Solve : insufficient power supply draining cmos battery?? |
Answer» I just got a new video card (ati radeon 9600xt) and it recommends having a 300 watt power SUPPLY. I have a 250 watt power supply. After I installed the new card I started getting the error message "Alert: system BATTERY VOLTAGE low". I talked to the Dell customer support people and they're saying my cmos battery needs to be replaced. Is the new video card draining energy from the battery? Is the alert reffering to the cmos battery? Or are the Dell support people on crack? |

Solve : torrents, bad the good and ugly.? |
Answer» I heard that torrents are okay for the most part. The thing is that I know you can get BACK hacked cause you open a port. So are they real bad or ANYTHING, from what I hear.Quote from: squall_01 on May 16, 2009, 05:10:08 PM I heard that torrents are okay for the most part. The thing is that I know you can get back hacked cause you open a port. So are they real bad or anything, from what I hear. The good that I've heard is that as long as the original file is clean, then if you have uTorrent, you won't be infected by seeders. All torrents are bad. Quote from: Geek-9pm on May 16, 2009, 07:17:56 PM All torrents are bad. That's just being biased. Why do you think ALL torrents are bad?If the torrents clean your fine. Make shure to read the torrent comments because they will TELL you if there is a virus and what not. If theres no comments try to look elsewhereI have never found a torrent I liked. Yes, I have used them. Later came to dislike it altogether. J Just too much risk.To answer the QUESTION about opening ports, you can choose whether or not to open a port. And even if you do open a port, the chance of someone hacking you is VERY unlikely, near impossible.....unless you download a trojan that allows an attacker to gain access of your computer....A good read on p2p DANGERS. P2P file sharing: Anticipate the risks before you download your first file File Sharing, otherwise known as Peer To Peer. (P2P). so its not a toldy bad thing. I dont know were most of mine came from an I tried not to do torrents if I dint have to.Didn't have to what? |

Solve : Windows XP 64-bit won't recognize SATA HD? |
Answer» I just built a new system from the ground up and I bought a seagate 160 GB 7200 rpm serial ATA hard drive. I went to install Windows XP 64-bit edition (because I am running a 64-bit platform) and of COURSE the windows setup did not detect my hard drive by its'self...so i pressed F6 to install the drivers and I used the drivers that came with the CD, however it doesn't work with those drivers it WOULD give me an error message saying a file was corrupt. So I tried the drivers from my motherboard manufacturer, those didn't work either...Long story short I've tried just about every driver i could find and NONE of them work. So I thought it might be the OS (considering that windows xp 64-bit is still beta) so i tried a copy of windows 2000...and it would recognize the drivers however it would not install them...I am now at a loss as of what to do next...should i get a standard IDE hard drive...should I return this drive...If anyone could help me with this issue I'd greatly APPRECIATE it. Thank you so much for your time. -Nickive said it somewhere else... |

Solve : Free Telephone number lookup website? |
Answer» Has anyone out there found a totally free TELEPHONE number look-up site? No matter what site I go to that says you can look up a phone number FREE, they redirect you to Intellius or some other site that wants you to join for $$$$$ or charge you $1.95 for the phone number. Most of the phone companies no longer publish White or Yellow pages so we are a captive audience. Thank youQuote from: 02bin3 on December 29, 2012, 05:12:14 PM Most of the phone companies no longer publish White or Yellow pages ...Huh? They still distribute the paper phone books in all communities here in Ohio, as FAR as I know. Surely, if the phone companies stop printing phone books, they'll make online directories available. Agree with Soybean... I can GIVE you some of mine...we probably have 15 or so...I live in the North East where Verizon used to own the landlines, however, after selling them to FairPoint, we no longer received phone books except for 1 that is privately published and is hit-or-miss with phone numbers. FairPoint does not issue phone books, and I have looked all over Google for websites that might be affiliated with a telecommunications carrier, and there just doesn't seem to be any. Every single one wants to charge you for the phone number. We all learned to go to the phone book to look up a number instead of calling 411, and then the phone companies started charging 50 cents every time someone called Information for a phone number. It just doesn't seem quite fair that the phone companies have left many of us out to dry by not providing FREE phone numbers on the Internet. After all, their expensive to publish phone books are no charge. Up until recently I could get phone numbers on the internet, however, it seems they've all gone over to charging for phone number look-up now. Thank you all for your input. For looking up numbers, I used to use DexKnows, just click on "Find a Person" for Whitepages. Recently, I switched to http://www.whitepages.com/ even though they are the exact same service as DexKnows because for some REASON DexKnows temporarily discontinued reverse-phone lookups (which is back up again). When you see ads from WhitePages/DexKnows to see a phone number, it means that the number listed. Likewise, the same occurs when you do a reverse phone-lookup. Charges to see the information are especially prevalent when it comes to reverse lookup on cellular phone numbers. For businesses directory, you could use Microsoft's free voice-activated service. Oddly, it does not have a website dedicated to itself that I could find, but you can read about it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tellme_Networks Or just dial it at (888) 247-2425. It works quite well and will connect you for free, especially useful on payphones that don't lock up the microphone in the receiver... Don't know how widespread this service is available but here in Canada (i believe it also is available in the U.S.) this site offers what you seek. http://411.ca/ truenorthThanks for your suggestion, TrueNorth. 411.com was my last bastion for free phone numbers, however, they too have recently redirected phone number searches to PeopleFinders who want $1.95 to provide the phone number. These Directory Assistance websites advertise themselves on Google as being "free", however, they are not. At least here in the USA they aren't free. Just a random thought...your browser searches may be being re-directed to all pay SITES...Hello Patio, I tried using IE instead of Firefox and it directed me to PeopleFinder, too. No matter what Directory Assistance website I go to, they end up redirecting you to another site that wants money for giving you the phone number. Thank you02bin3,I believe patio is on to something in his last post.I just used 411.com to look up a friend of mine in Auburn GA using first and last names and city and state. I got an immediate correct address and phone number. I don't know if some embedded program can take over all browsers and redirect the search. Just as an experiment download/install/use browser Opera to see what happens. If it also turns out to be the same then i think you have a malware issue to deal with.truenorthIt's not just him experiencing this. Whenever I reverse look up a cell phone or normally unlisted number, it's always redirected (either immediately or when a 'show more info' button is clicked) to another site with membership required. Known listed landline phone numbers don't do this when reverse looked-up, and a normal lookup by name and location does give the phone# in most cases. It's been this way since I first did some directory searches several years ago. 02bin3: Are you doing a reverse lookup or a normal lookup by name and location? Have you tried looking up known names/numbers?TechnoGeek: "02bin3: Are you doing a reverse lookup or a normal lookup by name and location? Have you tried looking up known names/numbers?" Funny you should ask. I wasn't doing a reverse lookup, just by name & town. I did do as TrueNorth suggested and downloaded Opera and tried that. Got the same results, however, I started looking up names, including my own, of people that I knew that did not have unlisted numbers and some lookups did provide the phone number and some of them were redirected despite the fact that I knew they had a number that was not unlisted??? Then I did they same thing using IE and Firefox and sometimes I got the numbers and sometimes I was redirected. My own number is in the local phone book that covers many, many towns, in two states and is about 1/4" thick (sparsely populated here), however when I looked it up on 411.com, and other online directories, I was redirected to a pay-for-number site. Doesn't seem to be rhyme-nor-reason as to why one number comes up and another one doesn't. Ah well, thank you all for your interest and input.zabasearch.com is free and gives more than a phone number, address, etc. It is terribly frustrating to be asked to pay for phone numbers. If you forget the name of this website, just search "find people" and it will come up, at least it will in Google Chrome. |

Answer» Running WinXP Pro. When I install a program it does not SHOW up on programs menu. Under "documents and SETTINGS" in directory I have a folder called "all users" and one called "Office" which is the name logged on to, and is the only choice given at logon. The installed programs seem to be going to the "office" folder but my start/run/programs is showing the "all users" programs. Also the programs only show 3 ROWS and end with the programs STARTING in "m". Both program folders show considerable more programs than APPEAR on the Start/Programs menu. |

Solve : How to create natural sounding audiobooks with no limits? |
Answer» I have roughly 80 PDF documents that range from 2 pages to 20 pages each. I am trying to find a WAY to convert them each to an audiobook to help me read and study the documents, including listening to while out. I believe I am able to convert them to text if that makes things easier. I am trying to find an app or program or some solution where the voice is more human than robotic and where there is no word/character limit. I have come across some apps that have pretty good natural voices that can read the text but the ones I have seen have LIMITS on how many words/characters. I am looking to play this audio through my iPhone and ALSO on my PC (Lenovo). Please let me KNOW if you need ANYTHING clarified regarding what I am looking for. I appreciate any help! Thank you. |

Solve : Video Compression? |
Answer» I've created a video using my WEBCAM, which was saved as an AVI file. I then edited it in Windows Movie Maker and that saved it as a WMV. The file is about 60mb now and I was wondering whether there was something I could do to make it smaller without zipping it or whatever. I want to upload it to a website and EMBED it into a webpage. Reducing the size ALWAYS decreases the quality with audio, video, etc.Well, hmm... What about changing the file extension? Some times, there are different video and audio extensions that do turn out different file sizes, with the same quality results. And what about Codex? You might be able to find a codex conversion program. There are special video compression softwares and companies that you could pay good money to avoid loss, but its too much to pay for the average user.Quote What about changing the file extension? You DO know that changing the name/extension of a file does nothing to its contents? Don't you? Quote Some times, there are different video and audio extensions that do turn out different file sizes, with the same quality results.MPG enocding can be lossy but can also produce results that are virtually indistinguishable from the original. Have a look in the software FAQ (see my signature) for Vidomi.Quote QuoteWhat about changing the file extension? You DO know that changing the name/extension of a file does nothing to its contents? Don't you? What I meant, and I realize I didn't communicate this one well, was to convert it to a different file type (that's what I meant by file extension) Hows that novel of yours comming along?Quote Hows that novel of yours comming along? You've knocked me over there. I'm flattered that someone paid attention to my rambling! Doing well thank you; I've got a tedious formatting job to do, about 10% done now, but making good progress. It's entitled "Insensate" and it's a fantasy thriller. Feel free to back away in horror.Quote Great. It'll be $500. Deal? Are you going to get it published, or are you still planning to stick to Amazon*? (Wondering if I will see it in my public library soon) * See, I do pay attention. I even remembered the Amazon rambling (the typos you would see if I didn't have Google Spellcheck at 1:50AM) BTW: I just noticed your rank is "Egg Head" and now I wonder how well that applys to you... and why I've only seen that rank for your username...Rob is in a league by himself. |

Answer» Basically I'm pretty useless with computers. Can anyone tell me which processor is better? A Viiv PENTIUM D915 Processor Dual Core (2.80Ghz, 800Mhz, FSB 2x2Mb cache) or a Viiv Core 2 Duo Processor E6300 (1.86Ghz, 1066Mhz, 2Mb Cache)? I have been informed it is the latter, but I just want to make sure I make the right choice. Thanks. Basically I'm pretty useless with computers. Thanks. Yes, it is the latter. The Core 2 Duo family is the succesor to the Pentium D family. They give u more performance each clock cycle. That is why the E6300 @ 1.86Ghz would be better than a Pentium D 920 @ 2.8Ghz, even though it seems pretty crazy. You can also tell this, by the price. The E6300 costs 180$, while the Pentium D 920 costs 115$. Not ONLY that, but the E6300 can overclock up to 3.0Ghz, making it the same as the X6800, the most powerfull CPU on earth by far. That is why the E6300 is not only the fastest CPU out of the BOX, but it has the most potential of all the CPU's currently released. It is the best price/performance effective CPU that has ever been released, giving u 1000$ worth of performance (price of the X6800) for only 150-180$. The only thing that the E6300 (Allendale) CPU dose not have better is cache. It has only 2MB for 2 cores, while the more expensive Core 2 Duos (the ones called Conroe, wich are the E6600 and up) have 4MB of cache. This dosent improve performance all that much, but is important to some enthusiests. Even the Pentium D 920 has 4MB, but in no way does that make it better. *Note that u should also buy a great cooler for the E6300 to make the overclock much and easier, perform better, reduce temperatures and thus prolong it's life. I reccomend the Zalman CNPS9700 heatpipe cooler. The Core 2 Duo CPUs are the finest ever created and i hope to also have one of them soon. Enjoy! Chris Thanks for your time, and your detailed explanation has put my mind at rest. I am purchasing my computer from Del, so would it still be feasible to to install the cooler you are talking of? Thanks again.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_coolingQuote Track... sorry to kinda go of track but.. and also pardon the pun... i brought a new pc and have a water cooling system... my friend was telling me they are usless and also break easy destroying pc's with water... is this true ?? Water Cooling is not risky.Quote Thanks for your time, and your detailed explanation has put my mind at rest. I am purchasing my computer from Del, so would it still be feasible to to install the cooler you are talking of? You should still be able to install an aftermarket cooler. If u already know what components u want, u dont have to buy an already built PC, or u can at LEAST buy each part seperatly and have the company build it for u especially. Buying a PC already built wouldnt be more cost effective as using the online form to choose what parts u want and have them contruct it for u, on newegg.com or such.ok, so is the Viiv Core 2 Duo Processor E6300 (1.86Ghz, 1066Mhz, 2Mb Cache) better than the intel viiv pentium 945 Dual core processor (3.40Ghz, 800Mhz, 2x2Mb)?Did you read that up there? Keep in Mind that you will not be able to overclock your Dell. You may not be interested in this anyway. (I wouldn't be.) My first question 6 days ago has still not been answered. Quote More details about the rest of the system and what you are trying to do (gaming?) would be important info to add. The "best" depends on what you want to do.I'm not sure I will be overclocking, especially as I'm not sure what it is! Haha. I will be using the computer for general mutimedia, internet and a wee BIT if gaming now and then. Nothing too testing. Thanksoverclocking is where you boost the capability of a HARDWARE above it limits.. but its very dangerous u could burn it up if you dont keep it kool.Quote overclocking is where you boost the capability of a hardware above it limits.. but its very dangerous u could burn it up if you dont keep it kool.Overclocking is like eating.. if u cant see that u have gained 400 pounds, maybe u shouldnt be doing it. Its not dangerous if u keep an eye on the temperatures. One of the reasons I don't overclock -- it's too easy to lose track. (Besides, I rarely'd need it.)One of the reasons I don't overclock is................just look at me. SNAP! [smiley=vrolijk_26.gif]I'd rather pay a bit extra for the next model up, than mess around overclocking, let alone BUY stuff for overclocking!!! |

Gmods cannot change the entire forum, just what the admin specifies they can change. something that way when can have a way to fight some of the bugsQuote I paid for Windows ME and got a whole heap of trouble. I didn't pay for Ubuntu Linux and didn't get a whole heap of trouble. So I guess you don't get what you don't pay for... Or better yet you get what you didn't pay for... patio. 8-)Now, come on, GX1_Man. You compare anything to winME and it puts WinME in the dust. Linux is great, true, but Windows ME defies the "get what you pay for" axiom. Heck, Windows 98 is better! That's really not a fair comparison. Honestly! I haven't had ONE single problem with Windows ME! I've had MORE problems with 98! Too many BSOD's!Oh, I got the BSOD with 98, for sure. But when I got ME I got a BSOD an average of 10 times a day, to the point where the computer wouldn't run LONG enough to do a virus scan. This had partly to do with our reliance on NORTON at the time to protect the system (HEY, we didn't know), and partly to do with ME's instability. On Windows XP, I've gotten a BSOD maybe TWICE since I got my first copy of it way back in... can't remember... no matter. You can see why I like XP: Relative to other Microsoft OS's, it's extremely stable.Quote Oh, I got the BSOD with 98, for sure. But when I got ME I got a BSOD an average of 10 times a day, to the point where the computer wouldn't run long enough to do a virus scan. This had partly to do with our reliance on Norton at the time to protect the system (hey, we didn't know), and partly to do with ME's instability.I don't think I have ever gotten BSOD on Windows XP, that's because its been replaced with other error messages. But I really am not kidding: I haven't had any Windows ME problems. Quote Now, come on, GX1_Man. You compare anything to winME and it puts WinME in the dust. Linux is great, true, but Windows ME defies the "get what you pay for" axiom. Heck, Windows 98 is better! That's really not a fair comparison. Ummmm, I think you are referring to Rob, the Eggman. Oops! EDIT: Zylstra, there is a BSOD in WinXP. when we had winMe my lil sister did something to the nav. files which would cuz the bsod at the logon screen sometimes, or right after you logged on.. sadly i wasnt too familiar with the art of reformating so we had to take it to a gateway shop in the next town and they said they fixed it but the only pushed the bsod back til 10 mins after youve logged on.. then we got a new computer. Quote when we had winMe my lil sister did something to the nav. files which would cuz the bsod at the logon screen sometimes, or right after you logged on.. sadly i wasnt too familiar with the art of reformating so we had to take it to a gateway shop in the next town and they said they fixed it but the only pushed the bsod back til 10 mins after youve logged on.. then we got a new computer. The NAV files? You mean "Norton AntiVirus"? Of course it would GIVE you BSOD. As well as BS! Dilbert: That BSOD message comes before Windows XP starts. It represents that there is a hardware error and that starting your computer may cause SERIOUS damage. It also represents that my teacher has been trying to open the computers to eat the SPAM that she thought the SPAM filter caught.oh ok... well i didnt know that back thenQuote Dilbert: LOL Actually, on several occasions I got a BSOD during my Windows session. I was unable to troubleshoot after the third time because it never came back. Why'd I wait for numero tres for me to troubleshoot? My policy on troubleshooting. If it's a hardware problem, troubleshoot immediately. If it's a software issue, wait a bit and see if it was a fluke. |

Solve : Useless question re: Ad-Aware? |
Answer» So you run an Ad-Aware scan. This is good. You're system is CLEAN. Also good. But while running the scan, you notice that the data regarding the file currently being scanned (you know, next to the blue arrow) OFTEN changes in color from black to red or green. Does anyone know what this is meant to indicate? I'm wondering strictly out of curiousity. If you LOOK closely, you will see the difference. Executable files, non executable files, and registry entries. Not necessarily in that order.Ah... I assumed it MUST be something like that. Thanks for letting me waste your TIME, 2k!!a question is a question no matter how simple or how confusing... |

Solve : Insert key? |
Answer» what is the function of "insert" key on the KEYBOARD?If you're in Word or ANOTHER text editor, and you NEED to type over other text, hit the Insert key and start typing. Instead of "bumping" the text down, it overwrites it. Not very handy anymore, but it used to be used a lot more. Many people remain familiar with the Shift-Del; Shift-Ins SHORTCUTS for cut and paste. I find it's useful in programming, where I copy and paste some code a few times, but only need a slight difference between then, such as a few letters. |

Answer» REVISED POST: After careful consideration, I have decided that I do not want to find this out. Because I already KNOW the answer. NEW POST: Is it bad to mix RAM types and speeds?Sometimes it works, sometimes not, but if it does it will run at the speed of the slowest RAM present. Answer» gotta ask this QUESTION: "Using your favorite FTP software SET permission to:What does it mean by "/Script_Directory_folder"?? I mean, which folder in my site? It also says that:- Quote "Once you have COMPLETED the installation you may delete installer.php for security reasons." Why to delete that?? The insttruction also says: Quote To let your visitors execute it, make a link to: What does it mean by the word: "make a link to"? Thanks With all due respect , why don't you question the one who wrote the instructions. dl65 Those instructions are specific to Unix/Linux/BSD installations. You would often delete or move an installation script because of the level of control it provides. It should not be left on a publicly accessible server. |

Solve : Sound input/output help? |
Answer» Hi. I have made a slideshow using PowerPoint and now I am TRYING to make it so it will play on DVD players so it can be watched on a TV. I have found a screen capture program that will capture the slides, but my problem is the music that I have added into the slideshow. The screen capture program can record sound through a microphone as the slideshow plays, but I need to record the sound that comes out of the speaker. I have tried simply putting the microphone in front of the speaker and record it that way, but it did not come out well. I was wondering if there was a way to directly hook up the speaker, such as through the headphone jack, to the microphone jack and record it that way, or maybe hook up a wire from the output jack to the input jack so that my music will record in sync with my presentation? And if this is possible, which type of connection cord would I need? Yes, that does help, thanks. That sounds like what I need. I was looking on the Radio Shack website, but I'm not sure what I am looking for. Do you know what kind of cord it is or what it is called? I can't find it on their website. The cord I bought at the local Radio Shack store was like this, but with 1/8" stereo plug (actually called "1/8 INCH mini-plug") on both ends instead of a 1/8" stereo plug on one end and a 1/4" stereo plug on the other end: 6-Ft. Shielded Cable, 1/8" Plug to 1/4" Stereo Plug Indeed, you need to determine whether your music source uses a 1/4" or 1/8" plug. Also be aware of mono vs. stereo plugs; they look different. The connector on your computer, like mine, is probably 1/8"; I BELIEVE that's standard. Thanks!!! |

Solve : Dell is this fair" Uncle Billy "?? |
Answer» It is TRUE. I sent PeckerWood a psychic e-mail and he got it and replied. It is the end of the net as we know it. TROUBLE is that I think he is trying to hack into my brain. I think that's great and wish more people success if they choose to not use WIndows. This kind of bundling has been present since OS/2 was around. Microsoft got a legal hand slap for this, but it did not stop the behavior. My son GRADUATES IT and CS next May and he uses Linux almost exclusively. Maybe MS will implode.New movie "THE MICROSOFT MATRIX RELOADED" Quote You have a son !! .... :p I got married at 19 years old.I am 55.I have a 16 year old granddaughter. Solve : Forum SPAM problem? |
Answer» I am a MEMBER of another forum (not my forum) that has a serious problem with SPAM. Disable posting by guests. Tick the boxes that make it harder for spambots to sign up automatically (e.g. by using obfuscated letters/numbers which have to be typed in exactly as shown in order to proceed).Guest posting is disabled, and obfuscated letters/numbers must be identified and filled before registration... (But I have to admin, the Invision number "obfuscated" SYSTEM doesnt work too well....)That suggests to me that the spammers are exploiting a known weakness in IPB. The admin logs may provide illuminating reading.Idea: each person must begin their post with a keyword, and any without are deleted automatically. An interesting idea, but one that would require some programming and fairly good knowledge of how IPB is put together.Does invision have a FEATURE that makes it so each time you want to post, you must identify the lettering in one of those "obfuscated" number boxes, and then submit it first? |
