhz celeron, HP CUW-AM motherboard, 256mbs of PC100 memory (even the old crappy HP motherboard supports more RAM than the stock Emachine board that blew up.. i believe the emachines max ram was 512, the HP's is a gig i believe), 8gb seagate primary hdd, 19gb ibm secondary, 48x cd rom drive, promise PCI to ultra 100 adaptor (four drive, for testing externally, just run the cables out the back ), 350w rexus PSU, linksys 100mbs eithernet card, runnin w2k pro (so i can interface with either ntfs or fat partitions without running the bloatware that is XP on it)Haha, Dead_Reckon, so you finally decided to bring out your "pMachine", eh? We ended up installing Windows XP one one of those (same as the Admin posted) eMachines, and BOY WAS IT SLOW! I cant belive Windows didnt deny the instalation. (But it did work, just a bit of startup time)Quote QuoteYeah, it is, despite being 7 years old. My laptop, on the other hand, which is the same age, and has XP on it (big mistake, i'm switching to 2K on the next reformat) is so slooooooow.I put Windows 2000 Professional on it and upgraded the RAM to the maximum of 256MB. Answer» Surely the speed of lightning is directly proportional to the speed of light..? Surely the speed of lightning is directly proportional to the speed of light..? I tried to resist .... I did... I really did. >g< You want fast? Download Windows 3.11 onto the computer you are using right now, and it'll give you fast I REMEMBER our second computer 4Mhz 2MB RAM 80MB HDD and running Windows 3.1 (that OS that never crashed... really) Quote I guess the speed of light isn't constant, after all. it cant be. how can a industrial cleaner that works "lightning fast" be equally fast as a computer that is rated to be "lightning fast"? can you EVEN put them on the same scale of speed? can anyone even define the actual speed of "lighting fast"? as a note, my first computer was a 50mhz Pentium, 16mbs of SIMM memory, w95, 512k onboard dedicated graphics memory, 1gb hard drive. was an old office pc at one time.. it had doom I and doom II on it when i got it, ran fine. i pwnt doom I and doom II in a matter of months on every difficulty on that MACHINE. then it strangely stopped working.. just all the sudden, i try to turn it on to beat doom yet another time, and, presto.. its dead..Oh. My. Goodness. Quote QuoteI guess the speed of light isn't constant, after all. Sure. It is anything that is faster than the speed of dark. Quote as a note, my first computer was a 50mhz Pentium, 16mbs of SIMM memory, w95, 512k onboard dedicated graphics memory, 1gb hard drive. was an old office pc at one time.. it had doom I and doom II on it when i got it, ran fine. i pwnt doom I and doom II in a matter of months on every difficulty on that machine. then it strangely stopped working.. just all the sudden, i try to turn it on to beat doom yet another time, and, presto.. its dead.. So it didn't die a slow, prolonged death, eh? It died ... ... ... (wait for it) ... ... lightning fast !! OOOH I WANT 15MB Seriously, though, wow... it's amazing how far technology has come since then... -JohnQuote QuoteQuoteI guess the speed of light isn't constant, after all. define the speed of dark, and we might be a bit closer to the long asked question.. "How fast is lightning fast?" To the person referring the speed of lightning to the speed of light. Lightning travels at a speed of 93,000 miles per second wheres light if i'm not mistaken travels at the speed of 149,668,992 miles per second. lol speed of light is faster by just a wee bit. I think, someone check me on that.Quote To the person referring the speed of lightning to the speed of light.Lightning is really the speed electricity can travel. Light well you figure it out lolQuote
Oh my... I must be running low on creative juice today - I'm not coming up with anything appropriate at the moment. Let me call a time out, and I'll get back to you when the feeling COMES upon me. Yes, it is the speed of energy. When the energy is conducted (word) the energy travels up. The light from it travels down (or appears to) Still, its fast. And they are trying to replace computer electrical conduction (word) wires with FiberOptic (oouy), which would make computers faster. |

Answer» look at this config ok so should i get a new comp....Or just not try to run XP on this one...That depends on what you do with your PC. If you're just doing work, your PC is fine for your needs. If you are playing games (like me), then you'll probably want to upgrade your RAM a little. EDIT: I just realized that my school has SIMILAR computers, but they run Windows 2000. YEAH, XP might be too MUCH for this PC.Either Win2K or a RAM upgrade would help that PC out a lot. I don't see it playing games either way, but it is a decent PC.I tell you, I have seen Windows XP on worse computers My old school used to put XP on Windows 98 computers and my current school, our EMACHINES are loaded with 128-256MB RAM and a 800MHz processor (Ever notice how almost all PostMaster emails saying your email was delayed always turn up as not sent at all?) |

Kinda funny read and I understand the guy being pissed, but he's gonna lose. Little too much legal/technical at the end though..... nice post* It's a great alternative in many ways...but with Windows coming pre-installed on +90% of new machines and the firm entrenchment in the business world don't hold your breath EXPECTING to see anything change anytime soon...In my opinion, you know full well that when you buy the machine you are getting Windows on it. There are PLENTY of alternative retailers who will quite happily supply a machine with Linux (or any OS of your choice) on it. And if I remember correctly, the reason why these machines cost more is because they: - Do not have the bundled c*** (e.g. AOL, Norton) that brings down the machine cost. - Are produced in smaller quantities. Please, you are getting the machine cheaper than a "naked" pc. Quit moaning and just format the hard drive.Dilbert I shared your link with another site and gave you and CH credit for the find.
