Seems like most say to burn a VCD or SVCD.

Good luck!Yeah, you will need to look for an .avi to DVD converter.

I have this on one of my computers:
http://www.vso-software.fr/products/convert_x_to_dvd/?ap=avangate&aid=1891

It works pretty well. It is pretty expensive though, about $160 USD.
It was a gift to my grandfather though.you will need a program like the one Carbon Dudeoxide recommended, or you will need to purchase a DivX compatible DVD player. if you plan on burning alot of movies, i strongly suggest PURCHASING a DivX compatible DVD player. reason being, converted AVI files take up alot more room then straight AVI files. for example, a SHOW i like to watch has all its episodes in AVI format. if i convert the AVI files i can only burn 10 episodes to a 4.7gb blank DVD, whereas if i dont convert the AVI files, i can fit up to 23 episodes onto one 4.7gb blank DVD.

an added note, PowerIso is a good, free, utility for burning AVI files straight to DVD's.This thread ought to win the "Least informative title" prize for JULY. Quote from: Dias de verano on July 26, 2008, 03:33:07 AM

Better than 400 pages of computer video codec/format talk.

The OP will decide: Hey, Jamie, did you get your .avi file to play in the DVD player?

Wait a minute...did you say, "Prize?"
