Solve : What does Connection Not Encrypted Mean? |
Answer» Hi again, would someone please help me with this problem. I knowI have mentioned MSN Games before but this is something new I found. I have been trying to play Text Twist on MSN Games for a while now and for some reason I can't. I was playing it at one point but I can't any longer. I just opened the Properties on the Right Click and it says - CONNECTION - NOT ENCRYPTED... Could that be why I can't get the game to load and play? Thanks! Not encrypted means the communication on the site is not secured of which most browsers NOWADAYS are continously improving. Quote A secure connection is an encrypted exchange of information between the website you are visiting and Internet Explorer. Encryption is provided through a document the website provides called a certificate. When you send information to the website, it is encrypted at your computer and decrypted at the website. Under normal circumstances, the information cannot be read or tampered with while it is being sent, but it's possible that someone might find a way to decode the encryption.http://windows.microsoft.com/en-ph/windows7/how-to-know-if-an-online-transaction-is-secure See also http://zone.msn.com/en/support/article/support4211.htm Hi jason2074, thank you for replying... however, you didn't relate all that info to my question. I'm a basic sort of gal and my main need was to find out if this was the reason I couldn't load and play MSN game(s). By the way you used the term Certificates. That term, as you probably know is at the bottom of the properties page. I think it is a clickable. I haven't clicked on it though. I get skittish about clicking things I know NOTHING about. So now, could this be the reason I can't get some MSN Games to load and if so is there a way to fix it? Also, does it matter what version IE I'm using. I'm using IE8 on WVSP2. If you suspect it to be browser related you can always install Firefox on the system and see if this DIFFERENT browser is able to play the game. If it is able to play it then it was an IE issues of some kind. If problem remains then its a system problem.Hi DaveLembke I'm not suspecting it's anything. I'm trying to find out from someone here as this site offers help about comps et al, if you guys have encountered this problem before and if it could be that because of the NOT ENCRYPTED whatever that is, that the reason I can't play MSN Games. I really don't want 2, 3, or 4, browsers on my puter. I will say this... I opened the Properties of another MSN Game and found the same thing but I was playing that game. Yes, I am aware that not all games play alike. Quote I just opened the Properties on the Right Click and it says - CONNECTION - NOT ENCRYPTED...Properties Dialog Box for an Encrypted Web Page Indicates That the Connection Is Not Encrypted Quote whatever that is, that the reason I can't play MSN Games.Troubleshoot problems playing online games using Internet Explorer Quote I really don't want 2, 3, or 4, browsers on my puter.Securing Your Web Browser Quote Multiple web browsers may be installed on your computer. Other software applications on your computer, such as email clients or document viewers, may use a different browser than the one you normally use to access the web. Also, certain file TYPES may be configured to open with a different web browser. Using one web browser for manually interacting with web sites does not mean other applications will automatically use the same browser. For this reason, it is important to securely configure each web browser that may be installed on your computer. One advantage to having multiple web browsers is that one browser can be used for only sensitive activities such as online banking, and the other can be used for general purpose web browsing. This can minimize the chances that a vulnerability in a web browser, web site, or related software can be used to compromise sensitive information.*Sighs* Ahh, Jason, I need someone to talk to me not shove info at me. I feel another migraine coming. If you have assumed that I'm comp lit in the least. Don't, because I'm not. I drive AOL techs mad. I'll get back to this later. Thanks all. Not sure what you mean... as most of your queries are documented by the provided links. You just need to read/understand what those causes and or error messages meant. Sorry if I couldn't help you beyond as I'm sure notable members would step in place to provide more assistance.Msg read Jason, and I do appreciate that you took the time to help me. It's just I can't process anything now. And I feel the problem is MSN's as members have been complaining about their games more than a decade and still are. It seems MSN would do something to make their games more playable to everyone or remove them. It so frustrating when some of their games work and other won't unless you perform surgery on your comp. Well, I'm no surgeon. That's all Jason. Thanks for your time... I received an email that my topic was split. Why?? And there is a SOLVED at the bottom. I thought it was up to the OP to say whether or not a topic they started was resolved to their satisfaction not the admins. I never said I am satisfied with the huge amount of reading Jason posted. I have been reading crap on MSN for years about their games and still don't comprehend whay it all means. I wanted a simply "Yes" or "No" reply to a problem. What I got was the same thing I get in MSN. And where is the poster's reply that came in a bit ago? If you don't know the answer you don't know, but someone else in here may as Jason pointed out. There's no need to close my topic. It's not resoled to my satisfaction and I'd like you to repost the post that came in a few minutes ago. Your Topic is not closed...And after checking the split was created by some yo-yo spammer who happened to reply to your Topic. The only way for us to remove idiots like that is to "split" their post out of the Topic and delete/move them to SPAM... If you really want to see that reply i can re-post it... Hope this clears things up.Hello Patio, thanks for the clarification; I was simply going bythe fact that a post that had just come in was removed and when I came in the read the second from Allan (I think it was) I saw the words Topic Solved at the bottom of the page. To me when a topic is solved it it usually closed and isn't in need of more replies. I APPRECIATED that Jason posted to me however, as someone who is nowhere near a comp geek, I work in basic terms first then expansions. So what I needed was a simple yes or no answer about the term I quoted. From there a yes would have me trying to figure out how to rectify the problem. A no would have closed this topic for me. Most things on the computer to fix requires more than one click. You must click and click and click. I'm not there. And I don't pretend to be. That's why I come to you guys. Becuase you are. Enjoy your Sunday. Thanks guys... The Topic Solved button is there at the bottom of every page...it does not mean your Topic was marked solved...which it isn't.I never saw it before the post where I complained. Not that I ever looked for it. I did however think that I scanned the entire page when looking for the NOTIFY button. Although, my limited vision certainly could have prevented my seeing it. NP... thanks. |

Solve : Tech schooling? |
Answer» I'm currently in SCHOOL learning how to be a PC/network tech. The classes I took since Fall 2011 are: This course provides students necessary background in the technical realities and legal and theoretical principles of computer and information security to help them identify and evaluate computer security crimes and incidents. Topics include information security components and models, legal and ethical issues in information security and privacy, basics of computer networks and data communication, common computer and network SYSTEM threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities, as well as information security risk and damage analysis and assessment. Can anyone here please give me some background info on what exactly I'll be learning during the upcoming semester (the school catalogue only gives a brief overview of the course) and what my responsibilities will be now that I'm getting this material under my belt (in addition to the computer classes I took beforehand)? thanks in advance.Looks like a fun course. You will get a lot out of this course. I took a similar course in computer forensics and cyber security. In the past when I have had questions about courses, I have contacted the college itself and they usually give you the direct contact of a professor who is instructing the course. They will be able to address your questions or any concerns better than what I myself or others here may be able to assume of this course. |

Solve : Microsoft puts Java on Cloud.? |
Answer» Yes. Microsoft puts Java on Cloud. ... Rabellino announced the Azure addition at the O’Reilly Open Source Convention, being held this week in Portland, Oregon. “Customers will be able to run their Java workload in a fully supported environment,” he said.http://www.pcworld.com/article/2045106/microsoft-to-offer-java-as-a-service.html What is odd is that Oracle does not offer a SUITABLE package to fill the need for MS customers. Or is that to be expected? But of course you can get Java for your Windows Desktop. This post is about how MS has to get somebody to do a Java run time for its cloud service and platforms other than a desktop. Just sounds strange. Wait. There is more from the PCWord item. Quote ...Although Rabellino did not say why Microsoft hired an outside contractor to maintain the OpenJDK, the move is not a surprising one, given Microsoft’s rocky history with Java. The company launched its own version of the language, called J++, in 1996, the year after Java itself DEBUTED. ... Yeah, now I remember. Good old J++ Quote from: Geek-9pm on August 14, 2013, 10:49:07 PM Yes. Microsoft puts Java on Cloud. J++ was not Microsoft's own version of the language. It wasn't until they added features to Java to make it less of a crappy language that Sun started to get a bit annoyed. Answer» I just NOTICED this today, but when I opened NetBalancer I SAW that something called "Service Traffic" has been downloading upwards of 100mb of data and uploading over 25mb. This seems a LITTLE high to me, and the EXPLANATION for the process is "Contains all the traffic that does not belong to any process. Usually contains the traffic from such system services as PING, DNS data and other." I don't know what non-process would be using so much data.Over what period of time was this traffic reported? If I remember correctly, it was about 12 hours or so. |

Solve : USB security risk is going up.? |
Answer» The USB security risk is going up. All right, this is not a scandalous headline about something that happened just yesterday. But it is a trend that has been increasing this past year and may soon affect computer near you. Please bear in mind that anything that plugs into your USB port is a USB device. And capable of harming your computer experience. At the end of this rant I have some recent news stories that have appeared in the media. And besides these, there is a little column in the new issue of Computerworld that basically says the same thing. Here's what you need to remember. Application-specific integrated circuits (ASIC) are becoming very very small. Like smaller than your fingernail on your little finger. Some of these devices can now be mass-produced or just a few dollars. I mean less than three dollars in reasonable quantities. Anybody who makes any kind of USB gadget that sticks into your USB port COULD incorporate one of these in the device and take advantage of Windows auto play function to start this thing up. And don't tell me your computer doesn't do it. If you want one, I'll mail one the goes into your USB port and you won't be able to stop it from coming up and doing something you didn't expect. Unless, of course, you have a hammer and smash the thing before it finishes its job. Now here are the citations I promised. Quote USB devices are handy ways to transport information -- and trouble, according to a recent survey of more than 10,000 small businesses. Panda Security, which conducted the research, estimates a whopping 25 percent of malware today is developed to disseminate through the use of USB devices. Quote A reported ban by the U.S. Army on USB devices underscores the growing prevalence of USB-based malware. Researchers at Symantec say they have observed an increase in USB security threats going back at least a year. Some of this info also can be found on the Symantec web site. Just Google Symantec Swiss Army Knife After you get off the floor, please leave a comment.FIRST, This is hardly news at all. Although to be fair you didn't put it in the news section. Autorun, as I'm sure you are aware, was originally designed without any concept of security. You may think "well, golly gee, that's stupid" But considering in 1994 WORM drives were several thousand dollars and CD-ROM, a read-only, unchangable format, was the only type of removable disk it was aimed at, any such "security" would have been extraneous. They couldn't have possibly seen the advent of USB drives. (which I might add require special drivers in win98SE and don't autoplay anyway, making it sort of moot) Of course now you can make CD-R's that have auto-run's that can automatically pass along malware to a win98 or whatever machine since they were designed before writable CD's were even close to being affordable. Quote The USB problem isnt an autorun problem at all. Its a problem of trust. There could be any sort of specialy crafted file on that USB device that some program is going to scan, and get the idea that it should automatically parse its contents simply because of its name. Without a autorun.inf, of course, nothing happens at all. When you plug in a USB drive, if it has a valid autorun.inf, you get a dialog on XP, Vista, and 7. For example, let's say this is the autorun.inf: Code: [Select][AutoRun] OPEN=C:\windows\system32\cmd.exe ACTION=PAWNZ0R YOUR MACHINE LABEL=Pawnz0r'd drive The Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 Autoplay dialogs that result are shown below. I couldn't get windows 2000 to even recognize the USB drives and I'm too lazy to fix it... I think that OS more or less treats it like Windows 98, but I don't remember. Windows XP: Windows Vista: Actually, as a matter of fact, this was generally what would appear with Conficker infected flash drives; of course instead of being direct and saying "PAWNZ0R your machine" it was actually something like this: . An analysis of Conficker's Autorun.inf can be found here; Basically, it's not a USB security issue at all; nothing is being done automatically. Clearly, there are two options there that are the same; the first runs the conficker infector, the second really opens the drive for display. The latter does not result in an infection at all; of course if you unplug and replug it in again or plug it into another machine it will still show the same prompt and eventually unless somebody starts to inquire as to why there are two of the same item there they might run the first one and infect themselves, which of course makes the worm resident which proceeds to infect any writable drives with the same infection information, and so forth. The key here is that despite your allegations to the contrary nothing is being done automatically, except of course for the display of the autorun prompt that was created entirely to address the growing concerns over how control can be simply handed off to a program via autorun.inf without user interaction. (Also, I mgiht point out that irregardless of all this holding down shift while inserting a removable device or DVD or CD disables autorun entirely) Despite I note to the contrary above, there is no windows 7 autorun prompt. There is no special configuration here; I just checked, I have all the autoplay options enabled. Turns out that autorun.inf does not work in windows 7 anymore. From what I can tell, it does read the disk though, judging from running process monitor while plugging the device CONTAINING the aforemention "pawnz0r" autorun.inf: So, it does look at the drive, readthe autorun.inf, and then, it does nothing. I imagine that autorun-enabled programs can hook the autoplay routines in some way here (much as win95 could start CD player when you inserted an audio CD automatically, I think there was an exploit that fooled win95 into running something else using specially crafted data tracks on mixed-mode data/audio disc, but I'm not sure); important to note is that nothing is executed. cmd.exe never appears; no errors a re displayed, the autorun.inf is, for all practical purposes, ignored. It would appear that while some legacy but if code is still reading it, rather then trust the device to say how to "autoplay" it, instead Win7 goes around asking if the various installed autoplay handlers recognize the device. OF course, since autoplay and autorun are completely different, autorun has essentially been obsoleted. Before Windows executes anything specified in autorun.inf, it prompts you. It requires user interaction. it becomes a question of trust by the user and not one of an inherent security flaw in the OS. Thank you BC. On this laptop I have XP pro running. I plug the a USB device and it starts a program. Even while I am doing something. But this program is not malicious, bit it is intrusive and wants my attention. But there is no polite prompt asking if I want to run this program. It does have an auto run file. How do I turn off the auto run? Now other USB devices I have bring up a polite thing that asks what I want to do. Not this thing. It runs anyway. And I can not remove the program from the device. It is not really a USB flash drive, but it has some behaviors like a flash drive. As I mentioned earlier, these devices can have nASIC instead of pure flash memory. There is not easy way to know what it has in it. I can not format erase the ting, just remove some files in certain directories. BTW, it came from China. Quote from: Geek-9pm on December 09, 2010, 01:07:09 AM Thank you BC. Those aren't handled by either autorun or autoplay. sounds like it's managed by a piece of software that is installed. Saying you have a "USB device" is rather vague. You don't mention what kind of device it is, just that it uses a different kind of memory, it's hard to know what is on it, and you can't format or erase it. You could very well be talking about a Mac OS System 7 boot disk for all I know, excepting the bit about it being a USB device. Also, many U3 smart enabled devices are different. it uses some sort of device-level protocol or something, I don't know: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U3 Could somebody craft a device that has this "U3 Smart" technology intended to be malicious? Of course. Just as somebody could infiltrate a hard drive company and insert malicious data into the boot sector or something. Wether it's economically feasible is another, and the country of origin is largely irrelevant.Apparently it is the device you mentioned. I didn't know that Microsoft had done that. The thing I have is called a photo-frame. The display area is just 1.5 inch diagonal. It is for your key-chain. Holds 50 tiny JPG photos. Used by proud Grandparents to show pix of the new child. Does a slide show or one at a time. It cots about $10 and up retail in some places here in the USA. Here is a picture of my photo frame with my grand child. http://geek9pm.com/jpg/grad-child.jpg |

Solve : Kindle Fire - Digitizer Replacement ( not a fun repair process )? |
Answer» My daughter dropped my wifes Kindle Fire and shattered the touch screen. Wife checked on the cost to get it repaired $120 for a $200 Kindle Fire. I searched on ebay and found this replacement digitizer for $30 with free shipping and decided to take this repair on myself. ( This was not an enjoyable repair process even with a youtube video to start and stop with each step as for 1 bad move and the kindle would be junk if the LCD should get cracked for example when trying to pry the old digitizer up that is stuck on with designed intent of never to come off in the next 100 years. ) |

Solve : November Poll: What is your favorite Windows 7 feature?? |
Answer» One feature of the taskbar that has not been mentioned is that taskbar buttons can be rearranged by dragging them with the mouse. Quote from: soybean on November 28, 2010, 01:03:01 PM One feature of the taskbar that has not been mentioned is that taskbar buttons can be rearranged by dragging them with the mouse. I was QUITE PLEASED when I discovered that by accident. I've wanted that ever since win95 Quote from: BC_Programmer on November 28, 2010, 02:10:34 PM I was quite pleased when I discovered that by accident. I've wanted that ever since win95Way back when I was using Win 98SE, I installed a utility called Button Boogie from PCMag.com which allowed the user to rearrange taskbar buttons by dragging with the mouse. But, PCMag.com did not create a version of that utility that would work with later versions of Windows when Win 2K was released and then later when Win XP was released. I see they finally released Button Boogie 2 on September 21, 2007 and it works with Wndows 2000, XP, & Vista. LIKE you, I'm GLAD to see Microsoft has finally added the feature to the OS.Another feature which I believe has not been mentioned is HomeGroup networking. It's an easier way to setup a network where all the computers involved are running Windows 7. Of course, Windows 7 can be networked with earlier versions of Windows but that's basically done the same way as with those versions of Windows. For me - the feature i love is Windows Shake. |

Solve : Computer Chronicles? |

Answer» I'm sure some people might remember this television program that was on for a good... number of years. I dunno, looks to me like Excel just looks nicer, Lotus probably did all the stuff Excel did if you used it right. Did you watch the videos? Excel had it's own windowing system. it could show charts and graphs at the same time. It used Pixel-precision drawing (something that took immense horsepower under normal circumstances). 1-2-3 (the proper shortening of a product is to call it by it's name, not the company name, FYI) was a disgusting white on blue that had been abandoned years before by everybody else, Lotus 3.0 was taking years to be released and the fact that Excel pretty much exceeded all the features of 3.0 (mean, come on, even at that time having to switch from Text Mode to a graphics mode to show a chart was starting to become old), considering even that version wasn't released for another good year after that show was recorded (the version that was being demoed was in fact a pre-release version of Lotus 1-2-3) during this time Excel took over the market, and now Lotus is just a brand name that IBM puts on a few products it ACQUIRED from that company. Even full impact, which was trying to be a graphical equivalent, failed in many ways; unlike Excel, you couldn't edit directly in the "presentation view" you had to switch back to the plain text mode, make a change, and switch back. More importantly, I've used Lotus 1-2-3, and I've used that version (well, I think it was a little newer) of Excel, so I can tell you first hand that Excel is about a billion times more intuitive, since it used the emerging menu standard of Alt-letter key combinations for the menus, whereas Lotus still required the ancient slash menu. Cool stuff BC, thanks for sharing.Quote from: Quantos on December 01, 2010, 10:26:48 PM Cool stuff BC, thanks for sharing. you bet.. HEH.. Solve : PCI Express Version Issue ... Crysis 3 a friend wants to play on this old system? |
Answer» Friend of mine contacted me that his system is showing a black screen with new video CARD ( no picture ). He at first thought that he had bought a defective video card and so he sent it back as RMA DOA, and was given a second video card. Second video card arrived and same issue. Placing original GeForce 8400GS back in it runs fine. Knowing that the odds of 2 video cards new being bad is slim he contacted me to see what I had for suggestions. His prior older videocard a GeForce 8400GS worked fine in this old motherboard, but the newer more powerful video card would not show up on the computer, not even the POST display when checking connections to either of the DUAL Video DVI Out as well as no video out through the integrated VGA port when testing that with an older SVGA monitor. He also determined on his own that it may be that he needed a heavier power supply for the video card. So he bought a 750watt PSU which is more than plenty for his old computer and still had the same results. He also took this video card over to a friends house and plugged it into his friends system and the video card worked without any problems ( so this new video card is proven good ) and this systems power supply was only 500watts, but it was a Core i3 computer with modern motherboard. unless he'll settle for low resolution and low detail settings. In which case he'll have to play it for the gameplay. And let's be honest, nobody really plays crysis for the gameplay.Quote from: BC_Programmer on August 05, 2013, 12:19:09 PM In which case he'll have to play it for the gameplay. Well what I mean is, most people don't hear the story of the game and go "wow, that sounds very compelling and worth playing" they usually play it because they heard it totally taxes their system and has some of the best graphics available today. The gameplay is reasonable of course (and certainly better than anything previous trendsetters like id Software have put out. Crysis actually has a form of a story, whereas id's "tech demos" pretty much have the story "kill everything. good luck".Hah, well yeah, that's very true, most people do just play for the graphics. I haven't played Crysis 2 or 3 yet so I can't comment on those. Quote the story "kill everything. good luck". Sounds like a game of the year candidate to me!Thanks for responses to this... I think I finally convinced him to save for a new computer and get by with already existing games on his current hardware. He said he is going to save the video card for a new computer since its already proven that the video card is good and for some reason his older motherboard seems to be the issue. I told him that I'd post this here for him to get some feedback to confirm that he really needs better hardware. Sometimes in the past when it came to games and system specs I have read people running weak CPU's with good video cards and they are able to get by without any issues, but Crysis 3 even though the CPU meets the requirements is likely to lag with both cores stuck at 100% even if he did get the modern video card to work in this old system from the sounds of it. |

Solve : Could This Be The End of Computer Viruses?? |
Answer» Just wondering if anyone has read about this. ...The vSentry software gives users a disposable virtual computer for EVERY task that is undertaken on a Windows PC. This virtual computer will act as a barrier in between the computer system and the virus. The virus or malware ESSENTIALLY attacks the barrier instead of the PC and when the file is closed the virtual computer also CLOSES... First- how does this protect the PC, at all? "Damage" usually is the RESULT of a piece of malware writing files and installing services and whatnot. So the question is, how does this sandboxing know when the software should actually be allowed to write to the disk, and when it should be "sandboxed"? From what I can gather (which is to say guess, because there is very little about this particular software anywhere) I would guess that programs can read data from the disk, but writes are stored elsewhere. Of course the problem with this "revolutionary" new technology is it's not revolutionary at all, and is already done by other software such as sandboxIE. Another problem is that if all programs are "isolated", how does the user save documents from those programs, if desired or necessary? For example, Word, Excel, or what-have-you documents. Some might say "ahh, then you "whitelist" that program, so it's not sandboxed. But then what if that program supports plugin software- or macros- or anything of that sort. That means the infection vector is still there. This is only really effective when the "sandboxing" is done with browsers, and there are other software packages that do this already. I don't UNDERSTAND half of it as you know, but i don't think they will ever make a program that will stop viruses etc 100%So it's basically another Sandboxie. That's not a perfect process either. |

Solve : Is a computer keyboard a good alternative for a piano?? |
Answer» Now i am wondering if a keyboard might be used alternatively for a piano. A computer keyboard would be a very very bad substitute for a piano keyboard. It could not make the hammers hit the wires, for one thing. I would go for the computer keyboard because of its convenience. But how do you make a computer keyboard work a piano? Computer keyboard Piano It's easy enough to use a computer keyboard to play the piano, it's just rather clunky- what with bashing the keyboard into the piano keys and whatnot. Or, you could use it instead of piano keys, and smash it directly into the wires (or whatever they are called). Rather inefficient, and equally clunky. This method, however, is employed quite often nowadays; for example compositions by rap artists are often created by smacking a trombone into an elephant with no legs, whose trunk then extends, slaps a stressed out cubicle worker, who cracks and starts to smash a keyboard into an open grand piano. The cacophony of sounds, as well as the general lack of voice talent (plenty of voice though) blends together to form a disgusting mass of terrible sound waves. For some reason younger generations appreciate this sound, why, nobody can guess. Some of the following theories have been proposed: One theory is explained by clear observation of it's polar opposite; for example, many people think they are better at things then they truly are; this applies quite aptly for singing, or playing various instruments. At some point people realize that smashing pots and pans together while reading the names of various vegetables, while technically known as metal, is unlikely to be very appealing to anybody whose eardrums haven't been blown out by listening to terrible music that sounds no worse for wear when compressed to a 24kbps mp3 then at CD quality (quality of course is used in the term of "quality of REPRODUCTION" of the original. If the original sucked, a quality reproduction will as well). This phase is generally grown out of when people find what they are actually good at. Unfortunately, somehow this trend has in fact reversed; many popular artists these days have the musical skill of a CONSTIPATED, tone-deaf chimp; so the question arises: why are they popular? Certainly it cannot be their music, since it sucks more then a hoover on overdrive; no, there must be some other factor. the belief here is that somehow the trend where people think they are good at something they suck at- self-disillusionment, really- has somehow "reversed" to the point where the fans of a artist think they are good despite them having the talent of a herd of alcoholic amish gophers; It's a sad state of affairs. (and yes, I am taking the piss here more then a herd of diuretic camels). Another theory posits that despite the artist being as musically inclined as a broken tuning fork, that it's possible that people like the artist as a result of DISRUPTIONS in the fabric of space and time. These are often caused by people going back and forth through time willy-nilly, with LITTLE care for the consequences of their actions. For example, it's fully possible that in an original timeline various rap artists were actually popular because they were artists from a genre that wasn't really just a contest to see how many words rhyme with "hoe" (although their fascination with gardening came as quite a surprise to me, as well). What the theory posits is that some douchebag went back in time and changed history; for example, maybe he accidentally sat on my great aunt-martha's Apple pie as it was cooling in a window sill on a cool saturday morning, which, as a result of the butterfly effect (so named because it was discovered by Edward P. Butterfly, the first butterfly to ever get a post-doctorate) would cause all sorts of freaky unrelated changes to the timeline that don't make any sense and yet would somehow really work as part of a plot to a movie or television series. (Much like that un-aired episode of Stargate where they TRAVELLED to a parallel dimension where Teal'c was a homosexual; it was of course not aired as a result of somebody in the background of one shot mouthing the N word), other interesting factoids about that episode's "parallel universe" were that General Hammond was a small gecko with huge lips, McGyverO'Neil was a piece of cheese wearing glasses that had the special ability to manipulate psuedo-random number generators, and Daniel Jackson was a baked potato who was strictly butter-side up, much to the chagrin of the aforementioned Teal'c.). So, in any case, as the theory posits, somebody basically dicked around with time and made it so the artists were crappy; however as a result of the "Sears" effect (so named because it's discover was sponsored by Sears) there is a sort of inertia in the time-space continuum that prevents it from changing all at once (this why people would fade out in pictures inexplicably, despite the fact that modifying a timeline in any way introduced any number of unresolvable time paradoxes that movies blithely ignore). so, the fans still think the artist doesn't suck. I am wondering if a piano might be used alternatively for a grilled cheese sandwich. Roll Up PianoQuote from: iwtmmo on November 26, 2010, 04:50:37 AM Now i am wondering if a keyboard might be used alternatively for a piano. This just seems like an absurd notion to me. In the first place, the keyboard for a computer has no similarity to the key layout of a piano. So, I'm sure anyone trained to play piano would agree this is absurd. Rats... Solve : Poll: Remove the forum Thanked (Karma)?? |
Answer» Quote from: soybean on October 16, 2010, 04:07:23 PM Again, not seeing where the Thanks come from is a major shortcoming, IMO. Personally, I don't see it. Why is it important to know where thanks are coming from? What relevance does it have at all? On one vBulletin forum I was a frequent visitor too there was a mechanism whereby the bottom of a post showed all the users who thanked the poster for that post; I found that annoying, to be honest. Basically, it transforms thanks into a voting system for each post where people can either choose to vote for the post (and it's poster) or not vote at all. If you are a helper on the forum, thanks, and post count, quickly becomes largely irrelevant, regardless of wether who thanked who is displayed, and at that point it becomes additional clutter. EDIT: also, if people can see who thanked them, they will also see when they weren't thanked, and some people might take the initiative to fish for "votes"- "I noticed you didn't thank me, if I helped you, please do" type stuff. What I didn't want to do was get into a debate - and I'm sure that isn't the intent of the thread. Still, I'd like to further explain why I like the idea of a quantified measure of helpfulness if I may - without suggesting that everyone's points aren't equally valid. Quite simply, it helps the poster determine whose input has been deemed reliable and helpful in the past. The fact is that there are a lot of people on all help forums who have been long time members but who are not strong technically. Unfortunately, in some cases that does not stop them from offering technical advice - and sometimes that advice can be harmful if followed. And of course many posters looking for help are NOT technical and will take advice from whomever offers it. If they can see that a large NUMBER of prior posters have found someone's input helpful and reliable in the past, why isn't that SOMETHING that should be taken into account? I'm not suggesting that these numbers in any way mean someone is "better" than someone else, only that their input has been dependable over a PERIOD of time. Nor does it mean that the advice from someone with few "thanks" will be WRONG and the advice from someone with a lot will be right - it's merely an indicator of historical performance - but an indicator that can be taken into account when evaluating whether or not to follow posted advice. Okay, I'm done I'm new here (and to the pc and prog world) as you can tell. And I'm not going to vote for that reason. But if i may, since basically it's me and those like me that I think you're mostly referring to. At first I either didn't see the "Thanked" option or was more interested in posts>then title, to give it any attention. I looked at the # of posts to tell me how many times someones been around the block, however it can be misleading because high experience could have just joined or not be very active, then i considered their title, which I now know everyone in that post bracket has. If there were a "joined" or "since" (not sense ha ha!) date it could be more helpful to members in showing the -time vs activity- involvement in helping others with their knowledge and experiences, and of keeping the site healthy. Quote from: Allan on October 17, 2010, 09:10:16 AM it helps the poster determine whose input has been deemed reliable and helpful in the past. Because I don't consider a thank you as necessarily being reliable, helpful yes. And so far I've only seen only low thanks %-ages. Look! 9,300 posts but only 600 times helpful or reliable? Input dependable or dependable input? I don't think a thanked count should be used a an indicator. Here's why: It was only after some replies to my 1st and only post that I recognized there was a thanked. My thought was it was merely a way of thanking someone for replying to my post, which i did, even tho I may not have liked the reply or felt it did nothing to help resolve my questions or issue. I was thankfull that someone took the time to read and reply. Because after all, this is what's important, people getting involved and at least trying to help others, even if it's unsuccessful but not harmful. So why not thank anyone that replies, and Authors for that matter, for at least being here, and taking part? With the current option there's no way of saying how thankfull you are, what you're thanking for, or if you're participation actually helped the solving of the thread. Even if there was a way to only acknowledge someone if they had a direct bearing on a resolve, imo it would fall short in the results because the Author would in most cases have to come back to acknowledge the positive. Only after reading this thread did I realize the importance of the effect the + feedback may have on the unknowing. A Genius with 13,000 posts but is only thanked 500'n sumpthin times? A mastermind with 16,000 posts and thanked 140sumpthin times? I don't believe the "thanked" option is really working as intended. My feeble opinion - Posts/Joined/Title BTW! Thanks (oh yeah-->for reading this). Did I win anything? I certainly hope not! It has been 30 days and thank you everyone who has participated in this poll. As can be seen by the results the majority seem to be in favor of keeping the thanked count, however, for those who don't like it maybe we can come up with some sort of compromise that everyone would like. Quote from: soybean on October 16, 2010, 12:32:40 PM "The Thanks feature is meaningless in this forum because it does not show who left the Thanks and in what topics. I'd like to see it either discontinued or changed to show who left Thanks." There are some thanked / karma mods out there that can show who has given the thanks, allow comments on the thanks, etc.. However, the problem with this APPROACH I would imagine is that all current thanks would be lost, which I'm sure would upset some users. However, it is something we can think about. Also, I would imagine with most people who are against the thanked system that implementing a new system wouldn't change how they feel about it. I'll leave this thread sticky for a bit longer to allow any further discussions, compromises, or any other thoughts be discussed. I am also new here so I will not vote. But I ususally like to see it when I am participating in a forum. Thanks for giving us the vote.Quote from: Allan on October 17, 2010, 09:10:16 AM Quite simply, it helps the poster determine whose input has been deemed reliable and helpful in the past. Solve : Hulu Plus ... Issues? |
Answer» So my wife joined Hulu Plus on top of our already EXISTING Netflix Streaming ACCOUNT, and there are shows that she can watch on her computer with no problems. However... when adding a movie to the QUE like you can do with Netflix and then be able to turn on the Sony Blu-Ray/Web Player, Netflix works perfectly fine with selecting the Que and being able to play then the movie or tv show you want to watch with no problems. Hulu Plus however has been very disappoiting with their interface for the Sony Player in that not only does the navigation stink with their interface compared to netflix's menu's, but I cant seem to figure out why when you select a movie or show to be added to the Que on the computer, it does not show up on the Sony player like Netflix normally does. I have to agree. The queue navigation GUI is very poor. I've added several new shows on the Hulu website but they don't seem to appear on the Sony blueray player. |

Answer» I am new to computer systems and TAKING intro classes. I have a question regarding operating systems. Why not combine the kernel and the shell to make the OS just one thing? I figure there must be a reason why they are not together. Thank you for your time.Shell often means a program that makes human interaction with the kernel. It is not used doing normal running of programs that ink into the kernel. HOWEVER, scripting languages may use the shell. It is practical to have other shells. Modular programming (also called "top-down design" and "stepwise refinement") is a software design technique that emphasizes separating the functionality of a program into independent, interchangeable modules, such that each contains everything necessary to execute only one aspect of the desired functionality.[1] Conceptually, modules represent a separation of concerns, and improve maintainability by enforcing logical boundaries between components. Modules are typically incorporated into the program through interfaces.[2] AHTTP://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Modular_programming Thank you for your assistance. This helps to see the need for seperation. |
