Solve : Labtop recommendations?

Answer» Can anyone give me some Ideas on the best labtop for my son that's going to college. He also needs It for things he is doing In his CHURCH. Price range around $1000.00 or less?. Thanks. If you could give US more info on things he expects to be using it for, that would help. In college, will he use it mainly for Internet accesss, word processing, and email, or will he be using more demanding applications, perhaps something related to a SPECIFIC major in college?

There's really a lot to choose from, even in the $500 - $750 price range, as you see here, from newegg.com, a U.S. seller. Here's what they have in the $750 - $1,000 range. After use, which leads to SPECS, the next consideration is brand. Multiple opinions from multiple people "I'll never buy from xyz again" "I love xyz."

For what it's worth, my wife has had great experience with two HP laptops.

EDIT: ...and my son has had great success with three DELLS and one Emachine.

BTW, that thing is not for "lab" use, but to use it on your "lap".....LOL

Solve : Loud humming noise and very slow?

Answer»

Hi all,

The last couple weeks our computer at home has been making a loud humming noise and it is very slow. If I turn it off and leave it for a while or overnite, it usually goes away. This doesn't happen everyday, but probably 2 or 3 times a week maybe. It is impossible to use it when it gets in this mood cuz it is so slow when this happens, so I just close it down. :'(Is this SYMPTOMATIC of something that I should be attending to now? ???Please help. Any advice or suggestions are welcome.

Thanx! It sounds like fans are working really hard, making humming sound.
Turn computer off, open the CASE, and using can of compressed air, clean it well inside.
DO NOT use vacuum cleaner!!
What Windows version?
We'll go from there. Thanks for your speedy response.

Why would it only happen every so many days and not CONTINUOUSLY?

How do I open the case? Is it something fairly easy or do I have to be careful not to disturb something or break it in some way?

Thanks again! Quote

Why would it only happen every so many days and not continuously?
It probably depends on what programs you're using.
As for opening the case, what is your computer brand, and model? Not sure, will have to CHECK when I go home from work today. I know it is a Lenovo, but not sure what that means. Oh, this is laptop, huh?No, it's a regular PC.Oh, OK. Please, post the model, when you got home
Don't work too hard....heheheOkay, will do.

Can hardly wait to get out of here. Was going to a baseball game (Scrappers) tonite, but now it is downpouring rain, so I doubt it will still be on. Good to have an unexpected "free" evening!

Thanks for your help!You're welcome

Solve : moving 10 GB over the internet??

Answer»

Is this possible?

I have figured out how to move the files I need but they are 10GB.

Are there any consequences to this? Do internet providers LIMIT how much information I can download?

I have high speed .........how long do yo guys think this might take?

Thanks for all your helpI have a 20 mbit/second connection, and it would take me about 1 hour 20 minutes to download 10 GB from a server well connected to my ISP's backbone.

Most ordinary broadband connections are slower, e.g. a 2 Mbit connection would take about 13 hours.

But you have to get it up on the server and most high speed connections are assymetrical. My upload speed is 768 Mbit /sec. At this rate it would take about 30 hours to upload.

A fedex parcel with 3 DVD-Rs might be as fast.

Your own ISP will be the people to ask about any data caps they impose.
Ok,

I really didn't understand what you said but I did look at my connection and it said 100 mbps??

I am not sure about the assemtrical thing you said .......or basically anything else but I will check with my provider to see about the quantity.

The computer is in my other office.... sadly LOCKED. I can only access this computer with the Go to my PC program.

Sorry, side note.

Yeah, that may be a USB Floppy drive but I wouldn't want to transfer 10GB via floppy disks.

10GB = 10240MB / 1.38MB = 7421 floppy disks...

each floppy disk weighs, I'll guess, around 15 grams (might be more or less), 15 * 7421 = 111315 grams, or 111 kg.

something tells me that a 4.0GB flash drive would both cost and weigh less then over 7 thousand floppy discs...7421 Floppy Disks....That will take a long time to copy to, load into truck, unload into home, and copy off.

Actually it should be 14842 floppy disks, since we all know how reliable floppy disks can be

Solve : Question About Printers and Printer Speeds?

Answer»

I'm looking for a all in printer...and found at a real good price on sale...50 bucks.

Here is the link.............http://www.amazon.com/J3680-Officejet-All-One-Printer/dp/B0013TS0T0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1215310026&sr=1-1

The only thing is...it claims to print 20 black ppm/14 color pages per minute.

I wanted to know

1) What is considered good speed for a printer?
-Would this be too slow or do for my purposes..as a grad in college?

2) Those who know the model...how would you rate?

3) Is the model economical with ink...how can I tell before hand?
-At 50 bucks...should I take or all things considered pass?

Thanks.Though I cannot vouch for this particular model...I can say this...

HP is a maker of very dependable printers...there are better on the market, but at that price...you're getting a great deal for an all-in-one.

I've been using an HP PSC750 for years...and it's still running strong...not having to be serviced at all...for any reason.

Regarding your questions...read the reviews on this printer before purchase. Also make sure there are high-output cartridges available for it...to increase the number of pages you can print between cartridge changes.

1. Printing one page in two seconds is PRETTY fast for standard text, however...the ppm for black is probably based on draft text as opposed to formatted text. The speed for color printing from this printer is equally impressive.

2. I cannot rate this model, but like I said...can vouch for the HP product line.

3. As suggested...make sure there are "high output" cartridges available for this model, by visiting the manufacturers site for ink cartridges that fit this model. You'll find the cartridges shipped with this unit will not be...and may NEED to be replaced sooner than you thought. Also check out the prices of the ink cartridges before purchasing...this may influence your decision to purchase.I agree with Saviour. The printing speeds are pretty good.
Ink can get pretty expensive but I wouldn't worry about it too much.

I don't know much about what you need for college but that's a good deal for a printer like that.thanks!I agree with Saviour that 20 ppm is pretty fast and that it is almost certainly for draft quality 5% coverage. Cut that in half for standard quality and maybe in half again for best quality, i.e. 5 ppm and less for colour. The colour speed is probably for text, 5% coverage, and any large areas of colour or pictures is going to slow it down dramatically. My Canon ip4200 quoted black speed of 29 ppm but it reduces to about 15 or 10 if you choose standard or best.

I am sure that the speed of the printer you mentioned will be fine for your purposes. Printer makers compete over page per minute speeds because it's an ATTENTION getter, but UNLESS you're doing bulk printing you won't notice a difference of a few ppm. If you are doing bulk printing you should spend more than $50 on a printer, as the replacement ink will cost you about $50 per set of cartridges, and such a cheap printer will wear out quite quickly under very heavy use.

Solve : inverted L shape on top of all windows??

Answer»

hello all,

am having a strange glitch in windows xp sp2. A shell "trace" is being displayed on all and any window i open in EXPLORER (and in iexplorer as well) . the pic will ilustrate better (the inverted L shape is present on top of all the windows i open) . i dont recall any modifications to the system that could have caused this and am totally clueless.

any help would be great?

thanks

[image rehosted by Calum to avoid apparent graphic images at original location]Did you restart the computer?INTERESTING issue. I would imagine rebooting the computer as mentioned above would likely resolve this graphical glitch. If not, I'd suggest trying to update your video drivers.I actually had the same problem yesterday when I screwed around with Dexpot.
A simple reboot fixed it. reboot didnt solve it..actually am using deep freeze, would that affect anything?..btw, am using an nvidia fx 5500 128 mb..

any other suggestions? What's Deep Freeze?http://www.faronics.com/html/deepfreeze.aspNice. I don't know how it works but do you think it's possible you had this problem and then installed Deep Freeze?Appart from trying different video drivers I can't think of any other suggestions. This is the first for me. But if this is only happening in explorer/iexplorer windows it's got to be related to the GRAPHICS drivers. I really can't think of how deep freeze or any other utility would cause this.

Any other members have ideas on this one?Have you TRIED restoring your browser settings to their defaults and clearing the temporary internet cache to see if this resolves the issue?I don't understand something:
Quote

A shell "trace" is being displayed on all and any window i open in explorer (and in iexplorer as well)
What do you mean by "and in iexplorer"? Where else beside IE?If you are using deep freeze this means the problem exists with the install that deep freeze is reverting back to on every restart. If it is not a graphical error it may be a registry error. I would advise using a registry cleaner to try to find the problem. If you do not have access to the admin for deep freeze, you need to present this problem to the person who has access to it.How are you using deep freeze? Can you thaw it and then make changes? I know that deep freeze can be horrible sometimes and just makes life difficult! Solve : Twitter Junk Posts?

Answer»

Not sure how but, someone had got in my twitter account an posted a bunch of junk about surverys an wanted to remove themQuote

- Change Password immediately so that they cant post any more.
- Change your security account recovery settings so that they cant use pet name, or other security questions to bypass your new password and be able to GET back in again.
- Go in and manually delete the posts that they posted.
And that should be the end of the problem unless your password is too easy to crack or a keylogger or packet sniffer is sending information back to a hacker. 99% of the time the problem is solved by following the above routine.

99% of the accounts out there get hacked when people do the following:
- Use the same password or similar passwords among all things that they log into. ( For example if you registered with a website to play a free online game etc and their password database is not secured or they are a ROGUE identity, and they have your e-mail address you used during the registration confirmation process, and they too may have asked for mothers maiden name, pet names, friends names, places you grew up or went to school, favorite color, and all the other security setting options. Similar passwords being " YourPassword1 , YourPassword2 "), in whicha hacker could test "YourPassword3" with your e-Mail address against all sorts of other online accounts such as banks, stores, facebook, twitter, MYSPACE, and anywhere else they want to test it against to try to get in, and if its YourPassword3 for any of them, they are in!
*Its always best Never to use Maiden Names for any security reset options online which can be used in the wrong hands to open loans out against your name etc whenever this can be avoided.
*Also its best to use false birth dates on online REGISTRATIONS where they dont need to really know your birthday, but its a requirement of registration, "and where it is not illegal to post false information". (Coupons.com, Facebook, Myspace etc dont need to know your true birthday and you can post false information if you chose to do so. Registering for a loan online with a real bank, where it should really be conducted at a bank face to face with the teller or loan officer is an example where you cant lie unless you want to be given a $10,000 fine and posible jail time for giving false information ) *I personally use an alias birthday vs my real birthday so that if anyone did try to pretend to be me, they would have the birthday wrong and a greater than 1 in 365 chance of figuring it out because I also used the wrong year.

- Strong passwords should always be used even though there is debate whether there is still a such thing as a strong password. ( Never use 123456, password, Password, names and words from dictionaries, curse words) Its best to use phrases or sentence portions that are not common to make it easy to remember for yourself and give a password cracker a password that isnt easy to brute force attack and crack. Example of a good one is find a book you like, and open a random page in the book, and look at a paragraph for something you liked about this book that would be easy for you to remember, but not common to be guessed. You then find the sentence such as " The sky was dark and the air was COOL." And you can do any number of things to this to make it a strong password, such as Tswdatawc87$ ( using the first letters of each word in that sentence, then 87 for year 2100-2013 and $ to add uncommon characters to the jumble.) * Also the more number/letter/upper&lower case/ special characters you can add to it, and the longer the length of the password the strongest the password will be. (( BUT TRY TO AVOID PASSWORDS WITH paired characters such as "ee EE 11 00 777 oo Booo 2011" etc, as for passwords with paired like characters are easier to crack. The algorithm works best with unalike neighboring characters to the left and right side of the character in comparison ))

The strongest I could think of for "The sky was dark and the air was cool." as a 12 character password is " T5wd4taWcB7$ "( substituting the S for 5, a for 4, 8 for B, and making the second w to a W) But when you have a password like this, it may make you want to keep it written on a sheet of paper near your computer until memorized, and then if say someone who has access to your computer finds it and they want to logon as you, they are in...LOL

Unless you are a direct target of a hacker or group of hackers they are going to move on to much easier targets even if you used a password similar to Tswdatawc87$ these are older post from october so I doubt they are still login but, I want rid of themContact Twitter...I had and I also figured out how to delete them

Chances are there's no JavaScript support whatsoever.
Many older phone models do use Java to RUN their applications. My old Samsung Vice used it, my MOM's old Motorola Razer used it, and her very old phone supported it too...
Whether or not it supports JavaScript is different, and would be up to the browser itself. Some phones use Opera Mini as their primary web browser, others use a small browser client that may or may not support it.

The only way to be certain is to test it out. This handy website (which I found from googling "does my browser support JavaScript" without quotes) tells you when you click the test button. http://m.adspeed.com/Knowledges/262/Problems_Account/howto_test_browser_supports_JavaScript.html
If the button pops up saying you've passed, you have JavaScript, otherwise you don't.

Solve : slow youtube?

Answer»

I'm trying to figure out why usually but not always the Youtubes I watch are so slow resulting in constant buffering. And it could be that different Youtube videos may play FASTER. More than one cause I suppose. I have windows 7 and the computer is quite fast/capable if you look at the properties however it is 3 years old. I have Malware Bytes and AVG installed and I've tried disabling these without making any difference. My home network is password protected. It's 7am and the video I'm watching is very slow so wouldn't the bandwidth be okay? And as I write this the whole computer is slow to load pages etc. Maybe I should address this as just a slow computer? Other times though pages load just fine. Go to speedtest.net and run a speed test several times throughout the day. Record the time you ran the tests and the results (upload, download, and ping). Do this for a few days and SEE whether a pattern emerges, a pattern that shows variation in the speeds between different times of day. And, see whether you can correlate the speed test results with the issues you're having with onlne videos.

Regarding your computer's performance, as opposed to your Internet connection speed, open Task Manager (Ctrl/Alt/Del) and keep in an eye on CPU usage and Physical Memory usage when you experience slow video issues. This might help determine whether there is a general computer performance issue or strictly an Internet connection speed issue.

If you haven't cleared browser history for a long time, do it, close and reopen your browser, and then see whether video performance improves. If you are lax on clearning of browser history, you may need to get in the habit of doing it more often.

Solve : PS/2 keyboard interface?

Answer»

Hi!

I would just like to know what the PS/2-keyboard interface look like. Is it RS232 or?

Best regards, Roger
PS
Today I managed to manually and serially clock data to a LCD-display by USING a cross-coupled pair of NAND-gates (i.e a contact-bounce eliminator) and a manual clock-switch. I yelled happiness when I got this to work. Most importantly, my technical manager laughed when he asked how I have used a computer and I said "what computer"!http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PS/2_connectorHi quaxo!

Thanks for the link.

I have now read it but did not get that much wiser.

The things I did however learn were:

1) Serial data at 10 to 16 kHz with 1 stop bit, 1 start bit, 1 parity bit (odd)
2) Actual pin configuration.

4 pins seems to be used in the (FEMALE, counted in a very special way) pin connector. These are:

1) Pin 1, DATA
2) Pin 3, GND
3) Pin 4, VCC
4) Pin 5, CLK

The rest of the pins (2) are not used.

This seems easy enough.

The question is how data is configured.

Is it plain "TTL" (0-5V), a start-bit, a stop-bit and a parity-bit only?

Or is it some RS232 with +/-5V?

I am sorry, but that Wikipedia article did not reveal this.

This means that the question remains.

Best rergards, Roger
PS
It seems like the start-bit is a zero (>3V) and the stop-bit is a one (<-3V).

This implies that the parity-bit should be <-3V (=1) for odd.

But this is only if the protocol actually is RS232.

To which I've linked an article that shows a picture answering your question. You didn't ask anything about data in your initial question.

PS/2 is not an RS-232 type. It replaced the RS-232 DB-9 type plugs for the purpose of a mouse, and the AT DIN-5 for the purpose of a keyboard. All of this is outlined in that article and other articles linked to it. Take the TIME to read everything. Use Google, research a bit.

Do you have a specific question, problem, or issue you're trying to resolve? Please be more specific about what you need.Hi quaxo!

Thank you for your reply.

I will do as you suggest that is to do some research of my own.

I have however done some but haven't got that much wiser.

But I will do some more.

You should know that this is not an immediate emergency.

This is just a wish.

I am designing a CPU using a CPLD.

It seems like I might actually be able to make it work. But I am still unsure. Yet, there is some hope.

And if I ever get it to work I might want to expand the input interface to incorporate an actual PS/2 keyboard.

Right now I am just using two simple BCD-switches.

But it would be nice if I could use a keyboard instead in that amazing possibility that my CPU will actually work.

I have chosen PS/2 DUE to simplicity.

Or so I thought...

Finally, I thought that the whole point of a forum is to cut corners REGARDING research emforts...

Best regards, Roger

Solve : Automaticly generated code?

Answer»

Hi!

I suck at programming. I especially suck at modern programming but this is a theory I have with regard to why modern computers are so unneccesarily slow (disregarding SSD-disks).

Listen to this:

Modern High-Level languages seems to have predefined functions, procedures or macroes that actually are so flexible that they can fix almost anything you want.

This means that they have lots of input and output parameters that are useful for arbitrary programming.

In most cases just a fraction of these parameters are actually used.

This means that the compiler has to generate lots of machine code which never is used.

Which slows down the CPU due to the fact that it has to chew it all and not only the neccesary function.

Please correct me if I am wrong. And I mean that :-)

Best regards, RogerQuote from: rogerk8 on December 07, 2012, 07:38:00 PM

Modern High-Level languages seems to have predefined functions, procedures or macroes that actually are so flexible that they can fix almost anything you want.
This makes no sense, whatsoever. Most High Level language functionality is not done via functions, procedures, or macros at a lower level, but compiled directly. For example, loops are done via Assembly Jumps. macros expand to other code. (By the way, Macros are HEAVILY used in any real assembly program beyond the trivial, so that argument easily applies to Assembly as well).

Quote
This means that they have lots of input and output parameters that are useful for arbitrary programming.
Name ONE example of this. Just one. I assure you there isn't an example of this that applies. C functions that take many arguments, for example, printf(), uses varargs, which allow for any number of arguments. The low-level DESIGN results in no extra epilog or prolog code in the function itself.

Quote
In most cases just a fraction of these parameters are actually used.

Again, citation needed. C++ overloads means that very seldom is even a single argument omitted or STUBBED out. Even for most typical case where the overloads each call into a function with more arguments, eg:

Code: [Select]public int somefunction(int firstargument){ somefunction(firstargument,5);}
public int somefunction(int firstargument,int secondargument){return firstargument ^ secondargument;}
The result for calls to the first function will be a call to the second function with the given 5 as a parameter. However, even though the second parameter is "unused" it has absolutely no measurable impact on performance, even when done in tight loops. If you can provide a citation or proof that an extra parameter of this sort (or any number of extra parameters, below the ridiculous) has a perceptible performance impact, I'd LOVE to see it. Otherwise, it's just random musings. Additionally, if the two functions are flagged as inline, it's not atypical that the compiler will put the result inline where the function is called (eliminating any theoretical function call overhead, which itself can have a measurable impact if you are running 35 year old hardware).

Quote
This means that the compiler has to generate lots of machine code which never is used.
No it doesn't. In fact the very purpose of functions is to generate less code. That is also why most compilers will not inline function calls above a certain size (and also why the inline directive in C and C++ is more a guideline to the compiler saying that it can be inlined, not that it should be inlined; depending on the compiler's analysis it might not inline it, because the result of inlining is always larger code (a la "generating more machine code") and it doesn't take long for any performance benefit to inlining to be LOST due to a larger amount of code being dealt with.

Quote
Which slows down the CPU due to the fact that it has to chew it all and not only the neccesary function.
The only merit to your argument would be with prolog and Epilog code. Which can be confirmed via any number of code trace tools as taking very little processor time compared to everything else; even on a 8088 it was almost imperceptible.

Anyway, to once again address your entire argument that Assembly is "Better" than other languages, it's not. Can a hand-tuned Assembly program run faster than an equivalent program written in another language? Yes. Yes it can. But that comes with costs. First, often the performance difference is barely measurable. Second, the actual extensibility and maintainability of the program- even a well commented one, drops to abysmal levels. The number of bugs skyrockets, not because of assembly itself being used, but simply because, by using assembly, the amount of that code skyrockets, resulting in more bugs. More code being written means more bugs, no matter how careful a program is or how skilled they are. Additionally, Transformation inefficiencies- (Which is the term for what you are talking about) Have been practically eliminated; Fact is that the idea of writing software is to get people to use it, and a piece of software that exists is going to sell a lot better than one that does not. We can wax philosophical about how "everything will be better using Assembly" but the thing is it doesn't work that way. Developing will be a gigantic pain in the *censored*, there will be absolutely no modularity to the design outside that provided by your assembler, which often uses macros that are completely vendor specific to the assembler itself, so you'll be dependent on a single vendor for your Assembler... UNLESS you write your own- and that's further development costs on top of that. So what do we end up with? Let's go with a large software product, like a Word Processor. Assembly brings- if written properly- speed improvements.

1. Word processors spend most of their time idle, and waiting for user input. You can't exactly idle for user input faster.
2. The Assembly doesn't magically make things faster. Even relatively advanced Assembly programmers don't match a good compiler, especially on modern instruction sets. The only time Assembly really works is as a low-level optimization for something that has already had it's performance squeezed. For example, Michael Abrash focusses primarily on Assembly optimizations in "Graphics Programming Black Book". One such discussion revolves around how his expertise was applied to optimize the Hidden Surface removal algorithms in Quake. The original algorithms first got improved; I believe there wer eseveral chapters of completely language-agnostic discussion about the correct choice of algorithm and why he/they decided to go with, say, Edge surface caching. The desired memory and CPU minimum for the game (a 486 with 8MB of RAM) were a roadblock to C at the time. C Compilers were alright, but you could still save a considerable amount of processing time and Memory when you did Assembly instead- but only when you did it properly.

Another point is that the entire Quake source was not Assembly. Only time critical portions. Some other parts were temporarily converted to Assembly, but the performance gains weren't worth the loss in maintainability, (and sometimes there weren't any performance gains at all). The only parts that were CHANGED to use Assembly were the parts they were sure could benefit from some hand-tuned Assembly. Additionally, it was necessary- if the game ran appreciably well in a 486 with 8MB of RAM in C, iD would have never bothered to use Assembly for some of the segments of the game. Because it would have been nothing more than a waste of memory. All Programs can be made faster, but there is no point making a program that is fast enough faster, because that extra speed is meaningless.

Today, those optimizations, which took John Carmack and Michael Abrash Several Months to work out and get implemented, do nothing for the game today. They were vital at the time in order to meet the goal (run on certain Processors and Memory requirements), but do nothing for it today. In fact, some programs that were optimized in Assembly run provably slower than a Higher Level language would, simply because the Assembly is static- The Quake Hidden Surface Removal did not magically use new instructions that were released in later processors when they were available. Compilers, however, can turn the same code into Machine instructions that take advantage of those instructions as necessary. Just-in-time compiled languages like Java and .NET languages add to this even further; you can run them on a variety of platforms, and ahve massive advantages; for example, a C# program can run in native x64 mode on 64-bit processors, and take advantage of any available instructions. It will use SSE, MMX, and other extended instructions if they are available. The advantage here is that the same source code compiles to all sorts of different machine instructions, optimized for various architectures as needed. With Assembly, you would spend months optimizing for a very specific processor and memory requirements, and sometimes those optimizations are wasted as your assumptions or testing of instruction cycles suddenly proves false on a later processor. This is exactly the reason why so many programs that were written in the 80s and early 90's using Assembly are absolutely useless today. It's not because Operating Systems and Processors have advanced as much as it is that the code was written with the assumption that both those things would stay static.

Solve : Buying quality sound headphones!?

Answer»

Hello bros!
I am in the midst of buying a pair of quality headphones and would like some input from you
Here is some information that might help you understand what I'm looking for

What music do I listen to?
Quite a lot of different genres. It differs between electronic music (dubstep, house..), hiphop, rap and others. But to narrow it down I'd say electronic and hiphop.

What do I find important when it comes to sound?
Well, I really want quality audio. I'm not looking for headphones that focus solely on bass nor treble but sort of a mix between these. I LOVE a deep bass THOUGH, to go with my love for dubstep drops etc. But I'm not interested in beats by dre.

With what will I use them?
Mainly two things. With my computer for producing/listening to music and with my iPhone on-The-go. I'm also planning on getting an external soundcard LATER on! This means that I want headphones that don't weigh too much. Mobility is a plus!

Budget
Around $250

what type of headphones?
I prefer over-ear

Description of what I want.
I want some sort of hybrid headphones between producer and casual (high quality) listening if that makes any sense. I want to be able to MAKE music with clear and precise sound but still enjoy deep "goosebump" bass.

Many headphones I have tried so far have bass with no punch or great bass but a treble that hurts. I don't want this

Lastly I'm quite sensitive when it comes to fit, there's nothing worse than headphones with a too loose fit!

I realise I sound extremely picky but don't hesitate whatever you think might suit me!

Sincerely
Sebastian.

Solve : Need a laptop?

Answer»

I'm heading off to university next year, so I need to buy a laptop for school. I'm looking for something that follows this:

  • >=4GB RAM
  • ~15" screen
  • >=500GB HDD
  • i5 or equivalent CPU
  • DVD drive (I specify this only because I know some laptops don't)
  • bare minimum 2 USB ports, at least 4 preferable
  • Not sure about battery life. Should be able to last me through my classes.
  • $400-$700
  • Canadian, or with relatively cheap shipping rates to Canada

I know you guys always get threads like these with little-to-no information, so I tried to provide as much as possible. Any help is appreciated. When I was in college and laptops were in the thousands of dollars I bought a Factory Refurb Toshiba Portege Pentium 3 600Mhz Laptop from Tiger Direct for $399.99 which was about 2 years old and like $1099 new. I had a minor problem with the acupointer drifting on it and they overnighted me a replacement in a box with lots of grey foam with INSTRUCTIONS on how to RETURN it without it costing me a cent with prepaid return label. The 2nd laptop I still have today 12 years later, although I rarely use it in favor of faster more modern laptops.

If you have difficulties finding a new Core i5 Laptop that is within your budget, you can always check into Factory Certified Refurbs. My Toshiba that I got came with a 1 year warranty at the time and the accupointer acted up just slightly 9 months later. I placed phone call with Tiger Direct who then gave me Toshiba's contact info and I was then able to RMA it and get a replacement.

Here is a Core i5 ASUS that matches your specs: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=7371365&CatId=4936

Warranty on this is 3 months parts/labor. Maybe there are other brands out there with longer warranties or an extended warranty option. ASUS offers 3 months on refurbs and other brands might have longer warranties.

As far as battery life goes for a Core i5 laptop, your probably looking at a maximum battery life of 3 to 4 hrs, and possibly lesser if running intensive programs even with power management set in the BIOS and OS to be conservative. If you could get by with a small netbook, you could get up to 9 hrs of use per charge such as my Toshiba Netbook 205B with Atom Dual-core CPU. But my netbook has a 10.1" screen, 3 USB ports, no optical drive unless I connect one to USB port as an external, and it originally came with a 160GB SATA hard drive and I upgraded to a OCZ 90GB SSD SATA hard drive to get faster performance and run on less power, but at 70GB less storage.

I am thinking that if you have 2 classes that require this laptop to be in use for like an hour each you will probably be fine, but any more than that without docking your laptop to an outlet to power and recharge at the same time, it will die on you in the 3rd or 4th hour of use. A friend of mine bought an extra battery for his Pentium 4 laptop way back in college so he could swap batteries and be back up and running another 2 hrs.
I realize that this thread is GETTING a little long in the tooth but if the O/P has YET to commit to a purchase a couple of points to consider.
1.Have a chat with the course directors and ask for input as to what needs to be emphasized in the purchase that would be optimum for the courses that you shall be taking.
2.Investigate if the University has an assistance program that allows students to purchase computers at reduced prices. Some do.
truenorthAlso, use the laptop before you buy it.

Make sure you like the KEYBOARD, touchpad, and display.

It looks like some kind of binary file that you have opened in a text editor like Notepad. Why you have done this we don't know. The file is not in any kind of secret code. Since you have not told us where you got it, or why you need to have it "decoded" or indeed why you started the thread in the first place, it is unlikely that you will get any kind of useful information.

You asked what it was. I answered. From what you gave it appears to be a Microsoft Character file, and that, as a result, it's not "encoded" in any particular way. That's all I can tell you. You provided no background on what it is, where you got it, or why you need to figure out what it is. If you need explanations, ask for them, please.
This is not the first time the OP has posted a great long streak of stuff with a "what is this?" question. Put simply, acs files are "character" files used by Windows Search and MS Office when showing a Search or Office Assistant. From left to right, Mover, Merlin, Courtney and Earl. Each one has an .acs file which contains the binary data necessary to SHOW and animate the character. If you show binary data in a text editor you see stuff that looks like "secret code" but it is not hiding anything. There is no message or hidden stuff. They are normally stored in the C:\WINDOWS\srchasst\chars folder, and there are REGISTRY keys under HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Search Assistant.

Solve : Android Repair?

Answer»

Don't know where it's appropriate to post a phone repair question here, but it seems like it wouldn't be far out of the wheelhouse of folks that post here frequently.

(Additionally, it always seems like people on Android forums have to type in a hurry, because Mom is yelling at them to wash their hands and come to dinner...)

Need some diagnostic advice, and also some hardware replacement hand-holding.

I have a TMO GALAXY Note (1), but this isn't necessarily specific to the one MODEL as much as a general phone question.

Last Monday, I noticed a streak and a shadow across a picture I was taking:

This is on the rear camera, not the front facing camera.

It had worked fine on Saturday. I had dropped the phone on Sunday - but no worse, I thought, than any other drops! (Setting it down, after a call, it slipped off the nightstand).

Physically inspecting the phone, I saw what looked like a hairline crack over the lens cover. This made sense to me; the "streak" is from the crack, and the "shadow" is literally the shadow the crack is throwing from the lens cover on to the lens itself.

I replaced the MIDDLE bezel, which contains the plastic lens cover:

That did not work. The same "streak" and "shadow" appear in images.

So now I'm stymied, from a diagnostic point of view. How could the camera lens itself be scratched, since it is well protected inside the phone? Alternately, what could be causing this issue, if not a scratch?

From a hardware hand-holding point of view: I successfully swapped out the bezel. It appears that replacing the camera itself isn't that difficult.

Has anyone done this? Is it more difficult than it appears?

  • There's a repair shop a few blocks away (Welcome to Gadget Fix!), is this the kind of thing that I'd be better off paying them for?
  • What should I expect to pay for a repair?
  • What else should I be asking?

ThanksI'd remove the bezel again and use a light and magnifier to inspect the actual lens...it could be as small as a cat hair to do that....You know, I thought that. Because it does look a BIT debris-like, not really scratch-like.

Trouble is - no pets in the house, so it would have to be a human hair...? OK, so maybe it's not hair but something hair-like.

When I had the bezel out, I played a bit with the camera itself (well, the lens and the piece of plastic it's mounted in; there's a power/data ribbon that comes out) to see how it's attached (by a power/data ribbon, as it turns out); when I did, I didn't see anything. Now, that's with the naked eye - not with any type of magnifier. I hit it (not literally) with a little bit of compressed air; all of this was before I took the pic I posted.

But I will hunt down some kind of magnifier - and check it out in morning light. Thanks for the tip.

I'm presuming it's not software, or it would also appear on images from the front-facing camera.

(ETA: I just decided to try zooming the camera, and as it zooms, the "scratch" and "Shadow" images do move offscreen and appear (it's very subtle) to GET wider.)It appears that your "scratch?" & "shadow" are not consecutive or reflective of each other. The scratch is random whereas the shadow is a straight/er line. Seems to me that they are independent of each other. A small knock might have dislodged the camera's alignment and is causing a distortion of the lens.

As to actually changing the camera, perhaps you could search youtube for some actually removal techniques.

Here's a magnifier "Jewelry Loupe" I recently purchased, it was very cheap about $8.00 Australian posted free. I've found it very handy. It might be useful to view the insides. on EbayGood advice Imno...i have an antique one ...
Use it often...

Did you just reformat or did you install an operating system during or after the process?Unfortunately ones ability (in this case yours) to be able to alter any software components WITHOUT ACCESS to a viewable screen is well nigh impossible. Do they use any other computer for email? Just using outlook. Think it maybe pop 3. Solve : adsl and router?

The link given above was provided by a google search parameter of "components needed for an adsl service ?" truenorthno offence, but that still raised a bit more questions for me . I need these things explained .sorry Yes i DID expect that it WOULD cause you to have more questions that is why i referenced the fact that the information was derived from a google search (parameter defined). As well as offering solutions-which i have--we here on the CH forums try to encourage technical knowledge development that does involve some personal commitments by people posing questions. truenorthYeah, I asked for help, I know nothing about this.I did research before and this was my last resort, I just dont get any of these things, sights explain but not what I want to know. So, you've NEVER searched for information by using a search engine/service such as Google.com, Yahoo.com, Bing.com, etc.? Searching on a phrase such as what is adslwill yield plenty of information on the subject. Anyway, here's a good reference: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ADSL

Well, afrihost should be able to answer those questions for you. After all, they are the service provider. I presume you live/work WITHIN their geographic area of service. But, afrihost should be able to confirm that for you. I'd call them back and simply ask whether their ADSL service is available in your area.

A router is a device which allows using one incoming Internet line to be used by multiple computers. I am talking about small ROUTERS used in home or small business environments. Where only one computer will be used on an ADSL line, a router is usually optional. A modem, on the other hand, is a required device. Here, in Ohio, my ADSL service provider provided the modem I'm using. I bought a router since I have multiple computers using my Internet line. The router is connected to the modem and computers and my network-capable printer are connected to the router. Quote from: kyleo on December 15, 2010, 07:35:36 AM

This is a phone line into your house, suitable for broadband. Your phone company can tell you if it is suitable.

and router

This is a box you plug all your computers into, or you can get wireless ones, and then plug the box into your broadband device (a "modem") so they can all share the service. They cost about 50 US dollars upwards; I don't know what that is in Rand.

Why don't you just call 011 612 7200 and ask the guys at Afrihost? I'm sure they'd LOVE to help you so they can get your business. THis is the best way to get your questions answered.

If you feel like it, recommend me additional "stuff" you feel like is needed (e.g. some type of speakers).

Please somehow indicate/separate ANSWERS from must-have and recommended "stuff" .A lot of people like to pick up a cooling pad, external monitor, external keyboard and mouse, speakers. There are a lot of choices for hardware.

Solve : How does the computer connect to the Internet?

Hello,

Could you direct me to a web page or a tutorial where I can learn how the computer connects to the internet. I am interested in what happens inside the computer, when you enter a URL or click on a link (with regard to Proxy Settings, DNS settings, HOSTS File etc.)

Thank you.
The OSI Model
http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/designosimodel/g/bldef_osi.htm

floccinaucini, what do you already know?
Did you read the general article on Wikipedia?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Proxy

Proxy can be either software in your computer, or a special feature inside a ROUTER or gateway device. Also, IE can be set to always use a proxy.
Hello Sir, Geek-9pm

Yes I read the Wikipedia article about the proxy server and this aspect is quite clear. Some of the 'Wiki' articles are too technical for me and I get LOST in them but this ONE is OK. On the contrary, I learn MUCH from the CH tutorials because they are easily understood with limited prior knowledge.

About Networking, my knowledge is almost nil. Hence, the subject of this thread. What I really want to learn is about the different ways that the computer settings work. How the computer connect to the internet depending on the different ways the proxy settings, DNS settings, the Hosts file etc. are configured.

Thank you.

If you do, the Spammer knows that you are there and alive, so you get more.
Check if your Service Provider has a Spam filter (Safest), if not , search for Spam filters on the Internet. Be careful, as some of these may be a Virus or Spammer as well. the spam filter is akismet and is supplied by wordpress so its doing its job well enoughIt seems that the link is a technique used to make a fake e-mail messages to Spammer , fill its database with MANY of the titles fabricated
