Solve : A Question.........?

Answer»

Before I start I just NEED to say I'm not very good with computers, and I'm not sure if this even goes here. I have recently been trying to install DirectX 9.0c and I walked away from my computer and when I came back it told me to "Please type the location where you want to put the extracted files." Then it gives me the option to type in a file or browse for a file. I'm not in the mood to SCREW up my computer so I'm not going to do it until I know for sure that I'm doing the right thing. The system information that I currently know is: I have a Sony Vaio laptop with NVIDIA Ge Force Go 7400 graphics card and I think I think I am running DirectX 9.0b but I am not sure. I really COULD use some help thanks. Please I really need help, if this isn't the right spot or if you need more info just tell me.From a command prompt WINDOWS type in dxdiag. It will identify the DIRECT X version you are using.

You can install Direct X painlessly from the Microsoft Update site if you have a legal version of XP. You have that, right?also, some games come with a directX 9.0c installer. If it still happens, use the location C:\temp
C:\temp is the default for extracted files...
I do have a legal windows xp and this is from microsoft. None of the games I have DirectX 9.0c installer. I'll try the file and I'll tell you if it doesn't work. Thanks.if there is no other way to attain directX 9.0c, Hitman:Blood Money has a directX9.0c installer.Well this is how it turned out: I tried putting the files in C:\temp and it didn't work. So then I tried clicking on the install button again and it just automatically worked. Thanks for helping.

THANKS in advanceUse a pen to open the flap and see whats in there.

Tell us what you see (make SURE the pen does not enter too far, just enough to lift the flap)

It could be that the cover to a floppy disk is stuck in there, it happens every so often.

Solve : USB compatibility?

Answer»

I WOULD like to know if usb A to mini B cables are all the same... I am working with the pickit 2 programmer and I recieved the above usb, but it is not working. If anyone knows if I could just buy ANOTHER cable at a store, would it work?If the cables fit in, then they're the right kind. There's only 3 TYPES of USB connectors and they're all compatible if they fit.Take the unit with you and they should be able to match it up.

I've seen similar errors back when I attempted to learn PHP (and if I ever get time, I will try again). But that was because of some odd MySQL Problem. But I can't get to PCGM's PHP code -- hmm. Maybe I can. I'll certainly try, but I doubt I'll find it. Not that it'll do much good other than to KNOW what's wrong.

Solve : We switched ISP's and now having Exchange issues?

Answer»

Well Rob, I started to follow your last bit of advice and decided to take a look at the configuration of the router in the Kansas City office. Someone questioned me and said "That router is brand new, there shouldn't be anything WRONG with the router." Well duh, I know its new, I bought it (light bulb went on over my head) I took one of our laptops and connected it directly to the internet, bypassing the router, with the router static IP configured in the TCP/IP properties of the laptop. And guess what.... Outlook worked just the way it was supposed to. I was ABLE to sign on instantaneously. So I did a complete reset/reconfiguration of the router and now nobody is having any problems. Easy fix hey? It would have been even nicer if I would have thought about this before going through all of this. Thanks again to everyone that put in their two CENTS worth.I MISSED something before:

Solve : How to make a 65 char per line to totally align in?

Answer»

How to make a 65 char per line to totally align in MSWORD?

that means I want to print, and for that whatever i copy from my email program to MS Word I want to align that totally spread in per line of MS Word (as much space per line can be seen in print view).

How to do that? I mean how to do for the whole docuent (say if it is a 15 page document)WordWrap...under tools i believe...

patio. 8-)Why would you want to do that? And wouldn't line endings at 78 characters be more normal?

There are other ways of doing this; send you message in plain text, then cut and paste the message (which should now have its lines wrapped/truncated) from your sent folder.

Or am I missing the point?Hi

I think, you somehow misunderstood it.

The emails i am copying arein 65 CHARS per line.

When i copy that to word then it remains 65 chars per line.

Now when I print, there is much blank place left and that's why it requires
many papers to print (say if a document is actually 15 page, due to 65 chars per line aignment it goes to take 25 page)

I want to make that 65 chars per line to 78 chars per line in MS word.

Is there any way to do that?Yep, I now understand what you're trying to do.

The characteristic of these emails is that after every 65 characters or so, there's a paragraph mark. (Go to Tools-->Options-->View; display all, and you'll see them.)

Here's a cunning trick, in steps:

 • do a find/replace --> SEARCH for "^p^p" (two paragraph marks one after the other) and replace with "#PARAGRAPH#" (or some other unique code) - these are the REAL paragraphs that we want to retain
 • repeat the first step until no more double paragraphs are found
 • then do a find/replace for single paragraphs --> search for "^p" - leave the replace box blank - these are the spurious paragraphs that we want to remove
 • repeat that step until no more paragraph marks remain in the document (you won't be able to remove the very last one in the document)
 • finally do a search/replace --> search for "#PARAGRAPH#" (or whatever you chose in step 1) and replace with "^p"

Optionally, you can do a select all and choose whatever typeface and font size you'd like. Here's another technique which I believe will accomplish what you want, if I understand you correctly. Copy your email text to Notepad and then cut or copy from Notepad and paste into Word. Word will then arrange the text to conform to whatever margins you have set in Word. That wouldn't remove the extra line breaks, soybean. After a second look, I see you're right. Hi Rob,

What you told here is not CLEAR to me..

Here is a screenshot in MS word which i got after
tools> options>Display all

Now what to do after that?

What do you mean by 2 paragraph marks? By ^p are you indicating the music code at the end of each line? I tried to replace that but nothing is changing.

Can you clarify a little bit?In case Rob doesn't get back to the forum for awhile, I'll comment. By "music code", I presume you mean the paragraph markers at the end of each line in your sample file. And, yes, ^p equals a paragraph marker and can be used in the Find/Replace commands to replace the paragraph marker with something else. Your Replace command panel to remove the paragraph markers at the end of lines except the actual end of the paragraph should look like this:

Does it?YEA that's OK but certain things are not clear to me that ROB said.

What is he meaning by "single" and "double" paragraph.

I have made a procedure but it is not too effective and it can only make changes to 4 or 5 lines.

Here is that:

go to tools>macro>record new macro

Click the "keyboard" button
and then assign a key. say "F4"

Click assign and then the macro would start recording.

you must have the mouse cursoe on the line before starting the macro.

Then press these buttons in sequence:

home, backspace,home ,backspace, home, backspace
(this would do for 3 lines)

Or, If you press
home, backspace, home ,backspace, home, backspace, home, backspace
(this would do for 4 line)

Close the macro.

Now put your muse cursor on any line
and press F4 and it would do for 3 or 4 lines.

But it would take a long time
to do for the whole document(if it is a 25 page document)
that's why i told it not very effective.I believe Rob was explaining that not all paragraph markers are created equal. They look the same but are not equal. In your sample data that you posted as an image, the paragraph marker after the word accordingly is not the same as the others, which he referred to as the "spurious" ones, meaning the ones you don't want. They are the ^p types. The true end of paragraph markers, those after the word accordingly, are represented by ^p^p. Does that make sense?

A simple macro, recorded with the macro recorder, may not work well for this, as you seem to have realized. Just use the Replace All button instead of Replace in Rob's procedure.
Thanks, soybean.

Solve : An HDD Format problem?

Answer»

My 3 gig 1996 hard drive has been partitioned (a LONG time ago) and worked fine until recently.
The first partition still works, its in FAT16 format, the second partition appears in FDISK, but has no format what so ever. I don't really want to delete the partition with no format.

The last time the second partition (the one that has no format now) worked, was before I upgraded DOS to version 6.22 (it was stuck at a VERY makeshift version of 4.01 )and I am supposing this was the cause, but how do I fix it?

Also, after upgrading, I had problems. So I formatted drive C:\ (only the FAT16 drive, not the second partition) so I could do a fresh install, and then I installed DOS 6.22, and drive D:\ was no longer present.

I cant see D:\ in Windows 3.1, or DOS 6.22.

(C:\ is the FAT16 drive partition that was reformatted;
D:\ was the drive that was probably once FAT16, but lost its FAT16 format, this D: is the actual DOS Extended drive)

OS: Windows 3.1 and MS-DOS Version 6.22; 90MHz processor, and SOMEWHERE around 19MB RAM, with 3 GB hard drive... (its a Gateway laptop) it only has a few minor, detected, bad clusters... Scandisk was run recently

(BTW: I believe that this QUALIFIES for more than one category, and that's why its here in the "Others" section... its kind of a mix of Microsoft Windows, DOS, and Hardware... so I put it here)D: needs to be formatted first before you can use it....Quote

D: needs to be formatted first before you can use it....
It was formatted, and I did nothing to unformat it in any way.
D:\ is not detected by DOS or Windows at all, the only thing that seems to notice it is myself (seeing that I am missing 1.5GB ) and the program FDISK.... I was hoping to recover without loss of data, if there is any way, if no one comes up with it here, I will try answers.yahoo, and then I will give up, and delete the partition.

Wait... I don't have FIPS anywhere right now (excluding Linux disk) but will it allow you to give a partition a format? If it can't be seen by Fdisk you'd think it's not assigned a drive letter. You don't need to format it, but you can try assigning it a drive letter with a Windows XP PC and take your data off?Quote

It can be seen by FDISK, and it does not have a drive letter in FDISK...

I cant exactly plug this hard drive into a Windows XP computer... it has a custom connection to the laptop that isn't found in computers.Quote

Do you yourself use Trillain? Also GAIM is quite good, a free/open source alternative instant messenger that supports loads of protocols like Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc
I use it 'cos I got fed up of MSN CRASHING on me all the time
However as panboy said, Trillian is quite good
I used it for a while but I didn't get on with it, I prefer GAIM, but that's just me....Quote
Umm, the connection wizard was the first thing I tried and this problem started about three days ago so Ive logged in and out many times but the problem persists. The IMessaging problem occurs with all of my contacts not just one, but I'll try it. And if I contacted MSN theyd have to reply with an email which I can't recieve. But on the other hand I could get a Gmail account. Are they better??
Gmail is WAYYYYYYY better than msn!!, safer....etc. If you want gmail, just give me your email and I will email you an invitation!BTW: MSN support can accept a different address then the one that isn't working. You can use any email address to have a response sent to.

Oh Ok, I hadn't thought of that. But with Trillian and GAIM, does it have all the same up-to date features like Windows live messenger 8.0 and yahoo! messenger.Instant messaging is the new wide open tube that most malware is being shoved thru these days.

It doesn't warrant me using it if my e-mail notification is less than 3 minutes away.

Solve : Digital camera problem?

Answer»

Not sure if there's a BETTER place to post this, but here goes...
A friend of mine has a Konica Digital Revio KD-310Z camera, which he dropped in some water a while ago
He shut it off and put it near a radiator with batteries etc removed to dry out for a few hours
However, it now refuses to even turn on, it just flashes a LITTLE red light and doesn't do anything else, then makes a loud beeping noise after a few minutes and shuts off
Do you guys think this camera's dead, or is there any hope of reviving it?
Doesn't matter so much if it's dead, he has a really good SLR camera too, but I was kinda hoping he'd give it me if I fixed it...he's given me 2 cameras already, both of which don't work any more, but have not been physically damaged or mistreated

Speaking of which (and I know this post might be getting a bit long now) one of the AFOREMENTIONED cameras is a Goodmans G-Shot 3021Z. The problem is that it will take pictures, movies etc, but will not save them onto an memory card (using a Kingston 128Mb SD card). Any ideas, or should I consign it to the scrap heap?
The other camera is a Trust 820 LCD Powercam Zoom, and everything is out of focus on it when it tried to focus on far-away objects, eg ACROSS the road or when I have the sky in the frame. Closer photos turn out OK. Have tried changing all the settings but to no avail. Any ideas, or should I junk it?
Finally, my dad's camera is a Nikon Coolpix 220 (I think) which displays "system error" on the screen when it is turned on.
Is this a goner too?
Long post, and probably in the wrong place, but any help would be appreciatedThe swimming camera has definitely bitten the dust.

Pretty much the same with the senile camera, the short-sighted camera and the junkie camera.

Sorry.

These disposable items (yes, really thought of as disposable, these days!) are almost never worth the cost of repairing. You might be able to sell them for parts on eBay though. What the *censored* are you doing with your camera's ? :-?Quote

That's pretty much what I thought, just figured it was worth a try asking to see if anyone knew a way to fix them or anything...never mind
Definitely not worth repairing, two places I tried quoted me over £100, for which I can easily get a new, better camera, which I'm going to do
Probably will sell them on ebay, might get something for them...infinitely preferable to nothing
Quote

Remember that the Nikon is my dad's and was about three years old, no physical damage or mistreatment
The Goodmans was dropped by my friend but still worked, then gave up the ghost when he gave it me
The Trust just died for no reason, but was only a budget one anyway, so didn't expect it to last long
So no deliberate camera murdering, just accidents and bad luckI wouldn't bother with Trust products again, no matter how fancy they might look. I wasn't the one who bought the Trust camera, it ws my friend...personally I thought it wouldn't last a few weeks, I was quite surprised when it lasted a whole year and a bit...Quote

Solve : Disabled Services - PLEASE HELP!!!?

Answer»

My computer was taking a full five minutes to reboot every time, in spite of having mega everything. Someone told me I had too many things running and should disable some of them. I went through & THOUGHT I was being extremely careful, checking to see what the services were and what programs were dependent upon them. But after rebooting I cannot get my computer to do anything. It boots up and freezes up almost immediately. I can click on "my computer" and thats as far as I get before it freezes. I cannot even turn it off or restart it, I have to turn off the power strip to shut it down.

Somebody PLEASE HELP!!! I have tax info on there that needs to be submitted by Monday 10/16/06! I cannot believe my computer would allow me to change a function that would essentially "kill" it - GOOD GRIEF!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It sounds like you forgot to provide us with a LOT of detail...

What is your operating system (XP, ME, 2000, 98, 95, NT, 3.x... )
How much RAM does your computer have?
How much Hard Drive Space does your computer have?
What is the processor speed?
Do you have any antivirus protection? Spyware protection? Adware protection?
When did the problem start?
And do you have a floppy drive? Before Windows starts, press F8 and choose 'last KNOWN good configuration'

Scan for viruses, spyware and trojan horses.Sorry, I have Windows XP Home Edition. I'm at work & don't remember my RAM, GIG, HERTZ or any of that off hand except that it was way more than I would ever need. I have AOL which has some spyware program & I often run Adaware. This problem began immediately after I disabled several services and then rebooted. I assumed it was related to something I disabled. What services did you disable and why?

Quote

A Windows service provides functionality to the operating system and user accounts regardless of whether anyone is logged into a system. Windows XP comes with around four dozen services enabled by default, INCLUDING ones that many people consider superfluous like Remote Registry, Alerter, and SSDP DISCOVERY (Universal Plug and Play). A question many Windows administrators commonly have is therefore, which services can I safely disable? What if I told you that for at least basic functionality like Web surfing and application execution, Windows doesn’t need any services? In fact, you can also do those things without system processes like Winlogon.exe, the interactive logon manager, and Lsass, the local security authority subsystem.
http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/07/running-windows-with-no-services.html
That makes me wonder if your problem is elsewhere, perhaps you didn't cause it.
Can you start in safe mode?My computer was taking a very long time to start up & someone told me it was because of too many things running. I don't know exactly what I disabled, but I checked dependencies first and didn't disable anything that sounded like I could possibly need it. In fact, most of the items had no dependencies other than networking, remote access, or Windows Messaging, none of which I use at home. It just never ocurred to me that I could do something fatal, atleast not without a message saying something like "WARNING: If you disable this, you will never be able to use this computer again!" or "Are you sure? This can NEVER be undone".Quote

Services do not heavily affect the boot time of your PC, programs that start when Windows does do.

What guide did you use? It must have carried some warning..

Don't forget to answer Fed's question.I will try starting it in safe mode tonight. I didn't know about that.

Solve : Lime Wire?

Answer»

Kind of an open ended question here how do yall feel about Lime Wire? and do you think it is safe to use? Beats me, I don't use those kind of programs. I've had my fair share of Edonkey and KAZAA (Lite) many years ago. Now I only use BitTorrent.

I like Newsgroups too. Hey there matey,
I personaly use Limewire and i think it is safe, PROVIDED you know what your doing. Songs are fine, movies can be dodgey becuase some people rename the movies so its porn. So if you download a movie i recommend watching it before you start going off showing it to people. The other issue, which is more serious is the subject of Virus's, if you download a program then there are a few simple things you should look out for. For example NEVER download an .EXE file, they are all blatently virus's, also if its a full game you are looking for and there are files that are in the KB or just brinking on the MB then stay away from them, despite the file type. Hope this helps.

Chrisi agree with chriscool. NEVER download an .EXE and always take into consideration the file size. if a rather large game with good graphics is about 700kb's or 1.1mb's, then you have got to be suspicious. also, never download a .MOV file. all they ever do is redirect you to an internet site.Quote

also, never download a .MOV file. all they ever do is redirect you to an internet site.
Oh cool, never new that, ive also noticed that .mov are most often porn.
Oh and please, just call me Chris.

I was thinking the same thing... Homer?

what?

lol, i dont know if EVERY .MOV file does it, but when i tried to download .MOV files, all they ever did was open up my web browser and redirect me to their site. it has been a looooooong time since i last downloaded a .MOV file, maybe that has changed. maybe chris or raptor could test my theory to see if i am correct.....I'm not going to indulge in spyware adventures. This PC couldnt get much worse, give me a day or two

ChrisHello

As everyone above said, you should never download .EXE files or .MOV files
(and you shouldn't download .url files either)

Many pictures and movies you will find may contain graphic porn. Its good to skip through the videos (preview them, if you can) be sure to watch the first part, some of the middle, and the end to make sure that it is only the video you want and nothing more.
Also, when downloading music (preview if you can) make sure that the beginning, some of the middle, and the end are what you want. Many times, people insert extra music or even ads at the end of the song (sometimes because it was recorded from online radio stations)

If you hear sudden very loud (some times high pitched) clicks (tweeks) you should PROBABLY look for a different version of the song, because that can be a sign of code alteration.

remember:
ALL files can contain viruses, (eg. .ZIP, .MOV, .JPG, .TXT, .BMP, .WMA ) no mater what the file type. Although its not common to get viruses in pictures, music, or text files, it is still possible. The best protection you have against these are ANTI virus scanners.

A good FREE ANTIVIRUS scanner is Avast ( www.avast.com )

Solve : RSS feeds?

Answer»

Any interesting RSS news feeds out there?

So far I've got 3 news channels, one of them being the BBC. The other being two national news agencies. What exactly is an RSS feed? Is it a scrolling bar across the browser with the latest data about whatever you're RRSing?

Alan <>< A lot of websites use them so that you can browse through their (Daily) articles without actually having to visit the website.

Internet Explorer is not RSS capable (What else is new? ), so if you're not a firefox user you might not know it at all.

Ouch RSS guide

Quote

What is RSS?

RSS is a method by which you can keep up to date with all your favourite websites, blogs and news sources easily. Rather than go to every site you like to see whether it has been updated, wouldn't it be cool to have the new headlines sent to you as soon as new entries or stories appear? Well, RSS can help you with this - and it certainly saves a lot of clicking around.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It's rather clever, and it KEEPS you up to date with minimum hassle. When you see the phrase 'RSS feed', think of it as 'headlines that come to me'.

Not all websites provide RSS feeds, but it is growing in popularity. Other sites with RSS include our own BBC News site, The Guardian, most weblogs, Wired and MANY others.

Sometimes you might see RSS feeds referred to as 'news feeds', 'feed', 'XML' or 'Atom' ... but they all do the same thing.

Quote
Internet Explorer is not RSS capable (What else is new? ), so if you're not a firefox user you might not know it at all.
Absolutely not true. IE definitely will display pages with RSS content. I created a page with nothing but a web feed to illustrate the point: http://home.earthlink.net/~dderolph/ELCAwebfeed.htm. I'm viewing it in IE right now.

It came from here: http://www.elca.org/webfeeds/default.aspQuote

That is NOT RSS feed. An RSS feed (or an XML feed) ends with an extension
rss or xml. The main feature of a RSS or XML feed is to deliver updated contents (articles, blog posts, news posts etc) automatically. And when you are going to view it with browsers, the updated page will automatically enter
in your feed.

Your page(click here) does not contain any RSS or XML button. So where from you get this page(click here)? And this page ends with an extension .htm .

Just go to thefollowing page
http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/index.php?page=newsfeed

and in your internet explorer when you click on the xml button (see the actual location for this button ends with .xml and not htm) will you get code like this?

Code: [Select]
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="ISO-8859-1" ?>

</item>

Well, its not actually the RSS feed, its only the code for the feed.

Now you go to opera browser (or firefox, PROVIDED the right extension for showing feed re installed in firefox), and click on the same XML button, you will get the message:

"Do you want to subscribe to such and such feed??"

When you click "yes", the feed is downloaded.

When i click on the xml button for the following feed (in opera browser)

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.xml

many things (i call these as FEED ENTRIES) were downloaded:

say

1) Prescription Drug Prices Vary By Neighborhood In New York City, According To A City Council Report

2) New Wound Dressing May Lead To Maggot Therapy Without The Maggots

3) Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Strains Worry Europeans

and more...

Each of the above are titles of the corresponding feed entry.

An XML feed entry consists of 3 parts

TITLE (THE TITLE THAT SHOWS)
DESCRIPTION (THE SHORT SUMMARY)
LINK (THE URL FOR THE PAGE)

So based on the title of the feed entry, you decide whether you want to read
it or not. then you read its description ( and it is a short summary of the entire posts). If the description attracts you then you click the corresponding URL.

When any new post is inserted in that feed (by the feed owner), he adjusts his feed code accrordingly so that new post automatically enters your feed, in your browser, as new feed entry.

Do you have any process implemented in this page to automatically insert latest post (or html pages). It can't, because this page ENDS WITH the extension .htm.

A standard feed code looks like this:

If you are using Internet Explorer, you will need a feed reader. My choice is Google reader, because it can read both RSS and Atom feeds.

To use Google reader, you need a google account, which you can get from here.

shouvik, thanks for that lengthy explanation. I believe I now know that the feed I mentioned is actually a javascript feed. As you said, it is not an RSS news feed. The new IE 7 is RSS capable.

Solve : university connection and downloading- help?

Answer»

Hello,

My university has blocked students who are using their network from downloading songs or getting a connection to software were you can download songs from. I understand that some people may not WANT to help me try and find a way to enable me to download songs as it is illegal. However, is there any way I can do something with the network settings to enable me to get access to limewire or nething like that? I was talkin to a member of staff at the uni and he told me that although it is illegal i should ask a computer person as they may no how to get you access to it.
Please help
Emmasorry we dont do illegal stuff here.. What is the consequences if you are caught violating their RULES? Is it worth it?

What are you studying at your university? Ethics? The university I'm currently studying at has strong firewall rules on the network.

If we get caught doing anything we shouldn't (p2p, porn, music / movie downloading, file sharing, running a server, ETC...) then our connection is cut and we have to do the walk of shame to the IT department.

I have never had to go through the process (though I know somebody that has) but to get cut off with a deadline looming... not good!My son has a similar rule at his school. He elected to follow the rules of their network usage as a matter of principle. I don't think you ever get bad results with that approach.lol... i BROKE the rules at my old high school then my senior yr they asked me to take a class where i help the tech group out and i gave them my note book with all of the loop HOLES of the network.... lol so it can be a good thing just depends on the school.Use a HTTP tunneler.

Fight the power!depends on if they have those blocked.. after a while my high scholl finally blocked all of the ones i knew.

Presuming you have a modern IDE or SATA type drive. Do NOT do a low-level format.
It will kill your hard drive.

I seem to remember that you could do a low level format on an old MFM drive but we are talking pre- 286cpu technology there? Or about then anyway, (yes I am THAT old).

What most of these killdisk/ZAP/fidisk's do it either re-write a new master boot record/sector and or delete all partitions.
Some fill the disk will X's or 0's after they do this process which really kills the data.
Anyhow I am rambling so I will stop..

CCleaner - i have found it very reliable and quick but everyone has thier favourite software.
CCleaner is all I ever use now

Raptor, just how does a manual registry cleaner work? Is what way is it manual?

In that it doesn't scan for a list of errors but just gives you certain things that you can fix. Try RegCleaner and see for yourself, it only lists entries for installed programs and allows you to edit file extensions without really having to scan.

Ok, it's not really a manual editor but it's not as automated and as CrapCleaner for example.Quote

Actually, they're not very safe. The quick-format will not EVEN wipe reformat the HDD and the other format option probably isn't DoD compliant.

Well, I'm not sure if KillDisk is either, though, but it's pretty decent. It can also immediatly tell you if there are any dead bad sectors on the HDD.

never used killdisk but I'm sure it's OK if people suggest it.
Fidsk or windows XP partition tool, (on boot up from xp CD) are both very safe and will wipe the disk enough for a re-install of windows.

Ahhhh maybe I didn't make myself clear, what I mean by very safe is that unlike a low-level format you can not physically damage your HDD with fdisk or xp boot disk. Sorry for not making myself clear.

If you are after a "Safe" method of erasing a drive you need at least 7 overight passes to be DOD compliant.
A quick format is in no way DOD compliant. All a quick format does is marks the disk as available for a write procedure it leaves the actual data intact. Even a full format is pretty simple to recover as long as data has not been writen to the drive afterwards.
For the highest level of secure erase it's a matter of debate some poel say 32 passes some say 35?

The bad sector warning sound usefull though.

Second question is there any use in running a registry cleaner other than CCleaner?
CCleaner is quite safe to use but it's not quite as thorough a registry cleaner as programs designed primarily as registry cleaners, as opposed to also doing a lot of disk cleanup like CCleaner. Therefore, you might want to use the RegCleaner that Raptor mentioned or another registry cleaner, in addition to CCleaner. I use CCleaner and I think it's a GREAT maintenance tool. However, I do occasionally use another registry cleaner Eusing Free Registry Cleaner.

You should be able to upload most .mp3 .wma and other music types to a webserver and when a user opens it, it should open in their web browser.

You would have to use plugins to get it on your site by IMPLEMENTING objects or something like that....

Solve : Sending E-mails from different addresses?

Answer»

I remember reading somewhere in a computer magazine that it's possible to send an e-mail from any email address. EXAMPLE, say my email were [emailprotected], the article said that this certain service or site allowed me to send it from like '[emailprotected]'. I've since lost the article.

Anyone KNOW how to do this? Its called Spoofing and is affilieated with SPAM in some cases.

You can do this in Outlook Express legally IF you own the site you are sending it from.

Also, people will not be able to send to the address that they see.
If they try, they will get a post master delivery status faliure error, and it will cause problems.

Anyone know how to do this?
Yes.

The Outlook method will NOT cause genuine spoofing.

No, I'll not be providing a tutorial.

Edit: I missed the "not" out before. D'oh!Why not? Email spoofing causes WAY to many problems.

Plus: its clasified as SPAM, and if the Mail providor detects different address then listed, the message will

Solve : POS Advertising.?

Answer»

POS Advertising.

I HOPPING someone might have a solution to a problem I have.

We are a retail store. We want to put up some LCD’s and TV’s up around the store to run power point ADS on them.

What I would like to do is run power point on one pc and have it show on 2 LCD SCREENS and 2 TV’s. All 4 of these units are up to 150ft from each other. How should I go about making this work? If you think where would be a better way I would love to hear them?

Thanks
There's a VGA splitter device available which can split up to 8 monitors. I'll let you know the name of the device tomorrow. We use one too for PPP.KVM switch? We use a 8 switch one in our server room but all the pc's are all right there not 150ft way. Think there is one that works over IP?No, not a KVM switch. It was a VGA splitter of some kind. It allowed all monitors to be on at the same time.

Have patience and I'll let you know tomorrow after work. When you got me thinking on the KVM switch I WENT down the right road. They are called ewms1000 media streamer connections. Made by avocent. I can hook them up to any kind of vga or TV unit and STREAM video from a PC or DVD up to 1000ft away. (Line of sight.)

Thanks for the info. The one we have at work is a Videoview 8 VGA port switch costing 80 pounds..

1) Does good quality monitor (i.e. monitor from a reputed company which is highly priced) consume less electricity than a monitor from a not-so-reputed company?

Depends entirely on the parts used.

LCD monitors generally use less power than a CRT monitor and if they adhere to certain standards (Such as "Energystar) they will be bound to use even less energy. I'm not too well educated on the standards, though.

Solve : HP printer Q?

Hello - my first time here. I had to take my HP 1350 printer away from the computer and when I decided to set it up again it indicates that I need a startup cd for the WIZARD to run. I cannot find one anywhere here - is there a site where I can get such ? Thanks, steve in so azI suggest you GO to HP 1350 printer, select the exact product you have, and download the Software & driver for it. Thanks for helping me out. I went there and it looks like I have to buy the cd - is this normal ? Seems like they would download one to me free. I am not real knowledgeable about computers so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, steveYou can download the basic driver free, but the bundled software has to be ordered and paid for from HP. What are they wanting to charge for it? That is standard for elaborate printers and many scanners.Hold the phone ! Think I have it. It's downloading now - will take 2 hours Thanks, steveOn SECOND THOUGHT it's up to almost 3 hours now so think I'll try to call them instead and see if they can send a cd. thanks, steveQuote

Well, since he owns the printer and probably had the bundled software when originally purchased it, I believe he may be permitted to download the software, also. Right? Indeed, it appears he can download it.
Have a look:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&product=306888&dlc=en&os=228

Some of the models do NOT have free downloads for the additional software period. Been there, seen that. OK, I'll accept that Some of the models do NOT have free downloads. But, the link you posted, which relates to his model printer, has a link to this page, HP Photosmart Essential software for photo editing, printing, and sharing, which appears to have no restriction. It appears to be available to anyone. I started the download, but interrupted it. Drivers are always free? :-?Right. But, at least sometimes, software, in addition to the driver, is free, such as HP Photosmart Essential software for photo editing, printing, and sharing. This appears to be more than a printer driver; it appears to be photo editing software. That is true on this printer at this time, SB. I have the identical printer and when looking for updated drivers a few MONTHS back, the big download with the imaging software was NOT available for download at all.

That's why I said "been there..."Quote

Solve : how do I create a CD/DVD to read on any drive??

Answer»

I have created several web pages using MS Publisher and loaded them on CD (&AMP; DVD) together with Legacy Family Tree and "linked" them with hyperlinks which are prefaced "D:\"; which works okay on my disc drive (and my son's which also is a "D" drive), but of course the hyperlinks don't work on computers which use say "G:\" drives for their comact discs. Can anyone suggest how I can format the files so that the hyperlinks to the files work on any drive? You COULD try making the links again but with a relative PATH, IE instead of "D:\" use "\". This works on my flash drive, I use an autorun file with relative paths to open my portable applications when I plug it in. Obviously the drive letter changes from computer to computer, so relative paths are the only way. Thanks Calum, I have tried that and it works!! Thanks so much, that was of GREAT assistance. Someone told me that there is a way to do it remotely and store it there after you're finished. Does anyone know what that site is called and if it's safe?

Then if i do need to buy one of the programs which one is easiest to use? If i am not MISTAKING, one of the external hard drives that i purchased came with one but i could never figure it out. If i remember the name of it i'll post it later.

No. It doesn't mean copying the unused space. Did you actually look at, or try, the arithmetic calculation I posted? I guess not, or maybe you didn't understand it, so I'll explain it here.

You wrote

Quote
If i "back up" using DVD's about how many do i need for a 250 gig HD that is only is only 18% used?

The HD is 250 GB in size. 18% is the same as 0.18. So the amount of data to back up is (250 * 0.18) GB, or if you find it easier to understand, "Two hundred and fifty gigabytes times zero point one eight".

The answer is 45 GB.

You wanted to know how many DVDs that would fit on, so we divide that by 4.7 (The number of GB on a single layer DVD). The answer is 9.57. That means 9 whole disks and a bit more than half of a tenth disk. So you'd need 10 disks.

I thought the arithmetic was pretty simple and OBVIOUS, I'm sorry if I made a mistake thinking that.

If backing up meant copying the unused space, the number of disks woulb be 250 / 4.7 which comes out to around 54 disks. And that 0.18 would not be in the calculation I posted.

You said: "I thought the arithmetic was pretty simple and obvious, I'm sorry if I made a mistake thinking that."

Thank you for your taking the time and making the effort to clarify the numbers and methods needed to" do the math " or "arithmetic" as you called it in your LAST reply.

The calculations required are the same as in these problems:

1. A 250 litre tank is 18% full. How many times will I need to put in a 4.7 litre bucket to empty it?

2. A 250 gram flour jar is 18% full. How many times will I need to put in a spoon holding 4.7 grams to empty it?

3. A container holds 250 squoggles of some substance when full. It is 18% full. How many 4.7 squoggle bottles will I need to use to hold its contents?

I have not used this but have read good things about it: http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html#free. NOTE that I think it will only image to a larger disk; in your case, i guess larger than 250 GB.

Acronis: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/, is an excellent paid program. Amazon price $34.00.

Thanks for that, I might just use the VGA INSTEAD of getting a graphics card.

Solve : samsung syncmaster 950b?

Answer»

i have this samsung syncmaster 950b and it's locked. how do i unlock it ? i have xp home p4 2.0 ghz 512ram 80 gbWhat do you mean its locked?
The Samsung Syncmaster is a MONITOR type... how did you lock your monitor?

Or did you lock your COMPUTER?
If you locked your computer, and not the monitor, then I would recommend typing in the password... if you bought it from someone, ask them what the password is. If its not yours, well, that's a separate problem, and you probably shouldn't have it. when i click on MENU, it says locked and i picked it up at a REUSED center, so ur telling me there is nothing i can do ?Ah, I understand now. Your On Screen Display (OSD) is locked.

Hold down the Degauss button for 30 SECONDS.

Solve : Keyboard doesn't work.?

Answer»

When I turn on my computer my keyboard shows up as being functional, but once my computer has completely started up, the keyboard shuts off, and won't do a thing. When I un-plug the keyboard and re-plug it back in, it will just make a single beep noise and continue to not function whatsoever. I've tried the FN+F10, downloading softpoint...Help is greatly appreciated. Is your keyboard PS/2? If so, you must turn off your computer before unplugging it. What's Fn+F10 do?FN+F10 MAKES it so when you press keys such as "M" it will come out as a "0" instead.
It connects with a USB port. That's why I'm oh-so confused.

What had you DONE before problem occurred? I assume this is not a new keyboard?I've had it for about a year or so. The very last thing I did before I turned off my computer last night was played some sort of MMORPG. But when I turned on my computer this morning, the keyboard was as it is now. Did you change any settings for the MMORPG? BTW, I'm just collecting information. I most likely will not be able to help you, as I am a noob. I'm just TRYING to help pave the way for the experts until they get here.Haha, it's fine.
When I downloaded the MMORPG, I had to also download one of the previous patches so it would work. I don't know if that would have messed with my keyboard though. I don't know, what MMORPG is it? Is it reliable? It's Maple Story.
Quite embarrassed to say so, though. That game is quite CHILDISH through my eyes. Hey, play what you like. Don't think about what other people think. Be yourself.

So, it probably didn't do it, but then, I don't know much about it. Like I said, I doubt the extent of my knowledge can help you any longer.Well, thank you anyway.
I was able to check off some things on my LIST! Have you tried another keyboard?
