Solve : I'm back!?

Answer»

Sorry to disappoint you, but I'm still here.

What was supposed to be a one-day trip ended up being two days, (one night in a hotel - ugh!) so I wasn't here. Yeah. Well... I'm back. You were gone?

I mean, WELCOME BACK! Quote

You were gone?

I mean, WELCOME BACK!

LOL

Yeah, I didn't post at all two days ago or yesterday (though I did LOG in to READ the posts last night) because some genius in our family decided to take a trip 200 miles south to the border of our state, culminating in a hotel for the night. (Then, there was the drunk Mexican in the NEXT room over... oh God, I didn't get much sleep that night... I really wanted to "ftp" into his "file server" and "upload" a smack to the head (by "file server", I'm referring to his room).)you should have called the front deskGlad to see your back

(I was gone for the weekend last week, no one noticed... unfortunately. But I think I told a few people...)

Solve : My first Acer Desktop with a NFTS and FAT32 HD??

Answer»

Hey I just bought a new Acer desktop from pagecomputers.com. It only cost 374.23 which was surprising to me. But a few things seems a bit strange to me.

First the restore DVD that contains the operating system is missing?
Second when I turn the comp on I've notice that the 160GB HD is divided in to two. One as NFTS and the other as FAT32? While I know when you add both HD amount it won't equal 160, the combine total was about 140GB. What happen to the other 20GB? I don't think Windows XP home is 20GB.

Does this seems strange to anyone else? I've never saw a HD divided in to two, and as both NFTS and FAT32.

Here's a link tot he specs of the computer over at newegg. This was a bargain buy but something doesn't seem right....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16883103032

Why would a HD that is 160GB be divided in to two like this, and in to different formats? (There's a few extra slots for HD add ons) I back up all my data on cdrws, so i dunno what use this suppose to serve. Can I turn this in to one whole HD as NFTS?

Anyone here owns/ use an acer aspire? That is a normal hard drive setup for Acer and not a bad arrangement at all.

The difference in drive space is a COMBINATION of Windows taking up some space AND the way that drive space is calculated by the manufacturers.

Having the drive in two partitions like that is an excellent choice as if when Windows crashes, hopefully all of your important data is stored on the D Drive and will not be obliterated when you format and reinstall. I think you will find that most people who understand computers have a separate partition for the OS and for data.

If you want, you can convert the FAT32 portion to NTFS, but is there any need? Not really.

You should have gotten 5 CD's from Acer with the machine AND you have the ability to create a restore CD set with the software already on the hard drive. You only get ONE chance to make this disc set, so do it early and keep them safe.

I would also contact Acer or the retailer and let them no you did not get the 5 CD Acer restore set.

That is a nice little machine with name brand compnents. I think you will be satisfied.yeah the components and especially the price got my attention!

I don't really have problems with Windows and it doesn't crash crash on me. I usually back up data on a cdrw periodically. It does sound interesting, but I find this set up confusing. Like, which one does my stuff GO in to? I'm not that savy on this and prefer the HD as one whole. It's more familiar to me, like I said before I never saw a HD devided in to two. And to be honest I'm not 100% sure whats FAT32 and NFTS.

Is it possible to not seperate the HD and keep it as One whole? I just want the reg Windows XP with what it comes with, everything else I'll put in myself. For one I'm replacing the Adobe reader with Foxit, works better.

Nope, not a SINGLE CD whatsoever was included. (For a second I was parniod that maybe someone bought it before and return it w/o the cds? I've discovered an angry thread about customers claiming they recieved refurbished items when they claim to have bought factory new. Cause some refurbish items do not include everything.)

Eh.......... only one chance? I didn't have any cdr to use so I closed that option as it was loading the Norton and such. I mean, it would be nice if that was mentioned before I turned it on. I dunno, did I need those items? I'm not a Norton person. I'm e-mailing Acer with little luck, I'll call them. Do you think their would be any problems getting the cds? I did buy them new but not from Acer....Quote

The contents should all be the same. I believe Acer will help you in this matter, although it may not be free. Some companies do not include CD's anyway, even if totally new (HP, Compaq, etc.)

There is no advantage, and actually there is a DISADVANTAGE in having the drive as one big partition. FAT32 and NTFS are just different types of file systems.

If I were you I would load essential programs to C drive and keep the data on D drive for now. When C gets full (if ever) you can install stuff to D. Keep in mind you need to have 15% of the C drive space empty for proper function of Windows.

There should be a program listed for Acer restore disc creation. You only get one chance to make them, but it is not necessarily when you first boot. Look in the programs loaded on the machine.

Your right - ACER make creating the backup CDs responsibility of the end user. It's kind of an industry standard at the moment - all of the computers sold by my employer (or at least all of the ones I sell) come with no CDs at all. Also it's a great way to sell blank CD's with a computer

If I remember correctly one shortcut for loading the ACER backup software is +F10 within Windows XP.

Solve : Monitoring Outlook Outbox queue?

Answer»

Is there a way to monitor Microsoft Outlook's outbox in order to detect if a certain threshold of emails waiting to go out is breeched? Thank you. Can't you just look? I was looking for a way to use code to monitor the outbox to perform an automatic check and then alert us if there are problems. You may well be able to do this with VBA, but could you please explain a bit more about what you're TRYING to accomplish? Are you on broadband? Are you GENERATING mass mailings? WHy should there be any problems with emails accumulating in the Outbox? Do they get there without your knowledge or action? We use a product to send out automatic NOTIFICATIONS. A lot of these involve emails to email ADDRESSES, emails to cell phones, etc. and it is critical that these go out in a timely manner. We just want a way to monitor the outbox so if a pre-determined amount of emails are in the outbox, it may indicate a problem such as getting to the SMTP server. Could you tell us a bit more about this product? Why does it piggyback onto Outlook? Can it send direct?

Solve : Re: notebook question?

Answer»

A very good question, and one debated across the internet on many forums and sites
I have a laptop and my battery is stored in the fridge (lol, read it on some SITE or other, supposed to extend the life)
Hopefully the battery will then last longer, but if you have a power cut your built in UPS (battery) isn't there - happened to me the other day just after I took my battery out, I was like .... *censored* ... what are the CHANCES?
So anyway, it's a question that may not have an ANSWER, but more people seem to say take it out than say don't take it outI wrote an article on this subject which you may find illuminating: >Tips for improving lithium-ion notebook battery life<.That is in fact the article I was referring to, I apologize for not giving credit where credit is due but I read a lot of stuff on the internet, it's hard to keep TRACK of who wrote what
Great article by the way
PS I know it doesn't say keep it in the fridge, I must've read that somewhere elseThe "keep it in the fridge" thing is a myth. Lithium ion perfers to be kept cool, but room temperature will do fine, and below that there are no appreciable benefits.

Thanks for the compliment by the way. I was going to say that I knew Rob before he was an author, but I guess I can't.Still can't blinkin' spell "prefers" THOUGH, can I.

Solve : Crashing?

Answer»

Hey guys,
Well looks like my lptop is ill . Basically the problem is when i play CS:Condition Zero my laptop will randomly just crash and with loads of different colors filling the screen. The only way to revive it is to reboot it. But today instead i got that Blue Screen with loads of different things on. But it only stayed on for like half a second then shut down my laptop. So when i TURN it on i get that 'Report Error Message' thing where it sends it all to Microsoft. It then opned up my FF and took me to this website >Click<
And then i somehow got to this website, not sure if its relevant but like you say, best to provide too much info:
>Clicky again<
It really is a mystery, one DAY i was playing it fine, the next day i was baby sitting, took it round for the little lad to paly on and it jsut started crashing. I know he didint do antthing becuase i was with him, im Virus and Malware free. At first i thought it was a graphics card issue, but what microsoft says seems to suggest otherwise. The image below has all my specs, need anything else just say. Also opening up my system to check things like RAM really isnt an option becuase its a laptop
Thanks

ChrisI had the same problem with CS 1.6 , but once I changed my video card the problem was over...you might consider to get the latest drivers for your video card or, another possible solution would be to copy the Valve folder from program files to somewhere else, uninstall CS Condition Zero and then try to use the one you previously copied.Hey, thanks for reply.
Got latest drivers, had them on for a while, way before it started messing up.
Its really started irritating me.
Also i think its worth mentioning that again i went on it today and instead of having the whole colors mess up, or that blue screen COME up the laptop jsut RESTARTED, no warning, nothing before it, just restarted.
Suggestions would be appreciated
Thanks

ChrisSo does it crash all the time, no matter what you're doing, or just when playing CS?Just CS.....
Its faultless when im doing other things on it, ie word processing or surfing the web.

ChrisSorry if you've already posted this, but is there a patch or something for CS? And do you have it if there is one?Well, my steam updates it self all the time, so i assume so. Its 100% UPDATED on my 'Steam Games' list....
Thanks

ChrisHmm....I'm pretty much out of ideas then, sorryNo worries, im reinstalling CZ. Ill post back the results.

Solve : Computer multiple problems?

Answer»

The computer was running just fine, then last week it BEGAN having problems. It would freeze and go blue screen for no reason. Then a few days later it would go blue screen while starting up and you'd have to restart it several times before it would finally start right. And even then, later it would freeze again.

Now the most recent thing is that the hot keys on the Logitech keyboard wont work anymore. If you set them, it doesn't save them and so none of those buttons work. Also sometimes when it freezes they cdrom drive opens up by itself while restarting. Other times the speakers make a weird clicking sound, windows starts, then it goes blue screen.

The computer is running WinMe and has about 350mb of ram. I can't figure out what's wrong with it and it only seems to be getting worse every day. Can anyone please help?is it up to DATE? what kind of protection do u have? antivirus antispyware?
are they up to date?

did you do scans in safe mode with the system restore off??

unlovedwarriorMcAfee and it's up to date. Did a scan and found nothing.
AdAware also up to date, but it freezes before the scan can finish all the way.

I didn't try the scans in safe mode yet though. If you have important files that have not been backed up, you should back them up ASAP, if you still can. I fear you might have hardware problems developing or you have major 0S issues which may REQUIRE formatting and doing a fresh installation of Windows.

When you are online, do you have firewall protection?

How old is your computer and your hard drive? Have you ever run chkdsk to see what it reports? I dont have a firewall on that computer. It's pretty old like 6 years or more, but the hard drive isn't as old. Maybe 3 or 4 years. And, you used that computer on the Internet regularly? What type of Internet connection do you have? Dialup, DSL, cable?

Again, If you have important files that have not been backed up, you should back them up ASAP, if you still can.

Exactly what McAfee product do you have installed? Is it just anti-virus or does it include other Internet security features?

Have you ever re-formatted the hard drive and re-installed your OS? Apparently, you either did that when you upgraded a hard drive, or you had someone else do it. Do you have your Windows CD?
It has DSL. McAfee is only virus protector. The OS was installed by someone else when we got the new HD. Recently, it needed to be reloaded because of corrupt system files but the HD wasn't formatted that time. I dont have the OS disc though.

I also dont have backups of any of the files. I guess I should get on that :-/Yes, you'd BETTER backup anything you would not want to lose. Keep in mind such things as browser Favorites, email settings, ADDRESS book, etc., when determining what you want to backup.

You have no firewall. That's bad, especially with a broadband (DSL/cable) Internet connection; it's quite likely the cause of your problems. You've picked up malware that you might not have gotten if you had firewall protection.

Why don't you have the OS disc? How did the person who serviced your computer reinstall Windows?
The best solution in this case may be a formatting of the hard drive and reinstalling Windows. The WinME disc we had, had gotten lost some years ago. The repair guy had his own copy.

Also, is it possible to get the malware removed without reformatting the hd? There are a number of programs on the hd that can't be replaced or reinstalled and I dont want to lose them.

Solve : desktop cleanup?

Answer»

hi ppl ,

im new here. i have desktop thats bland. it needs more FUNCTION. is that possible. if you know how to work a NICE desktop let me know. please.

charley1A desktop is a home for the icons. Once you start a program the desktop does not matter. It just wastes SYSTEM resources trying to look "kewl". It has absolutely nothing to do with function.

Really, if you have nothing better to do than worry about decorating a desktop you should get out more. Desk or the actual desktop on your COMPUTER?

you could add a background...We will just have to disagree. It has NOTHING to do with the desktop. It has to do with productive use of applications, which, when running, cover the desktop.

Desktop adornments are like tattoos....without the risk.

Solve : long distance wireless network?

Hi, I am wanting to set up a WIRELESS home network and I need it to extend through 1 EXTERIOR wall, aprox 500ft and through another exterior wall. There are a few trees between the two structures but not too thick. Any ideas on what I could use. I'm sorta STUPID on this subject as I know nothing on wireless network. I will be connecting using satellite internet to 2 desktops. Thanks for any help you can give me.Run a long cable to another wireless hub. How about a range expander?Microwave Transmitters!Sounds expensive. Maybe the neighbors just need to get their own or stick with dial-up. I measured it out and its RIGHT at 300' so maybe there is a chance.300 + feet is about the limit before signal degradation i believe...Rob would know alot more about this.

300 + feet is about the limit before signal degradation i believe...
Spot on for cat5 (you'd have to use a repeater to go further than this) but you can double that for cat6. Up to 200 metres (660-ish feet) is possible.

Obviously your mileage may vary, and over that kind of length of cable run, you'd really have to use top quality cable for the best results. If the network can't go that far, make solutions with the adapters. Buy outdoor antennaes which can go up to a kilometer or so (that's what they say).

Or.....PLUG a bare metal wire in the antannae slot of the wireless router and wrap it around the roof of ur house 2-3 times. You'll broadcast signals for miles. ( I wonder if that really works. Someone once told me that worked with an adapter).

Solve : How Do Companies Measure TV Ratings?

How do companies measure TV ratings? I have two problem areas:

2. How do they know if one person or a whole family are watching the TV? Are the actual TV rating numbers the number of TVs tuned in or people watching?Straw polls.

What's on their political minds? More tax money right?

Offbeat-Did the UK make season 5 of Coupling?Well in America I ASSUME that all TV shows are funded primarally by comercials (or adverts as we call them here) and it's always been like that.

In England, on the other hand, when TV was first introduced the only channels available were those provided by the British Broadcasting Corperation (BBC). When you got the TV you had to buy a TV licence too (which lasts for 1 year) in order to fund the BBC channels. However, on the plus side there were no comericals on them. It is also worth noting that the BBC is semi-regulated by the government, but there are fairness rules in place to stop the BBC from being politcally biased overall. (For example during elections all political parties are given short slots to promote their party).

Eventually of course, additional channels began appearing on TV and these ones were not funded by the TV licence, so they had to get their money from comercials. The first comerical TV station which is now called ITV (not sure about its original name) was somewhat ironically envied by the BBC because of their large commercial revenues and plus they were not restricted by the government. At this time I think there were only 3 channels available, BBC1, BBC2 and ITV (commonly refered to by channel 3 even today).

Anyway back to today. There are now four BBC channels, which collectively are watched by a very high proportion by TV viewers, despite the fact there are HUNDREDS of other channels available. They are only allowed to advertise for their own shows, nothing else. Which is very handy because you can watch a whole show uninterupted by any comericals! All other channels on the other hand have comercials about every 15 minutes, which can get very irratating after watching BBC for a while.

Although I think the TV licence actually gives good value for money (I'd be willing to pay more for less comercials on other channels, they do my head in) the reduction and even removal of the TV licence most certainly is a current political issue. The main reasons are that in this "modern competative" world, the BBC should have to secure its own revenue etc just like any other company instead of being spoon-fed by the government. Another arguement is that people have to pay for a licence whether they watch BBC or not.

You may be suprised to know that most countries in Europe have a MANDATORY TV licence system in place. In England a licence costs £131.50 a year, per household (not per TV).

Sorry for any inaccurate information... I'm not a TV historian :-/Here in the States they have little people that hide in the closet and WRITE down what is being watched and by whom...Commercial radio ratings in the UK are done via. a survey by RAJAR. The idea is to take a sample of people and find out when they listen and where.

I would assume TV would use a similar system...

Oh, and about the TV licence - I found this on Wikipedia.

Oh and as students - we're prime targets for TV LICENSING!!!Thank you very much Neil. That is the first time anyone ever gave me such a perfect answer on a forum.

I don't deserve a straight answer if you have seen my past post but, again thanks, and God Bless The UK. Quote

im GETTING to be very busy and i have a horrible memory . so i was wondering if anyone knows a good PROGRAM that pops up a REMINDER for birthdays, appointments, etc. any help would be greatly appreciated. I use the Yahoo calendar for reminders. When you enter the event, you can tell it to email you a reminder on a specified day/hour. For birthdays and other THINGS that require cards, presents, reservations, I give myself several days of warning.

The trick now is, do not delete the email until you "Gitter Dun".

I think most web mail programs have a similar calendar set up, you might search your mail program for one or sign-up at Yahoo, MyWay, or a host of free email programs that have a decent calendar feature.

I find the Yahoo calendar is easier to set up meeting dates that fall on [first Thursday of each month] or birthday/anniversaries [repeat every year] and so on.

My 2½¢You can download Plam Desktop from Palm's website for free. It provides calendar plus contact management. And if you own a Palm Handheld, you can sync with it too. Bargain.hey THANKS alot guys! i think ill go for the palm desktop.

It usually means Windows is increasing the paging file. Have you modified the virtual memory settings RECENTLY?vitaliy...... Well as you only have 256mb of ram ....and in your words ....
"when i am doing a lot of stuff all at once" you have used up all your real memory ....... so you see that message ......... more ram would certainly help .
Do a google for low virtual memory and you will see all the info .

In the control panel go to system, advanced, performance settings, advanced, tell us the number in the virtual memory box.it is 375 mb On that page click the settings... if it is not current set to Windows controls the AMOUNT, do so. If it already is on that setting, set it to manually control and increase the maximum value to about 768. You may need to restart your computer.Quote

iPod gets its game on
MARC Saltzman
11/5/2006

Not content with its 75 percent share of the digital music device market in the United States, Apple Computer Inc. has morphed its wildly popular iPod into a pocket-sized photo album, podcast player and video viewer.
And now the Cupertino, California-based tech company has unveiled its LATEST plan to stay on top: iPod games.
iPod owners with any fifth-generation (video) player -- which sells for $249 (30-gigabyte version) or $349 (80-gigabyte version) -- can now download nine games from the iTunes store for $4.99 apiece, which can then be synched to the iPod to take on the go. You must first download and install the latest iTunes 7 software for Microsoft Windows or Apple Macintosh computers.
Titles INCLUDE some well-known classics and some not-so-familiar games: "Tetris," "Zuma," "Texas Hold'em," "Mahjong," "Mini Golf," "Pac-Man," "Cubis 2," "Bejeweled" and "Vortex."
Many games let you pause your progress and offer the option to SEE the time and battery level in the top corners of the 2.5-inch screen.
The following is a look at three of the new offerings to see how they stack on up on the iPod:
'Pac-Man'
Already one of the most popular cellphone downloads of the year, "Pac-Man" has chomped its way to the iPod.

Please, share some knowledge with me as to what do professionals use in an extreme wheater condition, like jungle or sahara. Thanks!!!

For future reference, you could still do as I suggested. Use FDISK in Windows, cfdisk in Linux, or the partition MANAGER of your favourite Linux installation. It will only touch the drives you tell it to touch. But Mark is right. Give KUBUNTU all of the second drive and it will love you forever.

Have you considered Xubuntu? Should be slicker/faster than Ubuntu/Kubuntu default installs.

I saw this show once I think last year and it was pretty decent though a little too slow in spots and on the DRAMATIC side (egging on failing old-movie star careers I'm sure)... [highlight] not sure what this post might generate?[/highlight]

Oct. 4, 2006 - It’s a regular affectation of television critics to declare this or that show—“Lost,” “The Wire,” “House”—the “best show on television.” I am not a television critic, nor can I claim to have watched nearly enough TV to back up such a blanket assertion. But let me just say that “Battlestar Galactica,” which starts its third season this week on the SCI Fi Channel (premiering FRIDAY night at 9 p.m. ET), is indisputably, hands-down and without question, the best show on television.

That is absolutely not true. Iandmillions of OTHERS do so without incident.SOme wireless adapters are harder that others to get to WORK because of the Windows monopoly, but Xandros has great hardware support.

It is better to use an intact cable of the correct length. Radio SHack has adapters for everything, though, if you must.

Solve : System freezes up?

Answer»

Ive just installed a SATA II drive on my system, after the PATA gave me problems..
now whenever i run demanding programs such as Photoshop, Audio processing programs, DC++ server or demanding games( BF 2142, UT 2004) the sytem just FREEZES .. and i have to reset the system
this has never happened before , only when i ve installed the new SATA drive..
specs are as follows:

INTEL Prescott P4 3GHz Ht CPU
Intel 915GAV MB
Seagate 200Gb SATA II drive
Seagate PATA 80Gb drive
1Gb RAM in dual channel
Radeon X300 PCI E screen CARD ( oveclocked when playng games )
Windows XP pro SP2Did you copy your first hard drive to the new one, or did you do a freash install of Windows XP?

Do you have Adware/Spyware/Virus protection?Correct SATA drivers ? ?
PATA still in system ? ?

More info as we are info junkies here and tend to get crabby when we are not supplied our regular fix...

Not that we're addicted or anything or that there's anything wrong with that it's just...PATA is still in the system.. but not used..
ive installed a fresh copy of XP on it and updated to the newest updates.
bios says that the SATA is working fine but winows doesnt seem to agree ( becomes unresponsive),
i cant find any SATA drivers for the 915GAV on the intel site.. and there arnt any on the driver disc..
What about the SATA manuf. site ? ?just did a diagnostic from the manuf site.. using the boot disc image..

says the drives are fine..
the bios also says that the PATA is "first HDD" and the SATA is the "second HDD"
ive changed that bcoz winedoze is installed on the SATA..

dunno if winedoze just doesnt like my system...
Did the SATA manuf. site have a current driver for that drive ? ?
Have you tried setting the PATA as slave and does this change anything ? ?running a dvd burner and the PATA off the same cable...
PATA is the primary IDE master and the dvd is the slave, SATA is the primary HDD and boot drive..

only drivers i could find were for formatting new drives.. apparently winedoze has all the correct drivers..What is on IDE1 ? ?
I would still try and jumper it as a slave and see if this changes things...

Barring that i would remove the data needed from the PATA and wipe the OS off of it so it is no longer seen as a bootable device and then just use it for storage.making the dvd the master ??
the MB only has one PATA slot ( so im limited to 2 IDE devices )

the PATA has been formatted when the pc crashed 1st time ( thats why i bought the SATA )So no OS on the PATA drive ? ?

Another thing you might check is find the PATA drive in Control Panel / System / /Hardware / Device Manager and make sure it hasn't reverted from UDMA to PIO mode...

Personally i'm stumped right now.

Solve : Hide recipient address in Form Mail?

Answer»

Using form mail on my site to try and cut down on spam, but still have issues with "spam harvesters" finding the recipient address in the code within the form itself.

Example:

If you view the source code on one of my form pages you will find:

[emailprotected]">

Does anyone know a way to hide this information so it will not be visible?

Thanks in advance! How are you processing the EMAIL? Are you using a mailto: link, or are you using a server-SIDE language, such as PHP? In the former case, >this page< can help you to obfuscate your email address. In the latter, well your email address just goes in the code and is never seen by the browser. Thanks, Rob...

I don't have any "mailto:" links on the site...removed them a long time ago.

I use a clone of Matt Wright's Form Mail...server side, however, the email address is visible if the source code for the form page is viewed. That's what I'm trying to obscure.I'd say protect it by HTACCESS...
How?
Make it so that all your forms mail links bring your users to a page that's like this:

"On the next screen, you will be asked to provide a username and password. Please provide the following information:

Username: form
password: pass

This will allow you to use the sites Form Mail system and stop us from receiving SPAM"

You may WANT to change the information every few months in case someone programmes a bot that bypasses those accesses.

What about other issues?
Most browsers are capable with this kind of access.
HTACCESS is very secure since it runs on the server side (thanks Rob!)
But the one problem is that once you log in, you don't really need to log in again until the session is cleared or the browser is closed. But this isn't too big of a worry on all sites, just ones that are in need of a backup. (Various ways of forcing logouts have been made, and are getting interesting)
Anyways, for this quick spam stopper, you will not need a logout.

Instructions:
I don't know anything about HTACCESS. But I know my server provides it!
Read this then:
http://www.bc.edu/offices/help/meta-elements/doc/articles/html/WEB-pwssecurefolder.shtml

I know a lot about HTACCESS, but I don't know the Unix encryption to build the passwords.
No one is expected to. Use this tool to make the user:password lines for you:
http://spectrum.troy.edu/password/

My server doesnt support HTACCESS!
Then you will have to find other painful means. Like PHP protection. (I think Rob knows a lot about that)Sorry Saviour, FormMail is a Perl script which I have little experience of, preferring PHP. What you could do is remove the recipient address from your form and put it in the script instead. But the script is a little complicated, and I had difficulty trying to figure out exactly where to put the address.

To be HONEST, if you only want to accept email to one email address, this script is overkill. >Here's< a Perl script that would appear to fit your requirements more closely.

Try a Google search on WIRELESS webcam. Here's one find: http://www.grandtec.com/webcam.htmI understand you already have a webcam, but I'm not aware of a way you can configure a wired webcam to use wirelessly. I don't know what else to suggest.soybean is almost right...

Belkin has a product coming out (SUPPOSEDLY in September) that MAY, in fact, solve your problem, but expect to pay a little more "bling" than you'd like to. APPROXIMATE cost will be about $130.00.

Follow this link for more details:

http://www.ubergizmo.com/15/archives/2006/01/belkin_wireless.htmlI think he wanted to spend no ca$h.Well then...might I suggest a very long USB cable?I do not think that you are going to find anything cheap. Besides, whatever you do find will require batteries to power either the USB device, or the wireless cord device.

You may want to search eBay for "Wireless WebCam" (try variations of Webcam and web cam)

There are plain video cams that you can use as well, and that are cheaper. You may want to try other things like a regular VCR Video plug mini-camera or hook an old computer up to some cheap free dial up Internet and have a messenger send the picture from a computer in your room, to the one downstairs, or even have a website with a webcam protected by HTACCESS or something like that.......Have your parents teach little BROTHER about respecting other's property...

Thanks for the suggestion

What would you say about Webmin compared to cPanel?Webmin is quite a different tool to cPanel. It is rougher round the EDGES, but it is designed for more or less complete administration of a Linux server.

What do you mean, your package manager is broken? Get that fixed first. It is POINTLESS running a good distribution of Linux with a broken package manager. You NEED it for your software and security updates. Don't even think about trying to install something not designed for your PARTICULAR distribution if that distribution is broken. You'll end up installing the wrong C libraries or something and making your system completely unusable.Quote

The package manager just doesnt work... you right click the desktop, and click System, and select the manager, and nothing happens. I don't know how to fix it.
I cannot just reinstall Linux (Vector Linux) since I have files on my Linux computer that I cannot get onto a floppy or USB Flash Disk. I don't have it on the Internet, so security updates don't seem to matter. I don't have any software I would like to load onto Linux right now, so it doesnt seem that I really want to do anything else to it right now.
I am currently using a Windows PC. The MBHOSTING SERVICE for my website is a Linux/Unix server (with great security) and that is why I want to get it onto my Windows PC.
I need someone to open that archive, and put all its contents in a Windows .ZIP format file.
Once I have that file in that format, I can upload it to my site, and then run it on the web.

(Deep breath)
I just woke up, and have a headache. (so I'm not intending this post to make myself sound moody today)

I think the package manager is called GSLAPT PACKAGE MANAGER or something package manager.

I'm doomed. Its an ongoing circle.

I am going to have to get a professional server soon for a family website, and there are changes because of pricing that I may have to rule out cPanel and get something else.Aha. I wonder if Vector Linux is Debian based? (Can you confirm, Mark?)

If so, try the following, at a shell prompt: apt-cache search webmin - you'll get a list of all the available Webmin packages. If the list whizzes by too fast, you can use Ctrl+PgUp/PgDn to see more. Once you find packages you need, you install them with apt-get install package-name.But I still have no way to get it onto the net at this time.
How is that relevant?

Solve : .rar vs. .zip?

Answer»

whats the better compression format? .rar or .zip? which compresses more and extracts better?

TIA

unlovedwarriorI just tested this with 7-Zip.

Original size: 639 KB.

Sizes when compressed (normal compression):

.7z - 200 KB
.zip - 243 KB
.rar (done with WinRAR, since 7-Zip can only open .rar files) - 217 KB

As you can see, the winner is neither of your choices; 7z wins by 17 KB.

Oh, and none of these operations took more than 1.5 seconds apiece. ok where can i get this 7z dilbert??

thanks for testing for me

edit: you say normal compression, what other types are there? and whats the differences?http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=7-zip&btnG=Google+Search

You can compress the files more, but it takes longer. For example, my 639 KB file can be 7-zipped down to 198 KB with the 7-zip "Ultra" setting. But that takes longer and isn't really worth the trouble (2 KB difference from Normal to Ultra... who cares?). So I usually just use Normal.ok thanks alot RAR can use solid archives which gives much better compression when dealing with lots of files than zip.. does 7s do this also?so you want to use rar when compressing bigger files or alot of files at single TIME??Test #2: A folder with 830 KB worth of 7 pictures.

.7z - 829 KB
.rar - 829 KB
.zip - 828 KB

Hmm... doesn't work for pictures all that well.

My download folder: 71.9 MB of programs. 14 programs. (This takes a while, maybe I should not have done this...)

.7z - 71.6 MB

*TEST CANCELLED*

You KNOW what? This test proves that a lot of files can't really be all that compressed. Either that or my programs decided to mess up on their own... single files compress well...s ocompress each file by itself then put them in a folder and compress that folder to get maxium compression??I have no idea, actually. I wonder what's going on, here... let's see what the other regulars have to say about this. This is confusing me, now. :-?lol im just think if you do it that way you'll save more space but i dont know. cuz i have to reformat my laptop most LIKELY and i want to be able to put as much stuff on a disc as possibleOh dear!

Compression, in a nutshell, relies on being able to spot patterns in data. So instead of "000000000" the zip might say "10x'0'". That's a trivial and somewhat inaccurate example, but it conveys the gist of what's going on here.

Most zip formats seem to CREATE a file that consists of (1) a lookup table/key (2) the compressed data. Pick a chunk of data from (2) and use (1) to work out what it should be. Clear as mud?

So when you recompress an already compressed file, you're adding another lookup table to data that has virtually no repeating patterns. i.e. the data can't be compressed any further, and you're actually increasing the file size by adding another lookup table. You can prove this by recursively zipping a file. Eventually it would become larger than the original.

The quality of a zip algorithm is reflected in the compression ratio. My example above would actually work very badly. But maths whizzkids have come up with much cleverer ways of achieving this objective. 7-Zip and BZip are two of the most effective zip algorithms to come into the public domain in recent years.

Executables and JPEGs will compress very badly, because they have already been compressed. JPEG is a lossy compression format; executables are often compressed after compilation to reduce file sizes and to make it harder to reverse-engineer the code.thats interesting.. i learn every time i get on here and i love itCool.

I bought a philips webcam (SPC 200NC), tried installing via instructions it came with and by pluging it in and letting windows wizard take over following it's instructions. Let me add that any time I plug the camera in installed or not, it freezes my computer. I did the INSTALL, camera wouldn't work and still froze. I WENT to the website and installed the driver they had posted, no CHANGE. Called the company and did what they asked, no change. They told me to exchange Cam, did and same problem with new one. Personally I think it has SOMETHING to do with other drivers on my computer because when I turn my computer on, a comment pops up on the lower right saying something about not all drivers could be connected. I don't know which one's or how to find out or even if that's the cause. All I do know is I installed the camera as the instructions said and when I open the program it tells me no device is detected. Computer specs are:
Processor: AMD Athlon(tm) 64 Processor 3800+, MMX 3DNow, ~2.4Ghz
Memory: 958 RAM
System Model: EL 466AA-ABA a1330n
Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600)

Like I said, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

:-/Is this camera plugged in via a USB cable ? ?
If so try it with all other USB devices unplugged...
Re-boot and re-install the drivers for it.
Does this change anything ? ?

patio. 8-)also go to device manafer and see if there are any ? or X or !! by any of the devicesQuote

Solve : Outlook Client Not Sending Email?

Answer»

I am having a problem with Outlook and need some ideas of what might be going on.

When I am at home and log into the Outlook client, like I always have, I am seeing several old emails stacked up in my Outbox… I try to push them along and nothing happens… then I sent an email last night from home the person I was sending it to never GOT it. When I log in while in the office, nothing is in the Outbox and my email I sent the night before was not in my sent box. I'm logging into the outlook client not web outlook.

Quote

I'm logging into the outlook client not web outlook.

Do you simply mean you're starting/opening Outlook? What exactly is the logging on part? Is there a password involved? And, what does "web outlook" mean?
Whenever I go into my outlook mail I click on the outlook icon on my desktop. I have to type my company domain name\username and my password. Then my mail opens up and starts to update. Which is how I was checking my mail last night. But when I was replying to some of the messages I received, they didn't send. So I opened up internet explore and entered in the internet address to access my outlook account over the web. Example: https://ad.mycompany.com/exchange. In doing so I had to enter my company domain name\username and my password. Outlook opens up and my mail starts to update. The replied emails I originally sent out are sitting in this outbox. When I exit out of the Web Outlook and go back into my ORIGINAL outlook account the replied emails cannot be seen in either my sent items folder or my outbox. I hope I'm not making this to confusing.I'm sorry.... when I said Web Outlook, I was talking about Outlook Web Access.Well, I use Outlook but I'm not on an Exchange server, like you. So, I'm afraid I can't help you with this. Maybe someone else who is familiar with using Outlook on an Exchange server will post a reply. Do you have any tech support inside the company where you work? If somebody new is employed, who sets up their Outlook account?SEE that's just the problem. Everyone including our IT Dept. is stummped over this. Thanks for you help. If I figure this out I'll be sure to reply.Maybe Rob will drop by to assist. Well I still haven't figured out the problem. However, I do have some new information which might be useful. The night before last I was sending email from home and everything sent as normal. I thought whatever had happend earlier in the week may have some how been fixed. However, last night when I was sending email from home, they didn't send.... and sure enough when I logged into my Outlook Web Access account I was able to see the items in my outbox which is exactly what happened earlier in the week. The differance in the night where the mail was successfully sent and unsuccessfully sent is.... The successful night were emails which were new mail I was sending and the UNSUCCESSFUL night were emails I was sending as responses to emails I had received. Today I tested it in the office, and I responded to an email I received... It sent successfully. Now I did find something while googling the problem. Someone at one time had commented on Microsoft suggesting this problem is often caused by an interaction between Trend Internet Security and Outlook: Trend can modify a mail item in such a way that it will never get sent, even after Trend is uninstalled. My company Uses Trend Micro Office Scan.... could there be a connection between the two? I tried validating the comment with microsoft but haven't been able to get a response from anyone. The only problem I have with this solution is my problem seems to be LOCATION oriented. I'll be sure to inform you of any further updates. Thanks. The outbox and sent folders are, in a non-Exhange environment, local folders. So what you see on one computer you will never see on another. When you next have a stuck item in your outbox, from work try accessing your email both ways - Outlook and Outlook Web. Is there a difference between the contents of the two outboxes?

When a message fails to send from Outlook, you usually get an error message. You can view this by clicking the small icon in the bottom right hand corner of the Outlook window (and selecting "details"). Knowledge of the error code would help with fixing this.

I suspect that Trend is modifying the email headers - possibly corrupting the email address of the recipient in some way - and this is causing your Exchange server to reject the outgoing message. A workaround would be, when replying to a message, hit reply and then cut and paste everything into a NEW message, instead. If you do this, re-type the outgoing email address, rather than replying on cut and paste.

Hope this helps. Thanks for your suggestions Rob. However, I haven't experieced the problem with the email lately. I didn't change anything, it just started to work on it own. I wish I had a definate answer for you about what happened but I don't. I had a similar problem a few months ago and it seemed to fix itself then too.Heck, who cares, just so long as it's working!! Thanks for reporting back.

Solve : barebone puter systems?

Answer»

Could anyone share their own personal experience buying a barebone computer system online with services like ebay...etc... ? Was it a decent buy ? Is the quality of the components fairly good ? Thanks*eBay is one option, but there are others - Newegg, Tigerdirect, Computer Geeks, etc.

I prefer companies rather than individuals for a system, but that's just me.I agree, I was checking newegg ALL DAY today, the reviews by the buyers is great and insightful. Ebay had some pretty darn good " buy it now" prices. I couldn't build it any cheaper than I would checkout the MOBO the barebone system had installed and the reviews were terrible for the mobo though everything else was just fine. It seems one or the other has some type of drawback to it, I guess that is why they are so cheap ! I guess taking my time and researching will be my best payoff*.You are on your way to LEARNING the ways of the force. just make sure you get the stanards : at least 1gig of ram genric or name brand

at least 40 gig hdd

1.7ghz processor

onboard sound video will work if your not doing any gaming or audio or video editing

those are my standards for a barebone system, but it DEPENDS on what you are wanting to do now and in the furture

make sure everything can be upgraded later.

get an ok mobo that can support 2 or gigs of ramQuote

Solve : Cassette and PC recording?

Answer»

I am in the UK and I regularly record music and spoken word programmes from the radio to a cassette for later playback (I am 'downloading' stuff if you like). This is quite free and, as far as I know, quite legal.

What is the legal DIFFERENCE between this type of recording and downloading stuff via the internet to a PC?

I mention my UK residence as the law may be radically different elsewhere. As a general rule of thumb, if it's free, it's illegal. The "fair use" provisions enshrined in UK intellectual property law permit the recording of a broadcast solely for the purpose of viewing at a more convenient time. Once viewed/listened to, the recording should then be erased/deleted. You may find >this summary< useful.

A download from the internet will not necessarily consitute a broadcast under UK I.P. law, If it does, the above will apply to that download.

Hope this helps. Thanks for replies -

The link to UK Copyright Service was useful, my cassette recordings being 'acts that are allowed'.

It seems to me that the definition of 'broadcasts' is a bit in question. Is radio via Broadband a broadcast or is it something different? The vast majority of downloaded pop music must be for later playback and eventual erasure, to say nothing of the countless video clips we are invited to download.

Anyway, thanks again.Broadcast typically refers to a single item/stream being sent/scattered in many directions simultaneously. Contrast this with a music download sent to a single user as a response to a request by that user. That does not constitute a broadcast.I see what you MEAN about individual specific requests for download items - I suppose that artistic ownership of the material is a factor, as with CDs BOUGHT over the shop counter.

Radio programmes, however, whether spoken word or music (pop or CLASSICAL) that can be received on computers via Broadband seem to me to be fair game for legal downloading - they are broadcast to anyone who cares to listen.

I confess that I have no experience of downloading anything except software, so I may be talking a load of codswallop, but I would have thought that radio via Broadband (hundreds of stations, home and abroad) was how most of the ipod and mp3 recordings are made.

My inteest has been prompted by the recent news that a big music ownership company will soon be offering it's wares free.Quote

As a general rule of thumb, if it's free, it's illegal.

true, oh so true.Quote

I think we await some specific legislation on the point, but in the meantime, I would agree with you that an internet broadcast was just as OPEN to recording as any other kind of broadcast. And as with all broadcasts, your use of that recording is restricted by the laws of copyright. i.e. keeping the recording indefinitely would almost certainly be a breach of copyright.

Solve : Converting Word to PDF?

Answer»

Does anyone know how to convert a word doc to PDF format. I was told you have to USE a third party comverter's SOFTWARE. Is there any other options. I am designing a web SITE for my business and want to place some articles on one of the pages, I would prefer that they are in PDF to save on space.

Thanks
PDFs will not necessarily save on space.

To convert to PDFs, grap hold of PrimoPDF. You'll find a link in the software FAQ (see my signature). It effectively installs a printer DRIVER so that you can "print to PDF" from any program.I believe OpenOffice will allow the save of a Word file in pdf format as well. And OpenOffice documents are typically much smaller than the equivalent Word files, so you could just keep them in OO format, and TELL everyone to get OpenOffice! Thanks. Primo worked fine.Glad it worked for you.

Solve : need help with a picture?

Answer»

theres this picture that i want to reduce to 80x80 but everytime i try doing that (using paint) it just gets rid of most of the pictureIf you have another photo EDITING tool, it may well work better for this than Paint. With Paint, you'll need to use Stretch/Skew INSTEAD of Attributes, and change the number for percentage in the boxes for Horizontal and Vertical. To keep maintain the original ASPECT ratio, use the same percentage in both boxes. You'll have to experiment to try to get your image to 80x80, if you need that exact size.

If you have no other photo editing software, you might download the free IrfanView and try it.

Irfanview is a great piece of kit. For some other graphics PACKAGES, have a look in the software FAQ (SEE the link in my signature).

Solve : Web articles?

Answer»

I am building a web SITE. I have ONE page set aside for articles and links, I would like to have just the title of the article on the page as a hotspot. When some clicks on the title it will open a acrobat reader and can be read in a PDF format. This way I will not have to go into this page every week to change the articles. People can choose the article they wish to read. My thought process is to save the article in PDF and place the title on the page as a hot spot. I do not how to make it work. Any suggestions

Thanks

Have you uploaded PDF files to your web server? Obviously, that must be done. Then, just put a hyperlink to it on your web page in the same manner you would link to other web pages. If you created a separate directory on your web server for the PDF files, then you need to include the path in the hyperlink.Yes, I'm struggling to see the problem here... If you want SOMETHING a bit more automated, that would call for some server-side programming.

A bit more information about what you;'d like to achieve, please?I have not chosen anyone to host my web site, am most likely going to choose HARD hat hosting
http://www.hardhathosting.com/?id=worldstart
The nature of my business requires that all web pages and articles receive prior approval before being able to publish the web site to the general public. So it is to my advantage to limit my web pages to 7 or 8
I am thinking ahead because in a one to two years from now I will have only about an hour a day to devote to my website. So I am getting my article ready and approved so I can easily go in and type in a headline (as a hotspot or link) so anyone wanting to read an article can simply click on the headline and it will open in PDF. This way INSTEAD of having to create a page for every article, I can have one page that will list every story headlines. I was told that archiving full articles on a server can get expensive.
Open to suggestions.
How can people access the articles if they're not stored somewhere on the web server?

Solve : HP Imaging Device Functions 5.3?

Answer»

I see this listed in my Add or Remove Programs list. (WINDOWS XP Home SP2.) I've tried to research it with Google, help and support, but have found no information that I feel leaves me understanding it with confidence. Probably obviously, my PC is an HP (Pavilion a1220n), and my monitor is also an HP (vs 15). My printer is Canon (Pixma ip1600). I have no devices that I interface with my PC, such as cameras, camcorders, etc. This program is a monster; 530 MB. Does anyone know with certainty if I can UNINSTALL it safely? Thank you to all who take the time to reply. Sounds like a scanner program to me...if you don't have a scanner, dump it.

patio. 8-)I ALWAYS appreciate your help, Patio. (I always appreciate everyone's help). Therefore, I hope that you can put yourself in my place and not be offended. "Sounds like" does not give me quite enough confidence to completely uninstall the program. Perhaps others can shed some light? Thank you, Patio!!rlprlp...

Check the programs on your PC to see if you have HP Image Zone installed on your HP computer.

If you do, like patio said...this is probably software for an HP imaging device like a scanner, photo printer, or all-in-one. If you don't have an HP imaging device installed on your PC, then you can safely remove the program.

Just don't take our word for it...visit HP at the following URL for more inforamtion about the program:

http://www.hp.com/united-states/iz/how_to_tell.html?jumpid=reg_R1002_USENThank you for the link, Saviour. I never saw anything like that in my research. I'm still learning how to "hone" my searching skills. No, the only thing that is HP on my computer (other than the computer itself) is the monitor and keyboard. I will take a shot that it is safe to uninstall... Acronis is standing by to save my hide... Thank you, patio and Saviour. Quote

No problem and you're Welcome...you made a wise investment in Acronis

patio. 8-)

Actually seeing that is an HP machine it might be the backup program itself...
Let's do some more research.Oh, yeah? Okay, I haven't deleted it yet. I'm beginning to think it is for HP brand devices like you said at first. In fact, I bet if I ever did buy an HP device, it would come with that same program on a CD, and it's just been pre-installed for my "convenience". Heck, the CD would probably make some silly window: "Because you have an HP PC, you're ready to start enjoying your fine new product immediately..."!!! I'm in no hurry; I'll wait a few days to see if something interesting comes up. Thank you, patio.Nope you don't need it. Keep the Acronis image handy anyway. Not only Saviour and patio; now Rob himself... That clinches it; it's out of here! Thank you to all. NUTS, I wimped out when I was about to uninstall it, because this warning box came up (text copy/pasted from box): LOSS OF FEATURES: Uninstall of HP Imaging Device Functions will remove key features, including HP Image Transfer from cameras and device photo slots, support for device buttons such as Scan, Email, and Instant SHARE, and device status.

To remove HP Imaging Device Functions, click continue. (End of paste.)

Support for device buttons? Does this mean that the Media Controls on my HP 5187-7583 keyboard will stop working? (You know; pause/play, volume, etc. when I listen to music on WMP 10.) No they are as listed all for "imaging" devices = cameras and card readers etc....

Fire awayOkay; I'm gonna do it. I might wait a day or two to make sure there are no problems, but I will come back with one final POST in this thread to let you know how it went. (To anyone reading this: it's really rude to be helped and then not come back to post results and say "Thank you".) I can't wait...the suspense is killing me.

Let us know...Looks like I just missed you, Saviour, but you'll be back. All went well. Thank you to all who helped me with this. I've heard more horror stories about people who think that they are going to clean up their computers by deleting things that they THINK they don't use or need; but you guys are more than well aware of that, hence the willingness of all of you to be so helpful. Thank you again. You're more than welcome...

Solve : Wirless Router/Internet problem?

Answer»

Please speek slowely and use small words I do not understand computers and have gotten in over my head. Thanks in advance for any help.

Just upgraded from dial up internet to Fiber Optic Broadband, Broadband company ran the cable to my house into a "Gateway" that they say works like a cable modem but because of the Fiber Optic a cable modem won't work. From that gatway it GOES to a wirless router I have installed and spent 2+ hours on the phone with ZYTEL setting up with my LAPTOP wired to it. Long story short my laptop will go through the router and access the internet if it is physically plugged in with an Ethernet cable. Wirlessly it won't get online, it allows me to locate and connect to my wirless connection but when I go to open my browser it prompts me to utilize my dial up internet or work Off Line. I hooked up a wirless USB device to one of my desktops and followed the set up wizard that was with the device, that desktop conects to my connection and allows me online, so I know the router is working. I tried installing the USB device on another desktop and am having the same problem as my lap top. It allows me to connect to my wirless connection but won't let me on line. I know this is most likely a setting on the individule computers but have spent too MANY hours looking on my own.

Please Help. Thanks

If you're using Internet Explorer as your web browser, go to Tools, Internet Options, and select the Connections tab. Which ITEM is checked there?

Also, is the laptop farther away from the router than the computer with which you succeeded in getting a wireless connection? Does your laptop give any indication of signal strength? As far as the laptop goes the signal strength is Excellent, as for the internet connection I will have to come back to that one, I'm at work until the morning and won't know unless I get ahold of my wife and have her check. Thanks for the speedy reply, I'll be back.OK, I'm back,
In my internet options it appears to be set up for dial up. Can someone give me step by step instructions for making this work for wireless? Thanks in advance!

Solve : Accessing Outlook Folder From Another Computer?

Answer»

I have added a second desktop PC at home and have set up a wiress network with my existing desktop. Both have Outlook 2000. My goal is to access my email from either computer.

Is this possible? And, you also mean to have Outlook synchronized between the two computers so that they both have EXACTLY the same email. Is that right?Outlook does not allow two separate processes to open the same Outlook data store, so you can't just share the .PST file (unless you know that both computers won't be using it simultaneously).

The most elegant solution for email sharing is to use IMAP rather than POP3 to connect to your email provider. You'd need to delete and recreate your accounts, selecting IMAP instead of POP3. This will only work if your provider allows IMAP access.

IMAP basically keeps a master copy of all emails on the server, and keeps track of which emails have been downloaded to which computer, etc. Excellent for multi-computer emailing.Quote

so you can't just share the .pst file (unless you know that both computers won't be using it simultaneously).

I don't think that would be an issue in our household. The wife accesses email only in the mornings, and I only in the evenings.

Well there's your answer then.

But surely you and your wife have different email addresses, CONTACTS databases, etc?Quote

But surely you and your wife have different email addresses, contacts databases, etc?

We don't actually. Is that abnormal?

So the .pst file can be shared between two machines?
Absolutely - just share the containing folder. You'll get an error if both machines try to open the file at the same time, but other than that, no problem. This is what my wife and I do in fact. We have separate email accounts, but we share my contacts so she has to open my .pst file to access them.Okay, so I've shared the .pst file. I've installed Outlook 2000 on my second machine.

Now, is it correct that I have to navigate Outlook on my second machine to the .pst file on my primary machine? And how?File-->Open, would you believe? You might WANT to map the shared folder to a network drive first, to make things slightly simpler.

Once you've got the .pst file open, right-click on the root of the personal folders tree. Select the box that says something like "deliver pop3 mail to this folder". Close and reopen Outlook. You can now close the other personal folders (right-click; close).

Solve : Windows XP2000 home auto shutdown routine?

Answer»

This is my system

windows 2000 xp home
sevice pack 2
AMD athlon (tm) 64 processor
3000+
1.81 GHZ, 512 MB of RAM

Issue - I have 2 hard drives, one from my old wdw98 system I use for extra file STORAGE only, but it is actually quite inactive, PLUS my normal hard drive with windows XP. A while ago something happened where WDW 98 became my main system and I had my IT guy at work fix it. The start up routine changed for some reason and the slave become the primary, the primary the slave, yadda, yadda. No one knows why.

Everything is fine now, EXCEPT that I have lost the auto shutdown routine where the actual PC turns itself off when I initiate the shutdown routine.

Initially the shutdown routine would hang up I and used this web site which suggested I disable the PMC (power management) and this fixed the lock up problem. Now I just get the message that the PC is safe to turn off, but I have to do it manually. I would like to get back to where it shut off on its own. Of COURSE this is not a major problem but I am interested to learn why this has happened and how to fix it. Thanks for any help. There is no such thing as "Windows XP2000 home" or "windows 2000 xp home" or "wdw98".
I'm confused , but that doesn't take much...are you now running Win98 ? ?
There is no such thing as Win2000 XP Home...
How are you using a website to shut down the machine ? ?

Clearer info and someone will be along shortly...

patio. 8-)Ok ladies and Gents,

Windows XP, (home edition, not professional)
WDW98 is Windows98 in my shorthand.
I am NOT using a WEB site to shut down, I used the ADVICE from this WEB site to fix a problem. I hope this is clearer.

Now, does someone have an idea how to fix? The situation may be hosed and a reinstall would be faster and surer.

This si based on the limited information and the unknown "fixes" by other people.

Photoshop? The GIMP?

What do you want to do?No, I don't know Photoshop, netither I know GIMP.

Actually I want to place one image within the middle part of a big image
(the big image has some blank space available within it.)

So I am looking for a software (free) that will do it.

You can do this with Paint, although it's not fun:

Edit: Do you have any photo editing software, other than Paint?Ok, I have done it through paint, but it does not look good. :-/

YEAH, I have got another utility

that you can get from here.

But reading the help file of that, I guess learning it is not in EVERYBODY's reach. You might try IrfanView. I haven't used it but it has a reputation as a good free photo editor. I see they have a FORUM; you might seek help there if you want to try it and have questions.irfanview should work fine, ive used it a BIT. pretty much any photo editing software will do that simple task. programs such as photoshop and paint shop pro will let you simply drag and drop the photos on to each other. The GIMP has fairly good selection tools that will enable close feathered cropping of non-rectangular images. It is free. It also has a steep learning curve for anyone not familiar with PhotoShop, But you name it, it can do it, pretty much. Follow the LINK in my signature to the software FAQ. Look under "Graphics".
