I need to make a batch file that will delete a file. I have tried and tried, but I cannot get it to work. I need to delete:
"C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\My Documents\My Received Files\Mrs. Robinson.mp3"

I have tried a simple batch file:
"del C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\My Documents\My Received Files\Mrs. Robinson.mp3 /q
exit"
but it did not work. It just says that it cannot find the file specified.

Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

(this is more target practice experimenting than needed)

I know that the problem is that the file has a space in it, INSTEAD of Mrs.Robinson.mp3, its Mrs. Robinson.mp3. How do I get around this problem?

So i'm a huge fan of buying name brand products, but i realize, as i dable in computers, i don't know any good brands for the DIFFERENT parts. so i would just like some input from everyone about some experiences, good or bad, with different names of computer parts. mostly looking for

- RAM
- soundcard
- motherboard
- PSU
- Hard drive


You'll notice i didn't ask for Video card or processor, because the battle between Geforce vs. ATI, and AMD vs. pentium would get nothing accomplished, but if you have something epic that needs to be said, go for it.

So what I'm saying is you should have a idea as to what you want the board to contain ...... and board selection depends on the cpu you plan on using .

Hard ....drives ....... probably the worst drives I have run into are Maxtor ...... I would have a Western digital anytime ...... But again it depends on the specs of the drive .......... the speed of the drive , the buffer size ...etc. ........just as long as it isnt a Maxtor ...lol

If you ask enough literate computer users a pattern will emerge as to what the favourite brand names are ......and for which products........they like and dont like and why .

I am not completly sure. I havent had one thats gone Kerput without a virus/motherboard/power problem from the computer itsself.
(I have an ULTRA DMA hard drive w/ 80 GB and it works like a, umm, dream. Not bad at all)

Me and my friend Sam have been having the same problem, we both have dial-up (that's not the problem) and if we try to download something, like an e-mail attachment, it will download, but it will say it's done when it's usually only nearly halfway done. This will happen like, 90% of the time. It's not the end of the world, but I'd like to know it it can be fixed.

Hello. I hope I've posted this in the right place!

I am set up to access my work desktop from home. The CONNECTION works fine and I can access everything on my work computer from home no problem. However the response time is ridiculously slow. Opening a PDF takes ages for example and it loads in blocks from left to right. If I then want to close the PDF it takes about 30 seconds. And it's not just PDFs, even writing an email takes a while.

Our IT support suggested that it might be that the broadband speed isn't fast enough but this doesn't seem to make sense. We recently had a new server installed which seems to have made the remote access slower. Could it be a problem with the way the remote access is set up? Is there anything I can do on my computer (VIRTUALLY no IT knowedge!) or do I need to get back to our technical support?

I think it's just the Windows XP Remote Desktop Connection...It could be possible that your internet connection is not fast enough. I have DSL, and when my NEIGHBOR next door needs help, we use Remote Desktop. It's slow for me. This is becuase you're using the internet to take information from one computer to another. That's a lot of information. If the server seems to be making things slower, propose this to IT, and see what they say.

It's possible that the computer on the other side is not able to go faster than this. That server you spoke of might have a speed limit that only allows the connection to go at a certain speed.

I installed a anti viral program from download.com and didnt REALLY like it so i downloaded one form my dsl PROVIDER and it says that i need to uninstall my previous anti viral program(download.com's) so i tried but when i go into control panel-add or remove programs it doesnt let me. But Realy, if you cant uninstall form the Contorol pannel, you could try looking for the uninstaller.exe for the program you want rid off...

or woul may have to edit your registry to stop itYou may need to use MSCONFIG to make it stop loading.

But before this is done, there are some basic questions to ask:

Is the icon for this AV scanner in the task BAR? (the download.com one)

Is the AV scanner listed in the add/remove programs list, or is there still an uninstaller in the start menu?

What is the name of the AV scanner that you are trying to install? And the one that you are trying to uninstall?

If you are downloading lots of executables, jpegs, or other things that can't be further compressed, from fast servers, you will see no speed improvement at all when using a download accelerator. In fact it might make things worse.It probably make the downloading speed to the max so if your broadband are 55kbps then the accerator will probably make the download no more higher than 55kbps but instead keeping the download at 55kbps at all time.

panboy, what in the world are you doing with your avatar? You're taking a image that's actually 216,700 bytes and 664 x 1000 pixels and using it to display an avatar of 43 x 65 pixels. And, BTW, just earlier today when I checked, you had it set at 65 x 98 pixels. Are you changing the display dimensions, thinking that doing so will somehow make the underlying image file smaller? It won't. And, that IS exactly what you need to do. Make the underlying image file smaller.

Here's an optmized version of your image, at 65 x 98 pixels, that's only 2,663 bytes, or about 1/100 the size of your file:

I'm making a series of Flash animations that will all be LINKED to a Projector. I can link them just fine and they open when the button for them is pressed in the projector but, I can't get them to close and go back to the projector screen. I thought the unloadmovie command would work but it doesn't, it looks like it also unloads the projector. Anyone have anyideas how I can do what it is I want to do? If my explaination was too poor let me know and I will do my best to clarify.

even though i got no replies, I was able to find a solution after several hours of searching and trial and error as well as a nights sleep. lol.

If you were wondering, I'm just going to make each file it's own projector and use the fscommand to open them. I had tried that waay EARLIER but I just learned that I needed to put them in a folder named fscommand.

After using the shut down in TASK manager,my computer will not turn on.
I seemed to be getting power to the monitor, but power light is blinking from amber to green.
Nothing is happening in the "tower". I have a IBM Aptiva 2142 Win 98

Did you flip a switch on the back of your computer that looks like something with a "1" or a "0"

I hear the monitor make a distinctive"click " then the lights start
flashing. When I unplug the tower and plug it back in the fans run

Need help to find lost bookmarks:

Have been operating with Netscape v7.1 for quite some time now. Until about a month ago, I had a vast file of bookmarks that I use very frequently in my position as a council member in my city. On a recent occasion, when there was a power failure while my Netscape program browser, bookmarks and mail windows were open, when I restarted my computer, all that was left of my vast bookmarks was a few that I had recently added but not yet sorted into categorical folders I maintain for all my bookmarks. The heirarchy for my Bookmarks Manager file was:

(main folder) Bookmarks for airhart
(subfolder within main folder) MARILYN P. MOONEY'S BOOKMARKS
(categorical sub-folders within above subfolder) i.e., ACCOUNTS, COMPUTER RESOURCES, LOOKUP RESOURCES, CITY/COUNTY/STATE/FEDERAL GOVERNMENT SITES, SHOPPING, etc.
(individual bookmarks in alphabetical order within each categorical folder)
(subfolder) BOOKMARKS TO BE FILED
(individual unsorted bookmarks in the folder)

All that now appears as existing within the main folder "Bookmarks for airhart" which, when EXPANDED, are a few individual bookmarks I added in the last few days after losing all the others. THE STRANGE THING ABOUT ALL OF THIS IS: if I do a search for a bookmark within bookmark manager for a PARTICULAR bookmark name I remember that was one of the vast number of bookmarks my bookmark manager file contained until recently, it will bring up the particular one I searched for which leads me to believe that all of my missing ones and the categorical sub-files containing them, as well as the subfolder "MARILYN P. MOONEY'S BOOKMARKS" (which contained all the categorical sub-folders) must still exist SOMEWHERE in my system; but a Windows Explorer search only turns up older versions of it from a year ago when I imported a copy of them into Internet Explorer from Netscape (as I sometimes have to access certain sites through IE rather than Netscape). I DESPERATELY NEED TO KNOW HOW TO FIND AND ACCESS ALL OF THESE BOOKMARKS THAT ARE NOT APPEARING IN MY NETSCAPE BOOKMARKS MANAGER BUT MUST BE SOMEWHERE IN MY COMPUTER IF I CAN FIND THEM ONE AT A TIME BY DOING A SEARCH FOR A SPECIFIC BOOKMARK NAME! All of my bookmarks for paying my bills, doing my banking, and HUNDREDS of other bookmarks I use constantly to perform my job are in some "black hole" I cannot seem to find. My fluency with computer terminology and my knowledge of my PC and its Windows XP operating system and Netscape program are not of any notable level, so if you provide me any instructions for finding these "Lost" bookmarks and folders in which they were filed, please keep it basic enough that I understand same. I will be ever so grateful for any help you can give me in this regard!!!

I did the restart twice using the Windows98 startup disk and did not see reference to a CD-Rom drive. It ran a diagnostic test of some sort and found no problems.
On the screen now, the only thing showing is: A:\> It is asking me to type something and I have no clue what to add.I still RECOMMEND ATTEMPTING to boot from Windows 98 CDROM. Can we try that? Even if the BIOS can't do it, Smart BootManager can.Please tell me how to do that...step-by-step...Here is what I just now did:
At the "A:\> ", I typed "sys c" [enter]... The message "system transferred" appeared
Then A:\> appeared; I typed "cd\"[enter] and the "autoexec.bat" at the A:\>...
Then the computer ran for a good while while the message "Preparing to START your computer. This may TAKE a few minutes. Please wait... appeared on the screen.

Now here is what I am reading:

Should I type HELP? and what am I looking for? (I did this earlier and there are a few screens of stuff...)It's too late for what I was thinking of before. Lets summarise where we are now:

• you have a clean hard drive
• you have some kind of floppy disk that you can boot from, but which appears not to give you access to your CDROM drive
• you have a Windows 98 CDROM, that you could boot from, if you could persuade your computer to boot from it

I would use common sense and err on the side of caution.
If they want to find out bad enough trust me they can.

patio. 8-)It's likely that they do not, HOWEVER, some companies insert keyloggers into their employees' computers to track what they're doing. You never know. Play it safe.

The SaintI cannot answer what is on the company's server, becuase I do not know if they have inserted a keylogger into your computer, etc. I would imagine if anything, only keystrokes are being logged, as it would be harder to log an entire web CONVERSATION. Also, with Google, etc., they supposedly insert a cookie on your computer that tracks what you search on their website. I'm not sure, but I think it's only for statistical information. I can't say for sure however.

zylstra555, did you use Macromedia Fireworks to do that? If so, it does a very good job. Maintained good image quality for such small file size. I noticed you did not maintain aspect ratio (ratio of horizontal to vertical dimensions, or vice versa); so, it's a little more rectangular than the original.

Is there anyway to make your computer appear to be in another country for internet purposes. I am CURRENTLY living in Germany and trying to find English commentary to the World Cup (so I can watch the TV and listen to the radio via the computer). However, the various internet radio stations that I have found seem to block their transmissions to anyone not resident in the UK, is there anyway around this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is not quite the same watching the game and not understanding any of the commentary ... even worse having to turn the sound off ;o(

Is it possible to GET a Windows PC, a Macintosh, and a Linux PC all networked together, share a printer, and have file sharing on one main computer with Internet sharing?

Is all of this possible with so many different OS's and all?

How simple is this?

I do have a Linux tower and a Windows tower running on my network. I use my Windows(XP) tower at my internet gateway, but I use a program on my XP tower that makes it so I can see the contents of the linux tower.

BTW, I did at one point have a Mac(os 8) on the network, it worked fine. and I recomend a 100 mbps connection, so you don't have to wait very long if you have to send big files through the network.

ViperI can tell you that what you're hoping to accomplish is theoretically possible. I don't know how to do it though, good luck Yes, you can use the Linux server with Samba to share files and printers with Windows and Macintosh clients. You can also configure it as a router, effectively turning it into a hardware router for the other two PCs, provided the server has two network connections - i.e. the incoming connection from the internet, and and outgoing connection to the LAN.

Google for "Linux router howto" - you'll get get quite a few hits.

I decided to fire up SimCity on one of my comps (The 1994 version of SimCity, with the enhanced CDrom) I got an error message that said that the computer had no EMM installed. I know what EMM is, my question is, how do I install it? Where can I get it? I tried using DOSBox, but it ate most of what little resources this computer has (Win98SE, 200 MHz P2, 32 megs ram) and so the game ran EXTREMELY slow. What can I do about this?


Jon32 MEG. is barely enough to run Win98 much less any programs except VERY slowly. Are you running it in Windows? Then right click the icon and CHOOSE properties. There you can adjust memory settings for it.

Ross, you're stretching at this. The Space Race was not so much to beat the Russians as to try to technically keep up with them and not be left behind of a possible offensive weapon a la the Star Wars program of later years.

The other ideas are just....ideas. Basis in fact is often superceded by some variation of wishful thinking, magical thinking and, taken to the extreme, [highlight]Mac thinking[/highlight]. The New World Order theory (and I use the term loosely) falls in the latter category.

1) When was the last time you USED the printer and it worked? What OS were you using at the time?
2) If the answer to the first part of question 1 a time that is awhile ago, make sure there is ink and that if it has been sitting around for awhile, hasn't clogged.
3) Did you check for paper jams?
4) Are all cabled connected securly?
5) Are you using the correct driver and most current driver for Windows XP?

frist Delete you broken Windows Install.

Then use Msconfig to check the boot paths in the boot.ini

just Run->Msconfig

Click Check Boot Paths , and if you have deldted your broken windows install it will remove it for you

Or you can Edit your boot.ini fileWell, if that didn't confuse you enough, you really ought to just reinstall it CORRECTLY. Choose to format the PARTITION and all will be well. A hosed install will haunt you again in the future.

Does your motherboard support booting from USB? If so, then flash drives are bootable. You just have to load the files correctly, just like a hard drive. You can look around and see if bootable CD ISO's are available.Ok.

have you modded somthing before in a really strange way? if so post here, i like hearing these "useless" mods... ill post a good one:

so, im here at my grandmas, and i need to hook up the satelite recever through the AV jacks on the TV that is in the guest bedroom i am in, but the jacks where broke off the circut board, and laying loose inside the tv, so what did i do?

the solution was this:

1.) i got a three foot phone cable (24 gauge, double headed, black)
2.) the stock AV jacks from the TV
3.) i cut the phone cord into three pieces, stripped the black covering off about 3 inches at both ends
4.) SOLDERED one cable to the tv, then to the jack it went to the cable, and repeated till all where soldered
5.) put the back back on the TV and ran the cable out through the stock AV jack hole
6.) tested it (it works GREAT) and then taped it up with red electrical tape, to make a wiring harness and to cover the soldered points

and voila, i know have working external jacks for the TV.i forgot to mention, if you want some really crazy mods, check out

I need a logout page for my site. I am not sure of how to do this.

I would assume that you would use some sort of script. I did search GOOGLE, but found nothing.

Is there something I can do?
