Solve : Supernatural,UFO's, weird stuff, etc.....?

This is a LINK to a pretty interesting radio show that comes on late at night (coast to coast) that deals from religion to UFO's. Many different [highlight]supernatural subjects [/highlight]are discussed and there are some un-real photo's SUBMITTED from listeners. If you had seen an amazing photo in the past and can't find it, a search here might just have it. If you ever drove a big-truck late at night you know about this show.

I opted for the link to the purple tomatoes in your future:

Deus Ex, but like I said, Illuminati is a general term for any group of people who claim to be illuminated..

Anyhow, Deus Ex was somewhat influenced by the the book "The Man Who Was Thursday" Written by G.K Chesteron. Great book.

Solve : Re-saved doc?

I have a huge PROBLEM. I accidentually erased my whole document and I saved it. The problem is: I have no backup of the document (I know, stupid). Is there any way to restore that document?Quote

I mean, I earesed my whole text, not the file itself. I actuadentuly selected EVERYTHING and with without seeing it a pressed a letter on my keyboard with my ELBOW just before safing :sI can feel your pain but all I can suggest is GOOGLE on undelete files and start searching for a tool that might recover your file. I believe, in the mean time, I would avoid using that computer if possible. Any new saving of files is going to reduce the chances of being able to recover it. You would have to access the hard drive for surface reading... thats all I can really tell you. Then you would have to find where the file was. Thats why I have backup and restore programs on my computer.some where on your computer there is a place where the auto-save stuff goes but im not sure where. if you have auto save enabledhttp://www.amset.info/tips/office-recovery.asp

maybe this will helpWord can be set to auto-save and it used to save the file if a sudden power outtage occured, etc. I don't know if that feature has been eliminated because it was too helpful or what. The auto-save feature is still part of WORD but it must be set as enabled. I believe it is set as enabled by default. But, I'm not sure if it is going to be of any help in this situation, given that the file was overwritten by the user.

To check your setting for this feature, go to Tools, Options, Save, and see whether the box for "Save AutoRecover info every:" is checked. I'm referring to Word 2003.PC File inspector, try it. But it can only find the file if it has been deleted. However, you may able to relocate a temporary file used by Word.. Doubtful, but happy hunting!

Solve : windows media error?

Answer»

ok LAST night i tried to play a dvd that ive played with WM ALREADY but i got this error so i just used another program..

im thinking its a codec thingYou can change the region of the DVD player Somewhere in the options section.ok thanks what would cause it to changeHaven't got a clue. I never mess with those settings because you can only do it 3 times or so. I would recommend against USING it at all.Its the kind of DVD... the DVD is for a differet country, with (ultimeltly) a different DVD format and DVD player... you should be able to search options...it shouldnt be i bought at a US kmart (but then again look where i got it)Drive to that region of the World and play it there.it doesnt tell me what region thoughJust drive around and test it every 1000 miles or so...lolQuote

Just drive around and test it every 1000 miles or so...

What if he can't find any DVD players? It could be a black market DVD or erroneously shipped to the wrong region.

I am in favor of the road trip idea, HOWEVER. Or just take it back.nay cuz it works just fine in my dvd players and with ithere media players but thats what you get for using an ms product especially as it comes free with the buggy os.

Solve : CD problems?

Answer»

Hiya, i bought a music cd recently and it plays fine in my cd player, but when i wanted to transfer it to my IPOD i tunes cant recongise it and when i look at the cd on the comp it says its 600+mb but nothing can be seen. Tried TURNING on hidden folders and still nothing. any idea how i can do this, never had this kinda problem before. Can any other applications read the CD, eg Windows Media Player or Winamp?
What OS are you USING?You need to copy the music to your compuer first, by using Windows Media, iTunes, Winamp, or another programt hat can copy CD's... I reccomend using the Rip tool in Windows Media Player since it will go to your My Music folderi am on xp and the problem is that it wont show up in itunes or wmp, and the songs are there as they play on me cd player.Do you get an error message when you try to read it with wmp or itunes?
If so, what is it?
Have you had problems with the CD drive before or has it been OK up until now?
Do any other music CDs work with the CD drive?no other cd problems, no error messsages a video thats on it shows up, was talking to a mate with the same cd and he mnetioned something about a copyright thing on it to stop any copys being made. any idea how to get around this?If it's a Sony produced CD it may have some really evil copyright things on it, look up Sony BMG rootkit on Google
Otherwise it may still have copyright, no idea how to get round it
SorryOK, it's been over 24 hours so now you can TELL us what the CD is.It sounds like the codecs and encoding issues Apple has purposly caused...

Solve : a sad, disgusting, and shameful state of affairs?

Answer» http://money.cnn.com/blogs/yourturn/2006/09/worst-ways-to-get-fired.htmlIt's a sad, disgusting, and shameful state of affairs. Why did you name the topic "haha"?Sorry. I shall change it!!An dwhy can';t I get the pic to wrk???What has happend to me twice looking back now~ could seem funny!
I had just participated in a 50k "experiment" my old company paid for to increase worker PRODUCTION & value. It consisted of all managers and a few office employees (myself) being the later. I was HAND picked and only like 24 at the time and contributed greatly to this brain washing scheme and THOUGHT "I was da MAN" being called on for more responses in class than most. 1 week after completing this ISO-related European brain washing ( Adizze Process-something) , One of the owners 2 SONS who ran the company, walked up behind me @ 4:55pm on Friday. He laid the your fired papers on my desk and walked away not saying a word! The next Monday I found out I was the 1st of 7 company firings. To all the young people out there, work hard and never expect a thing from no-one. Times have changed and there is NO LOYALTY in American business since the 70's, and try doing something that could save yourself bigtime. It's called a SAVINGS ACCOUNT +Use it! Solve : Transfering large files from a zip disc?

Answer»

Hello,

I have large manuscripts saved on a zip disc that I retrieved from my old computer. I can open these files in Word, but I do not know how to transfer them from the zip file into My Documents. I'm sure it must be a simple procedure, but I am at a loss. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

I would still like to keep the files in the zip as well as have them in My Documents. I know I can copy/paste, but that would be extrememly time-consuming since these files are around 100,000 words each.

Thank you for your help.

Regards,
KazAside from copy and paste, once they are opened in Word click file and "SAVE as", and pick the documents folder.Thank you very much Neil. I will give it a go.
Regards,
KazOne way to do this is simply open two Explorer windows, one for the files on the zip drive and one being My Documents. Then, just drag the files from one window to the other. Try this with one file FIRST to verify that Windows copies the file to My Documents rather than moving it. If it copies, you can select multiple files and copy them over altogether.

Another way: open an Explorer windows for the zip drive. Select all the files you WANT to copy to My Documents. Right click on one of those files, select Send To, then select My Documents.Dear Soybean,
Thank you very much for the INFORMATION. It is deeply appreciated. You and Neil have been a big help.
Regards,
KazAll these methods are really just variations to simple copy and pasting... I'd be suprised if there is a significant time difference between the methods?

Edit: did you mean copy and pasting inside Word? The OP seems to have meant copy/paste from an existing Word file to a blank Word file. Note that he said, "...that would be extrememly time-consuming since these files are around 100,000 words each." That would be the slowest, most cumbersome way of copying those files from the ZIP drive to his hard drive.

The Save As technique you mentioned would be much easier than the above copy/paste technique but would still be slow and tedious if he has a lot of files, since each file would have to opened and then saved USING Save As.

The two methods I mentioned would be easier and faster, especially since he could copy multiple files at one time. Yes, but I thought he meant copy and pasting in the usual method rather than in Microsoft Word (didn't occur to me till after), which is why I was a bit confused by his problem

Alan <>< HI Alan,
I am DSL. Use to have RoadRunner but recently moved and it is not available here.
I read on the internet today and found info on turning off my zone alarm. I did that earlier today and have not had to reboot all day. Maybe my problem is solved. Thank you Alan, for helping me. Newbegno one ever make fun of me again !!! Y, Hoo made fun of you??As is typical, newbeg, members have turned your thread into their own personal conversations. Are you accessing the WEB without a firewall now? You DO NOT want to be doing that! [highlight]"I read on the internet today and found info on turning off my zone alarm. I did that earlier today and have not had to reboot all day."[/highlight]

rlprlp is correct. Unless you have a firewall (either 3rd party like Zonealarm) or the built-in Windows firewall, you should not be on the internet.

Check to see if your Windows firewall is on. (Start/Control Panel/Firewall) You'll only see this if you have SP2 on your computer. To check that go to Control Panel again and double-click the "System" icon. The opening page will show you if you have SP1 or SP2.

If you don't have SP2 go here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Download and install

The other thing you can do is learn how to configure Zonealarm and permit it to let you on the Internet. It takes a little doing but you'll be oh-so-grateful once you're behind it.

Solve : Can't upload...?

Answer»

Hi, I'm a newbie here and I am in need of some help (of course )...

About 3 weeks ago I noticed that I could no longer UPLOAD files (pics) to most sites.
I have tried many ways to do it... upload tools from certain sites to upload to their site (like Flickr) , direct UPLOADS from the site (using browse), FTP to my own site etc...

However, there are some things that do work so it MAKES it even more confusing for me... I can upload from Picasa to Blogger (but not Picasa to Google web album), I can at times send an e-mail with picture attachments but often it does not work.

The messages that I get vary from TIMEOUTS to can't find internet connection (I am connected though).. the files are never large often about 100k so I don't think that it is a size issue...

I have a Laptop running XP pro, I recently reformatted (last week) and even that didn't help. I do have a wireless router but haven't changed any of the settings...

Any ideas what it could be?If you're using a fresh Windows installation and still suffering from the problem, either your router or modem is on the blink, or your ISP has messed up your connection. Either way you should ring them up for advice and tests etc.

I have a verizon premium Isp service in New Hampshire. They give u a choice of Yahoo or Msn as their default package. They are pushing u to take the yahoo for some reason. Yahoo is "trying" to compete a little with google. They have a very good email program (I love & use it as my default) and 2 others. Yahoo is trying to push their email program as ONE of the safest and reliable on the market. I am guessing it is upgrading and doing stuff to it and it is some kind of redirect. NOTHING seemed to change from the 1st page to the 2nd though ? I do not care so much for their norton virus scan on their emails though, sometimes it freezes up on SENDING....

It's a good thing. They're redirecting you to a secure page. Notice the URL begins with https instead of http. https indicates a secure mode; your browser will also show some indication of being in secure mode, such as the lock at the bottom (the status bar) appearing in a locked status, for Internet Explorer. So, you're working in the same secure mode used by banks and other financial sites that use that mode; it uses encryption to make data transmission more secure.

I do not have to use the COX home page, or any of their services unless I choose to. Other ISP's are just in bed with Yahoo or MSN or whatever, but you can fight your way out of that. Quote

Solve : U.S., UK scientists invent invisibility cloak?

Answer»

This is real interesting and kinda scary! What do u think ?

U.S., UK scientists invent invisibility cloak
In "The Lord of the Rings" elves gave Frodo The Ringbearer a cloak of invisibility to shield him from Orcs, Harry Potter had a similar garment, and the Romulans used a "cloaking" device to sneak up on CAPT. James Kirk and the spaceship Enterprise in "Star Trek" episodes and movies.

The "Invisible Man" is a classic 1933 scifi flick adapted from an H.G. Wells ("War of the Worlds," "The Time Machine") novel in which a scientist discovers a way to BECOME invisible, then becomes murderously insane. The movie was resurrected in 1992 by director John Carpenter, then sequeled by "Hollow Man."

Elves, hobbits, witches, aliens, mad scientists -- all fiction or FANTASY, but now researchers from the United States and Britain are making invisibility a reality and successfully cloaked a copper cylinder.

"We have built an artificial mirage that can hide something from would-be observers in any direction," said cloak designer David Schurig, a research associate in Duke University's electrical and computer engineering department.

The cloaking of a cylinder from microwaves comes just five months after Schurig and colleagues published their theory that it should be possible. Their work is reported in a paper in Friday's issue of the journal Science.

"We did this work very quickly ... and that led to a cloak that is not optimal," said co-author David R. Smith, also of Duke. "We know how to make a much better one."

For their first attempt, the researchers designed a cloak that prevents microwaves from detecting OBJECTS. Like light and radar waves, microwaves usually bounce off objects, making them visible to instruments and creating a shadow that can be detected.

The first working cloak was in only two dimensions and did cast a small shadow, Smith said. The next step is to go for three dimensions and to eliminate any shadow.

Viewers can see things because objects scatter the light that strikes them, reflecting some of it back to the eye.

"The cloak reduces both an object's reflection and its shadow, either of which would enable its detection," Smith said.

The cloak is made of metamaterials, which are mixtures of metal and circuit board materials such as ceramic, Teflon or fiber composite.

In an ideal situation, the cloak and the item it is hiding would be invisible. An observer would see whatever is beyond them, with no evidence the cloaked item exists.

Natalia M. Litchinitser, a researcher at the University of Michigan department of electrical engineering and computer science who was not part of the research team, said the ideas raised by the work "represent a first step toward the development of FUNCTIONAL materials for a wide spectrum of civil and military applications."

Joining Schurig and Smith in the project were researchers at Imperial College in London and SensorMetrix, a materials and technology company in San Diego, Calif.

The research was supported by the Intelligence Community Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program and the United Kingdom Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

patio. 8-)

Inaccurate?Yes the initial web was a joint effort between the 8 largest Universities in the U.S.

It actually flourished for years before the Military saw and realised how it could be used.

So to say the internet was designed for military use before it was released to the public is indeed innaccurate at best...umm sorry to disagree patio....

http://www.pbs.org/transistor/background1/events/arpanet.html

there is alot more where that came from...ARPANET was never a public access tool. While it 's early work was creating the foundation the internet as we know it came out of University efforts.

patio. 8-)it was a joint effort for those universities because they designed it for the US Department of Defense. aka "military use".

ARPANET was not for public access because it was soley designed for military use, supporting my statement that the internet was first designed for the military.

in addition, i never mentioned the military designed the internet, i merely stated that the internet was originally designed for the military.

Solve : cache and DRAM?

Answer»

I have a question why is it that cache memory doesnt need an ADDRESS but DRAM does?ummm does this help

2.27 Cache terminology, what does it mean?
[From: [emailprotected] (Cameron L. Spitzer)]

Why cache improves performance

Today's microprocessors ("uPs") need a faster memory than can be made with economical DRAMS. So we provide a fast SRAM buffer between the DRAM and the uP. The most popular way to set it up is by constructing a "direct mapped cache," which is the only setup I'll describe here.

Generic motherboard cache architecture

The direct mapped cache has three big features:

1. a "data store" made with fast SRAMs,

2 a "tag store" made with even faster SRAMs, and

3. a comparator.

The data store is the chunk of RAM you see in the motherboard price lists. It holds "blocks" or "lines" of data recently used by the CPU. Lines are almost always 16 bytes. The address feeding the cache is simply the least significant part of the address feeding main memory. Each memory location can be cached in only one location in the data store.

There are two "policies" for managing the data store. Under the "write-back" (or "copy-back") POLICY, the master copy of the data is in cache, and main memory locations may be "stale" at times. Under "write-through", writes go immediately to main memory as well as to cache and memory is never "stale."

The tag store mantains one "word" of information about each line of data in the data store.

In a "write-back" or "copy-back" cache, the tag word contains two items:

1. the part of the main memory address that was *not* fed to the data store, and

2. a "dirty" bit.

A write-through cache doesn't need a dirty bit. The tag store is addressed with the most significant address bits that are being fed to the data store. The tag is only concerned with the address bits that are used to select a line. With a 16 byte line, address bits 0 through 3 are irrelevant to the tag.

An example: The motherboard has 32 MB main memory and 256 KB cache. To specify a byte in main memory, 25 bits of address are required: A0 through A24. To specify a byte in data store, 18 bits (A0 through A17) are required. Lines in cache are 16 bytes on 16 byte boundaries, so only A4 through A17 are required to specify a line. The tag word for this system would represent A18 through A24 (plus dirty bit). The tag store in this system would be addressed by A4 through A17, therefore the tag store would require 16 K tag words seven bits wide. The dirty bit is written at different times than the rest of the tag, so it might be housed separately, and this tag store might be built in three 16K X4 SRAMs.
I SMELL homework...Yes, I am sure it is in the textbook.

Solve : Constant rebooting?

Answer»

I just installed another 512MB of RAM into my computer. It keeps rebooting. can someone help?
If you need the REST of the specs, just say so.Is it rebooting automatically, or do you have time to access anything before it reboots. It could have something to do with autoexec, although if it wasn't happening before...try taking the new ram out and seeing if it continues to do so. can ur mobo support the extra ram? is it the right type of ram? do the two ram speeds match up? ex. both ddr 400 if the problem STOPS when u take the new stick out try putting TH enew one and the old out and seeing if it restarts. if not then put the old one back in and try it with the new one in place.

unlovedwarriorDo we GET any hints about the motherboard, the operating system and the RAM you purchased, or we just have to guess?

If it was fine and the problems all started when the RAM was installed, it is most likely a mismatch, but some more info is reqauired. See below.

Solve : compaq 700z?

hi everyone i have 2 compaq presarios 700z and i need a service manual for them. i have spent a lot of time looking for this manual and i can find hundreds of them but nothing in the 700 series. i would like to know if anyone knows the reason for this or is there another model that is very similiar. there are lots of cd and manuals on ebay that say they cover all the compaq laptops but when you look through the list the manual covers it goes presario 350, 900 series and up. i need the manual to try and salvage one of these.

thankyou
jimTake a look here: Compaq Presario 700Z Notebook PC: Manualsthanks soybean but they were of no help i have been there already. thanks for your time and info though
jimIf you'd like to describe exactly what problems you're having, perhaps we can help.E-mail Hewlett Packard support. They own Compaq now.i was able to talk online with a hp rep and he set me up with a dowloadable manual. the manual is awesome i have the puter totally disasembled already. unfortunatly my mother board is junk. now onto the job of trying to get one reasonable from ebay. thanks for all the support you guys. hey iam looking at a few of these compaq 700z puters on ebay most of them do not power up. has anyone had any experience with the non power up deal most of these are SOLD as is and they state that it could be the mother board CAUSING the no power up issue. i think i,am going to have to TAKE a chance and get one and hope the mother board is good to put my spare together any more input will be appreciated guys

thanks
jimJust recycle the case and the drives and get what your budget can handle...No reason it needs to be a Compaq any longer.

I would recommend though a NEW PSU for any new build.

patio. 8-)This is a laptop right? You will not have any fun with this project and can damage even more, if that's possible, if you have no experience with laptop disassembly.

Compaq laptops are strictly low end and not very durable at all, ALTHOUGH there are a few exceptions, I'm sure.

There is a reason a broken computer is listed as no warranty. Don't spend too much on this project.Ooops..laptop.

Solve : Trial version window?

Answer»

I have an annoying problem. and was wondering if anyone could assist.

I downloaded a trial version of a program and tried it for a few days. I decided I didn't want to purchase it, so I uninstalled it. No problem. But I keep getting a box come up, when I first load WINDOWS, that my trial version has expired. Do I want to purchase. I'd like to get rid of this pasty window. I searched all through the registry and it seems all traces of it are gone. At least by the name I know it as.

Any ideas what else I could try? I emailed the folks I got it from, but no word from them yet. where is this window stored on my HD? why can't I find it?If its COMING up on start up the most LIKELY way to stop it is ,

Run Msconfig
From Msconfig , you can CHANGE what programs Start on your computer. you might see it in one of the Lists
The Start up list in MSconfig includes the Start up folder and the Run Key in the Registry.

Startup => You can find this in the All Programs Menu. if its there just remove the short Cut, and it should stop Running, also if there is a short cut there , if you check it properties it will lead you to the File location

The Run Key in the Registry.
HKLM>Software>Microsoft>Windows>Current Version>Run
Look for the file path to the Program , if you don't know which one it might be Edit the key and add a ' to the start of the string, that will stop it from working ,and will be easy to undo if its the wrong one

It may be running as a service in Interactive mode, so check your Services, to see if its there.

Download and install CrapCleaner to clean your system; it also has an easy to use start-up tool.Another vote for Total Uninstall...Quote

I deleted all of the, but still the window appears. I guess the app places a obscure files somewhere on the HD. Just don't know what to look for. I'll try the crapcleaner next. maybe that will do something. But thanks for all the assistance.

Thanks for the recommendation of Acronis True Image. I downloaded the trial v9.0 & tried it out. Very nice

I checked the price on their site then compared Newegg. About $20 cheaper. Gonna get it today.

Alan <>< You won't be sorry. You're right

Bought & downloaded today and works like a champ

Thanks again

Alan <>< I create an image once a week...save it to another partition.

Once a month i burn an image to DVD...2 copies.

I also use their built in tool to test the validity of the image files before i save/burn them.

Sounds like overkill but it's a good system for my 3 machines.

Remember a BACKUP discipline only works if you remember to do it.

Congrats on a fine purchase....and kudo's to GX1_Man for savin you some dough !Basically, to back up my more important STUFF [my business info]I run a program called 2ND Copy (Centered.com) to back up my QBPro, Outlook & my business to a hard drive on my server. I then, each Friday, burn that to a cd/rw.

I also backup a bunch of other stuff, like downloaded programs, drum videos [I play drums] and other oddities as well.

The main reason I wanted this software is when I run into a situation where a client wants to move their data [OS & all programs, files, etc.] to a new drive. What I LOVE about Acronis is that you can move everything from a larger drive to a SMALLER one. Why one WOULD do this is beyond me, but it has the cabapilities to do so. But mainly for that reason.

I'll be playing with it's full capacity as time goes by but for now I'm EXTREMELY please with it.

Yours really isn't overkill, just thorough thinking.

"While not all SENIOR citizens possess Sainte-Hilaire's GRIT and gusto, many are discovering that video games are more than just entertainment.

They reinforce what a variety of scientific studies suggest: that video games can help keep aging brains nimble, encourage social interaction and quicken reaction times."

Solve : Wireless Network issues?

Answer»

I recently had a wireless network set up at my home so that I could access the internet wit my laptop(because My PC is deceased/Fried). Everything was going fine until I hit a little snag. Firefox coudn't load WEB pages, nor could live messenger connect, even though I had good signal strenths. This usualy happens about 20 minutes into a connection. The strange thing is, if I'm already connected to live messenger, sometimes firefox still craps out and is unable to load web-pages, and if I disconect live messenger, it can't reconnect. After scanninglive messenger it gave me a diagnostic that said it migt have something to do with DNS. I can get the internet BACK if I shut down the system and my routers at the same time and restart them both, but it never lasts. If anyone can help me with this it would be greatly appreciated because I need to get this working and I was futzing with it for about five and a half hours last night trying to keep it working.( Looking through help files, shutting down and restarting, disconecting and reconnecting) :-? I've got a lot of work to do and I can't do it without a network connection

Abe [smiley=dankk2.gif]Let me guess ? u use Windows XP right ?
Start by connecting your laptop to the router by ethernet cable. (Just buy a cheapo network cable if you don't have one). See if the same problem arises. It's worth spending a tiny amount on a cable before we talk about replacing a possibly faulty router...Yes, it's Xp. I MANAGED to use the net when I plug directly into the router with the patch cable for starters, and it works on my pc now too(had motherboard and hard drive replaced this afternoon), But my wireless net still bugs out every 20 minutes or so. It looks to me like the routers are ok when you plug into them.....

it's about ten minutes later and now I can't connect to firefox through the patch cable. The strange thing is, I can still use this firefox window tha I'm using right now..., i just can't open anymore of them or connect to any other program...maybe it's something on my laptop because i had the pc going on the router for about an hour and it was fine...I'm gonna switch directly to the ethernet now and disconect the wireless router.

I just completly disconected the wireless router and I'm running on my main router now through the ethernet cable like you suggested. It looks like it's working........any suggestions?

My Pc was working off of the patch cable but the laptop wouldnt. I've managed to connect to other wireless nets with my laptop without any trouble.

So it looks like it's down to a problem with the wireless router. Any chance you could borrow another router to try? Failing that, reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure. I was hoping that it wasn't the router. I wasn't the one who set it up. I actually had a friend of the family who is a technician come in and install it, and it took him a little while( longer than it should have maybe, or maybe I'm imagiing it), he had to screw around with the command prompts etc. I guess I'll try to reset it to factory defaults( Does this involving sticking a paperclip in it somewhere to press a button? I think the technician did that), and I suppose if that fails...I'l buy a new router. When I bought this one I got a discount on it because it was an open box. Maybe it was a return or something.Quote

Probably.

No comment! One of windows default settings can wreak havoc on wireless connections. It wants to automatically log on to a domain server, which will prevent or disable the wireless cards settings. Most home networks do not need, want, nor use a domain server. Try going into the network properties, click on microsoft client for networks, click properties, and disable the "feature". While in network properties, check to see if the cards settings match those of the router (channel, SSID, encryption, etc.). You will probably need to reboot after changing any settings.Alright. Well I went out and bought a new router(but I made sure I could get a refund on it just in case I figured out how to get my old router working.). I futzed with my old wireless router for a whie and eventually my pc was hvig trouble connecting through it too.

The new router seems to be working fine. I ran the inernet for a few hours and I havent been diconnected so it looks like that was the case.

But just in case I disabled the microsoft client thing too.

Thanks for all the help folks, you really pulled me outa' the fire on that one. Npw hopefully no one manages to mess it up on me .(And if something does go wrong apparently this is the place to go ). I hope I havent spoken too soon though, my luck with computers.....

Solve : Midi?

Answer»

I have to know: Is MIDI supposed to sound like a 1980's game, or is it just my sound card?yes
no

What kind of sound card and other specs, what game?Sound Card: Creative Sound Blaster Live! 24-Bit

Other specs... what other specs? I have 5.12.1.512 drivers for this device... I can't think of any other ones related to sound.

The MIDI files I'm referring two are the latest post on the "websites of pedophelic nature" thread. I don't work with MIDI often but when I do, it sounds... bad. Like a real old VIDEO game.To give you some ides of how it sounds, here's a link to a MIDI file. You should recognize it from the thread I pointed out.

http://www.northcastle.co.uk/archive/vault/music/z2-end.mid

Now, it sounds normal (I think, anyway), on the Net. However, on my own PC... well, here's an MP3 version of what I hear (attatched).

EDIT: Hang on, wrong song... done. They sound more alike than different. That definitely sounds like MIDI. Ever heard Lemmings?I'm not sure what Lemmings is, so I'll say "no".

And what confuses me is that they are similar, but not identical. On the net, I can hear a synthesized trumpet in the opening, and it actually sounds dramatic. However, on my PC, it sounds more like an electric piano, which is... not so dramatic. And the duh-DUH-duh-DUH in the middle is totally different. Why? It's on the same PC... does FireFox have its own synth?MIDI RULES! I got the entire Doom 1 and 2 soundtrack. And the Duke Nukem soundtrack, ofcourse.

This one does sound kind of crappy.

It also sounds different on each soundcard you try, if you have Linux, you can load whatever soundfonts you can find and have a huge VARIETY on the same track over and over... Until you get mad because it will never sound like those '90's soundcards.

It's your soundcard's MIDI synthesizer. Or the drivers you use. Not sure, if you figure out, let me know.Dilbert you should be able to change you Midi Syntiziers Setting in Audio in Control panel, try some of the different options , you may find some sound completely different to others.

I find the Yamaha one's seem to do the Best sound, The playstation 1 had a Yamaha SyntThe only two synthesizers I have are

1. Creative SoundFontSynth (Active)

2. Microsoft GS WaveTable SW Synth

I'm at the Yahama Synth site and it appears to be drivers for a soundcard I don't have.

Aww...

[edit]I may not know exactly what the difference between the synth on FF and the synth on my PC is, but I made a practical solution to my problem itself: I used Audacity to record the MIDI on the Net and export it as a WAV and MP3. [/edit]You can upload more soundfonts to that card. RTFM. I didn't get a MANUAL past the poorly translated installation instructions (which, having upgraded PCI cards before, I don't need). :-/Is >this< manual any good? (I haven't downloaded it myself, to check.)I just Re read the Tread , i had that same Sound Chip, only MINE was the Better one

Creative labs Sound Blaster Live Platinum 5.1 ^.^ E-*censored*++
Its a Great Card BTW

But any way, i had Loads Of Midi's The FFVII Sound Track , The Creative Midi Synt Worked Fine for me, the MS one was also Quite Good. But i do BELIEVE i also had the option to use the Yamaha Software Synt at some point, Twas why i recommend it in fact... but now i can not remember where it came from...

Ill have a gawk at the comps at home later and see if i cant find any thingPlatinum, eh? I don't care about that. I have a 7.1, BTW

Solve : Display of proper language in email?

Answer»

Windows XP SP2. Yahoo email account. Due to a recent problem, I had to reinstall windows XP using my backup copy. Did it using the mode that does a backup before reinstalling. Now my email and the QQ IM will not DISPLAY Chinese characters. It does not work either when receiving or sending. They worked before I reinstalled XP. I chose the option of using East Asian LANGUAGE when reinstalling. What do I have to do to get QQ IM and yahoo email to recognize Chinese characters again? I am also running TwinBridge software that allows typing pinyin which it converts to Chinese characters. Any help would be greatly appreciated.I'm not familiar with "the option of using East Asian language when reinstalling" Windows. However, I am familiar with installing an East Asian language in a STANDARD Windows XP system. Here's a reference which briefly explains the procedure: To install East Asian language files on your computerSoybean,

Thanks for the reply. You were correct of course. I set the language using control panel. After your reply, I went back and did it again, but the results are the same. Can't send or receive email in Chinese and can't talk on IM in Chinese. By now I've changed so many settings, I'm not sure where they should be. Time to go back to the defaults and start over. I don't know if the problem is with Windows or the TwinBridge software. I have reinstalled TwinBridge several times with the same result.I have Korean INSTALLED; here's some proof: [ch12615][ch46972][ch12643][ch12599] [ch12601][ch46271][ch46356][ch12643][ch55183][ch12622][ch12599] [ch12624][ch12622][ch12599]. When you went to Control Panel, Regional and Language Options, and proceeded, did you succeed in getting a language toolbar to appear on your taskbar? Here's an image of the my Korean toolbar MOVED to the top of my screen:

I don't understand this: "TwinBridge software that allows typing pinyin which it converts to Chinese characters." Is TwinBridge really necessary? I would think not. Does it have something to do with "pinyin", whatever that is?Pinyin is Chinese written in English characters. I'm not an expert on Chinese, but my wife informs me that there are multiple ways to read and write Chinese. The TwinBridge software allows her to choose and to write Chinese in a sort of shorthand which it converts to regular Chinese characters.

Anyway, when I Chose the language in Control Panel, I did get the language bar. That also was not there the first time I installed this software. I'm starting to think that you are right again. I may not need TwinBridge to write in Chinese, but I need it to do the short cut method, so maybe I do not need to run the Windows version. Maybe I'm mixing apples and oranges this time. I may have to just start from square one and reload everything including windows.

Any further suggestions?Take a look at this. I think it might be quite helpful. It specifically discusses installing Microsoft Pinyin IME 3.0: Installing East Asian Language Support Under Windows XP I have read through the instructions. I think that may be the solution. I will be away for a week and will give it a try when I get back. Thanks for all the info.

Solve : MP3 player problem?

Answer»

Hi all
I have a problem with my MP3 player (as suggested by the title)
To be PRECISE, it's a Rio Carbon 5Gb
Whenever I connect it to a USB port on my computer and try to use Rio Music Manager, the supplied software, to transfer any tracks or look at what's on it, it freezes whilst trying to read it
Task manager shows it as using 100% CPU and the memory usage KEEPS going up, but it doesn't seem to affect anything else, ie my computer does't lock up during this, I just can't use Music Manager to transfer my songs
I could use WINAMP, WMP or Explorer to transfer my music but it's much less convenient
Other than this the MP3 player works as normal
It's about 18 months old and out of warranty
O yeah, I also tried reinstalling Rio Music Manager but it didn't help
Hope someone can helpIs it not possible to jsut copy and paste them on to the Rio? I have a 20gb iRiver and with that all you do is copy and paste the songs on to the player, that what we do for my sisters. Most Hard driver players support drag and drop.

Chris

It's just EASIER - plus I feel that it's faster to transfer using the Rio software than Windows ExplorerHave you tried the link i gave in my first post?

ChrisMissed the link first time I read your post
Have been on it and followed instructions
Reapplying the firmware seems to have fixed it
ThanksNo problems

ChrisIs RIO now defunct?Yea, i thnk they used to be quite popular but since other more well names came along i personally think they have gone downhill. I dont personally dont know anyone who has one.

ChrisRio stopped trading as of about October last year
So no new MP3 players, no firmware updates, software updates etc
However they still maintain their website, despite the total lack of new content
I bought mine from dabs.com about 18 months ago, they were having a sale on refurbished units (£100 reduced from about £150 or so everywhere else) so I got a good deal, especially as the IPOD mini, the nearest competitor, was lower capacity and more expensiveAhh that explains alot, thanks. Also you did a good job not buying an iPod, i wouldnt dare buy one!!! Paying over £100 for somethin thats gonna brake within a few months, something about that just doesnt make me intrested in one.

ChrisI never even considered an iPod, for one they have a bad reputation and they're seen as a fashion accessory more than anything else
Plus I don't like Itunes and I want to be able to use more formats than the ones Apple allow you to useCouldnt agree more buddy!!!

Solve : Improper boot with PXE Error?

Answer»

My system;

Workstation/Server based system with dual pentium III (450MHz each), DVD/CD ROMS, Floppy Drive, Xtacy Video card, 6 port USB2 expansion card, Cisco Aironet PCI 350 internal wireless card, 512MB PC100 sever RAM, SCSI 18.73GB 7200rpm HDD (Win2000), with 1 IDE WD 20GB HDD(Win98 SE) and 1 EIDE 20GB HDD (Blank I believe). The motherboard is a DELL full ATX I believe (don't know for SURE though) but it has a SCSI/IDE bus built into it so it supports both.

This computer (Workstation/Sever) was handed to me by my brother who wanted it fixed.

My question and problem;

I was working fine a few days ago the I started getting this ERROR Message:

PXE-E61: Media Test Failure, check cable

I looked int the Error and found that possible problems were bad HDD, wrong or bad cale, and/or bad or loose connections. I checked the HDD it seems to be fine cause I can feel it spinning (this is the SCSI HDD that it happened to). The cables are not damaged since they're new and all and connections are okay. Now the OS booted occasionally but now wont INITIALIZE windows 2000. The same error was happening with the HDD with Win 98 SE but went ahead and ran Windows 98 SE okay. I started with moving cable unplugging/plugging and making sure everthing was secure the I removed and put the RAM back in several times. Then I removed and put all removable hardware back in its place. Now the computer has a blank black screen and gives me a BEEP with FIVE FOLLOWING BEEPS wich tells me that there could be a motherboard problem, possibly the DMA, the CMOS setup chip, timer and/or the system bus.

I have used up all the known diagnostics to my ablility and still can figure it out. I NEED HELP, PLEASE. I would like to know if it can be fixed (if it can I'll send it in cause I don't trust myself if there is saudering involved), and if not let me know if I have to srcap it and buy new motherboard, CPU, RAM and HDD's.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. :-?How much would it cost to have it repaired when you 'send' it in?

This is what I would try:

  • Reset CMOS
  • Replace all parts apart from the mainboard.

Does Search Engine Robot Visits also show in SERVER LOG?
Yes, unless you filter them out.Hi,

[size=14]There is something I want to pointout here[/size]

One can find a site through SES, also the SE robot will visit the site AUTOMATICALLY after a predetermined interval.

Does for both these type of visits, only the SE robot's visit is shown in server log (i.e. no way to track those who are finding the site through SEs ?)

Question:

In what way to filter out The robot visit? Here is a typical web browser - web server transaction.

Browser: Hey, I want such and such a page. This is my IP address: x.x.x.x
Server: Hello, x.x.x.x, here is your web page.

Here is a typical index spider - web server transaction.

Spider: I'm gonna start with your index page, and ravish you from there. This is my IP address: x.x.x.x
Server: Hello, x.x.x.x, here is your web page.

Sometimes the browser will say, Hey, I want such and such a page. I heard about it from Y. This is my IP address: x.x.x.x

The "I heard about it from Y" bit is the HTTP Referer (sic) header.

There's a really GOOD, intelligible article >here< about HTTP requests. It will definitely help you to understand what's going on betwee a browser/spider and the web server. For a more technical description of the HTTP header system, read >read here<.

As for filtering out spider hits - well that DEPENDS on how those visits are LOGGED and how you view/analyse the logs.

WOOT WOOt my 1000th postThe difference on my settings is that I have the more secure restricted sites marked instead of the internet zone. I think I have CHANGED this back & forth a few times. One WAY or another. The best way is to set email up via IMAP rather than POP3 access.
