Solve : A Question.........? |
|
Answer» Before I start I just NEED to say I'm not very good with computers, and I'm not sure if this even goes here. I have recently been trying to install DirectX 9.0c and I walked away from my computer and when I came back it told me to "Please type the location where you want to put the extracted files." Then it gives me the option to type in a file or browse for a file. I'm not in the mood to SCREW up my computer so I'm not going to do it until I know for sure that I'm doing the right thing. The system information that I currently know is: I have a Sony Vaio laptop with NVIDIA Ge Force Go 7400 graphics card and I think I think I am running DirectX 9.0b but I am not sure. I really COULD use some help thanks. Please I really need help, if this isn't the right spot or if you need more info just tell me.From a command prompt WINDOWS type in dxdiag. It will identify the DIRECT X version you are using. |

Solve : USB compatibility? |
|
Answer» I WOULD like to know if usb A to mini B cables are all the same... I am working with the pickit 2 programmer and I recieved the above usb, but it is not working. If anyone knows if I could just buy ANOTHER cable at a store, would it work?If the cables fit in, then they're the right kind. There's only 3 TYPES of USB connectors and they're all compatible if they fit.Take the unit with you and they should be able to match it up. |

Solve : pcgamemods.com? |

Answer» I'm trying to access www.pcgamemods.com so I can get a few mods. Tracert and ping works perfectly: C:\>tracert pcgamemods.com However, when I try to access the site, I get this: Quote Fatal error: Uncaught exception 'DBException' with message 'Database: Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction' in /home/web/pcgm3/library/db.php:29 Stack trace: #0 /home/web/pcgm3/scripts/log.php(7): db->query('INSERT INTO pag...') #1 /home/web/pcgm3/index.php(11): require_once('/home/web/pcgm3...') #2 {main} thrown in /home/web/pcgm3/library/db.php on line 29 Can you guys access this site? If so, what can I do to fix this?I get the same result Dilbert, try again tomorrow.OK... "Yes, PCGM is down... please wait and oxygen masks will drop down from the ceiling..."It looks like an error generated by their php code.I guessed that much myself. I've seen similar errors back when I attempted to learn PHP (and if I ever get time, I will try again). But that was because of some odd MySQL Problem. But I can't get to PCGM's PHP code -- hmm. Maybe I can. I'll certainly try, but I doubt I'll find it. Not that it'll do much good other than to KNOW what's wrong. EDIT: Why, oh why did I forget this? Quote Registrant: Message is away. Quote It looks like an error generated by their php code.(I was going to say that...) A simple code in PHP can make the same results as a train running into a bulder, it stops everything. Hopefuly, it will be back up again.Heh. I've used ewido anti-malware 3.5 a few times, and it seemed like a tool worth having. Here's the actual PC Magazine review: ewido anti-spyware 4.0. Solve : We switched ISP's and now having Exchange issues? |
|
Answer» Well Rob, I started to follow your last bit of advice and decided to take a look at the configuration of the router in the Kansas City office. Someone questioned me and said "That router is brand new, there shouldn't be anything WRONG with the router." Well duh, I know its new, I bought it (light bulb went on over my head) I took one of our laptops and connected it directly to the internet, bypassing the router, with the router static IP configured in the TCP/IP properties of the laptop. And guess what.... Outlook worked just the way it was supposed to. I was ABLE to sign on instantaneously. So I did a complete reset/reconfiguration of the router and now nobody is having any problems. Easy fix hey? It would have been even nicer if I would have thought about this before going through all of this. Thanks again to everyone that put in their two CENTS worth.I MISSED something before: They do not have a FIREWALL ... at their office.I missed smacking myself on the head loudly. Take your IT guy outside now and shoot him. It would be a kindness. If the IT guy is you well sorry, those are the breaks.I'm not the IT person for that location Rob and yes I've already made a head shaped dent in one of the walls at that office over the firewall issue. You know that saying about leading a horse to water....Seriously, he should be fired on the spot. From a cannon. Solve : How to make a 65 char per line to totally align in? |
|
Answer» How to make a 65 char per line to totally align in MSWORD?
Optionally, you can do a select all and choose whatever typeface and font size you'd like. Here's another technique which I believe will accomplish what you want, if I understand you correctly. Copy your email text to Notepad and then cut or copy from Notepad and paste into Word. Word will then arrange the text to conform to whatever margins you have set in Word. That wouldn't remove the extra line breaks, soybean. After a second look, I see you're right. Hi Rob, What you told here is not CLEAR to me.. Here is a screenshot in MS word which i got after tools> options>Display all Now what to do after that? What do you mean by 2 paragraph marks? By ^p are you indicating the music code at the end of each line? I tried to replace that but nothing is changing. Can you clarify a little bit?In case Rob doesn't get back to the forum for awhile, I'll comment. By "music code", I presume you mean the paragraph markers at the end of each line in your sample file. And, yes, ^p equals a paragraph marker and can be used in the Find/Replace commands to replace the paragraph marker with something else. Your Replace command panel to remove the paragraph markers at the end of lines except the actual end of the paragraph should look like this: Does it?YEA that's OK but certain things are not clear to me that ROB said. What is he meaning by "single" and "double" paragraph. I have made a procedure but it is not too effective and it can only make changes to 4 or 5 lines. Here is that: go to tools>macro>record new macro Click the "keyboard" button and then assign a key. say "F4" Click assign and then the macro would start recording. you must have the mouse cursoe on the line before starting the macro. Then press these buttons in sequence: home, backspace, home ,backspace, home, backspace (this would do for 3 lines) Or, If you press home, backspace, home ,backspace, home, backspace, home, backspace (this would do for 4 line) Close the macro. Now put your muse cursor on any line and press F4 and it would do for 3 or 4 lines. But it would take a long time to do for the whole document(if it is a 25 page document) that's why i told it not very effective.I believe Rob was explaining that not all paragraph markers are created equal. They look the same but are not equal. In your sample data that you posted as an image, the paragraph marker after the word accordingly is not the same as the others, which he referred to as the "spurious" ones, meaning the ones you don't want. They are the ^p types. The true end of paragraph markers, those after the word accordingly, are represented by ^p^p. Does that make sense? A simple macro, recorded with the macro recorder, may not work well for this, as you seem to have realized. Just use the Replace All button instead of Replace in Rob's procedure. Thanks, soybean. |

Solve : An HDD Format problem? |
|
Answer» My 3 gig 1996 hard drive has been partitioned (a LONG time ago) and worked fine until recently. D: needs to be formatted first before you can use it....It was formatted, and I did nothing to unformat it in any way. D:\ is not detected by DOS or Windows at all, the only thing that seems to notice it is myself (seeing that I am missing 1.5GB ) and the program FDISK.... I was hoping to recover without loss of data, if there is any way, if no one comes up with it here, I will try answers.yahoo, and then I will give up, and delete the partition. Wait... I don't have FIPS anywhere right now (excluding Linux disk) but will it allow you to give a partition a format? If it can't be seen by Fdisk you'd think it's not assigned a drive letter. Answer» Hi EVERYONE, Hi everyone, Use Gmail!Or use Gmail, yeah. Umm, the connection wizard was the first thing I tried and this problem started about three days ago so Ive logged in and out many times but the problem persists. The IMessaging problem occurs with all of my contacts not just one, but I'll try it. And if I contacted MSN theyd have to reply with an email which I can't recieve. But on the other hand I could get a Gmail account. Are they better??Uninstall MSN , and reinstall the Newest Version, it Call Live messenger now BTW, you might also try Trillain, its an all in One IM , that Supports MSN Yahoo ICQ Aol..Ok cool, thanks panboy Ill try all that. Do you yourself use Trillain? Also GAIM is quite good, a free/open source alternative instant messenger that supports loads of protocols like Yahoo, MSN, AOL, etc I use it 'cos I got fed up of MSN CRASHING on me all the time However as panboy said, Trillian is quite good I used it for a while but I didn't get on with it, I prefer GAIM, but that's just me....Quote Umm, the connection wizard was the first thing I tried and this problem started about three days ago so Ive logged in and out many times but the problem persists. You can use any email address to have a response sent to. Oh Ok, I hadn't thought of that. But with Trillian and GAIM, does it have all the same up-to date features like Windows live messenger 8.0 and yahoo! messenger.Instant messaging is the new wide open tube that most malware is being shoved thru these days. It doesn't warrant me using it if my e-mail notification is less than 3 minutes away. I'll Pass |

Solve : Digital camera problem? |

Answer» Not sure if there's a BETTER place to post this, but here goes... The swimming camera has definitely bitten the dust. That's pretty much what I thought, just figured it was worth a try asking to see if anyone knew a way to fix them or anything...never mind Definitely not worth repairing, two places I tried quoted me over £100, for which I can easily get a new, better camera, which I'm going to do Probably will sell them on ebay, might get something for them...infinitely preferable to nothing Quote What the *censored* are you doing with your camera's ?Remember that the Nikon is my dad's and was about three years old, no physical damage or mistreatment The Goodmans was dropped by my friend but still worked, then gave up the ghost when he gave it me The Trust just died for no reason, but was only a budget one anyway, so didn't expect it to last long So no deliberate camera murdering, just accidents and bad luckI wouldn't bother with Trust products again, no matter how fancy they might look. I wasn't the one who bought the Trust camera, it ws my friend...personally I thought it wouldn't last a few weeks, I was quite surprised when it lasted a whole year and a bit...Quote I wasn't the one who bought the Trust camera, it ws my friend...personally I thought it wouldn't last a few weeks, I was quite surprised when it lasted a whole year and a bit... Solve : Disabled Services - PLEASE HELP!!!? |
|
Answer» My computer was taking a full five minutes to reboot every time, in spite of having mega everything. Someone told me I had too many things running and should disable some of them. I went through & THOUGHT I was being extremely careful, checking to see what the services were and what programs were dependent upon them. But after rebooting I cannot get my computer to do anything. It boots up and freezes up almost immediately. I can click on "my computer" and thats as far as I get before it freezes. I cannot even turn it off or restart it, I have to turn off the power strip to shut it down. A Windows service provides functionality to the operating system and user accounts regardless of whether anyone is logged into a system. Windows XP comes with around four dozen services enabled by default, INCLUDING ones that many people consider superfluous like Remote Registry, Alerter, and SSDP DISCOVERY (Universal Plug and Play). A question many Windows administrators commonly have is therefore, which services can I safely disable? What if I told you that for at least basic functionality like Web surfing and application execution, Windows doesn’t need any services? In fact, you can also do those things without system processes like Winlogon.exe, the interactive logon manager, and Lsass, the local security authority subsystem.http://www.sysinternals.com/blog/2005/07/running-windows-with-no-services.html That makes me wonder if your problem is elsewhere, perhaps you didn't cause it. Can you start in safe mode?My computer was taking a very long time to start up & someone told me it was because of too many things running. I don't know exactly what I disabled, but I checked dependencies first and didn't disable anything that sounded like I could possibly need it. In fact, most of the items had no dependencies other than networking, remote access, or Windows Messaging, none of which I use at home. It just never ocurred to me that I could do something fatal, atleast not without a message saying something like "WARNING: If you disable this, you will never be able to use this computer again!" or "Are you sure? This can NEVER be undone".Quote My computer was taking a very long time to start up & someone told me it was because of too many things running. Don't forget to answer Fed's question.I will try starting it in safe mode tonight. I didn't know about that. ThanksDid you have antivirus? |

Solve : Lime Wire? |
|
Answer» Kind of an open ended question here how do yall feel about Lime Wire? and do you think it is safe to use? Beats me, I don't use those kind of programs. I've had my fair share of Edonkey and KAZAA (Lite) many years ago. Now I only use BitTorrent. also, never download a .MOV file. all they ever do is redirect you to an internet site.Oh cool, never new that, ive also noticed that .mov are most often porn. Oh and please, just call me Chris. ChrisQuote Quotealso, never download a .MOV file. all they ever do is redirect you to an internet site.Oh cool, never new that, ive also noticed that .mov are most often porn. I was thinking the same thing... Homer? what? lol, i dont know if EVERY .MOV file does it, but when i tried to download .MOV files, all they ever did was open up my web browser and redirect me to their site. it has been a looooooong time since i last downloaded a .MOV file, maybe that has changed. maybe chris or raptor could test my theory to see if i am correct.....I'm not going to indulge in spyware adventures. This PC couldnt get much worse, give me a day or two ChrisHello As everyone above said, you should never download .EXE files or .MOV files (and you shouldn't download .url files either) Many pictures and movies you will find may contain graphic porn. Its good to skip through the videos (preview them, if you can) be sure to watch the first part, some of the middle, and the end to make sure that it is only the video you want and nothing more. Also, when downloading music (preview if you can) make sure that the beginning, some of the middle, and the end are what you want. Many times, people insert extra music or even ads at the end of the song (sometimes because it was recorded from online radio stations) If you hear sudden very loud (some times high pitched) clicks (tweeks) you should PROBABLY look for a different version of the song, because that can be a sign of code alteration. remember: ALL files can contain viruses, (eg. .ZIP, .MOV, .JPG, .TXT, .BMP, .WMA ) no mater what the file type. Although its not common to get viruses in pictures, music, or text files, it is still possible. The best protection you have against these are ANTI virus scanners. A good FREE ANTIVIRUS scanner is Avast ( www.avast.com ) |

Solve : RSS feeds? |
|
Answer» Any interesting RSS news feeds out there? What is RSS? Quote Internet Explorer is not RSS capable (What else is new? ), so if you're not a firefox user you might not know it at all.Absolutely not true. IE definitely will display pages with RSS content. I created a page with nothing but a web feed to illustrate the point: http://home.earthlink.net/~dderolph/ELCAwebfeed.htm. I'm viewing it in IE right now. It came from here: http://www.elca.org/webfeeds/default.aspQuote Absolutely not true. IE definitely will display pages with RSS content. I created a page with nothing but a web feed to illustrate the point: http://home.earthlink.net/~dderolph/ELCAwebfeed.htm. I'm viewing it in IE right now. That is NOT RSS feed. An RSS feed (or an XML feed) ends with an extension rss or xml. The main feature of a RSS or XML feed is to deliver updated contents (articles, blog posts, news posts etc) automatically. And when you are going to view it with browsers, the updated page will automatically enter in your feed. Your page(click here) does not contain any RSS or XML button. So where from you get this page(click here)? And this page ends with an extension .htm . Just go to thefollowing page http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/index.php?page=newsfeed and in your internet explorer when you click on the xml button (see the actual location for this button ends with .xml and not htm) will you get code like this? Code: [Select] -
-

Latest Health News and Medical News posted throughout the day, every day.

Health News from Medical News Today

-

Australian Neuroscientists Forge Closer Ties With Their Colleagues In China

QUEENSLAND Brain Institute (QBI) neuroscientists from The University of Queensland will visit Shanghai this week to formalise a growing relationship between QBI and the Chinese Academy of Science,Institute of Neuroscience (ION). Now you go to opera browser (or firefox, PROVIDED the right extension for showing feed re installed in firefox), and click on the same XML button, you will get the message: "Do you want to subscribe to such and such feed??" When you click "yes", the feed is downloaded. When i click on the xml button for the following feed (in opera browser) http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/medicalnews.xml many things (i call these as FEED ENTRIES) were downloaded: say 1) Prescription Drug Prices Vary By Neighborhood In New York City, According To A City Council Report 2) New Wound Dressing May Lead To Maggot Therapy Without The Maggots 3) Drug Resistant Tuberculosis Strains Worry Europeans and more... Each of the above are titles of the corresponding feed entry. An XML feed entry consists of 3 parts TITLE (THE TITLE THAT SHOWS) DESCRIPTION (THE SHORT SUMMARY) LINK (THE URL FOR THE PAGE) So based on the title of the feed entry, you decide whether you want to read it or not. then you read its description ( and it is a short summary of the entire posts). If the description attracts you then you click the corresponding URL. When any new post is inserted in that feed (by the feed owner), he adjusts his feed code accrordingly so that new post automatically enters your feed, in your browser, as new feed entry. Do you have any process implemented in this page to automatically insert latest post (or html pages). It can't, because this page ENDS WITH the extension .htm. A standard feed code looks like this:

Australian Neuroscientists Forge Closer Ties With Their Colleagues In China

Queensland Brain Institute (QBI) neuroscientists from The University of Queensland will visit Shanghai this week to formalise a growing relationship between QBI and the Chinese Academy of Science,Institute of Neuroscience (ION). To use Google reader, you need a google account, which you can get from here. shouvik, thanks for that lengthy explanation. I believe I now know that the feed I mentioned is actually a javascript feed. As you said, it is not an RSS news feed. Solve : Low level formats? |
|
Answer» OK Here is what I have. Here's the question if I wanted to do a low level format how would I do that? You'll need a program like KILLDISK or the HDD's manufacturer their diagnostic/low-level format software Quote Second question is there any use in running a registry cleaner other than CCleaner? There are different Registry cleaners, some are automated, some are a bit weak and others are manual. I use Regcleaner(Click) which is a manual registry cleaner.Quote QuoteHere's the question if I wanted to do a low level format how would I do that? Thank you Raptor that is Just what I was looking for got KillDisk Run the KilldiskRaptor, just how does a manual registry cleaner work? Is what way is it manual?Quote Here's the question if I wanted to do a low level format how would I do that? Presuming you have a modern IDE or SATA type drive. Do NOT do a low-level format. It will kill your hard drive. I seem to remember that you could do a low level format on an old MFM drive but we are talking pre- 286cpu technology there? Or about then anyway, (yes I am THAT old). What most of these killdisk/ZAP/fidisk's do it either re-write a new master boot record/sector and or delete all partitions. Some fill the disk will X's or 0's after they do this process which really kills the data. Anyhow I am rambling so I will stop.. CCleaner - i have found it very reliable and quick but everyone has thier favourite software. CCleaner is all I ever use now Steve Quote Run the Killdisk Well not gonna run it om my Laptop it is for a refurb I am putting together for someone. Scary HUH!!Quote QuoteRun the Killdisk never used killdisk but I'm sure it's OK if people suggest it. Fidsk or windows XP partition tool, (on boot up from xp CD) are both very safe and will wipe the disk ENOUGH for a re-install of windows.Quote Quotethank you downundersteve.QuoteRun the Killdisk Quote Raptor, just how does a manual registry cleaner work? Is what way is it manual? In that it doesn't scan for a list of errors but just gives you certain things that you can fix. Try RegCleaner and see for yourself, it only lists entries for installed programs and allows you to edit file extensions without really having to scan. Ok, it's not really a manual editor but it's not as automated and as CrapCleaner for example.Quote QuoteQuoteRun the Killdisk Actually, they're not very safe. The quick-format will not EVEN wipe reformat the HDD and the other format option probably isn't DoD compliant. Well, I'm not sure if KillDisk is either, though, but it's pretty decent. It can also immediatly tell you if there are any dead bad sectors on the HDD. Quote QuoteQuoteQuoteRun the Killdisk Ahhhh maybe I didn't make myself clear, what I mean by very safe is that unlike a low-level format you can not physically damage your HDD with fdisk or xp boot disk. Sorry for not making myself clear. If you are after a "Safe" method of erasing a drive you need at least 7 overight passes to be DOD compliant. A quick format is in no way DOD compliant. All a quick format does is marks the disk as available for a write procedure it leaves the actual data intact. Even a full format is pretty simple to recover as long as data has not been writen to the drive afterwards. For the highest level of secure erase it's a matter of debate some poel say 32 passes some say 35? The bad sector warning sound usefull though. Quote Second question is there any use in running a registry cleaner other than CCleaner?CCleaner is quite safe to use but it's not quite as thorough a registry cleaner as programs designed primarily as registry cleaners, as opposed to also doing a lot of disk cleanup like CCleaner. Therefore, you might want to use the RegCleaner that Raptor mentioned or another registry cleaner, in addition to CCleaner. I use CCleaner and I think it's a GREAT maintenance tool. However, I do occasionally use another registry cleaner Eusing Free Registry Cleaner. Quote Ahhhh maybe I didn't make myself clear, what I mean by very safe is that unlike a low-level format you can not physically damage your HDD with fdisk or xp boot disk. Sorry for not making myself clear, It does? :-? |

Solve : PC power consumption question? |
|
Answer» I have some question regarding electicity CONSUMPTION for a PC : 1) Does good quality monitor (i.e. monitor from a reputed company which is highly priced) consume less ELECTRICITY than a monitor from a not-so-reputed company? 2) Does reducing brightness or contrast of the monitor consume less electricity? 4) Will a defective monitor consume more electricity (say a monitor whose picture tube has become weak due to overuse) ? 4) At certain times when the PC hangs, I shut down the PC by switching it off ( not through the proper shut down METHOD). Does it affect the monitor also? In such case should i shut down the monitor switch before? 5) While surfing internet, there are times when i read or take note. that means I am not browsing pages then. Will it consume less electricity then, than while browsing? Note: Some QUESTIONS may seem stupid, but I need a reply. Quote 1) Does good quality monitor (i.e. monitor from a reputed company which is highly priced) consume less electricity than a monitor from a not-so-reputed company? Depends entirely on the parts used. LCD monitors generally use less power than a CRT monitor and if they adhere to certain standards (Such as "Energystar) they will be bound to use even less energy. I'm not too well educated on the standards, though. Quote 2) Does reducing brightness or contrast of the monitor consume less electricity? Good question, no idea. Even if it does, it MUST be negligble, though. Quote 4) Will a defective monitor consume more electricity (say a monitor whose picture tube has become weak due to overuse) ? No idea. Solve : HP printer Q? |
|
Answer» Hello - my first time here. I had to take my HP 1350 printer away from the computer and when I decided to set it up again it indicates that I need a startup cd for the WIZARD to run. I cannot find one anywhere here - is there a site where I can get such ? Thanks, steve in so azI suggest you GO to HP 1350 printer, select the exact product you have, and download the Software & driver for it. Thanks for helping me out. I went there and it looks like I have to buy the cd - is this normal ? Seems like they would download one to me free. I am not real knowledgeable about computers so any help would be appreciated. Thanks, steveYou can download the basic driver free, but the bundled software has to be ordered and paid for from HP. What are they wanting to charge for it? That is standard for elaborate printers and many scanners.Hold the phone ! Think I have it. It's downloading now - will take 2 hours Thanks, steveOn SECOND THOUGHT it's up to almost 3 hours now so think I'll try to call them instead and see if they can send a cd. thanks, steveQuote You can download the basic driver free, but the bundled software has to be ordered and paid for from HP. What are they wanting to charge for it? That is standard for elaborate printers and many scanners.Well, since he owns the printer and probably had the bundled software when originally purchased it, I believe he may be permitted to download the software, also. Right? Indeed, it appears he can download it. Have a look: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&product=306888&dlc=en&os=228 Some of the models do NOT have free downloads for the additional software period. Been there, seen that. OK, I'll accept that Some of the models do NOT have free downloads. But, the link you posted, which relates to his model printer, has a link to this page, HP Photosmart Essential software for photo editing, printing, and sharing, which appears to have no restriction. It appears to be available to anyone. I started the download, but interrupted it. Drivers are always free? :-?Right. But, at least sometimes, software, in addition to the driver, is free, such as HP Photosmart Essential software for photo editing, printing, and sharing. This appears to be more than a printer driver; it appears to be photo editing software. That is true on this printer at this time, SB. I have the identical printer and when looking for updated drivers a few MONTHS back, the big download with the imaging software was NOT available for download at all. That's why I said "been there..."Quote Right. But, at least sometimes, software, in addition to the driver, is free, such as HP Photosmart Essential software for photo editing, printing, and sharing. This appears to be more than a printer driver; it appears to be photo editing software. Oh, right, I evade that kind of software like the plague. |

Solve : how do I create a CD/DVD to read on any drive?? |
|
Answer» I have created several web pages using MS Publisher and loaded them on CD (& DVD) together with Legacy Family Tree and "linked" them with hyperlinks which are prefaced "D:\"; which works okay on my disc drive (and my son's which also is a "D" drive), but of course the hyperlinks don't work on computers which use say "G:\" drives for their comact discs. Can anyone suggest how I can format the files so that the hyperlinks to the files work on any drive? You COULD try making the links again but with a relative PATH, IE instead of "D:\" use "\". This works on my flash drive, I use an autorun file with relative paths to open my portable applications when I plug it in. Obviously the drive letter changes from computer to computer, so relative paths are the only way. Thanks Calum, I have tried that and it works!! Thanks so much, that was of GREAT assistance. CheersGood, I'm glad it worked for you |

Solve : Backing up or imaging the HD? |
|
Answer» Now that this computer has been "cleaned up" literally and figuratively, i'm thinking that i should back up the HD and maybe make a bootable CD. i know that there is a difference in backing up and imaging but i want to know if an image can be made without owning one of the imaging software programs? Someone told me that there is a way to do it remotely and store it there after you're finished. Does anyone know what that site is called and if it's safe? Then if i do need to buy one of the programs which one is easiest to use?Quote"Do the arithmetic. (250*0.18) / 4.7" So "backing up" means copying the unused space also? If not the figures are different aren't they? When you image a drive it does not include unused space...Quote from: Kryptonite on August 28, 2008, 08:40:33 AM "Do the arithmetic. (250*0.18) / 4.7" No. It doesn't mean copying the unused space. Did you actually look at, or try, the arithmetic calculation I posted? I guess not, or maybe you didn't understand it, so I'll explain it here. You wrote Quote If i "back up" using DVD's about how many do i need for a 250 gig HD that is only is only 18% used? The HD is 250 GB in size. 18% is the same as 0.18. So the amount of data to back up is (250 * 0.18) GB, or if you find it easier to understand, "Two hundred and fifty gigabytes times zero point one eight". The answer is 45 GB. You wanted to know how many DVDs that would fit on, so we divide that by 4.7 (The number of GB on a single layer DVD). The answer is 9.57. That means 9 whole disks and a bit more than half of a tenth disk. So you'd need 10 disks. I thought the arithmetic was pretty simple and OBVIOUS, I'm sorry if I made a mistake thinking that. If backing up meant copying the unused space, the number of disks woulb be 250 / 4.7 which comes out to around 54 disks. And that 0.18 would not be in the calculation I posted. You said: "I thought the arithmetic was pretty simple and obvious, I'm sorry if I made a mistake thinking that." Thank you for your taking the time and making the effort to clarify the numbers and methods needed to" do the math " or "arithmetic" as you called it in your LAST reply. The calculations required are the same as in these problems: 1. A 250 litre tank is 18% full. How many times will I need to put in a 4.7 litre bucket to empty it? 2. A 250 gram flour jar is 18% full. How many times will I need to put in a spoon holding 4.7 grams to empty it? 3. A container holds 250 squoggles of some substance when full. It is 18% full. How many 4.7 squoggle bottles will I need to use to hold its contents? I have not used this but have read good things about it: http://www.miray.de/products/sat.hdclone.html#free. NOTE that I think it will only image to a larger disk; in your case, i guess larger than 250 GB. Acronis: http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/, is an excellent paid program. Amazon price $34.00. Good idea to create an image - best of luck! |

Solve : MONITOR HAS DVI-D BUT PC HAS VGA? |
