Solve : Cannot remove a picture grandson downloaded on our computer!?

Answer»

Grandson loaded a picture that shows only when computer is turned on, and it is the last thing we see when computer is shut down. It is not wallpaper or background. And grandson does not remember what he did. We find the picture offensive. It is not in the "display" menu. Can anyone HELP??? THANKS!So it's the SPLASH screen that shows before Windows loads correct ? ?
If so we're gonna need to know a lot more about the machine as the editing features are DIFFERENT from machine to machine...Sorry, I have to ask this. What kind of picture exactly? If it involves naked people and he isnt that old and he seriously has no idea what he did, there could be a possibility of some SORT of virus. But you dont see the regular start up screen anymore?

Solve : laptop keeps returning to system32 failure message?

Answer»

After loading windows xp, activating it, it was working just FINE. Then in install updates and it reboots it crashes and comes up with system 32 not found and it will not repair. I've done the reinstalling operating system 3 times now and after installing anything after the operating system it crashes. What am I doing wrong?Run hard drive diagnostics: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Make sure, you select tool, which is appropriate for the brand of your hard drive.
Depending on the program, it'll create bootable floppy, or bootable CD.
If downloaded file is of .iso type, use ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/ to burn .iso file to a CD (select "WRITE image file to disc" option), and make the CD bootable.

NOTE. If your hard drive is made by Toshiba, UNFORTUNATELY, you're out of luck, because Toshiba doesn't provide any diagnostic tool.

A. If you have more than one RAM module installed, try STARTING computer with one RAM stick at a time.

NOTE Keep in mind, the manual check LISTED above is always superior to the software check, listed below. DO NOT proceed with memtest, if you can go with option A

B. If you have only one RAM stick installed...
...run memtest...

1. Download - Pre-Compiled Bootable ISO (.zip)
2. Unzip downloaded memtest86+-2.11.iso.zip file.
3. Inside, you'll find memtest86+-2.11.iso file.
4. Download, and install ImgBurn: http://www.imgburn.com/
5. Insert blank CD into your CD drive.
6. Open ImgBurn, and click on Write image file to disc
7. Click on Browse for a file... icon:

8. Locate memtest86+-2.11.iso file, and click Open button.
9. Click on ImgBurn green arrow to start burning bootable memtest86 CD:

10. Once the CD is created, boot from it, and memtest will automatically start to run.

The running program will look something like this depending on the size and number of ram modules installed:

It's recommended to run 5-6 passes. Each pass contains very same 8 tests.

This will show the progress of the test. It can take a while. Be patient, or leave it running overnight.

The following image is the test results area:

The most important item here is the “errors” line. If you see ANY errors, even one, most likely, you have bad RAM.

Solve : Fraudulent website account?

Answer»

I posted this initially in the wrong forum, but here goes again. Is it possible for a website profile/account to migrate from one website to a new or different website ? Reason I ask is that I just deleted an account on an internet dating website that I'm almost positive I never created. Problem is that my girlfriend thinks I was active on this site and I wasn't. There's a slim, very slim possibility that I created the account/profile but I sure don't remember doing so. This website is not my "speed" and I wouldn't have been attracted to it to begin with. Nevertheless, I did try internet dating several years ago and haven't been active in well over three years so yes, accounts were created that's all in the past, pre-girlfriend. She doesn't think so, but that's a different issue. I do remember continuing to receive "phishing" emails to my old screen names for about a year or so after ending my foray into internet dating, but they for the most part have all disappeared except for the one in question and one more that's recently started to show up again (yahoo). Is there a logical explanation for getting messages from a site I never belonged too ? Also, do internet dating sites commonly maintain deleted profiles or account info, and if so, is that legal to do ? Welcome to CH.

The internet is open to everyone. And is full of Fraud, deception...
and C**p worse than what you could imagine.

You could try to contact the administrator of the sire, but if you do not remember your password and user name you will not get far. Some (fraudulent) adult dating sites do things like copy a Yahoo/Facebook/Myspace profile onto their site, picture and all, and use them to look like they have a bunch of users.

As Geek-9pm said. It's the internet...Quote from: aabikrman on October 10, 2009, 04:46:20 PM

There's a slim, very slim possibility that I created the account/profile but I sure don't remember doing so.

If you were able to delete the account, you were probably the one who created it. Maybe you were drunk when you created it and just don't remember Thanks for the replies and possibilities. I still don't think I created the account/profile mainly because it wasn't the KIND of website I would even look at let ALONE create an account in. I was able to delete the account because when you followed the link back from the phishing email, the account was already logged in. I didn't have to use an account name or password to gain access to the account since the account was already open. Since the account was already open and I saw the "account" tab, I clicked on it and that took me to a page that allowed me to delete the account. I KNOW I've not used the website and I've never been billed by the website, I check my credit card statements every month, so the whole thing is bizarre from my perspective. Hopefully, my deleting the account will stop the phishing emails but I'm mildly skeptical. I'm a little concerned about the possibility of identity theft. Hopefully, this is just a case of a website creating an account/profile from my earlier internet dating forays. But the part I don't understand is how did they get my email unless it was maybe a website that was renamed/changed/recreated and the "new" website is initially populated with old/previous accounts/profiles Someone got your email.
Someone set up a fake account.
Someone sent you a BOGUS email, you followed the link.
Someone was phishing.

Don't click on spam links in spam emails and never enter any personal information on a website like that.

Edit: P.S. That's my theory. I could be totally wrong. You did the right thing.
And now may be a good time to review you Credit cards. You may want to close some and start new ones. Or ask for a new number.

Here is an I dean I got from my daughter. You can buy a debit card that is as good as a credit card for most on-line transactions. Use it to limit the damage that a fraudulent site could do.

And never, never give out back account information unless it is a special account you have set up the will not allow overdraft and never has more that $200 or whatever you would spend at one time.

It happens.Quote from: evilfantasy on October 10, 2009, 08:46:48 PM

Edit: P.S. That's my theory. I could be totally wrong.

I'd bet that some people have actually tried to pull off this kind of thing.. I'm certainly glad I came ACROSS this thread

I almost feel ashamed , I think I could have the most cluttered desktop, AMAZINGLY most of the icons are being used or have been recently put there. Wow. I am certain you never cleaned your room when you were young either.

You know, there's an auto arrange button. Actually I'm happy to admit that my room and office is almost always pretty clean. Also I have heard of auto arrange but the icons are arranged in projects. For example the group of icons in the bottom right are page modifications currently being done, center grouped icons are weekly projects (ie mail scripts and programs), left grouped icons are testing programs or recently ran programs.I'm more concerned with how many files you actually have open! Solve : Researchers Explore Scrapping Internet

Answer»
NEW YORK (AP) - Although it has already taken nearly four decades to get this far in building the Internet, some university researchers with the federal government's BLESSING want to scrap all that and start over.

The idea may seem unthinkable, even absurd, but many believe a "clean slate" approach is the only way to truly address security, mobility and other challenges that have cropped up since UCLA professor Leonard Kleinrock helped supervise the first exchange of meaningless test data between two machines on Sept. 2, 1969.

The Internet "works well in many situations but was designed for completely different assumptions," said Dipankar Raychaudhuri, a Rutgers University professor overseeing three clean-slate projects. "It's sort of a miracle that it continues to work well today."

No longer constrained by slow connections and computer processors and high costs for storage, researchers say the time has come to rethink the Internet's underlying architecture, a move that could mean replacing networking equipment and rewriting software on computers to better channel future traffic over the existing pipes.

Even Vinton Cerf, one of the Internet's founding fathers as co- developer of the key communications techniques, said the exercise was "generally healthy" because the current technology "does not satisfy all needs."

One challenge in any reconstruction, though, will be balancing the interests of various constituencies. The first time around, researchers were able to toil away in their labs quietly. Industry is playing a bigger role this time, and law enforcement is bound to make its needs for wiretapping known.

There's no evidence they are meddling yet, but once any research looks promising, "a number of people (will) want to be in the drawing room," said Jonathan Zittrain, a law professor affiliated with Oxford and Harvard universities. "They'll be wearing coats and ties and spilling out of the venue."

The National SCIENCE Foundation wants to build an experimental research network known as the Global Environment for Network Innovations, or GENI, and is funding several projects at universities and elsewhere through Future Internet Network Design, or FIND.

Rutgers, Stanford, Princeton, Carnegie Mellon and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are among the universities pursuing individual projects. Other government AGENCIES, including the Defense Department, have also been exploring the concept.

The European Union has also backed research on such initiatives, through a program known as Future Internet Research and Experimentation, or FIRE. Government officials and researchers met last month in Zurich to discuss early findings and goals.

A new network could run parallel with the current Internet and eventually replace it, or perhaps aspects of the research could go into a major overhaul of the existing architecture.

These clean-slate efforts are still in their early stages, though, and aren't expected to bear fruit for another 10 or 15 years—assuming Congress comes through with funding.

Guru Parulkar, who will become executive director of Stanford's initiative after heading NSF's clean-slate programs, estimated that GENI alone could cost $350 million, while government, university and industry spending on the individual projects could collectively reach $300 million. Spending so far has been in the tens of millions of dollars.

And it could take billions of dollars to replace all the software and hardware deep in the legacy systems.

Clean-slate advocates say the cozy world of researchers in the 1970s and 1980s doesn't necessarily mesh with the realities and needs of the commercial Internet.

"The network is now mission critical for too many people, when in the (early days) it was just experimental," Zittrain said.

The Internet's early architects built the system on the principle of trust. Researchers largely knew one another, so they kept the shared network open and flexible—qualities that proved key to its rapid growth.

But spammers and hackers arrived as the network expanded and could roam freely because the Internet doesn't have built-in mechanisms for KNOWING with certainty who sent what.

The network's designers also assumed that computers are in fixed locations and always connected. That's no longer the case with the proliferation of laptops, personal digital assistants and other mobile devices, all hopping from one wireless access point to another, losing their signals here and there.

Engineers tacked on improvements to support mobility and improved security, but researchers say all that adds complexity, reduces performance and, in the case of security, amounts at most to bandages in a high-stakes game of cat and mouse.

Workarounds for mobile devices "can work quite well if a small fraction of the traffic is of that type," but could overwhelm computer processors and create security holes when 90 percent or more of the traffic is mobile, said Nick McKeown, co-director of Stanford's clean- slate program.

The Internet will continue to face new challenges as applications require guaranteed transmissions—not the "best effort" approach that works better for e-mail and other tasks with less time sensitivity.

Think of a doctor using teleconferencing to perform a surgery remotely, or a customer of an Internet-based phone service needing to make an emergency call. In such cases, even small delays in relaying data can be deadly.

And one day, SENSORS of all sorts will likely be Internet capable.

Solve : Outlook Express Address book help needed?

Hi
I have imported an address list and am unable to get it into a separate folder.
It keeps going into my Main Identity list.
Makes it a problem when I add more to it as they all MIX with my existing private addresses.

Can anyone help?

I BELIEVE you want to create an additional address book with a different name and then import your CONTACT list into it...Thanks Patio

That sounds OK but how?
I think I am missing somthing simple here.

I used file Import and import other address but there is no reference to being able to PUT the list into a separate folder.

It's interesting that we all know people who use EMAIL, but we seem to go blank when asked specifics.
I keep getting emails with the entire mailing lists spread out across the top...

Just a tip if anyone is into mailing large lists you may want to try http://www.mapilab.com/outlook_express/oe_send_personally/

Bennie,

What you want to do is create a new folder in your address book and copy those contacts to it.

Instructions:

1) To create a subfolder in the Address Book, click File, select New Folder. Type a name for the folder in the Folder Name box, click OK.

You now have a new subfolder in your address book and you can name it anything you want. Copy the contacts over to this new folder to keep them separate from your Main Identity Contacts.

I hope you find this information useful...

Solve : dual-monitor wallpapers??

Answer»

i have dual 17 inch CRT monitors, and i was wondering if anyone knew a good source to get wallpapers from. i have yet to find anything on google.

if it helps, the DISPLAY resolution on both monitors is 1152 x 864 @ 32 bit. it is set in dual view mode and im tired of having a single wallpaper on both monitors. which is why i want dual-monitor wallpapers, so the wallpaper can span onto the next monitor as if its just one wide view. if ANYONE knows a site that has these, please TELL me. i am getting quite bored of staring at the same crap on both monitors.

thanks in advance.Googled it:
Some cool ones

Not the best:

Google http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=Dual+screen+wallpaper&btnG=Google+SearchAnother option you might TRY is different wallpapers on each monitor if your SOFTWARE supports it. I use nVidia cards for two monitors. nVidia's nView Desktop Manager software allows that.i'll have to enable the setting, but, i'll try that also. thanks. Here Ya Go...Quote

Solve : Tape/Audio Recorder?

Answer»

Hey EVERYONE, I was thinking about getting a recorder.
I want to know if I should get a Tape recorder or an electronic audio recorder.
which is better in terms of quality and the time it takes to START and record and it would be nice if you know how much it would be.

Thanks for any help.Do you mainly want a voice recorder, or do you want to record music? Last summer, I bought an mp3 PLAYER (256MB) that also is an FM RADIO and voice recorder. I'm inclined to thing digital is the better way to go nowadays. yeah, i just want a good quality voice recorder. I have a recorder on my mp3 but it takes a real long time for the thing to start up and it is very soft.

Tape recorders can start recording immediently.
digital recorders, although better quality, are they slower to start up because i need something fast.

Solve : Your Network?

Answer»

On another computer FORUM they have a thread like this and it's interesting to see what people's setups are. Just post a diagram or something of your home network.

Attached is a JPEG of my network.

[old attachment deleted by admin]Nice diagram there. Mine WOULD be similar, same number of computers connecting to the Internet via a router but all them connected by wire to a router. This includes 3 desktops and a laptop. The laptop has been used wirelessly but is currently connected by Cat5 cable to the router, like the desktops.

Have you ever thought about adding print server to the network? It would connect to the router and the printer would be connected to it. That way, no individual computer must running in order for any other computer to use the printer. This is a diagram I drew for the site a year or so that still is about what my network looks like with 3-4 more wireless devices.

I have thought about that. However, I don't have the money to buy a low end machine from someone and my mom/dad isn't going to cough it up when we don't "need" one.

Is it POSSIBLE to have a print/file server running as one? I'm assuming it is. But I just want to make sure.I'm talking about a dedicated device, not a computer used as a server. For example, see Print servers from newegg.com.

I don't know the answer to your QUESTION about a print/file server running as one. Quote from: SilentAssasin64 on March 31, 2007, 03:05:50 PM

Solve : Installing XP from DOS. Help me!?

Answer»

Hi there my computer was working fine a week ago with windows xp. Then it booted up one morning and said that a FILE called \system32\ntoskrnl.exe was missing and to reinstall the file.
I put a windows 98 startup disk in and the windows xp cd and i get 3 options. I select start command prompt with cd enabled but windows xp cannot be run from DOS mode.
I get the impression from other people on the net that when you start your PC with just the windows xp cd that you get a windows xp setup screen and YOUV got all kinds of options like recovery and stuff but I dont. It just goes straight to the error message (when I haven't got a 98 startup disk in), so clearly I need to FIX the error from DOS.

Please help anyone! :-Have you installed Linux before this?

You can download the file to make the XP 6 disk boot set
below link. There is ALSO a single bootdisk for XP setup at
the bottom of the page.I haven't tried that one.LOL

http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files010.shtml

A thought:Is your Bios set to boot from CD-Rom?
it's moi again and no it wasn't a linux installation prior to the current one. I'l try going into the bios to boot from cd if I can find it and let you know. Afterall that would be a heck of a lot easier than poncing AROUND with 20 year old command prompts.

Thanks for the post anyway.
Make sure the CD is given higher boot priority than the harddrive, put the cd in and restart.

Solve : Unfamiliar icon in toolbar?

Answer»

Windows XP
service packs - unknown
current adware/spyware/virus programs - Symantec, Adaware, CounterSpy (installed today)

A few days ago my comp was ATTACKED by Spydawn and it was only then that I also noticed another strange icon on my toolbar (or is it a taskbar? the bottom right hand CORNER of the desktop). The Spydawn appears to finally be gone (thanks to CounterSpy), but the other icon is still present.

It's red and has the appearance of a hand-drawn "number" sign. Hovering the mouse over it reveals no information, and a right click only gives me the options to "Update now", "Show info", or "Exit".

After my recent battle with trojans, spyware, and other malicious threats, I am extremely reluctant even to click on the "Show info" option.

Can someone please tell me what this icon is, whether I should be concerned, and if so, what steps I should take.

Thank you for your help. I apologize if I've posted incorrectly, in the wrong area, or about something that's previously been covered. (I checked the FAQS but found nothing there, and also checked the most recent posts in this area and the area concerning spyware.)should be just a anti-virus icon

They may leave behind programs, (such as this # icon). It sounds like you had spyware bundled software.

Yes, it works again.I may have lost it - email notifications of new posts in subscribed threads - again.

Would someone be kind enough to make a post in this thread, so I can be sure? I'll check back shortly.

Thanks

Thanks.

Not sure what 'normal' is, for elapsed TIME for the emailed notification to show up in the inbox.
I'll give it at LEAST 5 minutes. That should be enough time.

If no show, I'll have to try changing my account's email address, and changing it back.

Patio - are you still HANGING around?

Can you, or anybody else READING, reply to this?
Let's see if any improvement.

I changed my email in my profile, and sent myself a PM. Never got it.

That's different from the last time... PM notifications never failed before, it was only new post notifications.
Sent myself another. Never got it either.

So, changed my email back to the original, and PM'd myself. Haven't gotten that one either.

Now with a reply from you or anyone, let's see if I get a notification of new post.
I have a bad feeling about it.

Got it!

And the first two PMs finally SHOWED up too... at the same time as the notification for this last reply from you.

Something must have been holding them back, and they all went out at once. In the past, they arrived within a minute, just like this notification about your last post.

Thanks!

Here's another.

Solve : My comp is dead!?

Answer»

The chassis fan on my comp wasnt workin RIGHT but the other TWO(processor and power supply) were working just fine. I opened the side panel to the comp and after shutting down the computer, I used a VACUUM and removed the dust and other dirt build-up from the board. I then attempted to re-boot the comp and i GOT nothing. I checked the power cord, power supply, and the other connections removed the memory and all and still nothing. Any ideas? thanks.Did you perhaps press the vaccume directly against the computer parts you were cleaning, or get it too close?
What sort of computer is it?
Did you try disconnecting the non-functioning fan and then try starting?
I kept the vac just close enough to get the stuff and i did attempt to re-boot w/out the fan... it is a micron pc case with parts from all over not sure about the specs...Vacuum cleaners have killed many computers. may the computer rest in pieceQuote

Since the problem now resides (most likely) in a damaged chip, I can only say this:

Solve : OT Rant - Hacking?

Answer»

I really do GET annoyed with people who label others as hackers, or activities as hacking, without knowing the real meaning of the word.
So please, next time you USE the term hacking, hacker, or similar, please consider the real meaning of the word and consider changing the word you use to one which is more appropriate if necessary.
If you don't know what it means, please look it up.
This isn't GETTING at anyone in particular, it's just something that gets on my nerves.
Thanks.
Calum. Can I guess what happened? You where playing Battlefront and someone called you a hacker? I find in games people label people as hackers because they can't handle the fact they're being "pwned".Actually no, but my friends have been called hackers because they can aim well or they glitched through a wall by accident, that sort of thing.
I do find that happens a lot in games though.
So whilst that wasn't the trigger for my rant, it's another instance of people being wrongly labelled. Here is the real definition of hacker, and here is the definition of a cracker.Aye, that's part of it.
There are many definitions.
The main thing is that people get the two confused.
Or use the terms about hacking to mean utterly different things.I know, it does get annoying.I'm afraid that "hacker" has become synonymous with "cracker", in common parlance. This happens a lot with our beautiful language. It evolves. In time you will come to accept this.

Peace.

In time perhaps.
But not right now, it just makes me angry.
LOL.
And another LOL for Dilbert, nice quote.if there is something more annoying than someone being LABELED a hacker, its a person being labeled a hacker when they are nothing more than a script kiddie. script kiddies that think they can hack are typically more annoying than real hackers..Quote

I actually emailed the Daily Mail the other day on this topic.Hacker:Someone with a severe cough.

Cracker: sometimes "white cracker", is a USUALLY pejorative term for a white person, mainly used in the Southern United States, but in recent decades it has entered common usage throughout the United States.

What really should happen to MS Tech support...

I don't know. I really haven't dealt with MS Tech Support for a long time. I'm GUESSING that, like tech support from so many companies, it's gone downhill in recent years. That seems to be the message implied in your title and post. Its hard-wear related problem.
Someone should figure out a user friendly format, that suits the fix, but the more value something is to users the less money someone else makes.

I think it will happen in time, like automobiles, instead long term quality being pushed off to consumers, this is replaced by call backs,
elevating quality, . . .

The fewer call backs the better for both the, user and manufacturer,

of course that will be impossible without an advocate, reducing down time for all computer users instead of the BIG INDUSTRIAL accounts, international customers, and hundreds of thousands of licensee's, (who after all have their own money's coming in and then oh yeah you their best CUSTOMER) , . .both national and international for the richest whatssizname, the MS Bullfrog, the Big GREEN Backer.

Solve : scratches on flat panel?

Answer»

my 18 month old daughter got a pencil and went to town on my lcd flat panel. does ANYONE know of a way to get the marks out? I used rubbing alcohol to clean the pencil off, but there are still marks from where the pencil was drug across the screen.
Thanks for any helpOuch! It sounds as if you've already attempted to clean it by the methods we recommended. Unfortunately it almost sounds as if the ACTUAL screen is damaged by the marks made by your daughter, which likely means they'll be unable to be removed. Give this post a few days and see if any of the other members have encountered this issue and has a resolution or if they're able to dig anything up that could help resolve this issue. This wont resolve the issue, but as a future suggestion:

If you plan to keep a laptop in an environment that has things that fit into this scenario (whether its kids with pencils, or a place with tools in operation) you may want to CONSIDER a screen protector.

These will help with some ISSUES. If the protector is damaged, you can simply remove it, and all is well.

If someone knows the real name of these protection films, please post it. I'm afraid the flat panel is done for. You might want to consider using an old cheap glass-fronted CRT monitor until your daughter is old enough to have an allowance out of which she can PAY for replacements.

i notice two things that you should consider.

1: NEVER use the stock intel cooling, its just a round chunk of aluminum with a fan that slows down as it gets hotter.

2: make sure you have a coolant fan of some kind on the hard drive, or it will get pretty toasty.

nice choice of chipset though, Nforce4 rules! i have the same chipset in my system, rock solid, though it does run a bit warm... i am running a pentium D 805 dual core 2.66ghz w/ 1mb per core (2mb total). instead of a p4. it was cheaper, only cost me about ninety bucks.I guess / hope it's all in your preparation and installation technique* maybe .... :-/

Pro’s: Stock heatsink is fine. No extra needed, Cons: None - in properly cooled case and room, stock fan will provide adequate cooling. I have installed hundreds of cpu's with this heatsink and fan. You just have to install it correctly.,
Pros: Amazingly stable, able to burn DVDs while playing Battlefield2142 in the foreground without a hitch. Great warranty, and the Intel site has tons of free and useful utilities. Idles at 34C, full flat out load temp is at 41C. < that is questionable ?
Cons: None after 2 months!
Other Thoughts: The stock cooler is fine, but I removed Intel's thermal tape and applied a dab of Arctic Silver 5 instead, and got a 4-6C drop in temps. , My case has good airflow so I don't get any heat issues
Mine is overclocked to 3.8 and still hasnt broke 35 C, although my tower makes more noise than the average bear because it has 6 fans....Ill sacrifice the small amount of noise, to have a lightning overclocked pentium 4 running low temps any day of the week. Cons: ummmm.... NONE! maybe too fast for slow people You Must Buy This Product!!! Other Thoughts: This chip is design to run overclock, it will do 4.02ghz easy with the stock voltage. I have two currently running at 4.02ghz (237x17), and they're super fast no need for anything higher than that. Pros: Great processor, behaves like a dual core half the time, and runs as stable and fast as I've ever seen a processor in this class run. Great buy.

Cons: cooler is grossly inadequate, HEAT. I almost blew the CPU running 3DMark03 during the CPU Test
My advice is to order a good aftermarket heatsink/cooler and some artic silver 5 to go along with this CPU
Runs a little hot with stock HS/Fan, $50-100 cpu fan and you're set,,
Cons: Stock heat sink and fan actually work OK but a Zalman heatsink makes a world of difference.
Cons: Attachment of Intel Fan and Heatsink. After engaging the push PINS into the motherboard, you need to lock each one in place by using your thumb to push down with extreme force, followed by two faint clicks as the locks engage, just before your new MoBo snaps in half. If your MoBo is still in one piece and your thumb is sore following installation, your new CPU shouldn't overheat. A little disappointed with the stock cooler though Cons: It's just the damned stock fan. Other Thoughts: runs at 203 degrees F at idle!
Did not use the stock/retail heatsink.,, Comments: OK 1) If you build your own computers anyone should know by now that you should replace the stock fans on Intels. CPU itself is good but Intel continues to ship sub-par fans and cooling devices with its CPUs.
Comments: I've built countless intel systems. I know how hot these new chips normally run. I just built a system for a client with this chip and its idle at 37C and peaked at 49C running super pi WITH THE STOCK HSF AND THERMAL PAD!!!! I know this is rare for these things but its rocking. The side DUCT in the antec case I have it in helps a lot as well. I'm very impressed with this chip.
Looking good.
I was about to say your CPU may prove a bit of a bottleneck when you have SLI, but I see it's OC'd to 3.8, so forget that.
Basically, it looks awesome, and it'll be even better when you have the second GPU.
And very upgradeable too, a Core 2 Duo (or better, Core 2 Quad) will fit in nicely one day.
Great build.

Think he already has one there. •5.25" bay convert to 3 x 3.5" HDD Module << can put 3 HD's in here with 120mm cooling
•Easy to use and install- •Low noise
•120 x 120 x 25mm fan, 1300 RPM, 17 dBA
•3 x 3.5" HDD module with 120mm blue LED fan

Due to the extreme depletion of the $$$, I will attempt the stock fan/heatsink[ the stock fan & heatsink are pretty darn HUGE] for now with artic5..
my "possible" problem could be my PSU - when I do get the 2nd vid-card, I could have an AMP issue
utilizing the sli config & power drain.. the Nvidia site says min- 28 amp on the 7 series cards in SLI.
My HOMEWORK states my 500 W psu should have max: 34 amps << still questionable*
"probably won't be overclocking for awhile so the cpu should be fine until an upgrade, interested in checking out the stock timings on that G-skill memory, I have read tons on the 800 memory chips and these stock #"s are higher then Corsair XMS, and about 50.00 cheaper ....

REVISED * 3-11-07

I think I'd rather be safe then sorry, going to take your advice... I don't want to have to take everything apart later down the road!

ZALMAN CNPS9500 AT 2 Ball CPU Cooling Fan/Heatsink *** personally, i would never use one of the stock intel coolers, the best i have seen them cool a P4 of that type is about 55c idle, which is roughly one hundred and thirty one degrees, i have seen them get well over one hundred and sixty with the cooling just while installing a few programs, and mind you, most CPU's cant take anything above one hundred and forty for long before they fry. you can get a decent fan and heatsink for it for about twenty bucks, which is a worth while investment, but if you want to try the stock cooling, go ahead, though i advise against it.

2: the staff where for the most part a bunch 'tards who seem to think that anyone who isn't going all A's and B's is someone who needs to go into special ed and LIKELY has issues in the home, but in reality its just issues with the staff, or simply not giving a crap. i hate idiots who think they can do anything just because they have a bit of authority. well, in general, i hate authority.

im in a GED program now, HOPEFULLY in may i will have my GED, which is worth a bit more than a IEP diploma. not much, but, still worth more. funny thing is, i scored an eleventh GRADE level on the entry tests to the GED program, and i have not EVEN completed the tenth grade (slept through my classes). over the past year before i went into the GED program i cant even begin to tell you how many days i missed. at least FOUR weeks worth.

Now today it dissapeared and just won't come back.It is there for a second which gave me enough time to click on the internet and get here, but everything is gone again.I did a AVG scan and it had to trojans but were taken care of.I can do nothing but do alt ctrl del to shut down and restart. Everything SEEMS to be working once I get into it,but thats not very easy either. CAN anyone help me .....

Thanks ShelleyShelley,

When you say everything is disappearing is it the icons and the start bar and everything else disappearing leaving your desktop empty? Or is your screen going black as if someone is turning off the monitor?

Also I assume this is Windows XP am I correct?Hi

I am sorry yes it is XP and when I say it dissapears I mean everything, Icons start bar tool bar,but it does not go black it just leaves a desktop picture that I had on it.Nothing else. I have got it to stay on this time again finally and as long as I don't shut down I THINK it will be ok.It is only when I shut down that it HAPPENS on restart. Thanks for the reply

ShelleyHuh that is an interesting issue. Because I'm not familiar with the issue I did some searching and did happen to come across a page with several solutions that should help you. Try the recommendations on the below link.

http://aving.net/usa/news/default.asp?mode=read&c_num=39370&C_Code=02&SP_Num=66Cool, but surely running your STYLUS over your screen, if you actually TOUCH the screen, is going to knacker it.That's DEFINITELY true however I'd imagine (or hope) they'd USE some type of stylus with a cloth tip.Thats neat

Its a bit big though, I dont think I would CONSIDER it for portability.

It would have its pro's though, thats for sure

Solve : Selling Domain Names...?

Answer»

Even though this may be the correct FORUM to post this...it may not be the RIGHT forum community...

Anyhow...

I've done a Google search and have looked up some info about free domain name appraisals...I've CHECKED several sites and have come up with appraisals anywhere from $2,000 to $235,000 (USD) for my site's domain name.

Granted...the appraisal will take several aspects of your domain into consideration...it depends on the appraiser, but most check for search ENGINE rank, link popularity, name size, and other factors.

Other factor(s) would be...just how much I think it's worth and how much I'd expect to GET from the sale.

Just thought I'd post, here, to see if anyone has any other info for me...tips...advice...anything of that nature.

I appreciate you taking the time to visit this post and submitting your comments.

Solve : Fastest Home Internet Speed??

Answer»

I would like to know:
What is the fastest speed for internet you can get for a residential area?
I have FiberOptic at 100MBPS, I was wondering what that compares to (HAHAHA! Now Comcast seems SLOW! Now THATS Comcastic!) I use Verizon Fiber (my ex- uses Comcast Cable), when I visited them in Florida, I did not notice any REAL difference in just surfing the net. Personally, I think fiber Optic is the best thing since Farrah Fawcett on Charlie Angels !

Last Result:
Download Speed: 5185 kbps (648.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1596 kbps (199.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

35.00 month, I have their lowest package. + I have the house next to me online wireless (200) FEET away !!

here's a LINK to test yours *..........................

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/Hmmm, let's see. honvetops Verizon Fiber is about 3.5 times faster than my DSL (see image in my signture block) and Zylstra's FiberOptic service is about 19 times (100/5.185) faster than honvetops, if my CALCULATIONS are correct.

Let's talk about cost. So, what's it's costing, guys? Frankly, if the FiberOptic were available here, at that blazing 100MBPS, I don't think I could justify spending much more than I now spend for Internet access. For email and web surfing, 100MBPS is just way, way more than necessary.Comcast Cable HOME Speeds run at 4-6MBPS
Comcast Business Speed runs at 6-12MBPS

My FiberOptics here is not from a big service provider, the lines are not jammed with communications, nor does the signal need to go far to get to our ISP.

Its around $34 a month
AND IT ROCKS!!!

I have noticed a speed difference, specifically with checking my email via Outlook.
We use Wireless, so the speed is cut in half.

It does depend a lot on the server side as well. Wow, that's amazing! My DSL costs about $25/mo.I think where I LIVE only has the options of dial up or fiber, so we got fiber.

About the same price as Comcast, which we had before. It took a while to get the Fiber, since the line had to be extended (it was in our backyard... not at the house)

For the record: there's nothing wrong with in-jokes. It just becomes frustrating when every single post is littered with half a dozen of 'em.Street1, joke away as far as I'm concerned. Rob's right that they can become boring if they are over used. But more boring underused than over.

Solve : please tell me how to permanently move display screen to left of monitor frame??

Answer»

Hi everyone:

I've been told being a newbie is a crime, but, I'm innocent!
My display screen is so far off to the right, I can't see the scroll arrows and I have no idea HOW to move it over, so I can see it. There is a long black "line" on the left, so there's definitely room to move it over.
I'm a Trekkie, not a Techie, so please, be gentle, explaining.
Thanks SO much for any help!

Have a super DAY!

Ann G.Does your monitor have buttons on front to CONTROL various settings? If so, take a look through the menus on it; most monitors allow shifting the screen right, left, up, or down.

If you don't have such buttons on your monitor, tell us the MAKE and model of your monitor. Hi Soybean - bless you for helping!

It's a VERY old Magnavox, convex monitor Model: MB7000 M001 and there are 4 very worn buttons on the bottom, front.

From left, to right, (I'll do my best, as they're pretty hard to see, now), there is a diamond shape on a button, then a horizontal line/button, then a +/button and an arrow, pointing to the right/button.

I just got the CPU back from being cleaned of corrupted files and there are some major changes, upon its return.

The display screen is obviously too far to the right, as mentioned.

I can barely read the print, though I set it for Largest Text, the cursor is strobing, (very annoying) and I guess because it's a Pentium 3, it is 'way slow. (Seems slower now, though).

I tried to download a Defragger/space maker, but it wouldn't download, so I'm guessing I have no memory left. (Don't know how to check that and don't know what KB and MB mean, anyway.)

So, I'm just trying to enjoy what little I've got - mostly for email, sending ecards and Messenger.

So now, I'm afraid to make any changes, 1) because it's not "the same" p.c. as I knew it before it was serviced; 2) I realized just how much I missed it, while it was gone for that week and 3) I can't afford to keep sending it out, if I do something wrong!

So, you can see just HOW much I appreciate your kindness in responding to my post for help.

Plesae tell your mother - she did a great job!

Thanks,

If you don't have such buttons on your monitor, tell us the make and model of your monitor.

Well, Ann, I get the impression you haven't tried using those buttons on your monitor because you're afraid you'll make it worse. Am I right? I really can't tell you how the controls on your monitor work, since there are many brands and models of monitors and so there are many variations in the designs and the how the control buttons and onscreen menus work. I have two Samsung 17 inch monitors, two different models; even they are quite different in this respect. I think you really need to just experiment with them.

However, there may be another issue here. I can't tell for sure but your comments about what you observed with your computer after getting it back from some repair service make me wonder whether the repair person installed the correct video drivers. I'm inclined to think you should call that repair shop and tell them your computer display is distorted, not aligned right, etc., and tell them you are not satisfied with it and you want to bring the computer back in with your monitor and you want them to get your display correctly adjusted.

You might also borrow a monitor from someone and try it on your computer. Of course, don't change their monitor settings by using the control buttons on their monitor; just connect it and see whether your display is still off the right edge of the screen, etc.

I'm afraid you've not gotten good service from that repair shop. Your comment about that the computer seems slower than before you took it there is definitely not good, if true.

And, really, a Pentium III should work fine for email and web browsing on a dialup connection, even a broadband (DSL or cable) connection if it has enough memory. What type of Internet service do you have, dailup, DSL, cable? Do you know how much memory your computer has? If not right click on My Computer and select Properties. You should see it there. And, what version of Windows do you have?

HI there!
Wow - thanks SO much!
Someone came over and adjusted the display screen - knew what he was doing - and the stuff that came up! I'm SO impressed with the info that p.c.'c will give you about themselves.
Windows XP pro (although I don't have Word or Excel) sp2.
601 MHz. 192 MB of RAM
Uniserve ADSL high-speed.
You're right - I am afraid - very afraid!
It is a little slower and the strobing cursor is annoying and the printing is too small, even though I set it for Largest, but I really don't want to take it back there, again.
Does 192 MB mean that's all I have left - or what it will hold?
There's got to be a way to replace I.E. with something safer and less troublesome, but I'm not sure if I have enough memory to download (Whatever that might be) and then find a way - MUCH easier than Microsoft Help offered, to UNinstall I.E.
You're wonderful for assisting me!
Did you tell your mom I said she did a great job?
Thanks,

I would just like to make a sugestion,There are groups all over the world I believe it is in 67 Countries now called freecycle. If you go to freecycle.org and pick where you live and join this group they might be able to help you as well. What it is ,is a group that gives things away instead of throwing it out or storing it.On the one I belong to ( they will all be different depending on where you live) I have seen many people give away newer moniters as well as computers and many other great things. This is not spam ... lol as a matter of fact the person who told me about lived in a different Country and thats what she had just went and got was a newer17 inch moniter that someone gave her. This might help if money is tight.GL

SHELLEYI'm sure you actually have 256MB (that's MegaBytes) of memory installed, but your system uses onboard video (meaning, the display adapter is integrated into the motherboard as opposed to being an add-on card installed in a slot on the motherboard) and it allocates 64MB to the video function. In many such systems, what Windows as RAM is the actual/physical memory installed less the amount allocated to onboard video. Thus, 256MB minus 64MB equals 192MB.

To increase this, you would need to install additional memory. If you'd like to know what this would cost, visit www.crucial.com and use their Memory Advisor™ Tool; you need to know the make and model of your computer to get the info.

And, more memory would make a noticeable difference in performance. Again, crucial.com will tell you how much memory your computer can accomodate and what upgrade options are available; in other words, what memory modules (128MB, 256MB, etc.) you could install in your computer.

Now, I imagine you'd rather not spend any money on upgrades. So, I'd bet there are some things that could be done to improve your computer's performance without buying any addtional hardware. One thing to look at is how many processes are running in your system under normal circumstances. If you hit Ctrl/Alt/Del and open Task Manager, how many processes are running? How many icons do you have in the Notification Area, the lower right corner of your screen, just left of the time display? Those are all running in the background and using part of your system resources. Getting rid of unnecessary processes can improve performance.

How large is your hard drive, and how much free space do you have? To find out, click on My Computer. What does it show for Total Size and Free Space for drive C?

Good suggestion. I belong to the Licking County (Ohio) Comuter Society. They have a semi-annual computer recylcing drive. And, they do give some used computers, monitors, etc. to individuals.

Dead_Reckon, what's the point of having all those computers? By my count, you have at least a dozen. Do you have keyboards, mice, and monitors for all of them?

most of them do not have cases, they are just motherboards. scrap man, lots of scrap. besides, why throw away what you can use? the 950mhz amd's dont have motherboards, nor do i know if they even work, the 350mhz PII has a motherboard, however it nor the 400mhz PII have a case, heck, three of my 700mhz celerons dont even have motherboards to go with them. im a packrat, always have been, always will be. heck, my two 210w floor standing foster speakers where trash when i found em.. still look like they should be in the trash, well, the cases do, and the tweeters dont work, but the subs are really really good. cases just needed a bit of redneck REPAIRING (window tar, and floorboard trim nails), the bass tube in one of them is held in with window sealing tar even. i have a 15" NEC monitor that i pulled offa the curb that works great, bit small, ugly, and rough around the edges, but it works. oh, the 900mhz duron's board is screwed also. you see, a lot of my motherboards and such do not even have a case, monitor, keyboard, or anything to go with them. there just spare parts. stuff i have collected over the years. heck, i have two perfectly working 1986 NES's that i pulled from the curb also, along with a SNES. i am a packrat and a scavenger, if its good, i take it. tis true what they say, one MANS trash is another mans treasure. (belive it or not, i hauled both of the three foot tall foster speakers home on my bike)

oh, and, yes, this was created as a poll.. i wouldnt "give" something away EITHER.. NOTHING goes with out a equal price being paid to me. pretty sweet actually, my neighbor had me fix up like two old computers, and she's payin me like fifty bucks for em.

Well, that does PROHIBIT you from viewing some sites then. For example, if you want to view video on cbsnews.com, you have two options, as shown below:

Windows users already have some version of WMP.
It does limit me, but I just don't LIKE loading either.
I actually have WMP11 because I though it might work a bit better than WMP10, but I don't think it does.
It's just that RealPlayer takes an age to load, and I don't like how WMP11 looks and feels.
The alternative can load clips in web pages anyway, if I need to.I know that If you happen to be in the UK, the BBC site tends to use RealPlayer but the BBC have had a special version made that REMOVES some of the rubbish.

Real Alternative does work but it throws up problems with streamed content (or at least the version I had did).I visited the BBC site and clicked a link to view video. A screen opened prompting me to choose between WMP and RealPlayer, same as cbsnews.com. Not sure why anyone would need to see a BBC feed but that's just me...Quote

Solve : UPDATED: VCR PC?

Answer»

i just installed the power supply into the VCR, and it is running fine. no more clutter around or ontop of the VCR. too bad there is no room for an optical drive.

this is the power supply i choose after i gutted it out of its casing:

[link]http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g139/Dead-Reckon/vcrpc018.jpg[/link]

this is the power supply mounted in the VCR:

[link]http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g139/Dead-Reckon/vcrpc020.jpg[/link]

i mounted the fan to the RAILING. works well. although i am going to put a beefier fan on it so it will run cooler. wont be loud at all either. other than the coffee grinder hard drive.. i also plan to drill some VENTS in the lid for the power supply. so it wont get quite as toasty.. hopefully i can just get a very handy holesaw for my dads drill and cut a hole in it, then mount the fan to the lid, but if i did that i would need about a six inch cord on the fan or so, so i can lift the lid and unplug it.

Here is a pic of the VCR together, with no clutter other than the random CRAP laying around the work table:

[link]http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g139/Dead-Reckon/vcrpc023.jpg[/link]

now, if your WONDERING why i built this, its simply because i can. something fun to do. i mean, there was a dead VCR in my closet collecting dust, and a board and CPU waiting to be put to use, the VCR couldnt live again as a VCR, so i decided to make it live as a PC. works great as one too, considering what hardware is in it. cant wait to get an exhaust fan mounted in it and all.

UPDATE: power supply fan JAMMED on the heatsink of the power supply, didnt notice, its been running like that for about five minutes, hopefully its fine and once it cools down all will be good, it didnt reach its shut down temp, which is good.Looks great, nice work there. The title is confusing ...is this an updated PC or an updated VCR ? ?

lol

Very neat

MiniMac, thats it
i meant its an updated article, thanks for the feedback people, i plan to have the power switch working whenever i can get another soldering iron.

havnt been on for a few days because i have been setting up an old computer for something to pass time (about to go out of my mind sitting in my room with little or nothing to do). i put an HP CUW-AM v2.0 motherboard in an T1150 eMachines case. has a 350w power supply in it that i had as a spare. the eMachine was dead when i got it, motherboard rarely recognizes drives, sometimes it wont even recognize the CPU (the stock CPU is dead, was a 1.3ghz celeron). now its running a 766mhz celery outta the VCR because i had no clue where my other celery's are.. just found them today, it also has 384mb's of SDRAM. there is nothing stock in the emachine other than the floppy drive. i modded another CD drive to fit the cover offa the dead 32x cd-rw drive in the emachine, suprisingly, the hp mobo has a front USB header (only one, so only one port) that is identical to the Emachines plug.. front audio is proprietary though.. but the lights and buttons work, along with one front USB port, so im happy with it. decent little case for what it is.

Solve : Problem sending sms from computer to phone...?

Answer»

Not exactly a problem per se, but a difficulty, and since I am but a padawan in all things computer, I figured I should ask for help.

Here's my situation: I have setup on my computer several DIFFERENT scripts that activate when CERTAIN things happen, i.e. when I get a new e-mail from a particular person, I have a script that sends me a text message on my phone via e-mail. I have multiple others that do various things but the unifying principal is that they send me a text message on my phone via email.

The e-mail I send it to is [emailprotected] Now when I send myself a SMS via e-mail, my phone will display a 10 digit NUMBER as who it was sent from. My problem is that everytime I send a SMS via e-mail that number changes. Now I know that in some way that is how the SYSTEM is identifying my computer, because if I send a SMS to that 10 digit number, it will show up in my inbox.

Anywhoosles, what I am TRYING to do is to get that 10 digit number to stay the same everytime I send a SMS through e-mail. I appreciate any help I receive, and many thanks just for having a site like this out there.

Oh goodness! Even a tech student at my school (now that we only have one tech student since I decided to take Piano and people started switching classes) COULD find that.

"Start with the basics, then move on"ahahahahhahaahahhahaa.

Somehow I'm not too SURPRISED at that.

Solve : Memory for Laptop SDRAM 256MB?

Answer»

I just want to upgrade my Laptop memory from 128MB to 256MB o 512MB, is it compatible or is it work properly to my Laptop? SDRAM PC100 to.What kind of laptop?Im USING IBM Laptop.Upgrading the memory to 256MB or 512MB should be possible assume you have the available memory slots in the laptop or that size of memory is available for your laptop. However, I can't say with certainty what speed or type of memory would be USED in that laptop since I'm not sure which IBM laptop you're using.

You may want to try a memory upgrade site such as the one listed below that LISTS memory specifications for many of the IBM laptops.

http://www.memorystock.com/IBM_laptop-memory.htmAnother good source, with an online Memory Advisor™ TOOL: http://www.crucial.com/im planning also to upgarde the storage files of my Laptop, from 10G hard disk to 20G or 40G is ok for Pentium3 450Mhz? what site you can suggest? IBM Laptop. If you live in the U.S., I recommend Newegg.com. See Notebook / Laptop Hard Drives

Not only "SPAM"....but I think his/her translator is broken. Who needs a translator when you're making thousands of dollars with Adsense?!

Solve : Question on Nortons Antivirus?

Answer»

I had just renewed my Nortons on my LapTop..My Nortons antivirus for my desktop is due to be renewed in 30 days..My question is Do I have to purchase a seperate suscribtion for the desktop? Or can I use my laptop suscribtion..If I can use my Laptops Please tell me how to do it...Thanks so much..........If you own both , you should not have to pay again, no.

(maybe I jumped the gun last night) * I have ANOTHER full PACKAGE product that does like 15 things. I have it on another PC i own + put it on my sons. I had no problems. Norton could be different.....

I had it on my puter at work before I knew of hope.com and for the life of me could not get it off . I HAT_ (strongly dislike norton & MCAFEE).
Though I thought I just read Norton got voted 1# anti-virus of the year award somewhere I also use AVG as a backup. CCleaner is great too!I disagree. I BELIEVE you'll need to pay the separate renewal fee for your desktop. The reason is simple. Your software license for each installation of Norton is for one computer, right? In other words, if you were going out to buy Norton for two computers, you would have to buy two editions of it, one for each computer. Likewise, separate renewal fees apply to each.If you are ready for an alternative :

DLoad the tool below...

Norton Removal Tool

1) Use Add Remove Programs first and un-install Norton...
2) From Windows Explorer search for any folders named Norton and Symantec and delete them...
3) DLoad and install ERUNT and have it make a backup of your registry...
4) Open regedit and type Norton in the search bar. Delete all entries it finds. F3 takes you to the next instance of Norton. Continue til you have reached the end of the registry...
5) Repeat the above process using Symantec instead in the search field. Delete any Symantec keys it finds...
6) Now run the Norton Removal tool you DLoaded...
7) Empty the recycle bin...
Go to My Computer and right clik the C: drive and select Properties and run disk CLEANUP...
9) Re-boot and run disk defrag....

There you're done !

See how easy Symantec makes it for you to dump their product ? ?

patio. 8-)

I would suggest either AVG or AVAST...both excellent...both free.I agree with patio. Norton has gone downhill for some time and I've seen it make more problems than work right. If you are happy with it then renew, but I'd seriously give consideration to AVG, which I've used for several years without a hitch, or !Avast. Both good and both free. Might also consider Antivir.

Alan <>< Yep, I agree with patio and ale52 on the idea and dumping Norton and going with AVG or Avast. With your subscription soon expiring, now is the time to do it.And being free either of the 2 alternatives suggested can be installed on every machine you have...If you already purchased your norton subscription, and dont want to take the alternative of a better free scanner:

You can use the subscription for both computers. You just need to manually enter the code.

I dont remember how you do this anymore, so just try looking through some of the options to see if you can find it^ thats what I did, just entered the codes/ passwords off the cd case on each puter, I had no problems with them accepting at that time. We'll see what happens when I have to renew in June.
