Solve : Wife's manual orders appearing on my PC?

Answer»

My wife still places her mail orders by posting the PAPER order form from the catalogues - she has no access to the internet an is a 100% technophobe.

Recently I have TWICE RECEIVED e-mails from Yodel about delivery of items that she has ordered. I have never made a PURCHASE from the company and wonder how Yodel got my e-mail address - do they have a link between postal and e-mail addresses? There have been previous incidents reported that Yodel has been the subject of a Spam/Fake email campaign
Such emails are very convincing as they contain your name and an address and/or postcode
They are fraudulent, not from Yodel and some have the ABILITY to install malware onto your device if links are clicked.
Seems to me just a coincidence your wife has postal contact, and the two are unrelated, just DELETE!!

Solve : IMAP and POP?

Answer» RUNNING Outlook 365 POP accounts on Windows 10
Running apple mail IMAP on iOS on iphone

When email arrives in the POP account (Outlook 365 W10 PC) it appears as not read which is fine, operator opens, reads, PRINTS it out, MOVES to sales persons basket for office review
When email arrives in the IMAP account (iphone iOS) the email appears as being read which is not fine as the sales person can miss the email or rather the sale. The sales person manages their own account, removing emails that are not necessery and archiving others via their iphone IMAP account.

How do I setup the POP account to not reflect on the IMAP account that an email has arrived? Or is that even possible?
Only thing I can think of is to change the iphone to POP as well and tell them to manage the email account with a different IMAP device, but they want to do this from their iphone IMAP account, ugh...Run everything on imap it is a better mail protocol than pop as it keeps a full history on mail conversations across all devices.
Maybe the only way to do that would to set up the account as POP on the iphone as well, which I read is possible. Then Outlook would still mark the e-mail as 'read' on the e-mail server (because it downloaded) but the same e-mail might show as ''not read' when downloaded to a POP account on the iphone (because it hasn't been opened on that).

Might a solution be to put the Outlook account to IMAP and then, whoever opens the mail FIRST marks it as 'important' so that the second person reading the e-mail KNOWS it has been read but also doesn't miss it?

Solve : Early Black Friday Deals?

Answer»

Hello there,

I want to buy a VPN for streaming and gaming. I have shortlisted these VPNs. What's your opinion about these:
- Pure VPN 86% off on 10 devices for 5 years.
- Nord VPN 68% off for 2 years.
- Express VPN 35% off for 1 year only.

TIADoes PureVPN work on routers? Does anyone have any experience? I am with Nord signed a two year deal to get the best PRICE. Black Friday deals with Nord are a bit of a con as they offer the same massive discount all year round. VPNs as a form of security or privacy protection are a joke. Leave this purevpn, surfhshark, express or whatever top-notch VPN. If VPN is not a form of security then Cisco, Google, Norton, Facebook, avast, and many other security flag shipped companies wouldn't have VPN as a product.

I asked for advice/opinion about the VPNs. Don't remember, if I asked for blaming or negative criticism. If you don't know anything or don't have any value to add here then do yourself a favor and don't reply here.@Nick001,
Did you happen to notice BC_Programmer has been a member of this forum for over 13 years, has over 20,000 posts, and has been personally thanked 1,126 times?
He has offered sage advice, but then again, companies are free to offer goods and services with no real value and consumers are free to purchase said products.VPN's are not a form of security; They are a way of remotely accessing a remote network. For example I connect to my work through a VPN which allows me to access intranet sites and servers as if my PC was connected to that network. There are many legitimate vendors who offer this sort of VPN product. This is what Cisco's product is.

That companies provide VPN services as a product unto themselves, and effectively allow you to use their network as your remote gateway is not evidence that doing so provides added security benefits. It is often only evidence that they can make money doing so. Google and Facebook in particular have a lot to gain from having people route all their internet traffic through servers that are under their control.

There are "companies" that offer car crash protection services which comprise of them gluing crystals to your steering wheel. That does not make it a legitimate protection mechanism and doesn't mean they aren't going to turn your airbag into a fragmentation grenade.

many VPN services make quite grandiose claims; That they provide added security, ensure your privacy, protect you from malware, and so on. None of these are true.

Here is a great write up that pretty much reflects my perspective on VPN Services. The "Remote proxy" approach has legitimate use cases but their benefits have been snake-oiled quite successfully by innumerable VPN Service providers.

My main point though was that people join forums like this for problems like their system being unable to start, they are having drive problems, maybe they can't find a program to do something specific. The idea that somebody would join a computer help forum because they need help basically choosing from one of these great deals is fantastic and just makes me read the post like it's a Robert Ray "Price is Right" prize reveal.I'm afraid this old fart --- me --- is getting confused.

I thought NortonLifeLock was a company with a good reputation in this business of Net security and this is what they have to offer on this topic:

How secure is a VPN? What makes a safe VPN?

The 9th paragraph down that page the link above takes you to and under the heading of "What factors create a safe VPN? I see a sentence that makes a very good point:

Quote
Simply put, choosing the right VPN for you might mean paying for one, if you value your online privacy.

And I state that I am confused because I didn't think that there was a "joke" about the use of a VPN when one is trying to upgrade their security, but the point the NortonLifeLock folks make about the correlation between security and money a person is willing to spend on that security is a valid point, don't you think?

Well, I guess you don't, do you?

You stated in your most recent post in this thread that none of the claims made by companies about added security or added privacy when using a VPN is true. Maybe I better add that here in a quote format:

Quote
many VPN services make quite grandiose claims; That they provide added security, ensure your privacy, protect you from malware, and so on. None of these are true.

Yep, this old fart --- me --- is mighty confused.

Norton offers a paid for VPN. Using then as a source for accurate information about how necessary a VPN is is like reading an article about Starfrit about how important an Apple Peeler is. It's going to be a biased source.

Point is, they sell a paid for VPN. They aren't going to write copy that basically goes "yeah you don't need it". the copy is going to do it's best to sell their product.

A VPN has ONE purpose- allow a system to connect securely over the internet and appear as part of a local area network. VPN = Virtual Private Network.

VPN Services misuse this technology in order to sell a product for a purpose to which I argue it is ill-suited.

1. Security

As stated, many VPN services will claim that using a VPN Service will make the customer's system more secure. But there is no real basis for that argument. The best argument for security on a home system would be that the VPN tunnel is typically ENCRYPTED up to the remote gateway (the VPN Server). But that doesn't actually improve your security- it just means trusting their ISP instead of yours. Alternatively, a real case could be made for say using a public wifi network, but I'd argue the real solution to making that more secure is to not using them in the FIRST place. After all, VPN or not, your system is still connected to the open, untrusted network.

2. Privacy

Aside from the considerations at the end of my previous paragraph, VPNs don't help much for privacy. The usual angle that VPN providers argue is that they "mask" or "cloak" your IP address. That is true. But your IP address is not private information. Websites can and do still identify you via their typical browser fingerprinting, making that whole "privacy" argument moot, since they can still track your browsing using the fingerprint. VPN providers , curiously, don't really mention this rather important piece of information. Though they will often harp on about cloaking and hiding your IP address or how you can have an "IP Address leak". Sometimes the IP Address copy goes into it being somehow beneficial for security as well.

3. Malware

A compromised website isn't suddenly unable to exploit a browser flaw to perform a drive-by download because your VPN Provider worked tirelessly to prevent "IP leaks" or because you have their super "safeguard Deluxe Shields" plugin or whatever. it doesn't prevent the system from being compromised through trojan horse malware. It doesn't even prevent software from finding your "real" IP Address in that case either, since all it has to do is ENUMERATE all the network adapters.

Whether the benefits are non-existent or negligible except in CERTAIN specific instances, they are advertised as 'general purpose" things that everybody (apparently) is supposed to have to "remain secure". But the fact of the matter is that a system will see a manyfold increase in Security, Privacy, and malware prevention beyond what any VPN provider could ever provide by simply disabling Javascript in the browser.

It is true that some companies people consider reputable are running VPN providers. But personally I feel that is like if an otherwise legitimate corporation started to send 419 scam E-mails. It doesn't legitimize the scam, it just damages their reputation for being involved.

It's not difficult to start a VPN Provider. It's almost a money-making scheme. Pay for a VPS, install the open source Open VPS software... Boom, you've got a VPN service. Now sell access to it and you are a VPN provider. Maybe choose some animal name. Like- ElephantVPN or TunnelRhino or KoalaNet or some other random crap. Now promise everybody you don't keep logs, that you are private and secure, pay for advertisements and sponsor some random youtubers to metaphorically suck you off to their audience and watch the money roll in. And when it is inevitably discovered that you keep logs or harvest private information, just shut down your first LLC, fire up a new one, and start over. Heck you could even just sponsor the same youtubers and they just see the cheque and don't care where it comes from. "Due to the massive security issues I dropped ElephantVPN. Now, I am sponsored by a completely different company with the same address, ModernHairlessWoollyMammothVPN. use my youtube channel name as an Affiliate code "BungholeDancer", to save 10% on your first subscription!"

Though, saying I'm belittling them seems like an admission they are a spammer.

I'm still pretty sure they are a spammer.

I could believe that they honestly asked this question on another forum. Many users will have inquiries and cast a wider net.

Though, I wonder if this is the same user. Since then they would have experience with PureVPN, no? So why ask?

Solve : Hard Drive Crash - Dont be so quick to destroy the drive - Power Supply Issue?

Answer»

Just figured I'd share this as I had a system that had crashed and it acted like the hard drive died. I grabbed a 400 GB SATA drive from a stack of used DRIVES that i have that should be healthy and began building Windows 10 to that 400GB drive to which part way through I started getting the clunk of death and I assumed that the 400 GB drive wasnt healthy from the stack of available used drives. So I installed another drive into the system this TIME a 320 GB drive and started to install Windows 10 to that to which point I took the 2 drives that I believed were bad and stuck them into a vice and hit them with a small sledgehammer shattering the aluminum HDD body and warping the platters and put them into the metal recycle bucket. Came back to the computer and the 320 GB was boot looping to Windows 10 and crash.

Checked the voltages and the 5VDC was healthy but the 12VDC was 10.2 Volts. I was surprised the main board was functioning properly with the fact that the CPU has the 4-pin 12VDC molex connection and the 12 volts is saved between CPU and all other 12 VOLT components.

So Lesson LEARNED.... Don't be so fast to destroy a drive that you FEEL is bad until your sure that the problem was really caused by a bad hard drive and not a power supply!

Solve : Store Left the RetailAdmin on Open Box Item?

Answer»

I bought an Open Box HP ENVY All in One computer a couple of weeks ago. I was able to do a few things on it, but Best Buy left the RetailAdmin login on there and I was prevented from changing any settings.

I went back to the store to find out how to remove the RetailAdmin and set me up as the Systems Administrator, but they said that I needed to bring the computer back in. I can't do that because it weighs 44 lbs and I had to hire someone to carry it up to my apartment.

I ASKED if I installed a clean update to Windows 10 Pro, would that solve the problem and they said 'maybe.' I bought the Windows 10 Pro software, only to discover that I couldn't install it without the RetailAdmin password nor even GET past the Windows login screen.

Is there any way to reformat the hard drive and start from scratch? Install Windows 10 Pro and make myself the Systems Admin? They should send a Geek Squad member to your house free of charge...I side with Patio on this one. They should send someone to your home with the system recovery media and build it up fresh and clean as if it should have been when purchased.

I had an issue happen at Staples years ago where I was looking for a deal on a new computer and they had a $999 desktop computer for $719.99 which was an open box. I bought it right away and when i got it home it was a new computer that someone bought and used long enough to already have their own data and music on it as well as Turbo Tax sensitive info. Fortunately back then the HP Computers were shipped with the System Recovery media that was tucked into a lid at the top of the computer. I wiped the 80 GB HDD clean and built it up fresh from the system recovery media. To think what if that computer was sold to someone who was shady, they would have had the prior customers sensitive Tax Return Data with social security numbers and more.

Soon after owning that computer though I realized why they returned it. It came with a game installed on it that didnt work. And the issue was that the Intel Integrated Graphics wasnt powerful enough to PLAY the game, and when I opened it up to add a video card, the motherboard had a location where a video card could have been installed if HP decided to actually populate the motherboard with an AGP SLOT. So I ended up having to sell this computer shortly after buying it myself for $450 to someone who wasnt a gamer who saw getting a $999 computer half price was a great deal and I then was much more careful in checking to making sure that the next computer I bought had a AGP slot to take a video card INSTALLATION since I like to play video games.

Solve : Can't bypass password request in process to fix laptop computer?

Answer»

Hi! I recently bought a used Dell Inspiron E5400 laptop computer in Ebay. It had Windows 7 OS, but I wanted to install Windows 10 pro with an installation disk and have successfully used on other computers. I wasn't able to get the F keys to work well. So I decided to create a partition instead before running the installation media (on DVD). The installation process started ok. But then, we had to leave home in a rush, and I thought it's be ok to leave it at home, and that maybe it'd finish the process. But it was a huge mistake to have done so! Now, all I see, no matter what F keys I push - is a WHITE page, with words telling me I must type in a password in order to do anything else. I can't get the installation disk to run, nor any disks I put into the laptop. So since I didn't change boot order before I started the process, there's no way I know of to force the computer to allow the installation disk to run. Can you think of anything I could try that might help fix this problem? Thanks!

I also forgot to say, but I also tried the method of first removing the hard disk from it, before trying to run any kind of fixing media I had downloaded to DVDs to try out. I wasn't able to get it to fit back in after having taken it out. I can try some more - but so far, it doesn't fit in there as well as originally. I'll also mention I still got the same error message without the hard drive in as when it had been in the computer. Puzzling! I'd thought it would help enable me to be able to run fixing media on the computer. But I guess not!Since it didn't prompt for it previously, it doesn't seem like it is a STANDARD power-on password. From what you've described it sounds like the system had a supervisor password set.

It sounds like the system has a supervisor password set and also probably has some sort of anti-tampering check, which was somehow tripped through the installation process. Normally you don't need to put in the supervisor password to use the machine, but if the BIOS detects certain types (or number) of changes it will lock the system down and require you to enter the setup utility, with the supervisor password, confirm and save the changes as being "authorized". Note that this supervisor password would have been required if you tried to enter the CMOS setup utility to change the boot order; so this doesn't seem to be anything you caused to happen, but would have run into either way.

I had this issue with a old Thinkpad machine. It had no HDD, but would happily boot to the DVD Drive. as soon as I changed the system (In my case, I added a Hard disk) It now required me to enter setup and save, but that required a supervisor password I did not have, so it became IMPOSSIBLE to even try to boot at all!

In the case of my Thinkpad, I had to disassemble the laptop and then short out the security chip in a specific way while turning it on to clear the supervisor password. It looks like you may be in luck for a Dell system, as Dell gives them generated master passwords.

The message you see should be something like "This computer system, is protected by a password authentication system...". If you plug in that serial number into bios-pw.org, you can find out the generated master password Dell would have on that system and try that.Hi! I am unable to get past the password request, which is on a white screen. It happened after I RUSHED off in the middle of installing Windows 10, through using a Windows 10 Pro installation disk I bought (and have successfully used on other computers before). Now, no matter what key or key combination I press, I still get that same page. It won't let me tell the computer to do anything, since it complains that I haven't typed in the password. Though the company I bought it from through Ebay, said it has no password, and to just hit the "Enter" button. This computer is a Dell Latitude laptop computer, E5400. Pressing any of the Fkeys is useless, as no matter what key I press, I get that same white screen with that same error message. And it won't obey me when I press the "enter" button after seeing that message, either.

I removed the hard drive later, in hopes it would enable the DVD installation disk to run successfully. But I still got that same error message on the same white page. So then I put the hard drive back in, but it's not yet put in right, as I had a hard time fitting it back in there without it jutting out beyond the edge of the computer. I can try some more later though.Didn't you already post about this problem here?

Solve : uploading to a flash drive?

Answer»

I'm planning on buying a new laptop soon. On my current laptop i have games that i've downloaded from different sites, and a couple have been discontinued or retired so i can't download them any more. What my question is, is how do i upload said games to a flash drive so i can put them on the new laptop? Is that even how i would go about it? I'm not terribly computer literate, but i can follow instructions. I hope i've used the correct terminology, i don't want to sound ignorant. Games are very tricky with migration between systems. If the game is a stand alone game as in it doesnt have integration with the systems registry its an easy migration of those games to another computer. If the game had an installer and was installed and its integrated now to the registry of the old system and you dont have the original installation media, then those games are usually TRAPPED onto the old system with no easy ability to migrate them.

My suggestion is that you might want to keep the old laptop around for PLAYING the old games that are unable to be downloaded and use it as a legacy gaming laptop.

You could locate the games installation folder and copy/paste that data to a large enough USB stick, External Hard Drive, or upload up to 15GB free to Google Cloud storage if you have a gmail account to log onto. Then copy or download that data to the new computer and try to run the executable associated with those games. If the game RUNS then you got lucky and it doesnt have registry hooks that are required to operate. If it gives an error upon trying to make it run its most likely that its missing sections in registry that permit it to operate on a system. Thanks for the suggestion of keeping this laptop for gaming. I never thought of that, and all of my games work fine on this, whereas using it for other things is ONE of the reasons i want to get a new one. And won't that help the new laptop to run better, not having all my games on it? I appreciate your help.

Solve : I need a CD Burner, but....?

I have a Dell Optiplex 780. It is used and I haven't had it long. I was going to burn a CD but WINDOWS media player said I have to plug in a CD burner! I know NOTHING AT ALL about computers so please don't talk techy to me. I saw on ebay that there are external CD burners (as I would have no idea how to install an internal one)! However, I'm not SURE exactly what I need to be looking for in choosing one...all I want to do is burn music to a CD-R. So can someone help me out here? Thanks so much ahead of time!
breadcrumbFirst check on the cd drive you have in the Dell that it has DVD+/-RW which means it is a CD writer/Dvd writer. If it has DVD-ROM then it is only a reader so can't write disks.

If it is a DVD+/-RW then check windows can see the drive in windows explorer. You may need to eject the disk tray and re inset before the drive SHOWS. If the drive is showing then it should work in Windows Media player.

If you just want to get another drive then something like this https://www.amazon.com/External-CD-DVD-Drive-Compatible/dp/B07MJW5BXZ

The Dell OptiPlex 780 has four different models, and how easy it will be to DEAL with the problem will depend on the model.

Solve : Google Account hacked - Please help!?

Answer»

Hello,

Today I received an email stating that my GOOGLE password had been CHANGED. I subsequently went to log in and was unable to do so.

I tried to recover my account but the only steps available to me were:

1. Enter 8-digit backup code (I don't ever remember setting this up).
2. Get a verification code at ********29 (I didn't RECOGNISE the last digits - so it's not my telephone number)
3. Alternative email (but the alternative email is the same email as the one that was hacked and the one I'm TRYING to sign into, so this is completely useless!).

When I click on "try another way", I get a "Google couldn’t verify this account belongs to you." message and that's it.

I tried calling Google but just got an automated "go online" ... "thanks for your call!" message from a man trying to be all uplifting and SEXY

Is there any way I can get my account back?

Just a few days ago; the very first window opens in the size of a child's building block (and every other window opens bigger but still not to full screen).
Making a window full screen MANUALLY gets to be a pain over time; does anyone have a permanent solution?

Why oh why is it so much simpler to share between an android PHONE and windows using a file MANAGER than two windows pcs?
They DROP connection, decide not authorized; in fact ANYTHING they can think of to hinder copying/sharing of files. This is with win10 pro (mostly). One day it works, next day not. Updates?
I'm not necessarily expecting a solution, just want to share my pain.
If I could I'd go all Android.

They have all been exposed to the public, yes, but why the Yahoo account?

It COULD be that more spambots are customized to work for Yahoo, and not Hotmail or Gmail.
Gmail I can understand, but both Yahoo and Hotmail are at the top of the list for email accounts...

Solve : To turn off or not to turn off...?

Answer»

I RECENTLY heard or read that it's better to leave your computer running rather that doing a shutdown when it's not in use.
Anyone know if this has any merrit, and if so why?Ah, the age-old question .... Turn it off, at least OVERNIGHT, and save the energy. It'll be obsolete long before any stress to metals from heating and cooling causes component failure.

And, don't forget about power saving options such as Standby for the computer and setting the monitor to go into low-power mode after a CERTAIN time of no activity.I agree with Soybean, either turn it off or put it on standby to save some power if it's not in use. Plus if you go for extended periods of time without restarting your computer it could cause problems. (I work in the IT department at my office and I can't tell you how MANY people come to me with "problems" and all I've had to do is RESTART their computer and it works fine again) but these people never shut down their computers, many never even log off. So save some energy and either shut it off or put it on standby.I heard on a tech show that if you're not going to be using your system for three hours or more you should turn it off. It seems like a good idea to me and that's usually what I do. (Plus turning it off every night like you suggest.)

Solve : Skeletons Censored From Chinese Version of 'World of Warcraft'?

Answer»

BEIJING —
Bones and skeletons have disappeared from the Chinese version of the popular online fantasy game, World of Warcraft, sparking fierce criticism from the nation's army of players, Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday.

Chinese mainland gamers have waited half a year longer than their U.S. counterparts for the upgraded version of WoW, only to find the appearances of familiar skeletons have been fleshed out.

The skeletons, regular characters, grow flesh in the new version and the bones symbolizing dead characters have been changed to graves.

A member of staff with the public relations department of The9, which runs WoW in China, was QUOTED by a Guangzhou-based newspaper as saying the changes were made according to "China's particular situation and relevant regulations."

"It's to promote a healthy and harmonious online environment ," the anonymous staff member said.

However, Zhao Yurun, public relations director of The9, told Xinhua the changes were made as part of an "operational strategy."
Some gamers thought the changes made the game dull and voiced their scorn on the official WoW Web site, filling more than 10 pages with criticism.

More than 500 gamers signed a post, announcing they would BOYCOTT the game. "Why should we accept the so-called 'good appearance' without the opportunity of being consulted?" Xinhua quoted player "Cai Xu" as saying.

"We don't need such harmony ," WROTE "Xue Linglong."

The monster-killing game, first launched by California-based Blizzard Entertainment in 2004, is one of the most popular online role-playing games involving multiple players.

China has urged Internet companies to clean up Web sites and offer only legal and "healthy" content. In April, China announced a new campaign against Internet pornography that would also take aim at fraud, illegal LOTTERIES and "rumor-spreading" to protect the country's mainly young Internet users from "negative online influences."

From what I've heard so far, the China Government wants something to cover up the skeletons and stuff or they will ban the game.Quote from: Carbon Dudeoxide on July 12, 2007, 04:41:35 AM

Solve : Email Attachment?

Answer»

I got an email from one of my friends. Theres no text in the message, only an attachment to a text file (.txt)
NEXT to the link to download that file it has the size of the file and it is 0.0kb.
Over MSN he told me to open the it and read what it says because theres something to do with mars or something.

Just wondering if you could attach a virus to a file and still make it read as 0.0 kb in size.
I'm having second thoughts with downloading this file.Yes that can be done...
No i would not open it.
Did you scan it ? ?To scan it I have to risk downloading it. I think i'll just stay away from the message. . .

Why attach a text file when you can just type it in the message...too true, chap. too true.
did it seem suspicious when he told you to open it?

''open it man, open it! seriously it's an awesome present man!''Yeah he was something LIKE that. I told him to just tell me what it was but then he went offline.
see i'd never do that to you.

LINK <<<--- ''it's not a virus man, honest!'' It took me a moment to think weather or not I should click that link. I looked at the address to make sure nothing was bad about it. All because you SAID
Quote

it's not a virus man, honest!

Should of just said, "CHECK this picture out" or something lol no, because ''check this picture out'' isn't as OBVIOUS as what i said
the point is to be obvious, that way people think you're joking, when in fact, they actually clicked on an email attachment to a virus because you ''jokingly'' said ''have a virus man, for old time's sake''...I dunno what you said.....but no one ever does How good/close of a friend is this? Not so close. I've actually forgotten that email until now. Thanks a lot Chris Let me call a few buddies over at FBI and we'll get that taken out of your memory for you...Again I forgot about it until now. Maybe just stop talking and it will go away again....

Solve : Help plsssssssssss.........?

Answer»

If our IP has been banned by a particular WEBSITE, is there anychance to reenter that website using the same computer/internet service

No
Two reasons:

1) You have a good chance of GETTING banned VIA ISP side. Meaning that they will contact your ISP if you continue to cause problems. Your ISP may either a) discontinue your services b) prevent you from any access to that site

2) Anyone who has been banned obviously did something that is undesirable to let back into a website.
In our own moral, we cant really even begin to suggest such a thing. Thanks for the mail

I am sure I have been banned from a forum with out any valid REASON and I never used any thing abusive or illegal and I am sure there is any moral element involved.

anyway thanks for your replyI expect you were banned for the VERY ANNOYING habit of using stupid topic HEADINGS such as "help plssssssssssssssssss..........." which make some people very angry.

The best thing you can do is this:

Email the webmaster.
Find a contact email on the main site, or try the following email address:

[emailprotected]
(replace thesitehere.com with the website you were visiting)
Many webmasters make sure that there is a regular webmaster email available.

Solve : recover data from harddisk?

Answer»

Anyone can HELP me to recover data from hard disk.
My friend's computer had serious problem & he lost allmost all the thing.
He now buy new motherboard,RAM & harddisk.
Now the problem is that how can he recover data from old hard disk.As the HDD is can't open OS & also it can;t open as secondary HDD.

We use one of the recover software but we can't recove.

Now you can help him.Pls...

Thanks in advance.Assuming the hard drive was properly installed as a secondary HDD when that was tried, the only option is probably using a commercial data recovery service. For example, see http://www.datarecovery.net/hard-drive-data-recovery.html

For more, Google on data recovery services. Be aware that using such a service is probably going to be expensive.I use Recuva myself.
It works perfectly for data who isn't overwritten.
Let me know if it worked

Jonas What kind of problem caused the data loss?

If it was a physical disk problem, your CHANCES of recovery are not all that great. You will be able to recover some portions of data, but definitely not all.

Recover software will try its best to get your data back, but there is no guarantee.
Some of your data may be cut off, and not completed.
You shouldent use programs that have been recovered. Music, documents, pictures, maybe even save game files should be fine, but some of them may be truncated/cut off

Thanks for a reply.
As I said this is my friend's problem. When he is doing his programmimg suddenly tuen off computer & now can't turn on.All said that it was very old.So this done. ( About 6-7 years old)
The data are useful because he is a programmer & there are documents of his project in it.

I will try your suggetion.

Once thaks. Hope it will useful for him. Perhaps something besides the harddrive is keeping the computer from powering on?

You might want to start a new topic and start troubleshooting it, that WAY, you might get your computer back.

Can you try plugging in the monitor you're USING into the other computer to see if it works?its only 2 or so years old all the conections are in place and the thing to make it briter dosnt help
Okay. Is it possible to take the monitor you're using on this computer (the one you're using now), and plug it into the ailing computer? If you can, please do so. Check to see if the monitor works. If it does, we know the monitor DIED and needs replacing. If not, then we'll try something ELSE.

Solve : Computer turning itself off...?

Answer»

Im new here, and im sorry if this is in the wrong place!

But for quite a while now, 2 months or so id say...
My computer has been working for a few hours, and then just turning itself off.

When this happens, i leave it off for an hour or so, then turn it back on, and it then works for another few hours.

Also, things like PUTTING my webcam on, or viewing videos on youtube, make this problem happen much more quicker. As in, the computer turns off withhin minutes of these activities.

I also cant scan my computer for viruses etc, because it'll get a quarter into the scan, then switch off.

Can anyone give me advice?
Thanksmight be over heating. turn off completely unplug everything, hold power button in for a few seconds to discharge remaining power. then open case and use can of compressed air not a vacum to clean out the case make sure to clean the fans and heatsinks off GOOD. put case back on and plug everything back and see if it works. if not report back.. d oyou get any errors right before it turns off? what windows are you using? Thanks for the quick reply. It does sound like a possibility actually...

A few months ago, i had some problems plugging usbs into the front of my computer tower. They went in sometimes, but stayed loose. And my cousin accidentally kicked out one of the usbs one night, and since then, no usbs will plug into the usb slots.
I remember talking to someone, and mentioning it in general conversation, and he said it might have been the soldering or something that has melted, due to overheating...

Anyways. Ive taken what you've said, on board, and will see about that.
And no i dont get any error messages. I'll just be on the internet or doing whatever, and then WITHOUT warning, switches straight off.
My computer is Windows XP ok let me know if it continuesI had a PC doing exactly that a few years back. Turned out to be the heat was getting to it. The power supply/fan was getting old, and while it still blew some air it wasnt cooling like it should have been. Mine would freeze up every hour, then half hour, then in just a few minutes. I spent $50 on a new power supply and the problem was solved. I wouldnt wait too long; you risk burning up everything. Can i just ask before i do anything...

I wont lose everything on my computer will i?
Like documents, photos, things ive downloaded etc?

ThanksNo, you wont lose anything on your computer except dust and dirt.. I blow mine out every couple of months or so (tool-less entry and side of case clear) because I can see how dirty it gets and it bugs me.. haha, mine also has a fan on the side with some bright red and orange LED lights for looks and to try and suck some dust out.. I think it lets more in then keeps out though.Ok...
Well i didnt loosen anything, or remove anything.
I simply unplugged everything, and wiped all the dust and dirt away from all the holes in the sides. And the fan thing.
They were clogged up loads, on the outside! With dust
So i removed all of that, did the thing where i press in the power button for few seconds.

Then i plugged everything back in, and put the computer back on.
Its been running for well over an hour and a half now.
Maybe even 2hrs!

I keep worrying that the luck is gonna be short lived and any second now it'll all turn off.
But so far so good. Im surprised.

If the problems carry on, ill repost in here.ok we'll be here if something goes wrong. hows it running today? The best thing to use to clean it is probably a can of Blow-Off, its just compressed air and you blow it out a tube and it cleans it.. just dont hold it upside down when you spray, or spray it at yourself or anything like that.. it gets pretty cold though lolQuote from: Markis on July 25, 2007, 01:33:47 PM

I 2nd that.......... that stuff is pretty nifty when it comes to cleaning off dust in hard to reach PLACES..... but i say this a precaution be careful how you use it you don't want to blow the dust onto your motherboard in most towers the motherboard is all ways facing up so they tend not to attract you much dust when its been there for a year or so lol , but when you will be doing this you will be flat down on the floor and your motherboard will be vulnerable to the excess dust your getting clear of .......... same goes for any bit of hardware be carefull where your blowing the dust , of course you don't always have to use this method you can take the large clumps of dust with your hands as long as your protected from static , try and get hold of a Anti-static wrist strap they dont cost much but there always worth the by so you dont mess up a $700 computer ....

Hope this is a little clearer

Solve : Here's a challenge for someone---I need some help.?

Answer»

That brand is a good brand. Some flash drives lie about how much space is actually on them.
Try copying over a few folders at a time.Because it is microsoft outlook BACKUP I am not sure how to move a few files at a time??

It is a 16 GB thumb drive.

I am trying to move 9.5 GB could there be that much difference?

wait... so your trying to move a single file that is 9.5 gb?
To do that, you have to format the flash drive as ntfs. Fat32, which is most likely the default, can only handle file sizes up to 4 gb. For how to format the drive for ntfs, go here: http://www.ntfs.com/quest22.htm
OK

We are trying this.

I will keep you posted.

Excellent ..finally i am feeling optimistic!

Ok ..... seems to be working.............my guy SAYS 17minutes to finish.

That's AWESOME michaewlewis. Man I was starting to think this would never work!

OK ....I might have understated my needyness earlier........once I have those microsoft outlook files ( on the thumb drive) how do I install those into my microsoft outlook on this computer ( my laptop)? and have them work for all my emailing needs?

There is an import function in Outlook that should do the trick. Go to File -> Import and ExportAnd out of curiosity, which files are you copying? Are you copying the archive file, or another file? It's the archive backup file.

Will EVERYTHING be OK?should be good.
And actually, I gave you the wrong instructions for importing it. You'll need to go to File -> Data File Management and add the *.pst file to the list.Worked perfect.

Even got the outlook to work with your instructions.

The formatting of the thumb drive was bang on. Worked first time after that.

Thank you very much.

I have a much greater appreciation of all your guys skills now than before.

BBglad it worked for you.

Solve : Favored Internet Connection Method?

Answer»

Ok everyone here ovibiously has internet. but wat is your favored type of Internet Connection Method(we'll call it ICM since it is so long to type that)
?

You are pulling my leg if you choose Dial-Up.

DSL(i have this), Cable and Sattelite fast and affordable.

You can vote twice(one for the ICM you have and the second you wish you had)

Sorry Calum i had to edit something with the poll. Well, as of now I have DSL from Verizon. I used to have cable a few years ago from Adelphia, or what is now Comcast. I wish I still had cable as it is much faster than the DSL I have now. Though, Verizon has much more reliable service than Adelphia ever did. The internet would seem to go out randomly daily. At least you didnt choose Dial-Up i have dialup and a 12 year old 56K aztec modem, i chose t3 cause im a speed demonI chose T3 because what I really want is OC768 fiber to the premise.

I have cable, but I think it's overpriced. What connection do I favor? T3. Although T3 would be optimal most users aren't going to be able to get that type of connection at their home, even for a home business. Personally my favorite would be Cable. I've had all of the above mentioned connections (except T3) and overall have been most happy with Cable. Although really like the upload of a T1.

I also added Wi-Fi/WiMAX and Fiber optic to your list. BACK at home, I use Wireless (about 32MBps, signal strength Very Good)
Right Now, Cable.Actually I'd like fibre optic.
I have an 8mbps ADSL connection right now which I'm happy with, but we don't seem to get crazy SPEEDS here in the UK like you can in the US.I have Virginmedia's cable 20 Mbit/sec (down) 768 Kbit/sec (up) and I,m fairly happy with it except for the "traffic management", where if you download 3 GB after 4:30 PM they cut your speed to 25% for 2 hours.
Sounds pretty good, but I dislike the idea of having my speed cut.
At the minute I have no cap, subject to fair use, and haven't been told to use it less yet despite sometimes downloading a very large amount of data, say over 100Gb in a month, for various reasons.
Also it's cheap which is the main reason we have this connection.
Would be nice to be able to get 100mbps like Zylstra does.Virginmedia are trialling a 50 Mbit/sec service with traffic management if you download 10 GB between 4 PM and 9PM. I don't know if I made clear that the traffic management consists of reducing your DL speed to 25% for a maximum period of 5 hours. There is no cap on the amount of data you can download, and if you stay outside the traffic management period, you can download "all you can eat" at top speed.
I see what you mean, it's still a kind of cap but not as restrictive.
Most of the downloads from me are usually between 9 and 5, as that's when I'm at college so I leave them running. After that I'm using my PC so I'm not usually downloading huge amounts of stuff.
Any IDEAS on how much that service will be?DSL is a good internet connection. Quote from: Calum on July 06, 2008, 06:36:39 AM

Solve : Toyota Prius?

Answer»

I'll have to admit that the sometimes twisted illogical actions of Elected Officials give TONS of fodder for the Theorists...
However that happens in any Democracy.
The people that are interested in the new technology are certainly driving the market right now which illustrates one of the brighter sides of how Capitalism ACTUALLY WORKS...people will buy what they want not neccessarily just what's being produced.
It's just a shame more consumers are unaware of this little detail.

BTW according to the latest statistics these are the largest by dollar investors in hydrogen fuel-cell technology in order in the U.S.

1) the Government.

2) The automobile manuf. ( a collective # )

3 The oil companies.

patio.Pretty cool. I mean, our need for oil isn't going to disappear. Even if all our fuel needs were met by other sources, we use more and more plastics, anyway.Actually, there are fuel systems that CAN allow a carb based system like my fathers 1986 Oldsmobile station wagon running a 307 big block olds V8 too get around 80 miles per gallon, the blueprints too do such too a ford pickup in the 80's where sold too Exxon I believe. I don't remember the full story behind it, but, I do know that SOMETIME in the 80's a man converted a ford truck too some sort of crazy fuel system, got 80mpg or so if I remember correctly, I'll do some research and tell what I find.

On another note, the key reason why this country keeps crashing is because of greed. The idiots up in the white house are too busy lining there pockets too care about the rest of us, or the rest of the world for that matter. The oil projects in Africa that you don't hear about would be one good example. Fact is, only 30% of our oil comes from the middle east.Good points, DR!

Yes, unfortunately, Washington, D.C. is the source of many of our woes. I don't expect perfection, and one can't satisfy all the people all the time, but there's too much going on which really does come down to avarice and greed.I couldn't find anything on the truck, I'll ask my father if he can find an article on it. I know that if you build an engine right, you can get decent fuel mileage, Example being again, my fathers 1986 Oldsmobile Custom Cruiser, which, with the onboard computer system for the carb mostly removed, along with various emissions, which backdates the engine too the 1980 model 307, it gets around 20 miles per gallon. Originally it got around 10.

Now, mind you, this is a vehicle that weighs about 4100lbs, and has about 200-400lbs of random stuff loaded in it usually, plus my father, who weighs around 210lbs, this vehicle is also running a Oldsmobile 307 cubic inch 5.0L big block four barrel V8, getting 20 miles per gallon out of that engine is quite good, especially since the engine has had things removed, rather than added too get that millage. The engine came stock with a computerized carburetor, distributor, and a few emission controls with sensors, after removing the emission controls and sensors by using parts from a 1980 model engine somewhat, the car went from a sluggish tank, too a rather efficient and quick utility vehicle. We plan too remove the computerized distributor and the carburetor soon, and replace them with older non-computerized ones, there built too the 1980 factory specs. Entirely legal, since it is technically like dropping an engine four years older than the car in it, here the limit is five years older.

My point is, that, if a cars fuel mileage can be increased by simply removing a smog pump, and a deer antler emission hose system by about 10-12 miles per gallon, what could you get out of completely re-designing the fuel system? I mean, if you re-design a cars coolant or exhaust system, you can often get anywhere from two too four times as much efficiency out of the motor. Now a days you can have the computer reprogrammed in your car and double, triple, or sometimes even quadruple the performance and fuel mileage.

My simple point being, I believe the technology we should focus on is the older technologies that all of our fuel consuming devices are built on, such as the internal combustion engine, it has so much potential without fuel injection, without all these plastic parts and cheap aluminum blocks, what you need is durability and a properly built vehicle, not something that lasts maybe five years then falls apart almost as comically as one would expect a cartoon automobile too do. Honestly, do you think that a Prius would be here three years from now? Five? I highly doubt it. I know my Oldsmobile Cutlass Brougham is mechanically capable of being used for at least another twenty years, simply because parts will almost always be available , or rebuild able.

I mean, sure, the cast iron engine in my car is a bit comical, I'll have too do some modifications too it too get the performance, and fuel mileage I want out of it, but thats worth the work, considering it'll only need minor work for the most part. They gear everything now-a-days too be throw away from the way its built internally, too the way its all assembled under the hood. Which, the entire reason I will never own a automobile with a year model past about 1990 unless I intend too get it cheap enough too junk it when something like the transmission dies. Picked mine up today. Will spend lots of quality time w/o.m. re-learning how to drive. Made it home from dealership w/HUGE smile on my face. The feel of drive-by-wire steering is different from the rack-and-pinion I'm used to, as is the shifter, also DBW. Have lurked on a couple of Prius owner forums/blogs the past few weeks so now I know what they've been talking about. The mid-dash display is a wee bit distracting, what with the continuous flow of info about power and mpg. May cure me of my lead foot, yet! Might have to cover it, though as it IS distracting in rush hour. If you all wish, I can post occasional updates here. The good, the bad, and the ugly. (OK, it is an unattractive car, but it's MY uggy car!) Thanks for your INPUT of earlier, I appreciate the feedback.
Regards,
sv7Yes, please keep us posted on your experiences! Congratulations on the acquisition. I hope things go well!I just ran across these articles about the prius and it's greenliness. An interesting read, at least.

I heard they stopped making Hummers.

The future of the Hummer brand is in doubt. On Tuesday 3 June 2008, one day prior to GM's annual shareholder meeting, CEO Rick Wagoner said the brand is being reviewed, and has the possibility of either being sold, having the production line completely redesigned, or being discontinued.I would like to see the Hummer HX though.

Solve : C: drive?

Answer»

Hi, Forum -

Please excuse if this is a really dumb question, but I have to ask it, being a computer NOVICE. I am using Vista and I update automatically and always delete temp files and BROWSING history etc. (right click on C: - properties - etc.) However, and here is my question, how come that my C: DRIVE seems to be eaten up or rather filled with data slowly but surely? I never download and/or store stuff on my PC. I have an external HARD drive for my photos. So why does the storage capacity of my C: drive keep getting smaller and smaller and smaller although I don't store anything or download anything? I find this very strange!! Any answers for me, which will be greatly appreciated?!!It depend on defining "slowly, but surely".
Get DiskSpaceReporter: http://www.malte-weiss.de/software/DiscSpaceReporter/index.php, and see what's taking space.
Thanks for the reply. I will do as suggested and hopefully find out more with the help of http://www.malte-weiss.de/software/DiscSpaceReporter/index.php. I have found that a lot of the mysterious buildup of data in Vista is from Restore Points and Shadow Copy files. These files are created automatically and can take up many gigabytes of hard drive space. They are good insurance in case of trouble and are worth keeping, so take some time to learn what they are and how to use them. Basically, they are a series of backup copies of your system files, [Restore Points], and your data files, [Shadow Copies]. If you are pressed for space, deleting the older Restore Points and Shadow Copies may be an acceptable compromise. The instructions below will help you some of the files you can live without.

Also, read this article about how to find and use your Shadow Copy data in Vista.
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/recover-files-with-shadow-copies-on-any-version-of-windows-vista/

Disk Cleanup Procedure

Open the Disk Cleanup window: click Start> Control Panel> System & Maintenance> Performance Information and Tools. Then click on ‘Open Disk Cleanup’ in the left-hand column of the Performance Information and Tools window.

When asked to choose which files to clean up, select ‘Files from all users on this computer’. [User Account Control will ask you to confirm the action.] Then choose which drive to clean up [C: drive], and then wait for the Cleanup Wizard to calculate the quantity of excess files it can delete for you.

Vista will show you the Disk Cleanup window with a LIST of file groups that you can choose to delete. This will involve some personal choice on you part, but most of the file groups are small and not worth deleting to gain space. The hibernation files are big, but don’t delete them if you use hibernation. Click on the name of each group to read a detailed description. Check its checkbox to mark it for deletion. Click OK to perform the deletion.

This window has a very important second tab called ‘More Options’ [The ‘More Options’ tab does not appear if you chose to clean up only your own files on the computer.] The ‘More Options’ tab lets you remove unnecessary programs and lets you delete extra restore points and file Shadow Copies, which are like version backup files.

This disk cleanup tool will delete all but the most recent Restore Point and Shadow Copy files. Open Windows Explorer and see how much free space there is on C: drive before and after running Disk Cleanup to see how much space you gain.

All this does not necessarily account for all the space you are losing on your hard drive, but it solves part of the mystery.

Solve : Forums going down tonight @ 9:00PM MST?

Answer»

In the ongoing STRUGGLE to attempt to get the forums running optimal I'm going to be taking the forums down at 9:00PM MST (1 hours) and attempt to perform some additional maintenance and CLEAN up. Sorry for the short notice, just assumed that my LAST fix was going to help THINGS, which it didn't.

Assuming how smoothly it goes I'd imagine they're going to be down for around 1-2 hours.

All right.
1 Hour.
10:00 PM.

Does that mean the forums will be unaccessible? Yeah they'll be in maintenance mode, so will not be able to log in.1 minute from now.

Good Luck!Updates made. Lets see if that helps. It was a Repeat from yesterday

Solve : Still getting group discussions to my email box.?

Answer»

I joined this forum group (not this one) a couple of weeks ago. I started getting
EMAILS for each discussion message given. I went BACK into the settings and
requested that I don't want these emails sent to my email account.
I FINALLY had to contact the group and they said that it was probably
a bug and that they would report it. This is still going on and the group discussions are going to my email. My email account is flooded with at least 50 messages every day. I have contacted the group 3 times and was told that it would be taken care of;however, it still goes on. I asked if I could close the account and I was told that there was no option. Is there a foolproof way to get this taken care of?
Well although they told you there is no way to close the account. I can guarantee there has to be a way to close or delete the account on all systems. So I'd SUGGEST asking them again and if not threaten that you'll contact their ISP / WebHost with notifications that they're spamming you.

There is no excuse to getting this many e-mails a day. If you need help identifying ISP/WebHost post where this discussion group is and we'll let you know.

Solve : GreaseMonkey scripts; I'm looking for more; What do you have??

Answer»

For some reason "SPELLING tip" shows up erratically. Once is up there, once not.
SOUND (which I changed to MARIO Brothers theme ), and icon color change work fine.
I still can click on yellow icon to display tips.
Does it work OK on your computer?I just tried typing in a few programs. The tip is displayed in Notepad, Wordpad, Word Perfect, and Quatro Pro. The tip is not displayed in Firefox, Thunderbird, OPENOFFICE, or KompoZer. I do not know why it works in some but not others.

The sound and icon work in all the programs. I changed the Replacement-List hotkey to "Ctrl + Shift + S". It works in all the programs that I tried.Good observation. It may be some applications internal spellcheck, which kills tinySpell's balloon tip.

Solve : Sound stopped working?

Answer»

I don't understand how this happened. My sound today randomly stopped WORKING, I didn't install or delete anything. The speakers work fine, and iIve tried other ones. Nothing is muted in the sound options, which I haven't changed in months. The strange thing is, if I un-mute my mic, I can hear myself through the speakers which are plugged in to the computer. I'm confused

UPDATE: This morning when I tried to TURN on my computer (it was in standby for the night) I instantly got a BSOD which said IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and the error code thing was STOP: 0x00000000A (0x96c0000C, 0x00000002, 0x00000000, 0x80523B2A). My sound ALSO randomly came back. When it booted back up, I got the usual "Windows has recovered from a SERIOUS error". I sent the error report to microsoft and they said it was corrupted, this is the page I got.

Solve : Need Help with HP?

Answer»

Lately when I log off my HP computer it automaticlly turns off after a few hours. When I come to log on again, I have to turn the surge protector off and back on and then my computer begins to go through the whole long re-boot process. It takes forever. I have a USB Belkin 4 port HUB pluged into my surge protector and no other cables into the USB hub. I have had this problem a few days after I installed my new hp printer.
Can someone tell me what has happened and how to correct this?

JudyBNot sure but - one thing you can do is right click on properties on desktop and select screensaver tab then - go to power management and see how that is set up ..... decide on time you want for standby and whether you want hibernation or not. Try ''never'' for hibernation but let standby be some finite time.

Can't see the USB hub being any effect, to be honest. Equally can't see how INSTALL of drivers for printer should have caused change but - check your power settings first ANYWAYS in case they changed SOMEHOW.

Solve : Yahoo Clock?

Is there a way to change the clock that it says on the MESSAGE the time you got it. ...can you be a little more specific? It seems that when I check my messages that it says that it was sent on that time but I'll check it later an theres a message that was supposeable sent at 6:30. There timed an date stamped. Are you talking about Yahoo! Mail or Yahoo! Messenger?Sorry, mail
Go to your Yahoo! Mail options, select Account Information. Edit Member Information, then you can change your time zone. That's about as much time change as you can do. Solve : Dual Harddrive Windows Booting Possible Question?

Answer»

I know that is possible to make a dual boot, but is there a way to have it on two differnt drives an select which one when it comes up?I don't understand what you're asking.
Do you want a dual boot with each OS on a separate drive? That's easily done, just install the OSes to the drives you want them on.Exatly, but will it work the same? The same as what?Dual bootingInstalling the operating systems to different hard drives is dual booting. Is that the same drive?I'm sorry but I really don't get what you're asking.
Perhaps this will HELP.You said that dual booting is having it on two drives but if you have two os on a single drive its called dual boot but I could be to strong with the one term.Dual booting is having MULTIPLE operating systems installed.
This can be on a single drive, with or without partitions, or on multiple drives.
Does that help?Thought I was being to strong with the word. So just have two master drives? One will be a sata the other are IDEI don't know what jumper settings will work for you but I usually have my drives as master, obviously on different channels.
See what works for you though, some drives can be picky.
Out of INTEREST, what operating systems are you planning to dual boot?I was thinking 2k an xp. Can the xp see the drrives connected to 2k then. As long as I say type deal.1 ) FIND out if your BIOS supports SWITCHING boot HDD's
2 ) Post alot more info on what you want to accomplish here.
3 ) Pay attention to any responses you may get so you can achieve the desired results.

For example my testbench machine has 3 HDD's but the BIOS only supports switching to 2 of them.
So on drive1 i have the option to boot to that drive and then have the option to boot to DOS 6.2; Win98SE; WinME and XP.
My 2nd HDD i have the option to boot to HDD2 and then have the choice of Win2KPro; another install of XP; UBUNTU; and Vista.

It takes a bit of effort to setup properly but again we need to know what it is you want to do....Its a biostar p4m80-m4 board I know that, can really get into the BIOS since I need a cpu,ram an sata drive. I just want it to come up saying what to boot too 2k or xp. I will this will take a little work.
