Solve : Computer hardly functioning PLEASE help me!?

Answer»

My NOTEBOOK had some trojan bugs on it and i took it to a computer store (HP or HB tech i think it was called) They reset the hard drive and wiped the computer clean. When I got it back it was working a little slow and I looked at the memory and it said 1GB but my computer had 2GB on it when I got it, I took it back and they said they didnt open it because there was no NEED to and told me that it only came in with 1GB. I know it had 2 and it was working fine with all my programs on it but with nothing on it, it's slow. Today I put my Norton360 and AdwareAlert back on it, and the computer wont do anything. It wont UNINSTALL any programs or go onto the internet or do a system restore. I dont know what to do. Im from australia and im in the states at the moment so my resources are limited. Also they charged me $135 to do it, is that the normal price? Someone please help me, i would greatly appreciate itI would start by calling a Lawyer....if you're sure it had 2G and now it has 1G i'd start there...Well, I don't know how much places usually charge to reformat a computer, but I always do it for free, so any price seems a bit much to me. Especially if it's in the triple digits... And this is a terrible way to deal with trojans, by the way. Anyway...they said they didn't open your computer? Has it ever been opened before? Many computers have a seal that is broken when the case is opened. Also, have you tried opening your computer to verify whether or not you have TWO sticks of RAM inserted?

This certainly sounds a bit SHADY, but you might want to look into it first before getting the authorities involved.Quote

Also, have you tried opening your computer to verify whether or not you have two sticks of RAM inserted?

the shop could've replaced a single stick of 2gb ram with 1gb.

Solve : Website Advertising Prices?

Answer»

I am running a SMALL (less than 200 VISITORS p/day) community website.

I was wondering what would be a reasonable cost for advertising. And when I say advertising, I mean a full page devoted to that ad.

Thanks.you mean haveing people ADVERTISE on your page?

I cant really understand but I would charge

2-3 Dollars a monthI mean that I would design the page and there would pictures of, say a local business, and a paragraph about it on the page.

I thought this would be the best place to come for an idea.

This page is on the website ALREADY but the website was handed over to me, and I am going to START putting pages like this, on there and start charging for them.

Solve : Windows board broke up to other boards.?

Answer»

Quote from: quaxo on June 02, 2009, 08:24:09 PM

One important thing to REMEMBER: A lot of people come here for computer help because they don't know much about computers. If we start breaking up the Windows BOARDS, it's GOING to lead to confusion. More than a few times I've asked people what version of Windows they have and they couldn't tell me.

Keep all Windows version together avoids the confusion of knowing where to post.

I THINK this is a good point....

It will help prevent clutter and posting in wrong forums...

Solve : PC Tuneup Procedures?

Answer»

What entails tuning-up a PC?
Using Windows XP for example, my thinking is: A) do error checking, defrag, and disk cleanup on the hard drive, B) run a virus scan and spyware, C) check if there's enough memory, and D) check for Window's updates and device drivers.
Is there anything else? Are there basic procedures that a tech follows? My procedure(s):
1) AV always resident (I use Kaspersky)
2) SpywareBlaster installed and updated weekly (passive spyware protection)
3) Weekly scans with either Super AntiSpyware or MalwareBytes
4) Weekly defrag of all drives
5) Monthly scans with AV
6) Windows update NOTIFICATION ON - and always install all security updates (others are optional)
7) NEVER install device driver updates from Windows Update and only update from OEM websites when there is a reason to update. Otherwise, leave WELL enough alone.
8 ) Run chkdsk /r from Recovery Console if and when needed or every 3-6 MONTHS or so.
9) Open CASE and blow out dust every 3-6 months or as needed

And most important - not for "tuneup" but for peace of mind and protection: Create a disk IMAGE of my system partition twice a week and store off-disk.Thanks Allan.
I printed your list and will follow.McGuire - that's just my list and my opinion. I'm sure there'll be others here too. I'm certainly flattered that you want to follow my procedures, but I neither claim nor think they are the only options. Keep checking this thread and pick and choose what you feel are the best - and most appropriate for you - from each post.Quote

I am having problems getting into my yahoo mail. It will load the page, then I will see the page which shows how many emails I have, then it will go blank. Earlier before there was message that showed up quickly and then I clicked it and it WENT AWAY. That's when the email stopped working. I think it was a JAVA message or something. I can't be sure. Does anyone know what could have happened. Anything is appreciated, thanks.I am ALSO having problems with att/yahoo. I tried to sign out of my email ACCOUNT and got a "page not found" message from FF. Goodsearch (which uses Yahoo) also will not work. Is there a server problem? Solve : Setting up a home network (general questions).?

Answer»
I currently have one HP Desktop (HP Pavilion Media Center TX PC m7640n) and one Dell Laptop (Dell Studio 1535 PP33L) in my study. I have attached the general Cable modem and one wireless Netgear Router (54mbps wireless WG11xv2). We have one HP J6480 Officejet printer and one Photosmart 3180 printer in USE. I would very MUCH like to network the laptop and desktop together but there are several questions that arise:
1) If I purchase new software (Windows OS, Norton Firewall, other basic PROGRAMS), can it be used in the network on both computers? 2) Do both computers need the same OS? Currently the HP has Windows 2000 and the Dell has Windows Visio. 3) Can this system be set up wireless? If so, are there cards for each compouter that I need to purchase? 4) I guess the most important question is do I need a network cable to CONNECT each computer, or can this be completed wireless. Is so, what software do I need?
Any assistance you could offer would be greatly appreciated.

If the software license agreement states the software is for use on one computer (which is typical), then that's exactly what it means.

2) Do both computers need the same OS?
No.

Quote
3) Can this system be set up wireless? If so, are there cards for each computer that I need to purchase?
Your laptop has built-in wireless, so it needs no card. The HP Pavilion Media Center TX PC m7640n would need a wireless card if you want wireless capability with it.

Quote
4) I guess the most important question is do I need a network cable to connect each computer, or can this be completed wireless. Is so, what software do I need?
I'm not quite clear on your what you're asking here. Do you mean to connect each computer to the router, or what? If you want to use a wireless INTERNET connection with your laptop, then you don't need a network cable for it since you have a wireless router. For Internet connectivity with your HP computer, you need a cable to connect it to the router, which I would think you already have.

If you want to network to two computers, you have everything you need. They can be networked via the router. No extra software is needed; Windows is all you need.

Solve : How to quote part of a post in forum??

Answer»

I know how to quote the whole of a post. But what about part of it?

I know how to quote the whole of a post. But what about part of it?

I used "Insert quote" button in a reply and then I copied and pasted. It comes out different from other quotes that I have seen.
By "Insert quote" button, do you mean the button that appears above the message composition panel? Or, do you mean the "Insert quote" link that appears at the top of each preceding post in a thread (you may NEED to scroll down the page to see them)? If you use the Insert Quote link, as I did for the above quote, you get the full content of the original post (0P) and the username of the member being quoted appears above the quote. If you do not want to quote the entire post, just cut the unwanted part out.

If you use the "Insert quote" button, then the name of the member being quoted does not appear.

Sometimes, I copy content from a post I'm going to be quoting into Notepad, MAKE the modifications there, and then copy it into the message composition panel.

Does that HELP?It helped. THANKS.

Solve : Wake on LAN?

Answer»

I think I asked this once before, but I didn't quite get the right answer.

Is there a program that will enable Wake on LAN on any computer?
We would like to be ABLE to start up many computers at once. (Example: The High School and Elementry labs) since there are quite a few computers, and its a PAIN to not have them ready to go.

THOUGH WoL can be enabled manually, a program to do it automatically would be great. We can easily distribute any program, and then execute it (whether it is a script, or something that just needs to be run) using Symantec GHOST.

Most of our computers are Dells. Most of them have Wake on LAN disabled in the BIOS... I believe Windows can configure it differently.

Thank you for any suggestions.

- Jesse ZylstraI use this for my laptop:

http://www.dennisbabkin.com/php/download.php?what=WOSBI'm not sure that's quite what I am looking for. I need something that can wake up the computer after having been completely shut down.
The description I read of the program explains it can wake up from Hibernate, and Standby. Perhaps what I need isn't possible without individually configuring the BIOS on every computer.
Well, 10 computers down... 30 more to go in that room, 260 more total...

Solve : 2.5" SATA II Diagnostics?

Answer»

I need a program, burnable to CD, that can diagnose a Laptop 2.5" SATA II Drive.
Its WesternDigital on a Gateway machine.

I recently discovered that I hate Gateway--they have a 13 character long serial number in print that is too small for me to easily read... I tried it many times, and Gateway keeps denying it, so I can't use whatever software they have for me, since I can't get to it.

Anyways, thank you for your help.

BEST,
Jesse Zylstra
WD's disk tools are called Data Lifeguard Tools...if you will be making a boot disk from it you want the DOS version...

Here Ya Go...Patio,
I think I love you.

I knew WD had Lifeguard, but I thought it was drive-specific and might not work on just any of their drives. I'll be burning it a bit later, and will let you know how it works out

Thanks,
Jesse ZylstraPatio,

Upon running, there is a very long delay with a blank screen, then a message saying that the License.txt file could not be found, and then it tells me it can not find command.com (press any key to retry, the old DOS drill)
What tools did you use to burn the .iso to a bootableCD ? ?
Try imgBurn FREE...and maybe a fresh DLoad as it might have gotten corrupted.I used Ubuntu's default (which, I have never had problems with).
Though, right now, I'm out of blank CD's. I might try working on getting a bootable USB Drive to work. Got it.

From a SMART Test. Not exactly /always/ the best test, but it shows that the drive has failed.

See results:
http://pastebin.ca/1568039

You know... a very very long time ago, back in the ages of Windows 3.11 actually (and, I think 95 did it as well), Windows would tell you when your drive was failing. Whatever happened to that?

I think it still has a valid warranty, I'll have to ask my customer if they still have the details on that.

Thanks for your help, Patio!

- Jesse ZylstraWD HDD's carry a 3 year warranty...
Unless it's a Caviar series which is 5 years...
BTW WD's customer SERVICE is a pleasure to deal with...one reason i continue to use their drives.
I had one go about 4 months past the 5 yr. warranty...communicated with them and they replaced it for me...above and beyond the call of duty.

Best of Luck.Do you think I should get a replacement through Dell or WD?
Also, does WD do free SHIPPING?

I know in the past, WD was one of the cheaper drives and not as well built. I take it they have gone past this reputation now. If you are replacing it yourself you'll probably find the best deals at newegg...
Great shipping
Great service

Did you contact WD about an RMA on the dead drive ? ?
They may still replace it FREE for you...I'll call WD, I'd rather only have to send one part back...
The Dell should still be under warranty, HOWEVER
Oh gosh, its a Gateway computer. I can't believe I forgot... I'll call Gateway if WD isn't going to replace the drive, and if that fails, I'll put a new one up for order. Gateway won't replace the drive...deal with WD.Quote from: patio on September 19, 2009, 01:21:39 PM

Gateway won't replace the drive...deal with WD.
WD Won't replace the drive because it came from a system manufacturer...
What a pickle!

I've emailed Gateway, and indirectly accused them of sending a defective drive (because they did...) also attached S.M.A.R.T. report. I just hope they'll allow me to just send the drive back, and not the entire laptop. Best of Luck...
I've never heard of that before.Okay... they sent me more steps than what the average person could handle in one page... and then three different ways to burn a CD.

"If still it shows that the hard drive is defective, I will do the needful."
Welcome to INDIA (I think it's safe to guess)

Solve : diskedit.exe?

Answer»

Quote

1. Boot the computer to a command prompt (not Windows); Diskedit needs exclusive access to the drives you plan to examine. If you use Windows 9x, press F8 or Ctrl to bring up the startup menu and select Safe Mode Command Prompt, or use the Windows 9x/Me Emergency start up disk (make one with add/remove programs). If you use Windows 2000 or XP, insert a blank floppy disk into drive A:, right-click drive A: in My Computer, and select Format. Select the CREATE an MS-DOS startup Disk option and use this disk to start your computer.[/i]

All this is predicated by SAYING it doesn't exist in Windows...
There was a diskedit in DOS but it was not even close to the Norton utility...Quote
Yes, I am at a command prompt. I made an ms-dos boot disk as per instructions and booted to it. When I'm at the A:\> prompt, I type C: and it says Invalid Drive Specification
The book you have is either very old or badly edited.
You MUST do your experiments on the A: drive. You can edit SECTORS on the A: drive until you ruin it and then you will have to create a new floppy.
FYI. You can use the old DEBUG program to edit the floppy disk also. And a great learning experience. Quote

If I had read the page just before the instructions I would have known this. I didn't exactly start the "Windows Data Recovery" chapter at the beginning.

Solve : Choppy Playback?

Answer»

Hello! First time posting here and I appreciate any help or suggestions.

I RECENTLY upgraded my dinasour Dimension 2400 with a HIS Radeon HD 4350 H435H512PP video card. Everything is installed and running great. The main reason for updating the VC was to be able to watch movies on my big screen HDTV from the internet. The television is a Samsung LN46A550 1080p 60 Hz and I have HDMI to HDMI connection from video card to the TV.

I remember hearing that I could seriously damage my tv if resolutions from the comptuer didnt match resolutions from the tv?? Therefore, before I attempted to watch a movie from a website I noticed that the ATI was indicating the display settings in desktop mode were just 800/600. I therefore, fearing that those resolution settings would ruin my TV, changed it to 1920/1080. The result was the desktop icons shrunk quite a bit and open windows were more difficult to read.

I then tried PLAYING the movie in full screen and it was extremely choppy, like frame by frame. It seemed to work fine WITHOUT full screen. I did NOT attempt to watch the movie in full screen under the 800/600 resolution settings.

I am very novice when it comes to computers. Is there a solution to my problem? I appreciate any help you can provide me with this. Thank you!

I use my laptop with my HD 40" 1080p TV at res 1024 by 768. I have never heard of a problem where a computer could damage a TV by using the wrong resolution. I truly don't see how that could happen....
What programmes are you using in the background when you play these movies? What programme are you playing the movies with? Are you buffering these videos from the internet or are you playing them from your hard drive?
I am buffering from the website, it is quicksilverscreen. Not sure what player it uses. Quote from: Mulreay on September 25, 2009, 03:26:55 PM

the same way a monitor can get damaged using the wrong resolution... but the problem is two-fold since Televisions don't all have the more diverse multi-sync abilities of a Monitor- for example older TVs simply tune to the RF input and "assume" it meets NTSC specifications for overscan and chroma/Luma format.

However that being said newer televisions are far more resistant and do in fact recognize out of range values and often make adjustments for it.

I've run a HD 1080p at 800x600, 1024x768, and 1440x900 all with no ill EFFECTS.Quote from: swennybear23 on September 25, 2009, 05:05:24 PM

Thanks. How do your youtube videos play? or files within 'your videos', stuff off the HDD?I havent tried Youtube, but I was able to play a video from the hard drive in full screen...cant remember if it was under the new 1920 x 1080 settings though. I will try it tonight HOPEFULLY!I was able to play a DivX movie from the hard drive under 1920/1080 resolution without any problems and the picture looked great! So does that mean it is a RAM problem? ThanksYou could see how many processes are running in the background and turn off anything not necessary. See if that helps.

Solve : Amazon Kindle 2 vs sony prs700bc??

Answer»

I want to buy ONE of the ebook above, which is the best one for me?Do you have one?I don't have either one but I just read that the Sony captures handwriting so it might be good for a student. I don't believe the Kindle does that.

Also, recently Amazon sold George Orwell EBOOKS for the KINDEL that it turns out they didn't have the RIGHTS to so they remotely deleted the ebooks. They gave refunds to everyone involved but that is still creepy to me that they have that kind of power over the Kindle.

Solve : How to make an old Compaq V55 monitor adjust.?

Answer»

I have an Emachines T6410. The LED monitor went completely out on me so I had this old Compaq V55 monitor I hooked up until I can afford to get another LED monitor.
Try as I MAY, I have not been able to adjust anything on this Compaq V55 Monitor. The colors are brilliant--even better than my LED was, but things are a bit FUZZY such as my instant messenger list and such.
I have no clue what each button on the Compaq V55 monitor is for, but I have pressed each ONE and NONE of them do a thing one way or another!
I also dl the Compaq V55 drivers thinking maybe because it is so old my computer didn't have the right driver for it, but this did not help things either.
Anyone PLZ HELP!! as I cannot afford another monitor at this TIME!
Kindest Regards,
Ctipling

Solve : MULTI OS BOOT?

Answer»

I just finished assembling a new quad core box and I want to set it up for multiple OSs: Vista (64), Ubuntu(64), Snow Leopard. I did this once about 15 years ago, but everything has changed since then. I need to make CONTACT with someone with a solid background in Grub, VM, or some other methodology who can guide me through this process. I tried a couple of other geek sites, but my request was met with contempt. I'm hoping to locate someone GENEROUS enough to help me out on this one. I've already done a tour of the web for sites that have detailed instructions on any of the available approaches, but either their info is sketchy, designed for someone who already knows the process, or offers to sell you help on a blind reference basis (which in my experience usually turns out to be worthless.) I am not a novice: I have worked with mainframe computers for over 40 years and PCs since the days of the first MAC and Windows 1.0; I have built over a dozen PCs so far, and the only reason I am looking for help is because we are talking here about processes that can be very tricky since they involve modifying boot records and building structures that are LITTLE used by most PC users. Thanks in advance for anyone who can help.

DanIt's a lot easier than it was 15 years ago, you can run Ububtu from inside Windows (no manual partitioning) and Ubuntu will set up the boot loader for you. It works just fine.
You can also do a full blown install, I suggest you get the Ubuntu flavour you want in CD form and read the install instructions, it won't be like the old days.

Of course you did that, -Right?

Back to Topic. Mufti Booting can be done easily by having more that one hard drive. The BIOS likely has a boot option that lets you chose the other HDD at boot time.Yes...I guess any idiot should know that.

-DanI already have 64 bit versions of all the OSs on CDs including Ubuntu Server. I don't wish to do anything messy like using three hard drives and have to CONTROL which one loads via the bios. I also don't want to run one within another and have the overhead of an entire OS for a shell. Grub of some VM option seems possible but I don't know the pros and cons of either.

-DanIt is not really my idea. This is what experts say:
Quote
Dual Boot Vista and Linux
Requirements:
- 2 Hard Drives
- Linux Install CD
- Vista Install DVD
- Computer powerful enough to run Vista
Why this is nessissary
Vista comes with a more difficult to work with bootloader. If you install Vista, then Grub, it wipes out the Vista Bootloader. It used to be that you could just tell Grub what to do to boot into Windows, but Windows no longer boots on it’s own: It needs its *special* bootloader!

This may seem convoluted, but in order to counteract this, I keep the Windows Bootloader on the Windows drive. However, I then make that drive the 2nd drive and install the Grub bootloader on the 1st drive. This makes the computer boot Grub first, which can either go right into Linux or it can boot into the 2nd drive, remapping the drives so that the Windows Bootloader can take over
Source:
http://www.pctipsbox.com/dual-boot-vista-and-linux/
If windows does not recognize another drive ans one of its kind, it will not give it a drive letter. So windows is still on C: drive.OK given the 2 drive approach you describe, there are several versions of Grub around. Which one should I use, and where can I download it. Also, aside from the additional problems of installing OS X on a PC, how does Snow Leopard fit into the scenario you just described of loading Vista and Ubunto with Grub? What you outlined sounds like it's going in the right direction. Thanks.

-DanThe main advantage of installing to 2 seperate drives is if the bootloader has issues you cannot boot to either OS...
I suspect getting leopard to run will be the most difficult task at hand here...Also, what you described introduces another problem. I have only large hard drives 500GB or better. The box I just setup has 1 500 and two 1.5TB drives on it now. What I wanted to do was set up all the OSs on separate partitions on the same (smaller drive) and then have all the remaining space on the three drives available to allocate whatever way I wanted to. Is there anyway I can adapt the process to accomplish this, or, if not, what is the next best-case scenario. Part of the initial idea was not to set up one PC per OS but have to have everything in one box capable of sharing all the resources (4 core, highgrade GPS, multiTB space, 802.11n on an overclocked router, etc.) There has to be a way! I had considered VM, but I don't know how to get my hands on a VM OS since the only one I know of is priced for and available to commercial users only.

Right. Any OS that modifies the MBR in a funny way will make trouble. Have two drives helps. Let the cranky OS modify its onw MBR on its drive.

Solve : My computer is possesed?

Answer»

Hey y'all!
My computer is an old one (about 5 years old) so it's AGP. Recently, I decided to buy a new grafic card (ATI Radeon HD 4650) which is made for AGP computers. I also bought a new monitor: LG flatron w2053 TQ. Of course, I bought all the equipment needed for the card to run correctly ( new power supply, more memory, etc) but when I run any game, they crash after a few sec-min and a message box APPEARS saying that there are ''LGDispDrv'' problems. Then my computer restarts by itself or the screen becomes.. fuzzy. All my drivers are updated. I don't know if the problem is the screen, the videocard or something else.I would really appreciate technical help
If more information about my computer is needed, tell me and I will gladly dissect it for the cause! Please post the EXACT error message.

Is your system guaranteed malware free?

& Welcome to the CH forums.Sounds like the card doesn't support that monitors resolution.I couldn't say exactly what it is since my windows is in french : ''There is a problem with the display driver LGdispdrv''

If I understand well, it could be because of the AGP graphic card? I mean, it's an old technology so maybe it can't fit with the monitor that is probably made for PCI graphic cards only. Is that what you are saying? (I'm not that good with informatic ahaha)

If it is, is there any SOLUTION to make it work... beside selling everything for a new PCI exp computer ?!

and thanks for the welcome! Can you post more specs on the graphics card?

I see that monitor has both DVI-D and VGA inputs. What are you using?Graphics ChipsetATI Radeon HD 4600 Series
Graphics Bus CapabilityAGP

Memory Size1024 MB
Memory TypeDDR2 1Gb

Solve : ping and my game?

i need help. i would like to know if there is a way to limit the ping time i have, i run xp and have a dial up connection. my ping rate is ANYWHERE from 300-999+ in the game i play. can i bring this down and control it ?

thanks for your help all !

johnJohn,

We definitely understand your frustration with receiving high pings. Unfortunately however there is no way to control the ping, the ping is the time it takes for your computer to send a packet to another computer and get it back and is all based off of the speed of your connection and the game servers. Two suggestions that could help are to try alternate servers, as some servers may be closer and allow you a better ping and of course if available you should definitely consider broadband.

Solve : Advice on purchasing a new laptop?

Answer»

Hi All,

Our previous laptop went belly up after five years of use and so we need a new one. Please can anyone advise on what would be a good laptop to go for. Our budget is around the £300 mark and £360 absolute max. My wife and I aren't computer buffs at all and will only use the laptop for surfing, Hotmail and typing the odd letter (hence why we don't want to spend a fortune). As long as it's a laptop with a decent size screen and reasonably quick internet connection/page downloading times we'll be happy.

Thanks in advance for any advice/recommendations.

Grant, EnglandHi,
If the new Laptop you are buying has Vista INSTALLED, make sure that it has at least 4 gig of memory, 3 gig minimum, same with Windows 7 coming out next month, or get XP if you can as it's still GREAT for a good few years yet. You should be able to buy a nice laptop with your budget, Dell, Acer, Toshiba, are all good, LAPTOPS are great, I find people tend to ditch their Desktops and get laptops these days as they are easier and take up less room, plus they don't require 400 + watts to RUN like Desktops do, just a power supply, good for the Planet etc
PaulIf you really dont like to spend much, you can try netbooks nowadays. They're pretty popular and pretty cheap and will everything that you would need to do on a laptop. If you're good with screens ranging from 10.1 to 12.1 inches, then this would be your best bet. It would run around 300-450 usd depending on the screen size, processor, memory and battery that comes in with the computer. Quote

Thanks in advance for any advice/recommendations.
This is a very broad recommendation.
Do not ever buy a laptop/notebook computer.
Unless you really need a mobile computer.
  • They cost more, have less performance.
  • May give you a back ace from poor posture.
  • Are hard to repair.
  • Can do be readily upgraded.
  • Are easily damaged.

Now a specific recommendation.
Buy a Toshiba. You will like it.

Hi,
If the new Laptop you are buying has Vista installed, make sure that it has at least 4 gig of memory,

Yeah if it's Win Vista 64. If it's 32 then you are wasting 1.2gb as it will only use 2.8gb.

Solve : Youtube,,,?

Answer» GOOD Hi again, Sorry to be a pest but tonight speedtest says download is 4.65, upload is 0.74, ping 57. PC pitstop says download is 5667 and up is 0.739, ping 88. Maybe the company we get our DSL from read this forum?

TomMaybe. You better take a look at your DSL bill and see what speed you're paying for.10.0Then, call your ISP and ask, what's wrong with them...For me one minute youtube is working and the next it isn't. It's something I'm on several times a day so I'm about to start going through withdrawals lol. I am having some issues with malware so that may be it. If your problem comes back if you get a chance let me know I'm just wondering if its just my computer or if its others too.

JenHi, I have noticed that after we get rain the connection gets really slow. Some of the phone line coming to the house is under ground and really old so maybe water is getting into it and CAUSING the PROBLEMS.

TomVery possible.it might not be your internet it could be some sort of virus causing this Or just a slow computer I would try to reload adobe flash PLAYER. I have linux and i couldn't get adobe to work and had to use something else that didn't work to well videos kept pausing after i updated to 9.10 adobe worked well and so did the vidoes.

Although you probably have windows reloading adobe might help i THINK.

Solve : Systray not adjustable since Exploere 8 download??

Answer» HELP!or I'm going to throw this laptop out the window shortly!!! When my laptop was returned from the factory(bad screen replaced), things seemed O.K., but I soon realized that the TECH had replaced my Explorer7 with 6, and I needed the latter's features. When I went to the Microsoft website, it was encouraging downloading Explorer 8 (instead of 7), so I did. I've since noticed ('tho it may not be related to ie8) that I can no longer alter what icons appear in my systray. When I GO into taskbar properties, it displays the icons, but the drop-down menus which are supposed to let you select if an icon is: 1. always displayed, 2. always hidden, or 3. hidden when inactive no longer appear. Is there something I can do to fix it, or do I have to unload ie8 and download ie7 to see if that changes things?
The other annoying problem this problem has (and that it had before I sent it to be fixed) is the intermittent freezes which seem to happen with no provocation on my part, but require me to power off and re-start. The Event log shows alert events 1003 & 1015, which, according to the MSN site, require one to adjust the registry -- something to do with SNMP settings, something. I'm very nervous about messing with my registry, and I didn't UNDERSTAND the MSN instructions. It sounds simple for a techie, but I'm afraid if I bring it somewhere LOCALLY, it'll void my warranty. Again, HELP!!! P.S. My laptop is running XP.

Solve : Mouse pointer seems to lock when I use keyboard?

Answer»

I am USING Windows Vista HOME Premium SP1.
The Laptop is an Acer Aspire 4810T.

The problem I am having is to do with my touchpad/mouse pointer.

You see whenever I use my keyboard, I find that my mouse pointer (on-screen) is UNABLE to move for about a second or so after I press and let go of a key.
If I am holding down a key, the mouse pointer will not move whatsoever until around a second after I let go of the key.

This however does not HAPPEN when I use ctrl, shift, fn, or alt.

At the same time, when I am pressing down a key - a NUMBER of functions of the touchpad are still available. For example I can use gestures on the touchpad to zoom in and out, scroll, and click.
I am also able to click left and right buttons when I am pressing down a key.

I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix this problem?

Solve : Windows has detected an IP Address conflict question?

Answer»

I have gotten an error message on my computer and I'm afraid it means something really bad. This is what it says, "Windows has detected an IP Address conflict. Another computer on this network has the same IP Address as this computer. Contact your network administrator for help resolving this issue. More details are AVAILABLE in the Windows Event Log. Network Error". Is this a serious issue and how do I GET to the System Event Log? Sounds like a potential HACK or already hacked. Thanks.Someone else on your network has the same IP address. You need to contact your system administrator. If the other user is connect it will automatic kick the other user out. Therefore the other users cannot use the the internet, no connection...etc.Quote from: cervantes100 on October 15, 2009, 06:31:36 PM

Yes you got it I guess, I do get booted out alot disconnected all the time. How do I contact the system administrator? Is it the Wi-Fi signal doing this? If so, I never did like the Wi-Fi interfering with my wireless signal. How do I access the Windows System Event Log? Thanks.

Solve : Can a laptop impact my desktop's startup??

Answer»

I have a Dell pc desktop and it was working great. Then I bought a TOSHIBA laptop that runs wifi from the same modem my pc uses. As I was setting up my new google page on my laptop.....it picked up all my information from my other computer's home screen. Now both of my COMPUTERS have the same themes...and EVERYTHING. But here comes the problem....my pc doesn't want to boot up windows and wants to start in the "safe" mode. I was wondering if my new laptop (that runs Vista) could be interfering with my pc (that runs EXPLORER). I took my pc to the shop and they said it was starting up fine there. Could anyone help me with some ideas about what to do. Right now I am just not turning off my pc.... Thanks for any help.

Solve : defrag/chkdsk problem?

Answer»

I think there was only one ISO file in the link, and that's the one that I downloaded; I'll double-check...
I tried burning another DISK, still the same; maybe I'm going about it wrong. What I did was downloaded the ISO file to my desktop, and then dragged that to my CD burner and burned as an ISO file. Is that the CORRECT procedure to follow? Then I NOTICED on the properties box for the ISO file on my desktop, a note that the file had been copied from another computer and may be blocked. So I checked the box to unblock, and tried another burn; still boots directly to Windows Setup and gives the error message described previously.No...
All you did is burn the .iso...
Dload and USE PowerISOI'll try when I get home from work this afternoon. In the MEANTIME, I downloaded and ran MyDefrag v4.2.2 from NoNags. At least I got a defrag to run.

Solve : Pre-downloaded dvd's?

Answer»

What is a pre-downloaded dvd? Almost everything I've found online pertains to the website where I saw the phrase. http://questioncopyright.com/dvds.html I am also confused because the same product (the movie) is sold on Amazon with apparently different packaging, making it look like a DVD and the product from the website a "pre-downloaded dvd".

This another question, but it's related.:
I work in a college library and was surprised when some movie DVD's came with a disc that students said wouldn't play on their computers. Looking at the packaging it seemed you had to go online and download something. What is the PURPOSE of PROVIDING a physical DVD if you then have to go online and download something? Why not provide it on the DVD? Is it for copyright reasons? This disc would be accompanied by either a dvd of the movie or a dvd of additional scenes, interviews, etc. I've never heard of "pre-downloaded dvd", but I've heard of "pre-DVDs": http://www.homemediamagazine.com/sony-pictures/studios-reportedly-eyeing-pre-dvd-home-theatrical-window-16950
Quote

Facing sluggish DVD sales and a surge in lower-margin disc rentals, some Hollywood studios are reportedly considering OFFERING new movies via Internet-enabled high-definition televisions prior to the DVD/Blu-ray Disc release.

As for DVD PLAYING problems, in 99% cases, it's computer problem. Most likely, missing codecs, burn-out lasers, dirty lasers, etc.

Solve : HP Laptop freezes?

Answer»

Hello everyone,
My daughter's HP dv6800 laptop keeps freezing at various times during usage (it's running Windows Vista). Mostly, it's when she's on the internet. Could it be registry issues? Any suggestions?
Is there a GOOD free registry cleanup software that someone could recommend?
Thanks
Do NOT use ANY registry cleaner - they cause more problems than they ....... well, actually they don't "fix" anything. They just cause problems.

No it is not a registry problem. Boot to safe MODE - does the SYSTEM freeze in safe mode?I will try in safe mode this WEEKEND. Can you go on the internet safely on safe mode?
BTW, it's actually an HP dv6000 not 6800.
ThanksHello everyone,
I wrote to HP's SUPPORT and their response actually helped. All I did was update the network adapter (NVIDIA nForce networking controller) under Device Manager and have had no problem; laptop stays online without freezing!

Solve : Numbers?

Answer»

I'll ANTICIPATE the next question:
Are two 32 bit CPUs the same as one dual core 32 bit CPU?

I would SAY yes, but dual core is more efficient and maybe somewhat faster. It depends on how well the OS implements SMP.
