Solve : To convert Windows dictionary to smartphone app able to run?

Answer»

I have some dictionary installed on my computer. This dictionary had been installed from the CD which came along with a hard copy (a book). I wonder is possible to convert such a Windows dictionary to certain type of application that would be able to run on my smartphone (Windows Mobile)? I know there are some programs around that convert .exe to .cab files, but besides .exe files I see the other ones like .DAT, .dll, .dct in the installation folder of dictionary on my computer.

Would be possible that kind of convertion at the first place? It is important to know that Microsoft Windows is not platform for a wide range of electronic DEVICES. Microsoft Windows programs run only on some popular versions of Windows and if the CPU is an AMD or Intel CPU made in the past few years.
There are some receptions, which prove the rule.

Recently MS released a Office version just for the iPhone. This means that some documents you write with Word or Excel could be read and edited on an iPhone. But it is a very EXCEPTIONAL product and took MS awhile to develop it.

Microsoft Releases Office App for iPhone

As for Smartphones other than t Apple, there is little chance that MS would soon do Office for the Android system.

This may be the answer you want. It is possible to run some Windows programs on a powerful Smartphone with the right software. I don't know how it WORKS. Here is the link:

Solve : Hi, everybody. Does anybody know...?

Answer»

Hi, everybody. I've got a question I hope somebody can help me answer.

I post on a message board and somebody there has a LITTLE box that shows at the bottom of their post that tells you what song they're listening to at the moment. It will say something like:

Now Playing:

Song: When Will I Be Loved
Artist: Linda Ronstadt
Album: Greatest Hits

The person who had it no longer posts there so I can't ask them.

Has anybody EVER seen that? Does anybody know where I can download one?

Thanks for your helpNo.
Not without knowing what SITE it is and what plugin or app they use...OK. I was just hoping you might have seen it somewhere. Song: When Will I Be Loved

Nice, comprehensive answer. Not to the question that was asked of course, but comprenensive NONE the less.Back in the day, uniquely among my CIRCLE of friends, I liked "Poor Poor Pitiful Me", and used to play it on jukeboxes in bars. About 1977 I think.Amazon also has that one..

Does the forum allow Java objects? I could embed it as a object and everyone could hear it.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 14, 2013, 05:41:52 PM

Solve : What is "C"??

Answer»

Hi -
I enjoyed reading "Never heard of operating system". To give you an idea of what I know (or don"t know), In the 70s I learned to write programs in Fortran 4 and wrote programs for the company I worked for. It seems to me you think "C" is the best place to start if a person wants to learn programing. Is "C" available in any study at home format. I probly will not go back to studing again but I am curious? Thanks BobSure. Books, library, Internet sources, etc. From Amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss_1?url=search-alias%3Daps&field-keywords=c%20programming%20language&sprefix=c+programming+language%2Caps&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3Ac%20programming%20language

From a Google search on how to study c programming language: http://www.cprogramming.com/how_to_learn_to_program.htmlsoybean
Thanks That was just what I wanted. I will fallow up with that. BobMay I kindly suggest you download a free copy of Microsoft Visual Studio. That package will let you do some programming in C, if you wish. Nevertheless, C++ is a better choice, in the opinion of many, many programmers and authors.
Here is a closed topic on another forum that represents the views of some.

Why would anybody use C over C++ ?
Geek-9pm -
Thanks for your suggestion. I will check it out. BobQuote from: Geek-9pm on April 24, 2013, 02:24:56 PM

You can even force PROJECTS to compile as C, rather than C++ code. This essentially disables all C++ features. Why that would be desired for a desktop APPLICATION, I don't know- but it's there.

Your suggestion of a book from Amazon was good. I had never dealth with Amazon before. I spent an hour and a half talking to a MAN I could hardly understand but everything came together and I am getting a book on C programming. Thanks for your help. Bob soybean, Geek-9PM,BC_Programmer -
For your infromation. I got the C programming book and got "Jumping into C++" book. Both of these books had an example of how to write a program. If you followed their example you could write a program that would print "hello world". I could not get the programs to work because when I clicked on places they wanted me to, the result would sometimes be different than the example shown in the book. I may get some one to help me. I doubt that I could explain the problem to the forum, I NEED a hands on. Thanks you all were very helpful.

Solve : Youtube - Flash Crashing due to bad ad on 2 computers with Firefox?

Answer»

Found it interesting today that an ad at the top of www.Youtube.com for Samsung Galaxy was showing as a green rectangular window but yet the watermark etc shown as Galaxy, which I assume is Samsung Galaxy, and it was crashing Flash Plugin and causing Firefox to lock up. After about 20 seconds a message popped up giving choice to wait or shutdown the flash plugin that is not responding. Tried this 3 times on same computer, then gave up on my desktop and fired up my netbook and same issue happened with latest Firefox and Youtube main page's Galaxy ad crashing it.

Maybe when I go to Youtube later, they will have fixed or moved on to a different advertisement that doesnt crash Flash on Firefox and render Youtube non-functional, since without Flash youtube cant play videos etc. Did not test it with IE or any other browser.

Seems as though this ad is a corrupt file linked to their main site, or doesnt play well with latest Firefox and Flash Plugin. The ad won't GET past the first 3 seconds for me.

I use adblock so I would never have noticed it. Had to DISABLE it to see what you were talking about.Maybe I should be using adblock
I love it.

I love that it gets rid of that stuff on the left.VERY COOL!!!

Going to try that out when I get home from work! The ad at the top of www.Youtube.com for Samsung Galaxy played fine for me in IE10 and Opera 12.15 on my Windows 8 laptop. I don't have Firefox installed on this computer.Interesting that it appears to be an issue with Firefox's Flash Plugin then.

Only other difference is that your running Windows 8 and Carbon and I are running Win 7I just tried on my Win 7 desktop system, using Firefox 19... and it worked. It seemed a bit SLOW in DISPLAYING the ad but once it was displayed, I could expand the ad and CLICKED to forward and backward arrows that appear in the expanded view of the ad.

Just out of curiosity, what antivirus program are you using? And, any other protections apps running in the background? Only using MSSE, no other protections other than whats already built into FF20 with virus scan for downloads etc.

Also guessing that with enough people using FF20, that Youtube aka Google may have gotten complaints to fix it by now, since 6 hrs have gone by since I had the issue at home with 2 different computers both running FF20, and cant test it from Gov computer.

Has anyone ever installed MetaTrader 4 on their computer? Have you ever had problems trying to uninstall it? If anyone can help me I would be sooo grateful!

Solve : archiving video to external hard drive?

Answer»

Hi I was hoping to archive family home dvds to an external hard drive & wondering on the best way forward.

Up to now I’ve used corel VIDEO studio 2010, which also at the same time saved the dvds to WMP files. For whatever reason my corel program got corrupted & deleted all the files saved to corel.

I still have the footage on my pc in Windows Media Player but its broken up into multiple short clips of a few seconds each which does not make much of a viewing experience.

My questions:-

1.If I wanted to stay with corel & reload everything back onto it from mini dvd, would I need to also install the corel software onto my external hard drive to view it there?

2. I would prefer to move everything into WMP as its more versatile, but how can I CONDENSE all these wmp files that originally came from 5 dvd mini DISKS into 5 watchable long clips like the original mini disks they came from?

3. Can you recommend a software program that can convert from CAMCORDER mini disc to wmp without breaking it up into small bits?
Quote

1.If I wanted to stay with corel & reload everything back onto it from mini dvd, would I need to also install the corel software onto my external hard drive to view it there? ( NO - The software just needs to be installed to Windows and no matter where the media is located it can handle it. )

2. I would prefer to move everything into WMP as its more versatile, but how can I condense all these wmp files that originally came from 5 dvd mini disks into 5 watchable long clips like the original mini disks they came from? ( See answer to #3, Format Factory might work and its available for free download. )

3. Can you recommend a software program that can convert from camcorder mini disc to wmp without breaking it up into small bits? ( I use Format Factory for CONVERSIONS which is free and worth a try, but not sure if it will handle those files or not. I create AVI's with Format Factory. )
ok ill try it

Solve : I Tunes to Windows Media Player?

Answer»

Purchased for first time music from ITunes. I want to transfer and play it through Windows Media Player.

Is there a process I can use to do this?

Thanks
I googled "can you play songs from itunes with windows media player" and got 92,200,000 results

Here is the link

http://www.google.co.uk/#output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=can+you+play+songs+from+itunes+with+windows+media+player&oq=can+you+play+songs+from+itunes+with+windows+media+player&gs_l=hp.12..0i22i30l2.12335.12335.0.13516.1.1.0.0.0.0.167.167.0j1.1.0...0.0...1c..9.psy-ab.m8YRqqbXAoc&pbx=1&bav=on.2,or.r_qf.&bvm=bv.45368065,d.d2k&fp=d1f8cbd7a4f08168&biw=1366&bih=676

hope this helpsIf you strip the DRM off of it you can. Easiest method was burning a CD using iTunes so you have a physical copy of what you bought to play in your cars CD player etc, and then RIP off of that CD using Windows Media Player with the DRM lost at the CD creation, so you can make a MP3 that will play in any MP3 player etc. Thanks for your help.
The link took me to advice "right click on one of the files, select Open With... Choose Program. The trouble is I cant locate Open With or Choose Progam any where. Have tried EXPORTING the file and changing the defaults to WMP without success. Also I have been unable to locate "Add to Library" on the WMP site.
I would take the advice about burning a CD using iTunes etc but at this STAGE I only want move one song from iTunes to WMP! Later with a folder of music I will use that method as well. Have spent several hours searching so hope you can help?iTunes does not have DRM protection (anymore).

Open windows media player, then drag the music file into the media player window. Does that work?As soon as I click and drag on the iTunes file the WMP site disapears so no result!I mean the file itself.

Right click the song and click on "open file location"The file is what I have been clicking on. Can not find "open file location" after right clicking?Sorry, that's on the Mac.

Click on "SHOW in Windows Explorer"Thanks
Finally getting there.having located Show in Windows Explorer opns computer-local disk (c:)-users-admin-my music-iTunes-iTunes media-music -song, displays a bar click on this opens the song now plays using WMP (small screen) I then opened WMP and dragged the song to it from the bar but it went to the Unsaved List only. How can I save it to show permantly in WMP?
Right click the music file, go to Properties and click Change next to "Open With".I did so. There seems to be several places where i can see "open with WMP" and it goes to the unsaved list or c properties, Change/Windows, OK or drag and drop from "show in Windows Explorer and from there drag and drop to the unsaved list
but it seems impossible to get it on to the WMP music library. WMP is the default setting for AUDIO files
I can play the music on the untitled play list but the file doesnt stay there once I close down the computer. Hope I have described this correctly?
Maybe it would be simpler to build up a library and then burn to a disk etc?

Solve : Things to do with a Desktop but not a SmartPhone?

Answer»

Yes, there are some things best done with an plain old Desktop and not your smartphone. Of course you can't take your Desktop with you while you jog, but there are many cool things done better with the Desktop.
Here is the Geek 9pm list of
Things to with old desktop, not a Smart Phone

0. Turn on a relay to start an older coffee pot. Yeah, you have to add the relay. Get one a Radio Shack. wire it to the printer port.

1. Heat a small room in the spring and fall. The monitor contributes to the heat. OK, not very warm,. but takes off the chill. Cost is about the same as any electric heater.

2. Play old DOS games without emulation. They run at the right speed, correct graphics and are still are as much fun as ever. Configuration is easy. Just boot from a DOS diskette.

3. Charge several USB device all at once. An old Desktop will have four free USB ports that can change a camera, a iPod, you GPS and even your tablet. Each port allows 500 ma.

4. Be a huge Digital clock visible from a distance. You can even choose a tradition clock with hands and Numbers. Works as a night light too. Much, much brighter that any smartphone.

5. Write letters and Emilia with a real keyboard. All old PCs come with excellent
keyboards that are often better than NEW ones. Very nice touch. Letters are easy to see.

This is very loosely based on the article by

By Eric Dahl, PCW Print
20 Things You Didn't Know Your PC Could Do
http://www.pcworld.com/article/108720/article.html

What do you do with your old Desktop?

I use MS Office (Word, Excel, Access) a lot, do email, browse the web, occasional Skype, occasionally update some web pages for a local non-profit website, MANAGE digital photos,, etc., all of which I can't imagine doing on a SmartPhone. Make a scene at starbucks:
http://www.ucbcomedy.com/videos/play/1015/prank-mobile-desktop

Was trying to find the pic of the guy walking using his desktop constructed of two 2x4's resting on each shoulder, with some padding, with desktop monitor and keyboard duct taped in front of him and tower and UPS on his back to counter balance. Google search was a fail for that gag pic that I saw like 10 years ago.

Quote

1. Heat a small room in the spring and fall. The monitor contributes to the heat. OK, not very warm,. but takes off the chill. Cost is about the same as any electric heater.

Our computers helped heat our bedroom this winter. Had 3 to 5 systems Folding (crunching numbers) at a time off and on in bedroom and it brought temp up about 5 degrees from rest of HOME. Best of all I heated bedroom through winter safer than a space heater with around the same power consumption, and also the data crunching went to a good cause!

Energy consumption & Heat would have been greater if I had CRT's, but I have 4 flat screens, dual displays for self with 1 of the 2 HOOKED up to a 4-port KVM with the 3rd on my wifes computer, and 4th connected to my wifes 2nd DVI port a 24" mounted on wall for watching netflix etc with bluetooth keyboard/mouse with luxury of the comfort of a warm bed. Got rid of all my CRTs about 8 years ago, and glad I did to get rid of the small amount of x-rays and loss of desktop space in addition to slightly lower power bill.

Are those valid arguments?I officially give up...you win."Some" things that can be done with a desktop but not a smartphone? Change that to things that can be done "better" or "more easily" (which is also included in your original post) and that list becomes almost endless. Solve : Dell Blames Windows 8 for Poor Sales.?

Answer»
According to an article in the new Computerworld magazine,
somebody at Dell computer company says that Windows 8 is the cause of slow sales of personal computers. Somebody has made that kind of statement before, and this would indicate there is some kind of talk ceiling inside the company that Windows 8 is not what they WANTED it to be.
My guess is they wanted something so innovative that people would be willing to buy new hardware to get a copy of the new software. Well, that's not happening. Or even if it is happening, it's not enough to boost up lagging sales.
Of course there's always some kind of an expert that has an opinion about everything. One such expert predicts that sales will keep falling as much by 20% for the next five years. How can he know what's going to HAPPEN in the next five years? Did he mean 20% after five years or did he mean 20% per year.

If the latter, Dell and some other companies might as well switch over to some other kind of technology maybe they could come up with a new device for sharpening kitchen knives and sell it on TV with a money back guarantee. They more than likely would make money that way rather than trying to sell people personal computers they don't want. But a better way to sharpening kitchen knives would be more innovative than a PC that looks like it was supposed to be a smart phone but got too fat.

I would've posted this in computer news, but this is more about speculation and conjecture. However, real computer news, is not like that.

Links:
Dell computer company blames poor sales on Windows 8.
http://bigstory.ap.org/article/research-firm-pc-sales-plunge-windows-8-flops
But MS flips the story over.
http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Microsoft-PC-Windows-8-Sales,20720.html
If newer computers were sold with a license key OS version option such as Windows 7 64bit / Windows 8 64 bit dual key like systems of the past, i think they would have better sales for all brands, as well as any slump in sales may be just because people dont need a new system and can get by with their already existing computers, or due to the fact that more people are building their own these days trough Tiger Direct, Newegg, and other sources for hardware.

I know that I have saved lots of money building my own, and have only bought 4 computers brand new in the last 20 years. Out of curiosity the one day i tested my 11 year old motherboard against modern computing needs, a Pentium 4 2 Ghz with 1GB RAM running Windows XP Pro SP3, with integrated Intel 845GL graphics ( 64mb shared memory).

It was able to play Netflix over the web on lowest 360 settings, with very little noticable lag when viewing. Audio quality was perfect. I also tested it for Facebook and all the Flash apps etc worked, although some games such as the casino game with slot machine dials had the audio complete before the dials got done spinning etc. It was playable, although it was struggling with Flash Games. Web surfing was no problems at all with Firefox. The only problem this 11 year old motherboard had for modern use was video games. Its older slower single-core 2Ghz CPU and integrated Intel 845GL graphics with 64MB shared memory was no match for the majority of games purchased off the SHELF unless you look at the Walmart $10 game titles that are not complicated in graphics and code execution and support Pentium III 800Mhz or faster system with 64MB video memory such as puzzle games and sim type games.

As far as multi OS choice systems, I have seen the dual keys on Toshiba laptops, and HP Compaq's for Business class which came with Windows 98/ Windows 2000, as well as Windows 2000 Pro / Windows XP Pro, as well as Windows XP Home / Windows Vista back when so many people as well as businesses were rejecting Vista.

If they gave customers a choice of Windows 7 or Windows 8 without any additional cost, you would have way more happy people out there. Those who want 8 will be happy with 8 and those who want 7 with start menu will be happy with 7.

Whether its Windows 7 or Windows 8, Microsoft should allow for this downgrade and not care if a customer wants 7 or 8 as long as they are getting their revenue in per computer sold license fee. But I have this strong feeling that they have such pride in Windows 8 as well as want to collect on those who hate it, that they are almost forcing people to go the route of Windows 8 if you buy new computers, and if you have a problem with it... give us more money for 7!!! Which makes them more money than giving free downgrades to Windows 7 as they have in the past for some 98, 2000, XP, and Vista PC's.

Has anyone seen a Windows 7 / Windows 8 dual license key label affixed to any new computers yet, I havent? This just in::

Understanding Downgrade Rights.

MS already provides downgrade rights for Windows 8. I don't think they actually had a downgrade 'program' of sorts until Vista.

Of note: the downgrade rights don't mean you are able to say, dual-boot with win8 and win7. If you downgrade, it's basically the same software license. Quote
don't mean you are able to say, dual-boot
No, dual boot is not using both versions at the same time.

Now if you could get a duel-core CPU to run two OS at the same time...
Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 06, 2013, 01:49:38 AM
No, dual boot is not using both versions at the same time.
That doesn't matter. if you get a Windows 8 License, and downgrade it to Windows 7, it is a Windows 7 license, and you are no longer "licensed" to use Windows 8 with the original key unless you entirely remove the Windows 7 license. You are trying to ignore the terms right in the EULA, which don't say anything about running the software and everything about installations of the software.

BC, I see your point.
BTW: Thee are statistics out there that show some people are still buying Windows XP. I have no explanation for that. Maybe it is time for MS to stop this whole business of dumping an OS after 12 years.
Meanwhile, Windows 8 sales are still below expectations.

No they aren't. The article you linked points to dropped prices to encourage tablet makers to use Windows 8.
Windows 8 Sales are about par with Windows 7 sales in the same period, and that is excluding RT.
BC, who can you believe?
One source says MS was disappointed. Another says the Windows 8 release now has run MS profits up 19%. Maybe they wanted 25% instead?
And thee is the lame Blame thing. Blame who for what?

Thee are Critics who hate Win 8 and a near equal number that love it. This post was about recent report of Dell making it a scapegoat to explain poor sales of Dell computers. One thing for sure; Dell sales are poor. And MS is making money.

It should be noted that in MS's sales figures it includes sold and future liscenses for Win8 from builders and re-sellers...so the fact remains there's alot of unsold hardware out there that was counted in those #'s...
By all means they did not want to hurt their Brand by posting dissapointing sales figures...that'll rapidly kill the release of any new product/app.
So take it for what's it worth.Quote from: Geek-9pm on June 07, 2013, 11:25:12 AM
BC, who can you believe?
Neither of them. I never read 'tech news' for this very reason. They suffer from two problems: terrible conflation and statistics skew. One Columnist could point at sales statistics and say Win8 (or any software product) is a success, whereas a detractor can point at those same statistics and say it's a failure. This is exactly what you see with win8 sales figures, and it's hard not to notice that the detractors are always Linux or Apple advocates (eg. "MS Haters") and the people saying it's a success are in some ways "MS Shills".

What I find annoying on both counts is that most of these columnists seem to focus on how much Windows 8 has sold, how popular it is, etc. while completely ignoring any of the actual merits of the software. And when they do look at it, it's so shallow they may as well just show a screenshot of Windows 8.1 and say "the start menu is coming back" (oh, right, that's what they did).

The POPULARITY of a piece of software is not a direct reflection of it's quality, it's a function of that quality and marketing. A great product that is marketed terribly probably isn't going to be popular, and a terrible product that is exceptionally marketed can easily take over. Windows Vista is a example of the former, and Windows 7 is an example of the Latter; they are practically identical, but their different marketing approaches completely flip-flopped public opinion. Windows Vista was said- in marketing- to be "the greatest Windows yet" and this is confrontational to those using XP; They already became defensive when using it, looking for issues and so forth. Windows 7 was marketed as "we fixed it" (essentially) but all they really fixed was not saying it was the greatest version yet.

The corollary to this is often that Popularity of some products (such as of course Windows) is inversely proportional to how good it is, which is unsurprisingly the argument posited by Linux or Apple Advocates. This is equally fallacious. Objectively considering UI design, usability, stability, and so forth requires taking all information and pairing it with actual experience and observations to come to a conclusion.

One of the more interesting Windows 8 conversations I've had involved UEFI. Nobody really knows squat about UEFI- myself included- but they seem apt to draw their conclusions based on the first google result. Basing your opinion on what is effectively a pagerank is the same as basing it on popular opinion. When I cited articles that refuted these facts with observations and information on the actual implementation, I was told those articles were by a "entity that pandered to Microsoft". Even if that is the case, if what they presented was not fact, it would be fairly easy to refute; Since it was backed up by several hardware manufacturer specifications and other documents on the subject, I find it hard to believe that the dismissal is nothing but a knee-jerk reaction. Do I know much about UEFI? No, of course not. I don't have a system that has it so I have to rely on other sources. But I won't believe the words of a Linux advocate telling me UEFI is a huge conspiracy to prevent the inevitable rise of Linux as the bestest system ever anymore than I would believe that it wasn't at least sanctioned by MS themselves.

That is one of the reasons why I decided to put Windows 8 on my laptop. I was originally skeptical. I first installed the RTM release in early August. (I was provided with an internal download before it even appeared on MSDN or became publically available in Oct.) There were some issues, but they amounted to nothing more than minor annoyances. In particular I had long adapted to never use the start menu anyway, instead using the windows key, typing in a query, and running one of the results. Windows 8 preserved this so my interaction didn't change. I cannot even name any of the original annoyances I had with the system, come to think of it. The thing that sold me was the Copy/Move dialog.

of course, that is just my experience, but from where I'm standing, basing an opinion on more than a few articles- and actually using the system for an extended period- enough to get past the initial hurdles- is what it is all about. When I first started programming with C#, every corner I turned I was able to find some 'flaw' that I considered to be huge. And on more than one occasion, I even considered giving up and going back to VB6. This is analogous to how many of the people I've found claiming that "they tried it but they hated it" for Windows 8 did. They gave up when they started to have adjustment issues. This is understandable. It can be frustrating, and this is only exacerbated by the fact that we've had the Start Menu paradigm for so long. For my uses, I've found the start menu almost unnecessary since Vista. I never click it, I never use anything except for search, which works pretty much the same in Windows 8. To me, the start menu was vestigial, like Program Manager in 95. There to ease people's transition to the new method (which revolved around search). This is also why the "All Programs" Menu in Vista and 7 is pretty much garbage.

Solve : Blocking Website Using Notepad?

Answer»

Hi,
I have a teenage daughter who has become curious about male/female relationships, so she has been visiting sites (if you know what I mean). I am trying to block these sites using notepad, but it seems it isn't working. Could you please help me resolve the problem.
I have Windows 7 ( )
This is what I have on my notepad

# Copyright (c) 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself.
#127.0.0.1 localhost
#::1 localhost
127.0.0.1 *.www.thetaoofbadass.com
127.0.0.1 *.www.perfectgirls.net
127.0.0.1 *.www.redtube.com
127.0.0.1 *.www.shufuni.com

I have tried it with/without the asterisk and dot.
My apologies if this is in the wrong location. All the Info you Need...This may help some.
Hosts file ignored, windows 7 64 bit, firefox
The expert suggests you rename the original HOSTS file. Then create a one-line HOSTS file with notepad, using something that has to work. Then test it with ping.
You can have more that on entry in the HOSTS file. Just add more lines.

Why don't you try respecting your daughter's right to find out about relationships? And trusting her? Just asking.

Really? Doing relationships over the internet has to be one of the most hazardous things a young PERSON could ever do. Relationships should begin in an environment where people can be seen for what they really are.

Those sites aren't EXACTLY a good role model for any kind of relationship.

As a teenager, I can tell you honestly that if you try to use some form of technology to prevent your daughter from doing something, she will get around it. Skip the middleman and resolve the problem at the source. Talk to your daughter, explain what's what about REAL relationships, and explain that sites like those do not reflect any kind of reality.

My daughter isn't old enough to have that right or understand. Trust is a 2 way street. She needs to be guided with the correct information, not going on some sleezy demeaning website to find out about sex. That's why, just answering your question.Quote from: Helpmeh on June 06, 2013, 09:46:35 PM

Thank you for the advice, but I was once a teenager as well and just because I am blocking the sites, doesn't mean that I haven't talked to her about it or plan on having additional talks. I am blocking sites, because many of these sites carry virus and her vulnerability can effect our computers as well as give her the wrong ideas about relationships. I don't want to spend all day trying to fix another computer.

Please, unless you are going to help me with my question on how to block these sites, don't give me advice on how to raise my daughter. She has a fantastic mom already. Thanks again for all the information.Quote from: patio on June 06, 2013, 02:30:20 PM

I did this too, but when I enter the websites address they still come up. Is there anything else that I can do?How did you save/name the hosts file after the additions to it ? ?Your syntax is incorrect.

127.0.0.1 *.www.thetaoofbadass.com

should be

127.0.0.1 thetaoofbadass.com

Hope this helps.

Edit: sorry! Just saw you've already tried it without the asterisk and dot.It should still be retried...Quote from: patio on June 07, 2013, 09:50:55 AM
It should still be retried...
Yes. The OP He should not use the original HOTS.
A new file named HOTS must be created with Notepad.
It must be saved as HOSTS, not HOTS.TXT and this can be hard to do if visible extensions are off.
Don't use EITHER www or Http:// in DOMAIN name.
OP must first test with a well-know site. If that fails, then we need to start an investigation. (Some AV programs take over control of HOSTS.)

Correct...the www is not needed.
May be the issue right there...

Solve : Sorting clips on a DVD?

Answer»

I have burned a SERIES of video clips, which I downloaded from my camcorder, to a DVD (in a USB format) and, although I sort the clips in date order, they are replayed in alphabetical order (of the title of each clip).
I would like them to be played in date order.
Can anyone help please?
This happens whether I play them in Windows Media player or in VLC.
Thank you. You're going to get a lot of spam if your user name is also your e-mail address.

Can you rename the clips in order as -

01 blah blah
02 something
03 something else

etc etc

If they are renamed with the date (either as the filename or at the beginning) in yyyy-mm-dd format with (if necessary) a sub number if there are some with the same date, they will sort in date order in the player's playlist.

2013-05-01-01 Tampa beach.xxx
2013-05-01-02 Alligator museum.xxx
2013-05-02-01 Disney World.xxx

Make a playlist. The playlist stays on the PC and takes very little space.

I just checked in a mirror, and I don't have "Stupid"* tattooed on my forehead. I don't expect they can be renamed. Since DVD-R or DVD+R disks cost around US $0.35 at Wal-Mart if you buy a 100-pack, I imagine that making the compilation again by burning another disk HOLDING a set of renamed files will not exactly break the OP's bank.

Solve : One Dozen free e-mail services?

You don't have to stick to just one e-mail
Here are a dozen free services.
1) aol.com
2) hushmail.com
3) gmail.com
4) inbox.com
5) gmx.com
6) live.com
7) lycos.com
mail.com
9) outlook.com
10) yahoo.com
11) Zoho.com
12) ausi.com

Alphabetical order.
Except for the one down under.
I view live.com and outlook.com as the same THING. Likewise, hotmail.com now equals Outlook.com.

By the way, ISP-provided email accounts could be added to this list. And, keep in MIND, some ISPs allow more than one email account. Personally I used to use GMX and still do for certain older things, the web interface is pretty good. Nowadays I use Google Apps so it uses my own domain but I can access my email through the regular Gmail interface which is great.

ISP provided email accounts also exist but I generally advise against using them as it SORT of ties you into an ISP as if you wish to switch to a different ISP you will also likely need to go through all the hassle of changing email address.Quote from: camerongray on June 03, 2013, 02:55:15 AM

That is something to consider. But, some ISPs do not close email accounts when a FORMER customer switches to another ISP. My mother was using AT&T DSL and then switched to Time Warner cable. This was over a year ago and the ATT email address still works. Many, not all, e-mails providers allow you to forward email or use an 'alias' e-mail. This is one thing to look for when selecting a permanent address for yourself.
The free e-mail companies have an FAQ section but do not provide direct customer service for free accounts. If you are a business user, consider paying for extra service. The commercial users help support the cost of the free service.

Solve : Monitor experts: I need your help choosing the right monitor for graphic design?

Answer» HI all monitor experts. I NEED your help choosing the right PC monitor for my needs as I’m starting to go research-crazy .

I’m looking for a monitor that I can use for making professional graphic print designs for a small poster business. The color accuracy therefore of course needs to be good. However, as my budget is tight, I would prefer to keep the price below around 1.100 dollars (1.000 euro). Furthermore: I probably won’t be needing the ADOBE RGB color profile for at least the first couple of years as the PROGRAMS I’m using to make my designs in use the sRGB color profile and the company who is printing my designs wants designs uploaded in sRGB as well. However, for future purposes, I’m thinking it’s not a bad idea to have a monitor with a decent Adobe RGB range as well, but an excellent sRGB range is my number 1 priority.
I have FOUND some interesting candidates within my budget, but as expected in that price range none of them are of course perfect all-round. I would therefore really appreciate it if you could help me figure out which ones are the best for my needs:

A) Dell UltraSharp U2720Q: A 10-bit monitor (a few sites say it's only: 8-bit + FRC dithering) with 99 % sRGB and 89 % Adobe RGB. Delta E less than 2, or B) BenQ PD3200U: A 10-bit monitor (a few say it's only: 8-bit + FRC dithering) with 100 % sRGB but only 73 % Adobe RGB. Delta E less than 3, or C) Viewsonic VP2785-4K: An 8-bit plus FRC to 10-bit monitor with 100 % sRGB and 99 % Adobe RGB plus 75,06 % NTSC. Delta E less than 2. Hardware Color Calibration.
All three monitors have 4 K and IPS panel.

I can’t figure out if I should go with B (BenQ PD3200U) because it has 100 % sRGB and that’s the color profile I will primarily be using (plus it according to most webpages has a true 10-bit as opposed to C), or if it would be stupid and too short-sighted to purchase it because its Adobe RGB range is rather narrow and I therefore should go with A (Dell UltraSharp U2720Q) that has a much higher Adobe RGB, although it’s sRGB is “only” 99 %. How big of a difference does that one percent make? OR if C (Viewsonic VP2785-4K) is in fact the smartest choice because it has wider gamut all around although it’s only an 8-bit plus FRC to 10-bit monitor. What I understand from the research I have been doing; true 10 bit is better than 8-bit plus FRC, but I can’t figure out if the print results will still be better with this 8-bit FRC because the monitor’s color gamut is that much better. Also, I don’t even know how to be sure that the others are true 10-bit as I found a few pages that said they are also only 8-bit FRC as well. (If you know any credible webpages to look for monitor specs I would love to know). Viewsonic VP2785-4K is also the only one where I can find data about the color calibration, and it should be hardware which I understand is much better than software?
Which monitor would you choose if you were in my shoes?

One last question: Is it important to have a laptop with the same color gamut specs as one’s monitor? E.g., if one is having a laptop with only 88 percent sRGB color space and no Adobe RGB color space and a monitor with full sRGB as well as Adobe RGB, will the monitor attached to the laptop still be able to show both the sRGB and the Adobe RGB gamut? And will it be able to show its full percent?

Thank you so much for taking the time to read my lengthy post! I really appreciate it

I ask the players about it and they do not seem to be having the same trouble. Imessed with enable the java and it seem diff for a short time ,then back to a mess. HELP PLEASE! I like the pool game. ThanksNow I'm really confused because I just came from the site to CHECK 4 a reply and before I could finish the last game the darn thing began to play as normal as if nothing is or was wrong all the way to the last ball. I made no changes, so I'm really curious how and why the BEHAVOIR changed at that time. I know the obvious would be website malfunction, but I asked each player about their own screen behavior and no one else was having any trouble at all. This did happen exactly the same way only hours after the first symptoms and fell apart the very next game ,staying that way up to just minutes ago. I will now go check to see about my ghost.

But I have not checked the others. I will wait for Patio check it out.
I've been buying songs from Amazon for a long time. I only noticed all the free songs in the LAST several months, maybe they have always been there and I just didn't notice them, but they offer a lot of free songs now. It's mostly new groups trying to get noticed.

If it's on Amazon I'm positive it's completely legal for those songs. Other sites, it is hit and miss.Geek-9pm, do you imagine it is necessarily illegal to give stuff away? My daily newspaper gives away DVDs, music CDs, offers free downloads etc. That site you linked to is a page of links to COPYRIGHT free material.

Solve : Laptop turns off when alt tabbed?

Answer»

hi my laptop keeps turning off whenever i alt tab from a game. I also NOTICE my laptop makes a louder than usual noise from the game and it will never stop until i alt tab, thus making my laptop turn off. My temperatures are fine and laptop does not get too hot. I NEED help please!Even though temperatures are fine and laptop does not get too hot, it most likely is warming up when playing the game and your fan is simply coming on or RUNNING FASTER to keep temps from getting too high. Put your and near the air circulation vent(s) and put your ear close to the vent when you hear the noise. Surely, you can verify the noise is from the fan.

Does alt/tab work correctly when SWITCHING between apps other than the game? alt tab does not work while i am playing a game. It doesnt matter if i am switching to desktop or just a web page, the laptop will always shut off. Also I forgot to mention that if i exit the game, the laptop shuts down. The game i am talking about is WoW. As for the loud noise i was talking about earlier, i meant the fan is so loud whether im in a populated place in WoW or if i exit to the login screen, the fan still makes the SAME loud noises. So, it makes the all level of noise ALL the time, regardless of what you're doing, right? Has the computer always done this, ever since it was new? Have you opened Task Manager and monitored CPU usage to see whether a particular application is consuming is hogging resources? How old is your computer? Have you ever cleaned dust out of the inside? Solve : Weirdest computer problem(s) you've ever had??

Answer»

Just curious to see what oddball issues other people have run into.

One of my weirdest ones has to be a system that wouldn't shut down. Well, Windows would shut down, but the system stayed running, and as soon as you connected power to it, the fans would spin, drives would spin up, but the system wouldn't actually start until you hit the power button. If you shut it down, the screen would go off, the graphics card fan would stop spinning, but the fans stayed on. Turned out it was a short in the front panel card reader, connected via USB. Unplugged that after much head scratching and changing of other COMPONENTS and it was fine. Very odd.

A fairly common issue was the reset switches in a certain case causing problems. They didn't randomly reset the PC, or make it unable to power on, or anything like that - they caused instability when the system was overclocked, or random graphical corruption. Very bizarre and I still don't know how the reset switch could affect that, but it most definitely was the switch as unplugging it made the previously unstable system stable at the overclocked speed, and the graphics were now fine. Happened a few times, only ever on one model of case.Probably when I built my current one, you would turn it on and it would sort of get stuck in a loop before posting - The numbers on the 7 segment display would count up, there would be a faint click sound (Internal Speaker?) and they would start counting again. It would do this several times until it would finally beep and POST. This was happening both before and after I overclocked it so I knew it wasn't that. What got more annoying is after overclocking it, if I hit the reset button while it was "looping" (Which sometimes helped) it would reset my overclock which was a real pain. Updating the BIOS solved this and I've never had a problem since!Fairly common with Gigabyte boards on some BIOS versions, or with certain settings, or certain hardware combinations, or...in fact, I'll just say that cold boot issues are common on Gigabyte boards.
That's not to say they're bad boards, it just seems to be a relatively common problem/quirk across several product lines - I myself have experienced it on X58, H55, P55, H61, P67, and Z68 boards at various times.
I got very familiar with different BIOS versions and beta versions as some were terrible for it and others reduced the occurrence of the issue significantly. This thread was invaluable for having the different versions for each board all in one place - http://forums.tweaktown.com/gigabyte/28441-gigabyte-latest-beta-bios.html - along with station-drivers.com for updated or sometimes beta chipset drivers, MEI firmware and drivers, USB3 firmware and drivers, etc.Ahh, that makes sense, I was wondering how they didn't notice it during testing but that makes sense if it was down to certain hardware combinations.Sometimes it was down to overclock settings, sometimes down to the RAM or PSU. If I remember correctly there was one PSU (might have been the VX450 so we're going back a bit now) that was entirely incompatible with one Gigabyte board, it just wouldn't work.Weirdest would have to be one that happened a long time ago back in the days of dial up. I had a 386DX33Mhz at the time and a 14.4 modem that was internal and required jumpers for setting up the IRQ etc.

I got this computer in a drawing at my employer where they had a small stack of Dell and Gateway 2000 computers ranging from 286, 386, and 486 computers that worked and all were running Windows 3.11. We got to put our name in a coffee can and when your name was picked you got your pick of systems. My name was picked 3rd, and the 486's were the first to go as for others also knew what was faster from the slower systems. So I picked the 386DX33Mhz Gateway 2000 large desktop computer.

Got it home and installed the 14.4 modem out of my 286 into it, as well as added my Serial Mouse to COM1 DB9, COM2 DB9 had connected for a serial link to my older 286 to file transfer over serial port with a null cable which was way better than sneaker network with floppies. The 14.4 modem I set to COM3 IRQ4.

Now a savy computer guru already would see the problem before reading further..hint...hint

I'd connect to the internet AOL 2.5 at the time and everything was great while I was navigating on the web moving my mouse, but as soon as my mouse was not used for about 10 seconds I would get disconnected from the internet. So I reconnected to the internet and heard the modem noise of dialing and resync'ing and would be connected again until my mouse was not MOVED for longer than 10 seconds or so. So I didnt quite figure out why yet.... but figured ok I will keep wiggling my mouse and see if it stays connected...so I kept the pointer active and sure enough i wouldnt get disconnected, then I intentionally stopped wiggling it and got disconnected.

So I was about 19 years old at the time and didnt yet have the knowledge that I have today and so AOL had chat rooms and so I went into one that was computer or tech related. I then had to make sure I wiggled my mouse frequently to not get disconnected and posted a response for help in the chat room. I said this makes no sense to me, but "WHY DO I NEED TO KEEP MOVING MY MOUSE TO NOT GET DISCONNECTED FROM THE INTERNET?"

A computer savy person in there which was like sinbad0672 replied asking for computer info. I shared that it was a Gateway 2000 with a Intel 386 DX 33 Mhz CPU and 12MB RAM, running Windows 3.11 on a Conner 120MB hard drive, and I have a Mouse on COM1, a null cable on COM2 for a serial file transfer that I use between 2 computers, and 14.4 modem and said its set to Com 3 IRQ4.

While wiggling the mouse in a circular pattern about every 5 seconds pausing to type and wiggle to maintain the connection, the person responded back stating I cant have my Modem on COM3 because COM1 and COM3 share IRQ4!!!!!!

So the fix was to set the jumpers on modem to COM4 IRQ3, and do away with my serial transfer setup on COM2 since it would conflict with the modem on COM4 since COM2 and COM4 share IRQ3

Whalla system was running healthy and no longer had to wiggle mouse to keep the internet connection!!! System Board failure (presumably) on my ancient Thinkpad 755CDV. It ran PC-DOS 7.0 and Windows 3.1. I hadn't used it in a very long time.
It had a power-on password, which I still remembered, but I couldn't enter it in; when I pressed some keys, two "password characters" would appear; others wouldn't display anything. One in every 10 or so boots I could get it to work properly, seemed to work better if I used an external keyboard.

(First thing I did once I got back in was disable that power-on password. An interesting thing since that is the same password it had since it was purchased in 1994).

Once I booted DOS, however- it hung while loading one of any number of drivers. Now, bear in mind that this had worked admirably for a very long time. My first suspect was simple file corruption, so I booted into DOS using "safe mode" (eg. skip Autoexec.bat and config.sys with F5).

This time, before showing the prompt, it said "Divide Error" and halted.

I had no idea what was going on. So I booted to a clean DOS floppy- maybe command.com on the hard disk got corrupted.

Same Error.

I eventually figured it out, or at least narrowed it down to a System Board failure. Data would be read but get corrupted while travelling over the system bus in unforeseeable ways; the result was that, when it was more or less "working" and responding to commands, I could run an FC on two identical files and get them to claim they were different, copy a file and then compare the copy to the original and have it claim those were different. I figured it could also be memory, but was able to eliminate that when I bought a 20$ for parts model of the same laptop and used it's memory with the same result.

Also, the computer's Easy-Setup said there was a System Board malfunction so I figure that sorted it.

I'm guessing the Battery Leakage I had observed a few months earlier had somehow managed to get to the System Board and caused problems.

What I found most interesting is that it was simply indeterminate; one boot will cause my to be unable to type anything at all, another will double letters, another will have no foreseeable pattern; etc.

Eventually it started hanging right at the Memory count display and screaming a constant beep, which no surprise according to the manual was indicative of a System Board Failure too.

This time, before showing the prompt, it said "Divide Error" and halted.

My first 486 SX (SX=SUCKS CPU) 25Mhz gave me this same "Divide Error". I bought this system in 1995 for too much money thinking I was going to be able to fix it. Basically I agreed to $100 for it with monitor, printer, software, etc. And I ended up buying a 1985 Honda Accord for $50 and giving my friend who i owed $100 for this computer the Honda Accord as payment vs cash. He needed wheels and it worked out perfect. I bought the Honda blindly from another friends neighbors son as a running vehicle and figured if it runs and drives doesnt leak fluids or burn oil for $50, sure I'll buy it. But I didnt know that the old lady who owned it and went into a elderly home chain smoked in it and so it was an ash tray on wheels with grey INTERIOR stained with nicotine and tar etc and many many cigarette burns to the seats and carpet etc with an ash tray that was still heaped over with butts and ash was everywhere coated on the dash, carpet, etc, and it had 219,000 miles and needed lots of TLC to make it to 220,000. My friend saw this car and was bragging about how he wished that he could afford a vehicle, but he was grunge and had dread locks with drug rug clothing and sandles etc and unshaved etc, and various facial piercings in ears, eyebrow, nose, botton lip etc, plus there was no way he would be able to pass drug testing with all the grass and occasional other explorative substances like acid etc, so he had a hard time getting jobs. He also smoked and also smoked other stuff and so this ash tray on wheels was an ok vehicle for him. At the time I owned 3 other vehicles ( 1977 Volare, 1983 Ford Ranger, and 1985 Mercury Capri 5.0 ) and this was my 4th which I didnt need and was going to sell to try to make some money, but quickly realized it was worth about $50 to a junk yard and I'd break even. So I said I tell you what... what if I gave you this car with a bill of sale for $100 and we are even on the computer deal. His eyes lit up and he was like SWEET!!!! I warned him that it likely needed some work to pass inspection as it was a worn vehicle that needed a mechanics touch. Surprisingly he found a garage to lick-n-stick an inspection sticker on it and he packed some friends into it and they drove it out to a Phish concert in upstate NY about 400 miles round trip and both the CAR and THEM survived the trip. He got back from the trip and thanked me for the wheels as for without the car attending that event would never have happened and whatever trip he went on at the concert in addition to the driving trip to the concert wouldnt have happened as well. So I guess to him it was sort of like a woodstock type of once in a lifetime event to him, that thanks to me giving him that car he was able to attend.

Getting back to the computer that I got off him that his parents bought new a few years prior...

I had plenty of extra parts to troubleshoot with and also determined it to be main board issue. Fortunately a friend at work at Allen-Bradley just upgraded to a Pentium 75Mhz and was looking for a home for his 486DX33Mhz motherboard with 8MB RAM for just $40, and so I bought that up, and was able to YANK the 8MB of good RAM out of this 486SX25 and pair that up with the other 8MB with 4MB 72-pin DIMM sticks in the 4 slots to get 16MB RAM, yanked the 486SUCKS board out of the desktop case and installed the motherboard with the DX that was way better than the SX would have ever been!!! Then I upgraded to Windows 95 and surprisingly had very few BSOD with Win 95 on that 486DX33Mhz with 16MB RAM and 2x SONY CD-ROM which had the special ATAPI CD-ROM Controller/Audio Sound Card board that plugged into the 16-bit ISA slot. And was able to game on it with the 4MB of video RAM on the Trident 16-bit ISA video card that came with the 486SX as well as I now had a SuperVGA 15" monitor with 800x600 resolution vs my prior 1989 date code Dell Monitor that was regular VGA 640x480 and was starting to blur from age with heavy use in which i got it for free at company old computer hardware giveaway when i got my 386DX33 Gateway 2000.

At the time it bothered me that I was an ET and unable to diagnose the exact cause of the Divide Error on this board. But without schematics and the right equipment it wasnt going to happen. My oscilloscope at the time was way too old and no features to chase signals with the old Tube Heathkit Oscilloscope that I got for $5 at a yard sale. But I saved the jumpers off this motherboard as the final parts that could be used on other systems worked on etc, and tossed the motherboard into the PCB recycle at work after getting the ok to throw this motherboard in with the NORMAL company electronic waste for proper disposal.

So my first 486 computer ended up costing me $90 in 1995 ( $50 Car deal to offset a $100 complete but malfunctioning computer system debt + $40 for motherboard from my other friend back when I was only making $8.75 an hour and living on my own) And I was able to buy the Windows 95 Upgrade edition for $80 to have Win 95 vs Win 3.11 and this was back when computers were like $1000+ new and I had a Windows 95 system that ran well on Windows 95 for just $170

Solve : Cannot boot HP dv6500 Pavailion Laptop?

Answer»

When I turn the laptop on, it shows the HP logo for a few seconds and then the screen goes blank. I have tried F8 to try to boot in safe mode but noting happens. I do not have the Vista disks as the computer was given to me. Is there a site where I can obtain a RECOVER disk or boot disk of that is what I need. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you. Has this computer worked SINCE it was given to you?

Do you KNOW whether it has a recovery partition on the hard drive? Normally, it would have this unless you or the previous owner deleted or erased that partition. The recovery partition was most likely designated drive D when viewed in Computer. I know the recovery partition can be run on some HP computers by hitting F11 during startup. Try that.

If that does not work, VISIT HP website to get a phone # to call for support. Call them and request a recovery disc (DVD) for your laptop. They will charge a fee but the cost, with shipping, will probably be $15 - $20. That's a much lower cost than having to buy the OS on the retail market. Thanks for replying. The previous owner doesn't have the experience to change the partitions and he purchased it new. The laptop has worked well until about a week AGO. I will try f11. If that doesn't work I will contact HP. Thank you.

Solve : Advice and point of view Vistaprint? Yes or no ??

Answer»

Hello,

I have created a company and need to do some things : visit cards, leaflets, booklets and some roll-up. I would like to know what's your opinion about Vistaprint and if someone has had any PROBLEMS with them, I already know that they have good propositions and good prices. I'd check out this link for what people think of vistaprint. I used them for business cards and magnets on 3 occasions as well as my wife also got business cards for her business.

I have no complaints Price and quality as well as how fast I got them SEEMED fair.Used them for business. Good service. I ordered once to Vistaprint and all went well, but when you're looking for something a little bit different and customized (exclusive), they don't have many choices at Vistaprint. A company that i can RECOMMEND for you is JMwebs, http://www.jmwebs.net/ , I use to work with them actually. The most important difference is the fact that they're designers and they customize everything. The quality of their products is really better than others and moreover, you can ask what you want, they'll always propose you something.
About the price, you'll SEE that there's no pretty MUCH difference, for some orders, prices are the same. It depends on the quality that you wish to put in your products. Good Luck.

Candidate for quote of the MONTH. I would like to see a OS like that in .hack but, the first thing would be to flow chart your process. Learn a language like Java or some form of C. Coffee or Tea and make sure to have some Aleve near by and plenty of failures This point I want to make is that one does not have to duplicate what others have already done. It depends on your objective. And your timeline.
If you want a file serve, use Linux code. But if you are working with model boats, a very different OS would make sense.

Some years AGO an astronomer want to use small computers available at that time. He invented an language and OS now called FORTH.

An there are other OS that are different that anything else out there
Another:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pick_operating_systemI never heard of that This is really silly on many levels...

As noble as it sounds the objective of writing a BRAND spankin new OS from the ground up is even given the great group of minds here an insurmountable task in and of itself...
Secondly while intentions may be good on how to go about doing so advisers have never attempted nor probably won't do so in the near future...
Thirdly...it's now turned into an esoteric discussion of how one should go about it...as it usually does here instead of what it would actually take resource wise to accomplish such a lofty goal...

That being said i'm by no means trying to discourage the OP...however he hasn't been back for a Month. This is all true. However, I think we showed it isnt easy to do something like that. Probably gave up on itQuote from: BC_Programmer on March 22, 2013, 04:21:42 PM
So are you saying that you literally have no experience with any programming topic?
Well I could program, but that seems like you are using someone's else's work what I want to do that I never seemed able to was buy a new computer with nothing on the hard drive and by just typing letters, commands or different combination's of key STROKES start writing your own operating system.

Solve : Interesting CPU I found with letter designation for L2 Cache Difference?

Answer»

So in preparation for migration of my quadcore Athlon II x4 620 2.6Ghz to my new AM3+ motherboard which should arrive any day now with the 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD, I ordered a AMD Athlon X2 4450B AM2 off of ebay for $10 to stuff the cheapest but fastest CPU I could find to install into my old motherboard which is Biostar MCP6PB M2+ so that this motherboard could still be used while I am building up the new system. Received my CPU in the mail yesterday just 3 days after buying it, and performed the swap last night. The good thing is that the Windows 7 activation didnt break and the motherboard was happy with the transition from the 2.6Ghz quadcore Athlon socket AM3 to the 2.3Ghz dualcore Athlon socket AM2 CPU.

But what I found interesting was that there was a 4450B and a 4450E CPU, and they benchmark with scores that are non similar. The 4450B benchmarks with a passmark score of 1266 as seen here http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+Dual+Core+4450B and the 4450E benchmarks worse with a score of 1043 as shown here http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_lookup.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+Dual+Core+4450e and they perform way different just by the difference of the slower performance 4450E with 2x 512k L2 Cache and the other better performance 4450B with 1 x 1MB L2 Cache shared among 2 cores.

At newegg as a reference, specs can be compared.
AMD Athlon X2 4450E ( 2 x 512k L2 Cache )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103256

AMD Athlon X2 4450B ( 1MB L2 Cache )
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103263

Looking at the specs as to what B and E indicate, it appears that the B stands for "Business Class CPU", while there is no designation as to what E stands for but a guess is "Economical - Home User" The Value Build CPU = lesser performance @ lesser price tag.

On ebay among the many 4450E's this one was the only 4450B PRICED the same as the 4450E's, and I bought it thiking that maybe I would receive an incorrectly advertised CPU in which the seller probably has a 4450E for sale but accidentally listed it as a 4450B. Fortunately it is the 4450B better performing CPU and it runs quite well in my old motherboard for gaming.

To me I was kind of surprised that there was a letter attribute labelling the difference as for most of the AMD CPU's have always been totally different numbers or names to make the difference STAND out. And as far as INTEL goes the letter differences I have seen meant the difference between a Locked CPU (not intended for overclocking) and Unlocked CPU ( overclock at your own risk ), etc.

What really amazed me with these 2 CPUs with B and E is that its the same CPU but different L2 Cache configuration. Only other CPU's I have seen before like this are INTEL's in which a Pentium 4 2.8Ghz is 512k Cache and 533FSB and another Pentium 4 2.8Ghz HT 1MB Cache and 800FSB. In which the one without the HT stands out among the OTHERS with the HT hyperthreading designation.

My thoughts on these 4450E and 4450B is that engineering was testing to see whether 2 x 512k L2 Cache ( 512k per core ) would be better than 1 x 1MB L2 Cache shared among both cores and released both flavors of this same CPU model to cash in on both engineered and tested investments.

Anyone else seen similar like model CPUs with different Cache options before named the same with just a letter designation difference or is this a marketing ODDITY not to label it a 4450 and a 4455 ect?

That's fairly common with AMD actually. If you look at their older CPUs in particular, you'll see they have used the same model number (the Athlon X2 4800 is a good example) to refer to a lot of different CPUs, some of which use different sockets or cores. There was one that was actually a Phenom X4 in disguise, and you could potentially unlock its missing L2 cache, or even the disabled cores.
Intel tends not to reuse model numbers, back in the day you might have seen for example a Pentium 4 GHz on different sockets or with different cores, but then they moved the P4S onto model numbers like the Pentium 4 630 and that went away for good. Nowadays they all use different model numbers, with suffixes for example K indicating a derestricted multiplier, X indicating extreme edition (completely unlocked multiplier), T indicating low power, etc.

Solve : Open Ports, Closed Ports.?

Answer» So last night I was in MSN Games and playing with live people. The next day I played a game with computers. Later that day I went to play with live players but the game wouldn't load. I got the screen saying "balh, blah, blah... CLOSE." two days later I still can't get beyond this point when trying to play the game, yet I have no problem with the game against computers.

The advice given in online PRINTED help is to OPEN PORTS.

So my question is, if I could play the game 2 days ago, the ports must have been open, so why are they now closed. And that's why I'm in CH once again. What happened to close my ports. This is something that frequently happens in MSN, Yes, I'm still on cable dial up. And I think I have two firewalls in use.

Thanks all...
This is the site I always use for port forwarding if I'm unsure about the specific ports or firewalls in use.
Have a look there, and see if the required ports are open in your firewall.
If that doesn't help, please let us know which firewalls are in use and we'll see where we go from there.Hi Calum, before we begin, let me inform you of the fact that I am not a gomp geek. No way, no how. So we'll need to go step by step.

Second, would you please send me or post to me the tags for the way you did "This." I have been trying to recall it but can't. Thanks.

Also, before we do anything, would you please answer the question I asked in my OP. Why were my posts supposedly open at one point then closed less than a day later?

I need to know that before I can proceed. Sort of a crash course. Ports 101.

Btw, here is a link to the message about ports on MSN.

Second, would you please send me or post to me the tags for the way you did "This." I have been trying to recall it but can't. Thanks.

No problem, see the code below. First is a standard URL tag, second is the way I did that,.
Code: [Select][url]www.google.co.uk[/url]Code: [Select][url=www.google.co.uk]Google[/url]
So it's a standard URL tag for BBCode (the code used in forums for formatting, inserting links and images, etc) but you change the first url tag, add an = sign and then the URL you want to link to. The first one uses the tags to tell the forum that this is a link, and should be clickable. The second specifies the URL in the tag itself, and lets you use the text you want it to display. Hope this makes SENSE - I found it HELPS to try these out, by writing them in a post and clicking Preview, to see the result.

Also, before we do anything, would you please answer the question I asked in my OP. Why were my posts supposedly open at one point then closed less than a day later?

That's what I want to establish - first, whether they are open, which going through Portforward's excellent site will tell you as it will guide you to the port forwarding settings in your firewall. If they're already open, the problem lies elsewhere, it may not necessarily be related to ports at all. If they are closed, and you open them, you can then see if the issue reoccurs.

Hope this helps.Let me get this out of the way before we proceed.

is this correct? I tried it using my email but when I opened it nothing had changed. Everything was visible all the coding.

You can find the answer by clicking Here anytime.

I did one with the HTTP:// ALSO... it didn't work either. Maybe it'll be right in here. Btw, I'm off to bed. I'll REPLY in the light of day, God willing. TY...
Ooh, an ERROR... is that because I took off the http://? Let's see...

HERE

Okay, I needed to drop the WWW so how do I know when to use WWW. as opposed to http://...

Let me do breakfast and I'll get started on the ports issue. Thank you Calum.

If one was looking to find the latest spreadsheet made by lotus what would one be looking for?

JohnHTTP://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lotus_1-2-3
Looks like IBM is still selling it, but not at discount PER license: http://www-03.ibm.com/software/products/us/en/123

I haven't used Lotus 123 in years. When I was introduced to Excel 97 around 1999, I made the switch. I remember it being 1999 because I had a spreadsheet to keep track of how many I had saved of each of the 1999 release state quarters. Then used Office Excel 97,2000, 2003, and then left MS Office for Open Office which I currently use for spreadsheets. *Ended up cashing in the sack of state quarters in 2002 to buy my Pentium 4 SYSTEM new/open BOX from staples. I did go to the bank first though to get it converted to cash vs having the cashier counting up 2,076 quarters for the $519 COMPUTER.

OpenOffice can open old Lotus 123 files btw for free.

It's a program that you install on a COMPUTER/server and it ALLOW you to run the programs on other computers without installing it again. Say I have 20 computers and I have a program like Adobe Photoshop or MS Office that can only be installed on a limited number of computers without buying a new licence. Well the program I'm looking for allows the installation of software like MS Office on a HOST computer and all the other computers can run MS Office as well (you have to have this program installed on these other computers too). Hello all,

Hope everyone had a kick arse Thanksgiving.

Why on earth do you need such a LARGE screen for the stated purposes? Generally, the larger the size, the higher the cost. If you WANT to minimize the cost, you should be looking at, oh, 19" or so.
No, the TV is a seperate and came to me to post here as an after thought. Sorry for teh confusion and thanks for the suggestions.

MP.So, you want a TV that can be used with a computer, not just a regular monitor. Is that it?Again I rushed it and left things out. lol

No its a seperate GIFT and has noting to do with the laptop.

I just figured since the peeps here know so much about computers and pricing etc etc that TVs may also be sold at the same places. lol

So sorry for the confusion. Trying to do 20 things here at once.

Thanks,

Every flat screen TV made has a VGA input. Therefore any new TV can be used with a computer.Besides the sources mentioned above, check out WOOT. They have a different product on sale every day, so it can be hit or miss. Today's product is a toy helicopter, but I've sen great deals on flat screens and laptops. If you are looking for specific products it can be a matter of luck, but if your timing is right, you can get great deals.

Their prices are usually about half of what other sources offer. Thanks a MILL !

Never even heard of the place but going there now for a peek.

Solve : Motherboard upgrade with 8GB FREE Crucial RAM I bought?

Answer»

I was looking around to see what deals are offered this holiday weekend and 1 deal was too good to pass up. Bought myself a more modern motherboard to swap my CPU into and it came with a free stick of 8GB CRUCIAL DDR3 RAM.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=13-138-373&Tpk=n82e16813138373

This board solves limitations I had with the Biostar MCP6PB M2+ that I bought in 2009, which are more SATA ports, more RAM supported 16GB vs currently 4GB, as well as this board opens up an upgrade path past my current Athlon II x4 620 that is towards the limit of my current motherboard.

Cant WAIT to get this and open the box right away like christmas and build this up. Cant beat the price tag and good name brand memory!!!!

*Also just by pure luck, looking back after making the purchase it supports the 8-core CPU I wanted. So maybe I will buy myself the 8-core AMD FX-8350 for my birthday...LOL

CPU as shown here: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819113284

CPU Support for this motherboard maxes out at this CPU : http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/introduction.php?S_ID=627#cpu

I think with this 8-core in September as a birthday gift to myself, i will be good for another 4 years before another hardware upgrade, unless I max out at 16GB RAM and need more...

A variation of geometric expansion theory says -
you can not wait that long. That's the same motherboard that I'm going with I don't need the RAM stick THOUGH, as I already have GSkill Sniper Gaming Series 16GB 1866 DDR3 for it

COOL! I actually was looking into a Gigabyte motherboard... this one here before going with the Biostar bundle deal: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128504

Getting that free 8GB of RAM + it supporting the AMD FX-8350 4Ghz 8-core that I have been eyeballing for the last 6 months and the price tag of $72 after shipping added was the selling POINT to stick with Biostar. And I have bought their brand of boards for the last 7 years with no problems in quality.

I was originally looking at this Gigabyte brand motherboard and having to buy 8GB RAM and a price tag around $120, even though I wanted 16GB RAM but didnt want to pay around $150 on tight budget with my wife to be out of work for this summer and just living off of 1 salary since she works for school system so summers get tight with her not working.

I was also looking at skimping through an upgrade and using 2x 1GB DDR3 1333 sticks that I had from an upgrade to 4GB on another system that are laying around unused to get this Gigabyte AM3+ motherboard with the rebate for $47 and buy the RAM on another deal at some point to get a single 8GB stick or 2 sticks for 16GB RAM, then waiting for a good deal on a more powerful than Athlon II x4 620 AM3 CPU and this Gigabyte brand motherboard maxes out on the AMD FX-8300 3.3Ghz, and I want the 4Ghz /4.2Ghz Turbo 8-core Piledriver CPU.

Attached is comparisons between the CPU I have now and the one I want to upgrade to. I cant justify paying the the price tag of the Intel Core i7's, and this is the best bang for my buck, plus it should be plenty of CPU for the next 4 or 5 years, since I have been upgrading CPUs once every 4 years lately. The Athlon II x4 620 quadcore is still plenty of CPU to throw games at it to crunch, but I feel its time for a newer build to be my newest gaming rig build. I could probably get 2 or 3 more years of gaming out of it before it starts to become listed as minimum system requirements for intense games. I will likely have to replace my video card before then..LOL

I have been impressed with the performance/pricetag comparison since my AMD Athlon XP 2800+ which i USED from 2003 to 2008 when the original compaq motherboard started acting up and it wasnt PSU, RAM, CPU, or Video Card. AMD's have for the last 10 years been the better buy to have performance and not have to pay steep price tags for it such as Intel has almost always been more expensive. I bought a few Intel Pentium E5400's on a good deal for 2 builds, but find my way back to AMD. I also have switched to AMD for my videocards vs GeForce because they also have been the better deal than GeForce for equal or greater performance at a cheaper cost to customer.

Solve : Opinions on gaming rig build?

Answer»

This is what I plan on putting in my rig:

OS: Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
Mobo: ASUS Maximus V FORMULA
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570K Ivy Bridge
RAM: G.SKILL Sniper Gaming Series 16GB 1866
PSU: CORSAIR AX860i 860W Full Modular
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 680 FTW+ 4GB
Hard Drive 1: SAMSUNG 840 Series 2.5" 250GB SSD (for OS)
Hard Drives 2 & 3: WD Caviar Black 2TB (for games)
CPU Cooler: COOLER MASTER Eisberg 240L Prestige
Case: NZXT PHANTOM 820

Any ADVICE, opinions or feedback would be most welcome What's your budget, where are you in the world, and what is the PC going to be used for?
Off the top of my head, the PSU is way overkill for the system, you really don't need that wattage. I would recommend the 840 Pro over the standard 840 SSD. The motherboard is extremely high end, will you be making use of its overclocking abilities? If so, consider a better CPU cooler and case (wow that case is expensive, I would never spend £200 on an NZXT case...) Also, consider the GTX 780 over the GTX 680. Finally, why the HDDs for games?
If you let us know the answer to the above questions, we'll be able to give more specific advice.Hmm, let's see., I'm in the US. I have no idea what my budget is, 3000 dollars US? I'm just buying stuff as I go. I already have the GPU, SSD and RAM. The build will be exclusively for gaming. The 2TB drives might be a bit much for storing games, but I have almost 1TB of games right now and I want plenty of space for more. As for overclocking it's something that I'd like to do, just to see how far that motherboard can go Any advice on CPU coolers and CASES? I really don't want a case that looks like a filing CABINET, that's why I chose the Phantom 820. It has a more interesting shape to it. I went with the PSU so that I can run 2 or 3 way SLI later on. Maybe my explaining a bit more here will generate more feedback OK, that helps quite a bit.
If you like the looks of the NZXT, fair enough, they're just not known for their build quality. Have a look at the Silverstone Fortress line, or if you want something a bit different, the Raven. I'm a big fan of Lian Li, but that's because my taste in cases is pretty much the opposite to yours, so they're probably not an option for you. Have you considered the Coolermaster HAF cases, too?
If you're contemplating 3-way SLI, then the AX860 MAY make sense.
The reason I mentioned the HDDs is that they're immensely slower than a decent SSD. I myself used to run a 3-drive RAID array for games and a small SSD for the OS, but eventually went for a larger SSD and just didn't install all of my games at once. If you need the space, perhaps consider another SSD instead of one of the 2TB drives - one SSD for your OS and applications and some games, one purely for games, then the 2TB can have your rarely played games stored on it as it will be much slower.
As for the CPU cooler, the issue I have with the all in one water coolers is that they don't cool any better than a decent tower heatsink like a Phantek, Megahalems, NH-D14 or Alpenfohn K2, they're no quieter, and you have the problem that if the pump fails (which I've seen quite often) you have no cooling at all. All of the above heatsinks will be on par with, or better than the kit, without its disadvantages. of course, if you prefer the looks of the all-in-one kit, that's fine, but have you considered "real" watercooling? Better temperatures, lower noise...higher cost, but you have the budget for it if you WANTED. It's something to think about.

One other thing - if you can, I would wait for the new "Haswell" CPUs to be released, which is imminent along with the Z87 chipset to support them. They will perform better with lower power usage too.I heard a rumor that the new Haswells might be released early next week But, is it wise to buy new tech so early in it's lifespan? Won't there be problems with the Haswells and the Z87's early on?Haswell is due for release in early June, yes. It brings a significant performance boost in gaming especially, which is why I would certainly advise waiting.
I've used release (and pre-release) Intel hardware without unexpected problems. The CPUs are unlikely to have any problems, even teething troubles. The motherboards may be different, you may recall Intel recalling their 6 series chipset due to a potential problem with the SATA controller. No such problems were experienced with the Ivy bridge release and the 7 series chipset, nor were there major problems with the 3, 4, or 5 series. I think it's unlikely that there will be major fallout from the release, and any small issues will more than likely revolve around the various motherboards and will be resolved through motherboard BIOS updates.
My advice would be to wait a week or so after release, see what problems, if any, the early adopters have. Remember that this tech has been out there for weeks or months in the hands of reviewers and testers. Then, if there are problems and you're not quite sure - simply buy an Ivy Bridge CPU (at perhaps a slightly cheaper price although historically Intel haven't dropped the pricing on replaced CPUs) and a Z77 motherboard (which more than likely will have dropped in price due to the Haswell release) - win/win Sounds like a plan, I guess it won't affect the parts I already have. It looks like I can get a 500GB SSD for the same price as the two 2TB HDD's. That just doesn't seem like enough room to me. I really don't want to have to install a game every time I want to play it, especially the ones on Steam, they take forever to download It is true that there are many games that I have installed that I don't play enough to warrant them taking up space on my hard drive. I guess I could just install the choice ones on the SSD until I can afford another one. I can also just leave the ones I seldom play on the 1TB external drive where they are now Spend some of your budget on a fast internet connection
Do you really have over 500GB of games you play regularly? I found that slimming down from having 1.2TB of games helped focus me to work through my backlog of games I bought on sale but hadn't yet played.
Having the games on an SSD isn't crucial, as it will only affect loading times (and prevent stutter in games that load textures on-the-fly) but perhaps you could replace one of the 2TBs with another 250GB SSD, which would give you a decent selection of games, then the rest could go on the other 2TB drive? Just a suggestion. You could use the excellent program "Steam Mover" to move games between drives as necessary - despite its name, it can be used to move literally anything. It does this by creating junction links, which means Windows and anything else trying to access the program still sees the files at the original location, therefore it doesn't break anything by moving the files. It's very handy, I used to use it when I had a small SSD to move games back and forth. That Steam Mover looks pretty cool, I just downloaded it I think I can get by with a 500GB SSD and a 1TB HDD with that program.
Cool, glad you're finding it useful Bit of a learning curve for me, but I'll figure it out

Solve : Java error?????

Answer»

could be, but up to now still NO solution from the experts here... I didn't post because your first post makes no sense.

After having installed the latest updates of MS and Sun Java

This is interesting because the MS Java VIRTUAL Machine was discontinued something like 8 years ago. Therefore I'm not sure what you would "update" it to. nonetheless.

I do get a strange error when using a.o. my bankaccount which runs Java:

Alright, cool, so this is a java problem!

It says:

and shows:

wut? You're on about java and now you're telling us about JScript errors in the page. They are unrelated.

Quote
What is this and how do I get rid of it?
It's a script error. That should be rather clear from the title bar. It also has nothing to do with Java, despite your rambling to the contrary. correlation!= causation.

Quote
Java works fine...
Well... then what the *censored* is the problem?

Sounds to me like whomever designed the bank site did so very poorly, combined with not carefully testing with all browser versions. Personally any bank that USES Java (how very 1996) for the sensitive actions of account management, is something I would stay the heck away from.

Also, whomever wrote the content in the link you gave is talking out their *censored*. JScript/JavaScript is absolutely unrelated in any way to Java. "purging java from your system" is about as likely to fix a JScript/JavaScript error as taking antibiotics is likely to cure HIV.

From the Bug page, which should not be on Java.com for the aforementioned reason that it's not related to java, it could happen with flash as well. nonetheless:

After much testing (ie: IE6, IE7, Multiple Java versions, etc) we have isolated it to be an issue with the newer versions of Java AND having IE configured to use a Proxy PAC file. I am now able to cause and fix this error at will.

Close all open copies of IE. In Control Panel go to "Internet Options". Select the Connections tab and then click the "LAN settings" button.

At the top section of this screen are two settings - "Automatically detect settings" and "Use automatic configuration script". The second option also has an area where you can type the address of your automatic configuration script (in our case a Proxy Autoconfiguration or .PAC file.

Before you try this, you may wish to save the address of your PAC file so you can put it back the way it ORIGINALLY was before testing. Now uncheck the "Use automatic configuration script" option (you can leave the "Automatically detect settings" option checked if that is how it is currently set), click OK on both of the open dialog boxes until you are back at Control Panel.

Fire up IE and now try your problem website again - hopefully it should work without the JScript error. For me - it does every time. I can break it by turning on the PAC file and I can fix it by turning of the PAC file. I can even leave the "Use automatic configuration script" option turned on, but give it an address to a non-existent PAC file and it will still work (I guess equivalent to not having a PAC file).

Just as an FYI, we spent quite a bit of time testing the code of the PAC file to ensure that this was not the issue and we have verified it is not - it is an issue between the latest Java versions and the PAC file. I have tested from V6 Release 3 up to V6 Release 13 and they all produce the same issue. I had seen some notes that SUGGESTED earlier releases of V6 do not have this issue, but in our case my testing disproves this.

Some of the comments in this thread led me to look at the PAC file area - thanks for your hints folks. :-)

For now I will have to create a shortcut which uses a .REG file to unset and set the "Use automatic configuration script" option when required. At the moment that is feasible because I only have one problem site, but if we were to upgrade our Java on all workstations I can see this issue becoming a major headache, based on the other reports I have read on this issue.

Hopefully Sun can resolve this fairly soon, as I have already spend considerable time on this one, and it seems to have been an outstanding issue for quite a while. I hope this post is some help to the rest of you.

let me summarize.

The problem is on your bank's end.now you experts lost me...really....every event on my PC that starts with a Java-participation shows those little errorwindows and yes one of those is my bank.....but making such a "summarize" is really not understandable....and quite USELESS too....because after having followed the uninstall and re-install suggestions here, the problem still is occurring or do I have to say re-occurring?
