I am a fairly experienced user, and am just now getting interested in creating my own Batch Files. Mainly to automate running DIAGNOSTIC UTILITIES. I have taught other programming languages, but although I understand the basics of programming, I have never worked or used a language enough to be good at it. All that to ask this. I WOULD LOVE to have book/site suggestions for the absolute beginner, I want to learn, but I have to start small. Most of the stuff I read gets to complexed to quick. Any suggestions would be very appreciated, thanks and SALUTE! Personally I have found SS64 pretty good.

I just virtualed installed a COPY of Netware 5. Thing is that when it finished I had like a GUI but, I had RESTARTED it an am getting a C:/ DOS like prompt. Is that what Im SUPPOSE too see or can I add like a GUI too it?

I don't know if this is the right forum but here goes.. My Computer: Microsoft Vista Home Add. 32bit SP2. 3.00 GB Ram. 233 GB hard drive.... I watch all my tv off the internet. Until recently I would go to a national channel, ie: CBS, NBC and ABC. I select a program, hit enter and that program downloads for streaming. Just recently I ENTERED the ABC network channel, selected my program, hit enter and during the usual advertisement before a program a smaller ABC logo starts blinking in the center of the ad. Below the blinking logo it says it is downloading, however, it does not go beyond this point. The logo continues to BLINK and the ad starts over again. All my other networks work fine. This will occur on either one of my computers. (I have a regular Compaq Presario computer in one room and a Mini Mac in another room. They both run off the same source). What has happened and how can I correct it. The internet does not seem to address this issue. Do I need to get permission from ABC? is it my Adoby FLASH? is it my Adoby Reader? or ? Any help will be appreciated.If it is a legal stream, maybe its getting flagged by the new 6-strike anti-piracy as a false positive and blocked by your ISP. Most ISP's rolled out a recent content sniffer as an anti-piracy measure. I havent seen it in action yet since I dont download or stream anything that is copyright illegally etc.

Please post the URL you use to get to ABC online streaming here, so we can verify that its one that ABC approved, as well as works from our computers if its a legal link which it should be. For the fact that there is advertising ( ABC should be making money from you viewing it from the advertisers), I am guessing its a good stream sourceI typed in abc.com... (it is a legal site as is any of the national networks) and their site comes up. On this site ads advertise the various shows. I click on the first one I see, Revenge, a Trident commercial starts playing (at this point all ok). Then a trailer starts playing about Revenge. Still all ok. I click on "full episodes" and then click on the episode named "sacrifice" and "abc player" starts up. Then another ad, however, at this point the round abc logo starts blinking rapidly in the center of the abc player screen. Above the logo, in small type it says "downloading". then it says " This episode is brought to you with limited commercials", then a Burger King commercial starts. All the time the logo continues to blink. The commercial ends and then the same comercial starts again. This continues and sometimes a different commercial will play and all this time the logo continues to blink. After a couple commercials the abc player stops playing and goes black and everything is quiet. This does not happen on any other network sites. I watch ALL of my tv programs this way with the exception of some Hulu and Netflix programing. Until the other day this has never been a problem. It's almost as if the abc network has to give permission to me before I'm allowed to watch. If this is the case, how do I get their permission? There is a Contact link on their page...Well I found out my problem (and probably a problem for many). I email the same question to abc that I posted here. The following is a copy from my email...

I have tried taking it out onto desktop, opening in Notepad and saving, but it wont let me put it BACK in the rar.

Thanks in advance If you can't simply overwrite the XML file by DRAGGING it in, TRY deleting the RAR'd one and dragging the new one in its place.

A friend and I built the comp about 6 years ago, 4mo ago the gfx card died and I replaced it with a Gigabyte GEFORCE GTX 650ti and then lag problems began occuring. Most noticible while playing WoW, but can also SEE whne simply browsing around on comp. Replaced internal power supply with ANTEC25 650 and still having the issue. if anyone could please help I would appreciate any input.Have you updated video drivers? Seen before where drivers that Windows associates with video cards unable to tap into the full potential of video card and so PERFORMANCE crawls and issues pop up occasionally.Specs ? ?Yes i updated the drivers.

I am thinking this video card uses shared memory even though it has plenty dedicated and if the system RAM count is only 2GB etc, then the system may be starving for memory causing problems. You can find your free memory by going into task manager and looking at what is available IDLE etc.A 650Ti is a powerful card for 6 year old hardware.
Does the PC simply lock for a few seconds or is it just a large drop in FPS output?

We all have them and very few alias' are derived from real names. So I thought that I would start up a thread where people could explain the birth of their online identity. Or perhaps interestingly do you remember why you gave yourself that name?

For example: My name came from dial-up internet, my parents were slow to embrace the broadband revolution (256kbps seemed so fast at the time), as a result I always had to go to friends houses and mooch their internet. As I began to introduce myself to more and more online communities it seemed only fitting that I give myself a name that reflected the lack of internet access. And so Accessless was born.

Not the most interesting story but maybe some of you have more entertaining stories.

I have a new Samsung PC with Windows 8 and had my Office 2007 w/outlook installes by a computer service. They also did my data transfer. My concern is that when running the diagnostic program I got some reports that concern me. I have attached the spec of my PC and the reports (2 files) Any review and input would be appreciated.

1. don't know why I ran it. probably having a little conflict and run the diagnostic was suggested

office seems to be running good. had some issues with outlook but most have been resolved
3. don't know about service pack 3. how do I check.
4. independent computer repair shop did a data transfer and I wanted to make sue outlook was install with all my previous PST data..with calendar etc. that actually did not get completed but I found a way to do it my self with a ABF program.
5. always had my PC's installed with new programs but this time I needed new hardware and wanted to save money and install my windows office with my keycodes and had it done by the repair shop.
6. the diagnostic concerned me because ut is a brand new pc with 3rd generation Intel® Core™ i5-3210M 2.5GHz plus Turbo Boost Technology 3MB L3 Cache Processor; 6GB DDR3 1600MHz MEMORY, Expandable to 8GB : •750GB 5400RPM SATA2 Hard Drive

Anyone have any suggestions for reducing fragmentation when 3 passes of the defrag of Windows XP is unable to defragment these large files? On a larger drive it wouldnt be bad, but given that this is a 40GB HD, it makes for excessive fragmentation. Was working on a friends computer and came across this issue. Do you understand what fragmentation is?
In a computer system it is normal and users should not have to do it often. The OS normally takes care of the issue.

In this context you mean hard drive file fragmentation. This is when a file is not contiguous on the Hard Drive. Real heavy fragmentary slows disk read performance. Windows 7 will normally take care of things for you. With some exceptions.

http://downloadsquad.switched.com/2009/01/26/how-windows-7-handles-disk-defragmenting/Yes I know what fragmentation is, but I am assuming that if I moved these files off of C: to say a 16GB thumb drive, and ran a defrag, that the gaping voids where these files data chunks resided would collapse and bind the REST of the data chunks more efficiently with minimal fragmentation. Then with these files reintroduced I am assuming they would be written mostly to the end of the existing data chunk in the AVAILABLE space that is allowed to be written to as available. Some data composing the file would fill say 4k voids for example in the defragmented data chunk that always will have some/little fragmentation, but I am assuming that the majority of the data composing these large files would now reside at the tail end of the data that was present before these files were written to the C: drive.

I haven't done this yet because I'd have to clean off a 16GB thumb drive to be clean to work with for data shuffle. Decided to run this idea past you all to see if it was the best method or perhaps there is a tool out there better than the defrag that comes with Windows XP OS.

I saw your link to Windows 7, which i already know that Win 7 is perfect at handling this problem on the fly while Windows XP is not, and that's what I am dealing with now. My friend has no intention on upgrading this computer to Windows 7 at this point since its just a 2.8Ghz Pentium 4 HT with 1GB DDR 400Mhz RAM and a GeForce 6200 8x AGP Video Card with 256MB RAM. WoW runs fine on this system with 20-30 fps on lowest video settings and he doesnt have any money to buy anything better, and fortunately for him he is satisfied with playing older games that were intended for this older system and modern World of Warcraft patch 5.2 runs fine on it still.

I was also thinking that if he found a 160GB IDE HDD that fragmentation also wouldnt be so severe as it is for this 40GB HD in which the files that are fragmented compose almost 25% of the drives capacity. Windows XP with drivers etc uses about 8GB and then WoW is around 20GB in size.

I would like to get rid of it, because I don't use it and it runs constantly. Thanks.If it came installed on the PHONE, the only way to REMOVE it is to first root the phone (voids the phone's WARRANTY) and then remove it like a regular app.Im not sure on how to do that. You cant hide your IP without slowing it down... Only way to hide IP is to use a proxy etc, redirect through another location which adds latency. I have an HP 1020 usb printer connected to a desktop. I have a WAP connected to a network hub which is also connected to the same desktop. I use the WAP for my LAPTOP. How do I get my laptop to recognize the HP 1020?You NEED to use printer sharing. Right-click on the printer, on your computer, then CHOOSE sharing. You can then use the "add printer" facility on the laptop. That's FAIRLY self-explanatory - but come BACK if you get stuck.

My first LAPTOP only went at an incredibly fast, 16 Mhz! with no battery life and no sound with a really small HD.

Turned the pc off as normal & when I tried to switch it BACK on the next day absolutely nothing happens. Everything is still plugged in & the fuse in the plug is ok. There is still power going to the pc, It just won't switch on. Don't know what to do next, can anyone help?
Let's confirm... When you press the power button, NOTHING happens? No fan sounds? Nothing? Do you have a surge protector? Any power outages or storms recently? If nothing of the sort has happened and NOTHING is happening when you press the button, then I'm inclined to just say that your power supply has gone dead. Don't worry though, you can buy another ONE. Just make sure it's the same wattage as the current one. How old is this computer?

FlameWe bought the pc on 14/7/04 from Carrera, who went out of business shortly after. The pc was called an Octan 64 PRO, the processor is an Athlon 64 3400+ (2.2ghz) with 1.5gb ram fitted. When we press the on/off switch it clicks as usual but absolutely nothing else happens. The pc is plugged in to a Belkin 6 socket anti surge protector. All of the other devices plugged in, ie screen,speakers,printer & scanner are working fine, (well at least they switch on). To my knowledge we had not had any storms or surges? Incidentally this is the same pc I wrote about last month to ask about the high spiking on the system idling. The pc had consistently crashed since we bought it until we replaced the 512mb ram it came with, with new ram (1.5gb) & it has not crashed since, (34 days & counting). I did try to send the hijacked log you asked for as a zipped attachment but THINK maybe I did it wrong & you didn't get it? Anyway other than the high system idle, everything has been GREAT since we replaced the ram, until 2 days age when I tried to switch it on & nothing. I am trying to connect a Dell Inspiron B120 laptop to the internet, but for some reason it is not working. Custom built computer, bought with release of Windows XP. It shut down instantly with no warning on it's own and came back on in one second, only to be in a perpetual reboot cycle. It shows the main board scree, goes to a black screen with WHITE type listing the options of what modes to restart in, then attempts to reboot, only to shut down about one second and then restart without GETTING to the desktop. please forgive me if i am not posting in the proper place, i am not experienced using forums. i did a search to find a posting i did a month or two ago. i wanted to follow up to let those who had a similar issue KNOW that i RESOLVED the problem. and let them know how i solved it. it could be that the posting was moved to a more appropriate place or it may have been removed in a clean up if that happens.

i was trying to load xp home into a 120 gig SEAGATE hard drive. i ran a seagate diagnostic test and it said the drive was BAD.

I've been living in Uk for 3 YEARS and own a dell latitude 610 laptop. i am wondering what adaptations i would need to use my laptop in canada, and if they would make it worthwhile TAKING with me INSTEAD of selling on and getting one there?? FlameDomestic mains supply voltage is the first consideration. Canada/U.S. run on 110 volts not the 230/240 in the U.K.

Most original power supplies sold with modern laptops will automatically detect and switch between 110 and 240 volts. Just read what's printed on the power supply. If it autodetects, all you need to do is change the plug (or use an ADAPTER).Thanks for your information.

LauraYou'll be fine for power then. As for telephones, no idea. The worst that you'd need to do is buy a specifc modem card or a new telephone cable. I imagine this side of things is PRETTY standard though. Do you have a contact in Canada you can ask?

If you're thinking of uninstalling Norton, you're better off just reformating.

FlameIf you are having difficulty removing Symantec Antivirus/Norton, download the program RNAV from the www.symantec.com website to completely remove it. (Or so I would think) After that, you can go delete the files yourself if they have not been completely removed.avast! Anti-virus has a feature that will let you remove files that are in use (it requires you to eventually restart your computer on your own) so those PESKY viruses and even some adware/spyware that hide out in System Restore can be removed without a PROBLEM.

Anyone about to read this post shouldn't take it too SERIOUSLY, and yet shouldn't complete dismiss it either. I've been using and hearing a term for a while now, and it's inherant nebulosity (I've been wanting to use that word for years) is driving me batty. The term is 'map'. I've used it enough myself that I've acquired a fuzzy understanding of it, but nothing concrete.

The FOLLOWING is a quote from the MS Press 70-270 Exam Prep book. Incidentially, this is the quote that finally spurred me to ask for clarification on the term. Quote: "The TCP/IP suite of protocols maps to a four layer conceptual model that includes the following layers: [...]" Okay. Great. Translation please?

I understand the phraseology "Map to a network drive" (i.e. Make a CONNECTION to a shared drive that resides on the network). But the above quote seems, to me anyway, to be stretching the term a bit. Here is what my understanding of the broad term 'map' means: To make a connection or correlation. A logical connection to the real or physical object. In other words, a Windows shortcut could be said to 'map' to the original (or source) application. Here is my attempt at a human readable translation of the above quote: "The TCP/IP suite of protocols can be understood in terms of a four layer conceptual model that includes the following layers: [...]" Better?

I suppose the term grew from the concept of a map showing you directions to a real place, so the COMPUTER Science term 'map' means something vaguely similar. BTW, Wikipedia's definition has two sentences that are almost comprehensible. The rest is for UberGeeks only. I think just griping about it in this post has ironed out some of the rough spots. You may disregard this post entirely if you wish, but any further clarification will be appreciated.

(I found a website that had one, but I am not sure if I should trust it. )

Hi recently i wanted to get an iPod so i looked around to see what types/kinds of IPODS are OFFERED. I got interested in iPod Video so randomly i went to best buy and saw the prices for a 30 GB iPOd Video $379 CAN and that's what Apple has on their website as well. I said that's a little too high for me so luckily i saw next to the brandnew $379 iPod Video there was an openbox 30 GB iPod Video for $303 with the same one year manufacture warranty and 30 days RETURN at store. I wanted to get the black one but they only had a white openbox item. So i said what the heck lets just get this it's $80 cheaper. I was very happy to get a good deal on my iPod until i got home opened up the box and to my surprise the item was a little bit smudged i.e screen had few visible scratches, the back silver plating had non removeable finger prints all over it, and there was no manual/cd inside the box. I found the original headsets which were opened and tangled and a small ipod white/creemish cover which had became duller and few black lines which seemed its been used before.
That's when i got a bad FEELING that i have spent $300 for a used product ? I could have paid $80 more bucks to be fully satisfied that a brand new product is being given to me. But anyways i need your opinion as to did i make a wise desicion in getting an openbox iPod Video for $80 cheaper or did i make a mistake here and should get a brand new one instead ? Also i would like to know if there are any cheap iPod Video deals you know of ? I would appreciate it someone can point me to the right direction.

PS. I live in CanadaiPods are basically the same price wherever you get them, out side of the open box deal you got. If it is too much damage, certainly return it if you can, but this would need to be done soon. Frequently open box items are non-returnable.Yea i will return it in a couple of days i guess. I cannot click on any links that begin with javascript, Ive tried enabling JAVA through Internet options, Ive tried lowering the security settings a little and that did not work either. Does anyone have any other ideas?zhsp109...... Do you have Sun systems ( java ) installed ?
If not get it at ...... http://www.sun.com/ over on the right side ..... It will say get java here ...... download it and install and your issue should be resolved .

javascript (the 'j' can be lowercase) is a fairly straightforward non-proprietary SCRIPTING language that is run by a browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox or Opera.

Java is a proprietary programming language made by Sun Microsystems, that runs independantly of browsers, but is often seen running within a browser by means of a special Java plugin module.

The two are different in the way they work and in what they can do. Javascript is best for simple, text-based tasks. Java can be used for complex programming, and is much better at graphical stuff than javascript.

It helps to know the difference, because immediately we can see that in your case, downloading Java will not make the slightest bit of difference to your problem. You need to look for the javascript settings (Tools-->Internet Options-->Advanced, in Internet Explorer). Also, be aware that javascript MAY be disabled in all sorts of ways by any internet security software you have running. So try temporarily disabling that to see whether it's the cause of your problem.

Finally, try loading the web sites in a different browser entirely. After all, if you value your privacy and security you should be dropping IE like a hot potato. i recently bought a wireless router and a usb adapter from belkin, got it all installed ect and it works great
the only thing is, i have two computers in my house. while one computer is using the internet the other has BARLEY any connection and takes hours for pages to load up...just wondering if any body knows what the prob is

nikolaimaybe the other comp isnt close enough to your router? so perhaps the signal is really crap... althou, my laptop is far away from my router, n when its on low signal, the pages STILL load up at a normal rate... so... erm... i guess i didnt help
