Solve : Batch files and Windows XP's stupid"DOS Simulator"? |
Answer» I need to make a batch file that will delete a file. I have tried and tried, but I cannot get it to work. I need to delete: (and I didnt have to explain why I needed it either!) We let you slide this time. Quote QuoteGOOD thing!(and I didnt have to explain why I needed it either!) Quote And the Robinson is gone. We'd better asked, the word plan lokes mysterious If you really are up to bad, del won't be that good to destroy someones computer... No, I let my friend have a certain file, and he started to tick me off, and I told him that I would take the file back. He said "Try, (myname), Try" And I did. All traces of Mrs. Robinson.mp3 are gone from his computer, as well as the program cool.bat . Dont worry, he really wanted to see me remove it from his computer, and I did. (BTW: the file had a Kazaa string in it that would have gotten it quarinteened by some SPY Sweeper program anyways, so thats a plus that its gone. Ill give it back to him someday. )LOL Remember to only put quotes around "spaced" things, not the WHOLE command. All about syntax. Basically, only put quotes around what DOS wouldn't understand otherwise. It understands "del" just fine. |

Solve : The better processor? |
Answer» Atta boy.You voud buy both and compare, but that would be HARD... You voud buy both and compare, but that would be hard... Isn't a Athlon 64 3700+ about equivilent to a 3.7GHz Pentium 4? Also, the reason for this is because AMD processors do more clocks per cycle. So they can do more processing with less raw power (raw power being what Intel uses). Frys, Dilbert? A LOCAL COMPUTER store no doubt? FlameDefine "local". It's about 40 miles, but they have the most comprehensive selection around, and the prices are usually lower than Best Buy or some similar store. I didn't know the exact EQUIV. of my AMD. Thanks for the info. I'm now EVEN more proud of my processor! |

Answer» Me and my friend Sam have been having the same problem, we both have dial-up (that's not the problem) and if we try to download something, like an e-mail attachment, it will download, but it will say it's done when it's usually only nearly halfway done. This will happen like, 90% of the time. It's not the end of the world, but I'd like to know it it can be fixed. |

Answer» Has anyone else tried out Windows Media Player 11 yet? looks pretty cool, except for those HUGE icons. i hope u can make them smaller. what if u have 100 different bands? u will have about ten pages of icons.I don't know about worst of the month, but I do have over 900 artists in my collection, and yes I have lots of pages to scroll though! Quote This has nothing to do with the player, but I feel sorry for whos ever computer that is, they are using Mcafee, LOLOH! NOW ITS ON! Really, McAfee isnt that bad. Whats you problem with it, Viper? (that's my computer) I have my FAIR amount of music on my computer. Not 900 Artists. (only 70+ Hours of music) Dilbert: You can fix the "Track 01" problem by configuring WMP to automatically find the song INFO online and update it. Have fun TRYING to figure it out. My favorite part is how it shows the album art, and when VIEWING by artist, its even better! And its not a boring list anymore. Solve : being harrassed? |
Answer» Greetings, gxman, Yes, just post a link to the one of the board's threads with you in it and post your online name and the perpetrator's. Quote Just make it clear that you are not doing this, maybe by making your final lines of each post "Mr. Jerk (or whatever) obviously has no regards for people afflicted with this ailment. Please disregard anything he/she posts and recognize it for the mean spirited crappola that it is" or something along those lines. If this person is logging in under your name, you should of course change this and pick a different password, if this has been compromised. Sometimes pointing it out is enough, but in the end there is nothing you can do by yourself, and it will just make you feel powerless and frustrated when you try. Some people are just jerks, but fortunately that can be easily spotted by everyone. The webmaster would be the only one with the power to ban a poster and/or their IP address. This was my previous message on the original thread, for the interested.the site is stsupport.com its alot of women get your boots on if ya go Id appreciate it so much Im gone from there I hope The bb has problems Rattle the webmasters cage I tried to contact them but got no where, cheers! your site is number #1 rock on! thank you winkinpennyWell, if it has become more pain than pleasure, moving on may be a good idea. Solve : Epson Scanner? |
Answer» I would like to know how to set up an email account in order to scan documents. I would like to know how to set up an email account in order to scan documents. Why wouldn't you SIMPLY scan whatever , save it and then attach it to your Email ? or have I missed something . dl65 Your right I can do it this way, but somehow you can set up email account so that it defaults to it saving you some steps and time !RPD means that he/she WANTS to use their email client to just AUTOMATICALLY send the file. RPD probably wants to MAKE it so that the "email" button on the scanner works properly. RPD: What you have to do is set up an email program like Outlook Express. You should be able to do this by contacting your email provider to get the proper information to do so. You want to find out the POP3 settings. You don't have to use Outlook Express or Outlook. There are plenty of other programs that you can use, like Thunderbird. OR maybe your Email provider has a program that you can use. Anyone correct me if I'm wrong. RDF, is this what you meant? |

Solve : Download Accelarator, r they work?? |
Answer» accelerate on the link Download accelerators can never push more information through a link that it will take. If you are downloading lots of executables, jpegs, or other things that can't be further compressed, from fast servers, you will see no speed improvement at all when using a download accelerator. In fact it might make things worse. but they are making business poor cunsumer DAP works by finding a different location of the file you are downloading. For example: I want to download ts2.exe from www.thesims2.com . www.thesims2.com is a slow server. I open DAP. DAP slowly crawls a database looking for another location of ts2.exe with the same info. DAP finds it. It takes over the download, and begins to download it from the faster location. Sometimes, its questionable if it makes it go faster or not. It might take LONGER to FIND a different location then to download the file itself. Some of the download accelerators work, and some don't. And that's that. |

Solve : avatar offer for panboy? |
Answer» panboy, what in the world are you doing with your avatar? You're taking a image that's actually 216,700 bytes and 664 x 1000 pixels and using it to display an avatar of 43 x 65 pixels. And, BTW, just earlier today when I checked, you had it set at 65 x 98 pixels. Are you changing the display dimensions, thinking that doing so will somehow make the underlying image file smaller? It won't. And, that IS exactly what you need to do. Make the underlying image file smaller. Thanks for the Effort soy , and im Glad you dident just go and start Telling the Entire Board that i made a mistake that proves that i am incapable of operating a computer , like some people...I have the strangest feeling I know who you are talking about.... Solve : response to prompt? |

Answer» I did the restart twice using the Windows98 startup disk and did not see reference to a CD-Rom drive. It ran a diagnostic test of some sort and found no problems.
Am I right so far? Okay, so ditch the floppy disk. Put it as far away from your computer as possible - it is causing you no end of trouble. :) I suggest you obtain Smart Boot Manager. This creates a floppy disk that will enable you to boot from your Windows 98 CDROM and get Windows installed. Smart BootManager's >homepage< isn't working properly at the moment, but you can still download the program from >SourceForge<. Download the file to your hard drive first, then run it (double-click) - you will need a blank floppy to transfer the boot program onto. Then pop the new floppy and your Windows CD into the respective drives of your computer. Reboot the computer, and you will then come to the Smart Boot Manager screen. Choose to boot from your CDROM drive, and away you go. Hope this helps. |

I have a favor to ask of someone that knows what they are doing when it comes to image editing. I'd like to know if someone could resize and what-not, my avitar picture, so you can tell what it is LOL. here is the url of the photo, any help would be greatly appreciated! Viper, I can see your avatar fine. You can resize it with Paint. Just paste it into Paint, then go to Image on the Paint menu and select Stretch and Skew. Enter 10 in boxes for both Horizontal and Vertical Stretch. This will reduce it to 10% of the original size and give you an appropriately sized image for your avatar. Viper, I see you have not changed your avatar file yet. What are you waiting for?I just got fed up with the tiny picture in the avatar, so now I have posted a viper in my signature, and a dancing stick man in my avatar Thanks for the help, which I still ended up using ViperWell, here, take this and save yourself, the forum, and every forum visitor who sees any of your posts some bandwidth: This image is 18,685 bytes vs. 73,103 bytes for your exisiting image, or about 1/4 the file size but looks the same. Edit: By the way, this can be done simply by using Paint. I just copied your 73,103 byte image into Paint and then saved it as a jpeg file.Did you still want something smaller? I just remembered I have Macromedia Fireworks, and I could crop it down for you... (I don't like seeing snakes) In fact, here: (this ones 6KB instead of 16, take a look) (hey, can I upload this to the photoshop PART of my site? Is it your PIC?)zylstra555, did you use Macromedia Fireworks to do that? If so, it does a very good job. Maintained good image quality for such small file size. I NOTICED you did not maintain aspect ratio (ratio of horizontal to vertical dimensions, or vice versa); so, it's a little more rectangular than the original. Quote zylstra555, did you use Macromedia Fireworks to do that? If so, it does a very good job. Maintained good image quality for such small file size. I noticed you did not maintain aspect ratio (ratio of horizontal to vertical dimensions, or vice versa); so, it's a little more rectangular than the original.I did use Fireworks. I changed the dimensions myself. I thought to myself, "If it were mine, I think I would want it more rectangle if it were in a sig instead of an avatar". It can easily be changed.I agree. A more rectangular shape looks better at the bottom of the message. But, watch out, that viper is watching your every move. Solve : Which manufacturer?? |
Answer» I'm going to be working over the summer so that I can get a new computer. I couldn't decide on which brand to buy, so I'm asking you guys. I would like to buy a tower, that is fairly upgradeable, because I don't want to buy a new tower in 2 years. make ur own. the second u buy a premade computer, u have to pay a middle-man to put it together for u. thats a bout $200 extra right there. how else does a company that makes computers make money? and also, correct me if im wrong, u cant open the computer or u will void the warrenty. thats means whenever theres a problem, u gotta ship them the computer, they gotta fix it, and they gotta ship it back. estimated wait time... 4-6 weeks.Eh ..., not necessarily. I know some folks who had a problem a Sony that was still under warranty. Sony sent a repair guy to the customer's location to fix it. This was in Columbus, Ohio. And, how often do hardware problems arise during the warranty period? Also, if you buy from a major retailer and a hardware problem developes during the first 2 to 4 weeks, you may be able to return it to the retailer for repair at their store (Best Buy has their Geek Sqaud) or for an exchange.I like what Fed said BUT I just purchased (for a family member) an Acer in a nice, quiet case with a Sempron 3100 processor, standard Gigabyte motherboard (even tweakable!), 512 RAM, onboard video but an 8X AGP slot, 160 gig SATA hard drive, DVD burner flash media slots, keyboard and mouse, 1 year warranty and XP Home for <$300. I doubt if you could build one for that price, and certainly not have it assembled. Of course that's not state of the art, but it is quick, full featured, nice looking and non-proprietary (and I didn't have to put it together for him!). Every Dell Optiplex I ever got had on site 3 year warranty, bumper to bumper but that's been 3+ years since my last one. They are somewhat proprietary, but replacement parts are readily available. Sony is a distant follower in my book, right behind Compaq. By the way IBM should be removed and replaced with Lenovo. IBM home computers are a thing of the past. I like that computer there GX1_Man! I would be fine with the not being state of the art, because if I did get one state of the art, it woudn't be in about a week anyway where did ou get the computer though, locally by you, or online? ViperTigerdirect.com, but the rebate period is over now. Stick around. There will be others!Put together your own ...and then you will have control of what you can do with it down the ROAD. dl65 Viper, Here is another budget delight. This one even has a PCIe slot and no rebate! http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?InvtId=W3107-R&cat=SYS&cpc=JAD |

Solve : was it a plane who hit PENTAGON on 9/11?? |
Answer» you know i hate to say it guys but i quite like talking about other subjects providing they are interesting. I dont think it should be solely for computers if u wanna talk about something thats interesting i say hit it! yeah man its far fetched but there is always a reason that you can sort of understand. Ross, you're STRETCHING at this. The Space Race was not so much to beat the RUSSIANS as to try to technically keep up with them and not be left behind of a possible offensive weapon a la the Star Wars program of later years. The other ideas are just....ideas. Basis in fact is often superceded by some variation of wishful thinking, magical thinking and, taken to the extreme, Mac thinking. The New World Order theory (and I use the term loosely) falls in the latter category. Quote QuoteThose are strong words there, GX1_Man... strong words. You don't have to agree with gravity to be affected by it. Facts are facts. I agree man they are crazy CONSPIRACY theories i doubt any of them are true apart form the Space race one. I have seen the evidence for that and its the only one that seem logical but killing your own people! i dont think thats logical.yeah man its far fetched but there is always a reason that you can sort of understand. Solve : F1 problem? |
Answer» Why do I have to Hit F1 to start WINDOWS after I turn on Computer. My computer is an 2200 running win XP pro. SOMEONE Please answer. Thanks Ron.F1 bypasses a problem, like a bad RAM chip or bad device. Or improperly configured BIOS setup. It says Press F1 to continue,Del to enter setupI bet you need to dissable floppy drive in BIOS if you dont have a floppy drive.Ok, tell me How to disable it, if it can't FIND it now.I'm not 100% sure I am the one to help you with getting into the BIOS setup and modifying options. Mainly because I am not in front of your computer right now. But if you are sure: On startup, press DEL once while your computer is doing a MEMORY check, and then go into the standard BIOS configuration, and find the boot sequence order. Change it from A, CD, C or CD, A, C or A, C, CD to: CD, C. This will eliminate the A drive from the boot sequence. Please make sure that you are positive that you can undo these changed in the event that something goes wrong, or this doesnt work at all. Before you do this, see if other have anymore suggestions. GX1_MAN, do you think that these directions are adequate? The computer should show onscreen when it starts the key to press to get into BIOS/setup. It sounds like Delete. On the first screen you get to for general options there will be floppy drive, hard drives, and optical drives. Just toggle to disable the floppy if you want to pursue this. Then there should be an option for boot order. Set it to CDROM first, hard drive , second and none (or floppy if you have to include it) last. If we had the motherboard or computer model or knew the exact BIOS make we could be a little more specific but these general ideas should get you there. Be sure to save and changes made and remember what they were. Are you the only one with access to this machine? No chance anyone else was monkeying with the settings? A failed device will often be named at this time. Please confirm EXACTLY the error message. Thanks, Here is a Copy of Bios Info that You Requested, I hope this Helps me Get rid of the F1 problem signing on to windows, Thanks Ron NewmanWell, it didn't get posted, so try again. This error message is happening before you ever see the Windows logo or after? |

Solve : Looking to Partition a harddrive? |
Answer» Quote QuoteWas it a CPU, or a motherboard?I had a system that seemed to kill perfectly GOOD drives. After the second conked within a few hours of installation I just sent it to meet it's maker (and I don't mean Intel)! I plan on taking the CPU out of the 999MHz Gateway computer (the one that keeps crashing) and putting it into a GOOD computer, with good hardware etc...So, let me get this fact correct first... If I run FDISK, then I will loose ALL information on both SIDES of the partititioned harddrive?Fdisk allows you to manage partitions. You can delete or create them. If you do not touch an existing partition it is safe, although strange things can happen if you delete C and leave the other(s) intact. Please restate again how the system is now and how you want it to end up and what OS you are going to use on it. Once the partitions are set, all the resulting drives - primary and LOGICAL - will have to be formatted to be usable. Hint: If you delete a partition to TRY to rearrange things that data is gone forever for all practical purposes.I have Windows 98SE. I would like to use FDISK to make a 1-3GB partition on drive C If I use FDISK on C, will it format and loose all data on C? I have used fips to partition a HDD that had 98SE on it with success. http://bmrc.berkeley.edu/people/chaffee/fips/fips.docQuote I have Windows 98SE. If you delete an existing partition all data there is deleted. Partitioning and formatting are two necessary STEPS to make usable disk space. If you still need partitioning, read this article about GParted live, it's free. http://www.linux.com/article.pl?sid=06/04/25/1917228 All you need is a Burner and software that can burn ISO images to disk. (Nero works well and is sometimes shipped with burners, and then download the ISO and burn it. I used it to partition my drive for use with the Windows Vista Beta release, did the job nicely. |

Solve : Need Pinter HELP? |
Answer» Problem with my Canon S820 printer. Just got new comp w/windows XP. When I attempt to print, the light flashes yellow 7 TIMES then green once then 7 yellow, etc. When I looked in the troubleshooting area of the manual, it said to contact the Canon Customer Service!!! HELP!!!!!! :-?Blinking lights could mean many things and each different device has it's own code so when it says to call Customer Service, it's not something usual... or it is but they don't want their Customer Service REPS getting bored and paid for nothing.... with that said, let's SEE if we can figure it out. If not, you'll have to give those customer service reps something to do, lol. |

Solve : out the range? |
Answer» When MOVING about on pages on the internet the screen goes black and a message 'attention out the range' is DISPLAYED. I have to restart the computer to continue. What'happening and how can I stop it?Sounds like there might be a problem with your monitor or graphics card. When this happens, do you have another monitor you can TRY? Do you have another graphics card you can try? Also, if you have an automatic screen reposition button, press it to see if it finds the signal and can present it on the screen. (this happens with some of those old computer screens at school)LMFAO! my dads old gateway 2000 17 inch monitor does that, but only if you try to display full screen in 800 X 600, comes up in a blue box in upper case letters "OUT OF SIGNAL RANGE" annoying as *censored*, im glad i have my computer now... the only fix i can think of, is to set your resolution to 1024 X 786... sad that i remember all of these numbers... and did anyone ever notice the fact that 1024 = one gig, one meg, or one kilobite, also 768 is what you get when you put a 512 ram stick with a 256, weird, eh?Dead Reckon its Case there all Binary numbers Dead Reckon its Case there all Binary numbers ah, confusing as everything else to do with em'Numbers are hard aren't they?Quote Numbers are hard aren't they? man, you are lucky that you dont live within 100 miles of me, if you did, you would be regreting the fact that you ever decided to mess with me...You have anger management ISSUES. The time when people actualy start visiting this forum)Quote Last Email was 5/24. No idea why he picked on me so. Maybe he thought as a 15-year old I was impressionable?A DISTURBING thought, but based on Mac's queer obsessions, I would suspect that your age and gender both were determining factors. |

Solve : Logout page? |
Answer» (this topic moved from WebDesign to Other) That script you have won't do much good. I'm pretty sure this is more what you're looing for... http://www.zymic.com/show_downloads_sub.php?id=9 ... You want to dowload that login script. See if that helpsWell, it makes a logon. I still need a logoff. I think I will try my script again, but do something different. (Making the HTML process the PHP file. Could work, but its the same thing I did before) What does PHP STAND for anyways? Update: PHP processing with that sissy script I had didnt work. I just got a bunch of errors. (see the logout page in the link that I posted earlier) Someone should probably explain to me what a logout script does. (Does it delete cookies? Does the cookie file need to be specified in the logout script? And whatever else there is to know, etc..) I am going to do another google search using more web search formatting. BTW: this is an .htaccess logon. If that helps. It is not particularly easy to force a logoff from an HTTP authenticated session but >this page< provides some useful pointers. Personally, I create my own PHP-driven authentication using a mixture of cookies, session cookies and IP-locking. I prefer this method because I can have much more control over it and can take considerable steps to protect login credentials and CIRCUMVENT session-stealing. This is a fairly big topic really, but it has been discussed a few times before in the web design section - have a trawl. The main reason for logging off I guess would be to ensure that a different user coming to the same PC cannot access private information or take unauthorised steps. In my version of authentication, this involves something at server and client ends of the connection. At the server end, I use a database to track current sessions (and do the IP-locking I mentioned). At the client end, deletion of HTTP cookies and session cookies ensures that the session is fully terminated.Confusing... I will take a look and see if I can get that figured out. ThanksApache gave me the answer: "You cant" Oh well, looks like all my users are logged in FOREVER. Are there any easy alternatives, like how this site makes a login? (or is it more complicated than I want?) A PHP program type manager would be wonderful, oh well. (from the website that Rob gave me, I could, but it seems WAY to complicated for someone like me)Just google "php login script". You'll find loads. But unless you fully understand the security implications, don't give people the impression that the login is secure. |
