Solve : Fraudulent website account? |
|
Answer» I posted this initially in the wrong forum, but here goes again. Is it possible for a website profile/account to migrate from one website to a new or different website ? Reason I ask is that I just deleted an account on an internet dating website that I'm almost positive I never created. Problem is that my girlfriend thinks I was active on this site and I wasn't. There's a slim, very slim possibility that I created the account/profile but I sure don't remember doing so. This website is not my "speed" and I wouldn't have been attracted to it to begin with. Nevertheless, I did try internet dating several years ago and haven't been active in well over three years so yes, accounts were created that's all in the past, pre-girlfriend. She doesn't think so, but that's a different issue. I do remember continuing to receive "phishing" emails to my old screen names for about a year or so after ending my foray into internet dating, but they for the most part have all disappeared except for the one in question and one more that's recently started to show up again (yahoo). Is there a logical explanation for getting messages from a site I never belonged too ? Also, do internet dating sites commonly maintain deleted profiles or account info, and if so, is that legal to do ? Welcome to CH. There's a slim, very slim possibility that I created the account/profile but I sure don't remember doing so. If you were able to delete the account, you were probably the one who created it. Maybe you were drunk when you created it and just don't remember Thanks for the replies and possibilities. I still don't think I created the account/profile mainly because it wasn't the KIND of website I would even look at let ALONE create an account in. I was able to delete the account because when you followed the link back from the phishing email, the account was already logged in. I didn't have to use an account name or password to gain access to the account since the account was already open. Since the account was already open and I saw the "account" tab, I clicked on it and that took me to a page that allowed me to delete the account. I KNOW I've not used the website and I've never been billed by the website, I check my credit card statements every month, so the whole thing is bizarre from my perspective. Hopefully, my deleting the account will stop the phishing emails but I'm mildly skeptical. I'm a little concerned about the possibility of identity theft. Hopefully, this is just a case of a website creating an account/profile from my earlier internet dating forays. But the part I don't understand is how did they get my email unless it was maybe a website that was renamed/changed/recreated and the "new" website is initially populated with old/previous accounts/profiles Someone got your email. Someone set up a fake account. Someone sent you a BOGUS email, you followed the link. Someone was phishing. Don't click on spam links in spam emails and never enter any personal information on a website like that. Edit: P.S. That's my theory. I could be totally wrong. You did the right thing. And now may be a good time to review you Credit cards. You may want to close some and start new ones. Or ask for a new number. Here is an I dean I got from my daughter. You can buy a debit card that is as good as a credit card for most on-line transactions. Use it to limit the damage that a fraudulent site could do. And never, never give out back account information unless it is a special account you have set up the will not allow overdraft and never has more that $200 or whatever you would spend at one time. It happens.Quote from: evilfantasy on October 10, 2009, 08:46:48 PM

Answer» I keep all my shortcuts in the quicklaunch. I have 30 of the most used apps down there for easy access and that's easier than a shortcut on the desktop since it's only one click to open. What is that smegging commercialistic media minded consumeristic frog doing on your background? How dare you .......thats my mother-in-laws photo ....and she is good to me.........she never comes round Captured on the move......slippery job. I'm more concerned with how many files you actually have open! Even when I'm really trying to look productive I have maybe .25 that amount open. Kudos to you. You're not the first to say that. Solve : Researchers Explore Scrapping Internet |
|
Answer» NEW YORK (AP) - Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's BLESSING want to scrap all that and start over. The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate" approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969. The Internet "works well in many situations but was designed for completely different assumptions," said Dipankar Raychaudhuri, a Rutgers University professor overseeing three clean-slate projects. "It's sort of a miracle that it continues to work well today." No longer constrained by slow connections and computer processors and high costs for storage, researchers say the time has come to rethink the Internet's underlying architecture, a move that could mean replacing networking equipment and rewriting software on computers to better channel future traffic over the existing pipes. Even Vinton Cerf, one of the Internet's founding fathers as co- developer of the key communications techniques, said the exercise was "generally healthy" because the current technology "does not satisfy all needs." One challenge in any reconstruction, though, will be balancing the interests of various constituencies. The first time around, researchers were able to toil away in their labs quietly. Industry is playing a bigger role this time, and law enforcement is bound to make its needs for wiretapping known. There's no evidence they are meddling yet, but once any research looks promising, "a number of people (will) want to be in the drawing room," said Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor affiliated with Oxford and Harvard universities. "They'll be wearing coats and ties and spilling out of the venue." The National SCIENCE Foundation wants to build an experimental research network known as the Global Environment for Network Innovations, or GENI, and is funding several projects at universities and elsewhere through Future Internet Network Design, or FIND. Rutgers, Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are among the universities pursuing individual projects. Other government AGENCIES, including the Defense Department, have also been exploring the concept. The European Union has also backed research on such initiatives, through a program known as Future Internet Research and Experimentation, or FIRE. Government officials and researchers met last month in Zurich to discuss early findings and goals. A new network could run parallel with the current Internet and eventually replace it, or perhaps aspects of the research could go into a major overhaul of the existing architecture. These clean-slate efforts are still in their early stages, though, and aren't expected to bear fruit for another 10 or 15 years—assuming Congress comes through with funding. Guru Parulkar, who will become executive director of Stanford's initiative after heading NSF's clean-slate programs, estimated that GENI alone could cost $350 million, while government, university and industry spending on the individual projects could collectively reach $300 million. Spending so far has been in the tens of millions of dollars. And it could take billions of dollars to replace all the software and hardware deep in the legacy systems. Clean-slate advocates say the cozy world of researchers in the 1970s and 1980s doesn't necessarily mesh with the realities and needs of the commercial Internet. "The network is now mission critical for too many people, when in the (early days) it was just experimental," Zittrain said. The Internet's early architects built the system on the principle of trust. Researchers largely knew one another, so they kept the shared network open and flexible—qualities that proved key to its rapid growth. But spammers and hackers arrived as the network expanded and could roam freely because the Internet doesn't have built-in mechanisms for KNOWING with certainty who sent what. The network's designers also assumed that computers are in fixed locations and always connected. That's no longer the case with the proliferation of laptops, personal digital assistants and other mobile devices, all hopping from one wireless access point to another, losing their signals here and there. Engineers tacked on improvements to support mobility and improved security, but researchers say all that adds complexity, reduces performance and, in the case of security, amounts at most to bandages in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse. Workarounds for mobile devices "can work quite well if a small fraction of the traffic is of that type," but could overwhelm computer processors and create security holes when 90 percent or more of the traffic is mobile, said Nick McKeown, co-director of Stanford's clean- slate program. The Internet will continue to face new challenges as applications require guaranteed transmissions—not the "best effort" approach that works better for e-mail and other tasks with less time sensitivity. Think of a doctor using teleconferencing to perform a surgery remotely, or a customer of an Internet-based phone service needing to make an emergency call. In such cases, even small delays in relaying data can be deadly. And one day, SENSORS of all sorts will likely be Internet capable. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D8OFTIU00&show_article=1 |

Solve : Your Network? |
|
Answer» On another computer FORUM they have a thread like this and it's interesting to see what people's setups are. Just post a diagram or something of your home network. <snip> I have thought about that. However, I don't have the money to buy a low end machine from someone and my mom/dad isn't going to cough it up when we don't "need" one. Is it POSSIBLE to have a print/file server running as one? I'm assuming it is. But I just want to make sure.I'm talking about a dedicated device, not a computer used as a server. For example, see Print servers from newegg.com. I don't know the answer to your QUESTION about a print/file server running as one. Quote from: SilentAssasin64 on March 31, 2007, 03:05:50 PM Is it possible to have a print/file server running as one? I'm assuming it is. But I just want to make sure. Yes.Thought so. Solve : Unfamiliar icon in toolbar? |

Answer» Windows XP just have to find the file that is not deleted and well delete itNot that easy for me..... I ran a full system scan a few days ago and my antivirus found a 'hacktool' and couldn't delete it and i couldn't find it so i ran a screen capture program to capture my antivirus scan while in progress so i can find the path of the hacktool and delete it manually. I was watching my full system scan after it was FINISHED and i found out where it was. It turns out my brother downloaded it to try and find out my msn password.... (he failed)lol I feel completely lost. Dunno how to do a screen capture, or how that could help me at all, and don't know how to determine what file to delete since I don't know what it is or what the "good" files are that I should have. Answer» Yes, it works again.I may have lost it - email notifications of new posts in subscribed threads - again. Here Ya Go... Thanks. Not sure what 'normal' is, for elapsed TIME for the emailed notification to show up in the inbox. I'll give it at LEAST 5 minutes. That should be enough time. If no show, I'll have to try changing my account's email address, and changing it back. Patio - are you still HANGING around? Can you, or anybody else READING, reply to this? Let's see if any improvement. I changed my email in my profile, and sent myself a PM. Never got it. That's different from the last time... PM notifications never failed before, it was only new post notifications. Sent myself another. Never got it either. So, changed my email back to the original, and PM'd myself. Haven't gotten that one either. Now with a reply from you or anyone, let's see if I get a notification of new post. I have a bad feeling about it. Testing.....1.....2........Quote Testing.....1.....2........ Got it! And the first two PMs finally SHOWED up too... at the same time as the notification for this last reply from you. Something must have been holding them back, and they all went out at once. In the past, they arrived within a minute, just like this notification about your last post. Thanks! Here's another. And another.... |

Answer» The chassis fan on my comp wasnt workin RIGHT but the other TWO(processor and power supply) were working just fine. I opened the side panel to the comp and after shutting down the computer, I used a VACUUM and removed the dust and other dirt build-up from the board. I then attempted to re-boot the comp and i GOT nothing. I checked the power cord, power supply, and the other connections removed the memory and all and still nothing. Any ideas? thanks.Did you perhaps press the vaccume directly against the computer parts you were cleaning, or get it too close? may the computer rest in piece Peace. patio i can spell im HALF tarded in my own languageAnd you're the only one i pick on for it... lol and y?? i get my point across most of the timeQuote may the computer rest in piece PiecesPeace on it. chuckie6104 Since the problem now resides (most likely) in a damaged chip, I can only say this: Next time, try using a can of air. Answer» After an almost 2 year hiatus Black VIPER is back up and running Here... Has your spelling improved ? Just "WOW" I have read info like his elsewhere and have wasted tons of paper printing out tweaks etc... his are much easier and to the point. Awesome info to have before my clean install, THANKS Patio*HIP! HIP! Hooray! For he's a JOLLY good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow, for he's a jolly good fellow . . . and so say all of us. I'm going to keep watching his site, I used his services guide a while back before he disappeared to tune my old PC and I spent ages trying to find it for this one. I eventually found MG's copy and used that, recommending it to a FRIEND also. Good to see he's back, looking forward to more great tips and tweaks. |

Solve : please tell me how to permanently move display screen to left of monitor frame?? |
|
Answer» Hi everyone: Does your monitor have buttons on front to control various settings? If so, take a look through the menus on it; most monitors allow shifting the screen right, left, up, or down.Well, Ann, I get the impression you haven't tried using those buttons on your monitor because you're afraid you'll make it worse. Am I right? I really can't tell you how the controls on your monitor work, since there are many brands and models of monitors and so there are many variations in the designs and the how the control buttons and onscreen menus work. I have two Samsung 17 inch monitors, two different models; even they are quite different in this respect. I think you really need to just experiment with them. However, there may be another issue here. I can't tell for sure but your comments about what you observed with your computer after getting it back from some repair service make me wonder whether the repair person installed the correct video drivers. I'm inclined to think you should call that repair shop and tell them your computer display is distorted, not aligned right, etc., and tell them you are not satisfied with it and you want to bring the computer back in with your monitor and you want them to get your display correctly adjusted. You might also borrow a monitor from someone and try it on your computer. Of course, don't change their monitor settings by using the control buttons on their monitor; just connect it and see whether your display is still off the right edge of the screen, etc. I'm afraid you've not gotten good service from that repair shop. Your comment about that the computer seems slower than before you took it there is definitely not good, if true. And, really, a Pentium III should work fine for email and web browsing on a dialup connection, even a broadband (DSL or cable) connection if it has enough memory. What type of Internet service do you have, dailup, DSL, cable? Do you know how much memory your computer has? If not right click on My Computer and select Properties. You should see it there. And, what version of Windows do you have? HI there! Wow - thanks SO much! Someone came over and adjusted the display screen - knew what he was doing - and the stuff that came up! I'm SO impressed with the info that p.c.'c will give you about themselves. Windows XP pro (although I don't have Word or Excel) sp2. 601 MHz. 192 MB of RAM Uniserve ADSL high-speed. You're right - I am afraid - very afraid! It is a little slower and the strobing cursor is annoying and the printing is too small, even though I set it for Largest, but I really don't want to take it back there, again. Does 192 MB mean that's all I have left - or what it will hold? There's got to be a way to replace I.E. with something safer and less troublesome, but I'm not sure if I have enough memory to download (Whatever that might be) and then find a way - MUCH easier than Microsoft Help offered, to UNinstall I.E. You're wonderful for assisting me! Did you tell your mom I said she did a great job? Thanks, AnnDownload, unzip, install and run EVEREST Home Edition Everest Select Computer>Summary from the left hand screen. Right click in the right hand screen & select Copy All Paste the details in here.Hi Anna I would just like to make a sugestion,There are groups all over the world I believe it is in 67 Countries now called freecycle. If you go to freecycle.org and pick where you live and join this group they might be able to help you as well. What it is ,is a group that gives things away instead of throwing it out or storing it.On the one I belong to ( they will all be different depending on where you live) I have seen many people give away newer moniters as well as computers and many other great things. This is not spam ... lol as a matter of fact the person who told me about lived in a different Country and thats what she had just went and got was a newer17 inch moniter that someone gave her. This might help if money is tight.GL SHELLEYI'm sure you actually have 256MB (that's MegaBytes) of memory installed, but your system uses onboard video (meaning, the display adapter is integrated into the motherboard as opposed to being an add-on card installed in a slot on the motherboard) and it allocates 64MB to the video function. In many such systems, what Windows as RAM is the actual/physical memory installed less the amount allocated to onboard video. Thus, 256MB minus 64MB equals 192MB. To increase this, you would need to install additional memory. If you'd like to know what this would cost, visit www.crucial.com and use their Memory Advisor™ Tool; you need to know the make and model of your computer to get the info. And, more memory would make a noticeable difference in performance. Again, crucial.com will tell you how much memory your computer can accomodate and what upgrade options are available; in other words, what memory modules (128MB, 256MB, etc.) you could install in your computer. Now, I imagine you'd rather not spend any money on upgrades. So, I'd bet there are some things that could be done to improve your computer's performance without buying any addtional hardware. One thing to look at is how many processes are running in your system under normal circumstances. If you hit Ctrl/Alt/Del and open Task Manager, how many processes are running? How many icons do you have in the Notification Area, the lower right corner of your screen, just left of the time display? Those are all running in the background and using part of your system resources. Getting rid of unnecessary processes can improve performance. How large is your hard drive, and how much free space do you have? To find out, click on My Computer. What does it show for Total Size and Free Space for drive C? I belong to the Licking County (Ohio) Comuter Society. They have a semi-annual computer recylcing drive. And, they do give some used computers, monitors, etc. to individuals. |

Answer» Not sure... how does a K7 compare to a Athlon 64 3700+?Quote Au contraire'...I've only seen it when it was a poll. Guess I came on late then. And Dilbert, an Athlon 64 is a K8. The K7 was the Athlon XP, the old SEMPRON models, etc.Quote Dead_Reckon, what's the point of having all those computers? By my count, you have at least a dozen. Do you have keyboards, mice, and monitors for all of them? most of them do not have cases, they are just motherboards. scrap man, lots of scrap. besides, why throw away what you can use? the 950mhz amd's dont have motherboards, nor do i know if they even work, the 350mhz PII has a motherboard, however it nor the 400mhz PII have a case, heck, three of my 700mhz celerons dont even have motherboards to go with them. im a packrat, always have been, always will be. heck, my two 210w floor standing foster speakers where trash when i found em.. still look like they should be in the trash, well, the cases do, and the tweeters dont work, but the subs are really really good. cases just needed a bit of redneck REPAIRING (window tar, and floorboard trim nails), the bass tube in one of them is held in with window sealing tar even. i have a 15" NEC monitor that i pulled offa the curb that works great, bit small, ugly, and rough around the edges, but it works. oh, the 900mhz duron's board is screwed also. you see, a lot of my motherboards and such do not even have a case, monitor, keyboard, or anything to go with them. there just spare parts. stuff i have collected over the years. heck, i have two perfectly working 1986 NES's that i pulled from the curb also, along with a SNES. i am a packrat and a scavenger, if its good, i take it. tis true what they say, one MANS trash is another mans treasure. (belive it or not, i hauled both of the three foot tall foster speakers home on my bike) oh, and, yes, this was created as a poll.. i wouldnt "give" something away EITHER.. NOTHING goes with out a equal price being paid to me. pretty sweet actually, my neighbor had me fix up like two old computers, and she's payin me like fifty bucks for em. |

Solve : realplayer? |

Answer» Hello Some sites let you choose whether to use WMP or Real Player. I use WMP; if the site insists on Real Player, I don't use the site.If the site insists on either I prefer to leave . . . Nice to see you back Fed. And real alternative is GREAT, so is quicktime alternative for anyone looking for an alternative to that.Quote QuoteWell, that does PROHIBIT you from viewing some sites then. For example, if you want to view video on cbsnews.com, you have two options, as shown below:Some sites let you choose whether to use WMP or Real Player. I use WMP; if the site insists on Real Player, I don't use the site.If the site insists on either I prefer to leave . . . Windows users already have some version of WMP. It does limit me, but I just don't LIKE loading either. I actually have WMP11 because I though it might work a bit better than WMP10, but I don't think it does. It's just that RealPlayer takes an age to load, and I don't like how WMP11 looks and feels. The alternative can load clips in web pages anyway, if I need to.I know that If you happen to be in the UK, the BBC site tends to use RealPlayer but the BBC have had a special version made that REMOVES some of the rubbish. Real Alternative does work but it throws up problems with streamed content (or at least the version I had did).I visited the BBC site and clicked a link to view video. A screen opened prompting me to choose between WMP and RealPlayer, same as cbsnews.com. Not sure why anyone would need to see a BBC feed but that's just me...Quote I visited the BBC site and clicked a link to view video. A screen opened prompting me to choose between WMP and RealPlayer, same as cbsnews.com. I will admit most of their content is in both formats but there are still one or two exceptions. |
